HERE was a time within living memory when Britain was an unrivalled global power. Its colonial empire stretched pretty much across the world, and for decades at a stretch its divide-and-rule strategy worked reasonably well from London’s point of view in most of the occupied nations. These days there are several reminders every week of British incompetence in self-governance. The nation’s inability to make up its mind about its future in relation to the European Union (EU) has regularly been highlighted since the referendum nearly three years ago in which Britons decided by a small but clear majority to quit the organisations, but in recent months the process has been reduced to a farce. It has been reported that some European television channels in their news bulletins relegate reports about the latest developments on the Brexit front to the quirky-news slot just before sports and the weather. In Britain, Brexit naturally dominates the headlines. It has nonetheless been noticeable that even the most seasoned analysts, when asked what happens next, invariably confess that they haven’t the foggiest idea. After Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May eventually managed to conclude an exit

deal with the EU, it soon became pretty clear that its terms were unacceptable not just to Labour and the other opposition parties but, crucially, to a substantial section of Tory MPs as well as to the Democratic Unionist Party, the reactionary Northern Irish outfit whose 10 seats May relies on for a parliamentary majority. The latter’s objection relates mainly to the so-called Irish backstop, which essentially means maintaining the status quo on the only land border between the UK and the EU — the one that separates Britain’s last substantial colony, Northern Ireland, from the Republic of Ireland. There’s a series of problems attached to every putative Brexit solution. May hesitated to put her deal to a parliamentary vote, and when she did it went down to the largest defeat for a government motion in more than a century. It suffered the same fate when she gave it a second go, although the size of the rejection was somewhat smaller — ‘only’ 149 votes. It was expected to be brought back to parliament this week after the EU offered Britain a brief reprieve by pushing back the Brexit deadline from March 29 to April 12 in the event of the House of Commons failing to pass the deal, with the added proviso that it could be de-
layed until May 22 if a majority of MPs backed the agreement. In recent days, there have been indications that May could sweeten the deal by declaring that she would step down soon afterwards, or permitting an amendment whereby the terms of Brexit would be put to a popular vote — in effect a second referendum, which was the main demand of the million or so protesters on the streets of London last Saturday. Meanwhile, a petition to revoke article 50 — which put in motion the Brexit process two years ago — had gathered upwards of 5m signatures by the weekend. On Monday night, MPs voted to wrest control of parliamentary proceedings from the government in order to table motions on alternative paths out of the present mess — and May lost three of her ministers in the process. The government sees the notion of the House of Commons taking control of parliamentary business as something of a constitutional crisis, and it comes not long after the prime minister accused MPs of thwarting the popular will. That’s hyperbole, and what should be more worrying is the prospect that even after today’s indicative votes, no clear path forward will be delineated. May’s relentless stubbornness
may well cost her the keys to No 10 Downing Street, but it is far from clear whether a change of prime minister at this juncture would make a huge difference. In fact, there’s a series of problems attached to every putative solution. A second referendum? Apart from the fact that about half the population would see it as a betrayal of sorts, how long will it take to decide exactly what options should be offered to the electorate? A general election? What if the result is as indecisive as it was in 2017? Let’s not forget that the Labour Party too is deeply divided, and not just on Brexit. For all that, it is extraordinarily churlish to direct Brexit-related invective primarily towards Labour, as sections of the British media love to do, given that David Cameron opted for a referendum on EU membership only to placate the right wing of his Conservative Party, and his successor’s actions (and inaction) have mainly be guided by the same concern. The leading Brexiteers held out the idea of “taking back control” from Brussels, but evidently gave little thought to how it might be achieved, and the upshot is that Britain has lost its way. It may find it in the days ahead, but the likelihood keeps on shrinking. By: Mahir Ali

Tragedy in New Zealand By: Mahmood Awan The tragedy in New Zealand is an attack on religious freedoms. This attack was planned and carried out by a crazed terrorist on the very fundamental values we treasure as human beings. The senseless murders of these innocent souls is beyond the human capacity of understanding. The Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern, has become the face of true leadership in the face of the most violent terrorist attack facing her country. Her empathy and stoic determination in supporting the families of the victims has won her admiration from around the world as New Zealand comes to grips with the aftermath of the unprecedented attack on the mosques. What can we do to prevent such a catastrophe from happening in Canada? Religious organizations in BC, in particular the BCMA must determine a viable course of action to discuss the future of our community, our safety, our security and the protection of freedom to practice our faith in our mosques. This issue is beyond the scope of a few executives at the BCMA. The mosques under
the BCMA are not equipped to handle and proceed with drastic measures to protect our members. The Security Infrastructure Program put in place by the Canadian government provides funding to help secure our places of worship. It is unfortunate when places of worship must concern themselves with ensuring the safety of its congregants but all of us know the toll that Islamophobia has taken on Muslim families and the continuing crisis it presents. Places of worship must be sanctuaries of peace and reflection not hate and intolerance. My suggestion is we should have a security card for each member. The ID card can be sold for $5 and the card must be swiped at the door before entering. No one without the ID card would be permitted to enter the masjid. This is not an easy or painless system to put into place but for the sake of the security of our members, we must pursue procedures that must be implemented. The BCMA must be the leader in organizing a widespread plan of action which would require the Executive to include past and current members to commit to a strategy for the benefit of our community. Please put the differences aside and collectively come together and put a security plan in place for every member of the BCMA. Let us show true wisdom by being vigilant in the face of any security risks. Let us not be penny wise and pound foolish. Jazak Allah Kheir un,
ISCC and MAT Strongly Condemn Attacks on New Zealand Mosques
By:Imam Syed Soharwardy Calgary, Alberta) Islamic Supreme Council of Canada (ISCC) and Muslims Against Terrorism (MAT) strongly condemn yesterday’s terrorist attacks on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand in which more than 50 worshipers were dead and dozens were wounded. “This is nothing but terrorism against Muslims. This is nothing but hate against Muslims. This is nothing but Islamophobia”, said Imam Syed Soharwardy, the founder of Muslims Against Terrorism and the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada. ISCC and MAT demands that the United Nations and all countries must declare Islamophobia hate and punishable crime. Islamophobia is flourishing and it must stop. ISCC and MAT appreciates the Prime Minister of New Zeeland’s speech in which Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern not only condemned the attacks but declared that these attacks are on all New Zealanders. We must unite against hate. ISCC and MAT express deep sympathies and solidarity with the Muslim community of New Zealand. We stand shoulder to shoulder with our brothers and sisters in New Zealand. We pray for the victims.

Proven, angry Iblis-devil is anti-AllahCreator, more hateful of HIS followers, and trying hard to fight against HIM and HIS followers for the simple reason that he/Jinn was punished by Allah for disobeying HIM and thrown out of the Divine presence and since then he became an enemy of Allah-Creator and HIS followers. Though, he knows that eventually he will be defeated by Allah, yet he keeps on playing his dangerous hateful hobby of killing the true worshippers of Creator-GOD. Little he knows that by his evil actions of killing Muslim worshipers he has done them a favor, as such are believed to be the martyrs and they fly away straight to Heaven-SubhanAllah. We all work hard and try to thrive in the way of our Creator, obey HIS commandments to enter Paradise, in some cases we pay thousands to buy the tickets from an evil conman who promises to give entry in Paradise, but all his promises are in vein, as only Allah’s promises are valid who owns the 7 Heavens and the whole world. Kudos to majority of the non-Muslim righteous people standing by the grieving Muslims and showing perfect solidarity with them.

