All you need to know about the Ask the Imam (Q&A) Islamic Hijri New Year Accepting a copy of the Bible so that a kaafir will agree to accept a copy of the Qur’aan
E
very year, Muslims around the world celebrate the beginning of the New Islamic Year, which commemorates the occasion of Hijrah, or the Prophet Mohammad and his followers’ migration from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD. The Islamic calendar differs from the widely used Gregorian calendar as Muslims follow the lunar calendar consisting of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days, meaning that Muslims every year mark major calendar dates like Ramadan and Eid earlier each year. It was during the era of Muslim leader Omar ibn al-Khattab when the Hijri calendar was established. It was narrated that al-Khattab had consulted the companions of the prophet on choosing from three events to mark the beginning of the Islamic calendar. The options were the day and year of Prophet Mohammad’s birth, death or Hijra (migration) to Medina. The companions agreed on using the date of the Prophet’s Hijra. The agreement on this
matter was reached in the year 17 of the Hijra, the fourth year of the Omar ibn alKhattab’s caliphate which corresponds to year 622 on the Julian calendar. The Hijra to Medina was a turning point in Islamic history, marking the beginning of the Muslim state, and where the Prophet established the first civil Muslim society. At first, there were discussions on whether the first month of the year should be Ramadan, the Muslim fasting month, or Muharram. Muharram was then announced as the first month of the Islamic Hijri calendar given that it comes after Muslims conclude the annual pilgrimage season to Mecca for Hajj during the month of Dhul Hijjah. The exact date when the new Islamic Hijri New Year begins is calculated by different techniques, including via astronomical calculations, or via an official moon-sighting exercise similarly used during the sighting of the Ramadan crescent and Eid moons to determine those Islamic months. Muharram: Everything You Need to Know about The Sacred Month and its Benefits By: Muslim Hands
M
When is Muharram?
uharram, also known as Muharram-ulHaram, is the first month of the Hijri calendar and thus marks the beginning of the Islamic year. It is the only month which Allah’s name has been attached to - the Prophet Muhammad (saw) referred to it as ‘the Sacred Month of Allah’ - and is thus a highly blessed month. It is one of the four sacred months, and its special importance is indicated by its name. The word ‘Muharram’ literally means ‘forbidden’ - i.e. it is so sacred that certain actions become forbidden during it, as they would violate its sanctity. Both the month of the Muharram and Allah’s House (Al-Masjid Al-Haram) derive their names from the same Arabic root word; both are sacred spaces in which every deed, good or bad, weighs heavier on the scales.
Why is Muharram so special?
’Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them…’ (Qur’an, 9:36) Regarding this verse, Ibn Katheer (rh) explains, ’Allah has chosen elites from His creation: from among the angels He chose Messengers, from among mankind He chose Messengers, from among speech He chose remembrance of Him (dhikr),
from among spaces on earth He chose the mosques, from among the months He chose Ramadan and the sacred months… So, venerate that which has been chosen by Allah, for people of understanding and wisdom respect that which has been chosen by Him’. (Tafseer Ibn Katheer) Therefore, Muharram is special simply because Allah has chosen it to be so. He commands us not to ‘wrong ourselves’ during this sacred month, which essentially means to ensure we have pure intentions and righteous behaviour and don’t fall into sin.
What are the four sacred months?
Allah has also chosen Rajab, Dhul-Qa’dah and Dhul-Hijjah as sacred months.Historically, one of the practical consequences of Dhul-Qa’dah, Dhul-Hijjah and Muharram being sacred was that pilgrims would be allowed to perform Hajj safely without worrying about banditry or war. Fighting was forbidden during Dhul-Qa’dah, when they would be travelling to make the Hajj; Dhul-Hijjah, when they would be performing Hajj in Makkah and its surroundings; and Muharram, when they would be returning home from Hajj. This standard was
Question 94192: A Muslim man says: I wanted to give a copy of a translation of the meanings of the Quraan to a kaafir man, but he said I will not take it unless you take from me a copy of the Bible in Arabic, and I will not read it unless you read [the Bible]. Should I do that or not?
Praise be to Allah.
We put this question to Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-Uthaymeen, may Allaah preserve him, who replied as follows: He should not do that, because the Bible may have an effect on the Muslim, but it seems that the Quraan will not have upheld by the Arabs in pre-Islamic times, and Allah confirms it in the Qur’an. Rajab, meanwhile, is the seventh month of the Hijri calendar and stands alone as a sacred month. Historically, this was to allow people to perform ’Umrah in Rajab if they wanted to.
What are the benefits of Muharram?
Although many of us understand the importance of the month of Ramadan, we can often neglect the sacred months. However, they offer us a wealth of opportunities to seek the mercy and favour of Allah, the likes of which cannot be found at any other time of the year. They have been specifically selected by Allah Himself as the best times to draw closer to Him. As mentioned before, our deeds carry more weight during Muharram, just as they carry more weight in the Ka’bah and its surroundings. Thus, there is an opportunity to gain more reward every day; but also the danger of gaining more sins with our bad deeds. This means we should be extra-vigilant when it comes to how we act, whether in our relationships, at work, in our worship, in our time management, or even how we take care of our health. With the right intention, every single action can become an opportunity for
an effect on this evil person, because he is insisting that the Muslim should take the copy of the Bible. So he should not agree to that. If he goes right, then it will be for the benefit of his own self, and if he goes astray, it will be to his own loss.
