A Rudderless Government

HE spectacle of two old rivals greeting each other on the floor of parliament may not be worth noticing. But the handshake between Asif Zardari and Shahbaz Sharif in the house this week was more than just a matter of courtesy. With the PML-N leader having been ‘nabbed’ and the noose tightening around the former president from the PPP, the two opposition parties now find themselves pushed into a corner. The handshake could be a prelude to a more effective alliance against a fumbling PTI government. The latest episode in the political soap opera is getting more thrilling with the opposition going for the jugular. What next? Indeed, there is no imminent threat to the Imran Khan government, but a more strident and united opposition could further jolt a lacklustre and inexperienced administration still trying to find a foothold. Although their top leaders are under a cloud facing graft charges, both the PML-N and the PPP seem to have dropped their initially cautious tone and are now challenging the PTI government more forcefully. Zardari’s latest harangue targeting not only the PTI government but also the security establishment and the judiciary may be driven by his fear of being indicted in money-laundering and corruption charges. But it certainly has turned up the heat. The wily politician that he is, Zardari is trying to use a beleaguered PML-N for his own political chess game.

The PM’s approach to politics and governance is no different from the short, T20 form of cricket. However, it remains to be seen if the PPP leader can escape the ‘accountability trap’ by upping the ante. His remarks last week

reminded one of his speech some three years ago when he took on the military establishment following a crackdown on some of his closest associates. He later left the country and stayed away for more than a year. Zardari then tried to mend fences with the establishment when the axe fell on Nawaz Sharif. It seems now politically expedient for both parties, troubled by a judiciary ostensibly backed by the security establishment, to come closer. The PTI government’s own ineptness and blundering have provided them with an opportunity to regain some lost political ground. Although the government has inherited the economic mess, its inability to deal with one of the most serious economic crisis facing the country in recent years seems to have given the opposition more confidence that the rulers could crumble under the weight of their own blunders. It may be an exaggerated estimation but it is not completely off the mark either. Particularly in Punjab, where the ruling party enjoys a waferthin majority, its governance has added to the perception of the PTI’s vulnerability. Imran Khan has even failed to convince his own party members that Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar, who never held any public office before, was the best choice to lead the administration in the country’s most important and most powerful province. His claim of Buzdar being ‘Wasim Akram-plus’ has exposed Khan’s inability to see the difference between cricket and politics. T20 cricket was not in vogue when Khan was playing, but his approach to politics and governance is no different

from that short version of the game. Buzdar’s performance in the past four months tells a different story. Three power centres — chief minister, governor and speaker of the provincial assembly — have further complicated the problem. The prime minister’s attempt to run the provincial government via remote control has not worked either. The result of recent by-elections showed that the PTI has nor been able to improve upon its mass political support in the province. The failure in Punjab could cost the PTI power. Interestingly, the opposition parties are now using Imran Khan’s own inanity of threatening to call early elections. Addressing a group of TV presenters last month, the prime minister indicated he could go for fresh elections if his government were to be blocked by the opposition. This is unprecedented talk for a government which has hardly been in power for 100 days. It reinforces the popular perception that Imran Khan has yet to get out of the opposition mindset. Such statements only add to political uncertainty and expose Khan’s immaturity. Indeed, the opposition does not take the threat of an early election seriously, but uses the remark as a political tool. It is not just about the opposition joining forces and giving a tough time to the government, it is the disarray within that is also cause for serious concern. Matters may not point to the unravelling of a fragile conglomeration of disparate political groups, but the latest development is ominous. The joining of the MQM and the Balochistan National Party (Mengal) in the

opposition walkout from the National Assembly this week, in protest against the nonproduction of PML-N leader Saad Rafique in the house, is a sign of the growing frustration of the coalition partners. The public dissent of some cabinet members on the party’s Uturn on the chairmanship of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), ceding to the opposition demand, is another example of disorder. It is like a rudderless ship plying turbulent waters. Another issue adding to political uncertainty is the failure of the government to strengthen parliament. It is basically the responsibility of the government to defuse tensions and make it possible for parliament to focus on legislation. On the contrary, it is the PTI that has largely been responsible for the stalemate in the house. It has wasted more than four months because of its irrational position of not accepting the leader of the opposition as chairman of the PAC. Finally, it gave in to the opposition’s pressure, but the dispute over the composition of parliamentary committees remains a cause of impasse in the house. Now things have become more difficult with the opposition raising the stakes. Its initial stance of cooperation in running the business of parliament smoothly seems to have changed with its newfound stridency. The opposition parties are taking advantage of the weakness and ineptness of the ruling party. With no sign of the PTI government taking a more prudent approach or making an effort to get the system to work smoothly, matters are becoming gloomier in the country. By: Zahid Hussain

Pakistan Govt to File Disqualification Case Against Former Prez Zardari

Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) government will soon file a reference against Zardari for not declaring the property in his nomination papers. Islamabad: The Pakistan government plans to file a case before the Election Commission against former President Asif Ali Zardari, seeking his disqualification over concealment of assets in the US, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said on Wednesday. Chaudhry accused Zardari of failing to mention an apartment he allegedly owns in the US in a declaration submitted to the Election Commission of Pakistan. He said the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) government will soon file a reference against Zardari for not declaring the property in his nomination papers. “Our government has decide to move the Election Commission of Pakistan to disqualify

Zardari for hiding his assets,” Chaudhry said. He said Zardari was not “truthful and righteous” under Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution and is therefore not eligible to become a lawmaker.Zardari’s Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) dismissed the allegation as another effort by the Imran Khan government to hide its failure. “We are not afraid of such baseless allegations,” said PPP leader Saeed Ghani. The allegation against the 63-year-old PPP leader surfaced when an accountability court reserved judgment in two corruption cases against former premier Nawaz Sharif. The opposition parties have accused the government of targeting its leaders in the name of accountability. Chaudhry said the investigative agencies were given a “free hand” to investigate any politician

regardless of the party they belonged to whose activities are found to be suspicious, a media report said. Zardari served as the 11th President of Pakistan from 2008 to 2013. In July, Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) declared 20 suspects, including Zardari and his sister, as absconders in a Rs 35 billion money laundering case. Court concludes hearing NAB references against Sharifs; verdict on Monday An accountability court has reserved its verdict in the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) Flagship Investment and Al-Azizia references against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, DawnNewsTV reported on Wednesday. The verdict will be announced on December 24 (Monday), which is the revised deadline set by the Supreme Court to wrap up the references. The accountability court had indicted Sharif in the said references for holding assets beyond his known sources of income in August 2017. Sharif ’s counsel Khawaja Haris today furnished documents related to Hasan Nawaz’s offshore companies and asked accountability court judge Arshad Malik for more time to submit additional documents. The request for a full week’s time was, however, turned down by the judge, who told Haris that he can submit the documents in court latest by Monday. Haris, while presenting his final argument today, told the judge that “Nawaz Sharif has never admitted that he received a salary from Capital FZE”, adding that his client’s position in the said company was “honourary”. The counsel claimed that Sharif had obtained employment in Capital FZE for visa purposes only. Not a penny’s corruption proven against me: Sharif Sharif, following the hearing, had a brief chat with media

representatives outside the court, during which he claimed that “not a penny of corruption was proven against me”.“This was my 78th appearance in this case and in the one before we had appeared 87 times,” he said. “This was a very painful [experience]. “I have been serving the people for 35 years. I have been the chief minister twice and the prime minister thrice. I am very happy that I have done my duty, and I think that since I have stepped in politics I have never indulged in corruption nor have I ever misused my powers.” The former prime minister also lauded the media for its responsible reporting on the cases against him and “conveying the facts to the nation”. ‘Mini-budget’ planned as IMF, govt still differ