‘Ehsas’: PM Khan launches ambitious social safety, poverty alleviation programme
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday launched an ambitious social safety and poverty alleviation programme for the welfare of the public. Speaking at a ceremony in Islamabad to kick off the programme, named ‘Ehsas’ (compassion), the premier said the
first change that would be brought under the poverty alleviation plan would be amending Article 38(D) of the Constitution which included a clause regarding providing people with food, shelter, clothing, education and taking care of their health. But the provision in its current form is only a policy recommendation, Khan noted, saying that the government would need to bring an amendment in the Constitution and make it a “fundamental right” so the state can guarantee these five things to the people of Pakistan. “This is the first step, it is a difficult task,” the premier said, adding that the government was putting the pressure on itself so that anyone will be able to go to the courts and say that this is their fundamental right. Khan said under the programme, the money spent on underprivileged segments of society would be increased by Rs80 billion, and further by Rs120bn by 2020.“No government has so far spent so much money on poverty alleviation,” the premier claimed. Zardari, Faryal approach IHC for pre-arrest bail Former president Asif Ali Zardari and his sister MPA Faryal Talpur on Wednesday approached the Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking pre-arrest bail in the fake accounts case. The PPP co-chairman’s counsel, in the petition, asked the high court to prevent NAB from arresting his client. He argued that Zardari had received three National Accountability Bureau (NAB) summons so far, but still was not aware of the actual number of inquiries against him. The petition requested the court for instant interim bail, and to grant Zardari bail until the conclusion of the case. It contended that a court of law is Zardari’s only option to avoid arrest. Planned govt briefing on National Action Plan cancelled after opposition leaders back out A planned government briefing to parliamentary leaders on the implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP) against terrorism, scheduled for March 28, was cancelled by the government after leaders of major opposition parties declined to participate in the meeting due to “political considerations”. Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s spokesperson told DawnNewsTV that PML-N leader Shahbaz Sharif had declined to attend the meeting through a letter, while PPP CoChairman Asif Zardari and JUI-F chief Fazlur Rehman had communicated their unavailability with the government via telephone. The spokesperson claimed that they had all
declined to attend due to their “political engagements”. “Under these circumstances, due to the political considerations of opposition parties, the consultation will not be held,” the spokesperson added. The government had formally initiated the process of consultations on NAP with opposition parties in mid-March. Although there was no mention of military courts in the foreign minister’s letters to opposition leaders, a number of opposition members believe the main purpose of the activity was to seek their consent for their extension. The two-year term of the courts is set to expire soon. The main opposition parties had been contemplating a boycott of the planned brief-
ing due to prevailing tensions with the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf. A source in the PPP earlier said that after the “brutal police action” against party workers gathered outside the Islamabad NAB office to show support for Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, it had become difficult for the leadership to sit with government functionaries at any forum.Opposition Leader Shahbaz Sharif had urged the government to brief the whole parliament instead of convening a meeting of “selected leaders”, while the JUI-F chief had announced that his party had previously rejected NAP and therefore would not attend the scheduled briefing. Trump formally recognises Israeli U.K. lawmakers seize Brexit agenda sovereignty over Golan Heights in bid to break deadlock US President Donald Trump on Monday formally recognised Israeli sovereignty over the Israel-occupied Golan Heights, reversing decades of United State’s policy. The announcement came as Benjamin Netanyahu visited the White House in a trip the Israeli prime minister said he cut short after an early morning rocket, allegedly fired from the besieged Gaza Strip, struck a home in central Israel, wounding seven people. Israel began striking Hamas targets in Gaza later on Monday, the Israeli military said. Hamas had earlier denied its movement was behind the overnight rocket. Monday’s decree formalised Trump’s statement last week, saying it was time for the US “to fully recognise” Israeli sovereignty over the Golan. The move appeared to give Netanyahu a boost before the closely contested April 9 Israeli elections. “This was a long time in the making,” Trump said alongside Netanyahu in the White House. “Today, aggressive action by Iran and terrorist groups in southern Syria, including Hezbollah, continue to make the Golan Heights a potential launching ground for attacks against Israel - very violent attacks,” Trump said. “This should have been done numerous presidents ago.” ‘Blatant attack’ Israel seized much of the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 SixDay War and then effectively annexed it in 1981, a move that was never recognised by the international community. Syria’s foreign ministry called the US decision to recognise Israeli sovereignty over the Golan a “blatant attack on the sovereignty and territorial integrity” of Syria, according to a statement carried by state news agency SANA. “The liberation of the Golan by all available means and its return to the Syrian motherland is an inalienable right,” the statement added. “The decision ... makes the United States the main enemy of the Arabs.” Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said it was impossible for Turkey to accept the US decision on the Golan Heights. He added that action would be taken against the US over the move, including at the United Nations. UN Secretary-General Antonio
Guterres was “clear that the status of Golan has not changed,” UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Monday. “The UN’s policy on Golan is reflected in the relevant resolutions of the Security Council and that policy has not changed,” Dujarric said. A UN Security Council resolution adopted unanimously by the 15-member body in 1981 declared that Israel’s “decision to impose its laws, jurisdiction and administration in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights is null and void and without international legal effect”. It also demanded Israel rescind its decision. Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issued a statement rejecting the US move and saying the Golan Heights are occupied Arab land. The Arab League condemned the move saying that “Trump’s recognition does not change the area’s status.” Earlier this month, a senior US administration official told reporters in Washington that there was “no change in [US] outlook or our policy vis-a-vis these territories and the need for a negotiated settlement there”. The official was responding to questions about why the US changed its description of the Golan Heights in its latest annual human rights report in which the area was referred to as “Israeli-controlled”, not “Israeli-occupied” as it was previously stated. Trump, who has shown robust support for his country’s close ally Israel, recognised Jerusalem as the country’s capital in 2017, defying international consensus and angering Palestinian leaders, who view Israeli-annexed East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state. Concern after Italy vows to keep tanker allegedly hijacked by rescued refugees and migrants out of territorial waters. An aid group has warned of a “desperate and dangerous situation” in the Mediterranean Sea after authorities in Italy vowed to close their ports to a ship reportedly hijacked by rescued refugees and migrants. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Matteo Salvini, Italy’s far-right interior minister, identified the ship as Elhiblu 1 and said the crew had rescued some 120 people in Libyan waters. Salvini said the tanker initially headed back to Tripoli, Libya’s capital, but six nautical miles from port it suddenly changed course heading north. On Wednesday evening, it was halfway between the Libyan coast and Malta, he added. Salvini, who has been at the centre of several international stand-offs over his refusal to let refugee rescue ships dock in Italy, said it was too early to tell if the ship was being directed towards Malta or Italy’s Lampedusa island. Vowing not to let the ship dock in Italy, Matteo said: “These are not migrants in distress, they are pirates. They will only see Italy through a telescope.” A Maltese military official, who was not authorised to speak to reporters and requested anonymity, told local media that Malta would not also allow the ship to enter the country’s waters.
“We received reports of a pirated ship heading towards Malta or Lampedusa (off Sicily) and we’re monitoring the situation,” a Maltese coastguard spokesman told AFP news agency. There was no immediate word on the condition of El Hiblu I’s crew. Other information about the reported hijacking was unavailable or difficult to confirm while the vessel remained at sea. In a Twitter post, Doctors Without Borders described the situation as “desperate and dangerous”, saying it highlighted “the broken system at sea and the despair of vulnerable people”. British lawmakers seized a measure of control over the stalled Brexit process from Prime Minister Theresa May’s foundering government Monday, setting up a series of votes that could dramatically alter the course of the U.K.’s departure from the European Union. The move came after May conceded that Parliament would defeat her twice-rejected divorce deal with the EU again if she put it to a third vote. With Brexit delayed and the new departure date up in the air, the House of Commons voted to give itself temporary control of the parliamentary timetable starting on Wednesday so lawmakers can vote on alternatives to May’s withdrawal deal. The government usually controls the scheduling of votes in Parliament. Lawmakers who backed Monday’s motion, which passed 329-302, hope the planned “indicative votes” will narrow the options down to one that can secure majority support. Possible options include a “soft Brexit” that maintains close economic ties with the EU or scrapping Britain’s departure altogether. Three government ministers quit their posts so they could back the motion. Richard Harrington, who resigned as a junior business minister, accused the government of “playing roulette with the lives and livelihoods of the vast majority of people in this country” by failing to resolve Britain’s Brexit impasse. The government said it was disappointed by the vote, claiming it “upends the balance between our democratic institutions and sets a dangerous, unpredictable precedent for the future.” But it also conceded that the new votes might be a way to break the monthslong Brexit gridlock. May said she would “engage constructively” with the results of the process, though she said she was skeptical that it would produce a decisive result. The move raises the chances that Britain will tack toward a softer Brexit, and is likely to be welcomed by the EU. Guy Verhofstadt, the European Parliament’s Brexit co-ordinator, tweet that it was an “opportunity to build a cross-party co-operation leading to an enhanced political declaration & a closer future relationship!” Earlier in the day, May acknowledged, “with great regret,” that her deal still lacked “sufficient support” to be approved as of Monday. She said she hoped to hold a third vote on the agreement later this week and was working to build support for the deal, which sets out the terms of withdrawing from the EU and the outline of future relations with the bloc. May warned opponents that continuing to reject the deal could lead to a “slow Brexit” that postpones the country’s departure indefinitely. With the March 29 Brexit day set almost two years ago days away and the withdrawal agreement lacking Parliament’s approval, European leaders agreed to a postponement last week to avoid a chaotic cliffedge departure that would be disruptive for the world’s biggest trading bloc and deeply damaging for Britain. However, the EU granted a shorter delay than May sought. It said if Parliament approves the proposed divorce deal, the U.K. would leave the EU on May 22. If not, the government has until April 12 to tell the 27 remaining EU countries what it plans to do leave without a deal, cancel Brexit or chart a path to a new option. In agreeing to the postponement, European leaders hoped Britain’s deadlocked politicians would find a solution to the crisis. But
the EU isn’t counting on it. The European Commission said Monday it had completed planning for a no-deal Brexit, calling that outcome “increasingly likely.” The EU said its members would be able to cope with a no-deal departure, although more remained to be done on ensuring an open border between EU member Ireland and the U.K.’s Northern Ireland -- something both sides have agreed to. Checkpoints there were a source of tension and a target during the decades of sectarian violence before Northern Ireland’s 1998 peace accord. An EU official said the bloc was in “in intense discussions with the Irish authorities about these matters.” May stands little chance of getting the deal she struck with the EU approved unless she can win over Brexit-backing lawmakers in her Conservative Party and its Northern Irish ally, the Democratic Unionist Party. The DUP said Monday that the party’s “position remains unchanged.” May has come under intense pressure to quit the prime minister’s post as the price of winning support for the deal. At a meeting Sunday at the prime minister’s country retreat, Chequers, prominent Brexiteers told May they might back the deal -if she agreed to step down so a new leader could take charge of the next phase of negotiations, which will settle Britain’s future relations with the EU. Former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, who attended the meeting and is likely to be a contender in any future Conservative leadership race, accused the government of lacking “gumption” and chickening out on delivering Brexit. Britain’s bestselling newspaper, The Sun, put a call on its front page for the prime minister to resign under the headline “Time’s up, Theresa.” May is hanging on, hoping she can persuade Brexit-backing lawmakers that rejecting her deal means Britain may never leave the EU. She told lawmakers that Britain would not leave the EU without a deal unless Parliament -- which has already rejected the idea -- voted for it. Opponents of Brexit feel the political tide may be turning in their favour. Hundreds of thousands of people marched through London on Saturday calling for a new referendum on whether to leave the EU or remain. But with the deadline for a Brexit decision less than three weeks away, British politicians remain divided, and increasingly despairing about the country’s political gridlock. “Brexit is like the Death Star of politics,” Conservative legislator George Freeman said. “I always feared it would be like this. It’s destroying and soaking up all the prime minister’s room for manoeuvr and political goodwill.“I’ve never known this country so divided, so angry and in such a dangerous state,” he said. ‘This is New Zealand’s Muslim way of doing things’ - Kiwi Muslims respond to massacre with kindness, not anger
By: Isaac Davison
Faced with unimaginable death and suffering, New Zealand Muslims have responded with warmth and generosity. That positive response comes partly from Islamic teachings, religious experts say. It is also because of a determination to fit in to New Zealand life and communities. The aftermath of the unprecedented massacre has been marked by the near-absence of anger within the local Muslim community. There have been some frustrated voices - most noticeably from the Islamic Women’s Council, who said they had warned again and again of the growing potential for racist attacks on New Zealand soil. But the overwhelming reaction from Muslims has been one of shock, closely followed by humanity and thoughtfulness. New Zealanders around the country have reported random acts of kindness since Friday - an extra scoop of chips at the takeaways, a discounted taxi ride, a hug from a stranger. “This is New Zealand’s Muslim way of doing things,” said Eva Nisa, from Victoria University’s Religious Studies
department. “The majority of Muslims in New Zealand are very moderate, very peaceful. And the way Muslim leaders in general try to comfort other Muslims is a role model for other countries. She added: “The very foundation of Islam is that notion of peace - we don’t do retaliation.” Muslims were guided in grief by their faith. “In Islamic tradition, when something bad happens, we need to strengthen each other, to visit people who have been hurt, to be at their side,” said Nis www.nzherald.co.nz a .

