N what is being described as the most tangible step forward in the Afghan peace talks, US officials and the Afghan Taliban seem to have come close to a deal on a draft framework that could bring to an end America’s longest war. Although there are still major obstacles in the way, sustained negotiations between the two sides have paved the path to a final agreement on the withdrawal of American forces from Afghanistan. Significantly, the breakthrough came after the talks had hit a frustrating stalemate earlier, with the Taliban threatening to pull out from the negotiations entirely, leading to a toughening of the US tone. Zalmay Khalilzad, the chief American negotiator, had even indicated that the US would increase military pressure in order to force the Taliban to return to the negotiating table. It all happened after a meeting between US and Taliban representatives late last year in Abu Dhabi, and attended by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, ended on a positive note. However, the Taliban’s refusal to meet representatives of the Kabul government who were present in the city clouded the outcome and the mood. Some reports suggested that Khalilzad had received guarantees from Saudi Arabia that the Taliban would enter into direct talks with the Kabul government. But at the last moment, the Taliban backed out of their promise and reinforced reservations among various Afghan factions that the peace process would go nowhere without the Taliban showing some flexibility. The Taliban turndown particularly infuriated Afghan President Ashraf Ghani who had sent his national security adviser, Hamdullah Mo-

hib, to the UAE. Will the Taliban agree to a ceasefire and sit across the table with the Kabul government? Yet another setback to the fragile negotiating process came when the Taliban rejected a January meeting expected to take place in Saudi Arabia. The Taliban officials said there was no decision taken on the location. At the core of the Taliban refusal was a long-held suspicion of US motivations. The Taliban accused the US of duplicity and of reneging on the agreement reached in previous meetings. A major point of contention stalling the talks was the insistence of the Taliban that the US should stick to what it claims was the ‘agreed agenda’ of discussing the withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan and preventing Afghan soil from being used against other states. The Americans have now backed out and are unilaterally adding new subjects. The ice was finally broken after hectic behindthe-scene diplomatic efforts, with Islamabad reportedly playing a major role in persuading the Taliban to return to the table. Initially, the meeting between the Taliban and US officials was to take place in Islamabad, but the media report leaking the news led to the venue being shifted to Doha. The talks that continued for six days finally produced remarkable results it would seem, with both sides apparently showing flexibility. A change in the Taliban negotiating team may have also contributed to the breakthrough. In the midst of the marathon Doha negotiations, the Taliban appointed Mullah Baradar Akhund, a deputy of Mullah Omar and co-founder of the Islamist militia as the chief negotiator. Mullah Baradar who
had been held by Pakistani authorities for more than a decade was released only months ago; he remains one of the most powerful and respected insurgent leaders, despite having been in custody for so long. He has also been elevated to second position in the Taliban hierarchy. His appointment manifested the seriousness the Taliban assign to the peace negotiations. Another factor behind Mullah Baradar’s elevation is believed to be the respect he commands with and his influence over Taliban field commanders whose support would be critical to any peace agreement. His heading the team has certainly given greater authority to the Taliban negotiators. Now it all depends on the Taliban agreeing to a ceasefire and sitting across the table with the Kabul government. The persistent Taliban refusal to negotiate with representatives from Ashraf Ghani’s government has so far remained a major stumbling block in taking the peace process forward. But there appears to be a strong possibility of the insurgents agreeing to an intra-Afghan dialogue after a framework deal. A ceasefire could follow the talks. But there is still a long way to go before a comprehensive agreement among all stakeholders can be reached. Exiting Afghanistan, however, remains the biggest foreign policy challenge for Washington. Although it has been an unwinnable war, America’s departure may not be that easy. Complete withdrawal may have its own complications. The 17-year-long war has left the country more divided. With their battlefield victories and expanding territorial control, the insurgents have certainly gained the up-
per hand as the Afghan endgame comes closer. The recent large-scale attacks, launched by the Taliban, targeting Afghan military personnel and installations have given the insurgents a further boost. There is no indication of them holding back their guns until the Americans agree to a time frame for complete troop withdrawal. In fact, there could be an escalation in the Taliban’s military offensive in spring. It will be a fight-fight and talk-talk situation. America’s desperation to pull out is itself seen as a victory for the Taliban who have gained greater international recognition over the years. That has also fuelled apprehension among other Afghan groups inside and outside the government. A major challenge for Khalilzad would be to take all those groups on board. President Ashraf Ghani’s speech in Davos is indicative of the gap that exists between America’s exit plan and the Kabul government’s concerns. There is increasing apprehension that the withdrawal of the American forces could further empower the Taliban and plunge Afghanistan into another round of civil war. These concerns are valid and any peace deal with the Taliban must address those fears. Then there is also a need for a regional agreement guaranteeing non-interference in Afghan istan. The involvement of regional countries has fuelled civil wars in Afghanistan. Though there has been a significant breakthrough, it is not going to be a smooth path to peace in Afghanistan. ‘Abaya to Miniskirt’& from Miniskirt to Abaya’.
By: Gulshan Alani It is most pleasing to know that an 18 yr old Saudi young and naïve girl Rahaf al-Qunun, arrived safely in Canada and not stuck in Thailand. Looking very happy in Mini Skirt, showing proudly her achievement of desired ‘freedom’ of showing her legs, proving her success: but at the same time many believe that with support of staged jubilant faced CFM Christia Freeland, looks like Oil in the fire. to her distraught family, Saudi Gov. and Muslims world wide. It seems her real reasons for leaving Islam for all her anti-Islamic un-ethical desires will be fulfilled easily. Unless, she educates herself about the true meaning of ‘Divine Religion’ that is full of Health Science of Physical and Spiritual safety. Hopefully, she will realize disrespect of Parents and Creator-GOD is a sin. Including Child abuse by Parents or the authority is forbidden and a sin. Though, Allah-Creator-GOD forgives again
and again. It is easy to disobey the Divine Law, but not the law of the land. It is utmost necessity to be obedient and respectful of the Rule of Law. Rejection or disobedient of one rule will be punished right away. So she needs to abide by rule of law and live with dignity. Whereas, GOD’s law indicates: There is no compulsion in religion”. Forceful conversion to Islam religion is forbidden, except the rules of social code of descent life style with dignity, ethics, and moral values, must be maintained. Ethical deviation in any religion or community is forbidden. Hopefully, seeing other young Canadian respectful Muslim girls (and boys) practicing higher values of ethics and moral values, wearing the holy attire- uniform, InshaaAllah she too will come to her senses and change. Just like we the converts changed from our rebelliousness to Divine Religion Islam and our Creator GOD. Coming from non-Muslim country East Africa British Colony where we had no idea about Islam, but our Indian culture had the richest highest ethics and moral values, due to the most restricted living rules as way of life, probably more strict than Islam’s. Most amazingly, we never thought of restrictions as oppression and never even thought of complaining as we were happy with our way of ‘Clean Life’ and safety net around us and would never even dream of leaving our parents
for anything.. After coming to Canada we discovered Islam that is intertwined with Christianity and Judaism and we converted to Islam. It was from ‘Mini Skirt to Abaya’. As some of us studied in the Western country in our naïve age got influenced and adopted the new trend of modern ways- Mini Skirt, but temporarily as returning back home back to our own cultural ways, without any arguments. We stayed obedient to our Parents as our respect and love for them overpowered all the other freedom of the world. It is most mindboggling why U. N. played favoritism and right away heard the cry of Saudi girl and ran to help her and ordered Canada to give her asylum, it was taken as an order from God.. Whereas, hundreds of children are locked in the U. S. cage, thousand of Rohingya refugees are going through hell, suffering of the Indigenous, their Children are still being snatched away from Mothers, but are ignored. Hope U. N. sends another order to change their condition.

Missing persons cases to be tried in civil courts
ISLAMABAD: The government took a landmark decision on Tuesday under which those involved in kidnapping citizens will be tried under the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). The decision was made by Prime Minister Imran Khan in a meeting on human rights at the PM Office (PMO). A press release issued by the PMO said the government had decided to amend the PPC in order to criminalise any attempt by an individual or organisation to make someone disappear by force.“After the decision, those involved in abducting citizens will be tried in civil courts,” Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry told media after the meeting. The issue of missing persons and enforced disappearance had been a challenging task for previous governments as the list of missing persons continued to swell. People living in conflict-ridden tribal areas, Balochistan and Karachi have been complaining about enforced disappearances. The Pakistan Peoples Party has taken a firm
stand on the issue and raised it time and again. It is believed that missing persons have been picked by intelligence agencies and, thus, they have not been allowed to defend themselves in a court of law. On July 12 last year the Islamabad High Court (IHC) defined the concept of enforced disappearance and declared that individuals involved in abducting and detaining citizens at unknown locations might be charged under the Anti-Terrorism Act. The 47-page judgement, authored by Justice Athar Minallah (now chief justice of the IHC) in the case of a missing IT expert who was kidnapped from his home in F-10, Islamabad, introduced strict consequences for officials involved in enforced disappearances. The IHC also ruled that certain government functionaries were responsible for the criminal justice system’s failure to recover Mr Mehmood and fined them. It expressed displeasure with intelligence agencies – the Inter-Services Intelligence, Military Intelligence and Intelligence Bureau – and directed the federal government to bear monthly expenses of the missing individual’s family. According to the Missing Persons Commission, it has disposed of 3,492 out of 5,608 cases up to Nov 30. The commission received 5,507 cases up to Oct 31 and 111 more up to November last year. KHAIRPUR: Pakistan Peoples Party chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has warned against any attempt to roll back the 18th Amendment and said he is ready to launch a struggle, even a long march, to foil such attempts. He was talking to journalists after jointly inaugurating the Gambat Medical College with Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah on Tuesday. Mr Bhutto-Zardari said the Sindh government had upgraded health facilities like the National Institute of Cardio-
Vascular Diseases and the National Institute of Child Health and, as a result, heart surgeries were being conducted free of cost in the province. Earlier, when these organisations were under the control of the federal government, they were run on donations. He said some forces wanted to abolish the 18th Amendment so that they could snatch control of different institutions from the provinces, but the PPP would not let them do it. He said that the party would also adopt a legal course to retain control of the hospitals. Asked about the perceived attempts to introduce a presidential system in the country, the PPP leader said he had warned during his election campaign that some people wanted to bring in a dummy government to abolish the 18th Amendment and other provisions of the Constitution so that a presidential system could be introduced in the country. “These people have not learnt a lesson from the past,” he said. He said that the only suitable system for Pakistan was the parliamentary system because the country comprised people speaking different languages and their representation could only be ensured in a parliamentary system. PM Khan orders arrangements for Torkham border to remain open ‘round the clock’
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday said he has tasked officials to make arrangements so that the Torkham border crossing to Afghanistan can remain open 24 hours a day. He said he wants to see a plan finalised and implemented within the next six months. In a tweet, the premier said the functioning of the border crossing “round the clock” would be “instrumental in boosting bilateral trade [and] enhancing people to people contacts between the two brotherly countries”. Khan’s post followed an announcement by KP Finance Minister Taimur Saleem Khan Jhagra, who revealed earlier in the
day that the federal and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governments had decided to expedite the reopening of the Torkham border crossing. A day after Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor said that work on a 900-kilometre-long portion of fence along the Pak-Afghan border has been completed, the KP minister announced “two key decisions” regarding the Torkham border. ”In a joint meeting with the federal government, two key decisions [were taken],” Jhagra tweeted. “First, to open Torkham border 7 days a week asap, and second, to cre-
ate a task force to open the border 24-7 within 6-12 months.” The development, the minister said, is “very positive news for the Pakhtunkhwa and Khyber district economies”. A day earlier, the DG ISPR had given an update to journalists and anchorpersons regarding the fencing work along the Pak-Afghan border. Maj Gen Ghafoor said that the fence had helped check the movement of terrorists from across the border and the situation would further improve after the completion of the project next year. In 2018, bilateral trade with Afghanistan via the Torkham border crossing
had gained momentum, albeit at a slow pace, as the government decided to ease certain restrictions it had imposed on export and import to and from Afghanistan since 2016. In November, however, trade at the border was suspended for several days after customs clearing agents and transporters went on a strike citing a lack of facilities.
Complainant of Sahiwal case refuses to appear before JIT LAHORE: A family of Sahiwal incident victims on Wednesday refused to appear before the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) that was scheduled to hold identification parade of suspects as part of its probe into the killing of four people. Citing sources, Geo News reported that JIT members along with local magistrate arrived at the local jail where they waited for Jalil, brother of Khalil , and other witnesses but they didn’t show up. The TV channel reported that Jalil while talking by telephone said “We will not appear before the JIT” Jalil said he had
presented his demands and recommendations which also include formation of judicial commission before the Senate’s Standing Committee .He said the committee has also called for setting up a judicial commission.“ We will appear once the commission is formed,” he was quoted by the TV channel as saying. On the other hand, the civil judge has fixed Thursday for identification parade of suspects involved in shooting of the four people. The four people were shot dead by personnel of Punjab’s Counter Terrorism Department.
The incident
On January 19, the CTD claimed in a statement that they signalled a Suzuki Alto car and a motorcycle to stop near Sahiwal Toll Plaza on GT Road, but they did not pull over and instead opened fire on the police. The CTD officials retaliated and four people, including two women, were killed by the “firing of their own accomplices” in the ensuing firefight, according to the CTD. Source: tribune.com.pk

