Gen Bajwa, EU official discuss key issues Unfair of Western powers to pressure Pakistan to take sides, downgrade relations with China: PM Imran . RAWALPINDI: Chief of the Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa discussed key issues with Chairman of the European Union Military Committee Gen Claudio Graziano on Tuesday, said the Inter-Services Public Relations. During a video call the two generals discussed matters of mutual interest, reg ional security situation, including recent developments in Afghanistan and enhanced bilateral cooperation with the European Union, said an ISPR press release. During the conversation, the army chief said that Pakistan valued its relations with the EU and it was earnestly looking forward to enhancing mutually beneficial and multi-domain relations based on common interests. Gen Graziano appreciated Pakistan’s role in re-

Bilawal, Qureshi engage in war of words ahead of PM Imran’s speech in NA The National Assembly session on Wednesday became heated after PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and Foreign Shah Mahmood Qureshi engaged in a fiery debate ahead of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s speech. In his speech, Bilawal said that if the government hadn’t “rigged” yesterday’s vote on the federal budget, the whole world would have seen that the prime minister did not have 172 votes. A day earlier, the National Assembly had passed the budget for the new fiscal year with majority vote amid a dismal showing by the opposition. A confident-looking Prime Minister Imran Khan had attended the proceedings for only 50 minutes and left the assembly hall even before final vote on the budget after realising that his presence was no more required in the house to ensure the presence of the treasury members who had clearly outnumbered the opposition. The prime minister had entered the assembly hall at a time when the chair had already ordered a headcount on the demand of the opposition on the motion moved by Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin to take up the finance bill for consideration and final vote. The motion was approved with 172-138 votes. During today’s session, Bilawal voiced his
protest regarding the way voting was conducted. “It is our right for them [amendments] to be heard, not for them to be rejected in one word by an unelected member.” He stated that according to parliamentary rules, when a voice vote is challenged another voice vote is conducted. “If that is also challenged, then it is your duty to count the votes,” Bilawal said, addressing National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser. He claimed that members of the National Assembly did not know what they voted for during the last part of the approval process. He said that this undermined the “legitimacy of the budget”, adding that the opposition took this process very seriously. “Is it not rigging if we can’t record our vote

TikTok ban: Fawad says ‘judicial activism’ has cost Pakistan billions of dollars Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry on Wednesday stressed the need for judicial reforms and slammed recent high court decisions banning the social media app TikTok as well as setting aside the appointment of the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) president. In a tweet, the minister said the country would never be able to come out of an economic crisis unless judicial reforms were implemented. ”My head is spinning after reading about the decision to ban TikTok and remove the NBP president. What are our courts doing? The country has already suffered losses worth billons of dollars due to judicial activism,” the minister said.
SHC bans TikTok
Earlier this week, the Sindh High Court had ordered the Pakistan Telecommu nica tion Authority (PTA) to suspend access to TikTok in the country until July 8. The court in its order stated that TikTok had not abided by “the constant undertakings and assurances” given by it before various courts and the PTA to block accounts spreading vulgarity. In March, the Peshawar High Court had imposed a similar ban on the video-sharing application. The ban was later lifted in April. In October last year, the PTA had banned TikTok for the first time over complaints re-
garding indecent and immoral content. The ban was lifted 10 days later “after assurance from management that they will block all accounts repeatedly involved in spreading obscenity and immorality”. IHC sets asides appointments Meanwhile, the Islamabad High Court on Tuesday set aside the appointments of NBP President Arif Usmani and chairman of its board of directors, Zubair Soomro. According to the petitioner, the appointments had been made in violation of the constitutional rights that ensured equal opportunity for every citizen. The bench observed that it was necessary to issue an advertisement for the appointment of the board chairman under the law. The IHC bench through a short order accepted the petition and said the appointments of NBP’s president and chairman of BoD had been made in violation of the law. Source: dawn.com
. Prime Minister Imran Khan has stressed that it is “very unfair” of the United States and Western powers to “put pressure” on countries like Pakistan to choose sides and downgrade their relationship with China. The premier said despite pressure, Pakistan would not change or downgrade its relationship with China because the relationship was “deep”.“Whatever will happen, our relationship between the two countries — no matter what pressure is put on us — is not going to change,” he stressed. The premier made the comments in an interview with English-language state broadcaster China Global Television Network (CGTN), an excerpt of which was shared on his Instagram account. When the anchorperson questioned Prime Minister Imran about the friendship between Pakistan and China in a regional context, he replied that Pakistan has “always had a very special relationship with China”.That relationship has only gotten stronger with time, the premier said, adding that Pakistan and China “always stand together” at international forums. There was a “strange, great rivalry” taking place in the region which was public knowledge, he said. “You see the United States being wary of China. The way United States and China are looking at each other creates problems because what the United States is doing is it’s formed this regional alliance called the Quad, which is US, India and a couple of other countries.”The premier said it was “very unfair” for the United States and other Western powers to pressure countries like Pakistan to take sides, questioning, “Why do we have to take sides?” “We should have good relations with everyone,” the premier insisted.
Prime Minister Imran recalled how China “always stood with us” whenever the country was in trouble politically or internationally or in a conflict with its neighbour, in an apparent reference to India. “In good times, everyone stands with you but in your difficult, tough times, bad times, you remember those people who stood by you. That’s why you will find that in Pakistan, people always have a special fondness for people in China,” he added. The premier said the relationship between Pakistan and China was not only limited to official relations but it was a “people to people relationship” as well. The premier was then asked how the ties between Pakistan and China could be deepened further to which he replied: “Number one is trade.”He termed the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as the “biggest thing happening in Pakistan” and the economic future the country was moving towards. The political relationship between Pakistan and China had gotten stronger as well because “whatever happens in any international forum, Pakistan and China stand together”, the premier said. NCOC expresses concern over rising positivity rate of Covid in GB • Govt issues guideline for Eid to minimise risk of new wave ISLAMABAD: While the number of active cases of coronavirus has dropped from over 55,000 to 32,153 within a month, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on Tuesday expressed concern over the rising positivity rate in Gilgit-Baltistan and the Ministry of National Health Services issued a guideline for animal markets in view of upcoming Eidul Azha. Animal vendors without evidence of vaccination may not be allowed to conduct business in the markets, according to the guideline. As three million more doses of Covid-19 vaccine arrived here from China, the NCOC, responding to the criticism that the government has been relying largely on donated vaccines, claimed that over 17 million of the 21.13 million doses of different types of vaccines had been purchased and the latest consignment was part of the procurement plan for June. The NCOC session was chaired by national coordinator Lt Gen Hamooduz Zaman Khan and was also attended by Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM) on Health Dr Faisal Sultan and Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Lt Gen Akhtar Nawaz Satti. The NCOC expressed concern over the rising positivity of the disease in GilgitBaltistan and emphasised stringent implementation of SOPs with regard to tourism in the northern region of the country. It said federating units had the discretion of planning summer holidays in their respective educational institutions. According to the latest NCOC data, 23 deaths and 735 more cases were reported
from across the country in a single day and the number of active cases reached 32,153. As of June 29, there were 2,201 patients hospitalised across the country and 253 of them were on ventilators.
Risk of a new wave
The Ministry of National Health Services issued a guideline in view of the upcoming Eid to prevent spread of Covid-19 cases, advising people to undertake minimal necessary travel during Eid holidays as the ‘risk of a new wave was imminent’. It stated that Covid-19 pandemic continued with emergence of more transmissible variants leading to new waves of infection. Animal markets being set up in view of the Eid must adhere to the guidelines for social distancing and other protective measures while Eidgahs, too, can accelerate spread of the virus. “Social visits at Eid and general family gettogethers should be avoided. Eid shopping should only be restricted to minimal essentials and crowding in markets should be avoided at all costs. The tradition of “Eid embracing” is contrary to standard SOPs; physical contact promotes spread of infection. Public is advised to protect themselves and their loved ones by being mindful and avoiding this practice on Eid,” it explained. The ministry advised people to prefer online

154th Canada Day this July 1st is a time to grieve those who died at residential schools, not to celebrate Canada.
C
On Thursday, July 2, 2021 anada’s 154th birthday is going to be celebrated in a virtual way again and in case if there are some events they have to follow SOPs. This Canada Day is different for all Canadians, not only for the Indigenous population. However, three grim discoveries on the grounds of former residential schools have quickly shifted the national mood Indigenous and non-Indigenous people have a question whether it’s appropriate to celebrate Canada Day or not? A number of rallies are being organized in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and Manitoba on Wednesday, July 1, in solidarity with the Indigenous community.
O
n this Day the true north remains just as strong but might not feel quite as free with Canada Day celebrations being a little quieter and physically distant as people keep their guard up against COVID-19 for more than 18 months. From coast to coast the usual festivities, parades and fireworks that accompany Canada Day have been cancelled in many communities from last year (2020) because of COVID-19, but Canadians are still finding ways to mark the country’s birthday.
There were plenty of opportunities to show off our national pride throughout the country on Canada Day. As expected, Canadians are going to mark the anniversary with more excitement. ‘Canada Day’ being a federal statutory holiday, is celebrated throughout Canada with full fervour in recognition of the “July 1, 1867 enactment” of the British North Americas Act (BNA), also called “The Constitution Act, 1867.” Historically speaking, the Canadian founders of confederation were the representatives of the British North America colonies who attended the three major conferences on Canadian confederation. Sir John A. Macdonald became the first Prime Minister of Canada on that day. Not only was he the ‘father of confederation,’ but he also drafted two-thirds of the provisions of the BNA creating the
‘Dominion of Canada.’
As a result, Canada became a self-governing dominion of Great Britain. The four provinces were created from the former British colonies of Nova Scotia,
New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario. Currently, Canada consists of ten provinces and three territories. This Canadian national holiday was enacted in 1879 under the name “Dominion Day.” In fact, the formation of the union of provinces under a new country is the basis of Canada’s July 1 celebration each year. However, the ‘Dominion Day’ changed into ‘Canada Day’ on October 27, 1982. The official lyrics “O Canada” were finalized in 1968 by a special joint committee of the Senate and House of Commons. This day also marks the anniversary of the officially proclaimed “O Canada” as national anthem. The Royal anthem plays ‘God Save The Queen’ at some festive locations celebrating Canada Day. The celebrations will be all over Canada. Virtual Surrey Canada Day 2021, presented by KPU, has announced its support in the Canada Day Drumming Virtual Celebration and its worldwide Guinness World Records attempt for the “Most People Performing a Drum Roll Online Simultaneously.” Canada Day Drumming joins
people from all cultural backgrounds across the world to come together to promote diversity and multicultural harmony. Indeed, the event serves as a good bridge to facilitate Muslims to build ties with Canadians of other faiths. Despite the insurmountable difficulty, a tolerance level among the members of multi-cultural society is a real blessing, as it has been playing a big role in promoting diversity in schools, work places, businesses and academic institutions. Of course, the credit goes to millions of motivated immigrants who kept building this nation to make Canada an attractive country to live peacefully. Every year, tens of thousands of Canadians celebrate Canada Day in grand style in the nation’s capital flocking to Parliament Hill to join with the Governor General, the Prime Minister, and the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, but since last year everone missed at Parliament Hill, Long Live Canada!