A week after a gunman opened fire at two mosques that left 50 people dead, women across New Zealand showed solidarity with Muslims Friday by wearing headscarves. As Christchurch was set for prayers near the Al Noor mosque, where most of the victims were slain in the country’s worst terrorist attack in modern history, women and some children in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch posted pictures of themselves in headscarves. The move stemmed from a doctor in Auckland’s idea to wear the garments, traditionally known as a hijab, after she was told about a woman who was too afraid to go outside because she thought that wearing a headscarf would make her a target for attacks, according to Reuters. “I wanted to say: ‘We are with you, we want you to feel at home on your own streets, we love, support and respect you’,” Thaya Ashman told Reuters. Others who
followed suit echoed Ashman’s sentiments. “Why am I wearing a headscarf today? Well, my primary reason was that if anybody else turns up waving a gun, I want to stand between him and anybody he might be pointing it at,” Bell Sibly told ABC News in Christchurch. As a sign of modesty, many Muslim women cover their heads in public with the hijab. However, some critics view the headscarf as a sign of oppression against females. Jacinda Ardern, the country’s prime minister, declared a ban Thursday on military-style rifles, which includes assault rifles, high-capacity magazines and military-like semi-automatic rifles. On Tuesday, Ardern won praise after she told New Zealand’s Parliament that she would deny the man responsible for the carnage the one thing he likely craved: fame. Street gangs and motorcycle clubs across New Zealand also offered to protect the nation’s mosques during Friday prayers. Less than 2 percent of New Zealand’s 5 million people are Muslim. Thousands of New Zealanders, however, were expected to join in the prayers in solidarity. Leaders of the Mongrel Mob, Black Power, King Cobras – and even Hells Angels – have said they will stand sentry at many of the mosques. The shooting rocked the nation, and dozens of wounded remain hospitalized. Funerals have been taking place all week. www.usatoday.com
The Station of Adab (Etiquette) – 1 Continue From last edition.
Dr Ovamir Anjum Translations from Ibn Al-Qayyim’s Madarij Al-Salikin (Steps of the Seekers) | The Author Of Al-Manâzil states: By this definition, then, the essence of adab is justice. And Allah knows best. [Al-Harawi] states: It [adab] has three levels: (1) Restraining fear from turning into despair; (2) Preventing hope from becoming complacency; (3) Stopping bliss from provoking audacity. By the first he means that [adab] does not allow fear to grow to a point where it becomes hopelessness and despair from Allah’s mercy, for that is blameworthy fear. I have heard to say Shaykh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, Allah have mercy on him: “The proper limit of fear is that which prevents you from acts of disobedience to Allah. What goes beyond that is unnecessary.” The fear that falls to despair is bad etiquette toward –and ignorance of– the mercy of Allah, the Exalted, which has predominated over His wrath. As for the second, the prevention of hope from becoming complacency is that one’s hope should not reach the point where one feels security from chastisement, for None feels secure from Allah’s plan except the losers [Sûrat Al-Aʿrâf, 7:99], and such is another extreme. The definition of hope is “what makes worship pleasant to you and prompts you toward the journey,” which is like the wind that pushes the sailboat. If it stops, so does the boat. If it turns violent, it capsizes the boat. If it blows in proper measure, however, it sails the boat to its destination. As for the third, “stopping bliss from encouraging audacity,” it is something only the strong and strong-willed can accomplish, those who are not so overwhelmed with happiness as to forget gratitude, nor with grief as to neglect patience. As it has been said by a poet: Joy does not outdo their thanks Nay, nor affliction their patience The human self (nafs) is a companion of Satan and resembles him. The gifts of Allah descend into the heart and the soul. The self (nafs) ever lies in ambush for these gifts and is bent on taking its share of them, turning them into its own conquest. Who-
soever is lenient with the self and ignorant of it allows it to fulfill its designs. Thus, what is supposed to be a divine gift to the heart and the soul –and a strength for it– turns into the conquest of the self, as well as an instrument of that conquest. And the self therefore rebels, for it sees itself as self-sufficient. [As Allah says,] The human being is indeed rebellious, for he sees himself self-sufficient. So then –when one acquires some wealth– how much more rebellious would the nafs be if it thinks that it has attained much higher things, such as knowledge, the state [of ecstatic presence before Allah], inner awareness (maʿrifa), or divine disclosure? When these things become the attainments of the self (rather than of the heart and soul, as they are intended to be), the servant deviates from the path inevitably to a blameworthy extreme and displays audacity, or ecstatic utterances (shadḥ), or other such signs. By Allah, how many souls have been spiritually murdered, looted, and wounded in this way and are left wondering: “Where did you come from? How did you attack?” The least that occurs as a result of this is that the door of any further bliss is closed. That is why it has been the way of those with inner knowledge and insight, when they are given such divine gifts, to err on the side of humility, self-criticism, and investigation of their shortcomings. They look to the one closer to Allah and nobler than themselves in His eyes –who, when he entered Makkah on the Day of the Opening, his head was bowed, so much so that it touched the back of his camel at a time when it is the wont of the human being that his happiness, victory, and triumph own him and raise him to the heights of the sky. The real man is thus one whose adab protects his [spiritual] openings and his provision that is sent by Allah from being stolen by his nafs; and helpless is the one who is generous to his nafs. And what an unseemly generosity, and what a foolhardy charity! And from Allah alone help is sought..

