The price of gasoline at the retail level has hit record highs across the country this week, with drivers in British Columbia seeing prices soar past $2.10 per litre over the weekend. Economists, fuel experts and politicians have agreed prices are rising because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. But B.C. gets most of its gasoline from Burnaby, Edmonton and Washington state — so why does supply from Russia matter? Here’s an explanation. First off, why is gas so expensive? Gasoline is made from crude oil, the cost of which is determined globally. The cost is influenced by international supply and demand or geopolitical events. Crude prices were already high before Russia invaded Ukraine but

But B.C. gets most of its oil from nearby refineries. Why does losing Russian supply matter? Most of the gasoline in B.C. comes from refineries in Burnaby, Edmonton and Washington state, but the selling price of the oil going into those refineries is still decided by the global market. NATO chief warns Russia away from attacking supply lines supporting Ukraine

S

toltenberg says ‘any attack against any ... NATO territory’ would trigger self-defence clause NATO’s secretary general has warned that a Russian attack on the supply lines of allied nations supporting Ukraine with arms and munitions would be a dangerous escalation of the war raging in eastern Europe. Jens Stoltenberg made the remarks Tuesday in an interview with CBC News as he, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the leaders of Spain and Latvia visited NATO’s base and training range at Adazi, outside Latvia’s capital Riga. “The allies are helping Ukraine uphold their right for self defence, which is enshrined in the UN charter,” Stoltenberg said after a meeting with Trudeau, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Latvian Prime Minister Arturs Krišjānis Kariņš at the Adazi base. “Russia is the aggressor and Ukraine is defending itself. If there is any attack against any NATO country, NATO territory, that will trigger Article 5.” Article 5 is the self-defence clause in NATO’s founding treaty which states that an attack on one member is an attack on all 30 member nations.“I’m absolutely convinced President Putin knows this and we are removing any room for miscalculation, misunderstanding about our commitment to de-

fend every inch of NATO territory,” Stoltenberg said. The United States and its allies, including Canada, have been

engaged in a race against time to send weapons and ammunition to Ukraine, which has been under relentless assault from Russian forces for over two weeks. Some in the U.S. intelligence community fear that Moscow might try to cut off the flow of arms going into Ukraine, either with airstrikes or with long-range artillery. The weapons coming from the West are unloaded in border countries, such as Poland, and then shipped by land. Stoltenberg said there’s a clear distinction between supply lines within Ukraine and those operating outside its borders.“There is a war going on in Ukraine and, of course, supply lines

inside Ukraine can be attacked,” he said.

Association of Islamic Charitable Projects Celebration celebrates Isra’ & Mi^raj-un-Nabi

O

n March 5, The Association of Islamic Charitable Projects commemorated the miracle of Isra’ & Mi^raj, one of the greatest miracles Allah ta^ala has granted our master Muhammad ‫ ﷺ‬and blessed his nation with, in its center in New West The program was well attended by Muslim from all over the region. The event included recitation from the Holy Qur’an followed by touching Islamic chants praising Allah and His Messenger(Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. In such a glorious occasion and in the pres-

F

rom al-Masjid al-Aqsa the Mi^raj (Ascension) started; the Prophet ascended to heaven on stairs, called al-mirqat. Those stairs are veiled from us. He then saw, in the first heaven, Prophet Adam who welcomed him and made supplication for him for good things. Then the Prophet ascended to the second heaven in which he saw Proph-

ence of a diverse crowd the speakers needed to emphasize the greatness and the purpose of this miracle. His Prominence Shaykh Abdur-Rahman Sulayman, Imam of Masjid Ahulus-Sunnah wal Jama^ah –New Westminster- made clear that Allah granted His Messenger this great miracle of Isra’ and Mi^raj to honor him (SAW) by showing him the wonders that Allah created as stated clearly in The Glorious Qur’an in Surat al-Isra’, Verse# 1 that means “ To show him of our wonders”. Since the belief of

the Muslims is that Allah exists without a place; therefore, it is but natural that the Ascension of the Prophet to the heavens [The Mi^raj] never meant that Allah is there or above it or sitting on the Throne. Allah created places so He does not need any (subhanahu wa ta^ala). Shaykh Sulayman also refuted several false claims that some relate to this miracle and supported his argument with evidence from the Qur’an, the Hadith and the sayings of the reliable scholars. He confirmed that Al-Isra’ and Al-Mi^raj took

place during one night with his [the Prophet’s] body and soul and while being awake; and it was angel Jibril who came close to the Prophet and not Allah ta^ala. On this great occasion, the AICP asks Allah to grant Muslims peace and tranquility, unity and adherence to the rules of the religion. We ask Allah to bestow on us the bounty of entering Paradise without torture and being with Prophet Muhammad sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam. Reported By: Imad Nouri(AICP)

ets ^Isa and Yahya. The Prophet ascended to the third heaven where he found Prophet Yusuf. Then the Prophet ascended to the fourth heaven where he found Prophet Idris. In the fifth heaven, the Prophet encountered Harun, the brother of Prophet Musa. In the sixth heaven, he encountered Prophet Musa. Each of these Prophets received Prophet

