Trudeau calls on European leaders to unite, aid Ukraine and further sanction Russia

RUSSELS -- Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is making a plea to European leaders to come together as democracies in the face of Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine and tackle rising uncertainties citizens have about the future. Speaking to European parliamentarians Wednesday, the prime minister said those economic uncertainties have percolated for years, but are now stoked by rising global inflation.Trudeau said economic

YIV, UKRAINE -- NATO estimated on Wednesday that 7,000 to 15,000 Russian soldiers have been killed in four weeks of war in Ukraine, where fierce fighting by the country’s fast-moving defenders has denied Moscow the lightning victory it sought. By way of comparison, Russia lost about 15,000 troops over 10 years in Afghanistan. A senior NATO military official said the alliance’s estimate was based on information from Ukrainian authorities, what Russia has released -- intentionally or not -- and intelligence gathered from open sources. The official spoke on condition of anonymity under ground rules set by NATO.

When Russia unleashed its invasion Feb. 24 in Europe’s biggest offensive since World War II, a swift toppling of Ukraine’s government seemed likely. But with Wednesday marking four full weeks of fighting, Moscow is bogged down in a grindTo be Continued at page 5

“Putin’s attack on Ukraine is an attack on the values that form the pillars of all democracies. We have a responsibility to make the case to people about why these values matter so much -- not just to Ukrainians but to us all,” Trudeau said in his remarks. “We must recommit ourselves to the work of strengthening our democracies, and demonstrate the principled leadership people are looking for.” The speech comes on the first day

P frustrations are threatening the stability of the world and driving a deep uncertainty about the future and distrust of government. He also said democracies face a new threat from Russian President Valdimir Putin and his attack on Ukraine, which Trudeau called a violation of international law with the targeting and killing of civilians in hospitals and residential buildings. Trudeau said the war in Ukraine poses a security threat not only to Europe, but to western democracies and the world.

of a whirlwind trip to Brussels and Trudeau’s second visit to the continent this month. It was Trudeau’s second time addressing European parliamentarians, following a 2017 speech that was meant as a shot in the arm for a continent reeling from Britain’s vote a year earlier to leave the European Union amid the election of Donald Trump in the United States. Trudeau referenced that five-year-old speech on Wednesday, noting at the time

rime Minister Imran Khan delivered a keynote address at the inaugural session of the 48th Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) of Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) at the Parliament House in Islamabad on Tuesday. While talking about the OIC’s role, he said, “We have failed both the Palestinians and the people of Kashmir. I am sad to say that we have been able to make no impact at all.” The premier said Western countries did “not take the OIC seriously” because “we are a divided house and those powers know it. “We (Muslims) are 1.5 billion people and yet our voice to stop this blatant injustice is insignificant.” PM Imran said international law was on the side of the people of

Palestine and Kashmir, adding that the United Nations Security Council’s resolutions backed the right of the Kashmiris to self-determination through a plebiscite. However, the international community never ensured that right was given, he said. Referring to India’s stripping of occupied Kashmir’s special status in August 2019, he said “nothing happened because they (India) feels no pressure.” “They feel we can just [pass] a resolution and then [go] back to our usual business.” He cautioned that unless the OIC was united on core issues, human rights abuses would keep happening such as the “daylight robbery in Palestine”. “The only hope I have is that for the first time because of Continue at page 5

Ramadan comprises the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and its most notable ritual is the dawn to dusk fasting practiced for each day of the month, which is done to memorialize the first revelation of the Quran from Allah to the Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him). Observing Ramadan is regarded as one of the five pillars of Islam for believers. Because the dates of Ramadan are set according to the new crescent moon and are based on a lunar calendar, it moves around in relation to the Gregorian calendar, which is fixed based on the solar year that is 11 to 12 days longer than the lunar year. Over the past two years, Islamic Relief Canada in British Columbia has cultivated the community across five major regions across the province through domestic response efforts, community engagement, and fundraising. Ultimately, the aim of this town hall with 125 participants from 45 organizations was to review the work of Islamic Relief

A messy endgame

HE shelf life of a civilian government in Pakistan is generally three and half years. It is rare for any prime minister to have crossed that mark. Most prime ministers have been removed either through extra-constitutional or extra-parliamentary means; two have been ousted by judicial action. But there has not been any instance of a prime minister having been removed through a vote of no-confidence. Could the pattern change as Prime Minister Imran Khan braces himself for the opposition’s noconfidence move? The odds are certainly stacked against him with large-scale defections from the ruling party’s ranks and the allies weighing their options. However, the endgame of the ongoing power struggle is still not clear. The battle has already gone beyond parliament. The venue has now been shifted, with the Supreme Court having been involved as arbiter in the dispute over the defection rule. Meanwhile, the recent attack on Sindh House in Islamabad and the increasingly aggressive tenor of the prime minister and his cabinet ministers have heightened tensions.

