2 Indian aircraft violating Pakistani airspace shot down; pilot arrested
P
akistan Air Force (PAF) on Wednesday — a day after India violated the Line of Control (LoC) — undertook strikes across the LoC from Pakistani airspace. “The sole purpose of this action was to demonstrate our right, will and capability for self defence. We do not wish to escalate, but are
fully prepared if forced into that paradigm,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) said in a statement. Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor, the director general (DG) of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), confirmed the development via a tweet, adding that “in response to PAF strikes this morning, as re-
leased by MoFA, IAF [Indian Air Force] crossed [the] LoC.” “[The] PAF shot down two Indian aircraft inside Pakistani airspace. One of the aircraft fell inside AJ&K [Azad Jammu and Kashmir] while [the] other fell inside IoK [Indian occupied Kashmir]. One Indian pilot arrested by troops on ground
while two in the area.” While addressing a press conference an hour after his tweet, Maj Gen Ghafoor said that another pilot has been arrested. ”Our ground forces arrested two pilots; one of them was injured and has been shifted to CMH. Source: dawn.com

All wars are miscalculated, no one knows where they lead: PM Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday afternoon addressed the nation and decision makers in neighbouring India to reiterate his message of peace and offer for dialogue. The address came after Pakistan Air Force (PAF) successfully targeted non-military targets across the Line of Control earlier in the day to demonstrate Pakistan’s aggressive capabilities, and shot down two Indian Air Force jets after they crossed the LoC. An Indian Air Force pilot is currently in the captivity of Pakistan’s armed forces. He has been identified as Wing Commander Abhi Nandan. “I wanted to take the nation into confidence over the developments since yesterday morning,” the premier said as he began his address.“We offered peace to India after what happened in Pulwama. I understood the pain of the families [who lost family members in Pulwama]. I have visited hospitals and seen the pain of people affected by violence. We have lost 70,000 of our own and I know what those who are left behind and those who are injured feel. “[On that basis], we offered India that we would cooperate.
It is not in Pakistan’s interest to let our land be used for terrorism. There is no dispute there. Yet, I had still feared that India would [ignore the offer and] still take action, and I had therefore warned India against aggression and said we will be compelled to respond because no sovereign country can allow that [violation of its sovereignty].” “When India stuck yesterday morning, the army chief and I spoke. We did not respond in haste — we did not have a complete assessment of the damage cause and it would have been irresponsible on our part as it may have resulted in casualties on their side. Once we assessed the damage caused, we were ready to take action. “The sole purpose of our action [today] was to convey that if you can come into our country, we can do the same. That was the only purpose of what we did,” he said, referring to the engagement of non-military targets across the LoC. “Two of their MiGs were shot down [by Pakistani forces] after they crossed over into our territory,” he noted. “It is important where we go from here. From here, it is imperative that we use our heads and act with wisdom,” he continued. “All wars are miscalculated, and no one knows where they lead to. World War I was supposed to end in weeks, it took six years. Similarly, the US never expected the war on terrorism to last 17 years. “I ask India: with the weapons you have and the weapons we have, can we really afford such a miscalculation? If this escalates, things will no longer be in my control or in Modi’s,” the prime minister continued. “I once again invite you: we are ready. We understand the grief India has suffered in Pulwama and are ready for any sort of dialogue on terrorism. I reiterate that better sense should prevail. “Let’s sit together and settle this with talks,” the prime minister concluded. Source: dawn.com

Notary Public Immigration Commercial airlines remain grounded at Consultant Pakistani airports
Though Pakistani airspace has been partially restored, starting with Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport of Karachi, according to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), commercial airlines either remain grounded in Pakistan or are staying away till more clarity emerges. The aviation authority had said more details would follow after announcing the reopening of the airspace, but as of 11pm PST, there was little to no activity in Pakistani skies.
Earlier, the aviation authority had announced that Pakistani airspace had been shut after the director general of Inter-Services Public Relations, the military’s media arm, acknowledged the closure of Pakistan’s airspace due to the prevailing security situation. At the time of CAA’s announcement on closure, Pakistani airspace, according to Flight Radar 24 — a global flight tracking service — was almost entirely empty. Source: dawn.com
Hundreds of families living in the most vulnerable areas along the restive Line of Control (LoC) in Azad Jammu and Kashmir were reported to have moved to the rear areas, officials and residents said, as three more civilians were wounded on Wednesday amid unrelenting ceasefire violations by Indian troops. Samina Bibi, 25, and her 3-year-old daughter Kanwal were injured in Manda village and Nasreen Bibi was injured and a mosque was damaged in Ghee Kot village of Khilana sector in the early hours of Wednesday, said Ahmed Raza Qadri, AJK minister for civil de-
fence. Khilana is located towards the right of Chakothi-Uri crossing point at the heavily militarised LoC that splits the disputed Himalayan region between Pakistan and India. Residents said the exchange of heavy fire continued in Khilana, Chakothi and adjoining areas throughout the night and also on Wednesday in intervals. Shabbir Ahmed, a resident of Chakothi, said his was among many families from the town which had moved to Hattian Bala or Muzaffarabad. He said only those families had stayed back which had concrete bunkers built within or along their houses.

Hundreds of AJK families relocate as Indian ceasefire violations continue along LoC Officials said the federal government had sanctioned a scheme for construction of community protection bunkers in the vulnerable areas along LoC. In 2018, a total of 678 such bunkers were built under the supervision of the Pakistan Army out of the planned 926. Work on the rest is under progress, officials said. Qadri claimed that the morale of the people living along the LoC was very high and a vast majority of them did not want to leave their homes. “However, we have requested the people inhabiting the most exposed areas to move back until the situation improves,” he said. According to him,
as many as 61 families from different villages of Chakothi had quit their homes and 21 of them had been accommodated in the buildings of two educational institutions in Hattian Bala. Elsewhere, he said, 18 families in Bhimber district and 12 families in Kotli district had also been relocated in government buildings. Source: dawn.com
Govt, army brief parliamentary leaders on Indian aggression at in-camera session Parliamentary leaders were briefed by the country’s top civil and military leadership on the situation on Pakistan’s eastern border at an in-camera session held in Parliament House on Wednesday evening. The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) had today undertaken strikes across the LoC from Pakistani airspace and shot down two Indian aircraft in the ensuing action. The strikes were carried out a day after India violated the Line of Control (LoC). Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor, the direc-
tor general (DG) of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) provided the military’s input to the meeting participants.Army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa was also in attendance, having accompanied NA Speaker Asad Qaiser and Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani to the meeting after the three separately discussed the national security situation. Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi briefed the opposition on the government’s foreign policy strategy. The participants were also briefed about the decisions taken
during the National Command Authority meeting earlier in the day. “The forum unanimously expressed that they stand united against any aggression against Pakistan and will support the Govt and it’s institutions unconditionally,” said a statement issued by the National Assembly Secretariat after the meeting. The participants “also expressed hope that those who want peace and stability will prevail as war is not an option but a failure of policy”, the press release added. Source: dawn.com

