sraeli incursions increasingly challenge the longstanding agreement banning non-Muslim prayer at Al-Aqsa Mosque Compound. Tens of thousands of ultranationalist Israelis have marched through occupied East Jerusalem, in what is being seen as the latest provocation against Palestinians. Every year, far-right Jewish groups mark the illegal occupation of East Jerusalem by holding a “flag day” march. Some took part in an incursion in the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound and raised the Israeli flag. Some Jewish worshippers also prayed, violating a longstanding agreement preventing
non-Muslims from holding religious rituals there. The Palestinian prime minister denounced what he called “aggression”. Such incursions have become increasingly common. So why is the issue so contentious? Source: aljazeera.com

Backbiting According To Hadith:
I
By: Ahmed Abdulla
t is no secret that people love gossip. What is quite shocking is how often we engage in gossip or backbiting and are not even aware of the dangers that lie in it. In Islam the ruling regarding the topic of backbiting is clear. It is considered a grave sin.
Back biting in Islam haram
What Is Considered Backbiting In Islam? To attack the character or reputation of a person who is not present (backbiting). Speaking false information or lies about a person who is not present (slandering). As Muslims it is our responsibility to guard our tongues and to avoid things which are forbidden. The instructions from the Qur’an and hadith are clear regarding the stance on backbiting and slandering. We will explore those in a minute. But first we’ll explore real consequences of just how bad things can get. We live in a digital age where information spreads rapidly. With the right message to the right people, things can go viral and false information becomes the “truth” for many. This is the unfortunate happenings which occurred in an Indian village where WhatsAppp messages led to actual mob lynches. To prevent spreading and subsequent lynchings of strangers Facebook began limiting the number of times a message could be forwarded (read about that story here). We must be more cautious in not only spreading false information but consuming it. Just because it is in written form doesn’t make it any more true. We must become students, not followers. Read and assess, don’t just read and follow. This goes for the information on this site your reading right now. I will preface this by saying, we do have a high standard to be accurate, but if any of our conclusions are wrong we encourage readers to comment or email us. QURAN VERSES ABOUT BACKBITING: Here are three verses in the Qur’an which gives us a clear understanding of this evil. quran verse about backbiting and slandering “Woe to every persistent slanderer, persistent defamer” (Al Humazah Ayah 1) Quran verse about slandering “Those who love (to see) scandal published broadcast among the Believers, will have a grievous Penalty in this life and in the Hereafter: Allah knows, and ye know not.”(Nur Ayah 19) “O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or back-
In the hadith of Abu Dawud 4874, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was asked a question about Ghibah (backbiting). Someone came to him and said what if what I say about my brother is in fact truth? Prophet Muhammad (SAW) replied, if are right, you have slandered him, and if what you say of him is not true, you have reviled him. Abu Dharr reported Allah’s Messenger (SAW) as saying that Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, said: My servants, I have made oppression unlawful for Me and unlawful for you, so do not commit oppression against one another. In another hadith, upon passing a grave the Prophet (SAW) said the person of this grave is being punished for committing a major sin. He went on to say, that the person was being punished for making false and defamatory statements and made friends into enemies.
What is Bankruptcy?
We may think it is having no cash, or owing more money to debtors or creditors than that which we have in our own accounts. No, this is not real bankruptcy. In the hadith Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says the one who is bankrupt is the one whom on the day of resurrection has exhausted all his good deeds. Not because he did not pray or donate to charity but because he “reviled others, brought calumny (false testimony) against others, unlawfully devoured the wealth of others, shed the blood of others and beat others”.
Tip To Avoid Backbiting:

Ablution and the wiping of socks:
Question
read in an Islamic monthly magazine that when a Muslim does his ablution, i.e. ‘wudhu’, he may pass his wet hand over his footwear, only if it is made of leather. Wiping of socks made of cloth is not permissible. The writer supports his opinion by saying that according to Arabic literature, the word “jawrab”, which denotes socks, applies only to leather-made socks. Is this true?
