OW many conspiracy theories can one F-16 generate? The US news report indicating that India did not shoot down a Pakistani F-16 during postPulwama skirmishes has had the Indian interweb abuzz. Has the US falsely leaked this information to keep up F-16 sales? Where’s the missing war head? Is the US counting the F-16s from Jordan? Pakistanis, meanwhile, are feeling vindicated. The news also raised questions about Modi’s electoral prospects, with analysts suggesting the Indian prime minister’s F-16 fantasy could cost the BJP votes in the upcoming elections. Pakistan would be mistaken to place itself at the centre of those. The polls in many ways are an existential evaluation of what India is — a secular or religious nationalist polity — and what Modi has to offer, given that his promises of economic uplift and good governance have not panned out. Within this broader context, however, the Pakistan angle can clarify key questions about the BJP and its current political and ideological positioning under Modi. This point is well made in ‘The BJP and Indian Grand Strategy’, an essay by Abhijnan Rej and Rahul Sagar in a special report on the BJP published last week by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

O P I N I O N

Nature of the threat

Modi is merely elaborating on an existing trajectory. The authors argue that Hindu nationalist foreign policy has historically championed ‘hard power’. But this desire for military strength and assertiveness has coexisted with anxieties about modernity, which is perceived as a threat to the religious ties that unite Hindus, and drives the BJP’s protectionist and inward-looking social and economic policies. Rej and Sagar demonstrate that Modi has played out the Hindu nationalist preference for hard power in the context of Pakistan-India relations. This aspect of the BJP’s political ideology is arguably the driver of the theatrical responses to Uri and Pulwama: the did-they-didn’t-theyhappen 2016 surgical strikes; the contentious (non) targets of the air strikes in Balakot; the F-16 that wasn’t downed. (Modi’s endorsement of the Bollywood film about Uri, and his political use of its ‘how’s the josh?’ slogan is ironic because it further blurs the lines between fact and fiction; the silver screen version of the strikes has proved more politically expeditious for Modi, overshadowing questions about real events.) But as the authors point out, this muscular approach towards Pakistan is not a consistent position, and cannot comfortably be assumed

as the BJP’s foreign policy stance. While feigning josh vis-à-vis Pakistan, Modi has not significantly advanced India’s nuclear strategy or arsenal, strengthened or better equipped the armed forces, or addressed rivalries within the military bureaucracy; defence spending under Modi fell to 1.5 per cent of GDP in 201819, the lowest figure since 1962. Pakistanis should put Modi and the BJP’s hostile chestthumping within this broader perspective to better evaluate the nature and extent of the threat from across the eastern border. The high-visibility reactions on Pakistan can be understood as a platform to demonstrate allegiance to an established Hindu nationalist political position, but they do not mean that restraint or pragmatism are inconceivable. Simply consider the welcome progress (although recently interrupted) on the Kartarpur corridor, an avenue to keep lines of communication open with Pakistan, while furthering Modi’s broader agenda of what Rej and Sagar term religious diplomacy. The essay is also a reminder of how much that is political is driven by the personal. Modi is only the second BJP leader after Atal Behari Vajpayee who has had to articulate and implement a Hindu nationalist strategic and foreign policy,

and he has the dual burden of upholding a precedent and building a legacy. The decision to unleash hard power against post-nuclear Pakistan was, after all, first enacted by Vajpayee, with India’s actions in the Kargil war, and again through large-scale troop mobilisation following the 2001 attack on the Indian parliament. For all the hype around Modi’s anti-Pakistan stance, he is merely elaborating on an existing trajectory, without adding fresh policy ideas or new frames through which to broker the relationship with Pakistan. This additional context highlights that the anti-India sentiment in Pakistan is predominantly reactive, and responds to something that in itself is inconsistent and half-formed. Knowing that should serve as a reminder that Pakistan should carve out and implement its foreign policies on its own terms, and with its own interests and global ambitions in mind, rather than in opposition to what is at best a muddle, and at worst, a mirage. There is nothing to be gained by falling into the rhetorical traps laid by external actors, who are often addressing other (domestic or intra-party) audiences. As India goes to the polls, we can take a break, content that not everything is about us. By: Huma Yusuf

‘Divine Treasure’! By:Gulshan Aalani Most needed ‘Divine Treasure’ in the most corrupted, and polluted world. Divine Treasure consists of Divine Order that is above the order of human beings and human gods. There is nothing wrong in obtaining the Worldly Treasure for comfort and to live a happy life on this earth, but at the same time it is of utmost importance to obtain the ‘Divine Treasure’ that contains the healthy goodies, and most important Manual of instructions on how to travel safely to our final destiny with safety of our life and Soul that eventually ends up in the Hereafter and in the court of Almighty GOD-Creator of the Universe and our 1st. Worldly and Spiritual Boss

owner of the business of -7 Heavens and 7 Gates of Hell. The only way to reach our chosen destination is to follow the Divine instructions of how to live a clean life with integrity, and truthfulness. Disliking someone is O.K. but not to be hateful that inspires killing and to destroy. The logic is: While shopping we don’t like all the dresses but just one that we buy, but do we destroy all the other dresses that we don’t like? Instead of wasting time teaching SX. ED. -in the Schools, we should teach about the Divine Treasure that contains the life giving rules for safe living. Safety rules of right and wrong, good and evil. Lying, cheating, deceiving, stealing, religious financial frauds, business scams are forbidden in Divine presence-in HIS ‘Work place’. Where HIS security officers - the Angels are watching and recording every movement of every human being. Majority have no idea who their Creator GOD is, nor the Angels the protectors. The bitter results of such unethical practices are all around us proving when caught the grown ups are put in the most humiliating position, destroying the reputation, career and the family life. Nothing or no worldly gain is worth to such humiliation when caught.

Every human is given the divine rights to speak up against any wrong doings, stand up for the truth and never support the lies and criminal activities of any kind. Usually, the Whistle Blowers speakers of the truth are punished by the corrupted rulers who claim to be the Progressive, Pluralists, and caring Feminists but only in speeches not in action. That is proven by the worst treatment of former Attorney general Jody Wilson Raybould, who stood up for the Just Law and Order, despite the pressure from the Gov. authority to turn a blind eye towards an alleged criminal activity of SNS Lavalin. She is also blamed for secret telephone recording, which was for her ‘safety’ as she was harassed to go against the Justice system: “To give SNC Lavalin a deal to avoid criminal trial and prosecution for allegations of bribery and fraud charges”. Said the conservative M.P. Poilievre. The worst act of expelling two brave women Jody Wilson and Jane Philpott from the Liberal Caucus for standing up for the truth and ‘Rule of Law’. “Removal of them is the a ‘Betrayal of Justice”. Said Hon. Andrew Scheer. Of course undeniable unjust unethical act! As the threat of conspiracy of silence not tolerable by any. Is this the criminal Justice

reform? Portrayal of freedom of speaking up by the Bravest young women of ‘Daughters of Vote’, at the CPAC, organized by ‘Equal Voice Canada’. Every one of the 338 girls spoke so eloquently on important subjects of Climate change, Equality, Election system, Homelessness, Gender wage gap, Women trafficking, safety for Indigenous and Black Men and Women, gang violence etc.:“Oppressors oppressing people who are breaking a silence cannot be Feminist”. Said a young woman. “Women can change politicsstrong women stand up and speak the truth to the power and so how do we treat them that is the question Canadians are asking right now”. Said M.P. PM Khan accuses Israeli, Indian leadership of ‘moral bankruptcy’, illegal occupation of land for votes

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday assailed what he described as the “moral bankruptcy” of Indian and Israeli political leadership, accusing the incumbent parties of harbouring ambitions to illegally occupy land in the West Bank and Kashmir in defiance of international laws and “their own constitutions” for votes as both countries head to polls

this week.“When leaders in Israel and India show a moral bankruptcy in their readiness to annex occupied West Bank and IoK [Indian occupied Kashmir] in defiance of international law, United Nations Security Council resolutions, and their own Constitution for votes, don’t their people feel a sense of outrage and wonder how far they [the leaders] will go simply to win an election?” he asked. Israeli voters will head to the ballot boxes today for crucial parliamentary elections that will determine whether longtime Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains in power for a fifth term, which would make him Israel’s longest-ever serving leader, surpassing David Ben-Gurion. Netanyahu’s poll prospects, clouded by a series of looming corruption indictments, appear sunnier after US President Donald Trump’s recent recognition of Israeli sovereignty over Golan Heights, which Israel captured from Syria in 1967 and annexed in a shift that was never recognised internationally. The move sparked outrage across the Middle East.

