Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “A believer who performs Qurbani in sincerity will reap a reward for every hair of the animal he/she sacrifices.” (Tirmidhi)

Q&A: The hajj pilgrimage and its significance in Islam
ver two million Muslims from around the world are beginning the five-day hajj pilgrimage. They will circle Islam’s most sacred site, the cubeshaped Kaaba in the Saudi Arabian city of Mecca, and take part in a series of rituals intended to bring about greater humility and unity among Muslims. Here’s a look at the pilgrimage and what it means for Muslims:
What is the purpose of the hajj?
The hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam, and all able-bodied Muslims are required to perform it once in their lifetime. The hajj is seen as a chance to wipe clean past sins and start fresh. Many seek to deepen their faith on the hajj, with some women taking on the Islamic hair covering known as “hijab” upon returning. Despite the physical challenges of the hajj, many people rely on canes or crutches and insist on walking the routes. Those who cannot afford the hajj are sometimes financed by charities or community leaders. Others save their entire lives to make the journey. A few even walk thousands of miles by foot to Saudi Arabia, taking months to arrive.
What is the history of the hajj?
While following a route the Prophet Muhammad once walked, the rites of hajj are believed to ultimately trace the footsteps of the prophets Ibrahim and Ismail, or Abraham and Ishmael, as they are named in the Bible. Muslims believe Ibrahim’s faith was tested when God commanded him to sacrifice his only son, Ismail. Ibrahim was prepared to submit to the command, but then God stayed his hand, sparing his son. In the Christian and Jewish versions of the story, Abraham is
ordered to kill his other son, Isaac. Pilgrims also trace the path of Ibrahim’s wife, Hagar, who Muslims believe ran between two hills seven times searching for water for her dying son. Tradition holds that God then brought forth a spring that runs to this day. That spring, known as the sacred well of Zamzam, is believed to possess healing powers, and pilgrims often return from the hajj with bottles of its water as gifts. Why is the Kaaba so important to Muslims? Islamic tradition holds that the Kaaba was built by Ibrahim and Ismail as a house of monotheistic worship thousands of years ago. Over the years, the Kaaba was reconstructed and attracted different kinds of pilgrims, including early Christians who once lived in the Arabian Peninsula. In preIslamic times, the Kaaba was used to house pagan idols worshiped by local tribes. Muslims do not worship the Kaaba, but it is Islam’s most sacred site because it represents the metaphorical house of God and the oneness of God in Islam. Observant Muslims around the world face toward the Kaaba during their five daily prayers.
What are the rituals performed during the hajj?
Pilgrims enter into a state of spiritual purity known as “ihram” that is aimed at shedding symbols of materialism, giving up worldly pleasures and focusing on the inner self over outward appearance. Women forgo makeup and perfume and wear loose-fitting clothing and a head covering, while men dress in seamless, white terry cloth garments. The white garments are forbidden to contain any stitching — a restriction meant to emphasize the equal-
ity of all Muslims and prevent wealthier pilgrims from differentiating themselves with more elaborate garments. Muslims are f or bi d d e n from engaging in sexual intercourse, cutting their hair or trimming their nails while in ihram. It is also forbidden for pilgrims to argue, fight or lose their tempers during the hajj. Inevitably, though, the massive crowds and physical exhaustion of the journey test pilgrims’ patience and tolerance.
The first day of hajj
The hajj traditionally begins in Mecca, with a smaller “umrah” pilgrimage that can be performed year-round. To perform the umrah, Muslims circle the Kaaba counterclockwise seven times while reciting supplications to God, then walk between the two hills traveled by Hagar. Mecca’s Grand Mosque, the world’s largest, encompasses the Kaaba and the two hills. Before heading to Mecca, many pilgrims visit the city of Medina, where the Prophet Muhammad is buried and where he built his first mosque.
They scale a hill called Jabal al-Rahma, or Mountain of Mercy. It is here where Muhammad delivered his final sermon, calling for equality and for Muslim unity. He reminded his followers of women’s rights and that every Muslim life and property is sacred. Around sunset, pilgrims head to an area called Muzdalifa, 5.5 miles west of Arafat. Many walk, while others use buses. They spend the night there and pick up pebbles along the way that will be used in a symbolic stoning of the devil back in Mina, where Muslims believe the devil tried to talk Ibrahim out of submitting to God’s will.
The final three days of hajj
The last three days of the hajj are marked by three events: a final circling of the Kaaba, casting stones in Mina and removing the ihram. Men often shave their heads at the end in a sign of renewal. The final days of hajj coincide with Eid alAdha, or the festival of sacrifice, celebrated The second day of hajj by Muslims around the world to comAfter spending the night in the massive val- memorate Ibrahim’s test of faith. Ways to Stone Shaytan Out of Your Life
By: Fatima Khaled
hen Ibrahim was going to sacrifice his son, Shaytan came to him in the form of a man to try and distract him and encourage him to disobey Allah , so Ibrahim pelted stones at him. In part 1 we looked at different sacrifices that we could make to become closer to Allah , but what about when Shaytan comes to us to distract us? How can we pelt the Shaytan out of our lives? Here are 7 productive habits that we can use as our stones against Shaytan.
W
Keep your salah on time
This is the first stone you need to throw at Shaytan, as he knows that if you leave your salah, you will be drowning in sins, and your heart will become hard. Salah is a believer’s way of keeping away from sin as Allah says “ Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the
remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do.” [Qur’an: Chapter 29, Verse 45].But this happens when we are praying with sincerity and humility, otherwise it becomes just a physical ritual. One of the biggest deceptions that shaytan causes us to believe is that you can’t pray when you are committing sin. Salah is not dependent on your sins, and Allah has never said a person should not pray because they did something wrong. Our beloved prophet narrated “By Allah, Allah is more pleased with the repentance of His servant than what one of you would do on finding the lost camel in the waterless desert. When he draws near Me by the span of his hand. I draw near him by the length of a cubit and when he draws near Me by the length of a cubit. I draw near him by the length of a fathom and when he draws near Me walking I draw close to him hurriedly.” [Muslim] Take this step to establish your constant connection with Allah . Work on establishing your salah and take the first
step to pelting the Shaytan. Stay among righteous company It is hard striving to practice especially on your own, especially today where we have this notion of trying to fit in, and we have a lot of pressure growing up not to stand out. And so the second way to pelt the Shaytan is by choosing righteous company. Choose the company that encourages you to get closer to Allah, that reminds you to pray when you forget, that helps you to learn more about your Creator instead of idle gossip. Choose the kind of company that encourages you to keep away from what displeases Allah . Choose the kind of company that invites angels to stay with you.“No people sit in a gathering remembering Allah, But the angels surround them, mercy covers them, tranquillity descends upon them and Allah remembers them before those who are with Him.” [Ibn Majah]
Repent to Allah frequently
With this third action, let us stone Shaytan to dust, and build an emotional connection with Allah , by making sincere tawbah. “…Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant…” [Qur’an: Chapter 2, Verse 222] As long as you are alive, you can make tawbah, do not let Shaytan deceive you into thinking that any sin is too big for Allah to forgive. For every moment that you are in a state of tawbah repenting for your sins, Allah loves you. Think about how beautiful that is, that Allah loves the servant who turns to Him in repentance.Humble yourself before Allah and tell Him your worries and your fears. Thank Him for giving you this opportunity to draw closer to
Him, and let your soul be filled with ease and contentment.
Change what you feed your mind The one who is knowledgeable, Shaytan’s hold over them is weak. Sometimes when people make an attempt to get closer to Allah , they find that they struggle, and they don’t feel like they are changing. That is because they are still feeding their mind and soul idle useless material. If you are still mentally consuming material that distracts you from Allah – whether this is in the form of inappropriate TV series, music, books or anything like that-, then you leave a door open for Shaytan to come and distract. Feed your mind with knowledge and learn about your Creator and the beloved prophets because Allah says “…Only those fear Allah , from among His servants, who have knowledge. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Forgiving.” [Qur’an: Chapter 35, Verse 28]. Start making an attempt to at least reduce -if not cut out- the material that takes you away from the remembrance of your Creator. Incorporate sunnah into your life We’re on the 5th stone now, so let us try to incorporate more sunnah into our life by starting off with 2 simple things, siyam (fasting) and nawafil (voluntary prayers). Let us train ourselves to fast at least 3 days a month and incorporate at least 2 raka’as of sunnah prayers into our day. Why do I say this? Fasting is one of the best methods to get closer to Allah as you become conscious of every action that you make during the day to ensure that your fast is accepted. By incorporating sunnah prayers into your

