ANCOUVER - The historic and deadly storm that bombarded British Columbia this week has left many worried onlookers from across the country feeling desperate to help – and there’s a growing number of ways to do so. On Wednesday, the Canadian Red Cross launched a donation page to help fund humanitarian assistance to those impacted by the flooding and landslides, which led to mass evacuations and cut off entire communities from the rest of the province.Donations made through the British Columbia Floods and Extreme Weather Appeal will be reserved for the current crisis, the charitable organization said, with no more than five per cent going toward fundraising costs “The devastating flooding in the coastal and Interior regions of B.C. has resulted
in thousands of British Columbians being displaced. The Red Cross is committed to helping during this urgent time of need,” said Pat Quealey, Canadian Red Cross vicepresident for B.C. and Yukon, in a statement.Canadians can also donate to individual fundraisers through GoFundMe, though they should be wary of fraudulent campaigns designed to exploit public sympathy, the likes of which often emerge after major catastrophes.GoFundMe has set up a cen-
tralized hub for verified fundraisers for B.C. flooding victims, which include campaigns for a number of displaced families and affected businesses...

‘Super easy’: How Canadian travellers are getting free COVID-19 tests to return home from U.S.
T
ORONTO -- Despite the Canada-U.S. land border now being open, some travellers say the mandatory negative molecular COVID-19 test required to return to Canada, which can cost more than the equivalent of C$150, has them continuing to forgo trips.Currently, anyone entering Canada must show proof of a negative molecular test for COVID-19 taken no more than 72 hours before their arrival at the border. Those tests, such as
the PCR test, are to be taken at the traveller’s expense, and while the costs of these tests vary, they often carry a price tag anywhere from $150 to $300. Rapid, antigen tests, which are less expensive, are not accepted to return to Canada. Yet some Canadians have found an affordable option, with select U.S. clinics and pharmacies offering free molecular tests through a governmentfunded program across all states. However, they stress that planning ahead is necessary to To be Continued at page 6
Ex-CJP Nisar rubbishes media report on keeping Nawaz, Maryam in jail during 2018 elections
F
ormer chief justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar on Monday rubbished allegations levelled against him by former top judge of Gilgit-Baltistan, Rana Shamim, regarding a collusion to deny bails to former premier Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz before general elections 2018. An investigative report published today in The News by journalist Ansar Abbasi, quotes Shamim as saying in an alleged affidavit that he witnessed Nasir relaying instructions to a high court judge to not release the the father-daughter duo in the corruption references against them. The document being quoted by The News report has been notarised by Charles D. Guthrie, a London-based solicitor. When reached for comment, Guthrie told Dawn. com he cannot comment on the document. Interestingly, Guthrie had also notarised the
forensic report of the video in which the nowdeceased Judge Arshad Malik was secretly recorded as saying that he was blackmailed and put under pressure to convict Nawaz Sharif and that he regretted convicting him. Meanwhile, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Farrukh Habib tweeted that Guthrie had also notarised the medical reports provided by Nawaz Sharif as the reason for extending his stay in the UK. According to the alleged affidavit, Shamim claims the ex-CJP had travelled to GB for vacations in 2018 and on one occasion appeared “very disturbed” while speaking to his registrar on the phone, asking him to get in touch with a high court judge. Shamim said that Nisar was finally able to get in touch with the judge and told him that Nawaz
and Maryam must remain in jail until elections are over, after which “he became calm and happily demanded another cup of tea”. According to the document, Shamim said he told Nisar that Nawaz had been falsely implicated, to which the former CJP replied: To be Continued at page 6

