ANCOUVER -- Tens of thousands of B.C.’s frontline and essential workers were supposed to receive the AstraZeneca vaccine in an immunization campaign that would run alongside the current age-based program.Concerns around blood clots, prompted by rare incidents in other parts of the world, has changed that. Right now, AstraZeneca can only be administered to people between the ages of 55 and 65 at pharmacies. That has some infectious disease experts suggesting essential workers be given the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, even if that means diverting and delaying doses for those in the age-based program. “The most effective way to use those vaccines is to vaccinate those who are at high risk of infecting others, who are at high risk of being exposed,” said Caroline Colijn, an infectious disease modeller at Simon Fraser University. Canada faces ‘very serious third wave’ of pandemic: Trudeau

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s comments come as largest province sees rise in cases, hospitalisations as variants spread. anada is facing “a very serious third wave” of the COVID-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Tuesday, as the country’s most populous province is struggling to respond to rising infections and hospitalisations, and the rapid spread of coronavirus variants. During a news conference in Ottawa, Trudeau warned that hospitalisations are increasing, intensive care units are filling up, and coronavirus variants are spreading. “Even if the sun is shining and the weather is getting warmer, COVID-19 isn’t done with us yet.”Canada has reported at least one million cases of COVID-19 and more than 23,000 deaths since the start of the pandemic, according to a

Johns Hopkins University tally. A recent increase in cases and hospitalisations in several provinces – including the most populous, Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia on the west coast – has prompted calls for stricter public health measures to stem the spread of the virus. . BC health officials have reported cases involving the coronavirus variants first discovered in the UK, South Africa and Brazil. “We do know that a lot of that is the variant[s], and it does seem like it is a more transmissible strain and it also seems that people do get sicker with some of these variants,” Dr Gerald Da Roza, head of medicine at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, BC, told CBC News. “Some people say this is the busiest we’ve been in 15 years,” he said. The Quebec government announced on Tuesday evening that it was tightening restrictions in so-called red zones, including the province’s largest city, Montreal, amid the rise in infections. Opposition offered unlimited time HRCP ‘appalled’ by PM Imran’s remarks linking infor debate in NA cidence of rape to obscenity, demands apology

‘partial speaker’ Earlier, talking to Mr Chaudhry, the speaker said the consensus among all political parties was imperative, especially on the floor of the house, to enable the country to meet socio-economic challenges. He said the issues like electoral reforms, judicial reforms, trade with India and economic woes must be deliberated in the assembly and the role of the opposition in highlighting these challenges was of vital importance. He said both the opposition and treasury benches could develop consensus to introduce policy reforms in the best interest of the masses...... Source: dawn.com

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) on Tuesday said it was appalled by Prime Minister Imran Khan’s remarks linking the incidence of rape to obscenity. “This is unacceptable behaviour on the part of a public leader,” said the body in a statement.“Not only does this betray a baffling ignorance of where, why and how rape occurs, but it also lays the blame on rape survivors, who, as the government must know, can range from young children to victims of honour crimes.”“We demand an immediate apology and renewed commitment on the government’s part to tackling rape as it should — as an act of violence, of power,” the statement added. Editorial: PM Imran’s remarks on sexual violence against women are shockingly insensitivePrime Minister Imran over the weekend held a two-hour long question and answer session with the public, during which he was asked about what steps the PTI-led government had taken to prevent rape and child abuse. After denouncing crimes against women and children, the premier said that sexual violence was a product of ‘obscenity’, which he described as a Western and an Indian import. The premier also spoke of religion and the

concept of ‘purdah’ in Islam. It is to remove “temptation” from society because “not everyone has willpower”, he said. His words did not sit well with some members of the civil society, including lawyer and activist Jibran Nasir who said “rape is a result of power imbalance not temptation”. “Rapists control their urges when they’ve fear of retribution, accountability and conviction and when they’re made free from such fears due to gendered social structures just like ours, they’ll even rape an infant,” he tweeted. According to data provided by the government last year, 11 rape cases are reported every day in Pakistan, while authorities admit the true figure is much higher. Source: dawn.com

ISLAMABAD: The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) has decided to administer Covid-19 vaccines to citizens aged 80 years and above in their homes. The facility will commence in a few days. On the other hand, the country reported 4,323 cases and 43 deaths in a single day. Meanwhile, an American newswire, Bloomberg, has claimed that it would take a decade for Pakistan to inoculate 75 per cent of its population despite the fact that around one million people have already been vaccinated against the deadly virus. According to the NCOC data, 438 ventilators were in use across the country while the number of active cases stood at 61,450. As many as 4,328 patients were admitted to hospitals. The data showed that 936,383 people had been vaccinated till April 3, with 265,831 persons inoculated last week alone. Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar, who chairs daily meetings of the NCOC, on Monday said citizens aged 80 and above would be vaccinated in their homes.Talking to a news channel, he said the decision was taken during the NCOC

meeting, adding that the provinces had been urged to follow suit.He said the step was being taken to facilitate senior citizens as it was difficult for old people to reach the vaccination centres and wait in queues. He said it would have become even more uncomfortable during summer. Mr Umar once again called on people to get themselves registered for vaccination. Meanwhile, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr Faisal Sultan, during a visit to the Tarlai vaccination centre in Islamabad, said the centre had been upgraded with the support of the World Health Organisation and a special counter had also been established there to vaccinate differently-abled people. ....Source: dawn.com

LONDON: A British Labour MP has criticised the UK government’s decision to curtail travel from Pakistan in view of Covid-19 cases, dubbing the move “consciously and knowingly discriminatory”. Bradford West MP Naz Shah wrote a letter to UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, asking for an explanation about why Pakistan was added to the ‘red list’ when it has “substantially lower cases” as compared to France, India and Germany.“What scientific data is any decision being led by?” she wrote, noting that France, Germany and India had 403, 137 and 24 infections per 100,000 persons, respectively, whereas Pakistan had 13. She pointed out that the South African variant was not a concern in Pakistan whereas “it is in France”. “This begs the question why hasn’t the government extended the red list to France, Germany and India”. Letter prompts Asad Umar to question whether UK decision is based on science or foreign policy Her letter came after the UK said Pakistan was on the list of countries from where travelers would have to pay to quarantine in a government-approved hotel ef-

fective April 9. Passengers from Pakistan will be denied entry to the UK unless they are British or Irish nationals or have residency rights. The cost for one adult in a hotel room for 10 days is £1,750, which does not include the mandatory £210 each passenger has to pay for testing in this period. The announcement came as Pakistan’s National Command and Control Centre (NCOC) for Covid-19 reported over 5,000 new cases in the previous 24 hours, with over 80 deaths. The government has been criticised for low testing and a slow vaccination drive, and officials have warned that the third wave of the disease is yet to peak. Source: dawn.com

