‘I regret it,’ Trudeau says of travel to Tofino on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
O
TTAWA -- Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says travelling to Tofino, B.C. for a vacation on the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation was a “mistake” and he’s focused on making amends. During an announcement on Wednesday, Trudeau addressed the controversy that drew criticism from politicians and Indigenous leaders last week.“Travelling on September 30th was a mistake, and I regret it. The first National Day of Truth and Reconciliation was a time for Indigenous people and non-Indigenous people alike to reflect and connect, think about the past but also focus on the future,” he said. “There’s a lot of work for us all to do and I’m committed to doing it.”
Trudeau said he looks forward to visiting the Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc, which invited the prime minister twice to events last Thursday in recognition of the day. Despite a public itinerary that noted that Trudeau was in “private meetings” in Ottawa, his office later confirmed he had travelled to the West Coast to spend time with his family. “I want to thank Chief Casimir of Tk’emlúps for the conversation we had over the weekend, which I apologized for not being there with her and her community,” he said Wednesday. The prime minister did participate in a ceremony the night prior and on Thursday he posted on Twitter that he spent time speaking on the phone with residential school survivors, getTo be Continued at page 3
Critics accuse B.C. government of passing the buck on school vaccination mandates
V
ANCOUVER - The B.C. government has formed a committee that will advise individual school boards on how they can bring in vaccine mandates for teachers and other school staff in their districts. But critics say it should be a province-wide mandate. “They’re asking the boards to do it. Well that’s just, in my opinion, an abdication of responsibility: ‘If I pass the buck to the school boards, the public will leave me alone,’” said Victoria teacher Elizabete Costa.Surrey teacher Lizanne Foster argues the district-by-district approach doesn’t make sense. “We’ve got 60 school districts. Are 60 school districts now going to one-by-one go through some pro-
cess to determine whether and how they’re going to mandate vaccines?” Foster said. Both Costa and Foster are worried by leaving it up to individual school boards, there will be a patchwork of vaccine mandates across the province. “And what’s the government going to do with boards that don’t want to impose that mandate, don’t want to have the discussion, and don’t want the pushback from some parents in the community that don’t believe in vaccines?” said Costa. Foster said while she feels confident the Surrey School District’s approach, “I know other teachers across the province are in districts that may not be comfortable with the district To be Continued at page 3
At least 20 killed as 5.9-magnitude earthquake rocks parts of Balochistan
A
n earthquake of magnitude 5.9 struck parts of Balochistan early on Thursday morning, killing at least 20 people and injuring over 300 others, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said. According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre, the earthquake was centred near the province’s Harnai district and had a depth of 15 kilometres. It added the quake had a longitude of 67.96 east and a latitude of 30.08 north. Tremors were felt in Quetta, Sibbi, Pishin, Muslim Bagh, Ziarat, Qila Abdullah, Sanjavi, Zhob and Chaman, the PDMA said in its initial report. It further said the “exact damage” has not
yet been confirmed. The death toll was also confirmed by Deputy Commissioner of Harnai District Sohail Anwar Hashmi. He said six children were also among the deceased. The injured, which include women and children, have been shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital in Harnai, he said. Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Kamal Khan Alyani shared that assistance and evacuation efforts were under way. “Blood, ambulances, emergency assistance, [helicopters] and rest all things are placed ... All departments are working on it,” he tweeted. Security forces also reached the district for rescue and relief efforts, the Inter-Services Public Relations

PM Trudeau acknowledged and then apologized for The first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
By: Khadija Nadeem
Miracle’s editorial board member s the Liberal Party enters their third consecutive term with Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister, it’s time to take a closer look at not only their recent and previous promises but also at how they’ve kept (or not kept) to them. Now, in a competitive election, it’s not uncommon for political parties to make big promises to the public when trying to win government. Nevertheless, it can be very harmful to a politician’s reputation and the country’s wellbeing when citizens expect certain promises to be kept and no intention to keep them exists. Our government has made many claims and promises but safe to say, even more mistakes. It’s expected, even, of leaders to fumble, especially when everything is magnified under the public eye. So when Trudeau forgot to mention Alberta in his Canada Day speech in 2017, no one paid too much attention but, when he dug Canada into deeper debt than he promised over the last 5 years, people definitely noticed. Ordinarily, spending money on the country is great and all, but if a leader does the opposite of what he’s promised, there has to be a point where their leadership is called into question. An older, more recognizable incident was of the Japanese steamship Komagata Maru. A group of people from, then known as, British India tried to immigrate to Canada in 1914 but were denied passage on Canadian land. Of the 376 passengers, only 24 were admitted to Canada. 27 of these passen-
A
gers were Muslim and upon returning home, the passengers were confronted by police and as a riot ensued, the result was the deaths of 20 people. This mistake was apologized for by Trudeau’s government only in 2016 but by acknowledging it, a path was paved for change and diversity in Canada. This was an example of where a large mistake made, was paid for by little consequence on the government’s part. But in present times, mistakes made by government officials are under direct spotlight, leaving them with nowhere to hide. A clear and memorable reminder is the events leading up to Andrew Scheer’s, the Conservative Party Leader up until 2019, resignation. After it was revealed that Scheer was using party funds to pay for his kids’ private schooling, his resignation was immediately called for and now, his name is barely mentioned in the political field. These are all examples of the government or its members making mistakes and holding themselves accountable. If we wanted to compare these instances to how politics work in Pakistan, politicians often openly make mistakes and then harden and refuse to admit them. Accountability is an important part of our democratic system and holding the people in charge accountable for their actions teaches hard lessons for those by their side, those who look up to them, and obviously the person themself. Moving forward, of course there are occasions where politicians are not held accountable for their mistakes or grievances. We could look at
Trudeau’s big promise of ending fossil fuel subsidies but then immediately after coming out with a budget plan that included nothing of the sort. Or the Trans Mountain Pipeline due to be finished in 2022 that was heavily protested, if we’re staying on the topic of environmental blunders. One of the biggest things to look forward to on Trudeau’s platform in 2015 was his promise of electoral reform. Currently, Canada uses the first-past-thepost system. This means that whichever candidate gets the most votes in their constituency, wins a seat in parliament. Which horse wins the race? The one who’s first past the finish post. This means that even if voter percentage leans to one party more, a different party could win more seats and therefore win government. Consequently, this democratic system was and still is an unfair representation of the country’s political preference so when Trudeau promised reform, citizens were eagerly anticipating change. That is, until Trudeau dropped the entire idea and decided things were going to stay the exact same way they were. The point of these examples is not to shed light on every time a politician has made a mistake but simply to be a model for how getting stuck in a cycle of political promises can be harmful. Trudeau has done plenty for not only the Muslim community but Canadians all over the country, but again, at some point, we need to be critical of a leader’s ability to keep promises and deliver on concerns shared across the nation. The most recent of examples is the Day of Truth and Rec-
onciliation which was created through a law proposed by the Liberal government this June. Indigenous Chief Rosanne Casimir said that her Nation (Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc) had written twice to Trudeau to invite him to join them in marking Canada’s first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Trudeau had attended a ceremony in Ottawa the previous Wednesday night and he spoke with 8 residential school survivors the following Thursday but his Office confirmed that he was spending several days in Tofino on vacation with his family, including the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc Nation is near the site of the former Kamloops residential school where about 200 unmarked graves were discovered. On October 2nd, two days later, PM Trudeau acknowledged and then apologized for not following up on the invitations. In a system that keeps the same leader, the same patterns in accountability, and the same habits on delivery on a pedestal, we need to decide if we’re content with the way things are. Admittedly, Trudeau is great for international PR and his competency is preferable to that of other candidates in and out of Canada. His candidacy is appreciated across the nation and his ability to apologize for mistakes is certainly admirable but for how much longer can that make up for his government’s lack of responsibility? That is what Canadians need to ask themselves. Waan Laysa Lil Insana illa ma’ sa’aa That man can have nothing but what he strives for.

