If successful, the legal manoeuvre could make the owners of approximately 400 trucks and tens of thousands of donors financially liable for a share of $300 million in damages the lawsuit claims. Lawyer Paul Champ first filed the litigation in February, naming public servant Zexi Li, who lives in downtown Ottawa, as a representative of a class of residents who claim they suffered from the noise and disruption caused by hundreds of trucks parked on city streets for three Continue at page 5

On the authority of Abu Harayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace be upon him), who said: Allah (mighty and sublime be He) said:Spend (on charity), O son of Adam, and I shall spend on you. It was related by al-Bukhari (also by Muslim). Hadith Qudsi 11:

Allowance for Movement in Salâh: An Explanation Based on Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalâni’s Fath Al-Bâri

By: Omar Abdl-Haleem

A

L-AZRAQ IBN QAYS said: “We were in Al-A Hwâz [a district near Al-Ba sra, between present day Irâq and Iran] fighting the Harûrîyyah [the Khawârij, who fought against Hzt Alî(RA). They were called Harûriyyah because their initial base was in Harûrâ’, a now defunct village in present day Iraq.] I was at the banks of a river, and there was an [old] man praying [making salâh] and holding the reins of his beast in his hand [as he prayed]. The beast began to tug on its reins. Thus [as it moved] the man followed it [moving with it, but not breaking his salâh].” Shuhbah [one of the narrators of this hadîth] said: ‘The man was [the Companion] Abû Barzah Al-Aslamî.’ “So one of the men of the Khawârij began saying: ‘O Allah! Punish this old man!’ So when the elderly man finished his salâh, he said: ‘Truly, I have heard what you people were saying; and, truly, I went forth with the Messenger of Allah on six, or seven, or eight of his campaigns [it is the narrator who is uncertain of the number of campaigns stated by Abû Barzah]. Thus have I witnessed how he made things easy [for people, in the practice of their religion]. Hence, for me to move with my beast [during my salâh] is more beloved to me than letting it wander where it desires, thereby bringing hardship upon myself [in having then to catch it].’”

Explanation

At that time, in the year 65 h , Al-Muhallab ibn Abî sufrah was the general leading the fight against the Khawârij [lit. “the Outsiders,” for they left the companionship of the Ummah of Islam by way of secession, and by way of their extreme ideological understandings and interpretations of religion, and subsequent aberrant practices]. The Khawârij had laid siege to Al-Basra with Nâfi ibn Al-Azraq at their head and a number of prominent Muslims of Al-Basra were killed before Ibn Al-Azraq was eventually killed. This siege continued until Abdullâh ibn Al-Zubayr Al-Makhzûmî became the governor of Al-Basra and appointed Al-Muhallab to lead the fight against the Khawârij. This history presents a problem for those who claim that the Companion Abû Barzah passed away in the year 64h because the fighting took place in the year 65h. Some scholars hold that the Companion at the center of this badîth was performing salâh, not on the banks of a river, but in the dried-out riverbed of where the river used to run. Others say that he was in the shade of the citadel of Mahrân on the banks of the River Dujayl. Other narrations indicate that the narrator told Shubah that the man who was praying was Abû Barzah, which is how Shubah came to know this detail. The occurrence was at the time of the Asr salâh.

These narrations give added detail to what the man from the Khawârij actually said. That is to say, he cursed the Companion and said: “Look at this ass! Look how this old man left his salâh for his horse!” The doubt the narrator of this hadîth had about the number of campaigns that Abû Barzah participated in with the Prophet is specified in another narration as seven campaigns.

Reflections

1: The Companion mentioned to the man from the Khawârij: “I witnessed how he [the Prophet] made things easy [for people, in the practice of their religion].” His meaning is that the approach of the Prophet in imparting the religion of Islam to people was characterized by flexibility in all the affairs of religion. Nor is it coincidental that the disagreement between the Companion and the man from the Khawârij centered upon a matter that pertained to flexibility in religion, for the problem of the Khawârij, and their modern-day ideological descendants, is their puritanical and rigid practice and understanding of religion. This kind of extreme ideological understanding and outlook runs counter to the very nature of Islam as it was revealed. 2: In another narration, the narrator adds that he (Al-Azraq ibn Qays) responded to the Khawâriji man saying: “I see nothing, save that Allah will debase you! You insulted a man who is a Companion of the Messenger of Allah!” Thus we learn that to speak ill of any Companion of the Prophet (SAW) is sinful, unacceptable, and may lead to one’s destruction in this life and in the Hereafter. 3: There are benefits to be taken from this Hadîth. a: It is permissible for a person to speak of their virtues if the situation necessitates it and if the speaker is not boasting. b: There is no room for puritanical extremism in Islam. The proof that this mentality is possible among Muslims is that no person was good enough for the Khawârij. It is a not a state of religion, but a sickness, wherein a person finds fault with everyone and everything. 4: It is legally permissible in fiqh, Islamic Law, for one to take actions in their salâh that are necessary for the protection of self or wealth (against damage, loss, or theft). This being lawful, then it is of even greater legal permissibility—rather, it is an obligation—for a person to protect human life, even if they are in a state of salâh, such that they, for example, would call out to a person: “Watch out for the hole in front of you!” 5: It is a characteristic of a Muslim, a believer, to care for wealth and property because it prevents waste—for lack of care for property equals wastefulness, and in Islam squandering is a greatly hateful act. 6: Other narrations show that when Abû Barzah, the Companion, moved with his beast during salâh, he never turned away from the qiblah. Had he done so, his salâh would have been broken, and he would have had to restart a new make-up salâh, for facing the qiblah is a condition for the validity of the salâh. Yet while it may be permissible to move in situations such as this, still the normative state of affairs is that movement in