True Believers Love - Not Fear - God been entrusted to him against some actual evil forces, is no more than a preventive measure against those forces before they are systematically prevailed over. At the end of the day, that, too, does not warrant to be called a fear. Rather, it is a great act of bravery, diligence and maturity.
Fearing God By: Spahic Omer Some people have problems reconciling the following truths.
F
irst, it is rightly said that you can never love a person whom you fear (a statement often ascribed to Aristotle). There is no room in the heart for both fear and love towards the same person or thing. It is either one, or none. Second, the highest level of one’s piety is to fear God as He should be feared (Alu ‘Imran, 102). Whenever God is mentioned, the hearts of true believers become full of fear (al-Anfal, 2). Third, believers are expected to love God more than anything else. Not doing so is a serious spiritual deficiency (al-Tawbah, 24). Fourth, true believers, who follow the heavenly guidance, are supposed to have neither fear nor grief (al-Baqarah, 38). All of the above assertions are correct. The best way to reconcile them is to carefully analyse the Qur’anic concepts of piety, fear, love and man’s relationships with God, the Creator, and His creations. The same concepts can be further explained in the light of the Prophet’s Sunnah. One should also bear in mind that the Arabic language is so rich and diverse that sometimes two apparently synonymous words may be significantly different. They may be a world of subtle meanings apart. Thus, a main condition for truly excelling in any branch of Islamic studies is the adequate knowledge of Arabic. Without that, more harm than benefit can be generated, notwithstanding people’s sincere intentions and the levels of their commitment. In passing, herein lies one of the main causes of the biggest predicaments Muslims face today. God reveals that He has sent it (the Qur’an) (Yusuf, 2), and has made it (al-Zukhruf, 3), an Arabic Qur’an that people may be able to understand and learn wisdom. That means that no proper understanding and wisdom (epistemology) are possible without the Qur’an, or the revealed knowledge, and without the Arabic language as its method and system of communication.
Born to love and be brave
According to the Islamic worldview, people are created to love. They learn how to hate. When they love, they stay true to themselves and their primordial nature (fitrah). To love is to be normal. That is why love is called hubb in Arabic. Related to the same root word is the word habb, which means seed. When a person is born, he is implanted with the seed (habb) of love (hubb), which he is expected to grow and cultivate throughout his life. To hate, conversely, is an anomaly. A person who hates is abnormal. That is why hatred in Arabic is called karahiyyah. It is from the same root word as the words akraha and ikrah, which mean “to force or compel” and “compulsion” respectively. That implies when a person hates, he goes against his intrinsic nature. He forces an aberrant feeling and activity upon himself.
Consistent with His divine attributes,
Almighty God created life full of goodness. What can be perceived as life’s negativities, such as Satan, pain, suffering, death, etc., are relative things. Their being bad and undesirable is only skin-deep. It is an outward property and so, easily deceiving. God created those things as means to a higher order of meaning and experience. They are to be openly and decisively dealt with. They are likewise to be contemplated, thus penetrating the greatest secrets of life and man’s purpose in it. Man in addition is created as God’s vicegerent on earth. The end of his successful life mission is God’s pleasure and His Jannah (Paradise). Every moment and activity is a step closer to the fulfilment of that noble objective. Thus, a believing man has no reason to worry about anything, let alone be afraid, except about whether he will succeed in his mission or not. Everything else is secondary and takes a back seat. Whatever aids a believer in what he strives for is priceless to him and he effortlessly develops a deep affection for it. He loves only those things. The more they are important for his life aims, the more he loves them. It goes without saying that God as his Creator and the Creator of life, is loved most by such a person. As the Source of all goodness and worth, God deserves to be loved most. Nobody gets even close to His rights and entitlement, making this paradigm as much a logic as a palpable reality. Surely, a similar reasoning goes to the ways people feel about the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), Islam as Truth, the Holy Qur’an, and fellow believers as well. With these spiritual and mental states, a believer needs neither to hate nor fear genuinely anything. He does not need to hate because life is so short and so precious to be wasted on such a meaningless and futile matter. He knows that the reason for his existence (raison d’etre) is love, compassion and being useful. He hates to hate. When he must, though, his hate is conditional and short-lived. It is resorted to only when his life ideals and mission are at stake. Such hate is virtual and never personal. A believer furthermore does not need to fear anybody and anything because it is unnatural and counterproductive. It is likewise incompatible with his second nature: love. A believer is the bravest being. He is on the right path, is an embodiment of Truth, and has Almighty God, the Creator and Master of all creation and the Absolute Truth, on his side. Not only that, God is his best ally, protector and friend on his journey.Fears associable with such a person are not fears per se. The abject fear of the coward is unknown to him. The fear before a potential unidentified danger is also unfeasible, for only actual dangers are confronted, making that pursuit an act of courage itself. There is no such thing as childish (immature) and imaginary fears for a believer. Moreover, the fear of a sensible man who wants to protect himself and such as have
Believers do not fear God. They love Him more than anything else. He means to them everything. All value, goodness, beauty and knowledge come only from Him. Believers know they came from God as their Creator, they belong to Him, they live under His care, love and providence, and in the end they return to Him. Believers’ total lifestyles, based exclusively on love, are mere offshoots of their infinite and unqualified love for God. Moreover, their love is an earthly reflection of God’s divine love for His creation, in that man has been created in God’s image (Sahih Muslim). In this love relationship, there is a significant degree of fear on the side of man, which however is conditional and yet fully placed in service of love. So immense and authentic is a believer’s love for God that he constantly fears that he may do something he shouldn’t do, or that he may not do something he should do, whereby his personal relationship with God, imbued with love, might be weakened. These are ostensibly fears. However, in reality, they are extensions, as well as signs, of true love. For example, a person prays not because he fears God, but because he loves Him. He also trusts God and knows that prayers are good for him. He fears the prospect of missing his prayers only because his love for God, and God’s love for him, will be affected thereby, which is unimaginable for him. The same holds true as regards all the other commands and prohibitions aimed to strengthen and nurture man’s relationship with God. This is what is normally interpreted as al-taqwa, as the highest station in one’s spiritual ascension. The concept is often translated as “fear of God”. However, if the translation is properly conceptualized and contextualized, and is accompanied with necessary clarifications, it is then acceptable. If it is not, then it shouldn’t be accepted as such, for the translation entails more than a few problematic nuances. Indeed, if a person believes in God and obeys him solely as a result of fear, such in no way is a mark of commendable faith. Al-taqwa is derived from the words waqa
and wiqayah, which mean “to protect” and “protection” respectively. Al-taqwa could therefore be construed as “observing one’s duty to God”, “God-consciousness”, “selfrestraint”, “protecting the relationship with God, and by means of performing righteous deeds and shunning immoral ones, protecting oneself from the consequences of damaging such relationship”. Al-taqwa is also understood as a shield. To fear God in the conventional sense of the threat of a perceived danger, or because God is seen as innately angry, aggressive and willing to punish, is not right. It is a sign of one’s weak faith and even misguidance. Needless to say that one needs to fear God and His punishment only if he rejected and disobeyed Him. He must do so proportionately to his misconduct. A true believer is so obsessed with cultivating love for God that he has no time, nor interest, to worry about unduly fearing him. His heart is so filled with love that there is no room whatsoever for components of unnecessary fear in it. He only fears the prospect of incurring God’s displeasure, by whatever means and whatever degree. At any rate, it is either love or fear. One needs to fear God only because he does not love Him. Whereas one needs not fear God only because he loves Him and behaves in accordance with the dictates of that love.
The Qur’an and the concepts of fear
There are more than ten types of fear articulated by the Qur’an. This is partly because of the richness of the Arabic language, and partly because of the importance of the concept and its many categories and their detailed nuances. Four categories stand out. The first and most basic category is khawf, which is the fear of something specific physical or otherwise - that is dangerous and unpleasant, and can harm. This category appears 124 times in the Qur’an in several derived forms. Believers do not harbour this type of fear in relation to God. Yet if they to some extent do, it is rather metaphorical and deterrent. Evildoers entertain it, and are advised to do so, as their actions merit nothing but God’s punishment and wrath. Illustrative of this type of fear are the following verses: “Say: “Indeed I fear (akhaf), if I should disobey my Lord, the punishment of a tremendous Day” (al-An’am, 15). “O Musa (Moses), fear not (la takhaf). Indeed, in My presence the messengers do not