on the very first national day when we’re supposed to be spending the [time] doing the duty of reconciliation,” she said. Asked in French on Wednesday what he makes of the fact that the controversy around the timing of his vacation diverted attention away from the importance of the day, Trudeau said he assumes responsibility to “do better” in the future. “We will continue to do even more on the path of reconciliation, whether it’s continuing to eliminate longterm boil water advisories, whether it’s making sure there’s better investments in housing and support for kids going to new a better schools across the country,” he said. Lynne Groulx, CEO of the Native Women’s Associa-
tion of Canada, thanked the prime minister in a statement published Wednesday but questioned the sincerity of his apology. “Sadly, we recognize that this moment of contrition comes after much public pressure, not necessarily because you have suddenly seen the light. It will now be up to you to rebuild trust with our communities,” the statement reads. “But we must move forward. There is still so much work to do on reconciliation. You could start, Prime Minister, by taking the genocide of Indigenous women in Canada seriously. You could start by implementing the Calls for Justice of the Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls today.” Source: ctvnews.ca

ting their advice on “meaningful” reconciliation. Parliament passed a bill last June to recognize a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation each Sept. 30. It is a statutory holiday for federal workers but the government has stressed it should be a day for reflection. In an interview on CTV’s Question Period on Sunday, Cindy Blackstock, the executive director of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society, said Trudeau’s trip was a “complete letdown.” “The prime minister decides that he can have a vacation day – he could have had the vacation day [Friday]. 12Th Rabi Ul Awwal demise Or The Birth Of Prophet Muhammad
T
his is an English translation of an Urdu sermon delivered by his eminence, Hazrat Allama-Wa-Maulana Peer Syed Imroz Dean Naqshbandi, Masjid Anwaar E Madina Surrey BC. Translated by Talib e Ilm Afzal Khan Saifi Anwaar-E-Madina Publications First Published 2021 If there is an inaccurate translation, please pardon it and not let it be a means to negatively reflect on the honoured presenter. Few Other Faith Scholars Conspiracy Theory: 12th Rabi Ul Awwal is the demise of Prophet Muhammad(saw)and not the birth of Prophet Muhammad (saw)
Was the demise of Rasool actually on 12th Rabi Ul Awwal?
No! This is deceptive. It is a fallacious argument by the deviants to stop the ummah from celebrating the milad of Rasool(saw). Sahaaba-e-kraam, Taba’een, Mufassireen, Muhaddiseen, all agree that 12th Rabi Ul Awwal is NOT the demise of Prophet Muhammad(saw), but is the birth of Huzoor(saw). In 235 Hijri, Imam Abu Bakr Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Abi Shaybah record in their book that Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah and Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas(Radi Allaahu Anhum), the two companions (Sahaaba) of Rasool narrate that the birth of Rasool(saw).was on Monday, the 12th of Rabi Ul Awwal. Taking into consideration the narration of these two esteemed companions; if some looters of imaan claim that the birth of Huzoor is not on 12th of Rabi Ul Awwal, and then this is totally unacceptable. In ‘Dalal e Nabuwwah Shareef’, Imam Abu Bakr Ahmad bin Al Husayn Al Bayhaqi (Rahamatullah Alaih) writes that Prophet(saw) was born on Monday, 12th of Rabi Ul Awwal. In ‘Sharah Bukhari’, Imam Ahmad Qastalaani(Rahmatullah Alaih) writes that the mostaccepted belief is that Huzoor(saw) was born on Monday, 12th of Rabi Ul Awwal. And all the Ahle Mecca, before and after acknowledges this. In 150 Hijri, Imam bin Is’haac Taabi writes in ‘Al Bidaya Wan Nihaya’ that Prophet(saw) was born on Monday, 12th of Rabi Ul Awwal. Imam Abu Jafar Muhammad bin Jarir Al Tabri(Rahmatullah Alaih) mentions in ‘Taareekhe Tabri’ that Prophet Muhammad(saw) was born on Monday, 12th of Rabi Ul Awwal. Philosopher in history Allama Ibn Khuldoon(RA)also writes in ‘Taareekh Ibn Khuldoon’ that the birth of Rasool is Monday, 12th of Rabi Ul Awwal. Hazrat Shah Abdul Haq Muhaadith Dehlvi(Rahamatullah Alaih) in his book ‘Madarij un Nabuwat’ writes that Prophet(saw) was born on Monday, 12th Rabi Ul Awwal. He further writes that Ahle Islam collectively agrees that Prophet(saw) was born on Monday, 12th of Rabi Ul Awwal. Deobandi pioneer, Ashraf Ali Thanvi in his book ‘Nashrut-teeb’ writes that Prophet Muhammad(saw) was born on either 8th or 12th of Rabi Ul Awwal. And he also writes that the demise of Prophet Muhammad(saw) was NOT on 12th Rabi Ul Awwal.
And nondenominational Muslim (gair muqallid), Ahle Hadith, Nawab Siddiq Hassan Khan Bhopali in his book ‘Ashshamaamatul Ambariya mim Mauloodil Khairil Bariyyah’ also writes that the birth of Prophet Muhammad(saw) was in Mecca Shareef, before Fajr, Monday, 12th of Rabi Ul Awwal. And vast majority (jamhoor ulma) of the three noblest era of Islam (Sahaaba, Ta’abieen, Tab-e-Ta’abieen) accept this. Ibne Joshi(Rahamatullah Alaih) has accepted and narrated this. It is of paramount importance to note that the Deobandi and Ahle Hadith pioneers have accepted and recorded that 12th Rabi Ul Awwal is the birth of Prophet(saw) and Not the demise of Huzoor(saw) The teachings of these fraudulent so called scholars are misguiding the ummah, that 12th Rabi Ul Awwal is the demise of Huzoor, and Milad Un Nabi(saw) should not be celebrated on this day. This is fraud, deception and a lie. These tricksters very stylishly pester and try to misguide the simple Sunnis of The Ahle Sunnah by such deceptive teachings. In some books of seerat, it is written that the demise of Prophet(saw) was on 12th Rabi Ul Awwal, but in the view of lawful Islamic scholars, there is no evidence to such claims. Even the Deobandi pioneer, Ashraf Ali Thanvi in his book ‘Nashrutdeeb’ writes that 12th Rabi Ul Awwal as the demise of Prophet(saw) is not verified and not authentic. You may now become curious as to which day was the demise of Huzoor. In 581 Hijri, a great biographist Imam Abdul Kasim Abdul Rahman bin Abdullah Suheli(Rahmatullah Alaih) wrote that under no circumstance the demise of Prophet(saw) could be on 12th Rabi Ul Awwal. He states that as a matter of fact, everyone accepts that the demise of Prophet(saw) was on Monday, in Rabi Ul Awwal, 11th Hijri. For 10th Hijri, the farewell Hajj (Hajjatul Wida) happened on Friday. So, for 10th Hijri, 1st Dhu’l Hijjah falls on Thursday. Take for instance all the three months before Rabi Ul Awwal (Dhu’l Hijjah, Muharram, and Safar) to be 30 days or 29 days, still 12th Rabi Ul Awwal cannot be on Monday. For example; If all the three months before Rabi Ul Awwal were of 30 days, then Monday will be 6th Rabi Ul Awwal. If all the three months before Rabi Ul Awwal were of 29 days, then Monday will be 2nd Rabi Ul Awwal. If Dhu’l Hijjah and Muharram were of 30 days and Safar was of 29 days, then Monday is 7th Rabi Ul Awwal. If Dhu’l Hijja and Muharram were of 29 days and Safar was of 30 days, then Monday is 1st Rabi Ul Awwal.
6th and 7th Rabi UL Awwal does not have any significance. So, the demise of Prophet(saw) is either 2nd or 1st Rabi Ul Awwal. Imam Bayhaqi(Rahamatullah Alaih) in his book ‘Dalal e Nabuwwah Shareef’ writes that the demise of Huzoor was on Monday, 2nd of Rabi Ul Awwal. Imam Ibne Asaakir writes that the demise of Huzoor was Monday 1st Rabi Ul Awwal. Haafiz Ibne Kathir, in his book ‘Al-Bidaya Wa’l Nihaya’ writes that the demise of Huzoor was on 2nd Rabi Ul Awwal. Allama Abdul Kasim Suheli(Rahmatullah Alaih) states that the demise of Huzoor was 1st Rabi Ul Awwal. Shibli Nomani writes that it is totally impossible for 12th Rabi Ul Awwal to be on Monday. In his view, the demise of Huzoor is 1st Rabi Ul Awwal. Consequently, with all the facts and argu-
ments presented, it is authenticated that 12th Rabi Ul Awwal is NOT the demise of Prophet(saw) ,but it is 2nd Rabi Ul Awwal. Allah Tabarak Wa Ta’ala states in The Holy Quran: “And Remember Allah’s Favour Upon You And The Covenant Which He Made With You, When You Said: ‘We Heard And Obeyed And Fear Allah. Indeed, Allah Knows The Thoughts In Your Hearts.” (Surah AL-Ma’ida. verse 7) The coming of Sayiduna RasoolAllah(saw) is the greatest favour (blessings) of Allah Subhanu Ta’ala. Milad Shareef remembers this; therefore, holding gatherings of Milad Shareef is acting upon this ayat. “And Publicize Well The Bounty Of Your Lord.” (Surah Adh-Dhuha. verse 11) The Holy Prophet’s(saw) coming to this world is the greatest of all Divine favours and Allah Subhanu Ta’ala has reminded us of this. This, to publicize it (Milad Shareef) is practising upon the instruction of this verse. expressing joy on the blessings of Allah Ta’ala is a divine instruction The Prophet(saw)was asked about fasting on Monday. He explained: ‘I was born on that day and revelation (of The Holy Quran) also began on it.