Muhammad with a warm welcome and made supplication (du^a’) for him for good things. Then the Prophet ascended to the seventh heaven, and that is where our Messenger saw Prophet Ibrahim. Prophet Ibrahim is the best of the prophets after our Prophet, Muhammad. Prophet Ibrahim had his back against al-Bayt al-Ma^mur when the Prophet saw him. To the inhabitants of the skies, al-Bayt al-Ma^mur is like the Ka^bah is to us, the inhabitants of the earth. Every day 70,000 angels go there, exit from it and never return. On the next day, another 70,000 angels would go, come out, and never return and so on. In the seventh heaven, Prophet Muhammad saw Sidrat al-Muntaha, an extremely beautiful tree. In Paradise, the Prophet saw some of the bounties Allah prepared for the inhabitants of Paradise. He saw the Hur ul-^In: non-human nor jinn females whom Allah created. They are in Paradise and will be married to whom Allah willed. The Prophet saw the wildan ul-mukhalla-

dun: these are non-human, jinn, nor angels creations of Allah. They are a very beautiful creation of Allah whose appearance is like sprinkled pearls. They are servants of the inhabitants of Paradise. The Prophet saw the Throne (^Arsh) which is the ceiling of Paradise. The Throne is the largest creation in size. Allah did not create anything bigger in size than it. Allah ta^ala the Creator of everything does not need it, nor does He need to sit on it. Allah exists without a place because He created the places so He does not need them. The seven heavens and the earth in comparison to the Kursiyy are like a ring thrown in a desert, and the Kursiyy in comparison to the Throne is like a ring thrown in a desert. The seven heavens and the earth in comparison to the Throne are like a seed of mustard compared to the ocean. Allah created the Throne as a sign of His Power and He did not create the Throne to sit on it. Imam ^Aliyy may Allah raise his rank said: “Allah created the ^Arsh as an indication for His Power, and He did not take it as a place for Himself.” By: Imad Nouri(AICP)

Penny Appeal Canada is an International Relief and Development Organization working in over 30 countries around the world. They have a 100% Zakat policy, which means no administration fees are taken by the Canadian Office, rather ⅛ of the Zakat is only taken by the field implementers as mentioned by Allah SWT in the Qur’an. However, the main theme of the night revolved around the idea that although there is much work to do globally, we must also take care of our brothers and sisters here at home first. To help those at home, Penny Appeal Canada has a grants program for smaller registered charities and non-profit organizations to increase capacity and delivery of their

programs to those in need. They also discussed how every community across Canada has varying needs, and the ability of Penny Appeal Canada to customize programming based on those needs. Penny Appeal Canada’s COO, Akber Ali said, “At the end of the day, the needs of the Halifax Muslim Community, Toronto Muslim Community, Calgary Muslim Community, and Vancouver Muslim Community differ. We must tackle the needs of each community differently, and work in collaboration with those who are already doing great work on the front lines. This is how we are going to build self sustainable communities that will thrive for generations to come.”

For their international projects, the theme focused on long term sustainability for individuals and communities. Instead of handing out a food pack every month, teach a person how to farm. Instead of delivering programming to communities in need on a monthly basis, find a way to start a business and give our Muslim brothers and sisters their dignity back. It was a very inspiring evening that talked about collaboration, long term sustainability, their 100% Zakat Policy and how they plan to work with everyone to build a self sustainable thriving community here in Vancouver and abroad. Why is Russia actually invading Ukraine?

By: Khadija Nadeem Miracle’s writer n February 24th, President Putin declared Russia could not feel “safe, develop, and exist” because of what he claimed was a constant threat from modern Ukraine. And so began Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. For months, the Russian president denied any invasion but then, launched a devastating attack on Ukraine, a European, democratic, country sharing a border with Russia. Russia’s forces are bombing city centers and closing in on the capital, Kyiv, uprooting civilian lives. Putin stands accused of shattering the peace of Europe as many believe the next series of events could threaten the entire security structure of the continent. Warplanes have bombed, and Russian forces have seized control of key cities. Meanwhile, Russia refuses to even use terms such as invasion or war, claiming their goal is to protect their own country from the “militarization” and “Nazification” of Ukraine. But why is Russia actually invading Ukraine? Well, the answer is a combination of multiple fac-