Shahbaz finally suggests names for vacant ECP positions

ISLAMABAD: After wasting too much time in correspondence through their nominees and a week after receiving a direct letter from Prime Minister Imran Khan, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif on Tuesday finally proposed names for the appointment of members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) from Balochistan and Sindh. In a seven-page letter sent to the prime minister, Mr Sharif termed the first two letters sent to him by Mr Khan through an official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and his secretary a violation of the Constitution and then suggested six names for the two vacant positions in the ECP in response to the letter sent to him by the prime minister on April 1.Mr Sharif has proposed the names of Shah Mohammad Jatoi, president of the Balochistan High Court Bar Association; Mohammad Noor Meskanzai, former chief justice of the Balochistan High Court; and Mohammad Rauf Ata, a former advocate general for Balochistan, for the vacant post of the ECP member from the province.

For the appointment of ECP member from Sindh, the opposition leader has proposed the names of Abdul Rasool Memon, a retired judge of the Sindh High Court (SHC); Khalid Javed, a former president of the SHC Bar Association; and Noorul Haq Qureshi, a retired judge of the Islamabad High Court.

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday granted Punjab Assembly Opposition Leader Hamza Shahbaz pre-arrest bail till April 17 in the Ramzan Sugar Mills and Saaf Pani Company cases. The high court also ordered him to pay

surety bonds worth Rs10 million each and issued a notice to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) seeking its reply in the matter. A two-member bench of the high court headed by Justice Malik Shahzad Ahmad Khan heard two separate applications that the PML-N leader had submitted for pre-arrest bail earlier today. According to the bail petitions, Hamza was fearful of arrest by NAB in the two cases. It stated that previously NAB had “called politicians in one case and arrested them in another case”. The PML-N leader was fearful that the same would happen to him. During the hearing, Hamza’s lawyer revealed that in a notice issued last night, the provincial opposition leader was summoned by NAB in a money laundering and assets beyond means case today. The lawyer recalled that the LHC had granted Hamza bail in one of the cases against him. He said the PML-N leader had been indicted in the Ramzan Sugar Mills case and therefore they were fearful that NAB would arrest him. Source: dawn.com

LHC judge named in Panama Papers resigns

LAHORE: Justice Mohammad Farrukh Ifran Khan of the Lahore High Court on Tuesday tendered his resignation apparently to avoid possible removal by the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) in a reference. In his resignation addressed to the president of Pak istan, Justice Khan questioned the manner in which the council conducted proceedings against him, saying he had not been provided sufficient time to defend his case in violation of principles of natural justice. He said the council proceeded in an unfair,

arbitrary and summary manner in violation of the doctrine of fair trial and due process as enshrined in the Constitution. “The Honourable Supreme Judicial Council has not provided me sufficient time to procure affidavits, materials and witnesses, some of whom had to come from abroad and gave only three working days to produce my entire evidence in January 2019, which shows bias and predisposition of their mind which is against all principles of natural justice and free and fair opportunity to defend

myself, as it has caused prejudice to me by filing incomplete affidavits of my defence witnesses with limited information that could be gathered within deadline of three days,” the judge said in the resignation. He said the council recorded the statement of former attorney general Ashtar Ausaf Ali in his and his counsel’s absence, which amounted to misconduct, miscarriage of justice and tampering with the record of the council. Foreign journalists given access to madressah near site of Balakot strike A group of international journalists, mostly based in India, as well as the ambassadors and defence attachés of various countries on Wednesday visited the impact site of the Feb 26 Indian airspace violation near Jabba, Balakot, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Pakistani military, announced late evening. Director General (DG) ISPR Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor briefed the delegation on the events of the day of the attack, “negating repeated false Indian claims with ground realities”.

The visitors, according to the ISPR, were allowed to interact freely with students and teachers and saw for themselves that the madressah, where “innocent local children were getting education, stood on ground and was untouched”.The DG ISPR reiterated that “India should accept the reality, stay a responsible state for peace in the region and look inwards to identify reasons for the out-ofhand situation in Indian occupied Kashmir.” ”The international delegation also visited APS Swat — a state-of-the-art educational

facility established by Pakistan Army as a gift for the resilient people of Swat in recognition of their contributions and sacrifices in defeating terrorism as terrorists had specially targeted educational institutions during the unrest,” the ISPR press release stated. The group were also given a tour of Sabawoon, the army-run rehabilitation and deradicalisation centre, where “juvenile offenders are given psychological treatment” and nurtured back to normal life so they can become useful citizens of the society.

Amnesty: Lowest number of prisoners executed in 2018

Human rights organisation warns against complacency and said more needed to be done to abolish death penalty. At least 690 prisoners were executed in 20 countries in 2018, marking a 31 percent fall from at least 993 from the previous year, according to Amnesty International that reported the fewest deaths by capital punishment in at least a decade. A total of 2,531 death sentences were also imposed in 54 countries last year, decreasing from 2,591 recorded worldwide in 2017 according to a report published on Wednesday by the UK-based rights group that hailed the significant decline in global executions. As in previous years, China, where figures believed to be in the thousands are classified as a state secret, remained the most prolific executor, Amnesty said, followed by Iran, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam and Iraq - accounting for 78 percent of total reported executions. “It’s very encouraging that known executions were the lowest at the end of 2018, but it is challenging to define clear reasons for the decreases and whether these reductions will be sustained in the coming years,” Oluwatosin Popoola, Amnesty International adviser on the death penalty, told Al Jazeera Executions in Iran dropped by 50 percent in 2018 following amendments to drug legisla-

I nt

tion that increased the minimum amounts of drugs for death penalty offences. The change meant executions were put on hold while cases were reviewed. Iraq, which executed at least 52 people, and Pakistan, which put more than 14 to death, also showed a downward trend. Meanwhile, Somalia almost halved its executions from 24 in 2017 to 13 last year. Amnesty’s report comes after London-based NGO Harm Reduction International (HRI) revealed a drop of 68 percent in executions worldwide for drug crimes from 288 to 91 in 2018.. Popoola said that “while the global figures of executions undoubtedly tell a positive story for 2018, there were also concerning developments which show that it’s not yet time to lift the pressure”. “The death penalty continued to be used in many cases against international law and standards in the absence of a fair trial and for non-lethal crimes such as drug-related offences,” he said.Amnesty found increases in executions in Japan, Singapore, South Sudan, Belarus and the United States. Methods of recorded executions included beheading in Saudi Arabia, electrocution in the US, and hanging, lethal injection and shooting in other countries. Source: aljazeera.com

EU and Britain agree to Brexit delay until Oct. 31 ‘Please do not waste this time,’ pleads EU President Donald Tusk The European Union and British Prime Minister Theresa May have agreed to delay Brexit once again — this time until the end of October. Leaders of the 27 remaining EU member states met for more than six hours before agreeing early Thursday morning to postpone Brexit until Oct. 31. May, who had sought a delay only until June 30, agreed to the later date. Please do not waste this time’ Speaking to reporters after the agreement was reached, EU President Donald Tusk said, “During this time, the course of action will be entirely in the U.K.’s hands. It can still ratify the withdrawal agreement, in which case the extension will be terminated. It can also reconsider the whole Brexit strategy … but not in the withdrawal agreement.” Tusk said the U.K. will also have the option to revoke Article 50 and cancel Brexit altogether. He added a plea to Britain at the end of his statement: “Please do not waste this time.” Save or shove EU leaders spent a long dinner meeting wrangling over whether to save Britain from a precipitous and potentially calamitous Brexit this Friday, or to give the departing nation a shove over the edge. May pleaded with them to delay Britain’s exit until June 30 so the U.K could sort out the mess that Brexit has become. Tusk earlier suggested an even longer delay of up to a year with conditions attached to ensure Britain does not stymie EU decisionmaking if it remains a member.