can only be done during the specified dates i-e After Eid Prayer (10th of Dhul Hijjah) and before sunset of 13th Dhul Hijjah. Whoever does not follow these dates must know that their sacrifice will not be valid if it is not offered between the 10th - 13th Dhul Hijjah. (Sahih Bukhari: 5545 and Sahih Muslim: 1141) 2- The animal to be sacrificed has to be one of the cattle approved by the Shariah, which are; Camels, Cattle, Sheep, and Goat. (Surah Hajj 22:34 and Surah Al-Anaam 6:143) 3- A sheep or goat is used as a single offering and is sufficient for one household whereas a camel or a cow can be shared by seven people. [Sahih Muslim: 1318(a) and 1961(a)] 4- The animal to be sacrificed has to be an adult and should have reached the age stipulated in Shariah. Goat, either male or female, of at least one year of age. Sheep, either male or female, of at least six months of age. Cow, ox, buffalo of at least two years of age. Camel, male or female, of at least five years of age. 5- The animal must be a healthy one and should be free from obvious defects. he sacrifice of animal or Qurbani on the day of Eid al Adha is a confirmed Sunnah of not only Prophet Ibrahim (A.S.) but also of our beloved Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W.). However, some scholars are of the opinion that it is ‘Wajib’ (obligatory). Sacrificing cattle in the way of Allah is a great act of worship. It brings the person offering the sacrifice close to Allah. Abu Hurairah (R.A.) reported that Prophet (S.A.W.) said:“Whoever can afford it [sacrifice], but does not offer a sacrifice, let him not come near our prayer place.” (Ibn Majah: 3123) The Hadith clearly mentions the importance of sacrificing in the way of Allah. It also includes a warning for those Muslims who have the means to offer a sacrifice on Eid ul Adha but don’t do so due to some worldly reason or lame excuse.