Ask the Imam (Q&A) The state gave him a student loan; can he buy food and other things he needs with it?

Question 147640:

I looked on your site for an answer to my question, and I did not find anything that was sufficiently similar to it. I took out a loan from the government to cover study expenses a few years ago, with the intention of working and paying back the loan, but I am still a student, so they will not charge me any interest on the loan so long as I am still studying. But I am looking for work that I will be able to do whilst still studying. But if I cannot find such work, I have another option, which is extending my study until I am able to pay off the loan. The government has also added another amount to the loan for living expenses. Is it permissible for me to use this money for things that I somewhat need (and they are not luxuries)? For example, when I am near a store and I feel hungry only (but there is no desperate need), is it permissible for me to buy (halal) food with this money? Supervised by Shaykh Muhammad Saalih al-Munajjid

Answer:

Praise be to Allah.

There is nothing wrong with buying what you mention of food with this money, without neglecting any of your study for which this loan was given. But if you spend on that from the other money that is for living expenses, that is more appropriate. You should strive to finish your studies and not make it lengthy for the purpose of delaying payment of the loan, or until you are able to pay it off, because delaying it is wasting time and means that you will remain for too long overseas and take money inappropriately. If we assume that the state will ask for interest after you have completed your studies, you do not have to pay anything except the capital, then you should strive to avoid paying interest. And Allah knows best. Source: islamqa.info/en/answers

prayer should be restricted to the minimum. 7: In another hadîth in Bukhâri, the Prophet instructed his Companions that, if they felt the need to flatten the ground before them in salâh to ease and perfect their bowing to the ground in prostration, in sujûd, they could pass their hands upon the ground once in their place of sujûd, and suffice themselves with that one smoothing. This means that it is not permissible to perform any actions in the salâh that are not necessary, for the state of tahrîm (sacredness in the salâh) is an inverse of the state of tahlîl (permissibility) outside of the salâh. So, outside of the salâh, all actions are considered permissible, unless proven to be forbidden. However, within the salâh, since it is a form of worship, all actions and speech are considered forbidden, unless there is proof for the permissibility of actions and words.

8: The character of the Companions was built upon the foundation of Revelation: the Quran and the Sunnah. Hence, this sahâbî— whose station in comparison to any other Muslim who is not a Companion is greater than the station of a father to a son—did not respond to insult with insult. Nor did he retaliate for himself, even though he was an older man, and thus deserving of veneration, in addition to his status as a Companion, while the insulter who called him an ‘ass’ was younger—and was not even a Companion, to boot. Yet Abû Barzah restricted his response to the defense of the Dîn, the Religion, of Allah. How many a lesser man among us would respond with far greater outrage for much less verbal violation of their person? Source: https://www.aljumuah.com/

Bridge to nowhere

A

BRIDGE not linked to any road gets one nowhere. Our stagnant politics resembles one even if it is now in uncharted terrain, with huge turmoil upending old political patterns. However, big political transitions follow deep societal change. One sees much change at first sight — the youth bulge, urbanisation, social media use. But deeper structures remain stagnant: low-growth, patronage economy; extremism and hierarchy. Flux, it appears, outpaces deep change. Pakistan’s political changes encompass at least six axes: class, ethnicity, faith, regions, institutions and political brands. It has been pointed out that the country had its roots in the concerns of landed, business and middleclass Muslim elites in mostly Hindu central India about their fate under Hindu rule. Their politics was ethno-populist: built on ethnic elite fears and without ideas on how to make society fairer for the poor. After 1947, West wing middle classes in the military, bureaucracy and courts tamed politicians to impose dour elite politics built on populist faith and patriotism. Defiance soon came from leftist ideological and Baloch, Bengali, Pakhtun and Sindhi ethno-ideological parties (ethnic politics plus strong ideas to make society fairer), which the state nixed.