The most important aspect of this power game is which side gets the establishment’s support.

Although the speaker has finally called the National Assembly session on March 25, it is not clear if the voting will take place within the time frame stipulated by the Constitution. Whatever the ruling of the apex court may be, it is not going to end the crisis. With the government on the warpath, there seems little hope of the no-confidence vote going smoothly. The

stand-off is getting messier, raising the danger of extra-parliamentary action being invoked. The unfolding power struggle has brought to the surface the fault lines that have plagued our democratic political process. While parliament has increasingly become dysfunctional, the country has moved towards authoritarianism. The politics of populism has weakened democratic institutions. With its complete reliance on the security establishment’s support, the PTI government has never believed in parliament. Its contempt for elected institutions is evident. The delay in summoning the Asse mbly session is evidence of that mindset. The decision of the security establishment to stay out of the fray has worsened the government’s vulnerability. The prime minister’s call for a show of strength during the Assembly session is a desperate move to bring elected members under pressure. It reminds one of Donald Trump inciting his supporters to march on the Capitol to prevent the transition after his election defeat. The prime minister and his supporters are visibly angry at what is described as the ‘neutrality’ of the security establishment. His remarks at a recent public rally that no one should remain neutral in what he describes as a conflict between ‘good and evil’, and that only animals are neutral, indicate his growing frustration at having to fight his own battles now. The rhetoric also exposes the prime minister’s arrogance and sense of self-righteousness. The military is constitutionally bound to stay out of politics. But unfortunately, that has not been the case. The security establishment has remained a dominant political force in the country, thus

weakening the democratic political process. It is also a fact that the military has been the pivot that has provided the government some semblance of stability. The establishment may have pulled back from supporting the Imran Khan government but that doesn’t mean it is completely out of the political game. In fact, it has been a political decision on its part to pull the plug. The move has led to the collapse of the coalition and encouraged the defection of party MNAs. The so-called neutrality was a signal to the joint opposition to move the no-confidence motion. It proved those right who envisaged the fall of the PTI government once the pivot was gone. It is not surprising that the opposition’s anti-establishment rhetoric has now completely disappeared as PTI supporters cry betrayal. This has been the story of Pakistani politics, with each political crisis strengthening the military’s role as the final arbiter in the country’s politics. The game is not over yet with the widening of the fault lines in the system. The overnight changing of loyalties and horse-trading have long been part of the power struggle that makes democracy a farce in this country. What is happening now is the latest episode in Pakistan’s political soap opera, with familiar characters though with some of them remaining invisible. The most important aspect of this power game is which side gets the establishment’s support. There is no indication that this culture will change with the shift of the power matrix. It is obvious that Imran Khan will not accept the outcome of the noconfidence motion against him. The presidential reference in the

Supreme Court on a constitutional matter that should have been resolved in parliament shows the increasing irrelevance of the elected

institution.

It may not be for the first time that a constitutional matter has landed in the apex judiciary, but there is now an increasing tendency to fight political battles outside parliament. The Supreme Court’s directive to not hold public rallies outside parliament during the coming session may not stop the planned show of political muscle by the rival groups at other venues in the capital, and will not help ease the stand-off between the government and opposition. The raid on Sindh House in Islamabad and protests outside the homes of the defectors by PTI supporters is alarming. The prime

minister’s statement defending the reaction of his partymen will encourage violence. It has made the situation volatile. It is in the interest of his party to fight the battle inside parliament rather than taking it to the streets. It is unprecedented for a ruling party to resort to agitation, fuelling instability in the country. It is time for the prime minister and his party to examine where they have gone wrong. Hiding behind conspiracy theories won’t help them salvage the situation. It remains extremely unlikely that the prime minister can hold on to power as the endgame approaches. everyone in the room could see something lurking on the horizon that threatened the international order. He looked no further in his speech than the protesters who clogged the streets around Parliament Hill last month, saying that organizers

of the so-called Freedom Convoy used people’s anxieties to turn citizens against a democratic system that Trudeau said was best-suited to allay their concerns. He argued that governments can and should play a positive role in people’s lives. Two weeks ago, Trudeau developed a similar theme in a speech