Venezuela in crisis: All the latest updates A look at the 8 alleged victims of Latest updates as Venezuela plunges into a major crisis amid a growing row over Nicolas Maduro’s presidency. Venezuela has plunged into a major political crisis amid a growing row over President Nicolas Maduro’s future as the country’s leader. Maduro started a second term on January 10 following a widely-boycotted election last year that many foreign governments refused to recognise. On Wednesday, Juan Guaido, the leader of the opposition-controlled National Assembly, declared himself interim president. Shortly after Guaido took an oath swearing himself in before his supporters, US President Donald Trump publicly recognised him as the country’s leader. In response, Maduro broke off diplomatic ties with the United States and gave the American diplomats in the country 72 hours to leave. Maduro accused Guaido of staging a coup and ordered his arrest.

Several events being held to commemorate Quebec City mosque shooting
Two years ago tonight, six people tragically lost their lives, in which Azzeddine Soufiane, Khaled Belkacemi, Ibrahima Barry, Mamadou Tanou Barry, Abdelkrim Hassane, Aoubaker Thabti. included and nineteen more were seriously injured in a horrific attacked on the Islamic Cultural Centre in
Ste-Foy, Quebec. On Jan 29, 2019. at Parliament Hill Ottawa MP Surrey-Central Randeep Sarai among others remembered those Six dead, several wounded in ‘terrorist attack’ at Quebec City mosque. Their families and friends were present. He said our thoughts and prayers remain with the victims and their families. We will continue to stand up against Islamaphobia and all forms of discrimination and hatred.
As reports uncover what Toronto police knew but didn’t tell the public regarding alleged serial killer Bruce McArthur, here is a look at the eight victims whose lives were cut short. McArthur, a self-employed landscaper, was arrested in January and eventually charged with the murders of eight men linked to the city’s gay community -- the earliest of which took place in 2010. None of the charges against him have been proven in court. Kayhan was one of the missing men whose disappearances were investigated under Project Houston, which ran from November 2012 to April 2014. He was reported missing in October 2012. His family had told investigators that they were thankful to have closure when his remains were found in July 2017. He was a landscaper who had worked with McArthur and went missing in September 2010. He was described by friends as a fixture in the LGBTQ community. He was last seen leaving Zipperz, a now-defunct nightclub in Toronto’s gay village. Faizi, a frequent patron at the Black Eagle, a popular bar in the village, was last seen in the community in 2010. His family had reported him missing to Peel Regional Police on Dec. 29, 2010. His vehicle was actually parked near the home of one of McArthur’s landscaping clients. He was well-known in the village and
would stick up for fellow sex workers in the area. He was likely killed between May 2016 and July 2017. Police say he was either 43 or 44, had no fixed address and was never reported as missing. Kanagaratnam was a Sri Lankan immigrant, who was believed to have gone into hiding after his refugee claim was rejected. His family had last heard from him in August 2015. He was reported missing in 2015 by his family in east Toronto. But police haven’t said whether the Scarborough man had any relationship with McArthur. His disappearance helped formed the basis of a police investigation called Project Prism which was launched in August. Kinsman was reported missing from the gay village in late June 2017. Police have said he had a sexual relationship with McArthur. Kinsman’s sisters said they searched for their brother for six months before police eventually charged McArthur in his death. Karen Coles said he was “well-known in his community” and “loved by all.” His disappearance in 2017 served as a tipping point that finally led Toronto police to focus investigative efforts on McArthur. He had come to Canada from Turkey around 2013 and didn’t have any family in Canada. He had vanished from the gay village on April 14, 2017. Five months later, police charged McArthur with Esen’s presumed death. The Canadian Press
UNHCR ‘deeply concerned’ over settler attack on Palestinians Killing of Palestinian man comes as settler Aid group warns Yemen truce ‘on verge of collapsing’ A humanitarian group has warned that a ceasefire agreed in Yemen’s key port city of Hodeidah is on the verge of collapsing, as a retired Dutch general in charge of the truce stepped down from his role. The US-based International Rescue Committee said on Tuesday that recent clashes in the city between Houthi rebels who control it and pro-government forces backed by a Saudi-led coalition have increased dramatically since last week. “In recent days, with clashes erupting inside Hodeidah and both parties accusing each other of violations, the agreement is increasingly in peril,” Frank McManus of the group said. Martin Griffith on Monday said that the expected timeline for the truce and the prisoner swap has been pushed back. ’Doubts from the very beginning’ Griffiths hosted the hard-won peace talks between the Yemeni government and Houthi
rebels in Sweden last month. The two parties, who have been at war for four years, agreed at the talks to a mass prisoner swap and an ambitious ceasefire pact in Hodeidah, the Red Sea city home to the impoverished country’s most valuable port. The UN Security Council this month unanimously adopted Resolution 2452, which calls for the deployment of up to 75 monitors to oversee the fragile ceasefire and pullback of forces from Hodeidah.Source: aljazeera.com
violence in occupied West Bank surges to highest levels since 2015. The UN has said it is “deeply concerned about the protracted and extremely violent attack” on Palestinians in the village of alMugheir in the occupied West Bank. Hamdi Naasan, 38-year-old father of four, succumbed to his wounds on Saturday after Israeli settlers from the nearby illegal outpost of Adei Ad shot at the Palestinian villagers. Rupert Colville, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, issued a statement on Tuesday, where he said a group of up to 30 Israelis - some of them armed - attacked Palestinian farmers in their fields and then descended on the village where they used live ammunition to shoot at the villagers and their houses. Six Palestinians were shot and wounded with three of them in a serious condition. It remains unclear whether any settlers were also injured. Colville noted that Israeli security forces were stationed near the village and were immediately alerted to the attack, but witnesses said that it took around two hours for them to intervene. “When Israeli security forces did finally in-
tervene, the main focus of their action appears to have been to disperse the Palestinian villagers using teargas,” the statement read. Three more Palestinians were injured by live ammunition after Israeli security forces intervened. However, it was not clear whether they were shot by settlers or soldiers. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the average number of violent incidents instigated by settlers every month increased by 57 percent in 2018 compared to 2017, and by 175 percent compared to 2016. “Israel, as the occupying power, is obliged under international humanitarian law to protect the Palestinian population from such attacks. Those responsible for settler violence must be brought to account,” said Colville. Source: aljazeera.com