Question:
Should he pretend to agree to read [the Bible], without really meaning it? Answer: He should not agree to anything, because that will make this person feel proud. And Allaah knows best. (Source: IslamQA) reward! We’ve put together a quick list of easy ways to take advantage of the benefits of Muharram:
Say salaam more! This is the greeting of the Prophet (saw) and the people of Paradise, and such a simple action can reap countless rewards and forgiveness. Smile at everyone (even on Monday mornings). This simple action will weigh heavy on the scales during Muharram. Give regular Sadaqah. Muharram is the
beginning of the Islamic New Year, so it’s the perfect time to make resolutions and establish good habits that you can reap the rewards of all-year round. Improve your health by eating better, exercising more and having a good sleeping routine. Yes, taking care of your health is a rewardable action too - your body is an amanah (trust) from Allah! Making a few lifestyle changes can earn you countless rewards. Seek forgiveness. Since sins are heavier in Muharram, you should ask for forgiveness as often as possible during this month, or even erase all your sins by lighting the Dome of the Rock, which is equivalent to praying in the blessed Masjid al-Aqsa! Commemorative ‘Guru Nanak Village Way’ street sign unveiled in Cloverdale
Surrey City Council celebrated the unveiling of a commemorative ‘Guru Nanak Village Way’ street sign in Cloverdale on July 22. The sign has been installed on the corner of 64 Avenue and 175A Street following City Council approving a request from Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS) Society earlier this year. “I am very pleased to celebrate the installation of the commemorative ‘Guru Nanak Village Way’ sign in Cloverdale,” said Mayor Doug McCallum. “This street will provide access to the Guru Nanak Diversity Village, a longterm care facility being built by Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS) Society. With more than 100,000 Sikhs living in the City of Surrey, naming this street after Guru Nanak Dev Ji will not only reflect our city’s multicultural mosaic, but also the
rich Punjabi heritage. It is a celebration of our diverse cultures, communities and their contributions towards making Surrey a truly inclusive city. I can think of no better way to express the City’s commitment to inclusion than to name this street in honour of Guru Nanak whose teachings championed the oneness of humanity and united people across religious divisions.” The idea to rename 175A Street after the founder of the Sikh faith originated when PICS decided to name the proposed longterm care home for seniors “Guru Nanak Diversity Village.” On June 27th, Council approved PICS’ request that the 6400 block of 175A Street, which will provide access to the forthcoming Guru Nanak Diversity Village long-term care facility, receive a secondary street name in the form of the com-
memorative name Guru Nanak Village Way, in both English and Punjabi. The street naming supporting the City’s Sustainability Charter 2.0, particularly as it relates to the Charter’s theme of inclusion. “On behalf of PICS Society, our Board and the larger community we represent, I want to express sincere thanks to Mayor McCallum and Surrey City Council for their leadership on this initiative,” said Satbir Singh Cheema, President & CEO of PICS Society. “We are also thankful to them for demonstrating their solidarity and support, not just for the multicultural long-term care facility, but to-
wards the South-Asian community and their contributions across Canada, especially in Surrey.” ‘Guru Nanak Village Way’ sign has been installed on the corner of 64th Avenue and 175A Street which will provide access to Progressive Intercultural Community Services’ Guru Nanak Diversity Village. Questioning Supreme Justice
ow dreadful it is when the right judge, judges wrong.” — Sophocles A JUDICIAL boycott by the major political parties forming the government of a Supreme Court bench, headed by the chief justice of Pakistan, hearing a case of national importance, is an extraordinary judicial event by any historical standard. The last time such a thing happened on a much smaller scale was when, in 2002, the Supreme Court Bar Association withdrew a review petition from the Supreme Court of Pakistan, on the explicit ground that the judiciary had ceased to be independent. The issue is not whether the ruling of the deputy Speaker of the Punjab Assembly was legally correct or not but something much more fundamental: major political parties have lost faith in the judicial process which produces these decisions. Is this judicial crisis merely a result of sore losers or something else? Unusual short order: The Supreme Court through a short order dated July 26, 2022, declared the ruling of the deputy Speaker of the Punjab Assembly as erroneous and Chaudhry Parvez Elahi as the duly elected chief minister of Punjab. But this is an unusual short order, because unlike usual short orders, which hardly contain reasons, this one also contains partial reasons. The primary reason given is that the understanding and implementation of the Supreme Court short order dated May 17, 2022, on the presidential reference concerning Article 63-A of the Constitution, as well as of this particular Article itself, by the deputy Speaker was incorrect and erroneous. In other words, this case was
News Cont from Pg 1
viewed as a simple and uncomplicated issue of “misunderstanding and implementation”, instead of a case involving complicated constitutional questions. But the main thrust of the short order is to justify why the finding that the “decision of the party as to how to vote has been conferred upon the party head”, given by Justice Azmat Saeed, on behalf of the majority member judgement of the Supreme Court in the ‘District Bar Association case’ (PLD 2015 SC 401), was not binding on this smaller bench of three members. This issue was at the heart of the controversy: if the parliamentary party could legally issue directions regarding a vote of confidence motion, Parvez Elahi won, but if the party head, Chaudhry Shujaat, could only issue such directions, Hamza Shehbaz won. In the presence of this explicit finding by a larger Supreme Court bench in favour of the party head, the short order declares that this larger Supreme Court judgement is not binding on it for the following reasons. Firstly, this finding was supported allegedly only by eight judges out of a full court of 17 judges and for a judgement to be binding precedent, it should have the support of nine judges out of 17 judges. This was not a simple issue of mere ‘understanding and implementation’ but rather a complicated case of constitutional interpretation. Secondly, these findings conferring the power to issue directions on the party head are in conflict with the express provisions of Article 63-A, which states that the parliamentary party will issue such directions. In short, these findings by Justice Azmat Saeed are unconstitutional.