Both Eid ul Fitr and Eid Al-Adha have great significance in Islam as the same is evident from the following Hadith of Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W.): “Allah has given you better than those feasts (festivals of non-believers): the ‘Eid-ul-Adha’ and ‘Eid-ul-Fitr.’” (An-Nasai: 1556) Fasting on Eid al-Adha and Eid ul-Fitr are strictly forbidden as the same is obvious from the following Hadith of our beloved Prophet (S.A.W.): “No fasting is permissible on the two days of Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha.”(S.Bukhari: 1995)
First 10 days of Dhul Hijjah
Dhul Hijjah is one of the four sacred months of the Islamic Calendar and the first 10 days of this month are the days that are selected by Allah as the best days of the year. (Surah At Taubah 9:36) Sahih Bukhari: 3197)Surah Al-Fajr 89:1-2)

The animal to be sacrificed must be in the person’s full possession (it is not stolen or taken by force or in joint procession or held in pledge). 7- The person who intends to offer sacrifice should not remove any hair, nail or skin from the sunset on the last day of Dhul Qadah until the sacrifice is done on the day of Eid. (Ibn Majah: 3150) 8- The person should slaughter the animal with his own hands in order to fulfill the Sunnah. What is Eid al Adha?
id ul Adha is a festival celebrated among Muslims all over the world in remembrance of the sacrifice that Prophet Ibrahim (A.S.) made out of his strong faith in Allah. Ibrahim (AS) showed a willingness to sacrifice his son Prophet Ismail (A.S.) but his son was replaced with a lamb by Allah. Allah was so pleased with Ibrahim’s (A.S.) submission to Him that He made this demonstration of sacrifice and faith a permanent part of a Muslim’s life. This event is mentioned in Quran - Surah As-Saffat (37:102). Hence, every year on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, Muslims all over the world celebrate Eid ul Azha. On this day, Muslims slaughter

Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W.) said: “No good deeds done on other days are superior to those done on these (first ten days of Dhul Hijja).’”(Sahih Bukhari: 969) 2- Rituals of Hajj are started during the first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah (from 8th to 13th). 3- Fasting on the day of Arafah (9th Dhul Hijjah) is a confirmed Sunnah of our beloved prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) but only for those who are not performing Hajj. Ways to Stone Shaytan Out of Your Life
day, you go above and beyond doing what is obligatory and you make an attempt to show your love for Allah by doing something you do not have to do except for the sake of His closeness. If you want to start with an even smaller act, then start off by moistening your tongue with remembrance and glorification of Allah and let the reward of these light words weigh heavy on your scales.
Strengthen ties of kinship How sad would it be that after throwing 5 stones at the Shaytan, you find the 6th stone too heavy? In part 1, we discussed sacrificing our ego and pride to restore ties and kinship and again we will reiterate this because it is a very easy way for Shaytan to cause fitnah (disagreements) in families. The Prophet said “The person who perfectly maintains the ties of kinship is not the one who does it because he gets recompensed by his
relatives (for being kind and good to them), but the one who truly maintains the bonds of kinship is the one who persists in doing so even though the latter has severed the ties of kinship with him.” [Bukhari] .Connect with the one who has cut you off. Let go of any ill feelings in your heart and restore any ties of kinship in your family that have been severed. Do this for the sake of Allah and I promise you will be rewarded more than you can ever imagine. Let go of the hurt and pain that your family has caused you and forgive. Let your heart be soft with the remembrance of Allah so that you are able to make these sacrifices. Our family ties are an immense opportunity to gain reward and become closer to Allah .
we will die, and so we must make use of every minute that we have. When you re member death, all of the time, it allows all of the above stones to be thrown easily as it allows you to fight your nafs and do what you know will please Allah . When Shaytan comes to you and tries to encourage you to do what displeases Allah think to yourself that if you were to die at that moment, how Remember death often This is the last stone that we will throw at would you justify your actions to Allah ? the Shaytan and possibly one of the most Would you truly have an acceptable justifiimportant stones. None of us know when cation for missing your salah, or cutting off
family ties, or not spending in the way of Allah ? If you pelt Shaytan in these 7 ways, then the 4 sacrifices that we discussed in part 1 will become so much easier. These 7 ways of pelting the Shaytan will only bring you closer to Allah and increase your love for Him. And of course when you love Allah , pleasing Him becomes the best way of life to have. Source:

Russia is ‘weaponizing’ food, Joly tells Commonwealth LHC orders re-counting of votes for Punjab partners as meeting ends without formal rebuke of Moscow CM election excluding PTI dissidents
Commonwealth leaders ended their first meeting in four years on Saturday by noting the United Nations resolution that condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine — but the organization issued no rebuke of its own. Outside of the conference room, it was left to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau — and more pointedly, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly — to lay the blame for the impending
food security crisis at the feet of Moscow. Both Britain and Canada spent two days at the Commonwealth meeting trying to convince members on the fence to blame Russia for soaring word-wide food and fuel prices. It was, at times, a struggle to get mention of support for Ukraine in the final communiqué. In the end it was there, but with no direct condemnation of Russia, which has supporters among the 54-nation body. “Yes, we recognize the challenges — politically — that some member-states face,” Trudeau said, speaking to reporters as the meeting ended. Trudeau said he made it his mission to argue Ukraine’s case to the room and in meetings with individual leaders. Trudeau defends military spending ahead of NATO summit as new report projects decline Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is defending Canadian military spending after a new NATO report this week showed Canada heading in the wrong direction. Canada and other members of the NATO military alliance agreed in 2014 to increase their defence spending to two per cent of their national gross domestic product. But the new report released by NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg on Monday estimates Canadian defence spending will actually drop as a share of GDP this year. Ahead of a NATO summit in Spain, where the issue of defence spending will be front and centre, Trudeau says Canada is investing more money in new fighter jets and North American defences. Celebrates Canada Day for good reason
By: Khadija Nadeem, Gr 11 Miracle’s Writer day marked on everyone’s calendar, Canada Day is a staple part of many Canadians’ experience, it holds meaning for everyone whether you’re an immigrant or a refugee or have been here for all your life yet it’s easy to forget that before any of us were here, the Indigenous were. This Canada Day, and all Canada Days, it’s important to shed some light on the experience of the Indigenous and the privilege that all of us have to be living on their unceded territory. It’s important to recognize that the history of our land began long before the first Canada Day, Canada is a part of Turtle Island and is acknowledged as a diverse place. An important part of Canada Day is continuing to educate and be a part of the change that will work towards meeting our Truth and Reconciliation goals.
A
we celebrating in truth?
Regardless, it is every citizen’s duty to understand the history, significance, and meaning behind Canada Day so that they know what exactly it is they’re “celebrating”. Our country’s origins are rooted deeply in colonialism, assimilation, ethnic genocide and overall injustice so when July 1st comes around every year, “celebrating” it with the appropriate intentions, knowledge, and understanding is extremely important. In 1982, July 1st was dubbed Canada Day and officially became the national day to commemorate the state’s independence from Great Britain. Nowadays, citizens celebrate the occasion with fireworks, parties, and a sense of, often misplaced, pride. Yet, there is a significance to the celebration. Our horrific and maybe unforgivable past is not to say that Canada’s current diversity, acceptance, and direction in Celebrating Canada Day change isn’t something to can be problematic and celebrate. This Canada Day, for good reason, what are the goal is to celebrate Canadian development from
what our nation once represented and to acknowledge that change is in progress, and we are all expected to hold responsibility for what comes next. A citizen’s responsibilities and duties are endless and with Canada Day approaching, our patriotism should motivate us to do better for our communities, our societies, and our country. Some are obligations, like obeying laws or paying taxes but those we are not obligated to do, society holds us accountable for. As a Canadian, I am aware of my right to vote or be informed for example. This means that for the benefit of myself and my peers, I should observe those rights. Now studies show that Canadian ‘nationalism’ or patriotism differs significantly from that of the Americans or any other country in the world. First of all, Canadians have adopted a dual view on nationalism, surveys show it isn’t necessarily associated with the white supremacy or blatant racism that many Americans would think it is. In Canada,

here is Canada? Canada is a large country in the northern hemisphere. The country belongs to the North American continent. people accept it because it is equated with certain communities and they see it as a way to be helping vulnerable populations find their place in Canada. Our sense of pride is what should motivate us to fulfill those duties and responsibilities, such as voting or promoting diversity, or especially advocating for Truth and Reconciliation, because our patriotism isn’t meaningful unless it is directed in a relevant and worthwhile manner. Our misplaced pride should not have to be tolerated by those who suffered at the hands of our government and society at the time of residential schools and many other tragic instances that the Indigenous experienced because of our country. Celebrating Canada Day is controversial and protested event for a reason, and as Canadians, we have to be self-aware of our personal responsibility regarding our patriotism. inaugurated. The Governor General at the time, Viscount Willingdon, lays the cornerstone of the Confederation Building on Wellington Street. From 1958 to 1968: The government organizes celebrations for Canada’s national holiday every year. The Secretary of State of Canada is responsible for coordinating these activities. A typical format includes a flag ceremony in the afternoon on the lawns of Parliament Hill and a sunset ceremony in the evenings, followed by a concert of military music and fireworks. July 1, 1967: The 100th anniversary of Confederation. Parliament Hill is the backdrop for a high-profile ceremony, which includes the participation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. From 1968 to 1979: (with the exception of 1976): A large multicultural celebration is presented on Parliament Hill. This concert is broadcast on television across the country. The main celebrations (called “Festival Canada”) are held in the National Capital Region throughout the month of July. These celebrations include many cultural, artistic and sport activities and involve the participation of various municipalities and volunteer associations. From 1980 to 1983: A new format is devel-
oped. In addition to the festivities on Parliament Hill, the national committee (the group tasked by the federal government to plan the festivities for Canada’s national holiday) starts to encourage and financially support the establishment of local celebrations across Canada. Start-up funding is provided to support popular activities and performances organized by volunteer groups in hundreds of communities. Interested organizations can make a request to the Celebrate Canada program. 1981: Fireworks light up the sky in 15 major Canadian cities, a tradition that continues today. 1984: The National Capital Commission (NCC) is given the mandate to organize Canada Day festivities in the capital. 2010: Festivities on Parliament Hill receive a royal treatment when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh join the festivities to celebrate Canada’s 143rd anniversary. 2011: Their Royal Highnesses Prince William and Catherine, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, participate in Canada Day festivities on Parliament Hill on the occasion of Canada’s 144th anniversary. 2014: Canadian Heritage organizes the 147th Canada Day celebrations. As we approach Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017, the government has given the Department the mandate to organize Canada Day festivities in the capital.
ohn Horgan has served as the Premier of British Columbia since 2017. British Columbia’s Premier John Horgan announced on Tuesday afternoon, June 28 that he would be stepping down from his position and will not be seeking re-election in his riding of Langford-Juan de Fuca. Horgan, 62, has been fighting cancer since the discovery of a lump on his throat in October of 2021. In his announcement on Tuesday, he shared that while he was now cancer free, he may no longer have the energy to lead the provincial NDP past the next election. “As we reach the midpoint of our second term, it’s clear the tasks ahead of our province are enormous and will require a leader focused on the next two years and
beyond,” Horgan’s statement reads. “I am proudly cancer free. I have a lot of energy, but I must acknowledge that this may not be the case two years from now. Therefore I have decided not to run again in the next election.” Horgan said that he plans to stay on as Premier until a new leader of the provincial NDP has been chosen. “Being premier is never a job I expected to have, but it has been the honour of my life,” the statement goes on to read. Horgan was first elected as the MLA from Langford-Juan de Fuca in 2005. In 2014 he was elected leader of the B.C NDP. In 2017, three years after being elected leader, he defeated incumbent Liberal premier Christy Clark to form a coalition government with
the Green Party. In 2020 his party was re-elected with a large majority of 57 seats in the legislature, the largest win the British Columbia NDP was ever able to secure in a provincial election. During his time as premier, Horgan led the province through the COVID-19 pandemic, he battled with Alberta over delays surrounding the Trans Mountain pipeline project, and was later criticized for refusing to meet with the Wet’suwet’en Indigenous chiefs who protested that pipeline travelling through their ancestral lands in B.C. The federal NDP released a statement thanking premier Horgan for his leadership. “John has shown the difference an NDP government can make for people. Afford-