Harper opines on Trump win, extols Trudeau says it’s worth ‘pointing out’ ‘populist conservatism’ in new video similarities between Scheer and Harper
OTTAWA – Former Conservative prime minister Stephen Harper is offering a new warning about the dynamic of “elites” versus “populists” that he says led to U.S. President Donald Trump’s election, playing out across the Western world. He then suggests that “populist conservatism” is the solution. In a new video posted online on Monday titled “Why Trump Won,” Harper defends Trump voters as “not the ignorant and misguided deplorable depicted in mainstream media, they are our family, friends, and neighbours.” Harper starts by introducing himself as a seven-time elected Canadian
MP and three-time prime minister. He says that he didn’t expect U.S. President Donald Trump to be elected, but he did think it was possible because he had sensed the political landscape shifting thanks to globalization. The former prime minister published a book in 2018 called “Right Here, Right Now” about populism and politics that discusses, in more depth, the concept he proposes in the video. ”Many Americans voted for Donald Trump because the global economy has not been working for them,” Harper says in the video. “We can pretend that this is a false perception. We can keep trying to convince people that they misunderstand their own lives, or we can try to understand what they are saying and offer some solutions.” He then posits that the way to serve these “ordinary people” is through “populist conservatism,” that’s grounded in “tried and true conservative values.” The four issues Harper says conservatives should focus on are: Market economics; Trade;, Globalization; and, Immigration. Harper said populist conservatives should be supportive of all these issues, but notes that, for example, Source: ctvnews.ca
NDP minority survives high-stakes Nanaimo byelection with Malcolmson win
CTV News has declared New Democrat Sheila Malcolmson the winner of a highstakes provincial byelection in Nanaimo, B.C., potentially sparing her party’s fragile minority government from an early election. With 90 of 111 polls reporting, Malcolmson had some 8,800 votes--about half of the votes counted and about 1,500 more than Liberal rival Tony Harris. Green candidate Michele Ney had 1,317 votes at that time. ”Our positive message, the
OTTAWA -- Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Andrew Scheer’s Conservative party is in the exact same place it was under Stephen Harper’s leadership and that’s why he and his Liberals will continue “pointing out” the similarities. The Liberal party put the Harper stamp on Scheer the day he was elected leader of the Conservative party, billing him as a far-right social conservative. The Liberals raise Harper frequently and drop his name in fundraising emails to supporters. “We are focused on what is truly important while Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives are stepping up the same divisive and negative politics we saw from Stephen Harper,” wrote Liberal party president Suzanne Cowan in an email blast sent this week. In an interview, Trudeau told The Canadian Press that the Conservative party’s approach to a range of issues shows that it does not have plans or ideas that differ from Harper’s. “Canadians so clearly rejected Stephen Harper’s approach to government, the approach in the 2015 election, and yet on climate, on the economy, on international engagement, on migration issues, on Indigenous issues, they are very much still in the exact same mode that they were pre the 2015 election.”“I think that’s sort of something that is worthwhile pointing out to Canadians,” said Trudeau. In almost the same breath Trudeau said that in the next election he’s not going to try to “vilify” or “demonize” his opponents. But he suggested that he doesn’t view his comparison of Scheer to Harper as vilifying him. Trudeau said when he was emphasizing his “sunny ways” during the last campaign, people were quick to point out any time he said something critical of Harper. But, he said, he’s going to be very sharp any time there are clear distinctions of policy between him and Scheer, or when he thinks Conservatives are trying to divide the country. ”I will make no apologies for being very passionate, sometimes overly enthusiastic, in the way I engage in robust debate but I am as much as possible going to keep it on a substantive level.”
work that’s been done to already lift people up in just a year and half—we’re so encouraged to be able to keep that work on and it would not have happened without you,” Malcolmson said at the NDP’s headquarters, thanking her supporters and staff as well as the other candidates who ran in the byelection. The MLA-elect reiterated some of the party’s campaign priorities, including building affordable housing and improving child care. “We’ve got a lot of work left to do,” she said. “We are going to work together to tackle the issues that we face. I am so honoured to have served with Leonard Krog as MLA. I’m so honoured to carry his work on.” With Malcolmson as the new MLA for Nanaimo, the NDP and Greens will have a combined 44 seats over the Liberals’ 42, bolstering the government’s hold on the legislature. The suspect, a 61-year-old retiree of Chinese descent, was arrested on Friday after allegedly trying to transfer the money from the firm’s bank account using bogus documents, public broadcaster Teledifusao de Macau (TDM) and the Chinese-language Macau Daily quoted police as saying. Authorities did not identify the company or the bank involved. The arrest comes as Beijing and Ottawa are locked in a diplomatic row following the December arrest in Canada of Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou on a US extradition request linked to Iran sanctions violations. In a move observers see as retaliation over the Meng case, Chinese authorities detained two Canadians soon after, accusing them of activities that “endanger armed near Scott Road SkyTrain station. He also said Scheer himself has not been able to articulate his differences from his predecessor. He pointed to an Assembly of First Nations meeting earlier this year where a chief directly asked Scheer how he’s different from Harper and Scheer asked for “a little bit of patience for when our platform gets released.” Brock Harrison, a spokesman for Scheer, said if anyone is stuck in 2015, it’s Trudeau.“He wants to re-fight the 2015 campaign because virtually everything he and his government have done since then has been a failure,” said Harrison, adding that Trudeau will have to explain why he’s “failed to balance the budget, secure the border, build pipelines, and provide relief for Canadian families.” Conservative MP Pierre Poilievre made similar comments in an interview recently, suggesting Trudeau points to Harper to deflect from his faults and because he’s feeling nervous about his chief opponent. “You know the fact that he keeps trying to change the channel from Scheer is probably a good indication that he’s afraid of running against Scheer,” he said. Poilievre said Trudeau uses the strategy to avoid taking responsibility for his own “failures,” and that whenever he’s asked about something he quickly deflects.“It doesn’t have to be Stephen Harper, it can be anyone. But it’s the No. 1 rhetorical technique he employs -- to quickly change the subject to another human being as soon as he is caught in trouble or failing. So we expect more of that, it’s actually a common tactic among privileged trust-fund babies.” Source: ctvnews.ca

Transit officer shot in Surrey, hunt is on for armed suspect
Police warn public to stay away from area of Scott Road SkyTrain Station Police are on the hunt for an armed suspect after a transit officer was shot at Scott Road SkyTrain station this afternoon. Surrey RCMP say the officer received serious but not life-threatening injuries and has been taken to hospital. The Now-Leader has learned the officer’s name is Josh Harms and that he was shot on the SkyTrain platform twice in the arm. A report from one resident says a SWAT team has surrounded a house near Scott Road station and a loud explosion was heard but the Now-Leader has not confirmed that. In a release, RCMP say they received 911 calls about a shooting at about 4:20 p.m. Police say at the same time, they were alerted by Metro Vancouver Transit Police that one of their officers had been shot at the Scott Road Skytrain station platform. Police say they are working with the Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team and the Integrated Police Dog Services to find a suspect who may be
in Hong Kong,” police spokesperson Leng Kam Lun told local reporters on Saturday, according to TDM. But the bank “discovered that the signature on the transfer slip was a bit different from the one linked to the bank account”, Leng said, adding that the suspect immediately left the bank after his request was denied. The man was arrested at the border trying to leave Macau on Friday evening. The bank contacted police after it called the company, which denied knowledge of the transfer, according to the Macao Daily, which gave the suspect’s surname as Leao. Canadian officials at the Hong Kong consulate, which oversees Macau, did not respond to requests for comment. Commitment with Understanding
By: Siraj Islam Mufti here is a great deal of gloom and despondency among Muslims. This, despite the fact that we have a tremendous human potential of some 1.3 billion, and are leading the world in growth especially in productive youngsters. We are also blessed with an abundance of natural resources such as petroleum and natural gas, while inhabiting the most strategic areas of the globe. Place these factors in the context of Islam’s uniquely transcendental message, alongside the testimonials of a glorious historic past, and you have all the ingredients for a respectable place in the comity of nations. Given this, especially in the post-colonial era, we should have taken off on sound footing, building a grand society on our traditional Islamic principles of justice, freedom, peace and prosperity. Yet we did not. And our masses are among the world’s poor, hungry, and illiterate. With over a 60 percent illiteracy rate, our people are held backwards and have few avenues of gainful productivity. As a result, nearly 40 percent live below the poverty line (less than $2.00 a day). And while our masses continue to suffer, corrupt autocratic dictators plunder our resources and loot the public treasury. And when they finally leave thrones of power, billions are taken with them to be stashed in foreign banks. These dictators have perfected the tools of corruption through deceit and nepotism; silencing and terrorizing the masses through coercion, detention and murder, maintaining their status quo by subservience to foreign masters, attending to their interests, rather than the interests of their own people. In addition, the current havoc wrought on Muslim lands amply demonstrates that it is past time that our masses and genuine leadership take affairs in their own hands; they can no longer afford to leave them to autocratic rulers or their cliques and protgs, and the circumstances that necessarily result. Each and every one of us has to be earnestly committed and involved in all our affairs. First and foremost, we must acquire knowledge. Indeed, the era of inquiry, inquisition and application started with the first word of Iqra revealed to the Prophet , and he
made it incumbent on every Muslim, male and female, to acquire it from the cradle to the grave. This mandate created a great civilization unparalleled in the history of humankind. Unfortunately, this enlightened culture weakened because this noble tradition of scholarship was neglected by rulers of the day, only to be subsequently followed by subjugation by colonialists. And the failed states of the Muslim world today pay no heed to this tradition. Public education and accessibility to knowledge must now constitute our primary concern since there is no lack of talent among Muslims within and without Muslim countries. And in this age of the Internet, with the free flow of information, one less barrier is breached. Essential is organization by dedicated individuals at the local level. And each and every one of us should be involved in one form or another, in attending or promoting it. Those with means should loosen their purses wide open, for that is best that can be done to uplift their people, while ensuring rewards with the Creator in the Hereafter. However, it is important for those involved in this endeavor that the information imparted be relevant to our crucial understanding of Islam, offering Islamic solutions to the exigencies of our times, while adopting modern means for their usefulness. Muslims in the West, while promoting Islamic understanding among them, must develop necessary institutions, and simultaneously play their due role in this effort in Muslim countries. American Muslims, in particular, coming from almost every nation, are in a unique position, represent-

ing a microcosm of the Ummah, who can offer solutions for the Ummah’s problems as they gather together their large pool of talent and advanced educational resources. American Muslims should develop requisite institutions in the U.S., as well as get involved in collaborative efforts in Muslim countries. Among the primary institutions to be established and strengthened are those that serve as rights and civil liberties watchdogs; preserve and protect public funds against misappropriation and corruption; maximize public scrutiny and debate; and work for the unity and solidarity of the Ummah. We must utilize the above means as committed Muslims. It means that we are committed to Allah, our Lord and Creator, put our trust in Him, and know that success will come if we are true believers - that we are conscious of our accountability and answerability to Him for all our actions. Our approach must be in conformity with the maxim - “seeking the good of this world and the good of the Hereafter.” This commitment necessarily entails that we root out any and all selfishness, and work hard for the collective good of the community, the Ummah, and humanity at large. Unfortunately, while we are good at concentrating on our individual salvation, we waste much time on issues that are peripheral and not of much significance to our collective existence which is at stake. Differences in seeing issues from different perspectives are a healthy sign, but only to the extent that they are not exaggerated to become detrimental to the community. Thus, while welcoming differences in views and ideas and encouraging diversity for the greater good, any sectarianism, dis-
cord and conflict must be shunned, and all of our issues resolved through discussion, amicably. Islam places its utmost emphasis on the unity of Ummah, second only to the submission to Allah; and condemns in the strongest terms any willful attempt that causes splitting of the Ummah. Pursuing the above, Muslims must also be committed human beings, because Islam ascribes nothing more than a sublimation of human values. All it seeks is the good for humanity, in Toto, so we should embrace good wherever it is, irrespective of whence it emanates. This role is in accord with the Quranic message, for example, “You are the best Ummah evolved for humankind; you enjoin what is good and check what is wrong and evil for humankind while having faith in Allah” (Quran, 3:110). Its other characteristic is Ummatan Wastan, a median or balanced community given the responsibility of exemplifying as “witnesses (to the truth) before humankind” (Quran, 2:143). The greatness of Islamic Ummah is contingent upon carrying out this great role for humankind that it is assigned. Therefore, Muslims must form alliances and coalitions worldwide, especially in the West, with likeminded people and organizations that stand for causes in common between them. Muslims cannot remain on the sidelines of this movement or only get earnestly involved with a holistic, transcendental vision taking the lead and guiding role. This is because Islam, literally and purposely, is peace, and takes an unreserved stand for justice humankind as a whole. The Quranic injunctions are clear; such as, “Allah commands you to render back your trusts to those to whom they are due; And when you judge between humankind, that you judge with justice: Verily how excellent is the teaching, which He gives you! For Allah is He who hears and sees all things” (Quran, 5:58). Then, further on in the same chapter, it instructs, “O You who believe! Stand firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allah, even as against yourselves, or your parents, or your kin, and whether it is (against) rich or poor; for Allah can best protect both. Follow not the lusts (of your heart), lest you swerve, and if you distort (justice) or decline to do justice, verily Allah is wellacquainted with all that you do” (Quran, 4:135). Officials say this law is about Construction underway for 240 new residential online safety. Experts say it’s a Trocare-beds for seniors in Burnaby jan horse for internet censorship
By James Griffiths, CNN (CNN)The men passed the link between them, sharing it over email and instant messages. It was to a public Dropbox folder, containing hundreds of nude and intimate images of women, mostly students at the Fiji campus of the University of the South Pacific. News of the folder’s existence was broken by the Fiji Sun, which later carried an interview with a victim in which she spoke of being harassed on both social media and offline over photos taken with an ex-boyfriend. She had considered suicide. More coverage followed, sparking what the Sun described as a “nationwide debate on cyber laws.” Government ministers called for swift action to protect Fijians online -- and Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum delivered, introducing the Online Safety Bill to Parliament and calling for its passage to be fast-tracked. In May 2018, after an unusually short twomonth public consultation, the bill was passed into law, becoming the Online Safety Act 2018. Only government lawmakers voted in favor of the new law, with every opposi-