House Democrats pass bill blocking Trump-Kim summit ends early without Trump emergency funding for wall HANOI, reaching a deal: White House Vietnam -- U.S. President Don-
Democrats ignored a veto threat and rammed legislation through the House Tuesday that would stymie U.S. President Donald Trump’s bid for billions of extra dollars for his border wall, escalating a clash over whether he was abusing his powers to advance his paramount campaign pledge. The House’s 245-182 vote to block Trump’s national emergency declaration fell well below the two-thirds majority that would be needed to override his promised veto. Top Republicans worked to keep defections as low as possible -- 13 backed the Democrats’ resolution -- underscoring their desire to avoid a tally suggesting that Trump’s hold on lawmakers was weakening. The vote also throws the political hot potato to the Republican-run Senate, where there were already enough GOP defections to edge it to the cusp of passage. Vice-President Mike Pence used a lunch with Republican senators at the Capitol to try keeping them aboard, citing a dangerous crisis at the border, but there were no signs he’d succeeded. “I personally couldn’t handicap the outcome at this point,” said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who’s planning a vote within the next three weeks. He even said Republicans remained uncertain about the legality of Trump’s move, telling reporters, “We’re in the process of weighing that.” Senate passage would force Trump’s first veto, which the House vote demonstrated that Congress would surely fail to overturn. But the showdown was forcing Republicans to cast uncomfortable votes pitting their support for a president wildly popular with GOP voters against fears that his expansive use of emergency powers would invite future Democratic presidents to do likewise for their own pet policies. House Republicans who joined all voting Democrats to support the Democratic resolution included moderates from competitive districts like Fred Upton of Michigan and libertarian-leaning conservatives like Thomas Massie from Kentucky. The White House wrote to lawmakers formally threatening to veto the legislation. The letter said blocking the emergency declaration would “undermine the administration’s ability to respond effectively to the ongoing crisis at the Southern Border.”
Republicans said Democrats were driven by politics and a desire to oppose Trump at every turn, and said Trump had clear authority to declare an emergency to protect the country. They also defended the president’s claims of a security crisis along the boundary with Mexico, which he has said is ravaged by drug smugglers, human traffickers and immigrants trying to sneak into the U.S. illegally.“We are at war on the Southern border with the drug cartels,” said Rep. Pete Olson, R-Texas. Trump has asserted that barriers would stop drugs from Mexico from entering the U.S. In fact, government figures show that 90 per cent of drugs intercepted from Mexico are caught at ports of entry, not remote areas where barriers would be constructed. Democrats said Republicans repeatedly accused former President Barack Obama of flouting the Constitution, which gives Congress control over spending, but are ignoring Trump’s effort to do the same. “Is your oath of office to Donald Trump, or is your oath of office to the Constitution?” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., asked Republicans.Trump’s push for the wall reflected a continuation of the anti-immigrant views that helped fuel his election, some Democrats said. Trump used a 1976 law to declare a national emergency and ordered the shift of $3.6 billion from military construction projects to wall building. Citing other powers, he intends to shift another $3.1 billion from Defence Department anti-drug efforts and a fund that collects seized assets. The money would be used to build steel barriers up to 30 feet tall and other barriers and for “law enforcement efforts,” said a White House statement. Source: CTV News
Pullout and guarantees dominate talks with US: Taliban spokesman
Two main issues being discussed in the highlevel talks between the Taliban and the United States in Qatar are US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan and assurances that the country not be used for further attacks in the future, a Taliban spokesman told Al Jazeera. At the site of the second day of the talks in Doha, Al Jazeera’s Stefanie Dekker asked Suhail Shaheen what guarantees the Taliban could offer to end their military operations once an agreement is reached. “When the occupation has ended, there is full withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan and there is an Afghan-inclusive Islamic government in the country, I think there is no need for military operation and war,” Shaheen told Al Jazeera. “So, there will be sustainable peace in the country, and all the military people and our people, they will be included in a national army,” he added. One of the founders of the Taliban, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, is attending the talks for the first time as the new head of the Taliban team. He is the highest-level representative to take part in negotiations with a US delegation led by Zalmay Khalilzad, the US special envoy for peace.
Khalilzad said “This could be a significant moment.” in a tweet before talks began on Monday. This meeting is the latest in a series of talks between Khalilzad and Taliban representatives and interested parties in a number of countries in the region since the US envoy was named in September. In six days of meetings in Doha last month, Khalilzad said “significant progress” was made on two vital issues, a potential troop withdrawal, as well the guarantees the Taliban will provide not to allow fighter groups to flourish in the country. The Taliban have repeatedly refused to negotiate with the Afghan government, calling it a “puppet” of the US. Source: Al-Jazeera
ald Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un abruptly cut short their second summit Thursday without reaching an agreement, a stunning collapse of talks that caused both leaders to leave their Vietnam meeting early and cancel a planned signing ceremony. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said the leaders had a “very good and constructive meeting” and discussed ways to advance denuclearization and economic driven concepts.” She said their teams looked forward to meeting “in the future,” but offered no specific time frame. Both leaders motorcades roared away from the downtown Hanoi summit site within minutes of each other after both a lunch and the signing ceremony were scuttled. Trump’s end-of-summit news conference was moved up and White House aides said he would address the sudden change in plans. The breakdown came just hours after Trump and Kim appeared to inch toward normalizing relations between their still technically-warring nations as the American leader tamped down expectations that their talks would yield an agreement by the reclusive country to take concrete steps toward ending its nu-
clear program. In something of a role reversal, Trump deliberately ratcheted down some of the pressure on Pyongyang, abandoning his fiery rhetoric and declaring he was in “no rush. We just want to do the right deal.” Kim, for his part, when asked whether he was ready to denuclearize, said “If I’m not willing to do that I won’t be here right now.” Furthering the spirit of optimism, the leaders had seemed to find a point of agreement moments later when Kim was asked if the U.S. may open a liaison office in North Korea. Trump declared it “not a bad idea” and Kim called it “welcomable.” Such an office would mark the first U.S. presence in North Korea. Source: CTV News
A United Nations donors conference for Yemen has raised about $2.6bn of the $4bn needed to address the humanitarian crisis in the country, where about 80,000 children below the age of five have already died of hunger, UN officials said on Tuesday. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were the main donors, pledging $500m each and contributing to a 30-percent increase in total pledges from last year. But the two Gulf countries, backed by the United States and the United Kingdom, are also active participants in the ongoing conflict, which has caused what the UN describes as the “world’s worst humanitarian crisis”. Since 2015, a Saudi-led coalition has been carrying out air strikes against the Houthi rebels in Yemen to reinstall the government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi. The Houthis have seized control of the capital Sanaa, the Hodeidah port and most of the northeastern part of the country. The war has caused a humanitarian emergency of catastrophic proportions, according to the UN, due to the blatant disregard for international humanitarian law by both parties. Nevertheless, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday praised the Gulf countries’ contributions and abstained from any criticism of their actions, despite requests from the media to clarify the contradiction in their positions as donors - as well as parties in the conflict. “This is a pledging conference and any contribution is welcome despite a country’s role in the war,” he said. Asked to comment on the ongoing UN investigations on war crimes allegedly committed by all parties in the conflict, Guterres said they would continue as expected. About 24 million people, 80 percent of the population, need humanitarian aid and protection, UN officials said at the conference. About 20 million people have no access to food, out of which about 10 million Yemenis are just one step away from famine, according to UN figures. Since last year, due to the continued fighting and the dire economy, an additional two million people became engulfed in Yemen’s humanitarian crisis. Children have borne the brunt of the conflict. About 80,000 children below the age of five have already died of starvation, according to Guterres, who
was quoting from a report. Eight children a day are killed as they go about their daily activities or other conflictrelated causes, according to UNICEF, the UN’s agency for child protections. About 360,000 children are suffering from severe acute malnutrition with life-threatening consequences. According to Geert Cappelaere, UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, a child dies every 10 minutes in Yemen of a preventable disease because of the lack of essential health services. More than two million children are not able to go to school. “Today Yemen is the worst place on earth for a child,” Cappelaere told Al Jazeera. “I invite the parties to think of their own children when they sit at the negotiating table next time.” Addressing the media on Monday, Guterres admitted that the humanitarian response was not enough to address the Yemeni crisis without the parties’ serious engagement in the peace negotiations. “There cannot be a humanitarian solution to humanitarian problems,” he said. The UN chief admitted that the implementation of the agreement reached between the Yemeni government and the Houthis in December had met “obstacles”. The UN-brokered Stockholm Agreement signed in December 2018 and Security Council resolution 2451 endorsing that agreement, called for a ceasefire in the Hodeidah governorate and a mechanism for exchanging prisoners, among other confidence-building measures. However, little progress has been achieved since the parties met in Sweden, each accusing the other of not abiding by the agreement. Source: Al-Jazeera

