Masjid Aulia Allah Hosts Shuhada-e-Karbala Conference

The Association of Islamic Charitable Projects holds Hijrah Celebration at Douglas College ,NW

On July 30, the Islamic Associa tion of Western Canada in asso ciation with Jamia Masjid Aulia Allah held Shuda-e-Karbala Conference at Fiji Islamic Centre Surrey to remember the great sacrifice of Hazrat Imam-e- Hus sain (AS) and his companions in Karbala. It was attended by the Muslim community members. Mr. Haider Khan did MC. The program started with Tilawat-e-Quran-Pak by Qari Mohammad Amin after Abul Salis and Saad Salis presented. Naats e Rasool. Br. Khan invited Imam Syed Badiuddin So harwardy, who came from Calgary for this Shuada e Karbla conference. Br Syed said that Prophet (saw) left for us Holy Quran, Sunnah, and love with Ahel Bayt, and if we love with Mohammad(saw) it is manda tory for every believer that they love Ahel Bayt, and Allhumdulillah we all send Da rood o salam in each prayer. If someone in prayer did not recite Darood in his prayer then how his or her prayer will complete? I am also worried about the young genera tion, who have very little knowledge about actual facts of Shahadat e Imam Hussain (RA). Br, Syed explained the two questions of Miracle Media, first was about the Five members of Ahel Baytn and why not Um mahat ul Momineen and other children are not a part of that, and the second was about “when the Shia Maslak has been started. He said, how the Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) set the example of His and his family’s sac rifice for Kalama e Haq for Dean e Islam for the rest of his life. We do love and respect each companion of the Prophet(saw). Al lah (SWT) granted to Mohammad (saw) first time Hassan and Hussain names at this land. How much our Prophet (saw) loved His grandsons no one can imagine. The program was concluded with the recitation of Darood o salam and then after Maghrib prayer, delicious food has been served.

By: Dr. Mohammad Akbar Shia muslim community of Lower Mainland organizes a procession in downtown Vancouver every year to commemorate the great sacrifice of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muham mad some 1400 years ago in Karbala, Iraq. Millions of people gather every year at the shrine of Imam Hussain during these days of Muharram to pay tribute and homage to Imam Hussain. And millions, who are not able to go to Karbala, commemorate this great martyrdom in their respective cities all over the world. These gatherings all over the world are a testament to the greatness of Imam Hussain to protect humanity from oppression, injustice, tyranny, and cruelty unleashed by Yazid – the ruler at that time. In order to honour Hussain’s sacrifice, the Aza-e-Hussain Association of BC also part nered with Canadian Blood Services and a number of Shia Muslim community mem bers have donated blood in the name of Imam Hussain. The procession in downtown Vancouver this year was attended by about 1200 men, women, and children from various nation Thealities.procession started from Vancouver public library and ended at Vancouver Arts Gallery.

The Association of Islamic Charitable Projects held its annual commemo rating celebration for the coming of the New Hijri Year 1444 at Douglas Col lege, New Westminster Campus on Sunday, July 31st. This celebration was a fantastic achievement for the AICP in particular, and the Muslim community in the Lower Main land in general. The preparation, staging, and coordination of the happy festival took a significant amount of time and effort.

MIR A TLE THE HE MIR A LE IT is a year since the Taliban stormed Kabul to retake control of Afghanistan some two decades after the conservative Islamic re gime was routed by American forces following the events of 9/11. It was a return of the old order though with the promise of some moderation. Unfortunately, the Taliban regime has fully reverted to its old ways. While the war has ended and there is relative peace, Afghanistan is wit nessing a great leap backward as fundamental human rights are se verely curtailed. The international community may have remained engaged with the Taliban adminis tration but there is no sign of their recognising them formally. The Taliban’s own intransigence, fostered by the hard-liners among them, regarding women and other human rights as well as their con stant violation of the promises made have stood in the way of formal rec ognition by the international com munity, besides being a cause of seri ous concern even to those countries that had been in favour of a more le nient approach towards them. Thus, a year down the road, the country continues to face international iso lation as the Taliban, who favour a strict interpretation of religious law, have gone back on their pledges to moderate their stance on women’s education and women in govern ment offices, among other things. The regime’s dreaded Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice is back in action. Besides, Taliban officials have also banned women from travelling in taxis, unless a male family member accompanies them, for a distance greater than 72 kilometres. Such ac tions remind one of the strict rules framed and enforced by the Taliban regime of Mullah Omar before 9/11. Those who were hailing the Taliban takeover of Kabul last year should be over their euphoria by now. Finding themselves under interna tional pressure, the Taliban had ear lier announced they would reopen high schools for girls but reversed their decision quickly, shattering the dreams and aspirations of a mil lion girl students who were excited about returning to their studies. The rationale given by the Taliban’s education authorities for their ac tion was that a plan built on Islamic principles was to be drawn up to reopen the schools; until such time, girl students would not be able to access these schools. Some officials are even said to have said that reli gion asserts that Muslim women re ceive limited education. There is no time frame as to when these schools will Clearly, reopen.this reversal of the decision to reopen girls’ high schools shows that the hard-liners call the shots in the ruling administration and con trol its leadership. The move came following a council meeting. Mean while, in their ongoing attempt to stamp their conservative writ, the regime has also imposed restric tions on the media in the country and have cracked down on peaceful protests. Such moves only make one thing clear: the Taliban want their obscurantist views to prevail over international engagement, and in order to do so, the radicals among them have no qualms about sidelin ing the more moderate Taliban ele ments. Such an approach will surely spell doom for a country already in the throes of multiple economic, so cial and political challenges. There seems to be little realisation among Taliban ranks that the coun try’s problems cannot be successful ly solved while Afghanistan remains isolated from the rest of the world which is not willing to accept a ret rogressive regime that thwarts fun damental human rights and equal rights for women. In spite of some humanitarian aid from the international community, which helped to alleviate last win ter’s misery in Afghanistan, the crisis is far from over. Increasing interna tional isolation will only worsen the regime’s predicament. With such scant regard for human rights, including the Taliban’s Uturn on ensuring that girls receive an education — a key condition of potential donors if Afghanistan is to receive foreign aid and recogni tion — it is unlikely that donors will come forward. The regime’s actions could cost it millions of dollars in for eign Moreaid.worrying are reports of trans national militant groups resurfacing in Afghanistan and presenting a se rious threat to regional security. The presence of Al Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri in Kabul, where he was apparently living under the protec tion of the Taliban interior minister, means that the worst fears of Af ghanistan once again becoming the centre of militant activities are com ing true. He was killed in a US drone strike in a highly protected upscale neighbourhood of the capital. The increasing frequency of Zawa hiri’s video and audio messages had reinforced suspicions about his pres ence in the country. His killing has come as a serious blow to the Tali ban government which had given its commitment to the international community to not allow any militant activity on Afghan soil. It is apparent that a faction of the Taliban refused to break its ties with the global ter rorist Besidesnetwork.AlQaeda, there are militant groups like the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pa kistan (TTP) and the East Turkestan Islamic Movement that continue to use Afghanistan as a base for their cross-border operations and are a source of serious concern to Islama bad and Beijing, the two capitals which have been urging the interna tional community to maintain close contact with the Taliban adminis tration. There has been a marked increase in militant activities attrib uted to the TTP in Pakistan’s former tribal regions and other parts of KP. The militant attacks have taken the lives of scores of Pakistani soldiers over the past one year. Instead of taking action against the terrorist sanctuaries, the Taliban have been calling Pakistan to negotiate peace with the terrorist group. It’s apparent that the TTP is being protected by the Haqqani faction of the Afghan Taliban. The initial eu phoria among a section of the Pa kistani ruling elite after the Taliban took Kabul last year should have van ished with the spillover effects of the conservative regime in the country. One year on, the Taliban regime in Afghanistan may not be facing any organised resistance yet with its backward actions, public discontent has been rising and could take the form of a strong movement. Moreo ver, the Taliban’s protection to trans national militant groups could cause its further international isolation.