The Importance of Loving the Prophet Muhammad (saw)
‘T
he Prophet is closer to the believers than their own selves’. (Qur’an, 33:6) The month of Rabi’-ul-Awwal is a good time to remind ourselves of the place of the Prophet (saw) in our lives. He is the best of creation, and he should be dearer to us than any place or person, including ourselves. If we do not feel this closeness to the Prophet (saw), the solution is simple: learn more about his character and his life, and naturally our love for him will grow. This Rabi’-ul-Awwal, why not begin reading the Seerah (the Prophet’s (saw) biography) so you can learn more about the best of creation? It is also a good idea to start following Prophetic habits, such as visiting the sick and elderly, smiling often, and feeding the poor. Take this chance to revive or strengthen your connection with the Prophet (saw) and his Sunnah.”
Event Two: The Hijrah of the Prophet Muhammad (saw)
The Prophet (saw) and his Companion, Abu Bakr (ra), also emigrated from Makkah to Yathrib during Rabi’-ul-Awwal. This event is known as the Hijrah, and we date the Islamic calendar from it. So, the first year they spent in Madinah was the first Islamic year, the second year was the second Islamic year, and on. The Islamic year is denoted by ‘AH’, which stands for ‘After Hijrah’. We are currently in the year 1441 AH. Umar (ra) said, ‘The Hijrah has separated truth from falsehood, so calculate dates from it’. (Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani) The Hijrah marked the beginning of a new chapter for the Muslims. The Prophet (saw) united the tribes of Yathrib, guiding them with justice, wisdom and mercy. The city of Yathrib became known as ‘Madinah al-Munawarah’, the Illuminated City, and is now commonly called Madinah. Source: muslimhands.org.uk