Singh cements leadership with B.C. by Canada ‘gravely concerned’ about election win but NDP loses Outremont India-Pakistan tension: Freeland
OTTAWA -- Jagmeet Singh tightened his shaky grip on the reins of the NDP Monday by winning a do-or-die federal byelection in British Columbia. But the challenge he now faces in reviving the party’s flagging fortunes in time for this fall’s national election was underscored by the NDP’s simultaneous loss to the Liberals in Outremont, the Montreal riding that served as a launching pad for the orange wave that swept Quebec in 2011. With most polls reporting, Singh captured Burnaby South with more than 38 per cent of the vote, ahead of the Liberal contender with 26 per cent and the Conservative with 22 per cent. Had he lost, Singh would almost certainly have faced demands to resign as leader. Going into Monday’s byelection, many New Democrats -- including Singh’s predecessor, Tom Mulcair -- had questioned how Singh could lead the party in the October federal election if he couldn’t win a seat for himself. However, the loss of Outremont cast a pall over Singh’s victory celebration. Lawyer Rachel Bendayan reclaimed the riding for the Liberals with 42 per cent of the vote, even as the governing party struggles with the fallout from allegations that the Prime Minister’s Office improperly pressured former attorney general Jody Wilson-Raybould to halt criminal proceedings against Montreal engineering giant SNCLavalin. The NDP’s Julia Sanchez captured 27 per cent. Outremont was a longtime Liberal stronghold until 2007, when Mulcair scored a byelection upset for the NDP, creating a beachhead for the party in Quebec, from which it eventually went on to sweep the province in 2011 and vault into official Opposition status for the first time in party history. Since those heady days, the party has fallen back to its traditional third-party status. It won just 44 seats in the 2015 election, 16 of them in Quebec. Monday’s loss of Outremont gives credence to polls that suggest the party risks being wiped out altogether in Quebec this fall. Vancouver NDP MP Jenny Kwan acknowledged the loss of Outremont was “a disappointment.” “What we’re going to do, of course, is learn from this experience and then we’re going to redouble our efforts to ensure that the people of Quebec know we are there for them,” she said at Singh’s victory party. In a third byelection Monday, the Conservatives handily hung on to the Ontario riding of York-Simcoe, which had been held since 2004 by former Conservative cabinet minister Peter Van Loan. Scot Davidson took 53 per cent of the vote for the Tories, well ahead of Liberal Shaun Tanaka with 30 per cent. There were, however, a couple of potentially bad omens for the Conservatives in Monday’s results. The breakaway People’s Party of Canada,
created last summer by one-time Tory leadership contender Maxime Bernier, faced its first electoral test in the byelections and results suggest it could be a spoiler that deprives the Conservatives of victory in tight contests come the fall. While the fledgling party won less than two per cent of the vote in Outremont and YorkSimcoe, it did surprisingly well in Burnaby South, where Laura-Lynn Tyler Thompson won more than 11 per cent of the vote after running on a “Canadians first” campaign that was denounced as anti-immigration and racist by some supporters of rival candidates. And in Outremont, the Conservative candidate ran a distant fifth with just over six per cent of the vote, behind the Liberals, NDP, Greens, and Bloc Quebecois. The Greens, who’ve watched their vote share increase in a number of other recent byelection contests, came third in Outremont with some 13 per cent of the vote -- up 10 points from the 2015 election. However, the party’s vote share was down slightly in York-Simcoe, at less than three per cent. The Greens did not run a candidate in Burnaby South, as a courtesy to Singh. Singh’s win was all the sweeter for the fact that Burnaby South was not a natural home or a safe seat for a former Ontario provincial politician. New Democrat Kennedy Stewart, now mayor of Vancouver, won the riding by just over 500 votes ahead of the Liberals in 2015. His victory will give Singh some muchneeded visibility in the House of Commons in the run-up to the general election and will help put to rest grumbling within NDP ranks about his underwhelming performance since being chosen leader almost 18 months ago. But his problems go well beyond his low profile on the main stage of federal politics. Singh has faced criticism about his seeming unfamiliarity with federal issues and his handling of internal caucus discipline. Under his leadership, the NDP has plunged to its lowest standings in public opinion polls since 2000, when it won just 13 seats. The party is mired in debt and its fundraising results have been dismal. As well, at least 11 of the 44 MPs who won seats for the party in 2015 have announced they won’t seek reelection this fall. While the Liberals could celebrate victory in Outremont, the party’s vote share dropped by about seven percentage points in each of the other two byelections -- at least in part likely due to the fallout from the SNC-Lavalin affair. In Burnaby South, the ruling party was likely also hurt by the fact that it dumped its original candidate after she identified Singh as being of “Indian descent” and contrasted herself as the “only” Chinese candidate in a riding with a large Chinese-Canadian population. Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland is urging India and Pakistan to “exercise maximum restraint” as tensions over the disputed Kashmir region mount. Freeland issued a statement Wednesday afternoon calling on both countries to “avoid any further military escalation” following Pakistan’s shooting down of two Indian military aircraft in response to Indian airstrikes. “Canada is gravely concerned about rising tensions between India and Pakistan,” Freeland said. Dialogue … is needed to identify a durable diplomatic solution and maintain peace and security in the region.” Pakistan’s military said Wednesday that it had shot down two Indian planes in its airspace and taken one pilot into custody. The attack came one day after Indian fighter jets conducted an airstrike in Pakistan. Hostilities between the two countries have been increasing since a suicide attack in Kashmir killed more than 40 Indian soldiers earlier this month. India’s airstrikes this week represented the country’s first at-
tack inside Pakistan since 1971. Kashmir is a mountainous region on the border of India and Pakistan, both of which have claimed ownership of it for decades. Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan called Wednesday for peace talks between the two nations. The Indian government’s response to Wednesday’s developments has been to say that one of its planes was “lost” with its pilot “missing in action.” India has also claimed that it shot down an aircraft from Pakistan, which Pakistan has denied. Violent winds and blowing snow led to whiteout conditions in Southern Ontario on Monday and contributed to a pair of massive pileups involving nearly 100 vehicles. The first collision, on Highway 400 south of Barrie, Ont., involved about 70 vehicles, according to Sgt. Kerry Schmidt of the Ontario Provincial Police’s Highway Safety Division. There were no major injuries in the collisions, but 11 people were taken to hospital. “(The crash was) significant in terms of vehicles involved but nothing serious in terms of injuries,” Schmidt told reporters at the scene. The pileup closed down the lanes of Highway 400 in both directions for much of the day, but have since reopened. Barrie Transit buses were brought to the scene to keep people warm and to transport them to the Georgian Downs casino, which served as a makeshift collision reporting centre for police, tow-truck drivers and those involved in the collision. Dr. Chris Martin, an emergency room doctor at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in Barrie said most of
the crash victims arrived to the facility with bruises and strains from whiplash. One person suffered a fracture, he added. “Considering one was a tanker truck loaded with diesel, this could have been way worse,” he said. Among those lucky to be safe is Akeem Young, who found himself caught in the middle of the pileup. “My car is crushed. Both sides, front and back,” he told CTV Toronto. “My car slipped so I went right inside the truck.” Source: ctvnews.ca
Three people were rushed to hospital following what firefighters called a “serious crash” at the foot of Vancouver’s Burrard Street Bridge. The crash occurred around 6 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Burrard and Pacific streets. Few details have been provided, but Vancouver’s fire chief posted on Twitter that three patients were transported to hospital and two of them are in serious condition. The driver had to be extricated from a silver Dodge minivan that came to a stop in the centre of a median.
A police sergeant told CTV News the driver of the van had been travelling south and struck two pedestrians. Four ambulances, several police cruisers and a couple of fire trucks were seen blocking the scene of the collision. Traffic was getting through but backups were visible for several blocks. The silver van could be seen from CTV’s Chopper 9, with noticeable damage on the driver’s front side. The driver’s side door was completely off the vehicle, likely from the extrication of the driver.