I took a few of these and kept them in my Whenevercar. someone parked in considerately, I would write on one side of a paper LEARN TO PARK. On the other side, I would have crushed lipstick. I would then place this on the driver’s side, with the lipstick on the windshield. As soon as the driver removed the note, the lipstick would spread and smear all over the driver’s area of vision, making it impossible for him to see. Lipstick is very difficult to remove from the windscreen. I bet he never did that again! Sincerely, Mehboob Hajee

Albuquerque police officials told a news confer ence that they were following a number of leads and issued a bulletin with photos of a four-door, dark gray Volkswagen sedan with tinted win dows that they described as a “vehicle of inter est” in the investigation. It was left unclear how the car was tied to the case, and police said they had yet to determine whether they were seeking one or more suspects in the investigation. The three latest victims belonged to the same mosque, according to Tahir Gauba, a spokes person for the Islamic Centre of New Mexico (ICNM). Officials were withholding the identity of the man killed on Friday pending notifica tion of next of kin. Hussain also worked on the campaign team for US Representative Melanie Stansbury of New Mexico.Police said they were treating those two slayings, along with Friday’s killing, as linked to the November 7 murder of 62-year-old Mo hammad Ahmadi, also a Muslim from Afghani stan, who was shot to death in a parking lot outside a halal supermarket and cafe. “There are several things in common with all four of the homicides,” city police spokesman Gilbert Gal legos told reporters on Sunday. Asked whether investigators consider the kill ings to be hate crimes, Gallegos said, “Hate is determined by motive, and we don’t know that motive at this point.” Gauba estimated there are 3,000 to 5,000 Mus lims living in and around Albuquerque, ac counting for about 85 per cent of the entire state’s Islamic population. PTI chairman and former prime minister Im ran Khan on Wednesday accused the coali tion government of hatching a conspiracy to pit his party against the military. “They have prepared a plan to crush the PTI,” he said in an address to supporters via video link from Islamabad. Imran’s statements come after the government alleged that the ex-premier and other PTI leaders were spreading hate against the country’s institutions. On Tuesday, PTI leader Shahbaz Gill was arrested on charges of sedition and inciting the public against state institutions. Gill was presented in Islama bad High Court today where the police were granted the politician’s two-day physical re mand. In his address today, Imran said that a “frightening conspiracy” was being devised to present “Pakistan’s biggest political party and the army as opponents”. “Let me tell you [...] this plot is extremely dan gerous and can damage the country,” he said, recalling that when the PTI came to power, the coalition government was “pained” to see his relationship with the army. The remote-sensing Khayyam satellite, which Iran has said it wants to use for non-military purposes, was successfully launched on Tues day, according to footage aired live by Iranian state television. Earlier this month, The Wash ington Post quoted anonymous Western intel ligence officials as claiming that Russia plans to use the satellite “for months or longer” to assist its war efforts in Ukraine. The claim has been rejected by the Iranian Space Agency (ISA), which said last week it will have exclusive con trol over the satellite “from day one”, and Rus sia’s Roscosmos. OTTAWA - The government is working hard to meet its end-of-year deadline to de liver dental-care coverage to kids, the deputy prime minister said Tuesday, but added pro viding new services is “complicated.”

This year, the newspaper said, the event will be commemorated with silent marches cen tered on 75 refugee colonies and exhibitions will also be set up at more than 5,000 loca tions, including universities and colleges. In a statement issued today, the Foreign Of fice said that the Indian government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was at tempting to play with the sentiments of the people through the distorted interpretation of history to “hypocritically and one-sidedly invoke the tragic events and mass migration that occurred in the wake of Independence in 1947”. “If the Indian leaders genuinely care about agony, suffering, and pain, they must work to improve the conditions of the Mus lims and other minorities in India,” it said. The Foreign Office (FO) on Wednesday con demned the Indian government’s “mischie vous move” of observing “Partition Horrors Remembrance Day” on August 14 — Paki stan’s day of independence. According to The Hindu, the decision to observe August 14 as a remembrance day was taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to remember the “struggles and sacrifices of our people”.

The Liberals agreed to offer dental coverage to low- and middle-income children by the end of the year as part of their confidence and supply deal with the New Democrats to keep the minority government from top pling before 2025. Several groups have raised concerns about the very tight deadline, and four sources close to the program say the government is working on a temporary so lution to give money directly to qualifying families while it comes up with a perma nent program. ”As we experienced, for ex ample, in rolling out child-care agreements across the country, delivering new services to Canadians is complicated,” Freeland said when asked about the stopgap plan at a news conference in Toronto.“I think Canadians understand that.” Freeland did not confirm or deny the government’s immediate plans but said the Liberals are committed to the dental-care program, and it’s a commit ment she’s “happy to make.”The government could pursue dental-care deals that resemble the ones it made with provinces to lower the cost of child care, ... My Rabb I lie down and with Your name I rise, so if You should take my soul then have mercy upon it, and if You should return my soul then protect it in the manner You do so with Your righteous slaves`.)” [al-Bukhari & Muslim] Upon rising, one should recite the sup plications made by the Messenger of Al lah (saw). Hudhaifah (RA) said: “When the Prophet (saw) would go to his bed, he would say:`Bismika amootu wa ahyaa. (`With your Name I die, and I live.’) Upon rising, he would say: Alhamdulillaah-illadhi ahyaanaa ba’da maa amaatanaa wa ilayh-in-nushoor.’ (‘All praise and thanks be to the One who brought us to life after having caused us to die, and to Him will we be resurrected’)” One should try to retire to bed early at night, except in cases of necessity. The Prophet (saw) hated to sleep before the Night (‘ Ishaa) Prayer and to speak after it.” [al-Bukhari & Muslim] It is disliked to sleep on one’s stomach. Abu Hurairah (RA) said that the Messenger of Allah (saw) passed by a person lying on his stomach and kicked him hard. He said to him “Indeed Allah dislikes this way of ly ing.” [al-Tirmidhi] One should be careful and take precautions from things which might bring harm. The Prophet (saw) said: “Indeed this fire is an enemy to you, so when you sleep, extinguish it.” [al-Bukhari & Muslim] Manner of Approaching One’s Spouse Before having marital relations with your spouse, one should mention the Name of Allah in the manner the Prophet (saw) de scribed. He said: “If someone says (before sexual intercourse) when he approached his wife, ‘With the Name of Allah; O Allah, keep Satan away from us, and keep Satan away from what you grant us [from offspring],’ then, if Allah grants them a child, he (Satan) will not harm him.”

It[al-Bukhari]isdislikedthat one travels alone, except in cases of necessity in which he cannot find anyone to accompany him, The Prophet (saw) said to a person who ar rived from a journey: “Who accompanied you?” He replied, “No one accompanied me.” Upon that, the Messenger of Allah (saw) said “A lone traveler is a devil, two are two devils, and three is a traveling group.”

One[al-Haakim]should choose good company and there should be one person as leader among them. The Prophet (saw) said: “If three people set out on a journey, one of them should me made a leader.” [Abu Dawood]. Before returning from a jour ney, one should inform his spouse of his expected arrival. The Prophet (saw) would say this, and he would enter upon them at night, The Prophet (saw) said: “If one of you is absent for a long while, let hint not enter upon his spouse (upon his re turn) at night.” [al-Bukhari & Muslim] One should bid his friends and family fare well One should not delay returning to his family after he has finished his business The Prophet (saw) said: “Travel is a portion of punishment such that a person would he prevented from eat ing, drinking, and sleeping. If one of you finishes his business, let him hum) to his family.” [al-Bukhari & Muslim] The Manners of Dealing with Pub lic Property

Now, back to your inquiry, if your friend is sure that his roots are from the Ahl al-Bayt, then it is correct, he is not allowed to collect zakat or other sadaqat (charity). The prophets family is an honorable family and should not receive charity from people who may give it out of pity or mercy. On the other hand, he may receive gifts. Thank you for asking and God knows best. (Source: IslamQA) one should act when traversing roads or walkways. He said,O you who believe! Eat not up your prop erty among yourselves unjustly. [ 14:29] Islam has deemed the profits made from trade of the purest and best means of earning a living. The Prophet (saw) was asked about which earn ing was best and most pure, and he replied: “Work done by a person using his own hands [i.e. manual labor] and every truthful And sincere trade.” [Ahmad] Islam has enjoined that the individual be truthful while conducting business. The Prophet (saw) said “A Muslim merchant who is truthful and trust worthy will be with the martyrs on the Day of Re quital.” [al-Haakim] One should explain any faults which may not be apparent in the product. The Prophet (saw) said: “It is impermissible for anyone to sell anything except if he clarifies any fault that may be found in it, and anyone who knows of it should (also) clarify it.” [Ahmad] One should not cheat. Abu Hurairah narrated that the Prophet (saw) passed by a pile of food. He put his hands inside it and felt water on his fingers. He said“What is this, o seller of (this) food?” He said: ‘It was left out in the rain, O Messenger of Allah!” He said, “Could you not have put it on top of the food so that people could see it? Whoever deceives (people) is not from us.” [Muslim) A person should be truthful in his dealings and not lie. The Prophet (saw) said: “The two parties (involved in the trade) have an op tion (to cancel the trade) as long as they have not parted. If they have both told the truth and clari fied all aspects their trade will be blessed for them. lint if they conceal faults and other aspects) and lie, the blessings of the trade will be wiped out.” [alBukhari Muslim]. One should be easygoing while buying and selling, for it is a to form and strength en relations between the buyer and be easy going Seller and does away with the causes of materialism which destroy human and brotherly relationships. The Prophet said: May Allah have mercy on a per son who is easygoing when he buys, sells, or asks the repayment of a loan.” [al-Bukhari] One should not swear oaths when he trades. The Prophet (saw) “Besaid careful and stay away from swearing many oaths when trading, for [if he does so falsely] the buyer will buy. but then its blessing will be wiped out.” [Muslim]It encourages that one takes back the sale if a person is regretful of the purchase. The Prophet (saw) said: –Whoever takes back the sale of his brother, Allah will take back [the punishment] of his slips on the Day of Resurrection.” [Abu Dawood & ibn Maajah] These are some of the manners and etiquettes which Islam has prescribed. There are many others, but due to brevity, we cannot mention them here. It is sufficient to know that there is no matter in life, except that there is a Qur’anic verse, or Prophetic tradition which addresses it the reason for this is that a Muslim’s entire life would become an act of worship, and a means to increase his good deeds.