ISLAMABAD: Preparations are on for introducing the third money bill of this fiscal year, while discussions between the government and the International Monetary Fund have been ramped up. Reports following a late evening hourlong video conference between the government and the IMF suggest that differences persist between both sides over a broad spectrum of issues. Finance Minister Asad Umar announced his intention to bring a new money bill when he appeared before a parliamentary panel on Wednesday morning along with State Bank Governor Tariq Bajwa. Informed sources said that during the video conference, the

government and the Fund could not agree on the timing and pace of the fiscal adjustment and structural reforms. They said the IMF mission raised questions over Pakistan’s memorandum of economic and financial policies (MEFP) submitted last week and the finance minister responded. The questions related to the proposed fiscal adjustment, energy pricing, monetary and exchange rate policy and structural reforms contained in the government’s MEFP, an informed source told Dawn, adding that the IMF team had reservations over viability of the government’s proposals in all areas, although the degree of disagreement varied. The mission also raised questions over the way forward on the state-owned entities. Separately, the IMF’s resident representative to Pakistan confirmed in a short message to Dawn that the plan referred to by the finance minister had been received by them. “The Pakistani authorities have shared with us a document called ‘Pakistan: Stabilisation and Medium-Term Sustainable Growth Framework’,” she said via text message from Washington DC where she is these days.“We are in the process of reviewing this particular document and the objective continues to be to achieve understanding on policies and reforms that could be the base of a staff-level agreement.” Source: dawn.com

‘Kashmiris must be allowed to decide their future’: PM condemns Indian violence against civilians

“We will raise [the] issue of India’s human rights violations in IOK & demand UNSC [UN Security Council] fulfil its J&K plebiscite commitment,” the premier said in a tweet. “Kashmiris must be allowed to decide their future,” Khan said, stressing that the Kashmir conflict could only be resolved through dialogue and “not violence & killings”. The prime minister’s statement came a day after at least seven civilians were killed and over three dozen injured when Indian forces fired at protesters in occupied Kashmir. Residents had accused troops of directly spraying gunfire into the crowds. Differentiate between ‘Kashmir issue and killing spree’: Qureshi Earlier in the evening, Foreign Minis-

ter Shah Mahmood Qureshi called on global human rights organisations to take notice of the atrocities by Indian forces in occupied Kashmir, saying he was hopeful that the groups would raise their voice against state terrorism. While speaking at a press conference alongside Dr Mohammad Faisal, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Qureshi recalled the victims of attacks by Indian occupation forces — including those who have lost their lives and those who have suffered injuries because of pellet guns. Addressing the United Nations and Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), Qureshi said on Sunday: “I am not talking about the [Kashmir] issue; I am talking about humanity.” “Even if you have some difficulty rais-

ing your voice about the Kashmir issue, there shouldn’t be any hesitance raising your voice against the brutality towards humans.” According to Qureshi, the use of force by India intensified after the death of Burhan Wani in 2016. In 2018, Qureshi said it had reached a “strange limit” and so far, close to 500 casualties had been registered with a few days still remaining in the year. Qureshi told the media that prior to his press conference, he had written letters to the UN secretary general, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights — who had also released a report on abuses in Kashmir in June 2018, and to the OIC secretary general. In light of Saturday’s escalation in occupied Kashmir, the foreign minister said he has asked the officials to intervene with

haste “so that people could get relief from this brutality”. He added that he has directed Pakistan’s missions abroad to highlight this issue in their countries and to apprise their interlocutors of the situation and demand that they play a role in ending this brutality. Qureshi said that he has also spoken to the OIC secretary general on the phone and requested him to call a ministerial meeting of the OIC conflict group. “Pakistan is ready to host [the meeting] and make arrangements in Islamabad. If there are any difficulties in coming to Pakistan, it could also be held in Jeddah.” Source: dawn.com

British Airways to resume flights to Pakistan after a decade Islamabad, Pakistan - United Kingdom airline British Airways will resume direct flights to Pakistan in June, a decade after suspending services to the South Asian nation over security concerns, the carrier has announced. The service will resume with three flights per week between the two countries’ capitals, London and Islamabad, British Airways head of sales for Asia

Pacific and the Middle East Robert Williams told a news conference in Islamabad on Tuesday. “It’s exciting to be flying between Islamabad and Heathrow from next year, which we believe will be particularly popular with the British Pakistani community who want to visit, or be visited by, their relatives,” Williams said. The UK is home to an estimated 1.17

million people of Pakistani origin, according to the UK’s Office for National Statistics, making it one of the largest diaspora hosts for the South Asian country. The Pakistani government has lauded the decision as an indicator of improving security and economic investment opportunities in the country. Source: aljazeera.com

Trump administration moves to ban Russia, Turkey, Iran fail in push bump stock firearm devices for new Syrian constitution

The Trump administration has moved to officially ban bump stocks, which allow semi-automatic weapons to fire rapidly like automatic firearms, and has made them illegal to possess beginning in late March. The devices will be banned under a federal law that prohibits machine guns, a senior Justice Department official said on Tuesday. Bump stocks became a focal point of the national gun control debate after they were used in October 2017 when a man opened fire from his Las Vegas hotel suite at a crowd at a country music concert below, killing 58 people and injuring hundreds in the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history. The regulation, which was signed by acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker on Tuesday morning, will go into effect 90 days after it is formally published in the Federal Register, which is expected to happen on Friday, the Justice Department official said. The official wasn’t authorised to discuss the matter publicly before the regulation’s formal publication and spoke to the Associated Press news agency on condition of anonymity. Other US media publications also reported the news of the regulation. In March, President Donald Trump said his administration would “ban” the devices,

which he said “turn legal weapons into illegal machines” Shortly after the president’s comments, the Justice Department announced that it had started the process to amend federal firearms regulations to define bump stocks as machine guns. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives sought public comment on the proposal, drawing more than 35,000 comments. The amended regulations reverse a 2010 ATF decision that found bump stocks did not amount to machine guns and could not be regulated unless Congress changed existing firearms law or passed a new one Source: aljazeera.com

Russia, Iran and Turkey, supporters of the main sides in Syria’s complex civil war, on Tuesday failed to agree on the makeup of a United Nations-sponsored Syrian constitutional committee but called for it to convene early next year to kick off a viable peace process. In a joint statement read out by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov after the trio met the UN Syria peace envoy, Staffan de Mistura, in Geneva, they said the new initiative should be guided “by a sense of compromise and constructive engagement”. The foreign ministers of the three nations had hoped to seal their joint proposal on a committee - which could usher in elections and win UN blessing for it. But the statement by the three made no mention of the composition of the panel, pointing to lingering disagreement over lists of candidates submitted by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his rebel adversaries. The Syrian government, which is backed by Moscow and Tehran, has not yet agreed to the committee, saying it will only support a process that alters Syria’s existing constitution. De Mistura, addressing a separate news conference, made clear the three powers had not nailed down a workable political forum yet, after years of abortive attempts at ending

the bloody seven-year war. “I believe there is an extra mile to go in the marathon effort to ensure the necessary package for a credible, balanced and inclusive constitutional committee, and for including a balanced chairing arrangement and drafting body and voting threshold - to be established under UN auspices in Geneva,” he said. De Mistura, who will be replaced as UN envoy on January 7, praised the “significant joint input” from the three powers. The meeting marked a final moment in his fouryear tenure, which did not produce a breakthrough for peace. Source: aljazeera.com

Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir has become the first Arab League leader to visit Damascus since the war in Syria began nearly eight years ago. Syria’s state-run news agency SANA said al-Bashir was greeted on Sunday at the capital’s airport by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad before they both headed to the presidential palace. The two leaders discussed bilateral ties and the “situations and crises faced by many Arab countries”, the Syrian presidency said. Photographs released by SANA showed them shaking hands at the airport in front of a Russian jet that appears to have brought the Sudanese president to Syria. Russia, a key

ally of Assad, maintains an airbase southeast of the Syrian city of Latakia. SANA quoted al-Bashir as saying during the meeting that he hopes Syria will recover its important role in the region as soon as possible. He also affirmed Sudan’s readiness to provide all that it can to support Syria’s territorial integrity. For his part, Assad thanked al-Bashir for his visit, asserting that it will give strong momentum for restoring relations between the two countries “to the way it was before the war on Syria”, SANA said. The reason for al-Bashir’s visit was not immediately clear. Source: aljazeera.com