Thirdly, these are not really findings but are merely ‘passing remarks’ because this case only involved the question as to the unconstitutionality of Article 63-A and not as to who will issue such directions under Article 63-A. Lastly, the current chief justice, Umar Bandial, who had also signed and supported the lead majority judgement of Justice Azmat Saeed, in 2015, did not give any finding on Article 63-A. In short, Justice Umar Bandial did not support these findings of Justice Azmat Saeed on Article 63-A. Erroneous reasoning: The reasoning in the short order is erroneous, self-contradictory and itself provides grounds that only a larger bench of the Supreme Court should have heard this case. Firstly, the very fact that three and half pages have been written in the short order to justify why the majority judgement of Justice Azmat Saeed is not binding itself proves that this matter apparently involves complicated precedents and only a larger bench of at least nine Supreme Court judges could resolve this issue. Secondly, if the reasoning of Justice Azmat Saeed that under Article 63-A, the party head is to issue directions regarding voting in a confidence motion is in conflict with the express words of Article 63-A(1)(b) which uses the term ‘parliamentary party’ then by the same logic, the majority short order dated May 17, 2022, of these same three Supreme Court judges on the interpretation of Article 63-A is also in conflict with the Constitution because the condition of not counting the votes has been read into Article 63-A, which is just not present in the constitutional text. In other words, inconsistent ap-
proaches to constitutional interpretation have been adopted. Thirdly, in para 1 of the judgement of Justice Umar Bandial in the case of the ‘District Bar Association case’, Justice Bandial has fully supported all the findings of Justice Azmat Saeed, in the following categorical terms that “with respect, I agree with the appreciation of relevant facts and the grounds and reasons sustaining the findings given on all the points addressed in the aforementioned opinion” (ie ‘all’ means all). Surely, if a judge now wants to take a different legal interpretation, this itself shows the complicated nature of this constitutional case. In short, this case should not have been heard by a smaller three bench but rather by a larger bench of at least nine of the senior-most Supreme Court members as this was not a simple issue of mere “understanding and implementation” but rather a complicated case of constitutional interpretation, involving allegedly erroneous binding precedents and a case which will have far-reaching constitutional and political implications. It is irrelevant whether the conclusions reached through the short order are correct or not. A losing party will only accept a judicial decision against them if it is perceived to be the result of a fair, just and legally correct process. Sadly, the root cause of this judicial crisis lies in the erroneous judicial choice where the quick conclusion of this case was preferred over the fairness of the judicial process. One man was found dead by the Langley city bus loop at Logan Avenue and Glover Road. Another man was discovered dead at the nearby Creek Stone Place supportive housing project. Police also found a woman who’d been shot and critically injured near 203A Street and Fraser Highway. By 5:45 a.m., police had identified a suspect and found him outside Willowbrook
Mall near 200 Street and the Langley Bypass. A fourth victim, who survived a gunshot wound to the leg, was also in the area. Police shot and killed the suspect after an “interaction,” but did not say at what time.Just before 6:20 a.m., RCMP issued a blaring direct-to-cellphone emergency alert to the public with a description of a suspect and possible suspect vehicle— the second time in the past year the Alert Ready system has been used for an active shooter scenario in B.C. Police said the alert wasn’t sent earlier because investigators did not immediately realize the shootings were connected.“Our first respond-

The alert was done at the appropriate time as the information became known to us and a proper risk assessment was done,” said Sgt. Mr Elahi had to rush from Lahore to the federal capital after Punjab Governor Balighur Rehman refused to carry out the job. Earlier when the short order was pronounced by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial, Moonis Elahi, a son of the petitioner Parvez Elahi, was surrounded by PTI and PML-Q supporters and lawyers in courtroom No 1 to congratulate him. PTI senior leaders, including Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Asad Umar, Fawad Chaudhry, also accompanied for-
mer minister Moonis. The CJP-led three-judge bench, also comprising Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Munib Akhtar, announced the judgement in the absence of counsel for the respondent ruling coalition parties, who had during the proceedings earlier in the day informed the court that on the instructions of their clients, they were boycotting the hearing. Their clients intended to move a review petition against the court’s Monday decision of declining
their request for a full court to hear Mr Elahi’s petition against the rejection of 10 votes of PML-Q lawmakers polled in his favour during the CM’s election in the Punjab Assembly on July 22.Soon after the verdict was announced, a jubilant crowd carrying PTI flags present outside the Supreme Court on the Constitution Avenue as well as a number of supporters on the premises burst into cheers and sloganeering. Hockey Canada has paid out $7.6 million in sexual In NA address, PM Shehbaz accuses judiciary abuse settlements from dedicated fund since 1989 of having ‘double standards’ for different parties
CEO Scott Smith says he will not resign, despite calls for him to step down. Hockey Canada executives told a House of Commons committee Wednesday that nine complainants alleging sexual abuse have received $7.6 million in settlements since 1989 from a dedicated fund maintained in part by membership fees. Hockey Canada CEO Scott Smith told the standing committee on Canadian Heritage that he will not resign from his position. He told MPs he’s capable of creating change within the embattled or-
ganization. Hockey Canada chief financial officer Brian Cairo told the committee that of the $7.6 million, $6.8 million was for settlements related to Graham James, a former junior hockey coach convicted of sexually assaulting young hockey players. Cairo said the fund is generated by Hockey Canada membership fees and investments. Both Cairo and Smith defended the existence of the fund, saying it’s necessary because the organization’s insurance won’t cover all types of claims. Cairo cited the James case as an example.“The insurance companies were not going to insure us for those types of instances,” Cairo told the committee. But Cairo later said Hockey Canada settled an additional 12 sexual misconduct claims during the same time period with $1.3 million paid through insurance. “We haven’t used money to protect our image. We’ve used money to respond [to] and support victims … so we’ve used money to support families,” Smith said. Source: cbc.ca/news
Stephen Harper says Pierre Poilievre has the best chance to win the next federal election
The former prime minister has never endorsed a candidate during a leadership race Former prime minister Stephen Harper says Pierre Poilievre is the Conservative leadership candidate with the best shot at leading the party to victory in the next federal election. Harper’s declaration came in a Monday evening video posted to Facebook and Twitter, in which he described Poilievre’s ability to galvanize support from new members as a critical ingredient for success. “That’s how we win the next federal election, and in my opinion, Pierre has made by far the strongest case,” Harper said. Poilievre’s campaign claims to have signed up more than 300,000 members to vote in the leadership race. Harper also praised Poilievre, a longtime MP serving the Ottawa-area riding of Carleton, as a powerful communicator who has identified the most pressing issues facing Canada. “He’s been talking about the issues, especially the economic issues, that matter,” Harper said, listing Canada’s debt, inflation and housing troubles among the problems Poilievre is prepared to address.