O

tors. One large reason has to do with NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) and the USSR (Union of Soviet Social Republics). Previously, Ukraine was a part of the USSR (Soviet Union) along with Russia as one large state. Before the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1990, NATO and the west had promised that they would not expand to the east. Of course, at present time, we know there are discussions of Ukraine joining NATO, this is one of the things Russia is upset about. Additionally, President Putin strongly believes that the collapse of the Soviet Union caused the disintegration of “historical Russia” and that Ukraine and Russia are one nation. It’s clear that Russia wishes for Ukraine to be a part of Russia once more because of historical and cultural factors but also because an independent Ukraine means a loss for Russia. Not only does Russia demand that Ukraine never join NATO, but they also want NATO to retract any and all expansion previously done in the east like they promised they wouldn’t. As for those cultural factors, in 2014 Russia annexed Crimea, an area many refer to as occu-

pied Ukrainian territory. Russia was adamant about having Crimea as part of its republic because it wanted to “protect ethnic Russians” from the ideals and assimilation of Ukraine. Formally, the Crimean region is still considered Ukrainian territory. From a completely different perspective, some experts believe Putin hopes to invade and take over multiple parts of Europe, in an effort to rebuild and expand the Soviet Union. This would reassert Putin’s power and influence across Europe as well as secure his legacy, which are all things Putin seems to be concerned with. Many worry that these actions will lead to a third world war and obviously, it’s very possible but then why hasn’t anyone interfered yet? Well, first of all, the USA and other European countries are very known for getting involved in wars they have no place being a part of. Just recently, the USA was finally getting backlash for their military involvement in Afghanistan and was ridiculed after their evacuation. This is one of the reasons we’ve seen no direct international involvement, no one wants to get involved in

a war that, so far, has nothing to do with them. Furthermore, involvement in a war can cost a lot and not just monetarily. Right now, many countries are waiting to see how this plays out before getting involved or sending troops on the ground. It’s possible that in such a fragile and delicate situation, the wrong move could trigger just what everyone wants to avoid, another world war. Through his tendencies and demonstrations as a leader, it’s plausible that Putin is willing to go to war for what he desires, in fact, it’s possible he may have been planning for it. Right now, world leaders are planning and preparing for whatever may come next and we as a community and society must also play our part. Stay informed on the situation, the relevancy applies to us independently and as a collective. Donate if you can, but also make sure the finds are actually getting to those who need it. Most importantly, keep the people of Ukraine in your prayers and pray for their safety. Laysa Lil Insana illa ma’ sa’aa That man can have nothing but what he strives for.

The History of Daylight Saving Time NDP wants long term solutions for women The first iteration of Daylight Saving Time was officially implemented two years into the working in healthcare and child care

The end of Daylight Saving Time, often mistakenly referred to as Daylight Savings Time, marks an additional hour of sleep for many Canadians. The practice of adjusting our clocks occurs twice a year when clocks jump ahead one hour on the second Sunday in March and back one hour on the first Sunday in November. While turning the clocks forward and back is a concept that dates back centuries, what is the history of Daylight Saving Time and how did this practice begin? In 1895, George Hudson, an entomologist from New Zealand, first proposed the idea of a two-hour time shift so he could have more after-work hours of sunshine in the summer. While no change came into effect after Hudson’s suggestion, the idea resurfaced again a few decades later in Germany. In 1915, the German government began brainstorming ways to save energy for battle during the First World War. During this time, they needed their citizens to reduce the use of artificial light and conserve scarce resources like fossil fuels. Their solution was to have more daylight during working hours by pushing the clocks forward one hour in the springtime. It was believed that adjusting the time would encourage people to use less energy to light up their homes and reserve important resources for the war.

First World War in Germany. After Germany established this practice, almost every other country that fought in the war followed suit, including Canada, the United States and much of Europe. In 1918, the Canadian government formally introduced Daylight Saving Time as a way to increase production during wartime. With the end of the First World War, the federal government ceased Daylight Saving Time, but resumed the practice during the Second World War. During the Second World War, Daylight Saving Time was used all year round in Canada. While the concept of Daylight Saving Time originated with the principle of saving energy, today, critics say that there are still other ways to consume energy, including watching TV, running fans, using heaters and driving. According to critics, these energy-consuming activities will occur regardless of whether an hour of daylight is saved or not. Today, not all jurisdictions in Canada and the United States observe Daylight Saving Time. Saskatchewan, the Yukon, Arizona and parts of Northern BC are places where this practice is not recognized. In BC, the Creston Valley-Kootenay Lake area, specifically Yahk, Creston and Crawford, observe Mountain Standard Time (MST) all year round. To this day, the time change is often subject to debate for British Columbians across the province, and BC’s NDP government has even pledged to eliminate it. Debate has also spread to the United States as many states on the west coast are considering permanent year-round Daylight Saving Time. Only time will tell whether Daylight Saving Time is here to stay. Source: ucanwest.ca