Some EU leaders were sympathetic, but French President Emmanuel Macron said it was he who ultimately blocked a long Brexit delay and convinced other European Union leaders to agree to a shorter one in order to preserve the functioning of the EU. “It’s true that the majority was more in favour of a very long extension. But it was not logical, in my view — and above all, it was neither good for us nor for the U.K.,” he said. May initially believed that a June 30 deadline would be enough time for Britain’s Parliament to ratify a Brexit deal and pass the legislation needed for a smooth Brexit. But British lawmakers have rejected her divorce deal three times, and attempts to forge a compromise with her political opponents have yet to bear fruit. She said in Brussels tonight that she would not pretend that the next few weeks would be easy. “The choices we now face are stark and the timetable is clear. So we must now press on at pace with our efforts to reach consensus on a deal that is in the national interest,” she said. Source: cbc.ca

Trump praises Sisi as critics reiterate concern for human rights

Trump embraces Sisi despite concerns among US politicians, rights groups about human rights abuses in Egypt. US President Donald Trump, welcomed Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to the White House on Tuesday, saying a lot of progress had been made with Egypt in terms of “terrorism”. Trump, with Sisi at his side, also told reporters that the two had important things to discuss military issues and trade. “I think he is doing a great job,” Trump said as he sat down for talks with Sisi in the White House. “We have never had a better relationship between Egypt and United States than we do right now.” The United States government and US politicians are particularly concerned about Egypt’s reported signing of a two-billiondollar deal with Russia to buy more than 20 Sukhoi SU-35 fighter jets as well as weapons for the aircraft. Trump warmly embraced Sisi despite concerns among US politicians and rights advocates over human rights violations. Rights groups accuse Egypt of instituting a widespread crackdown on dissent, including the torture of political prisoners - allegations the Egyptian government has denied. In a letter released on Monday, key senators told Secretary of State Mike Pompeo there was strong support for the security relationship with Egypt but urged him to convey their concerns about democratic governance, political freedom, economic reforms and fundamental human rights in the country. “A strong and sustainable US-Egypt strategic

partnership is vital for both countries but it requires Egypt to make a tangible effort to make those reforms,” said the letter, signed by the Republican chairman and the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee as well as 15 other senators. “Maduro is a tyrant, Kim Jong Un is a tyant. Sisi changed the constitution, locking up thousands of political opponents and dissidents to try to stay in power, holding journalists and others and he is not a tyrant?” Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy asked Secretary of State Pompeo at a Capitol Hill hearing on Tuesday. Pompeo responded by saying, “we have not been remotely bashful” about calling out Egypt’s leader for human rights violations. He added that he was “deeply appreciative” of the Egyptian government’s cooperation with the United States. Pompeo said he raised concerns about US citizens who have been detained in Egypt with Sisi in their meeting on Monday. “I met with him yesterday. We talked about these very things, asking him to do better,” Pompeo said. Source: aljazeera.com

Tuesday’s election results exposed two major threats to Israeli democracy. Israel’s 2019 election results are in, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is all but certain to stay in office for a record fifth term. The consequences of his victory for both Israelis and Palestinians could very well be catastrophic. The past several years of Netanyahu’s time in office have been characterized by drift in two illiberal, anti-democratic directions. The prime minister has tried to buy off the independent media, further marginalized Israel’s Arab minority, and gone after civil society groups critical of his policies. Some of this behavior was, according to Israel’s attorney general, actively criminal; Netanyahu is likely to be indicted in the coming months but is expected to try to pass a law shielding himself from prosecution while in office. In essence, this apparent victory could allow Netanyahu to continue his scorched-earth campaign to maintain power at all costs — up to and including doing serious harm to the foundations of Israeli democracy. It has also become obvious that he has no interest in a negotiated solution to the conflict with the Palestinians, and seems content to indefinitely occupy Palestinian land without concern for the harm the occupation does to the Palestinians. At the end of the 2019 campaign, Netanyahu vowed to take this further and begin annexing West Bank settlements — a move toward permanent occupation and, ultimately, apartheid. These two axes of authoritarianism — weakening Israel’s democratic institutions while perpetuating rule over the Palestinians without granting them political rights — are connected. The conflict with the Palestinians has destroyed Israel’s left and empowered a seemingly ever-more-radical right. In Netanyahu’s fifth term, this connection could become even more explicit: Experts on Israeli politics are concerned he might support a more concrete annexation plan as part of

a Faustian bargain for the extreme right’s support in his quest for immunity from prosecution. Israel has survived existential threats before, including two invasions that nearly wiped out the young Jewish state. Yet the threat to Israeli democracy today is not external, but rather of Israelis’ own making — a long-running illness that could soon turn acute. The threat to democracy If Netanyahu is still in office by the summer, which seems extremely likely, he will become the longest-serving prime minister in Israeli history — passing David Ben-Gurion, the first Israeli prime minister, who has often been referred to as Israel’s George Washington. But if Ben-Gurion is remembered as the midwife of Israeli democracy, Netanyahu could be remembered as its gravedigger. Under Netanyahu’s leadership, Israel passed a law declaring that “the right to exercise national self-determination in the State of Israel is unique to the Jewish people” — an exclusive vision of national identity that excludes Arabs and other non-Jewish minorities. It passed a law aimed at silencing NGOs that monitored the Israeli military’s human rights abuses in the Palestinian territories, and passed a law removing a significant check on the prime minister’s power to take the country to war. Perhaps the single most worrying example of authoritarian drift in Israel is Netanyahu’s efforts to suborn the media. Source: cbc.ca

FAITH Usamah ibn Zaid reported: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, I do not see you fasting any month as much as you fast during Sha’ban.” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “It is a month people neglect between the months of Rajab and Ramadan. It is a month in which the deeds are raised to the Lord of the worlds and I like for my deeds to be raised while I am fasting.”Source: Sunan al-Nasā’ī 2357

Peace and the Spread of Islam

O

by Dr Jaafar S Idris N HIS WAY back to Madinah after the conclusion of the peace agreement of Al-Ḥudaybiyah with the unbelievers of Quraysh, the Prophet(SAW) received revelation from Allah. It was Sûrat Al-Fathwhich begins with the words: We have granted you a clear victory. [Sûrat Al-Fath 48:1] “Was this a victory, O Messenger of Allah?” One man asked. The Prophet(SAW) answered: “Yes, by whom in whose hand is my soul, it is a victory.” Why did the man ask? What kind of victory was it? And what is the lesson for us in this kind of victory? The man—he was no less that “Umar ibn Al-Khattâb—asked because the terms of the agreement were apparently not in favor of the Muslims who had come to perform “Umrah, which was something of a right to all Arabs during the Jâhilîyah period. However, the Quraysh who were in a state of war with the Muslims saw in their performing the “Umrah a kind of victory for them, despite the Prophet’s repeated assurances that their intention was purely religious, and that they had no intention of fighting. Quraysh insisted however, that the Muslims could not perform the “Umrah that year but could come to do so next year on certain conditions. The Prophet agreed and signed with them an agreement for the cessation of hostilities for ten years. But the agreement, which in fact lasted for only two years, included the stipulation that: If any man from us came to you, you must return him even if he accepted your religion.

The Result of the Treaty?

Ibn Hajr says in his book FathAl-Bâri Allah called it a victory because of the great consequences that followed from it. He reports Al-Zuhri, the great scholar, as saying: “No victory is Islam was greater than AlHudaybiyah. It used to be only fighting when people (Meaning Muslims and non-

Muslims) met. But when there was a truce, when the war stopped, and when people felt safe, they began to meet and talk to each other and negotiate. As a result, no thinking person to whom Islam was presented in that time [of the truce] but accepted it. The number of people who embraced Islam in those two years was equal to, or greater, than the number of all who had been Muslims before.” Ibn Hishâm concurs, saying: “The evidence of this is that when the Prophet went to Hudayybiyah he was accompanied by one thousand and four hundred Muslims, but when after two years he marched to conquer Makkah there were ten thousands with him.” And Ibn Hajr further explains “Because of the peace, which prevailed among them, people mixed with each other without any reprehension. Muslims recited the Qur’an to the polytheists, and debated with them openly about Islam without any fear, while earlier they used to speak to them about this only secretly.” We learn from the comments of these three great scholars of people embracing Islam. We also conclude that the reason for that was the state of peace which replaced that of war and fighting.

