Trudeau announces multiple investigations into foreign election interference

Conservatives and New Democrats have called for a public inquiry.

With his government under fire over claims that China meddled in the 2019 and 2021 votes, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced multiple investigations into foreign election interference and the appointment of a special rapporteur.

Trudeau told a news conference

Monday evening that, in the coming days, he will name an “eminent” and independent person as a special rapporteur on election interference “who will have a wide mandate and make expert recommendations on combating interference and strengthening our democracy.” Trudeau’s announcement comes during a heated debate in Ottawa over how to han-

PTI worker killed, 21 injured in clashes with police: Imran doesn’t leave Zaman Park, rally cancelled

They want us to resort to chaos, but we will not let them succeed,” Hammad Azahr says

LAHORE: The Pakistan Tehreeke-Insaf (PTI) Wednesday told its workers to return to their homes “peacefully” after a party worker was killed, 21 others were injured in clashes and the police arrested dozens of others for violating Section 144 of the CrPC. The deceased was identified as Ali Bilal alias Zile-Shah, a resident of Jahangir Town. He was baton-charged violently, resulting in his death, party leaders said.

PTI alleged that shells were even fired from the premises of Aitchison

College by the police. Besides, till the filing of the report, a boy was also reportedly killed due to the use of poisonous substances mixed in the water canon meant to disperse the PTI workers.

At least 11 police personnel including two DSPs and one SHO were also injured due to violence by the PTI workers. DSP Sabzazar and Township SHO Hanjarwal, Constables Irfan, Nadeem, Bilal, Waqar, Abdul Sattar, Ali Ismat, Sikandar, and Ali Hamza were among the injured personnel.

The condition of one of the injured people was said to be critical. Police said that the PTI had announced a pro-judiciary rally and gave a call to its workers to gather at party chief Imran Khan’s Zaman Park residence.

The party leaders announced cancelling the rally saying the government wanted bloodshed to make it an excuse for postponing elections. PTI Chairman Imran Khan did not come

The Bank of Canada is holding its key interest rate steady for the first time in a year, sticking to its wait-and-see approach even as its U.S. counterpart charts a more aggressive path. The central bank said Wednesday that it has decided to hold its key rate at 4.5 per cent based on its assessment of recent economic data.“Governing council will continue to assess economic developments and the impact of past interest rate increases, and is prepared to increase the policy rate further if needed to return to the two per cent inflation target,” the Bank of Canada said. The central bank rapidly raised its key interest rate over the last year, bringing it from near-zero to the highest level since 2007.

In January, the Bank of Canada announced an eighth consecutive rate hike and said it expects to maintain its key interest rate if economic developments stay broadly in line with its forecasts.

Economists were widely expecting the Bank of Canada to hold its key interest rate Wednesday, noting it would be too soon to raise rates

FAITH

” Narrated by Abu Huraira

The Prophet said, “Faith (Belief) consists of more than sixty branches (i.e. parts). And Haya (This term “Haya” covers a large number of concepts which are to be taken together; amongst them are self respect, modesty, bashfulness, and scruple, etc.) is a part of faith.”

How Should You Prepare For Ramadan 2023, And How Should You Spend It ?

Get Rid Of The Bad Habit

Although there are no direct restrictions on what we can and cannot do during Ramadan, the prophet encourages us to be good to others. So, instead of drinking, smoking, and clubbing, spend more time performing Ramadan good deeds such as going to the mosque, attending Quran classes or participating in voluntary acts to help the poor and needy.

Maintain The Integrity Of Your Salat

The prophet’s (SAW) companions used to fast six months before the next Ramadan to prepare for the new month. Our Muslim population is so preoccupied these days that they are completely unaware that Ramadan has arrived.

To Wrap Up:

However, living in the modern era, it is easy to spend this holy month in an ideal way as the teachings of Islam have been made easy to access with online Quran teaching. With the practice of good deeds and learning the Quran, everyone can spend the Holy month of Ramadan in a much better way. This takes us to the question, “How can we be fully prepared to receive the Barakah of this holy month?”

