Why PM Khan’s chicken and eggs solution has been mocked for all the wrong reasons
A
t a ceremony to mark the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) government’s 100 days in office, Prime Minister Imran Khan announced that his government would provide chickens to underprivileged women in order to lift them out of poverty. While a number of political stakeholders have ridiculed his statement, there is a lot of research on how and why this intervention can work. The people who are mocking the initiative are actually far removed from the context and lived experiences of rural women. To understand the magnitude of the problem of poverty — 7.7 million households are living below the cutoff score of poverty developed by the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP). The fate of a lot of lives rests upon the policies developed by the government and trivialising such programmes can be incredibly detrimental to positive change. To place the chickens within the policy context of Pakistan, I will compare the chicken intervention to one of the most successful poverty alleviation programmes in recent times, the BISP — an unconditional cash transfer programme. Any woman who falls below a multidimensional poverty line is eligible for a cash handout. This intervention has been seen as a useful tool in alleviating poverty in Pakistan. As per the Food Energy Intake poverty line, BISP reduced the poverty rate by seven percentage points. I will start by comparing the cash handout with the chickens handout to poor rural women and why chickens might work better given the household dynamics in place. Also read: Restricting non-filers from buying cars and property isn’t sound policy. It’s only good optics Firstly, one is a cash transfer while the other can be termed as an asset transfer. Money is more fungible than chickens. While money can be controlled by the men of the household and spent on non-productive or non-household activities, it is likely that chickens would remain in the hands of the women. Typically, the men tend to goats, cows and buffaloes; there is a masculine connotation attached to tending to superior forms of livestock. Because chickens are culturally seen as inferior forms of livestock, women are likely to retain control of these
assets. This is likely to increase the role of women in household decisionmaking: they control the chickens so they may decide on how to divide the eggs in the house or where to spend the resulting income. On the note of fungibility, a chicken would also limit spending decisions of the household by virtue of being less liquid. Money can be spent on various activities, both good and bad, like responding to health shocks or gambling. A chicken is a tied investment or forced saving, nudging people away from certain kinds of spending.*** As opposed to a cash handout, chickens are an investment. They require low capital and the turnover is high. They can also potentially help households climb out of poverty. However, the return on investment argument can be slightly confusing. The remarkable high returns on investment are linked to commercial poultry farming; there are economies of scale on large chicken farms. Rural households cannot tap into these massive economies of scale. So, while rural households might not be able to capture the economies of scale, the eggs would still initially support subsistence of households and provide a steady basic income once the brood of chickens multiplies. The idea of handing out chickens instead of cash is largely appealing because there is some evidence of its effectiveness in South Asia. In addition to supplementing household income and providing subsistence, research shows that increased capacity gained by women and children through village poultry projects have impacts well beyond the improved village poultry production: chickens have increased food security and improved nutrition. A possible pitfall of the chicken intervention could be the crystallisation of the role of women in the households. A conditional cash transfer programme in Mexico handed out the cash to women if certain conditions were met, one of which was that the children of the household must regularly go to nutrition monitoring clinics. The idea was to spur a householdlevel behavioural change. However, because the money was handed out to women, they were
responsible for meeting the requirements enforced by the state and thus the women had to take the children to the clinics, rather than the men. This crystallised their role as caregivers and increased their burden of work. Similarly in this case, women might be limited to the role of raising chickens and could be actively discouraged from other activities, like seeking higher education or formal employment. It may also contribute towards increasing hidden child labour. Unintended consequences are always a possibility that should be considered when designing an intervention. Ensuring an intervention that works The chicken intervention cannot be rolled out in a vacuum — there would be a need to set up supporting infrastructure as well. Ancillary facilities like veterinarian services and training support need to be setup. Additionally, serious work needs to be done to provide the women access to markets and strengthening market linkages. There also need to be steps to organise women to work collectively in order to gain from some of the economies of scale and connect to markets. Poverty alleviation interventions should be incremental and build on lessons learnt from previous interventions. The poverty scorecard developed by the BISP is a huge step in terms of understanding the dimensions of poverty. The BISP has been able to develop an extensive database of poor households. The scorecard collects information on the various characteristics of the household as well as its assets. It enables the programme to identify eligible households through the application of a proxy means test, which determines the welfare status of the household on a scale of zero to 100. This can be very useful for targeting poor households in this programme too. Additionally, the BISP has been tested and retested, its impact measured at each step. An intervention of such nature would require similar level of rigour in its design and implementation. Bill Gates and the chickens The global world is obsessed with finding a magic bullet to eliminate poverty. There is a reason why big donor organisations like the Bill and
Melinda Gates Foundation love such interventions. They demonstrate quick results and are easy to measure. The global push towards “value for money” pushes policy makers to consider such interventions. I would add a note of caution here. Poverty is deprivation on multiple fronts, not just income. Aspects of time use, productive resources, health, education, rights and availability of services are equally important. Income is used as a crude indicator for all these other aspects. Because of the multidimensional nature of poverty, it cannot be alleviated with one-time interventions. The causes of poverty are structural and run deep within societies. Rather than viewing poverty as material deprivation, we need to understand it as a product of inequality and prevalent power relations. We need to analyse the process of design and implementation critically while being realistic about the impact. The chicken intervention can and should be one of a number of poverty alleviation interventions, not a comprehensive solution. We cannot put all our eggs in one basket at the end of the day. My fear, therefore, is that the intervention is top-down instead of being bottom-up. While global research and evidence is important, we need to ask ourselves: would it work in our context? I am curious to find out whether a needs assessment has been conducted. Have the beneficiary women been consulted? Do they want chickens or are we going to force an additional burden on them? What kind of chickens work best in the local context? For any intervention, the local communities need to be consulted right from the design stage. The intervention should be context-specific and bottom-up rather than top-down. My key suggestion is to ignore the politicians sitting in the centre. They don’t need chickens like the rural woman might, but ask her before investing money first. There is a need to step away from mocking PTI’s move to push forth this intervention. The decision is based on international research rather than a complete blind jump. Let’s try giving the chickens a chance. By: Myrah Nerine Butt

‘Fake News & Deceptive power’. By: Gulshan Aalani For the first time we need to agree with U.S. President Trump for his belief of ‘Fake News’, and agree to the existence of the fake News and power of deception that starts by anger, hatred of others, political and most dangerous religious rivalry. Moreover such creates the toxic political atmosphere and toxic society. From day one the minute Media came to know the disappearance of Saudi Journalist Jamal Khashoggi, all kinds of different contradicting stories started to spread. Unbelievable accusations and allegations bombarded on Saudi Prince Mohammed Bin Salman. Turkish President blamed Saudis for killing. Saying: Saudi officials murdered Khashoggi in their Istanbul consu-
late after plotting his death for days. He may be right: “plotting his death for days”. Of course every murder is ‘premeditated’ and planned well, but Saudis aren’t so dumb not knowing the security Cameras are all around and so wouldn’t commit such heinous crime in such a public place inside their own Consulate Office. The question arises: if Turkish authority knew the killing plot in advance, then did they alert Khashoggi? Did they provide him Security escort? Why did he go alone in the Consulate office? Why his Fiance was left outside? Aren’t women allowed in public offices? It is understandable that women without male/female escort aren’t allowed to enter any private establishments for their own safety and security to save from ME2 list. “Turkish officials have been feeding graphic leaks to the news media about Mr. Khashoggi’s killing in part to try to turn American public opinion and thus Mr. Trump against Prince Mohammed”.
“At the same time, Turkish President Erdogan continued to hold in reserve his biggest gun: the release of an audio recording and other evidence Turkish officials claim to have the ‘Naked Truth’ of the assassination”, but failed to provide it.. Even before the body is founded they knew how he was killed by Saudis. The most gruesome stories of ‘Fake News’ continued by most of the people who hated Saudis jumped on the Band-Wagon accusing Saudis without any evidence. Accusing without any evidence is a sin that is known by all the GOD fearing people. Similarly, the packages contained crude pipe bombs was blamed on President Trump, which is the evil tactic of the mischief maker- criminals to make others fight with each other. Turkish media and officials reported: “the team cut off his fingers before killing and dismembering the 59 yrs old. How did they know without the body? It has to be the conspiracy and the real culprit could be those who hated Turkish President and the Sau-
dis, whose intention is to make them fight. They grabbed the perfect opportunity to trap their enemies without any legal proceeding, Saudi is branded guilty and already intention of punishment is established for cancellation of the Canadian Armoured Vehicles deal. Such retaliation without proven guilty reflects the law of Jungle. On the other hand cancellation of War Vehicles would be better that could stop the war on Yemen killing Children and defenseless people. Such war on civilians and killing any without a trial is a sin, according to the Sharia/Divine law. Thus, Justice will prevail. Allahamdullillah. important note:

Khalilzad conveyed good wishes by President Donald Trump to Khan, saying the “US leadership looked forward to working with Pakistan in furthering the shared goal of peace through a political settlement in Afghanistan”, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office. During the “courtesy call” by the US envoy, Prime Minister Khan recalled his personal commitment to the cause of re-
gional peace, the press release said. He welcomed the letter written to him by President Trump seeking Pakistan’s cooperation in ending the 17-year-old Afghan conflict, as well as Washington’s “assurance to work with Pakistan on this shared objective”. Khan also emphasised the importance of boosting regular bilateral engagement in priority areas especially trade, investment, education, health and social sector development, the statement said. Punjab govt to form new JIT for fresh Model Town probe
A five-member Supreme Court bench on Wednesday wrapped up a petition requesting a new joint investigation team (JIT) to probe the 2014 Model Town incident and ordered the Punjab government to reconstitute a probe team to investigate the case. The larger bench ─ constituted specially to debate a legal point today ─ comprising Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar, and Justices Asif Saeed Khosa, Sheikh Azmat Saeed, Faisal Arab and Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel, decided to hold a hearing to determine whether a new JIT could be formed to probe the Model Town case which is still pending judgement. Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief
Tahirul Qadri was among those who presented their arguments on the matter in court today. “My lawyers are present for legal questions,” he told the bench. “I will only present facts before the court.” “No case is political for the court,” the chief justice remarked, ordering the lawyer behind the PAT chief to sit down. Justice Khosa said that all statements would have to be recorded again.“The trial has now come back to zero,” Qadri said. He added that after the new government was elected and the larger bench constituted, the victims were more hopeful about the chances of an independent probe. The trial of the accused persons is ongoing in the anti-terrorism court, he said, adding that there is a trial on both the cases together.“What FIR was the JIT formed on the basis of?” Justice Khosa asked, to which Qadri responded that the police first formed the JIT on their own FIR. “Later it was formed on our FIR,” Qadri said. “The judicial commission gave its findings on the matter too.” The commission report, which was made public a few months ago, brought a lot of facts to light, the PAT chief said, telling the chief justice that of the 157 witnesses in the case, 23 had recorded their statements already “It is important to take an overview of the situation before the incident as well, to know why it happened,” Qadri pointed out. Letter to PM: Trump ‘acknowledges Afghan war cost both USA, Pakistan’ Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday received a letter from US President Donald Trump seeking Islamabad’s “assistance and facilitation in achieving a negotiated settlement of the Afghan war”, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement. “President Trump has also acknowledged that the war had cost both USA and Pakistan,” the statement added. “He has emphasised that Pakistan and USA should explore opportunities to work together and renew partnership.” The ministry “welcomed” the US decision for negotiations, noting that “Pakistan has always advocated a political settlement to end war in Afghanistan”.
“Pakistan reiterates its commitment to play a facilitation role in good faith,” the statement reads. “Peace and stability in Afghanistan remains a shared responsibility.” Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry also confirmed Trump’s letter to Reuters, saying: “President Trump has written a letter. He has asked for Pakistan’s cooperation to bring the Taliban into talks.”Trump’s letter was first talked about by the prime minister in a meeting with journalists earlier in the day. In the letter, the PM said, Trump has asked Pakistan to play its role in the peace talks which seek to end the 17-year war in Afghanistan. This is the first direct commu-
nication between the two leaders since Imran Khan assumed power in August. Trump has been consistent in his criticism of Pakistan since he launched his South Asia and Afghanistan strategy despite multiple attempts made by the two governments to fix the problems in their ties. Last month, a row that began with Trump’s interview to Fox News led to a series of tweets by both the US head of state and PM Khan. President Trump, while talking about the reasons for ending the over a billion dollar annual aid for Pakistan at the beginning of the year, said the country didn’t do “a damn thing for us”. launches military operation Qatar quits OPEC as Saudis against ‘Hezbollah tunnels’ walk tightrope on oil prices
Israel has launched what it calls “an operation to expose and neutralise” tunnels between Lebanon and Israel allegedly made by armed group Hezbollah. The operation was announced on Tuesday by the Israeli military on Twitter. Israeli military spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus told Reuters news agency that the operation would only take place on Israel’s side of the border and that it would not extend into Lebanon. “We see the Hezbollah activities as a flagrant and blatant violation of Israeli authority,” told Reuters. In a tweet, Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee said the Lebanese government is responsible for the build-up of the tunnels, saying they are endangering Lebanese citizens. Hezbollah has not responded to the military operation yet. In 2006, Hezbollah and Israel fought out a war in the border region in which more than 1,100 Lebanese, mostly civilians, and 159 Israelis, were killed. During that war, the armed Shia group was able to overwhelm Israel’s ground invasion of southern Lebanon and strike military and civilian targets, undermining internal Israeli support for the war and spurring regional support for Hezbollah’s military successes
against a state army. Since then, Hezbollah has become one of the main supporting actors in the war in Syria and tensions with Israel have remained high. Over the course of that war, Israel has targeted alleged Syrian and Hezbollah arms convoys on multiple occasions in an attempt to block any Iranian efforts to transfer weapons to the group. Since the start of that war, more than 200 strikes were carried out by Israel according to its military. Israel has accused Iran of supporting Hezbollah with money and arms to continue fighting in Syria and retain its power in Lebanon. Source: Al-Jazeera
An international law firm hired by the US State Department to investigate last year’s military crackdown on the Rohingya in Myanmar says it has found evidence of genocide, urging the international community to establish a criminal investigation into the atrocities and ensure justice for the victims. The Public International Law and Policy Group (PILPG) said on Monday that its findings, based on interviews with more than 1,000 Muslim Rohingya who fled to Bangladesh as a result of the crackdown in Rakhine state, also found reasonable grounds to conclude that the army committed crimes against humanity and war crimes.
“It is clear from our intense legal review that there is, in fact, a legal basis to conclude that the Rohingya were the victims of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide,” the PILPG’s Paul Williams told a press conference in Washington, DC. “As such, we believe there is sufficient basis to bring international criminal proceedings against the perpetrators of the violence and recommend that the international community pursue legal accountability for the atrocity crimes committed in Rakhine state against the Rohingya.” Myanmar, a Buddhist-majority country with significant numbers of ethnic minorities, has denied accusations of genocide, insisting that the military’s actions were part of a fight against “terrorism” and were triggered by a series of attacks on police posts and border outposts by the Arakan Rohingya Solidarity Army (ARSA) armed group. More than 700,000 Rohingya fled the Myanmar army’s crackdown, and human rights groups say thousands died. zeera. “Today, in light of the Saudi-led blockade against Doha, ensuring Qatar’s natural gas industry is independent of Saudi decision making on oil is all the more pressing.” Ellen Wald, senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Global Energy Center, told Al Jazeera that Qatar’s decision to leave the cartel could be a harbinger, as oil policy becomes more concentrated in the hands of Saudi Arabia and non-OPEC member Russia. “It could signal that smaller producers are growing disgruntled with the cartel’s dominance by Saudi Arabia and Russia,” said Wald. “If a group of small producers decide to exit the cartel it will decrease OPEC’s influence in the market.” That common cause was on viral display over the weekend at the G20 summit in Argentina. As ministers from the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and other major oil producing countries prepare to gather in Vienna for a crucial meeting later this week, the cartel is absorbing yet another hit to its waning influence. The latest blow to OPEC was delivered on Monday when Qatar announced it is quitting the bloc next month to focus on liquefied natural gas (LNG) production. Qatar is a relatively small oil producer and its decision to end its nearly six-decade-long membership in OPEC is not expected to have a major influence on energy prices. Qatar’s Energy Minister Saad Sherida alKaabi dismissed the notion that the move was driven by Doha’s ongoing feud with OPEC’s de facto leader Saudi Arabia. Riyadh has led a land, sea and air blockade against Qatar since June 2017. Nevertheless, some analysts see Doha’s break with the cartel as deeply symbolic, especially given the fact OPEC has in the past overcome major divisions to coordinate energy policy. “More than anything, we suspect that Qatar’s withdrawal from OPEC has been spurred by its ongoing dispute with Saudi Arabia and its allies,” Jason Tuvey, Capital Economics’ senior emerging markets economist, wrote in a note to clients. Amy Myers Jaffe, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, said Qatar’s decision underscores how the blockade has added urgency to Doha’s slow drift from Riyadh’s sphere of influence. “Qatar sought to reduce its exposure to Saudi oil policy and Saudi Arabia generally since the 1990s when the two countries first clashed over border disputes,” she told Al Ja-

Opposition parties demand Trudeau Trudeau: Canadians should feel proud explain his plan to end U.S. tariffs to sign the UN Compact on Migration Conservatives and New Democrats want PM to appear before committee with a tariff removal strategy. It’s a political long-shot, but opposition parties are teaming up to find out more about what Ottawa is doing to get the Trump administration to lift its tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum. Conservative and New Democrat MPs are calling for an emergency meeting of the Standing Committee on International Trade to consider a motion that would demand the prime minister appear before the committee to answer questions about Canada’s tariff strategy. In a letter to the committee’s clerk, Christine Lefrance, opposition members say they want Justin Trudeau to testify before Parliament rises for the holiday break, and to also present a plan to bring the tariffs to an immediate end. ”The Prime Minister failed to ensure tariffs were removed prior to signing the new NAFTA trade agreement and businesses across the country have already been forced to cut orders, reduce shifts and lay off workers,” the letter says. “Canadians are now facing a competitiveness crisis that the Trudeau government cannot afford to ignore any longer.” Conservative and NDP MPs are extremely unlikely to get their Christmas wish; the Liberals have the majority on the committee and would have to vote in favour of inviting the prime minister to testify. The last time a sitting prime minister appeared before a committee was in 2006.