Answer:
What I find strange is the definition the writer uses for the word “jawrab”. It is certainly not true that it denotes only leather-made socks. According to one of the best Arabic dictionaries, it means “feet wrapper”. There is no hint that it must be made of any particular materials. Where the writer has probably got confused is the fact that the question of wiping feet covers is entered into books of fiqh, or Islamic rulings, under the use of the “khuff”. This is traditionally made of leather, but is different from socks. It is similar to shoes, although it is without heels. That scholars agree that this concession meant to make it easier for people to have ablution, applies to all the types of footwear which cover the area which we normally wash when we have the ablution. That includes the whole feet up to the ankles. In operating this concession we rely on the Hadith which tells us that one of the Prophet’s companions was helping him to do his ablution by pouring water for him. When that man got ready to pour water over the Prophet’s feet, the Prophet motioned him that he did not need to have his feet washed, but wiping his socks was sufficient. He said: “I have put them in when they were pure.” That meant that he wore his socks after having had ablution. It is perhaps useful to mention the rule here that if you do your ablution in the morning, or indeed at any time during the day, then put on your socks or boots, you make the intention (not by words but by being conscious of what you intend to do) to avail yourself of this concession. If your ablution, or wudhu, gets invalidated afterward, you do not need to wash your feet anew when you have a new ablution. It is sufficient to
wet your hand and pass your fingers over the top of your feet. To pass one wet finger over a small area of each foot is adequate. Many people find this concession very convenient if they spend a long time at their place of work, where ablution facilities may not be available. This applies particularly in countries where Muslims are a minority or an immigrant community. Note: you may pray with your shoes on unless they come in contact with something impure (i.e. najasa- for e.g. blood, urine, and etc. Note: dust/mud is not considered najasa) where you would have to clean them to be able to pray with them. you are allowed to do so only in case the shoes cover your anklebones, otherwise, if the shoes don’t cover the anklebones, then you have to take your shoes off. Please note the following rulingalso about the permission of wiping over socks in certain conditions: Wiping over socks is permitted according to some Islamic Scholars. However, wiping over socks has certain conditions: 1-they have to be thick (the skin can’t be seen through them, unlike nylons from women), 2-they should hold on the feet (you don’t tie them with a lace or a string), and 3-you should be able to walk wearing them without being hurt. A person has to wear them over his/her feet while in a state of ablution, and they have to cover the ankles (the two bones sticking out on the bottom of the leg). This means, you can not simply wear socks and then wipe over them. You should instead take a regular ablution (including washing the feet), then wear the sock. If later on in the day you lose the state of ablution, then, you may do a regular ablution but simply wipe over instead of wash the feet. Note: only the top of the sock (foot) should be wiped not the bottom where you walk on. This rule applies regardless if you are traveling or if you stay in the same town. As to the period of time, if you are traveling, you can keep them up to three days while if you
I am confident you will think twice about backbiting after reading this. Backbiting in the moment may provide you temporary relief, but know the only person you harm is yourself. In the hadith, it says the punishment for backbiting is that Allah will take away from your account of good deeds and give it to the one you hurt as an act of compensation. Just think about that… the person you de est is gaining from your inability to control your emotions. You are not only giving them your time, focus and attention you are also losing your good deeds AND added to theirs. What do you really have to gain from this? You may consider the only person you want to backbite on this earth is your own fathers or mothers. ? On the flip side… Continue at page 7 If you are a victim of backbiting take comfort in knowing that they are only helping you on the day of judgement. B.C. minimum wage increases June 1 for lowest paid workers Ministry of Labour VICTORIA - As of June 1, 2022, B.C.’s lowest paid workers will get a pay boost as the minimum wage increases from $15.20 to $15.65 per hour, which is the highest of any province. This increase is part of a commitment made by government in 2018 to support workers and their families. Five years of measured, predictable increases have benefited as many as 400,000 British Columbians, the majority of whom are women, immigrants or youth.“Having a fair minimum wage is a key step in helping to lift more people out of poverty, make life
more affordable and build a strong economy for B.C.,” said Harry Bains, Minister of Labour. “We will continue to advocate for fair wages for all workers, especially those low-income workers who have been so essential to our health and well-being during the pandemic.”The minimum wage increase to $15.65 per hour is tied to British Columbia’s average annual inflation rate which, from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2021, was calculated at 2.8%. This is consistent with the approach taken in other jurisdictions. As of June 1, a 2.8% increase will also apply to the live-in camp leader and
live-in home-support worker minimum daily wages and the resident caretaker minimum monthly wage.“Each increase to the minimum wage has taken a little pressure off me and helped me breathe a little easier,” said Rekha Chander, longtime janitor at the Brian Canfield Centre in Burnaby. “With inflation the way it is, we’ve all been making changes to how we spend, but there are some expenses we can’t change. Getting this increase really makes a difference to me and my family, so we don’t feel like we’re falling behind.” Media Contact – Veeno Dewan

After the Long March
T was an abrupt end to the much-hyped ‘freedom march’. Imran Khan’s threat to storm the capital with over a million people ended with a whimper. A few thousand supporters who had gathered at D-Chowk at his call on the night of May 25 after removing roadblocks, could not withstand the massive tear gas shelling for long. Kaptaan turned back, leaving his supporters disappointed. He would later justify his decision to call off the ‘dharna’, saying that he feared that clashes with the law-enforcement agencies could lead to ‘bloodshed’, as according to him, his supporters were also armed. That sounds plausible given the prevailing tension. Yet that may not have been the only reason for Imran Khan’s turnabout. He might have seen the violence coming when he gave the call. In fact, to his utter disappointment, only a trickle of people, instead of the millions he hoped for, turned up to storm the capital and bring down the socalled imported government. The promised ‘revolution’ failed. The use of brute force and the blocking of roads by the government may have deterred many marchers from joining. The massive public response to his populist nationalist rhetoric must have swayed the former prime minister to think that the support could be turned into an agitational force to bring down the government. It was a sheer miscalculation on his part, and one that led to a political setback for him. He seems to have learnt nothing from his 2014 political misadventure. Political confrontation remains a major hurdle in the way of moving forward.