NDP: Women’s rights must be protected and advanced in Canada
The Leader of Canada’s NDP, Jagmeet Singh, made the following statement: “Today, the United States Supreme Court walked back women’s rights by making abortion effectively illegal in half the country. Women in the United States are devastated by this ruling and by what it will mean for their right to make decisions about their own bodies. You cannot make abortion illegal; you can only make safe abortion illegal. Women will die as a result of this devastating decision. These dangerous policies that threaten women’s health and women’s lives must not be allowed to take root in Canada. There is so much more the government can do to ensure better access to health care services for women living in rural and remote communities. The Liberals say the right things about being pro-choice but that isn’t enough. Women in many parts of the country, particularly
in rural communities, have to drive hundreds of miles to access the care they need. This is wrong. It has never been more important for the Liberals to make the much-needed and longoverdue investments in women’s health care services. New Democrats have been calling on the Liberal government to expand abortion services across the country. Now, with so many women in the United States having their rights denied, it is possible that more of them will start coming to Canada for these procedures. It’s crucial that the government invests in women’s health care and expands access to ensure Canadians can get the help they need, when they need it. We have also called on the government to take urgent action to ensure contraceptives are available for free. Removing barriers for people to get contraceptives is an immediate action the government can take to make it easier for women to take care of themselves. Canadian women reading this news today are understandably concerned and angry that this could happen in 2022. It has taken decades of advocacy for women to earn their hard-fought rights – nothing must threaten that. To all the women reading this news today, New Democrats will always stand with you. We will fight to ensure your rights are not just upheld but expanded in Canada.” Source::NDP Media Centre
Canadian parliament insults Pakistan’s Army Chief: Country’s honor tarnished Visit of Pakistan’s Army General Qamar Javed Bajwa to Canada came under heated discussion in the Canadian Parliament on Monday. Parliamentary Secretary of Canadian Defense Ministry Bryan May says allocation of the $50,000 for the reception of Pakistan’s Army Chief Qamar Javed Bajwa was ‘inappropriate’. His comments came in response to a fiery speech of the Canadian parliamentarian Tom Kmiec who slammed his government for approving the amount for COAS Bajwa’s reception from the taxpayer money of Canada. COAS Bajwa was expected to visit Canada back in 2020. The official visit was later canceled due to COVID-19. The parliamentarian in his speech recalled how the Assistant Deputy Defense Minister called the allocation of the amount ‘appropriate’ for the visit of COAS Qamar Bajwa.
Almost 100,000 mail ballots not counted in federal election: Elections Canada
Ballots arrived too late, were not filled in properly or lacked a signature Almost 100,000 mail-in ballots were not counted in the federal election, most because they arrived after the deadline, a report by Elections Canada has revealed. The body that administers Canada’s elections says 99,988 special ballots were “set aside” and not counted, including because they arrived too late, were not filled in properly or lacked a signature. Canadian expats living overseas, people working away from home in Canada and members of the Armed Forces were among those whose special ballots were not counted. A record number of people asked for special mailable ballots for the Sept. 21 election. But most Canadians voted in person at a polling station, although COVID-19 restrictions, including sanitizing and physical distancing, led to long delays at some. The Elections Canada analysis found an 82 per cent increase in the number of mail-in ballots in last year’s general election compared to the 2019 federal poll. The report said more than 1.1 million special ballots were received, including from incarcerated Canadians. During a federal election, local electors voting by special ballot must return it to Elections Canada by close of polls. International voters, those voting by mail from away from home, including Canadian Forces and prisoners, need to return their ballot to Elections Canada headquarters in Ottawa by 6 p.m. for it to count. Canada’s Chief Electoral Officer Stéphane
Suggested reforms to elections law
“The earlier electors cast their special ballot, the more likely it is that it will be received before the deadline,” his report to MPs said. “It’s important to note that this is the first time that Elections Canada has published special ballot voting data to this degree of detail,” said Matthew McKenna, a spokesman for Elections Canada. “The Chief Electoral Officer has also already made recommendations to Parliament on how to amend the Canada Elections Act in ways that would improve the special ballot process.” Perrault suggested that people voting by mail-in ballot be able to name a political party rather than a candidate, as is the case in provincial elections in Saskatchewan and British Columbia, to make the process quicker. Elections Canada put in place some measures to make it easier to vote by special ballot before the election, including allowing people to drop off the envelope containing their ballot at polling stations in their district. Quoting police figures, he said around 2,700 incidents “motivated by hate” were reported in Canada in 2020 — the highest number of such incidents since 2009. Last week, Pakistan had objected to the Canadian MP’s remarks and took up the matter with the government of Canada, Radio Pakistan had reported, quoting Foreign Office spokesperson Asim Iftikhar Ahmed. “The statement [given by Kmiec] is baseless and unsubstantiated,” the state-run radio service quoted Ahmed as saying in response to a question during a press briefing on June 24.Source: dawn.com