In the days following her mother’s April 1998 murder, Rupy Sidhu spoke to the media pleading for information about the killer or killers who shot Baljit Kondolay in the driveway of their Langley, B.C., home. Sidhu was just 18 years old at the time. Her mother was 37. Now, 24 years years later, she’s speaking out again, as Sukhjit Grewall, the man who fired the deadly shots in a plot orchestrated by his father, who was also Kondolay’s new husband, is applying for day parole.“His father, the mastermind behind the murder, was so far in debt that he coerced an innocent woman, married her, had her change her will and her insurance policies to make him the sole beneficiary just so he could get out of debt. He put a price on my mother’s life,” said Sidhu from her

home in Calgary. Both father and son were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years, and an accomplice was convicted of second-degree murder. Sidhu has just learned the younger Grewall applied for work release and day parole from Mission Institution, and has a hearing in July. “I’m angry. I’m sad. I’m really pissed off. When the parole board allows offenders like him to submit these applications, they don’t realize that they are re-opening the wounds of the victims,” said Sidhu. She fears if Grewall gets out of prison, he will re-offend. “He has not earned that right. He will never earn that right to be released again,” she said. Sidhu has launched a petition and plans to speak to the parole board during the hearing in July. And she will do the same if Ajit Grewall also applies for parole. “I’ll respond to that the same way, especially because he was the mastermind behind it,” she said. “He had his son shoot my mom twice in the head. I’m not staying quiet.”Sidhu says her mother made the strong woman she is today, and will never stop speaking out about the men who killed her for money. “I think my mom would be very proud. I love her, I always will,“ she said. “I’m going to be there for her.” Source:bc.ctvnews.ca

Women in care-based professions have been working to exhaustion to take care of us and our loved ones, NDP MP says they deserve government support PORT MOODY – As International Women’s Day is celebrated across the country, NDP MP Bonita Zarrillo has initiated a study into how the government can better support workers in healthcare and child care who are predominantly women. Thanks to Zarrillo’s work, a Parliamentary committee has begun studying the labour shortages and workers’ conditions for healthcare workers, personal support workers, and childcare workers among others who have been on the frontlines of COVID-19. “Women make up a disproportionate number of front-line health care workers, personal support workers and those delivering childcare. Without their work, Canadians would not have gotten through the pandemic as well as we did,” said Zarrillo. “During the pandemic, the government said these workers were ‘heroes.’ Yet these heroes— particularly women of colour and new immigrants— have been persistently undervalued, under-paid, and over-burdened. We need to stand with them all the time, not just

in times of crisis. This study will look at how the Liberals’ policy and investments match their words when it comes to helping these workers. New Democrats know we have to invest in the people who take care of us when we’re sick. We have to support the people who take care of our loved ones. And these people are predominantly women.” Since the beginning of the pandemic, the NDP has been calling for an increase to health care transfers to address the staffing shortages of nurses and other essential health care workers. New Democrats have also repeatedly called for the government to ensure more internationally accredited health care professionals can join the Canadian work force to help address the labour shortages. NDP MPs have long been urging the government to bring in national standards of care for long-term care facilities to protect our loved ones and to make sure the workers we rely on to take care of our loved ones have the tools they need and are paid a decent wage.“On International Women’s Day, it isn’t good enough to say ‘we recognize the contributions that women are making.’ We need the federal government to back up that talk with action. Women shouldn’t be working themselves into exhaustion taking care of our loved ones because the government won’t address labour shortages,” added Zarrillo. “Women deserve better and New Democrats will keep pushing the government to collaborate with the provinces and territories and implement long-term investments in women, and in health care and childcare.”. History of Muslims in Ukraine, Belarus and Russia

By: Judith Gabriel Through the eyes of Ibn Fadlan:

M

ore than a millennium ago, as fleets of Viking raiders were striking fear into the hearts of coast- and river-dwellers throughout western Europe, other Norsemen of more mercantile inclination were making their way east. With no less boldness and stamina, bearing luxurious furs and enticing nodules of amber, they penetrated the vast steppes of what is today Ukraine, Belarus and Russia and entered Central Asia. There they met Muslim traders who paid for Norse wares with silver coins, which the Vikings themselves did not mint, and which they coveted. Their routes were various, and by the ninth and 10th centuries, a regular trade network had grown up. Some Norsemen traveled overland and by river, while others sailed over both the Black and Cas-

pian Seas, joined caravans and rode camelback as far as Baghdad, which was then under Abbasid rule and populated by nearly a million souls. There, the Scandinavian traders found an emporium beyond their wildest dreams, for their fjord-rimmed homelands had only recently seen the emergence of a few rudimentary towns. To the Arabs of Baghdad, the presence of the Norsemen probably did not come as much of a surprise, for the Arabs were long accustomed to meeting people from different cultures and civilizations. They were also keen and literate observers. Abbasid historians and caliphal envoys put to paper eyewitness accounts of the roving Scandinavians, leaving a historical legacy that is shedding new light both on Viking history and on a little-known chapter of early Islamic history. From the time of the first Viking attacks on England in the late eighth century, the 300year epoch known as the Viking Age found the Scandinavians venturing farther afield than any other Europeans. They colonized nearly the entire North Atlantic, even establishing a short-lived settlement in North America about the turn of the millennium. It was largely the Vikings from Norway and Denmark who made these western voyages, but waves of so-called “Eastern