Imran Khan has now ensconced himself in Peshawar, his bastion of power, trying to rethink his strategy. His six-day deadline for the government to dissolve the Assembly and announce the election date ends today. He has threatened to return to Islamabad with ‘millions of marchers’ if his demands are not accepted. Meanwhile, the chief minister of KP has threatened to deploy the “Khyber Pakhtunkhwa force” to defy any restrictions on the march. Such a situation could lead to the violence that the former prime minister claims to have tried to avoid by calling off the protest last week. Certainly, the government’s ruthless use of force against the PTI supporters and crackdown on the party leadership cannot be condoned. But neither can the threat of violence by PTI party leaders be justified on any pretext. Curiously, Imran Khan has also been looking to the Supreme Court to ensure what he describes as his democratic right to hold a peaceful rally. There may not be any harm in referring to the Supreme Court for the protection of one’s democratic and human rights. But there is a growing tendency among political parties to drag the apex court into political issues that should be resolved in parliament and other elected forums. It is thus not surprising that the judiciary quite often encroaches upon those areas that fall in the domain of the executive and legislature. That unnecessarily makes the Supreme Court controversial. From his rhetoric, it appears that Imran Khan seeks to bring the apex court and other state institutions under pressure. He has cast doubts on the judges who
ruled against his unconstitutional action of dissolving the National Assembly in April. He certainly doesn’t believe in resolving political issues in parliament or holding discussions with other political parties. Imran Khan’s decision that PTI lawmakers should quit the National Assembly seems to have pushed the party into a blind alley, given the fact that it cannot force its way through agitational politics. The events of May 25 are a lesson to learn. The party could have played a more effective role in parliament. Some media reports on the divisions within the PTI leadership over the MNAs’ resignation issue do not come as a surprise. Sitting out of parliament until next year when elections are due will certainly not help the party in the polls. Interestingly, the party leadership has decided to maintain an ambiguous position on the resignations; it has decided not to appear individually before the Speaker and the Election Commission as required under the Constitution. It is indeed a deliberate move by the PTI leadership to keep the Lower House ineffective. It was exactly what the PTI did in 2014 during its four-month-long dharna outside parliament. Such an irrational stance will undermine the democratic political process. Chaos and the use of violence will only encourage extra-constitutional action as we have witnessed many times in the past. Meanwhile, what happened on May 25 must not be seen as a triumph for the PML-N-led coalition government that is virtually hanging by a thread. After weeks of uncertainty, the Sharif government has finally decided to complete the full term of the National
Assembly. It has also begun taking some long overdue actions to stabilise the economy. Last week, the government finally slashed the subsidy on petroleum products, clearing the way for the revival of the stalled IMF programme. But these measures are not enough to resolve a serious economic crisis. The existing polarisation and the worsening state of political confrontation remain a major hurdle in the way of moving forward. It is mainly the government’s responsibility to lower political temperatures. But unfortunately, the aggressive tenor of some of its ministers is contributing to the tension. Many opposition leaders have been booked on various charges, adding to mutual hostility. One of the reasons for the ruling coalition to complete the term was to carry out electoral reforms. But any unilateral reform will not help make the coming elections credible. Similarly, the hasty changes in NAB laws also expose the government to criticism that the amendments are meant to end corruption cases against some top leaders in the ruling alliance. It is apparent that the government, with its short term in office and surrounded by political instability, cannot be expected to deliver on any front. Early elections that could produce a stable government are the only solution to the present political and economic crises. But for that, it is imperative to make the elections credible. The commissioner’s report, which was published Wednesday morning, states that Tim Hortons collected granular location data for the purpose of targeted advertising and the promotion of its products but that the company never used the data for those purposes. “The consequences associated with the App’s collection of that data, the vast majority of which was collected when the App was not in use, represented a loss of Users’ privacy that was not proportional to the potential benefits Tim Hortons may have hoped to
gain from improved targeted promotion of its coffee and associated products,” the report read. The joint investigation was launched about two years ago by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada in conjunction with similar authorities in British Columbia, Quebec and Alberta. It came after reporting from the Financial Post found that the Tim Hortons app tracked users’ geolocation while users were not using the app. According to a presentation to investors shared in May, the restaurant chain’s app has four million active users.
PTI Chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan said on Wednesday that the party had filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking its protection, and he would announce the date for the next march to Islamabad as soon as the apex court rules on the matter. Addressing a social media conference in Peshawar, Imran said he wanted the Supreme Court to grant protection to the PTI’s march and answer whether Pakistanis have the fundamental right to hold a peaceful protest. Govt. tables bill to cap handguns, pledges to buy back assault weapons Legislation stops short of full handgun ban but sets hard limit on number in Canada New gun control legislation the federal government tabled today includes a national freeze on the purchase, sale, importation and transfer of handguns in Canada. The government also is pledging to start buying back thousands of banned assault weapons before the end of the year. While the proposal falls short of a full ban on handguns, it would effectively limit their number in Canada.“In other words, we’re capping the market for handguns,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told a press conference Monday. “As we see gun violence continue to rise, it is our duty to keep taking action.” Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino presented the bill in the House of Commons Monday. “The bill we just tabled represents a milestone amidst a long and difficult battle which takes place on our streets every single day,” Mendicino said at the news conference. “It’s a battle which has claimed too many lives, leaving empty chairs at the dinner table, and empty desks in our classrooms.” The legislation revives some federal meas-

Province starts Burnaby Hospital upgrade as rural hospitals face weekend ward closures $1.3 billion project includes expanded ER and new cancer treatment centre. Premier John Horgan announced the start of a long-awaited hospital upgrade project in Metro Vancouver while acknowledging some hospitals in rural British Columbia are facing temporary ward closures. The premier attended a sod-turning ceremony Monday to mark the beginning of a Burnaby Hospital up-
grade expected to cost about $1.3 billion. Horgan says the upgrade, the hospital’s first major redevelopment in 40 years, includes an expanded emergency department, a new cancer treatment centre and two towers, housing more operating rooms and 399 new beds. However, while addressing the redevelopment plan, Horgan said he understands the concerns of residents in Clearwater, Port McNeill and
other B.C. communities where wards are closing temporarily and patients are being referred to larger hospitals. Horgan says hospitals, similar to many other workplaces, are experiencing worker shortages resulting from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Health Minister Adrian Dix says B.C. has increased the number of health-care workers by 30,000 since the New Democrats were elected five years ago. Source: cbc.ca/
Kevin Falcon called Surrey hospital land “surplus” and sold it off
set aside for a second hospital in Surrey. In 2012, Finance Minister Kevin Falcon used his budget speech to announce the sale of the hospital land, claiming a second hospital wasn’t necessary after renovations to Surrey Memorial: “With the almost $600-million expansion of Surrey Memorial Hospital now underway at its current location, the land is surplus. SURREY – In today’s Question Period, So, rather than letting it sit there costing taxHealth Minister Adrian Dix raised Kevin payers money, we intend to sell it and let the Falcon’s decision to sell land that had been private sector use it.”