tion lawmaker voting against it. Under the new law, someone who “posts an electronic communication where posting the electronic communication causes harm to the individual” could be liable to a fine of $9,400 and up to five years in prison. While supporters of the law hailed it as a victory for women and a strike against online harassers and trolls, critics -- including rights groups and youth and women’s organizations -- warned it was a potential “trojan horse” for internet censorship. As concerns grow over issues such as cybersecurity, fake news, internet harassment and revenge porn, a number of countries are pushing towards greater regulation of the internet. However for every well-meaning attempt to protect people online, there is an example of lawmakers seeking to co-opt such concerns to stifle dissent and censor criticism. Representatives for Fiji’s Attorney General, the Ministry of Communications and the Ministry of Information did not respond to a request for comment for this article. www.cnn.com
BURNABY – The New Vista Society officially broke ground for their new care home to provide 240 residential care beds and replace their existing facility in Burnaby.“The Province recognizes that there is a need to revitalize and create new affordable housing options across the province which is why we are investing in the redevelopment of The New Vista Society’s Care Home,” said Raj Chouhan MLA for Burnaby-Edmonds. “I know that many seniors will benefit from the facility and I look forward to visiting the new care home once complete.”The Government of B.C. provided $5.5 million to New Vista Society to support its efforts to develop a new care home as well as construction financing from BC Housing. The City of Burnaby waived development cost charges of over $600,000 for the project. The City of Burnaby is so pleased to have the opportunity to contribute to this important project,” says City of Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley. When complete, it will be an invaluable addition to our community, providing muchneeded new, affordable, residential care units for seniors. We know that New Vista’s ongoing commitment to enriching the lives of seniors will be realized in this new development, benefitting not only those who live there, but also their families and the broader community. This project will clearly demonstrate the great community benefits that can be achieved when partners work to achieve shared goals.” “We know that seniors benefit when they are living in a home with staff to support their psychosocial, physical, and medical care needs, and in a well-designed physical environment that also supports their well-being. Fraser Health is pleased to continue our ongoing partnership with New Vista and celebrates with them today as they take this next big step towards realizing their vision for a modern care home,” said Irene Sheppard, Fraser Health Executive Director, Residential Care and Assisted Living Contracted

Services. In addition, The New Vista Society received a generous donation of $1.5 million from Eunice Oh and the Rose of Sharon Foundation, both long-time supporters of the Korean Canadian community in B.C. The new care home, located at 7232 New Vista Place in Burnaby, will be a seven-storey development providing 236 subsidized residential care units and four private units. The building will also include a floor dedicated to the cultural and social-sensitive care of residents of Korean-Canadian heritage. On-site roads, services and improvements to off-site roads fronting the development will be completed as part of this construction. Construction started August 2018 and the building is anticipated to be complete summer 2020. The New Vista Society’s existing residential care facility was built in 1975. The care home is made up of two special care units for people with dementia of the Alzheimer’s type. The Care Home is divided into five villages, each providing optimal levels of care to meet the unique needs of each resident. Meals are prepared on site in our state-ofthe-art kitchen and are served in each village in common dining rooms. The New Vista Society provides affordable accommodation, barrier free housing, day support for seniors/adults with special needs and multi-level care for frail/elderly adults with physical and mental health challenges. “We are delighted to have the support of MLA Raj Chouhan, and Minister Dix and Robinson and the City of Burnaby as we build a new Care Home for seniors in our community,” said Darin Froese, CEO for The New Vista Society. “The new building will ensure we can continue to provide excellent healthcare in partnership with Fraser Health for decades to come. Tunisia’s secular opposition forms new party port
Prime Minister Youssef Chahed and supporters split from ruling Nidaa Tounes to form Tahya Tounes or ‘Long live Tunisia’. Political leaders formerly associated with Tunisia’s ruling party have announced the formation of a new movement that will compete in this year’s general elections. The formation of the new party, called Tahya Tounes - Arabic for “Long live Tunisia” - was announced in the coastal town of Monastir on Sunday. “Our goal will be to have a strong party that will lead economic reforms and return hope for frustrated Tunisians,” Zohra Idriss, a lawmaker and member of the new party, told the Reuters news agency. “We seek to lead the nation and compete with the Islamists,” Zohra added. Many of the party’s adherents are former members of President Beji Caid Essebsi’s ruling Nidaa Tounes, a loose movement hastily brought together following the 2011 overthrow of longtime autocrat Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in 2011 and united predominantly in their
opposition to the Muslim Democrat Ennahda party. Nidaa Tounes’ early successes and its ability to secure a plurality of seats in Tunisia’s 217-member parliament in 2014 was quickly overshadowed by infighting within its ranks. Disagreements over whether President Essebsi’s son, Hafedh Caid Essebsi, is fit to run the party led to mass defections that have left the parliamentary bloc with a mere 44 seats, from an initial 86. The feud, which cost Prime Minister Youssef Chahed the membership of Nidaa Tounes, spilt over to Essebsi’s partnership with Ennahda, a junior partner in the national coalition government. In September, 92-year-old Essebsi announced the end of his party’s alliance with Ennahda in a televised address over the latter’s support to Prime Minister Chahed. With both presidential and legislative elections expected in November, some analysts believe Essebsi’s decision to end his alliance with Ennahda was aimed at setting the beleaguered party apart from its political rival. Analysts say the staunchly secular Nidaa
is trying to capitalise on the current antiChahed sentiment in the wake of an unpopular reform programme that includes cutting down the public wage bill and letting go of lossmaking state companies. Some, however, say the president has been angered by Chahed’s crackdown on corruption, which has touched officials from the Ben Ali era and prominent businessmen who support Nidaa Tounes. While Chahed did not attend the party’s inauguration on Sunday, thousands of his supporters joined former Nidaa Tounes
members, including Slim Azzabi - President Essebsi’s former chief of staff - in marking the occasion. “You’ve come from different [political thought] currents and parties but what unites us is bigger,” Azzabi said. “All of us belong to the same democratic and modest family,” Azabbi said, adding that the new party will “not be one of leaders and names,” a veiled reference to the Essebsi family which has been accused of nepotism and attempting to impose a hereditary transfer of power. Bashir says Sudan protesters trying to emulate Arab Spring Sudan’s president says protesters are trying to imitate the Arab Spring uprisings of 2011, which shook the region. Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir has said protesters in the country are trying to imitate the 2011 Arab Spring and blamed unidentified outside groups for trying to destabilise the region. During a visit to Cairo on Sunday, where he met Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, al-Bashir said the unrest in Sudan was “an attempt to copy the so-called Arab Spring for Sudan.” It is Bashir’s second overseas visit since last month, when protests triggered by an increase in bread prices erupted in the country.
The demonstrations have also called for al-Bashir, who has been in power for nearly 30 years, to step down as the country’s leader. Sisi said he was eager to maintain the close historical ties between the two countries, while al-Bashir said the protests against him were not as bad as they seemed, accusing outside groups of trying to undermine his rule in what he compared with Egypt’s own experience during its 2011 uprising. “There are many negative organizations working on shaking the stability and security of the region,” al-Bashir said at a joint press conference after the meeting. ple have died in the protests, however,
rights groups have put the death toll at more than 40. Bashir, who took power in a 1989 military coup, has said any change of leadership could only come through the ballot box. He is expected to run for another term in office next year. He was indicted in 2010 by the International Criminal Court for genocide in Darfur, and restricts his travel to friendly Arab and African countries. Sudan’s economy has struggled to recover in recent years following the loss of about 80 percent of its oil reserves with the secession of South Sudan in 2011. Source: aljazeera.com

