Canada’s Trudeau wins another minority in election, claims ‘clear mandate’ MONTREAL/OTTAWA, Sept 21 (Reuters) anadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hung onto power on Monday as his main rival conceded defeat, saying he had won a clear mandate to govern although he fell short of his goal for a majority win. Trudeau, in power since 2015 and governing with a minority of House of Commons seats since 2019, decided to gamble on an early vote and capitalize on his government’s handling of the pandemic, which included massive spending to support individuals and businesses and a push for high vaccination rates. Instead, he will end up where he started after an unexpectedly tight election race characterized by a lackluster campaign and voter anger at an election during a

pandemic. Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole, whose party placed second, conceded defeat as results trickled in late into the night. Trudeau spoke to supporters shortly after, pledging to work with other parties for the good of all Canadians.“You are sending us back to work with a clear mandate to get Canada through this pandemic and to the brighter days ahead,” Trudeau said to a small crowd gathered in a hotel ballroom. “What we’ve seen tonight is that millions of Canadians have chosen a progressive plan.” CBC and CTV projected that Trudeau’s Liberal government would hold a minority of seats in the House of Commons, meaning he will need another party’s support to govern.............. Device used to send threat to New Zealand team belonged to India: Fawad

F

ederal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry said on Wednesday that the device used to send a threat to the New Zealand cricket team belonged to India. Addressing a press conference in Islamabad alongside Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, the minister said that the entire situation started due to a fake post by someone claiming to be Tehreeki-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militant Ehsanullah Ehsan. Fawad said that in August, a fake post was created under Ehsan’s name which told the New Zealand cricket board and government to refrain from sending the team to Pakistan as it would be “targeted”. He said that following this post, the

bureau chief of The Sunday Guardian, Abhinandan Mishra, published an article claiming that the team may face a terror threat in Pakistan citing the fake post by Ehsan. According to its website, The Sunday Guardian was founded by politician MJ Akbar, who served as the minister for external affairs in the Modi-led BJP government till 2018. “Interestingly, [Mishra] has strong links with [former Afghanistan vice president] Amrullah Saleh,” he said.He said that on August 24, New Zealand opener Martin Guptill’s wife received an email threatening her husband from ID with the username “Tehreek-i-Labbaik”........................................Source dawn.com

Déjà Vu at the Election No One Wanted By: Khadija Nadeem

A

Miracle’s editorial board member

bout a week before the election, polls predicted a 57% chance of the Liberals winning a minority government. Seeing as that’s exactly what happened in an unsurprising sweep of the country, the Liberals have emerged victorious once more with a minority government like that of 2019’s election. In terms of seats, as of press time, the Liberals have 158 seats in comparison to their 157 seats from 2019. So the question to be asking now, is what did the Liberals gain from calling this election? Although Trudeau repeatedly stated that the election was called to give Canadians a voice in the exit of this pandemic, he has also insinuated that he had hopes of winning a majority government. Obviously, this didn’t happen and yet, Trudeau put on a brave face on the night of the election to address the nation. He hinted at no remorse over the time put in or the 610 million dollars that funded this election. Furthermore, this year, the voter turnout rate was a meager 59% which led experts to believe that the public has lost faith or confidence in our elections. This leads to another minor flaw in our democratic system, although the Conservative party won the popular vote with almost 34% of voters, the Liberal party won more seats and therefore a minority government with barely 33% of the public vote. The jury is still out if it’s fair that although the Conserva-

tives got more votes, the Liberal Party is the one that came out victorious. Although it’s difficult to track religious and ethnic allegiances, a record-breaking number of Muslim candidates won seats in parliament this year. Of Pakistani origin, Liberal MP Salma Zahid won her seat for the third time this year in the Scarborough Center Riding. Liberal incumbent Arif Virani also won a seat for his third term in the Parkdale-High Park Riding in Toronto. Sameer Zuberi, Liberal incumbent, was re-elected for the Pierrefonds-Dollard riding in Quebec. Conservative incumbent, Ziad Aboultaif, won the Edmonton-Manning riding in Alberta. Liberal incumbent, Ali Ehsassi, won the Willowdale Riding in Ontario. Omar Alghabra, Liberal incumbent, won the Mississauga Centre Riding. Shafqat Ali won the Brampton Centre Riding in Ontario. Other Canadian Muslim identifying candidates also won seats in the York South-Weston, Richmond Hill, Mississauga-Erin Hills, Ottawa Centre, and Vancouver-Granville ridings. In total that makes 12 elected MPs, who openly identify as Muslim, in Parliament. All these candidates have made promises to tackle Islamophobia in Canada and bring up issues in Parliament that are important and relate to Muslims. To specify, Islamic issues our community should be concerned with are the legal challenge of Bill 21, Canada’s action against the genocide of the Muslim Uyghurs in China, Canada’s position on the ethnic cleansing and illegal occupation

taking place in Palestine, and the requested creation of the Special Envoy on Islamophobia. Different political parties appear to choose and champion one or more of these issues. For instance, let’s take Bill 21 that gives way to second class citizenship for Quebec Sikhs, Muslims, and Jews, which creates two layers of citizenship. One for those born in Canada, and one for those who immigrated here. The bill also bans the wearing of religious symbols, including the hijab, by public servants meaning figures of authority or teachers. As of right now, the Liberal Party has made no statement regarding intervention of this bill. In fact, the Green Party has the only platform that has a strong position on Bill 21 including publicly committing to getting involved legally. On the international scene, at least 1 million Uyghur Muslims have been interned in over 85 identified camps within an autonomous region in Northwest China. After time spent denying these camps, China finally acknowledged them as re-education centers. Members of the Muslim minority say they were detained, interrogated, and beaten because of their religion, under the guise of ‘re-education’. The Conservative platform was the only one containing several clear policy stances to ensure action in responding to the genocide taking place in China. Meanwhile, in the Middle East, Palestine is, and for a very long time has been, illegally occupied by Israel. Palestinians have no access to clean water, medical care

The B.C. Muslim Association 12300 Blundell Road Richmond, B.C. V6W 1B3

and are illegally being forced out of their homes. For years, they have been enduring this torture, so what will the Canadian government do to stand up for them? Although the NDP has a strong stance on the need for Canada to have a principled position in relation to the Israel-Palestine conflict, the Conservative party is adamant on moving the Canadian embassy to Jerusalem and recognizing it as Israel’s national capital. Returning to the local landscape, although Canada has come a long way in battling Islamophobia, incidents like the London Terror Attack, the ruthless murder of Masjid caretaker Br. Zafis and the recent attacks on Hijab wearing women in Alberta remind us that our community still faces the menace of racism, and our government needs to take responsibility and action for that. With all these facts laid out, should Muslims be supporting the status-quo? What have the elected members done for the community in the Parliament? Has it been more than raising the voice? Has that voice been translated to concrete tangible actions with measurable results? Our community needs to do a better job of educating ourselves on what’s good for us and holding ourselves and our elected members accountable before heading to the polls once more. Waan Laysa Lil Insana illa ma’ sa’aa That man can have nothing but what he strives for.