We don’t like you are Muslim, why are you wearing this dress?’“And then one guy held my hands and the other guy cut my beard.” Kashif said he was stabbed in the arm and then hit over the head with the cane he uses for walking, knocking him unconscious. He said the attackers were gone when he regained consciousness. He lost his keys and phone in the attack and tried to get help at a neighbour’s house, but they were asleep. He was eventually able to flag down someone driving by. “He asked me what happened, I told him, ‘I have a stab’ and then he called 911.”
Kashif was taken to hospital where he received 14 stitches to close a wound on his arm.He said police came to the hospital and took a statement from him. Ali Ahmad, director of social and cultural affairs of the Pakistan Canada Cultural Association of
Saskatoon, is one of the organizers. He said the walk was originally arranged in response to the June 6 attack in London, Ont., that killed four members of a Muslim family as they were out for an evening walk, but that there have since been more incidents such as the recent attack on two sisters wearing hijabs outside of Edmonton by a man wielding a knife, and now the Saskatoon incident Friday morning. “Of course I was angry and horrified [when told of Friday’s attack],” Ahmad said. “But more importantly, I was confused. I don’t want events like this happening in my city, in my home.” Ahmad said there is a fear in the community. “We need to reassure them that they are safe,” he said. “We need to create a sense of security that they can walk freely in this home, in this city they call home.” Ahmad said Saskatoon has to come up with a long-term strategy to confront these hateful acts of violence. The hajj pilgrimage and its significance in Islam
O
By ASSOCIATED PRESS ver 2 million Muslims from around the world are beginning the fiveday hajj pilgrimage Sunday. They will circle Islam’s most sacred site, the cubeshaped Kaaba in the Saudi Arabian city of Mecca, and take part in a series of rituals intended to bring about greater humility and unity among Muslims. Here’s a look at the pilgrimage and what it means for Muslims: What is the purpose of the hajj? The hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam, and all able-bodied Muslims are required to perform it once in their lifetime. The hajj is seen as a chance to wipe clean past sins and start fresh. Many seek to deepen their faith on the hajj, with some women taking on the Islamic hair covering known as “hijab” upon returning. Despite the physical challenges of the hajj, many people rely on canes or crutches and insist on walking the routes. Those who cannot afford the hajj are sometimes financed by charities or community leaders. Others save their entire lives to make the journey. A few even walk thousands of miles by foot to Saudi Arabia, taking months to arrive. What is the history of the hajj? While following a route the Prophet Muhammad once walked, the rites of hajj are believed to ultimately trace the footsteps of the prophets Ibrahim and Ismail, or Abraham and Ishmael, as they are named in the Bible. Muslims believe Ibrahim’s faith was tested when God commanded him to sacrifice his only son, Ismail. Ibrahim was prepared to submit to the command, but then God stayed his hand, sparing his son. In the Christian and Jewish versions of the story,
Abraham is ordered to kill his other son, Isaac. Pilgrims also trace the path of Ibrahim’s wife, Hagar, who Muslims believe ran between two hills seven times searching for water for her dying son. Tradition holds that God then brought forth a spring that runs to this day. That spring, known as the sacred well of Zamzam, is believed to possess healing powers, and pilgrims often return from the hajj with bottles of its water as gifts. Why is the Kaaba so important to Muslims? Islamic tradition holds that the Kaaba was built by Ibrahim and Ismail as a house of monotheistic worship thousands of years ago. Over the years, the Kaaba was reconstructed and attracted different kinds of pilgrims, including early Christians who once lived in the Arabian Peninsula. In preIslamic times, the Kaaba was used to house pagan idols worshiped by local tribes. Muslims do not worship the Kaaba, but it is Islam’s most sacred site because it represents the metaphorical house of God and the oneness of God in Islam. Observant Muslims around the world face toward the Kaaba during their five daily prayers. What are the rituals performed during the hajj?
Pilgrims enter into a state of spiritual purity known as “ihram” that is aimed at shedding symbols of materialism, giving up worldly pleasures and focusing on the inner self over outward appearance. Women forgo makeup and perfume and wear loose-fitting clothing and a head covering, while men dress in seamless, white terry cloth garments. The white garments are forbidden to contain any stitching — a restriction meant to emphasize the equality of all Muslims and prevent wealthier pilgrims from differentiating themselves with more elaborate garments. Muslims are forbidden from engaging in sexual intercourse, cutting their hair or trimming their nails while in ihram. It is also forbidden for pilgrims to argue, fight or lose their tempers during the hajj. Inevitably, though, the massive crowds and physical exhaustion of the journey test pilgrims’ patience and tolerance. The first day of hajj The hajj traditionally begins in Mecca, with a smaller “umrah” pilgrimage that can be performed year-round. To perform the umrah, Muslims circle the Kaaba counterclockwise seven times while reciting supplications to God, then walk between the two hills traveled by Hagar. Mecca’s Grand
Mosque, the world’s largest, encompasses the Kaaba and the two hills. Before heading to Mecca, many pilgrims visit the city of Medina, where the Prophet Muhammad is buried and where he built his first mosque. The second day of hajj After spending the night in the massive valley of Mina, the pilgrims head to Mt. Arafat, some 12 miles east of Mecca, for the pinnacle of the pilgrimage. They scale a hill called Jabal al-Rahma, or Mountain of Mercy. It is here where Muhammad delivered his final sermon, calling for equality and for Muslim unity. He reminded his followers of women’s rights and that every Muslim life and property is sacred. Around sunset, pilgrims head to an area called Muzdalifa, 5.5 miles west of Arafat. Many walk, while others use buses. They spend the night there and pick up pebbles along the way that will be used in a symbolic stoning of the devil back in Mina, where Muslims believe the devil tried to talk Ibrahim out of submitting to God’s will. The final three days of hajj The last three days of the hajj are marked by three events: a final circling of the Kaaba, casting stones in Mina and removing the ihram. Men often shave their heads at the end in a sign of renewal. The final days of hajj coincide with Eid alAdha, or the festival of sacrifice, celebrated by Muslims around the world to commemorate Ibrahim’s test of faith. During the three-day Eid, Muslims slaughter livestock and distribute the meat to the poor. Source: www.latimes.com Source: travelhealthpro.org.uk

What is Qurbani?
Q
urbani, or Uḍḥiya as it is known in Arabic, is the practice of sacrificing an animal for Allah (swt). Every year, on the days of Eid-ul-Adha from the 10th to 13th of Dhul Hijjah, Muslims around the world sacrifice an animal to mark the completion of Hajj. This practice commemorates the sacrifice of Ibrahim (as) thousands of years ago, who was prepared to sacrifice his beloved son
ukinsaudiarabia and guidance from local authorities. Pilgrims who are permitted to perform Umrah should be aware that proof of at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine is mandatory [4]. Residents and visitors will be required to register their details with a COVID-19 mobile app. An official Ministry of Hajj and Umrah app has been launched as part of the registration procedure to perform Umrah.
Pilgrims should check:

Lapid opens first Israeli embassy in Gulf ‘You’re on pal’: Biden accepts Trudeau’s here to stay. We call on all the countries of bet on Habs as Stanley Cup final kicks off the region to recognise that. And to come
ABU DHABI: Israel’s top diplomat Yair Lapid opened the Jewish state’s first embassy in the Gulf during a trip to the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, nine months after they signed a normalisation deal. “The opening of the Israeli Embassy in Abu Dhabi with the Emirati Minister of Culture and Youth,” he tweeted with a photo of himself and UAE minister Noura al-Kaabi cutting a ribbon in the blue and white of the Israeli flag. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken welcomed the opening as “historic”. Lapid’s visit and the opening of the first Israeli embassy in a Gulf state are “significant for Israel, the UAE, and the broader region”, he said in a statement. Israeli ministers have previously visited the UAE, but newly appointed Lapid became the most senior Israeli to make the trip, and the first on an official mission. “Israel wants peace with its neighbours. With all its neighbours. We aren’t going anywhere. The Middle East is our home. We’re
talk to us,” Lapid said during the opening ceremony.Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Lior Haiat denied Lapid was snubbed by his opposite number at the embassy opening, insisting that he would meet “five ministers in less than 30 hours”. Since their US-brokered normalisation agreement was signed last September, Israel and the UAE have signed a raft of deals ranging from tourism to aviation and financial services. During his visit, Lapid will also inaugurate a consulate in Dubai. Lapid’s trip comes nearly a year after the nations moved to normalise ties, and it follows a string of visits by Israeli officials that were planned then scrapped over issues including the Covid pandemic and diplomatic scuffles. In March, a planned official visit by Israel’s then-prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu was cancelled due to a “dispute” with Jordan over the use of its airspace, according to Israeli officials. Netanyahu, replaced as prime minister by Jewish nationalist Naftali Bennett in a coalition government cobbled together by Lapid weeks ago, had already postponed a February visit to the UAE and Bahrain over coronavirus travel restrictions. Tourism minister Orit Farkash-Hacohen, now science and technology minister, reportedly also had to cancel trips. ........... Source:dawn.com
‘US commander warns Taliban to stop Afghan offensive or face air strikes
The top US commander in Afghanistan on Tuesday did not rule out conducting air strikes against the Taliban if they pressed on with their campaign of capturing new territory across the violence-wracked country. Fighting has surged across the rugged countryside since early May when the US military began its final withdrawal of troops, with the Taliban claiming to have recently captured more than 100 of the over 400 districts across Afghanistan. “What I like to see is no air strikes, but to get to no air strikes, you stop all violence,” General Scott Miller told reporters in Kabul on Tuesday, according to video footage obtained by AFP from US-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.“The best way to stop those, and I have actually told the Taliban this, is stop the offensive operations and air strikes,” he said, insisting that the US military still has the fire power to conduct air strikes against the insurgents even as it continues the withdrawal. The remaining US troops are expected to be out by the September 11 deadline announced by President Joe Biden to end America’s longest war. The Taliban’s claims of capturing districts are often disputed by government officials and are dif-
ficult to independently verify. But experts say one of the main reasons the Taliban has been able to capture scores of new districts in recent weeks is the lack of US air support to Afghan ground forces fighting across rural terrains. Miller, who is soon to transition to another commander, acknowledged that any loss of territory has an impact on the overall security in the country.Because districts start representing key terrain as it relates to security of the people, of the provincial capitals and certainly security of the capital,” he said. The Taliban recently captured a key border crossing with Tajikistan in the north along with other districts surrounding the city of Kunduz, effectively laying a siege to the city. North Korea’s Kim fumes about ‘grave lapses’ in pandemic defences North Korean leader Kim Jong Un chastised top governing party officials for failures in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic that led to an unspecified “grave incident” and put the safety of the country and people at risk, state media reported on Wednesday. The report by state news agency KCNA did not elaborate on what happened, or how it put people at risk, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency said. “By neglecting important decisions of the party in its national emergency antivirus fight in preparations for a global health crisis, officials in charge have caused a grave incident that poses a huge crisis to the safety of the nation and its people,” Kim was quoted by Yonhap as saying. “A major factor that hampers the execution of important tasks is inability and irresponsibility of senior officials,” he added.
“Party-wide fight should be carried out against ideological defects and all kinds of negative factors found among senior officials.”North Korea has not officially con-
firmed any cases of the coronavirus, a claim questioned by South Korean and US officials. Source: aljazeera.com
... OTTAWA -- With a possible election on the horizon, Justin Trudeau appears ready to roll the dice -- on hockey. The prime minister challenged the U.S. president to a bet Monday as the Montreal Canadiens square off against the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Stanley Cup final -- a gamble Joe Biden readily accepted. “Two of the best teams in the NHL are facing off right now ΓǪ how about a friendly wager?” Trudeau proffered to the commanderin-chief in a Twitter post at around 9 p.m., tacking on a “.GoHabsGo” for good measure . Biden replied three minutes later: “You’re on pal. .GoBolts.” The stakes of the bet were not clear, but Trudeau suggested they may be sandwichbased, saying in French during a virtual chat with the head of Quebec’s chamber of commerce Tuesday that he has “every confidence that I won’t have to buy a few pounds of smoked meat to send him.” Patrick Brazeau, an Algonquin senator from Quebec, weighed in shortly after Biden’s reply with a tweet addressed to the president. “The last time he offered me a ‘friendly wager,’ I lost and he snipped my hair. .GoHabsGo,” Brazeau said of Trudeau, posting a photo of the haircut. He was referring to a charity boxing match between the two parliamentarians in 2012, when Trudeau, then still a year away from winning the Liberal leadership, proposed that the winner cut the loser’s locks.
Trudeau told reporters ahead of the bout that Brazeau had “resisted back a little bit, pointing out that hair has a cultural significance for First Nations peoples, and I said, ‘I know, that’s why I proposed it: When a warrior cuts his hair, it’s a sign of shame, so it’s very apropos.”’ Trudeau’s comments drew criticism from Indigenous advocates who saw his remarks as demeaning and inconsistent with reconciliation. In 2019, Brazeau posted that “to his credit @JustinTrudeau wanted to just cut 5mm of my hair after a phone call the day after the fight. I wanted him to cut the entire thing but he said no! I cut a foot more of hair to donate to .cancer research.” The odds have shifted since Trudeau’s lateevening tweet -- posted with the Canadiens already down by at least a goal -- after the Lightning dominated Montreal to win 5-1 in the first game of the series Monday night. During the Sochi Olympics in 2014, thenpresident Barack Obama wound up owing former prime minister Stephen Harper two cases of beer when the Canadian women’s and men’s hockey teams triumphed over their American counterparts. After the Washington Capitals glided over the Ottawa Senators in the Eastern Conference semifinals in 1998, a humbled prime minister Jean Chretien paid off a bet to Bill Clinton during the G8 economic summit, donning a Capitals jersey presented to him by the U.S. president. .Source:.ctvnews.ca
Senate set to rise without passing broadcasting, conversion therapy bills OTTAWA -- The Senate is set to adjourn for its summer break by midnight on Tuesday, and despite the federal government pushing to see all of their priority pieces of legislation pass, two key bills are set to stall out as senators say they merit more fulsome study. Bill C-12, which will put into law Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions targets, passed its third and final reading on Tuesday afternoon, and Bill C-30, which implements the 2021 budget commitments, including pandemic aid extensions, followed suit Tuesday night. Both had received a “pre-study” in which senators were able to assess the legislative proposals, in general, before the document was actually before them. However, still some senators raised concerns about feeling as if the federal government was asking them to “rubber stamp” wide-spanning bills in a short timeframe. Though two other bills are likely to be left in limbo and potentially left to die if an election is called in the coming months: Bill C-6, which seeks to restrict the harmful practice of conversion therapy for LGBTQ2S+ folks, and Bill C-10, the controversial Broadcasting Act changes. Both passed into the Senate at the eleventh hour of the House of Commons sitting last week, and despite some initial debate, two pieces of legislation are unlikely to make it further than entering the committee study stage before senators rise or log off from their hybrid sitting for the summer. After sitting late into the night on Monday,
the Senate passed Bill C-6 from second reading into the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee where a study is to be conducted before it could advance further. Bill C-10 passed into committee on Tuesday afternoon, putting it in the hands of the senators who make up the Senate Transport and Communications Committee to decide how to proceed. The Senate could sit late into the night on Tuesday and it’s possible a last-minute deal could be reached, though in absence of continued work over the coming weeks, both bills are set to languish in the upper chamber. This makes their fate subject to a much-speculated late summer or early fall election call. Any bills left in either the House or Senate that have not passed when a Parliament is dissolved, die. They would have to be re-tabled and work their way through all legislative stages again before becoming law. Source: cbc.ca/news

I am very proud that I am a Muslim and Pakistani Canadian and it is my duty to remind everyone that due to recent attacks of Islamophobia and terrorism in Canada, be careful and take care of each other in the community. This July 1st is a time to grieve those who died at residential schools, not to celebrate Canada.

A BIT OF HISTORY
The first recorded Islamic presence in Canada was the 1871 census which found 13 Muslims among the population. The first Canadian Mosque was constructed in Edmonton in 1938, when there were only about 700 Muslims in the country. The famous translator of the Quran, Abdullah Yusuf Ali inaugurated the masjid during his tour of Canada while he was working on his translation The years after World War II saw a swift increase in the Muslim population, in the 1981 census the population was still below a hundred thousand

as the British do about football; it’s almost a matter of life or death. It is thought the first game was played in Montreal back in the 1870s and since 1893, the pinnacle is winning the Stanley Cup. It’s the oldest sports’ trophy in North America – named after Lord Stanley of Preston – and is now the championship trophy awarded to the playoff winner in the National Hockey League. Canada’s major cities are home to some of the most famous teams including the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Calgary Flames, the Montreal Canadiens and the Vancouver Canucks. A visit to any city with a sports bar during a hockey season is a must if you can’t get to the game itself, but newcomers might need a rundown of the explanation of the rules; it’s definitely not cricket.
Let’s face it, Canada is beautiful; and famously so. From the thundering waters of Niagara Falls – possibly the most famous waterfall in the world – to the rugged peaks of the Canadian Rockies, there is natural beauty in every part of Canada. Vancouver City Hall, Burrard Bridge to glow orange this Canada Day
VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – In an effort to acknowledge this country’s troubled history and ongoing treatment of Indigenous peoples, the City of Vancouver says it plans to light up city hall and the Burrard Street Bridge in Orange this Canada Day. The City says it’s being done to commemorate the children found buried on the site of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School, writing in a tweet, “We understand these children are among many missing children who went to residential schools and whose unmarked graves are now being found.” The announcement also comes as anoth-
er discovery was confirmed, this time at a former residential school in Saskatchewan where more than 700 unmarked graves were reported. The city says, generally, its social media accounts highlight various places or events that make Vancouver a great, special place to live. But this year, it is choosing to recognize “Indigenous Peoples, the impact of colonization on those Nations and the steps that need to be taken to reconcile those harms.” Canada Day has become a controversial topic in Canada in 2021, as Canadians come face to face with the dark history surrounding the country’s treatment of
Indigenous people, highlighted by the grim discovery of 215 children’s remains at the site of a former residential school in Kamloops. The hashtag “Cancel Canada Day” has been making the rounds on social media, and some municipalities, including Penticton, Kelowna, Port Hardy, and Victoria, have already cancelled celebrations ahead of July 1. There have also been calls to cancel Canada Day celebrations in Vancouver. However, Councillor Sarah Kirby-Yung says city hall doesn’t have the power to do that, because Vancouver doesn’t have any civic-led celebrations. Source: citynews1130.com