Bigger defiance came in the 1970s from the PPP, led by a Sindhi landlord who mixed ideology and populism. Pindi’s excesses and later co-optation made the PPP shed its ideology and defiance to adopt what many say is corrupt patronage politics. Elite defiance came from Punjab business elites too under the PML-N which, lacking a pro-poor ideology, is seen to follow corrupt patronage and mild ethno-populist politics in reaction to anti-Punjab urges. Having seen the establishment’s actions for long, it is now eyeing re-co-optation. The establishment also co-opted religio-populist parties and the MQM-led ethno-populism of urban Sindh middle-class elites. How is the current flux affecting the six axes? Leftist ideology and older Baloch, Pakhtun and Sindhi ethno-ideology are now moribund even though ethnic and class gripes exist. South Punjab has ethnically motivated complaints too but still lacks ethnic parties. Newly emerging ethno-ideological groups are still small. The iffy politics of religious parties and the MQM’s ethnopopulism have lost big time too. But extremism and Mohajir grievances survive. They, like earlier groups, could rebound. The PPP’s ideological and even patronage politics is largely done and dusted in KP and Punjab but is secure in more isolated rural

Sindh where it also partly calms emotions of an ethnic nature. However, a divided, rudderless PML-N’s patronage and ethnopopulist politics in a changing Punjab faces strong headwinds.

The losses of many forces have been the PTI’s gain.

While it is upending many controversial political forces, the party itself has combined many of these forces’ worst traits. The establishment’s security and autocratic lens, PDM’s patronage politics, MQM-type populism and religious extremism. Yet its gains are very tenuous, given its odd mix of cultist-cum-electable politics without an ideology, an aging leader with no clear successor, a weak mid-tier leadership and grassroots presence, poor ties with Pindi and all key foreign allies, and huge misrule. After the PML-N’s centrist business elite-led and PPP’s leftist landed elite-led ones, the PTI poses a middle-class elite challenge to the establishment but from its right. However, success may elude it too. So the upper classes (the PPP and PML-N) use bad patronage politics that gives some crumbs to the poor. But the middle classes (the MQM, PTI and TLP) give even worse populist politics. Thus, the middle classes in state entities and now in politics are the most to blame for making politics irrelevant to the needs of the masses. Courtesy by: Dr Niaz Murtaza The writer is a political economist with a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. What do you think?

The judiciary apparently loves its powers to nix laws and even executive actions at will, to the detriment of the government. But the establishment has seen big losses. Ties with old patron America and jihadists like the Taliban are now tense. A stormy tiff with the PTI has robbed it of a pampered middle-class soulmate and many faithful social media trolls, TV anchors and middle-class allies. Yet while saying it is non-political, it is still perceived as calling the shots even though PDM relies less politically on it than the PTI. Clarity on its political intents may emerge soon under a new head. But old habits may die hard even if options are reducing. All these losses have been PTI gains. Led by middle-class elites, it follows iffy cultist, religio-populist, anti-West politics. We have never had a big national religious party given sectarian divides. The PTI, perhaps the most religious party after the openly religious ones, is now close to being that as Khan’s va gue religiosity ap peals across sects and regions Laysa Lil Insana illa ma’ sa’aa and lets people feel religious That man can have nothing while avoiding stricter tenets. but what he strives for.

Dennis Chimich told the courtroom that just because there wasn’t any bone damage, it “doesn’t mean that his foot wasn’t run over.” McCallum is accused of falsely reporting to police that a driver ran over his foot in a grocery store parking lot in September 2021. During cross examination, the prosecution argued the laws of physics, and suggested Chimich’s report on McCallum’s foot failed to consider calculations like mass and force.“Did you calculate the force?” asked prosecutor Richard Fowler. “No,” responded Chimich. Next came questions about whether wearing shoes and socks might affect the outcome of Chimich’s

report, or the speed of the car. “You didn’t calculate the speed of the vehicle?,” questioned Fowler. “No,” Chimich replied again. Biden warns of windfall tax on ‘war profiteering’ oil companies

US president criticises oil companies for making record profits amid the RussiaUkraine war, warns of higher tax. US President Joe Biden has criticised oil and gas companies for recording big profits after crude prices surged following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Biden, speaking ahead of the November 8 mid-term elections, warned that if leading oil companies do not invest some

of their profits to lower costs for American consumers, they could face a windfall tax. US rivals Chevron and ExxonMobil have reported profits in the range of $70bn this year, almost a three-fold increase from 2021. Biden said on Monday the record profits were a “windfall from the brutal conflict that is ravaging Ukraine and hurting tens of thousands of people around the globe”. “It’s time for these companies to stop war profiteering, meet their responsibilities in this country and give the American people a break and still do very well,” he said. The president also issued a warning that companies could face “a higher tax on their excess profits and face other restrictions”. With the mid-term elections a week away, Biden’s comments have been viewed as an attempt to address voters who have faced persistently high inflation. Source: aljazeera.com

Netanyahu poised to win Israeli election, exit polls show

Former prime minister well placed for comeback as his right-wing bloc projected to win slim majority. Former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared well placed to return to power after exit polls following Tuesday’s election showed his right-wing bloc heading for a narrow majority, lifted by a strong showing from his far-right allies. Israel’s longest-serving premier, on trial for corruption charges that he denies, was poised to take 61-62 seats in the 120-seat Knesset, according to Israeli television exit polls. Caretaker Prime Minister Yair Lapid’s centrist Yesh Atid party was on track for its expected second-place finish, with projections giving it between 22 and 24 seats. The early exit polls may differ from the final result of the election, which is not expected until later in the week. But the results pointed to a stronger-than-expected showing by the right.