Awami National Party (ANP) leader Aimal Wali Khan has held the PML-N and the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) responsible for playing a major role in the breakdown of the opposition alliance – Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM). Speaking to Dawn News on the show ‘Live with Adil Shahzeb’ on Tuesday night, Khan said political alliances do not work in this manner. “We can’t even name this alliance the Pakistan Democratic Movement,” he said. He added that the ANP’s politics was

based on principles and, therefore, a decision was made to part ways with the PDM after his party was issued a show-cause notice for its support of the PPP for the Senate opposition leader slot. Khan’s statement came after the ANP announced it was opting out of the opposition alliance following the issuance of a showcause notice to the party by PDM general secretary and PML-N senior vice president Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.Speaking at a press conference at Bacha Khan Markaz, ANP Central Senior Vice President Ameer Haider Khan Hoti had said that there was no room for his party to remain part of the PDM after receiving the show-cause notice. Meanwhile, Abbasi — who also made an appearance on the TV show — said he would speak to PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman about the ANP’s departure from the alliance. Source: dawn.com

In a show of support, Punjab lawmakers from the ruling PTI accompanied sugar baron Jahangir Tareen to court on Wednesday where he and his son had to appear for an extension in their interim bail in cases filed by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). Lala Tahir Randhawa, Raja Riaz, Noman Langrial, Salman Naeem, Ghulam Bibi Bharwana, Khurram Leghari and Abdul Hai Dasti showed up to support Tareen at his hearing. Speaking to the media, PTI MNA Raja Riaz said that PM Imran would not have been successful in winning the vote of confidence from parliament in March without Tareen. “Tareen played the biggest part in obtaining the vote of confidence. Perhaps the prime minister would not have been successful if Tareen had not played his part.” He said that Tareen had played a part in forming the Punjab and federal government.

ISLAMABAD: Four days after the opposition blocked the government’s move to present a resolution in the National Assembly seeking formation of a parliamentary committee on electoral reforms, Speaker Asad Qaiser on Tuesday invited the opposition parties to have the floor of the house for “unlimited days” to discuss key national issues. The offer came from the speaker while addressing the District Bar Association (DBA), Swabi, and in a statement issued by the National Assembly Secretariat after his meeting with federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry earlier in the day in Islamabad. Addressing the DBA, the speaker said he was ready to allow the opposition to hold a debate for an unlimited time on national issues, including electoral reforms, judicial reforms, trade with India and the State Bank of Pakistan. He said resolution of socio-economic issues faced by the country required a political consensus, adding that welfare of the people depended on initiatives taken by the public representatives in the parliament. He said the National Assembly was the only forum to bring reforms and lead the country on the path of development. PML-N, PPP reject offer saying it has come from a

T

RANSFORMATIVE eaders positively change a state’s direction. They induce big changes in political, economic and social institutions and policies whose influence lasts for decades to give major progress. Lincoln, Mahathir and De Gaulle adorn this category. Such leaders differ from revolutionary ones like Lenin or Mao who led armed struggles to overthrow a regime and change the basic political and economic system, eg from autocracy to democracy, though usually with mixed results. Transformative leaders work within the existing system but bring about major changes in institutions and policies. Yet the literature on such leaders eschews a messiah syndrome by tying their success not to individual supernatural qualities but to experience, a capable team and favourable context. Thus, populist leaders promising change based on personal traits like honesty or work in unrelated fields like sports are perhaps not transformative. Also, while the focus is usually on those giving positive change, one can also talk of transformative leaders who gave lasting negative change. Which Pakistani leaders gave lasting positive or negative change? One must begin with Jinnah. While he was a transContinued from Page 1

formative freedom fighter, his role in setting the economic and political direction of the new state was modest, partly due to the short time he lived on. Liaquat Ali ably dealt with the refugee crisis and set up a governance apparatus but one that replicated colonial institutions. He failed to set a new economic and political direction. His most lasting legacy was becoming a US ally which we continued to faithfully be for decades. US ties gave more pain than gain over the years.

Which leader gave us lasting change?

Ayub is wrongly seen by some as our best leader. Yet his centralised political system ended with his era and didn’t gel with our ethnic diversity. His economic model fuelled by short-term US aid was elitist and ignored equity. Both directly led to the 1971 crisis. His economic and political policies were reversed soon after his departure. His lasting legacies were corruption in the highest office, cementing of the army’s political role and elite state bias. His industrial and green revolution policies had some lasting impact but also led to elitism and inequity. Bhutto dismantled Ayub’s system quickly. He introduced a devolved parliamentary consti-

tutional system that was wellsuited given our ethnic diversity and which has survived for decades despite the best attempts by unelected forces to end or hobble it. Yet, while introducing it in theory, he himself undermined it in practice via his autocratic rule. He politicised the bureaucracy. His state-led economic model was in line with the times but was poorly executed. He crafted an independent foreign policy but it did not survive his end. But his nuclear ambitions did. The ties he formed with Gulf states continue to give remittances that balance out our perpetual trade deficits. But it also led to brain drain and dependency. It was Zia who mainly shaped the deeply flawed social, political, economic, security and foreign policy structures of today’s Pakistan. In each sphere, he injected new toxic strains, elevated existing ones hugely or reversed gains from previous eras. Socially, he cemented bigotry, deep conservatism and politics of faith. Politically, he ensured a move from issues-based to corrupt patronage politics. Political corruption became endemic in his era. The foreign policy mix included raising militants to achieve regional aims, which unleashed huge terrorism at home later. The security policy mix included extensive surveil-

lance of society by intelligence agencies. Economically, he left a state that ran high fiscal and external deficits and debt levels. The involvement of the military in business increased hugely to reduce private sector space. Pervez Musharraf ruled for long but gave no lasting political or economic change. Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif had brief, interrupted eras that too gave little lasting change. That said, the 2008-2018 civilian era preceding the current failed hybrid one did produce incremental and gradual positive political change without being transformative. So our most transformative ruler was Zia, but unluckily, one with a very toxic legacy. Other dictators also gave major negative legacies. The most positive legacy is Bhutto’s parliamentary system though he gave many negative legacies too. Unelected forces have partly undermined even that positive legacy. No leader gave a positive economic legacy in the form of a vibrant, sustainable and equitable economic model. Given this sorry story, its unsurprising that Pakistan suffers today from major perpetual political instability, economic stagnation, external servility, extremism and insecurity, even by South Asian standards. How to prepare for Ramadan 2021?

S

ome years ago, there was a vibe about the way Muslims approached the holy month of Ramadan. Preparing for the blessed month had its own charm, its own flavor. But life has become so haphazard, so messy in the 21st century that we have forgotten the traditions of our Prophet (PBUH). Yes, He (PBUH) used to prepare in advance for the holy month of blessings! It makes all the sense in the world as well. You see, fasting doesn’t refer to just abstaining from food. Rather, you should think of it as a refresher course that tweaks your character back to a refined version. The acts, the deeds which help you celebrate Ramadan in proper spirit! If you are looking for an article that helps you recall these acts so that you are well prepared for Ramadan 2021, then you have landed on just the right page!

Five acts essential to the preparation

Of course, there are more than just the five acts that can help you prepare for Ramadan 2021. But because of the obvious limitation of time and space, we are going to discuss the top five habits you need to adopt, at least three months before Ramadan 2021!