One[al-Bukhari]shouldsport with his spouse. The Prophet (saw) said to Jaabir: “Did you get married O Jaabir?” I said, “Yes.” He said, “To a virgin or a previously married woman? Jaabir answered: ‘To a previously married woman.’ He said: ‘Why didn’t you get married to a virgin, so that you sport with her, and make her laugh and she makes you laugh.”

Question 2463 : my friend’s family roots says that he is from AL ALBAYT family ,his roots connected to AL HUSAIN BIN ALI , so heard that SADAQA is haram for him , so he wants to know is this right , if so what are the kinds of sadaqa he should not eat Answer: There are many people who claim to be descendants of the prophets family (pbuh), but a lot of the time, if the claim is not documented by credible genealogists or by physical sources or by trusted sources, then such claims should not be taken seriously.

The Prophet (saw) said: “Indeed, from the worst stations of peo ple on the Day of Resurrection is one who has marital relations with his wife and then spreads her private matters.” (Muslim) Etiquettes of Traveling Before one sets out on a journey, he should make sure that he returns all trusts to their owners, settles any debts, and leaves his family sufficient provisions. He should also return anything he has taken unjustly to its rightful owner. The Prophet (saw) said “Whoever has something which he took unjustly from his brother, let him free him self from it, for indeed there is no Dinar nor Dirham [that someone takes without right] except that it will be taken from his good deeds and given to his brother, and if he had no good deeds, bad deeds will be taken from his brother and thrown upon him.”

Question 2342 : Panjtan-Pak Five Holy People Do sunni’s believe in the Pajtan-Pak (Five holy persons) who are Fatima-ElZorha (the prophets daughter), the prophet, Ali his brother in law, and the prophets two grand sons Hassan, and Hussien. Peace be with Answer:you. Dear Br. H. As-salaamu alaykum. Muslims believe in them and love all of the Ahl al Bayt i.e., the family of prophet Muham mad (peace be upon him). Many Sunni Mus lims call their children Mohammad, Fatima, Ali, Hassan, and Hussein for this reason and they pray to be with them in Heaven. But un like other groups, the Sunni Muslims dont give to these beloved people any aspect of Holiness and Sacredness that is not acceptable in Islam. Thank you for asking and God knows best.

[al-Bukhari & Muslim] “O Messenger of Allah (saw) I am de stroyed!” He said: “And what has destroyed you?” He replied, “I changed [the position] of my mount (wife) in the night!” The Mes senger of Allah (saw) did not answer him. lie (‘Umar) said: “Then this verse was revealed to the Mes senger of Allah (saw): Your wives are a tilth for you, so go in unto your filth as how and when you wish. The Ernst & Young report revealed that BC Housing failed to properly account for rising construction costs in its finances, putting future projects at risk. It also determined they failed to establish the resources, skills, and jurisdictional knowledge required to successfully deliver programs “Home prices and rents have skyrocketed under the NDP as this government has con sistently failed on its promises to make life more affordable for British Columbians and ignored the creation of adequate housing supply in our province,” added MLA Mike Bernier, BC Liberal Housing Critic. “De spite David Eby’s best attempts to down play his involvement and paper over the dysfunction within BC Housing under the NDP, we’ve still got this entire disaster be ing overseen by a minister with virtually no private sector experience. Unless the NDP indicates a change in direction and a will ingness to work on realistic solutions to the housing crisis we’re facing, British Colum bians can expect more of the same terrible results and empty promises from the NDP.”

Doctors are among those calling for tighter regu lation of sodium nitrite as a growing number of Canadians are dying after intentionally ingesting unsafe quantities of the common food preserva tive in its pure form. Sodium nitrite, not to be confused with naturallyoccurring sodium nitrate, is a synthetic curing salt. It’s commonly used to preserve meats, but can be lethal when ingested in certain doses. Fo rensic pathologists say people with intent to selfharm have been purchasing it online following advice found in pro-suicide forums for several years. Ontario saw at least 23 sodium nitrite poi soning deaths in 2019 and 2020, according to a study released in 2021 by scientists from the On tario Forensic Pathology Service (OFPS). Dr. Tyler Hickey, lead author of the study, told CTVNews.ca “almost all” of those deaths were ruled to be intentional. Hickey encountered his first death by sodium nitrite poisoning in 2019, while working as a forensic pathology fellow in “PriorToronto.to that time, I’m not sure I had any fa miliarity with these substances being used in this way,” he told CTVNews.ca. As a forensic pathologist, part of Hickey’s job is to monitor the ways people die, and then share that infor mation with pub lic health systems. “Noting that there appeared to be a newer and novel way people were ending their lives, I did a bit more reading around the topic and around those first couple cases,” he said, “and it was through that reading that I learned more about these support Thegroups.”earliest example Hickey found of an intentional death by sodium ni trite poisoning was recorded in New Zealand in 2010. In the United States, the National Poison Data System re corded 47 cases of sodium nitrite poi soning between 2015 and 2020, most of which occurred in 2019 and 2020. National figures for Canada are not available because this country does not collect national data from medi cal examiners, coroners or poison centres about sodium nitrite poison Froming. what he’s seen, though, Hickey believes the trend is growing. For several years, sodium nitrite has been promoted in pro-suicide online communities like the ones Hickey discovered, due to its availability via online vendors and consumer mar ketplaces like Amazon. Sodium nitrite is permitted as a food additive in Canada, and is subject to Food and Drug regulations to ensure it is in quantities that are safe for con sumption. However, Hickey believes lawmakers should weigh its value as an easily-accessed food preservative against its danger... Source: cbc.ca

B.C. Wildfire Service said newly created control lines are ‘holding well’ Crews battling the wildfire that has forced the evacuation of more than 500 properties in British Columbia’s southern Okanagan are taking advantage of calm winds and sta ble conditions to bolster fire lines. The B.C. Wildfire Service says the Keremeos Creek wildfire covers 68 square kilometres southwest of Penticton, with most of the re cent growth due to planned ignitions need ed to create the control lines. An update from the wildfire service says newly created control lines are “holding well.’’It says a key objective is to continue mop-up work along Highway 3A in an ef fort to reopen the route connecting Kere meos and the evacuated community of Olalla with towns further north. The wild fire service has recorded 564 blazes since the season began, 58 of them in the last seven days, and lists the fire danger rating as high to extreme on Vancouver Island, the entire B.C. coast and across the southern quarter of the province. Of the eight wildfires of note currently burning in the Kamloops and Southeast fire centres, only the blaze near Penticton con tinues to keep residents out of their homes. None of the other seven have grown signifi cantly in recent days, and the wildfire ser vice website says the three-square-kilometreroughlyfire in grasslands northwest of Kamloops is now listed as “be ing held,’’ allowing crews to finish building control lines. Wildfires of note are either highly visible or pose a threat to people or properties. Source: cbc.ca

Volunteering in an Emergency Support role would appeal to people who have flexibility in their schedule, enjoy helping others, are compassionate and wish to make a differ ence in their community. Having the ability to speak a second language would also be an “Whileasset. training is required for ESS volun teers, it can be done over time”, commented Shelley Morris. “The important thing now is to recruit people who are committed to this important work. This year has been rel atively quiet, but you never know when the next emergency will happen.”