By announcing the sale, Falcon broke the promise made by BC Liberal Premier Gordon Campbell to build a hospital on the property. In 2014, it was sold to Fairborne Lands for $20.5 million, despite being appraised at $23.5 million. Fairborne President Christopher Philps gave the BC Liberals $25,000 in 2017, fand made significant contributions in 2020 and 2021. The BC NDP government has acquired land in Cloverdale and is investing $1.66 billion in a new state-of-the art hospital.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 23 May 2022 @ SURREY, BC. Local media reported new facts in the ongoing scandal involving Mayor Doug McCallum and his actions that led to him being charged with Public Mischief by police. On May 20, 2022, local media obtained copies of court documents from the mayor’s criminal court file. Those documents include an “Information to Obtain” (ITO), which is a document the police prepare in order to get a judge to grant them a search warrant. In this case, it was a search warrant to search the mayor’s house. The police were looking, in particular, for the runners the mayor was wearing when he says that another Surrey resident ran over his foot on September 4, 2021, in the Southpointe shopping mall parking lot. The ITO disclosed that police say that McCallum falsely told them that he was pinned up against the vehicle on September 4. They say that the parking lot video shows that was not true. Similarly, police say that McCallum says
He should not wait for that royal assent. “These allegations against this Mayor are shocking and embarrassing said Cllr. Jack Hundial. “They bring the reputation of Surrey, and particularly the reputation of Surrey City Council, into significant disrepute. The residents of this City obviously deserve better than to have a mayor accused of lying to police to further his own political self-interest. And the residents of Surrey should not have to wait for changes in the law to force this Mayor to do what is right. He should do the right thing. He should go and go now.” Further, it is reported that the Surrey Police Board has asked McCallum to step aside – he refused. Council can “do the right thing” for the people of Surrey and demand that McCallum step aside until this fiasco is dealt with. Surrey Connect calls on all members of City Council to call for the mayor to step down. It’s time for all members of Council to stand up and be counted. Surrey Connect Calls For Mccallum To Step Down After Yet Another Bombshell he was limping after being run over. Again, video surveillance shows that he was not. McCallum told police the other Surrey resident involved “tore away” from him in the parking lot. Once again, video surveillance showed that she did not tear away – she rolled away slowly. “This Mayor must step down. He must take his leave until these charges are resolved”, said Cllr. Brenda Locke. Locke stated “If these allegations are correct, this Mayor attempted to have a senior resident of our city charged with a criminal offence in order just to create sympathy – and political benefit for himself and his group of Councillors that support him. If that is so, that is an egregious and shameful breach of trust, and he is not fit to continue as Mayor.” Bill 20 is only waiting for royal assent before becoming law in BC. Bill 20 will make it a requirement that someone in the mayor’s situation step down pending the outcome of his criminal case. He should do the right thing and step down now.
that always support the mayor need to stand up for the residents of Surrey. They need to show the people of Surrey that they are elected to represent our citizens, and not just to do the mayor’s bidding. If the Mayor will not do the right thing, then they must stand with the rest of Council to demand he does it. They owe that much at least to the residents of Surrey. All of Council must demand the mayor go and go now. Source: Cllr. Brenda Locke & Cllr. Jack Hundial

Sonia, Rahul Gandhi summoned in Indian money laundering probe
India’s financial crime-fighting agency wants to question the two most senior members of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, who lead the main opposition Congress party, as it investigates a complaint of money laundering, the party said on Wednesday. The summons by the enforcement directorate is linked to a nine-year-old complaint by a lawmaker of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) against Congress President Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul, the party said. The lawmaker, Subramanian Swamy, had accused the Gandhis of forming a shell company and illegally gaining control of properties worth $300 million. “A disgusting and cowardly conspiracy is
being hatched against the leadership of the Indian National Congress to mislead the country,” the Congress party said in a statement that condemned the notice sent to the Gandhis.“The entire party and every worker will stand shoulder to shoulder with them and we will fight and win this attack on the country’s democracy.” The assets in question had belonged to a firm that published the National Herald newspaper, founded in 1937 by India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who was Rahul Gandhi’s great grandfather. For his part, Swamy welcomed the action by the enforcement directorate and said he hoped they would be jailed, adding on Twitter, “From bail to jail as soon as possible.” An enforcement directorate spokesperson declined to comment. It was not immediately clear why the agency was acting now. Congress ruled for decades after its founders led India to independence in 1947 from British colonial rule. But its fortunes have declined precipitously since the BJP easily defeated it in the general elections of 2014 and 2019. Source: ctvnews.com

Erdogan halts Turkey-Greece talks as rift widens
Turkish president says will pause talks, partly over dispute with Greek PM and what Ankara calls airspace violations. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said Turkey is halting talks with Greece, partly over a dispute with the Greek prime minister and what Ankara calls airspace violations, marking the latest reversal in the neighbours’ long-testy relationship. Last year, after a five-year hiatus, the two NATO members resumed talks to address their differences in the Mediterranean Sea and other bilateral issues. The talks have made little progress and the countries have frequently traded barbs. Erdogan said on Wednesday that Turkey had cancelled a bilateral cooperation platform, dubbed the High-Level Strategic Council, with Greece, adding in a speech to legislators from his governing party that Ankara wanted a foreign policy that “had strong character”. “You keep putting on shows for us with your planes,” Erdogan said, referring to a dispute with Athens about airspace over islands in the Aegean Sea. “What are you doing? Pull