Harper also said Poilievre recognizes “the need to fix the institutions that are failing Canadian families.” A central theme of Poilievre’s leadership campaign is a promise to wipe out “gatekeepers” that he says are standing in the way of economic growth and sensible governance. Poilievre also said during a leadership debate in May that he would fire Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem. He’s blamed the central bank and Liberal government for overseeing what he says is reckless monetary policy that has pushed inflation to levels not seen in decades... Source: ctvnews.ca/
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday accused the judiciary of having “double standards” with their treatment of different political parties. The prime minister’s criticism of the judiciary came a day after the Supreme Court struck down Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Dost Muhammad Mazari’s ruling and removed his son and fellow PML-N leader Hamza Shehbaz as the province’s chief minister. Addressing a session of the National Assembly (NA), Shehbaz said that while he respected the courts, he was also an elected representative and questioned “when the truth would be spoken, if not today.”“I ask that there was a time when a former chief justice took suo moto [notices] day and night ... when the courts summon then I think we should go with great respect ... but if you have to decide then it should be on the basis of truth and justice. It can’t happen that you treat me one way and treat someone else differently.” He reiterated that he greatly respected the judiciary and was only talking about “double stand-
ards”, adding that it was his right to do so as an elected representative of the people. The prime minister said that during the previous PTI government’s tenure “no one took notice” of various scandals such wheat and sugar crisis, the violation of its agreement with the International Monetary Fund as well as irregularities in the Peshawar BRT project.“Who planned to attack this parliament in 2014, who hung dirty clothes on the building of the Supreme Court, who asked the public to set fire to electricity bills ... no one took notice, everyone was quiet.” ..Source: dawn.com
Bangladesh seeking IMF loan but economy not in trouble: minister Bangladesh has asked to start talks on a loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) but will take it only if conditions are favourable, the finance minister said on Wednesday, adding its macroeconomic conditions were fine. The country’s $416 billion economy has been one of the fastest-growing in the world for years, but rising energy and food prices because of the Russia-Ukraine war have inflated its import bill and the current account deficit. “A letter was sent to the IMF seeking assistance, but we have not mentioned how much we want,” Minister A.H.M. Mustafa Kamal told reporters. “We are waiting to see their conditions. If the IMF conditions are in favour of the country and compatible with our development policy, we’ll go for it, otherwise not. Seeking a loan from the IMF does not mean Bangladesh’s economy is in bad shape.”A senior IMF official had told Reuters on Tuesday that Bangladesh had asked it to start talks on a new loan under the global creditor’s Resilience and Sustainability Trust. Such funds are capped at 150 per cent of a country’s quota or, in Bangladesh’s case, a maximum of $1 billion. Bangladesh’s Daily Star newspaper reported on Tuesday that the
country wanted $4.5bn from the IMF. Bangladesh’s economic mainstay is its export-oriented garments industry, which could suffer if sales fall in its main markets in Europe and the United States because of a slowdown in the global economy. After garments, remittances are the second highest source of foreign currency for Bangladesh. The South Asian country’s foreign exchange reserves fell to $39.67bn as of July 20 — sufficient for just over five months worth of imports — from $45.5bn a year earlier. Its July to May current account deficit was $17.2bn, compared with a deficit of $2.78bn in the year-earlier period, as its trade deficit widened and remittances fell. Sri Lanka and Pakistan are the other two South Asian countries to have sought IMF support this year...Source: dawn.com
Police fatally shoot RCMP officer after alleged attack 18 perish as rains continue to batter country on woman and teen in Monteregie, Que. An RCMP officer was killed by Quebec police Wednesday morning after he allegedly attacked a woman and teenager at his home in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, in Quebec’s Montérégie region. The incident is being investigated by Quebec’s bureau of investigations (BEI).According to the BEI, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu police (SJSR) received a 911 call at 2:05 a.m. Wednesday from a man saying he had just done something terrible. When police arrived at the home on Biat St., they found the man, who is an RCMP officer, armed with a knife. Officers opened fire and the 48-year-old was hit by at least one projectile. He was taken to hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Inside the home, police discovered a woman and a teenager, both with life-threatening injuries. They were transported to hospital in serious condition. “It was pretty dramatic. They’re a good family,” said Carmelo Perricone, a neighbour who woke up to the sound of gunshots. “They’re good people. In theory, we never would have suspected something dramatic like this to happen.”
He said he saw officers attempt to rescuscitate his neighbour after he was shot. The man was a Mountie with the RCMP’s financial integrity unit who investigated white-collar crime. Six BEI investigators were assigned to analyze the circumstances surrounding the incident including the conduct of the officers involved in the shooting. Quebec provincial police will investigate the injuries sustained by the woman and boy. The RCMP said it’s collaborating with the BEI and would not confirm and additional information about the officer’s position with the Mounties. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact the bureau via their website. Source: montreal.ctvnews.ca
• Karachi reports 11 deaths as fresh spells bring misery for citizens • Four killed in Balochistan, Hub Bridge among three washed away • Army, rescuers put on high alert in Pindi QUETTA / KARACHI: As authorities scrambled to mitigate the impacts of a torrential spell of monsoon rains, which has inundated cities and prompted flash floods across the country, at least 18 more people became victims of the deluge which washed away bridges and submerged houses and markets. Due to incessant rain and subsequent accumulation of water, protests against administration officials erupted in several areas of Sindh against hours-long power outages and inundation of residential areas as they complained that officials were nowhere to be found. Like the weekend, Monday also spelt misery for the citizens of
Karachi. Though the fresh spell of the current monsoon season had weakened in Karachi, it still claimed 11 more lives in a single day: five people lost their lives due to electrocution, while six persons drowned. Though several key roads were cleared by the administration after hours-long efforts in the city by the sea, life remained miserable in several low-lying areas, residential neighbourhoods, housing societies and commercial centres which remained flooded. The rain, which started early on Sunday continued to come down till 10am with frequent breaks and by the end of first half of the day the city had received up to 204-millimetre rain. The Met Office said that though the system took a break on Tuesday, it was likely to persist for at least two more days. Source: dawn.com

Former Surrey Mla And Mp Gordie Hogg Is Surrey First Mayoral Candidate
O
n, July 20, : Surrey First launched its October 15 Municipal election campaign today by naming former Surrey MLA and MP Gordie Hogg as its mayoral candidate, and introducing the first three of its slate of eight council nominees, including current city councillor Linda Annis, Bilal Cheema and MaryEm Waddington. “When it comes to the election in October, the question for Surrey voters is clear: have you had enough yet, and do you believe we can do better, together?” said Hogg, who began his career as a youth probation officer in Whalley, before being elected as a Surrey MLA and MP. Hogg was introduced at the campaign launch by Councillor Linda Annis, Executive Director of Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers, who was elected to council in 2018. After more than 22 years as a Surrey MLA and MP, Gordie Hogg remains on a variety of community boards and local committees, including KidsSport, Food Banks BC, and Brella Community Services, which provides services to seniors.” Hogg said he sees three “big opportunities” for a new Surrey council, including giving Surrey voters the final say on police transition, more and better access to city hall, and the chance to make Surrey “an opportunity city” that provides prosperity and livability for residents, families and businesses. “Linda Annis is often described as the adult in the room at city hall, and she is the only Surrey councillor who actually
ran on giving Surrey voters a referendum on policing, and we want to follow through on that commitment if we’re elected,” said Hogg. Hogg also introduced two new council candidates, who will be joined over the next two weeks by the rest of the 2022 Surrey First team. “Bilal Cheema and his young family live in Chimney Heights, and over the years he has been an advisor to several federal ministers, including Health, Fisheries and Oceans, and Immigration,” said Hogg. “In addition, Bilal has served as a negotiator for the government of Canada on such issues as resources and First Nations self-government. He will bring a strong understanding of government decision making to city hall, and like me he knows how important federal and provincial partnerships are to a growing city like Surrey, particularly as we work those relationships to help Surrey and its families. “Mary-Em is Executive Director of the BC Technology for Learning Society which collects, refurbishes and redistributes computers and laptops to schools, libraries and low-income families,” said Hogg. Paul Orazietti of Fraser Heights (far left) and Ajit Mehat of South Surrey (far right) have joined mayoral candidate Gordie Hogg and Surrey Councillor Linda Annis as Surrey First team candidates Media contacts: Greg Descantes
Liberal MP Sukh Dhaliwal joins Surrey Forward Introduces Seventh Council Candidate crowded race for Surrey mayor
S
The four-way race could potentially become more crowded if Gordie Hogg decides to run The race for Surrey mayor just got a little more crowded. ong-time Liberal MP Sukh Dhaliwal has made his candidacy for the top job in B.C.’s second largest city official, joining MLA and former MP Jinny Sims, Coun. Brenda Locke and incumbent mayor Doug McCallum in the race. After months of speculation, Dhaliwal held a news conference in Surrey Monday morning to announce his candidacy. “Over the last four years, we have seen divisive politics, unprecedented division, partisanship, no focus on the citizens of Surrey,” he said. Calling Surrey’s current council “secretive” and “biased,” Dhaliwal added that he plans to “repair a divided city.” Dhaliwal, MP for Surrey-Newton, has run against Sims in three federal elections and was a key organizer for McCallum when he was first mayor in the 1990s. Freeze taxes Dhaliwal began his campaign by announcing specific promises if elected.