Surrey, BC – The City of Surrey is actively recruiting for both on call Emergency Sup port Services (ESS) and Community En gagement volunteers for Fire Services. ESS volunteers provide short-term assis tance (up to 72 hours) to residents who are forced to leave their home because of fire, flood, earthquake and other emergencies. ESS volunteers work at a reception centre to provide short-term lodging, family reunifi cation, food, clothing and emotional sup “Whenport. a crisis hits our community, whether it’s large or small, we need many hands to help those in need. Having ESS volunteers ready to go is essential to helping our resi dents get back on their feet when disaster strikes”, said Shelley Morris, Assistant Chief, Surrey Fire. “During the pandemic, our vol unteer pool became depleted due to restric tions, so with fire season upon us, our goal is to get 100 volunteers in the next few months that we can draw on.”

“Sunlight is the best disinfectant and real reform starts with transparency,” conclud ed Falcon. “British Columbians deserve to know more details on the awarding of con tracts without criteria and the lack of a basic paper trail on property acquisitions. With a $2 billion budget being completely mis managed, we intend to hold David Eby and the NDP accountable for the smouldering mess they’ve created at BC Housing. As I’ve said repeatedly, the NDP mean well but just don’t know what the heck they’re doing.”

VICTORIA (August 8, 2022) – Follow ing the recent firing of the NDP-appointed board of BC Housing and the abrupt depar ture of the Crown corporation’s CEO, the BC Liberals are calling on the NDP to come clean about what’s going on at BC Housing, which has a budget of nearly $2 billion yet terrible results to show for it under David Eby and the NDP. “Rather than accepting responsibility for decisions made under his watch as hous ing minister, David Eby instead stealth ily fired the BC Housing board on a Friday evening, and then just three weeks later the CEO abruptly resigned without a credible explana tion for his decision. This government’s dismal track record of transparency has many British Columbians wondering what is actually happening with the NDP and BC Housing behind the scenes,” said BC Liberal Leader Kevin Falcon. “The Ernst & Young report which prompted these firings found serious and systemic failures with the NDP’s hous ing programs but ignores how Housing Minister David Eby, BC Housing, and its board failed to provide the most basic man agement oversight and competence. With homelessness and social disorder dramati cally increasing under this two-term NDP government — in addition to the fact that they’ve only opened 6.3 per cent of their promised 114,000 new affordable housing units — the public deserves answers and a guarantee the NDP won’t allow their incom petence and mismanagement of BC Hous ing to continue.”

The remarks from the military spokesperson come in the wake of “deeply insensitive” comments on social media, which Maj-Gen Iftikhar said hurt the sentiments of the heirs of martyrs of the chopper crash. The wreckage of the Pakistan Army helicopter that went missing in Balo chistan on the night of Aug 1 was found near Musa Goth in the Lasbela district a day later. “All 6 officers and soldiers including Lt Gen Sarfraz Ali embraced shahadat,” the media affairs wing of the armed forces had tweeted. The chopper was on flood relief operations in Lasbela, Balochistan when it lost contact with ATC [air traffic control]. The DG ISPR said his department also issued a press state ment earlier in the day rejecting “false prop aganda and insensitive comments by certain elements following the helicopter crash”....

ber how they facilitated the Bin Laden fam ily’s return to Saudi Arabia after 9/11?” Both thought that the United States had “enough power and technology to eliminate bad guys” and should use its power to “get rid of those bad guys”. Liz, a visitor from Virginia but not a veteran, however, said international poli tics was “much more complicated than these two understand”. “The use of power is im portant and necessary. But what’s even more important is to “understand the complexities of a dispute.” The United States, she added, “had to retaliate after 9/11, so we did. But we also lost our focus when we got involved in the Iraq war.” But all three agreed that “tak ing out Zawahiri was a good thing.”

Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General (DG) Major General Ba bar Iftikhar on Friday expressed strong disapproval of “false propaganda and in sensitive comments that erupted on social media” after six officials — including a corps commander — were martyred in a helicopter crash during flood relief efforts in Balochistan.“The way this happens on social media, we have to look into this and reject such elements involved in it,” he said on Geo News programme Naya Pakistan. “We can do this collectively. That’s why we issued a press release as it was important to highlight this matter. This has to be con demned at every level.”

Joe recalled how the then Virginia Governor Alexander Spotswood had to kill Blackbeard. Blackbeard, born in Bristol England in 1680, was a much-feared pirate who oper ated along the coasts of West Indies and the eastern shores of Britain’s North American colonies. Later in life, he gave up piracy and accepted a royal pardon. But had to be killed when he resumed his activities. “There’s no place for pirates in today’s world,” said Liz. “They need to understand that they cannot beat the governments anymore. They are too powerful.” When she learned that our group included Muslim journalists, she advised us to “edu cate your people on how raw power no longer works. If you need to be strong, build your economy.” After this brief discussion, we went to the sea, first near Hatteras Tower, which is considered a major achievement of modern engineering. Built in 1870 on a small island, in 1999 it was moved 2,900 feet southwest from its original location to save it from a collapse. The sea was rough and big. It was cool too, So, dipping in the water was pleasant on this hot summer day. But the big sea had no fish for us. “We could not even get fried fish at Ocracoke. We would have been happy with okra (bhindi) and Coke as well. But those were unavailable. We only got ice cream.”

Zawahiri discussed on Blackbeard’s islands

Monesa Mubarez is not going to give up the rights she and other Afghan women won during 20 years of Western-backed rule eas ily. Before the hardline Taliban movement swept back to power a year ago, the 31-yearold served as a director of policy monitor ing at the finance ministry. She was one of many women, mostly in big cities, who won freedoms that a former generation could not have dreamed of under the Taliban’s previous rule in the late 1990s. Now Mubarez has no job, after the Taliban’s strict interpretation of Islamic law severely limited women’s ability to work, required them to dress and act conservatively and closed secondary schools to girls across the country. Under the new government, there are no women in the cabinet and the Minis try of Women’s Affairs was shut down. “One war ended, but the battle to find a rightful place for Afghan women has started … we will raise our voice against every injus tice until the last breath,” said Mubarez, who is among the most prominent campaigners in the capital Kabul. Despite the risk of beatings and detention by Taliban members patrolling the streets in the weeks after the Western-backed government was toppled, she took part in several protests that broke out, determined to protect her hard-fought rights. Those demonstrations have died down — the last one Mubarez took part in was on May 10. But she and others meet in homes in private acts of defiance, discussing women’s rights and encouraging people to join the cause. Such gatherings would have been vir tually unthinkable the last time the Taliban governed Afghanistan. During one such meeting at her home in July, Mubarez and a group of women sat in a circle on the floor, spoke about their expe riences and chanted words including “food”, “work” and “freedom” as if they were at an outdoor rally. “We fight for our own free dom, we fight for our rights and status, we work for no country, organisation or spy agency. This is our country, this is our home land, and we have every right to live here,” she told Reuters. The country representative for UN Women in Afghanistan, Alison Da vidian, said stories like Mubarez’s are being repeated across the country. “For many women across the world, walk ing outside the front door of your home is an ordinary part of life,” she said. “For many Afghan women, it is extraordinary. It is an act of Whiledefiance.”rulesonwomen’s behaviour in public are not always clear cut, in relatively liberal urban centres like Kabul they often travel without a male chaperone. By: Anwar Iqbal OCRACOKE ISLAND: “Good riddance, al though we should not rejoice in a death, any death,” said a tall, rough man with two dogs when asked what he thought of the US deci sion to eliminate Ayman al Zawahiri. In Ocracoke, and in the nearby island of Hatteras, people paused to learn about how Zawahiri was killed by a US drone in Kabul before they resumed whatever Americans do during summer vacations — fishing, eating crab cakes and drinking beer. Ocracoke is where the much romanticised British-American pirate Blackbeard (Ed ward Teach) was killed on Nov 22, 1718. But people on this island still talk about him, as do the residents of Hatteras. He is the local hero. The man with the two dogs, who only gave his first name Joe, has “friends and rela tives who have served” in Afghanistan. That’s why he was keener than others to talk about the Afghan war. No nation can be powerful without strong economy “This is a good use of technology. Instead of sending our young men and women in harm’s way, we should let the machines do this job.” North Carolina, where the two islands are, is a big recruitment state for the US military, 4th after large states like California, Texas, and Virginia. So, it’s not difficult to find mili tary veterans here and since the Afghan war is the longest in the US history, it’s not diffi cult to find those who have served there and are willing to talk about the war. “Yes, it was a long war, and we should not have allowed it to drag on for so long,” said Shawn, one of those veterans. “It’s all politics,” said Joe, adding: “Remem