Metro Vancouver heatwave leaves Mexico Afghanistan: Taliban fighters City, Hawaii, and other hotspots in the dust launch attack on Ghazni
VANCOUVER -- The sun destinations Canadians normally associate with warm weather, and flock to in the winter to escape the cold, were not nearly as hot as most B.C. towns and cities on Monday. The high in Metro Vancouver ranged from 32 C to 42 C on what has been the hottest day of the heatwave so far. In comparison, Mexico City reached a high of only 20 C, well below the heat experienced in Canada‘s western most province.Closer to
the equator, and still in the northern hemisphere, San Jose, Costa Rica and Bogota, Colombia also fell behind at 26 C and 19 C respectively. B.C. cities also eclipsed cities in Spain, including the capital Madrid which registered a high of 28 C on Monday. Other favourite vacation hotspots like Cuba, Florida, Louisiana, registered lower temperatures than Metro Vancouver. Maui, one of the most popular winter destinations for Canadians was also cooler at 30 C. Source: vancouverisland.ctvnews.ca
Taliban fighters have launched an attack on Ghazni, clashing with Afghan forces and using explosives in an attempt to seize the central Afghan city, local officials have said. Tuesday’s assault on Ghazni, on the highway linking the capital Kabul with the southern province of Kandahar, ramps up the Taliban’s offensive against the government and comes as foreign troops prepare to exit from the war-torn country in less than three months. While senior Afghan officials confirmed the Taliban’s offensive, they also said that Afghan forces were trying to regain control of lost ground. The Taliban have had a strong presence in the province of Ghazni for years, but provincial police officials said the overnight attack from several directions was the fiercest launched by the armed group. Clashes intensified near security checkpoints in the Shaikh Ajal and Ganj area of Ghazni city, forcing shopkeepers to shut the main market. “The situation in Ghazni is changing, most of the lost areas in the outskirts are being taken back by the Afghan forces,” said Abdul Jami, a provincial council member in Ghazni.Roads into the area were closed and telecoms interrupted making it hard for aid
groups and officials to assess the number of casualties. As Afghan forces battled the Taliban in Ghazni and other parts of the country, officials said some civilians were actively joining the battle against the group. Ajmal Omar Shinwari, a spokesman for the Afghan defence and security forces, said Afghans keen to take up arms against the Taliban are being absorbed in the structure of territorial army forces.“First they will be trained then they will be deployed to the battlefield along with other Afghan security forces,” said Shinwari in capital city Kabul. Violence surged after the United States and NATO military began the withdrawal of their last remaining troops to meet a September 11 deadline announced by President Joe Biden to end the US’s longest war. Accounting for almost 40 percent of all coronavirus deaths in Africa, the country is struggling to cope with growing coronavirus cases driven by the Delta variant. Cape Town, South Africa – From his 10bed private clinic in western Johannesburg, Bayanda Gumende is more used to treating renal diseases than COVID-19. But with the city’s hospitals full, patients lingering in casualty wards for days and ambulances stuck waiting in car parks, that is beginning to change. The 27-year-old chief nephrology technologist says he has been swamped with calls from patients desperate for oxygen and who cannot find it elsewhere. But with supply being limited, he is forced to prioritise. “It has taken a toll on me. It is very emotional to watch people taking their last breath. Some people are gasping for air. There is literally nothing you can do about it. You cannot save everybody,” he says. South Africa accounts for close to 40 per-
cent of all COVID-19 deaths on the continent, with 60,038 officially recorded fatalities so far. It is currently in the midst of a third wave, driven by the rapid spread of the Delta variant, first detected in India, which is fast becoming the dominant strain. Professor Salim Abdool Karim, a worldleading epidemiologist and former co-chair of South Africa’s Ministerial Advisory Committee on COVID-19, believes that a mutation related to furin – an enzyme that “cleaves” the spike protein – makes this variant particularly dangerous....... ‘Never seen anything like this’: At least 134 sudden South Africa’s third COVID wave could be the worst yet deaths reported in Metro Vancouver, most related to heat
VANCOUVER -- Police in Metro Vancouver say there were dozens of reports of sudden deaths in just a few days in three major cities, with heat expected to be a factor in many.Police in Vancouver have seen the highest number of calls. In a news release Tuesday, a police department spokesperson said the city has seen 65 sudden deaths since the heat wave began on Friday.“Today alone, officers had responded to 20 sudden deaths as of 1:45 p.m. with more than a dozen others waiting for police to be dispatched,” Sgt. Steve Addison said. ”The vast majority of these cases are related to the heat. We’ve never seen anything like this, and it breaks our heart.” Similarly, the Burnaby RCMP said they received 25 calls during a record-breaking heat wave. The temperature is believed to be a contributing factor in the majority of the deaths, they said in a statement Tuesday. Cpl. Mike Kalanj said many of those who died were seniors. “Our members are finding that when they’re going to these calls, these apartments are over 30 degrees,” he said. “Not everyone has working air conditioning, and these are the people we need to make sure we’re checking up on, several times a day if you can.” In an update later, Mounties said 15 sudden death calls were made the day before, and that 19 had been made so far on Tuesday. The latest information brings the total to 34 calls made in the city over two days. Surrey RCMP told CTV News there has also been a higher than average number of sudden deaths in their city since the beginning of the extreme heat wave.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Mounties said they have responded to 13 deaths so far, preceded by 22 on Monday. Constable Sarbjit Sangha added while the coroner has not confirmed the cause of death in these cases, a majority are older people. “The large number of these sudden deaths involve seniors between the ages of 92 to 70,” she said. “The youngest person that we had is a 44 year old.” In a news release, BC’s Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe said since late last week, there has been a significant increase in deaths reported where extreme heat is a suspected factor. “The Coroners Service would normally receive approximately 130 reports of death over a four-day period. From Friday, June 25 through 3 p.m. on Monday, June 28, at least 233 deaths were reported,” she said. “This number will increase as data continues to be updated.” Premier John Horgan was asked if the province did enough to get the word out about the potentially dangerous temperatures.“The public was acutely aware that we had a heat problem, and we were doing our best to try to break through all of the other noise to encourage people to take steps to protect themselves,” he said. “But it was apparent to everyone who walked out doors that we were in an unprecedented heat wave, and again, there’s a level of personal responsibility.” The Vancouver Police department said officers are being redeployed from other sections and called in from home to try and deal with the call backlog, but warned it could take days to return to normal. .Source:.bc.ctvnews.ca
Hezbollah leader, Hamas chief discuss recent Gaza fighting
Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh meets Hezbollah’s Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut for talks on Israel’s 11-day bombardment of Gaza. The top leaders of the groups Hezbollah and Hamas held talks in the Lebanese capital Beirut on Tuesday about last month’s 11-day Israeli bombardment of the besieged Gaza Strip. Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas, the Palestinian group that governs Gaza, arrived in Lebanon on Sunday and met several top officials, including President Michel Aoun and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri.. On Tuesday, Haniyeh and Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah discussed how they can build on the experience of the latest round of violence. The Israeli bombardment killed at least 256 Palestinians, including 66 children. Thirteen people were killed in Israel, including two children. The two sides stressed “the depth of the existing relationship between Hezbollah and Hamas, and its key role … in this decisive battle”, Turkish state news agency Anadolu
reported, citing a Hezbollah statement. In a speech after the meeting, Haniyeh stressed the importance of the right of return for Palestinian refugees and their descendants and the rejection of resettlement or an “alternative homeland”. He said the Palestinians who reside in Lebanon are “guests” until they can return to their homeland, and that they contribute to Lebanon’s “stability and security”. Haniyeh noted that “Jerusalem remains the focus of the conflict with the occupation and the resistance is the strategic choice for liberation.”.....Source: aljazeera.com

As well we have seen a decline in hospitalization and deaths.” Henry said this means B.C. will end its record-breaking state of emergency due to COVID-19 on June 30 at 11:59 p.m. “British Columbians have stepped up every step of the way during this pandemic,” Horgan said. “I’m so proud, so proud to be a British Columbian based on how all of us have responded over the past 16 months.”
In Step 2, limits to outdoor personal gatherings increased to 50 people but the cap on indoor personal gatherings remained at five. Under Step 3, indoor and outdoor personal gatherings will “return to normal.” “We know that these are situations where these are people that we know … we know the risk, we know the vaccination status, we can invite people into our home based on our risk and the risk of those around us,” Henry explained. “It is up to us to decide who we have in our home now.” Henry reiterated that “everyone needs to move at their own pace.”
However, residents will need to check with other provinces’ rules and guidelines on visitors before travelling. Henry said people should also still be cautious until they’re fully vaccinated. “Not every community is ready yet to receive visitors, but many, many are,” she said.