Metro Vancouver home sales and prices down to more ‘historical’ levels, says real estate board
The Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver says buyers’ wait-and-see approach has driven prices down, Both sales and prices for Metro Vancouver homes have dropped in what the head of the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver says is a return to historical demand levels. Board president Phil Moore says home buyers have been taking a wait-and-see approach for most of 2018 and the slower activity has prompted home prices to edge downward across all property types. The board reports says just over 1,600 residential home were sold in the region in November, a 42.5 per cent drop from the same month last year and a 34.7 per cent decrease in the 10-year average. Moore says home prices have dipped four to seven per cent over the last six months depending on the property type and the board will watch conditions in the first quarter of 2019 to see if buyer demand picks up ahead

FAITH On the authority of Uqbah ibn Amir (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the messenger of Allah ( )ﷺsay: Your Lord delights at a shepherd who, on the peak of a mountain crag, gives the call to prayer and prays. Then Allah (glorified and exalted be He) say: Look at this servant of Mine, he gives the call to prayer and performs the prayers; he is in awe of Me. I have forgiven My servant [his sins] and have admitted him to Paradise. It was related by an-Nasa’i with a good chain of authorities. Hadith Qudsi # 6
10 TIPS TO MAINTAINING YOUR SALAH
I
1. KNOW ITS WORTH f one does not know the merits and necessity of salah, the immense bounties that come with it, and the unspeakable spiritual pleasure and bliss of the company of Allah that is the reward of an attentive salah, one is likely to be tired of it. Salah separates the believer from the disbeliever. The prophet, sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam , said in an authentic hadeeth, “So whoever has left it (the salah) then he has committed an act of disbelief”. On the that terrifying day of reckoning, the first thing a servant will be asked about his salah: if she/he is successful in it, the rest is easy. If not, the rest is ruined as well. 2. DELAYING THE PLEASURE IS THE WAY TO SUCCESS: Any worth-mentioning achievement in this world, whether it is excellence at work or at school, all-nighters in colleges or some other task, all require a degree of self-control and curbing of immediate desires. In fact, experts discover that in general the wisest of people even in worldly transaction is one who can curb his desires and delay the pleasure. Such a person is a successful businessman, a productive scientist and an outstanding student. What, then, about the real test of this life, the reward for which is nothing less than the Paradise of your Lord? Salah requires this attitude of patience, curbing of desires and delaying of pleasures. However, as one does it regularly, it also trains the worshipper to curb desires and delay the pleasure in all other aspects of life, thus making him or her a successful person in all aspects of life, worldly or religious. 3. FIGHT LAZINESS & PROCRASTINATION: Performing salah in time is a trial. Indeed, the Hellfire is surrounded by whims and desires, whereas Paradise is surrounded by adversity. Everyone faces this difficulty proportional to the level of his or her faith. The weaker the faith, the higher the difficulty. Accordingly, salah is hardest on the hypocrites. Be determined to fight the laziness. As you win these fights, your faith increases and performing salah becomes easier. Allah says, “Whoever comes to me the distance of a hand span, I come closer to him an arms length…” until He said, “If he comes to me walking, I come to him with a quick pace (in a manner befitting His Majesty).” 4. DO NOT WAIT FOR THE LAST MINUTE: Rather, hasten to salah in the first hour, and it will become easier on you. The Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam, warned against delaying salah and indicated that this is the sign of a hypocrite. Gradually, it becomes a habit to perform salah well and it hurts to not do it right. 5. WORSHIP IS NOURISHMENT FOR THE SOUL: Ibnul -Qayyim mentioned that Ibn Taimiyyah used to wait after the Fajr salah remembering Allah until the sun had risen. He used to say, “This is my nourishment” meaning the means of his sustenance. “Should I not consume it, then I would not have the strength to last through the day.” Similarly, it has been reported from a number of righteous salaf that they did not used to regret missing anything from the matters of this life, like they would in missing such acts of worship. Therefore, if you were to wonder how you could reach that same level of righteous-
ness your answer is: by faith and actions. Just wishing by itself is not enough and just because one is able to reach the lower level of worship does not necessitate that one will automatically be able to reach the more advanced level. Indeed, all of this is dependent on patience and hard work. Allah says, “And thus did we make them Imams (leaders) guiding with our permission when they had patience and had certain faith in our signs.” [32:24] 6. TRAIN YOURSELF TO BE ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT SALAH: Rest assured that your enthusiasm to every matter is based upon your quickness or slowness in performing it. Thus, if you were to come to it early and quickly, you would find yourself forthcoming and spirited in performing it. However, were you to come to it lethargically, you would find it burdensome and hope that you could be free from it. If you want a suitable example, then look at the one who comes to salah early. You will find him the last to leave and the opposite goes for the one who comes in late. Similarly, in yourself you will also find the same. In the salah that you came early to, look at the manner in which you offered it and your disposition after it and the manner in which you made your supplications after it. On the other hand, in the salah that you came late to, remember how you hurried up the salah and hardly did that which comes later on from supplications or supererogatory salah. This matter is not just limited to salah only; rather it is for all matters and examples. 7. LOVE IT, AND IT WILL GIVE YOU: Sow the seeds of love for salah in your heart and harvest its fruits by the will of Allah. How can that not be so when it is a link between the servant and his Lord? It is a door from the doors of Paradise and a vast river that flows past our doors cleansing us of all dirty deeds. It is expiation for sins between it and the next. Its benefits are so numerous that to mention them all would run into many volumes. 8. WHEN HESITANT, REMIND YOURSELF OF THE HEREAFTER: This is because the time of hesitation is the time that Satan tries to affect you. So, if you were unwavering then you would find the Satan humiliated and disgraced. Just as when hesitating at the time of taking out money for charity and the amount of it. If you remember the Hereafter, then Satan would not be able to distract or deter you. After you had given charity, then you would never accept it back even if you were to be given millions in return. This is because it was the Hereafter that you were aiming for then. Similarly, at the point when you are standing at the door to your house about to enter and suddenly hear the call to salah and hesitate between entering the house or answering the call, then take a minute to wait and think. If you were to enter your house, then you would not feel anything. Rather, it would be the easy thing to do. However, if you were to sacrifice an insignificant amount of your time and proceeded to the masjid, then you would feel an overwhelming sense of satisfaction, insight and understanding that would you were unwavering then you would find the Satan humiliated and disgraced.
However, if you were to sacrifice an insignificant amount of your time and proceeded to the masjid, then you would feel an overwhelming sense of satisfaction, insight and understanding that would demonstrate the ease of what you are
doing and the mistake and loss of those who are not doing similar. So, whoever repents to Allah then he it is that will remember and ponder, and whoever forgets then it was he who was unrepentant. This truly is the decisive factor. One can be punctual in offering the salah during free time and energy, such as the Dhuhr salah during holidays. However, is this also the case when work piles up and the requirements increase or at times of lethargy? Do you give salah secondary important at such times? 9. ESTABLISH IT BY ANSWERING ITS CALL: It is important to know that the command to salah has never come in the Qur’an except with the word “Iqamah” (i.e., establishment). Similarly, it is known when someone can be said to have truly established an action. To establish an action is to carry it out to the highest level of performance. Thus, whoever does not establish it, it is not surprising
that he does not truly like it, nor finds himself turning to it. This ultimately leads to his salah being deficient. One of the greatest means to establishing the salah is to have the presence of the heart, to understand meanings of the words that are recited and of the actions that are done. Ibnul-Qayyim says, “If you see a person in salah perfecting his bowings and prostrations, then he has performed the salah correctly in its outer aspects. As for the inner aspect, then Allah knows best about it.” Ibnul-Qayyim said this about the one who offers his salah correctly outwardly. So, what can we say about the one who is deficient even in his outward performance of the salah? When saying: “Alhamdulillah” in your salah, be sure to make your heart ponder about its meaning. Do the same while you say “Subhana Rabeel-atheem”, “Subhana Rabeel-A’laa”, “Ashadu al-la Ilaha Ilallah”, while bending your back, bowing to Allah and putting your forehead on the earth in prostrating to Him. If you were to loose concentration throughout the salah, then try your best even if it comes at the last minute in the fourth Rak’ah. Truly, the best of supplications is that which is done by the heart as well as the tongue. 10. SUPPLICATION IS SUREST WAY TO ALLAH’S PLEASURE: In addition, we know that Allah does not disappoint the one who calls upon Him. Knowing this, then what do you think about someone who supplicates and asks for help and aid in performing that which Allah loves and is pleased with? Allah said in a qudsi hadeeth, “O my slaves, all of you are astray except whom I have guided; so, ask me for guidance and I will guide you.” Therefore, we must make a part of our duaa for the Hereafter. Have you not seen how the close friend of Allah, Ibraheem alayhesSalam, say, “My Lord, make me and my progeny from those who establish the salah.” By Allah, how many times have we said this? Or, do we think that the matter will be established even though we have not asked the one and only to make us from those who establish it? Never will this be the case. If we were to call upon Allah, subhanahu wata’la, and He knew us to be truthful in our request, He will never deny us. So, call on Allah, and be certain of His answer. Source: aljumuah.com