The month of August is extremely impor tant as Pakistan and India emerged on the world map during this month in 1947 and the British rule in the Indian sub-continent came to an end. Marking the birth anniver sary of both countries, author Nasim Yousaf has written an article entitled “Are the his tory books telling the truth about Mashriqi, Jinnah, & Gandhi?”. This article uncovers many truths and shatters myths. This piece is extremely important as the author brings forth information he learned not only from extensive research but from family and the Khaksars, who were both part of the free dom Pmovement.eoplearound the world have been made to believe that M.A. Jinnah created Pakistan, that M.K.Gandhi was the champion of India’s freedom, and that the British crushed Allama Mashriqi’s Khaksar Movement. The reality is that Al lama Mashriqi was a uniter working to keep India together, whereas Jinnah and Gandhi’s politics played into the hands of the rulers and ultimately resulted in partition. This piece addresses the falsehoods that have been spread with regards to Mashriqi and the other leaders’ role in India’s history. Most people don’t re alize that the British rulers would only ac cept an Indian leader who was willing to implement British policies. Anyone with knowledge of the past and how politics work would know that no Indian was allowed to enter the Viceroy’s Lodge or have his photos snapped with the rulers (with news flashed across the British controlled media), without agreeing to serve British interests. Allama Mashriqi was not someone who was willing to follow the British agenda. He founded the Khaksar Tehrik in 1930 to bring freedom to British India. By the late 1930s, Mashriqi had developed a massive following throughout India and the Tehrik had also formed branches in many other countries. The uniformed membership of the Tehrik in India alone was over “five million.” It had become the most disciplined and well trained private army in India. In 1939, upon Mashriqi’s orders, the Khaksar Tehrik successfully paralyzed the Govern ment of the United Provinces (UP) and Sir Harry Graham Haig (Governor of UP) had to sign an agreement with the Khaksar Tehrik just to normalize the situation. Dr. Shan Muhammad writes in his book Khaksar Movement in India, “It [the Khak sar Tehrik] became a most powerful organi sation towards the closing years of the thir ties and dominated the field…” At the peak, Mashriqi’s speeches regularly had 50,000 to 100,000+ attendees. With such power, Mashriqi moved forward and decided to topple British rule in 1940. This created panic in British circles. On March 19, 1940, a large number of Khak sars were murdered and Mashriqi, his sons, and followers were arrested. Khaksar ac tivities and publications, including the AlIslah journal, were banned / confiscated and thereafter the Government moved swiftly to arrest thousands of Khaksars in different parts of India. Mashriqi was imprisoned without a trial for nearly two years and his movements were then restricted for anoth er year; while in prison, Mashriqi and the Khaksars were tortured. But this suppres sion and brutality ultimately went against the rulers; Mashriqi’s following only grew larger and the freedom movement escalated to the next level. In a letter on March 21, 1940, Lord Linlithgow (Viceroy of India) wrote to Lord Zetland (Secretary of State for India) stating “how great a potential danger the [Allama Mashriqi’s] Khaksar Movement has become.” The correspond ence of the Viceroy, Provincial Governors and other high officials repeatedly showed that they feared the Khaksars. On June 6, 1941, Lord Linlith gow wrote to Cunningham (Governor of NWFP), “I felt quite clear after an exhaus tive discussion in Council that there was no alternative to the action [i.e. ban on the Tehrik all across India] which the Home Department have now asked all Provinces to take. I have always regarded this move ment as potentially a very dangerous one. It is well organized; well disciplined; and it works underground.” On July 19, 1941, Lin lithgow (Viceroy of India) again stated in a note to Hallett (Governor of U.P.) that he re mained “unshaken” on his perspective that the Tehrik was “a thoroughly dangerous or ganisation…”

And most of all, why are these birthdays still being celebrated on August 14 instead of August 15? The most important document in this regard is the Indian Independence Act of 1947, which was passed by the British Parliament and ratified by the British Emperor George VI on 18 July 1947. A copy of this law was sent to Quaid-e-Azam on 24 July 1947 by the Secretary-General of Pakistan, Chaudhry Muhammad Ali (who later became the Prime Minister of Pakistan). This law was enacted on page 234 of vol ume 12 of The Transfer of Power, a docu ment published by the British Government in 1983 and translated by Jinnah Papers published by Quaid-e-Azam Papers Project, Cabinet Division, Government of Pakistan, Islamabad. (Urdu translation of K) can be seen from page 45 to page 72 of volume III. This is clearly stated in the law.

By: Raba Noor, More than 74 years have passed since Pakistan became independent, and all along we have remained unaware of many aspects of our history. We celebrate our Independence Day on 14th August every year and our neighboring country India, which became independent with us, celebrates the same on 15th August every year and every year the question arises that the two countries which became inde pendent together on their Independence Day, why the difference of one day? The elders tell us that Pakistan became inde pendent on the 27th night of Ramadan and that the day Pakistan became independent was the happy day of Jumu’ah al-Wada ‘. Then we are told that this day was August 14, 1947, and we are one day older than the country that became independent with us. However, when we look at the calendar of August 14, 1947, it is known that this day was Thursday and Hijri date. It was not 27 but 26 Ramadan. Then we see the first stamps of Pakistan which were issued on July 9, 1948, 11 months after the independence of Pakistan. On these stamps, Pakistan’s Independence Day is clearly printed on August 15, 1947. Then we come to the conclusion that Pa kistan’s Independence Day is not 14 but 15 August 1947, then why the first anniversary of Independence Day was celebrated on 14 August 1948? Thus the mind is once again confused as to when Pakistan became inde pendent: on August 14, 1947, or on August 15, 1947. If we became independent on 14th August 1947 then why the date of Independence Day was written on the postage stamps is sued 11 months after independence on 15th August 1947 and if Pakistan became inde pendent on 15th August 1947 then we cele brated the first anniversary of independence on 15th August 1947. Why celebrate August 14, 1948, instead?

From 15 August 1947, two independent sover eign states will be established in British India, which will be named India and Pakistan re spectively. Later in the law, ‘these states’ means new states, and ‘fixed day’ means August 15 The original text on page 234 of Transfer of Power, Volume 12 is as follows: Here are a few more orders issued in con tinuation of this law, the excerpts and trans lations of which were published by Zia-udDin Lahori in his article ‘Independence Day: Happy Friday 27th Ramadan or 15th August’. Department of Writing, Compila tion and Translation has been included in Karachi University.

August 12, 1947 Excerpt from the press re lease of the Secretariat of the United Nations Memorandum on the Privilege of Member ship of India and Pakistan The Indian Independence Act states that on 15th August 1947, two independent states will be established in India under the names of India and Pakistan respectively. The British government announced that both Pakistan and India would be free at the same time, on 15 August 1947 at zero hours, but the problem was that Lord Mountbat ten visited India in New Delhi on the night between 14 and 15 August 1947. Was to de clare independence. The elected government was to transfer power and become the first Governor-General of independent India. The solution was for Lord Mountbatten to visit Karachi on August 13, 1947, and ad dress the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan on the morning of August 14, 1947, to com plete the transfer of power and announce that on that night, August 14 and 15. By the middle of 1947, Pakistan would become an independent state. So that’s what happened. On August 13, 1947, Lord Mountbatten visited Karachi and on the same night, dinner was given in his honor at the Governor General’s House in Karachi. Addressing the gathering, Muham mad Ali Jinnah said: I am very happy to suggest the health of the country. This is a very important and unique opportunity. Today, full power is about to be transferred to the people of India and on the appointed day of 15th August 1947, two independent and sovereign states Pakistan and India will come into being. This deci sion of the Prime Minister’s Government will achieve the lofty goal that was declared the sole purpose of the Commonwealth. The next day, Thursday, August 14, 1947, ac cording to the 26th of Ramadan 1366 AH, a special session of the Constituent Assem bly of Pakistan began at 9 am in the present Sindh Assembly Building in Karachi. Enthusiastic people had gathered in front of the building since morning. When Pakistan’s nominee for Governor-General Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Lord Mountbatten arrived in the Assembly Hall in a special carriage, the people greeted them with enthusiastic slo gans and applause. All the seats in the assem bly were full. The gallery was attended by a large number of prominent citizens, politi cians, and local and foreign journalists. The chair was presided over by the President of the Constituent Assembly, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, and next to him was Lord Mount batten. The operation was formally launched when the two dignitaries took their seats. First, Lord Mountbatten read out a message from the King of Britain, addressing Jinnah: “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to you on the great occasion of the formation of the new Commonwealth of Independent States of Britain. The way you have achieved free dom is an example of freedom-loving people all over the world. I hope that all members of the British Commonwealth will support you in upholding democratic principles. After the message, Lord Mountbatten deliv ered a farewell speech and prayed for the se curity of Pakistan and the Pakistani people. In his speech, Lord Mountbatten made it clear: “Today I am addressing you as your Vice roy. Tomorrow the reins of the new Domin ion Government of Pakistan will be in your hands and I will be the constitutional head of your neighboring Dominion of India. The leaders of both governments have invited me to be the neutral chairman of the Joint De fense Council, an honor I will strive to fulfill. Tomorrow, two new sovereign states will join the Commonwealth.