1-Fasting

Fasting before fasting, yes you read that right. If you had the misfortune of missing a few fasts in Ramadan 2020, here is your chance to make up for the lost opportunities. There is enough time left for you! But even if you are on schedule, you can still fast for the sake of your health. The junk that we keep eating all year accumulates into our body cells, in the form of toxins. Fasting will definitely help you get rid of these toxins, and contribute to be an amazing transformation in your life. It is a matter of control more than anything else, and fasting before Ramadan will give you that control for sure!

2-Praying

Not talking about obligatory prayers here! But if you have missed some of your obligatory prayers since the last year or so, now is your chance to make up for the lost chances. However, if you are on schedule in terms of your prayer count, you should use this time to pray Nawafil. The benefits of praying Nawafil are too many to be covered in this limited space. All we can say that if you make a habit of praying Nawafil now, it will be much easier for you to carry the routine moving into Ramadan 2021!

3-Repenting

We sin, we repent and then we sin again. Allah’s (SWT)’s mercy is something many of us take for granted, but when one has an opportunity to think about things, one becomes more and more cognizant of the fact that we don’t deserve this benevolence as sinful beings. The fact that the doors of benevolence are open for us till the last breath tells you a lot about how much Allah (SWT) cares for us, his (SWT)’s mere subjects! Now, we all are living busy lives, hence the opportunities to take some time and self-evaluate are scarce. Ramadan is one such opportunity that you should definitely avail of. But that process of self-evaluation has to start sometime before Ramadan, and it has to start now!

4-Eating

You are complaining about fasting because you aren’t doing it the right way! While it is understandable that some key elements are missing from your diet while you are fasting, you have to work out a way in which you can replenish yourself with these lost items in your pre-dawn meal and iftar. There is still some time left before we welcome Ramadan 2021, use this time to evaluate the nutritional content of different food items. Do not let your cravings get the better of you, go for healthy! Overeating and hunger strikes are two extremes, one should adopt the way of moderation. And that is going to be possible only if you can make a diet plan which supplements you with enough energy!

5-Donating

Although the donation is not bound by a specific time or month, Muslims love to donate more in the holy month of Ramadan. And the reason is simple, everyone wants to double the blessings and the promised rewards on offer in return for charity! Apart from Sadaqah, zakat is the symbol donation of Muslim charity. And if you have paid zakat previously, you will know that calculating zakat can be a real challenge. So, if you are going to pay zakat in Ramadan 2021, now would be the best time to prepare your zakat sheets in Excel! You will

also need to identify the candidates who are worthy of your zakat money. One option that you can consider is charity organizations and NGOs. One organization that you can donate your zakat money to is Transparent Hands! Pay Zakat Online A bit about Transparent Hands Transparent Hands is the largest technological platform for crowdfunding in the healthcare sector of Pakistan. It offers a complete range of free healthcare services including medical and surgical treatments, medical camps, and telehealth facilities to the underprivileged community of Pakistan. The platform provides visibility to underprivileged patients and builds a personal and trusted bond between patients and donors while ensuring complete transparency. It also sets up free medical camps in the rural areas of Pakistan in which, free medical consultation, free medicines, and free diagnostic tests are provided to deserving patients. Donors from all over the world can use the Transparent Hands crowdfunding web portal and donate through 100% secure payment modes. They could select any patient, fund the treatment, and receive regular feedback and updates until the patient has recovered completely.

Conclusion

Well folks, time to wrap up this debate about Ramadan preparations, but we do hope you learned a lot from this discussion! Apart from becoming familiar with how you can prepare for Ramadan 2021, you now also know of a place, a route through which you can help the underprivileged members of society. Hopefully, any ambiguities that you had in mind before reading this discussion are now gone. And with that happy thought, we bid you farewell from this discussion! Source: transparenthands.org

How to Pray Tarawih at Home – Do I Pray 8 or 20 Rakat? Can I Read From a Quran? All Answered

Q: What is tarawih?

A: Tarawih prayers are Sunnah (1) prayers performed at night after Isha (2) Salah during the month of Ramadan. These night prayers have been emphasised in Ahadith (3) and can also be called “qiyam al layl” (night prayers). Tarawih prayers are classed as either Sunnah mu’akkadah (emphasised Sunnah) or nafil (optional). Q: Why should I pray tarawih? A: There are many rewards for praying the tarawih prayers: Additionally, as the rewards for good deeds are multiplied during the month of Ramadan, the rewards for tarawih are even greater: During the time of the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬, the tarawih prayers were prayed in congregation for a short period of time, after which

the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬changed this practice and performed the prayer at home. This was done out of fear that people would start to consider it to be compulsory. During the time of Umar ibn al Khattab (the second caliph), may Allah be pleased with him, twenty rak’at (6) of tarawih prayer were led in congregation daily. These practices established by Umar ibn al Khattab came to be recognised as Sunnah, based on the hadith: Q: How do I pray in congregation at home? For a female-only congregation: The woman who leads the prayer (imamah) will stand in the first row, between the other women in her row. A second woman (preferably not the imamah) will say the iqamah*. The imamah will recite everything as she normally would. Qur’an recitation, and all the takbeerat for changing positions, should be said out loud. Anyone who is following her in prayer (in technical terms called a muqtadi) should follow her actions and make sure that they don’t precede her—e.g. a muqtadi cannot go into prostration before the imamah does! For a congregation with a male imam: As a muqtadi, there is no difference between following a male or female imam, and the prayer will be made in the same way. The only difference is in the forma-

tion of the rows: a male imām will stand in front of the rows of men and women (on his own), rather than between them. Praying at the mosque vs at home Q: Where do I pray tarawih? A: You can pray tarawih in congregation in a masjid, as most masajid (15) will hold tarawih prayers (when not in lockdown!). However, you can also pray tarawih at home, alone (please see above for the how to), or in congregation with family and friends. I have fond childhood memories of gathering with cousins and attempting to finish twenty rak’at amidst laughter, tiredness and midnight snacks! As the tarawih prayer is not one of the five compulsory prayers, it is actually recommended to pray it at home so that you can vary its length according to your own concentration levels. Q: What about if I start praying some rak’at in the masjid and complete the rest at home? A: That is absolutely fine; you can pray some in the masjid and some at home. This is usually nice as you get to experience both types of prayer: the congregational prayer and the solitary prayer . Q: If I pray at home, can I take a break or a nap in between, or do I have to pray it all at once? A: Taking breaks or taking naps in between

is fine. It’s important to make sure your body is rested so that you can concentrate as much as possible in your salah. May Allah accept all our acts of worship this Ramadan. Former B.C. premier, cabinet ministers to What happens when women run the testify at money laundering inquiry economy? The US is about to find out The Canadian Press Staff VANCOUVER -- A commission of inquiry into money laundering in British Columbia is adding former and current cabinet ministers to its witness list. On its website, the Cullen commission says former premier Christy Clark is among those scheduled to testify later this month. Former B.C. Liberal cabinet ministers Rich Coleman, Michael de Jong and Kash Heed will also testify, along with Shirley Bond, the party’s interim leader who served as Clark’s public safety minister and attorney general. The commission says Attorney General David Eby will testify as well. They are expected to testify from April 19 to 30. The B.C. government appointed Supreme Court Justice Austin Cullen in May 2019 to lead the public inquiry into money laundering after three reports outlined how hundreds of millions of dollars in illegal cash

affected B.C.’s real estate, luxury vehicle and gaming sectors. The province granted the commission an extension in March to produce its final report, which is now due on Dec. 15. This report by The Canadian Press was first published April 6, 2021. Source: vancouverisland.ctvnews.ca