L
The promises include rolling back a $200 increase to the yearly parcel tax that Surrey council enacted in 2020, along with “an immediate one-year tax freeze,” saying the move “will help the people that need the help now, because we are going through unprecedented uncertainty.” Hamish Telford, a political science professor at the University of the Fraser Valley, says freezing taxes in a growing city like Surrey could be problematic. “To freeze taxes means you’re going to freeze development in this fast growing city,” said Telford. When asked how he would pay for the tax cuts, Dhaliwal said Surrey’s accumulated surplus would support the changes. Given that McCallum has established himself as a promise-keeper on his policing and SkyTrain pledges, his opponents would have to differentiate themselves in the months before the general election vote on Oct. 15, Telford said. “Other than being different people, what are they actually going to do differently?” he said. Zubeen Sahib, candidate of City council of Surrey on Sukh Dhaliwal’s United Surrey team.
A
Canadian Muslim sister has been named to run in the upcoming Surrey Municipal Elections. Zubeen Sahib, who was born and raised here in the lower Mainland, has now confirmed that she has agreed to run for city council on Sukh Dhaliwal’s United Surrey team.
Zubeen is a cheerful, well spoken and a respectable woman in our community. She has a very supportive and caring nature and has regularly helped with local NGO’s to support the underprivileged, and the needy in the community. She possesses excellent leadership qualities and has previously helped with election campaigns at various levels. Zubeen is a Master Esthetician by profession. She is a married mother of 3 children. Her husband, Iltaf Sahib, is a well-known community leader who served as President of the BC Muslim Association among other roles. Zubeen has seen the growth in the City of Surrey over many years and is committed to helping make a positive difference in the future of the city. Election will take place on October 15th.
urrey-Panorama MLA Jinny Sims jumps into Mayoral race under banner of new Surrey Forward slate. She introduced the seventh Council Candidate Pram Jeet Mahli on July 27. Her Number one priority is to have openness and transparency at city council level and governance, but also to have democracy restored.” “Secondly, to build, going forward, fairness, so that everybody in the city no matter where they live or what their background, feels that things are being done fairly and openly.” As for affordability, Sims said “everybody in Surrey now is struggling.”The other Six Council Candidates are, Philip Aguirre, Jody Toor and Arsh Mander join candidates June
Liu, Ramon Bandong and Theresa Pidcock. Note: Till this date only two Muslim candidates have been taken from five slates. (except the Surrey First and United Surrey.)

joins Brenda Locke (a former Liberal MLA), Sukh Dhaliwal (a Liberal MP) and Jinny Sims (an NDP MLA) in hoping to usurp incumbent Doug McCallum, who wants to be reelected. The five candidates have differences when it comes to ideology and promises: Sims is the only person running on the traditional left of the political spectrum, Locke is the only one explicitly promising to return to the RCMP for policing, Hogg is the only one promising that “voters have the final say” on the matter, Dhaliwal the only one promising to roll back a $200/year increase to the city’s parcel tax. But in this race, political ideology and specific promises may not matter as much. Ground game matters Former Surrey councillor Barinder Rasode, who ran for mayor in 2014 and finished third, believes traditional political ideologies matter less to Surrey voters. “Partisan political support at either the federal or provincial level doesn’t translate into the municipality,” she said. “All of the traditional targets, whether it be voter turnout from neighbourhoods like South Surrey and Cloverdale, to involvement in Newton, this is all being put into the mix in a very unusual way.” Liberal MP Sukh Dhaliwal joins crowded race for Surrey mayor Rasode said that while McCallum has amassed plenty of controversy, his ability to follow through on his two promises around policing and transit means he could still retain much of the 41 per cent of votes he got in 2018. However, she pointed out there is room for other candidates to chip away at his voter base with residents questioning taxes introduced by his council, and his openness. “I think transparency and ethics at City Hall is definitely an issue that keeps making the headlines in Surrey,” said Rasode. With four candidates fighting over the antiMcCallum vote, each with slightly overlapping
ideologies or platforms, the ability for one candidate to stand out could prove difficult. Which is why turnout and organization will be key. Q&A: Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum says he’s still the man for the job despite criminal charge and council unrest “Whoever has the best ground game will likely emerge victorious in October,” said University of the Fraser Valley political scientist Hamish Telford. “This will come down to the slates that the candidates put together. Do they have attractive-looking slates with reputable people that appeal to the different parts of the city and help push the mayoralty candidate over the top?” Scramble for supporters It has created a scramble across Surrey to create the broadest team possible: in organizers, in candidates, in supporters. Consider Dhaliwal’s announcement earlier this week: one of his council candidates, Jasbir Sandhu, was an NDP MP. One of his key organizers is Brad Zubyk, a longtime B.C. Liberal operative. His opening event had large amounts of the city’s South Asian media present. At the same time, Sims had an opening event with hundreds of people in attendance. Locke’s team has been campaigning for over a year. And Hogg brings with him a sitting councillor and plenty of connections from his 30 years in local, provincial and federal politics. ANALYSIS: Jinny Sims hopes to be the Surrey mayoral candidate for voters wanting to turn the page, In other words, everyone still has a path forward. “Vote splitting, that’s what happens in democracies. And that’s part of the strength of democracy. And we should honour that. We shouldn’t be complaining about it,” said Hogg. Perhaps not. But it could be something everyone other than Doug McCallum complains about in the months to come. Source: bc.ca/news

The 7 most annoying parking habits They may even believe they have a good reason for doing what they do. But geez, it does make you wonder what they were thinking when you witness some of their decisions. Here are some parking habits that might make your blood boil and leave you shaking your head in disbelief.