Several ridings still too close to call with Only those benefitting from corrupt many mail-in ballots still to be counted system are opposing EVMs: PM Imran

TORONTO / OTTAWA -- While Canadians didn’t have to wait too long on election night to find out who will lead the next government, there are still several individual seats too close to call and it could take a few days to get clear results with many mail-in ballots still to be counted. As of Wednesday morning, 17 seats had yet to be called, according to CTVNews.ca’s election tracker, with the Liberals leading in eight of the races, the Conservatives leading in two, the Bloc Quebecois leading four and the NDP in three. The number still to be decided won’t affect the overall election result, which saw the Liberals returned with a minority government, the Conservatives the Official Opposition, and both the Bloc and NDP holding enough seats to hold the balance of power when it comes to the Liberals passing key legislation. But the outcomes of the indi-

vidual races will have an impact on the people who live in those ridings, and could also end up affecting the outcome of free votes, where members don’t always vote along party lines, as well as the overall demographic breakdown of the House of Commons. Seat counts can sometimes be seen as a referendum on party leaders, and any lastminute changes to the projected counts will be assessed by the parties as they take stock of their overall electoral showing. Of course, there are some seats that may hold more symbolic or strategic value for certain parties. For example, there’s little doubt the Liberals would love to win back the British Columbia seat of Vancouver Granville, which they lost after Jody Wilson-Raybould was expelled from the Liberal caucus over the SNC-Lavalin scandal. She went on to win the seat as an independent in the 2019 federal election, but chose not to run for reelection this year. As of Wednesday, Liberal Taleeb Noormohamed was leading the riding by just 230 votes—or just half a percentage point—over NDP candidate Anjali Appadurai, with the results of the local mail-in ballots still yet to be reported. In Vancouver Granville, 5359 local mail-in ballot voting kits had been returned to Elections Canada by election day. Source: ctvnews.ca

Secrecy over B.C.’s true number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients VANCOUVER - Just how many British Columbians are actually in hospital with COVID-19 is a tightly-held secret, with few privy to the true number as health officials keep two sets of numbers: one public, the other internal. In B.C., the health minister has said COVID-19 patients in intensive care units are removed from the tally when they’re no longer infectious with the virus. That policy is in place even though they may spend months in hospital struggling to survive their infection as they occupy scarce beds and medical resources. CTV News has asked the Ministry of Health for the number of patients admitted to hospital for COVID-19 but not counted in the public figures, but has not received a response. In ternal documents from Vancouver Coastal Health describe the patients as “off precautions,” meaning extra steps to avoid being exposed to the virus are no longer necessary. As recently as July, the health authority was notifying a relatively wide circle of staff as to how many patients were in hospital but not part of the public

hospitalization figures. For example, on July 21, an internal memo documented 38 patients hospitalized in the health authority, 12 of them in critical care, and another 29 described as “current hospitalized off COVID precautions cases” with an accompanying chart. Subsequent memos to staff have excluded the “off precautions” data in favour of a “new streamlined version of the report,” with very few medical personnel now aware of the true number of people still hospitalized due to the virus.........Source: cbc.ca

VANCOUVER - The Liberal party now has a minority government and will likely act fast to try to deliver on some of its election promises. The party’s election platform packed with promises will cost about $78 billion over the next five years. According to the prime minister, the big ones are health, housing, child care and efforts to combat climate change. If you have taken the time to read the long listed document, you may have come away wondering how the government plans to pay for

all those initiatives because there is a lot to chew on. “It’s almost as if that they think that we’ve gone to a buffet restaurant and they can invite everybody in and we can all eat as much as we want and the service staff will never bring us the bill,” said Kris Sims, B.C. director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberals plan to go after the rich and tax the banks.“Where do you think the banks are going to get that money from?” asked Sims. Her point is valid. Often times when companies have to pay more, they find a way to balance out the books, either by increasing fees and surcharges on consumers or by laying off staff. Liberal promises to tackle the myriad issues facing Canada will require support from the NDP, which could lead to even higher spending. The NDP’s planned vision for the country was estimated to cost about $214 billion,......Source: bc.ctvnews.ca

Consumers expected to pay the price for election promises

Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Wednesday that only those elements who were benefitting from a corrupt system were opposed to the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) and had vested interests in resisting change in Pakistan. The premier made these remarks at a ceremony held in Islamabad to mark the signing of performance agreements between him and federal ministers. He said that his government had a great opportunity to prove that they could perform well as “we are facing all mafia, [and] all [those with] with vested interests and do not want [a positive] change in this country are opposing us.” “They are even opposing EVMs,” the premier said, asking what benefit would the machines

be to the government and ruling party. He pointed out that almost every election in the country had been controversial, but none of the parties who had formed the government had ever worked towards a solution for the problem.“After the 1970s, anyone who loses in an election makes allegations of rigging,” he said. “And we are introducing a system (EVMs) that could solve all of Pakistan’s problems.” He added, “Who are these people who are opposing [EVMs] ... Realise that it a small fraction with vested interests and that has benefitted from a corrupt system that is opposing this”. The prime minister’s remarks follow a longstanding dispute between the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI)-led government and the opposition and Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) over the use of EVMs. While the government has been insisting on the use of EVMs in the next general elections, maintaining that the move would ensure transparency and free and fair elections, the opposition has rejected the proposal. The opposition has particularly taken exception to the proposal over not being consulted on the matter and the government bulldozing the legislation for the use of EVMs in the National Assembly, despite the former’s protest.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has projected Pakistan’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth to reach 4 per cent in the fiscal year 2021-22 (FY22) as business activity gradually resumed in the second year of the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the Asian Development Outlook 2021, the growth forecast witnessed recovery in private investment as consumer confidence and business actively improved amid the ongoing vaccination rollout and various economic stimulus measures announced in the budget for 2021-22. The report noted that investment was expected to strengthen as global sentiment improves and the International Monetary Fund-supported stabilisation program continues to progress. On the supply side, the outlook for agriculture is encouraging in view of the government’s ambitious Agriculture Transformation Plan. “The plan aims to achieve food security for a growing population by expanding land under cultivation, revamping extension services, boosting

water-use efficiency, developing postharvest storage and food processing plants, augmenting bank credit, and introducing the ‘Kissan Card’ as a digital wallet for the direct and swift transfer of subsidies for seed, pesticides, and fertiliser.” Similarly, steady normalisation of global merchandise trade, improved market sentiment and stronger business and consumer confidence was expected from the continuing rollout of Covid-19 vaccination programme and an accommodative monetary policy, according to the report.S. dawn.com

As Pakistan played their Cricket World Cup opening match against the West Indies on Friday, Prime Minister Imran Khan offered some advice to the men in green. “My advice to the Pakistan team today is what I would tell my players before a match: Give your 100 percent, fight to the last ball and never let the fear of losing enter your mind, influence your strategy or play,” the premier, who is currently on an official visit to Saudi Arabia, said via Twitter. “Pakistan’s prayers and support are with Sarfaraz and the team.”