Vikings,” predominantly Swedes, headed southeast to establish trading centers at Kiev and Novgorod, where the elite among them became princes and rulers. It was in these lands that they were observed by several Muslim historians. The Arab writers did not call the tall, blond traders “Vikings,” but by the ethnonym Rus (pronounced “Roos”). The origin of this term is obscure, and though some claim it stems from the West Finnic name for Sweden, Ruotsi, there is little agreement. Yet consistently, Byzantine and Arab writers referred to the Swedish traders and settlers, as well as the local populations among whom they settled and intermarried, as Rus, and this is the source of the modern name of Russia. This name was applied only in the East. In France and Sicily, the Vikings were known as Normans. An elite guard of the Byzantine emperors, composed of eastern Scandinavians, was known as Varangians, but that term never came into widespread use outside

the region. In al-Andalus, or Islamic Spain, they were known as al-majus, or “fireworshippers” a pejorative reference to their paganism. Besides the Scandinavians themselves, only the British called the marauders “Vikings,” and this word may come from vik, or bay, and Viken, as Oslo Fjord was called, from which the earliest Viking ships emerged. Other authorities maintain that the name came from the Old Norse term i viking, which is the equivalent of “a-raiding,” as in “they went a-raiding down the Atlantic coast.” But “Viking” was never a blanket term for the whole people of the region until it became a popular, modern misuse. “We can refer to Viking-Age society, but not all Scandinavians were Vikings,” says Jesse Byock, who is professor of Old Norse literature at the University of California at Los Angeles. “They themselves used the term to refer to raiders from the region, but it certainly didn’t describe the local farmers who were back on the land.”..Source: islamicity.org

40% of Vancouver’s Generation Z adults expect 1st Main handler of Peshawar suicide bomber home to be co-owned, real estate survey suggests among 3 killed in operation: police

More than a third of Generation Z adults living in Vancouver expect they’ll co-own their first home with someone else like friends or family, a recent survey suggests. The Generation Z Report, released by Sotheby’s International Real Estate and the Mustel Group Wednesday, looks at how that age group is preparing for home ownership across the country. It suggests 37 per cent of Canadian Generation Z adults, which included those aged 18 to 28, living in urban areas expect they’ll be able to purchase their first home in less than five years. Even in Metro Vancouver’s expensive and challenging real estate market, that percentage is only slightly lower, at 36 per cent. Forty-three per cent of

those surveyed expect they’ll buy a home in five to 10 years. “The influence of Generation Z is rising with each passing year, and their impact on Canada’s real estate market is set to be substantial,” said Josh O’Neill, general manager of Mustel Group, in a news release. “Results from this survey reveal the high level of confidence that young Canadians have in housing and demonstrate how they are overcoming financial barriers to attain home ownership.” Sotheby’s report also says 62 per cent of those polled plan to use their personal savings as the main funding for their down payment. Financial gifts, loans outside of a mortgage, selling financial assets and family inheritance were also listed as leading down payment sources. Even so, a significant portion expect they won’t own their homes alone. The report says 27 per cent of those surveyed reported their first home will likely be co-owned with a family member. That figure is slightly higher than Generation Z residents of other urban communities, where 24 per cent expect to coown with family. Source: ctvnews.ca

Fines issued after plane with Russian nationals on board grounded in Yellowknife

YELLOWKNIFE -- Transport Canada says a plane carrying two Russian nationals that was grounded in Yellowknife last week broke airspace restrictions. It says the plane’s two pilots and the Russian who chartered the plane each have been fined $3,000, while the Genevabased aircraft operator has been fined $15,000. Transport Canada said the plane is not Russian-owned or operated, but it still broke Canadian aviation regulations Transport Canada immediately began an investigation to determine whether any violations of the airspace restrictions occurred.“As a result of this investigation, it has been determined that the aircraft, although not Russian-owned or registered, had, in fact, operated contrary to the airspace restrictions announced on Feb. 27, 2022,” Transport Canada said in a statement. Canada closed its airspace to Russian-owned or operated aircraft on that day due to Russia’s attack on Ukraine. Transport Canada said the plane has been cleared to leave Yellowknife, but without any passengers.

“The department will not hesitate to take further enforcement action should additional incidents of non-compliance with the regulations and restrictions be found,” the statement said. The plane was on its way to the High Arctic when it was grounded March 1. Those on board were planning to take an overland expedition to Nunavut in all-terrain vehicles. The two Russians have not been identified, but the territory’s transport minister, Diane Archie, told the legislative assembly they are part of a project called TransGlobal Car Expedition. The N.W.T. government has also said it did not know who was on board the plane until it was grounded.Source:ctvnews.ca

Russia-Ukraine live news: Temporary ceasefire declared

Peshawar police on Wednesday claimed to have killed the main handler and two other accomplices of the suicide bomber who blew himself up in a Shia mosque located in city’s Kocha Risaldar area last week. Peshawar Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Ijaz Khan confirmed the development to Dawn.com and said that the trio were eliminated during a joint operation carried out by the Counter Terrorism Department and Khyber police in the district’s border areas on the night between Tuesday and Wednesday. In the operation, he said, the main handler of the attacker who “received him in the provincial capital, provided him stay and guided

him” was killed. The CCPO added that the operation was carried out on the basis of a tip-off and the slain terrorists were also involved in other terror activities. The blast had shaken Peshawar’s Kocha Risaldar area on Friday last week, killing 63 people and injuring several others. CCPO Khan said while the suicide bomber had been identified, further investigations into the incident were under way. The city police chief said that some facilitators of the bomber had also been arrested with the help of CCTV footage. Initial investigation reveals that the bomber had a form-B (birth certificate) issued by the National Database and Registration Authority, he said, adding that his residential address was of Peshawar. “His (the bomber) family members also have Pakistani documents,” Khan said. However, all these documents were probably acquired on the basis of fake information, the CCPO said, adding that further investigation would make the situation clearer. Source: dawn.com