By Sarah Moon, Jon Passantino and Rebekah Riess, CNN Updated 9:59 AM ET, Wed June 30, 2021 (CNN)More than 230 deaths have been reported in British Columbia since Friday as a historic heat wave brought record-high temperatures, officials said Tuesday. The province’s chief coroner called it an “unprecedented time.” “Since the onset of the heat wave late last week, the BC Coroners Service has experienced a significant increase in deaths reported where it is suspected that extreme heat has been contributory,” Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe said in a statement. The coroner’s service normally receives about 130 death reports over a four-day period. From Friday through Monday, at least 233 deaths were reported, the chief coroner said, adding “this number will increase as data continues to be updated.” Coroners are now gathering information to determine the cause and manner of deaths and whether heat played a role, the statement said. ”Environmental heat exposure
can lead to severe or fatal results, particularly in older people, infants and young children and those with chronic illnesses,” the statement added. Authorities earlier in the day reported a spike in sudden deaths for Vancouver and nearby Burnaby and Surrey. Officers have responded to more than 65 sudden deaths since the heat wave began on Friday, Vancouver police said. “Today alone, officers had responded to 20 sudden deaths as of 1:45 p.m., with more than a dozen others waiting for police to be dispatched,” the department said in a statement Heat-related deaths have depleted front-line resources and severely delayed response times, officials said.“We’ve never experienced anything like this heat in Vancouver,” media relations Officer Sgt. Steve Addison said during a press conference. Readings in downtown Vancouver were 98.6 degrees on Saturday, 99.5 on Sunday and 101.5 on Monday. ‘It is imperative we check on one another’
Royal Canadian Mounted Police have responded to 35 sudden deaths in nearby Surrey since Monday, media relations officer Cst. Sarbjit K. Sangha told CNN. “While the causes of death has not yet been determined in each of these cases, we can confirm that Surrey RCMP is responding to a higher than usual number of deaths since the beginning of the extreme weather conditions,” Sangha said. In the city of Burnaby, police responded to more than 34 sudden death calls since Monday, with heat believed to be a contributing factor in the majority of the deaths, according to a release from RCMP. “We are seeing this weather can be deadly for vulnerable members of our community, especially the elderly and those with underlying health issues. It is imperative we check on one another during this extreme heat,”
Adrian Dix spoke Tuesday in a Zoom meeting hosted by the Surrey Board of Trade concerning the new hospital. Provincial Health Minister Adrian Dix says he expects construction on Surrey’s second hospital, to be built in Cloverdale, to begin in 2023 with the hospital opening in 2027. Dix spoke Tuesday in a Zoom meeting hosted by the Surrey Board of Trade concerning the new “state of the art” hospital. Surrey’s second hospital, after Surrey Memorial Hospital in Whalley, is to be built next
to Kwantlen Polytechnic University at 5500 180th St. Premier John Horgan and Dix made the announcement in December 2019 he new hospital is expected to cost $1.66 billion. “That is the largest provincial contribution to a health care project in the history of British Columbia,” Dix said. “We will soon be going through the tendering process.” The new hospital is expected to have an emergency department, inpatient beds, outpatient services, operating rooms and laboratory and diagnostic services as well as a
cancer centre. “The opportunity to build a new hospital and fully integrate a cancer centre was not something that we could miss out on,” Dix said. “You’ll see a cancer centre that meets the demands of the future of the community in Surrey and will make an enormous difference.” Dix didn’t say how many beds this new hospital will have. VANCOUVER -- More COVID-19 restrictions are lifting in B.C. this week as the province moves to Step 3 of its restart plan, health officials announced Tuesday. The changes come into effect on Thursday, July 1, Premier John Horgan said in a news conference alongside Dr. Bonnie Henry and multiple cabinet ministers. Henry previously said 70 per cent of B.C. adults must be at least partially vaccinated and case counts must be “low” for the province to enter the third step of its recovery plan. As of Tuesday, 80 per cent had received one dose. ”We are making very encouraging, positive progress in our COVID-19
Here’s what Step 3 includes: Masks
In Step 3, masks in indoor public spaces will be recommended for those who aren’t fully vaccinated but no longer mandated by health order. Some businesses and other public spaces may still require them, however. “Some people may also continue to choose to wear masks and that’s OK,” Henry said. “We need to remember that we all need to go on our own pace and there are some reasons why we may feel more at risk or it may be important for us to continue to protect ourselves using masks.”

Officer suspended for inappropriate relationship dropped as Sajjan’s assistant OTTAWA -- A reserve military officer who was ordered suspended from the Vancouver police three years ago for an inappropriate relationship with a subordinate is no longer working for Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan. Department spokesman Dan Le Bouthillier said in an email Friday that Maj. Greg McCullough is no longer employed as a military assistant to the minister of national defence. McCullough was hired in March 2020 to support Sajjan’s work in Vancouver despite an external investigation that found him
guilty in 2018 of two counts of misconduct for his relationship with Const. Nicole Chan, who later took her own life in January 2019. Le Bouthillier said McCullough is now working with the Army Reserve in Vancouver on other duties. Sajjan’s office has said the two men served together in the same army reserve unit in B.C., but that the military was responsible for hiring him to the unique position and neither the minister nor his staff knew about McCullough’s past.
Sajjan has faced opposition calls to resign for his handling of sexual misconduct allegations involving senior commanders. The prime minister has insisted that Sajjan, who has served as Trudeau’s only defence minister since the Liberals first took office in late 2015, is the right person to lead the charge when it comes to changing the military’s culture and eradicating sexual misconduct and hate.McCullough has told The Canadian Press that Sajjan played no part in his hiring process. Virtual Canada Day plans to go ahead with Indigenous involvement: heritage minister
OTTAWA -- Canadian Heritage Minister Steven Guilbeault says the department’s virtual Canada Day plans will go ahead despite calls to cancel celebrations altogether in light of the recent discoveries of unmarked graves at former residential schools. In a press conference Tuesday, Guilbeault said the July 1 event, held online for a second year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will host Indigenous artists and musicians and will be a time for “dialogue.” “We think that this is, and we have started using it as an important moment for dialogue and conversation, we are featuring Indigenous artists and musicians in ways we’ve never seen before for a Canada Day event,” he told reporters He said it’s up to individual communities whether they choose to cancel fireworks or other events on the holiday.
In a follow-up statement to CTVNews.ca, a spokesperson for the department said the national evening program will begin by showcasing Indigenous culture and a “solemn moment of reflection.” Some Indigenous and human rights activists argue Canada Day should instead be recognized as a national day of mourning after remains were found at the former Kamloops, B.C. residential school and the Marieval Indian Residential School in Saskatchewan. Last week, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said it should be a moment of “reflection” of past wrongdoings and also the country’s steps to reconciliation. “Many, many Canadians will be reflecting on reconciliation, on our relationship with Indigenous Peoples and how it has evolved and how it needs to continue to evolve rap-
idly. We have so many things we need to work on together and I think this Canada Day, it will be a time of reflection on what we’ve achieved as a country but on what more we have to do,” he said speaking to reporters on Friday. Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole has been vocal about his opposition to cancelling Canada Day and said that both reflection and celebration can take place at the same time. “When you cancel an event that celebrates our country, you lose the opportunity to not only celebrate the great aspects of our country, and the opportunity to challenge the citizens of your community, of your province, or the country in general to do better in the future,” he said on Tuesday. “If events don’t take place, you can’t celebrate and you cannot rededicate your efforts for
this country. It’s time to build our country up to, to address reconciliation, to address inequalities, not by canceling celebrations or tearing Canada down but recommitting to the principles at the core of this country.” Asked how he intends to spend Canada Day, O’Toole said he’ll be in his Ontario riding meeting with constituents. ...Source: cbc.ca/news
National holiday on Thursday comes after hundreds of Indigenous children’s remains found at residential school sites. Warning: The story below contains details of residential schools that may be upsetting. Canada’s Indian Residential School Survivors and Family Crisis Line is available 24 hours a day at 1-866-925-4419.
“Nothing to celebrate.” That is the message from many Indigenous people across Canada, which is marking its national Canada Day holiday on Thursday only weeks after hundreds of Indigenous children’s remains were discovered in unmarked graves. The remains were discovered in preliminary searches at the sites of former “residential schools” – forced-assimilation institutions at which Indigenous children were subjected to physical and sexual violence, psychological harm, starvation, and other forms of abuse. In the days leading up to Canada Day, Indigenous community leaders and advocates have urged people to cancel any celebrations. Instead, they are asking for the day to be one to reflect on the real history of Canada and to support Indigenous people. “We need to recognize there is nothing to celebrate about this country right now, especially considering the empty words and inaction of the @JustinTrudeau government.
It’s a day where we can mobilize to figure out how we can make this country one that IS worth celebrating,” Indigenous novelist David A Robertson wrote on Twitter. The Oshkaatisak Council of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation, which represents dozens of First Nations across northern Ontario, said it would not acknowledge Canada Day and instead plans to “wear orange and spread awareness about the shameful history of Indian Residential Schools and the devastating legacy that continues today”. “As a nation of Indigenous Peoples, we must stand strong and shout this out to the rest of Canada. This country’s true history is finally being revealed, and it’s time to stand together and demand justice and accountability,” Oshkaatisak Council member Mallory Solomon, of Constance Lake First Nation, said in a statement on Tuesday. Several Canadian cities have scrapped their Canada Day celebrations in response to the
recent discoveries of 215 Indigenous children’s remains at Kamloops Indian Residential School in the province of British Columbia (BC) and as many as 751 unmarked graves at Marieval Indian Residential School in Saskatchewan. Chief Jennifer Bone of Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, in the central province of Manitoba, also said in June that the community believes 104 potential graves exist in three cemeteries at the site of the Brandon Residential School, which was open from 1895 to 1972. Canada’s residential school system operated from the late 1800s until the 1990s. It was part of a wider colonial project that aimed to take over Indigenous lands and forcibly assimilate First Nation, Metis and Inuit children into mainstream Canadian society. Various churches, including most notably the Roman Catholic Church, ran at least 139 residential schools across Canada. Source: aljazeera.com