Tackling the housing crisis to make B.C a better place to live, and make life more affordable for you
By Minister and Deputy Premier Carole James Years of inaction on the B.C. housing crisis led to sky-high housing prices, drove people out of our province, hurt our communities, and hurt the businesses that create good jobs across the province. Our government is making different choices. We’re taking strong steps to tackle the housing crisis and deliver affordable housing for people in our province. We’ve made the largest investment in housing in B.C. history— more than $7 billion over 10 years. And we’re working to moderate the market while increasing supply, curbing speculative demand and tackling fraud in B.C.’s real estate market. The Speculation and Vacancy Tax (SVT) is a critical part of our work to restore housing affordability in B.C that the vast majority of British Columbians support. It stops people from using BC’s housing market as a stock
market, turns empty houses into homes for people, and raises revenue that will directly support affordable housing. Over 99% of British Columbians will be exempt, but just like the Homeowner Grant, you need to declare to claim your exemption. If you own property in one of the areas where the SVT applies, you will receive information in the mail before the end of February. Owners can start declaring for the SVT as soon as they receive their letter, and it’s easy to do-- either by phone or online. That will help ensure that people who don’t live or pay tax here pay their fair share. This is essential in ensuring that we can tackle the housing affordability crisis in our province. Cracking down on speculation in the real estate sector is a necessary step forward to tackling the housing affordability crisis, and making life better for people in B.C. It will take time and work to address the
housing crisis, which is why we have taken bold steps to make it easier for people to find good homes they can afford. We have closed unfair loopholes that were making renting harder and more expensive. And as part of our 30-point housing plan, we are building 14,000 new affordable homes for low and middle-income individuals, seniors and families, which is our first step to building 114,000 homes for people over the next 10 years. To help renters, we are cutting the annual allowable rent increase by 2%, while increasing funding to the Residential Tenancy Branch. We also closed the fixed-term lease and the geographic loopholes, which gives renters more protection from unfair evictions and rent increases. For our province to succeed, the people who work here need to be able to afford to live here too. We’re going to keep working
hard to tackle the housing crisis and make life more affordable for the people who live here. Because when it comes to choosing between British Columbians struggling to afford a home, and real estate speculators – our government will choose hardworking British Columbians each and every time.
tute, Benjamin Dachis argued for revamping outdated zoning laws, reducing development charges to the actual infrastructure costs borne by municipalities, and reviewing restrictions on greenfield development. “Local governments must approve the construction of more homes, and at a quicker rate — be it by streamlining the building permit approvals process or making major changes to the city’s zoning bylaws,” Josef Filipowicz and Steve Lafleur of the right-wing Fraser Institute wrote in a recent op-ed. “Either way, city hall holds the key to cooling prices.” This may help explain why the affordable housing plan unveiled by NDP leader Jagmeet Singh this week is such a confusing muddle, to say nothing of the Liberals’ reaction to it: They’re promising to solve a problem that they really can’t. Singh’s goal, nothing if not ambitious, is 500,000 new affordable housing units over 10 years. Part of his plan to get there is to remove the GST from new affordable housing developments. And this seems eminently reasonable: If you want people to do more of something, you make it cheaper. The Liberals had proposed exactly the same in their 2015 platform. Now, however, high-strung Liberal housing and urban affairs critic Adam Vaughan is dead set agin’ it. He claims it’s “a recipe to bankrupt housing providers right across the country,” which is … a bit odd. As Jeff Morrison, executive director of the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association, dryly told Canadian Press, “I’ve never known any-
one to go bankrupt from getting money.” The Liberals abandoned the idea, Vaughan argued, in part because they worried “affordable” housing developments might transmogrify into not-so-affordable housing developments, leaving the feds essentially subsidizing luxury housing. Politically, it’s something no party would want to be seen doing (though it seems like a pitfall that a competent government could avoid). But at the same time, new luxury condos aren’t a bad thing. Many Toronto renters, for example, are right on the economic line between the condo and traditional rental markets. (Your correspondent is one of them.) When one moves up, a less fancy unit comes vacant. If you give renters money, whatever else you might be doing, you’re driving up the market price of renting The other two items in Singh’s proposal are more suspect. With all but the sketchiest details still to come, he proposes subsidizing people who are spending more than 30 per cent of their income on rent. And he proposes doubling the first-time home buyers’ credit from $750 to $1,500. If you’re spending 45 per cent of your income on housing and you have rent control, then Singh might have good news for you. But if you give renters money, whatever else you might be doing, you’re driving up the market price of renting. Same thing when you give first-time home buyers more money: You’re increasing everyone’s budget by $750 or $1,500 or whatever, all of which goes to the seller.
As UBC economist Kevin Milligan observed this week, Singh’s plan smacks of a “centreright” approach. He suggested a more naturally NDP plan would eliminate the home buyer’s credit and the exemption from capital gains tax for the sale of personal residences, and pour the resulting nearly $7 billion into building housing. (Lee’s CCPA study recommended almost exactly that.) But the fixation on home ownership, as opposed to housing per se, pervades Canadian politics across the spectrum. And as we’re seeing, it leads policymakers to some weird places. Rent or own, though, housing won’t get built in the quantities that cities like Vancouver and Toronto desperately need it until policies way down the chain from Ottawa change significantly. And those debates are often just as incoherent as the one in Ottawa. One of the Ontario Liberal government’s last moves was to extend rent control to every unit in the province — a move that overwhelmingly benefited relatively wellto-do people who live in nice rental condos (your correspondent is one of them), and that could only discourage new rental development. And when Ontario’s new Progressive Conservative government decreed all new units would henceforth be free of rent control, which could only encourage rental development, most affordable housing advocates howled. The demand is here, and it is massive. What we need is supply. To get it, cities simply have to let it happen. Everything else is hot noise. Source: nationalpost.com
Chris Selley: Sorry, the feds can’t build you a house
By: Chris Selley In Ottawa, the Liberals and NDP are at war over affordable housing policy. But only local governments can solve the supply problem If one goes a-Googling for proposed solutions to Canada’s affordable housing shortage, one will find the boffins mostly preoccupied with municipal and provincial affairs. They might call for more money from Ottawa, as Marc Lee did in a 2016 paper for the left-wing Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. But to actually spend it, to actually ramp up construction, they know there will need to be changes at the local level. The CCPA paper, focused on the Vancouver market, argued for “gentler forms of density” that might mollify militant NIMBYs, along with inclusionary zoning (i.e., a certain number of units are designated “affordable” in perpetuity) and progressive property taxation (i.e., the more your house is worth, the higher the rate). The details change as you navigate the political spectrum, but the focus does not. In a 2018 paper for the centrist C.D. Howe Insti-

Chinese Islamophobia was made in the West
By:Mobashra Tazamalby n response to the rising international criticism regarding the detainment of more than a million Uighur Muslims in so-called “re-education camps”, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi defended the country’s actions, stating, “the efforts are completely in line with the direction the international community has taken to combat terrorism ... if we can take care of prevention, then it will be impossible for terrorism to spread and take root.” Other Chinese officials defended their country’s actions, claiming that Islam is an “ideological illness,” positioning the concentration camps as “hospitals” needed to “cure” people from this sickness. China’s ambassador to the US, Cui Tiankai stated that the country is trying to turn the Uighurs into “normal people,” and a pro-government newspaper tweeted: “The West should be consistent over its own value system. How can it be fine to kill terrorists with missiles, but a humanitarian crisis when Xinjiang attempts to turn them into normal people?” Such statements describe the faith of over 1.7 billion people as an illness from which they need to be cured. Viewing Islam as an abnormality and the cause of “extremism,” is not exclusive to China, rather it finds its home in the West’s Countering Violence Extremism (CVE) programs, which view expressions of Muslim identity as uniquely associated with “extremism” and “radicalisation.” Programs aimed at “preventing extremism,” have resulted in the stigmatisation and criminalisation of Muslim communities. Today’s public discourse on terrorism consists of a fixation on Islam and the expression of Muslim identity as indicators of “extremism,” “radicalisation,” and “terrorism”. It is not a line of thought constrained to the
People’s Republic of China, rather this viewpoint permeates much of Western academic research and policies. Termed “new terrorism” studies, this field of work arose post-9/11 in an effort to explain, not understand, 21st-century political violence and argued that Islam was the root cause for individuals choosing to engage in violence. In the US, this framework led to destructive wars abroad, surveillanceof Muslim communities at home, and broad violations of human rights. In 2011, a US government white paper likened the hijab to “passive terrorism.” The author viewed an article of clothing - a headscarf worn by many Muslim women who feel it is part of their religion - as an indicator of support for violence. This same cultural racist argument underpins the hijab and veil bans that are sprouting up across Europe. Politicians and activists who support such measures argue that a piece of cloth is equal to violence and thus pass legislation that forces women to undress, resulting in the gross violation of individuals’ human rights. Such policies are built on a false and unfounded premise that identifies markers attributed to Muslim identity (growing a beard, attending mosque, wearing a hijab, etc) as indicators of “radicalisation” and “extremism.” China too has adopted this framework as veils and “abnormal” beards are forbidden in the Xinjiang region. Chinese officials’ dangerous claim that Islam is an “illness” can also find precedent in the comments made by western politicians who have long used anti-Muslim claims to promote their hostile agendas. In 2014, Oklahoma state representative, John
Bennett, described Islam as a “cancer in our nation that needs to be cut out.” Donald Trump’s former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn described Islam as a “malignant cancer,” and asserted that “fear of Muslims is RATIONAL”. A 2016 tweet from Flynn shares eery similarities to China’s current claims, as he declares “Islamic ideology [is] sick and must B healed”. In 2015 on The Kelly File, conservative political commentator Glenn Beck argued that there is a “disease in Islam” and it must be addressed. Such dangerous claims pathologising a belief system are not restricted to the United States. In March 2017, far-right Australian politician, Pauline Hanson, stated: “Islam is a disease; we need to vaccinate ourselves against that.” In 2017, Caroline Santos, a candidate for United Kingdom’s right-wing UKIP, described Islam as a “cancer” in a tweet praising far-right figure Tommy Robinson. Noted anti-Muslim figures like Ayan Hirsi Ali and Asra Nomani have also attributed common Muslim phrases of “Allahu Akbar,” (God is Great), and ‘inshAllah” (God willing) as being associated with extremism and terrorism. Nomani and Hirsi Ali are known right-wing figures who have made a career out of promoting dangerous and discriminatory views about Muslims, but their claims that Arabic terminology is a “red flag” for extremism and/or terrorism is not relegated to a niche political view. In
2018, Swiss officials fined a man for saying “Allahu Akbar” in public, and defended their actions arguing that a “passersby could have mistaken him for a terrorist.” Today in China, Muslims who have been heard greeting one another with the common phrase, “As-Salam Alaikum,” (peace be upon you) have found themselves detained in the everexpanding networkof concentration camps. China is instituting the very calls made by western politicians to “cut out” Islam, by criminalising any expression of Muslim identity, including removing Qurans from people’s homes, restricting fasting during the month of Ramadan, and forbidding Muslim parents from giving their children Muslim names. In an effort to “heal” Muslims from this “dangerous ideology,” the government has established 28 detention camps, described by Amnesty International as comparable to “wartime concentration camps,” aimed at mass scale eradication of Uighur Muslim identity. Detainees in the camps are forced to endure psychological and physical torture, renounce their faith, and pledge allegiance to the Chinese communist party. Under the guise of preventing terrorism, governments have been able to institute discriminatory and deadly policies targeting Muslim communities. Proponents of such measures justify their actions with the demonstrably false and discriminatory argument that identifies Islam as an explanatory factor in political violence. What we’re currently witnessing in China is the product of a framework that points to Islam and the expression of Muslim identity as the root cause of terrorism, a viewpoint that finds its roots in, and is a staple of, Western political discourse. The views expressed in this article are the author’s own. Source: Al Jazeera.net