Relations between Trudeau, Wilson-Raybould B.C. housing policies allowing began to fray over her Supreme Court pick: Sources landlords to evict drug users: study Relations between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and then-Attorney General Jody Wilson-Raybould first began to fray in 2017 over concerns about her choice to fill a vacancy on the Supreme Court of Canada. A year before cabinet discussions about a plea deal for Quebec engineering company SNC-Lavalin, Trudeau and Wilson-Raybould disagreed about her recommendation of Manitoba Justice Glenn D. Joyal, sources familiar with the matter tell CTV News. Trudeau was concerned that Joyal wasn’t committed to protecting rights that have flown out of interpretation of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, particularly LGBTQ2 rights and even abortion access, neither of which are specifically enshrined in the Charter. Wilson-Raybould not only wanted Joyal named to the court to fill the vacancy left by Justice Beverley McLachlin’s resignation, she believed Joyal should replace McLachlin as the top court’s chief justice, a position that caused Trudeau to question his justice minister’s judgment, the sources said. According to the Canadian Press, WilsonRaybould wrote a 60-page memo to Trudeau advocating for Joyal. Joyal issued a statement this afternoon confirming he applied for the seat on the court but said he later withdrew his name from consideration. “Ultimately, I had to withdraw my application for personal reasons, due to my wife’s metastatic breast cancer,” he wrote. “I fear that someone is using my previous candidacy to the Supreme Court of Canada to further an agenda unrelated to the appointment process. This is wrong.” It is unclear when Joyal withdrew his application. Alberta judge Sheilah Martin was named to court in November 2017 and Justice Richard Wagner became chief justice. The disagreement over the appointment casts new light on the erosion of the relationship between Trudeau and Wilson-Raybould that culminated in her move out of the Justice portfolio and appointment as Veterans Affairs minister earlier this year. Wilson-Raybould, who later resigned from cabinet, has claimed she was subject to inappropriate political pressure from senior members of the government to grant SNCLavalin a remediation agreement to avoid criminal prosecution on corruption charges. Wilson-Raybould denied to CTV News that there was any conflict over the Supreme Court appointment and said that the selection of a new Supreme Court judge is ultimately a decision for the prime minister. “In this process there are typically CONFIDENTIAL conversations and communica-

VANCOUVER - British Columbia’s housing policies are allowing landlords to evict drug users in Vancouver’s rooming houses and there’s little or no recourse for people to defend themselves against a practice that is often illegal and creates a risk of overdose, a new study says. The study by the BC Centre on Substance Use says low-income tenants living in private and non-profit single-room occupancy units in the Downtown Eastside are targeted specifically for their drug use and often evicted without notice or they are given just a verbal notice. Research scientist Ryan McNeil, one of six authors of the study, said dispute resolution measures under the Residential Tenancy Act can be inaccessible, especially for people who have become homeless and can’t file their paperwork in a timely manner. Evictions leading to homelessness can also mean people lose touch with their trusted drug dealer, often leading to a change in patterns that involves more use of the highly addictive stimulant crystal meth or injecting while they’re dope sick, McNeil said Tuesday. “People’s lives are thrown into chaos. All of the routines, the patterns that people establish to negotiate using drugs under criminalization to make money to support themselves or just live their day-to-day lives, are just thrown out the window.” The study involving 50 people living in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside was published Tuesday in the International Journal of Drug Policy and completed after a year of data collection that ended in 2016, when the province declared a public health emergency after a sharp spike in overdose deaths. “We were doing this work right as the crisis was hitting Vancouver and one of the saddest moments was realizing that we weren’t finding people for follow-up interviews because they had died. And if that doesn’t lay out the life and death stakes of evictions, I don’t know what does,” McNeil said. “One of the challenges that we encountered with this study is just understanding the scope of evictions in the Downtown Eastside,” he said. “The reality is that these aren’t documented anywhere and that’s incredibly concerning.”
Vancouver’s bylaws define so-called singleroom occupancy units as hotels or rooming houses with less than about 320 square feet that typically include shared bathrooms and come without full kitchens. The units are considered necessary affordable housing for people who would otherwise be on the street but deplorable conditions in some hotels make them unlivable. The study says noise complaints and breaches of building policies were among the most commonly cited reasons for eviction but enforcement was prejudicial against drug users and building policies, such as those involving curfews, were not typical in other types of rental housing. The study cites the story of a 54-year-old transgender woman who tried to comply with unfair rules regarding her belongings after she had moved from a larger apartment and tried to keep her things organized but was still evicted. “The manager said I had to go to (a shelter) while she threw my things away.” DJ Larkin, an experienced housing rights lawyer who was an adviser on the study, said landlords have all the power so the law must be changed to provide some rights to people who face prejudice simply because they are poor and use drugs. “The power imbalance is one of the fundamental reasons why provincial reform is necessary and I also think it’s an answer to people who say ‘Why should landlords have to have someone who they don’t like as a tenant?’ None of that is relevant to whether or not there should be adequate protections in place to protect the rule of law and protect fairness,” she said. Jean Swanson, a Vancouver councillor and former longtime anti-poverty and tenants’ activist in the Downtown Eastside, said most people living in the neighbourhood don’t know their tenancy rights. Some supportive housing run by non-profit organizations are excluded from the Residential Tenancy Act she said, calling that a “travesty.” Swanson said she is considering bringing in a motion that would give full tenancy rights to all tenants. Cache of firearms found at Christchurch man’s home, and he later dies from a stab wound after police surrounded his car. New Zealand police launched a “high-priority” investigation on Wednesday to find out whether a man who died after an early morning standoff with officers had links to the mosque attacks that killed 50 people. Police raided the 54-year-old man’s home on Tuesday night and found a cache of firearms after receiving a tip-off from the public about “suspicious behaviour”, Police Commissioner Mike Bush said in a statement. “A high priority investigation is under way to
Homicide detectives have taken over the investigation into a crash in South Surrey that left three people dead Tuesday morning. In a statement, the RCMP said it responded to a report of a single-vehicle collision on the 32 Avenue Diversion under the Highway 99 overpass.“Upon arrival, frontline officers determined all three occupants of the vehicle were deceased,” police said, adding that the cause of the collision is not yet known. he victims of the crash have not been iden-
tified. In a follow-up statement issued at around 3 p.m., Mounties said the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team had been called, but did not say why the incident has been deemed suspicious. The investigation has closed down 32 Avenue between 152 Street and King George Boulevard. Members of the public are being asked to avoid the area. Mounties said the area will remain closed for an “undetermined amount of time.” Source: bc.ctvnews.ca
tions -- back and forths between the PM and the AG on potential candidates for appointment,” she said in an email. “I do however find it extremely worrisome why you are even asking such questions and where you received any such information. Commentary / reporting in this regard with respect to a SCC appointment(s) could compromise the integrity of the appointments process and potentially sitting Justices.” Joyal is a former provincial Crown attorney who in 2011 was appointed to the position of Chief Justice of the Manitoba Court of the Queen’s Bench by Stephen Harper’s Conservative government. The Prime Minister’s Office was concerned about views Joyal expressed in a speech to the Canadian Constitution Foundation’s Law and Freedom Conference in the January 2017, in which he discussed about the way courts were interpreting the Charter, ushered in by Trudeau’s father. “It may be one of the bitter ironies of Pierre Elliott Trudeau’s Nation Building strategy of the 1980s, that despite the celebration and promotion of the Charter, it has led to an institutional imbalance that dilutes a source of Canadian distinctiveness,” he said in the speech. Joyal argued for a rebalancing the relationship between the courts and legislative branch. “I would hope and have every reason to believe, that this would signal the beginning of a true dialogue with the courts, where the resulting policies would, I suspect, reflect a traditionally pragmatic and uniquely Canadian mix of liberal and non-liberal values.” His speech raised concerns that Joyal, if appointed, would be less willing to protect rights that are based on a broader interpretation of the Charter. Joyal’s elevation to the chief justice of the Supreme Court would have been unusual, as the position is typically filled from current members of the court. The Prime Minister’s Office declined to comment on the matter. Source: CTV News
determine whether or not the deceased man posed a threat to the community,” said Bush. They stopped the man in his car just outside the city of Christchurch and began negotiations that lasted for about three hours. Police eventually approached the vehicle and found the man critically injured with a stab wound that soon claimed his life. They did not explain how he got the wound but a knife was located in the vehicle. There were no firearms in the car, however, which was also cleared by explosives experts. Source:: Al.Jazera..com