Veteran journalist Syed Shab bir Hussain also confirmed in his book (AlMashriqi) that “…Mashriqi was considered by the British as the most dreaded person in the sub-continent.” In other words, Mashri qi was not a man who would follow the Brit ish policies. By contrast, the British felt that Muhammad Ali Jinnah was someone who would follow their agenda. Unlike Allama Mashriqi, Jinnah and the All-India Muslim League had no popularity across India in 1940. They did not even have a presence in the Punjab province at the time. In fact, the Muslim League had suffered a crushing de feat in the 1937 elections. Since Jinnah and the Muslim League lacked popularity in 1940, they needed support from the British to gain relevance and would be more coop erative with the British agenda. On May 14, 1940, Viceroy Lord Linlithgow wrote a letter to Secretary of State Lord Zetland stating, “…Indeed, I am sure that Jinnah remains the man to deal with on the Muslim side [Gan dhi had already been selected as the man on the Hindu side]. Linlithgow further wrote “...Jinnah is our man and we accept him as a representative of all Muslims” (Khan Wali, Facts Are Facts: The Untold Story of India’s Partition). Linlithgow again would state that the Muslim League “is certainly, I should have said, not disloyal…” About the Author: Nasim Yousaf, a grandson and biographer of Allama Mashriqi, is a researcher based in the USA. Tourism is a focused area of the pre sent government. Several initiatives are being undertaken to garner the potential offered by the tourism indus try. To develop and enhance coordination with provinces, federal ministries, and pri vate actors, facilitate in the development of policies, strategies, framework, etc, to market and promote tourism potentials na tionally and internationally; and capacity building for the provision of quality human resource, the Government has constituted the National Tourism Coordination Board (NTCB). NTCB is mandated to:Coordinate with provincial, national and international organizations dealing with the tourism sec tor. Market and Promote tourism potential of Pakistan. Facilitate the provinces in de veloping a regulatory framework for quality standards in the Hospitality sector. Coordinate national participation in tourism related international expos and events. Develop synergies amongst provinces and regions. Provide Technical assistance to provinces to develop institutions in tourism sectors. As a part of the strategy, the NTCB formu lated following thematic working groups to develop strategies and action plans in their assigned specific areas: At its simplest, Pakistani cooking to day consists of staple foods which are cheap and abundant. Wheat and other flour products is the mainstay of the diet, one familiar form being CHAPATI, unleavened bread akin to a Mexican tortil la. This is made with dough prepared from whole wheat flour. Another basic food is LASSI, milk from which curds and butterfat have been re moved. Vegetables, usually seasonal, lentils are commonly used. Families with larger in comes eat more meat eggs, and fruits. And the more affluent cook with GHEE, which is clarified butter, instead of with vegetable oil. From the earliest times, the imaginativeand sometimes heavy - use of spices, herbs, seeds, and flavorings and seasonings have helped cooks transform rather ordinary sta ple foods into an exotic cuisine. Consider some of the most common of these in wide use in Pakistan today: chilli powder, turmeric, garlic, paprika, black pepper, red pepper, cumin seed, bay leaf, coriander, cardamom, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, saf fron, mace, nutmeg, poppy seeds, aniseed, almonds, pistachios, and yogurt. Their use in a wide range of pickles, chut neys, preserves, and sauces, together with curries of all descriptions and special treat ment for meats, sea, food, vegetables and lentils, gives Pakistani cooking much of its distinctive character. Cultural influences, whether religious pre cepts, practices, and ceremonies or local traditions, or even esthetic preferences, have made their contribution toward the evolu tion of Pakistani cuisine.

Pakistani’s Cuisines

Ceremonial occasions such as weddings have inspired a number of fancy dishes. A traditional dish at marriage feasts, for ex ample, is chicken curry with either PILAU or Biryani. Firini, made from cream of rice and milk, is an equally traditional wedding dessert. It is served in clay saucers topped by silver foil.

Food and The Moghul Emperors A style of cookery called Moghlai’ evolved at the Moghul court and even today it remains centered in Lahore. Some latter-day and widely known survivors of court cookery are, for example, chicken tandoori, a dish in which chicken is cooked at low tempera tures in special ovens called TANDOORS, and murgh musallum’ in which the whole chickens are roasted with special spices and ingredients. SHAHI TUKRA, a dessert of sliced bread, milk, cream, sugar and saffron, is another left-over from the days of the Mo ghuls. Fruit drinks, squeezed from pome granates, apples, melons, and mangoes, and called SHARBAT, are an important part of the Moghlai cuisine and, indeed, the inspira tion for American “sherberts.”

Bakerview is built on the grounds of a former gravel pit. Approximately 40 ft of gravel was mined from the site and then refilled with clean soil and clay. This leaves ideal, dry and well drained soil conditions for the cemetery. Geotechnical engineers have reviewed and signed off on the cemetery use of the property.

Burial Plots Now Available in Langley with Dedicated Section for Muslims

Bakerview is not licensed to provide funeral services. A licensed funeral home must transfer and prepare the body for burial. A licensed funeral director must be present at the cemetery at the time of the burial. Bakerview will coordinate its services with all funeral homes, including the BC Muslim Association’s funeral services team. To book a tour at Bakerview and make arrangements to purchase burial plots, please contact Patricia Adams at (604) 856 – 0330 or email patti@bakerviewmemorial.ca.

Bakerview has created a section of approximately 500 plots for Muslims that will help meet the specific needs of the community. Only 300 plots remain available for sale. This will be the only section available for Muslim burials from the first two phases of the project. Given several requests we have received for single depth burial, Bakerview has shifted its plans and will make provisions for single depth burials. Double depth burials will also be available, however, due to the fact we have a mix of burial types, we will not be able to presell and preinstall concrete liners. These will be available for purchase and installation at the time of burial as has been the normal practice for most cemeteries doing Muslim burials in Metro Vancouver. In April 2022, Bakerview received a Fatwa on both the validity of doing double depth burials and the process of doing double depth burials from Mufti Taha Masood and Mufti Aasim Rashid. Mo lana Zafar Abid has also reviewed and approved the use of double depth burials and has cited examples of their use in other places. For example, double depth burials are being done by Muslims in 920 272 Street, Langley, BC, V4W 2P8

Australia and the UK. They have been approved by Ulema in these regions. While new to BC, given the shortage of available land for burials in Metro Vancouver, we need to plan ahead and adopt the model set by these other land constrained jurisdictions. The pricing for burial plots is as follows:

*** For Weekend Burial Services Rate Add $500

Muharram 14,1444 August 12 ,202213

** Bakerview will provide those purchasing a single depth plot the op tion to purchase the right to convert to a double depth plot in the future by paying the difference between the price for a double depth plot at that time and what was initially paid for a single depth plot. We can accommodate both pre need purchases of burial plots and at need purchases. For at need purchases, the current cost of burial services are as follows: Bakerview Memorial Gardens is the Lower Mainland’s newest cemetery. It officially opened with its first burial in 2022. The cemetery is located in Langley at 920- 272nd Street.

* 25% of the sales price for all burial plots is remitted by Bakerview to a government mandated cemetery maintenance fund and held by a Bank in Trust. The bank is required by law to invest these funds and distribute any income from that investment for the perpetual maintenance of the cemetery grounds. The cemetery is not allowed to keep these funds.

21 Muharram 14,1444 August 12 ,2022 WOMEN/y O uth Why Are Muslim youth Confused? To be Continued in next edition

art, architecture, education, entertainment, and culture. It also explains why a great many Muslims build mosques, religious schools and other devout establishments, but, at the same time, build as many, if not more, “temples” of materialism, consum erism, secularism, modernism, and postmodernism in the forms of commercial, entertainment, media, sports, political, and cultural institutions and bodies. In the arena of education, Muslim youth are intended to end up extolling others and other people’s histories, traditions, cultures and civiliza tions, and to get alienated as much as possi ble form their own. The systems and person nel are carefully enacted and employed from within and without for the projected goals. Knowledge as power (scientia potentia est), education as the fundamental precondition for political development, empowerment, democracy and social justice, and education as the most powerful weapon which can be used to change the world, had to be divested from Muslims’ domain. Through knowledge and education, Muslims are not to liberate and enlighten themselves, but to enhance their subjugation and servitude to others. Wrong Methods for Teaching Islam It must be borne in mind that knowledge is one thing, and the methods of its delivery completely another. Neither can be accom plished without the other. When it comes to teaching Muslim youth about Islam, for mally or informally, the above precept ought to be most meticulously observed. We live today in the Information Age (Computer Age, Digital Age or New Media Age) where information and knowledge have become commodities that are easily available and are quickly and widely disseminated. We also live in the age of globalization which is dominated by systems of global or border less interaction, integration, competition, and connectivity.