yourself together. Do you not learn lessons from history?” “Don’t try to dance with Turkey. You’ll get tired and stuck on the road. We are no longer holding bilateral talks with them. This Greece will not see reason,” he said. The countries have long been at odds about a range of issues such as maritime boundaries, overlapping claims over their continental shelves, airspace, refugees and Cyprus. The talks had made little headway, but were a means for the two countries to air out their grievances without resorting to a potential armed standoff as had occurred as recently as two years ago.,Source: aljazera.com
In DR Congo, the most-neglected country on the list for the second year running, a third of the population went hungry last year. The world is paying too little attention to a slew of mass displacements of people across Africa, risking starvation deaths and prolonging conflicts, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has warned. “With the all-absorbing war in Europe’s Ukraine, I fear African suffering will be pushed further into the shadows,” the aid group’s chief Jan Egeland said in a statement published Wednesday. The countries with the most neglected crises according to the NRC are, in order: the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Burkina Faso, Cameroon, South Sudan, Chad, Mali, Sudan, Nigeria, Burundi and Ethiopia. It is the first time that all 10 crises on the Council’s annual list – based on shortfalls in the international political response, media coverage, and the amount of aid pledged — are on the African continent. In the DRC, the most-neglected country on the list for the second year running, approx-
imately 27 million people went hungry last year, equivalent to one-third of the population. Meanwhile, 5.5 million people were internally displaced and one million more fleeing abroad, the aid group said. But there were no high-level meetings or donor conferences about the DRC’s hunger crisis or the conflict in the country’s east, and only 44 percent of the $2bn requested by the UN for humanitarian aid was received. By contrast, the NRC highlighted that it took just one day this March for a humanitarian appeal for Ukraine to be almost fully funded. Source: aljazera.com
Israeli forces have shot and killed a Palestinian woman at the Arroub refugee camp in the southern Israeli-occupied West Bank. The Palestinian health ministry identified the woman as 31-year-old Ghufran Hamed Warasneh, and said that she had been shot in the chest. In a statement, the Israeli army said “an assailant armed with a knife advanced toward an IDF [Israeli army] soldier who was conducting routine security activity”. However, witnesses told Al Jazeera’s Givara Budeiri that, in their view, Warasneh had posed little threat to the soldiers, and that the knife was small. Budeiri also added that Warasneh had started a new job at a radio station three days prior to being killed. “She was leaving her home on her way
to work, according to eyewitnesses,” said Budeiri. Warasneh was shot just before 8am (5:00 GMT) at the entrance to the camp, which is located between Bethlehem and Hebron, and where Israeli soldiers are permanently stationed. She was transferred by the Palestinian Red Crescent to al-Ahli hospital in Hebron, but died shortly afterwards, despite efforts to resuscitate her. The Palestinian Red Crescent said that Israeli forces had obstructed their ability to access Warasneh and took 20 minutes to allow medics to treat her. Doctors at the hospital said the bullet she was shot with had pierced her heart. Warasneh, who hailed from the nearby village of al-Shuyukh, was a former prisoner. The Palestinian Prisoners Society (PPS) said in a statement mourning her killing that she had recently spent three months in Israeli prisons, and was released at the start of April 2022. Local and international rights groups have condemned what they call Israel’s excessive use of force and “shoot-to-kill policy” against Palestinians, including suspected assailants, in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. NDP-Liberal government doubles down on delays at airports
Ottawa, ON – Melissa Lantsman, Conservative Shadow Minister for Transport, and Luc Berthold, Deputy Leader of the Official Opposition and Québec Political Lieuten-

Thanks to the NDP-Liberal government, you’re likely to continue facing delays. “Today, the NDP-Liberal government voted against our common-sense motion that would have returned to pre-pandemic rules and service levels for travel, and helped end the delays we’re seeing at airports across the country. “As Canadian travelers are being subject to extreme delays, line-ups, bottlenecks, and
missed connections because of unnecessary protocols, our allies across the world, including the European Union and the United States, have loosened rules for passengers on flights and in airports. “Airports have directly cited the Liberals’ policies as the reason for these delays, as processing times for international arriving passengers have increased by two-tofour times – sometimes taking longer than two minutes.“Industry experts from a wide range of disciplines are calling on the government to drop travel restrictions. These restrictions have many impacts on Canadian travel times, our economy, and the country’s
ment to transit in our region,” said Mayor Doug McCallum. “With more and more people moving to Surrey and working within city limits, the Surrey Langley SkyTrain will have no shortage of riders when it goes into service in 2028. With 39% of emissions coming from gas cars in Surrey, this transportation megaproject will make it easier for our residents to choose fast, convenient, and reliable transit over costly gas vehicles. that will result in cleaner and healthier communities in Surrey.”
international reputation. “After two long years of the pandemic, Canadians are finally looking to return to normalcy and begin travelling again. Unfortunately, the NDP-Liberal government continues to cling to outdated and unnecessary protocols that are exacerbating delays. “Conservatives will continue to advocate for common-sense solutions to prevent these unacceptable delays at our airports, and to get our aviation, tourism, and business sectors back on track. We will continue to hold the NDP-Liberal government to account for these unacceptable delays.” Source: Office of Melissa Lantsman, M.P.