Outgoing United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley commented on Washington’s yet-to-be-announced plan for Israeli-Palestinian peace, saying “it is much longer” and takes advantage of new technology. Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on Tuesday, Haley gave no tangible details of what has been dubbed by US President Donald Trump as the “deal of the century”. “It is much longer. It contains much more thoughtful detail,” Haley told the council which she said she has read. “It recognises that realities on the ground in the Middle East have changed in powerful and important ways.” She added the document has a lot both sides will like and things they will not like. “The Palestinians have everything to

gain by engaging in peace negotiations,” Haley said. “This plan will be different from all previous ones. The critical question is whether the response to it will be any different.” Source: aljazeera.com

Yemeni mother wins visa fight to Sudan’s Bashir first Arab leader to visit see dying son in US, lawyer says Syria since war began

After public outcry, the United States has granted a visa waiver to a Yemeni woman whose dying son is on life support in a California hospital, the family’s lawyer said on Tuesday. Shaima Swileh is expected to arrive in California’s Bay Area on Wednesday evening, according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Sacramento Valley (CAIR-SV). “This is the happiest day

of my life,” said Ali Hassan, Swileh’s husband, an American citizen.“Just last week I was about to pull him off life support ... This will allow us to mourn in dignity,” he said in a statement. Swileh’s case prompted widespread outrage this week after reports surfaced that the young mother had been waiting for more than a year for a decision on a visa waiver. Swileh’s visa application was rejected last year because of travel restrictions introduced in the so-called “Muslim ban”, which bars individuals from several Muslim-majority countries from entering the US. Hassan had previously said that he had requested that the Department of State expedite a decision on Swileh’s visa waiver plea so she could say goodbye to their son Abdulla, who has a rare degenerative brain disease and may not survive much longer. UK government steps up no-deal Brexit planning

London, United Kingdom - The government of the United Kingdom has ramped up preparations for a no-deal departure from the European Union amid widespread criticism of British Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit deal. In a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, ministers approved £2bn ($2.5bn) worth of funding for government departments to help them prepare for the UK leaving the 28-member bloc without a formal agreement on the terms of its withdrawal. All departments must also move to fully implement their emergency no-deal contingency plans, the cabinet agreed. Thousands of letters will be sent to businesses throughout the country advising them how to prepare for such a scenario. “Cabinet agreed that with just over three months until our exit from the European Union, we have now reached the point where we need to ramp up these [no-deal] preparations. This means we will now set in motion the remaining elements of our no-deal plans,” a

Nikki Haley hints at yet to be unveiled ‘deal of the century’

spokesperson for May said. The UK is scheduled to depart the EU on March 29 next year, almost three years after 52 percent of Britons voted to quit the bloc during a divisive referendum held in June 2016. Economic forecasts suggest a no-deal departure could have a catastrophic impact on the UK’s economy. The Bank of England, the UK’s central bank, has warned Britain’s gross domestic product could shrink by up to eight percent in such a scenario. The government, meanwhile, has forecast a potential economic slump of more than nine percent in the wake of a no-deal Brexit. Source: aljazeera.com

No early election: PM vows next fed- Canada-China relations at ‘low point’ could fall further: analyst eral vote to be held in October 2019 The detentionsand of two Canadians in China OTTAWA – Mark your calendars, and set those countdown clocks: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says that the next federal election will not be called early. “We will have an election on the fixed election date of October 21, I believe it is,” Trudeau said during a sit-down interview with Evan Solomon, host of CTV’s Question Period. Almost as evergreen as the top of the Peace Tower, early election rumours ramp up once the next federal campaign is less than a year away. Though, with this pronouncement Trudeau seems certain that the election will happen as scheduled. To be seen is how long the campaign period will be. Under current federal election law, general elections are held on the third Monday of October, in the fourth year after the previous federal election, but this does not prevent an election from happening earlier. The Governor General of Canada has the power to, following the advice of the prime minister, call an election at another date and dissolve the current Parliament. During the last election, then-prime minister Stephen Harper kicked off the campaign considerably early, resulting in a 78-day race. The minimum length of a campaign is 36 days. Trudeau thinks the ballot box question is going to be: “Who has the right plan to ensure a better future for Canadians?” Speaking to what he sees as being his biggest challenge in 2019, Trudeau took a dig at his competitors, and restated an oft-repeated line of attack on the Conservatives. “Demonstrate that a thoughtful, reasonable approach to solving our problems is better than the politics of fear, division, of stirring up populist anger and not really providing answers that are longer than fit on a bumper sticker,” Trudeau said. Questioned about how he plans to communicate his broken promises come 2019, from electoral reform, to balanced budgets, Trudeau sought to defend his record by referencing the record of his predecessor. “After 10 years of the lowest growth rate since the Great Depression under Stephen Harper,

may not be the end of worsening relations between the two countries, according to an analyst and two former diplomats. “While Canada-China relations have hit a low point, we may still be going lower,” Scott McKnight, managing editor of the China Open Research Network at the University of Toronto said Monday on CTV’s Your Morning. Businessman Michael Spavor and onleave diplomat Michael Kovrig have both been detained in China in apparent retaliation for the arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver. Meng has been released from custody on bail and is awaiting a hearing on whether she will be extradited to the U.S. to face charges of fraud. “We have to unpack what exactly the Chi-

nese are going for. They’re looking to put as much pressure on the Canadian government as possible,” McKnight said. “The way the Chinese are interpreting this is [that] Canada has one of their own, and they want her back.”John McCallum, Canada’s ambassador to China, met with Kovrig on Friday and Spavor on Sunday.. Freeland says Trump metal tariffs ‘contradict’ new NAFTA and will have to go

Metro Vancouver’s housing crisis is infecting other industries, and some local nurses are feeling the symptoms. Health care workers across the region are leaving because they’re unable to afford to live near work, or pay for parking every day if they commute.“We’re stretched really thin,” said Christine Sorensen, president of the BC Nurses’ Union. So thin, the union says, the emergency room at BC Children’s Hospital recently had 10 nurses resign, citing housing inaffordability. The sudden decrease in staffing levels pushed another to transfer, claiming the conditions were unsafe. “Nurses are compensated fairly and recognized for the work that they do, but it concerns me if nurses can’t afford to live and work here,” Sorensen said. “It’s difficult to provide safe patient care when we’re not fully staffed.” Nurses earn an average salary of about $70,000 a year, but Sorensen said she often hears from nurses that it’s still difficult to get by in a city where the average single-family home costs more than a million dollars. There is currently a 30 per cent vacancy in the ER at the hospital, the union told CTV News. The hospital’s chief operating officer says BC Children’s was able to maintain a

safe level of staffing during that time, and added that the hospital is growing. It’s in a new facility, meaning more jobs are being created.“We’ve recruited a number of positions and we have a new group of nurses starting in early January,” Linda Lemke said. She told CTV News that among the hospital’s strategies are proactive hiring, working with educational institutions and training nurses on the campus for specialty care. OTTAWA -- U.S. President Donald Trump’s steel and aluminum tariffs contradict a key component of the new North American trade agreement -- the pivotal section on autos -which will ultimately lead to their demise, Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland says.U.S. businesses are making that argument, and Freeland told The Canadian Press that gives momentum to Canada’s ongoing efforts to have the levies lifted in 2019. The minister said Canada’s fight to remove the tariffs, imposed by the U.S. president, is being aided by the broader calls from American business to have them to be lifted before the new continental trade pact is ratified. Their argument centres on the fact that a major section of the new agreement -- known as the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement, or CUSMA -- focuses on raising the content requirements of North American-built cars, Freeland said. The rules on origin for auto-