The day after the deal: MPs voice their PM Imran says has a ‘massive surprise’ up views on the Liberal-NDP agreement his sleeve for opposition, will never resign

The day after the Liberals and NDP announced they’ve entered into a three-year deal to keep Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government in power in exchange for policy action on a suite of progressive issues, the major dynamic shift in the domestic political landscape is still the preoccupying focus for many on Parliament Hill. The NDP are already starting to articulate how they’d like elements of the agreement to be enacted, the Liberals are touting the move as important for “stability” in a time without much of it globally, and the Conservatives continue to rail against the move as undemocratic, while expressing optimism over the window of opportunity it may provide their party. All party caucuses had meetings on Wednesday morning—a regular weekly occurrence on the Hill—and as MPs made their way in and out of these meetings, reporters dug into some of the current questions surrounding the deal. From what it’ll mean for each party’s long-term positioning to how realistic is it that the agreement will bring considerable change in the short-term, here’s what federal elected officials had to say. THE LIBERALS For the Liberals, the deal injects years of pre-

dictability—not having to find alliances on every confidence vote—but could also come with political risk that they alienate their more centrist supporters by progressing a left-leaning agenda. Will the agreement pay off by allowing Trudeau to hit a decade in power and secure some legacy items? Or will it backfire and open up ground for their opponents? And what does it mean for future leadership hopefuls? Amid these big questions, multiple cabinet ministers and MPs referenced how they feel the deal is important for federal stability and responds to precisely what voters asked for in the 2021 election: cross-party co-operation. “I am all for stability and certainty. One thing I’ve learned in this racket is that we’re all human beings. We only have so much time in a day. The more time you spend on what my grandmother used to call ‘old foolishness,’ you know, the less time you’re actually governing and moving policy forward. So I’m delighted for stability,” said Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan. “We as a country need stability while we’re facing many crises, definitely a war in Europe as well as the pandemic, so this is the time to make sure that we continue to deliver for Canadians while dealing with unprecedented challenges,” Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly said. Asked whether she thinks it will be difficult to sell the deal to more fiscally conservative Liberal voters, Joly didn’t directly answer, but went on to say that based on the Conservative Party’s current positioning, “clearly, you know, they’re not about occupying the centre right now.”...... Russia has failed to achieve its goals in Ukraine, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan has said, warning that despite the apparent Russian setbacks, the war will not end “easily or rapidly”.Speaking from the White House on Tuesday, Sullivan said Russia had set three objectives for itself when it started its “unprovoked” invasion: subjugating Ukraine, enhancing Moscow’s power and prestige, and dividing the West. “Russia

has thus far manifestly failed to accomplish all three objectives. In fact, it has thus far achieved the opposite,” said Sullivan, adding that “brave” Ukrainians have refused to submit to Russian forces. “Although Russia may take more territory in these brutal military operations, it will never take the country away from the Ukrainian people.” Still, Sullivan predicted that the violence will get worse in the near future. “There will be hard days ahead in Ukraine – hardest for the Ukrainian troops on the front lines and the civilians under Russian bombardment,” he said. Despite US assertions that Russia’s invasion is stalling, President Vladimir Putin recently stressed that the war was unfolding “successfully, in strict accordance with pre-approved plans”.

Cause of China jet crash still unknown as hunt for black boxes continues Crash investigators on Tuesday said they do not yet know why a China Eastern jet carrying 132 people plunged from the sky, with recovery teams still scouring a forested mountainside for flight recorders from the pulverised Boeing aircraft. No survivors had been found nearly 36 hours after Monday’s crash — the deadliest air disaster in three decades in China, a country that had maintained an enviable air safety record. “With the current information, we are unable to make a clear judgement on the cause of the accident,” Zhu Tao, director of the aviation safety office at China’s aviation authority, told reporters late on Tuesday. He said the focus is now on “the search for flight recorders”. Questions have mounted over the cause of the crash, which saw the stricken jet drop 20,000 feet in just over a minute before plunging into rugged terrain