How Should You Prepare For Ramadan?

Sincere Repentance

Make it a habit to perform Zikr, even if it is as simple as saying (Astaghfirullah) on the Tasbih whenever you have time or after Salat. You should also enjoy praying the Nafilah and Tahajjud in order to repent.

According to the Qur’an, verse 66:8, “O you who believe, turn to Allah with sincere repentance in the hope that your Lord will expiate your sins.”

Be Happy And Demonstrate Happiness.

Allah has made Ramadan for us. According to Abu Hurayrah, the Prophet (SAW) says, “When Ramadan approaches, the doors of Jannah open, the doors of hell close, and the devil is chained.” (Bukhari/Muslim).

This also implies that we should cleanse our minds of hatred and filth in order to be genuinely happy and rejoice as the month approaches.

Reflect, Recite, and Renew

The three R’s are for every Muslim to reflect on the characteristics that define them as Muslims. It is said that a Muslim should try to read the entire 114 chapters of the Qur’an during the month of Ramadan.

It is not compulsory that you become a Hafiz, but rather that you read the holy book and develop a closer relationship with Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala). We must also remember to pray, perform the Nafilah, recite the Tasbih, and perform charitable acts.

Women’s Rights in the Quran And Sunnah

Aside from the five daily prayers, learn to pray two raka’ats before and after Salat, with the exception of Magrib. Indulge in Tarawih and Tahajjud, especially during the last 10 days of Ramadan, when the night better than a thousand months will be seen –Qiyam ul layl.

Get Up For Suhoor And Have Iftar.

Many times, people question women’s rights in Islam. Before we delve into what the Quran and Sunnah about the topic, Islam came at a time when women were barbarically treated by the Arabs. Female infanticide was so common that women would be scared giving birth to a girl child. The male was considered superior in all forms. He was given all the rights while the female stood deprived. And then came Islam. It taught men how to honor women, how to give her the rights she deserved. It elevated the status of the woman from a second class citizen of the society to somebody who deserved to be respected.

Women’s rights as mothers: Al-Bukhaari (5971) and Muslim (2548) narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: A man came to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and said:

adulthood, he and I will come like this on the Day of Resurrection,” and he held his fingers together. Narrated by Muslim, 2631.

Ibn Maajah (3669) narrated that ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Aamir (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say: “Whoever has three daughters and is patient towards them, and feeds them, gives them to drink and clothes them from his riches, they will be a shield for him from the Fire on the Day of Resurrection.”

Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Ibn Maajah.

Women’s rights as aunts and sisters

During the month of Ramadan, a Muslim must eat two meals: suhur, which is a predawn meal eaten before the second call of the Fajar prayer or just before the sun rises; and Iftar, which is the second meal consumed after the sun has set or at the first call of Maghrib.

Before settling down for the proper breaking of the fast, the prophet recommends that Muslims eat dates, drink water, and pray the Maghrib. This allows you to pray more comfortably without being distracted by hunger.

As you prepare for Ramadan, consider the words of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW):’

A Hadith Related To Preparation For Ramadan

According to Ibn-e-Khuzaymah’s Hadith, the prophet was quoted as saying, “O people, there has come upon us a great month, a most blessed month, in which lies a month worth more than a thousand nights” (lai lat’ul Kadri). Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) has made fasting obligatory this month and has made nighttime wakefulness a Sunnah.

Whoever draws closer to Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) in this month will be rewarded as if he had performed a mandatory deed at any other time of the year.

And whoever performs a compulsory deed shall receive the reward of seventy compulsory deeds performed at any other time of the year. This is a month of patience, and the reward for patience is Jannatul Firdaus.

It is a month of compassion for our fellow man; it is a month in which a true believer’s provision grows.”

To Wrap Up:

As good Muslims, we should continue to seek knowledge about what fasting is all about during the month of Ramadan, because only knowledge can truly prepare us for Ramadan and help us spend it well. If you’re looking for an online Quran teacher, you should definitely give Quran Host a chance to help you.