CSIS info-sharing with RCMP in extremist Govt powers through 33 crucial bills in joint session; probe ‘very limited,’ security watchdog says allows voting rights for overseas Pakistanis, use of EVMs OTTAWA -- Long-standing, systemic problems hampered co-operation between Canada’s spy service and national police force on the investigation of an extremist threat, a new security watchdog report says. In its findings, the National Security and Intelligence Review Agency points to chronic informationsharing challenges for the Canadian Security Intelligence Service and the RCMP. The review agency looked at how CSIS and the Mounties worked together on investigating extremists based in Canada, though details of the specific threat were stripped from a public version of the report. A key sticking point is the perennial concern that use of CSIS information in a criminal prosecution could endanger the spy service’s secret sources and methods. The heavily censored version of the agency’s February 2021 review says CSIS’s formal disclosures of information to the RCMP on the extremist case were “very limited and not always useful.” “CSIS intelligence has not been shared or used in a way that has significantly advanced the
RCMP’s investigations.”The need to shield spy sources and methods complicates, and can even jeopardize, potential prosecutions, the report says.Known as the “intelligence-toevidence” problem, this shared understanding guides the actions of both CSIS and the RCMP, the review agency notes. “Indeed, NSIRA observed a general reluctance on the part of both agencies to connect CSIS information to an RCMP investigation,” the agency’s report says.“An ordinary Canadian could be forgiven for wondering at a system in which one government agency in Ottawa has amassed a large collection of intelligence on a threat, ....Source: ctvnews.ca/
Latest on B.C. floods: Premier urges residents not to hoard groceries as shelves run bare
BARRIE -- British Columbia Premier John Horgan has declared a provincial state of emergency due to flooding that has displaced people from their homes and disrupted transportation routes. During the announcement Wednesday, the premier also asked residents not to hoard groceries as shelves are already running bare. Minister of Public Safety Mike Farnworth asked the public not to travel unless it’s essential as efforts are underway to get infrastructure and highways back up. Horgan said more fatalities are expected due to mudslides and flooding. Agriculture Minister Lana Popham said “thousands of animals have perished” as a result of the floods. On Tuesday, officials in the city of Abbotsford issued an urgent plea to anyone in the Sumas Prairie to evacuate immediately, as flood waters threatened the Barrowtown Pump Station. Officials said conditions in
the Sumas Prairie area have “escalated” and pose a “significant risk to life due to the imminent failure” of the pump station. The notice said if the pump fails, all the water within the Sumas Prairie will not be able to be pumped out and water from the Fraser River will begin entering. “This event is anticipated to be catastrophic,” the order read. Speaking at a press conference Wednesday, Abbotsford Mayor Henry Braun, said overnight 184 people were evacuated from the area, adding that those efforts are ongoing. He said aerial assessments of the area are also underway...Source: ctvnews.ca
TORONTO -- The mother of a 15-year-old boy who was killed in a stabbing at a Toronto high school said that no one had called her to let her know that her son was critically injured and was being taken to the hospital. Grade 11 student Maahir Dosani was one of three teenagers who was injured in a stabbing outside of Victoria Park Collegiate Institute in North York around 3 p.m. on Tuesday. He was found unconscious on school grounds by police with a stab wound to his torso and was rushed to hospital with critical injuries.. At the time, Dosani’s mother did not know about what had happened. She told CTV News Toronto that she became worried when her son didn’t pick up his phone after
class was dismissed.“I was trying to call him and he was not answering his phone, which is very, very unusual. He always answers his phone,” Muskaan Dosani said. “I messaged one of his friends who said ‘he’s in the hospital.’”Muskaan did not know what hospital her son was being taken to, so she started calling patient lines and someone suggested she try Sunnybrook Hospital. When she arrived at Sunnybrook around 6:30 p.m., she says she was told her son had arrived without vital signs.“We didn’t get any calls from the hospital. Nobody called us,” she said. Half an hour later, police confirmed on social media that Maahir had succumbed to his injuries. “We are still in shock,” Muskaan said, fighting back tears. “We could never imagine that this would happen to my son because he was such a good kid.” According to his mother, the Grade 11 student was a sweet kid whose dream was to become a dentist.. The director of education with the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) reiterated Wednesday that Maahir “was a conscientious student who was respectful and engaged in class.” Source:/toronto.ctvnews.ca
Amid fervent protest by the opposition, the government on Wednesday managed to bulldoze amendments to the Elections Act, 2017, in the joint session of parliament, thereby allowing the use of electronic voting machines and granting voting rights to overseas Pakistanis. This prompted the opposition to tear copies of the agenda and walk out of the session in protest. Lawmakers also gathered around the treasury benches, chanting slogans against Prime Minister Imran Khan and his government. In order to avoid a situation where lawmakers from the opposition and government got into a physical altercation, the sergeants-atarms were seen standing shoulder-to-shoulder to create a barrier between the two sides. The opposition argued that as per the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly, 2007, the government required a majority of the total membership of the NA and Senate to get a bill passed in a joint session, which amounts to 222 members. However, the government side contended that as per Article 72 of the Constitution, it required a simple majority of the members present during a joint sitting to get a bill passed. NA Speaker Asad Qaiser ruled that the Constitution held precedence over the Rules. Earlier, the bill on the use of EVMs was deferred at the request of Adviser to the Prime Minister on Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan, but it was later taken up again and put up to a vote. The government then barrelled ahead with numerous other important bills including:

Nobody called us:’ Mother of teen killed outside Proud that PTI govt prioritises future generaToronto school says she wasn’t notified of stabbing tions over coming elections, says PM Imran
Prime Minister Imran Khan took pride on Tuesday in what he described as his government’s foresight to focus on long-term development, prioritising the future of coming generations over success in elections. “Nations progress when they think about their future generations, not the coming elections,” he said while addressing the groundbreaking ceremony of the 128-kilometre-long Lillah-Jhelum Road in Islamabad. Giving the example of China, which he said had progressed immensely over a period of 30 years, the premier explained that the neighbouring country saw prosperity because its leadership focused on long-term planning.“Unless you think this way, you cannot progress ... A nation doesn’t progress if you only focus on the execution of Metro [bus project] so as to win the election,” he
stressed. “I am proud that our government thought about our coming generations instead of the coming elections.” Congratulating his team, the prime minister said the economic situation was the worst when his party formed the government. “Yet, we tried to carry out long-term development” after the situation somewhat stabilised, he added. As part of this long-term planning, he said, the construction of three big dams was currently underway. The premier said the projects were being executed because the government realised that the demand for water would increase in the country in the coming years. “The population is increasing and so is the demand for food. We have to produce crops to cater to this growing demand, and for that we will need [agricultural] land, which we have, and more water, of which there is a shortage,” he explained. Hence, for the first time in 50 years, three big dams were being constructed, he said, adding that another 10 would be built over the next 10 years. The prime minister regretted that while the planning for these projects had been completed around 40 years ago, no progress had been made on their execution till now. Source: dawn.com

Why people are scared by vaccines and booster shots? By: Khadija Nadeem Miracle’s Editorial Board Member s we enter the 4th stage of this disease that has been plaguing us since early March of 2020, many of us are concerned about new developments. We know that current evidence suggests the virus spreads mainly between people who are in close contact with each other, typically within short range. Anyone can be infected when aerosols or droplets containing the virus are inhaled or come directly into contact with the eyes, nose, or mouth. It can also spread in poorly ventilated or crowded indoor settings. To combat this, we took up wearing face masks to protect ourselves and practiced social distancing. Admittedly, with worry and hesitance but as Canada came to terms with that new normal, various different vaccines were introduced to provide stronger protection against the virus in early January of 2021. Now, as the year is coming to a close and we are in the midst of a fourth wave, this is one of the topics the public has had trouble adjusting to and the term for this is vaccine hesitancy. And vaccine hesitancy was named one of the greatest health threats by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2019. The best solution though to ease concerns and fears is to research and edu-
A
cate oneself. Currently there are two types of vaccines available, one is the mRNA vaccine and the other is the viral vector vaccine. The mRNA technology was used to develop a very small piece of mRNA that contains the code for spike protein on the surface of the Covid-19 Virus. When imagining the spike protein, you can think of the spikes you see on drawings of what the virus looks like. Now this piece is a small piece of messenger RNA that doesn’t use any live biological products. It’s just pieces of nucleic acids that are put together and covered by fat, like a bubble. This bubble of fat is what keeps these nucleic acids together because they’re so fragile that they’d fall apart if not for this bubble and that’s what’s injected into the arm. So it’s like using your own body’s machinery to create pieces of what looks like the spike protein from the virus, but really it’s not made from the virus at all. The immune system recognizes those spike proteins and develops immunity to that, so when you have the actual live virus, your body recognizes it right away and destroys the virus. The most important thing to know is that both types of vaccines are FDA approved and that they have no access to your DNA. Nothing gets into your human DNA at all, nothing is altered. It’s essentially programming your body to fight against the
virus like any other vaccine we take including the influenza vaccine or the chicken pox vaccine both of which you probably have received. Now, the vaccines approved and authorized in Canada and all around the world, are highly effective in preventing disease and death, even against the new Delta Variant but they are not 100% effective and some fully vaccinated people may still contract the virus. This brings us to the next public concern, new strains and variants of an already deadly virus. The difference between this variant and the original virus is that the Delta strain is much more contagious and likely to cause even more severe illness. So what are scientists saying is the solution to that? Booster shots. This is another phase of the pandemic the public isn’t reacting well to. Let’s establish that when we say booster shots, we’re essentially talking about the potential need for a third dose of the vaccine. Scientists say that really there are only three reasons why we might want to distribute a third shot. The first of those is if you’re in a category of people that didn’t respond adequately to the first two doses that they received, including immunocompromised people who may require a third dose regardless. The second reason is if over time the immunity that you received as a result of being vac-
cinated starts to deteriorate which we don’t see strong evidence for as of right now. And the third reason a third dose might be necessary is if the performance of the vaccines are less than adequate against certain strains or variants of the virus that have emerged which is the primary concern of the general public as of right now. But again, current evidence shows that the vaccines are holding up against the more severe and deadly end of the virus. The real problem though is that when the vaccines first came out, it was established that only 2 doses were necessary. Now, there’s a possibility that the immunocompromised and elderly may need a third dose. How likely is it that we may all need a third dose? A fourth? Where is the line drawn? This is a genuine concern of the public and although science plays such a large role in our daily lives that we don’t even think to question it, when the conversation shifts to vaccines and booster shots, people are scared because they’ve already lost so much to this pandemic. It’s not only a matter of questioning the efficacy of the vaccine but also about wanting permanence and surety in the midst of all this confusion and tragedy.