What an early draft tells us about Canada’s new food guide
C
By Leslie Young , January 9, 2019 anada’s new food guide, expected sometime early this year, already looks like it might be a big change from the old “food rainbow” design that hung in classrooms for years. While the new guide has yet to be finalized, some clues about its contents can be found in an October 2018 report prepared by Earnscliffe Strategy Group in which the firm was asked to present various concepts and illustrations to focus groups to find out what Canadians think.
How to eat
The most novel change is that it looks like the new food guide will also include advice on how to eat — rather than just what to eat. “Healthy eating is more than the foods you eat,” reads a heading in an illustration meant to provide key concepts at a glance. It suggests being “mindful” of your eating habits, cooking more often, sharing meals with others and drinking water. What to eat is “just a piece of the puzzle,” said Kate Comeau, a registered dietitian and spokesperson for Dietitians of Canada. Cooking at home helps teach kids cooking habits that can extend into adulthood, as well as conferring nutritional benefits, she said.
What to eat
and fresh tomatoes, bagged salad, broccoli, melons and berries. Similar illustrations from the old food guide included fruit juice — this one doesn’t. “The Dietitians of Canada say that children do not need juice,” Comeau said, and in her experience, people often grossly overestimate how much juice constitutes a serving, which the last food guide said was just half a cup, or 125 mL. Protein foods seem to include tofu, beans, fish, nuts and peanut butter, meat and a carton of milk — the only appearance of a dairy product on this illustration, though Health Canada’s emailed statement also noted that low-fat cheese and yogurt would count as protein foods, too. “[Milk] is still on there as a nutritious food,” Comeau said. “I think we’ll see whether that language of protein foods persists but I think we’re, as dietitians, generally supportive of the idea that all of those foods are nourishing foods.”
In an illustration showing different kinds of food, the new food guide looks like it might do away with some of the food groups with which most Canadians would be familiar. The old food guide rainbow broke diets into four food groups: vegetables and fruit, grain products, milk and alternatives and meat and alternatives Under the heading “Eat a variety of healthy foods every day,” a proposed illustration for the new food guide seems to instead emphasize eating lots of whole-grain foods, plenty of vegetables and fruit and protein foods. The old food groups model has been criticized before, as a lot of the calories Canadians eat don’t fall into one of the four current food groups, and some question whether milk and dairy products really deserved their own separate category. Examples under the new “whole-grain” category include wild rice, brown bread, a brown pita and, presumably, whole-wheat pasta. Vegetable and fruit examples include canned How much to eat
It’s only a single illustration, but this picture seems to be missing advice on how many servings of each food you should eat every day. The old guide recommended, for example, that adult men eat seven servings of vegetables and fruit, seven servings of grain and three servings each of dairy and meat per day.
What not to eat
The draft illustration of the new food guide also suggests that people limit foods high in sodium, sugars and saturated fat offering the examples of pizza, muffins and a can of soda. Earlier draft “foundational statements” also emphasized eating fewer processed foods. The illustration also advises that people read nutrition labels and “be aware of food marketing.” Source: globalnews.ca
Learn more about February Heart Month
Heart and Stroke Foundation - History ore than 60 years ago, a visionary group of Canadians, including physicians and researchers, established the National Heart Foundation of Canada with big hopes for the future. They had a dream: to put heart health on the public agenda, to empower researchers to turn the tide on heart disease, and to educate Canadians about their hearts. With the emergence of Ontario’s Foundation in 1952 and British Columbia’s three years later, a network soon began to develop across the country. In 1956, the Quebec and Saskatchewan Foundations were established. In 1961, the Foundation was renamed the Canadian Heart Foundation. After decades of growth in influence and impact on the health of Canadians, the Heart and Stroke Foundation reached its latest milestone in 2011, when the national office and nine independent provincial bodies united to become one strong, national

organization. Today, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada is at work in communities from coast to coast, with: • 130,000 volunteers • close to two million donors Since 1956, the Foundation has raised and invested more than $1.3 billion in leadingedge heart disease and stroke research. These impressive results have been made possible by the ongoing and valuable efforts of volunteers and donors across this country. Heart Month - History The Heart Month campaign began in 1958 when the Foundation, led by Dr. Wilfred Bigelow, committed to raise $600,000 to fund heart research. In Ontario, volunteers in Hamilton, Kingston, Lakehead, London, Oakville, Oshawa, Peterborough and Port Hope launched a modest door-to-door campaign to raise a provincial goal of $250,000. By the end of the campaign, they had exceeded goal and raised $320,000.
In 1962, the canvass – named the “Heart Sunday Canvass” – was expanded to include additional cities. Canvassers consisted primarily of Air Cadet Squadrons, Ladies’ Auxiliary and Canadian Legion branches and medical students from the University of Toronto. Today, the February Heart Month canvass is a national, community-based fundraising campaign. The success of this program depends on its 100,000 volunteers, who make friendly, personal requests to their neighbours and online networks. and raise awareness of heart disease and stroke within their communities. Today, heart disease and stroke take one life every 7 minutes and 90% of Canadians have at least one risk factor. Heart Month is the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s key opportunity to reach millions of Canadians in February and alert them to the risks of heart disease and stroke. Inter-Religious Marriage And Islam
By: Rabbi Allen S. Maller here is a deep satisfaction in the collective even if it means giving up a bit on the individual, he always says. One day, it’s a few hours to your birthday. Your brother rings you the night before the day, telling you he’s coming over with his troops (wife and daughter) at midnight to cut cake and have tea. You know you must be getting old when you hear yourself telling him you’re going to sleep. It’s 9pm on a Saturday. Actually, you’re not getting old, you’re just too tired to explain that you’re dead tired because you work a thankless day job in the public sector, trying to fix initially education, but just about everything lately, it seems. That’s not entirely true, though. The job in itself is meaningful because of the work. But it’s hard work trying to see the goodness in the day. I mean, you do try, like when somebody at a government department frequently jokes with you about getting a new soundcard because you have an ‘unusual’ voice (read: not really, just different from the standard higher-pitched ones that are the stereotype by which women are identified as female in our social context), you joke back. A Liberal Approach In 1980 Jamal Khwaja, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Philosophy at Aligarh Muslim University in India, wrote an article titled “Inter-Religious Marriage And Islam” which was reprinted in IslamiCity on November 16, 2018. Professor Khwaja advocates a very liberal position on InterReligious Marriage: “The prohibition against inter-religious marriage is dinned into our ears from childhood with the result that the idea sounds to most of us as almost unthinkable. When such marriages do take place, they are
looked upon as unfortunate social accidents and generate a lot of tension or resentment within the concerned families and also society in general. Such marriages are not tolerated but merely endured by the family. One frequently hears of parents disowning their son or daughter. Both Hindus and Muslims reject the idea of inter-marriage on grounds, which are religious as well as social, psychological or cultural.” He goes on to add, “Parents and society in general should respect the authentic choice of every adult, even if it be against any particular religious tradition or against religion as such. To the extent that parents encourage the child or the youth to attain to a state of spiritual autonomy and inner honesty they guide the child into the portals of true religion and into the arms of Divinity. No religious creed can, possibly be proved in the logical or scientific sense. It is, therefore, essential to accept and tolerate the diversity of faiths not as a thorn in the rosebush, but as different flowers in the garden of the human family. Even the total rejection of religion, provided moral values are not abandoned, should be fully tolerated by parents and by society.”
The Other Point of View
As a Rabbi I respectfully disagree with Professor Khwaja. As a Professor of Philosophy, he thinks of religion as an individual’s cerebral, intellectual ideology. As a Rabbi, I think of religion as the personal identity that one feels as a member of a traditional religious community. The religious community of course has a theology which connects it with the revelation of its sacred scriptures; and the traditional teachings of its most important commentators. If a religious community has survived for many centuries; it also contains sub-groups within it that have different views on some issues: like Orthodox, Conservative and Reform within Judaism or Sunni, Shia and Sufi among Muslims. Theologians, sectarians, and radical politicians often call the divergent individuals or groups heretics and sectarians; but most of the normal believers in the religion do not think of these groups in this way. For example, I am a Reform Rabbi who believes that Muhammad was an authentic Prophet for non-Jews; and a forerunner Prophet of Reform Judaism for Jews. I first studied Islam when I was a student at UCLA over 58 years ago. Then again I
learned about it while I was in Rabbinical school. Over the years I continued to read the Qur’an and other Islamic books. I read these Islamic books as the Prophet taught his followers in a Hadith “not as a believer, and not as a disbeliever”. What does that mean? The Qur’an, of course, is sacred scripture for Muslims. A disciple of Muhammad named Abu Huraira related, “The people of the Book used to read the Torah in Hebrew and then explain it in Arabic to the Muslims. Allah’s Apostle said (to the Muslims), “Do not believe the people of the Book, nor disbelieve them, but say, ‘We believe in Allah, and whatever is revealed to us, and whatever is revealed to you.’” (Bukhari book #92, Hadith #460) Following Muhammad’s teaching I too neither believe nor disbelieve in the Qur’an. If I believed in the Qur’an I would be a member of the Muslim ummah (community). But I cannot disbelieve in the Qur’an because I do believe that Muhammad was a prophet; and I respect the Qur’an as a kindred revelation, first revealed to a kindred people, in a kindred language. In fact, the people, the language, and the theology are closer to my own people, language, and theology than that of any other on earth. Thus, I feel that I am a Muslim Jew i.e. a faithful Jew submitting to the will of God, because I am a Reform Rabbi. (Reform Jews are now the largest of the Jewish denominations in the U.S. In the U.K..Reform Judaism is called Liberal Judaism, and Progressive Judaism in Europe.) As a Rabbi I am faithful to the covenant that God made with Abraham, the first Jew to become a muslim, and I submit to be bound by the commandments and covenant God made with the People of Israel at Mount Sinai.

Confidence
By: Shabnam Khan -Family Counsellor elf-confidence is extremely important in almost every aspect of our lives, yet so many people struggle to find it. Sadly, this can be a vicious circle: people who lack self-confidence can find it difficult to become successful! After all, most people are reluctant to slow down at a project that’s being instructed by someone who is nervous and lacks confidence. On the other hand, you might be persuaded by someone who speaks clearly, who holds his or her head high, who answers questions assuredly, and who readily admits when he or she does not know something. Confident people inspire confidence in others: their audience, their peers, their bosses, their customers, and their friends. And gaining the confidence of others is one of the key ways in which a self-confident person finds success. The good news is that self-confidence really can be learned and built on. And, whether you’re working on your own self-
confidence or building the confidence of people around you, it’s wellworth the effort! Self-confidence is about balance. At one extreme, we have people with low selfconfidence. At the other end, we have people who may be over-confident. If you are under-confident, you’ll avoid taking risks and stretching yourself and you might not try at all. And if you’re over-confident, you may take on too much risk, stretch yourself beyond your capabilities, and crash badly. You may also find that you’re so optimistic that you don’t try hard enough to truly succeed. Getting this right is a matter of having the right amount of confidence, founded in reality and on your true ability!! info:shabnam@skcounselling.ca
“Children in Family”!

ecently I was out to one of the most cosmopolitan city of the world. I had good chances of meeting and spending quality time with many youngsters, young adults, parents, children and families. It was very interesting and enriching experience. The youngsters were full of life, ready to face challenges. They had dreams and courage to walk on the hard path to pursue it. Some children were lucky enough to have parents and friends support. Some were struggling on all fronts. Some children were troubled as they were not able to get anywhere with family, they were not able to convince them now they were able to give up their views and accept parents plan