Calls grow to end ‘blind bidding’ to cool red-hot housing markets across Canada OTTAWA -- Some real estate experts and would-be homebuyers are calling for an end to “blind bidding” as a way of cooling what they say is an unsustainable housing market. Karen Scutt is in the market for a new home in Toronto and placed an offer $100,000 above the asking price of a $1.8-million home, only to find out within minutes that she was out of the running as someone had bid upwards of $400,000 more than the asking price.“They’re pricing the houses so much under what they want that even if the listing is in your range, you’re already resolved that you’re not going to get it,” she told CTV News. When she was placing a bid on the home, Scutt was told that there were six other bidders, but wasn’t told who they were or how much they had bid. This process is referred to as “blind bidding,” and the lack of transparency can lead to properties being sold for thousands of dollars more than they need to be. For example, if there are three bidders looking at a home, one could bid at the asking price, one could bid $5,000 more than the asking price and the third could bid $25,000 more than the asking price. Without knowing what the other bidders offered, the third

bidder essentially paid $19,000 more than what would have sold them the house. Blind bidding is becoming more common in Canada but has concerned some economists, who believe the housing market is overheating and becoming unsustainable. “We think that if we’re going to have an auction process that should be transparent and open to all bidders,” said Douglas Porter, chief economist at the Bank of Montreal. In Australia, the preferred method of home sales includes an auction outside the home on a predetermined date. With this method, potential homebuyers can see who else is bidding and exactly how much they’re offering........Source:aljazeera.com

OTTAWA -- The minister who’s been at the helm of the federal government’s health response to the COVID-19 pandemic for more than a year now says that a “full investigation” into Canada’s response is required, at the “appropriate time.” “We are still in a crisis and so our focus remains right now on getting Canadians and Canada through this global health crisis… And when the time is right, our government will be very open to examining very thoroughly the response of this country to the COVID-19 crisis,” Health Minister Patty Hajdu told reporters on Tuesday. Her comments come in response to Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole pledging Tuesday that if a Conservative government is elected, he’d launch a national public inquiry “to examine every aspect of the government’s pandemic response.” O’Toole said that while Canada should focus now on get-

ting through the pandemic, when it is over Canadians need answers and to implement the lessons learned. “We need to know what worked and what didn’t. We need complete transparency and accountability,” he said. Hajdu wouldn’t confirm that the Liberals would back a public inquiry, but said that the intent would be to have all Canadians participate. “We’re open to, you know, an inquiry that is as deep as necessary… that gets to how our country can be better prepared to global health threats in the future,” she said. In the interim, O’Toole is pushing for the federal government to appoint a “special monitor” within the office of the auditor general to track Canada’s ongoing pandemic response. O’Toole said this independent role within the auditor general’s office would “make sure in real time we examine decisions made so that there could be a transparent examination in the future.” A recent report from the federal auditor general found that the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) “underestimated” the potential impact of COVID-19, and was not adequately prepared to respond in the early days of the pandemic after failing to heed decades-long recommendations for changes. Some of these recommendations not taken dated back to 1999. Women now hold many of the jobs controlling the world’s largest economy — and they’re trying to fix it. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and trade czar Katherine Tai hold top jobs in US President Joe Biden’s administration and many of his economic advisers are also women, as are nearly 48 per cent of his confirmed cabinetlevel officials. This sea change may already be affecting economic policy — a new $2.3 trillion spending plan introduced by Biden last week includes $400 billion to fund the “care economy,” supporting home- and community-based jobs taking care of kids and seniors, work normally done by women that has mostly gone unacknowledged in years past. The plan also has hundreds of billions of dollars more to fix racial and ruralurban inequalities that were created in part by past economic, trade and labor policies. Yellen says the focus on “human infrastructure,” and the earlier $1.9 trillion rescue bill should result in significant improvements for women, whose share of the workforce had hit 40-year lows even before the crisis, and for everyone else as well. “In the end, it might be that this bill makes

80 years of history: it begins to fix the structural problems that have plagued our economy for the past four decades,” she wrote on Twitter, adding, “This is just the start for us.” Women leaders can bring fresh perspective to economic policy, experts say. “When you’re different from the rest of the group, you often see things differently,” said Rebecca Henderson, a professor at Harvard Business School and author of “Reimagining Capitalism in a World on Fire.” “You tend to be more open to different solutions,” she said, and that is what the situation demands. “We’re in a moment of enormous crisis. We need new ways of thinking.” Source:dawn.com

Indian security forces intensify operations against left-wing rebels after they killed 22 policemen in an ambush last week. Indian security forces have stepped up operations against ultra left-wing fighters deep in the forests of a mineral-rich central state after they killed 22 policemen in an ambush over the weekend, a top police officer said. At least 30 other members of the security forces were wounded in the four-hour gun battle with Maoist rebels that took place in Chhattisgarh state on Saturday, the deadliest ambush of its kind in four years.“The operation will be intensified,” said Om Prakash Pal, the deputy inspector general of police, who is leading the fight against the rebels in Chhattisgarh, on Monday. The Maoists, also known as Naxals, have waged an armed struggle against government forces for decades. They say they are fighting for the poor who have been left behind in India’s economic boom.Chhattisgarh, one of the fastest-developing states in India, has 28 varieties of key minerals, including diamonds and gold, a government website said. It also holds 16 percent of India’s coal deposits and large reserves of iron ore and bauxite. The Maoists, considered by the government as India’s biggest internal security threat, operate in mineral-rich territory in the east and south of the coun-

try known as the “red corridor,” which has shrunk in recent years because of heavy operations against them. But last week, some 400 Maoists armed with grenades and automatic rifles attacked a police raiding party in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh. Pal said the rebels also suffered losses and local media reported that drone surveillance showed them taking away bodies. “They are definitely trying to strengthen themselves but the forces put a lot of pressure on them. Now they are confined only to very few pockets. In their core area they are shrinking very fast,” Pal told the Reuters news agency, adding security forces were stepping up their intelligence-gathering efforts as well......Source: aljazeera.com

Korean leader Kim Jong Un has acknowledged his country was facing the “worstever situation” as he addressed thousands of grassroots members of his ruling party during a major political conference in Pyongyang.Experts say Kim is facing perhaps his toughest moment as he approaches a decade in rule, with North Korea’s coronavirus lockdown unleashing further shock on an economy devastated by decades of mismanagement and crippling U.S.-led sanctions over his nuclear weapons program. The North’s official Korean Central News Agency said Kim made the comments during an opening speech at a meeting of the Workers’ Party’s cell secretaries on Tuesday. “Improving the people’s living standards ...