FAITH Narrated Abu Huraira:Allah’s Apostle said, “When the Imam says: ‘Ghair-il-Maghdubi ‘Alaihim Walad-Dallin (i.e. not the path of those who earn Your Anger, nor the path of those who went astray (1.7)), then you must say, ‘Ameen’, for if one’s utterance of ‘Ameen’ coincides with that of the angels, then his past sins will be forgiven.” al-Bukhari Book 60 Hadith 2
Connecting to Allah Through His Names and Attributes
By: Amal Al-Sibai Imam Hussain is quoted as saying, Allah, what did he find, he who lost You? And what did he lose, he who found You? Truly, he has failed who is contented with other than You.” What did Imam Hussain know that we do not know? Or have forgotten. What can we take away from this observation made by this grandson of Prophet Muhammad (saw), a grandson who knew him intimately from his childhood? If we do not always easily connect with Allah, could it be that we do not really know Him? How can we improve this connection?
“O
Knowing Who is Allah
When we think more deeply about the first pillar of Islam —which is the foundation upon which our whole faith is built— we’re reminded that it is to testify that there is no God but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. If we are to be Muslims who understand the foundations of our faith, then we must recognize that this proclamation of faith should be based on accessing the divine knowledge which is already provided for us, at our very fingertips, in the pages of the Qur’an. Hand in hand with improving our communication, the believer must first know Allah. Allah instructs His Prophet(saw) and every believer in the Holy Qur’an: So know, [O Muhammad], that there is no deity except Allah[Surah Al- Muhammad, 47:19] It is incumbent upon every Muslim to learn and seek knowledge of Allah, the sole Creator and Lord of all, the One who has revealed to mankind Holy Books so as to lead us to Him. Allah has sent us the Holy Qur’an which is Nûr, the light that shows us the way, and Shifâ’, cure for the hearts, and Furqân which helps us differentiate between truth and falsehood, what is permissible from what is forbidden. The Qur’an is also Huda, guidance, which leads us to our Creator and helps us know Allah better, so we can worship Allah better and ultimately be of the successful ones who will enter Paradise. How does Allah Tell us Who He is? When reading the Holy Qur’an, you will find, every few verses, mention of Allah’s Divine Names. Allah has revealed to us His Names and Attributes so that we can connect with him on a higher intellectual, emotional, and spiritual level. How many times have certain verses been concluded with statements such as: Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful [Surah Al-Mâ’idah, 5:39] and Allah is Ever Knowing and Aware [ Surah Al-Nisâ’, 4:35] and Indeed your Lord is Knowing and Wise [Surah Al-‘Ahzâb, 33:1] Allah has referred to Himself as Al-Rahîm, The All-Merciful, in the Holy Qur’an roughly 227 times, Al-Rahmân, The All-Compassionate, 170 times, and Al-Ghafûr, The Forgiver, 91 times. The Divine Names and Attributes of Allah appear again and again on almost every page of the Glorious Qur’an. With so much emphasis placed in Allah’s Holy Book on His Names and Attributes, I believe that all Muslims should take it upon themselves to memorize, understand these Names and Attributes, and more importantly to conduct themselves in ways that are befitting to being servants of Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Learning What Allah Means by the Names which He Attributes to Himself Jeffrey Lang has written in his book, “The Divine Names are, for Muslims, a means of turning towards God’s infinite radiance. Through their recollection, believers attempt to unveil and reorient their souls towards the ultimate source of all. A knowledge of them is essential if one is to comprehend the relationship between God and man.”[1]
that Allah is The Provider (Al-Razzâq), you do not seek provision from anyone other than Him. Of course, you work hard to earn a halal income, while putting your trust in Allah, The Provider, Al–Razzâq. It includes calling upon Allah by His Beautiful Names, Al-Asmâ’ Al-Husnâ. You might say, “O Most Merciful (Ya Rahmân), have mercy on me”; “O All-Forgiving (Ya Ghafûr), forgive me.” What is the Count of Allah’s Names? One must point out that Allah’s Names are not limited to 99. Regarding the above quoted hadîth from Abu Huraira, the scholar of Hadîth, Imam Al-Nawawi, explains in Sharh Sahîh Muslim, “The scholars are unanimously agreed that this Hadith does not mean that Allah has only ninety-nine names, or that He does not have any other names apart from these ninety-nine. Rather what the Hadith means is that whoever learns these ninety-nine will enter Paradise. The point is that one may enter Paradise by learning them, not that the number is limited to these names.” Why is Surah Al-Ikhlâs so Special in Islam? To increase our faith and to help us comprehend more about Allah, we should read several times each day Surah Al-Ikhlâs and meditate on it. Ask yourself how its verses are so central to understanding Allah: Say, ‘He is Allah (who is) One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge, He neither begets nor is born, Nor is there to Him any equivalent. [Surah Al-Ikhlâs, 112:1-4] It is reported that the Jews had said to the Messenger of Allah (swt), “Describe your Lord for us.” For that reason, Allah revealed the above Surah Al-Ikhlas.
Aisha narrated the following, “The Prophet (saw) sent a man as the commander of a war expedition and he used to lead his companions in prayer with recitation [of the Qur’an], and he would complete his recitation with the recitation of ‘Say: He is Allah, One…’ [Surah Al-Ikhlas] in each rak`ah. So when they returned they mentioned that to the Prophet(saw) and he said, “Ask him why he does that.” So they asked him and he said, ‘Because it is the description of Al–Rahmân (Allah) and I love to recite it. So the Prophet (saw) said, “Inform him that Allah the Most High loves him.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari) Furthermore, Prophet Muhammad (saw) described this Surah (112) as equivalent to [the weight of] one-third of the Qur’an because it explicitly confirms the oneness and uniqueness of Allah. It also contains two of Allah’s Beautiful Names: Al-Ahad which means “The Only One” or “The Unique,” and Al-Samad which means “The Satisfier of All Needs” or “The Eternal Refuge.” An Invitation to Get Involved To embark on the path to a better understanding of Al-Asmâ’ Al-Husnâ —that is, Allah’s Beautiful Names and Attributes— is truly a noble and rewarding endeavor. That is the idea behind starting a series to study the Beautiful Names of Allah. We aim to learn and explore, in-depth, the meanings of Al-Asmâ’ Al-Husnâ, and the implications in our lives which each Name has. We will be running a series of articles, an article every two weeks insha’Allah, to discuss the meaning of one or more of Allah’s Beautiful Names.Source: aljumuah.com
Knowledge of and belief in Allah’s Names and Attributes —as He revealed them in His Holy Book or as have been mentioned by our Prophet(saw) in authentic Hadîth is fundamental to tawhîd. Tawhîd —Allah’s uniqueness as merciful Lord in all that exists— is the fundamental underpinning of Islam, and all else is attached to it. Shaykh Yasir Qadhi has said that there is no knowledge or subject of study more noble, more blessed, more sacred, or more exalted than seeking knowledge of Allah’s Names and Attributes. How can we truly and unwaveringly love Allah if we do not know who He is? How can we adequately fear Allah if we do not know who He is? How can we put our complete trust in Allah if we do not know who He is? Knowledge of Allah is a central tenant of our faith. Does Allah Give Us a Term for the Concept of His Names and Attributes? There are four verses in the Holy Qur’an which mention that Allah has Al-Asmâ’ AlHusnâ, The Beautiful Names, and we list those four here.{And to Allah belong the best names [Al-Asmâ’ Al-Husnâ], so invoke Him by them} (Surah Al-A’râf, 7:180) {Say, “Call upon Allah or call upon the Most Merciful (Al-Rahman). “A Journey Into Islam”.... A Perfect Way To Present Religion Of Peace !!!
By:Farhan Haider On Saturday January 26th, Richmond’s Az-Zahraa Islamic Centre opened its doors for it’s Eighth Annual A Journey Into Islam exhibition and open house. The event once again attracted over 300 guests who were invited to gain a better understanding of the faith in a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. Visitors were encouraged and welcomed to ask any questions they had, and to establish fruitful dialogue with members and scholars of the local Muslim community. The event was attended by a diverse group of people from various professional and backgrounds including public officials, academics and members of various faith groups. Hon. Joe Peschisolido, the member parliament was also present. This origin of the event was inspired by the youth of the community who were being asked a lot of questions by their friends and colleagues as there were misconceptions about their faith. Over eight years later, it continues to be organized and led by the youth with the support of other members of the community. The purpose of the event is to provide an opportunity for guests to become familiar with the core
beliefs and practices of the Islamic faith in an engaging and comprehensible manner. The evening began with an opportunity to observe the evening prayers in the Masjid. The formal program started with recitation of Quran and welcoming address delivered by Sheikh Murtaza Bachoo, Religious and Spiritual consultant at Az Zahraa Islamic Centre. This year’s theme was ‘Women in Islam’ Women have historically played a critical role in the development and expansion of the religion and this year’s keynote speaker Sr Fatemah Meghji helped to dispel the many myths that exist and to showcase Islam’s unique and holistic perspective on women as human beings. Following a gourmet dinner, guests were invited to participate in a guided tour of the Masjid along with visiting the various exhibits which included Jihad, the Qur’an, Hijab, Islamic Dietary restrictions, the Pilgrimage to Mecca, an Islamic Art Museum, and important people in the fait. This event is a great example to integrate with different religious groups and to present a real and softer image of Islam.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Javad Zarif resigns
A key player in the Iranian government for years, Javad Zarif announced he’s stepping down as foreign minister. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif stepped down on Monday, announcing his resignation on Instagram. “I am apologising you for all the shortcomings ... in the past years during my time as foreign minister... I thank the Iranian nation and officials,” he wrote on his Instagram page jzarif_ir. There was no immediate reason giving for the resignation. Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency cited a spokesman, Abbas Mousavi, confirming Zarif had resigned. Zarif was appointed minister of foreign affairs in August 2013, two years before Iran agreed to scale back its uranium enrichment programme and pledged not to develop nuclear weapons in return for the lifting of in-
hard-line Revolutionary Guard, gave a speech earlier this month saying he believed Iranian people would spit on Zarif and other Iranian officials - including President Hassan Rouhani and member of parliament Ali Larijani - who backed the nuclear deal. “Mr Hassan Rouhani, Mr Zarif and Mr Larijani, go to hell,” Abbasi said at a demonstration in the Iranian city of Karaj. A staunch Rouhani ally, Zarif - typically collected - appeared visibly frustrated at times during a recent security conference in Munich. Already lashed by criticism over the collapsing nuclear deal and renewed tensions with the US, the relatively moderate Rouhani faces anger from clerics, hard-line forces, and an ever-growing disaffected public. Rouhani is particularly vulnerable because of the economic crisis assailing the country’s currency, which has hurt ordinary Iranians Visibly frustrated Hassan Abbasi, a retired general in Iran’s and emboldened critics to openly call for his