Bullay Shah Academy celebrates Eid Milad un Nabi (saw)
By: Tuaha Younas Eid Milad ul Nabi is universally celebrated in the Muslim world with religious fervour and festivity. Bullay Shah Academy and Anjuman Khudam-e-Sufiya too observed the occasion with due respect and traditional fanfare on November 24. The program started shortly before Isha Prayers with the recitation of Holy Quran after which Pir Afzal Ahmed Naqshbandi led the recitation of Khatam-e-Pak and humbly offered the thawab in the court of Holy Prophet PBUH, His Children, Companions and the rest of Ummah. The occasion was marked with recitation of nasheeds in the court of Holy Prophet PBUH. Several prominent local naat khawans took part by expressing their love and paying respects to Holy Prophet PBUH.
Qari Anwar Naqshbandi, Br. Raheel, Br. Muzammil, Br. Parvaiz, Br. Shehrayar, and Br. Salis were among the more noteworthy participants. The attendants especially appreciated the young naat khawans who keeping in tradition with the children of Madinah, presented their tributes to Holy Prophet PBUH throughout the evening. Speaking on the occasion, Maulana AlHaaj Abdul Latif Naumani focused upon the historical proofs of Milad ul Nabi SAW and noted that that Mawlid has been celebrated by Holy Prophet SAW and His blessed companions. He opined that the love and dedication displayed by the participants during the celebration of Mawlid was in the best traditions of our Aslaf and was an affirmation of their love for Holy Prophet PBUH.
In his masterful and transcendent keynote speech, Qibla Pir Afzal Ahmed Naqshbandi remarked that Holy Prophet SAW was sent to the mankind as a blessing in fulfillment of the prayer made by Prophet Abraham when he re-raised the walls of Kaaba. He enunciated that we are lucky to have been born in the Ummah of the Prophet PBUH whose care for us is symbolized by the fact that he sought forgiveness for us from Allah when his noor was created, when he physically manifested in this world and even when he was veiled from this physical world by the will of Allah. In a moving and stirring conclusion, he reminded the participants that Allah and His Angels send salutations upon Holy Prophet PBUH and orders all Muslims in Quran to do so likewise. Allah, for the sake of His Prophet
PBUH, accepts the prayers of the person who sends salutations on him and makes his passing from this world easier on him, not to mention the inestimable benefits received on the Day of Judgement. The event was noteworthy for the attendance of several non Muslims who attended to express their respect for Holy Prophet SAW. 13 politics Voter turnout reaches 40 per cent in B.C. electoral reform referendum Rabi ul Awaal 29,1440H December 7, 2018
Residents have until Friday to get their ballots in to Elections BC. Voter turnout has reached 40 per cent in the province’s electoral reform referendum. Elections B.C. reported Wednesday that it had received 1,315,000 packages, which reflects approximately 40 per cent returned. This does not include packages that have been received by Canada Post but not yet transferred to Elections B.C.
In a statement Wednesday, the B.C. NDP called on B.C. Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson to respect the referendum outcome. Wilkinson had expressed concern for the process if the voter turnout was less than 40 per cent. The deadline to receive ballots was extended because of the postal strike. British Columbians have until Friday at 4:30 p.m. to get in their ballots. The mail-in referendum first asks voters
whether they would like to change to a proportional representation voting system or continue with first-past-the-post electoral system. A second question asks voters to rank three types of proportional representation systems that could be used if the voting system is changed: dual-member proportional, mixed-member proportional or rural-urban proportional. ‘The risks are too big’: B.C. First Nations leaders in Ottawa to back coastal tanker ban But Indigenous communities are not unanimous in supporting the ban . A group of B.C. coastal First Nations leaders came to Ottawa today to support passage of the Trudeau government’s tanker ban bill — pushing back against entrenched opposition from oil patch boosters who fear the ban will endanger an energy sector already on the ropes.Bill C-48 would prohibit tankers carrying crude oil from loading or unloading at ports in northern British Columbia, formalizing a similar, voluntary ban that has been in place in the region for the last 20 years. Supporters of Alberta’s oilsands fear the ban,
when combined with scarce pipeline capacity and cratering oil prices, could spell the end of one of the country’s largest export industries. During her swing through Ottawa last week, Alberta Premier Rachel Notley said the bill should be tossed “into the dustbin.” The legislation — which would ban tankers capable of carrying more than 12,500 metric tons of oil from an area that stretches from the northern tip of Vancouver Island to the Alaska border — has been both praised and pilloried by local Indigenous communities. crease of 24 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents. The latest B.C. inventory numbers from 2015 peg emissions at 63.3 million tonnes, a little less if carbon offsets are included.Nearly half of the reductions unveiled Wednesday are targeted at industry, including electrifying extraction and production of the natural gas and oil sector in northeast B.C. B.C.’s new greenhouse gas-emission target calls for a 40-per-cent reduction by 2030 over 2007 levels, a decrease of 24 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents. B.C. Premier John Horgan unveiled details Wednesday of the NDP’s long-awaited plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which includes aggressive reductions targeted at industry and transportation. The reductions estimates outlined bring the province 75 per cent of the way to meeting its 2030 target. The remaining 25 per cent of the reductions will be rolled out in the next

the same. He basically was trying to present the reality of our holy prophet . He also gave examples from the Quran and hadiths that Sayyiduna Jibrael AS came as a blessed person(human) many times , and Hazrat Israel AS came to saayiduna Musa AS as a person. So if an angelic figure can come as a human , why not the most exalted creation of Allah. He explained in great detail and simplicity that was easy to understand . At the end , maulana Imroz urged anyone that has any questions of concerns , to come and ask , it’s a farz upon every single person to seek knowledge, and he welcomes everyone to do so. Haji Bilal Raza quoted this topic in light of Sunnah in details. He concluded his speech that we should teach Islamic values to our children as well as giving other education. Molana A. Latif Naumani also participated this even. At the end Maulana Aabid Attari summarised Haji Bilal Raza Attari lecture in English. The program ended with Duaa made by Haji Bilal Raza. A delicious dinner was served by Dawat e Islami management.