T
his is a great topic, one we can all relate to and, unless you’re new to the road, have been affected by in some way. Straight away, it brings images to mind of social media jokes, rants and videos that mock bad parkers. But before I join the fray and let loose on them as well, what exactly is the definition of annoying? Well, according to the Macquarie online dictionary, to annoy is to disturb in a way that is displeasing, troubling, or slightly irritating. Annoying barely covers it then really, and a turn of phrase that may surface when directly faced with those with terrible parking habits might be: ‘This is infuriating’, or, ‘This is really infuriating’, or perhaps, ‘This is @#$king infuriating’, and finally, ‘Where’s my gun?’

Access to Gluten-Free Diet in Canada
Purpose
T
his policy brief will discuss the challenges that are faced by Canadians in accessing gluten-free diet options in the market. The brief will further address the steps that are being taken to improve accessibility and offer recommendations for improving the accessibility to the concerned population.
Background
Gluten is found in wheat, barley and rye. A gluten-free diet is adopted by people who are suffering from Celiac disease, non-Celiac gluten sensitivity, wheat allergy, or as a personal choice to avoid gluten in the diet. People with the aforementioned disorders must maintain a strict gluten-free diet as this is the only treatment option available right now. In Canada, 1.9% of the popula-
tion follows a gluten-free diet due to the underlying reasons mentioned above. Around 0.5-1% of the Western population suffers from Celiac disease and the percentage is ever increasing because of an increase in the various environmental factors such as stress in our daily lives. Apart from the stress of being diagnosed with Celiac disease, people suffer from the additional stress of accessing a gluten-free diet because gluten is a widely used ingredient in baked goods, various sauces, breakfast options, processed food, and many more. Adapting to a new lifestyle puts an added emotional stress on Celiacs. Additionally, gluten-free food options are not available in all grocery stores which also impacts the cost of a gluten-free diet further affecting the pockets of Canadian Celiacs. Lack of easy availability of gluten-free food, Canadian Celiacs tend to avoid social gatherings which affects their mental and social health. Altogether, these are the multiple factors that should be kept in mind in improving accessibility to a gluten-free diet. As per a survey done by the Canadian Celiac Association (2020), 68% of food banks reported more options for a glutenfree diet for concerned individuals.
What is being done to address it currently?
Health Canada conducted multiple studies to assess the minimum amount of gluten that can be tolerated by Celiacs in their diet in a day. As per Health Canada (2012), this threshold value came out to be less than 10mg/day which means foods containing gluten of less than 20 parts per million are safe for consumption by Celiacs. Health Canada utilized this result to label food options like gluten-free for Celiacs to identify while grocery shopping. Further, a volunteer-based federally registered organization called Canadian Celiac Association works to provide access to resources for people suffering from Celiac disease, gluten intolerance, and wheat allergy. Such organizations provide a plethora of knowledge for Celiacs so they can easily identify hidden sources of gluten in their diet. Also, tax benefits are given to people who follow a gluten-free diet as a piece of medical advice.

nosed patients. Clarity of information on gluten-free options will allay anxiety associated with the diagnosis. Clear labeling on gluten-free foods for easy identification by the concerned group of the population. Increased awareness by incorporating nutrition courses at the college level, promoting tax benefits given to people suffering from Celiac Disease. Providing proper training to restaurant staff and chefs so they are aware of gluten-free options and can prepare them without cross-contamination. Developing applications for smartphones that provide information about the location of grocery stores selling gluten-free options.
Conclusion
Access to a gluten-free diet should be improved to address the problems faced by people suffering from Celiac disease, gluten intolerance, and wheat allergy. Efforts have been done by the government in the past which have proved beneficial too. Recommendations for improving But more work is to be done to help the concerned population in adjusting to the new access to a Gluten-free diet normal in amore holistic manner. • Improved quality of the information By: Prachi Cooner ,April 15, 2022 provided by dieticians and primary Source: static1.squarespace.com healthcare providers to newly diag-

Importance of Self Discipline
When people want to be more disciplined, they often think about time management. By forming better habits and not procrastinating, you can save a lot of time on different tasks and make better use of the time you have. Time management is one of the best skills you can develop because it applies to just about every area of your life. Discipline helps you build that skill.
discipline. They often wake up at the same time every day, have a routine they always follow, and commit to self-improvement through continued education or training in their field. Tennis star Serena Williams didn’t get where she is without self-discipline. You don’t need to be a master at everything you do, but if mastery in something is your goal, discipline is non-negotiable.
Do you have bad habits in your life? Research shows building new habits is more effective than simply trying to stop an undesired behavior. New habits can still be challenging, which is why discipline matters. When you commit to your new habit consistently, it becomes easier, and – eventually – more natural. As a result, you’re also able to set aside bad habits.
Everyone has goals in life. Work goals are very common, but goals can also include things like learning a new language, getting better at a hobby, or an exercise goal. You need discipline to get what you want. It won’t happen overnight. Discipline ensures you build new habits, stop procrastinating, and effectively manage your time. With time and discipline, you’ll see significant improvement and find success.
knowledging the feeling, soothing yourself if necessary, and communicating your feelings to others.
Procrastination is a common problem. We’ve all struggled with putting off things or waiting for the magic moment when we feel ready. When you’re disciplined and have formed good habits, your ability to get things done doesn’t depend on how you feel. In a way, discipline works like auto-pilot. You don’t need to wait for the right feeling or motivation to start. Disciplined people can push through the temptation to procrastinate and just start.