Upon arriving at the testing site, Martin said she had to wait in line for about 45 minutes, before a woman took down her information including listing her
hotel when asked to provide an address, and checking her passport. Martin says the process took about 15 minutes and she was not required to provide any insurance information.“We were tested probably at three o’clock in the afternoon, and by the time I woke up Sunday morning at 7 a.m. my results were in my email,” Martin said. “It was really quick and didn’t cost me a dime. It was super easy.” Martin added that she faced no issues when flying back into Canada with her results.
While it seems simple, clinics and pharmacies do warn that Canadians may not get their test results in time for their return, as the PCR results can take up to 72 hours. Tami Watson, of Southport, Man. also recently took advantage of free PCR testing offered by the state of North Dakota when visiting her boyfriend. Watson told CTVNews.ca in a telephone interview Tuesday that her test results came back in about 28 hours. Source: ctvnews.ca

Conservatives demand Government renew Bank of Canada’s low inflation target, set to lapse December 31, 2021
Ottawa, ON – Pierre Poilievre, Conservative Shadow Minister for Finance, today called on the Liberal government and the Bank of Canada to renew the inflation-control target, which is set to lapse in just over a month. The call comes after record deficit spending has sent inflation soaring to its fastest rate in 18 years. “It’s no wonder prices are ballooning: Canada is spending more and making less. More dollars chasing fewer goods bids up prices of everyday goods,” said Poilievre. “With the biggest deficit to GDP in the G20, Justin Trudeau has sent an extra $400 billion chasing fewer goods, pushing the cost of living up two-and-a-half times faster than wages in the last year.” The government and the Bank of Canada created the inflation-control target in 1991 after government money print-
ing and overspending had tormented Canadians with decades of high inflation and unemployment. “Despite the fact that the inflation-control target is set to lapse in just over a month, neither the Prime Minister or the Finance Minister have made it clear whether it will be renewed at its current rate,” said Poilievre. On October 22nd, 2021 Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole wrote to the Prime Minister to request that the inflation-control target be renewed at its current rate. No response was received from the Prime Minister.“With the costs of everyday goods like gas, groceries, and housing continuing to reach record levels, Justin Trudeau seems to want to let the Bank of Canada inflation target lapse altogether,” said Poilievre. “If this happens, Canadians will see prices climb to levels not seen since

fear (la yakhaf)” (al-Naml, 10). “And how should I fear (akhaf) what you associate while you do not fear (la takhafun) that you have associated with Allah that for which He has not sent down to you any authority? So which of the two parties has more right to security, if you should know?” (al-An’am, 81).“…So surely there will come to you a guidance from Me, then whoever follows My guidance, there shall no fear (khawf) come upon them neither shall they grieve” (al-Baqarah, 38). Even Satan admitted that he fears God (akhafu-Allah). He did so for obvious reasons. He knows what consequences he will have to face on the Day of Judgment for all his evil schemes and deeds in this world. No surprise that after confessing his cowardly fear of God, Satan
also acknowledged: “Allah is severe in punishment (His retribution)” (al-Anfal, 48). The second prominent category of fear in the Qur’an is khashyah. It occurs 48 times in a few derived forms. It means a fear based on knowledge of some aspects of Truth which, in turn, is associated with action. It is a positive fear. It is synonymous with utmost respect and reverence. It means to be awestruck and captivated by the excellence and greatness of the known. This fear is always mentioned as a sign of true faith and as a feature of true believers. For example, the Qur’an says about God’s upright and knowledgeable servants: “Only those fear Allah (yakhsha-Allah), from among His servants, who have knowledge” (Fatir, 28).Even the Prophets have been praised by dint of this type of positive fear: “(Allah praises) those who convey the mes-
sages of Allah and fear Him (yakhshawn) and do not fear anyone but Allah. And sufficient is Allah as Accountant. The third conspicuous type of fear in the Qur’an is khushu’. It appears 17 times in several derived forms. It connotes a positive fear of God in the heart, which however manifests itself on the body and its limbs. Its root word khasha’ means “to surrender and submit to”, “to humble oneself before”, “to become humble”, and “to obey”. The bodily manifestations of the inner fear (respect and veneration) here take precedence over the internal state. For example, the Qur’an describes true believers with respect to their prayers: “They who are during their prayer humbly submissive (khashi’un)” (al-Mu’minun, 2). Just as there are humbly submissive and obedient hearts (qulub khashi’ah), there are