modern world. Al Jazeera: Why did you decide to write this book? Abdullah Anas: I want to challenge the myths and misconceptions around the Afghan jihad. With my experience, I feel that it’s my responsibility to help anyone - laymen, imams, journalists, academics, politicians - understand the history of the Afghan jihad because it is misunderstood on all levels all over the world. Many people, especially the younger generation, believe jihad started with the Taliban and al-Qaeda in 9/11. This is not true. I wrote to counter the false narratives that came about after 9/11, which depicted Afghanistan as the training ground for extremists. After 2001, so-called “experts” cropped up claiming that thousands of foreign extremists had trained in camps in Afghanistan and were returning home to commit terrorism. In reality, there were about 100 Arab Afghans, committed fighters, at any one time. Al Jazeera: What do you consider “jihad”? Anas: Jihad essentially means “a morally just war”. It’s Islam’s martial tradition, with a moral and ethical framework. It’s important to draw a distinction between jihadism - a modern concept that came about after 9/11 - and the original concept of jihad. The only legitimate jihad was during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan when people fought against colonialism and showed immense moral courage. Everything that came after this, including ... 9/11, was not jihad. Al-Qaeda and ISIS, Boko Haram and other bloody organisations have destroyed this noble concept by committing countless horrific crimes and calling it jihad. I challenge any man to see what good has ever come from alQaeda. Muslims are outraged by these groups that have distorted one of their most sacred concepts, and they are upset by the public’s lack of understanding about jihad. So, many people are understandably fearful, and the media hardly helps, only seeing jihad alongside criminals. Al Jazeera: Osama bin Laden was one of the first people you met in Afghanistan. What

A vocal supporter of the deal, Zarif has since come under pressure from more hard-line power blocs within the Islamic Republic who were opposed to the agreement, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Criticism of the accord has become more intense in recent months following US President Donald Trump’s decision in May to withdraw from the deal and reimpose sanctions on Tehran. Iranian FM Zarif says Israel ‘looking for war’ Trump’s decision prompted Iran’s currency, the rial, to crater fuelling sporadic nationwide protests.

Under the agreement, Iran limited its enrichment of uranium in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions. But the benefits of the deal never reached much of the Iranian public. Even before Trump pulled out from the accord in May 2018, uncertainty over its future caused the rial to plummet. www.aljazeera.com
Algerian who fought beside bin Laden: ‘I wanted to help Muslims’
Former fighter Abdullah Anas says it is important to separate between post 9/11 ‘jihadism’ and concept of ‘jihad’.
By Madeline Roache London, United Kingdom - Abdullah Anas sits upright, smiling and speaking clearly as he recalls his decision to join the “Afghan Arabs” during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan (1979-1989). “I didn’t even know where Afghanistan was on the map,” he says. “I was a country boy from Algeria, all I knew is I wanted to help Muslims.” For 10 years, Anas was one of the many Arabs who fought against the Soviet Union in Afghanistan, alongside the future icons of al-Qaeda’s global war, including the late Abdullah Azzam, Anas’s father-in-law, and Osama bin Laden. Anas later turned away from their movements, disagreeing with their political interpretations and plans for what they called a “global jihad”. He now lives in London, where he was granted political asylum. “Osama was shy, introverted and spoke very little - a man of few words. He talked when he needed to and chose his words carefully” Abdullah Anas, author and former fighter In his new memoir, To the Mountains: My life in Jihad from Algeria to Afghanistan, written with investigative journalist Tam Hussein, Anas traces the rise of this so-called “global jihadism”, beginning with the networks formed during the Soviet-Afghan War. Anas and Hussein spoke to Al Jazeera about the evolution of this fight and its role in the
was he like? Anas: I first met Osama in Islamabad in 1983, he was 26. He travelled from Jeddah to Islamabad just for the day to visit Sheikh Abdullah [Azzam] and drop off donations. Osama was shy, introverted and spoke very little - a man of few words. He talked when he needed to and chose his words carefully. It was clear he was someone who was used to being in control. I could tell he came from a family with high manners. I liked him. We met again a year later in Peshawar at Abdullah Azzam’s house, who at that time, was a star in the Muslim world. Osama was like his personal assistant, his host, driver and student. When Azzam stood up, Osama stood up, when Azzam sat down, Osama also sat down. He was completely under the order of Azzam, waiting for any advice, teaching and instructions. It’s not like Osama was poor and needed the work, he came from a wealthy family. He saw in Azzam a mentor. By late 1988, after about four years of working with us, he started to distance himself from us as he began to come under the influence of more radical groups. Al Jazeera: How would you characterise the roots of “global jihadism”? Tam Hussein: The roots of global jihadism are not in Arab culture. They partly stem from an idea of the Afghan jihad, that has been distorted by political convulsions experienced throughout the Arab world in recent times. The Afghan-Soviet war is a significant symbol in the Arab world because it marks a successful holy war against a foreign aggressor. Although jihad ended when the Soviets left in 1989 and Kabul fell in 1992, by the late 1990s and throughout the noughties, terrorist networks claimed their geneses from Afghanistan. In the noughties, one of the very first videos to go viral amongst jihadists was the beheading of a Russian soldier in Chechnya. This was loaded to jihadi websites and forums, which appropriated Afghan jihad symbols and conflated them with something they were not: global jihad. I have encountered this conflation time and time again while working as a journalist in
Abdullah Anas in circle as a young fighter Syria, and covering major terror attacks in Europe. For example, Abdelhamid Abaaoud, a Belgian Moroccan who joined the Syrian battalion and organised the 2015 Paris attacks, tried to emulate the Arab Afghans. He believed they had expelled the Russians from Afghanistan and established Islam, before the West and their allies destabilised the region with democracy. So, when Abaaoud saw Syrians calling for the same (democracy), he dragged their heads along the ground and denounced them as infidels. Many others have gone to Syria, thinking they were taking part in a divinely sanctioned jihad when they were actually taking part in a grubby civil war between Islamist factions. Al Jazeera: What attracts people to join “jihadism”? Hussein: There are many complex reasons for this. A lot of people believe in the foundational myths of al-Qaeda that are historically inaccurate. Some people are intellectually immature, from broken families, they lack the education and the necessary critical tools let alone able to distinguish between sophistry and rhetoric. This is having disastrous consequences. If Abaaoud had understood the history of the Afghan jihad, he might have been more critical of the demagogues and ideologues that peddled these myths. But he didn’t, and so he and his friends fell under the influence of texts, like biographies of Osama bin Laden, and YouTube lectures delivered by demagogues from Walthamstow, that have no academic or religious authority. Muslim Food Bank and Community Services Society Annual Fundraising Dinner February 23, The attendees at the Muslim Food Bank and Community Services Society’s annual fundraising dinner on February 23, 2019, were in for a treat Saturday night. The annual black tie event, which raises money for the operating costs of the organization, is always an enjoyable evening, with dinner, a silent auction, and engaging speakers. This year, the highlight of the event was the main speaker Imam Abdul Malik. A New York native, Imam Malik brought with him an energy and excitement that infected the crowd. In addition to his spirited fundraising, he gave a poignant and thoughtful speech about the power of belief, and the importance of giving generously to charity. Imam Malik relayed the Quranic story of Prophet Zakariyah, and his desire for a child to carry on the service of Allah after he passed. Although Prophet Zakariya was elderly and his wife was barren, the power of his belief in Allah resulted in the birth of Prophet Yahya,
whose name itself means life. Imam Malik related this to the belief that we each must have in overcoming what we think of as “impossible”. Applying that power of belief to the fundraiser, over $100,000 was raised. The Muslim Food Bank and Community Services Society has, of course, been a mainstay in Surrey for many years. In attendance were many members of the Surrey community, united in their support for this important organization. The fundraising dinner was also attended by local Surrey MLAs, including the Honourable Bruce Ralston, the Minister of Jobs, Trade and Technology, the Honourable Harry Bains, the Minister of Labour, and Rachna Singh, the MLA for Surrey-Green Timbers. All expressed their support and appreciation for the work of MFBCSS. The fundraising dinner also provided an opportunity to celebrate the volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure the important work of the organization continues – from serv-
ing over 600 families a month through its food bank arm, to the programming provided through its community services arm, ASPIRE. Through case workers to work one on one with families, job and language support, youth programming, addictions assistance, MFBCSS truly serves its clients in a holistic way. The dinner took place on the eve of an important even for the organization – moving day! Thanks to the generosity and support of the community, MFBCSS has purchased a permanent new warehouse space, located at unit #104, 12925 115 Avenue in Surrey. This space will allow the organization to have a long term home in order to serve its clients. Please drop by to see the new space, and to contribute your time and financial donations to such a worthy cause. MFBCSS is always looking for volunteers, and donations are always welcome – please visit www.muslimfoodbank.com