There’s nothing quite as satisfying as forming new habits, breaking old ones, and meeting your goals. These victories significantly boost a person’s self-esteem, which makes it easier to continue being disciplined. You’ll feel confident in your ability to stick to a routine, manage your time, and resist procrastination. High self-esteem carries over into the rest of your life and relationships. High self-esteem also increases your emotional resilience in tough situations.
A lack of discipline can have significant effects on your life. As an example, if you aren’t good at time management, you might struggle to meet deadlines at work, get to events and appointments on schedule, or spend enough time with your loved ones. You can get a reputation for not being reliable. Certain conditions can affect a person’s ability to manage their time, like ADHD. Discipline still applies, though it can look different from person to person based on what works for them. Many strategies can make time management easier, like organizing your schedule so it isn’t overwhelming and setting alarms.
Discipline applies to your emotions as well as your habits. No emotions are “bad,” but some are more challenging than others. Anger is a good example. Luckily, you can learn to have discipline when it comes to Discipline helps you master things this emotion. That doesn’t mean suppressThe vast majority of people who are the best ing it. Discipline helps you learn to manage at what they do have one thing in common: it and express it healthily. This takes practice.
you’re disciplined, you’ll most likely feel less stressed than before. Better time management can play a big role in this because many hold stress when they’re rushed and not using their time well. Discipline in general makes life less chaotic. This helps people feel more in control and grounded. Email: asmashums@gmail.com

ocialmedia.jpg, 74% of American adults online use social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest, as of Jan. 2014, up from 26% in 2008.On social media sites like these users may develop their profiles, communicate with others, share ideas and thoughts, music, photos, videos and more. The impact of social media has been in all facets of life: interpersonal relationships, education, business, religion, social movements and politics.
History
Facebook reached one billion monthly users worldwide on October 4, 2012, making it the most popular social networking site with one in seven people on the planet as members.71% of online adults in the United States use Facebook. Every day, Facebook manages 4.5 billion “Likes,” 4.75 billion content shares, and over 300 million photo uploads.[3] As of Sep. 2014, 51% of US adults use YouTube, 28% use Pinterest, 28% use LinkedIn, 26% use Instagram, and 23% use Twitter.[4] Twitter has 288 million monthly active users and over 500 million tweets are sent daily.[5] Among online adults, use of more than one social networking site increased from 42% in 2013 to 52% in 2014.
Social Media for Muslims
Our mission as Muslims is to learn, to put into practice and to convey the message of Islam. We need to utilize our time wisely and stay away from sin. As for conveying the message of Islam, we need to use whatever is at our disposal to convey this beautiful message. Islam governs how to use social media, which can be understood with the parable
Discipline in one area affects discipline in others
The interesting thing about discipline is that it doesn’t form in isolation. That means that while you may be focusing on just one area of your life, being disciplined expands into the rest of your life, too. That’s because discipline results in new habits and thinking patterns that apply everywhere. Thanks to the increased self-confidence you get from a “victory” in one area, it’s also often easier to develop discipline everywhere.
Discipline improves your ability to Discipline helps reduce stress Everyone experiences stress, but when manage challenging emotions
Social Media In Islam
of using a knife. You can use a knife to cook food or as a weapon to harm someone. It depends how you use it. Likewise social media should be used wisely, so that you take the good from it and leave what is not beneficial for you. There are magazines, internet forums, blogs, wikis, social networks, podcasts, books and so many other things that we have access to. However we have to make sure that we use them in the correct way. For example, you can connect with many scholars and students of knowledge on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube and benefit greatly. You can stay in touch with distant family members and friends. You can also network with your professional contacts through LinkedIn. Make sure that your online friends are people who remind you of goodness and turn you away from that what is bad for you.
Tread With Caution on Social Media
1. Social media enables the spread of unreliable and false information. 49.1% of people have heard false news via social media. 2. Social networking sites can lead to stress and offline relationship problems. A University of Edinburgh Business School study found the more Facebook friends a person has, the more stressful the person finds Facebook to use.[7] According to a February 9, 2012 Pew Internet report, 15% of adult social network users had an experience on a social networking site that caused a friendship to end, 12% of adult users had an experience online that resulted in a faceto-face argument, and 3% of adults reported a physical confrontation as a result of an ex-
perience on a social networking site. 3. Social networking sites entice people to waste time. 40% of 8 to 18 year olds spend 54 minutes a day on social media sites.[8] 36% of people surveyed listed social networking as the “biggest waste of time,” above fantasy sports (25%), watching TV (23%), and shopping (9%). 42% of American Internet users play games like Farmville or Mafia Wars on social networking sites. 4. Internet-based social networking can lead to personality and brain disorders. The use of social networking sites is correlated with personality and brain disorders, such as the inability to have in-person conversations, a need for instant gratification, ADHD, and self-centered personalities, as well as addictive behaviors. Pathological Internet Use (caused or exacerbated by social networking use) is associated with feelings of loneliness, depression, anxiety and general distress.[11] The 2013 Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is evaluating “Internet Addiction Disorder” for inclusion. A 2008 UCLA study revealed web users had fundamentally altered prefrontal cortexes[12] due, in part, to the fast pace of social networking sites rewiring the brain with repeated exposure. 5. Social networking sites enable “sexting,” which can lead to criminal charges and the unexpected proliferation of personal images. Once restricted to cell phone texts, “sexting” has moved to social media with teens posting, or sending via messaging, risqué photos of themselves or others. In 2008 and 2009,
US law enforcement agencies saw 3,477 cases of youth-produced sexual images with 2,291 agencies seeing at least one case. As a result, teens and adults are being charged with possessing and distributing child pornography, even if the teen took and distributed a photo of him/herself. 88% of private self-produced sexual images posted to social media are stolen by pornography websites and disseminated to the public, often without the subject’s knowledge. 6. Beware of celebrity culture. Beware of getting too fascinated with celebrity culture. Yes, sadly, Muslims are into celebrity scholars! Fame is poison for a scholar as much as it is for anyone else. How famous someone appears to be online is not an assurance that what they are teaching is correct. The celebrity “sheikh” is not a substitute to learning from your local Imam or scholar. You can never learn manners from an online sheikh. If your favorite sheikh is always posting what he eats, where he is going, and asking his fans to tell them what prayer they want him to make for them during his Umrah trip, look elsewhere for Islamic guidance. Iraqi protesters storm the parliament Situationer: Pml-N To Switch Gears in Baghdad’s Green Zone Back To ‘Attack’ Mode?