Feds make vaccines mandatory for public servants, domestic travellers
OTTAWA -- “Core” federal public servants will have to attest to being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by Oct. 29 or face being put on leave without pay by Nov. 15. And, anyone who wants to board a plane or train in Canada will have to prove they’re vaccinated by Oct. 30 with “limited exemptions,” the federal government has announced. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland outlined the details of the new COVID-19 vaccine mandates on Wednesday. “This is about keeping people safe on the job and in our communities,” Trudeau said. “If you’ve done the right thing and gotten vaccinated, you deserve the freedom to be safe from COVID-19, to have your kids safe from COVID, to get back to the things you love.” For the approximately 267,000 federal workers that fall under this new policy, it’ll
be applicable whether employees work remotely or from the office, as well as if they work outside of Canada. The plan differentiates between those who are unable to be fully vaccinated, and those who are unwilling to be vaccinated. There will be exemptions made for “certified medical contraindications,” as well as for religious reasons. Though, these accommodations will only be granted under certain parameters, including providing documented medical proof of the requirement for the exemption or testifying under oath to their religious beliefs, according to senior government officials that briefed reporters on the policy on a not-for-attribution basis, ahead of the announcement. In addition to being put on unpaid leave, employees who do not attest to their vaccination status, or attest that they are unvaccinated, will be required to take an online training session on COVID-19 vaccines. They will also not be able to access their workplace or any off-site events or meetings. Travel for business, including to attend conferences, will also be prohibited. These work-related measures will also be imposed on partially-vaccinated workers, though they will have up to 10 weeks to receive their second dose before being put on unpaid leave. Army huddle takes serious note of Indian army’s ‘malicious propaganda’, resolves to take measures The Pakistan Army’s top brass on Tuesday expressed the resolve to take necessary measures to safeguard Pakistan’s territorial integrity in the face of “malicious propaganda” by the Indian military, the army’s media wing said. The resolution in this regard was expressed during the 244th Corps Commanders Conference chaired by Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa at the GHQ. The commanders undertook a comprehensive review of the evolving security situation in the region, with a particular focus on border management and internal security, according to an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement. The forum was apprised of the measures being taken to “thwart nefarious designs of inimical forces to destabilise Pakistan and spoil the hard-earned peace and stability”, the press release said.
FIA action sought over fake Covid vaccination entries made under Kulsoom Nawaz’s and Ishaq Dar’s names
The Punjab Primary and Secondary Healthcare Department has moved the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to take action over fake entries made under the names of Kulsoom Nawaz, late wife of PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif, and former finance minister Ishaq Dar in the National Immunisation Management System (Nims) — the government’s online portal for the issuance of vaccination certificates. In a letter sent to the FIA on Wednesday, a copy of which is available with Dawn.com, the Primary and Secondary Healthcare Department informed the agency that the fake entry for the administration of a PakVac vaccine dose was made under the name of Kulsoom Nawaz from Gymnasium Mailsi, which serves as a vaccination centre in Vehari, on October 5. Another fake entry, for the first dose of the Cansino vaccine, was made under Dar’s name the same day from the vaccination centre at the office
of the Defence Housing Authority’s chief executive officer in Multan, the letter stated.“It is hereby requested to kindly investigate and take necessary action against the fake entry on the name of Kulsoom Nawaz Sharif and Muhammad Ishaq Dar in the National Immunisation Management System,” it added. Confirming these details, Primary and Secondary Healthcare Department Secretary Imran Sikandar Baloch told Dawn. com that the department’s Health Information and Service Delivery Unit had immediately identified the fake entries after they were reported by the media. He added that the department had also made recommendations to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) — the nerve centre of Pakistan’s virus response — for preventing fake entries in Nims, and measures were being taken to improve the data entry system. The secretary assured that he was personally looking into the matter of fake entries, and “there is no place in my department for individuals involved in such activities [as making fake entries].” The recent incident of fake entries has surfaced days after another one was made in Nims on the name of Nawaz. National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif on the appointment of the next National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman as three cabinet members issued conflicting statements on the matter. Hours after Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry told mediapersons during his post-cabinet meeting press conference that it had been decided that Prime Minister Imran Khan would not consult Shehbaz Sharif on the appointment of the new chief of the anti-graft watchdog and an ordinance would be promulgated on Wednesday (today) to allow incumbent NAB Chairman retired Justice Javed Iqbal to continue in office till his successor was appointed, Law Minister Farogh Naseem announced in a television show that Prime Minister Khan would consult the opposition leader on the matter. “Although there is a conflict of interest if Shehbaz Sharif, who is facing NAB cases, holds
consultation, it’s up to him now whether he thinks he should consult the prime minister or not on the matter,” the law minister said. He said earlier it was suggested that Mr Sharif should not be consulted, but later the government felt that the opposition would term it one-sided if he (Mr Sharif) was not allowed to hold consultations. The minister said the name of Javed Iqbal was also being considered as the new chairman of the bureau. He said under the new ordinance, trial courts (accountability courts) would be empowered to grant or reject bails..S.dawn.com
These Canadian industries are currently facing the biggest labour shortages
TORONTO -- The economic effects from the COVID-19 pandemic are squeezing businesses struggling to find workers as ongoing labour shortages continue to stall certain sectors. Businesses both big and small say they are struggling to find staff and employers have been offering more incentives to attract workers such as higher wages, bonuses, and flexible hours. However, for those industries trying to recoup losses after months of lockdown, Jasmin Guenette of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business says perks may not be an option. Only 40 per cent of small businesses are making normal sales at the moment. So increasing wage is not something that is possible for many businesses,” Guenette previously told CTV News. New research published last week from the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) reports that 64 per cent of Canadian businesses say labour shortages are limiting their growth. According to Statistics Canada, there were 731,900 job vacancies in the
second quarter of 2021. StatCan said these vacancies can be seen across all provinces, with the largest increases in Quebec, Ontario and B.C. Overall, Deloitte Canada says that 30.3 per cent of Canadian businesses are reporting labour shortages. Trevin Stratton, economic advisory leader and partner at Deloitte Canada, told CTVNews.ca the sectors that have been able to shift to a work-fromhome model, such as finance, insurance and real estate, have seen “substantial job growth” throughout the pandemic. ......Source: .ctvnews.ca
While taking serious note of the “malicious propaganda by Indian military”, the meeting expressed the resolve to take all necessary measures to protect Pakistan’s territorial integrity. “The baseless propaganda only reflects their frustration and an attempt to divert attention from their internal contradictions especially gross human rights violations being committed in [Indian-occupied Kashmir],” Gen Bajwa remarked Source: dawn.com

OTTAWA -- Federal Liberals say they’ve picked up another seat in Quebec after a judicial recount. They say incumbent Brenda Shanahan will be returning to Parliament after the recount declared her the winner in Chateauguay-Lacolle over her Bloc Quebecois rival by just 12 votes. That overturns preliminary results from the Sept. 20 election, which had Shanahan losing to the Bloc’s Patrick O’Hara by 286 votes The recount bumps up the total number of seats won by Justin Trudeau’s Liberals to 160, although the winner in one of them -- Kevin
Vuong in Toronto’s Spadina-Fort York -- will be sitting as an Independent MP after failing to disclose to the party a past sexual assault charge that was ultimately dropped. It boosts the Liberal seat tally in Quebec to 35, the same as the party won in 2019; the Bloc emerges with 32 seats, also unchanged from 2019. The election returned Trudeau’s Liberals with a minority government, 10 seats short of the 170 needed for a majority.. Source: bc.ctvnews.ca