Trudeau says Wilson-Raybould can discuss ‘relevant matters’ during testimony
OTTAWA – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that Jody Wilson-Raybould will be able to “address relevant matters” when she appears before the House Justice Committee as part of its study into the SNCLavalin affair. “Later today the government will confirm that the member from Vancouver-Granville will be able to address relevant matters at the committee while ensuring that the two active court cases are not jeopardized,” Trudeau said during question period. “We obviously take very seriously the right of everyone to share their perspectives in various ways,” Trudeau told reporters on his way to the Commons. The prime minister has faced calls to waive solicitor-client privilege in the matter to allow Wilson-Raybould to speak publicly about allegations of politi-
cal pressure being placed on her by members of the PMO in regards to an ongoing criminal prosecution of SNC-Lavalin. Citing unnamed sources, The Globe and Mail reported on Feb. 7 that Trudeau’s office pressed Wilson-Raybould to drop a criminal prosecution against SNC-Lavalin when she was attorney general. It was alleged that the PMO wanted Wilson-Raybould to instruct federal prosecutors to change course and pursue a remediation agreement rather than criminal prosecution in the corruption and fraud case against the Quebec engineering and construction giant. CTV News has not independently verified the story. When she was attorney general, WilsonRaybould had the ability to direct federal prosecutors to take a different route with the charges against SNC-Lavalin but she did
not, despite several meetings and conversations on the matter before and after federal prosecutors decided to carry on with the criminal case in the fall. In January, Wilson-Raybould was shuffled into the veterans affairs portfolio, and was replaced as attorney general and justice minister by David Lametti, a Quebec MP. Wilson-Raybould accepted her new position, but then resigned from cabinet days after the Globe story broke. So far, she’s maintained solicitor-client privilege as the reason she’s yet to speak out publicly about the allegations, though she’s signaled a desire to “speak my truth,” and reportedly told cabinet members when she met with them last week at her request, that the pressure was improper. According to minister Jane Philpott, who is
Ottawa, ON - The Honourable Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and of the Official Opposition, issued the following statement after hearing the testimony of former Attorney General Jody Wilson-Raybould: “Justin Trudeau simply cannot continue to govern this great nation now that Canadians know what he has done. That is why I am calling on Justin Trudeau to resign. Further, the RCMP must immediately open an inves-
tigation – if it has not already done so – into the numerous examples of obstruction of justice the former Attorney General detailed in her testimony. “The testimony Canadians have just heard from the former Attorney General Jody Wilson-Raybould tells the story of a Prime Minister who has lost the moral authority to govern. A Prime Minister who allows his partisan political motivations to overrule his duty to uphold the rule of law. A Prime Minister who doesn’t know where the Liberal Party ends and where the Government of Canada begins. And a Prime Minister who has allowed a systemic culture of corruption to take root in his office and those of his most senior cabinet and public service colleagues.“I listened carefully to the testimony of the former Attorney General, and like Canadians, I was sickened and appalled
by her story of inappropriate, and frankly illegal pressure brought to bear on her by the highest officials of Justin Trudeau’s government. All to let a Liberal-connected corporation off the hook on corruption charges. “Before Ms. Wilson-Raybould’s testimony, Canadians knew Justin Trudeau had engineered an unwanted, sustained, and co-ordinated attempt to get Ms. WilsonRaybould to change her mind and stop the criminal trial of SNC-Lavalin. Today, thanks to Ms. Wilson-Raybould’s testimony, we now know just how intense those efforts were: ten meetings and ten phone calls involving eleven senior government officials relentlessly targeting Ms. Wilson-Raybould over a four month period – with the sole objective of bullying her into bending the law to benefit a well-connected corporation. “The details are as shocking as they are cor-
a close friend of Wilson-Raybould, her former cabinet colleague is “doing very well.” Philpott said the two have been in “regular communication” and denied that there’s any division within cabinet as the affair continues to unfold. Source: ctvnews.ca

rupt: multiple veiled threats to her job if she didn’t bow to their demands. Urgings to consider the consequences on election results and shareholder value above judicial due process. And reminders from Justin Trudeau to his Attorney General about his own electoral prospects should she allow SNC-Lavalin’s trial to proceed.“As Ms. Wilson-Raybould has so clearly articulated, the people Canadians entrusted to protect the integrity of our very nation were instead only protecting themselves and their friends. “Mr. Trudeau can no longer, in good standing and with a clear conscience, lead this great nation. “Canada should be a country where we are all equal under the law. Where nobody – regardless of wealth, status, or political connections – is above the law. I believe we can be that country again.”