Eight Surrey students receive Coast Capital Youth Get It Education Awards
By:Erin McKinley Manager, External Communications Surrey, B.C.: Eight Surrey students are among 60 high school graduates selected to receive Coast Capital’s Youth Get It Education Awards for their commitment to pursue post-secondary studies in spite of significant adversity. “Coast Capital’s Youth Get It Education Awards are aimed at supporting the postsecondary aspirations of exemplary young British Columbians who have demonstrated extraordinary resolve in overcoming tough personal challenges,” said Maureen Young, the credit union’s director of community leadership. “It’s one way we help build a richer future for youth in our communities by applauding the grit these students have shown in circumstances that would cause others to give up on their educational dreams.” Local student Ishita Bhatia of Khalsa Secondary received a $3,500 Standing Tall award. “It means a lot to me that the hard work I put in my studies in spite of many challenges has resulted in this award to help me study psychology and law at the university,” Bhatia said.
Youth Get It Education Award recipients are selected from school districts and independent schools in Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, Vancouver Island, and the Okanagan, all market areas served by Coast Capital Savings. Since 2004, Coast Capital Savings has invested more than $2.1 million to help 806 students fund their post-secondary studies. Recipients of the credit union’s education awards have included youth experiencing mental health challenges, students battling cancer, young people faced with homelessness, and those with complex family situations, including children in foster care. In addition to the Standing Tall Awards, Coast Capital Savings hands out one Beth Hutchinson award to a Surrey school district student who has maintained academic excellence in the face of considerable health challenges. Named in honour of Beth Hutchinson, a past award recipient from Surrey who lost her battle with cancer in 2013, this year the award was presented to Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary graduate Emma Thornton. Thornton, who received a $5,000 cheque, was recognized for her resilience in graduating high school even after a dual diagnosis
of Crohn’s disease and severe juvenile arthritis threatened to derail her post-secondary education hopes. “This award from Coast Capital Savings inspires me to continue to show the world that in spite of medical challenges, success is possible if you work hard and have such wonderful support from medical teams, teachers, family, and the community,” Thornton said. “Thanks to this award from Coast Capital Savings, I am one step closer to my goal of earning a degree in education and becoming a teacher.” About Coast Capital Coast Capital Savings is Canada’s largest credit union by membership. Strong aftershock follows magnitude Turkey upholds sentencing of Kurdish 7.5 quake off New Caledonia politician Demirtas
A new magnitude 6.6 quake followed a shallow and powerful tremor earlier on Wednesday that triggered a tsunami alert. A powerful aftershock hit off New Caledonia on Wednesday just hours after a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck the Pacific region,
which triggered a tsunami warning, authorities said. The US Geological Survey said the new earthquake measured 6.6, downgrading it from from an initial measurement of 7.0. Earlier on Wednesday, a shallow and powerful magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck off the east coast of New Caledonia , with the epicentre reported some 300 kilometres east of Noumea. The undersea quake was only 10km deep and about 155km east-southeast of the Loyalty Islands off New Caledonia’s east coast. Earthquakes are generally more destructive when the epicentre is near the surface. There were no immediate reports of damage from the two quakes.
Turkish prosecutor seeks arrests of Saudis over Khashoggi murder
Ahmed Asiri and Saud al-Qahtani are among those thought to be responsible for the murder of Jamal Khashoggi. Istanbul’s chief prosecutor has filed warrants for the arrest of a top aide to Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler and the deputy head of foreign intelligence on suspicion of planning the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The prosecutor’s office concluded that there is “strong suspicion” that Saud al-Qahtani and Ahmed Asiri, who were both removed from their positions following the murder, were among the planners of the murder, two Turkish officials said on Wednesday.Jamal Khashoggi, a United States resident and columnist for the Washington Post, was killed shortly after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2. “The prosecution’s move to issue arrest warrants for Asiri and
Qahtani reflects the view that the Saudi authorities won’t take formal action against those individuals,” one of the officials told Reuters news agency. The official added that Saudi Arabia could address the international concern by extraditing all suspects in the case to Turkey. According to AFP news agency, the application for the warrants was filed on Tuesday. At the time of publication, Saudi Arabia had not publicly responded to the request. Source: aljazeera.com
A Turkish appeals court has upheld the “terror propaganda” conviction of a former co-leader and presidential candidate of Turkey’s pro-Kurdish opposition party. Turkey’s state-run Anadolu news agency said on Tuesday the appeals court in Istanbul had unanimously voted to finalise a September verdict against Selahattin Demirtas. The former Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) co-chairperson was sentenced to four years and eight months in prison last September for a 2013 speech the court deemed was in support of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) Demirtas, along with several other former HDP members of parliament, has been in jail for more than two years on the charge
of having links to the PKK, which has been fighting the Turkish army for more autonomy since the 1980s. The Kurdish politician and others were arrested after their immunity as MPs was lifted in 2016. Source: aljazeera.com

Some 132 million people in 42 countries will need humanitarian assistance and protection in 2019, with Yemen topping the list of most-desperate nations, the United Nations said on Tuesday. Funding requirements next year will amount
to $21.9bn with Yemen facing the worst humanitarian emergency followed by Afghanistan, Cameroon and the Central African Republic.Presenting the Global Humanitarian Overview for 2019, Emergency Relief Coordinator Mark Lowcock said the UN and its partner organisations aim to assist some 93.6 million of the most vulnerable with food, shelter, healthcare, emergency education, protection and other basic assistance in 2019.“Most of the humanitarian crises we have seen in 2018 will continue into 2019 because there has been little progress in addressing the root causes,” Lowcock said while addressing the media in Geneva. “We need to make it a bigger priority to address the underlying causes: Conflicts, poverty, climate change, food insecurity, development programmes’ failure,” he said.

Why the world is becoming more allergic to food
By Dr Alexandra Santos Around the world, children are far more likely than ever before to develop food allergies. Recent inquiries into the deaths of two British teenagers after eating sesame and peanut highlighted the sometimes tragic consequences. In August, a six-year-old girl in Western Australia died as the result of a dairy allergy. The rise in allergies in recent decades has been particularly noticeable in the West. Food allergy now affects about 7% of children in the UK and 9% of those in Australia, for example. Across Europe, 2% of adults have food allergies. Life-threatening reactions can be prompted even by traces of the trigger foods, meaning patients and families live with fear and anxiety. The dietary restrictions which follow can become a burden to social and family lives. While we can’t say for sure why allergy rates are increasing, researchers around the world are working hard to find ways to combat this phenomenon.
What causes an allergy?
An allergy is caused by the immune system fighting substances in the environment that it should see as harmless, known as allergens. These innocent substances become targets, leading to allergic reactions. Symptoms range from skin redness, hives and swelling to - in the most severe cases - vomiting, diarrhoea, difficulty breathing and anaphylactic shock. Some of the most common foods for children to be allergic to are: Milk, Eggs, Peanuts, Tree nuts (eg walnuts, almonds, pine nuts, brazil nuts, pecans)
Sesame fish, Shellfish (eg crustaceans and molluscs) Where are food allergies most likely to occur? The frequency of food allergy has increased over the past 30 years, particularly in industrialised societies. Exactly how great the increase is depends on the food and where the patient lives. For example, there was a five-fold increase in peanut allergies in the UK between 1995 and 2016. A study of 1,300 three-year-olds for the EAT Study at King’s College London, suggested that 2.5% now have peanut allergies. Australia has the highest rate of confirmed food allergy. One study found 9% of Australian one-year-olds had an egg allergy, while 3% were allergic to peanuts. The increase in allergies is not simply the
effect of society becoming more aware of them and better at diagnosing them. It is thought that allergies and increased sensitivity to foods are probably environmental, and related to Western lifestyles. We know there are lower rates of allergies in developing countries. They are also more likely to occur in urban rather than rural areas. Factors may include pollution, dietary changes and less exposure to microbes, which change how our immune systems respond. Migrants appear to show a higher prevalence of asthma and food allergy in their adopted country compared to their country of origin, further illustrating the importance of environmental factors. Some possible explanations There is no single explanation for why the world is becoming more allergic to food, but science has some theories.

One is that improved hygiene is to blame, as children are not getting as many infections. Parasitic infections, in particular, are normally fought by the same mechanisms involved in tackling allergies. With fewer parasites to fight, the immune system turns against things that should be harmless. Another idea is that vitamin D can help our immune system develop a healthy response, making us less susceptible to allergies. Most populations around the world do not get enough vitamin D for several reasons, including spending less time in the sun. In the US, the rate of vitamin D deficiency is thought to have almost doubled in just over a decade. A newer, “dual allergen exposure” theory, suggests food allergy development is down to the balance between the timing, dose and form of exposure. For example, the development of the allergy antibodies can take place through the skin, particularly through inflamed skin in babies with eczema. But it is thought that eating trigger foods during weaning can lead to a healthy response and prevent the allergy developing, because the gut’s immune system is prepared to tolerate bacteria and foreign substances, such as food. This was the basis for King’s College London’s LEAP Study, which showed about an 80% reduction in peanut allergy in fiveyear-old children who regularly ate peanut from the year they were born. This study led to changes in US guidelines about peanut consumption in infancy. UK parents have been advised to consult their GP first. More like this The places where too many are fat and too many are thin Why the UK has such cheap food Why ‘dangerous’ drugs are still being used to treat pain Who are the children hoping to earn £24 an hour?
Human impact The recent deaths of UK teenagers suffering from food allergies highlight the human impact of this condition, and the importance of clear and accurate labelling. There is currently no cure for food allergy, and managing the condition relies on avoiding the offending foods and on an emergency treatment plan in case of exposure. But even making an initial diagnosis is challenging. The main way to identify food allergies is for a patient to gradually eat increased amounts of that food under medical supervision. However, this is distressing for children, and has the risk of causing an allergic reaction. The accompanying tests of their immune systems’ reaction can also give a false positive in non-allergic children. At King’s College London we have developed an alternative; a blood test which has proved accurate in diagnosing peanut allergy compared with existing methods. These tests now cover the foods responsible for 90% of children’s allergies, and will hopefully be available to patients in the next couple of years. Even following a successful diagnosis, avoiding trigger foods is difficult and accidental reactions are common. llergen immunotherapy - administering small amounts of the substance - has been shown to reduce the sensitivity of allergic patients and can protect against accidental exposure. A recent immunotherapy drug trial found 67% of peanut-allergic subjects could consume the equivalent of two peanut kernels after a year, compared to 4% of the control group. Nevertheless, they are still allergic. Other treatments are being investigated for food allergy, and are much needed. In the meantime, allergies will remain a source of worry and part of daily life for the children and their parents. Source:www.bbc.com