AICP Celebrates Isra’ and Mi^raj (1440H)at Surrey Arts Centre
The miracle of Isra’ & Mi^raj is one of the greatest miracles that Allah ta^ala has granted our master Muhammad, sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam, and blessed his nation with. So, it is but natural for Muslims to observe such an occasion; especially that the memory of this great miracle comes in difficult times our Muslim nation is going through. A time when every Muslim should be attentive to protecting his creed, and sanctities and to line up behind the true rulings of our great Religion. It is but natural for the memory of this great miracle to remind us of our close ties to our Aqsa and that its people still grunt under an aggressive unjust occupation. Being the leading Islamic association it is, the Association of Islamic Charitable Projects proudly observed the memory of the great miracle of Isra’ and Mi^raj with an amazing celebration at Surrey Arts Centre on Sunday, March 24th, This year’s celebration was under the banner of “Journey of Enlightenment” and was beautifully prepared, presented and organized by AICP and renowned Islamic Chants Group hosting an entertaining event enjoyed by a full house of diverse attendees and participants of the Muslim community. Recitation from the blessed Qur’an com-
menced this blessed occasion, then praising the Prophet in many heartrending Islamic Praises (Madih chants). His Eminence Shaykh Abdur-Rahman emphasized in his speech the fact that Allah granted His Messenger this great miracle of Isra’ and Mi^raj to honor him sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam by showing him the wonders of the upper world and to raise his rank contrary to the claim that it was intended to reach a place Allah resides in – we seek refuge with Allah from that. It is a fact that the belief of the Muslims is that Allah exists without a place and the fact that the Prophet ascended to heaven does not mean that Allah is there. Allah created places so He does not need any. Allah exists without a place because He created the places so He does not need them. The great Companion, who was raised and taught by the prophet, the fourth Caliph, our master ^Aliyy Ibn Abi Talib may Allah reward his deeds, said what means: Allah existed eternally and there was no place, and He is now as He was [i.e., without a place]. (Imam Abu Mansoorul Baghdaadiyy related it in his book Al-Farqu Baynal Firaq). Imam Zaynul ^Abideen `Aliyy Ibnul Imamul Husayn Ibn ^Aliyy Ibn Abi Talib, who is the
grandson of the Prophet, sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam, is among the best of the Salaf said about Allah what means: O Allah, You are clear of all imperfection. You are Allah the One Who no place contains You. (Documented in his treatise as-Saheefah asSajjaadiyyah). Imam Abu Hanifah, one of the authorities of the Salaf, said: Allah existed eternally and there was no place. He existed before creating the creation. He existed, and there was no place, creation, or a thing. He is the Creator of everything. (Al-Fiqhul Absat) The belief of the Muslims is that Allah exists without a place. Muslims should be warned about some books of some misleading information, such as a book attributed falsely to Ibn ^Abbas, named “Kitab al-Mi^raj” which means: The book of Mi^raj. Shaykh drew attention to lessons deduced from the story of Pharaoh’s daughter hairdresser lessons of bravery, courage, and fearlessness of standing up to cruelty, oppression, and unjust practices. He also stressed on the significance of the ‘Aqsa mosque for Muslims. In a collaboration between the students of AICP-Al-Hidayah and TIES (The Islamic Education Schools) presented a very remarkable sketch-play about Al- ^Aqidah
as-Salahiyyah (The creed of as-Sultan Salah-ud-Din al-Ayyubiyy). It is the creed of Muslims, that as-Sultan Salah-ud-Din ordered it be broadcasted from the minarets after Adhan. This practice continued for a long period after his death. The AICP seizes the opportunity to emphasize the call for unity and a unified speech towards piety and renouncing extremism of all sorts. Our large number will not be an effective strength unless we function united and we shall not be united unless our hearts meet on the fundamentals of the belief and the principles of faith applying the saying of the Almighty:( Interpreted as (Call to the path of your Lord with wisdom and good advice), and to the saying of our noble Prophet: “Facilitate things for the people and do not make things difficult for them; be kind and lenient with the people and do not be hard on them, and give the people good tidings not repulse them” On this great occasion, the AICP asks Allah to grant Muslims sincerity, more beneficial knowledge, and prosperity. We ask Allah to bestow on us the bounty of entering Paradise without torture and being with Prophet Muhammad sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam.