Following his uncontested run at the top job, Rishi Sunak acquires the less-than-coveted title of second successive un-elected British prime minister to take office in 2022. However, coming from Punjabi heritage, he also takes on the more esteemed title of the nation’s first British Asian leader. Sunak was born in the southern English port city of Southampton in 1980. His fa-

ther, Yashvir, was a family doctor and his mother, Usha, a pharmacist. They were born and brought up in present-day Kenya and Tanzania, respectively, before moving to the UK. Sunak’s grandparents on both sides were from India and had migrated to East Africa. Indians share a long history with African traders in the Indian Ocean region – links that were strengthened in the 19th century. During the time of the British empire, and especially following the creation of the East African Protectorate (also known as British East Africa) in 1885, many Indians migrated to the region, which was then under British control. The Indian population grew rapidly and prospered economically. Many Indian immigrants and their descendants remain in East Africa today, but significant numbers left in the second half of the 20th century... Source: theconversation.com

Shireen Abu Akleh: US activists slam ‘impunity’ for Israeli abuse

Advocates say US should not allow Israel to investigate itself for killing of second American citizen this year. Washington, DC – The US Department of State often says that it “has no higher priority than the safety and security of US citizens abroad”. But on Wednesday morning, Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh became the second American this year to be killed by Israel – a top recipient of US military aid and Washing-

ton’s closest ally in the region. Department of State spokesperson Ned Price was quick to condemn the killing and call for an investigation, but later in the day, he confirmed that Washington trusts Israel to investigate itself and would not call for an independent probe. Ahmad Abuznaid, executive director of the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights, said calls for investigations are “empty gestures” if the probe is to be left for Israel. “You can’t ask the Israelis to investigate themselves when they’ve been abusing human rights for over 70 years and expect them to arrive at a different result that they’ve been arriving at after all these decades,” Abuznaid told Al Jazeera. “These are atrocities that the international community has witnessed time and time again – whether recorded on live footage or not – and we have never seen accountability.” Source: aljazeera.com

US woman sentenced to 20 years for leading all-female ISIL unit

US prosecutors describe Allison FlukeEkren, a Kansas mother and former teacher, as the ’empress of ISIS’. A US judge has sentenced a Kansas woman who led an allfemale ISIL (ISIS) battalion in Syria to the maximum sentence of 20 years in jail, after Allison Fluke-Ekren pleaded guilty to “terrorism” charges earlier this year. During a hearing in federal court in northern Virginia on Tuesday, Fluke-Ekren said in a lengthy speech that she took responsibility for her actions but spent most of the time rationalising and minimising her conduct. “We just lived a very normal life,” she told the judge about her time in Syria, showing pictures of her children at a weekly pizza dinner. Prosecutors described Fluke-Ekren as the “empress of ISIS”, accusing her of training women and girls as young as 10 on

how to use automatic weapons and detonate grenades and suicide belts. Authorities say the 42-year-old also discussed carrying out attacks inside the United States. After being captured in Syria, Fluke-Ekren was brought to the US in late January to face charges. Source:aljazeera.com

come closer to their deen via social media platforms. It was wonderful to see a lot of businesses coming together and sponsoring this event and giving back to their community. Lots of donors also came forward to help MFBCS raise over $100,000 which will go towards sustaining the organizations’ operation costs. The room was filled with beautiful art pieces which were sold at the silent auction with some of the funds going towards the upcoming artists who are also struggling towards self-reliance. Many happy faces were spotted at the end of the night from individuals taking home their winning art pieces. MFBCS has, of course, played a significant role in the community for the last

12 years. In attendance were many members of the Surrey community, united in their support for this important organization. The fundraising dinner was also attended by local Surrey MLA, including the Honourable Bruce Ralston, and Surrey Center MP Randeep Sarai. All expressed their support and appreciation for the work of MFBCSS. The fundraising dinner also provided an opportunity to celebrate the volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure the important work of the organization continues – from serving over 11,000 food hampers annually through its food bank arm, to the programming provided through its community services arm, ASPIRE. Through case workers to work one

on one with families, employment and language support, youth programming, addictions assistance, MFBCS truly serves its clients in a holistic way. Starting from a volunteer’s garage, MFBCS has grown substantially in the last 12 years. Thanks to the generosity and support of the community, MFBCS continues to empower members of our community both physically and mentally. MFBCS is constantly looking to grow in cities across Canada and internationally and help in different ways and is always looking for volunteers, and donations are always welcome – please visit www.muslimfoodbank.com to learn more.

