Ceasefire needed in Israeli-Palestinian conflict to avoid loss of more civilians: PM Trudeau
O
TTAWA -- Canada is calling for a ceasefire in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to stop the violence that has been escalating in the region, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday. At a news conference in Ottawa, he said Canada will work with the international community to de-escalate the situation to avoid more loss of civilian life. “Our hearts go out to Israelis and Palestinians for the violence that is surrounding them right now,” Trudeau said. ”We’ve all seen the tragic images, families, innocent kids affected. It needs to stop.” Hundreds have died in recent
days after Hamas and other militant groups in Gaza Strip launched rockets and Israel unleashed airstrikes. Gaza’s Health Ministry says the Israeli airstrikes have killed at least 213 Palestinians, including 61 children, and wounded about 1,500 Palestinians. Israel says 12 people have died in rocket attacks, including two children, and at least 300 have been wounded. The United States signalled it would not pressure the two sides for a ceasefire even as President Joe Biden said he supported one. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin To be Continued at page 7

ctivists demand Pakistani government and world powers intervene to stop the deadly violence. By:Imran Gabol | Imtiaz Ali Hundreds of Pakistanis took to the streets in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore on Monday to protest Israel’s continued attacks on Gaza, demanding that the Pakistani government as well as world powers intervene to stop the deadly violence that has now claimed more than 200 — overwhelmingly Palestinian — lives. In Lahore, the Progressive Students’ Collective (PSC) and Lahore University of Management Sciences (Lums) students staged a protest at Liberty Chowk in solidarity with the Palestinians and
against the Israeli government. The protest was joined by at least 800 students and local activists. In their speeches, the organisers strongly condemned Israel’s atrocities against Palestinians and said that the West, especially the United States, had “sponsored Israeli settler colonialism”. PSC leaders said the unification of progressive forces on a global scale could help them fight Israeli “fascism” and support the Palestinians. During the protest, powerful slogans in favour of Palestine’s liberation were continuously raised. Thousands turn up at ‘Pakistan for Palestine’ demonstration in Karachi In a massive show of solidarity with Palestinians, thousands of Karachiites turned up at the unprecedented ‘Pakistan for Palestine’ demonstration at the Karachi Press Club (KPC) on Wednesday, demanding an immediate ceasefire from Israel and an end to the bombing of Gaza. The demonstrators, including representatives of the the Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ), Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), Pakistan Medical Association (PMA), National Trade Union Federation (NTBA), Home-Based Women Workers Association and the Karachi Tax Bar Association (KTBA) along with thousands of citizens, called for an immediate end to the occupation and demolition of Al-Aqsa Mosque and Palestinian settlements, including Sheikh Jarrah, and for an end to the forced eviction of local Palestinians. The idea for the protest started from social media and ended up at the KPC, with a large number of citizens, mostly young college students, from across a cross-section of society condemning Israeli onslaught
of violence. Holding placards condemning the genocide of Palestinians, the protesters chanted “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” The crowd was unprecedented and the numbers kept going up, as a result of which the areas around Zainab Market, Saddar and Shaheen Complex saw gridlocks for hours. Neha Mohammad and her husband Abdul Kaleem Shiekh, a young Karachi couple, were accompanied by their children and family members at the protest. Talking to Dawn.com, Mohammad said she saw the call for protest on social media. Commenting on the situation in Palestine and the killing of innocent children, she said, “We were feeling helpless sitting at home. This is the least we can do to show support to the Palestinians.”Source: dawn.com
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed the commitment to uplift the weak and underprivileged segments of society in a ceremony to distribute 1,500 houses and flats to labourers on Thursday. Minister for Communications and Postal Services Murad Saeed has said the premier’s promise to provide shelter to the homeless will be fulfilled. A ceremony for the distribution of the houses was held in Islamabad. After a brief speech by PM’s aide on Overseas Pakistanis Zulfi Bukhari, balloting for the homes was done. PM Imran Khan handed over the keys to those whose names were selected. Having your own home is a blessing, PM
Khan said as he spoke about the impossibility of the common man to own their own home in the current economic situation. He said the government is paying Rs300,000 on each flat and house. Interest rate on these houses will stay the same at 5% for the next 20 years, despite fluctuations in the country’s interest rates. Nobody ever thought about the marginalised groups of society, the premier said. PM Khan said there is a boom in the construction industry due to the incentives given by the present government. He said this will not only lead to wealth creation but also provide job opportunities to the youth. Source: dawn.com

All mafias have joined hands to get NRO: Imran
PESHAWAR: Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that all mafias have joined hands to get NRO, reiterating his resolve that he would not grant reprieve to anyone. He was speaking at a ceremony held to inaugurate a low-cost housing colony for labourers and industrial workers here on Wednesday. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Shah Farman, Chief Minister Mahmood Khan, ministers and parliamentarians also attended in the ceremony. The prime minister said the country could make progress only when there was su-
premacy of law, adding that it was impossible to give NRO to the rich and have a separate law for the poor. “All mafias have joined hands and are trying to get NRO, but I will not do it. Mr Khan said Pakistan was a big dream but no one explained what the dream was, and Allama Mohammad Iqbal was a great exponent of the dream. One of the objectives of the creation of Pakistan was to lift the poor but nobody paid attention to it, he added. FM gives call for protests against Israeli atrocities on Friday
ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Monday used the National Assembly platform to give a call for countrywide peaceful protests against the ongoing Israeli aggression in Palestine on May 21 (Friday).Winding up discussion on Israeli atrocities before leaving for Turkey, Mr Qureshi said Prime Minister Imran Khan had agreed to the proposal and he was making the announcement with his (PM) permission. The foreign minister said Pakistan and Turkey had decided to move the United Nations against the Zionist atrocities on the Palestinian people, adding that he would be leaving for Turkey after the session where he would also meet Palestinian and Sudanese foreign ministers. He said a demand would be made to convene an emergency session of the UN General Assembly where he and his Turkish counterpart would raise their voice for Palestine. Talking about the situation in Gaza, he said first and foremost, a ceasefire should immediately be observed in Palestine. Two important meetings on the Palestinian issue were held on May 16. One was a meeting of the OIC Executive Committee on Foreign Affairs and the other of the UN Security Council. The Security Council meeting was chaired by the Chinese foreign minister. Mr Qureshi praised the Chinese leadership, saying “China tried to unite the Security Council and all members were convinced, but unfortunately the United States vetoed it”. He, however, said it could not be done at the United Nations General Assembly. He assured the lower house that the government would never ignore the issues of Palestine and Kashmir. “Admittedly, the path is difficult, the world has a double standard but the truth carries great weight,” he added. Mr Qureshi said at the foreign ministers’ meeting of the OIC Executive Committee, he strongly and unequivocally condemned the Israeli aggression against the Palestin-
ians. “In this regard, I contacted the foreign ministers of various countries, including the United States, China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Palestine, and presented Pakistan’s position,” he said. The foreign minister said people had taken to the streets in the western capitals to protest the serious human rights violations in Palestine. Demonstrations are also taking place in European countries and an EU meeting has been convened on Tuesday. Mr Qureshi said in the age of social media, Palestinian voices could not be forcibly suppressed and media houses could not be bombed into silence. He said Pakistan had a clear position that Israel, which was hell bent upon oppressing people in Gaza, should not be compared with the Palestinians who were facing barbarism.“Today is the test for the Muslim Ummah’s unity. Human rights organisations must eliminate double standards and stand with the Palestinians,” Mr Qureshi said. The lower house also unanimously adopted a resolution, expressing deep concern over the increasing violence and brutality perpetrated against the Palestinian people by the Israeli apartheid regime. The resolution moved by the foreign minister strongly denounced the systematic and brutal disenfranchisement, exclusion and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people. The lower house condemned the attacks by the apartheid Israeli regime on worshipers in Al Aqsa Mosque during Ramazan and attempts to stop the call to prayers. Source: dawn.com
Malik Riaz, 2 others refused to give samples for Covid-19 test: Lahore airport manager Real estate tycoon Malik Riaz, his wife and another member of his team allegedly refused to undergo Rapid Antigen Testing (RAT) for the coronavirus upon landing at Lahore airport in violation of National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) instructions and SOPs, according to a senior official. In a letter written to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) headquarters in Karachi dated May 17, 2021, Lahore airport chief operating officer and manager Akhtar Mirza said the Bahria Town CEO refused to give samples for the Covid-19 test even when a team of airport health staff went to his residence for the purpose. According to the communiqué, seen by Dawn. com, Riaz along with four other people landed at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport via a chartered flight from Dubai at around 10:30pm on Sunday. After the passengers passed through the immigration process, CAA duty staff requested them to undergo RAT, a rapid diagnostic test that directly detects the presence or absence of an antigen and gives results in five to 30 minutes. “But they did not respond and rapidly moved towards international arrivals exit gate,” Mirza stated in the letter. The letter written by Lahore airport’s manager. He said CAA officials informed the group about government instructions regarding the Covid-19 antigen testing requirement “but in vain”. However, later two members of Riaz’s team underwent RAT and were found negative for Covid-19.But Riaz, Bina Riaz and Shahid Mahmood Qureshi “left the airport without [the test] which is an open
violation of NCOC instructions and SOPs”, the letter added. It said the CAA management then contacted the government health team and Riaz’s personal staff officer to obtain the RAT samples from the property tycoon’s residence. A two-member team of airport health staff subsequently left for Riaz’s house shortly after midnight on Sunday “but unfortunately once again [he] flatly refused to give samples for the requisite test” and airport staff returned to the airport at 1:40am.The letter was submitted to the airport services director at CAA Karachi headquarters for his “information and further necessary action”.After detection of the coronavirus in some passengers arriving in Pakistan from abroad, despite them possessing negative PCR test results, the CAA last week tightened rules regarding testing. “Upon conducting an investigation into the issue, it has been found that passengers travelled to Pakistan using fake PCR negative test results and endangered not only passengers travelling with them, but also undermined the intense efforts being made at the national level to curb the spread of Covid-19,” the CAA said in a notification dated May 10. T
HERE are striking similarities between Benjamin Netanyahu and Narendra Modi, not the least their cynical methods of staying in power. But there are differences too. One rose, self-confessedly, from a humble tea vendor at the railway station, the other was a military commando before becoming a right-wing demagogue. The unlikely doppelgangers thrive on dividing people, polarising them along religious or ethnic lines even as they manipulate political outcomes to their advantage. They don’t always succeed, of course, but this is the one method they know. Consider the current flare-up in the violence between Hamas and the Israeli military. It reads like a chapter from Balakot or Muzaffarnagar together with a campaign thrown in to ‘reclaim’ a Jewish temple from the site of a Muslim mosque. In its bare form, the HamasIsrael violence is in fact taking place in Netanyahu’s interest if not also at his bidding. Following inconclusive elections in March, the Israeli prime minister needed to remove the prospect of conviction over corruption charges. He couldn’t muster a majority and President Reuven Rivlin, a Likud colleague but hostile to Netanyahu, has given up to June to his rivals to stitch up a viable government. The coalition can work but it needs the help of an Arab group who Netanyahu had wooed in the past. This time around he needs to subvert the prospects of a possible alliance of leftists, rightists and Arabs, not least because it would be ranged against him.