Last month, Prime Minister Imran held a meeting with the national cricket team and the Pakistan Cricket Board at Bani Gala during which he gave the team tips for World Cup success. “With your skills, sportsman spirit and your conduct, bring glory to Pakistan’s name,” he had said. “The entire nation’s prayers are with you [...] Representing the country at an international forum is a big honour. You are ambassadors of the nation and the people’s eyes are on you, and their hopes rest with you.” Source: dawn.com

DISCOVER ISLAM: The Political Aspect of Islam

slamic legislation has introduced basic principles and general rules in political matters which act as the basis upon which the Islamic State is built. The ruler of the Muslim State executes and implements the commands of Allah (SWT). Allah (SWT) says: Do they then seek the judgment of (the days of) Ignorance? And who is better in judgment than Allah for a people who have firm Faith.[5:50] The ruler of the Islamic country is in fact a deputy over the Ummah, which obliges him to implement the following: [1] To do everything in his ability to implement the legislations and laws of Allah, and to provide honest, honourable ways of living for the nation, to safeguard the Religion, security, lives, and wealth. The Prophet (SAW) said: “No slave of Allah is made to look after some affairs of the Muslims and fails to be true and sincere in it, except that he will not smell the scent of the Paradise.” [al-Bukhari] The ruler of the Islamic State must have the necessary characteristics, as described by Umar ibn-al-Khattab (RA) when he said to his Companions: “Show me a man whom I can assign to take care of certain affairs of the Muslims which are of concern to me.” They replied: “Abdur-Rahman ibn ‘Auf. ” He said: “He is weak.” They mentioned another man and he said, “I have no need of him.” They then asked, “What type of person do you want?” He said: “I want a man who, if he is their leader, he behaves as if lie was one of them, and if he is not their leader, he appears as if he were.” They said: “No one else is more suitable than Ar-Rabee `ah ibn ul-Haarith.” `Umar said: “You have spoken the truth,” and he appointed him. The ruler must not appoint anyone over the Muslims who is not fit for the post or trust. He should not favor a friend or a relative over a worthy candidate for a certain post. The Prophet (SAW) said: “No slave is given responsibility over some people and dies in a state in which he is treacherous to them, except that Allah forbids him from Paradise.” [Muslim] The aforementioned rules and principles are characterised by the following: * They are divine, ordained by Allah and in their light all are considered equal… the ruler and the ruled, the rich and the poor, the noble and ignoble, the black and white – no one, no matter how high-ranking he is, is allowed to violate them or pass laws that contradict with them. Allah (SWT) says: It is not for a believer, man or woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decreed a matter that they should have any option in their decision. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger, he has indeed strayed in a plain error. [33:36] * All are required to abide, respect, and implement these rules and principles; both the ruler and the ruled. Allah (SWT) says: The only saying of the faithful believers, when they are called to Allah and His Messenger, to judge between them, is that they say: ‘We hear and we obey.’ And such are the successful ones (who will live forever in Paradise). [24:51] In Islam, no man has absolute power; including the ruler for his powers are restricted by the limits set by the Islamic legislation; if he opposes them, people must

disobey him and follow the truth. The Prophet (SAW) said: “It is obligatory upon a Muslim to listen and obey (the authority) in those things which he likes or does not, except if he is commanded to do something sinful. If he is commanded to do a sinful act, then do not hear or obey,” [al-Bukhari] * Mutual consultation…the political system in Islam is built upon this. Allah (SWT) says: And those who answer the Call of their Lord, and establish the Prayer, and who (conduct) their affairs by mutual consultation, and who spend of what We have bestowed on them.[42:38] Allah (SWT) also says: And by the Mercy of Allah, you dealt with them gently. And had you been severe and harsh hearted, they would have broken away from about you; so pass over (their faults), and ask (Allah’s) Forgiveness for them; and consult them in the affairs. [3:159] In the first verse, Allah associates mutual consultation with prayers, which is the backbone of Islam. This indicates the importance of mutual consultation in Islam in all matters that concern the Ummah (nation). The people of knowledge should be consulted in these matters. At the end of the first ayah, Allah (SWT) praises the Believers in general because they mutually consult one another in all their matters. In the second ayah, Allah (SWT) orders His Messenger, who was the Head of State, to mutually consult his Companions in matters that are of common interest to the Ummah (nation) if no apparent ruling was revealed concerning it. There is no mutual consultation in matters which have a ruling in Shari’ah. The Prophet (SAW) said: “No people mutually consult, except they would be guided to the best matter. The Messenger of Allah (SWT) then recited:and who conduct their affairs by mutual consultation.” [al-Adab al-Mufrad] Scholars have stated the obligation for the ruler to consult the people in matters relating to their interests. If he neglects their consultation, the people are required to demand it in order to say their word and give their opinion. This is based on the above mentioned verses, and because the Religion of Islam considers the ruler a deputy who is responsible to perform what was delegated to him. Thus the people are required to monitor the ruler’s implementation of the Law. Islam gives all people the freedom to voice their opinion and criticize in the manner they deem appropriate, in accordance to the principles set by the Religion. They should not do so in a manner which causes disruption. The Prophet (SAW) said: “Indeed the best Jihad is to utter a word of justice before a tyrannical ruler”