OTTAWA - Three weeks after striking postal workers were forced back to work, Canada Post says it’s caught up on most parcel delivery backlogs that had been created by rotating walkouts. The Crown corporation says its normal holiday delivery service guarantees have been restored across most of the country, except Vancouver. The federal government legislated an end to job action by postal workers on Nov. 27 after Canada Post complained that a backlog of parcels was reaching historic levels ahead of the crucial holiday shopping period. At the time, Canada Post warned the backlog could take until the end of January to clear up.Canada Post said it delivered about four million packages between last Friday and

yesterday, and will likely be able to deliver items ordered online in time for Christmas. But it also depends on where the parcels are coming from as Canada Post expects some shipments from outside Canada might only be delivered in early January. Source: bc.ctvnews.ca

we’ve created strong growth in Canada. We’ve helped millions of Canadians with things like the Canada Child Benefit. We’ve invested in infrastructure, we’ve moved forward on reconciliation with Indigenous peoples in real ways,” Trudeau said. Several times during the interview, Trudeau mentioned Harper by name, more times than he did current Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer. He did not mention the NDP or their leader Jagmeet Singh, even once.Expected to be a key issue in the lead up to, and potentially during the campaign, is the federal carbon tax. Despite the growing opposition to the plan to put a price on carbon emissions, Trudeau appeared confident with his positon on the issue. “In 2019, if someone wants to be prime minister of this country, one of the fundamental responsibilities is to build a cleaner economy for the future and he has demonstrated a complete unwillingness, not even not to not present a plan, but to actually admit that there is a problem,” Trudeau said of Scheer. Responding to Trudeau’s interview, Conservative Deputy Leader Lisa Raitt said that the 2019 election is going to be about how people feel when they go to the ballot box.“Wages are not growing as quickly as inflation, and taxes are going up… and the new carbon tax coming in. That’s going to weigh heavily on people. They’re going to feel it. They’re going to feel when they make choices and what they’re going to do for their kids, or how they’re going to save money for the future, or their retirement,” said Raitt. Source: bc.ctvnews.ca

‘Intertwined-Divine Signs-Symbols & Science’!

M

ost amazingly the Divine Signs and symbols including the Multi-national Multi tribes and Islamic practices are connected to Creator-GOD representing HIM and HIS Prophets, which are intertwined like the Olympic colorful rings, presenting the reality of divine authority of AllahCreator of the Universe, Supreme Being Lord of the heavens and earth. Scientifically, proven the Big Bang theory. HE is the originator of the Heavens and Earth (Quran 6-101). “Do not the unbelievers see that the Heavens and the earth were joined (entity) together as one unit of creation before WE clove them asunder? WE made from water every living thing. Quran 21:30 “And the heaven, WE built it with craftsmanship and We are still expanding it”. (Q.51-47). Right from the beginning of this world to today, the miraculous signs and symbols are still present today. The most magnificent huge Sky, Huge Mountains as Pegs, (Q.78: 6), 7 Gates of Heavens and Hell, Solar system, Planets, asteroids, Comets, meteoroids, beautiful glittering Stars like Diamonds, the shining Sun, the magnificent Moon: “all the celestial bodies swim along, each in its rounded course (Q. 21:33): “Do you not see how HE created 7 Heavens in layers, and placed the Moon as a Light in them and made the Sun a blazing Lamp? (Quran 71-15, 16). Most extraordinary, Mt. Hira-Jabal al Noor, Mt. Sinai and Mt. Arafat

still stands in the Sacred land presenting Prophet Moses (AS), Messenger Muhammad (SAWS) and Adam (AS) and his wife Eve-Hawa (RA) who met again at Mt. Arafat after coming down from Heaven for disobedience of Divine law of ‘Forbidden Tree’, misguided and trusting the evil spirit Satan-anti-Allah-Creator-GOD. Existence of Trees, beautiful Flowers that we use for Funerals, and weddings, male, female, Birth, death, Angels, Jinn, Prophets, Dajjal-antiChrist-anti-GOD, concept of Halal, Harram, forbidden Tree, and belief of One Creator-GOD representing

HIM and HIS authority. Still in existence the miraculous oldest Well of Zam Zam water presenting Lady Hagar wife of Prophet Abraham (AS) and his first born Son Ishmael. The Holy Well is still providing Holy Water to millions of Pilgrims. “it is HE who sends down the rain from the sky, from it ye drink and out of it grows the Vegetation on which ye feed your Cattle: with it He produces corn, olives date palms grapes, and every kind of fruits. (Q 16-4-11) ******Life giving Water is so important that Messenger Muhammad SAWS said: Respect water and Drink it sitting down. river. “Last hour will not come until It is HE who has left free the two the land of Arab peninsula filled with bodies of flowing water; one palat- water. Also still stands the prophecies and Scientific discovery about the Global warming, the Geological condition of Saudi Arabia: “The North Polar Iceberg moving slowly to south ward close to Arabian peninsula”. “Arabian peninsula again will become the land of Orchards and

the first House of worship for mankind to worship One GOD, was first built by H. Adam (AS) on GOD’s instruction in the most sacred City of Makkah: later it was almost destroyed by the Pagans worshipers of human gods but then re-built by Prophet Abraham (AS) and his first born son Prophet Ishmael (AS), whose intended sacrifice to please GOD was in fact a test of GOD, and still celebrated as an EID of Sacrifice-Eid Ul Adha. Including the Astronomical 14c old practice of Hajj (Hag in Hebrew, going round in circle) anti-clockwise 7 times circumambulation of the Kaba reflects the Orbital movement, also coincides with the ‘Phylactery’ the Cube shape of Kaba containing parchment of Torah, Deut. & Exodus: Phylactery worn and wound 7 times around on the left arm facing the heart and on the forehead, given by Prophet Moses (AS) to his people at the time of his rescue mission of Israelite slaves from the claws of notorious King Pharaoh, as a ‘Sign’ of GOD, saying “Let my people go”, and to leave the Pyramid Triangular Slavery system to the Cubic Square System of Freedom in the DesertArabia land. (Ref. Writer Avi Lipkin). Exodus-freedom of slaves by Prophet Moses (AS) was the most significant period celebrated as an Eid Day on 10th of Ashura by our Jewish and Israelites brethren, by fasting one day in gratitude to Allah and later in Islamic period Messenger Muhammad (SAWS) recommended to Muslims to continue to celebrate the victory of Prophet Moses (AS) and thank Allah for helping him and fast 2 days of Ashura in Islamic new year month Muharram, showing gratitude to Allah.. That was also an era of receiving 10

commandments from Creator-GOD, also the time of a righteous Priest and a Father in Law of Prophet Moses (AS) Jethro, known as Midianite-Ishmaelites descendant of Prophet Ishmael (AS) the first born of Prophet Abraham (AS) who was antiIdol worshiping said to his Father: “Takest thou Idols for gods?” (Q. 6: 71, 74). “Shall we call on others besides GOD things that can do us neither good nor harm: “Why worship that which heareth not and seeth not and can profit thee nothing? (Q.19 42). Such offensive worship of human god Baal (Bhagwan) was destroyed. (Ref. Bible). The signs of ‘intertwine’ are showing in millions of Muslims of different tribes, communities of different religious persuasion intertwined as one, by continuing the faithfulness to Creator GOD and HIS final religion Islam known as religion of Prophet Abraham (AS) of worship of ONE CREATOR-GOD- that was preached by all the Prophets and Messengers who too were Muslims -whoever obeys GOD’S commandments are known as Muslims. Such Millions of obedient servants of GOD consists of Quraish, Arabs, Jews, 12 tribes of Bani Israel-Jacob (AS), the Kashmiris, Persians, Punjabis, Assyrians, Hindus-Indians-Aryans, Bani Manasseh-Manu, Ethiopians, Somalians, Asians, Africans, etc. Known as chosen people but after obeying and accepting Creator’s final Revelation continued the covenant with HIM, climbed the final step of graduation, fulfilled the Will of Allah and became twice chosen and favorite. Kudos to the above tribes of Millions of Muslims glorifying the Creator-GOD and representing the Kaba and its 4 corners - N.S.E.W. Their dutiful covenant declaring to mankind: Your problem is my problem”, and asking for help to One Creator-GOD. Article sponsored By: Sr..Gulshan Alani