Pakistani-Canadians pledge $285-300k for Pakistan’s Dams Fund in historic crowd Report By: Misbah Naseer ... In the water which Allah sent down from the Heavens and brought with it life to Earth after being dead and gave life in it to every kind of land animal; [Quran 2.164] Life on Earth cannot exist without water. Yet, 844 million people today do not have access to basic drinking water. Due to many factors including overpopulation, water wastage and climate change, many countries are already facing water scarcity or on their way to become waterstressed. Researchers have predicted that Pakistan will reach absolute water scarcity by 2025 and is on its way to becoming the most waterstressed country in the region by the year 2040. In 2018, learning about the immediate threat of water shortage during a court case about a damn, then Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Saqib Nisar ordered immediate work on the construction of Diamer-Bhasha and Mohmand dams and appealed to the general public to donate for the cause. An account with court’s registrar was established to collect donations. The cause has received its full endorsement from Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Imran Khan who has appealed to Pakistanis worldwide to donate to the cause. On March 24, a fundraiser was organized at Bombay Banquet Hall in Surrey by the BC Chapter of I am Pakistan Worldwide movement (IAPWM) which was established to promote awareness about dam fund and urge overseas Pakistanis to make donations to the dam fund. Three big associations including Pakistani Canadian Cultural Association, Pakistani Canadian Women’s society and Friends of Pakistan Canada Association joined hands and helped in making this event of 1000 + people a huge success. Hasan Alam and Saima Naz hosted the beautiful evening which started with the recitation of the Holy Quran followed by singing of national anthems of Pakistan and Canada by young children. Various community members including Bilal Cheema, Asad Syed and Zahir Mahil offered their thanks to Pakistani Canadians as well as many Indo-Canadians and other ethnic community members who came to support the event. Ahmed Ali Syed, founder and chairman of IAPWM spoke about the importance of this
cause and emphasized that transparency and accountability will be key in all fundraising activities. Faisal Javed Khan, Member of Senate of Pakistan also spoke at the event and described the dire need of water in Pakistan and the determination of the current government of Pakistan to bring the dam project to fruition. The keynote speaker of the event was Ret. Chief Justice, Mian Saqib Nisar, the man who has championed the cause. He spoke about the basic right of a human being to have access to clean water and the role of judiciary to ensure the fundamental rights of the citizens are met. He thanked everyone for the support and encouraged everyone to generously support the fund. The fund-raising efforts were spearheaded by Rizwan Samad who had specially come from Seattle for the event. Local Punjabi community did a vital role in this fundraising for Dams. Mr. Gosal Singh owner of York Centre Surrey, he donated $10, 000 dollars and promised to keep continued his support for this noble cause and said if in next 4 years Imran Khan will be Prime Minister of Pakistan, he will donate ten thousand more donation next year. Imran Khan two Cricket Bats were also auctioned in this event, one for 10K and other for 15 K. Br, Fareed Ali donated fifty thousands dollars for the Dam fund. Allah gives everyone rewards for their good deeds. Ameen. His passionate pleas for support played a big role in raising close to $285-300,000 for the dam funds. Remembering the Khaksar Martyrs of British India – Rare Photos Released
N
By Nasim Yousaf o powerful ruler transfers power unless his/her reign is threatened and he/she can no longer continue. Allama Mashriqi’s private army of Khaksars in British India was indeed instrumental in bringing about the end of the British Raj in the Indian sub-continent. On March 19, 1940, a large number of Khaksar freedom fighters were massacred while marching in protest of restrictions imposed on their activities (which were meant to bring freedom to the Indian subcontinent). In order to mark this historic day, rare photos of the Khaksar Movement (Khaksar Tehrik), which were part of a historic Khaksar album, have been made available from my collection at the following web site: https://www.facebook.com/ KhaksarMovement.1. These pictures, captured during the 1930s, depict Mashriqi and his Khaksar Movement’s fight against the British Raj. They provide a snapshot of the Khaksar movement and its activities, as the Movement rose to prominence and became the most powerful private army the Indian sub-continent has ever known. In 1930, Allama Mashriqi founded the Khaksar Movement to end British rule in the Indian sub-continent. The Khaksar Movement sought to instill a spirit of discipline and unity among the masses; the Khaksars wore uniforms, carried spades (symbolizing dignity and power of the common man), and held parades and mock wars to inspire Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, and other communities and prepare them to seek indepence. The Khaksars, hailing from all faiths, sects, genders, ages, and classes worked tirelessly to mobilize the public towards freedom. In support of their efforts, thousands of copies of Khaksar photo albums were published and distributed among the Khaksars and to the masses in villages and cities. Photo slides were also displayed in cinemas. Furthermore, the Khaksars used to organize public gatherings across the Indian subcontinent to show Khaksar activities and photos and also to distribute Khaksar pam-
phlets, flyers, and copies of the “Al-Islah” newspaper. Through such endeavors, the Khaksars were able to enroll over five million people into the Movement; the Movement spread all over the Indian sub-continent and established branches across many regions around the world – from Asia to Africa to Europe (specific countries are listed in various historical documents). Creating such a large army (even larger than many present-day armies) without a formal military academy or funding (from domestic or foreign sources) was unprecedented. With its rapid growth and remarkable influence in India and overseas, the Khaksar Tehrik became a grave threat to the powerful British Empire. As Mashriqi moved to overturn British rule, on March 19, 1940, Mashriqi and his two sons, along with many Khaksars, were arrested; it is on this same date that police killed or injured a large number of Khaksars in Lahore (including Mashriqi’s third son, Ehsanullah Khan Aslam, who later died). More details on the massacre are reported in my published works, for example, “Khaksar and Jallianwala Bagh Massacres: The Bloodbaths that Ignited the Freedom Movement.” In order to further suppress the movement, Khaksar materials, including a large number of the Movement’s photo albums were confiscated. Copies of some of the seized albums were sent to the British rulers (for example, the Viceroy of India Lord Linlithgow, relevant authorities in London, and British Governors in India). Following Mashriqi’s arrest, the Viceroy of India held a conference with high officials to discuss and formulate an action plan with regards to the Khaksar threat; those present at the said meeting (besides the Viceroy) were: the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, Sir Maurice Garnier Hallett (Governor of then United Provinces), Sir Henry Duffield Craik (Governor of Punjab), Sir Reginald Maxwell (Home Member), H.S. Stephenson (Secretary to the Governor of the United Provinces [U.P.]), and Sir John
Gilbert Laithwaite (Viceroy’s Private Secretary). They discussed the serious threat Mashriqi’s army had created for British rule and devised a strategy to crush the Movement. The British undertook a number of strong steps to try and stop the Khaksar movement. Since they controlled the media in India, they launched a vigorous anti-Mashriqi and anti-Khaksar campaign. Mashriqi, who was once the Under Secretary for the Education Department and was offered Knighthood and an Ambassadorship, was now called a “rebel” or “dictator” or “fascist.” The Khaksars were also falsely referred to as “fifth columnists” or “terrorists.” Foreign newspapers also followed suit. For example, on September 19, 1944, Australian newspaper The News published an item about the Khaksars under the title “India’s Three Million Lawful Fascists” (along with falsely labeling the Khaksars as fascists, the paper underreported the size of the movement, which by this time was over five million people). This propaganda and suppression backfired and the freedom movement instead gained even greater momentum. Mashriqi’s Khaksar Movement also brushed aside all the Government actions and propaganda and remained steadfastly committed to their mission of bringing freedom to the Indian sub-continent. The Movement began a vigorous resistance and civil disobedience campaign. And when Mashriqi was finally released from prison, he became even more determined to topple British rule and re-
By: Gurpreet Singh On March 23 Spice Radio honoured two inspiring women for standing up against racism as the world grapples with growing bigotry. As part of its annual campaign “Raise Your Hands Against Racism”, Burnaby-based Spice Radio held this year’s event at Surrey City Hall where Indigenous activist Cecilia Point and former Vancouver Park Board Commissioner Niki Sharma were presented with special awards. Point has been active in grassroots level movements, such as campaign for justice to the missing and murdered indigenous women, while Sharma had challenged racism directed at her with courage and conviction. These women were presented with the shields by anti-racism activist Alan Dutton and Georgia Straight Editor Charlie Smith on behalf of Spice Radio. The two men were the recipients of the last year’s Spice Radio awards.
The event started with a moment of silence for the victims of the Christchurch attacks on mosques that left 50 people dead. Spice Radio CEO Shushma Datt opened the event with a special tribute to those gunned down by a white supremacist in Christchurch, and the three Indian revolutionaries Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru who were executed on March 23, 1931 for waging war against British occupation of India. Later, Vishaljeet Kaur sang a song dedicated to the three martyrs. Datt launched this campaign in 2015 on the birth anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr. The campaign aims to link the fight against racism with Holi – a Hindu festival of colours that helps in eradicating caste and class barriers in India. This year, the festival of Holi fell on March 21, which is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
Those present on the occasion included BC Minister for Labour Harry Bains, Parliamentary Secretary for Multiculturalism Ravi Kahlon and Surrey Greentimbers MLA Rachna Singh. Kahlon formally announced the proclamation of March 21 as “Raise Your Hands Against Racism Day” in recognition of the campaign started by Spice Radio. Earlier, BC Premier John Horgan gave Spice Radio a Multiculturalism and Anti-Racism Award under the Business category, at an event held in Vancouver on the evening of March 21. Significantly, Horgan had kick started this year’s campaign by visiting the Spice Radio studios in January. Kahlon emphasized that such campaigns have become even more relevant considering what happened in Christchurch on March 15. Both Point and Sharma also observed that the fight against racism must
fused to engage in impractical negotiations or bargains with the rulers. He rigorously worked until British rule came to an end in 1947. During his political life, Mashriqi endured imprisonments, warnings, intimidations, restrictions, and life threatening attacks, but still he refused to relent. The recently released Khaksar images are significant because they feature Mashriqi and the Khaksars participating in various activities – parading (in uniform with spades) in the streets to bring up-rise among the masses, engaging in military activities, displaying cannons as a demonstration of their intent and power, and holding mock wars to show their preparation for the battle to overthrow the British Raj. The strength of Mashriqi’s disciplined private army also generated great interest among prominent men, who visited the Khaksar camps at different times. Some of the photos show these men at Khaksar camps watching their activities. Among the visitors were the Premier of then North West Frontier Province Sir Abdul Qayyum Khan, Punjab Premier Sir Sikander Hayat Khan, Bacha Khan, and Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. The availability of these rare and extraordinary Khaksar photos on social media shall go a long way in educating the public about the activities of these unsung heroes of the freedom movement. The writer, Nasim Yousaf, is a grandson of Allama Mashriqi and a researcher based in the US.

Among others who spoke at the event were Spice Radio General Manager and Production Director Sudhir Datta, Newscaster and Talk Show Host Safeeya Pirani, another talk show host Gurpreet Singh, budding radio reporter Sohila, Rochelle Prasad from Camp We Empower, community activist Suresh Kurl and well-known physician Arun Garg. Kurl shed a light on the significance of Holi and its connection with the spirit behind anti-racism movement. The members of South Asian Arts and Shiamak Vancouver gave free performances. The event culminated with the participants dipping their hands in colour and leaving their hand-prints on a sheet of white paper along with statements against racism and hate.