Hundreds of the demonstrators, mostly supporters of Iraqi Shia leader Muqtada alSadr, break into the heavily fortified Green Zone in protest at a rival bloc’s nomination for prime minister. Hundreds of Iraqi demonstrators, most of them followers of the Iraqi Shia leader Muqtada al-Sadr, have stormed the parliament building in Baghdad to protest against the nomination for prime minister by Iran-backed parties. No lawmakers were present in parliament when the protesters penetrated the capital’s high-security Green Zone, home to government buildings and diplomatic missions, on Wednesday. Only security forces were inside the building and they appeared to allow
the protesters in with relative ease. The protesters oppose the candidacy of Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, a former minister and ex-provincial governor, who is the proIran Coordination Framework’s pick for premier. Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi called on the protesters to “immediately withdraw” from the Green Zone. He warned in a statement that security forces would see to “the protection of state institutions and foreign missions, and prevent any harm to security and order”. AlSadr’s bloc won 73 seats in Iraq’s October 2021 election, making it the largest faction in the 329-seat parliament. But since the vote, talks to form a new government have stalled and al-Sadr has stepped down from the political process. Protesters on Wednesday carried portraits of the Shia leader. Riot police earlier used water cannons to repel demonstrators pulling down cement blast walls. But many breached the gates to the area. The demonstrators walked down the Green Zone’s main thoroughfare, with dozens gathering outside the doors to the parliament building... Source: aljazera.com/
Sri Lanka’s parliament extends state of emergency amid crackdown
Sri Lanka’s parliament has extended a state of emergency declared by President Ranil Wickremesinghe as his government cracks down on demonstrators it accuses of violence while trying to find a way out of the country’s worst economic crisis. The vote passed by 120 to 63 in the 225-member parliament on Wednesday, while the remaining legislators abstained. The emergency ordinance, which empowers troops to arrest and detain suspects for long periods, would have lapsed on Wednesday if it had not been ratified by parliament. Wickremesinghe declared a state of emergency last week as acting president before legislators elected him to serve the remainder of Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s five-year term until 2024. Rajapaksa fled Sri Lanka after thousands of protesters stormed the president’s official
residence and other buildings. He later resigned from Singapore. A demonstrators interacts with Police special task force personnel standing guard while blocking a road as demonstrators take part in a protest march against Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Ruling party members who back Wickremesinghe said that while protests were reasonable at the beginning of the crisis, groups that do not believe in parliamentary democracy and want to capture power through unconstitutional means had infiltrated the demonstrators and were causing disturbances. Opposition parties criticised the state of emergency as a government move to stifle Within a day of Wickremesinghe’s election, the military raided and dismantled camps the protesters had set up for more than 100 days opposite the president’s office. Some protesters were beaten. Police said in separate Wednesday statements that they had arrested activists Kusal Sandaruwan and Weranga Pushpika on unlawful assembly charges.Student leader Dhaniz Ali was arrested when he boarded a Dubai-bound flight at the country’s main airport on Tuesday evening. The Directors of
The Human Care BC Society
AS most of the legal tea leaf readers had predicted over the last four days, the Supreme Court on Tuesday night dethroned Hamza Shehbaz, declared Chaudhry Parvez Elahi as the chief minister, and told President Arif Alvi to administer the oath within the next 150 minutes of the order if the governor causes any delay, after which the PML-N feels ‘trapped and deceived’ — in every sense of the word — physically, politically, and most importantly, psychologically. The immediate reaction to the short SC order from the party supremo and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was instructive. He tweeted: “Pakistan turned into a circus. Salute to the three (Supreme Court) judges.” His daughter and heir apparent, Maryam, called it a “judicial coup” in her reaction. Both these tweets, as party insiders explain, reflect the line of thinking in the PML-N that may now set the course of their politics. “Expect a change of policy direction as well as gear in the days to come.” The Tuesday decision did not hit the party out of the blue; it rather concluded a long series of events that ‘generated and cemented’ a sense of deception in the party, explains a party leader, who did not want to named because the party is still in the process of debating its future course of action. In fact, none of the leaders Dawn spoke to last night
wanted to be named for the same reason. “Ever since the PML-N took over in Islamabad in April, it did not want, and was not allowed to either, to deal with Imran Khan and the PTI as outgoing parties are usually dealt with in the country — arrests, investigations, corruption cases and police chasing and rounding up party leaders,” the PMLN man said. “Rather, the party soon sensed that the judiciary is turning out to be the new protector of Imran Khan since he started getting relief in years-old cases, which were registered even before him coming to power and included charges like terrorism. He was allowed to protest and launch long marches under judicial protection, which turned into a huge encouragement for him. He went to court on the slightest of excuses and got instant relief – a pattern that politically hit the PML-N. Source: dawn.com/
Can talk to TTP or separatists, not ‘thieves’, says Imran • Vows to continue Sehat Card, Ehsas Ration schemes if returned to power • PTI moves LHC for disqualification of Shehbaz, Bilawal, Rana Sana ISLAMABAD/LAHORE: Expressing his gratitude to the nation for what he called “foiling an international conspiracy” by supporting his candidate, Parvez Elahi, in the recent Punjab chief minister’s election, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Wednesday ruled out any possibility of sitting down for talks with the ruling coalition.“I can talk to the [Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan], the separatists of Balochistan and Sindh, but not with thieves. Will you speak to someone who robs your home?” he said in his address on Wednesday night, which was being celebrated as a ‘thanksgiving day’ on the call of his party. “Throughout my life, I have witnessed such enthusiasm only once before, and that was during the 1965 war; at that time, everybody thought that the nation was fighting. And now, I saw the same enthusiasm among the masses during the by-polls in the 20 constituencies of Punjab,” he said. Insisting that he wanted good relations, even with US — which he accuses of trying to engineer his ouster from power through a conspiracy — but urged the nation to prefer “death to slavery”. “I do not want bad relations with the US, where we export more than any other country and where a large
number of the Pakistani community resides. But death is better than slavery and we have to live with self-respect,” he added. Saying that general elections were the sole solution to the prevailing crises facing the country, brought on by the ineptitude of the government that was imposed on the nation through foreign conspiracy, Mr Khan vowed that once he comes into power again, he would put the country on its own feet and would only ask overseas Pakistanis and not the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for financial assistance. In his remarks, which sounded like an early election speech, Mr Khan once again expressed a complete lack of trust in the incumbent Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja. He continued to allege that Mr Raja was involved in rigging in the recent by-elections for 20 seats of the provincial assembly, where his party won the bulk of seats...Source: dawn.com/