Beyond backchannel talks
Modi like Netanyahu has sown mistrust between communities for political profit.
Driving a wedge between Israeli Arabs (they don’t like to call them Palestinians) and Jewish parties would accomplish the required outcome. The needless police assault on Muslim worshippers at Al Aqsa mosque together with a stepped-up drive to evict Arab residents from their abodes in East Jerusalem has led to history repeating itself. Violence has broken out not only between Palestinians in Gaza and West Bank on the one side and Israeli troops on the other, but Arab and Jewish residents of Israeli cities who have lived in relative peace for years have turned on each other, not completely but sufficiently to spoil the optics for a rapprochement between communities now seen as mutually hostile. It has shades of the Modi formula, so much so it cannot be ruled out that someone has been exchanging notes on their behalf. There has been more bad news for Netanyahu. Like his kindred spirit in New Delhi, Netanyahu had sought to put a spin on his mishandling of the pandemic. Modi lost a string of key elections at least partly due to the skyrocketing body count while the one significant election he won in Assam was with the help of local tribal chiefs and Congress party turncoats. Israeli media have cited polls suggesting that if an election were held now, Netanyahu’s Likud party would lose more than a quarter of the seats it took in March. Many would go to another right-wing party led by Naftali Bennett, his former aide.
Will the visual pummelling of Hamas improve Netanyahu’s ratings? In a small victory for Netanyahu, as a consequence of the politically induced Arab-Jewish violence, Bennett has had to row back from eyeing a government with Ra’am (United Arab List) head Mansour Abbas. He has informed fellow opposition leader Yair Lapid the idea was off the table. Lapid had been asked by the president to attempt to form the government. The problems have not abated for Netanyahu. He still needs a way to win reprieve from conviction and possibly imprisonment. Speculation is rife that he might throw himself in the fray as a presidential candidate in elections due on June 2. The indirect election through the Knesset could produce the needed immunity, but will he have the numbers in what is traditionally a secret ballot? There’s a possibility that he may back a candidate who would give him immunity. So it all seems to be about Netanyahu fighting conviction. But it has had an effect on the larger political architecture concerning the Middle East. It has forced President Joe Biden to take his eyes off China and potentially get sucked back into a place where his political options do not necessarily blend with his Russia-specific agenda in Europe and his promise to revive the anti-China pivot to the east. With the former Iranian foreign minister Ali Akbar Velayati calling his Hamas counterpart to extend support against Israel — “the spider in its web” — the apertures have opened wider. Right now, Netanyahu is fighting to prove his credentials as
a pugnacious leader who could not be trifled with. When needed he could even go for a showdown with Barack Obama, remember? Will he win the battle with Hamas and at what cost? Israeli opponents have been warning of civil war-like conditions in strife-torn Israeli cities. As for Israel’s military superiority, everyone knows that it has a humungous capability to pound at will Hamas bases in Gaza. But not everyone knew that Israel’s so-called iron dome of antimissile protection, supposed to give the country its much-touted invincibility from incoming projectiles could be so easily breached. How this may impact Israel’s status as an international vendor of fail-proof weaponry will be decided when the time comes, but, for now it has to be seen how much if any political mileage Netanyahu has extracted by stirring up fresh confrontation with Hamas. Netanyahu has many advantages like Modi. They are both aided and abetted in their pursuit of power by an assiduously loyal and influential media. But as recent elections in crucial Indians states showed, the ground reality is not always amenable to media manipulation. Modi like Netanyahu has sown mistrust between communities for political profit. But how long can mayhem pass for politics, particularly when people are choking to death without any succour in sight? However, both leaders have a great asset in common here, which challenges easy speculation about their political demise — a notoriously divided opposition. KPC Secretary Mohammad Rizwan Bhatti paid tribute to Palestinian fighters who he said were standing firm in the face of Israeli aggression and condemned the “silence” of the United Nations, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and international human rights organisations. The press club’s president, Shazia Hassan, said the UN should take “practical steps” to ensure peace in Palestine. Is the Qur’an not Enough for Guidance?
By: Mohammad Zahid
A
n innocent question but pregnant with sinister implications. Today we are seeing again a rise of those who reject the Hadith of the Prophet and claim to follow only the Quran directly. Why is this a big deal? Because when you remove the Sunnah, you are basically removing the entirety of the Shari’ah. The Sunnah is the key through which you open the door of the Quran. Without that you can only speculate what’s inside and nothing more than that. We’ll let the Quran itself answer the above-mentioned question. But even before even going to the Quran, tell me this – Does the Quran specify that it was revealed upon someone called Muhammad? Does it tell us who was this man receiving the revelation from the Most High? Was he a pure Arab or a migrant Jew? Is it the same Muhammad who settles in Madinah or was it someone else? How do you KNOW? One of our teachers, Sheikh Ibrahim Nuhu, in his commentary of Riyadhus Saliheen mentioned: The Sunnah does not need the Quran to explain what it says. Nowhere in the Quran do you see the Quran explaining what the Prophet’s (SAW)words meant. Rather the Quran needs the Sunnah for explanation and elaboration. Whoever tells us that he can extract the rulings directly from the Quran without referring to the Sunnah, even the most ignorant of the people can tell you that such people are merely playing around. This was the case with one of the first groups that broke away from believers, this is their approach – to focus on the Quran without referring to the Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW). You get the root of the command from the Book of Allah. But how to fulfill it and what are its details? That is explained in the Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW). Why then did Allah say for us to refer to the people of knowledge? Why did Jibrîl have to teach the Prophet (SAW)? Why did the Prophet (SAW)teach and clarify questions? The first step to fight the religion of Allah is to attack the Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW). Check history and you can see where the Orientalists have attacked. They know that they can’t touch the Quran for it has been established and preserved. They can’t criticize it for the Quran is restricted. Allah has blessed the Ummah with men who have become places of preservation and dedicated their lives for the Book of Allah. From the Quran – a Record of the Revelation Given to Prophet Muhammad(SAW) Allah says in the Quran:“Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. It is only a Revelation revealed.” [Surah Al-Najm, 53:3-4] Allah tells us: Move not your tongue with it, [O Muhammad], to hasten with recitation of the Qur’an. Indeed, upon Us is its collection [in your heart] and [to make possible] its recitation. So when We have recited it [through Gabriel], then follow its recitation. Then upon Us is obligated its clarification[to you]. [Surah Al-Qiyamah, 75:16-19] Allah makes three promises here in the Quran: Allah will collect or preserve the Quran. Allah will see to it that it is properly recited. Allah will explain or clarify it What other explanation of the Quran do we have but the Sunnah of the Messenger (SAW) upon whom the Message was revealed. Qatadah reported: I said [to the Prophet’s
wife], “O Mother of the Believers, tell me about the character of the Messenger of Allah (SWT)” Aisha said, “Have you not read the Quran?” I said, “O course!” Aisha said, “Verily, the character of the Prophet of Allah (SWT)was the Quran.” [Muslim] Allah commands us in Surah Muhammad: O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and do not invalidate your deeds. [Surah Muhammad, 47:33] Allah didn’t say, ‘Obey Allah and His Messenger (SAW)’; rather Allah puts even more emphasis by saying, ‘Obey Allah AND Obey the Messenger (SAW).’ The last part of the ayah is very clear in terms of the result for those who reject or miss out on either of the two parts separately. The ways (Sunnah) of the Messenger (SAW) are the ways of Allah..... And whatever the Messenger has given you – take; and what he has forbidden you – refrain from. ...... What does the Messenger (SAW) do after Allah’s instructions to him? He recited to the people Allah’s revelations. He shows them how to be purified. He teaches them the Book. He teaches them wisdom. How does the Prophet (SAW) purify and teach? What is the wisdom being taught? Where exactly can you find these explanations and details which the Prophet (SAW) has set down in word and example and passed on to us through his Companions? How do we know what the Prophet did in response to the ayat after they came to him? Keep in mind that the rules recorded in the Quran are directly from the words of Allah; they do not convey the words of the Prophet (SAW) to his community. Think about it! Through the Quran we know the precise words of the Revelation sent down personally to the Prophet (SAW)), but without the Hadith we do not know how he purified and taught his people, how he explained and applied the ayat to them. We can keep finding many, many more ayat in the Quran which give authority to, and talk about, the Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW). For those looking for the truth this should suffice to force them to think and research the loopholes of what they believe in.......