[Abu Dawood & ibn Majaah] Abu Bakr, the first Caliph of Islam, addressed the people saying “O people! I have been appointed as your ruler though I am not the best among you. So if you find me upon the truth, help me. But if you find me in the wrong, correct me. Obey me so long as I obey Allah in conducting your affairs. However, if I disobey Him I have no claim to your obedience.” Umar ibn ul-Khattab, the second Caliph, stood on the pulpit one day and addressed people saying: “O people! If you find that I have fallen into corruption… then straighten me.” A Bedouin rose from amongst the people and said: “By Allah! If we find you crooked, we will straighten it with our swords,” yet Umar did not get angry or harbour malice towards him. He only raised his hands towards the heaven and said: “Praise be to Allah Who has made among our nation a person who is able to correct the crookedness of Umar.” The ruler is even called to account and questioned. Once, `Umar addressed people while having a two-piece dress on. When he said: “O people! Listen and obey,” a

man stood up and said: “We will not listen nor obey! `Umar (RA) asked: “And why is that?” The man answered: “Because you have a two-pie, dress while we only have a single piece one (he had allocated one dress for each Muslim).” `Umar at once called out in hi loudest voice: “Abdullah ibn `Umar (his son)! Tell them!’ Abdullah said: “It is my dress which I gave to him.” The man then said: “Now we will listen and obey.” Thus Islam preserves the rights and freedoms of both the society and the individual. It safeguards the sources of legislation from the whims and desires of legislators, since they shape their legislations with personal or regional needs and circumstances. The Islamic legislation does not discuss other minute details of government. This aims to leave the door open for Muslims to lay down proper rules and regulations that suit their specific conditions and serve their best interest in any specific place and time, provided such rules and regulations do not contradict the principles and fundamentals of Islam. There are instances in life when you feel all alone. I don’t mean it in literal sense. What I mean by being alone is that you can’t relate yourself with anyone. Not your frenemies, your well-wishers, your relatives, your siblings, or even your parents. It seems like no one gets what you are feeling. It’s very painful where you are not able to express what you feel. And even in the midst of crowd you will feel all alone, like a misfit on this planet. In this competitive, ruthless, aggressive race of moving ahead in life and proving oneself, no one seems to have time and energy for your rantings. It seems like you are static or slowed down and world does not seem to care, it will continue with or without you. Hold on.. There is actually someone who cares about what you feel. Yes! Have you thought of sharing your thoughts, feelings with the One who created this whole world. Even though He already knows what you feel, your feelings, intricacies, complexities more than yourself, He wants to hear it all from you. Just internalize it. The King of all kings. The Owner of all. Your Rabb loves to hear your voice. You an insignificant speck in universe are not insignificant to the Creator of this universe. He loves to hear your rantings. He can hear what you speak and He can hear the unspoken. He is the owner and maintainer of heavens and earth and all in between and of all what we don’t know about. It does not stop Him from listening to your incoherent speech. Share all your complexities, share what you can’t share with anyone. Share it with Him. He knows. He understands it all, the internal conflicts, the struggles. You may not be able to express it all. Don’t worry about coherence. Just Tell Him. Everything. Source: backtojannah.com

Here’s what Trudeau’s Liberals have promised for their third term

TORONTO -- Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau and his party have won a minority government on a platform of promises that included billions of dollars in new spending to rebuild the country from the COVID-19 pandemic. The Liberal platform, released on Sept. 1, is based on major promises from six key issues: the pandemic, climate change, housing, health care, the economy and reconciliation. Here are some of the big promises that Canadians can expect from a third Liberal term: PANDEMIC The Liberals have pledged $9 billion to train and offer salary bumps for thousands of new personal support workers. The party also promised 10 days of paid sick leave for federal workers, funding for improved ventilation in schools and legal protection for businesses that decide to require vaccinations. The Liberals also promised $100 million to study the long-term health impacts of COVID-19, including the study of COVID-19 “long haulers” and its impact on differ-

ent demographics. The party is also pledging $1 billion for provincial vaccine passports, which nearly each province has now adoptedin some form. HOUSING To address Canada’s housing crisis, the Liberals have promised to build, preserve or repair 1.4 million homes over the next four years and are promising $2.7 billion in increased funding for the National Housing Co-investment fund. To help Canadians afford a new home, the Liberals would ban blind bidding and would provide $1 billion in loans and grants to help facilitate a home purchase. HEALTH CARE The Liberals have promised to ensure that all Canadians have access to a family doctor and can afford prescription medication. The party would also provide $3 billion over five years to support the application of higher standards for long-term care homes. When it comes to mental health, the Liberals have promised $150 million for mental

health and PTSD projects targeting those impacted by COVID-19 and $4.5 billion over five years for a Canada Mental Health Transfer. The party would also implement a three-digit mental health crisis hotline. ECONOMY The Liberals have promised to restore one million jobs lost during the pandemic through several employment and business benefits designed to bring people back to work. The party plans to extend most key COVID-19 benefits into the fall of 2021, including subsidies for businesses and benefits for those out of work due to the pandemic. RECONCILIATON The Liberals have previously promised $18 billion over 5 years to improve quality of life and create new opportunities for people in Indigenous communities. The party has also promised to address the

OTTAWA -- The federal Liberals may soon start feeling the pressure to move quickly on spending and tax plans, some of which the party’s platform promised this fiscal year. The Liberals are expected to release an update on the government’s finances through this fall that would give an outlook for the deficit and the economy. Former parliamentary budget officer Kevin Page says

the Liberals may want to release the document in November and use it to introduce some spending and tax measures. He says the need to move quickly may be a message from an electorate that returned the parties to almost their exact same standings prior to a campaign that ground policy-making to a halt. Back in a minority mandate, the Liberals

root causes of missing and murdered Indigenous women, including access to housing, poverty and the loss of Indigenous culture. The party has also promised continued action on access to clean drinking water for Indigenous communities. CLIMATE CHANGE Trudeau and the Liberals have promised to bring national greenhouse gas emissions between 40 and 45 per cent below 2005 levels before the end of the decade and have committed to making Canada a net-zero country by 2050. The party has also promised to continue raising its carbon pricing and is expecting the fossil fuel industry to reduce emissions. Source:-ctvnews.ca

Liberals to face pressure to move quickly on fiscal plan as fourth wave hits economy

will have to gain enough opposition support to get their agenda through Parliament. Toby Sanger, executive director of Canadians for Tax Fairness, says the Liberals should find willing political partners for some new tax measures because of overlapping promises made across all party platforms. Conservatives fail to dethrone Liberals

OTTAWA -- The Conservative Party has come up short, failing to dethrone the now three-term Liberal Party. Leader Erin O’Toole conceded defeat in the early hours of Tuesday morning, after the Liberals secured a minority government win.“Ours is a conservativism that dwells not in the past but learns from it to secure the future,” he said, speaking to supporters at a hockey arena in Oshawa, Ont. “We will take stock of what worked and what didn’t and we will continue to put in the time showing more Canadians that they are welcome in the Conservative Party of Canada.” As of 1:00 a.m. EDT Tuesday, results showed the Conservatives have been

elected or are leading in 121 seats – making significant gains in the Atlantic Canada region – but not near the 156 seats Liberals look to have gained so far. O’Toole said Trudeau was hoping for a quick “power grab” but instead forced the country back into a political scenario not unlike it was 36 days ago. “Mr. Trudeau thinks Canadians should endure 18 more months of divisive campaigning, so he can try once again to get the election result he wants. We need to heal the divides in Canada not risk worsening them for selfish gain,” he said. O’Toole himself won his Durham, Ont. seat, and many of his previous shadow cabinet colleagues have kept their seats.