in southern China on Monday afternoon. The velocity of the impact left twisted metal and passengers’ belongings scattered across a swathe of forest. The airline has officially acknowledged that some aboard the jet, which was travelling from the city of Kunming to the southern hub of Guangzhou, had perished — but has stopped short of declaring all on board dead. Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday claimed to have a “surprise” up his sleeve for the opposition and expressed confidence that he would emerge victorious in the “noconfidence match” against his opponents. The premier made these remarks while speaking to a group of journalists in Islamabad, just two days before the National Assembly (NA) session summoned to begin deliberations on the joint opposition’s resolution seeking his ouster begins. Despite him being in a highly precarious position following the emergence of a number of dissidents in his party and his allies increasingly hinting on teaming up with the opposition, the prime minister warned the opposition that it “will be shocked by the loss of voters on their side”. “The opposition has already shown all their cards,” he said, adding: “They are in for a big surprise.” PM Imran asserted that he would not tender his resignation and in reply to a subsequent question, he said: “Should I give up under the pressure of thieves even before the fight is over?” “It may be someone’s misconception that I will sit at home,” he remarked, making it clear that he did not plan on stepping down as the country’s chief

executive. During the meeting, the prime minister also revealed that he had met estranged PMLN leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, saying that both had an association that went back 40 years. The prime minister’s statement has come days before the initiation of proceedings on the joint opposition’s no-confidence motion filed against him in the NA earlier this month. The move by the opposition — primarily the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) and PPP — followed days of political maneuvering on the part of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI’s) and its opponents after PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman formally announced last month the plan to submit a no-trust motion against the premier. Both sides stepped up efforts to gain the support of the PTI’s allies, whose votes are of significance in deciding the prime minister’s fate. Meanwhile, they also traded bards and there were allegations of horsetrading against the opposition and episodes of violence which opposition parties claimed were perpetrated on PTI leaders’ behest in a bid to keep dissident members from voting on the no-confidence resolution. To show their strength, both sides also announced that they would hold power shows in the capital, with the PTI set to stage a public meeting in Parade Ground on March 27. During his interaction with media persons today, PM Imran said his party’s rally would be a “historic gathering”. ‘Army should not be maligned for politics’ The premier said the country’s armed forces were its “most precious asset” and Cont. at Pg 10

Egypt, UAE, Israel leaders meet for first ever three-way summit

Leaders of Egypt, Israel, and the United Arab Emirates have met for a three-way summit, the first of its kind since the UAE normalised relations with Israel, with the aftermath of the invasion of Ukraine, as well as the Iran nuclear deal, on the agenda. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi hosted the talks on Tuesday at the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and the UAE’s de facto ruler, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Israel and Turkey hail new era in relations, but divisions remain end of list Bennett and Mohammed had also held bilateral talks with el-Sisi on Monday. Egypt’s presidency said the three leaders discussed energy, market stability, and food security. A statement from Bennett’s office said, “The leaders discussed the ties between the three countries in the context of recent developments in the world and the region, and the ways to strengthen them on all levels.” Israeli media said the leaders also addressed reports that Iran and Western powers, including the United States, are close

to a deal to revive the 2015 nuclear accord, which Israel vehemently opposes. Egypt, in particular, is facing challenges in the areas of energy and food security after the war in Ukraine sent commodity prices soaring, prompting Cairo on Monday to devalue its currency by 14 percent. The war has also left Egypt facing higher costs for its substantial wheat import needs, as well as a loss in tourism revenue from Russian and Ukrainian visitors to Red Sea resorts. Russia and Ukraine are the main suppliers of wheat to Egypt, which is often the world’s largest importer. Source: aljazeera.com

Statement on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination Ministry of Attorney General 21 March. 2022. VICTORIA - Premier John Horgan and Rachna Singh, Parliamentary Secretary for Anti-Racism Initiatives, have issued the following statement marking the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination: “On the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, we call on everyone in B.C. to stand together against racism and work toward a more equitable and inclusive province. “The last two years have been incredibly challenging. While the pandemic has brought out the best in most people, we have also seen it bring out the worst in some. Unfortunately, we have seen a staggering increase in hatred and racist actions targeting and scapegoating Indigenous Peoples and racialized communities since COVID-19 began.“At the same time, we are seeing a rise in white supremacy and brazen displays of hateful speech, symbols and acts that many hoped we had left behind us. Now more than ever, we must come together as a society to stand against this rising hate and say, ‘No more’. “In the coming months we will be introducing new anti-racism data legislation to help to eliminate systemic racism by supporting secure race-based data collection. This data will be critical in helping us identify and address the gaps and inequalities that exist in how government delivers programs and services. “This will help pave the way to a more equitable, inclusive province, delivering better outcomes for those who rely on these programs and services, such as health care, education and policing.“It is essential that those