Rule-breakers still responsible for much of B.C.’s COVID-19 transmission, officials say – a situation that played out with disastrous results in Whistler this year. Henry stressed that the issue isn’t limited to any one industry, location or cluster. There are people across the province going against B.C.’s public health order that bans indoor gatherings among members of different households, she said. This behaviour has become an even bigger problem as Canada grapples with variants of concern that spread more easily and can potentially cause more severe illness – including in younger people. Officials confirmed another 207 infections involving variants of concern on Tuesday, bringing the provincial total to 3,766. The vast majority of those are the B.1.1.7 variant associated with the U.K. And while most B.1.1.7 cases are concentrated in the Lower Mainland, Henry cautioned the variant is spreading in all corners of the province. “We all have the ability to slow that down,

and this is a time where we can do that. All of our connections need to be safe connections,” Henry said. That means meeting people outdoors, and only meeting people from the same small and consistent group. It also means staying distanced, wearing masks, and washing your hands.“If you choose to spend time with anyone other than your immediate household, it must be outside, it must be done safely, it must be small,” Henry said. “Let’s ensure we don’t lose anymore ground.” B.C.’s case numbers reached a new record high over the Easter weekend, as did the number of patients battling COVID-19 in intensive care. Meanwhile, two Vancouver restaurants drew backlash after openly defying another order that temporarily prohibits serving customers inside. Both Gusto and Corduroy Lounge have had their business licences suspended until April 20. While B.C.’s numbers have been alarming, and many people have expressed

Columbia over the last day, health officials said. That’s nearly as many as the province’s record of 1,072 cases identified in a single day, which was set over the Easter weekend. Speaking at a news conference Tuesday, the province’s top doctor started her update by saying, “We’ve had another big day today.” Speaking from Vancouver alongside Health Minister Adrian Dix, Dr. Bonnie Henry said the update brings the total number of cases VANCOUVER -- Another 1,068 cases of confirmed since the start of the pandemic to COVID-19 have been confirmed in British

105,988.It also pushes B.C.’s weekly average up toward the 1,000 mark. With the latest data, that average is now sitting at 993. Additionally, three more deaths have been attributed to the disease, Henry said. The death toll in B.C. has now reached 1,489. She expressed her condolences to the family, friends and caregivers of those who’ve lost their lives during the pandemic. As of Tuesday’s update, 328 patients were being treated in B.C. hospitals for the novel

VANCOUVER -- There are still too many B.C. residents gathering indoors, defying public health orders and ignoring the increased threat posed by COVID-19 variants of concern. That’s according to provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, who once again sounded the alarm about rule-breaking behaviour Tuesday as B.C. neared a weekly average of 1,000 coronavirus cases per day. “Much of the increased transmission we’re seeing in the last little while is being driven by social gatherings, where people are disregarding our provincial safety precautions,” she said. ”And it’s particularly notable in our younger demographics now, because many young people live, work and socialize in the same networks.”Henry said it’s easy for the disease to spread when people live with half a dozen roommates, some of whom may work at different restaurants or stores where they can pass COVID-19 along to their colleagues

frustration that others are apparently not following the rules, Henry said there’s hope for the summer if people can buckle down for a few more months. “I am confident that we will be in a very different position by this summer – that is a prediction that I will make right now,” she said. “We have to work together to get through it. Let’s all pledge to do our part today to break these chains of transmission that we’re seeing.” Source: bc.ctvnews.ca

B.C. should vaccinate essential workers.....

Continued from Page 1 Dr. Brian Conway at the Vancouver Infectious Disease Centre agrees. “We have to have a very dynamic vaccination plan that would now favour I would say younger adults, who are fueling transmission,” Conway said. They acknowledge there may be some push back from British Columbians in their 50s and 60s who are next in line to be vaccinated. They think an education campaign on the benefits of vaccinating younger frontline

workers would help. “I want to just shout out to those 50 and 60 year olds: What is better than having a vaccine in six weeks? You know what’s way better than that? It’s having a vaccine in eight weeks, but having only a quarter of the risk of exposure for those eight weeks. That is actually better for you,” said Colijn. Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says the province has already been vaccinating employees at some high-risk workplaces

with Pfizer and Moderna. “Quite frankly, they often are the larger workplaces where people are more poorly paid, and we know that it involves many of our racialized communities, people who live in large, multi-generational homes. So that has been out focus to start with,” said Henry. She won’t commit to making Pfizer and Moderna available to all frontline and essential workers, instead hoping Johnson & Johnson doses arrive later this month to

jump start that campaign. Conway says it’s a mistake to wait. “I hope that there are people advising her on this being a very credible option,” he said. Colijn predicts if B.C. continues to focus on age-based vaccination, COVID-19 case numbers will keep rising. “I think we are in for really rough ride in the next few months anyway, but much much rougher if we cant stop transmission,” she said. The situation has renewed a push for the province to grant paid sick leave, as many workers deemed essential during the pandemic have been unable to take time off when sick, which advocates say is fuelling the spread of the virus. Andre Picard, a health columnist at the Globe and Mail newspaper, said the latest modelling data estimates Ontario could see as many as 6,000 new COVID-19 infections

coronavirus – the most people hospitalized since Jan. 25. Of those, 96 are in intensive care units. Hospitalizations are often seen as a marker of the severity of the pandemic. Picard criticised the province’s measures, questioning why “relatively low-risk activities such as outdoor dining are being stopped, while high-risk activities such as large church services can go ahead” and retail stores remain open. “As the third wave of the pandemic continues to pick up steam, we have seemingly learned nothing from the two previous waves,” he wrote. Intensive care unit physicians in Ontario last week urged the provincial government to impose stricter coronavirus restrictions amid a surge in cases.CBC News reported that an average of 72,543 jabs are administered in Ontario daily, despite having the capacity to get as many as 150,000 shots in arms. In total, the province had administered more than 2.6 million jabs as of Monday evening.

In a separate news conference on Tuesday, Ford said the province would expand access to COVID-19 vaccines, targeting people with underlying health conditions and their caregivers, as well as geographic hot spots that have seen rising cases. He also said Ontario was “finalising plans to vaccinate workers in settings where we’re seeing outbreaks”. “Last week I said we were in a fight with a new enemy, one that is rapidly evolving. The game is changing and we need to shift our response to stay ahead of this virus,” Ford said. Source: aljazeera.com

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was taken aback to find her fellow top EU official taking the only chair available next to Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan when the duo visited Ankara, and her spokesman made that clear on Wednesday.Footage from their meeting on Tuesday showed the first female head of the EU, the only woman in the talks, gesturing in disbelief and uttering a surprised sigh as Erdogan and European Council President Charles Michel took the two centre-stage seats prepared, relegating her to an adjacent sofa. “The president of the commission was clearly surprised,” said the EU executive arm’s spokesman, Eric Mamer. “The president (von der Leyen) should have been seated in exactly the same manner as the president of the European Council and the Turkish president.” The Turkish government did not immediately respond to a request for comment. However, a member of the European parliament, Sophie in ‘t Veld, asked why Michel had not reacted. While the commission conveyed von der Leyen’s irritation, an EU official who declined to be named said that to do so might have provoked a “protocol and political incident, both towards Turkey and the European Council”. “Turkey meant no disrespect,” the official

said. “It extended a very courteous welcome to both presidents and strictly adhered to international protocol.” In the past, three chairs were provided when the Turkish leader visited Brussels for talks with the heads of the Commission and the European Council, which collectively represents the bloc’s 27 member states. Mamer said von der Leyen decided not to make “an issue out of it” and in the conversation brought up women’s rights and the Istanbul Convention on violence against women, from which Turkey withdrew last month. Ties between Brussels and Ankara have been strained since a coup attempt in 2016 prompted a crackdown on civil rights in Turkey, but they are now testing a cautious rapprochement. Source:dawn.com