20 h e a lth / i M M G Massage therapy isn’t just about relaxation. Here’s how to tell if it’s working Jamadi ul Thani 23,1440H March 1, 2019
By Arti Patel Most of us would love more massages in general, but some experts argue most adults are not getting as many massages as they need. Ronald Boado, a registered massage therapist (RMT) at Lemon Water Wellness based in Toronto, said we should be getting at least one massage per month. But one massage per month may be out of reach — people tend to get massages under company benefit plans. If you don’t have insurance or you simply don’t have enough coverage, chances are you’re not getting 12 massages in the year either way. Cecilia Fung, a RMT at Yorkville Sports Medicine Clinic in Toronto said if you can’t get a massage once a month, aim for at least one every three months or one every quarter. Both added it’s not just about relaxation either. “Massage therapy is good for your health,” Fund said. It increases blood circulation, while Boado added it can also improve digestion and posture. Types of massages According to Very Well Health, some of the most popular types of massages include deep tissue, Swedish, hot stone, Thai and aromatherapy. Fung said massages are incredibly individual — some people focus on relaxing or escaping, while others prefer getting deep into tight muscles. Sports massages and pregnancy massages are also popular, she added, and key areas of focus, in general, include shoulders, neck and back. Boado said at the clinics he works at, hot stone therapy is common, especially in winter months. Cupping is also in demand, he added. “Cupping massage basically is a cupping therapy using either a plastic or silicone cup and gliding it to the tissue,” he explained. “It’s a great soft-tissue release.”
What makes a good massage? It’s really hard to determine what makes a good massage, experts say, and it really depends on what you ask for. A “good” massage is one that loosens tight or tangled muscles and offers relief to painful and stiff areas in the body. Some people believe soreness the next day is a result of a good massage (others argue soreness means the RMT didn’t do the best job), but Fung said soreness is not a factor to determine a so-called good massage. She explained soreness is a common sideeffect of a massage, but if you’re sore, it probably means your muscles are weak
or they just need more time going back to regular tension. People who are very active tend to not feel sore the next day because their bodies are used to muscle movement. Boado said a good massage should be based on pressure. “I believe in preparing the tissue and letting the muscle let you sink in… it’s all about intuitive touch,” he said, adding this doesn’t mean every massage needs to be deep tissue. “It’s about how the client feels after a massage — if range of motion gets better or if their muscle pain went away.” The right pressure is also crucial because it allows RMTs to know which technique to
egivers, providing the ability to change jobs quickly when necessary. •Open work permits for spouses/commonlaw partners and study permits for dependent children, to allow the caregiver’s family to accompany them to Canada. In addition, the Minister also launched the Interim Pathway for Caregivers, which will be open from March 4, 2019, until June 4, 2019. This interim program is being launched after hearing directly from caregivers and interested parties that the previous changes made in 2014 were not well understood. Many caregivers began working for families in Canada, only to find out later that they were not going to qualify for permanent residence under an existing program. To address this issue, the Interim Pathway for Caregivers will provide those caregivers an opportunity to stay in Canada permanently. The interim program will have modified criteria compared to the current pilot programs and offer a pathway to permanent residence for caregivers who, in good faith, have come to Canada and are providing care to Canadians, without a clear pathway to
permanent residence. The Government of Canada continues to be committed to family reunification and eliminating backlogs across all immigration streams. In 2017, the Government committed to eliminating 80% of the caregiver backlog and reducing the processing time from its peak of more than 60 months. To date, the Government has reduced 94% of the backlog and reduced the processing time to 12 months. Quote “Caregivers provide care to families in Canada that need it, and it’s time for Canada to care for them in return. We are providing them with both the opportunity to bring their family members here and access permanent residency to demonstrate our commitment.” – The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Quick facts •In October 2017, there were about 9,000 cases, representing 24,000 caregivers and their family members, in the Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP) backlog. Today, there are now only 495 cases left to be processed,
pathway to permanent residency for caregivers: “Over the last three years, Conservatives have been meeting with Filipino caregivers and in August of 2018, we called for a pathway to residency. It is clear that the Liberals have no real plan and it is clear that they act only in response to Conservative policy initiatives. We are disappointed that it took the Liberals this long to consider this needed change. “The Liberal response to caregivers over the last three years has been a frustrating
patchwork. First, they arbitrarily stated that only those who had accrued two years of employment by Nov. 29, 2019 would be eligible for permanent residence. Second, they accumulated a massive processing backlog for those who were eligible for permanent residency, reaching a massive 9,000 cases with wait times as high as 60 months. Meanwhile, there is a 0 day wait time to enter Canada illegally from safe places like Upstate New York. This is not fair. “I have personally met with many caregivers in Canada and I know how painful this
use. “Each client has their own pain scale and some people can’t even take light pressure,” Fung said. “We have to be very careful, each person is different and we try to avoid very deep pressure.” Fung argued the pain should never feel like an 8/10 (the standard scale of pain points RMTs follow is usually 7/10 she added). “Sometimes [clients] are stiff or very tight and RMTs add more pressure — this can cause bruising.” People going for massages should always discuss their health history with the RMT as well, even the type of medication they take can alter a massage. Fung said this can affect the amount of pressure your muscles can handle. Post-massage tips A good massage also isn’t a one-off or luxury item, it allows you to make significant changes to your day-to-day. If your office chair, for example, is the cause of your stiffness or tightness, a massage is a good reminder to adjust your chair and workspace. Author Paola Bassanese previously wrote in HuffPost U.K., a good massage means carrying the benefits of your massage long-term. “It is also a key component of injury prevention so if you are suffering from repetitive strain injuries, some targeted stretches would slow the build-up of tension and inflammation in the joints,” she said. Keeping treatments consistent is also key, as well as following up with stretches and exercise. Sometimes, people try to give themselves massages using vibration tools, but Fung said it’s important to understand which muscles are tight, how your blood is circulating and where your nerves are positioned. The last thing you want to do is injure yourself or further irritate tight muscles. Source: globalnews.ca
Caregivers will now have access to new pathways to permanent residence
Launching 2 new 5-year caregiver immigration pilot programs. February 23, 2019—Toronto, ON– Caregivers will soon have access to 2 new 5-year caregiver immigration pilots that will replace expiring and ineffective pilot programs. The new pilots will allow caregivers to come to Canada together with their family and provide a pathway to permanent residence. Caregivers will also soon have greater flexibility to change jobs quickly, and barriers that prevent family members from accompanying caregivers to Canada will be removed, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister Ahmed Hussen announced today. Under the new pilots, applicants will be assessed for permanent residence criteria before they begin working in Canada. Once the caregiver has their work permit and 2 years of work experience, they will have access to a direct pathway to become a permanent resident. These pilot programs will replace the Caring for Children and Caring for People with High Medical Needs pilots and include: •Occupation-specific work permits for car-
representing 2,655 people in all, a reduction of 94 percent. •The processing time for new applications from those who were grandfathered into the LCP is 12 months instead of the peak of 60 months previously. •Applications under the Caring for Children and Caring for People with High Medical Needs pilots continue to be processed in 6 months or less. •Both the Home Child Care Provider Pilot and the Home Support Worker Pilot will launch later this year and have a maximum of 2,750 principal applicants each, for a total of 5,500 principal applicants, per year. Spouses/common-law partners and dependent children will not count against the limit. By: Mathieu Genest (Minister’s Office Immigration,
Statement On Permanent Residency For Caregivers
OTTAWA, ON – Hon. Michelle Rempel, Shadow Minister for Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, issued the following statement regarding the recently announced
has been. While they were waiting as many as 60 months, they were separated from their families and were unable to sponsor their children to Canada. The Liberals cannot be trusted when it comes to getting this program right. “Canada’s Conservatives have a plan to restore order, fairness, and compassion to Canada’s immigration system. We will continue to hold this government to account to actually improve the immigration streams, instead of making patchwork changes and putting people on no-hope waiting lists.”

Instead of an angry reminder for things not done or need to be done try to start the day with a pleasant good morning and interest in your family’s day. •Tip #2: Reach out to your loved ones- The age of cell phones and emails makes it incredibly easy to reach out to others during a lazy or mundane moment to let them know they have crossed your thoughts. Reach out to your friend while waiting in line at the bank or grocery checkout and watch how quickly the interactions in your friendships increase. •Tip #3: Be touching- A loving hug or warm smile can go a long way with your loved ones. We can pick up on subtle clues when others are genuinely excited to see us. Even brief moments of physical affection such as a quick hug or a pat on the back can go a long way. Imagine a tough moment in your life and the impact a hug and positive words made to you. Now pass that on!
•Tip #4: Double up! – Are you always on the run and too busy to keep up with your relationships? Grab a coffee for your loved one on your coffee run. Cooking something you really enjoy? Why not make some extra for a friend! These small selfless acts makes your loved one feel special and are positive building blocks for your relationships. •Tip #5: Words are your best friend- All these acts might show your loved ones how much they mean to you over time but the power of words can never be replaced. All of us can remember a great compliment or a touching conversation we had with our friends or significant others. We can remember how close we felt to them in that moment and these moments are strongly attached to our memories with them. Using some of these tools can help remind your loved ones that they are truly loved by you. We are often so busy in our lives that we lose touch with what is important in our lives and more importantly the ones who make our life beautiful. Acknowledging the areas that need to be addressed in your relationship is the first step and using these tips you can see a great change in your relationship with your loved ones. Let’s create a movement by actively taking the time to share love with each other in our daily lives. Info: Asma Shums <asmashums@gmail.com

4 Weirdest Things I’ve Been Asked in School about My Hijab
By: Leila El Alam ll my life, I’ve attended fairly exclusive private schools, and as a result, my classmates have always been bright, capable, and talented individuals. Yet, some of these privileged young men and women ask ignorant and often tactless questions of me because I fail to fit in with their perception of normality. This proves that academic intelligence, unfortunately, is not always coupled with awareness of other cultures, religions, or even a general knowledge of the world beyond their little bubble. I know that I, too, live in a bubble and have been guilty of ignorance concerning subjects I should be more informed about. Though some of the lines below may come across as harmless or laughable, they are strong indicators of the problematic lack of exposure to diversity, even among those who are well-educated. Here are some of the weirdest questions I’ve been asked: 1 – “Why do you have blue hair?” This question was earnestly asked of me by a classmate in seventh grade. I was wearing a blue hijab with a zebra pattern on it. This kid genuinely thought it was my hair. Had this inquiry come from a toddler, it
#
would have been unsurprising and endearing. A thirteen-year-old, however, needs to be held to some sort of standard of logic, and this kid just wasn’t making the cut. 2 – “Aren’t you hot in that?” Ok, this question isn’t weird. In fact, it’s probably the most common thing asked of covering Muslim women. Nevertheless, it’s always come off as slightly absurd and unnecessary to me. The thing is, if I’m wearing a long-sleeved shirt, jeans, and a scarf on my head while everyone else prances around in their tank tops and shorts, chances are I’m pretty warm. People still feel obliged to hear me say it, which I don’t understand. Anyone with a drop of common sense can come to that conclusion without my help. This question is always rhetorical; it’s basically the equivalent of saying: “Why would you do this to yourself?” Often accompanied by a look of pity, this question used to aggravate me. The reason it got to me more than other questions is that those asking (depending on the context) were looking down on my faith and seemed to gain a strange satisfaction from hearing me admit that I was warmer than everyone around me. 3 – “Can you even get hot anymore?” Fortunately, this was only asked of me
#
#
once. Were this a regular occurance, I would fear for future generations. Apparently, one can develop a complete immunity to feeling heat if one endures it for long enough. When I replied, laughing, my classmate looked at my dubiously. A lengthy (and distinctly onesided) debate ensued in which he insisted that “If you feel it enough, you’ll just eventually stop feeling it.” 4 – “Is there anything under there?” Just a week ago, a 12th grader asked me this, the trepidation in her voice evident. This was someone I’d just met approximately one minute prior to her probing. I can only assume (and desperately hope) that
#
she was referring to hair with her use of the word “anything.” Regardless, this question is rude. Out of all the inquiries mentioned, this is by far the most intrusive and alienating. No one likes to be treated like they’re an anomaly.
The takeaway?
All this being said, I don’t usually care when people ask me questions about my scarf so long as they’re not wildly inappropriate or offensive. I’ve gotten used to it over the years, and learned to laugh most things off. I just wish that sometimes, people would think before speaking.