There were high hopes among conservatives across the country when the campaign launched on Aug. 15. Poll after poll showed the Conservatives gaining ground on the incumbent Liberals and, at times, surpassing their lead. O’Toole sought to capture the support of a more progressive elector, promoting the party’s housing, child care, and climate change policies, while at the same time reinforcing responsible post-pandemic spending. He declared himself as pro-choice and an ally of the LGBTQ2+ community, something his predecessor did not do. Source:citynews1130.com

Conservative on national council says members should review O’Toole’s leadership

OTTAWA -- A Conservative who sits on the party’s national council says Erin O’Toole should undergo an accelerated leadership review by members following his election loss, marking the first open challenge to him staying in the role. Bert Chen represents Ontario, but says he’s speaking as a loyal member and there are a lot of others unhappy with the more moderate direction O’Toole has taken the party, which was opposite to how he ran in its leadership contest to win over party faithful.

“If the decision by Mr. O’Toole paid off in forming Conservative government, I would have been more than happy to give him the benefit of the doubt had he been prime minister-designate,” Chen said. “Considering that was not the case, I believe this needs to be done.” In the leadership race, O’Toole campaigned as the “true blue” conservative, making promises like axing the Liberals’ carbon price, only to introduce one of his own after winning.

The Conservative leader also appeared to reverse his positions on defunding the CBC and protecting the conscience rights of doctors from having to refer patients for services they morally object to, like medical assistance in dying or abortion. O’Toole also created confusion when he inked a footnote into his platform on a promise to repeal a Liberal ban of some 1,500 models of firearms, including the AR-15 and the Ruger Mini-14, pledging instead to uphold their prohibition pending the outcome of a clas-

sification review. Chen has started an online petition to collect signatures from members supportive of asking the party’s national council to convene a referendum on O’Toole’s leadership before a scheduled one in 2023. He says an election could happen before then and ultimately it was members who elected O’Toole, so caucus should know how they feel. Source:ctvnews.ca

NDP may hold the balance of power in Parliament TORONTO -- Jagmeet Singh and the New Democrats may hold the balance of power in the next Liberal minority government by playing a key role in helping pass confidence matters and key legislation. Singh, who won in his B.C. riding of Burnaby South, was steadfast throughout the campaign that he was running to form government, but the party was consistently running a distant third to Justin Trudeau’s Liberals and Erin O’Toole’s Conservatives. “I want to say that Canadians know that you can count on the New Democrats to continue fighting for you. As we’ve fought for you in the pandemic when times are difficult, when people were

struggling, when people were worried about their future. We were there for you,” Singh said in his concession speech late on Monday night. “Friends, I want you to know that our fight will continue. We are never going to give up fighting for you and your families, as we have done in the pandemic as we showed you in this campaign, we will continue to make sure you are first, your families are taken care of, that your needs are met. That’s what New Democrats are all about.” The party hoped to win more seats than it did in 2019 when it was dealt a major blow, losing 20 of the 44 seats it previously held. It was the party’s worst show-

ing in more than a decade. Despite those heavy losses, the party was able to play a pivotal role in the House of Commons, often propping up the Liberals, but also exercising their influence to press the Liberals on a number of issues, particularly during the pandemic. Projections show the party could gain more seats this time, potentially giving the NDP greater influence negotiating with the Liberals. In Atlantic Canada, the party lost the only seat they had in the region, with NDP candidate Mary Shortall losing to Liberal candidate Joanne Thompson. Source:ctvnews.ca

Biden says US donating ‘historic’ extra 500 million Covid vaccines

to push back against the pandemic. “This is an all-hands-on-deck crisis,” Biden said. The pledge from Biden at the summit, held virtually from the White House, brings the total US commitment of donated vaccines to 1.1 billion — more than the rest of the world combined, according to an AFP report.“The US has already shipped 160m of these doses to 100 countries,” the White House said in a statement. “For every one United States President Joe Biden has shot we’ve put in an American arm to date, opened a Covid-19 summit of world leaders we are now donating three shots globally.” with a promise to donate a “historic” extra Source: dawn.com 500 million vaccines to countries struggling

England’s top medic says Covid-19 transmission highest in children England’s Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty has said that Covid-19 transmission was currently highest in 12- to 15-year-olds and that almost all unvaccinated children would get infected at some point. “There is definitely substantial transmission happening in this age group,” Whitty told lawmakers. “In fact, the age group we’re talking about is the one in which the highest rate of transmission is currently occurring, as far as we can tell.”Whitty said vaccines would reduce the risk of infection by 50 per cent, possibly more. United Nations: Guterres warns ‘we are on the edge of an abyss’ The world has never been more threatened or more divided, United Nations SecretaryGeneral Antonio Guterres told nations of the world on Tuesday as he kicked off the 76th General Assembly session, urging all 193 member states to “wake up” and realise that solidarity is the only way out of disaster. “We are on the edge of an abyss,” Guterres said to an assembly hall meeting together for the first time since last year’s suspended in-person session due to the coronavirus pandemic. “We face the greatest cascade of crises in our lifetimes.” The COVID-19 pandemic has supersized inequalities, the climate crisis is pummeling the planet, upheavals in Afghanistan, Ethiopia and Yemen have thwarted peace and a surge of misformation is polarizing people everywhere. “Human rights are under fire. Science is un-

der assault. And economic lifelines for the most vulnerable are coming too little and too late —if they come at all,” the UN chief said. While vaccines have been developed in record time, they are missing for far too many people. Source: aljazeera.com