The Great Lesson of Al-Hudaybiyyah

What lesson is there for us in all this? The main lesson, I think, is that if a state of peace with non-Muslims is found to be more conducive to the spread of Islam than that of war, then it should be, not only preferred, but actively sought and maintained. This should be so even if Muslims have the power and the means to fight and conquer the non-Muslims. Instead of fighting or antagonizing them they should invite them and argue with them in the best of manners. In doing so they would be emulating the Prophet (SAW) Look at the nice but firm words of the message, which he sent to the polytheists: We have not come to fight any one; we have come only to perform “Umrah. The Month of Sha’ban

S

ha’ban is the name of the (eighth) month, and it is so called because in this month the Arabs used to disperse (tasha’aba) in search of water, or it was said that they dispersed to carry out raids and forays. Or it was said that it is so called because it sha’aba (branches out or emerges) i.e., it appears between the months of Rajab and Ramadhan. The plural forms of the word Sha’ban are Sha’banat and Sha’abin. Fasting in Sha’ban ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: “The Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to fast until we thought he would never break his fast, and not fast until we thought he would never fast. I never saw the Messenger of Allah fasting for an entire month except in Ramadhan, and I never saw him fast more than he did in Sha’ban.” [Narrated by al-Bukhari, no. 1833; Muslim, no. 1956] According to a report narrated by Muslim (no. 1957), “He used to fast all of Ramadhan, he used to fast all but a little of Sha’ban.” A group of scholars, including Ibn alMubarak and others, thought that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not fast all of Sha’ban, but he fasted most of it. This is supported by

The status of these fasts is like that of asSunan ar-Rawatib which are done before and after fard (prayers) and which make up for any shortfall in the number of obligatory prayers. The same applies to fasts observed before and after Ramadhan. Just as as-Sunan ar-Rawatib are better than other kinds of voluntary prayers, so fasts observed (in the months) before and after Ramadhan are better than fasts at other times.” The phrase “Sha’ban is a month to which people do not pay attention, between Rajab and Ramadhan” indicates that because it comes between two important months, the Sacred Month of Rajab and the month of fasting, people are preoccupied with those two months and they do not pay attention to Sha’ban. Many people think that fasting in Rajab is better than fasting in Sha’ban, because Rajab is one of the Sacred Months, but this is not the case. Real estate experts blame government ‘There are consequences’ for lying to Canadians: Trudeau on Scheer lawsuit threat policies for dismal March home sales

OTTAWA – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is defending his decision to threaten Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer with a libel suit, saying that “there are consequences” for misleading Canadians, which he believes Scheer has done amid the SNC-Lavalin affair. “I think highlighting that there are consequences short-term and long-term when politicians choose to twist the truth and distort reality for Canadians, it’s not something we’re going to put up with,” Trudeau said on his way into a cabinet meeting Tuesday morning. The potential lawsuit came to light over the weekend when Scheer held a press conference in which he distributed copies of a letter from the prime minister’s lawyer. The letter to Scheer gave notice of a possible libel lawsuit over a statement the opposition leader issued on the day that Jody Wilson-Raybould’s supplementary statement and audio evidence related to the SNC-Lavalin scandal was released. In that statement Scheer called Wilson-Raybould’s submission “concrete evidence that proves Justin Trudeau led a campaign to po-

litically interfere in SNC-Lavalin’s criminal prosecution,” and the entire affair “corruption on top of corruption on top of corruption.” Scheer has said he stands by his comments and welcomes the opportunity for Trudeau to test the case in court, where he’d have to testify under oath about the scandal, something the Conservatives have been calling for. Trudeau said in French that if Scheer withdraws the statement, he’ll find that satisfactory and would not pursue the lawsuit further. “I think it’s important that all politicians be straight with Canadians in how they characterize their own actions and their own beliefs. I think we’re going to have an election in the coming months, you can’t be inventing things, you can’t be lying to Canadians,” Trudeau said. The potential court case dominated question period on Monday. Government House Leader Bardish Chagger fielded the questions in the prime minister’s absence. Trudeau attended question period today and this potential lawsuit once again was the dominating topic of questions he faced. Source: ctvnews.ca

The owner of a popular bed-and-breakfast on the border is facing allegations that he’s been helping funnel illegal immigrants from the U.S. into Canada. Robert Boule is the longtime owner of the Smuggler’s Inn, located on Canada View Drive in Blaine, Wash. According to the indictment, Boule attempted to “organize, induce, aid or abet” seven people across the border. He’s been charged with 21 counts under the Immigration Act, none of which have been proven in court. The charges allege Boule helped people attempt to cross into Surrey, B.C. on dates ranging from May 2018 to March 2019, “despite knowing that, or being reckless as to whether, their coming into Canada is or would be in contravention of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.” It not clear whether any of the seven individuals, who are named in the indictment, actually crossed the border. Other charges allege Boule breached a court order that he is not to assist any person in the U.S. with attempting to enter Canada illegally. CTV News Vancouver visited the inn in

Blaine on Tuesday and knocked at the front door. A worker answered, but said he hadn’t seen Boule since he was scheduled to make a trip to Canada last week. A close friend, also described as the property’s caretaker, told CTV she was aware of the charges, did not know if Boule had a lawyer, and had no comment. Mike Lucas, who has lived down the street from the Smuggler’s Inn for over a decade, described Boule as a “good neighbour” who tells great stories. Lucas was surprised to hear about the charges. “Nice fellow. Congenial… Comes down here quite often. Pulls his truck in the driveway and we sit and talk about business in Blaine,” Mike Lucas said.“I’m surprised when you say 21 counts. That’s a lot of counts.” Lucas said it’s not unusual for people to cross the border illegally by cutting through the inn’s property, or his backyard, and it typically happens at least every other day. It’s not clear where Boule was arrested, but U.S. Customs and Border Patrol didn’t appear to be involved. RCMP deferred to the Canada Border Services Agency which said it wouldn’t be able to respond by deadline. The Smuggler’s Inn is as well-known for its name as for its location – right on the border between Blaine and Surrey, -- under the watchful eye of border patrol cameras. Boule has been interviewed by CTV several times in the past, and he’s shared stories of witnessing drug runners and weapons smugglers in his yard. He also said he’s woken up to find his guests missing in the morning. Up until now, he had not faced any charges or accusations of wrongdoing. Court records show Boule is scheduled to appear for a bail hearing in Surrey on Wednesday. Source: ctvnews.ca.

VANCOUVER - Home sales in Metro Vancouver in March plunged to levels not seen in more than three decades and real-estate experts blame government policies, not a lack of demand, for the dismal showing. The Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver reports 1,727 homes changed hands, a 31.4 per cent tumble from sales recorded for the same month last year. March 2019 sales were up just over 16 per cent when compared with February, but the real estate board says they were more than 46 per cent below the 10-year average for the month and the lowest total since 1986. A news release from board president Ashley Smith calls the trend largely policy induced. She says governments at all levels have imposed new taxes and borrowing requirements on the housing market for three years. The board says the result is that housing sales are no longer aligned with the growing economy and low unemployment rates across Greater Vancouver and most of British Columbia.“What policy-makers are failing to recognize is that demand-side measures don’t eliminate demand. They sideline potential home buyers in the short term,” Smith says in the release. She warns that shelter needs are always present and a mortgage stress test, speculation tax and other levies can’t relieve that pressure. “Using public policy to delay local demand in the housing market just feeds disruptive cycles that have been so well-documented in our region.” Just under 13,000 homes are currently listed for sale in Metro Vancouver, a roughly 52 per cent increase when compared with March 2018, and a 10 per cent jump in one month. Prices for homes of all types are falling. The

board reports the composite benchmark price for all residential properties in Metro Vancouver is currently just over $1 million, down 7.7 per cent over the year and a 0.5 per cent decrease since February. The benchmark price for a detached home shows the greatest year-over-year skid to $1.4 million, a decrease of 10.5 per cent since March 2018. Metro Vancouver condos had a benchmark price of just under $657,000 in March, a six per cent decrease in one year. Condos also recorded the sharpest sales chill, with a 35.3 per cent year-to-year drop. Townhouse sales were off 27 per cent from March 2018, while the benchmark price was down six per cent over the same period to $783,600. For all property types, real estate board data shows the sales-to-active listings ratio for March was 13.5 per cent. Analysts say downward pressure on home prices occurs when the ratio dips below 12 per cent for several months, while home prices often experience upward pressure when it surpasses 20 per cent over the same time frame. he Vancouver Canucks ended up with the 10th pick overall in the NHL Draft Lottery on Tuesday. In a message posted on Twitter, the team that finished the season in 23rd place overall, sarcastically posted, “Thanks Hockey Gods.” The organization has never had the number one pick in its franchise history. In the end, the New Jersey Devils got the top pick Canucks fans hoped for, moving up two spots while Vancouver moved down one. The New York Rangers will pick second, followed by the Chicago Blackhawks with the biggest gain, moving from 12th position to third. The Colorado Avalanche had the best odds of landing the first pick (18.5 per cent, after acquiring its selection from the Ottawa Sentators in 2017) but ended up drawing fourth.