n Oct 29, Al-Ihsān Educational Foundation held a book launch event with Mufti Aasim Rashid for the recently published book, “Obeying the Messenger.” The event took place at the Al-Ihsān Centre in Surrey and consisted of book reflections, readings, and signings. This book was written by the late erudite scholar and spiritual mentor, Shaykh al-Hadith Maulana Yusuf Motala (rah). Maulana Yusuf Motala (rah) founded the renowned Darul Ulum at Holcombe, Bury, UK, in 1973. This institute became the first of its kind in the western world and produced hundreds of Ulamās and Huffās. Here he taught all levels of students for decades, eventually devoting himself to teaching hadith till the end of his life. He also established and oversaw

numerous additional institutions across the UK and other countries through graduates and alumni of Darul Uloom. He was a mentor and elder to scholars and a spiritual guide for thousands of people in Europe and abroad. This book, originally written in Urdu over 50 years ago, “Itaa’a al-Rasool,” was the first book Shaykh Yusuf authored. Two key factors contributed to Shaykh Yūsuf starting this book. The first was a dream in which he was directed to do some work related to the necessity and obligation of obeying the Messenger (SAW). The second was the emphatic instruction of his shaykh, Maulana Zakariyya Kandhalvi (rah), “It is my sincere instruction to you that you must not spare any effort in propagating the lifestyle of the Prophet (SAW) and his Companions.”

The fact that Shaykh Zakariyyā personally oversaw and specifically prayed for the completion, publication and distribution of this book was sufficient for its widespread acceptance. Mufti Aasim Rashid began the work of translating and annotating this book commenced in the lifetime of the esteemed author (rahimahu’Llāh). He was updated about its progress, saw printouts of the manuscript, and prayed for its completion. The work was completed after he departed this world. May Allah shower His Mercy upon him. The revered author commenced the original Urdu work at al-Masjid al-Nabawī (the Prophet’s (SAW) Mosque) in Madina. The translator had the privilege of completing most of the English rendering and annotations in the same blessed Mosque. This English version includes

many beneficial annotations, including citing primary sources and brief biographical notes to familiarize the English reader with the background, status, achievements, and legacy source of the many great Muslim personalities quoted in this book. In addition, simple explanations have been provided for many Arabic terms, geographical notes are provided for key places, and references and citations have been provided for all hadith, tafsīr and other sourced information in this book, as far as the source could be found. Finally, Takhrīj of hadiths is presented in a minimalist manner, and the status or details of narrations are given where necessary. The book is now available for purchase on Amazon across the world, and it can also be purchased at the Al-Ihsān Centre in Surrey, BC. Sent by: Mohammad Taha

By: Dr. Nikhat Khan Bozai e Care Relief Canada organises clothing drives for the disadvantaged community in Pakistan in the summer We also gave out brand-new, warm blankets and sweaters to needy families in Nepal in the winter. We have previously organised a few clothing drives for

Sindh Pakistan. We had delivered them to hundreds of recipients in the villages of Qaisr Khan Ahmedani, Sulemaan Bhaan, and Bholo Nohrio. We also send the kids some small toys. Our previous shipment was reached on 13th of June 2022.

In October 2022, we conducted a clothing drive for the flood victims in Sindh, Pakistan. At two drop-off locations, one in Surrey and another in Delta,We collected new and gently used clothing, bedsheets, and sweaters ,items weighing roughly 1000 kg were gathered, packed, and scheduled to be shipped through freight by the second week of November. A used clothing drive can be organised with several benefits. The giver gains by decluttering their home and making space for new items so they may buy new clothes, while the recipient gains by receiving newer garments than what they already own for free and by receiving nicer, cooler clothing that can keep them out of

the heat and cold. Occasionally, we arrange financing to help people in need buy new clothes from the market or get them customized stitched garments on special occasions like orphans wedding.

Arshad Sharif: Mystery over killing of Pakistani journalist in Kenya.

T

he shooting dead of a prominent Pakistani investigative journalist by police in Kenya caused outrage in his home country, leaving many wondering how such a thing could have happened. Thousands turned up to Arshad Sharif ’s funeral on Thursday in Islamabad to mourn the well-known critic of Pakistan’s military. Opponents of the current Pakistani government believe that he was targeted in a plot organised in Pakistan. But Kenya’s police, in an initial report, said the 49-year-old was shot dead in a moving vehicle in a case of mistaken identity. Pakistan says it has sent investigators to Kenya to help with the inquiry into what

took place.

What happened?