At least 101 people were killed in the country’s northeast when rivers swelled to record levels and inundated rural villages, after some of the heaviest rains in a century. “The scale of devastation this time is so much more” than earlier floods, said Sanjeev Kafley of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The earthquake in southeast Afghanistan left the locals homeless and caused at least 1150 deaths, more than 1,500 injuries, and the destruction of more than 10,000 homes, Khaama Press reported, citing the Taliban officials. Afghanistan has encountered its deadliest earthquake in 20 years and is in
dire need of humanitarian relief. UNICEF has set up child-friendly spaces, where children are benefiting from psychosocial first aid services, with over 100 caregivers in presence. UN’s assistance comes as several organisations from all over the world have been supporting the people badly affected by the earthquake by providing large sums of money. The United Nations has allocated USD 10 million from the UN Central Emergency Response Funds (UNCERF) on Sunday to support the people of Afghanistan affected by the earthquake that struck this week in the eastern part of the country. On Wednesday, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake jolted parts of Afghanistan including the capital city Kabul. At present, over 1000 people are estimated to have been killed across

they should do.“We didn’t know whether we will get tickets, or they’re going to send us away,” said Godwin Beaumont, who wished managers told those in line how many tickets would be handed out per day, so people could decide if it was worth waiting. Sobhani had heard that number was 60. “But this is information you find in the line. Nobody is communicating this information anywhere,” he said. Because the wait time for mailed-in passport applications is now eight weeks, British Columbians with summer travel have no choice but to line up at Service Canada in person.Source: bc.ctvnews.ca
After a long and cold spring, a recent heatwave on Vancouver Island seemed to be welcomed by many, and fortunately it appears to have been less dangerous than last year’s fatal heat dome. Health risks and temperatures this weekend were lower than when the heat dome peaked last year, bringing temperatures to near 40 degrees on Vancouver Island on June 27 and 28, 2021. According to Environment Canada, temperatures reached highs near 30 C over the weekend in Victo-
ria. On Saturday, the highest temperature in Victoria was 29.2 C, on Sunday temperatures reached 30.8 C, and on Monday temperatures hit a high of 29.5 C, according to the weather organization. Island Health tells CTV News that one person was brought to an island emergency room for heat-related reasons over the weekend, while the BC Coroners Service says no deaths related to heat were confirmed as of Monday. It’s a far cry from the 55 people who died of heat-related reasons on Vancouver Island
during the heat dome last year. Across the province, 619 people are believed to have died due to heat-related illnesses in late June and early July 2021, according to the BC Coroners Service. June 24, 2022—Ottawa, Ontario – The Government of Canada continues to work hard to resettle at least 40,000 Afghan nationals as quickly and safely as possible. Since August 2021, Canada has welcomed a total of 16,270 Afghan refugees, including over 3,800 school-aged children. As we mark the end of the school year, we are proud that children of recent Afghan newcomers have access to a safe school environment where they can learn and successfully integrate into their new communities. This
includes many young women and girls who might not have had the opportunity to go to school in Afghanistan. Since August 2021, schools across Canada have been welcoming and supporting Afghan children in more than 90 communities. The Saskatchewan Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) Program has helped implement special academic, physical education and skills programs to help children successfully integrate into their classrooms. In Saskatoon, as part of the SWIS Refugee Language Program, Afghan children were given extra support to improve their English language skills, all while learning about Canadian culture and geography. Through the support of the settlement workers at the Surrey Schools Welcome Centre in British Columbia, the Surrey School District alone has welcomed over 550 Afghan children. The workers created welcoming
and inclusive spaces for children by providing school supplies, access to breakfast and lunch programs, and school transportation. Dari- and Pashto-speaking settlement workers also delivered cultural awareness training sessions to educators and support staff. In St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, the Association for New Canadians SWIS Program provides in-person programming and activities for newcomer children in all grades. Students are offered access to online learning, tablets and English as a second language resources, while they await permanent accommodations. These children also benefit from mentorship programs and after-school homework clubs to improve their English and social skills in a safe and supportive environment. Thanks to these schools and programs, newcomer children have the support they need to learn, play and succeed in their new school

School programs help Afghan children thrive in Canada community. – The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship “Working with Afghan refugees has been a job that has been very fulfilling and rewarding as a SWIS worker. Schools have put in extra effort to make sure the students have what they need to learn, play and participate, just like their classmates. It has been challenging and time-consuming as SWIS works through a multitude of barriers, such as language, cultural differences, mental health struggles, transportation, finances, programming, winter clothing, electronics for learning and so on. Overall, the families and schools have been extremely appreciative of the work I do as their SWIS worker, and I could not do it without the support of our interpreters.” Source:Aidan Strickland, Press Secretary Minister’s Office Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada

HEAT WAVE.HEALTH
URREY – Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued special weather statements for several parts of the province. The special weather statements include the Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley, beginning Friday, June 24, and lasting into next week. This is not a heat warning or an extreme heat emergency, but we will experience the first high temperatures of the summer. The warmer weather will also cause rapid snow melt, leading to high rivers and streams throughout the province so please keep water safety in mind this weekend. The first high temperatures of the season can lead to some people overheating because they are not yet acclimatized to warmer weather. There are some basic steps you can take to ensure you and your family remain safe and healthy during warmer temperatures. For information and resources to help you stay safe and healthy in the heat, visit fraserhealth.ca/heatsafety. The BC Centre of Disease Control (BCCDC) also has a broad range of heat-related information on its website, including information on the different types of heat alerts, how to prepare for warmer temperatures, symptoms of heat-related illnesses, those most at risk during warmer weather, and ways to stay cool.