The 15 teams that didn’t qualify for the playoffs this year, or acquired first-round picks from other non-playoff teams, participated in the lottery. Of the Canadian teams in the lottery, Edmonton fared best. The Oilers drew the eighth pick in the June 21-22 draft held at Vancouver’s Rogers Arena. The Habs in Montreal will pick 15th. The first overall pick will likely be forward Jack Hughes, younger brother of Canucks’ rookie Quinn Hughes. The elder Hughes made his NHL debut less than two weeks ago, earning a highlightreel-worthy assist in a 3-2 shootout victory over the L.A. Kings. The 19-year-old was picked seventh in the 2018 draft, and signed a three-year entry-level deal with the Canucks In March. Source: ctvnews.ca

US bars entry to 16 Saudis over Khashoggi murder

Those barred include former close adviser to MBS and alleged leader of the 15-man squad that carried out the killing. The US State Department has barred entry to 16 Saudi nationals over what it described as their role in the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The announcement on Monday by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo comes as the Trump administration faces pressure from Congress over its response to the killing in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last October, which sparked unprecedented international scrutiny of the kingdom’s human rights record. The section under which the individuals have been designated “provides that, in

cases where the Secretary of State has credible information that officials of foreign governments have been involved in significant corruption or gross violations of human rights, those individuals and their immediate family members are ineligible for entry into the United States”. The State Department previously revoked visas of nearly two dozen Saudi officials and froze the assets of 17 others. A critic of the Saudi regime, Khashoggi was killed and dismembered October 2 in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul by a team of 15 agents sent from Riyadh. His body has never been recovered. Those barred included Saud al-Qahtani, a

former close adviser to the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (also known as MBS), and Maher Mutreb, the alleged leader of the 15-man “execution squad”.After having repeatedly denied murdering Khashoggi, Saudi Arabia said the operation was carried out by agents who were out of control. A trial of 11 suspects opened earlier this year in Saudi Arabia. But much of the case remains shrouded, beginning with MBS’ role. The US Senate, after a closed-door briefing by the CIA, adopted a resolution in December naming the crown prince as “responsible” for the murder. President Donald Trump has refused to

pacities and not as state representatives. Ambassador Khalilzad “discussed with (Afghan) President Ashraf Ghani and others how to ensure the intra-Afghan dialogue in Doha next week, in which representatives of the Afghan government and wide society will participate, can best advance our shared goal of accelerating a settlement process,” said a statement issued by his office on Sunday evening. In a separate statement to various media outlets, the Taliban also said that the next US-Taliban meeting would be held in Doha in mid-April “within the framework” of previous peace talks. The United States and Taliban have already held six rounds of peace talks in Doha, Qatar. Militant group confirms change in its stance The Taliban insisted that the participants would only be sharing their own “views and policies” with others in the meeting. “If government- affiliated members do participate,

they will be doing so in their own capacities and not as state representatives,” the statement added. The statement also claimed that some Afghan officials had participated in previous meetings as well, but not as representatives of the Kabul government. The statement marks the first acknowledgement from the militant group of its willingness to include the Afghan government in the peace talks and comes on the day a suicide-bomber attacked a US base near Bagram. zad, who Meanwhile, Ambassador Khalil leads the US team in these talks, completed his 15-day visit to the region on Monday “following productive talks with President Ghani on accelerating a settlement process, reducing violence across Afghanistan, and supporting Afghan security forces if violence continues,” his office said.

Tehran took retaliatory action by naming the US Central Command (CENTCOM) as a “terrorist organisation” and the US government as a “state sponsor of terrorism”. Record-breaking demand a market vote of confidence for oil giant but some investors are worried about gov’t influence. Orders for Saudi Aramco’s debut international bond topped $100bn on Tuesday, a record-breaking vote of market confidence for the oil giant which has faced investor concerns about government influence over the company. State-owned Aramco is expected to raise more than $10bn from the deal, which will be priced later on Tuesday and is seen as a gauge of potential investor interest in the Saudi company’s eventual initial

public offering (IPO). Before the six-part bond deal was marketed on Monday, Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih said initial indications of interest for the paper were over $30bn. The demand appeared to be the largest ever for emerging markets bonds, fund managers said, surpassing order book value of more than $52bn for Qatar’s $12bn deal last year, $67bn for Saudi Arabia’s inaugural issue in 2016 and $69bn orders for Argentina’s $16.5bn trade that year. “Purely on figures, it is a fantastic credit,” said

reporters in Ankara that the party would push for a rerun: “We will take the path of extraordinary appeal...We will say that we want the election in Istanbul to be repeated.” Officials at the Supreme Electoral Council, known by its Turkish initials YSK, will decide whether the ruling party has a case. Yavuz on Twitter denied local media reports that the AKP had already filed a demand for the re-run as “untrue”, saying the party was considering the extraordinary appeal in the days ahead. The AKP won most votes nationwide in the March 31 vote, but voters appeared to punish the ruling party in the two mayor cities partly because of an economic slowdown that followed Turkey’s currency

crisis last year. Both opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) candidate Ekrem Imamoglu and the AKP’s Binali Yildirim claimed victory soon after preliminary tallies showed them in a dead heat.Election officials later said Imamoglu was ahead but the gap has narrowed to around 15,000 votes after recounting of void ballots this week. Both won around four million votes in the election for Istanbul, the country’s biggest city and economic hub. Imamoglu, a little-known mayor of one of Istanbul’s districts who ran a low-key campaign, has already declared himself Istanbul mayor. WASHINGTON: US special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad has announced a major breakthrough in efforts for ending war in Afghanistan, saying that representatives of the Afghan government will participate in the Doha talks next week. Erdogan’s party to seek rerun of Istanbul election Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s AKP party on Tuesday said it will seek a rerun of Istanbul’s disputed mayoral election after the ruling party lost and authorities rejected its demand for a full recount. The Justice and Development Party (AKP) appealed citing irregularities after its Istanbul candidate was narrowly defeated last week in what would be a major setback after a decade and a half in power. Erdogan’s party also lost the capital Ankara. The Turkish leader on Monday had questioned the Istanbul election results and hinted at a rerun because he said the vote was marred by ballot box theft. Trudeau’s woes show B.C. becoming rising federal political power

By Melanie GreenStar Vancouver

VANCOUVER—Any political party dreaming of forming the federal government in 2019 is going to need a solid understanding of B.C. and what matters to its residents, experts say. That’s most apparent in 2015 federal election results where 70 ridings were won with just five per cent margins or less and nine of those ridings were in B.C. While Quebec and Ontario have long-been considered the central battlegrounds which ultimately decide the federal election, if a race is expected to be close — and a party’s priority is not in growing a majority and perhaps creating a minority government — then nine ridings within five points becomes critical. That’s according author and political scientist, David Moscrop, who was referencing numbers in The Hill Times article on Sunday. “If you get a competitive province

with a significant number of seats, then all of a sudden, that province becomes a battleground,” Moscrop said in an interview. “It looks like it goes Ontario, Quebec, B.C. as the one-two-three for swing seats.” At a time when wooing British Columbia is essential to the Liberal party’s chances in the fall election, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s party is tanking. The Conservatives are ahead in the polls for every province in the country, with the exception of Quebec. The federal focus on B.C. has grown over the last decade: Moscrop pointed to issues in the national spotlight such as the carbon tax, fentanyl trafficking, China relations, real estate, and trade while explicitly noting the province is routinely a national economic leader. Of the 70 ridings that were won by a margin of five per cent or less, 28 were in Ontario, 22 in Quebec, nine in B.C., four in Alberta, three in Manitoba, two in Saskatchewan and one each in Newfoundland and Labrador and New Brunswick, according to The Hill Times. The current Liberal majority is “comfortable” but not “massive,” Moscrop said, and that’s why those nine B.C. seats are going to be crucial, espe-

cially come October. The Liberals could theoretically steal seats from the NDP — who took 16 ridings with margins of five per cent or fewer as compared to the Liberals 34 and Conservatives 15 — or even the Conservatives. In the meantime, the party is lagging behind in Atlantic Canada, where they swept in 2015, and Moscrop noted poll numbers are dropping in Quebec as well. “(If) the Liberals can bolster Quebec or Atlantic Canada, gain a bit in B.C. while the Conservatives gain in Ontario, then all of a sudden B.C. becomes the king maker,” Moscrop said. “As we watch the polls roll in across the country, you could imagine an election night in which it comes down to B.C.” But, he added, the Liberals have not done well on the West coast historically. More importantly, the current narrative around resource politics has become so poisoned and toxic that it’s battered the party’s chances in the province. Moscrop said the question is about whether the Liberals will be able to create a majority government or squeak by with a minority. The latter wouldn’t be unprecedented: Several ruling majority governments became minorities four years later. Martyn Brown is a former B.C. Liberal — a provincial party that has no

ties to the federal one and is often aligned with small “c” conservative values — and was chief of staff for the province’s premier during the 2000s. According to him, the power base has been shifting from central to Western Canada over the last decade. Brown expects that to continue as the province continues to grow. He pointed to marked population growth, economic diversification, resource policies, and global name recognition that is attracting immigration which he argued makes the province “very competitive” with metro areas of Toronto. He predicted that within a decade B.C. will be an even greater force with more seats in the House of Commons and more clout in government than the province has had before. And while the region should be fertile ground to gain support, Brown said it likely won’t be productive for the Liberals. He’s publicly called for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to step down and argued that the party’s greatest challenge is authenticity. “It’s a problem of authenticity on reconciliation, on climate action, on clean energy, and on housing,” he said. “Trudeau’s exposed himself as a pretty face with a great family name but someone who doesn’t have the policy prescriptions to the opportunities and challenges.”