Islamic Perspective on Animal Welfare
BY: ASMA JARAD According to Census of Marine Life scientists, there are an estimated 8.7 million living species on earth, and yet the Quran teaches us that humans are the highest of creation. With this elevated status comes an elevated responsibility. This responsibility encompasses not only how we treat our own bodies, actions, and interactions with each other, but also how we treat other creations such as animals. Yes, animals have rights and a legitimate place in Islam. The Quran refers to animals as independent communities to be acknowledged and respected: “And there is no creature on [or within] the earth or bird that flies with its wings except [that they are] communities like you. We have not neglected in the Register a thing. Then unto their Lord they will be gathered” (Quran 6:38). At the same time, many animals serve numerous purposes; some of which are for our direct beneficial use, consumption, and companionship while others are part of the circle of life and benefit us indirectly. Regardless of whether we gain any benefit from the animals around us, the Islamic perspective on animal welfare includes treating all animals as independent communities sharing this earth, finding the balance between respecting their independence while at the same time enjoying their benefits and friendship as God intended, all the while avoiding any type of cruelty toward animals. Despite not having the free will or brain power that is bestowed upon humans, animals nonetheless live their lives the way God created them to obey His laws and follow the natural cycle of the earth. We are reminded in the Quran, “Do you not see that God is exalted by whomever is within the heavens and the earth and [by] the birds with wings spread [in flight]? Each [of them] has known his [means of] prayer and exalting [Him],
and God is Knowing of what they do.” (Quran 24:41). This verse shows us that animals have duties and connections with the larger world, including praising God. Hence, we must respect their independent existence without infringing on their rights and responsibilities. When Prophet Nuh (Peace Be Upon Him [PBUH]) built his ark, he was not only commanded to save the believers among his tribe, but also to preserve the existing animal species by collecting a pair of each. This shows us the importance and value of animals within our living cycle. In the Quran, it says, “[So it was], until when Our command came and the oven overflowed, We said, ‘Load upon the ship of each [creature] two mates and your family, except those about whom the word has preceded, and [include] whoever has believed.’ But none had believed with him, except a few.” (Quran 11:40). In addition, many animals provide us with food, fertilize our plants, as well as inedible, yet similarly valuable products, such as wool, fur, and leather. These benefits are mentioned in the Quran: “Do you not see that
God has made subject to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth and amply bestowed upon you His favors, [both] apparent and unapparent? But of the people is he who disputes about God without knowledge or guidance or an enlightening Book [from Him]. (Quran 31:20). An important piece of information here is that despite the overwhelming benefits we gain from animals, God has commanded us to nonetheless share the earth with all living creatures. Therefore, although we gain many benefits from animals, we must remember that we are obligated to care for them and treat them as blessings and with compassion, for the Prophet (PBUH) said, “Anyone who shows mercy, even to an animal meant for slaughtering, will be shown mercy by God on the Day of Rising.”–Al-Adab Al-Mufrad, Book 20, Hadith 10. According to the Prophet’s (PBUH) teachings, farmers and caretakers must abide by certain guidelines when dealing with animals: a: Provide appropriate food and fresh water b: Provide a safe and comfortable shelter c: Separate them from aggressive behaviors
of each other d: Allow males and females to mate during mating seasons e: Not to harvest them for food faster than their ability to breed f: Not to overburden them g: Not to neglect them, especially in sickness and advanced age These Islamic directives came to us over 700 years ago. Similarly, in more modern times, we have what is internationally known as the Five Freedoms outlining five aspects of animal welfare as developed in the United Kingdom in 1965 and formalized in 1979 by the United Kingdom Farm Animal Welfare Council. Subsequently, these Five Freedoms were adopted by internationally prominent animal welfare societies, including the World Organization for Animal Health and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The Five Freedoms are: 1:Freedom from hunger or thirst by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigor 2:Freedom from discomfort by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area 3:Freedom from pain, injury or disease by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment 4:Freedom to express normal behavior by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s own kind 5:Freedom from fear and distress by en-
suring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering
When most people in the West hear the term, “animal protection from cruelty,” they may think of domestic pets such as dogs and cats with little to no regard for livestock, birds, and wild animals. It seems that these

our effects and may throw us into a despondent mood. The best thing is to face situations, work out a strategy to get over difficulties and with will power go ahead with life. Such an approach to take on challenges is called character, which is essential for achievements in life. What is important is your perception of things and situations. It is the faith in our ability to retrieve lost ground and the action we take which are two important things that makes any achievement possible. Thinking and planning are essential but without positive action, all the time spent on planning would be wasted. In the absence of strong will, we easily get shattered by negative events that cross the paths of our endeavor. We must have absolute confidence in ourselves and that alone will bring out our inner strength. There is no point in asking ourselves, “Will it be possible for me?” Instead of doubting your capability, repeat the statement “It is possible for me”. Anything and Everything Is Within Your Reach.

Yes, we are blocked and clogged in modern instruments and appliances and facilities and things like smart phones, computers etc. These things are very helpful, very convenient and necessary but instead of riding them when we let them ride us, problem starts. When instead of becoming driver of these vehicles, we let them drive us, problem starts. We all are the victims of this mistake. Dark Age to Light Age and Lightening When electricity was found, it was so convenient for everyone. Switching it on and off was easy instead of manual work of collecting wood and lighting it and fire coming. Phone was invented and we could now talk long distance, even move around and talk. And now no one needs calling cards for long distance. We can make video calls and see our family, friends in another country thousands of km’s away. Even marriage, business meetings can be conducted too. What is the Problem then? The problem is after we are done using the technology we are busy on what different things are posted around the world. When we are educating, then it is fine but when we just waste time, then we are wasting the gift God has given us: free time. Everyone has goals or work going on in their life. Students have to study, other adults must work so that is understandable if their work
revolves using technology. But when we open 10 different tabs consisting of Facebook, YouTube etc then we are not being true to what we must be doing. When one leaves all work and goes on wasitng time in reading things not applicable or waste of time for hours and hours then this is not good. Even while I write this, I confess to spending time playing games on the phone. Excess is bad These things in of itself are not bad, rather very useful if we use them with moderation. Phones are good for communication but when we are driving, then it is harmful. We should learn to say and accept “No” that we are driving and will touch base later on. Television and internet are cables to the other parts of the world but when we watch to waste time and spend hours then it is harmful. Focus All these things are there to make us more focused, more attentive towards our goal and not to distract us. Info: Asma Shums <asmashums@gmail.com