who are most affected by systemic racism are at the centre of this work. That’s why we have developed the legislation in consultation with Indigenous Peoples and engaged extensively with racialized communities throughout the province. These communities will be included at every step to make sure that data is collected, stored and used in a way that better supports their needs.“This significant new legislation builds upon the other steps we have taken over the past few years to address racism. These include reestablishing the BC Human Rights Commission, launching Resilience BC, our provincial anti-racism network, and reviewing and revising B.C.’s K-12 curriculum to reflect other histories and ways of learning. As part of this, the Ministry of Education recently announced that secondary students will soon need to complete Indigenous-focused coursework before they graduate. “As a government, we will continue our work to create a province where everyone is treated with kindness, dignity and respect, regardless of their race or the colour of their skin. But we know that we can’t do it alone. “We are stronger when we work together. On this day, we encourage everyone in this province to join us in the ongoing fight for equality and justice in B.C.”

Seniors Care for an Aging Muslim Community in Canada

T

By Furquan Gehlen, Surrey

he majority of Muslims that reside in Canada today are immigrants (or the children/grandchildren of immigrants) who arrived in Canada beginning in the early 70’s. Assuming that the average age of a Muslim immigrant to Canada in 1970 – 1975 would have been between 20 and 30 years of age, such an individual, if still alive today would be in their late 60’s to mid 70’s. For the first time in our short existence in Canada, the Muslim community is grappling with the care of aging loved ones on a large scale, and one that will continue to grow. It may be difficult for one to imagine the magnitude of the challenge at hand, so allow me to share some numbers with you. While one would be hard pressed to find Muslim specific statistics when it comes to the population of seniors, The Canadian Institute for Health Information estimates that by the year 2037 the population of Canadians aged 65+ will increase by 68%, while the population of Canadians over 75 will more than double. Expressed in numbers, it is estimated that in the year 2037, Canada will have a population of 10.4 million seniors over the age of 75, up from just 3.5 million in 1997. To add to the perspective, Statistics Canada estimates the total Canadian population will approach 40 million by 2037 (based on a mid range growth scenario). This would mean that over 25% of the Canadian population in 2037 will be over 75 years of age. Currently, the Canadian Muslim community accounts for just under 4% of Canada’s population. This number is likely to continue increasing in the future as it has in the past. However, even if we were

to suppose it remains the same, we are looking at over 400,000 Muslim seniors over the age of 75. Granted not all seniors require ongoing care, one can reasonably assume a sizeable proportion do and will. Caring for our elders has always been a point of pride in the Muslim community. I was requested to write a short piece on the Islamic perspective on caring for the elderly. Alhmadulillah, caring for our elders is something we can all agree upon. As a reminder, I will share a few verses and ahādīth below. “It is Allāh Who created you in a state of weakness (as a helpless infant), then substituted strength after the weakness (as you grew into an adult) and, after the strength, will again give weakness (as you age) and (eventually) old-age. Allāh creates whatever He wills, and He is the All Knowing, All-Powerful.” [30:54] “Allah has created you, and then causes you to die. And some of you are left to reach the most feeble stage of life so that they may know nothing after having known much. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing, Most Capable.” [16:70] The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬is narrated to have said, “seek my love and proximity with the feeble and weak amongst you. Indeed they cause sustenance and aid to be brought to you.” [Al Tirmidhi] An elderly man came to the majlis of the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬. When those present did not make sufficient room for him, the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ said, “the one who does not show kindness to our young and veneration to our elderly, is not amongst us.” [Al Tirmidhi] Keeping all of the above in mind, a unique challenge the Muslim community is now

beginning to face is how to care for our seniors who are no longer able to care for themselves. The first answer to this question that comes to mind (and a correct answer mind you) is that we should care for our parents/grandparents in our homes. While this is definitely the ideal solution, it is not always a practical one for a number of reasons; many elders may not have children or relatives to care for them; many may suffer from health issues that require constant care; still others may choose to live on their own for as long as possible, even if it be in an assisted living setting. So, while the simple answer is that every family must care for their elders inside their homes, this fails to take into account the many complexities present within our community. The second-best option for elders that require care is an assisted living or long term care facility that caters to our beliefs, dietary requirements, and religious sensibilities. To say that finding such a facility is difficult would be a tremendous understatement. No such facility currently exists anywhere in Canada. As a result, Muslim seniors requiring care are forced to choose from facilities not equipped, or very ill equipped, to provide the quality care our elders deserve. Even if a facility is somewhat informed of the needs of elderly Muslims in its care, seldom do such facilities provide Muslim seniors with the opportunity to be around, and benefit from the company of, other Muslim seniors. In the next 15 to 20 years, the Muslim community is likely to increasingly feel the need for Muslim focused care facilities in each of Canada’s urban centres. With this in mind, a group of community members have