Ottawa, ON - Today, the Honourable Andrew Scheer, the Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and the Leader of the Official Opposition, said he would welcome court proceedings on the SNC-Lavalin corruption scandal after receiving a lawsuit threat from Justin Trudeau.Mr. Scheer received a letter from Justin Trudeau’s lawyer on March 31 threatening a lawsuit over Mr. Scheer’s criticisms of Trudeau’s conduct in the SNCLavalin corruption scandal. Mr. Scheer released that letter today and also released a letter his lawyer sent today

in response, dismissing Trudeau’s claims and urging him to proceed with the lawsuit so Canadians get finally get the answers they deserve on the SNC-Lavalin corruption scandal.“If Mr. Trudeau believes he has a case against me, I urge him to follow through on his threat immediately. Canadians want this scandal to be investigated in a legal setting where Liberals do not control the proceedings,” Scheer said. “I welcome the opportunity to examine Mr. Trudeau in pre-trial discovery at the earliest possible date and I look forward to Mr.

Trudeau presenting his evidence to Canadians under oath in open court.” Scheer also called the lawsuit threat an intimidation tactic intended to scare Conservatives away from pressing for answers on the scandal. “This is what Justin Trudeau does when you stand up to him. He threatens you. He did it to Jody Wilson-Raybould and now he’s doing it to us,” Scheer said. “Like her, we will not back down. We will continue to do our jobs, hold him to account, and get to the bottom of this.”

Statement From Michelle Rempel On Liberal Immigration Sponsorship Policy Gap

OTTAWA, ON - The Hon. Michelle Rempel, Shadow Minister for Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, issued the following statement regarding a government decision that is keeping vulnerable women who have sponsored their partners in situations of abuse: “This Liberal government removed the conditional permanent residence requirement for sponsored spouses, a significant policy change that does not allow for a sponsor to end the three-year undertaking

period. This means that the sponsor is held responsible for the expenses of their sponsored spouse for the entire waiting period, even if they have since been subjected to domestic abuse.“I have been contacted by a woman who is in an abusive situation and despite filing for divorce and pressing assault charges against her husband, she cannot end the sponsorship agreement that she signed to bring him to Canada. The Liberal government has enacted a policy that is having adverse consequences on vulner-

able women. “Despite seeking additional information on this disturbing situation, the Department of Immigration has refused to commit to fixing this issue. It is absolutely unconscionable that this government claims to be a feminist government and yet they allow this injustice to continue under their watch. I will continue to hold the Trudeau government to account and demand that they fix this policy gap which puts vulnerable women at risk.”

Refugee advocates ‘shocked and dismayed’ over asylum changes in budget bill

Lawyers and advocates who work directly with refugees say they are dismayed by proposed changes to asylum laws included in the Liberals’ new budget bill, calling them a devastating attack on refugee rights in Canada. The Trudeau government is proposing to prevent asylum seekers from making refugee claims in Canada if they have made similar claims in certain other countries, including the United States. Border Security Minister Bill Blair said the measure aims to prevent “asylum-shopping.”

“I can tell you we’ve been working very hard over the past several months to significantly reduce the number of people who are crossing our borders irregularly,” Blair told reporters Tuesday. “There’s a right way to come to the country to seek asylum and/or to seek to immigrate to this country, and we’re trying to encourage people to use the appropriate channels and to disincentivize people from doing it improperly.” The proposed changes blindsided refugee advocates and lawyers, who say they would strip human-rights protections from vulner-

able refugee claimants. “In terms of the effect on refugees, the effect is really immeasurable, because we’re now giving refugee claimants a degraded process to go through,” said Maureen Silcoff, the chair of the Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers’ litigation committee.

The new provision in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act — which was tucked into the 392-page omnibus budget bill tabled Monday evening — introduces a new ground of ineligibility for refugee protection. Source: cbc.ca

Eating Fiber can delay brain aging

By Ana Sandoiu Fiber is a key element of a healthful diet. New research breaks down the mechanism by which it can delay age-related brain inflammation. food rich in fiber. Fiber can be found in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, pulses, and whole-grain foods. If all the studies that urge people to consume a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains for a healthy life haven’t convinced you yet to add more broccoli to your plate, perhaps this latest research will. Eating fiber-rich foods — such as broccoli, nuts, oats, beans, and wholegrain bread — might help delay brain aging by triggering the production of a short-chain fatty acid that has anti-inflammatory properties. This the main takeaway of a new study that was recently published in the journal Frontiers in Immunology.Rodney Johnson, a professor and the head of the Department of Animal Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is the corresponding author of the study, and Stephanie M. Matt is the first author of the paper. How fiber lowers inflammation As Matt and colleagues explain in their study paper, microglia — a major type of immune

cell in the brain — tend to become hyperactive and chronically inflamed with age. This inflammation of the microglia is one of the main causes of memory and cognitive decline in old age. Previous research has shown that a drug form of butyrate, which is a short-chain fatty acid that is produced in the colon when bacteria ferment fiber in the gut, can improve memory and reduce inflammation in mice. A bone-produced hormone is found to reverse the signs of brain aging in mice. However, the precise mechanisms behind this weren’t entirely understood. Also, previous research had not shown whether simply increasing the dietary content of fiber would achieve the same results as the drug. So, Matt and colleagues fed young and aging mice diets high and low in fiber. Then, the scientists measured the mice’s blood levels of butyrate and their levels of pro-inflammatory substances in their intestines. Prof. Johnson sums up these findings, saying, “The high-fiber diet elevated butyrate and other [short-chain fatty acids] in the blood both for young and old mice.” “But,” he goes on, “only the old mice showed intestinal inflammation on the low-fiber diet [...] It’s in-

teresting that young adults didn’t have that inflammatory response on the same diet. It clearly highlights the vulnerability of being old.”Also, consuming a high-fiber diet reduced the intestinal inflammation in aging mice so much that it was indistinguishable from that of young mice. “Dietary fiber can really manipulate the inflammatory environment in the gut,” says Prof. Johnson. What about the brain, however? Why fiber is good for your brain A genetic analysis of inflammatory markers conducted by the scientists found that a high-fiber diet reduced inflammation in the brain’s microglia. The researchers suspect that this was achieved by diminishing the production of a pro-inflammatory chemical known as interleukin-1β, which some studies have linked with Alzheimer’s. Study coauthor Jeff Woods, a professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Community Health at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign, comments on the findings.”We know that diet has a major influence on the composition and function of microbes in the

gut and that diets high in fiber benefit good microbes,” he points out, “while diets high in fat and protein can have a negative influence on microbial composition and function.”Altering gut microbes, explains Prof. Woods, “is one way in which [diet] affects disease.”Prof. Johnson explains that the findings are relevant to humans, saying, “People are not likely to consume sodium butyrate directly, due to its noxious odor,” he says, but, “A practical way to get elevated butyrate is to consume a diet high in soluble fiber.” “What you eat matters. We know that older adults consume 40 percent less dietary fiber than is recommended. Not getting enough fiber could have negative consequences for things you don’t even think about, such as connections to brain health and inflammation in general.” Source:https://www.medicalnewstoday.com

HISTORY

Egypt: 100 days of personal reporting

Dr. Mohamed Elmasry Of all my annual visits to Egypt, the country of my birth, this latest one has been the longest - more than

100 days. I filled that time with many memorable experiences, such as visiting family and friends and discussing research projects with some of my former University of Waterloo PhD students, who are now engineering professors at Egypt’s best universities. I am also a keen student of Egyptian history, culture, music and literature. I attended several events and brought home a large stack of books in both Arabic and English. But I found time as well to learn first-hand how the country is doing, how it is facing myriad internal and external challenges. During this visit I became much better informed and inspired by the success of its efforts. For example, I visited four ambitious megaprojects and was impressed at how much had been accomplished in such a short time. My first such visit was to the NAC, Egypt’s New Administrative Capital, about 100 km northeast of the vast metropolis of Cairo. Although still a work-in-progress, I visited two buildings nearing completion. One will be the largest Coptic Christian Church in the world, and not too far from it will be the second-largest mosque in the world; only the grand mosques of Mecca and Madina are larger. The entire NAC site is an architectural and urban planning marvel, designed by Egyptians, built by Egyptians, for Egyptians. Unlike the enormous chaotic sprawl of Cairo, this new capital boasts state-of-the-art security, infrastructure and transportation. I was accompanied on my tour by a young manager from the Arab Contractors Company, one of several firms working on the NAC. He was rightly proud of having a role in his country’s bold new venture.