Israel-Hamas ceasefire holds amid tense calm in Gaza Strip
Palestinian rocket fired at southern Israel, which responds with an air strike, but truce appears to hold on Wednesday. Gaza City - A Palestinian rocket struck Israel and the military responded with an air strike despite a ceasefire announced by Hamas, but the exchange of fire appeared to end overnight on Wednesday. There were no immediate reports of any damage or casualties from the latest rocket fire, which the Israeli army said was launched at around 8pm (18:00 GMT). Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other groups said “the rocket that hit near Ashkelon was the work of an individual and the factions are committed to calm” - as long as Israel is.
A security source in Gaza said an air strike hit a Hamas military base in Khan Yunis following the projectile launched at Israel. A fraught quiet has settled over the Gaza Strip after Israeli air raids on the besieged coastal enclave that began on Monday after a rocket strike on a home in central Israel. An Egyptian-brokered ceasefire, announced around 19:00 GMT on Monday, was confirmed by a Hamas spokesperson, but the exchange of fire between armed groups in Gaza and the Israeli military continued, residents in the strip said. The latest flare-up took place after a longrange missile was fired from Gaza into the Israeli community of Mishmeret - 20km
north of Tel Aviv - early Monday, wounding seven people. No group from Gaza has claimed responsibility, but Israel blamed Hamas, the movement that rules the strip, and deployed tanks and reservists at the Israeli fence east of the Gaza Strip. Throughout Monday night, Israeli warplanes targeted Hamas and Islamic Jihad positions with air raids. Hamas leader Ismail Haniya’s office was destroyed in the attack, as well as several residential buildings. The Israeli army confirmed its warplanes carried out 15 bombardments in the Gaza Strip. According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, seven Palestinians were injured. Sameh al-Ghazali, a Gaza resident, lost his
Ankara’s stop-gap move to restore confidence in lira helped send London overnight swap rate rocketing to 1,200 percent. Turkey will keep directing its banks to withhold lira liquidity from a key foreign market at least until after local elections on Sunday, sources have told the Reuters news agency, as the government intensifies efforts to defend the currency, which plunged last week. The government’s stop-gap measure to restore confidence in the lira, which remains
unsteady after a crisis last year, helped send the London overnight swap rate rocketing to 1,200 percent on Wednesday. That was by far its highest on record and so high that economists said it was no longer based on actual trading. That presented a massive hurdle to foreign investors looking to bet against the Turkish currency or to hedge or close out positions, so they sold off holdings in Turkish stocks and bonds which came under heavy pressure for a fourth straight day. The government’s move is temporary and aimed at heading off “speculative attacks”, one of the three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.Investors and economists, however, responded with another round of calls for longer-lasting reforms to the economy to dissuade a growing number of Turks from losing confidence in their currency and turning to foreign cash. However, the Turkish banking association head denied the reports in a statement
to Reuters, saying lira swap rates were not surging due to banks withholding liquidity from foreign banks. Huseyin Aydin said the reason behind the rise in lira swap rates was that there was not enough lira for foreign banks to buy dollars, and added that Turkey had shown the necessary stance against a speculative attack on the lira. “Investors who try to buy large amounts of foreign currency quickly with the thought that the lira is cheap and will remain that way were not able to find lira for the foreign currency that they acquired,” Aydin said. While the lira came under fresh pressure on Wednesday, weakening more than two percent to 5.4440 against the dollar in volatile trading, steps taken by the central bank in recent days have succeeded in erasing its steep losses on Friday. Last year, the lira lost nearly 30 percent of its value. “When liquidity returns to the market, participants will be able to express their sentiment towards the lira in an unconstrained
home in Gaza City. ”We were shocked when we received a phone call from the Israeli army last night telling us to evacuate our home within seconds,” the father of one told Source: Al Jazeera.

way,” said Piotr Matys, emerging market forex strategist at Rabobank. “It is crucial that [Turkey] starts implementing reforms as soon as possible after the local elections to restore confidence in the lira.” Others in the market said foreign investors, squeezed out of the foreign exchange (FX) swap market, sold stocks and bonds to get hold of lira and close out positions. Turkey’s main BIST 100 index tumbled seven percent, with the banking index down eight percent, in its fourth straight day of losses. In another reflection of growing investment risks, the benchmark 10-year bond yield rose to 18.72 percent, its highest since October. he London overnight swap rate spiked to 1,200 percent from 330 percent on Tuesday and 24 percent just last week. The weekly rate jumped to 200 percent from last week’s 22 percent, Refinitiv Eikon data showed. Source: Al Jazeera.
Trudeau Shuts Down Second Investigation Into Snc-Lavalin Corruption Scandal Ottawa, ON – The Honourable Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and the Official Opposition, issued the following statement after Liberals on the House of Commons Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics shut down its investigation into the SNC-Lavalin corruption scandal: “For the second time in two weeks, Justin Trudeau has shut down a parliamentary investigation into his involvement in the SNCLavalin corruption scandal.
“Last week, he used his Liberal majority on the Justice Committee to end that committee’s investigation before it could hear again from former Attorney General Jody WilsonRaybould.“He pulled the same stunt today at the Ethics Committee, having his Liberal MPs vote down a Conservative motion to have Ms. Wilson-Raybould and former Treasury Board President Jane Philpott to testify.“Despite several days of Liberals publicly urging both Ms. Wilson-Raybould and Ms. Philpott to speak up – to ‘put up or shut
up,’ as one MP put it – Liberals voted to prevent them both from being heard. “There can now be no doubt that Mr. Trudeau is supressing the most incriminating details of the SNC-Lavalin corruption scandal. He is more afraid of the truth than the consequences of his ongoing coverup. “Mr. Trudeau cannot run and hide forever. Conservatives will continue to use every tool available to us to hold him to account and get the answers Canadians deserve.” By:Daniel Schow
BC Liberal MLA Jas JohalOnused an offensive term to describe BC NDP MLAs of South Asian descent. March 25, BC Liberal MLA Jas Johal used backed down and withdrew his remarks in misleading people in Surrey than advocating an offensive term to describe BC NDP MLAs of South Asian descent. When asked this morning on Red FM whether that language was unparliamentary, Johal said: “No, no because, what is chamcha? Chamcha is sycophant. If I use the English term, sycophant, that’s not unparliamentary… it’s not unparliamentary, not at all.” (Red FM, March 26) But just two hours later, under pressure from BC NDP Minister Jinny Sims, Jas Johal
the legislature. (Video) BC NDP MLA Jagrup Brar says Johal is misleading people in Surrey. “It’s shameful that Jas Johal is saying one thing to our community on the radio, and saying the opposite just two hours later in the legislature,” says Brar. “He insisted his offensive remarks were ok, even though he knows they weren’t. Why isn’t he telling people in Surrey the truth?” Brar says that Johal is spending more time
for his own community. “Mr. Johal should spend less time spreading misinformation in Surrey and more time looking after his own constituents,” says Brar. “The BC Liberals ignored our community for years, and that’s why people rejected them. With Premier John Horgan, we’re delivering for Surrey by eliminating tolls, fast tracking new schools, and adding a new urgent care centre so people get healthcare faster.”

Spring Break!
A
By: Asma Shmas fter the cold winter, spring break is welcomed by all children and most parents. There are the obvious issues of the large workforce taking vacation days at almost the same time. The difficulty is multiplied by a lot more for single and nuclear parents. With this precious time ahead of us, it is important to keep an open mind with our collegues and friends with different family systems. Family Pains The difficulties we face with vacation times reminds us of the old system where children were looked after by the elders of the family on a daily basis. Marriages were decided by elders who created suitors to ensure that family relationships would be strengthened and social backgrounds match creating the least amount of friction and maximum fluidity moving forward. The new additions and veteran family members were all living under one roof and managing chores together including the children and their needs. The expenses were usually shared which helped reduce a certain amount of stress that is prevalent in a large majorities homes. All occasions were celebrated together including birthdays, anniversaries, accomplishments, and also failures. It sounds like a dream come true for most us struggling to make payments on our growing credit card bills, daycare costs, and the tiredness from working jobs we sometimes do not wish to be involved with if given a choice. It seems that now we are on our own. It often seems that most of us are broken, struggling, and exhausted from our daily lives. Parents are working on their own in positions they do not enjoy. Children are growing up in daycares, it seems, on their own. Sometimes, children cannot adapt to this dynamic and sometimes it’s the parents and their relatives who cannot. More often than not, it seems that our children over generations prefer to be in the company of smart phones rather than their family. Who or rather what is responsible?
y O U TH
As technology progresses, our lifestyle and work ethic has changed along with how learn and deal with situations. Take this opportunity to communicate with your children and family in ways that they understand and listen today. The same technology can be used to learn and unwind together. Video games and educational applications have become advanced to engage its users of all ages. Learn a language together, build something together, or simply unwind and laugh at programs together. Generational Gap The general gap is eternal. We faced it with our parents, grandparents, our own children and our grandchildren. It is one of life’s only eternal truth and constant. By the time we understand our children, they will be at an age that they understand us. And by the time they understand their children, we’ll be long gone. The years in between is what we need to work on conquering. There is always a lack of understanding on all parties in this issue. There are issues such as intolerance, stubbornness, selfishness, greed, peer pressure, and always the problems with money. Before we blame our parents, we should remember it is a generational gap and both generations are at fault. Family is the most important aspect of our life. It is what makes all those negatives worth the pain and suffering. It is the base of our society and many cultures which has survived countless generational gaps. Lets be the change in our generation to understand our young members and treat our elders with respect and kindness. Let’s keep an open mind and agree to be patient in understand where they come from so that we progress to a better future. Info: Asma Shums <asmashums@gmail.com