be permissible treat as permissible, and what you find in it to be prohibited treat as prohibited. (Sunan Abi Dawud)
From our Hadith Scholars – an Understanding of our Islamic Sources
Imam Ahmed in his Musnad records a hadith where the Prophet (SAW) forbade writing down his words, but the very same Imam went on to collect around 40,000 ahadiths and wrote them down. ..... A Had writing down been permanently prohibited, he would have closed off all means of making known the Revelation by prohibiting both the written and the oral transmission of the Sunnah. There are two other hadith reports that are quoted by “Quran only” advocates, reports that speak of this prohibition, but both are weak in narrative (isnâd) status. This prohibition to write down the Hadith was —if we consult the Prophetic timeline— at the very start of the Madinan period. The Prophet (SAW)later allowed this collection in writing, on down the line, once the Quran had been established in the hearts of the people. To say that ahadith began being documented only two hundred years after the Prophet (SAW) is just plain ignorant. Can those who doubt the early attention to preserving the Prophet’s history in word and deed explain why the likes of Abu Bakr, Ali Ibn Abi Talib, Abu Hurairah, Abdullah Ibn Amr and Anas Ibn Malik, etc. each had his own collection of the Prophet’s ahadith writen down!....
If not the Hadith, then How the Quran?
Be it written or be it in oral transmission – we have both the Quran and Sunnah preserved through a chain of narration. The Quran and its varying modes of recitation, like Hafs, etc., each has its own transmission chain tracing it back to the Prophet (SAW). Likewise with the Sunnah. .. Touching upon the detailed and legendary Sciences of Hadith that our 1400 years of scholarship has meticulously built —thus authenticating the words of the Prophet From the Hadith — a Record of the (SAW)— would go over the heads of those
Prophet’s(SAW) Sunnah [Way of Life]
who ignorantly reject his Sunnah. The accomplishments of this specialist science are intricate and mind-boggling in an age which depends upon computer modeling. A Mutawatir type of hadith is considered to be the strongest category in terms of the Science of Hadith. Mutawatir (means ‘successive.’ A successive narration is one conveyed by multiple streams of narrators in such large numbers at all levels of the chain of narrators —all the way back to the source— that it’s impossible that the narrators could have conspired to come together to lie about it. The foremost question that now arises is that if you reject ahadith on the premise that they were narrated by humans —and they could err— then where do you think the Quran came from? Allah didn’t reveal the Quran in the form of a physical book personally handed down from the sky, but rather as speech to be preserved on the tongues, and in the hearts, of the Sahaba. How has this Quran —which you want to follow exclusively— reached you, if not through the very Sahaba whose memories you reject as lacking adequate trustworthiness!
Hand-in-Hand
To summarize, Allah tells us about His Prophet, Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. It is not but a revelation revealed, Taught to him by one intense in strength… [Surah an-Najm, 3-4] We can say that the Quran is a massive collection of mutawatir ahadith in and of itself. Accordingly, the Sunnah cannot be rejected without rejecting the Quran along with it! Instead, the two logically go together, hand in hand. The Quran is a Mutawattir Hadith and the Sunnah is a Wahiy (revelation) from Allah, The Most High. Let that last point sink in and that alone should be more than enough to stop the uninformed talk of excluding the Sunnah as part of the Guidance brought to us by our beloved Prophet (SAW). Now, take for example, the most basic of what Muslims are required to do: the five Pillars of Islam? Shahadah – Salah – Zakah – Fasting – Hajj........ They say that we don’t actually need the Isl. Dt. Day Date Fajar Sunr Dhur Asar Zawal Dhuhr Asar Maghrib Isha Shafi / Hanfi ahadith because Allah has perfected the religion. But what is the day on which Allah 9 Fri perfected the religion? Trump says New York criminal probe Confusion abounds after U.S. border agency bars is in ‘desperate search of a crime’ entry to Canadians looking to get vaccinated Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday attacked New York state’s attorney general for launching a criminal probe of his family business, saying he was “being unfairly attacked and abused.” “There is nothing more corrupt than an investigation that is in desperate search of a crime,” Trump said in a statement, adding that “we will overcome” any attempt at prosecution. The office of New York Attorney General Letitia James, which has been investigating whether the New York City-based Trump Organization falsely reported property values to secure loans and obtain economic and tax benefits, said on Tuesday its probe was no longer purely civil.”We are now actively investigating the Trump Organization in a criminal capacity, along with the Manhattan DA,” or Fabien Levy, a spokesman for James, said in a statement, using the abbreviation for “district attorney.” Trump on Wednesday assailed the investiga-
tion as politically motivated. “The attorney general of New York literally campaigned on prosecuting Donald Trump even before she knew anything about me,” the Republican former president said. James is a Democrat. Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance has been investigating Trump’s pre-presidency business dealings for more than two years. Vance’s office has said in court filings it was investigating “possibly extensive and protracted criminal conduct” at the Trump Organization, including tax and insurance fraud and falsification of business records. UK warns new coronavirus variant may delay reopening
The emergence of the B.1.617.2 coronavirus variant has led some scientists to call for the reopening to be delayed. United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said the country would accelerate its COVID-19 vaccination programme to try to contain a fast-spreading variant first identified in India that could knock a reopening of the economy off track. The UK has delivered one of the world’s fastest inoculation campaigns, giving a first shot to almost 70 percent of the adult population and a second to 36 percent, helping to reduce infection rates and deaths. “It’s more important than ever, therefore, that people get the additional protection of a second dose,” he told a news conference on Friday.“So following advice from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation, we will accelerate remaining second doses to the over 50s and those clinically vulnerable right across the country, so those doses come just eight weeks after the
TORONTO -- Canadians hoping to cross the border for the sole purpose of getting a COVID-19 vaccine will be turned away, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. In a statement to CTVNews.ca on Wednesday, a CBP spokesperson said the Canadian-U.S. border remains restricted to “essential travel” only in accordance with the travel restrictions that have been in place since March 2020. “Travel for the sole purpose of obtaining a vaccination is not permissible under current travel restrictions,” they said. However, the spokesperson added that if the person enters the U.S. for “legitimate travel reasons,” and they receive a vaccine incidental to their trip, “it is not part of the overall admissibility determination.” The U.S. border agency’s
position has created confusion for Canadians who thought they would be allowed to cross the border by land to obtain a vaccine after the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) said it may be considered an “essential medical service,” under certain conditions, and therefore the traveller would be exempt from quarantining for 14 days upon their return to Canada. US, Canada and UK impose new sanctions on Myanmar military
Coordinated sanctions are latest in string of punitive measures targeting Myanmar military rulers and related entities. The United States, United Kingdom and Canada have imposed coordinated sanctions on Myanmar’s military rulers and related entities, the latest in a string of punitive measures since the army seized power in a February coup. The US said on Monday that it was targeting the governing State Administrative Council (SAC) and 13 officials, freezing any of their US assets and barring Americans from dealing with them. Canada said it imposed additional sanctions on individuals and entities tied to the Myanmar armed forces, while the United Kingdom announced sanctions against state-owned enterprise Myanmar Gems Enterprise, which was included in previous US sanctions. “Our actions today underscore our resolve and that of our partners to apply political and financial pressure on the regime as long as it fails to stop violence and take meaningful action to respect the will of the people,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement announcing the move. “Canada stands with the people of Myanmar as they continue to fight to restore democracy and freedom in their country and we will not hesitate to take further action,” Canadian Foreign Minister Marc Garneau also said in a statement. Israel-Hamas truce takes hold after 11 days of fighting
Continued from Page 1
An Egyptian-mediated truce between Israel and Hamas began on Friday, but Hamas warned it still had its “hands on the trigger” and demanded Israel end the violence in Jerusalem and address the damages in Gaza Strip after the worst fighting in years. U.S. President Joe Biden pledged to salve the devastated Gaza. Aerial bombardment of the densely populated area killed 232 Palestinians, while rocket attacks killed 12 people in Israel during the conflict. Palestinians, many of whom had spent 11 days huddled in fear of Israeli shelling, poured into Gaza’s streets. Mosque loud-speakers feted “the victory of the resistance achieved
over the Occupation (Israel).” Cars driving around East Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah at dawn flew Palestinian flags and honked horns, echoing the celebratory scenes in Gaza. In the countdown to the 2 a.m. (2300 GMT Thursday) cease-fire, Palestinian rocket salvoes continued and Israel carried out at least one air strike. Each side said it stood ready to retaliate for any truce violations by the other. Cairo said it would send two delegations to monitor the ceasefire. The violence erupted on May 10, triggered by Palestinians’ anger at what they saw as Israeli curbs on their rights in Jerusalem, including during police confrontations
with protesters at Al-Aqsa mosque during the Ramadan fasting month. The fighting meant many Palestinians in Gaza could not mark the Eid al-Fitr festival at Ramadan’s conclusion. On Friday, throughout Gaza, postponed Eid al-Fitr meals were held instead. In Israel, radio stations that had carried around-the-clock news and commentary switched back to pop music and folk songs.