British PM’s envoy holds talks with Taliban in Afghanistan
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s special envoy has held talks with senior members of Afghanistan’s new Taliban government in Kabul, officials said. Senior civil servant Simon Gass met Deputy Prime Ministers Abdul Ghani Baradar and Abdul Salam Hanafi on Tuesday, the British foreign office said.
Is press freedom dead in Afghanistan?
Medics overwhelmed as Afghanistan healthcare crumbles They discussed how the United Kingdom could help Afghanistan address a deepening humanitarian crisis, “terrorism” and the need for safe passage for those who want to leave the country. “They also raised the treatment of minorities and the rights of women and girls,” a British government spokesman said.
Saudi Aramco soars to $2 trillion on sky-high oil prices
“The [UK] government continues to do all it can to ensure safe passage for those who wish to leave, and is committed to supporting the people of Afghanistan.”Gass was accompanied by the charge d’affaires of the UK Mission to Afghanistan in Doha. Abdul Qahar Balkhi, the Taliban’s foreign ministry spokesman, said the meeting “focused on detailed discussions about reviving diplomatic relations between both countries”.He added that Afghanistan’s foreign minister wanted the UK to “begin a new chapter of constructive relations”. Al Jazeera’s Stefanie Dekker, reporting from Kabul, said the visit is “significant” because there is now an “open line of communication” between the UK and the Taliban. “I think this is what the international community is doing, it’s using this fact of international recognition of the Taliban as the legal official governing body of this country, to try and put pressure on the group to adhere to certain norms that they’d like to see,” Dekker said. “We are in a time when the Taliban is seeking this international legitimacy, they need the millions … of dollars in funds to help get this country forward,” she added, citing Afghanistan’s dire economic situation, and concerns about drought and famine. Saudi Arabia’s oil company Aramco reached a $2 trillion valuation as it hit near-record levels Wednesday during trading hours. Its market capitalisation value put Aramco just behind Microsoft and Apple as the world’s most valuable companies. Aramco reached the milestone as crude oil prices climb to more than $82 a barrel, the highest in seven years. Aramco is mostly owned by the government of Saudi Arabia, with just less than 2 percent of the company publicly listed on the Saudi Tadawul stock exchange. Aramco was trading at about 37.6 riyals a share, or a few cents more than $10 a share, by midday Wednesday before dipping to 37.2 riyals a share, or about $9.92 a share. It remains to be seen whether it can hold this rally until
trading closes. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was the architect behind the effort to publicly list a sliver of Aramco in late 2019, touting it as a way to raise capital for the kingdom’s sovereign wealth fund to then develop new cities and mega-projects across the country that create needed private-sector jobs for young Saudis. The crown prince has long sought the mammoth $2 trillion valuation for Aramco. Despite fluctuations in Aramco’s yearly earnings, the company has stuck to its promise to pay an annual dividend of $75bn until 2024 to shareholders, the biggest of which is the government. Aramco produces the kingdom’s vast oil and gas products and receives directives on supply production each month from the Energy Ministry of Saudi Arabia, OPEC’s linchpin nation. The oil carter and other allied major oil producers this week are maintaining a gradual approach to restoring production levels that had been slashed during the pandemic, agreeing to add only 400,000 barrels per day (bpd) in November. Demand for oil is forecast to hit 99 million bpd by the end of the year, and a little more than 100 million bpd next year. Source: aljazeera.com

Gaza City – Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip called for the scrapping of an agreement between the US and the United Nation’s agency for Palestinian refugees, saying the deal violates many of their rights. Dozens of people protested in front of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees’ (UNRWA) headquarters on Tuesday, calling for an end to The Framework for Cooperation — a two-year working plan signed between the US State Department and UNRWA. They chanted slogans saying the framework “cancels the rights of return for refugees”. Protesters also held banners reading: “We totally reject the agreement between the US and UNRWA,” and “The right of return is consistent; we won’t give up.” The Framework for Cooperation is an agreement signed between the US and UNRWA for 2021-2022 that calls for the resumption of funds to the refugee agency, after it was halted by former US president Donald Trump’s administration.
Under the framework, which was signed in July, the United States paid UNRWA $135m in additional funds. “No contributions by the US shall be made to UNRWA, except on the condition that UNRWA takes all possible measures to assure that no part of the US contribution shall be used to furnish assistance to any refugee who is receiving military training as a member of the so-called Palestinian Liberation Army or any other guerrilla-type organization or has engaged in act of terrorism,” it said..... UN report warns of global water Palestinian factions in Gaza call to end latest UNRWA-US deal crisis amid climate change GENEVA: More than five billion people could have difficulty accessing water in 2050, the United Nations warned on Tuesday, urging leaders to seize the initiative at the COP26 summit. Already in 2018, 3.6 billion people had inadequate access to water for at least one month per year, said a new report from the UN’s World Meteorological Organisation. “We need to wake up to the looming water crisis,” said WMO chief Petteri Taalas. “The State of Climate Services 2021: Water” report comes just weeks before COP26 — the UN Climate Change Conference being held in Glasgow from October 31 to November 12. The WMO stressed that over the last 20 years, the levels of water stored on land — on the surface, in the subsurface, in snow and ice — had dropped at a rate of one centimetre per year. The biggest losses are in Antarctica and Greenland, but many highly-populated lower latitude locations are experiencing significant water losses in areas that traditionally provide water supply, said the WMO.
Dubai ruler ordered hacking of ex-wife’s Is Turkey really serious about climate change? phone using Israeli spyware: UK judge .
Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum authorised the use of spying software to hack the phone of his ex-wife, according to a British court ruling published on Wednesday. The phone of Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, 47, and those of her lawyers and others in her entourage were hacked using Pegasus spyware during the pair’s acrimonious divorce custody case in London, the High Court found. The 72-year-old sheikh, who is the vice-president and prime minister of the UAE, gave his “express or implied authority” for the phone of Princess Haya to be hacked with the multi-million-pound soft-
ware only available to national governments, the ruling said. Presiding judge Andrew McFarlane concluded Sheikh Mohammed was “prepared to use the arm of the state to achieve what he regards as right”, explaining the surveillance of at least six phones was attempted. “He has harassed and intimidated [her] both before her departure to England and since,” he added. In March 2020, McFarlane ruled on the balance of probability that the billionaire Emirati sheikh had ordered the abduction of two of his daughters by another marriage and subjected Princess Haya to a campaign of fear. She was forced to flee to London in 2019 with their two children — Al Jalila, 13, and Zayed, aged nine — as a result. After Sheikh Mohammed applied for the two children to be returned to the Gulf kingdom, Princess Haya — his sixth wife and a halfsister of Jordan’s King Abdullah II — filed for the children to be made wards of court and requested a non-molestation order for herself...Source: bc.ctvnews.ca
Istanbul, Turkey – “They don’t care about the environment, they care about money, always money,” says Nurcan Keskin, a retired teacher as she takes a break from collecting signatures for a petition to save what Turkish climate activists say is a rare green space in this bustling metropolis of 16 million. Home to birds and other wildlife, the 354,000-square metre (423,000-sq yard) Validebag Grove is a legally protected space, and its trees are part of the lungs of the city, absorbing greenhouse gases that cause global warming. It is also yet another flashpoint in what seems like a constant battle between Turkey’s government and environmental activists. For more than 100 days now, Keskin and dozens of other activists have kept watch against bulldozers and police who would
like to enter the grove and begin construction to transform it into a “People’s Garden” – part of a national programme the government has said will make tens of thousands of green spaces more accessible to the public. More than 30,000 people though, have signed a petition against that development, which includes paving over trails and building a 500-space car park. “They are presenting this as if they want to serve people. But that’s not the case,” says Arif Belgin, another activist at the grove. “They demolish green spaces so they can put up buildings instead. This is a protected natural area, but the state is not willing to preserve it, so we come and preserve it instead.” Source: Source: aljazeera.com