Sask. First Nation announces discovery of 751 unmarked graves near former residential school

Cowessess Chief Cadmus He said it was not immediately clear if all of tressing details. The Cowessess First Nation announced a preliminary finding Thursday of 751 unmarked graves at a cemetery near the former Marieval Indian Residential School. The Marieval Indian Residential School operated from 1899 to 1997 in the area where Cowessess is now located, about 140 kilometres east of Regina. Children from First Nations in southeast Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba were sent to the school. The First Nation took over the school’s cemetery from the Catholic Church in the 1970s. Earlier this month Cowessess started using ground-penetrating radar to locate unmarked graves. It was not immediately
Delorme spoke at a virtual news conference Thursday morning. “This is not a mass grave site. These are unmarked graves,” Delorme said. Delorme said there may have at one point been markers for the graves. He said the Roman Catholic church, which oversaw the cemetery, may have removed markers at some point in the 1960s. the unmarked graves belonged to children, but that there were oral stories within Cowessess First Nation about both children and adults being there. Delorme said some 44,000 square metres of area were searched by technical teams from Saskatchewan Polytechnic, which the First Nation partnered with for the search. Teams were unable to confirm if there were more remains, but said there were 751 “recorded hits” at the site and noted there could be more than one set of remains at each “hit.” He said the penetrating radar work has a 10
to 15 per cent error rate. Technical teams would be able to provide a verified number in the coming weeks, Delorme said. Thursday’s announcement marked “Phase 1” of the First Nation’s search efforts, he said. The community would continue search efforts in the area based on oral history.. ........................Source: cbc.ca/news
HoO’Toole accuses activists of ‘tearing down’ Canada after towns cancel Canada Day events
‘ I can’t stay silent when people want to cancel Canada Day,’ Conservative leader says Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole said today he’s troubled by the cancellation of Canada Day celebrations in some municipalities and accused “a small group of activist voices” of continually talking down the country rather
than acknowledging its many successes. In a speech at the final Conservative caucus meeting before the House of Commons goes on its summer break, O’Toole said that while Canada’s history is littered with injustice and wrongdoing, that doesn’t justify cancelling the nation’s birthday — a time to give thanks for “living in the greatest country in the world.” O’Toole said the recent Kamloops residential school discovery is “very troubling” and “dreadful.” He called it evidence of the “grave injustices” committed against Indig-
enous peoples. But the reported discovery of these remains shouldn’t lead cities like Victoria, Penticton, B.C. and La Ronge, Sask. to do away with July 1 festivities altogether, O’Toole said. ”I can’t stay silent when people want to cancel Canada Day. I’m very proud to be Canadian and I know most people are as well,” he said. “We are not a perfect country. No country is. There is no place on this planet whose history can withstand close scrutiny. But there is a difference between acknowledging where we’ve fallen short and always tearing
the country down.” He said July 1 should be a day when citizens “rededicate” themselves to Canada and “tackle the challenges and inequalities that our country faces. It’s time to build Canada up.”O’Toole sought to link the municipal cancellations to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He accused the Liberal government of standing by silently while some cities do away with planned celebrations. “Who is asking Canadians whether they want Canada Day to be cancelled?” O’Toole said. By: Asma Shums, ancouver has been hit with scorching temperatures this week and we’ve all been struggling to cope with the sudden change in the weather. Not only is it impossible to sleep at night, but we’re also struggling to focus while working from home, away from the usual air con of our offices. There are some simple tricks you can try in a bid to stay cool and hydrated, however. Here are the best foods to add to your shopping list: 1) Tomatoes are high in the antioxidant lycopene, known as a potent cancer preventer. Red tomatoes are 94 per cent water while the green variety is about 93 per cent H20. Delicious in a salad or perfect in a sandwich, it is easy to slot this fruit into your daily meals. 2) Dark leafy greens are composed of 80 –

Heat wave hits Vancouver 95 percent water, which makes them very easy to digest. This means they go through the digestive system quickly, giving a cooling sensation in the body. 3) Cool melon quenches even the most intense thirst and the fruit is abundant throughout the summer months. A simple slice offers a superb, refreshing experience. Melon is low in calories and high in water content (95 per cent), making it an extremely cooling bite to eat. 4) Although it is not true that celery is a zero-calorie food, this veggie is a whopping 95 per cent water. Plus, a cup of chopped celery has only 16 calories! If you have to be outside during a heat wave, it’s imperative to drink up, even if you’re not thirsty. Avoid sugary drinks; these will actually make you lose more fluids. You also want to stick to drinks that aren’t super cold. If going outdoors, use cool spaces consider-
ately, keep your distance in line with social distancing guidelines. Avoid being outside during the hottest part of the day (typically between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.). Dress for the heat and for your activity level: Wear light, loose clothing to let air circulate and heat escape. Always wear a hat and apply sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher before going outside. Slow down your activities as it gets hotter. Move indoors and don’t work, exercise, or play outside for an extended period of time. Take frequent breaks in a cool or shady area and use a buddy system if you need to be outside when it’s hot. Check on your pets and animals frequently – make sure their needs for water and shade are met. Eat well and enjoy the weather till the snow sets in :) Email info at: asmashums@gmail.com

Anti-Palestinian, Anti-Immigrant Incident Targeting Muslim Family at The Wheatley School Graduation Civil Rights Group Demands Public Apology, Investigation, and Calls for Public Support of Targeted Student (NEW YORK, NY, 6/22/2021) — The New York chapter of the Council on AmericanIslamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today demanded that school officials publicly apologize and take corrective action following an Islamophobic, anti-Palestinian and antiimmigrant incident at The Wheatley School graduation in which a Muslim graduate speaker was reportedly booed and told “go back to Pakistan” by a parent. CAIR-NY is also calling on The Wheatley School to publicly apologize to the student and her family for providing false information to parents and the public, and for contributing to the bullying and harassment of the student. On June 20, a graduating 17-year-old Muslim student who wears hijab (religious head covering) and is of Pakistani descent, gave a graduation speech that was approved by the school principal. In the speech, the student asked her classmates to seek out knowledge about international issues plaguing the world, including the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians and Uighur Muslims and global warming. The student said: “Educate yourself about international dilemmas, including the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians and Uighur Muslims. Families are continuously torn apart and real human lives are being lost but ignored. Educate yourself on the widespread issues that plague our planet and threaten our very existence in the long run: consider global warming with the gravity that it needs to be looked at with. And never stop speaking about these issues
until they are resolved.” During her speech, the student was booed by parents and the parents chanted, “we support Israel.” Afterwards, parents harassed and bullied the student and her family. At one point, one parent is caught on video asking the student, “what about Hamas?” Another parent made the anti-immigrant statement, “go back to Pakistan!” The student and her family are of Pakistani descent. The student referenced her ethnicity during her speech. Another male adult parent became so aggressive with his yelling and gestures that security and a police detective had to escort him away from the family. The principal blamed the uproar on the student’s reference to Palestinians. At the graduation ceremony, the principal apologized to the student and stated that “the blame is all mine” because he allegedly failed to review the speech before he approved it. Later that day, however, The Wheatley School sent two emails to parents. In both emails, the school falsely stated that the student’s speech was not approved, and that the student diverted from her approved speech. In Principal Dr. Feeney’s email, he falsely stated: “Unfortunately, one of the student speakers diverted from the remarks that had been originally approved by the Graduation Speech Committee who made the selections, presenting personal views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. “I want to be clear that the injection of such remarks was absolutely inappropriate to the graduation ceremony, as would be any political statements during a celebration solely intended to acknowledge our seniors and their many achievements and accomplishments as members of our Wheatley School
community. The comments were not part of the approved speech. I apologize that such a wonderful ceremony became marred for many people in attendance due to those remarks.” The principal and school district apologized to the Wheatley Community for the student’s remark and failed to acknowledge the Islamophobia, anti-Palestinian, and antiimmigrant harassment and bullying that the student and her family suffered. The principal and school district’s emails fanned the flames of anti-Muslim hysteria and contributed to the ongoing hate that is permeating. On June 22, CAIR-NY and the family met with Principal Dr. Feeney and other school staff. Dr. Feeney described the parents conduct as being “beyond the pale” and acknowledged his failure for not “holding the adults to task” for their harassment and bullying. Dr. Feeney also acknowledged that he should have included a condemnation of parents’ conduct in the email. Dr. Feeney was asked to correct the record and issue a condemnation. Dr. Feeney refused to commit to any public comments. In a statement, CAIR-NY Legal Director Ahmed Mohamed said: “It is shocking to see the East Williston School District, The Wheatley School and Principal Dr. Feeney abdicated their fundamental duty to provide a safe and supportive environment for all students and families, including Huda and other Muslims. “Instead of supporting the student, they made false and defamatory statements about the student and failed to address the harassment and bullying the student and her family received at graduation and continue to receive. “The Islamophobia, anti-immigrant
Ethnic Cleansing In Palestine – What’s Going On
and anti-Palestinian sentiment at the school district and The Wheatley School is appalling and must be addressed for the safety of Muslim and immigrant students. We expect the school district, The Wheatley School, and Dr. Feeney to issue a public apology to the student and her family and to publicly state that they will protect the student from harassment if she attends any school activities. “The student and her family faced Islamophobic and anti-immigrant hate from parents at the graduation ceremony. The school district and school must condemn these actions, immediately investigate and hold these parents accountable for harassing and bullying a student and her family at a school-sanctioned activity. “The East Williston School District and The Wheatley School must address their anti-Muslim bias. It is clear they do not care about their Muslim students. Instead of supporting a vulnerable Muslim student, they chose to target, vilify and smear her to the entire school community. It is abhorrent and must be called out. All Long Islanders must stand with the student. To support the student, community members can declare their support using the hashtag #WeStandWithHuda on social media.” Source: cair.com/press_releases
By:Khadija Na- After the holocaust (WW2) antisemitism in ting the land with all the agriculture and othdeem Gr 9
Now that the burst of energy from social media has died down and we have all the facts, I’d like to talk about something serious happening in the world right now. Something serious that’s been happening for a very long time now. For a time, Arab Muslims, Arab Christians, and Arab Jews lived peacefully together, especially in Jerusalem. The three religions share historic landmarks and even worship side by side displaying unity and respect amongst the groups.
Europe grew and many Jews were kicked out of their homes, making them refugees. Palestine took in most of these Jewish refugees but as antisemitism grew worse in Europe, the Zionist movement began in the 19th century. This is an ideology that wants a Jewish only state. To get rid of the Jews in Europe, Britain interfered and decided to give away Palestinian land to the European Jews without consulting with the UN, surrounding countries or even Palestine themselves. This is where the problems began. Eventually, temporary peace was made and land was divided but the Zionists wanted more. And they kept wanting more. The UN and Britain stepped in once again to divide the land yet still, the Zionists ended up get-
er vital resources but the Palestinians were left with nothing. Soon enough, Palestinians were denied resources and their homes were illegally occupied. In 1948, the founding of the state of Israel in Palestine was announced. Today, there are approximately 7 million Palestinian refugees. Present day Palestinians cannot leave the country or access transportation, and medical help, voting rights, and clean water is inaccessible. Palestinians have been protesting for decades and even now as a ceasefire holds, citizens are saying their goodbyes and fearing for their lives. For 11 days of May, Israel has attacked Palestine harder than ever before, fighter jets and warplanes heavily bombing and shelling residences, schools and even
media buildings. On only May 22, the death toll stood at 248 including 66 children, along with 1900 others wounded from Israeli air and artillery attacks. This rocket fire killed about 12 Israelis 2 of which were children. The illegal occupation and control of Palestine by Zionists cannot be justified in any way. Palestinians have lost the human right to basic safety, this is ethnic cleansing and it needs to be stood up against.