Iran and the world powers still party to a 2015 nuclear deal will meet again in Vienna on Friday as attempts to return the United States to the landmark accord intensify. Iran and the major world powers still party to a 2015 nuclear deal have met for talks in Vienna, Austria as attempts to return the United States to the landmark accord intensify.Talks were held in the city’s Imperial and Grand hotels between representatives of Iran, China, Russia, Germany, France and the United Kingdom. The countries will continue to discuss ways to revive the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) that former US President Donald Trump unilaterally abandoned in May 2018, Iran’s deputy foreign minister told state television on Tuesday following the meeting.“The talks in Vienna were constructive … our next meeting will be on Friday,” Abbas Araghchi, who is leading the Iranian delegation in Vienna, told Press TV. “We continue to reject any agreement concerning the release of $1bn of Iranian money [frozen in South Korea] in exchange for stopping 20 percent uranium enrichment,”

he said in reference to an offer that the US reportedly put to Iran shortly before the Vienna talks began. Russia’s delegate Mihkail Ulyanov said on Twitter that the meeting was “successful”. “The restoration of JCPOA will not happen immediately. It will take some time. How long? Nobody knows,” he wrote. “The most important thing after today’s meeting of the Joint Commission is that practical work towards achieving this goal has started.” A US delegation was also in the same city trying to save the accord, but the team led by Special Envoy to Iran Robert Malley did not take part in the talks with other world powers, as Iran has said it will not directly negotiate with the US until all harsh sanctions imposed by Trump and still enforced by President Joe Biden are lifted.......... The Biden administration will restart more than $200m in aid to the Palestinians, including restoring funding to UNRWA. The Biden administration has announced plans to resume funding for the United Nations agency that supports Palestinian refugees, which has faced a dire financial situation since former US President Donald Trump cut US assistance in 2018. In a statement on Wednesday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the United States would provide $150m in humanitarian assistance to the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). UNRWA provides aid and other services, including health care and education, to about 5.7 million Palestinian refugees in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip,

Lebanon, and Jordan – and the agency welcomed the US announcement. “UNRWA could not be more pleased that once again we will partner with the United States to provide critical assistance to some of the most vulnerable refugees across the Middle East and fulfill our mandate to educate and provide primary health care to millions of refugees every day,” UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini said in a statement. ...Source aljazeera.com

OTTAWA -- NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is standing by several controversial proposals from rank-and-file party members while rejecting more extreme ones -- including a call to abolish the military -- ahead of this weekend’s policy convention. Singh’s tightrope walk has him hovering between the party’s grassroots and the broader Canadian public, with an eye to pleasing enough of both to boost New Democrats above their fourth-place ranking in the House of Commons in a potential election this year. A resolution from the NDP’s Spadina-Fort York riding association commits to “phasing out” the Canadian Armed Forces and retraining service members into civil service roles. “I don’t agree,” Singh said at a virtual press conference Wednesday. He said the military provided critical support at long-term care homes during the COVID-19 outbreaks last year, and he has called for further deployment to assist in the vaccine rollout. Singh declined to take a stance on potential policy planks that demand the removal of all statues of Sir John A. Macdonald and the addition of Indigenous symbols to the Canadian flag. But he sympathized with the ideas behind them. “We’ve got to be very aware of the message certain monuments and statues send in public spaces, and be open to moving with the times,” Singh said. If the legacies symbolized by a particular figure, image

or building name are unwelcoming or disrespectful of “Indigenous persons and diversity,” they may need to be relocated, redesigned or retitled, he said.“There always will be a place for remembering our history, and sometimes that place maybe is best served in a museum or in history books, and not always in public places.”Macdonald was Canada’s first prime minister but his role in establishing colonial systems, including Indian residential schools, has led to calls for multiple statues across the country to come down. Singh also weighed in on a proposed resolution condemning Quebec’s Bill 21, which bans religious symbols such as turbans, kippas and hijabs for employees of the state deemed to be in positions of authority, including police officers and teachers. Singh called the law “discriminatory,” particularly against women, but acknowledged the importance of separating church and state. Source: ctvnews.ca

OTTAWA -- The pressure on the federal Liberal government to introduce a universal basic income ratcheted up a notch Wednesday with a report from the parliamentary budget officer that suggests it could cut poverty rates in Canada by almost half in one year. The report landed just one day before the opening of a three-day virtual Liberal convention, where Liberal MPs and grassroots party members from east to west are pushing the idea in top priority policy resolutions.

Eye color genetics not so simple, study finds

Researchers have identified 50 new genes for eye color in a study involving the genetic analysis of almost 195,000 people across Europe and Asia. he genetics of human eye colour is much more complex than previously thought, according to a new study published today. An international team of researchers led by King’s College London and Erasmus University Medical Center Rotterdam have identified 50 new genes for eye colour in the largest genetic study of its kind to date. The study, published today in Science Advances, involved the genetic analysis of almost 195,000 people across Europe and Asia. These findings will help to improve the understanding of eye diseases such as pigmen-

T

tary glaucoma and ocular albinism, where eye pigment levels play a role. In addition, the team found that eye colour in Asians with different shades of brown is genetically similar to eye colour in Europeans ranging from dark brown to light blue. This study builds on previous research in which scientists had identified a dozen genes linked to eye colour, believing there to be many more. Previously, scientists thought that variation in eye colour was controlled by one or two genes only, with brown eyes dominant over blue eyes. Co-senior author Dr Pirro Hysi, King’s College London, said: “The findings are exciting because they bring us to a step closer to understanding the genes that cause one of the most striking features of the human faces,

which has mystified generations throughout our history. This will improve our understanding of many diseases that we know are associated with specific pigmentation levels.” Co-senior author Dr Manfred Kayser, Erasmus University Medical Center Rotter-

dam, said: “This study delivers the genetic knowledge needed to improve eye colour prediction from DNA as already applied in anthropological and forensic studies, but with limited accuracy for the non-brown and non-blue eye colours.” Source: sciencedaily.com

South Africa beat Pakistan by 17 runs in 2nd ODI despite Fakhar’s 193 South Africa held out to level the ODI series 1-1 with a 17-run win over Pakistan on Sunday that was much closer than it should have been because of Fakhar Zaman’s brilliant 193 in a losing effort. Fakhar’s score came from 155 balls and he hit 18 fours and 10 sixes to give South Africa a big scare in the second one-day international. Pakistan were 205-7 at one stage before Fakhar really got going, but ultimately finished on 324-9, chasing 342 to win at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. Source:dawn.com

the go-to method of keeping young, fit and healthy. One of the more obvious results of fasting is alleviating obesity; fasting prompts the liver’s enzymes to break down cholesterol and fats to convert them into bile acid, which, in turn, converts to heat – ultimately stimulating faster metabolism. Naturally, fasting also decreases the appetite which reduces the hunger hormone levels in the body. You may just find your portion sizes being significantly smaller following a period of fasting. Fasting can lead to a healthier heart, lowering cholesterol and promoting improved muscle performance along with enhanced blood vessel growth. Fasting also goes a sig-

nificantly long way towards balancing the mind and reducing mental stress. Fasting is also known to strengthen the mind, sharpen focus and provide mental clarity – this is primarily due to a reduction in calorie, sugar and salt intake. Should You Take a Painkiller Before Your COVID Vaccine?