08 li f e s t y l e How Prime Minister Trudeau can prove that he is serious about fighting Islamophobia? Rabi ul Thani 14, 1443 November 19, 2021
by Monia Mazigh October 26, 2021
W
e can’t claim to fight Islamophobia while in the imaginations of many Canadians, (prompted by some media and some politicians), Muslims still represent a threat to “us.” Last June, I watched the Islamophobia summit that was held online. From the beginning until the end, I sat patiently for long hours listening to speaker after speaker who came to share their own experience with Islamophobia, or to present some of their research and activism on the topic, or to the politicians presenting the policies or legislation they were suggesting to fight Islamophobia. It is the Liberal government who agreed to hold this Islamophobia summit after the deadly Islamophobic attack in London, Ontario when a young Canadian man drove his truck into a Canadian Muslim family, killing four members and leaving the youngest boy an orphan. It is under the pressure of several members of London, Ontario community and the outrage and shock expressed by many Canadians that the summit was put together. I had mixed feelings about the summit. One on hand, this sort of public stunt can be very politically useful in dispensing with most of the anger and the fear that many Muslim Canadians felt and expressed immediately after the horrible event. It was a high-profile event, Prime Minister Trudeau spoke, several of his ministers did show up and spoke as well as activists and academics. Muslims can feel that their issues matter, and they are being given some attention. On the other hand, an event is never enough. A day is never enough to address all the issues and angles related to Islamophobia. The speakers were somehow selected, either through the government channels or pushed forward from particular advocacy groups. Forgotten were many voices speaking about themes like national security and Islamophobia, the war on terror and Islamophobia, media and Islamophobia. Perhaps both topics and speakers were picked in an effort to sterilize the discussion in order to not make some politicians feel uncomfortable: a sort of “Islamophobia-washing.” Just a few months after the Islamophobia summit, an election was called by Prime Minister Trudeau in a bid to flip his minority status into a majority one. Needless to say, his bid failed and we are back to a Parliament that almost mimics the previous one: a minority Liberal government with a Conservative official opposition and the NDP holding the balance of the power. If there was a major difference between the pre-election landscape and the post-election one, it would be the emergence of the People’s Party of Canada of Maxime Bernier, which gained more than 800,000 votes; an unprecedented move opening the door to official hate, racism, xenophobia and Islamophobia in Canada. During the leaders’ debate, I don’t remember once hearing the word Islamophobia as

T
if the killing of three generations of the same family motivated by hate wasn’t enough to bring the topic into Canadian affairs. In his address during the Islamophobia Summit, Prime Minister Trudeau said: “Today, I’m here to listen to you on what our next steps should be to continue building a country where everyone is welcome, safe, and respected. This is not your burden to carry alone. As a society, this is everyone’s responsibility to take on.” Later, he added “The politics of division cannot take root if we refuse to be divided. Hate cannot creep into the mainstream if we all speak up against it.” In order to make the organizers of the summit on Islamophobia accountable and to help Prime Minister Trudeau and his new government stay faithful to his words, I think it is important to set some concrete objectives. We must make the fight against Islamophobia a clear one and not a simple public relations pre-electoral performance that would be forgotten until the next Islamophobic attack. One of the issue that I didn’t hear during the Islamophobia summit was the strong link between the Canadian national security laws and Islamophobia. As if the two past decades of war on terror with what they brought as new anti-terrorism legislation, war in Afghanistan, spying and arrests of Muslim Canadians had no impact on shaping the narrative about the “dangerous nature” of Muslim Canadians and thus the banalization of their physical harm. This link is key in understanding the state of Islamophobia in Canada. We can’t claim to fight Islamophobia while in the imaginations of many Canadians, (prompted by some media and some politicians), Muslims still represent a threat to “us.” To fight this narrative and break the false premise that Muslims represent a threat to our national security, concrete actions should be undertaken by the new government. I consider the three following cases to be litmus tests for Prime Minister Trudeau to prove he is serious about his statement at the Islamophobia summit about what he said “next steps should be to continue building a country where everyone is welcome, safe, and respected.” Since 2008 until today, Hassan Diab’s case has remained in a legal limbo. In theory, Diab is a free man but with the real possibility to be extradited to France for another trial. Despite a French judge finding the evidence that he was in Lebanon at the time of the Synagogue attack which he is suspected of bombing in 1980, Diab’s case isn’t closed. Under the pressure of the family, victims and other advocacy groups, a new trial will open, and his extradition will once again be requested. What does Islamophobia have to do with it? Diab is a Canadian citizen of Muslim Lebanese descent. The fact that he is suspected in a case of Paris Synagogue bombing makes his case intertwined with the dangerous narrative of “violent Muslims.” The legal
treatment of his case showed many times a relentlessness in indicting him that can’t be explained other than by the regional origins and religion of Diab. Several times, the case of Hassan Diab has been compared to the case of Dreyfuss, a Jewish French military officer who was wrongly accused by his superior of treason because of the ambient antisemitism that prevailed French politics in the 19th Century. The prevalence of Islamophobia in France is very well documented. Diab found himself caught in those French politics. Sending an innocent person to France as a sacrificial lamb for some advocacy groups or to appease the French far-right national politics with another “Arab” conviction is wrong. With the recent nebulous statement by former justice minister David Lametti about changing our extradition laws, the case of Hassan Diab remains hanging between the hands of Canadian politicians. What is preventing the government from having enough courage to fight for the rights of one its own Muslim citizens?
In order to prove that all Canadians are treated the same and that he is serious about fighting Islamophobia, it is crucial that Prime Minister Trudeau call his Chinese counterpart and ask for the release of Huseyin Celil. There are at least 32 Canadians detained in the refugee camps in northeast Syria. The majority of them are women and children. Many European countries repatriated their citizens from those camps where diseases and violence are widespread. Despite former public safety minister Ralph Goodale having previously declared that Canada is gathering the legal tools and evidence required to prosecute whomever committed acts of violence during their time in Syria, whether they joined the arms of ISIS or found themselves in situations where they were forced to act against their will, almost nothing has been done by the Trudeau government. Recently, a lawsuit was filed by the families of 26 Canadians detained in these camps against the government to challenge this inertia and pressure the Canadian authorities to repatriate these Double standards for the two Michaels Canadians. Police say Liverpool attacker bought Biden, Xi discuss how to ‘align’ stances on Iran nuclear issue bomb parts for 6 months
LONDON -- The suspect who was killed in a Liverpool taxi explosion spent at least six months buying components for a bomb and appears to have acted alone, British police said Wednesday. Emad Al Swealmeen, 32, died when a blast ripped through the cab in which he was a passenger as it pulled up outside Liverpool Women’s Hospital on Sunday morning. The taxi driver was injured. Russ Jackson, the head of counterterrorism policing for northwest England, said Al Swealmeen had rented a property in the city in April and been making “relevant purchases” for a device at least since then. Jackson said investigators so far had not found any other people “of concern.” Detectives are also piecing together details
of Al Swealmeen’s life and say a relative told them he was born in Iraq. He applied for asylum in Britain in 2014, but was rejected, authorities said. It’s unclear what his legal status was at the time of the bombing. Police have also confirmed that Al Swealmeen was treated in the past for mental illness.Clergy at two Liverpool churches said Al Swealmeen had converted from Islam to Christianity and appeared to be sincere in his faith.Joy Gambardella, a lay reader at the city’s Emmanuel Church, said Al Swealmeen had been a “committed Christian”. “He used to love baking and he did a baking course. He also did pizza-making,” Gambardella said. “He used to make cakes for the church and sell them.“I would never, ever expect he could have done something like that, ever.” Investigators are still trying to determine the motive for the attack, and whether the Liverpool Women’s Hospital was the intended target. The taxi driver, David Perry, escaped from the vehicle before it was engulfed in flames. He was treated in a hospital and released. Britain’s official threat level was raised from substantial to severe -- meaning an attack is highly likely -- following the blast. Source: ctvnews.ca
Prosecution rests in US trial over Ahmaud Arbery’s killing
Prosecutor says defendants assumed the worst of Arbery before chasing and fatally shooting him. The prosecution has rested its case against the three men charged with murdering Ahmaud Arbery after presenting evidence it said shows that the defendants wrongly assumed that Arbery, a Black man, was the suspect of a crime in a mostly white southern Georgia neighbourhood. Several witnesses testified on Tuesday, including Dr Edmund Donoghue, a Georgia Bureau of Investigation medical examiner, who said Arbery was hit by two of the three shotgun rounds fired at him. “Is there anything law enforcement or EMS could have done to save his life at the scene?” prosecutor Linda Dunikoski asked the medical examiner. “I don’t think so. No,” Donoghue replied. Arbery, who was 25, was running through a neighbourhood in Brunswick, a coastal community 480km (300 miles) southeast of Atlanta, on February 23, 2020. Four people have died in Indian-administered Kashmir after a deadly raid by government forces on in the disputed region’s main city, police and families of the victims said on Tuesday. The region’s head of police, Vijay Kumar, said that alleged militants fired indiscriminately at police and soldiers when they cordoned off a business centre on Monday night in Srinagar, following a tip that they were hiding there. The ensuing clash led to the deaths of two civilians and two suspected fighters, Kumar told reporters on Tuesday. However, families of the slain civilians said Indian troops used them as human shields during the deadly standoff.
In three-and-half-hour exchange, Biden and Xi talk about Taiwan, strategic nuclear controls and global economic issues. United States President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping talked about how to harmonise their positions in the resumption of negotiations with Iran on reviving the 2015 nuclear deal, a top US official said on Tuesday. Officials from Iran and the six nations that struck the pact – the United Kingdom, China, France, Germany, Russia and the US – will meet in Vienna on November 29 to see if Tehran and Washington can agree to renew indirect talks on the UN-recognised agreement under which Iran curbed its nuclear program to gain relief from Western
economic sanctions. “The two presidents had the chance to talk about how we can align our perspectives heading into that meeting,” White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told a virtual audience in a web event hosted by the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC, on Tuesday. The Iran nuclear talks were just one of a range of issues confronting the US and China that Biden and Xi discussed in three and a half hours on November 15. In the most in-depth exchange since Biden took office as US president in January, the two covered tensions over Taiwan, strategic nuclear controls and global economic issues. Source: aljazeera.com