Five lifestyle changes to enhance your mood and mental health
W
holefoods such as leafy green vegetables, legumes, wholegrains, lean red meat and seafood, provide nutrients that are important for optimal brain function. These foods contain magnesium, folate, zinc and essential fatty acids.Foods rich in polyphenols, such as berries, tea, dark chocolate, wine and certain herbs, also play an important role in brain function. In terms exercise, many types of fitness activities are potentially beneficial – from swimming, to jogging, to lifting weights, or playing sports. Even just getting the body moving by taking a brisk walk or doing active housework is a positive step.Activities which also involve social interaction and exposure to nature can potentially increase mental well-being even further. General exercise guidelines recommend getting at least 30 minutes of moderate activity on most days during the week (about 150 minutes total over the week). But even short bouts of activity can provide an immediate elevation of mood.
2. Reduce your vices
Managing problem-drinking or substance misuse is an obvious health recommendation. People with alcohol and drug problems have a greater likelihood than average of having a mental illness, and have far poorer health outcomes. Some research has shown that a little alcohol consumption (in particular wine) may have beneficial effects on preventing depression. Other recent data, however, has revealed that light alcohol consumption does not provide any beneficial effects on brain function.
Stopping smoking is also an important step, as nicotine-addicted people are constantly at the mercy of a withdrawal-craving cycle, which profoundly affects mood. It may take time to address the initial symptoms of stopping nicotine, but the brain chemistry will adapt in time. Quitting smoking is associated with better mood and reduced anxiety.
3.Prioritise rest and sleep
Sleep hygiene techniques aim to improve sleep quality and help treat insomnia. They including adjusting caffeine use, limiting exposure to the bed (regulating your sleep time and having a limited time to sleep), and making sure you get up at a similar time in the morning. Some people are genetically wired towards being more of a morning or evening person, so we need to ideally have some flexibility in this regard (especially with work schedules). It’s also important not to force sleep – if you can’t get to sleep within around 20 minutes, it may be best to get up and focus the mind on an activity (with minimal light and stimulation) until you feel tired. The other mainstay of better sleep is to reduce exposure to light – especially blue light from laptops and smartphones – prior to sleep. This will increase the secretion of melatonin, which helps you get to sleep. Getting enough time for relaxation and leisure activities is important for regulating stress. Hobbies can also enhance mental health, particularly if they involve physical
shine helps levels of the mood-maintaining chemical serotonin. It also boosts vitamin D levels, which also has an effect on mental health, and helps at the appropriate time to regulate our sleep-wake cycle. The benefits of sun exposure need to be balanced with the risk of skin cancer, so take into account the recommendations for sun exposure based on the time of day/year and your skin colour. You might also consider limiting your exposure to environmental toxins, chemicals and pollutants, including “noise” pollution, and cutting down on your mobile phone, computer and TV use if they’re excessive. An antidote to this can be simply spending time in nature. Studies show time in the wilderness can improve self-esteem and mood. In some parts of Asia, spending time in a forest (known as forest bathing) is activity. considered a mental health prescription. A natural extension of spending time in flora is 4. Get a dose of nature When the sun is shining, many of us seem also the positive effect that animals have on to feel happier. Adequate exposure to sun- us. Research suggests having a pet has many
positive effects, and animal-assisted therapy (with horses, cats, dogs, and even dolphins) may also boost feelings of well-being.
5. Reach out when you need help
Positive lifestyle changes aren’t a replacement for medication or psychological therapy but, rather, as something people can undertake themselves on top of their treatment. While many lifestyle changes can be positive, some changes (such as avoiding junk foods, alcohol, or giving up smoking) may be challenging if being used as a psychological crutch. They might need to be handled delicately, and with professional support. Strict advice promoting abstinence, or a demanding diet or exercise regime, may cause added suffering, potentially provoking guilt if you can’t meet these expectations. So go easy on yourself. That said, take a moment to reflect how you feel mentally after a nutritious wholefood meal, a good night’s sleep (free of alcohol), or a walk in nature with a friend. `
How to stay cool during a heat wave without air conditioning?
T
ORONTO -- In a heat wave, how can you stay cool if you don’t have air conditioning? Around a third of Canada is currently under heat warnings according to Environment Canada, with regions in B.C. and Alberta reaching astronomical — and dangerous — temperatures. Already, deaths have been reported in Western Canada that are believed to be connected to the elevated temperatures, which have hit more than 40 degrees in some cities. But many households in the affected regions do not have air conditioning, leaving residents to scramble for other ways to stay cool in the blistering heat. Here are some tips from Health Canada, Environment Canada and the Red Cross for how to handle the heat:
STAY UP TO DATE
Checking the weather frequently to know how hot it is going to get, and when in the day it will be the hottest, will help you plan ways to avoid the most dangerous temperatures. Experts advise against going outside during the middle of the day, when the sun is highest, and say you should avoid physical exertion during the hottest hours as well.
COOL FLUIDS
One of the biggest ways to keep yourself going during a heat wave is to stay hydrated, and drink cool liquids frequently. The Red Cross recommends that you stay away from coffee and alcohol, as they can cause dehydration. Another way to battle heat is to not just drink cool fluids, but to use them to cool yourself down by taking things like showers and baths and applying cool washcloths to your body. When not soaking in cool water, you should wear loose, thin clothing that is breathable. EMBRACE DARKNESS
When you don’t have any air conditioning, keeping the house itself cool can be a struggle in a heat wave. The first step to cooling a home is to cover the windows to cut off sunlight getting inside. This can be done with curtains, blinds, or by pinning up blankets if you lack curtains. If you own black-out curtains, this would be the time to use them. Keeping lights off in rooms that aren’t in use can also cut down on the heat. Health Canada adds that if it is safe, you could try opening your windows at night to let in cooler air — but this only applies if the temperature is expected to drop at night. During the current heat wave, temperatures have remained high in many regions overnight, so it’s important to check the forecast first. If there is a region in your home that is cooler than other areas, such as a basement, staying there during the hottest times of the day can help. If you own a small fan or portable air conditioner, positioning it in one smaller room with the door closed can also help make that room cooler than if the portable air conditioner was struggling to cool the entire building. When preparing food, it’s best to avoid using an oven as well. KNOW THE SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE While afflictions such as heat exhaustion can be fought by resting in a cool place and re-hydrating, heat stroke is a much more serious condition that requires medical assistance. According to Mayo Clinic, heat stroke is when a person’s body temperature rises to 40 degrees Celsius or higher. The symptoms for this include a person experiencing nausea or vomiting, having rapid breathing and flushed skin, and acting differently than normal, such as displaying confusion, slurred speech, or irritability. Another symptom that points to heat stroke is a change in sweating. A person’s skin may
be hot, red, dry or damp, but if someone who was previously sweating heavily ceases sweating without their temperature going down, that’s a bad sign. Health Canada advises that if someone has a high body temperature and falls unconscious, seems confused, or has stopped sweating, that’s when you should call 911. Because the risks of heat stroke are serious — it can cause vital organ damage if the person’s temperature is not lowered, or even death — it’s important to check on others. If you live alone, make sure to remain in contact with friends or family who can help if you are in need, and be sure to check on those who are more at risk of heat compli-
cations, such as elderly relatives or neighbours. But what should you do if you lack not only air conditioning, but a home to hole up in and escape the heat? Those who are experiencing homelessness are particularly vulnerable during these heat waves. Cities have opened cooling centres or recreation centres to allow people to come inside and cool off, and officials in Vancouver have specified that COVID-19 restrictions will not stop them from allowing people inside, and allowing them to remove their masks if they are having difficulty breathing. What you should know about balloon sinuplasty?
B
alloon sinuplasty is a type of endoscopic nasal surgery. It uses small balloon catheters that inflate to drain the large nasal sinuses. Balloon sinuplasty is typically used to treat cases of severe rhinosinusitis or sinus inflammation and blockage in the nose. The procedure was adapted from angioplasty, where balloon catheters are used to dilate damaged or congested blood vessels near the heart.
What is a balloon sinuplasty?