FAITH On the authority of Uqbah ibn Amir (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:I heard the messenger of Allah (‫ )ﷺ‬say: Your Lord delights at a shepherd who, on the peak of a mountain crag, gives the call to prayer and prays. Then Allah (glorified and exalted be He) say: Look at this servant of Mine, he gives the call to prayer and performs the prayers; he is in awe of Me. I have forgiven My servant [his sins] and have admitted him to Paradise. It was related by an-Nasa’i with a good chain of authorities.H .SB# 06

“Prophet Jesus (ISA)” in the Quran honored in this world and in the Next World

BY: SYED ABUL ALA MAUDUDI esus or Isa in Arabic (peace be upon him) is of great significance in both Islam and Christianity. However, there are differences in terms of beliefs about the nature and life occurrences of Jesus . There are about 71 verses in the Quran that refer to Prophet Jesus. Following is a translation and explanation of Chapter 3 verses 44 thru 48 by Sayyid Abul Ala Mawdudi,. English rendering by Muhammad Akbar. O Muhammad, these are the “unseen” things, We are revealing to you: you were not present there when the priests of the Temple were casting lots by throwing their quills to decide which of them should be the guardian of Mary: 43 nor were you with them when they were arguing about it. Quran 3:44 Note 43: As Mary was a girl who had been dedicated by her mother to the Temple in the way of God, the question of her guardianship had become a problem for the keepers because of her sex. They were therefore casting lots to decide the delicate problem. And remember when the angels said, “O Mary, God sends you the good news of a Command of His: his name shall be Messiah, Jesus son of Mary. He will be highly

and he will be among those favored by God. He will speak to the people alike when in the cradle and when grown up, and he will be among the righteous.” Hearing this, Mary said, “How, O Lord, shall I have a son, when no man has ever touched me?” “Thus shall it be,”44 was the answer. God creates whatever He wills. When He decrees a thing, He only says, “Be” and it is. (Continuing their message, the angels added,) “And God will teach him the Book and wisdom, and give him the knowledge of the Torah and the Gospel, and appoint him as His Messenger to the children of Israel.” Quran 3:45-49 Note 45 That is, “These Signs are clear enough to convince you that I have been sent by that God Who is the Creator and Absolute Ruler of this universe, provided that you are not obdurate but are willing to accept the Truth.” Note 46 That is, “This is yet another proof of the fact that I have been sent by God. If I had been a false prophet I would have invented my own religion and by virtue of these miracles striven to divert you from your previous Faith to the New creed. But I profess the same original religion to be true and confirm the same teachings which

were brought by the Prophets before me.” The fact that Jesus taught the same religion that had been presented by Moses and the other Prophets is supported even by the existing Gospels. For example, according to the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus declared in the Sermon on the Mount: “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the Prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.” (5: 17). One of the Pharisees, who was a lawyer, asked Jesus, “Which is the great commandment in the law?” He replied: Note 48 This shows that like all other Prophets, Jesus also based his teachings on the following three fundamentals: The Supreme Authority to which mankind should submit and surrender exclusively belongs to God and all the social and moral systems should be built entirely on it. Being a representative of the same Paramount Power, a prophet must be obeyed unconditionally.

When a Man Dies, His Good Deeds Comes to an End

(Steps of the Seekers) of Imam Ibn Al-Qaiyym: On the Deeper Meanings of Gratitude – Part 2 By Dr. Ovamir Anjum The Proper Way to Contemplate the Quran THREE THINGS AID proper contemplation (tafakkur): (1) Thinking of the transience and shortness of this life and avoiding long hopes; (2) reflecting on the Quran; and (3) avoiding corruptions that ail the heart. o recognize the shortness of this life and nearness of death is most beneficial for the heart and impels the believer to take advantage of every moment of his or her life, moves the focus of attention and concern to the Abode of Eternity, encourages one to compensate for what is missing in the preparation for the journey, and makes one abstemious in matters of this ephemeral life. If one persists in such contemplation, it leads one to see the truth of this life—and how little of it is left—less than what remains on one’s finger when dipped into an ocean, while the ocean is the eternal life of the Hereafter. The sun of this world has set—as if just setting down the hilltops in the evening. The conditions and signs prophesied to mark the end of times have come true. Death and you, as if two friends on their way to meet each other—and any moment you two shall meet and embrace each other. Sufficient it is to recall the words of the Almighty: One day He will gather them together: (It will be) as if they had lived only an hour of a day—just getting to know each other… [Surat Yunus, 10:45] On the day when they see it, it will be as if they had but lived for an evening or its morning. [Surat Al-Nazi‘at, 79:46] On the day when they see that which they are promised (it will seem to them) as though they had lived for but an hour of daylight. A clear message. Shall any be destroyed save the transgressors? [Surat AlAhqaf, 46:35] In whispers will they consult each other: “You lived not longer than ten (days); We know best what they say, when the fairest of them in course would say: (In fact) you lived for not more than a day! [Surat Ta Ha, 20:103-104] Once the messenger of Allah said to his Companions at a time when the evening

T

was drawing near and the sun was barely above the mountains, What is left of this world compared to what has passed of it is no more than what has been left of this day compared to what has passed of it. (Ahmad)

Contemplating the Quran

Reflection upon the Quran is accomplished when the heart sees its meanings, and the mind becomes focused on grasping its implications and the purpose of its revelation. Mere mindless recitation is not sufficient. God Almighty has said: (It is) a Book We have revealed to you abounding in good that they may ponder over its verses, and that those endowed with understanding may be mindful. [Surat Sad, 38:29] Do they not then reflect on the Quran, or are their hearts locked up? [Surat Muhammad, 47:24] We have made it an Arabic Quran so that you may understand. [Surat Al-Zukhruf, 43:3] Commenting on this latter ayah, Al-Hasan [Al-Basri] remarked, He has revealed the Quran so that it may be pondered, reflected, and acted upon. There is nothing more beneficial for a servant of God, both in matters of this life and the next, than thinking about the Words of God—meditating upon them for long periods of time, concentrating one’s mind (thoughts) and heart (emotions, feelings, desires) on these words. This meditation upon the meanings of the verses of the Quran: Meditation endows one with true knowledge of good and evil—of their essence, their means and their consequences. It establishes the foundations of the fortification of faith in one’s heart, raises its walls and strengthens its pillars. It shows one the images of Heaven and Hell, shows him around (as if in a museum of human history) the past nations and peoples and lays bare their great and tragic days, points out to him the immense lessons hidden in these events and makes him recognize the justice and mercy of God upon His servants. It tells him about God, His Names, attributes and deeds. It shows him the path that leads to Him and the rewards that await the one who successfully treads His path. It warns him of the robbers and the calamities on the path. To sum up, meditation upon the meanings of the Quran gives the servant True knowledge of his Lord

The way to reach Him The generous reward that His Lord has prepared for him Knowledge of what Satan calls towards The ways that lead to it The humiliation and chastisement that lie on this ignominious path It is necessary for the servant to know and ponder upon these above six matters. Reflection upon the Quran shows one the Hereafter as if he were witnessing it with his own eyes; it diminishes this world in his eyes as if he were not in it. It bestows upon him the ability to distinguish between the truth and the falsehood in every disputed matter of this world. It shows him the truth as the truth, and falsehood as falsehood.