Violence erupts in Melbourne during protest against vaccine

MELBOURNE: Melbourne riot police used pepper spray, foam baton rounds and rubber ball grenades to disperse a violent protest against mandatory Covid-19 vaccinations for construction workers on Tuesday. More than 1,000 demonstrators wearing work boots and hi-vis jackets rampaged through the centre of Australia’s secondlargest city, lighting flares, throwing bottles, attacking police cars and chanting their opposition to vaccines and lockdown restrictions. Melbourne has been in strict lockdown for seven weeks, as the city struggles to curb an outbreak of the fast-spreading Delta variant. Several clusters have been linked to con-

struction sites, where Covid containment measures are said to be lax. In response, authorities have introduced ever-tougher restrictions, closing work site tea rooms, announcing mandatory vaccination for labourers and, most recently, closing almost all construction sites for two weeks. For hours protesters opposing the measures confronted police, ignoring loudspeaker calls to leave and a final caution that “no further warnings will be given”. Victoria state chief police commissioner Shane Patton said about 500 officers were responding to the “challenging” situation and had deployed pepper spray, foam baton rounds and rubber ball grenades. “These crowd control equipment munitions were necessary, and they are necessary, because we can’t allow this type of conduct to go on,” he said. “We will stop this protest. And we will then step back and investigate and hold those to account who need to be held to account.” At least three police officers had sustained injuries while more than 40 people had been arrested, Patton added. In General Assembly address, Erdogan urges settlement of Kashmir issue under UN resolutions

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday called for a solution to the decadesold Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan on the basis of the United Nations resolutions. Addressing the 76th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), he said in a wide-ranging speech to the 193-member assembly: “We maintain our stance in favour of solving the ongoing problem in Kashmir for 74 years, through dialogue between the parties and within the framework of relevant United Nations resolutions.” President Erdogan has consistently raised the Kashmir issue at the annual sessions of the UNGA. At the 75th session, the Turkish leader had said: “The Kashmir conflict, which is also key to the stability and peace in South Asia, is still a burning issue. Steps tak-

en following the abolition of the special status of [occupied] Jammu and Kashmir further complicated the problem.”His espousal of the Kashmir cause has evoked strong protests from India, which claims that Jammu and Kashmir is its “internal matter”. Meanwhile, Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai, secretary general of Washington-based advocacy group World Kashmir Awareness Forum, welcomed President Erdogan’s reference to the Kashmir issue, saying his words have given the Kashmiri people encouragement. President Erdogan’s message, he said, is aimed at the promotion of dialogue among all parties to the dispute. “This is the only means of achieving a genuine and lasting peace in this volatile conflict,” Fai said, adding that Kashmiri people have suffered too long. “They demand and they deserve peace,” he added. Over 100 world leaders are participating in the UNGA debate in person, with attendance in the assembly’s iconic hall scaled down as a precaution against the coronavirus pandemic. Prime Minister Imran Khan will address the assembly on September 24 (Friday) through a video-link. Source: dawn.com

As night falls, dogs bark in the background. But he is in no hurry to go to bed. He guards his house and family, embracing a gun, until morning. “Strangers wanted to get into my house. It is difficult to say who exactly it was. Even now, they shoot – I have no idea who is shooting whom,” he told Al Jazeera by phone.Last month, Afghan evacuee flights were halted as the country was thrown into chaos during the final stages of the Taliban’s takeover after US troops left. Flights have since resumed and, as a Ukrainian passport holder, 33-year-old Abdul can

leave the country. He, however, is stranded. In total, at least 70 Ukrainian citizens are in Afghanistan waiting to leave. Including their family members, this number rises to approximately 200. All have appealed directly to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy several times for help. Many have run out of money and their Ukrainian bank cards do not issue cash through Afghan ATMs. Most of the families hail from different provinces across the country but are temporarily renting homes in Kabul as they have been advised to wait for a flight out of the capital’s main airport. Abdul is one of about 10,000 Ukrainians with ancestry in Afghanistan. There have been two waves of Afghanistan-Ukraine migration – when the Soviet-backed leadership fell, and when the Taliban took power in the late 1990s. Abdul left Afghanistan 17 years ago because of violence in his home town, joining his father in Ukraine. His father later returned to Afghanistan, but disappeared. Source: aljazeera.com

The United Arab Emirates and India are seeking to more than double non-oil trade to at least $100 billion over five years as the Gulf Arab state works to deepen ties with fast-growing economies beyond the Middle East. The two governments are set to start talks on an economic pact aimed at boosting business, investment and jobs, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade Thani Al Zeyoudi said on a visit to New Delhi for talks with Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal. “Both sides have drawn up a very aggressive and ambitious time-frame and aim to conclude negotiations by December 2021,” Goyal said at a press conference on Wednesday. “We hope to sign formal agreements in early 2022.” The UAE is trying to burnish its credentials as a global hub for business and finance in the face of growing regional competition from Saudi Arabia. Earlier this month, the government said it plans to work on comprehensive economic agreements with countries showing high potential for growth, mainly in Asia and Africa. Last week, it said it plans to invest up to $14 billion in Britain. India is seeking better trade links to revive

its economy after a deadly second wave of the pandemic this year. The country is already the UAE’s second-largest trading partner, with around $40 billion in non-oil trade before the pandemic hit. The UAE says bilateral trade could reach up to $100 billion in the five years after the pact is agreed and Goyal said that target may be revised upwards. Indian nationals make up one of the largest population groups in the oil-rich UAE, a major source of foreign remittances. India is also an important market for UAE airlines Emirates and Etihad. On a political level, UAE royals helped broker talks between India and Pakistan earlier this year. Source: aljazeera.com

When the birds leave the nest

E

By: Asma Shums, very parent is going to go through a moment, when their kids are going to leave the home, grow up and might not need you as often. It can be very difficult for parents to watch their child grow up. It often seems like they go from cute little babies to moody teenagers to independent adults so quickly. Coping with your child growing up means preparing both of you for each new life stage along the way. It means holding on tight, yet also letting go bit by bit so that your child can become their own person. 1)You should keep a positive attitude despite your anxiety and sadness. A positive attitude towards your child’s growing up is essential. Think about what your child has learned and be proud of it, just as you were proud when they learned to walk independently or sleep alone. In the same way, try to appreciate your child’s growing abilities, such as going to school alone, finishing their homework without your help and making their own decisions. Instead of mourning because your