Conservatives ‘united’ O’Toole says, after MPs COVID-19 pandemic no longer give themselves the power to remove him Canadians’ top concern: Nanos survey
.OTTAWA -- Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole says his caucus is “fully united,” despite MPs voting to give themselves the power to potentially oust him after the party’s 2021 federal election loss. On Tuesday Conservative MPs met in-person in Ottawa for their meeting since the election, where O’Toole faced a caucus upset by various elements of the unsuccessful national campaign, including losing seats and MPs in key regions of the country. Coming out of the meeting where his MPs took what could be the first step in removing him, O’Toole said he remains confident that he has enough caucus support to remain at the helm of the party. “As I said today during our first meeting as a caucus: as leader, I am accountable. Accountable for what went well, and accountable for where we fell short. I’m also accountable for where we failed in
executing on our plan for Canadians, and I take that responsibility very seriously. I’m resolutely committed to reviewing every element of our campaign,” O’Toole told reporters. “We’re all disappointed, no one more so than me. But we have to make sure we build on the gains we have, learn from where we fell short,” he said. The caucus’s decision to leave the door open to the possibility to change up its leadership before the next election was one of four key resolutions they made on Tuesday. Through the Reform Act— an initiative from Ontario Conservative MP Michael Chong that came into effect in 2015—the caucus voted on giving themselves four key internal powers for the coming session, including the ability to review and remove their party leader and elect an interim replacement. If Conservatives want to forge ahead with this leadership review, 20 per cent of caucus would need to sign a formal agreement to trigger the process, and then it would require a majority of caucus members to vote to remove the leader through a secret-ballot process. O’Toole encouraged his caucus to vote in favour of enacting these powers, and he said after the meeting that just because caucus has the ability in its back pocket, he doesn’t feel threatened by it. Time running short for Afghans hoping for refuge in Canada
TORONTO -- The COVID-19 pandemic that has transformed how many of us live since it first grabbed attention nearly two years ago is no longer the top issue of concern among Canadians, according to the latest polling from Nanos Research. The latest issue tracking data found that 17.1 per cent of respondents ranked the “environment” as their top national issue of concern, surpassing the COVID-19 pandemic for the first time since March 2020. “This week in the Nanos tracking coronavirus was not, I repeat, not the top national issue of concern,” Nik Nanos, founder and chief data scientist at Nanos Research, said on the latest episode of CTV’s Trend Line podcast. “It was the environment as what Canadians are worried about and the environment has been on the upswing in the last number of weeks, with concern about
coronavirus on the downswing.” Overall, 14.9 per cent of respondents labelled COVID-19 as their top national issue, with healthcare (11.9 per cent), jobs and the economy (11.1 per cent) and the national deficit (4.7 per cent) trailing behind. “I think a lot of this has to do with not necessarily the environment being more important, but the coronavirus,” Nanos said. “People (are) feeling a little more comfortable, a little more normalization of people’s lives. The kids are back to school. People are thinking about going back to work and as a result, less concern about the coronavirus.” Pre-pandemic, Nanos polling shows that the environment was the top national concern among Canadians (20.5 per cent), followed by jobs (15.4 per cent), healthcare (12.3 per cent) and the national deficit (4.9 per cent). During the federal election last month, the environment was among the hot-button issues for the parties. The Liberals have promised to push the oil-and gas sector and the entire country to net-zero emissions by 2050, to end all plastic waste by the end of this decade and phasing out public financing for fossil fuels...... Mayor Doug McCallum promises to fast-track City’s approval for PICS Society’s upcoming long-term care facility
TORONTO -- Thousands of Afghans fleeing the Taliban are growing increasingly desperate for any sort of lifeline that can bring them to safety. An estimated 1,700 men, women and children destined for Canada are currently holed up in safe houses across Afghanistan, where they are fearful for their lives after helping the Canadian Armed Forces in the Afghanistan war. “If he gets me, yeah, they will kill us, because he knows about us,” said one Afghan man, who is notbeing named for safety reasons. As he and thousands of others are pleading for help, there are few resources at there disposal in Canada and on the ground after Canada’s embassy suspended operations on Aug. 15. The Veterans Transition Network (VTN), which has been raising money to help the Afghan interpreters, says money is running out and they have yet to receive any support from the federal government. “We have raised $1.7 million privately, we have spent $1.4 million of that money,” said retired Maj.-Gen. Denis Thompson.
Thompson said with the organization’s current burn rate, it only has a few weeks left to help before the money runs out. In a statement, a spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada said the agency is “in close contact” with the VTN and is “working to support their efforts to protect vulnerable persons in Afghanistan including human rights defenders, women peacebuilders, former Canadian Armed Forces interpreters and locally engaged staff.”........Source: cbc.ca

OTTAWA -- Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan’s office is standing by the military’s decision to reassign a senior officer who wrote a reference for a convicted sex offender to a new job that involves reviewing ways to eliminate sexual misconduct from the Canadian Armed Forces. Yet survivors and experts of military sexual misconduct are expressing outrage over Maj.-Gen. Peter Dawe’s new role, saying it raises even more questions about the Armed Forces’ ability
and commitment to addressing the problem. “This decision clearly illustrates an inability to think rationally about the (military sexual trauma) file and the challenges it presents,” said Sam Samplonius of It’s Not Just 700, which represents survivors of military sexual misconduct. “This decision also perpetuates the perspective that the senior officers are more concerned with taking care of each other at the expense of others.” Dawe was relieved as commander of Canada’s special forces in April when the CBC reported that he had written a character reference four years earlier for a soldier convicted of sexually assaulting a comrade’s wife. Dawe quickly apologized to service members, and acting chief of the defence staff Gen. Wayne Eyre said in a statement at the time that he remained confident in the senior officer, “who has accepted full responsibility and has learned from this tragic case.”.......... uts and seeds are not just crunchy foods that appeal to our taste buds, but are important for our health too. Nuts and seeds nourish our body with proteins, vitamins, fats and minerals that jointly work to keep cardiac ailments, digestion problems, brain disorders and even weight problems in check. Consuming even a single handful or 1 ounce of these power packed nuts and seeds each day can help ensure good health and a long life. Following are a few important health benefits of eating nuts and seeds:
4 Health Benefits of Eating Nuts & Seeds
4 Health Benefits of Eating Nuts & Seeds Nuts & Seeds Help in Reduction of Inflammation A storehouse of essential mono and polyunsaturated fats, nuts and seeds help in maintaining the normal cellular structure in the body and reducing inflammation. Full-fat dairy, meats, processed and fried food are high in saturated and trans-fats, which give rise to inflammation in the body. Moreover, the intake of a regular, healthy, fibre-rich diet comprising of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains can also help in lowering cholesterol levels in the body to a great extent, which is a great reason to start eating
nuts and seeds. Bile acids are essential to promote fat digestion in the body. Fibres stick to the bile acids to reduce the fat absorption in the body thereby promoting reduction in the cholesterol level. The small chain fatty acid called propionate produced in the intestine during fermentation of fibres further keeps the cholesterol level in check. Propionate works in the liver to inhibit the enzyme called HMG CoA reductase from triggering the formation of cholesterol. Studies have shown that apart from reduction in cholesterol levels that can be attained by consuming a diet enriched with healthy fats, an extra 25% decrease can further be achieved by the additional consumption of nuts.