Inter-Religious Marriage And Islam
Continued from page 19
My views are unusual in the Reform Jewish community but not considered heretical by other Reform Rabbis. Most Orthodox Rabbis would consider all Reform Rabbis as heretics yet we all identify ourselves as belonging to Banu Israel— the Jewish People.
Opposing Inter-Religious Marriage
My sacred scriptures also oppose Inter-Religious Marriage: “Do not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons, because they will turn your children away from following Me to serve other gods.” (Bible, Deuteronomy 7:3-4) The Qur’an permits the marriage of Muslim men to Christian and Jewish women: (“Today (all) good things are made lawful for you. The food of those who have received the Scripture is lawful for you, and your food is lawful for them. And so are the virtuous women of the believers (Muslims) and the virtuous women of those who received the Scripture before you (Jews and Christians) when you give them their marriage portions and live with them in honor, not in fornication, nor taking them as secret concubines.” (Qur’an 5:5) There were no exceptions from the prohibition against inter-faith marriage in the Hebrew Bible because there were no other ongoing monotheistic communities in existence during those many centuries. Later the Rabbis did not consider Trinitarian Christians using statues in worship, to be monotheistic. Today, most Protestant Churches no longer use statues and pictures of Jesus in worship, although most still remain Trinitarian in belief. However, Muslims and Jews consider each other’s religion, Islam and Judaism, to be a totally monotheistic religion. So why do Jews and Muslims still face family opposition to marriage with non-trinitarian Christians?
Divorce in Mixed Religion Marriages
One issue is the higher chances of divorce in mixed religion marriages. Most Americans are concerned that the divorce rate has stabilized at a little under 40%. Some are resigned to high divorce rates as a side effect of individual freedom that we can’t do anything about. Yet study after study shows that people with no religious identity have divorce rates over 50% while people who are very religious have divorce rates that are 40-50% below the 40% average. Although “Hollywood” doesn’t like the idea that religion is as important as love in maintaining marital happiness, the evidence is clear for those who are willing to look at it. First, we need to admit that love is a powerful but not very stable emotion. Most marriages that break up do so within seven years of the wedding. Couples who are living together break up faster, and in even higher proportion than married couples. Many of the couples I married over the last 50 years have lived with, and broken up with, two or three people before they enter into their first marriage. Although the entertainment industry fervently advocates the idea that love is the answer to every problem, singles in the trenches are increasingly skeptical. Second, religiously mixed couples face extra high divorce rates. This has been well known to sociologists and marriage counselors for 6-7 decades. However, new research found that for all religious groups unifying
the family religiously reduces the extra-high divorce rate substantially. Alas, most mixed couples do not try, or do not succeed, in unifying their family religiously, and thus do not reduce their extra-high probability of divorce. Jews and Muslims are the least likely to convert to a spouse’s religion (less than 4% do) and only 10-12% of non-Jewish spouses become Jewish. Catholics and Protestants are more likely to convert or to influence their partners to convert. But, in recent decades the percentage of CatholicProtestant couples that unify their religious identity has declined substantially. Third, how to raise their children is the most important decision facing a Jew or a Muslim planing to marry a Christian. Some couples frankly admit that they do not intend to give their children any religious education or spiritual direction at all. Most people do not find this solution to be acceptable since usually one or both of the parents believe that it is important for children to believe in God and have a clear religious identity. Exposing the children to both religions sounds better to most people. It sounds more liberal, evenhanded and even spiritually richer, but it risks really confusing the children. Catholics and Protestants both believe in the Divinity of Jesus. Jews and Muslims do not. Marriages between Christians and Jews or Muslims are much more problematic than marriages between different denominations of Christians. Almost all Christian
denominations teach that Jesus is the Son of God. Judaism and Islam deny Divinity to Jesus. Thus the children will be taught two contradictory beliefs. This is a good way to create less belief rather than more. In addition, it is hard enough to practice one religion religiously. To do two, is extremely difficult. Even when both partners are Christian, but of different denominations, there is a falling off: although 81% of those in mixed Christian marriages say they desire religious training for their children, only 62% of those who currently have children are providing religious training for them (vs.75% in samefaith marriages). When a Jew, or a Muslim, marry a Christian, the problems are much greater. Will the family go to a mosque, or a synagogue, or a church? Although some couples do try hard to give their children a good Islamic or Jewish education and also a good Christian education and a true experience of both religions, very few actually go through with it. After a few years almost all Jewish-Christian couples sink to the lowest common denominator; celebrating Hanukkah plus Christmas, and visiting the grandparents for Easter and Passover. To be honest, a few superficial practices engaged in a couple of times a year will hardly be spiritually enriching for anyone. In effect, these couples are not doing both: they are really doing neither. They usually don’t like to admit this, because it sounds like they are depriving their children of any real solid religious identity. For parents to admit they do nothing is to admit that belief in God and a positive religious identity for their children is unimportant to them. Nevertheless, the both/neither option is the most popular one in Jewish/Christian marriages. It should not be surprising therefore that the most popular religious category for the children of Jewish/Christian marriages is “none”. Source: Islamicity

Immigration sponsorship form appears online for less than 10 minutes
H
undreds of immigrants are expressing frustration after a form required for sponsoring their parents or grandparents for immigration to Canada was available online for less than 10 minutes. After scrapping the lottery system in place since 2016, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada said earlier this month that they would make an “interest to sponsor” parents and grandparents form available online “for a limited time” on “first-in basis” on Monday at noon EST. Potential applicants were told that that the form, which is several pages long and requires uploading proof of immigration status, “should take about 10 minutes” to fill out. Raj Gopalakrishnan says he tried to submit his form at about five minutes after noon EST, but received a message on his laptop screen saying that the process had already closed. “Is this a typing skills test?” Gopalakrishnan told CTVNews.ca from his home in Red Deer, Alta. “They mention in their website that this form will take 10 minutes to complete.” “What if there’s a power outage or a communication outage in your area?” he added. “Or you’re a person with disability?” Gopalakrishnan says he came to Canada
in 2009 and has been trying to sponsor his mother for the past six years.“Mr. Trudeau should look into this matter,” he said. “I’d like to go back to the system like when the Conservatives were in power,” he added. As of Monday afternoon, more than 1,000 people have signed an online petition asking that the 2019 process be redone. Raz Tomsa, an immigrant from Romania who lives in Montreal, was among those disappointed. “Exactly when it turned from 11:59 to noon on my computer ... I refreshed the page,” Tomsa said. “At 12:06 or 12:07 I got a message that the application form is no longer available because they’ve received all the applications,” he added. Tomsa, who works in analytics and is hoping to bring both of his parents to Canada, says he believes that the system was poorly designed. “I understand that in the past they used a lottery system,” he said. “I get it. In a lottery, you buy a ticket and you have a chance to win or not win. With this, you didn’t even have a chance to buy the ticket.” The Liberals introduced the lottery system
in 2016. The lottery was supposed to be an improvement after a backlog of applications filed in person or by mail grew to more than 167,000 under the previous Conservative government of Stephen Harper. Wait times for processing the applications were as high as eight years. IRCC Press Secretary Mathieu Genest told CTVNews.ca Monday that the Liberal government has “worked hard” to reduce the backlog, and has cut wait times for processing to between 20 and 24 months. Genest said that IRCC did “extensive testing” to make sure the website could handle Monday’s anticipated volume, and that they “implemented anti-bot features in order to ensure that submissions received were legitimate.” “Initial analysis indicates that there were no technical issues when the form opened today and that we have received the maximum number of submissions for 2019,” he said. “We understand that those who were not able to make a submission are disappointed,” Genest went on. “We can confirm over 100,000 individuals attempted to access the interest to sponsor form.” Pamela Telen of Calgary was one of the
lucky ones. She says she filled out the form as quickly as possible and hit submit at 12:04 p.m. EST. She received an email about half an hour later confirming the form was received. Telen says she feels sorry for the people who weren’t able to submit their forms, having experienced the frustration of trying unsuccessfully to sponsor her mother from the Philippines since 2011. “I’ve been here since 2004. I’m 28,” she said. “Living more than half my life without my mom has been less than ideal. She was 45 when I started (applying) and now she’s 53.” “I’m cautiously optimistic,” Telen added. “But until I have the approval for my mother’s visa in front of me, I won’t be ecstatic.” Source: ctvnews.ca

YOUTH
Digital Life and youth well being findings
s part of Children and Screens’ ongoing support and curation of cutting-edge, objective, scientifically-rigorous interdisciplinary research, we invited nearly 140 preeminent experts from 10 different disciplines in 22 workgroups to compile the latest research on the effects of media on growth and development, cognition and mental health in toddlers, children and adolescents. The resulting findings were aggregated and published in a special supplement, “Children, Adolescents, and Screens: What We Know and What We Need to Learn”, in the highly-regarded journal Pediatrics, released on November 1, 2017. Subsequent new research has also been synthesized and presented where applicable.
Research Summary
Digital media are woven into the fabric of most young people’s lives today. This social fact raises concerns about the varied impacts of frequent (often ongoing) engagement on social network sites and communicating with peers, family, and others through text messaging and apps. This article distills findings from research focused on digital life’s impacts on youth (especially adolescent) well-being, social connectedness, empathy, and narcissism. Studies suggest a mixed picture regarding well-being outcomes. Some studies find social media use is associated with increased self-esteem, social confidence, and reduced depression, while others point to lower lifesatisfaction and other ill-being indicators. The nature of media use, content, platforms, and experiences with peers are important mediators of outcomes. Digital media positively contribute to social connectedness in facilitating existing relationships and new connections around shared interests and
struggles, including medical conditions. On the negative side, pressures to be always available to peers via digital devices can cause stress. Further, mobile phones can interfere with or undercut the quality of inperson interactions. Connections between digital life and empathic or narcissistic personality traits are unclear. Studies variously suggest that social media usage can be associated with narcissism and with higher or lower empathy scores. This review suggests further research is needed to understand how, where, when, and for whom digital media contribute to positive vs. negative personal and social well-being outcomes. Research designs that include direct observation of digital media use, consideration of contextual and individual factors, and which uncover key causal mechanisms at play are warranted. The article also suggests a need for investigations of how different educational curricula, school policies, and parenting approaches support or undercut well-being outcomes. Recommendations for pediatricians include nuanced discussions of media usage during clinical visits. For educators and policymakers, well-being issues should be addressed as part of digital citizenship initiatives.
a sense of autonomy. Do social media make young people more narcissistic and/or focused on their own self-image? Research suggests a connection between narcissism and use of social media; narcissistic people have been found to use social networking sites more often and in more self-promoting ways than less narcissistic people. However, it is unclear whether such social media use actually contributes to narcissism or whether already narcissistic individuals are drawn to social media. Give Imran Khan’s government ‘another six months’, says Zardari
PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari has said he would give Prime Minister Imran Khan’s government another six months, following which he suggested that the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf-led (PTI) administration would collapse. Speaking during an interview on 92 News TV show ‘Ho Kya Raha Hai’ on Monday, the former president confidently said the combined opposition could dislodge the PTI government at both the federal and Punjab provincial levels if it so desires. “Give at least six more months to him,” Zardari replied when he was asked by host Arif Nizami if he was making “chess moves” to bring down Prime Minister Khan. When reminded that the premier has already completed nearly six months in office, the PPP leader emphasised he meant “another six months”.Thus the talk of the PTI government completing its five-year tenure is a far cry from
the anticipated future, Zardari said, adding that he believed Khan lacked “deliverance” capacity. Asked if the removal of Khan’s government would be better for the country, Zardari said the country had to evolve through crises by “pushing [and] pulling all sorts of ways”. He said whenever they wanted to send the prime minister home it would be a “positive, not a negative”, and when prompted, stressed that such a move would “obviously” be undertaken through democratic means. Zardari said Prime Minister Khan had made promises to many of his friends which he would not be able to fulfil. One such promise cited by him was allegedly made by the premier to Balochistan National Party (BNP-M) president Sardar Akhtar Mengal regarding the issue of missing persons. The former president was asked about the possibility of a forward bloc being formed in Punjab, to which he replied that while it could be done, there was “no rush”. Responding to another question, Zardari said it was a fact that the PPP and PML-N had jointly appointed retired Justice Javed Iqbal as the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman, but that they had done so for him to “provide justice”. “[As opposed to] not for victimisation?” the host asked the PPP co-chairman, who smiled in the affirmative. Alleging that NAB was getting politicised, Zardari said there was “room to work” and bring improvements in the accountability watchdog’s functioning. Source: dawn.com
Shahid Masood granted bail in PTV corruption case The Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to anchorperson Shahid Masood against surety bonds worth Rs500,000 in a case pertaining to embezzlement of Rs38 million from state-run broadcaster Pakistan Television. According to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Dr Masood during his tenure as managing director and chairman of PTV was involved in the embezzlement of Rs37 million in acquiring Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) media rights in 2008. The agreement was allegedly carried out with a fake company — M/s International Sports Solution (ISS). Investigators claim that funds were also released, causing the loss of millions of dollars to PTV as the staterun television channel failed to acquire PCB media rights from 2008 to 2013. A two-member bench headed by Justice Manzoor Ahmed accepted Masood’s bail application today. The anchorperson stated in his appeal that he is a “blunt” analyst and critic of government policies, due to which he has been “a target of governmental institutions”. The plea noted that although the FIA had shut the case, it was reopened
in 2015. “Suspects Kashif Rabbani, Fawad Shabbir and Roshan Gilani are all facing trial and have also started paying back the embezzled amount,” the bail plea added. The anchor accused the FIA of harassing him and not being able to come up with any proof against him. Masood added that the Islamabad High Court (IHC) had rejected his request for bail without examining the facts of the case as his name “was not mentioned in the first investigation report”. On December 23 last year, Masood was arrested from the premises of the IHC by the FIA after the court dismissed his petition. Source: dawn.com