What is a Will and Why is it Important ?

It is undeniable that a great many Muslim youth are disoriented and confused - some more than others - and the situation is getting worse by the day. Some cases yet morph into apostasy, either in relation to outward Islamic practice or its fundamental articles of faith. The phenomenon is so subtle that a person may not even be aware of what is happen ing and that he has been affected by the disease. The condition may be dubbed a “silent killer”, in that it develops slowly and its signs and symptoms are often ignored or misunderstood. This is unfortunate because Muslim youth signify the hope and future of Islam and Muslims. They are the actual wealth to be cherished and cultivated most. It would be suicidal to disregard and fail to accommodate their intrinsic aspirations and needs. The destiny of communities lies in the hands of their youth. Those communi ties which fail to realize this lack orientation, purpose and vision, and are soon ruined. Their youth then become their biggest liabil ity and burden. The entrenched inept structures and systems in such communities fear their youth most and their inherent vibrancy, enthusiasm, and passion. Thus, instead of being nur tured, optimized, and universally benefited from, they are often exploited and manipu lated. From the very beginning, youth are subjected to rigid socio-political and educa tional systems which aim to produce blindly loyal, albeit credulous and gullible, servants. Youth that critically think, question, and put forth alternative organizational or pro cedural models, do not represent a desired outcome of the said systems. Conversely, those communities which rec ognize that youth should be the building blocks of every constructive initiative and program, and that they should occupy the central place and play the pivotal role in the nation-building processes, are more vision ary, dynamic, and progressive. They offer more to the world than the advocates of the former Indeed, model.therelationship between the ad vancement of a community in all fields and the brilliance, as well as power, of its youth is causal, the latter always being the cause and

the former the effect. It is on account of this, that among the foun dational goals of maqasid al-shari’ah is the preservation of lineage or future generations (hifz al-nasl). Closely related is also the pres ervation of religiosity or faith (hifz al-din), of intellect (hifz al-‘aql), of life (hifz al-nafs) and of property or wealth (hifz al-mal). As the torch-bearers for their communities’ sustainable well being and future, the over all interests of youth, more than any other social category, are entailed in the notion of maqasid al-shari’ah. A society that strives to make accessible and affordable all types of good, such as proper education, employment, and means together with facilities for moral and spiritual devel opment, honors its youths and is an excellent society. Whereas a society that impedes or complicates access to good, but widely opens and facilitates access to all types of evil, such as intoxicants, drugs, prostitution, pornog raphy, corrupt entertainment, deficient edu cation, and economic systems, dishonors its youth. Such is a wretched society. The main causes of Muslim youth’s con fusion today are as follows: Improper Education

It is almost impossible to find in the Mus lim world an educational system that is at once comprehensive and integrative, in the sense that it combines and strives for excel lence in all fields of knowledge. No system adequately covers the total physical, intel lectual, moral, and spiritual development of Muslim youth. The approaches are always imbalanced, some segments of education, as well as life, being treated at the expense of the others. There is a never-ending tug-ofwar for supremacy between different edu cational philosophies, standards, and their Thestakeholders.processes are interchangeably branded as secularized, de-spiritualized, radical ized, dichotomous, traditionalized, mod ernized, etc. In the context of Malaysia, for example, Dr. Rosnani Hashim wrote about educational dualism whereby two mutuallyindependent systems upholding mutually exclusive and possibly contradictory educa tional philosophies operate simultaneously. Like most Muslim countries, Malaysia, too, grapples with this dual system of education. The biggest victim in the whole process, un deniably, is Muslim youth. They are torn be tween their treasured Islamic beliefs, tradi tions and values, and such as were imposed on them by means of education, with many not only contradicting, but also challenging the Muchformer.ofeducation in the Muslim world is based on, and is permeated with, foreign worldviews and values. Hence, Muslim young students find themselves repeatedly in a lose-lose situation. Their original reli gious education – regardless of its amount and intensity – and their built-in Muslim identity are not quite compatible with what is served to them in the name of education and progress. Their young, fragile, and inno cent minds and souls are no match for what is constantly hurled at them. Since the two perspectives are irreconcilable and, at the same time, neither could be dis posed of, Muslim students have no choice but to try to do the impossible and imbibe both the options. By:Ameera Shums ( Notary Public) What is a Will ? Wills are an important part of planning for your family’s future. A Will is a legal docu ment that says what you want done with your property and assets when you pass away. It outlines your wishes and acts as a map for those who you leave behind. Benefits of A Will Every adult who owns any assets, has a spouse, and/or minor children must have a will. Surprisingly, may people do not. Hav ing a will shows a clear statement of what you would like done for your property and the necessary care you wish for your loved ones. You retain control and say over your property and gives confidence to your loved ones as they will be acting out your wishes.

Knowing what your intensions and wishes are will save them a significant amount of stress, money, and provide peace of mind. Loosing a loved one is an emotionally and financially stressful time. It can be stressful paying for funeral costs, managing childcare, and providing for your dependents with no direction of how those costs will be reim bursed. It can also create issues within a fam ily as your wishes for distributing the estate is not known. Having a Will eliminates many of these stressful conversations and family disputes within your family. Preparing a will also gives you power to choose who will execute your wishes on your behalf. They are called an Executor and carry out the instructions written in your will. An other option is to appoint a Guardian who will care for your any of your minor children under the age of 19 after your death. It pro vides you with peace of mind while you are alive, so your loved ones do not have to deal with deciding many important decisions on your behalf while battling difficult feelings. Importance of Having a Will A Will in Canada is important as without a Will, you loose control over who takes care of your children and who gets how much of your estate and when. You give up rights on who takes care of your minor children. The court will need to appoint an Adminis trator for your estate and a guardian for any children you leave behind under the age of 19 if the other parent isn’t alive or able to provide any care. If no guardian is appointed, the Public Guardian & Trustee of British Co lumbia and Ministry of Children and Fam ily Development will become the children’s guardians. The costs to administer an estate without a will drastically increase compared to having your wishes known. These costs can create cash flow issues for your personal matters that might need to be paid and cause a delay for your beneficiaries to receive their share of the estate or any gifts. In addition, you lose the right to decide who will manage your estate after your death, who will take care of your children, and how your assets will be distributed. Without a Will, these important decisions will be made by the Government. If you have a spouse and no children, the estate passes to your spouse. If you have a spouse and children, then what passes depends on whether your children are also your spouses children. Wills are important in Islam as well, as mentioned in the Quran (Islamic Sharyat). Remember: Estate Planning is an impor tant and everlasting gift you can give your family. And setting up a smooth inheritance isn’t as hard as you think. Sometimes soon becomes never and this is a great opportu nity to handle loose ends while you still can.

‘Unity, Faith, Discipline’ / ‘Faith, Unity, Discipline’: Does the Sequence Matter youm e Istehsal and a blood stained Kashmir

Are some people more equal than others in the world of human rights? By: Fayyaz Baqir August 5 is named as Youm e Ist ehsal by the people of Kashmir to depict the forced annexation of Kashmir into Indian Union by the present government. It reminds us of a long trail of tyranny and bloodshed that unfolded in Kash mir due to the problematic trans fer of power from the British Raj to the people of the Indian subcontinent. When the British left India they agreed on a three-way division of India, areas where the Muslim league gained the major ity of provincial assemblies seats went to Pakistan, areas where the Congress gained the majority of provincial assembly seats went to India and 500 princely were given the freedom to remain independ ent or accede to India or Pakistan. This mutually agreed principle was violated in Punjab. The Punjab As sembly was divided into Muslim and non-Muslim chambers and each chamber was asked to vote separately. Even then the majority of Punjabi members of the assem bly voted for Pakistan. But then, contrary to any prior agreement it was decided that Punjab will be di vided, and the majority of Muslim districts would go to Pakistan and the majority of non-Muslim dis tricts would go to India. Even this principle was violated in marking the boundaries of the newly inde pendent countries of India and Pa kistan. The district of Gurdaspur which was a majority Muslim district was handed over to India, and it provided India a passage to Kashmir-a majority Muslim statewhich was an independent prince ly state at that time. Accession of Kashmir was an ex plosive issue. While the major ity of the population of Kashmir was Muslim, the ruler of Kashmir was a Hindu. The raja of Kashmir decided to accede to India after the partition. An armed conflict followed this unjust decision in Kashmir. To resolve the conflict the matter was taken to the United Nations by the government of Pa kistan and the UN Security Coun cil passed a resolution asking for a plebiscite to decide the status of Kashmir based on the Kashmiri’s right to self-determination. Indian government continued denying this democratic right to the people of Kashmir. Due to popular resist ance against accession to India, the Indian government gave an inter nal autonomy status to the govern ment of Kashmir. This was not ac ceptable to the people of Kashmir and led to militant resistance to end the Indian occupation.