Identify a cooler space in your home and prepare it so you can stay there at night, if possible. You may need to change daily living arrangements. Find an air-conditioned spot close by where you can cool off on very hot days. Consider staying with friends or family or find places in your community to spend time such as movie theatres, libraries, community centres, or shopping malls. Check that you have a working fan. If you have an air conditioner, make sure it works. Install awnings, shutters, blinds, or curtains over your windows to keep the sun out during the day. Practice opening doors and windows to move cool air in at night and shutting windows during the day to prevent hot outdoor air from coming inside. Who is most at risk?
It is important to monitor yourself and family members, and to consider developing a check-in system for neighbours and friends who are at higher-risk during warmer weather
The most susceptible individuals include: • • •
Older adults, especially those over 60 people who live alone people with pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or
respiratory disease people with mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, depression, or anxiety • people with substance use disorders • people with limited mobility • people who are marginally housed • people who work in hot environments • people who are pregnant infants and young children •
Your health:
Spray your body down with water, wear a damp shirt, take a cool shower or bath, or sit with part of your body in water to cool down if you are feeling too hot. Drink plenty of water and other liquids to stay hydrated, even if you are not feeling thirsty Take it easy, especially during the hottest hours of the day. Stay in the shade or use a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or more. Signs of overheating include feeling unwell, headache, and dizziness. Take immediate action to cool down if you are overheating. It is important to remember that overheating can lead to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Signs of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, severe headache, muscle cramps, extreme thirst, and dark urine. If you are experiencing these symptoms, you should seek a cooler environment, drink plenty of water, rest, and use water to cool your body.
Heat stroke is a medical emergency In the event of a medical emergency, British Columbians are advised to call 9-1-1. However, it is also important to use 9-1-1 responsibly to avoid overwhelming the system. Ahead of the busy summer months, BC Emergency Health Services in partnership with ECOMM, is reminding British Columbians to only dial 9-1-1 for serious or life-threatening injuries
When to call 9-1-1:
In general: when there is chest pain, difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness, severe burns, choking, convulsions that are not stopping, a drowning, a severe allergic reaction, a head injury, signs of a stroke, a major trauma. More specifically related to hot weather: severe headache, confusion, unsteadiness, loss of thirst, nausea/vomiting, and dark urine or no urine are signs of dangerous heat-related illness.
If you have a less urgent health issue:
You can call 8-1-1 and get connected with a nurse at HealthLinkBC. Or, if you can do it safely, you could go to an urgent care centre or clinic. That way, our highly trained emergency medical dispatch staff and paramedics will be available for people who need their services the most. There are also online tools at healthlinkbc. ca including a “Check Your Symptoms” tool. While this bulletin is about the beginning of hot summer weather, additional information on preparing for extreme heat events can also be found in BC’s Extreme Heat Preparedness Guid Source:Fraser Health Media

The first recorded Islamic presence in Canada was the 1871 census which found 13 Muslims among the population. The first Canadian Mosque was constructed in Edmonton in 1938 when there were only about 700 Muslims in the country. Technological Change
Already underway in the late 1990s, the information revolution of the early 21st century brought enormous change to the lives of Canadians, with personal computers, mobile phones, and the internet going from high-tech novelties to necessities of life in just a few short years. Just as the dawn of the 20th century introduced new types of work through the growth of factories and machines, so too is the 21st creating new jobs in previously unknown fields like computer programming, website management, and online commerce. Today, close to 90 per cent of Canadian homes are connected to the internet, and Canadians increasingly communicate with one another through digital technologies like texting and instant messaging, as well as social media websites like Facebook and

On September 11, 2001, fundamentalist Islamic terrorists from the Middle East destroyed the World Trade Center towers in New York City, killing 2,983 people, including 26 Canadians. In response, Canada quickly joined what was dubbed the War on Terror, led by the United States, to take offensive action against the Islamist terror group Al-Qaeda — who had perpetrated the attack — and the fundamentalist Taliban government of Afghanistan that had sheltered and supported them. Though the Taliban government was quickly toppled, Canadian troops would stay in Afghanistan for nearly 10 years — the longest war in Canadian history — fighting stubborn pockets of Taliban and Al-Qaeda loyalists, helping train soldiers and police officers serving the

By 2014, however, a new terrorist group known as ISIS or the Islamic State — had seized control of portions of Iraq and Syria, prompting many western nations to pursue renewed military action. In 2014, Prime Minister Stephen Harper (b. 1959) ordered Canadian airstrikes against ISIS targets in Iraq and Syria, but in 2016, following an election, these were cancelled by new prime minister Justin Trudeau (b. 1971), who insisted the Canadian military should instead focus on training and helping Cont.at Page 21 anti-ISIS forces on the ground...