Al-Assad issues decree effectively sacking Syria’s Grand Mufti Ahmad Hassoun, the highest Islamic authority in Syria. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has issued a decree that effectively abolished the position of the republic’s grand mufti, without giving reasons for the decision. The decree issued on Monday delegated to the Council of Jurisprudence Scholars tasks that were previously entrusted to the mufti, including setting the start and end dates of the holy month of Ramadan and declaring religious decrees or fatwa. The decree also abolished Article 35 of a law regulating the power of the jurisprudential council and the work of the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs under the grand mufti, and strengthened the power of the council, headed by the minister of endowments. The decision effectively forces Syria’s Grand
Mufti Ahmad Badr al-Din Hassoun, the highest Islamic authority in Syria, into retirement. The has been wide speculation among the public around the reasons for al-Assad’s decision. It came days after Syria’s Jurisprudence Council issued harsh criticism of Hassoun’s interpretation of a set of Quranic verses during the funeral of famous Syrian singer Sabah Fakhri, who died earlier this month. Israel energy minister says UAE oil pipeline should be cancelled
Police said the civilians were killed in the crossfire and were identified as the shopping centre’s owner, Mohammad Altaf Bhat, and a trader, Mudassir Ahmed. The police chief said Ahmed, a dental surgeon and real estate dealer who had rented an office space in the building, was an overground worker, a term Indian authorities use for rebel sympathisers and their civilian supporters.Eyewitnesses and family members of the two killed civilians rejected the police account, saying the shopping centre owner and trader were picked up by troops after they had cordoned off the area and taken them inside the building in the presence of dozens of civilians. A shopkeeper, Nazir Ahmed, said government forces assembled dozens of the area’s shopkeepers and others in a showroom and snatched cellphones from them.He said later troops asked the shopping centre’s owner, Bhat, to accompany them inside the building, and the trader Ahmed also went with them. Abdul Majid, Bhat’s elder brother, said his brother was used as a human shield and killed in cold blood. Source: dawn.com
Israel’s energy minister has said a deal with partners from the United Arab Emirates to transport oil from the Gulf to Europe via Israel should be cancelled as it is too much of a risk environmentally. The opposition from Energy Minister Karine Elharrar on Tuesday raises doubts about whether the Israeli government will approve the deal, one of the biggest to emerge from the normalisation of ties between Israel and the UAE last year.. The deal was signed between Israel’s state-owned Europe-Asia Pipeline Company (EAPC) and MED-RED Land Bridge, a company with Emirati and Israeli owners. The idea was for oil to be unloaded from tankers in the Red Sea port of Eilat and then transferred across Israel in an existing pipeline to the Mediterranean coast. The companies involved say this land bridge is the shortest, most efficient and cost-effective route to transport oil from the Gulf to the West. But environmental groups, who have petitioned
Israel’s Supreme Court to freeze the deal, say the influx of tankers and crude oil is a huge ecological risk. “I am calling to cancel the EAPC agreement. It poses many risks to the Gulf of Eilat, to residents, and it does not benefit Israel’s energy market,” Elharrar said in a statement. She said UAE officials told her the deal should be viewed as an agreement between private companies and that cancelling it “is not expected to impact ties between the countries”. EAPC has said the new business is part of its routine operations and it met the strictest international standards. It also said the deal had geopolitical benefits.. Source: aljazeera.com