Trudeau didn’t answer a question on his government’s position on an expected resolution in the UN calling for an immediate ceasefire.Foreign Affairs Minister Marc Garneau’s office said Canada is appalled by the ongoing violence, rising tensions, and the devastating loss of life. “The toll -- particularly on civil-
ians, including women and children -- has already been too great,” Global Affairs Canada said in a release.“Canada continues to express grave concerns over the escalating violence in Israel, West Bank, and Gaza.” The escalation was triggered by days of clashes at Jerusalem’s AlAqsa Mosque, the third holiest site in Islam, which is built on a hilltop site sacred to Jews in the holy city. That followed tensions fuelled by the planned eviction of dozens of Palestinians from the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood of East Jerusalem where Israeli settlers have
waged a lengthy legal battle to take over properties.
A Bloc Quebecois MP’s motion to calling for a ceasefire didn’t get unanimous consent in the House of Commons last week. Stephane Bergeron’s motion denounced the resurgence of violence between Palestinians and Israelis, reiterated support for two state solution, exhorted Israel to stop acquiring more of the Palestinian territory and called on Israelis and Palestinians to quickly return to the negotiation table to find a lasting peace. Handcuffing of retired judge by Vancouver police getting worldwide attention VANCOUVER -- The erroneous arrest of B.C.’s first Black Supreme Court justice last Friday morning drew headlines around the world. The New York Post, The Sunday Times, The Daily Mail and La Nouvelle Tribune based in Morocco, to name a few, featured prominent articles on retired judge Selwyn Romilly’s handcuffing by the Vancouver Police Department. “I want to publicly apologize to Mr. Romilly for his detention,” said Chief Const. Adam Palmer during a news conference Monday. “I know this would have been an unsettling and even traumatic experience for anybody
to go through.” Police explained they received several calls about a man acting violently along the seawall near English Bay on the morning of the arrest. The suspect would act normally and then lash out by kicking, punching and spitting, witnesses said. Authorities said the officers deployed to the scene believed Romilly matched the suspect description. “Police officers are human beings, we make mistakes we don’t always get it right,” added Palmer. “I have spoken to the officer involved, and that officer also apologized for the circumstances on that day.”
Romilly was detained and put in handcuffs, but was soon released when they realized they made a mistake. Vancouver’s mayor confirmed Monday he will be bringing the issue up with the Vancouver Police Board. “We are working on a meeting time right now where we can discuss both this individual incident, and really, systemic racism in our institutions,” said Mayor Kennedy Stewart.Selwyn Romilly is a UBC graduate who served as a provincial court judge for 21 years, and a Supreme Court judge for 19 years. Defence Minister Sajjan was aware of investigation into Fortin in March, PM says he learned ‘weeks ago’ OTTAWA -- Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan was aware in March that a military investigation was underway involving Maj.-Gen. Dany Fortin, several weeks before Fortin stepped aside from leading Canada’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout, CTV News has learned. In a statement to CTV News, Sajjan’s office said the Acting Chief of Defence Staff Lt.-Gen. Wayne Eyre and the Deputy Minister of National Defence Jody Thomas informed minister Sajjan of the ongoing Canadian Forces National Investigation Service (CFNIS) investigation the same month that sources have told CTV News that the allegation that prompted the investigation was brought forward. “The minister asked that the complainant receive any necessary support and stated that the investigation must take its due course,” said Sajjan’s press secretary Daniel Minden. This comes after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters on Tuesday that
he was informed “a number of weeks ago” that an allegation had been made against Maj.Gen. Dany Fortin and that an investigation had been initiated, but he did not receive details about what was alleged. The public was first made aware of the investigation on Friday evening, when the Department of National Defence announced in a brief statement that Fortin would be stepping away from his role overseeing the delivery and distribution of COVID-19 vaccine doses across the country, “pending the results of a military investigation.”..........Source: ctvnews.ca
PBO report finds that NDP plan to slash student debt would cost $4 billion OTTAWA -- The New Democrats’ campaignstyle pledge this spring promised to cancel up to $20,000 in tuition, freeze loan payments through July 2022 and scrap interest payments, among other measures. In a report released Wednesday, parliamentary budget officer Yves Giroux said the proposal would amount to $3.95 billion over five years, with the reduction of as much as $20,000 per student borrower by far the priciest plank.Giroux also calculates that the plan’s extension of the non-repayment period from six months after graduation to five years would actually cut more than $400 million in upfront government costs. The NDP’s announcement of the plan in March came ahead of a possible election this year as federal parties prepare to battle it out for the hearts and ballots of young voters. Statistics Canada found last fall that more than 60 per cent of post-secondary students
Tens of thousands of people from over 100 cities have participated in protests in solidarity with Palestinians. Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets in cities around the world, from New York and London to Cape Town and Auckland, demanding an end to deadly Israeli air raids on the Gaza Strip. The Israeli bombings on Gaza come after weeks of mounting tensions over the looming forced expulsion of Palestinian families from Sheikh Jarrah, a Palestinian neighbourhood in occupied East Jerusalem that Jewish settlers have been trying to expel them from for decades. The situation escalated when Israeli police stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem’s Old City – the third-holiest site in Islam – and wounded hundreds of Palestinian worshippers during several days of violence. Protests broke out across the occupied territories and inside Israel. The Palestinian faction, Hamas, which governs Gaza, launched rockets towards Israel, after it missed a deadline to remove its forces from the mosque compound. The map and list below show the locations where sizeable protests have occurred. More protests are planned throughout the week in several cities worldwide.

US ‘should not be rubber-stamping weapons sales’ to Israel: AOC
Democrats led by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez introduce measure to block $375m arms sale to Israel amid Gaza bombardment. Progressive United States legislators have introduced a measure to block the sale of $375m in weapons to Israel, saying the Biden administration should not be “rubber-stamping” arms transfers to the Israeli government as it bombs the besieged Gaza Strip. On Wednesday, a group of Democratic Party lawmakers led by Congresswoman Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez introduced a resolution to block the recently announced sale of precision-guided munitions to Israel. The Washington Post first reported the Biden administration on May 5 had notified Congress of the deal, which includes Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAMs) used to turn bombs into precision-guided missiles. “The United States should not be rubberstamping weapons sales to the Israeli government as they deploy our resources to target international media outlets, schools, dia’s vast hinterland where public health fahospitals, humanitarian missions and cicilities are weaker.“The people of India — or vilian sites for bombing,” Ocasio-Cortez at least the vast majority — have... come to the conclusion that they have to rely only on themselves, and their families and friends, to protect their lives,” said P. Cjpme Welcomes Ndp Call For Israel Arms Embargo, Urges Other Parties To Follow
Montreal, May 13, 2021 — Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) welcomes the recent call from the leadership of the New Democratic Party (NDP) in support of a ban on weapons sales
to Israel. Yesterday NDP leader Jagmeet Singh asked Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to respond to an escalation in violence in the Middle East by banning arms sales to Israel, and NDP foreign affairs critic Jack Harris said in a statement today that this ban should be maintained “until the end of the illegal occupation.” CJPME congratulates the NDP for putting forward concrete proposals to end Israeli violence and oppression against the Palestinians, and urges all members of parliament and political party leaders to join in the call for an arms embargo. “All too often, political leaders have responded to Israeli violations of human rights with empty words about a two-state solution, but without taking practical measures to stop Israel’s oppressive treatment of Palestin-
ians,” said Michael Bueckert, Vice President of CJPME. “Banning arms sales to Israel is a necessary first step towards putting pressure on Israel to end its human rights violations,” added Bueckert. ust two weeks ago, Human Rights Watch published a report concluding that Israeli officials are committing the crime of apartheid against the Palestinian people. With this new push for sanctions, the NDP has begun to put into practice a policy that was overwhelmingly adopted by NDP members at their party convention in April, when members voted 80% in support of an arms embargo on Israel and a ban on trade with illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories. CJPME notes that the Green Party of Canada (GPC) also adopted
Israel’s attacks on Gaza’s civilian buildings are an attempt to demoralise Palestinians and weaken their resolve. Rami Aldraimli watched in disbelief as the building he had worked in for more than 20 years came crashing down. Following a missile “warning”, Israeli fighter jets late on Tuesday afternoon bombed alAwqaf building, the latest structure to be targeted by Israel during its relentless 10-day offensive on the besieged Gaza Strip.. The five-storey building in western Gaza City housed a number of offices, including of Mashareq, one of Gaza’s oldest and most prominent media production firms. “It wasn’t just a company,” Aldraimli, Mashareq’s 43-year-old executive director, said. “It’s a dream I’ve been working on, building it up until we had 60 employees.” Established in 1999, the company grew to offer advertising and photography services, as well as film production and sound engineering. “Popular singer Mohammed Assaf, before he became famous, recorded in our studios many times,” Aldraimli recalled, proudly. “The place was a dream for many people to work with us,” he said. “We were like a family.” The impact of the building’s destruction, he added, extended beyond the material losses, which are nonetheless significant given the expensive equipment inside the office. “It’s not about the money,” Aldraimli said. “It