child is growing up, be proud of them and be proud of yourself, because you, with your support and love, have helped your baby grow into the child they are. 2)Allow your child to play independently before they go to school for the first time. The desire to hover over your child to guide and protect them is strong and hard to control. Often, the first independent step and challenge for parents and children is to let them play alone in the yard.Talk with your child and let them know what is allowed and what is not.Allow them to play, but watch and be ready to react. When you see that your child respects the agreement and behaves the way you expect, you can gradually relax and take a step back. 3) Fill the void in your schedule with something positive. Although you will surely still be plenty busy, you may feel like there is a void in your daily schedule with your child at school. Filling that gap with something gratifying for you will ease the transition and benefit you and your child in the long run. Even if you haven’t actually gained any new time by your child heading off to school, now can be a good time to take up a new hobby. This time feels like a new phase in your life because it is, and it is therefore a great time to improve yourself, expand your horizons, or try something you’ve always wanted to do.You will likely have ample opportunities to volunteer and otherwise be involved with your child’s school. This can provide a positive outlet and establish a new bond with your child. However, be wary of using such opportunities to continue “hovering” over your child. Even at this tender age, you have

to begin letting go bit by bit. 4)Address your own stress. Raising a child of any age is a stressful endeavor, but raising a teen may take the cake. While working to help them deal with their stress about the changes and challenges facing them, don’t forget about working to manage your own stress as well. If you don’t take care of yourself, you won’t be able to take care of them. Make a point to focus on getting sufficient sleep, eating properly, exercising regularly, finding time to relax, seeking out enjoyable activities, and embracing the support of a spouse, sibling, friend, etc. in addressing the stress you feel.Your child is watching you and learning from your example, even when they are a new teenager who seems intent on denying your very existence. Show them that taking care of one’s mind and body is essential. 5) Understand the concept of “empty nest syndrome”. You may think that you will be excited to have all the additional free time (and house space) that comes with your child moving out, only to find that you instead feel sad and adrift. Letting go, and adjusting afterward, are difficult to do, even when you know your child is ready. Acknowledge to yourself first that your child no longer needs your help on a day-to-day basis anymore. They may not prefer your company as much and you will not be privy to all the nuances of their life. This is normal and it’s normal to feel upset. As a mature parent, understand the changes that are taking place in your adult child’s life. Know that your child loves you and does not mean to be spiteful. It is normal to experience a feeling of loss at this time, even if you are lucky enough to still

Bullying is a power struggle that is difficult to resolve without the help of an adult. In most cases, it requires only a few minutes of intervention to stop, especially if adults act immediately and in a consistent manner. If you are present when bullying occurs, talk to those who are being aggressive. Explain the hurt they are causing and have them make amends to those who were harmed. This can break the cycle. Did you know... Set the example Always consider how you treat others and how you allow others to treat you. As a role model, your actions and reactions can influence how youth relate to each other.

trivial, such as name-calling. Youth usually go to adults with these problems only as a last resort. In a very small number of cases, bullying behaviour is a chronic problem requiring the involvement of families and the assistance of a health professional.

What else can you do?

Parents and guardians: Talk, talk, talk. Don’t wait for your child to come to you, bring up the conversation about bullying if you suspect or see/hear something. Talk to the adults who were in charge when the bullying occurred to find ways to remedy the problem and prevent future situations. If presented with the opportunity, confront If a young person tells you someone is the child, teen or group guilty of bullying

because consistency matters. Adults responsible for young people (such as teachers, principals, coaches and other leaders) Be aware of the social interactions in your group of children - separate youth who tend to have negative interactions with others. Place left-out youth in groups where they will be accepted - try to avoid situations that will victimize at-risk youth (for example, don’t have peers pick group partners or teams). Support other adults who work directly with youth to end bullying - by enforcing the separation of disruptive teens, increasing supervision in bullying hotspots and placing vulnerable youth in positive groups. How to Spend This Autumn Season friends or family.

Go to a pumpkin patch

3.

Corn maze

If you’re interested in bringing a pumpkin home, whether to roast the seeds or make a pie or whatever you’re into, there’s so much more variety when picking it yourself rather than from a store. Whether you decide to take one home or not, walking through the patch is fun way to spend some time with friends or family. Compare the sizes of the pumpkins, slip and fall in the mud (that one’s from personal experience) and just enjoy the cool weather before the snow arrives. By: Khadija Nadeem Gr 10

Visit a Haunted house

s we move into the fall season, haunted houses are starting to assemble and open up. Some people are natural thrill seekers and others… not so much but either way the rush of adrenaline you feel when you get scared will have you wanting to go back for more either with

If you’re not directionally challenged (unlike me) then you should definitely try your hand at a corn maze. Time yourself to see how quickly you can get out, or try to spend as much time in the maze as possible. While some mazes are designed to be difficult, others have the goal to be beautiful often designed to make some sort of pattern to attract

visits.

4.

Apple picking

There are a couple reasons to go apple picking. The first of them, and probably the most important, is that there’s no better way to ensure that the apples you’re bringing home are wax coating and preservatives free + there’s no exchange between other people’s hands and germs. Additionally, apple farms often have more than just apples. You’re sure to find jams and jellies, maybe petting zoos and sometimes even carnival rides.

5. Stay in and watch some movies

Not everything has to be done outside, especially here in ‘Raincouver’ when it isn’t always an option. I personally love making a cozy atmosphere inside and watching movies with friends or family. Some of my picks for this season are the following: The Dead Poets Society, Little Women and Monster House. Some of these are set in autumn while others just have that fall vibe you

look for. I would say Dead Poets Society is a good movie for teens to watch with their friends, an inspiring story about a teacher and his students. Little Women, again could be watched with friends or family and is a book adaptation about sisterhood. Monster House is a classic Halloween movie, one I watched almost every year as a kid. Spooky but with an interesting story, I’d recommend to anyone looking for a family movie.

My father’s story is woven into the exhibit. He passed away of cancer in December 2020 but his story is similar to that of most other Indo-Fijian’s who left Fiji in search for a new home. I use his items in the exhibit to bring our culture to life. While my dad was in the hospital I had the opportunity to finally discuss with him what I have been doing as an archaeologist for the past 20 years. I realized I should be studying my own heritage and culture now…my father’s heritage and culture. So I volunteered to make this exhibit. I will also be contributing a chapter to a book about the Social History of South Asians in BC being published by the University of the Fraser Valley - South Asian Studies Institute in early 2022. In the chapter I will be going

into more detail about the history of our people and the emergence of the indo-Fijian culture. It is important that our youth come to the exhibit and learn about the history of the Indo-Fijian people. The Muslim Girmitiya population was a minority of the 60,553 people who landed in Fiji. But only because of their resiliency and dedication to their Imaan is it that all the Indo-Fijian Muslim Brothers and Sisters can call ourselves Muslim today. Their men’s and women’s teams are due in Pakistan for short two-match T20 series next month. England’s men have not played an international in Pakistan since 2005 while the women are visiting for the first time. “There isn’t much hope that England will tour now,” said the official. Former England captain Michael Vaughan hoped security issues would be resolved in Pakistan.“Such a shame for Pakistan cricket. These late call offs will damage the game hugely financially. Hopefully security issues can be resolved to allow cricket to be played again in Pakistan,” Vaughan wrote on Twitter.West Indies’ two-time T20 World Cupwinning captain Darren Sammy also voiced his disappointment over the abrupt cancellation of the series.