LONDON -- Canada poked Russia in the eye on Monday by sanctioning 10 people identified by Vladimir Putin’s top domestic opponent as the federal government works with allies to hammer Russia’s economy in response to that country’s invasion of Ukraine. But Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in London at the start of a four-country visit to Europe, conceded cutting off Russia’s lucrative oil and gas exports entirely is not as simple for Europe as it was for Canada. Trudeau, his British host Boris Johnson and their Dutch counterpart Mark Rutte did their best to project solidarity with Ukraine in the face of the unrelenting Russian invasion. Trudeau added 10 names to the growing list of Russians on Canada’s sanctions list -- people whose assets in Canada are frozen and with whom Canadian financial institutions can no longer do business. This time, Trudeau said the names of former and current government officials, oligarchs and supporters of Putin, “come from a list compiled by jailed opposition leader Alexei Navalny.” “These sanctions put increased pressure on Russia’s leadership, including on Putin’s inner circle,” said the prime minister. The three leaders chose a historic setting to kick off their talks: the Royal Air Force Station Northolt outside of London, which played a key role in the Battle of Britain that ultimately saved the island nation from a Nazi Germany bombardment in Second World War.But Canada, Britain and

their NATO allies are not keen to repeat the history of that great air battle any time soon. They have rejected desperate Ukrainian pleas for a no-fly zone to protect their civilians from Russian bombardment because they fear it could start a new world war if they engage with Russian planes. They are instead taking a sledgehammer to the Russian economy and to the personal wealth of oligarchs with heavy influence in the government, hoping it will devastate Putin’s ability to fund his invasion and convince his inner circle to pressure him to end the war. Trudeau said the unity of the approach surprised Putin. But that unity is being tested when it comes to Russian oil and gas. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said over the weekend there needs to be even more sanctions, including stopping the flow of oil and gas out of Russia. “Stop Putin. Stop buying Russian oil. Act now,” he tweeted Saturday...Source:ctvnews.ca

Why Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is personal for Chrystia Freeland?

Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland has been at the forefront of the government’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and for her, this crisis hits a little differently. On Feb. 24, the day Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a full-scale military attack on the sovereign country, Canadians watching a government update about the situation got a hint of her personal heritage. “To my own Ukrainian-Canadian community, let me say this: Now is the time for us to be strong as we support our friends and family in Ukraine,” she said, later speaking in Ukrainian. Freeland’s maternal grand-

parents were both born in Ukraine and her mother helped draft the country’s constitution when it gained independence in 1991. Between 1988 and 1989, she studied at the University of Kyiv as an exchange student while earning a degree at Harvard University. There, she caught the attention of the Soviet Union’s KGB for her pro-democracy, pro-Ukrainian independence activism. In the 1990s, she launched her journalism career in Ukraine and later became Moscow’s bureau chief for the Financial Times. Along with other Canadian politicians and diplomats, Freeland is barred from entering Russia after the West applied sanctions for its annexation of Crimea. When CTVNews.ca reached out to the minister’s office requesting background material and a statement about how her personal connections impact her work on the file, staff referenced comments she made on Thursday that the focus of Canadians

should be centred on the Ukrainian people. “What we are seeing across Ukraine is a very, very determined people who have decided they’re willing to fight and die for democracy and for freedom. […] Seeing the Ukrainians stand up and say, ‘We may be smaller than you, you may have a fierce army that is bigger than ours, but we will not submit,’” she said during a press conference. “I think that is what has been transformative, and I’m very proud of them. I’m very inspired by the people of Ukraine, and I think the whole world is.ʺ Retired major-general David Fraser, a former NATO commander, says he commends the efforts she’s made to distance her personal background with the situation at hand. “I got to say, she’s been pretty low key about this throughout the conflict so far and I credit her for – she could have come out very emotional, but she hasn’t. She has been more what we should expect from our dep-

uty prime minister,” he said in an interview on CTVNews.ca. “She’s not taken the soapbox and used it for, quite frankly, cheap political moves.” Moving in lockstep with its allies, Canada has levied a series of economic sanctions at Russian institutions and elites – including Putin – for the war in Ukraine. The government has also announced shipments of lethal and non-lethal military aid to Ukraine, millions of dollars in humanitarian aid, and has closed domestic airspace and waterways to Russia.Almost daily, Freeland has stood alongside her colleagues, unveiling incremental punitive measures as the situation escalates.Former Conservative defence and foreign affairs minister Peter MacKay said in a statement to CTVNews.ca that it’s evident the minister is “moving mountains” within her own department and “arguably others” to expedite the government’s support...... The Importance of Making a Great First Impression