was a place to work, hang out at and build memories. It was about the space we created for ourselves. Money can be compensated, but decades of our work as well as our personal memories lost in the rubble cannot be.” Translation: In the blink of an eye, Israel destroyed my place of work, my income, the income of dozens of families. They destroyed Mashareq, the oldest and biggest production and advertising company in Gaza. Scale of targeting civilian areas According to Gaza’s ministry of government information, six high-rise buildings – all iconic city landmarks – have been flattened by Israeli fighter jets since the bombardment began on May 10. They are part of the more than 150 residential and commercial properties that have been destroyed, including buildings that housed 33 media institutions. On Saturday, an Israeli air raid demolished al-Jalaa tower, which hosted many residential apartments and offices, including the bureaus of Al Jazeera and The Associated Press. As in other cases, Israel justified the bombing of the building by claiming it housed military assets of Hamas, the group running the Strip. It has failed, however, to provide any evidence to back up its claim, while press freedom advocates have denounced the attack as a brazen attempt to “silence” journalists covering Israel’s deadly bombardment on the besieged enclave. At least 227 Palestinians, including 64 chil-
dren, have been killed and more than 1,500 others wounded, in what observers say has been Israel’s harshest targeting of civilian areas in the enclave to date. At least 72,000 people have been displaced, the United Nations said, with the majority seeking protection in 58 UNRWA schools across Gaza. At least 12 people have died in Israel in rocket fire from Gaza. Furthermore, the Israeli targeting of vital infrastructure has affected water, sanitation and hygiene services for hundreds of thousands of people. Palestinians stand near the damage following an Israeli air raid on a house in Gaza City on May 19, 2021 [Mohammed Salem/ Reuters] Mohsen Abu Ramadan, a political and economic analyst, said the Israeli strategy of bombing civilian areas and infrastructure is not new. “We’ve seen it in previous offensives, but the scale of targeting civilians this time in the Gaza Strip is much higher,” he told Al Jazeera, arguing that the support of the United States and the European Union and the “incompetence” of Arab leaders enabled Israel to implement such a tactic. In the deadliest single attack yet, Israeli air raids on Sunday killed 42 people, including 10 children and 16 women – all families buried under the rubble of their flattened homes in al-Wehda Street, an upscale, lively area in the heart of Gaza City.
a policy in 2016 in support of arms embargoes and other forms of economic pressure, as well as the termination of military and security cooperation with Israel. However, to date Green Party leader Annamie Paul has not made a substantive comment about the current situation in Palestine, but only released a statement calling for “inclusive dialogue.” In recent days, MPs from other parties have also expressed their concern over Israel’s brutal treatment of Palestinians. On a related note, CJPME is calling on Parliament to hold an emergency debate on the situation in Jerusalem, so that the government’s response to Israeli violence can be held to account. What is behind Israel’s targeting of prominent buildings in Gaza?
“In most cases, civilians are not even warned to evacuate their homes and workplaces, so this Israeli propaganda of sending a warning as a humanitarian gesture before it gets targeted is nonsense,” said Abu Ramadan. The Israeli army has acknowledged its bombardment has resulted in “unfortunate unintended civilian casualties” but Abu Ramadan said the objective behind attacks such on al-Wehda Street was to create discontent and to turn people against the actions of the armed groups in Gaza. “These targets, which have directly affected civilians immeasurably, are aimed to damage the reputation of the armed groups by creating a gap between them in terms of support,” Abu Ramadan said. “Driving Palestinians to demand these groups to stop firing rockets at Israel means a loss of popular support, and that is what Israel is banking on.” Source: aljazeera.com

10 Hea l t h 4 Steps to a Healthy Lifestyle: Test yourself: How do your habits measure up? Shawwal 9, 1442 May 21, 2021
By Kathleen M. Zelman, MPH, RD, LD Everyone knows smoking is bad for your Think you’re leading a healthy lifestyle? Aside from occasionally veering off the path, most of us think we do a fair job of maintaining our health with good (or at least OK) eating habits and physical activity whenever we manage to fit it in. But is that enough to be considered “healthy?” According to a recent study, very few adults actually meet the criteria for a healthy lifestyle. The study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, showed that only 3% of American adults got a perfect score on what the authors say are the four basic criteria for healthy living. Just 13.8% met three of the criteria; 34.2% met only two criteria. Women scored slightly better than men. See how well you measure up on the researchers’ four keys to healthfulness: Do you smoke? Are you able to maintain a healthy weight (a BMI of 18-25), or are you successfully losing weight to attain a healthy weight? Do you eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables daily? Do you exercise 30 minutes or more, 5 times a week? The good news is that these behaviors should not be foreign to you, as all but one are an integral part of the Weight Loss Clinic. Numbers 2 through 4 are the foundation of the WLC program, habits that we continually discuss, write about, and recommend.
health. If you are one of the lucky ones who never became addicted to nicotine, pat yourself on the back. Smokers, I hope you are working diligently to kick your habit. It’s impossible to underestimate the importance of a smoke-free life for your health -- as well as for • the sake of those around you.
4 Steps and More
While those four habits are indisputably important for a healthy lifestyle, some may argue that more factors should be taken into consideration. What would be on your list? Just for fun, I came up with my own personal top 10 list of healthy behaviors (beyond the four basics) that contribute to wellness and • satisfaction with one’s lifestyle: • Brush and floss daily to keep your teeth and gums healthy and free of disease. • Get a good night’s rest. Well-rested people not only cope better with stress, but may also have better control of their appetites. Research has shown that a lack of sleep can put our “hunger hormones” out of balance • -- and possibly trigger overeating. • Enjoy regular family meals. This allows parents to serve as good role models, can promote more nutritious eating, and sets the stage for lively conversations. Being connected to family and/or friends is a • powerful aspect of a healthy life. • Smile and laugh out loud several times a day. It keeps you grounded, and helps
you cope with situations that would otherwise make you crazy. Read the comics, watch a sitcom, or tell jokes to bring out those happy feelings. Meditate, pray, or otherwise find solace for at least 10-20 minutes each day. Contemplation is good for your soul, helps you cope with the demands of daily life, and may even help lower your blood pressure. Get a pedometer and let it motivate you to walk, walk, walk. Forget about how many minutes of activity you need; just do everything you can to fit more steps into your day. No matter how you get it, physical activity can help defuse stress, burn calories, and boost self-esteem. Stand up straight. You’ll look 5 pounds lighter if you stand tall and tighten your abdominal muscles. Whenever you walk, think “tall and tight” to get the most out of the movement. Try yoga. The poses help increase strength and flexibility and improve balance. These are critical areas for older folks especially, and both men and wom-
en can benefit. Power up the protein. This nutrient is an essential part of your eating plan, and can make up anywhere from 10%-35% of your total calories. Protein lasts a long time in your belly; combine it with highfiber foods and you’ll feel full on fewer calories. Enjoy small portions of nuts, low-fat dairy, beans, lean meat, poultry, or fish. • Last but not least, have a positive attitude. Do your best to look at life as if “the glass is half full.” You must believe in yourself, have good support systems, and think positively (“I think I can, I think I can…”) to succeed. Federal government invests $200 million to build an mRNA vaccine plant in Ontario
E
By: John Paul Tasker · CBC News · xpansion of Mississauga, Ont., site will allow Resilience Biotechnologies to produce millions of shots. The federal government today announced a $200-million investment to help a Mississauga, Ont.-based company build a plant that can churn out millions of mRNA vaccines. Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne said the money will be used to expand an existing site owned by Resilience Biotechnologies Inc. to provide “made-inCanada solutions such as vaccines and treatments for future pandemics.” The funds will expand Resilience’s manufacturing and fill-finish capacity for a number of vaccines and therapeutics, including mRNA shots like the ones now being used to fight COVID-19, Champagne said. The government says the plant expansion will create 500 permanent jobs and 50 co-op placements for students once construction is complete in 2024. The addition of some 55,000 square feet of factory space will allow Resilience to manufacture between 112 million and 640 million doses of mRNA product each year. The goal is to leave Canada less dependent on foreign vaccine makers when the next pandemic hits. Resilience is a contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), which means it assembles products developed by other companies. It’s standard for big pharmaceutical companies like AstraZeneca, Merck and Pfizer to outsource the actual drug manufacturing process to third parties. Some companies have sold their manufacturing sites to focus
on research and development. A Novartisowned plant in Boucherville, Que. was sold to Avara, a contract manufacturing operation, in 2018. There isn’t currently a CDMO in Canada that is capable of producing a supply of vaccines sufficient to meet national and international demands. In an interview with CBC’s Power & Politics, Champagne said the federal investment is designed to reverse “four decades of decline” in the country’s biomanufacturing sector. Once at the forefront of global vaccine development, Canada’s life sciences sector has been hollowed out after years of paltry investments by both governments and the private sector. Champagne said Canada had trouble luring any of the big vaccine players to Canada in the early days of this pandemic because there was so little fill-and-finish capacity available here to mass produce shots. (Finish-and-fill refers to the process of filling vials with vaccine and finishing the process of packaging the product for distribution.) “I would say this is a game-changer because with that, we will be able to support a number of vaccine candidates,” Champagne said. “We’ve been looking around to bring everything back to Canada.” Quebec-based Medicago reports promising early clinical trial results Canada has been entirely dependent on foreign sources for shots throughout this COVID-19 crisis. As a result, Canada has had to contend with the threat of export controls and vaccine nationalism, which made for a turbulent first few months of the vaccination campaign.