in the religion. The Eastern culture can have a lot of different Gods and religions. People believe not in one God, but they have a lot of them, for example, the Gods of the sky, sun and other ones. But in the Western culture is only one God and a lot of people from the West culture accept the Christianity. The Eastern culture is built on the different ancient traditions and rules. The West can break the rules and change them with the development. The West tries to find more information about this world, but the East does not like a lot of modern technologies. The people from the West are the masters of the nature, but the people from the West live in the nature, they are together with it. People from the West can show their point of view directly, in a few words. They do not use very long sentences and words, but at that time, people from the East like to use such constructions and some citations. Sometimes, it is very difficult to understand each other for peoples, that belong to the different cultures. For the Western culture, the person is on the first place, but if we compare it with the Eastern culture, there the person is not on the first place. You will see, that here, people live for the others, but in the Western culture, people should live for themselves only. It is possible to see the difference in solving the problem. People from the West see the problem and do everything possible to solve it in the shortest way. At that time, people,
that live on the East, will think a lot and will do all possible to find the other solution. It can be the funny fact, but there is also the difference in the mood and the weather in these cultures. If there is the sunny weather, all people will be glad, but the people from the East will be glad even if there is the rain, at that time, when the people from the West will not be so happy. If we would like to check the life of the older people in these cultures, it can be in this way. The old people in the West spend their free time with animals or traveling, but the people in the East try to spend a lot of their free time with their children, families and relatives. It is because of the fact, that people value the family traditions a lot of the East. The detailed information you can find in the importance of family essay. If we check the working sphere, we will see the different attitude to the boss. In the Western culture, the boss is accepted as the usual worker, which can even be your friend and you can drink the beer with him after hard working day. But in the Eastern culture, the boss is the wisest person in the organization and people really respect him. The more detailed information you can get in the essay on cultural diversity, ordering it on our site, If we compare the transport system, we will see this picture. For example, in 1970 people from the West used a lot of cars, but at the same time, people from the East used the bi-
cycles. If we compare the year 2006, we will see, that situation has changed. People from the East use a lot of cars, at that time, when people from the West try to use a lot of bicycles. If people went abroad, you can notice, that people from the West just look everything and try to visit every famous place. At the same time, people from the East have a lot of cameras and try to film everything they see. If we compare the meals, it is possible to see, that people from the West like eating different east food, at that time, when the people from the East like to eat the European cuisine. All of you know, that people from the West cannot imagine their life without coca cola. They can drink it every day. But at the same time, the famous drink between the people from the East is tea. They have a lot of sorts and it is possible to purchase this product in the shop. The prices are high, but you can be sure, that you are drinking the real tea. As we have a lot of work every day, we can notice, that usually we eat hot soup or something like it only 1 time per day. But people from the East can eat the hot dish 3 times per day. As we can see, all people are different and because of it, the cultures are different too. It is very interesting to find some new traditions and rules for yourself every day, because of it. The information below has been taken from the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists website. he Pandora Papers investigation is the world’s largest-ever journalistic collaboration, involving more than 600 journalists from 150 media outlets in 117 countries. The investigation is based on a leak of confidential records of 14 offshore service providers that give professional services to wealthy individuals and corporations seeking to incorporate shell companies, trusts, foundations and other entities in low- or no-tax jurisdictions. The entities enable owners to conceal their identities from the public and sometimes from regulators. Often, the providers help them open bank accounts in countries with light financial regulation. The 2.94 terabytes of data, leaked to ICIJ and shared with media partners around the world, arrived in various formats: as documents, images, emails, spreadsheets, and more. The records include an unprecedented amount of information on so-called beneficial owners of entities registered in the British Virgin Islands, Seychelles, Hong Kong, Belize, Panama, South Dakota and other secrecy jurisdictions. They also contain information on the shareholders, directors and officers. In addition to the rich, the famous and the infamous, those exposed by the leak include people who don’t represent a public interest and who don’t appear in our reporting, such as small business owners, doctors and other, usually affluent, individuals away from the public spotlight. While some of the files date to the 1970s,