On our way from my downtown hotel to the NAC site we took a brand new toll road. At the booth he asked that the fee be waived, since his company had built the road. But the attendant replied that Egypt’s President El Sisi visited the week before and insisted on paying his own toll, like anyone else. It was true. The NAC will be the new home for more than three dozen embassies and key government departments. Near the core there will be luxury accommodation for embassy staff, as well as subsided housing for workers and many others. Only a few years out from the first shovel in the ground, this project employs thousands of workers around the clock, seven days a week. When completed, Egypt’s NAC will be the largest purposebuilt city in Africa and the Middle East. The second mega-project I saw was a new resort called Algalala on the road to Suez, about an hour’s drive out from Cairo. It’s Egypt’s first mountain-top resort, overlooking the Red Sea from a height of some 700 metres – the view is breathtaking. The road from Cairo to Algalala, another new project, is first class by any standards, a super-highway with six lanes in each direction, plus separate bike lanes. There are service stations every 50 kms and emergency road service is available 24/7. In addition to hotels and year-round apartments, Algalala’s infrastructure also includes a new university. The third major project I visited was one of the six tunnels planned to run under the new and old Suez Canal, a time- and energy-saving link to connect Sinai with the Nile Valley. The fourth project was the world’s largest solar energy generating station, located near Aswan in Upper Egypt. These four projects tell a remarkable success story of how Egypt is determinedly fighting the evil of terrorism, while simultaneously ensuring a sustainable and prosperous new future for its people. “You’d have to be blind not to see what El Sisi has achieved in the five years since he took office,” commented one of my taxi

drivers. “We don’t care what anyone says . . . we will change the constitution to keep him for another term.” Aside from members of the disgraced Muslim Brotherhood and other extremists, the vast majority of Egyptians agree with him, and that includes a growing number who didn’t support El Sisi in 2013, when he rode the wave of a popular uprising to topple the MB from power. Now they realize that this event saved Egypt from certain civil war; and five years later, the country is not just surviving, but thriving under his leadership. El Sisi is a high-achiever in other fields as well. Thanks to his initiatives, Egypt has become a vibrant catalyst for African-ArabEuropean cooperation. The beautiful Red Sea resort of Sharm El Sheikh recently hosted a major summit of European and Arab countries with more than 50 presidents, kings and prime ministers attending. At a press conference following that summit, a German journalist challenged El Sisi that Egypt was inhumane for sentencing nine convicted terrorists to death. The President politely but firmly responded; “Please don’t lecture us on how to be more humane; we don’t lecture you. We respect our differences and so should you. We’ve never asked [the European Union] to consider bringing the death penalty back.” This year, Egypt is leading African nations to work together economically and culturally to develop areas such as agriculture, education, health and sports. As a result, tourism within Africa is also on the increase, thanks in large part to Egypt’s support of international events such as this summer’s African Cup soccer tournament. The historic city of Aswan in Upper Egypt was the site for an African- Arab Youth Conference, where President El Sisi addressed delegates with this challenge: “We are all Africans. We must stop the [divisive thinking] that there are two Africas – the Arab North and the Black South.” He is absolutely right.

By the numbers, Egypt is now doing well in many key areas of production, infrastructure, economy and social programs, thanks to the President and his government team of ministers, some of whom I know personally. The country now exceeds its domestic needs in both electricity and gas, with more petroleum discoveries being on land and under the Red and Mediterranean seas. Besides the much-headlined NAC, Egypt is building no fewer than 13 new cities. Inflation, unemployment, and the value of the American dollar are all decreasing, with a resulting increase in the country’s economic prospects. Terrorist campaigns by the Muslim Brotherhood have been exposed, firmly dealt with, and pre-emptive strikes by government security forces have greatly reduced their frequency and loss of life. External MB support from Qatar, Turkey, and Hamas has also been minimized, all of which bodes well for the continued restoration of Egypt’s vital tourism industry. In 2018 tourism revenue topped 11 billion dollars. My main complaint during this long and busy visit was Cairo’s heavy rush-hour traffic. With the massive ongoing construction of underground lines, I hope the gridlock will have lessened next time I visit. I know for sure that the transformation will continue and that many new wonders for the eye, mind and heart will be waiting when I return. Take care, Egypt – I love you. Source:hecanadiancharger.com

Canada celebrates 40 years of the refugee sponsorship program

More than 327,000 refugees have found safe haven in Canada

April 9, 2019 – Ottawa, ON – As Canada’s Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program marks 40 years, Canadians are being celebrated for their immense contributions and dedication to provide a safe haven for vulnerable refugees around the world.

Dr. Asim Qidwai, Founder & C.E.O of Afzaal Memorial Thalassemia Foundation

Canada has also become a model for other countries across the globe. The success of the program is a direct result of the extraordinary partnerships and cooperation among Canadian organizations, businesses, governments, communities and individuals. Private sponsors have welcomed more than 327,000 refugees since the start of the program in the late 1970s and it is one of the oldest and best known resettlement programs in the world. Up until 2016, Canada was the only country in the entire world with such a program. Through the Global Refugee Sponsorship Initiative, sponsorship programs have grown significantly with Argentina, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Spain and Germany now developing or operating new community sponsorship programs for refugees. Dr. Asim Qidwai, Founder & C.E.O of Afzaal Memorial Thalassemia Foundation (AMTF) called on the High Commissioner of Pakistan, Raza Bashir Tarar and briefed him on the work of the Foundation in the field of health care related to children from blood disorder. The High Commissioner appreciated the plan of the Foundation for conducting awareness sessions with the Pakistani community living abroad. He agreed with the vision of the founda-

Quote “Thank you to all Canadians for opening both their hearts and homes to welcome more than 327,000 refugees over the last four decades from coast to coast to coast. We can all take pride in the example Canadians set for the world. It is truly emblematic of the character of Canadians and the fabric of our great country”. – The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Quick facts: •The Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program officially began in 1978 and marked the first time Canadians were able to get involved in the resettlement of vulnerable refugees. •Between 1979 and 1980, more than 60,000

people found refuge in Canada after the Vietnam War. Of those, over half were supported by private sponsorship groups. •Since 1980, more than 160 communities have welcomed privately sponsored refugees from more than 175 countries. •Since 2015, more than half of the 62,000 Syrian refugees who have been resettled to Canada were privately sponsored. •Launched in 2016, the Global Refugee Sponsorship Initiative - a partnership between Canada, the United Nations Refugee Agency, the Open Society Foundations, the Giustra Foundation and the University of Ottawa - aims to increase global refugee resettlement spaces, strengthen host communities, and improve the narrative about refugees by engaging governments and private citizens in refugee sponsorship.

tion to deliver the utmost level of passionate care to the patients of thalassemia. The High Commissioner urged the founder for developing synergy among the institutes working in Pakistan on the childhood blood diseases. Dr. Asim Qidwai also informed the High Commissioner for his drive to include thalassemia awareness and prevention in the curriculum of high schools and colleges of Pakistan.

IMF Talks

FINANCE Minister Asad Umar is off to Washington, D.C. to finalise an IMF programme, and he has promised that by the end of the month, Pakistan will once again be in a Fund programme. It is a bit odd to view this as a not unwelcome development, since, regrettably, decades of mismanagement of the economy has brought us to a point where entering into an IMF programme is considered grounds for relief and some sort of saving grace for economic management in the country. However, decades of experience with the

IMF have also taught us that these programmes are rarely ever easy and almost always exact a steep political price from the government of the day. There have been some rare exceptions — at a time when Pakistan has had closer ties with the US, for instance, in the early 1980s or the mid-2000s, and when it could count on pressure being exerted on the Fund via the White House. That option is hardly available at the moment. Standing on the cusp of an IMF programme is not the right time for the ruling party to display a thin skin towards its critics, especially on economic matters. Economic pain is always difficult to bear, and even harder to spin away or distract people from; and it almost always draws the most bitter opposition and tough questioning from the party’s own support base. The moment before his departure for the spring meetings of the IMF and World Bank

was a bad time for Mr Asad to lash out against his critics. In fact, it would have been a good opportunity to project confidence and signal a firm hand on the tiller, while giving a clear picture of the path on which the economy is about to embark. We will know more about how long, and how intense, the economic pain is going to be once the data projecting the growth rate is made public. At the moment, the World Bank has slashed its growth forecast to 3.4pc, below what the State Bank had said a few months ago, ie 3.5pc. Next year’s projections show the slowdown intensifying further. What is also troubling is the total absence of a viable tax-broadening vision, something that governments usually announce in their first year in power. With a slowing economy will come diminished revenues, and without a base-broad-

ening initiative in place, the burden of narrowing the fiscal deficit will naturally fall upon those who are already in the tax net. The finance minister must ensure that the economy does not become part of a vicious circle where revenue measures serve as a brake on the economy, and the slowing economy necessitates further taxes. The road ahead is an uphill one. The finance minister should prove that he can soothe the rising levels of anxiety in the country. Source: dawn.com