KASHMIR/

Kashmir Solidarity Day Feb 5th
K
ashmir Solidarity Day or Kashmir Day, is a national holiday in Pakistan and also observed by Kashmiri nationalists on 5 February each year. It is in observance of Pakistan’s support of and unity with the people of Indian-administered Kashmir, the nationalists’ efforts to separate from India, and to pay homage to Kashmiris who have died in the conflict.Solidarity rallies are held in Azad Kashmir, Pakistan and by Mirpuri Kashmiris in the United Kingdom. The day often marks unrest in Indianadministered Kashmir. Kashmir Day was first proposed by the Jamaat-e-Islami party in Pakistan in 1990. In 1991, the then-Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif called for a “Kashmir Solidarity Day Strike”. Kashmir Conflict The Kashmir conflict is a territorial conflict primarily between India and Pakistan, having started just after the partition of India in 1947. China has at times played a minor role. India and Pakistan have fought three wars over Kashmir, including the IndoPakistani Wars of 1947 and 1965, as well as the Kargil War of 1999. The two countries have also been involved in several skirmishes over control of the Siachen Glacier. India claims the entire princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, and, as of 2010, administers approximately 43% of the region. It controls Jammu, the Kashmir Valley, Ladakh, and the Siachen Glacier. India’s claims are contested by Pakistan, which administers approximately 37% of the region, namely Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.China currently administers the remaining 20% mostly uninhabited areas, the Shaksgam Valley, and the Aksai Chin region. The present conflict is in Kashmir Valley. The root of conflict between the Kashmiri insurgents and the Indian government is tied to a dispute over local autonomy and based on the demand for self-determination. Democratic development was limited in Kashmir until the late 1970s, and by 1988, many of the democratic reforms introduced by the Indian Government had been reversed. Non-violent channels for expressing discontent were thereafter limited and caused a dramatic increase in support for
insurgents advocating violent secession from India. In 1987, a disputed state election created a catalyst for the insurgency when it resulted in some of the state’s legislative assembly members forming armed insurgent groups. In July 1988 a series of demonstrations, strikes and attacks on the Indian Government began the Kashmir Insurgency. Although thousands of people have died as a result of the turmoil in Jammu and Kashmir, the conflict has become less deadly in recent years. Protest movements created to voice Kashmir’s disputes and grievances with the Indian government, specifically the Indian Military, have been active in Jammu and Kashmir since 1989. Elections held in 2008 were generally regarded as fair by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and had a high voter turnout in spite of calls by separatist militants for a boycott. The election resulted in the creation of the pro-India Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, which then formed a government in the state. According to Voice of America, many analysts have interpreted the high voter turnout in this election as a sign that the people of Kashmir endorsed Indian rule in the state. But in 2010 unrest erupted after alleged fake encounter of local youth with security force. Thousands of youths pelted security forces with rocks, burned government offices and attacked railway stations and official vehicles in steadily intensifying violence. The Indian government blamed separatists and Lashkar-e-Taiba, a Pakistan-based militant group for stoking the 2010 protests. United States positions on the Kashmir conflict In an interview with Joe Klein of Time magazine in October 2008, Barack Obama expressed his intention to try to work with India and Pakistan to resolve the crisis. He said he had talked to Bill Clinton about it, as Clinton has experience as a mediator. In an editorial in The Washington Times, Selig S Harrison, director of the Asia Programme at the Center for International Policy and a senior scholar of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars called it Obama’s first foreign policy mistake. In an editorial, The Australian called Obama’s idea to appoint a presidential negotiator “a very stupid and dangerous move indeed”. In an editorial in Forbes, Reihan Salam, associate editor for The Atlantic, noted “The smartest thing President Obama could do on Kashmir is probably nothing. We have to hope that India and Pakistan can work out their differences on Kashmir on their own”. The Boston Globe called the idea of
appointing Bill Clinton as an envoy to Kashmir “a mistake”.[514] President Obama subsequently appointed Richard Holbrooke as special envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan. President Asif Ali Zardari hoped that Holbrooke would help mediate to resolve the Kashmir issue. Kashmir was later removed from Holbrooke’s mandate. “Eliminating ... Kashmir from his job description ... is seen as a significant diplomatic concession to India that reflects increasingly warm ties between the country and the United States,” The Washington Post noted in a report. Brajesh Mishra, India’s former national security adviser, was quoted in the same report as saying that “No matter what government is in place, India is not going to relinquish control of Jammu and Kashmir”. “That is written in stone and cannot be changed.” According to The Financial Times, India has warned Obama that he risks “barking up the wrong tree” if he seeks to broker a settlement between Pakistan and India over Kashmir. In July 2009, US Assistant Secretary of State Robert O. Blake, Jr. stated that the United States had no plans to appoint any special envoy to settle the dispute, calling it an issue which needed to be sorted out bilaterally by India and Pakistan. According to Dawn this will be interpreted in Pakistan as an endorsement of India’s position on Kashmir that no outside power has any role in this dispute. In 2002, former US President, Bill Clinton described Kashmir as “the most dangerous place in the world.”[523] He averted a nuclear war between India and Pakistan over the issue of Kashmir according to former US Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott. Talbott reveals in his book Engaging India: Diplomacy, Democracy and the Bomb that India and Pakistan came very close to a nuclear war in 1999. According to Talbott, before Clinton met with Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif in 1999 to discuss the issue, US national security adviser Sandy Berger told Clinton that he could be heading into “the single most important meeting with a foreign leader of his entire presidency”. India and Pakistan conducted nuclear tests in 1998 and the two countries each hold significant numbers of nuclear warheads. India and Pakistan fought two wars over the issue of Kashmir in 1947 and 1965. These two neighbours came dangerously close to a third war during the Kargil conflict in 1999. good. And when Quinny plays like he did tonight he’s extremely difficult to bowl to.” While man-of-the-match De Kock sealed the win with his dazzling strokeplay, South Africa’s bowlers played a significant role by restricting Pakistan to 240 for eight despite an aggressive 70 by Fakhar Zaman. While Zaman was at the crease, Pakistan were on course for a big total. He was fourth out after a 73-ball innings when the total was 128 in the 25th over. But the scoring rate slowed after his dismissal, with only 49 runs scored in the next 15 overs. “Our top three batters got starts and we wanted them to capitalise,” said Pakistan stand-in
captain Shoaib Malik, who has temporarily taken the role from Sarfraz Ahmed after the wicketkeeper was banned for making a racist remark about Andile Phehlukwayo. “White-ball cricket is all about the first three batters.” Malik congratulated opening batsman Imam-ulHaq, who was named man ing day by day,” said Malik. of the series after scoring 271 runs at an average of 54.20 in five innings. “He is improv- www.dawn.com
Charter.Resolutions passed under Chapter VI of UN charter are considered non binding and have no mandatory enforceability as opposed to the resolutions passed under Chapter VII. On 24 January 1957 the UN Security Council reaffirmed the 1948 resolution. The Security Council, reaffirming its previous resolution to the effect, “that the final disposition of the state of Jammu and Kashmir will be made in accordance with the will of the people expressed through the democratic method of a free and impartial plebiscite conducted under the auspices of United Nations,” further declared that any action taken by the Constituent Assembly formed in Kashmir “ would not constitute disposition of the state in accordance with the above principles.” In March 2001, the then Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan during his visit to India and Pakistan, remarked that Kashmir resolutions are only advisory recommendations and comparing with those on East Timor and Iraq was like comparing apples and oranges, since those resolutions were passed under chapter VII, which make it enforceable by UNSC. In 2003, then Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf said Pakistan was willing to consider alternative bilateral options to resolve the dispute other than solely UN resolutions. In 2010, United States Ambassador to India, Timothy J. Roemer said that Kashmir is an ‘internal’ issue of India and not to be discussed on international level rather it should be solved by bilateral talks between India and Pakistan. He said, “The (US) President ( Barack Obama), I think was very articulate on this issue of Kashmir. This is an internal issue for India.” India alleges that Pakistan failed to fulfill the pre-conditions by withdrawing its troops from the Kashmir region as was required under the same U.N. resolution of 13 August 1948 which discussed the plebiscite. Separatist Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani said: “First of all when they say Kashmir is an internal issue, it is against the reality. The issue of Jammu and Kashmir is an international issue and it should be solved. As long as promises made to us are not fulfilled, this issue will remain unsolved.” www. en.wikipedia.org
De Kock assault sinks Pakistan in ODI series decider
Opening batsman Quinton de Kock launched an assault on Pakistan’s bowlers to set up a series-clinching win for South Africa in the fifth and final one-day international (ODI) at Newlands on Wednesday. De Kock slammed 83 off 58 balls as South Africa chased down a target of 241 with seven wickets and ten overs to spare to seal a 3-2 series win. “Quinny made it easy for the rest of the batters,” said South African captain Faf du Plessis, who said he was “extremely happy” with the way his team had played. “Our best performance came tonight in a crunch game,” said Du Plessis. “The bowling was excellent and the fielding was really