Based on recommendations from the COVID-19 vaccine task force — an independent body of industry experts assembled to advise Ottawa on procurement — the federal government signed deals AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Moderna, Novavax, Johnson & Johnson, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and Sanofi, and the one Canadian company, the Quebec Citybased Medicago. Last fall, the federal government floated $173 million to help Medicago develop its COVID-19 vaccine and build a large plant to produce it. On Tuesday, Medicago, which is developing the product in combination with GSK, reported positive early clinical trial data on its plant-derived COVID-19 vaccine, which is different than the mRNA shots offered by Pfizer and Moderna or viral vector vaccines from AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson. “After two doses, the adjuvanted vaccine candidate induced robust neutralizing antibody and cellular immune responses in all subjects, irrespectively of age,” Nathalie Landry, the executive vice-president of scientific and medical affairs at Medicago, said in a statement.” These results give us confidence as we continue to move forward with our phase three clinical trial. We hope to add another tool in the global fight against COVID-19, particularly as cross-protection emerges as an important consideration in vaccination efforts worldwide,” she said, referring to the concept of mixing two different vaccine products. In addition to the Resilience funding pledge today and the Medicago commitment, the federal government has already promised some $455 million for a major expansion of Sanofi’s Toronto plant, which will primarily produce flu shots but it can also be retooled to produce vaccines for coronaviruses. Once operational, Sanofi will be able to manufacture enough influenza vaccines for all Canadians each year
at its Toronto facility One Canadian company behind a promising COVID-19 mRNA shot, Calgary-based Providence Therapeutics, has been vocal in its criticism of the federal funding policy. In an interview with CBC News last month, the company’s CEO, Brad Sorenson, threatened to pull out of Canada after repeated requests for government assistance to get its product into development went unanswered. Sorenson has said his product would have been further along had Ottawa come through money in the early days of the pandemic. Speaking on Tuesday, Champagne said he spoke recently to Sorenson and committed more federal support for Providence once its product clears the next phase of clinical trials.“This is not about the minister picking winners. It’s about the science telling us what’s the most promising product,” Champagne said. “If you come with good results, we can support you. They’re in very, very early stages of trying to find vaccines.” Beyond the new money for future vaccine plants, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Tuesday that Canada will receive nine million more mRNA shots from Pfizer in July. That means the New York-based pharmaceutical company will be sending two million vaccine doses to Canada each week for the foreseeable future. Based on those figures, another nine million shots will be delivered in August and September. Canada has ordered a total of 48 million doses from Pfizer, enough to fully vaccinate 24 million people with two shots.. Source: cbc.ca

Israel-Gaza violence: The conflict explained
n escalation of fighting between Israelis and Palestinians has led the UN to warn of a “full-scale war”. The latest violence followed a month of rising tensions in Jerusalem, though the conflict has gone on for decades.
How did it start?
A 100-year-old issue
Britain took control of the area known as Palestine after the ruler of that part of the Middle East, the Ottoman Empire, was defeated in WW1. The land was inhabited by a Jewish minority and Arab majority. Tensions between the two peoples grew when the international community gave Britain the task of establishing a “national home” in Palestine for Jewish people. For Jews, it was their ancestral home, but Palestinian Arabs also claimed the land and opposed the move. Between the 1920s and 40s, the number of Jews arriving there grew, with many fleeing from persecution in Europe and seeking a homeland after the Holocaust of WWII. Violence between Jews and Arabs, and against British rule, also grew. In 1947, the UN voted for Palestine to be split into separate Jewish and Arab states, with Jerusalem becoming an international city. That plan was accepted by Jewish leaders but rejected by the Arab side and never implemented.
The creation of Israel and the ‘Catastrophe’
In 1948, unable to solve the problem, British rulers left and Jewish leaders declared the creation of the state of Israel. Many Palestinians objected and a war followed. Troops from neighbouring Arab countries invaded. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled or were forced out of their homes in what
the country and threaten its existence as a Jewish state. Israel still occupies the West Bank, and although it pulled out of Gaza the UN still regards that piece of land as part of occupied territory. Israel claims the whole of Jerusalem as its capital, while the Palestinians claim East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinthey call Al Nakba, or the “Catastrophe”. ian state. Israel denies this. In another war in 1967, Israel occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank, as well as most of the Syrian Golan Heights, and Gaza and the Egyptian Sinai peninsula. Most Palestinian refugees and their descendants live in Gaza and the West Bank, as well as in neighbouring Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. Neither they nor their descendants have been allowed by Israel to return to their homes - Israel says this would overwhelm
What’s happening now?
Tensions are often high between Israel and Palestinians living in East Jerusalem, Gaza and the West Bank. Gaza is ruled by a Palestinian militant group called Hamas, which has fought Israel many times. Israel and Egypt tightly control Gaza’s borders to stop weapons getting to Hamas. Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank say they’re suffering because of Israeli actions and restrictions. Israel say it is only acting to
protect itself from Palestinian violence. Things have escalated since the start of the holy Muslim month of Ramadan in midApril 2021, with nightly clashes between police and Palestinians. The threatened eviction of some Palestinian families in East Jerusalem has also caused rising anger.
What are the main problems?
There are a number of issues which Israel and the Palestinians cannot agree on. These include what should happen to Palestinian refugees, whether Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank should stay or be removed, whether the two sides should share Jerusalem, and - perhaps most tricky of all - whether a Palestinian state should be created alongside Israel. Peace talks have been taking place on and off for more than 25 years, but so far have not solved the conflict.
What does the future hold?
In short, the situation isn’t going to be sorted out any time soon. The most recent peace plan, prepared by the United States, when Donald Trump was President - called “the deal of the century” by Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu - has been dismissed by the Palestinians as onesided and never got off the ground. Any future peace deal will need both sides to agree to resolve complex issues. Until that happens, the conflict will go on. Source: bbc.com/news
‘I feel helpless’ … Canadians with ties to Israel watch escalating conflict with dread By Nicholas Keung Immigration Reporter The latest Israeli-Palestinian conflict has caught Canadians who have ties with Israel by surprise and many say what everyone wants is peace. iolence on Israeli streets and in Gaza has many Canadians concerned for family members abroad. Here, the Star spoke with a woman with ties to Israel. The companion piece, on Palestinian Canadians marking Eid amid Mideast violence, is here. Find the latest news here. Elana Carr has been in contact with her family in Israel every day this week, checking in for updates on their well-being via WhatsApp. The Toronto woman, who has an aunt and uncle and many cousins living in Israel, is one of many Canadians watching with dread the escalating Israeli-Palestinian conflict. “They sent me photos and you can see the

rockets. For me, I feel helpless. We all have been worried about the (COVID-19) lockdown. But my family and others who have families in Israel, they are in bomb shelters. I have cousins with little kids. It’s terrible and there’s nothing we can do. “One of them just sent me a picture of a missile landed right outside of their house.” Born and raised in Canada to Holocaust survivors from Poland, Carr fundraises here for the United Hatzalah of Israel, which runs a network of 6,000 volunteer medics there. She said her organization is made up of volunteers from all backgrounds, with members who are Orthodox Jews, Christians and Muslims. “People have this stigma that Israelis and Arabs can’t get along and there’s no future for peace,” she said. “It’s sad …. We can live in harmony. When this happens, it’s hard.” She said the latest violence has caught many off-guard. For months, most international media attention focusing on Israel has been about the country’s success in vaccinating its population against COVID-19. “Our government in Israel can’t seem to get themselves together, so there was a joke in
Israel that they were able to solve the vaccine crisis, but couldn’t form a government,” she told the Star on Thursday. “It’s been relatively quiet. I’m surprised and I think Israelis are surprised, too.” Canadians who have worked to foster friendships and peace between Jews and Palestinians said they, too, are saddened by the heart-wrenching violence in Jerusalem and Gaza, just before Eid al-Fitr, traditionally the happiest occasion of the Muslim calendar. “We mourn the loss of lives and trust between Jews and Palestinians, both here and in the Middle East,” said Barbara Landau, co-chair of the Canadian Association of Jews and Muslims. “My fear is that much of our goodwill and decades of constructive effort will be undone by political interests that do not serve the majority of Jews or Palestinians.” Neora Snitz, who moved to Canada from Israel 23 years ago, said she has been in touch with her parents and two siblings back home, but tries to stay away from media reports about the escalating violence in her homeland. “I talk to my family, but I try to just carry on. But it’s quite overwhelming. I check the news a few times a day, but I’m not glued to it, as a