By Steven Reinberg HealthDay Reporter Feb. 18, 2021 (HealthDay News) -ou finally managed to score an appointment to be vaccinated against the new coronavirus and you’re a little nervous about side effects, so taking a painkiller right before you get your shot seems like a smart idea. Not so fast, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Instead, the agency is telling people not to take pain medications like Motrin, Advil or Tylenol before getting their COVID-19 vaccines.

Y

Why?: It’s possible that taking a painkiller before getting a vaccine will result in a “decrease in antibody response,” explained Dr. Gregory Poland, director of the Vaccine Research Group at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Although the odds of a diminished immune response aren’t really known, Poland said it’s better to suffer the side effects than take the chance of making the vac-

cine less effective. “After receiving the vaccine, if one develops symptoms that they feel they want to treat, it’s fine, but ideally not before,” he said. “Now, that’s a recommendation by CDC, out of an abundance of caution.” There are exceptions, however: People who usually take pain relievers, such as migraine sufferers, should of course take their medication, he added. “Go ahead and take it rather than end up with a full-blown migraine and end up in the ER having to get much more intensive or expensive therapy,” Poland said. He also noted that the aftereffects of the vaccine can differ between the two doses, with the effects after the second dose typically being worse. “I’ll tell you after my first dose, I had a little bit of a sore arm. After the second dose, I had a moderately severe sore arm, and I had four hours of shaking, chills with a 101-de-

gree fever along with fatigue, headache and ringing in my ears. I took one dose of Tylenol, went to bed, woke up the next morning and was 80% to 90% better, and within that half-day, back to normal,” Poland said. These side effects are caused as the body’s immune system revs up to fight the invader, which is just what’s needed to produce the antibodies to blunt the virus. Before getting vaccinated, people need to set their expectations appropriately, Poland said. “The symptoms are transient, they’re self-resolving, they are not an indication that something’s going wrong,” he said. “If need be, go ahead and treat them.” The CDC also cautions against taking antihistamines like Zyrtec or Claritin before getting the COVID-19 vaccine, “because they could mask the onset or development of allergic or hypersensitivity reactions,” Poland added. Dr. Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children’s Hospital of Phila-

delphia and a member of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee, agrees that it’s not a good idea to take a pain medication before getting a vaccine. “My general belief on this is it’s never a good idea to blunt fever, because fever is an adaptive part of your immune response,” he said. “Let your immune system do its job,” Offit said. “The second dose was pretty rough. I had fatigue and fever, but I handled it by whining. Whining was my way of handling it.” Source: webmd.com

Changes In France - What’s Going On

rance is making big changes and they are directly affecting the Muslim community. It all starts with the French president, Emmanuel Macron. On October

Continued from Page 7

2, 2020, President Macron announced his plan to combat “Islamic separatism”. First he declared he planned to train the new generation of imams, who are people in Islam who are in leadership positions, within the country so that they align with the republic’s values. He added that the French Council of Muslim Religion will formalize the new training and suggests that French Muslims prioritize the country’s beliefs over their religious beliefs. This action stigmatizes Muslims but he didn’t just stop there. Next, the president targeted the estimated 50, 000 children in France who are homeschooled. Macron once again preached “antiseparatism” and claimed that children should be educated at school on the basis that chil-

dren are more likely to be radicalized at home. Macron is taking away an essential freedom of people in their country but wait there’s more. In the week of April 1st, after a reading of Macron’s “anti-separatism” law, the French Senate moved to approve the amendment on banning Muslim women under 18 from wearing hijabs in public, another amendment would ban parents from participating in school trips with religious clothing on. Both amendments still need to pass through the National Assembly but if passed, police would effectively be given the right to harass and arrest Muslim youth, and virtually anyone wearing clothing that they deemed inappropriate under the language of the bill. Normal parts of Muslim lifestyles are now

being labeled as examples of ‘separatism’ and the Muslim community is openly being targeted. Muslims everywhere are outraged and protesting these unfair and cruel changes.

Weekly average nearing 1,000 daily COVID-19 cases as B.C.’s top doctor announces

three per cent involve variants of concern. Sixty-three are in hospital, the majority of whom have the B.1.1.7. variant often associated with the U.K. These variants have, in some instances, been tied to a greater severity of symptoms, particularly with younger people. They also transmit more easily, Henry said. And the health officials have noted through contact tracing that residents of B.C., especially younger people, are now socializing

with larger groups. Gatherings are a major source of transmission in the province, she said. Younger people may be socializing in smaller groups, but are seeing multiple groups. This age group also is more likely to live with roommates and work in a public-facing job, leading to something of a ripple effect. Her concerns are shared by those working in B.C.’s hospitals. Speaking to CTV News Monday, an emergency room doctor said he’s been alarmed by recent hospitalizations, and noted an influx in young people ending up in B.C. ERs. While older people are still most at risk, according to Dr. Michael Curry, he suggested more restrictions are needed to keep those under the age of 40 out of hospital until vaccines are available to that age group.

Henry said 912,056 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been given in the province at this point. Of those, 87,474 are second doses. Approximately 16 per cent of British Columbians have been vaccinated, Tuesday’s update suggests. The province launched its online vaccination booking system Tuesday, which also allows residents of B.C. who are not yet able to get their shot to pre-register for the vaccines. The government will then contact those who’ve registered when they are eligible. In the age-based system, people born in 1950 and earlier are now able to book their appointments, as well as Indigenous adults of all ages and people considered to be clinically extremely vulnerable. Additionally, some people working in certain professions considered to be of higher

risk were eligible for the AstraZeneca vaccine. However, that program was halted last week due to concerns about the vaccine from Health Canada. It remained “on pause,” as Henry put it, on Tuesday. Information about the vaccine is still being analyzed, she said. She’s hopeful to have more information “very soon.” In the meantime, the AstraZeneca vaccine will be given to older people in the province, as it’s considered safe for some age groups. “As soon as we have the ability we will jumpstart our worker program once again,” Henry said, asking those impacted by the pause to “be patient.” When it comes to active outbreaks, health officials are currently dealing with nine in acute care and three in longterm care, assisted living and independent living, Henry said. o v erseas writers

lhamdulillah, The Miracle Media has been getting a graet response from overseas readers on its website, online e-paper, and Facebook., and we receive emails, calls, and articles to publish. In this edition, we are publishing local and overseas writers with their biographies one Urdu writer/poet from California, and the others from Canada and Brazil.