At a tense moment for Canada-U.S. relations, Trudeau travels to D.C. for trilateral talks Social Sharing Trudeau to raise trade, energy irritants with Biden at the first Three Amigos summit in five years. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will travel to Washington this week for the first Three Amigos summit in five years — a trilateral meeting with U.S. and Mexican leaders that has been dismissed in the past as high on symbolism and low on substance. The one-day summit comes at a challenging time for the Canada-U.S. relationship. The election of U.S. President Joe Biden was celebrated by many in Canada as the dawn of a new era in bilateral relations after the fractious four-year term of his predecessor, Donald Trump. During his campaign, Biden promised a return to “normalcy” and better relations with U.S. allies; the revival of the once-dormant Three Amigos gathering is a sign that the Trump-era froideur is over. But on Biden’s watch, a number of new irritants have emerged. Biden, more beholden to progressive elements in the Democratic Party than past presidents, has made climate policy
presidency, Biden cancelled permits for the Keystone XL pipeline, dealing a multi-billion dollar blow to Alberta’s oilpatch. He has done little to stop Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, from trying to shut down Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline — a crucial artery that supplies oil products and natural gas to power huge portions of the Canadian economy. ....Source: cbc.ca/news
Party insiders say Tory MPs would vote to expel caucus members who support petition launched by Sen. Batters Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole has kicked Saskatchewan Sen. Denise Batters out of the national caucus a day after she launched a petition calling for an expedited review of his leadership. “As the leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, I will not tolerate an individual discrediting and showing a clear lack of respect towards the efforts of the entire Conservative caucus, who are holding the corrupt and disastrous Trudeau government to account,” O’Toole said in a media statement late Tuesday. The statement was released shortly after Batters emerged from a virtual meeting of the Senate Conservative caucus. Batters launched the petition Monday, saying she and other party members have lost faith in O’Toole. She argued the party experienced “significant losses” in the fall campaign after O’Toole flip-flopped on major issues such as carbon pricing, firearms and conscience rights. She said she wants members to have a
say on O’Toole’s future prior to the planned 2023 party convention. Party rules require an automatic leadership review at the first national convention following a failed federal election campaign. Batters has said she wants that vote to happen in the next six months. “Mr. O’Toole flip-flopped on policies core to our party within the same week, the same day, and even within the same sentence. The members didn’t have a say on that, but we must have one on his leadership,” Batters said in a statement announcing the petition.Under the party’s constitution, a referendum on any matter can be launched if five per cent of Conservative members sign a petition calling on the party to poll the membership on the topic through a referendum. And, only a day after the anti-O’Toole effort was launched, a spokesperson for Batters said the petition has collected 2,000 signatures already. The break with Batters comes as Conservatives eager to keep O’Toole in his position gather support from caucus members to dump MPs who back the Saskatchewan senator’s petition.Senior Conservative sources with knowledge of caucus matters told CBC News that — in an attempt to discourage caucus members who are considering signing that petition — 24 Conservative MPs have pledged to sign a letter triggering the Reform Act, which would then enable a vote to expel members who back the Batters’ petition. FOI documents reveal NDP’s plan to dismantle private child care sector
VICTORIA (November 16, 2021) – A document obtained by the Official Opposition under Freedom of Information (FOI) reveals the NDP government’s blatant attempt to drive private child care providers out of business. In May 2021, the Minister of State for Child Care opted to discontinue the provision of grants for private child care operators for the New Spaces Fund and not create any additional incentive programs. “The NDP’s appalling decision to make it cost-prohibitive for private child care providers to operate is purely based on ideology, and families will end up paying the price for it,” said Karin Kirkpatrick, BC Liberal Critic for Children, Family Development and Childcare. “Private providers deliver 60,000 child care spaces in B.C. — half of the total — and are largely run by women. The minister needs to explain why she is deliberately targeting this group, and tell us how many spaces will be lost due to her government’s ideological intention to move away from market-based child care.” The document shows that in September 2020, the Priorities and Accountabilities Cabinet Committee approved the recommendation
How to register as an overseas Pakistani voter
that by year ten of the Childcare BC plan, only public organizations, Indigenous governments, and non-profits would be eligible for provincial child care space creation funding. As a result, space creation grants would no longer be available to for-profit providers. “The NDP has overpromised and underdelivered for years, and this again shows their ‘government knows best’ attitude,” added Kirkpatrick. “The minister should be building the sector with o perators instead of sabotaging private businesses, which have created 85 per cent of spaces under her mandate. Driving private providers out of the sector will only further escalate B.C.’s child care space shortage, and serve as a major setback to more affordable and accessible child care.” Source: Siyun Zeng BC Liberal Caucus

One confirmed dead in B.C. mudslide, cities continue to assess damage
One person has been confirmed dead while others are reported missing after a mudslide on a British Columbia highway, officials say. B.C. RCMP said in a statement Tuesday a woman’s body was recovered from the scene of the slide on Highway 99 between Pemberton and Lillooet. At least two people have been reported missing, and other occupied vehicles may have been caught up in the slide, which was located about nine kilometres north of Pemberton, according to the RCMP. he highway is still closed between Lil’wat Place and Seton Lake Road. Initial reports suggested about 50 vehicles were trapped, some of which may have been carried away. ‘AVOID ALL TRAVEL TO ABBOTSFORD’ Meanwhile, B.C.’s transportation ministry is advising residents to “avoid travel to Abbotsford and the surrounding areas” due to the city being under a state of emergency and extensive flooding causing damage to roadways in the Fraser Valley. “Emergency crews [are] dealing with exten-
sive flooding and any additional traffic volume will hamper their efforts,” the ministry stated through its DriveBC Twitter account. “Highways are closed until further notice.” Abbotsford issued a local state of emergency Monday due to “several localized emergencies” because of the flooding. The city’s mayor said the alert will stay in place for seven days, unless it’s called off earlier. Schools in Abbotsford were also closed Tuesday. In addition, certain parts of the Straiton and Sumas Prairie areas were ordered to evacuate on Monday and Tuesday. Source: ctvnews.ca/

VANCOUVER - The leader of the B.C. Green Party has called out the provincial government, saying more should have been done to sound the alarm and alert British Columbians to the serious danger posed by the weekend storm. In question period Tuesday, Sonia Furstenau pointed out that communities just south of the border in Washington State arranged for sandbags for areas expected to be hit hard by the storm, but the approach in B.C. seemed less proac-
tive and more reactionary. “These weather events are more extreme, they’re more serious, and they have the capacity to create more harm and damage than weather events in the past,” Furstenau said in an interview with CTV News. One person has died after being trapped in a mudslide, at least two others are missing, and hundreds spent the night stranded in their vehicles on impassable highways. Source: bc.ctvnews.ca/