Late on Sunday evening, Sharif was a passenger in a Toyota Land Cruiser travelling on an unpaved rural road around 30km (20 miles) from the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. Shots were then fired at the vehicle by police, killing the journalist. But exactly why is not clear. The police have issued contradictory statements regarding the shooting. In one account, they say that Sharif was in a vehicle that was mistaken for one that had been reported stolen. The initial police report said officers were on the look-out for the missing vehicle when he was killed.

According to this report, the driver of Sharif ’s Land Cruiser disobeyed orders to stop at a roadblock and officers then shot at the car at least eight times as it moved away, killing the journalist in the process. In a second version of events from police, one of the people inside the vehicle fired first and then officers responded by shooting back. Police say one officer was hit in the hand as a result of the exchange of fire. There are two key questions for investigators: How did police mistake the Toyota Land Cruiser, a large four-wheeldrive car, for the vehicle reported stolen - a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, which is a delivery

van? Why did the police not try to demobilise the vehicle by shooting at the tyres? These will be among the issues to be considered by the police’s Internal Affairs Unit as well as the police watchdog, the Independent Police Oversight Authority, which are both looking into what happened. When is Remembrance Day in Canada?

emembrance Day is commemorated on November 11th each year and marks the end of World War I in 1918. It may also be commonly known as Armistice Day. The intention of the day is to remember the fallen on both sides in the Great War (first world war).Remembrance Day is a federal statutory holiday in Canada. Why Remembrance Day is important? On Remembrance Day, Canadians pause to honour the men and women who have

Stretching after hours of work is a small act of kindness and respect to your body that translates into feelings of worthiness and love. THINK: Self-love manifests through mental well-being. served and continue to serve Canada during times of war, conflict, and peace. More than 2,300,000 Canadians have served and more than 118,000 made the ultimate sacrifice. The poppy is the symbol of Remembrance Day. In the run-up to Remembrance Day, replica poppies are sold by the Royal Canadian Legion to provide assistance to veterans. The reason that the poppy is worn for Remembrance Day is due to a Canadian physician and poet who noticed how quickly poppies had grown over the graves of soldiers who had died during the Battle of Ypres. This symbolism of the blood-red flowers was beautifully captured by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae in his 1915 poem “In Flanders Fields.” The poem was apparently discarded by McCrae but was found by soldiers who sent it to a London-based magazine named Punch. In 1921, people began wearing the poppy three years after the war ended. For the centennial observance of Remembrance Day in

2021, the Royal Canadian Legion released a commemorative replica of the original fabric pin from 1921. November 11th marks the signing of the armistice (peace agreement) between the Allies and Germany at Compiègne, France. The armistice took effect at eleven o’clock in the morning - the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.” However, while this date is used to reflect the end of the whole war, it technically relates to the cease-fire on the Western Front; fighting continued after November 11th in parts of the Ottoman Empire. After the ‘end’ of the war in 1918, it didn’t take long before the signing of the armistice was adopted as a suitable time and date for countries involved in the war to mark the sacrifice of their soldiers, with official remembrance services taking place in the UK and USA in 1919. Donation Acknowledgement from the BC’s Community for Pakistan‘s Flood

Oct 31, 2022 By: Hassaan Ghani Sheikh, BC Regional Manager, Islamic Relief Canada n behalf of Islamic Relief Canada, we would like to thank communities across British Columbia, including donors, organizations, and fellow NGOs for their generous contribution of over $375,000 collected in the province, before government matching, throughout the month of September for the 2022 Pakistan floods. Your donations have supported our emergency response and recovery efforts in Pakistan including shelter, food, drinking water and hygiene items. Islamic Relief has been on the ground in Pakistan for the past 30 years. Over the years, Islamic Relief Pakistan has responded to natural disasters like floods, droughts, and earthquakes in Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. From climate adaptation to sustainable livelihood solutions and women’s empowerment to water challenges, Islamic Relief is addressing the most pressing needs. Additionally, we currently run pro-

O

grams in urban areas like Rawalpindi, where we are enabling children living on the street to go to school and are pioneering microfinancing for widowed women and low-income families. Most recently, responding to the pandemic, Islamic Relief worked with national and provincial governments to provide health institutions with lifesaving equipment. The confidence of our donors and partners has enabled us to become a member of the Humanitarian Coalition, which qualifies Islamic Relief to be the only Muslim iNGO to receive dollar for dollar matching from the government of Canada, and other nations across to world. Islamic Relief transfers funds to disaster-

stricken areas when news breaks - because of our capacity around field offices, and as a result, streamlined reporting, needs assessments, all while following government compliances. Our fundraising offices then gather donations for the outbound money in the following weeks which ensures that the amana of our donors is used immediately for the right communities urgently in need. Through our recovery projects as well as our ongoing efforts to uplift the lives of those afflicted, your support continues to reach millions in need and has assisted more than 500,000 individuals directly impacted by the floods in the previous weeks. Our teams were on the ground immediately after news broke, and were engaging with local emergency response services to rescue stranded families. Our emergency response after recovery operations included the previously mentioned aid, as well as working with UNICEF to restart schooling for children residing in camps. Our long term recovery response focuses on rebuilding infrastructure for afflicted families, by providing cash grants specific to hardware/construction