5 August 2022 marks the third year of the revocation of the special sta tus of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJ&K). This is in continuation of a direct assault on Kashmiri culture and identity, the rapid expropriation of land, heightened economic mar ginalization, and the accelerated forces of settler-colonialism. Pa kistan has always expressed soli darity with the people of occupied Kashmir and upheld their right to self-determination in accord ance with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Coun cil. These resolutions of 1948 and 1949 call for the holding of a free and impartial plebiscite for the determination of the future of the state by the people of Jammu and Kashmir and make it mandatory for India to safeguard and main tain the historical, ethnic, cultural, and demographic status of Jammu and Kashmir in its Constitution.

• Gives govt six days to dissolve assemblies, announce polls

Actions taken by the government of India on 5th August 2019, in Indian occupied Jammu and Kash mir have led to huge demographic changes as the Indian government is systematically paving the way for settler colonialism in Kashmir.

Introduction/Background

The concept ‘Unity (Ittehad), Faith (Yaqeen) and Discipline (Nazm)’ was given by the Quaid as Eid mes sage on 19 October 1941 to Mus lims of the sub-continent. “I have no doubt that with unity, faith and discipline we will compare with any nation of the world” were the words reiterated with the same message by Mohammad Ali Jin nah three month after independ ence in December of 1947 as per Zamir Niazi in his book The Web of Censorship. Becoming the na tion’s motto in 1948 while being in scribed in the state’s emblem there has been immense disagreements in the sequence of the words. Till 70’s, the order was maintained but with Zia’s coup d’état the word ‘Faith’ was put before ‘Unity’ and ‘Unity, Faith, Discipline’ became ‘Faith, Unity, Discipline’. During this research, there is no mention of this switch during Zia’s time from 1977 to 1988. How Jinnah’s Motto was Misrepresented Hamid Jalal — an ex-civil servant and parent of acclaimed archivist cum author Ayesha Jalal — men tioned… “Jinnah’s ‘Unity, Faith and Discipline’ had been present ed as ‘Faith, Unity and Discipline’ during the early eighties. Andrew Small also mentions the same in his writing Asia’s New Geopolitics that Zia immediately altered the order of words. Whereas Quaid as Governor General exclaimed “It is up to you to work, work and work and we are bound to succeed and never forget our motto, ‘Unity, Discipline and Faith!’” in his first broadcast from Lahore on August 31. Perhaps, it was Zia’s effort to le gitimize his reign with a theocratic outlook which was also expressed by late Sibte Hasan in his article in 1983 Urdu monthly Jido-Jehed (The Struggle). Implication of the Alteration Pakistan was created to be a Plurastic society as per the dream of Iqbal and efforts of the Quaid along with his vision. The Doc trine behind their efforts was de clared in the words… “you are free to go to your worship places…” hence it is safe to state that the aim was to generate an inclusive soci ety and not an exclusive one. But sadly, by putting the word ‘Faith’ before ‘Unity’ extrapolates the fact in Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Muslims remain numero uno citi zens above the rest and every other individual is a second-grade citi zens. This reversal of words relates to deep-rooted implications which have perpetual negative effects in a society where universal values of ‘Equality, Liberty, Fraternity’ have already taken a backseat. As per Clausewitz… Strategic errors be come Tactical blunders… of which we have been a witness to in the state of Pakistan where society has become more inequal rather than equal as per the Islamic teachings. The people in power can take the first step to correct this by putting the ‘UNITY, FAITH, DISCIPLINE’ in order on the roadside hillock of Islamabad Expressway (Pakistan).

Pakistan has proposed a trilateral arrangement to bring the Kashmiri people to the nego tiating table along with India and Pakistan. Kashmiris call upon the world to condemn India’s illegal settlement and colonization of IIOJK and insist upon compliance with India’s international legal ob ligations. At present approximate ly, 900,000 Indian troops have be sieged the defenceless Kashmiris and thousands of people in IIOJK have been killed by Indian forces in custody and subjected to extra judicial executions and enforced disappearances. India has commit ted these human rights violations with absolute impunity. Kashmiris wonder why the world commu nity is a silent spectator on this long brutal act of colonization. Are some people more equal than oth ers in seeking their human rights?

The discussion requires here, why to go back to old situations again. Every new day is there to correct oneself and think better about the past. My apologies for this statement as I don’t agree with this. May Allah bring prosperity and peace to the country with healthy politi cal competition without personal characteri zations. The push and pull can be witnessed in the current political situation, where simulta neously three major parties i.e. PTI, PML-N, and PPP can be seen addressing large gather ings in different cities to prepare their voters. The scenario of the election campaign is being made which is a positive sign for expected up coming elections. As such, the elections are not announced of ficially. According to the President of PML-N, Mariyum Safdar, the elections will be decided by Nawaz Sharif from London. It is seen re cently that PML-N key leadership also visited London on an official trip to discuss the po litical situation with their leader Nawaz Sha rif. It was expected the new government to announce its policies and relief packages for the citizens to give a little comfort from infla tion instead of vis iting abroad. The goods’ prices are seen raising day to day, and comforta ble relief packages are not seen to be introduced soon. The focus is seen on campaigns in stead of releasing any firm policies and packages. Is the cur rent situation heading towards the forma tion of an interim government? If this hap pens, it will be good to blow the fire and take the country to a neutral stance through the election via an interim neutral government. Pakistan has inherited a democratic politi cal system from its past but has been unable to show or adopt a democratic culture. In fact, Pakistan has inherited a democratic political system from its past but has been unable to show or adopt a democratic cul ture. The reason behind this is injustices and authoritarian policies where the question ing of democratic values, and policies are weakened behind the powerful voices. It’s a tug of war culture in Pakistani politics and whosoever puts his effort or raises his voice, the continuous struggle will be required to take the stance forward. The new government is seen taking aggres sive steps against criticism through journal ists who have raised their voices in favour of Imran Khan’s taken step not to bow in front of outsiders on receiving an official letter from the US. In the current situa tion, the prominent issues that emerged and should be tackled immediately are politi cal polarization, press freedom, and rights, institutional harmony, performances, poli cymaking, directiveness, national security, peace, and perceptiveness instead of seri ous personal characterization. It is seen that the current dollar rate is Rs.194.7 after the change of government in the interbank market which was Rs 184 in April in the last govern ment, according to the State Bank of Pakistan. However, the raised charges are seen for freight, petroleum, and food items especial ly wheat, sugar, oil, spices, tea, pulses, etc. The recent war of Ukraine-Russia in this re gard has left a deep impact on food items as South Asian countries are mostly dependent on staple food that is wheat from Ukraine and due to blockage of routes, the delivery is disturbed. The new government has seri ous issues to deal with and has to introduce relief packages for the masses. Worldwide food prices are raised and also affected the domestic prices such as soybean oil import increased by 101.96 pc in value and 9.30pc in quantity in 10MFY22 within a year, and wheat import fell 19.12pc to 2.206 million tons in 10MFY22 which was 3.61m tonnes in 10MFY21. In April, there was no wheat import due to the war crisis. On the political front, the recent energetic crowds at Imran Khan’s gathering show the support worldwide for his stance and no compromise on the national security and involvement of external forces in the inter nal politics of Pakistan. Appreciation for his straightforwardness and no compromise on these terms. A popular slogan “absolutely not” has been taken widespread. May Al lah keep our country safe and on the pros perous path. Wishing all political parties a healthy competition without compromising national integrity and security. Addition ally, Pakistan Army is always been a strong pillar for our country and time to time re leases the statements to keep it away from the current politics. Prayers for this insti tution’s stability and status as had it always and will be there in the future also. The writer is a columnist, researcher, and Adjunct Asst. Pakistan’s Exports

Dr Saira Asad In the 2018 elections, Pakistan Tehreek-eInsaaf (PTI) was termed by opposition po litical parties as a “selected”government. In 2022, the same situation is seen where 13 parties made every effort to oust the govern ment of PTI, and eventually, by Vote of NoConfidence, a coalition government under the premiership of Shahbaz Sharif is formed. Here, the term “selected” takes a different in terpretation by the current government. The new government is taking the meaning of enjoying the mandate of the majority people, whereas, in “Naya” Pakistan, the Army was claimed by the opposition to be a part in the formation of the government back in 2018. Per Bilawal Bhutto after winning the confi dence vote in the parliament, he welcomed all by saying “welcome to poorana Pakistan.”