The message of the Quran

Revolves around the concept of Tawhid, its evidence and manifestations, and other attributes of Allah—all marked by perfection and infinitude—in which the Almighty is unique. Includes the knowledge of Allah’s apostles, evidence of their truthfulness, and their rights (upon the humanity who is indebted to them and must honor and follow them). Speaks of belief in Allah’s angels, and in the Last Day. Speaks volumes of the greatness and inevita-

God alone is entitled to prescribe laws and regulations for making things lawful or unlawful, pure and impure; consequently all laws imposed by others must be abolished. Thus it is clear that Jesus, Moses, Muhammad and all other Prophets (God’s peace be upon them all) had one and the same mission. Those people who say that different Prophets were sent with different missions and to fulfill different aims, are gravely mistaken. Anyone, who is delegated by the Absolute Master of the Universe to His subjects, cannot have any other mission than to prevent the people, from becoming disobedient to and independent of Him, and to forbid them to set others to rank with God as partners in His Authority in any way. For, they are sent to invite the people to surrender and submit and be loyal to the Almighty God and worship Him alone.........See more details at www.islamicity.org/6405/jesus-in-the-quran/

bility of the Last Day which will bring with it the eternal torment for some and eternal luxury and joy for others. Calls the servant towards his Lord with beautiful promises and warns him of a terrible punishment. Guides him through the confusion of human opinions (aara’) and madhahib (sub-paths, narrower paths within Islam or outside it—tr.) to the one right path. Strengthens him against the paths of innovation and deviation. Encourages him to be vigilant in being thankful to his Exalted Lord, and be persevering in calamities and difficulties that he might encounter in Allah’s path. It calls out persistently: Beware, beware! Hold on to God and ask for His help … and say, Sufficient for me is Allah—and He is the best advocate. There is much to say on avoiding the corruptions that ail the heart, but we will leave this for another day. Source: aljumuah.com/

Making life more affordable for you and your family

By John Horgan Too many people in B.C. have struggled to make ends meet and find a home they can afford. The holiday season often adds the financial strain of travel and entertaining, and combined with the high costs of rent, child care and other expenses, it can be overwhelming. Our government has been working hard to make life more affordable for all British Columbians – through the holiday season and throughout the year. The housing crisis was allowed to escalate for over a decade without government action. We’re taking strong steps to tackle it and deliver affordable housing for B.C. families. We’ve made the largest investment

in affordable housing in B.C.’s history – more than $7 billion over 10 years. We’re working to curb demand and bring in protections for renters and manufactured home owners. And we’re using tools to moderate the housing market, like the speculation and vacancy tax. Through the Building BC: Community Housing Fund, we are building 14,000 new affordable homes for low and middle-income individuals, seniors and families, which is our first step to build 114,000 homes for people over the next 10 years. To help renters, we are taking the recommendations of B.C.’s Rental Housing Task Force and cutting the annual allowable rent increase by 2%, while increasing funding to the Residential Tenancy Branch. We also closed the fixed-term loophole and the geographic loophole, which gives renters more protection from unfair evictions and rent increases. To care for kids and help lift families up, we created a child care fee reduction of up to $350 per month for eligible child care spaces. We also introduced the Affordable Child Care Benefit earlier this year, which is available to families with a yearly income of up to $110,000, and can save families up to $15,000 per year, per child. To make licensed child care more accessible, we invested $237 million into the creation of 22,000 new licensed child care spaces around the province. Our government is going to keep working hard to make life more affordable for you and your family, improve the services you count on, and build a better province with more opportunity for the people who live here. So you can have less stress this holiday season – and year round.

Erdogan: New military operation in Syria to ‘start at any moment’

Turkey may launch a new military operation in northern Syria at any moment, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, adding US President Donald Trump had given a positive response to Turkey’s plans. Erdogan’s remarks on Monday came days after he announced Turkish forces would launch a new cross-border operation against the USbacked Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) to the east of the Euphrates River in northern Syria. The YPG is considered a terrorist organisation by Ankara. American troops are also

located to the east of the Euphrates River. Erdogan spoke on the phone with Trump on Friday and they agreed to ensure “more effective coordination” between their countries’ military operations in Syria. ”I spoke with Trump. The terrorists must leave the east of the Euphrates. If they don’t go, we will remove them,” Erdogan vowed during a televised speech in the central province of Konya. Turkey views the YPG as an offshoot of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has battled against the Turkish state since 1984.

The PKK is blacklisted as a terrorist group by the US and European Union, while the YPG is not. “They [YPG] are a source of discomfort with their terror corridor” along Turkey’s border, Erdogan said. Although Erdogan said Turkey could start an operation “at any moment”, he appeared to indicate there was room for negotiation with the US.Since we are strategic partners with America, then we must do what is necessary,” said Erdogan. But he added the US “must fulfil promises” without giving further details. Source: aljazeera.com

A United Nations-brokered ceasefire deal has come into effect in the strategic Yemeni city of Hodeidah, but reports say sporadic fighting is still taking place in the embattled port. After a week of consultations in the Swedish town of Rimbo, representatives from the Houthi movement and the Saudi-UAE-backed government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi on Thursday agreed to pull back their fighters to allow the deployment of UN-supervised neutral forces and the establishment of humanitarian corridors. According to Yemeni officials and residents, intense fighting erupted in the final hours

before the ceasefire took effect at midnight local time (21:00 GMT), with artillery shelling and heavy machine gun fire shaking districts in the south and east of the key city. The clashes between pro-government forces and Houthi rebels appeared to have subsided in the early hours of Tuesday as the truce was implemented. Yet, the intermittent sound of machine guns was reportedly still heard in parts of the city, a lifeline for millions of Yemenis on the brink of starvation. A pro-government official told AFP news agency that sporadic clashes were ongoing in the east of the city, which has been held by the Houthis

ised weapons between the Litani River and the UN-monitored border between Israel and Lebanon. Under the resolution, Lebanon’s army is responsible for security on its side of the border in a zone from which any other armed force, including Hezbollah, is banned.Israel accuses Hezbollah of digging the tunnels. The Lebanese armed group has not commented on the UN operation. On Sunday, the Israeli army said it discovered a fourth tunnel which it proceeded to destroy as part of a military operation launched in early December and aimed at “exposing” and “thwarting” potential incur-

sions into its territory. The UN peacekeepers said they would continue their technical investigations, describing the recent discoveries as “a matter of serious concern,” requesting “urgent follow-up actions” by the Lebanese authorities. In Beirut, Lebanese Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri said his country is committed to the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement and respect of the Blue Line.Hariri said in a meeting with General Stefano Del Col, the UNIFIL head, that the Lebanese army will conduct patrols to deal “with any flaw in the implementation” of the ceasefire.

Fragile Hodeidah truce takes effect, sporadic fighting reported

since 2014.“Few expected the ceasefire to hold from the beginning - that’s why we’ve seen clashes in the eastern and southern parts for the past four days,” said Al Jazeera’s Mohammed Adow, referring to the fighting and air raids that hit Hodeidah in the days following the agreement in Sweden. “And just moments after the ceasefire came into effect, residents said there was an exchange of gunfire and missiles in the eastern part of the city,” added Adow, who has covered Yemen’s conflict extensively. UN force says Israel-Lebanon border tunnels violate 2006 truce United Nations’ peacekeepers in Lebanon have said two of the four tunnels allegedly discovered by Israel cross the border between the two countries, violating a ceasefire agreement that ended a 2006 war. In a statement on Monday, the UN Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said it “can confirm that two of the tunnels cross the Blue Line”.“These constitute violations of the UN Security Council Resolution 1701,” the peacekeeping force said in a statement, referring to the agreement that ended the 34-day war between Hezbollah and Israel in 2006. 18 health ‘Alarming’ number of families share leftover antibiotics, study suggests Rabi ul Thani 13,1440H December 21, 2018

Dr. Brian Goldman Antibiotic resistance is an ongoing threat to health care’s capacity to fight infections. Doctors who overprescribe those medications are one of the biggest causes. Now, researchers have identified a new culprit — in some cases, you might want to pin the blame on patients. That’s the somewhat surprising conclusion of a new study presented late last week at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) conference and exhibition in Orlando, Fla. In a survey sent anonymously to nearly 500 parents across the United States, parents were asked what they do with leftover antibiotics. Nearly half of the parents surveyed (48.2 per cent) said they’d kept leftover antibiotics rather than dispose of them. The study’s senior author Ruth Milanaik said results show an “alarming” percentage of parents sharing or borrowing antibiotics, a practice called prescription diversion. “This is dangerous not only for those given antibiotics that weren’t prescribed for them, but for entire populations of people who some antibiotics may no longer help when the bacteria they target become resistant to them,” said Dr. Milanaik in the AAP media release.