The procedure is minimally invasive, involves no cutting or loss of nasal tissues or bone, and has a short recovery time. As a result, balloon sinuplasty is quickly becoming the surgery of choice for chronic or severe sinusitis that does not respond to other medical therapies, such as nasal decongestant medications and rinses, antibiotics, and nasal and oral corticosteroids. A 2017 study found that the number of balloon sinus procedures performed in the U.S. increased 59 percentTrusted Source annually from 2011 to 2014.
How does it work?
Balloon sinuplasty works by dilating the openings of some or all three of the major nasal sinuses. This enables them to be cleared and drained. Most people who need the surgery have a condition that leads to the sinus membranes becoming inflamed, preventing drainage of mucus, pus, and discharge, and causing congestion. Over time, blocked and inflamed nasal passages can interfere with breathing, and lead to symptoms, such as a headache, jaw ache, and insomnia. Balloon sinuplasty allows doctors to forcibly widen blocked nasal passages and flush out or remove congestion, often using a saline solution.
Does it help?
A 2016 studyTrusted Source found that out of 15 adults who received balloon sinuplasty, all reported improved symptoms 3 and 6 months after surgery, without any unanticipated side effects. The same study concluded that those who underwent balloon sinuplasty had more open, clear nasal passages after the surgery than before.
Furthermore, the procedure helped preserve healthy nasal tissues, mucous membranes, and structure. A 2017 studyTrusted Source found that balloon sinuplasty was successful in treating 94 percent of chronic sinusitis cases in 30 children who underwent the procedure. The positive effects persisted for up to 1 year following surgery. A 2013 studyTrusted Source found that out of 20 individuals who received balloon sinuplasty, all reported dramatically improved symptoms within 1 week of surgery. These participants were also symptom-free during follow-ups in the year after their surgery. Another 2013 study, found that when performed in a doctor’s office under local anesthesia, people who had balloon sinuplasty reported an overall improved the quality of life. They also had more open sinuses in radiographic images 24 weeks after surgery. The same researchers reconfirmedTrusted Source the improvements in 2015, a further year after their original operations.
Is it safe?
Balloon sinuplasty is considered a very safe, effective, procedure when performed by a doctor. Since its introduction in the mid-2000s, balloon sinuplasty has become one of the most commonly performed types of sinus surgeries. This popularity is because it is associated with such high rates of success and low risks of complications. Benefits of balloon sinuplasty over traditional endoscopic sinus surgeries include: lower risk of bleeding shorter office, clinic, or hospital stay and much faster recovery time no intended damage or removal of sinus tissues, structures, mucous membranes, nasal bones or sinus cartilage fewer required post-operative appointments or need to inspect stitches or sutures reduced need for the use of operative and post-operative pain medications reduced need for general anesthesia and lowered risk of adverse reaction to it reduced risk of post-operative infection reduced risk of unintentional tissue or structure damage
reduced risk of scarring and continued inflammation As with all surgical procedures, balloon sinuplasty is known to cause some minor symptoms, but this resolves shortly after surgery.
Side effects
Common minor side effects associated with balloon sinuplasty include: bleeding or bloody drainage for a few days nasal, cheek, or forehead tenderness minor swelling in nasal cavities and passages and surrounding facial area congestion infection, usually from a failure to properly cleanse the sinuses after surgery In rare cases, sinuplasty has been reported to cause more severe symptoms, most notably damage to the structures that separate the brain from the sinuses. Though also considered a rare complication, sinuplasty has been known to occasionally interfere with an individual’s sense of smell, and the appearance of their nose. Anytime a person is exposed to a form of anesthesia there is always a risk of severe adverse reactions, such as breathing difficulties and heart failure.
What is the procedure like and does it hurt?
Depending on individual factors and preferences, balloon sinuplasties are done by an ear, nose, and throat or ENT doctor in their office, an outpatient clinic, or a hospital. The procedure may be done using general or local anesthesia. After administering either form of anesthesia, a doctor inserts an endoscope, a thin, flexible, plastic tube with a camera and light
on the end, into the nasal passages. Once the entrance to the cavity is reached, the doctor will slowly advance a small balloon catheter over the guiding endoscope wire. When the balloon catheter is correctly positioned inside the nasal passage and cavity, it will be slowly inflated and pressed against the sinus walls, to fracture the bone slightly and force an opening. Once the balloon is fully inflated, a doctor will flush out the passageways and cavities with a saline rinse to further remove debris. Finally, the balloon is removed and the sinus is left to continue to drain naturally. Most people who undergo balloon sinuplasty report feelings of sinus pressure or numbness only during the surgery, not noticeable pain. Most procedures take around 1 hour to perform.
How long does it take to recover?
Most people can go home a few hours after balloon sinuplasty surgeries and return to most regular activities after 24 to 48 hours. Usually, sinuplasty tends to cause grogginess, tiredness, tenderness, congestion, and bloody drainage in the week following surgery. A doctor may advise against noseblowing for 1 to 2 days immediately after the surgery. Usually, it is advisable for an individual to avoid strenuous activities for at least a week after sinuplasty. Many people find it helpful to sleep or rest with their head and neck in an elevated position to promote drainage. And over-thecounter anti-inflammatories can help manage irritating or uncomfortable symptoms afterward. Source: medicalnewstoday.com
Coronavirus vaccination tracker: How many people in Canada have received shots? TORONTO -- Canada is in the middle of its largest mass vaccination program in history, with tens of thousands of COVID-19 inoculations being administered daily across the provinces and territories. Four vaccines, developed by Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson, have been authorized for use in Canada to date. As the country continues the ongoing fight against
COVID-19, CTVNews.ca is tracking the daily and cumulative vaccine doses administered in Canada by surveying the data from public health units. The interactive map outlines the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses distributed as a percentage of the country’s population. CTVNews.ca is tallying vaccination doses across the country based on statements from public health agencies. Source: ctvnews.ca
Why reports of COVID-19 infections after 2 vaccine doses aren’t cause for alarm?
‘Breakthrough infections’ among fully vaccinated Canadians just 0.5 per cent of reported cases, data shows At first glance, reports of people getting infected with COVID-19 despite being fully vaccinated can sound alarming, as if this crop of long-awaited vaccines aren’t doing their job. A Toronto hospital recently announced an outbreak involving cases among people who’d received one or both vaccine doses. Back in May, nine cases of COVID-19 were reported in just one week among fully-vaccinated members of the New York Yankees baseball team and its staff. And across Canada, deaths from the illness have even been reported among individuals who’ve had two shots, including a senior in Manitoba in May and an elderly long-term care resident in Ontario a month later.
But there are two key things to keep in mind about these “breakthrough infections.” For one thing, they’re rare — making up around 0.5 per cent of reported COVID-19 cases since vaccination efforts began, the latest Canadian data shows. And when post-vaccination infections do happen, they typically tend to be mild. Have a question or something to say? CBC News is live in the comments now. Experts also stress that while no vaccine offers perfect protection for every single person, the relatively infrequent examples of serious infections after full vaccination — coupled with the dramatic drop in cases, hospitalizations, and deaths from COVID-19 — show these vaccines are indeed doing their job, and excelling at it. Nearly all COVID-19 deaths in U.S. are now among people who aren’t vaccinated “Ultimately, what we want the vaccine to
do is prevent people from getting severely ill,” explained immunologist and researcher Matthew Miller, an associate professor at McMaster University. Even in cases where breakthrough infections do occur, he continued, those infections tend to be a lot less severe than cases reported in partially vaccinated or totally unprotected individuals. “Anybody can tolerate a runny nose for a few days,” Miller said. “What we really want to ensure is that people aren’t ending up in the hospital, on ventilators, fighting for their lives.” Few Canadians dying of COVID-19 post-vaccination So far, close to 34 million vaccine doses have been administered in Canada, and reports of breakthrough infections after full vaccination remain low. The latest Public Health Agency of Cana-
da (PHAC) data, provided in response to questions from CBC News, shows 2,731 cases of COVID-19 among fully vaccinated individuals have been reported in Canada’s national data set as of June 21. Someone is fully vaccinated two weeks after their second vaccine dose, reflecting the minimum time period needed to build full immunity, according to PHAC. The data shows infections among fully vaccinated Canadians represent just 0.5 per cent of the COVID-19 cases reported since the country’s vaccine rollout started in December. That finding reflects data from 10 provinces and territories which currently report vaccination information to federal public health officials. It doesn’t include figures from Quebec, Saskatchewan, or Newfoundland and Labrador. Source: ctvnews.ca