Canadians who die every single day because of COVID-19,” he told reporters on Wednesday.“I know people are eager to get back to things we love but what will also further damage our tourism industry is if we get another wave.” Industry groups
held a press conference later Wednesday, calling on the federal government to alleviate travel pain points, such as long lineups and delays, in time for the summer travel season. “We did our part to keep Canadians safe and now it is finally our turn to recover. Travel is back with a vengeance and we could not be happier but the passenger experience at our Canadian airports is a challenge,” said Susie Grynol, President and CEO of the Hotel Association of Canada. Interim Canadian Airports Council President Monette Pasher said while the organization welcomes the government’s steps to increase Canadian Air
Transport Security Authority (CATSA) and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) staffing levels, more must be done. “We’re urging the federal government to take three concrete actions in the short term to immediately alleviate pressure on the system. They include: removing onsite mandatory testing from Canada’s airports, removing the Public Health Agency of Canada’s duplicate health check questions at government custom checkpoints and at the international border and removing vaccination mandates for CATSA and CBSA workers,” she said. On Tuesday, the Public Health Agency
of Canada announced that border rules would be extended until at least June 30. Foreign tourists will continue to be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated, and unvaccinated Canadian citizens or permanent residents are also still required to show proof of a molecular COVID-19 test taken prior to entering Canada and quarantine for 14 days. DP Leader Jagmeet Singh made the following statement: “This National Indigenous History Month, we recognize and celebrate the diverse heritage of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. Indigenous peoples have called this land home for thousands of years, and Canadians can learn a great deal from these Indigenous histories. This month provides an opportunity for all Canadians to celebrate the diverse heritages of the First people of this land, and
month, and every month, we have a collective responsibility to honour the stories and contributions of Indigenous Peoples, who have lived on – and cared for – these lands since time immemorial. “From the Maliseet in Atlantic Canada, to Inuit across Inuit Nunangat, from the Métis across the Prairies and beyond, to the Haida people of the Pacific Northwest, Indigenous communities have diverse histories, customs, spiritualities, and languages. This month is an opportunity for us all to learn about local Indigenous history, and to truly walk the path of reconciliation. “Only by acknowledging the truths of the past, can we begin to dress the wounds they created, and begin the journey of healing. Right across the country, the findings of unmarked burial sites near former residential
schools has confirmed what Survivors and Indigenous communities have known about for decades, providing a tragic reminder of the painful and lasting impacts of colonialism. Over the past year, I’ve had the opportunity to visit many communities and hear directly from Survivors and their families how the painful legacy of residential schools lives with them every day. The Government of Canada will continue to provide the funding and resources communities need to search for unmarked burial sites, uncover the truth of what happened at residential schools, and continue on their healing journey. We are also fully committed to implementing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. By learning about Indigenous history in our communities and across the country, we can

The injustices and barriers that still exist as a result of that legacy and government inaction must be addressed and removed. But for decades, federal governments haven’t done the work needed to address the systemic racism Indigenous peoples continue to face. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls have helped Canadians understand the devastating and ongoing impacts of residential
institutions. They have also laid out a path forward to address the inequalities and devastating rates of violence against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people. All of the Calls to Justice and the Calls to Action need to be implemented without delay to save lives and help Indigenous peoples heal. We know that Indigenous communities have fought tirelessly for clean drinking water, affordable housing, adequate investments in education and health care, and even to recover the bodies of their lost children found at former residential institutions. For too long their voices have been ignored. Indigenous peoples deserve a federal government that works with them to ensure a more equitable future for everyone. They deserve to be heard for their expertise, knowledge and solutions that they know will work
for them. As we celebrate this National Indigenous History Month, it’s important to look back at the past and for the federal government to take responsibility for the harms they have caused Indigenous peoples. Every child in Canada should be taught about the histories of Indigenous peoples so that we can build a better, fairer future for everyone. Indigenous peoples voices must be celebrated. New Democrats are committed to working with Indigenous communities and celebrating their enormous contributions. Together we can build a country where Indigenous histories and cultures are not only preserved and honoured, but also given the resources and opportunities needed to thrive for generations to come.” Source: orilliamatters.com
lice started three and half years ago, and in this short time the Surrey Police Service has evolved from a motion in Council to Surrey Police Service officers patrolling the streets. To date, 85 uniformed SPS officers have been deployed to work alongside RCMP. That number will increase to 295 SPS officers in the next 12 months,” said McCallum. “The progress we are making in the transition has allowed us to create the Community Services Department. A major component of this new department is dedicated to enhancing our approach to supportive housing.. Highlighted in the speech were a number of achievements that have been realized since Mayor McCallum took office: In 2021, the City planted 10,272 trees on public property and in 2022, that number will increase to 12,300. City Council has committed over $45 million to new parkland acquisition, resulting in 225 acres of new parkland in Surrey. The Guaranteed Permitting Timelines program has surpassed its target of 10 weeks, reducing the average processing time for a single-family permit from nearly 15 weeks in 2021 to 8.9. By the end of 2022, the City’s Electric Vehicle Charging Network will near 100 charging