irst impressions are crucial. They can make or break an opportunity. It’s human nature to make a judgement about someone when you first meet them, but did you know that people can formulate an opinion about you in less than 20 seconds! We are hard-wired to make snap decisions about others in a quick, non-reflective way that is unconscious. We are all different, we are raised differently, have different values, education, come from different backgrounds and sometimes even hold our own prejudices. That’s why we make a snap judgement about someone when we first meet them based on their appearance, accent, tone of

pression is always your best one. People can change their opinion of you over time, of course they can, but if you don’t have long to sell yourself or business idea, then you don’t have a second to waste. And while sadly you can’t make everyone like you, there are some simple steps you can take to make sure that your first impression is your best impression. It’s almost impossible to make every person you ever meet like you, that’s just part of life. Sometimes we’re just too different from one another and we don’t get on - and that’s fine! But it will make all the difference when you consciously bring your best self to make a good first impression, which can create opportunities, make new connections and open lots of doors for you. ‍Not only can you make new friends and grow your network, but you could also be offered a great opportunity as a result - a business proposition, a job offer or chance to meet with them again. Going In to March-What To Expect?

Russia Invading Ukraine

On February 24th, President Putin declared Russia could not feel “safe, develop, and exist” because of what he claimed was a constant threat from modern Ukraine. And so began Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. For months, the Russian president denied any invasion but then launched a devastating attack on Ukraine, a European, democratic, country, sharing a border with Russia. Some experts believe Putin hopes to invade and take over multiple parts of Europe, in an effort to rebuild and expand the Soviet Union. This would reassert Putin’s power and influence across Europe as well as secure his

Covid-19 Update

Since the start of the pandemic, British Columbia has reported 349,944 cases of Covid-19 while deaths have amounted to 2,903. Now, about 93.3% of eligible Canadians have been vaccinated with one dose and approximately 90.8% fully vaccinated with both doses. Additionally, 56% of eligible Canadians have received their third dose as well.

As stated above, people will make a judgement on you based on your appearance, tone of voice and what you say to them. With this in mind there are some simple steps you can follow to ensure that your first impression is your best:Always dress for the occasion: Whether it’s an interview, blind date or business meeting, ensure you put your best foot forward, give it some thought and dress appropriately for the occasion. If you look good you’ll feel good too. Be polite -no matter what: There is no real reason to be rude to someone, even if they don’t treat you with the same respect. Be the best version of yourself and inspire. You can always speak your truth with compassion. Be Authentic: Whether that’s a formal handshake or a relaxed hug (depending on the person and situation of course), being authentic and making a friendly, positive entrance will leave a lasting impression. ‍A smile goes a mile: A smile will always go Although all vaccines administered continue to protect Canadians from the virus, new mutations are still infecting vaccinated and non-vaccinated citizens. Because of this, wearing masks, keeping distance from others, and actively using sanitizer is still important. Especially since in-person school is completely functional again, and people are going back to offices for work .

I went to the Aurat March for the very No, former PM I.I. Chundrigar was not first time and here’s what I saw ousted through a no-confidence vote

My perception of the Aurat March was formed entirely by social media and it couldn’t have been more further from the truth. Due to privacy concerns, the author wishes to remain anonymous I don’t have permission to go to Aurat March but I still went yesterday. I and many women across this country sneaked out of our homes, schools and workplaces on March 8, all in a bid to attend our very first Aurat March on Women’s Day. If you’ve lived in Pakistan long enough, you’ll know just how controversial Aurat Marches are. They’re the seedbeds of all that is behaya and fahash, many argue, a soapbox that promotes looking down upon family values. WhatsApp messages urge family elders to keep their daughters, wives and mothers

away from the Aurat March, and our elders solemnly listen and restrict permission. I could have sneaked out to attend the Aurat March in previous years as well but it wasn’t just the lack of permission that held me back. The vilification on social media left an impression on me. My perception of the Aurat March was formed entirely on what I saw on social media, and a lot of what you see on social media is not a kind and authentic take on what the march stands for. From my vantage point, which was my phone screen, it felt like the Aurat March was held for only a few, a privileged section of society, Men and women who are the beneficiaries of socioeconomic privileges that the majority don’t have. Privilege that shields them from many forms of oppression and discrimination. I did not see myself represented in the pictures that flooded social media. A part of me wanted to see whether this was the reality onground as well. I decided to attend this year’s march, making it a point to look beyond social media and read the manifesto to know what the Aurat March in Karachi was really about. Source: mages.dawn.com