outlets. While the focus has primarily been on the after affects of the floods, our teams in Pakistan have been continuously engaged in advocacy work around climate change as well as mitigation efforts. In 2021, Islamic Relief built seven reservoirs that not only provide livelihood for thousands in villages near Quetta, Balochistan, but preemptively saved hundreds of mud built houses from the recent flooding by diverting the water that now will be used for drinking and farming. We will continue to work closely with the communities here at home to support those in need around the world for long term interventions in addition to emergency responses. For more information about Islamic Relief Canada and what we do, feel free to visit our website at www.islamicreliefcanada.org. Once again, thank you to British Columbians for their continuous support of our mission. With your support, we can change even more lives and help rebuild Pakistan. Kashmir remains the oldest unresolved dispute on UN agenda

K

By: Hamid Raza Khan ashmir is an unfinished agenda of the partition of subcontinent. It remains one of the oldest unresolved disputes on the agenda of the UN Security Council. It is an internationally recognized dispute as affirmed by numerous UNSC resolutions since 1948. These UN resolutions uphold the fundamental right of the Kashmiri people to decide their own future through the democratic method of a free and impartial plebiscite conducted under the auspices of the United Nations. However, by refusing to implement the UNSC resolutions, India remains in consistent breach of its obligations under Article 25 of the UN Charter that stipulates that “The Members of the United Nations agree to accept and carry out the decisions of the Security Council”. Over the past seven decades, successive Indian governments have subjected the people of Kashmir to worst forms of state-terrorism. Today, the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir is the world’s most heavily militarized zone, which has in fact been turned into the world’s largest prison – where people are not allowed to speak freely. Kashmiri leaders, youth, journalists, civil society and human rights defenders are jailed and silenced. The entire APHC leadership, including Muhammad Yasin Malik, Massarat Aalam Bhat, Shabbir Ahmad Shah, Nayeem Ahmad Khan and Aasiya Andrabi, is also in jail in fabricated cases. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also remains under house arrest and is continuously denied access to go to the Jamia Masjid to deliver the Friday sermon. Besides incarceration,

there are also cases of inhuman custodial deaths of Hurriyat leader Altaf Ahmed Shah recently and Ashraf Sehrai last year. Worryingly, IIOJK continues to be strangled economically, facing the brunt of Indian occupation forces ‘economic terrorism’. While the region has a stark unemployment rate, its farmers are faced with prolonged and forced road blockades by the occupation forces, exposing them to risks of their produce going rotten. This is a deliberate attempt to destroy the region’s economy. India has stepped up its repression of the Kashmiris since its illegal and unilateral actions of 5 August 2019 to colonise the entire Kashmir region and deprive its people of their economic, political and land rights by changing the demography of the IIOJK. In order to suppress the Kashmiris, India has resorted to a blatant use of state-terrorism, extra-judicial killings, fake encounters, cordon-and-search operations, custodial torture, enforced disappearance, use of pellet guns and destruction of properties. These gruesome acts are well-documented by the UN and international human rights organizations, including a recent report by Amnesty International and earlier reports of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) released in 2018 and 2019. These reports substantiate Pakistan’s serious concerns over the human rights impacts of India’s illegal and unilateral measures in the occupied territory, which have been abetted by inhuman military siege, draconian laws such as PSA, UAPA, and Armed Forces Special Powers Act and the state sanctioned impunity in IIOJK –

all in a bid to change the demographic composition of the occupied territory. The report by Amnesty International is also comprehensive in nature as it objectively highlights India’s incessant and purposive failure to uphold the fundamental rights of the Kashmiris and its malfeasant use of national security as an alibi to justify its widespread and systematic campaign of state terrorism in the occupied territory. The Amnesty International’s report renews earlier calls made to India by the UN Office for Human Rights and other independent international voices to provide unhindered access to the occupied territory for independent investigations into the extent of its systematic oppression in IIOJK. On its own, the UN leadership has repeatedly expressed its concerns “over reports of restrictions on the Indian-side of Kashmir, which could exacerbate the human rights situation in the region.” Several UN Special Rapporteurs have termed the overall human rights situation in IIOJK in a “free fall” and categorized the military siege as “a form of collective punishment of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, without even a pretext of a precipitating offence” There is now a discernible uptick in the India’s international scrutiny and censure for its violations of human rights in the IIOJK. Three deliberations on Kashmir by UN Security Council since 5 August, 2019 have been held. Statements have been made by the UN leadership reaffirming UN position on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. Debates in world Parliaments including those of EU, US, UK, Sweden and Portugal have been