By: Khadija Nadeem Gr 10 n Friday, November 5th, some 50, 000 spectators attended the sold out Astroworld Festival by Travis Scott. In the final 30 seconds before Travis Scott came onto stage, spectators pushed forward in excitement leaving many crushed between bodies and unable to breathe. 50 minutes into the show, rapper Drake joined Scott onstage sending the crowd into another frenzy. With a short farewell, Scott left not only his stage once finished, but also the sea of partygoers who
spread word of the tragedy that had occurred. By the end of the 70 minutes the headliner was on stage, the show left 9 dead. The outrage and controversy around this is that after many realized and found spectators dead, they shouted to stop the show but Scott continued his performance until the end of his set. 8 dead the day of, the ninth the day after with 25 people hospitalized ranging from ages 9-27. Authorities reported that some people had even been trampled but what fans want to know is why Scott or his staff didn’t stop the show. Another circling narrative was that some individual was injecting others with drugs and many other concerns that have remained a constant at the rapper’s shows. Travis Scott is now facing not only legal repercussions but also backlash
from his fanbase, whose cries were ignored by security. Him and his wife both made public but vague statements about the event, the victims, and their families. Now, the public waits to see how Scott will deal with the consequences of this tragedy.
‘Under attack’: Canadian health-care workers call for more protection from harassment and threats
By: Adam Miller · CBC News
G
overnments, regulators and social media platforms need to do more, advocates say Antisemitism, racism, misogyny, unfounded character assassinations and disturbing threats of physical violence and even death. Those are just some of the daily hate-filled messages sent to Canadian front-line health-care workers, public health advocates, academics and experts speaking out on the benefit of COVID-19 vaccines and against misinformation. One health-care worker told CBC News under condition of anonymity that they received a suspicious package at
their place of work that led to an evacuation. Another discussed the debilitating mental health issues they developed as a direct result of the volume and intensity of personal attacks and the dozens of baseless professional complaints made against them. When protesters stormed Canadian hospitals this summer to berate health-care workers and oppose vaccine mandates and other public health restrictions, widespread condemnation from politicians and the public was swift. But a disturbing rise in aggressive online harassment of health-care workers across Canada has been largely met with inaction, prompting calls for governments, regulators and social media companies to do more to protect those on the front lines. “We often like to think that we’re not like our neighbours to the south,” said Dr. Naheed Dosani, a physician and health-justice advocate in Toronto. “But this pandemic has shown that there’s a lot of hate in this country.”.. 4th Round of Bilateral Political Consultations Held Between Pakistan and Canada
T
he 4th Round of Bilateral Political Consultations (BPC) between Pakistan and Canada was held this evening. Foreign Secretary Sohail Mahmood led the Pakistan delegation while the Canadian side was led by Deputy Foreign Minister Marta Morgan. During the BPC, a wide-range of bilateral relations as well as regional and multilateral issues of mutual interest were discussed. Warmly welcoming the delegation, Foreign Secretary noted that Prime Minister Imran Khan and Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi had conveyed congratulatory messages to their respective Canadian counterparts following the recent elections. He noted that Pakistan and Canada had enjoyed a longstanding, friendly and cordial rela-
tionship. He underscored that Pakistan was committed to develop a broader and multifaceted partnership with Canada, with a particular focus on trade and investment. The Foreign Secretary highlighted that Pakistan was firmly focusing on imperatives of geo-economics and pursuing policies that would promote peace, development partnerships, and regional connectivity. The Foreign Secretary apprised his counterpart of Pakistan’s facilitative investment and trade regime and invited Canadian companies to invest in Pakistan and seek dividends from a large consumer market and robust economic opportunities in the country and the region. Foreign Secretary Sohail Mahmood underlined that, as COVID-19 situation was improving, it was imperative that the high-level exchanges between both countries were resumed and the vast potential of bilateral ties was fully realized. The Foreign Secretary highlighted the positive contribution of large Pakistani diaspora in Canada, forming a strong bridge between the two countries. He maintained that there was need to facilitate people-topeople movement between the two coun-
tries and hoped that more Pakistani students will be able to travel to Canada under the Student Direct Stream Programme. He particularly emphasized that, given major improvement in the security situation, Canada may revise its Travel Advisory enabling people to travel across both countries and the businesses to grow. In the regional context, the Foreign Secretary shared Pakistan’s perspective on the latest developments in Afghanistan and underscored the importance of continued and positive engagement of the international community with Afghanistan for lasting peace and stability. The Foreign Secretary underlined the urgent humanitarian and economic challenges in Afghanistan and stressed the need for immediate steps to mitigate the sufferings of the Afghan people. The release of Afghanistan’s financial assets was another step that would be helpful in this regard. He also cautioned against the forces that could play the role of “spoilers”. The Foreign Secretary also highlighted Pakistan’s perspective on issues of peace and stability in Asia, including the Jammu &
Kashmir dispute. The Canadian Deputy Foreign Minister noted that Pakistan was a longstanding friend and reaffirmed Canada’s desire to build a multifaceted relationship with Pakistan with increased people-to-people exchanges. She deeply appreciated Pakistan’s assistance in the evacuation of Canadian nationals from Afghanistan and lauded Pakistan’s role in efforts for bringing peace and stability in Afghanistan. The two sides affirmed their commitment to remain constructively and meaningfully engaged to further reinforce Pakistan-Canada bilateral relations. aged real estate agent and performer, Rahat Khwaja, whose life capsizes after a guest at a wedding films him sensually swaying to an old Pakistani song, “Zindagi Tamasha” (the film is named after the song) as he sings it for the audience. The video goes viral and Khwaja, who is respected in his crowded quarter for his singing of devotional Islamic poems, is suddenly viewed by his community as vulgar. Religious events where he once starred as an esteemed singer are now off limits – he is literally pushed out of one event by other performers who are enraged by his wedding performance. He finds his face plastered across tawdry memes on the internet. Children who once loved him for the sweets he handed out in their crowded alley call him a pig and a pimp. A cleric threatens to accuse him of blasphemy – which can be a deadly accusation in Pakistan. Worse, his beloved daughter turns against him. The film was banned in Pakistan after an extremist religious group watched the trailer and became enraged at its portrayal of the cleric in the movie. Not only does he loosely hurl accusations of blasphemy against the protagonist, the cleric is painted as a sneering, arrogant man who turns a blind eye to child sex abuse in his seminary, even as he leads the charge to shame the protagonist. And the group rallied against the director.

What’s wrong with criticising Hasan Ali’s performance? Australia beat New Zealand by eight wickets to win T20 World Cup
Pakistan’s run to the semi-final of the World Cup 2021 has been an enlightening experience. The five-match winning run that came to an abrupt halt on Thursday night in Dubai has taught us some incredible lessons that demonstrate the confused state of our national intellect. It’s one thing to stoop low and denigrate a player’s personality and private life, or even
attempt to cause damage to his well-being. There should be zero tolerance for all those things. That said, since when has it become a sin to critique a tournament-long show of mediocrity that culminated in an act that derailed the entire campaign? Since when has it become okay to not condemn the fact that a bowler leaked 207 runs across 23 overs in six matches and picked up just five wickets? And since when has it become a crime to question why a bowler who had seemed out of sorts the entire tournament was continuously retained despite one show of mediocrity after another? The argument, and a rather shallow one, is made that Hasan was Pakistan’s best bowler since returning from a serious injury that sidelined him for more than a year. Source: dawn.com
. Mitchell Marsh smashed an unbeaten 77 as Australia hammered New Zealand by eight wickets to clinch their maiden Twenty20 World Cup title on Sunday. Chasing 173 for victory, Australia depended on a 92-run second-wicket stand between David Warner, who made 53, and Marsh to achieve their target with seven balls to spare in Dubai. Warner became Trent Boult’s second wicket but Marsh kept up the charge to power Australia home to their long-awaited T20 crown
and add to their five 50-over World Cup trophies. Glenn Maxwell, who made 28, joined Marsh, who hit six fours and four sixes in his 50-ball knock, to put on 66 runs and hit the winning boundary as the Aussies came charging in to celebrate the triumph. Source: dawn.com