way just to keep breathing and functioning,” said the Vancouver trauma therapist. “That does impact me strongly. I’m less interested about the specific things, but just how they are doing and what’s happening from their perspectives. I don’t need to see images of suffering in order to connect with suffering. I know what’s happening in this chaos.” Growing up in Israel, Snitz said she’s familiar with the tension between the two peoples. “It’s always ready to ignite. All it takes is a spark. I feel people wanted it to be avoided. We need leadership,” she said. “As a therapist, I know people in a state of trauma stay in black and white. They are unable to see humanity in a state of fear and survival. It hurts.”Source: thestar.com

By: Asma Shums, his decade we have been exposed to many fights against injustice around the world and engaged in difficult conversations about once untouched issues. It ranged from questioning the actions of our politicians, injustice to the poor, climate change, government policies, racism, and oppression against minorities. Often times it seems that our input simply does not matter; the world will continue to be the way it and to change it requires the energy and actions of the initiated. This has been proved to be wrong with most issues where the voices of the regular citizen have removed people from positions of power, initiated policies to tackle injustice, racism, and climate change, and more importantly put pressure to create changes on a global scale. to using our voice in the real world, we can create change. What if this commitment still seems overwhelming? What can you do to start being a part of the conversation? If you can’t be the leader, be an ally. To be an ally, you take the struggle as your own and use your privilege and benefits to those who lack it. It involves amplifying the voices that are being silenced. You engage in conversations that are uncomfortable and stand up to against the wrong. It might include acknowledging your own misconceptions and educating yourself as it is solely your responsibility to be a voice of reason and support. Beyond the grand ideas, there are smaller steps that can be taken to be a supportive ally. 1. Research before you jump headfirst into social movements. Use the internet, talk to people of that community, research the history, look at what has been done before and what has worked, watch movies and read books that have put valuable time into
conceptualizing these difficult and intricate issues. 2. Listen to the people who have experienced this and speak up for the values you now embody. With our income and community, we have privilege that allows us to use our voice to spread awareness in communities. Address racist or derogative language used in your family and social circles to challenge beliefs and change the narrative. 3. Be comfortable with being uncomfortable. These actions will bring looks, comments, and pressure to not stir peaceful waters. But the waters are not peaceful, it’s been unsteadied for marginalized groups for years and now is the time to be comfortable with disrupting the status quo. 4. Amplify the voices of the experts and show up fully for your case. Many people in these groups have the knowledge, background, and personal experience to speak on the issues but are often silences. She sacrifices her personal pleasure and ambitions, sets standard of morality, relieves stress and strain, tension of husband, maintains peace and order in the household. Thereby she creates necessary environment for her male partner to think more about the economic upliftment of family. She is the source of inspiration to man for high endeavour and worth achievements in life. She stands by him in all the crises as well as she shares with him all successes and attainments. She is the person to whom he turns for love, sympathy, understanding, comfort and recognition. She is the symbol of purity, faithfulness and submission and devotion to her husband.

The Sahara Desert and Its Growth – What’s Going On
By:Khadija
Nadeem Gr 9
It seems that the Sahara Desert, the second largest desert in the world, isn’t happy with it’s second place position and is determined to take the number one spot. Studies show that the giant desert, which
already occupies about 3.6 million square miles of the African continent, has grown roughly 10% since the 1920s. This is due to climate cycles which is completely natural, but also man-made climate change which is a global threat to us all. "The trends in Africa of hot summers getting hotter and rainy seasons drying out are linked with factors that include increasing greenhouse gases and aerosols in the atmosphere," said Ming Cai, a program director in NSF's Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sci-
ences. To put it shortly, as the Sahara expands, the Sahel (a border region) retreats. This will put human societies and ecosystems at risk. The Africans who live there, lead largely agriculture-dependent lives. As the desert expands, rainfall data determines that multiple new acquirements of land are receiving less rainfall. Researchers are currently focusing on the Sahara but new data shows that it’s possible other deserts are also yet its populace are among those least reexpanding. The African continent is one of sponsible for it, truly a tragedy. the most vulnerable to climate change and

Cyclone Tauktae makes landfall in India’s Gujarat
A powerful cyclone has battered India’s west coast and made landfall in Gujarat after authorities evacuated hundreds of thousands of people. Dubbed an “extremely severe cyclonic storm” by the Indian Meteorological Department, the cyclone, named Tauktae, brought with it wind speeds of 160 to 170 kilometres per hour (99.4 -105.6 miles per hour) with gusts of up to 190 km/h (118 mph), storm surges and heavy rainfall. The cyclone destroyed buildings, uprooted trees and electricity pylons, snapped wires and led to waterlogging and floods in Gujarat as well as Maharashtra and the neighbouring territories of Daman and Diu. The Indian Meteorological Department said it would take up to three hours for the landfall along the Gujarat coast to be completed. The Indian army and navy were on standby
for relief and rescue operations, along with the National Disaster Response Force, Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani said during a briefing. Rupani said he was monitoring the situation with top officials. The extent of the damage in the four districts affected would be clear by morning, he said. Ports and airports in Gujarat were closed and more than 150,000 people evacuated from coastal belts of the Saurashtra and Kutch region to temporary safe shelters. The international airport in India’s financialhub, Mumbai, was closed through the day. More than 50 flights were cancelled. National Disaster Response Force teams and regional responders were working around the clock to restore power supplies and remove trees from roads and key transport arteries including highways, along which
oxygen supplies for COVID-19 patients are being transported from ports in Gujarat. Power back-ups like diesel-powered generators had been installed at many hospitals, officials said. At least 14 people have died so far in incidents related to the storm, six of them in Maharashtra’s Konkan coastal belt, regional officials said. The toll is expected to go up. Tauktae is named after a particularly loud Burmese gecko. The impact of the cyclone was expected to continue for at least 12 hours after landfall. The cyclone began forming over the Arabian Sea more than three days ago and has wrought havoc along India’s western coast, in the states of Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra and finally Gujarat.

The potential impact of the “monster storm” was frightening, Regmi said. Emergency response teams of the Indian Red Cross were working with local authorities on evacuation and relief, according to the statement. India’s western coast is no stranger to devastating cyclones, but changing climate patterns have caused them to become more intense, rather than more frequent. In May 2020, nearly 100 people died when Cyclone Amphan, the most powerful storm to hit eastern India in more than a decade, ravaged the region and left millions without power. Source: News Agencies
Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from coastal belts in all the states and housed in temporary shelters, despite fears of a further spread of COVID-19 in a country that is reeling from a deadly second wave of the pandemic. “This cyclone is a terrible double blow for millions of people in India whose families have been struck down by record COVID infections and deaths. Cyclone Tauktae: Ninety missing at sea in the wake of storm
More than 90 people are missing after a barge off the coast of the Indian city of Mumbai sank amid a severe cyclone. The Indian navy said it had rescued 177 of the 270 people aboard and that efforts to find survivors were ongoing. Three other commercial barges carrying about 700 people are stranded at sea in the wake of cyclone Tauktae, which has battered India’s western coast. Tauktae weakened after it made landfall on Monday, but at least 19 people have already died in the storm. The stricken barge, owned by India’s Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), was carrying personnel deployed for offshore drilling. When the storm struck, the barge’s anchors gave way and it began drifting. The Indian navy has mounted a massive air and sea rescue mission for the missing oil workers, which is being hampered by huge waves: “There are waves of 20 to 25 feet (six to 7.6m), the winds are high and the visibility is low,” said navy spokesman Vivek Madhwal.“Ships and aircraft have been deployed for the search and rescue mission.” A navy spokesman told the BBC it had dispatched three warships to save those aboard the three stranded commercial barges. Two of the barges are off the coast of Mumbai, the
capital of Maharashtra state, while the third is off the coast of Gujarat. ONGC said it had also deployed boats to rescue its personnel. One of the troubled barges, reportedly carrying cargo, had anchored and was about 14km from Mumbai’s coast when it went adrift on Monday. The navy said the barge had since run aground in a rocky patch of the sea. Everyone on board is reported to be safe. The third barge, about 92km from the Gujarat coast, is attached to an oil rig. There are reportedly 196 people aboard and another 100 reportedly stuck on the rig.