held. Recently, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock also said that Germany and the international community had a role to play in Kashmir and called for an intensive engagement of the United Nations in finding a peaceful resolution to the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. Earlier in September, US Ambassador to Pakistan David Blome visited Azad Jammu & Kashmir in Sep 2022. The dream of stability and peace in South Asia and the world at large will remain elusive until the Jammu and Kashmir dispute is resolved in accordance with the relevant UNSC resolutions and aspirations of Kashmiris. It has serious implications for the peace and security of the region. I think it needs to be understood that since this dispute is an international dispute and is on the agenda of the UN Security Council itself, it is the direct responsibility of the UN and the Security Council and particularly its five permanent members to make sincere and concerted efforts to resolve this dispute. It is time for them to act. Pressure needs to be built upon India to have the Security Council resolutions implemented which provide for the right to self- determination of the Kashmiri people. Expectations are a part of life, and they enrich it. Sometimes our expectations are satisfied, but other times they are not. We demand a lot from individuals, such as love and care and a genuine relationship without any outcome. However, it’s our worst blunder. People are cruel, and you have no one more special than your parents, followed by your siblings. We expect a lot from our politicians without realizing that they merely seek fame and money beneath the table. They are unified, and we the people are fighting for them blindly. The nonsense, we overlooked. The globe collected donations for the flood, but no one knows where the many millions went. We vote for them because we have feelings and expectations for them. We make plans that inflation will be controlled, that we will find the great opportunity for our source of income, and unexpectedly, there is a high-level expectation with the vote, but when they succeed, they never do anything for us, the people, they don’t treat us like humans, and when your trust breaks and you realize the person was actually manipulat-

ing your mind, that’s the most painful and it hurts a lot. Being a GenZ, I get to hear a lot from my grandparents about how they used to purchase a sack of wheat in a few Ana’s (it was a medium of exchange at that time). Well, that seems like a distant dream now as inflation has taken over our lives completely. Even though inflation is prevalent everywhere in the world now, it has affected Pakistan more than others. That’s because despite facing inflation and other issues, other countries are rising towards success whereas Pakistan is heading towards the relatively lower end of the spectrum. Unfortunately, in today’s time, Pakistan is stuck in its self-created political circus. Amongst various other problems, inflation is one of the biggest issues this country is currently facing. A skyrocketing increase in inflation has reached those dangerous levels which were never seen or even heard before. Survival of a common man has become extremely difficult. Not only is that, but even highly paid professionals are worried about the present and the next upcoming inflation flood too. In today’s time, the war between Russia and Ukraine plays an integral role in this increased inflation rate across the globe, due to which diesel and petrol rates have also risen exponentially. Previous stable markets

have crashed, dollar rates are very high, and local traders are facing immense losses. Grocery items have become unaffordable for people. People are opting for double-shift jobs so that they can make ends meet. There is chaos among people. As per my understanding it’s our fault too because poor policies and ill management of our government is making the situation worse. We select leaders on a lame and vague basis; poor policies and ill management of our government are making the situation worse. The current situation of the country is very critical. Is the long march worth it? What are its aftereffects? The long march is going excitedly, and difficulties have been faced, but not letting down excitement of people. As Imran khan ruled for 3years in Pakistan. What happened with the country is the same as it was. On top of that, continuous unstable political situation in our country making our survival even worse. The one proof of political instability is the long marches that take place whenever a political party wants to put forth their agenda. These marches cost us a huge amount of money along with other disadvantages such as closing of roads, transportation services, business meetings and even national level events thus putting entire country on halt that ultimately leads to weakened country

Addressing the event, High Commissioner Zaheer Janjua highlighted the grave consequences climate induced calamities had caused for countries like Pakistan which had little to do with global emissions. He said that Pakistan had become a victim of climate induced catastrophic floods even though it contributed less than 1 per cent to global emissions but in the vulnerability index it was already amongst the top 5 countries. He called for an urgent global action to deal with what he called a clear and present danger staring us in the form of climate change. He warned that Pakistan had witnessed the manifestation of climate change but tomorrow it could be some other country. He noted that while it was great to have lovely agreements such as Paris Accord to address the climate change issue, it was also necessary to pay attention to what was happening on the ground. By: HC of Pak standing in the world. However, there’s another side to these long marches, i.e., that they enable people to raise their voices against corruption and several other problems they feel are hindering the progress of their country. People take part in these peaceful marches to express their anger, frustrations, concerns, and disappointments over matters that they find are damaging to the overall reputation of the country internationally. So, in my view, it is a double-edged sword. Thus, in my opinion, we as a nation should stand together and not get jumped onto the bandwagon of different political parties, and instead of fighting among ourselves, we need to hold each other up and stop these politicians ruining our country. We need to stop corruption by removing corrupt people from our nation and do some introspection which will be very valuable for ourselves as well as for our country. Pakistan needs to increase the export of goods and services which will eventually strengthen Pakistan’s currency. Don’t constantly anticipate amazing things from wasted people. Always anticipate huge visions from great people and only think about big issues since no one cares about you.