Australia’s first Test in Pakistan for nearly a quarter of a century ended in a draw on Tuesday at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Opting to bat on run-filled surface, Pakistan had made 476-4 before declaring their first innings at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. By the time they bowled out Australia for 459 on the final day, the chances of any team winning the contest had evaporated. Pakistan decided to bat on allowing Imamul Haq, who went into the match without a century in his previous 11 Tests, to score his second hundred of the contest. The bespectacled left-hander’s unbeaten 111 included seven boundaries and two sixes. Imam went on to win the man-of-thematch award. His opening partner Abdullah Shafique, who made 136 not out, also brought up his maiden Test century as Pakistan posted 252 for no loss in their second innings before the teams shook hands and left. A total of 1,187 runs were scored over five days and only 14 wickets fell in what Australia’s Steve Smith called a “pretty benign, dead wicket”

which risks censure from the game’s governing body. With draw looming as the only possible result, Australia captain Pat Cummins shielded his frontline quicks and used as many as nine bowlers in Pakistan’s second innings. Earlier, after the tourists began the final day on 449-7, Pakistan took 11 deliveries to claim the last three Australian wickets. Nauman Ali dismissed Cummins for eight, and both Mitchell Starc and Lyon fell lbw as Australia finished 17 runs behind Pakistan’s first innings total. Each of Australia’s top four batsmen crossed the 50-mark but could not convert them into hundreds and the tourists lost their last six wickets for 52 runs. Left-arm spinner Nauman claimed a career-best 6-107 on a flat track where bowlers struggled for success. When Pakistan came out to bat for the second time in the match, Cummins saw no point in straining his pace attack on the unresponsive track. On Tuesday the pace trio of Cummins, Starc and Josh Hazlewood bowled a combined 16 out of their 77 overs. Source: dawn.com

Australia’s first Test in Pakistan in 24 years ends in draw

Shane Warne: Australian cricket legend died from natural causes - police Australian cricket legend Shane Warne’s death in Thailand on Friday was from natural causes, police have confirmed. A senior Thai police official said the post mortem exam showed no signs of foul play in the 52-year-old’s death. Warne, who is considered to be one of the greatest cricketers of all time, died of a suspected heart attack on Koh Samui island, where he was holidaying. The Australian government is bringing his body back to Australia where he will be given a state funeral. Warne was a larger-than-life figure whose fame transcended sport and he inspired generations of fans. He was found unresponsive at the Thai villa where he was staying with friends. Attempts to revive him in hospital were unsuccessful. The post mortem exam showed Warne died of a “congenital disease”, Songyot Chayaninporamet, deputy director of Samui Hospital, told a news conference, Reuters news agency reported. “There is no Covid-19 infection and no sign of assault or murder.” Warne - or Warnie, as he

was famously known - was the king of spin, a loveable larrikin whose stellar career was hit by controversy, and whose star power transcended the pitch where he weaved his magic. Source:bbc.com

With Prime Minister Imran Khan facing a no-trust move against him by the opposition, the question arises whether such a move has ever succeeded against a premier in Pakistan’s history. Former prime ministers Shaukat Aziz and Benazir Bhutto had managed to defeat similar attempts in the past while several sources on the internet and social media are suggesting that I.I. Chundrigar was removed as the prime minister of Pakistan through a no-trust motion in 1957. However, the fact is that no prime minister has been ousted from office as a result of a successful no-confidence motion and Mr Chundrigar resigned from office after developing serious differences with a key coalition partner over the issue of separate electorates. Dawn.com dived into its archives and dug out copies of Dawn newspaper from December 1957 to get a clear picture of how Mr Chundrigar left office in 1957. Ismail Ibrahim Chundrigar, leader of the Muslim League parliamentary party in the National Assembly, was asked by then-president Maj-Gen Iskander Mirza to form a new cabinet on October 18, 1957, following the resignation of Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy as prime minister. However, less than two months later, Mr Chundrigar submitted his resignation on the night between Dec 11 and Dec 12, which was accepted on Dec 16. In his resignation letter to the president, which was published in the Dec 12, 1957, edition of Dawn, Chundrigar wrote, “I was called for consultations by you to help in the formation of Government. In the beginning I declined to form a coalition with the Republican Party as there was basic difference between the Muslim League Party and the Republican Party on the issue of the system of electorate ... “As you are aware, this coalition was formed on the basis of agreement on three condi-

tions, one of which was that separate electorates will be substituted for joint electorate,” he wrote, noting that the election programme was also revised after the agreement and the cabinet approved a bill substituting separate electorates for joint electorates in the Electoral Act. However, “the resolution passed by the Republican Party in favour of joint electorate amounts to breach of the agreement and the solemn promise given by them at the time of formation of the Government. As they have resiled from their promise, and as the basic agreement on which the coalition was formed has been broken by the Republican Party, my party can no longer continue in coalition with the Republican Party. “I, therefore, tender my resignation from the office of the Prime Ministership, and that of my Cabinet.” Chundrigar’s resignation is also mentioned in volume one of M. Rafique Afzal’s book – Political Parties in Pakistan 1947-1958 – in which the author wrote, “... The Muslim League declined to accept their (Republican Party’s) support at such a price; and the coalition ministry resigned.” The development is also mentioned in Mushtaq Ahmad’s Government and Politics in Pakistan.Source: dawn.com