when Imran Khan appeared wearing a casual track suit outfit directly after attending a press conference that was held in another part of the building. Before his arrival to the meeting, I overheard Asad Umar, Shabaz Gill and Shahar Yar Afridi discussing Mr. Khan's mood. Khan was angry due to the passing of NAB amendment bill by the Parliament. Amendments in the NAB bill now give a free hand to all the likes of Nawaz Sharif, Asif Zardari, Shabaz Sharif and many others accused of corruption and money laundering. And sure enough, Khan walked in with a serious and furious look on his face. After a short ceremony of recitation of the Holy Quran and some presentation of his portraits and a presentation of the key of a big Caravan vehicle for PTI’s election campaign by Flight Lieutenant Anwar and my book ‘The Last Salute,’ Khan came on the podium and after speaking for about 10 to 12 minutes, he left by thanking and without taking any questions. Words during his speech were similar to the words we have heard many times before. He spoke about corruption of the crooks who were installed at the helm of affairs running the present government. He also spoke about the army in a positive manner and was very clear
that a strong Pakistan cannot exist without the presence of a strong army. Khan simply sat on a chair at a handshaking distance opposite to us as we were occupying the front seats. It gave me a chance to have a deeper look at his body language as I was seated at a close distance from him. To me Khan appeared annoyed like a wounded tiger, but confident and determined to fight till the end. It is a popular belief amongst the public and the politicians that no government can come to the power or can be thrown out of office without the blessings of the Pakistan army. If it is considered true then it would be a valid argument to state that why would they let him come back to power if the army was involved in ousting him from the office? It might appear wishful to some, but it is also not a bad counter argument to the above argument that the army wanted to get all the harmful job of fulfilling the IMF conditions done by the present government. Once the IMF funds are released then the army would ensure a call for an early and fair election that would most probably bring Khan back to the power and would also help in restoring the fast diminishing image of the army.
BC’s First Halal Food Festival held at Civic Plaza outdoor community hub with many fun activities for kids, the event was a success. It was a Free Entry event and open to all communities to visit at the Surrey Civic Plaza outdoor community hub. Vendors represented a diverse range of communities including Pakistani, Indone-
sian, Lebanese, Palestenian, Syrian, Indian, and Central Asian communities along with mainstream halal favorities like pizza, burgers and tacos. Everyone served delicious and fresh food at their stalls and people were excited to try it as observed with the long
queues in front of all stalls. Food lovers were willing to wait over half an hour with their friends and families to try different treats. The event was well-received and people hope to have it return next year at a bigger venue.

n the spring of 2020, Canadian society was massively disrupted by an invisible enemy — a new and deadly respiratory coronavirus known as COVID-19. By June, the virus — which caused intense flulike symptoms to its victims — had killed over half a million people across the globe. Because Covid was highly contagious, governments around the world — including Canada’s — began imposing progressively stricter rules on their citizens in order to ensure they would not spread the disease. Such measures included mandatory mask-wearing in public places, closures of “non-essential” businesses, and social distancing regulations that discouraged people from unnecessary travel, crowding, or socializing. Though most Ca-
Spiritual Preparation For Hajj shouts to make way. (Jami’ al-Tirmidhi) Glad Tidings In Raising Voice? Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “A pilgrim never raises his voice answering the call to Allah but that he is given glad tidings, and a pilgrim never raises his voice in exalting Allah but that he is given glad tidings.” It was said, “O Messenger of Allah, of Paradise?” The Prophet said, “Yes.” (Mu’jam alKabir of al-Tabarani) The Most Important Day in the Life of a Muslim
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The promised day is the Day of Resurrection, the witnessed day is the day of Arafat, and the witnessing day is Friday (85:2-3). The sun does not rise or set over a day better than it. In it is a moment in which a believing servant does not supplicate to Allah for good but that Allah will answer him, and he does not seek refuge from any evil thing but that Allah will grant him refuge.” (Jami’ al-Tirmidhi) Be a Guest of Allah
Canada in the 21st Century nadians complied, the social and economic costs were tremendous, with the Canadian economy suffering its greatest blow since the Great Depression (1929-1939). Many Canadians were forced to endure long periods of unemployment after businesses like restaurants, retail stores, hotels, gyms, and beauty parlors had no choice but to close their doors as customers stayed away. Canada’s first COVID death came in March, and by January of 2021 over 20,000 Canadians had died. January of 2021 also saw a number of effective COVID vaccines begin to debut, however, which brings hope that the virus may be quashed by 2022 — and with it, the disruptive rules that have been used to fight it. New Political Debates The early 2000s saw Canada’s political situation stabilize a fair bit after two decades of turmoil. Many movements that seemed intense in the ’80s or ’90s simply fizzled out, partially due to an improved economic situation that made some of the old fights
— particularly those involving Quebec and the constitution — seem less important, and partially due to the rise of a few skilled and pragmatic political leaders. No shortage of new issues have arisen to take the place of the old ones, however. Concerns relating to the intersection of diversity and racism have risen to the forefront of Canadian society as the country’s population grows more diverse. Immigration has been steadily increasing in recent decades, with the bulk of Canada’s human inflow now coming from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. New tensions born from unfamiliar religions and cultural practices, as well as fears of new forms of bigotry, present challenges
Abdullah ibn Damrah reported: Ka’b, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “The pilgrims of Hajj and Umrah and soldiers in the way of Allah are the guests of Allah. If they ask, give them. If they call you, answer them.” (Musannaf ibn Abi Shaybah) Email: asmashums@gmail.com for the traditional Canadian ideal of a peaceful, multicultural society. The issue of Indigenous rights has grown dramatically as a topic of attention as well, and the 2020s have seen renewed effort to raise awareness of the historic racism of Canadian society as a way to bring justice to all Canadians of colour. Economic inequality remains another acute tension, with many Canadians feeling technological change, globalization, and other large economic forces have made decentpaying, long-term jobs harder to find, with a widening gap between the financially secure and the financially struggling becoming a more pronounced aspect of Canadian society. The effects of man-made climate change represent the dominant environmental worry, with issues relating to pollution and sustainable living now leading topics of Canadian political debate. To what extent can Canada, whose traditional industries have been based around natural resource extraction, achieve a workable balance between defending nature and protecting economic interests?