Unused antibiotics given to others

Of those who kept leftover antibiotics, nearly three quarters (73 per cent) said they gave them to someone for whom the prescription was not intended. The unused antibiotics ended up with a range of recipients. Most often the parents said they gave them to a sibling of the child for whom the antibiotic was intended. In some cases, they gave the leftovers to the child of a friend. Occasionally, they gave the antibiotic to an adult not living in the family’s household. Some parents took the anti

of thing. When leftover antibiotics are given to someone else, there’s a good chance that the dosage is incorrect. Children typically receive liquid antibiotics at a dosage according to their weight. Unless the recipient has the same weight, the dosage will be too little or too much. Unlike the original prescription, there’s no assurance that the leftover amount will be adequate to cover a full course of therapy. If a parent intends to give some of the leftover antibiotics to another child, I’d be concerned that they might top up that amount by deliberately holding back some of the antibiotic intended for the child for whom it was prescribed. Taking antibiotics at a lower than recommended dose, or for a shorter number of days than recommended, is a factor in the development of antibiotic resistance. There are other concerns: 16 per cent of parents surveyed said they gave their child adult medications. That’s a problem since some antibiotics given routinely to adults are contraindicated or not advisable in children. Sometimes, the leftover antibiotic may cause Potential dangers There are several potential harms to this sort a serious interaction with other medications the child is taking. biotic themselves. In some cases, the antibiotic was given away months after it was originally prescribed. Just over 80 per cent of parents said they shared antibiotic suspensions or liquid antibiotics; more than 73 per cent said they shared antibiotic drops, nearly 70 per cent said they shared antibiotic creams, and 55.6 per cent said they shared antibiotic tablets. There are several reasons why parents might be tempted to share antibiotics. One reason is the high cost of prescription drugs. Parents may be hoping to stretch out one prescription over two members of the family. Another is the high cost of health care. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 12.8 per cent of adults ages 18 to 64 are uninsured. Parents who lack coverage may be tempted to diagnose and treat their children. Others may be insured but have to pay expensive co-pays every time they seek medical care for themselves or their children. For single parents, it may be difficult for them to spare time away from work to take their children to the doctor.

So, how should parents handle leftover prescriptions? Pharmacies in Canada take back medications. In some parts of Canada, they organize days in which they encourage Canadians to return unused or leftover prescriptions. In the U.S., authorities recommend flushing unused medication down the toilet, but that practice is discouraged in Canada. Experts discourage the ad hoc sharing of leftover antibiotics and other medications. Still, they like the idea of recycling antibiotics. Hospitals and long-term care facilities in the U.S. routinely donate leftover medications to clinics that serve uninsured Americans. Around 40 states have passed legislation that enables health-care facilities to do this. Sirum.org is a charitable organization in the U.S. that facilitates this. Keep in mind that the Food and Drug Administration does not permit individuals to donate leftover medication. Canada does not have a well-developed system for recycling medication as they have in the U.S. I think it’s something we should consider. Canada mulls over cancelling Saudi arms deal over Khashoggi murder, Yemen Trudeau had earlier said that it would be “extremely difficult” to withdraw from the contract, signed by the previous conservative administration, “without Canadians paying exorbitant penalties.” But as evidence emerged of direct Saudi involvement in Khashoggi’s murder on Oct 2, Canada in late November announced sanctions against 17 Saudi nationals linked to killing. “The murder of a journalist is absolutely unacceptable and that’s why Canada from the

very beginning had been demanding answers and solutions on that,” Trudeau said Sunday in an interview with CTV. “We inherited actually a (Can)$15 billion contract signed by (former prime minister) Stephen Harper to export light-armoured vehicles to Saudi Arabia,” he said. “We are engaged with the export permits to try and see if there is a way of no longer exporting these vehicles to Saudi Arabia,” he added. The penalty for breaking the contract

could exceed Can$1 billion, Trudeau said in an interview with CBC Radio in October. Trudeau has been criticised by political opponents and Human Rights activists for failing to cancel the contract. London, Ontario-based manufacturer General Dynamic Land Systems Canada inked the deal in 2014 to supply 928 LAV 6 armoured personnel carriers to Saudi Arabia. The deal, worth $11.5 billion, was the largest arms deal in Canadian history. Source:dawn.com

‘We don’t need handouts’: Scheer responds to Trudeau’s $1.6-billion boost Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer joined a chorus of truck horns at an Alberta rally with a message for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau: “We don’t need handouts.” Two days after Trudeau announced a boost of $1.6 billion for the province’s struggling energy sector, a pro-pipeline convoy of hundreds of truckers made its way through Nisku, Alta., Wednesday where Scheer spoke at a town hall meeting against Trudeau’s assistance package.“In typical Alberta fashion, the message sent back to Ottawa loud and clear: We don’t need handouts, we just want

to get back to work,” he said to applause. “Give a province $1.6 billion you might feed them for a couple of weeks, but let them build a pipeline to get our energy to market and you can feed them for a generation.” The Liberal’s $4.5 billion purchase of the Trans Mountain pipeline was announced this year, but hit a major snag when the Federal Court of Appeal decided there had not been enough consultation with Indigenous and environmental groups. Alberta is making less per barrel of oil because of a dearth of pipelines that would allow the province to

sell higher priced product to overseas markets. Alberta estimates that it is losing $80 million per day. “We’ve had slumps before,” said Scheer on Wednesday, encouraging the town hall audience and characterizing Trudeau’s government as having “pulled the rug out from under” Albertans. “There are politicians across the country that don’t believe in our energy sector, that don’t want to see it developed or expanded. But conservatives are joining common cause with those across the country that do want to support this sector.”

New Democrat MP Sheila Malcolmson seeks nod in Nanaimo, B.C., by-election

Federal New Democrat MP Sheila Malcolmson says she’s been pondering her jump to provincial politics in British Columbia since the summer when she was approached by officials in Premier John Horgan’s office. The Nanaimo-Ladysmith member of Parliament said Wednesday she has no beef with federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, but wants to run for the B.C. New Democrats to join the provincial government’s initiatives to improve housing and fight climate change. Horgan and current Nanaimo MLA Leonard

Krog joined Malcolmson at a news conference in Nanaimo to announce her plan to seek the nomination in the riding when a byelection is called. Krog, a five-term New Democrat, was elected mayor of Nanaimo last weekend and is expected to resign his seat within weeks, clearing the way for a byelection call in late December or early January.“We’ve been talking all summer and we were waiting until the municipal election result was clear before moving forward to announce my willingness to be the candidate,”

Malcolmson said in an interview after her announcement.“As soon as Leonard indicated his candidacy for mayor … the premier’s office started working about reaching out in finding the best candidate,” she said. “I’m very honoured they chose me.” Malcolmson, the federal NDP’s women’s equality critic, said she told Singh and the caucus members that her jump to B.C. politics involves opportunities to become immediately and directly involved in the government’s housing and climate initiatives...Source: Globle & Mail.ca

STRESS - The Good & The Bad

ational or acute stress can shift into chronic, continual unabated stress. Stress is your guide and can be quite a gift. Try to observe what stresses you . Then try to embrace your stress and be compassionate with yourself. Sometimes clients tend to be so hard on themselves. They keep blaming themselves for everything that’s not being as should be. These individuals often feel victimized and overwhelmed by the stress in their lives. The more we live in denial or running away from our stress, the more insidious ways our stress will discover to get our attention. You can run away from stress for a while but it will eventually find a way to get your attention. It will surface in your psychological or spiritual well-being at first and later affect your physical body. Stress invites you to make new choices in your life and these choices require action. As you learn to deal with the stresses in your life, your incredible potential will unfold, leading you deeper on the path to true happiness. Some immediate effects of stress on your mind and body: - Memory: becomes vague and inexact - Learning: difficulty learning and problem solving Perception: is limited and narrow - Attitude: defensive and aggressive - Mood: negative, want’s to flee Living from the inside out is the only way to overcome stress and truly experience an authentic sense of happiness in your lives!