stations to support the growing number of electric vehicles on the roads. Now in it’s fourth year, the City’s Love Where You Live campaign is more popular than ever. In 2021, participants contributed 1,700 volunteer hours, cleaned 208 kilometres of Surrey roads, organized 75 community clean-ups and over 200 people committed to the weekly 20-minute clean up challenge. In 2021, building permit values totalled more than $2 billion. Not only was this achieved in the midst of a pandemic but it marks the second highest recorded value in the City’s history; the all-time record was set in the pre-pandemic year of 2019 when $2.3 billion in building permit values were recorded. In 2021, Surrey led the way with the highest number of new home construction for the Metro region. Housing starts in Surrey totaled over 58 hundred units last year, which is 6% more than Vancouver. In partnership with all levels of government, the City of Surrey is delivering on this type of much-needed housing across our city. In 2021, a total of 139 Supportive Housing Units opened in Surrey. This year, another 387 Supportive and Transitional Housing. Since taking office, Council has made significant investments through the $428 million

Surrey Mayor delivers 2022 State of the City Address Surrey, BC – In the annual State of the City Address, Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum highlighted the progress and achievements of the City over the last four years. From holding residential property taxes to 2.9 percent, to investing in 21 capital projects through the $428 million Surrey Invests program, to purchasing 225 acres of new parkland, this Council has delivered on its promises. “Despite the challenges from the COVID pandemic, Council never strayed from the goals we set at the start of our mandate,” said Mayor Doug McCallum. “The vision of what Council wanted to achieve in four years was ambitious and demanding. It required massive change, not for the sake of change, but for what is best for Surrey. The City’s progress and rise in prominence has not gone unnoticed. Senior levels of government are investing in the City, from funding new housing to rapid transit expansion, from replacing an aging bridge to a new hospital, Surrey is on the radar. From my vantage point, the sky is the limit. Together, we can and will take Surrey to new heights.” In his annual Address, Mayor McCallum also provided an update on the City’s municipal police service transition. “The transition from RCMP to a city po-
Health Canada issues advisory about rapid antigen tests after calls to poison control centres Potential risks associated with the misuse or accidental ingestion or spillage of COVID-19 rapid antigen test kit solutions on the skin, federal health agency says By: Debora Kelly, Feb 27, 2022 ealth Canada has issued an advisory warning of the potential risk of rapid antigen test kits after about 50 calls were made to poison control centres in Canada regarding “accidental exposure” causing minor health issues. “Following an increase in reports to poison control centres, Health Canada is advising Canadians about potential risks associated with the misuse or accidental ingestion or spillage of COVID-19 rapid antigen test kit solutions on the skin,” the advisory states.
H
The kits — which have been widely distributed at grocery and drug stores in Ontario in recent weeks — are safe and effective when used as intended, the agency advises. However, many test kits include liquid solutions with chemical preservatives, including sodium azide and Proclin, that may be poisonous if swallowed or absorbed through the skin, particularly in children and pets, according to the advisory. Small doses of sodium azide can lower blood pressure, and larger doses may cause more serious health effects. “Proclin is also found in many kits. It contains chemicals that can cause skin and eye irritation, as well as allergic reactions. Accidental ingestion or skin exposure to very
small quantities of liquid solutions would not be expected to cause the serious effects associated with larger doses. However, even small quantities may cause effects in small children and pets.” Health Canada is advising Canadians to help mitigate the risks associated with misuse, accidental ingestion or skin exposure. Keep rapid antigen test kits and solutions out of the reach of children and pets. Do not swallow the solutions, and avoid eye and skin contact. Wash hands thoroughly after use. If spillage occurs, rinse well with water. Follow all instructions for proper disposal. Report any health product-related side effects or complaints to Health Canada.

Iqra Islamic School’s “Islam Around the World” a huge success
By Arhum Arslan, Grade 3 qra Islamic School hosted an exhibition on May 25 called “ Islam Around the World”. This was the first time Iqra School hosted an in-school exhibition since the pandemic. This exhibition was about countries with Muslims living in them. My grade, Gr.3-2 was doing Philippines. I never knew that in 2022, there are about seven million Muslims in the Philippines.
I
The beneficial thing about this is that students can learn places, such as Russia have Muslims in their country. I noticed that the higher the grade, the easier the country they worked on. This is one of many events that made me in awe. Some classes were even displaying cultural clothing and decoration. The amazing thing is that the students worked extremely hard on this event. How do I know? Well be-
cause when I went there, I saw the challenging work of the students. They made extraordinary projects and put so much effort in these projects. I will end this with my own words: Even big communities can have small parts of different cultures living together.
the classes and see the incredible work of students and staff. Exhibits covered a wide range of countries including, Egypt, Syria, Argentina, Qatar, Yemen, England, Russia, Somalia, Saudi Arabia, Khanate of Bukhara, Philippines, Vietnam, Morocco, Japan, Germany, Pakistan, India etc... Congratulations to everyone for this Editor’s note: The Miracle had the opportunity to tour successful event!