Muhammad Nasrullah Khan (Writer/Author)

M

uhammad Nasrullah Khan is a Pakistani-Canadian writer. His short stories are well-recognized internationally for his unique prose style, and really naive innocence of rural life of Asia. His short stories Donkey-Man and Only Nada Lives were nominated for the Story South Million Writers Award. Enlivened by the stories of great English and Russian writers, he has taken a pinch of fact and a cup of fiction to weave an embroidered creative work of adoration, trust, and agony in his stories. His work has appeared in Adbusters, Evergreen review, Indiana Voice Journal, Newtopia Magazine, Gowanus Books,Offcourse literary Journal University at Albany, The Raven Chronicles, and many others. Storyteller is well-taken in the literary circles. Contact: @nasar_peace , nasar_peace@hotmail.com, nasar_peace@yahoo.com, and https://www.facebook.com/nasar.peace “

Facebook In Pakistan – The 8th Wonder Of The World!

M

any of my old friends that I’ve known since I was young are on Facebook. Back in the day they would lose their head

T

if someone found their precious little secret diary! And now look at them. Their whole life is on display on Facebook. Little do they now care that the whole world now knows which public toilet they just came out of. My name on Facebook is “No One”. Thats right, first name – no last name – one. That way every time I “like” someone’s mind numbing post it now says “No one likes this”. Don’t you think Facebook is like your wife: asking you every day -“What’s on your mind?”. It seems to me that for Pakistani users it’s more like “Tell the whole world every single thing that is on your mind!” Those of you that have ever visited this part of the world may have noticed a close resemblance between Facebook and the chalking you see on walls. When I last visited Pakistan with my son last year, he saw this chalking and remarked, “What is written here, Baba?” For once in my life I was glad he can’t read Urdu! A few attempts at trying to dodge answering the question failed, as my clever little son reloaded with more questions. Finally, I succeeded, “This, son, is the Facebook timeline in Pakistan”. He didn’t want to know any more. After a visit to the typical disgraceful public toilet in Pakistan, he commented on the wall chalking in toilet, “Baba, I guess this is the twitter of Pakistan!” Moving on about wall chalking, let me share a few of the wonderful messages written on walls; it was written: “Pakistan ka matlab kya…Haseena Beauty parlour”. These two different messages were merged together narrating the fact. Right next to this lovely message was the warning: “It is against the law to urinate, write or stick posters on this wall. Violation will lead to legal action as defined by the penal code of Pakistan.” Oh look how effectively the “penal code” is implemented in this glorious country against the innocent urinators!

Doctors today are suffering the greatest threat to their profession yet: Facebook. Because let’s face it: who needs a doctor when you have a newsfeed. I have found the cure to every ailment possible ever since I found this source of never-ending medical wisdom on Facebook! Every morning when I check my Facebook feed, lo and behold, I find the most astonishing claims for avoiding diseases. Apparently, I now have the “secret” to COMPLETE masculine energy. All I need to do is purchase this “secret” herbal medicine, discovered in the jungles of CHECHOO KI MALIAN. A secret which was only shared with…. I don’t know…. 3 million people? It makes me wonder, how come we keep discovering secrets for masculine energy. No secrets left to discover for feminine energy? I am now not only an expert on masculine energy but also a spiritual guru, thanks yet again, to Facebook. I now know at least 50 different ways to reach heaven, including chanting mantras, wearing ruby necklaces and eating goats cheese. Most of all, Facebook has made me an informed citizen of the world. I am now the first to know when Obama comes out of a public toilet, when Selena Gomez does her waxing and when strangers randomly start dancing to Gangnam style in a mall. I also know all the vitally important on-goings of my close friends and relatives. Facebook allows me to stalk people without breaking the law. The other day, thanks to Facebook, I received breaking news that my friend had egg-fried rice for dinner and vanilla cheesecake for dessert. The next morning he went to the Veterinarian because his girlfriends’ cat needed a check-up. I also learnt the intricacies of a crew hairstyle from another friend. It was insufficient for him to simply post a picture after his haircut, he needed to clarify: “A crew cut graduated in length from the longest hair at the front hairline to the shortest at the back of the crown”. Another fascinating aspect of the Pakistani Facebook experience is all the wonderful

Vida de Jeca. The author of Penedo, in the south of Rio de Janeiro, has already sold his works in France, Germany, USA, England, India, Japan, Australia, Spain and throughout the country. Raphael Bruno was born in Resende, on June 30, 1983. With his eclectic style, he acts, improvises and scripts his videos on the internet. In 2019, he was a finalist in the Olho Vivo Award in the internet category. In 2018, the versatile artist was a finalist in the poet and books category with e-book Marketing. In 2020, he was nominated in the actor and poet category. He won the award for best comedian at the Andrelândia Community Radio Festival. His first literary work was with the book

Musicas e Poesias, in 2016. In the following year, he created his humor channel that bears his name by joining followers from all over the country. With great skill in writing, he created several anecdotes. Raphael Bruno has also written numerous phrases of optimism, chronicles, materials, poetry and scripts. In addition to idealizing several characters. In 2014 and 2015 it had its program on local radio, with the name of Coração pra Coração (success in the city). In 2018 he was a commentator for the radio Frenética Web. This year he was a commentator for Rádio Capital 777 and currently works as a reporter for Rádio Tropical AM, in the program Falando Geral. His first radio appearance

poetry. It seems that you simply cannot rid yourself of poets. If you decide to block one of these literary geniuses, suddenly ten others show up out of nowhere. It’s like the story of hydra, you can cut its head off, but two new heads grow. In this part of the world, it seems we have so many poets that scientists have found a genetic link between Pakistani DNA and Facebook poetry. I know one Egyptian sociologist who studies cultural differences across the world who commented: “Kulo Pakistani Sho’ra. Mashallah Tabrak’Allah” which translates to “All Pakistanies are poets”; to which I replied, “Yes, and all Egyptians are Doctors”. “I’m sure you know that monkeys were once humans who were turned into monkeys as a punishment.” Yes, I know it very well. He replied. “And I also believe poets were once humans too. As punishment they were sent to exile on Facebook and condemned to a punishment of lifelong poetry.” I left him surprised. I had an interesting exchange with one of my e-friends in America who has a weird fascination for donkeys. He sends me a new picture every day with a donkey. One day I said to him, “You know Dave, if you like donkeys so much you should visit Pakistan. We have an abundance of them here! The last time the census counted the population, they included donkeys as well in their estimate. In Pakistan, we have donkeys in the farm, on the streets, and most of them have their Facebook accounts.” I recently found an excellent relationship advisor, on Facebook by the name of Wise Friend, who helped solve all my troubles with my wife. Previously, I was getting bombarded every night with her yack-yack after a tired day at work. On his advice, I bought a new smart phone for my wife and created a Facebook account for her. NOW, I can finally say… I’m a happily married man. A cell phone with your wife’s Facebook account is the best marriage counselor in the world!