By: Shabnam Khan -Family Counsellor tress is a natural and essential part of life. Our stress response is designed to protect and preserve our lives. We need a certain amount of stress in our lives but not too much for too long. Our bodies are constantly responding to positive and negative stress. Positive stress motivates and drives us. Often we get excited about working on a new project at work, moving to a new city, changing our careers and so on. Negative stress affects our physical and mental health and can rob us from experiencing true happiness. Every individual has potential and each of us has passions which we have never explored! The main reason that we don’t reach out for our potential in our lives is because of our fears. If you want to experience living an intentional life of true happiness, you can’t run from stress or avoid it. Stress is part of our daily life as breathing, eating and drinking water. Stress is constant in our lives. There is a reason for stress. Stress discovers our dark places and bring them out for attention. Each stress that we perceive as an obstacle is actually an opportunity. You know what consequences there are if you neglect a wound or a sore. It gets worse and can eventually cost you your life! Stress will get worse if you ignore it and don’t respect the gift it is offering you. Denying stress, like denying a wound, can make you worse on spiritual, psychological and physical levels. hristmas is around the corner. Children are eagerly waiting for Santa to fill their holidays with toys and things they want. Play the Roles How Santa plays his role of being kind and giving, we should play the same and better role when needed. When our family and friends need us, we need to be there for them. We should have a big heart and give without any expectations or returns. What About Us?! Why can’t we be happy ourselves as well? Why do we need a season of Holidays for that? As we have many times and read everywhere that happiness is from within, then why is everything outside in our life is hay wire and problematic? Every problem has a solution but that solution may not either occur to us due to us worrying about it or we may not like that solution or we have to give up or lose something we have built or worked hard for. The more we are honest about our thoughts, motives, wants and duties the more our lives become better. We like to live in a glass house and are afraid of stones hitting us. But we believe that we have houses of strong cement and brick but they are not sticking together in unity. Which is why the outside atmosphere affects us. of Allah. The Parents and Elders The parents are in this life our brick that hold us together. They teach good qualities like truthfulness, honesty and hard, sincere work with their own behaviour. In our every day life, when we see our elders living life we observe them, we learn from them and we understand many wisdoms without it being told to us. Action Speaks Louder Than Words Even when children are young they get all impressions of their family atmosphere on their conscious and subconscious mind. Many things they realise later on but they do know many attributes, qualities and rules without spelling them. ing Canada when temperatures start to drop. But it’s a fantastic winter vacation destination. There are world-class ski resorts, beautiful snowy cities, and fun festivals to enjoy across the country. Here are the most affordable places to visit in Canada this winter.

Time your trip to coincide with Winterlude, which the Department of Canadian Heritage established in 1979. Expect snow sculptures, family events, and ice carving competitions. Getting there: All major airlines fly to Ottawa. It’s also located two hours west of Montreal, and four hours northeast of Toronto. There are daily buses from these destinations. Where to stay: Have an unique experience and stay in one of Canada’s most haunted places, the HI Jail Hostel. Here you will sleep in an actual former prison cell.

Québec City

Québec City always has a romantic quality, thanks to European-style architecture and cobblestoned streets. When it’s blanketed in snow, this feeling is only intensified. Fortunately, a winter weekend in Québec City can be affordable. Wander through Old Québec, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the only fortified city north of Mexico. It sparkles at night during the holidays, and is home to Christmas markets and activities. There are also four different ski resorts near Québec City, and it hosts the world’s largest winter festival (aptly named Québec Winter Carnival). Getting there: Most major North American airlines fly direct to Québec City. Where to stay: Royal William Hotel is a good budget hotel option, within walking distance to the city’s main attractions. Pakistanis and Indians come together to celebrate the opening of Kartarpur corridor in Canada

The Pakistani and Indian Diaspora came together in Surrey to celebrate the opening of the Kartarpur corridor, which will provide Sikhs access to their historical gurdwara across the international border. The founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak, spent the final years of his life in Kartarpur, located close to the now fenced Indo-Pak border in Pakistan. On the 550th birth anniversary of Nanak next year, the Pakistan government is going to allow Sikh pilgrims to travel without visa through the corridor to visit at the Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara.

Recently, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan announced that his government is willing to open the corridor. On Tuesday, December 18 the Pakistani Canadian Cultural Association (PCCA) organized an event in Surrey, where the Indian Punjabi Sikhs presented a letter of thanks to the Pakistani government through its Consul in Vancouver, Fahad Amjad. The letter was given to Amjad by the team of Punjabi Business Association of Canada led by Jaspinder Brar. The occasion was the celebration of the birth anniversary of the father of the Pakistani nation, Muhammad

Ali Jinnah. Later, the organizers did a cake cutting to celebrate both the birthday of Jinnah and the opening of Kartarpur Sahib Corridor. A video presentation on the corridor plan was also screened at the event attended by elected officials from Surrey. Among those who spoke on the occasion was BC Minister for Labour Harry Bains, who was joined on the dais by his party colleagues and NDP MLAs Jagrup Brar and Rachna Singh. Others who spoke were Liberal MP Randeep Singh Sarai, BC Liberal MLA Marvin Hunt and Conservative Party candidate Shinder Purewal.

Former BC Minister and a leading Liberal, Dr. Gulzar Cheema, who hails from Gurdaspur which is close to Kartarpur Sahib, gave background information on the campaign by Sikhs for open access to the shrines separated due to partition. Prominent progressive businessman Baldev Bath also spoke on the occasion. Others who addressed the gathering included PCCA officials Naveed Waraich, Farukh Sayed, Farooq Rai and a young Punjabi poet, Irvin Singh, who recited a poem dedicated to the opening of the corridor. angladesh), officially the People's Republic of Bangladesh is a country in South Asia. It is bordered by India on all sides except for a small border with Burma (Myanmar) to the far southeast and by the Bay of Bengal to the south. Together with the Indian state of West Bengal, it makes up the ethno-linguistic region of Bengal. The name Bangladesh means "Country of Bengal" in the official Bengali language. The borders of present-day Bangladesh were established with the partition of Bengal and India in 1947, when the region became the eastern wing of the newly formed Pakistan. However, it was separated from the western wing by 1,600 km (994 mi) across India. After independence the new state endured famines, natural disasters and widespread poverty, as well as political turmoil and military coups. The restoration of democracy in 1991 has been followed by relative calm and economic progress. Bangladesh is the seventh most populous country and is among the most densely populated countries in the world with a high poverty rate. However, per-capita (inflation-adjusted) The country is listed among the "Next Eleven" economies. Dhaka, the capital, and other urban centers have been the driving force behind this growth. Geographically, the country straddles the fertile Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta and is subject to annual

monsoon floods and cyclones. The government is a parliamentary democracy. Bangladesh is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, the OIC, SAARC, BIMSTEC, and the D-8. As the World Bank notes in its July 2005 Country Brief, the country has made significant progress in human development in the areas of literacy, gender parity in schooling and reduction of population growth. However, Bangladesh continues to face a number of major challenges, including widespread political and bureaucratic corruption, economic competition relative to the world and an increasing danger of hydrologic shocks brought on by ecological vulnerability to climate change. Exports of textiles, As the demand for ready made garments increases rapidly across the global market, Bangladesh’s position as the world’s second largest readymade garment exporter continues to hold strong. Bangladesh sets export target at $44 billion for FY19

The Bangladesh government has set the export target at $44 billion for FY19, amounting to a 6.47% growth target in export earnings for the current fiscal year. Of the total, $39 billion is expected to come from the export of goods, and $5 billion from services. In FY18, the export target was set at $41 billion. Source: Wikipedia & dhakatribune.