Although the organization is still in its early days, they have managed to acquire a 60 bed, government subsidized assisted living facility in Surrey, BC. Admission to the home is regulated by the Health Authority, as residents will need to have their health care needs assessed before being accepted into the program (not unlike other government subsidized care settings). Mosaic has a vision to acquire additional facilities in the future and develop other health care services for seniors. Taraweeh: The Special Evening Prayers of Ramadan By Huda

W

hen the month of Ramadan begins, Muslims enter into a period of discipline and worship, fasting during the day, and praying throughout the day and night. During Ramadan, special evening prayers are conducted during which long portions of the Quran are recited. These special prayers are known as taraweeh.

Origins

The word taraweeh comes from an Arabic word which means to rest and relax. The Hadith indicates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) led his followers in evening prayer on the 25th, 27th, and 29th nights of Ramadan, in the time after the isha prayer. Since then, this has been a tradition during the evenings of Ramadan. However, it is not regarded as compulsory (unlike the five daily prayers), since the Hadith also documents

Cont. from Pg 3 Ramadan Is by Nature a Time of Sacrifice The personal sacrifice that is at the core of Ramadan plays out in many ways for Muslims: Through fasting, a Muslim experiences hunger and thirst, and sympathizes with those in the world who have little to eat every day. Through increased devotion, Muslims feel closer to their Creator and recognize that everything we have in this life is a blessing from Him.

that the Prophet discontinued this prayer because he specifically did not want it to become compulsory. Still, it is a strong tradition among modern Muslims during Ramadan to this day. It is practiced by most Sunni Muslims, for whom it amplifies the sense of individual spirituality and unity (Shia Muslims do not pray taraweeh).

Taraweeh Prayers in Practice

The prayer can be very long (well over an hour), during which one stands upright to read from the Quran and performs many cycles of movement (standing, bowing, prostrating, sitting). After each of the four cycles, one sits for a brief period of rest before continuing—this is where the name taraweeh (“rest prayer”) comes from. During the standing portions of the prayer, long sections of the Quran are read. The Quran is divided into equal parts (called

juz) for the purpose of reading sections of equal length during each of the Ramadan nights. Thus, 1/30 of the Quan is read on successive evenings, so that by the end of the month the entire Quran has been completed. It is recommended that Muslims attend the taraweeh prayers in the mosque (after ‘isha, the last evening prayer), to pray in congregation. This is true for both men and women. However, one may also perform the prayers individually at home. These prayers are voluntary but are strongly recommended and widely practiced. Performing the prayer together at the mosque is said to greatly increase the feeling of unity among followers. There has been some dispute about how long the taraweeh prayer is supposed to be: 8 or 20 raka’at (cycles of prayer). It is without dispute, however, that when praying the taraweeh prayer in congregation, one should

start and end in accordance with the imam’s preference, performing the same number that he performs. Night prayers in Ramadan are a blessing, and one should not argue about this fine point. Saudi Arabia television broadcasts the taraweeh prayers live from Mecca, Saudi Arabia, now with simultaneous subtitling of the English translation. Source:Learnreligions.com

The Benefit of the Ramadan Fast for Muslims

Through increased charity, Muslims develop feelings of generosity and goodwill toward others. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) once said, “A man’s wealth is never diminished by charity.” Through self-control, a Muslim practices good manners, good speech, and good hab habits.Through changing their routines, Muslims have a chance to establish more healthy lifestyle habits—particularly with regards to diet and smoking.

Through family and community gatherings, Muslims strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood, in their own communities, and throughout the world. The Impact of Ramadan for Muslims Ramadan is a very special time for Muslims, but the feelings and lessons experienced carry on throughout the year. In the Quran, Muslims are commanded to fast so that they may “learn self-restraint” (Quran 2:183). This restraint and devotion is especially felt

during Ramadan, but Muslims are expected to strive to make those feelings and attitudes stay carry over during their “normal” lives. That is the true goal and test of Ramadan. May Allah accept our fasting, forgive our sins, and guide us all to the Straight Path. May Allah bless us all during Ramadan, and throughout the year, with His forgiveness, mercy, and peace, and bring us all closer to Him and to each other. Source:Learnreligions.com