most of those reviewed by ICIJ were created between 1996 and 2020. They cover a wide range of matters: the creation of shell companies, foundations and trusts; the use of such entities to purchase real estate, yachts, jets and life insurance; their use to make investments and to move money between bank accounts; estate planning and other inheritance issues; and the avoidance of taxes through complex financial schemes. Some documents are tied to financial crimes, including money laundering. The more than 330 politicians exposed by the leak were from more than 90 countries and territories. They used entities in secrecy jurisdictions to buy real estate, hold money in trust, own other companies and other assets, sometimes anonymously. The Pandora Papers investigation also reveals how banks and law firms work closely with offshore service providers to design complex corporate structures. The files show that providers don’t always know their customers, despite their legal obligation to take care not to do business with people who engage in questionable dealings. The investigation also reports on how US trust providers have taken advantage of some states’ laws that promote secrecy and help wealthy overseas clients hide wealth to avoid taxes in their home countries.
What form did the data come in?
The 11.9 million-plus records were largely unstructured. More than half of the files (6.4 million) were text documents, including more than 4 million PDFs, some of which ran to more than 10,000-pages. The documents included passports, bank statements, tax declarations, company incorporation records, real estate contracts and due diligence questionnaires. There were also more than 4.1 million images and emails in the leak. Spreadsheets made up 4% of the documents, or more than 467,000. The records also in-
cluded slide shows and audio and video files. through a company in the British Virgin What’s in a name The papers are named after the Greek myth Islands (BVI), a tax of Pandora’s box. The report brings promises of tax reform, demands for resignations, investigations and explanations from those targeted.
A look at world leaders named in the Pandora Papers.
UK:
Tony Blair, UK prime minister from 1997 to 2007, became the owner of an $8.8m Victorian building in 2017 by buying a BVI company that held the property, and the building now hosts the law firm of his wife, Cherie Blair, according to the investigation. The two bought the company from the family of Bahrain’s industry and tourism minister, Zayed bin Rashid al-Zayani. Buying the company shares instead of the London building saved the Blairs more than $400,000 in property taxes, the investigation found. The Blairs denied any wrongdoing, with the couple’s spokesperson saying “the Blairs pay full tax on all their earnings. And have never used offshore schemes either to hide transactions or avoid tax.”
A global investigation has revealed how the rich and powerful have been hiding their investments in mansions, exclusive beachfront property, yachts and other assets for the past quarter-century. Collectively these assets are worth trillions of dollars. The investigation, dubbed the Pandora Papers, was published late on Sunday and involved 600 journalists from 150 media outlets in 117 countries. Let Your Values Drive Your Choices
N
By: Asma Shums, early every problem you face is temporary. But these temporary problems cause immediate pain. And we often let this pain drive our choices and actions. For example… An employee suffering from the pain of not feeling important enough or powerful enough might take a terrible job with a fancy title. An individual suffering from the pain of feeling unloved or unappreciated or misunderstood might try to resolve that pain by cheating on their spouse. An entrepreneur suffering from the pain of a faltering small business might resort to us-
ing questionable marketing tactics to try to drive more sales. …and so on. This is how you make choices you wouldn’t normally make. When you let the problem drive your decisions, you make exceptions and “just this once” choices to resolve the pain, annoyance, or uncertainty that you’re feeling in the moment. How can we avoid this pitfall and make better long-term choices while still resolving short-term pain? Here’s an approach I’ve been trying recently. See if it works for you…
The Power of a Constraint You Believe In
let my values drive my choices. That doesn’t mean I ignore other aspects of my decisionmaking process. I simply add my core values into the mix. For example, if I’m working on a problem in my business, rather than just asking, “Will this make money?” I can ask, “Is this in alignment with my values?” And then, “Will this make money?” If I say no to either, then I look for another option. The idea behind this method is that if we live and work in alignment with our values, then we’re more likely to live a life we are proud of rather than one we regret.
about their values, write them down, and clarify them. Maybe it sounds too simple or unnecessary. You are welcome to use that report as a template for discovering your own values and aligning them with your work and life.
Every decision is made within some type of constraint. Maybe it’s how much knowledge you have. Maybe it’s how much money you have. Maybe it’s how many resources you have. Why not what values you have? Making better choices is often a matter of choosing better constraints. Let Your Values Drive Your Choices How to Put This Into Practice
The Bottom Line
If you don’t know what you stand for and where you’re headed, then it’s far too easy to get off course, to waste your time doing something you don’t need to be doing, or to make an exception (“just this once”) that leads you down a dangerous path. There are brilliant men and women with decent hearts and families they care dearly about spending a long time in jail right now because they made business decisions that were based on the pain they felt and not the values they believed in.
If you never sit down to think about your values, then you’ll be more likely to make decisions based on whatever information is in front of you at the time. That can be a recipe for regret down the road. Why We Need More Women in These Particular Careers Than Ever Before?
company when she moved home. But she wasn’t sure she still wanted to do that type of work—and she knew she wanted to make more money than the $12 to $14 per hour she was being paid. “My dad is an electrician,” she says. “And I had always helped him when I was growing up. I like hands-on work. And, I was looking for something that was a little bit more rewarding than just sitting in an office answering the phone.” So, at 35, Greeley went to trade school. She’s one of a relatively small group. According to a 2016 report by the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum (CAF-FCA), in 2012, women accounted for only 14.2 percent of all registrations in the trades. Most women in the trades are employed in the ser-
vice sector, not in the male-dominated manufacturing and construction trades—especially those governed by the Red Seal Interprovincial Standards Program. Red Seal tradespeople have been trained to the same standards across the country, allowing them to move more easily between provinces. In fact, women’s representation in many trades, including automotive service technician, electrician and carpenter, is less than five per cent. (The numbers are even smaller when it comes to women of colour. The same CAF-FCA report says, “nearly half of Red Seal trades have no visible minority women, and the other half only between one and 12 per cent.”) And that’s a problem, because Canada is facing a growing shortage of skilled workers. “In 2019, CAF-FCA published a labour market report that showed that from 2019 to 2023, an estimated 67,000 new journeypersons will be required to sustain workforce certification levels across the 10 largest Red Seal trades in Canada, excluding Quebec and the Territories,” says France Daviault, executive director of the organization. “Keeping pace with the demand for skills and workforce certification will require attracting 167,739 new apprentices over the next five years. The current job pool is not sustainable without concrete efforts to bring in populations that are currently severely underrepre-

In the early 1900s all the way up to the early 2000s, residential schools were part of Canada’s plan to assimilate the Canadian Indigenous population. Although they preached education and religious conversion, children were isolated from their homes, families, cultures, and traditions. sites answered the question parents and brothers and sisters and grandparents have been asking for years. Where did our children go? The clear answer being that those who never returned home, were murdered and buried in secret. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission was formed to create an accurate historical account of the residential schools, to help survivors and victims heal, and to encourage reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. Another part of the Commission’s job is to push for the selected 94 calls to action. These are regarding education, welfare, language and culture, health, justice and much more in relation to Indigenous Nations. The Indigenous Peoples’ underwent trau
There aren’t enough skilled workers in Canada but attracting more women to these jobs will go a long way. Here’s why the gender gap exists, and how to fix it. By Stacy Lee Kong hen Joann Greeley moved back to her hometown in 2004, the province was in the middle of a push to hire more women in the skilled trades. “Every second ad on TV was for [a skilled trade mentoring program],” she says. The province had also set up an office dedicated to advancing and supporting women apprentices and put targets in place for hiring at big provincial projects. For years, Greeley had worked in insurance in Kitchener, Ont., and found a job at an insurance

sented: namely women, Indigenous peoples and people with disabilities. We have heard from companies who have had to turn away business due to lack of resources [so] it’s a good business decision to tap into the 51 per cent of the population that are women.” But the barriers to entry for women are well-known. There’s not enough awareness around apprenticeship and skilled trades careers, or encouragement for girls to take STEM-related classes in high school. This leads to fewer young women choosing to participate in pre-apprenticeship programs. And among those who do pursue vocational training, many have a hard time finding mentors and employment sponsors, and often have to deal with unwelcoming workplaces. Where there are financial barriers, trade schools are working to alleviate these. “We provide free training for women in the skilled trades,” says Julia Biedermann, the now-retired executive dean at Conestoga College’s school of engineering & IT. “These are called pre-apprenticeship programs, as they provide basic training in a particular skilled trade that will prepare the women for entering the trade and securing an apprenticeship. Conestoga has been offering the WIST-Carpentry (Women in Skilled Trades Carpentry) program for about 20 yea rs.”.....................................Source: macleans.ca

Falcon says removing Port Mann bridge tolls was “short-sighted”
In 2017, John Horgan and the BC NDP eliminated tolls on the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges, saving families up to $1,500 a year. This morning on Red FM, BC Liberal leadership candidate Kevin Falcon called that decision “a short-sighted move.” It’s the latest in Falcon’s consistent support for bridge tolls. On CKNW on May 18, he said tolling the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges was “the right thing to do.” And in October 2020, Falcon wrote: “I’ll concede it was smart politics to remove the tolls if really bad public policy.” Just a few weeks ago, Falcon said he would scrap the BC NDP’s toll-free Massey re-
placement: “if I become leader of the BC Liberal Party… that tunnel is going to get cancelled if we form government.”
BC NDP MLA Rachna Singh:
“Kevin Falcon is the architect of the unfair BC Liberal tolls that used to cost families thousands of dollars every year. Now he’s continuing to attack the BC NDP’s decision to eliminate those tolls. It’s clear he would toll the Massey replacement and put them back on the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges. People can’t afford to go back to the BC Liberals.”