the Companions of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in the Madinan phase of the sirah were either in the prime of their youth or children who grew up in his company. Their biographies provide abundant information of how their upbringing was, whether pre-teens, young adults or as old age came about. Their Islam shaped the way they lead the nation. Given the self-serving, individualism-driven mindset of today, it is important to encourage these positive qualities in order to build a healthy level of self-esteem and confidence, while at the same time safeguard-

of hypocrisy and children are the first to notice that. Roohi Tahir, an author with Yaqeen Institute, highlights an important passage: “Ibn Al-Qayyim (d. 1350 CE) mentions that foolishness and short-sightedness are attributed to hypocrisy. Those who exhibit these characteristics lack spiritual insight and are prone to falling into doubt and following their desires. Eventually, this may lead to a contradiction between belief and practice—and ultimately, to one belittling the religion. He describes a “people prone to laziness and laxity in fulfilling the orders of the All-Merciful and because of this they find sincerity burdensome.”

India sentences Kashmir rebel Yasin Malik to life imprisonment
A court in New Delhi sentences the top Kashmiri pro-freedom leader to life term in ‘terrorism’ funding case. special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in the Indian capital New Delhi has sentenced iconic Kashmiri pro-independence leader Yasin Malik to life imprisonment in “terror” funding case. Malik, one of Indian-administered Kashmir’s prominent pro-freedom leaders, is the chief of now banned Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF). The group renounced violence in 1994. The court prosecutor had sought the death penalty for Malik, who has pleaded guilty to all charges. Malik, 56, last week was convicted of “terrorist” acts, including illegally raising funds, membership in a terrorist organisation, criminal conspiracy, and sedition. The People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD), a coalition of pro-India parties in the region, termed Malik’s life imprisonment as “unfortunate”. “Life imprisonment given to Yasin Malik is unfortunate and a setback to the efforts for peace. We are afraid that this will further compound the uncertainties in the region and will only fuel more alienation and separatist feelings,” the group said in a statement on Wednesday. The “… court has delivered its verdict but not justice,” the statement said. The mobile internet services in some parts of the region’s main city of Srinagar were suspended soon after the verdict was announced by the anti-terrorism court based in the Indian capital.
A
Pakistan condemns the verdict
Pakistan has condemned Malik’s “malafide” conviction and sentencing on “a grossly suspicious and contrived case”. “The abhorrent Indian attempts seeking to defile the legitimate struggle of the Kashmiris for their right to self-determination as ‘terrorism’ only substantiate India’s deeply etched credentials as a ‘serial violator’ of human rights and usurper of the fundamental freedoms of the Kashmiris,” Pakistan’s foreign ministry said in a statement. Pakistani Foreign Minister Bilawal BhuttoZardari said Malik was convicted after “a sham trial”. “India can never silence Kashmiris’ voice for freedom and self-determination. Pakistan stands with Kashmiri brothers and sisters, will continue to provide all possible support in their just struggle,” Bhutto-Zardari tweeted.
During the trial, which Malik’s family and lawyers alleged was not fair, the Kashmiri leader rejected the charges and said he was a freedom fighter. Malik was arrested by the NIA in a “terrorfunding case” shortly after the JKLF was banned in 2019. The agency charged him with receiving funds “from Pakistan to carry out terrorist activities and stonepelting during the Kashmir unrest, especially in 2010 and 2016”.
Mishal Malik
Yasin Malik’s wife Mishal Malik holds a sign as she attends a ‘Black Day’ protest in Islamabad, Pakistan against rights violations in Indian-administered Kashmir [File: Akhtar Soomro/Reuters] In August the same year, New Delhi scrapped the special status of Indian-administered Kashmir and unilaterally divided the country’s only Muslim-majority region into two federally controlled territories. The move was followed by months of military and communications lockdown in the region and arrests of major political and rebel leaders. Muhammad Junaid, a Kashmiri academic based in the US, told Al Jazeera that “Malik’s conviction is the politics of revenge”. “Malik’s conviction and sentencing is not based on any incriminating evidence Indian courts were presented with. It is about two things: one, separating Kashmiri leaders from their people so that the Indian state can continue its settler colonial project; second, a Hindu nationalist spectacle meant to show Indians that Modi’s India can arbitrarily inflict violence against Kashmir Muslims. “It is politics of revenge against a people already suffering from decades-old occupation and military control,” he said from New York. ....Source: aljazera.com
Imran says did not have absolute power as prime minister
P
TI Chairman Imran Khan on Wednesday admitted he did not enjoy absolute power as the prime minister, indicating that the actual centres of power in the country lay elsewhere and “everyone knows where that is.” In an interview with anchorperson Sami Ibrahim for Bol News programme Tajzia, Imran was asked to recall the events of the night of the no-confidence vote against him, who was issuing orders and who had impeded the cases against the PPP and PMLN leaders. Imran said his government had been “weak” when it came to power and had to seek coalition partners, adding that if the same situation were to arise again, he would opt for reelections and seek a majority government or none at all. “Our hands were tied. We were blackmailed from everywhere. Power wasn’t with us. Everyone knows where the power lies in Pakistan so we had to rely on them,” he said without elaborating any further who he was referring to.
“We relied on them all the time. They did a lot of good things too but they didn’t do many things that should’ve been done. They have the power because they control institutions such as NAB (National Accountability Bureau), which wasn’t in our control.” He claimed that while his government had the responsibility, it did not have all the power and authority. “No management works if I have responsibility but have no complete power and authority. A system works only when responsibility and authority are in one place.” Imran said it was imperative for the country to have a “strong army” due to the threat posed by the enemies but said there was also the need to strike a “balance” between having a strong army and a strong government. ‘If establishment doesn’t make right calls, country will head towards suicide’ The PTI chief said the current political situation was a problem for the country as well as the establishment. “If the establishment