So don’t expect him to tolerate all your follies. Work hard, lift weight, do your tasks alone, gain knowledge about more and more fields, walk alone with confidence and push your limits. Don’t beg for the equality, establish it. It’s not always the man’s duty to leave his seat for a senior citizen. If you can tolerate menstruation and pregnancy then traveling uncomfortably becomes a small thing. Don’t create hell for other women around you.
Love your mother-in-law and treat your daughters-in-law like your own daughters. Don’t label a woman with simple clothes as ‘behenji’.Western clothes don’t make you superior. If wearing shorts is a choice then wearing a Burqa/Saree/Hijab/Salwar suit can also be a choice. Stop judging others by their appearance. You are strong enough to hold your bags and walk in the sun. since most of the time we see them not as living, breathing creatures, but as butchered pieces, packaged for sale, or hung up as hunting trophies. In Islam, we are taught that all animals—livestock, birds, pets, and wild—must be treated kindly and respectfully. Even the animals we slaughter have rights. It was narrated by Shaddad bin Aws that the Prophet (PBUH) said: “Indeed Allah has decreed Ihsan [responsibility to obtain excellence in worship] in everything. So when you kill, then do the killing well, and when you slaughter, then do the slaughtering well. Let one of you sharpen his blade, and let him comfort his animal (before slaughtering)”–Jami at-Tirmidhi, Vol. 3, Book 14, Hadith 1409. The provisions of respect and anti-cruelty also extend to animals that we do not consume. In some ways, hunting wild animals can be seen as a form of corruption since these animals are not hunted for sustenance, but for amusement and arrogance. It was narrated from Abdullah bin ‘Amr,
who attributed it to the Messenger of God (PBUH), who said, “There is no person who kills a small bird or anything larger, for no just reason, but God will ask him about it.” The companions then asked, “O Messenger of God, what does ‘just reason’ mean?” He replied, “That you slaughter it and eat it, and do not cut off its head and throw it aside.”–Sunan An-Nasa’i, Chapter 42, Hadith 4450. Indeed, killing an animal for no beneficial reason, or treating them with cruelty is a sin and a violation of their rights. Even birds that are killed unjustly will come beseeching God for justice on the Day of Judgement. It was narrated that Amr bin Sharid heard the Messenger of God (PBUH) say, “Whoever kills a small bird for no reason, it will beseech God on the Day of Resurrection saying: O Lord, so and so killed me for no reason, and he did not kill me for any beneficial purpose.”–Sunan AnNasa’i, Chapter 42, Hadith 4451. In another instance, it was narrated that Abdullah bin Ja’far said, “The Messenger of God (PBUH) passed by some people
By: Shabnam Khan -Family Counsellor There is nothing that is difficult or easy but it is only our perception that makes it look so. Any work seen as a whole, may be threatening but when divided into parts, becomes simple and easy. Instead of being dazed by the magnitude of the task, start working and even if you do a little everyday, within a short period of time you will be surprised by your achievements. The problem with many of us is that even at an initial stage we are baffled by the enormity of the task and give it up as an easy way escape. If we are sincere in undertaking a job, we would analyse ways and means of doing it. Lack of sincerity and erroneous perception often frightens us from undertaking any task. When we have strong willpower, the goal alone will remain constant in our memory and every challenge that comes our way, will convert into an opportunity for achieving our objective. As we are conditioned by external influences, both environmental and individual, sometimes some unfavorable events happen on which we have no control. who were shooting arrows at a ram. He denounced that and said: ‘Do not disfigure animals (by using them as targets).’” –Sunan An-Nasa’i, Chapter 42, Hadith 4445. Indeed, cruelty against animals for the purpose of sports and entertainment is forbidden. Islam teaches us to be careful and respectful to our animals. There is a great reward for treating them kindly and great punishment for violating their rights. For example, it was narrated from Abu Huraira, that the Prophet (PBUH) said, “A prostitute was forgiven by God, because, passing by a panting dog near a well and seeing that the dog was about to die of thirst, she took off her shoe, and tying it with her head-cover she drew out some water for it. So, God forgave her because of that.” –Sahih al-Bukhari, Vol. 4, Book 54, Hadith 127. Despite her lifestyle, her mercy toward the dog elevated her in the eyes of God, as He rewarded her with forgiveness from her sins. All living creatures are created to survive and communicate under certain guidelines and ethics; this most prominently includes the wide array of animals who function seamlessly in a circle of life. boom of human civilization, animals and other living habitats did not have to suffer from overfishing, hunting, destruction of habitats, human agriculture, urbanization, and the use of toxins such as pesticides and herbicides. Animal extinction is an unfortunate side effect of our own sprawling existence. Despite all of this, many animals learn to adapt and even thrive. By God’s grace and wisdom, He continues to show us our elevated status among living things by having other species adapt to our continuously evolving lifestyles. Therefore, it is our responsibility to return not with arrogance and a sense of superiority, but with compassion and deference to our fellow creatures. In the end, animal welfare is not only a valid topic of discussion, but a serious issue we must address and ponder within our lifestyles. Just as we are created on this earth to serve a purpose, so have animals, plants, and all other known and unknown living species. We must take our place in this circle of life and try to leave it behind a little better than what we inherit.

21 local Association of Islamic Charitable Projects Milad-un-Nabiyy Celebration at Bell Performing Arts Center. Rabi ul Awaal 29,1440H December 7, 2018
All praise is due to Allah and may Allah raise the rank of Prophet Muhammad, his virtuous and blessed kin and honored companions. The month of Rabi^-ulAwwal is the month of Miladun-Nabiyy, the month in which the whole world is decorated with happiness, with praising the Prophet and with gratitude to Allah ta^ala for the ‘Gifted Mercy’, for the ‘Mercy to the creation’, for the appearance of Prophet Muhammad - sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam. Rabi^ul I is the month of celebrations in commemoration of the birth (Al-Mawlid) of Prophet Muhammad, by way of reciting the Qur’an and by way of remembering the honorable traits and characteristics of the Prophet, by way of sharing food with people which is a blessed matter of immense goodness. Following the practice of the pious Muslims, scholars and the mainstream of the ummah all over the world and through the centuries, the Association of Islamic Charitable Projects (AICP) in BC observed and celebrated The Mawlid (Milad-un-Nabiyy) with the rest of the Muslim community expressing joy and gratitude for the birth of the best of creation, at Bell Performing Arts Center Surrey,on Nov 25. It was an important occasion for the Imams of the AICP to address the attendees in their bilingual speeches and urge them to adhere to the fundamentals of this tolerant Religion commanded by Allah; while passionately warning against exploitation, misguidance and extremist ideologies in the name of religion. It was an occasion to remind the Muslims of the greatness of our beloved Prophet and what
he stood for. He taught us the proper belief in Allah the Creator Who does not resemble His creation in any way “There is nothing like Him”[interpretation of verse 11 – Surat ash-Shura.], the proper belief in Prophets, proper application of the rules of Islam far from any exaggeration, extremism, fanaticism, or personal opinions. It was also an occasion to thank the messenger of Allah, who taught us, guided us and led us, with his words as with his actions to what is best for us and our common good; to thank the Messenger of Allah, for teaching us the meanings of brotherhood and all that calls for harmony and unity; to thank the Messenger of Allah for he was the one who supported and strengthened the ‘woman’, regarded her with respect and guarded her with chastity for what he left us of his blessings and benefits. Thank you, O Messenger of Allah, you who taught us that you are but a blessing while alive and after your death. And you are the one who said: “My life is a great good for you, and my death is a great good for you.” Praise be to Allah ta^ala for making us among the followers of this Great Prophet. Together in loving Muhammad, Muslims from various communities came to celebrate this honorable occasion as they would in their homeland.A moving Qur’an recitation started the celebration which was full of joyful, blissful and delightful chants and beautiful tunes for the love of the Prophet sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam from AICP chants group. The students of Al-Hidayah school and The Islamic Education School (TIES) as usual shone with their marsh
onto the stage, beaming with heads high, proud and ecstatic praising their Prophet ‘the Guide to mankind.’ The Association of Islamic Charitable Projects held this celebration under the banner of ‘Muhammad, a status greater than a lifetime of guidance’. Attendees enjoyed complimentary food and sweets catered by the Association for the love of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. At the end of this huge great even, the attendance was able to seek tabarruk and the blessings of seeing the hair of the Greatest Prophet sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam.

lims, especially younger Muslims. He’s tried to foster that embrace by communicating science in a religious context, giving public lectures in Pakistan and making videos about astronomy in Urdu. Today, most majority-Muslim countries teach Darwin’s theory of evolution in high schools with little question, and universities study the field of genetics that stems from it. There is a strain of Muslim creationism that rejects human evolution, he said, though it doesn’t embrace the belief that the Earth is only a few thousand years old.So Islam “is a really friendly religion to science,” he said. But there’s a flip side to that friendliness: There’s a trend of looking to the Quran as a science book, “and if you interpret it in certain ways, then you can find, for example, a mention of relativity or quantum physics or other types of things.” It’s comparable to best-selling books in the 1990’s that argued that hidden messages about current events could be found in the Bible, he said. “That is another place where young, aspiring minds can be diverted into that kind of an endeavor, which actually doesn’t lead to any scientific development,” Hameed said. A bigger concern, especially for Muslim scientists working in the United States, Europe, and other Western countries, is that Islamo
phobia and the anti-religious truculence of some scientists can drive a wedge between researchers in the lab. “There are a lot of scientists who are religious and have no problem with religion, or they are not religious and have no problem with religion,” Hameed said. “But active hostility can turn off some students, in particular if they think that pursuing science would mean a choice between their religion or science.” For many of those students, their faith “is not just a doctrine — it’s their life. It’s the society that’s formed around that, the culture that is formed around that, your family that is formed around that.” And what’s often lost in those discussions is the diversity of the adherents of a religion that includes more than 1.5 billion people across the globe.“People oftentimes when they are talking about Saudi Arabia, that’s the stand-in for Muslims. They don’t think about, for example, Dave Chappelle or Mahershala Ali, who recently won an Oscar, or Muhammad Ali,” Hameed said. “Where are Muslims? They’re everywhere, in fact, and they’re shaped as much by their culture and their society, and religion is only one of their identities.” ( Source: American Association for the Advancement of Science )