the cyclone made landfall in Gujarat state late on Monday with wind speeds of up to 160km/h (100mph). It narrowly missed Mumbai, but the barges adrift off the city’s coast were unable to return to the harbour on time. Winds have ravaged coastal areas in the western state of Gujarat, uprooting trees and electricity poles. In Saurashtra district, electricity supply has been cut as a precautionary measure. About 200,000 people were evacuated across several states as the cyclone approached, bringing with it heavy rains and gusty winds. The storm has hit the region amid a devastating second wave of Covid-19 that has overwhelmed Indian hospitals. Tauktae is the strongest cyclone to strike the coast of Gujarat since 1998. On Tuesday morning, the (IMD) said in a

tweet that the cyclone had further weakened, and would continue to weaken gradually in the next three hours. But authorities have asked people to remain cautious as some areas in Gujarat continue to witness strong winds. Although Covid cases are declining in both states, the devastating effects of India’s second wave are still being felt. More than 200,000 people in low-lying areas were moved to shelters, sparking fears of possible new coronavirus clusters in coming weeks. And the federal government has also ordered the vaccine drive to be halted in several coastal towns believed to be at risk. The storm is also adding to the challenge facing India’s hospitals. Mumbai moved 580 Covid positive patients from dedicated centres to civic hospitals as a precaution. Rescue teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Indian Army have been sent to severely-hit regions in Gujarat state, and the region of Diu. Rains from the storm also killed six people in Kerala, Karnataka and Goa over the weekend as the cyclone moved along the western coastline. Houses were destroyed and electricity was disrupted across several districts in these states. Source: bbc.com
4 killed in dust storm in Pakistan
Karachi [Pakistan] May 19, (ANI): At least four people were killed in roof collapse incidents after a dust storm followed by light rain hit parts of Karachi on Tuesday evening, caused due to the influence of the cyclone system in southern Pakistan’s vicinity. The districts in lower Sindh including Karachi have been under the influence of cyclon-
ic storm Tauktae, and on Monday the mercury rose to 43.5 degrees Celsius in Karachi. According to the Dawn, at least four people were killed in roof collapse incidents after a dust storm followed by light rain hit parts of Karachi on Tuesday evening after the city remained in the grips of a severe heat spell for two days. The strong winds caused roofs to collapse in several areas, killing a man and a woman in Dabba Colony, a nine-year-old child in Shershah, and a man in Baldia No. 14, according to a Karachi Police statement, reported by Dawn. The districts in lower Sindh including Karachi have been under the influence of cyclonic storm Tauktae, and on Monday the mercury rose to 43.5 degrees Celsius in Karachi. Sardar Sarfaraz of the Meteorology department told Dawn that “the dust storm was caused due to the influence of the cyclone system being in
southern Pakistan’s vicinity combined with local weather conditions.” He said, “Karachi could experience gusty winds again until the cyclone system is out of the region.”Sarfaraz noted that the city’s temperature had fallen by 7-8 degrees soon after the dust storm, saying it was likely to drop further as the weather normalises, as reported by Dawn. The official had earlier told Dawn that the storm had started dissipating and weather in lower Sindh would improve by Wednesday as the sea breeze blocked by the storm would resume. “A few dust/thunderstorm-rain [spells] accompanied with gusty winds of 30-50km/h may occur in Tharparkar and Umerkot districts during next 12 hours,” the advisory said, adding that hot and dry weather will continue on Tuesday (today) in Karachi, Hyderabad, Shaheed Benazirabad, Badin and
Mirpurkhas districts, said Pakistan Meteorological Department, reported Dawn. According to the alert, sea conditions will remain rough till Tuesday evening and fishermen of Sindh are advised to avoid going into the deep sea. “They can resume their activities from tomorrow,” it said. 14 PAKISTAN Fawad Chauhdry says no cabinet member involved in Rawalpindi Ring Road scam Shawwal 9, 1442 May 21, 2021
ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information Fawad Hussain on Tuesday made some revelations about the Rawalpindi Ring Road (R3) scandal and said that Prime Minister Imran Khan had asked to probe the matter after an engineer wrote a letter to him, saying that the alignment of the road had been changed. After an investigation was launched into the matter, it was revealed that not only the alignment of the road was changed but it had been expanded towards Attock by 29 kilometres, Fawad said. “The reason for expanding the road was to benefit several housing societies,” said Fawad. Regarding the alleged involvement of Special Assistant to the PM on Overseas Pakistanis Zulfi Bukhari and Minister for Aviation Ghulam Sarwar Khan in influencing the
officials to change the design of the project, Fawad said that so far, there is no evidence of the involvement of any minister or adviser in the Rawalpindi Ring Road (R3) project. He added that Bukhari had tendered his resignation on moral grounds. Both the government functionaries have rejected the accusations, saying they have been “wrongly dragged into the matter. “All citizens are equal in the eyes of law. Now there will be investigations into all allegations whether these are against opposition leaders, cabinet members, the bureaucracy or any institution,” he said in a series of tweets after the R3 scandal exploded in the media. Fawad Chauhdry said the principle of ‘answerability’ would be applicable to everyone facing any accusations, adding it was the change in the system that had been promised.
The minister said it was only possible in Imran Khan’s government that the allegations were probed if levelled against whosoever. He said that contrary to that, during the tenures of PML-N and PPP, media had been highlighting wrongdoings loud and clear, but all went unheard. Now, he said, the PTI government had changed the system as it strongly believed that government officials should have fear of accountability besides influential personalities were also not above the law. Fawad said the PM was apprised about the matter of the Ring Road project that a 23-kilometre stretch was added in the original alignment to benefit housing societies that led to the additional payment of Rs20 billion on account of land procurement. Following this, the minister said the Pun-
jab chief minister, as well as Commissioner Rawalpindi, was asked to probe the matter. According to the initial inquiry, he said, the commissioner confirmed the reports that the former commissioner and some officers were involved in the scandal, suggesting sending the matter to the departments concerned for further investigation. LAHORE: The wait continues for an official announcement from the Pakistan Cricket Board that Abu Dhabi will stage the remaining 20 matches of the Pakistan Super League season which was disrupted due to a Covid-19 outbreak.
The PCB had planned on the resumption of the PSL from June 1 but although there have been reports that the United Arab Emirates government has allowed the Emirates Cricket Board to host the matches in Abu Dhabi, the PCB hasn’t divulged any details about the programme.A PCB spokesman told Dawn that the offices of the cricket body were “open till late in the evening on Tuesday and as soon as any information is received, it will be shared with the media forthwith.”Asked about the Emirates board having received clearance from the UAE government for the PSL, the spokesman said he “could not share anything with the media until any information is received.”The PCB had earlier planned to resume the PSL season in Karachi with
a window from June 1 to 17 set aside for the 20 matches but after its request to go on with that wasn’t approved by the National Command Operation Centre, it approached the Emirates Board with the consent of all the six franchises. But still, there remain multiple hurdles with the PCB facing time constraints since the national team is due to embark on its tour of England on June 23.The UAE has banned commercial flights from South Asia, which has become the epicentre of the Covid-19 pandemic with India the hardest-hit nation. Most of the PSL’s broadcast crew is from India and they along with the players, who will fly in from all over the world, and franchise officials have to quarantine for ten days upon arrival in the UAE.
Players from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are to arrive in Pakistan to board on a chartered flight to the UAE with the PCB making the arrangements on an emergency basis which would see costs of holding the event soar. Another issue with playing in the UAE in June is the relentless heat of the Middle East summer which could affect players’ performances. As the announcement gets delayed, the PCB has a back-up plan to resume the PSL later in the first week of June but that would see two matches being played every day till June 17.The PCB also has a free window in September to hold the PSL as the national team will have completed the tour of the West Indies by August 24 before the arrival of England in October. Tareen dispels reports of split in PTI, says there’s no forward bloc
Estranged Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Tareen dispelled on Wednesday reports of a split in the ruling party, even as he maintained that PTI lawmakers from “his group” would be raising their voices in the Punjab Assembly against what he called “acts of revenge” by the provincial government.Tareen, who was addressing media persons outside the Lahore High Court (LHC), stressed that there was no forward bloc in the PTI, but admitted that the group he was part of had existed within the party for the past three months.“[But] I am openly telling you that … we all are part of the PTI and will remain so,” he asserted. Tareen, however, alleged that the Punjab government had been exacting revenge from the members of the group, using different pressure tactics such as transfers. “We have decided to raise voice against it in the Punjab Assembly and have nominated Sardar Saeed Akbar Khan Niwani to lead this discussion in the assembly as our representative,” he added. Recalling that Prime Minister Imran Khan had met the group and assured them that justice would be served and no revenge would be exacted, Tareen expressed confidence in the premier’s assurance. “But the Punjab government also needs to stop [unjustified] action against our group and address our concerns,” Tareen said, reiterating that they would raise the issue in the provincial assembly as it was their constitutional right. Tareen reiterated that there was no forward block in the PTI. Reports of a split in the ruling party surfaced after Tareen, once a close friend to Prime Minister Imran Khan, announced on Tuesday the parliamentary leaders of “his group” — both in the National and the Punjab assemblies. The announcement came at a dinner hosted by Tareen at his residence where,
according to Raja Riaz, a member of the National Assembly from Faisalabad, four more MNAs and as many MPAs had joined the group. This, Raja Riaz claimed, had brought the total strength of the group close to 40. Tareen had named Riaz the group’s parliamentary leader in the National Assembly, and Niwani in the Punjab Assembly. He accused the Punjab government of transferring officers of the ministers that were loyal to Tareen, “left, right and centre”, and were putting pressure on them. The estranged PTI leader said the pro-Tareen group had, as a result, decided to “raise their voices against this in the Punjab Assembly”. Tareen said members of his group had decided to nominate MPA Saeed Akbar Niwani to “lead the discussions” against the alleged revenge tactics of the Punjab government, in the assembly. He blamed the media for making a huge deal about the news. He urged the Punjab government to “stop with their actions”, adding that the lawmakers who are part of the Tareen group are “your MPAs and you [Buzdar] became the chief minister by their votes”.In response to a question, Tareen said the Punjab government had taken revenge from members of his group in other matters as well but he would rather not go into details of it.Source: geo.tv