Positive Vibes!

can intend to have quality time with your family and friends with no distractions or limitations. You can intend to have a fun and brilliant day. You can intend to have a calm and peaceful day. You can intend to learn something new or be helpful to someone. Whatever it is just be clear about what it is you want your day to be. In order to create, manifest, and attract it, you must first align your heart, mind, and spirit with your intention. In other words, you truly need to feel it! Many people don’t understand the power of thoughts, because they live every day on autopilot, doing most things out of habit, and therefore they create their reality unconsciously as if they’re wearing a blindfold. But whether we’re aware of it or not, we create our reality with our thoughts and behaviour. This means we have the power to choose to be a conscious, mindful creator and change our reality to what we really want it to be. Remember, you choose your thoughts, you choose your behaviour, you choose the outcome. And every choice you make determines how you feel physically, mentally, and emotionally!!
e go to sleep each night and wake up in the morning to a new day with new opportunities - a day which is filled with power and freedom to choose. The minute we wake up, we can choose to get out of bed and make the most of our day or feel dread about the day ahead. This is nobody’s choice but ours. Generally, the way we start our day influences how we feel for the rest of the day. When you wake up in the morning, take a few minutes to take a few deep breaths and find something that you’re grateful for (your children, partner, your health or nature outside your window). Take this time to be thankful for all that you have in your life instead of wasting your energy on thinking about what you don’t have. Instead of pouncing straight out of bed, simply observe your breath. Breathe in for a count of 4 to 5 and breathe out also for a count of 4 to 5 allowing everything to drop away. Notice how your breath enters your body, notice how your breath leaves your body, and notice the little pause between each breath. This will allow you to create a sense of peace within and it will also help get you into a good head space before your feet touch the ground. It feels good and it’s an amazing way to consciously set your energy and intention towards your day moving, follow this with a nutritious breakfast to kick-start your metabolism and fuel your body to face the day ahead. Get clear about your intentions for the day. For example info:shabnam@skcounselling.ca you can intend to have a productive day. You

Social Media and Teens: How Does Social Media Affect Teenagers’ Mental Health
T
By:Katie Hurley, LCSW he verdict is still out on whether social media is damaging to the mental health of teens. This is in part due to the lack of research. Some studies show that online connections with small groups of people can be beneficial to teens, while other research points to a rise in symptoms of anxiety, depression, and eating disorders. The other reason it’s difficult to get a good read on the issue is that social media is constantly changing and evolving. Plus, no long-term studies have been completed. So, we’re left making educated guesses based on current research. There’s just not enough data to back up the potential long-term pros and cons of living on “likes”. One study out of the University of Pittsburgh, for example, found a correlation between time spent scrolling through social media apps and negative body image feedback. Those who had spent more time on social media had 2.2 times the risk of reporting eating and body image concerns, compared to their peers who spent less time
on social media. The participants who spent the most time on social media had 2.6 times the risk. Results from a separate study from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine showed that the more time young adults spent on social media, the more likely they were to have problems sleeping and report symptoms of depression. And another small study of teens ages 13-18 from the UCLA Brain Mapping Center found that receiving a high number of likes on photos showed increased activity in the reward center of the brain. Further, teens are influenced to like photos, regardless of content, based on high numbers of likes. Bottom line: It feels good to be “liked” and herd mentality is big on social media. Like what others like and you’re in. The Upside of Social Media for Teens There are some positive aspects to social media. It’s important to remember that teens are hardwired for socialization, and social media makes socializing easy and immediate. Teens who struggle with social skills, social anxiety, or who don’t have easy access to face-to-face socializing with other teens might benefit from connecting with other teens through social media.
Teens in marginalized groups—including LGBTQ teens and teens struggling with mental health issues—can find support and friendship through use of social media. When teens connect with small groups of supportive teens via social media, those connections can be the difference between living in isolation and finding support. The Downside Social Media Use by Teens Read enough of the current research and you’ll find that the negatives tend to feel bigger than the positives. While teens can use social media to connect and create friendships with others, they also confront cyberbullying, trolls, toxic comparisons, sleep deprivation, and less frequent face-toface interactions, to name a few. Too much time spent scrolling through social media can result in symptoms of anxiety and/or depression. Here’s how social media can be destructive: •Focusing on likes: The need to gain “likes” on social media can cause teens to make choices they would otherwise not make, including altering their appearance, engaging in negative behaviors, and accepting risky social media challenges. •Cyberbullying: Teens girls in particular are at risk of cyberbullying through use of social media, but teen boys are not immune. Cyberbullying is associated with depression, anxiety, and an elevated risk of suicidal thoughts. •Making comparisons: Though many teens know that their peers share only their highlight reels on social media, it’s very difficult
to avoid making comparisons. Everything from physical appearance to life circumstances to perceived successes and failures are under a microscope on social media. •Having too many fake friends: Even with privacy settings in place, teens can collect thousands of friends through friends of friends on social media. The more people on the friend list, the more people have access to screenshot photos, Snaps, and updates and use them for other purposes. There is no privacy on social media. •Less face time: Social interaction ski https://www.psycom.net/social-media-teenmental-health lls require daily practice, even for teens. It’s difficult to build empathy and compassion (our best weapons in the war on bullying) when teens spend more time “engaging” online than they do in person. Human connection is a powerful tool and builds skills that last a lifetime. There’s a happy medium in here somewhere. The key to helping teens learn to balance social media with real life friendships is to keep the lines of communication open and keep talking. Honest communication shows your teen that you are there to support, not to judge or lecture. It’s also important to walk the walk. Disconnect on weekends and show your teen that there is a whole world out there that doesn’t require a handheld screen. She may miss her phone a lot less than she thinks she will and this is a very good lesson to learn. Source: https://www.psycom.net/social-media-teen-mental-health

Pakistan’s Economy
By: Farooq Lakhani
It has been a tough year for Pakistan’s economy. Economic growth is expected to slow sharply this year to around 4% as against 5.8% in the previous year. Consumer spending, which accounts for over 70% of the economy has been negatively impacted due to declines in household incomes, both rural and urban. The agricultural economy was hit by water shortages which resulted in declining production of summer crops mainly cotton, rice and maize. Disposable incomes of urban households were squeezed as inflation accelerated due to currency depreciation impacting the cost of imports and increases in the prices of utilities, principally electricity and domestic gas. With the cost of healthcare and education mostly borne by households, one can imagine the budgetary pressures on middle and low income families.

They have played impor-
Industrial production experienced its first decline in almost a decade. The decline was widespread including consumer staples, discretionary goods, construction materials and automobiles. With shortfalls in tax revenue, the government was forced to cut back on development spending. Viewed from any angle, this was one of the severest declines in aggregate demand the economy has suffered. The country’s central bank regularly monitors the health of the economy through regular surveys of business and consumer confidence. The contraction in the economy is reflected in the latest data collected by the bank. Optimism amongst consumers and businesses which were at a peak in September 2018 declined sharply in the ensuing months and is now gradually recovering. Despite an advisory panel of experts, the

They continue to help shape our national story as Canadians, and on behalf of Canada’s Conservatives, I am honoured to wish everyone celebrating a Happy Pakistan Day!”
government has yet to establish policy direction other than recovering wealth accumulated via corruption. The existence of a large underground economy variously estimated to be 50-70% of the official gdp complicates matters. Given the significant share of undocumented businesses, there can be negative repercussions on output and employment in small and micro-enterprises during the transition phase to a more tax compliant economy. The immediate risks to the economy have been staved off by bilateral flows from friendly nations. Lack of clarity on policies pertaining to addressing deficits on the external accounts as well as its fiscal situation along with the interest rate and exchange rate outlook has compounded the prevailing
uncertainty. Recent polls have pegged the government’s popularity at 57% of the electorate. Almost 3 out of 4 voters consider the resolution of economic challenges to be the government’s overarching priority. Inflation, poverty and unemployment are top of mind. Balancing the burden of fixing the economy equitably among all segments and protecting the vulnerable constitutes the key challenge for the government.