Only PM can rein in ‘disastrous’ population growth, says CJP at symposium
Pakistan, and regretted that the “menace” was not given any attention in the past 60 years. He made the remarks while addressing a symposium in the capital on the alarming population growth in Pakistan. “Our water reserves and resources are depleting, but our mouths [to feed] are increasing,” he said while addressing the event that was attended by several high-profile personalities, including judges and Prime Minister Imran Khan. CJP Nisar called on the prime minister to probe why no dam had been built Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar in Pakistan in the past 40 years and why on Wednesday termed unbridled population the country was facing such an “alarming” growth as the “most disastrous issue” for situation.“Today we have no water manage-
ment in Pakistan. Water is life, without water we cannot conceive a life,” he said. The top judge said that the apex court had created a task force which presented its recommendations after holding a few sessions but added that “that was the extent of their power”. ”The judiciary does not have any mechanism to act on these recommendations,” he said. “The only person who can get any implementation done is the prime minister,” he said. He said the Supreme Court has played its part in amplifying and understanding human rights and now it was the Executive’s job to take them forward. Justice Nisar said the burden on the judicial
system did not go back to just the past five to seven years but it was centuries old. “The tools have to be given to us by the parliament,” he said, regretting that so much time had passed but laws had not been updated.“Perhaps the time has come to stop boycotting the parliament and sit in the parliament and [start doing] our actual duty,” he said. CJP Nisar said models used by other countries to restrain their population growth were before the country and that they just needed to be implemented and awareness needed to be created. “I am hopeful that with good intentions, we will reach our dream in a few years,” the top judge said.
The demographics are the key to promoting economic development and security in Pakistan. It also prioritises family planning — particularly in an effort to promote birth spacing — as the best strategy for achieving ambitious population targets (2.1 births per woman in 2025). In many ways, the story of Pakistan is one of a failure of family planning. Although the Family Planning Association of Pakistan was set up as early as 1952, we have seen a five-fold increase in our population between 1951 and 2009, from 34 million to 171 million. Pakistan will have to reduce its current population growth rate to half in the next 30 years to achieve the status of a high middle-income country, as the current pace of increase in population is a barrier to becoming a prosperous nation. Pakistan’s latest estimated population is 207,774,520 (excluding the regions of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and GilgitBaltistan). This makes Pakistan the world’s fifth-most-populous country, just behind Indonesia and slightly ahead of Brazil. Including Azad Kashmir, the population would be 211.819 million. Gilgit Baltistan region has an additional estimated population of 1.8 million. During 1950–2011, Pakistan’s urban population expanded over sevenfold, while the total population increased by over fourfold. In the past, the country’s population had a relatively high growth rate that has been changed by moderate birth rates. Between 1998-2017, the average population growth rate stood at 2.40%.Dramatic social changes have led to rapid urbanization and the emergence of megacities. During
1990–2003, Pakistan sustained its historical lead as the second-most urbanized nation in South Asia with city dwellers making up 36% of its population. Furthermore, 50% of Pakistanis now reside in towns of 5,000 people or more. Pakistan has a multicultural and multi-ethnic society and hosts one of the largest refugee populations in the world as well as a young population. Population growth in Pakistan has continued to increase. Many factors are cited that contribute to the increasing rate: 1) absence of a coherent approach to overcome the social and cultural constraints to the use of family planning; 2) ineffective information, education and communication campaign; 3) frequent changes in the organizational set up of the program; 4) inefficient management; and 5) lack of political commitment to family planning. However, rising trend in contraceptive use to nearly 18% in 1994-95 and to about 24% in 1996-97 indicated positive response of Pakistani partners to the adoption of family planning. Still, the impact of the program is low since only one-fifth of women in Pakistan use contraceptives. In view of all these, the government set strategies that focus more on quality of service and accessibility of family planning centers. There is a need to improve the population planning efforts and reduce the fertility rate in order to cut down population pressures on the country’s physical and capital resources. On Wednesday December 5, Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar termed unbridled population growth as the “most disastrous issue” for Pakistan, and regretted that
the “menace” was not given any attention in the past 60 years. He made the remarks while addressing a symposium in the capital on the alarming population growth in Pakistan. Addressing CJP Nisar, the premier said that the steps that the top judge had taken should have been taken by democratic governments instead.”The democratic governments unfortunately only used to think about five years,” he said, adding that nothing could be accomplished in that time span for major issues.”We are in these problems because of a short-term thinking,” Prime Minister Khan regretted. The premier recalled the family planning campaigns shown on television in the 1960s, saying those were very “effective”. He said that people were under the impression that (formerly) East Pakistan had been a burden on the country’s population, but today Bangladesh had gotten ahead of Pakistan because of their longterm thinking.”As the population continues to grow, our food security will be affected,” he cautioned.Prime Minister Khan thanked the CJP for raising the matter of population growth which he called a very “serious issue”. He said the government has formed task forces to address population growth, adding that he was glad that all provincial chief ministers were on board for the initiative. Khan noted that the delivery system of contraceptives in the country was an issue but what was actually needed was an ambition to resolve the problem.”There is a big role for the ulema,” he said, citing examples of Iran and Bangladesh where population control campaigns were done from
mosques. The premier said Pakistan too needed to involve its mosques in the campaign. Renowned religious scholar Maulana Tariq Jameel said Imran Khan is the first prime minister who presented the concept of state of Madinah. He said poverty and social pressures are important causes of population growth. Maulana Tariq Jameel said the issue of population control needs to be seriously taken. Here are some facts about Pakistan Population •The current population of Pakistan is 202,395,872 as of Wednesday, December 5, 2018, based on the latest United Nations estimates. •Pakistan population is equivalent to 2.63% of the total world population. •Pakistan ranks number 6 in the list of countries (and dependencies) by population. •The population density in Pakistan is 260 per Km2 (675 people per mi2). •The total land area is 770,880 Km2 (297,638 sq. miles) •39.5 % of the population is urban (79,279,647 people in 2018) •The median age in Pakistan is 22.7 years.

The NHL confirmed the news Tuesday after the board of governors voted unanimously in favour of the decision in Sea Island, Ga. “Today is an exciting and historic day for our league as we expand to one of North America’s most innovative, beautiful and fastest-growing cities,” league commissioner Gary Bettman said. “And we are thrilled that Seattle, a city with a proud hockey history that includes being the home for the first American team ever to win the Stanley Cup, is finally joining the NHL.” Bettman is referring to the now-defunct Seattle Metropolitans, who won the Stanley Cup in 1917. The ownership group, led by majority stakeholder David Bonderman, Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer and CEO Tod Leiweke, will pay a $650-million US expansion fee. By comparison, the Vegas Golden Knights paid a $500-million fee two years ago. The team will begin play in the 2021-22 season. The Seattle ownership group had hopes of
being ready for 2020, but with an $800-million renovation to KeyArena — the former home of the NBA’s Seattle SuperSonics (now Oklahoma City Thunder) — and an unclear completion date, all parties involved decided the later date would be ideal. “They’ve always felt that we should have a little more time to build the arena right,” Bruckheimer said. “We wanted to bring it to 2020-21 because we want to get going right away, but it’s not fair to the fans or to the players to not have a 100 per cent finished arena when we start.” Seattle submitted its application for expansion in February, and said they have already secured more than 30,000 deposits for season tickets. “The league’s expansion decision was only made possible because Seattle will possess the three pillars essential to the success of any franchise: terrific committed ownership, a thriving market and a state-of-the-art venue,” said Bettman. What the Seattle franchise will do is add a 16th team to the Western Conference, matching the number in the East.
New Zealand win by 123 runs, win series 2-1
It seems as though the NHL has been itching for expansion since its major division realignment before the 2013-14 season. That year, the league moved to four total divisions, with 16 teams in the East and 14 in the West. With Vegas joining before the 2017-18 season, and Seattle now primed for an inauguration in two to three years, the NHL will match the NFL with the most teams in any of the four major sports leagues in North America. It will also cause another slight division realignment. The Arizona Coyotes will move from the Pacific to the Central Division, and Seattle will be in the Pacific. In March, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly confirmed that any potential Seattle expansion franchise would be subject to the exact same expansion draft rules as the Golden Knights, and will take place in June 2021. Teams will have two options when protecting players who may be added to the new Seattle team — either seven forwards, three defencemen and one goalie, or eight total skaters and one goalie.
Pakistan vs New Zealand 3rd Test Day 5 Highlights: New Zealand put up a ruthless display to dismiss Pakistan for 156 runs while chasing a target of 280.New Zealand wreaked havoc on the Pakistan batting line up to clinch a serieswinning 123-run victory. The match was on a knife’s edge in the beginning of the final day and it looked Pakistan might stand a chance of saving the match. But the New Zealand bowlers swooped in on the Pakistan middle order and soon, the hosts found themselves 55/5. Babar Azam provided some resistance with the tail-enders before becoming the penultimate wicket to fall. This
Players with no-movement clauses will be protected automatically, while any first- or second-year pros and all unsigned draft choices will not be eligible to be drafted by Seattle. In October, Bettman confirmed Vegas will be exempt for the draft, meaning Seattle will have to choose one player from the NHL’s other 30 teams. Source: CBC News
Yasir Shah breaks pre-World War II record, fastest to 200 Test wickets is the first time in 49 years that New Zealand have beaten Pakistan in a Test series away from home. Pakistan leg-spinner Yasir Shah became the fastest bowler to pick 200th Test wicket breaking an 82-year-old record set by Clarrie Grimmett. Pakistan leg-spinner Yasir Shah created history as he broke an 82-year-old record during the third Test against New Zealand in Abu Dhabi on the fourth day. Picking his fifth wicket in the match, dismissing William Somerville for 4, Shah completed his 200-wicket milestone in the longest format, becoming the fastest bowler to do so.