Without reforms, Pakistan’s growth rate to remain at 2.5pc till 2024: IMF

ISLAMABAD: As Finance Minister Asad Umar leads a delegation to Washington to finalise a three-year bailout programme, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Tuesday forecast Pakistan’s growth to fall to 2.9 per cent and 2.8pc during the current and next fis-

cal year unless its programme was accepted. The delegation led by finance minister including State Bank of Pakistan Governor Tariq Bajwa, Finance Secretary Younas Dagha, Economic Affairs Division Secretary Noor Ahmed and senior officials from these institu-

tions would attend the spring meetings (April 9 – 14) of the IMF and the World Bank and finalise a bailout package to stabilise macroeconomic fundamentals on the sidelines. Before leaving for Washington, the minister had said the proposed IMF programme would

be finalised on the sidelines of the spring meetings which will be followed by a fund staff mission’s visit to Islamabad in the third week of the current month to formally sign the agreement. Source: dawn.com

“Timing Your Role”!

By: Asma Shmas et me share a very good story with you... There was one very famous artist, he was successful and unaffected by success or failure. Somebody asked him, “What do you learn from your dramas?” He said, “I have learned that one has to do full justice to one’s role. Once your role is over leave the stage and when you are doing other roles, put your full capability in that role.”. Thats the whole problem. We do not get the jist of our role, we do not leave few things. We do not change with times. The food we eat has to be digested and thrown out in 24 hours, otherwise we may fall ill and the air we breathe in also has to be exhaled out. Negative Emotions When healthy things also has to be thrown out what about negative emotions? For example, hatred, anger, jealousy, ego, insecurity, revenge, etc. We hold those emotions for days and months and years. We nourish them and we get used to them, and instead of throwing them out, we prioritize them and relish in self-pity. We get used to living with all insecurities. The funny thing is we sometimes know about it, are aware of it and sometimes are not. We even know how to get help but we choose not to. What happens if we do not throw these negative emotions out? Yes, we need to keep check on them, they can turn our good qualities into bad, affect our sense of right and wrong, good can turn evil too. Then ultimately it can prop up in psycho-somatic diseases. Scary, huh?! What To Do We have to take steps such as prayers, meditation, an attitude of positivity and constantly practising to keep negative thoughts out the door and work hard on oneself. It’s not that people behave like a crazy person are suffering from these emotions. Even

the most educated, successful, beautiful, smart, attractive, average, anybody around us can be victims of negative emotions. We, ourselves, may be falling prety into negativity. Everywhere The mother who is so eager to see her son get married, happy, feels insecure when she sees him giving priority to his wife, co-worker who gets a friend in the same job as them, feels jealous when the friend gets promotion. There are many more such examples. Everybody is special God has given everyone something and everyone is unique. Everybody has their place in the universe. A moon cannot cry that why do I not shine like the sun or vice versa. Respect your own self We have to respect our own self as a human being, we should not let others decide our selfworth. If I am a nurse or a cleaner or mechanic. It does not mean I am less than any doctor or CEO or any successful person in any industry. As long as one does his or her duty, does justice to his or her role in professional and personal and social life, thats okay. In fact, that’s the way it makes life satisfactory. Money and other things are the means or tools to help achieve peace and harmony. These things are not our goals, but means to achieve our goals. This way when we all are healthy and positive, society on the whole will be one happy society.

Loss & Grief!

By: Shabnam Khan -Family Counsellor 4 - D e p r e s -

rief is a somewhat complicated and misunderstood emotion. Yet, grief is something that, unfortunately, we must all experience at some time or other. We will all inevitably experience loss. Whether it is a loss through death, divorce or some other loss, the stages of grieving are somewhat the same. There are five stages of grief. If we get stuck in one stage or the other, the process of grieving is not complete, and cannot be complete. Thus there will be no healing. A person most likely goes through five stages to be well again, to heal. Not everyone goes through the stages at the same time. It is different for each person. You cannot force a person through the stages, they have to go at their own pace, and you may go one step forward then take two steps backward, but this is all part of the process, and individual to each person. The following five stages must be completed for healing to occur: 1-Denial-”this can’t be happening to me”, looking for the former spouse in familiar places, or if it is death, setting the table for the person or acting as if they are still in living there. No crying. Not accepting or even acknowledging the loss. 2-Anger-”why me?” feelings of wanting to fight back or get even with spouse of divorce, for death, anger at the deceased, blaming them for leaving. 3-Bargaining-bargaining often takes place before the loss. Attempting to make deals with the spouse who is leaving, or Info: Asma Shums <asmashums@gmail.com attempting to make deals with God to stop or change the loss. Begging, wishing and praying for them to come back.

sion-overwhelming feelings of hopelessness, frustration, bitterness, s e l f - p i t y, mourning loss of person as well as the hopes, dreams and plans for the future. Feeling lack of control, feeling numb. Perhaps feeling suicidal. 5-Acceptance-there is a difference between resignation and acceptance. You have to accept the loss, not just try to bear it quietly. Realization that it takes two to make or break a marriage. Realization that the person is gone (in death) that it is not their fault; they didn’t leave you on purpose. (even in cases of suicide, often the deceased person, was not in their right frame of mind) Finding the good that can come out of the pain of loss, finding comfort and healing. Our goals turn toward personal growth. Stay with fond memories of person. Get help. You will survive. You will heal, even if you cannot believe that now, just know that it is true. To feel pain after loss is normal. It proves that we are alive, human. But we can’t stop living. We have to become stronger, while not shutting off our feelings for the hope of one day being healed and finding love and/or happiness again. Helping others through something we have experienced is a wonderful way to facilitate our healing and bring good out of something tragic. info:shabnam@skcounselling.ca

Stress In Kids

By: Khadija Nadeem tress in kids is becoming more and more common as of 2019. Many studies have been released, for parents to use as guides, when they are helping their children cope with the mental state they’re going through. But if we educate children (if we educate you), they can understand their feelings and emotions quicker - feelings and emotions your parents might be oblivious to. Stress itself is something your body feels when you are uncomfortable or worried about something. You may feel angry, frustrated or afraid, which can give you headaches. Many things can cause youth to feel stressed such as homework, having too many extracurriculars, or something serious such as having a dysfunctional family. To identify stress is to stop it. The quicker you find it the less it can progress. There are different signs of stress in whether it be changes in eating and sleeping habits or new/recurring fears. Nevertheless, to help yourself cope with stress you can do many things. First you should manage your day so that you have time for play. The older

children get, the more they think they are “to cool for playing” but everyone needs time to calm down and relax. Make sleep a priority. Sleep isn’t overrated. It makes you feel rejuvenated and calm which is vital for a peaceful day. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. In today’s generations, perfectionists are common. Be sure you understand that mistakes are part of the process. If you see these signs in yourself or in anyone else, don’t be afraid to reach out for help. There are resources all around youfrom teachers to parents to older siblings. Remember, your closest friend could be going through this and you wouldn’t know. Keep a lookout for signs!

23rd Meraj-Un-Nabi Conference at Fiji Islamic Centre Surrey On March 30, International Muslim Academy of Canada (IMAC) organized an 23rd annual Miraj un Nabi Conference at Fiji Islamic Centre Surrey to remember the night of Miraj-un Nabi(saw). Mr. Asim Akhtar Khan of IMAC was the MC for this event. Program started with Tilawat-e-Quran-Pak recited by Hafiz Ahmed Raza followed by beautiful Hamad o Naat (saw) by Rayyan Ahmed, Saad Salis, Muzamil Ahmed and and Abdul Salis recited beautiful Naats. This time IMAC committee designated topics of ``Miraj`` in three categories for all speakers. MC requested guest first English speaker Qari Imarn Raza, topic given to Qari Imran was “What is Shab e Barat facts”? Qari sahib explained the incident of Miraj with Quran and Sunnah but besides that he also added ``Poetry`` topic in his address that Allah (swt) says in Quran Surah AshShu’ara -228 Except those [poets] who believe and do righteous deeds and remember Allah often and defend [the Muslims] after they were wronged. And those who have wronged are going to know to what [kind of] return they will be returned. Mr. Khan requested for the second topic of ``Isra`` to Pir Afzal Shah Naqashbandi from Bullay Shah Academy of Canada. Pir Afzal started with the Sura of Bini Israeli 17:1 Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid alAqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs.