Pakistan all-rounder Shadab Khan termed it as “heartbreaking” while batsman Fakhar Zaman tweeted: “extraordinary security has been provided to the New Zealand team”. New Zealand, minus several frontline players, had arrived in Pakistan at the weekend with a level of security usually reserved for visiting heads of state that included armed guards escorting their bulletproof buses. Their Islamabad hotel, some 10 kilometres from the Rawalpindi stadium where they were due to play, has been guarded by a heavy paramilitary and police contingent. Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar pointed out that the Pakistan has safely hosted South Africa, Bangladesh, West Indies, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in recent years. “We will rise from this. And soon... Not the first time we’ve been pushed against the wall. Unnecessary and uncalled for decision by Blackcaps,” he wrote on social media. He also referenced Pakistan’s tour of New Zealand at the end of last year “in the worst

Pakistan cricket set to incur huge financial, reputational losses

AHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board will suffer financial losses in millions as a result of New Zealand abruptly calling off their tour just before the first of three Oneday Internationals was to begin in Rawalpindi due to a security threat on Friday. “Apart from the security losses,” a PCB official told Dawn on the condition of anonymity, “this is a blow to the efforts the PCB, the government and the security agencies who had been making to fully restore international cricket in Pakistan.” The three ODIs were due to be followed by five Twenty20 Internationals in Lahore and the official said that even raising the issue against New Zealand Cricket at t he International Cricket Council would be of no help. “The ICC has done nothing in these cases,” the official added. “Furthermore since the Indian lobby is strong at the ICC, so it will not be easy for the PCB to win any case of compensation against New Zealand.” New Zealand were touring Pakistan for the

of Covid circumstances regardless of the crude treatment by NZ authorities on that tour.” However, former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie said it wasn’t right to criticise New Zealand. “New Zealand Cricket would not have made the decision to end their tour of Pakistan lightly — they have shown time and again that they are willing to do their part to promote and play our great game so I don’t think it’s right to be critical of them,” Gillespie wrote on Twitter.......Source:-aljazeera.com

Surrey Jamea Masjid and CMMC hold Election Candidates debate

On Sep 18, The Surrey Jamea Masjid management and the Canadian Muslim Media Club(CMMC) organized a debate between federal election candidates debate in the Masjid’s multipurpose hall. This debate program was the first joint venture of CMMC with the Masjid to facilitate and to bring all political parties and the community together on one stage to face questions from the public about their party’s plans and priorities so they can make an informed decision at the polls. Candidates from all parties were invited but among the attendees were four current MPs from Liberal Party Mr. Sukh Dhaliwal (Surrey-Newton), Mr. Randeep Saari (Surrey Centre), Mr. Ken Hardie (Fleetwood-Port Kells) and former MLA Gordie Hogg (S.Surrey-White Rock), two contenders from NDP, Mr. Avneet Johal (Surrey-Newton) and Ms. Sonia Andhi (Surrey Centre) and one independent candidate Ms. Perveer Hundal (SurreyNewton). While the Conservative and Green Party candidates were also invited, none of them attended the debate. About one hundred people attended this debate and it was a good show of numbers considering the COVID-19 restrictions in place. Mr. Asad Gondal was the MC for the first round of introduction. He called each candidate at the podium to speak about their Party policy. After that Mr. Furqan Ghelen carried the Q/A session till the end. The moderator posed questions to all candidates or the party’s spokesperson.

The questions had been submitted by people attending the forum. In this debate, voters raised many issues they are facing. The debate continued for an hour between Asar to Maghrib Prayer in a friendly and engaging atmosphere. Due to the limited time, many questions from the Media and the audience were not asked. The event was broadcasted on social media through live broadcast and programs through the platforms of CMMC members including The Miracle Media Group, Sohni Dharti of Pakistan, Vancouver with Naveed Warraich as well as the Surrey Jamea Masjid Facebook. Other media outlets were also present including Dil Apna Pakistan, Overseas View with Raht Rao and Al-Ameen Post.

PICS Society unveils Picture/Plaque to honour Founder and Founding CEO Mr. Charanpal Gill SURREY – Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS) Society celebrated its 34th anniversary by honouring the Late Mr. Charanpal Singh Gill, the “Founder and Founding CEO” of PICS Society (1987 – 2017), by unveiling a picture/plaque in his honour within the PICS Head Office. Mayor Doug McCallum unveiled the picture/plaque in the presence of local MLAs, PICS Board members, staff and management, media and other guests. Some of the founding members and founding Board members of PICS were also present at the ceremony. The Mayor acknowledged Mr. Gill’s lifelong accomplishments, dedication, hard work and vision over the years.

In September 1987, Mr. Gill got together with a few friends and decided to start an organization to support and help new immigrants. They collected $80 to register the society. It was Mr. Gill’s vision, tireless work and able leadership that developed PICS into a major community organization in the Lower Mainland, offering multiple programs and services to the community, including language and settlement services, employment programs, housing for seniors, second stage transition home for immigrant women, and many other programs. He was able to take the organization from $80 in 1987 to $8 million in 2017 when he retired.

Speaking at the ceremony, PICS President and CEO, Satbir Cheema said, “Mr. Gill, devoted his entire life to work for the betterment of the community and he firmly believed in people’s democratic rights to live a happy, healthy and prosperous life. He was a mentor, coach, role model, and leader for our generation, and we used to fondly call him ‘Bhaji’ and later on named him ‘The Living Legend’. It was indeed our privilege and honour to have worked with him.” Serving the Lower Mainland since 1987, PICS has more than 221 employees across 7 locations and will continue in its vision to build a healthy and just society which values and respects all cultures.

Surrey Jamea Bazaar 2021 organized by Surrey Delta Women Chapter

On Sep 19, Jamea Bazar 2021 was arranged by the Surrey Delta Women’s branch in the underground parking of the Surrey Jamea Masjid. It was well organized and followed strict COVID-19 safety measures including mandatory masks. Many families visited the bazar and bought picked up the chicken pulao and pop while visiting stalls from various vendors selling women and kids clothing, Abayas, Jewelry, Handmade Crafts, Books, Food, and much more. Money raised by the food sales, and stall bookings was donated to Surrey Jamea Masjid making the event a great success for the Surey-Delta Women Chapter.