‘High alert in KP as tension with India escalates
Chief Minister Mahmood Khan has declared “high alert” in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and convened special meeting of the cabinet on Thursday in the backdrop of volatile situation along the eastern border. Information Minister Shaukat Ali Yousafzai told Dawn on Wednesday that heads of Provincial Disaster Management Authority, Rescue 1122, Civil Defence and other departments would also attend the meeting. “All departments
concerned have been put on high alert across the province to cope with any type of emergency,” he said.Bacha Khan International Airport was closed down for commercial flights after Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) issued NOTAM early morning. Aircrafts of foreign and domestic airlines were stranded at the airport following closure of the airspace. An official said that 10 international and two domestic flights were can-
celled from the city’s airport. A UAE-based airline informed its passengers that it had suspended flight from Peshawar to Dubai till Friday next. Separately, hospitals have been put on high alert and leaves of the staff have been cancelled to cope with any medical crisis. The hospitals have been directed to reserve stock of medicines after orders by the government in the wake prevalent security situation. Source: dawn.com
‘Give peace a chance’: Prime Minister Khan responds to Modi
P
rime Minister Imran Khan on Sunday responded to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s comments given a day earlier and assured him that he stands by his words that if India provides Pakistan with “actionable intelligence” regarding the February 14 attack in occupied Kashmir’s Pulwama, “we will immediately act”. On Saturday, Modi had asked Prime Minister Khan to keep his word as a Pathan and fight poverty and illiteracy together with India instead of fighting each other. Khan today sought to reiterate Pakistan’s desire to see stability in the region, saying Modi should “give peace a chance”, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office. “In my meeting with PM Modi in December 2015, we had agreed that since poverty alleviation is a priority for our region, we would not allow any terrorist in-
THE decision by the country’s civilian and military leadership to take action against Jamaatud Dawa and its charity wing, Falahi-Insaniat Foundation, is significant. On Thursday, the National Security Committee, with the prime minister in the chair, took the decision, with the Prime Minister’s Office later saying that the state cannot be allowed to “become hostage to extremism”. The JuD is of course an avatar of Lashkari-Taiba, one of the many jihadi groups that dot this country’s landscape. However, making an announcement about the group’s
cident to derail peace efforts, however long before Pulwama, these efforts were derailed in September 2018,” the premier said, in a reference to India’s cancellation of a meeting between the Pakistani and Indian foreign ministers on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly last year. “Sadly, now peace remains elusive due to elections in India,” Khan regretted. The exchange of remarks between Khan and his Indian counterpart comes amidst heightened tensions between India and Pakistan following the attack on Indian security forces in Pulwama. At least 40 Indian paramilitary soldiers were killed on February 14 when a suicide bomber drove an explosive-laden car into their convoy. According to media reports, Jaishe-Muhammad claimed responsibility for the attack but New Delhi immediately blamed Islamabad and threatened a retaliatory attack. It also announced that it would launch a diplomatic offensive to isolate Pakistan in the international community. Moreover, India scrapped the Most Favoured Nation status granted to Pakistan and imposed a 200 per cent customs duty on its goods. In response to India’s allegations, Prime Minister Khan promised to conduct an in-
vestigation if New Delhi provided “actionable evidence” but also warned that Pakistan will “retaliate” if attacked. On Friday, the Pakistan Army also warned India to avoid “any misadventure”, as it could have dangerous consequences. Pakistan condemns attempts to repeal Article 35-A
proscription is not enough; if the state has evidence of the outfit’s involvement in militancy it should present the facts and pursue the legal course so that JuD’s leadership can face justice. As has been witnessed for nearly two decades now, the state moves to ban militant outfits, but, in very little time they are back, up and running, with new names and the entire structure of violence intact. For example, in 2002 the Musharraf regime banned a host of jihadi and sectarian groups, yet this effort had little practical effect because with a mere change of nomenclature, the groups continued to peddle hate and violence, making a mockery of the proscription. Moreover, the establishment’s attempts to ‘mainstream’ violent actors — eg presenting them as legitimate religious scholars or relaunching the jihadi lashkars as political parties — have also failed to steer these
groups away from violence and hate. For example, a sectarian party has been repeatedly allowed to take part in general elections, but its senior leaders have failed to cease spewing venom. History has shown that while low-level jihadi and sectarian party cadres perhaps can be deradicalised and mainstreamed, their leadership is committed to the ideology of violence and can only be silenced through the legal path. These parties’ fundraising, communications and organisational systems must be targeted to put them out of business; imposing mere ‘bans’ is futile. In the delicate post-Pulwama period, Prime Minister Imran Khan must be praised for saying that those who use this country’s soil to attack others are enemies of Pakistan. The government has now started to take action. For instance, reports emerged on Friday that a key madressah associated with Jaish-
Meanwhile, a statement issued by the Foreign Office expressed concerns over the expected hearing of petitions in the Supreme Court of India calling for the scrapping of Article 35-A of the Indian constitution. “Pakistan condemns any such attempts as these are clearly aimed at bringing about demographic changes in the Indian-occupied Jammu & Kashmir (IoK),” read the state-
ment. The handout added that “any move in this direction would be a blatant violation of international law and the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, which prohibit introducing material changes to the disputed territory”. The FO in its statement also expressed grave concern at the evolving situation in IoK. It noted that following retaliatory attacks against Kashmiris in IoK and several parts of India after the Pulawama attack, the Indian government has demonstrated further heavy-handedness with “enhanced use of force, large-scale arrests, and incarceration of senior Kashmiri leaders”. “The large-scale deployment of additional paramilitary forces, and orders by the local administration to hospitals and about sale of fuel and food grains, are contributing to an atmosphere of extreme intimidation and fear. Immediate steps are required to reverse this frenzy and restore calm,” the statement warned. The FO further called upon the international community to “take cognisance of the situation and counsel India to refrain from further escalation, defuse current tensions and resolve issues through dialogue and engagement”. Ban on Jamaatud Dawa (JuD)
e-Mohammad in Bahawalpur — another militant outfit accused of orchestrating cross-border attacks — was taken over by the Punjab government. These moves indicate that the leadership has perhaps realised that taking half-baked steps against violent actors is dangerous for Pakistan’s internal security, as well as its external relations. Now the elected leadership and the military establishment must take this campaign — as envisaged under NAP — to its logical conclusion by ensuring that nonstate actors are not able to raise armed militias, and that those spewing hatred against other countries or spreading sectarian views are prosecuted. It was unwise to allow these outfits to operate in the past, and efforts are needed to shut them down permanently. Source:www.dawn.com
Statement of Special Session of the National Security Committee held in Islamabad 26 February 2019
A special meeting of the National Security Committee chaired by the Prime Minister was held at Prime Minister ‘s Office today. The meeting was attended by Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Defence, Finance, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, COAS, CNS, CAS and other civil and military officials. Forum strongly rejected Indian claim of targeting an alleged terrorist camp near Balakot and the claim of heavy casualties. Once again Indian government has restored to a self serving, reckless and fictitious claim. This action has been done for domestic consumption being in election environment, putting regional peace and stability at grave risk. The claimed area of strike is open for the world to see the facts on ground. For this domestic and international media is being taken to the impact site. Forum concluded that India has committed uncalled for aggression to which Pakistan shall re-
spond at the time and place of its choosing. To take the nation on board, the govenunent has decided to requisition joint session of the Parliament. PM has summoned special meeting ofNCA on 27 February 2019. PM has directed that elements of national power including the Armed Forces and the people of Pakistan to remain prepared for all eventualities. He decided to engage with global leadership to expose irresponsible Indian policy in the region. PM appreciated timely and effective rehas therefore, taken strikes at non military sponse of PAF to repulse Indian attempt target, avoiding human loss and collateral without any loss of life or property. damage. doing acts of aggression at whatever pretext they wish on a given day. If India is striking at so called terrorist backers without a shred of evidence, we also retain reciprocal rights to retaliate against elements that enjoy Indian patronage while carrying out acts of terror in Pakistan. We do not wish to go to that route and wish that India gives peace a chance and to resolve issues like a mature democratic nation. Islamabad 27 February 2019