Women’s rights as wives: “and live with them honourably” [al-Nisa’ 4:19]

“And they (women) have rights similar (to those of their husbands) over them to what is reasonable, but men have a degree (of responsibility) over them. And Allah is AllMighty, All-Wise” [al-Baqarah 2:228]

And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “I urge you to treat women well.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 331; Muslim, 1468.

Women’s rights as daughters

And Islam honours women as daughters, and encourages us to raise them well and educate them. Islam states that raising daughters will bring a great reward. For example, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever takes care of two girls until they reach

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “O people! Spread (the greeting of) salaam, offer food (to the needy), uphold the ties of kinship, and pray at night when people are sleeping, and you will enter Paradise in peace.” Narrated by Ibn Maajah, 3251; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Ibn Maajah.

Al-Bukhaari (5988) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah, may He be exalted, said to the ties of kinship: ‘Whoever upholds you, I will support him, and whoever breaks you, I will cut him off.’”

In addition to these, a woman is given the following rights in the Qur’an and Hadith:

• The right to inherit property.

• The right to choose her spouse.

• The right to deny living with her in-laws.

• The right to seek a divorce.

• The right to education

• The right to earn for herself.

• The right to equal treatment.

RE the political events in Pakistan with its multiple crises leading to an intervention? This is the grim warning sounded by nearly every second commentator who has despaired of the warring political parties resolving matters — one refusing to talk to chors, while the second lot cannot even decide if it wants a level playing field or revenge, or whether it simply thinks it’s all the same. And in the meantime, there seems to be little or no energy left to deal with the economy or the security threat looming large.

For instance, the last two coups in Pakistan were triggered less by political infighting than by other factors. In the 1970s, it was perhaps more directly linked to the increasing social mobilisation and mass participation, which led to the rise of the PPP and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

To a large extent, the objective of the coup was to arrest this, for in the long run, it could have damaged far more than just the power of the military. (In this sense, the Zia coup was akin to a number of such interventions across the developing world of that era.)

In 1999, it was triggered by Nawaz

Sharif’s onslaught on institutional interests directly, which is how his decision to replace a military chief abruptly was interpreted.

Had external factors not been present, chances are the interventions would have ended quickly.

This idea of political infighting and an immature political leadership forcing a reluctant establishment to intervene is perhaps more of a justification for an interventionist military than actual fact. The corruption of politicians is also a similar narrative, to use a word muchfavoured these days, which was shaped to rationalise the political activities of the ‘other’.

So those who are worried warn that if this dogfight continues, the establishment might just get so tired, especially with the fragile economic situation, it may be tempted to sweep the entire chessboard away. It’s noteworthy that this warning is sounded by those who have witnessed coups (hard ones at that) in the past. But such predictions provide few details on the link between political infighting and direct interventions. In other words, the reasons for a coup, if it were to happen, will and can be many but least of all the infighting of politicians. Such interventions have more hard-nosed reasons behind them.

But now that the conversation has been kick-started, it is irksome that so few details have been provided. Indeed, in the myriad conversations predicting a ‘hard reset’, which appears to be the latest euphemism for a direct intervention, there is little clarity on some issues.

The first to come to mind is the question of legitimacy.

For instance, be it in 1977 or 1999, it wasn’t hard to identify support for the intervention from significant sections of society. In 1977, the business community supported the coup, as did a section of the land-holding elite, because nationalisation and the half-baked land reforms policy had hurt the privileged classes. In 1999, Nawaz Sharif had made a number of op-

dle the issue. NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre have been pushing the idea of an open inquiry on foreign election interference. Trudeau said the rapporteur could recommend a formal inquiry. “And we will abide by their recommendation,” he said in prepared remarks.Trudeau and the head of Canada’s intelligence agency have acknowledged that China attempted to interfere in the past two federal elections. They maintain the

again. The economy has also generally moved in the right direction for the central bank, which is aiming to slow economic activity.

“There really were no significant surprises here,” said Douglas Porter, BMO’s chief economist. The Bank of Canada’s policy is starting to diverge from the U.S. Federal Reserve, which

This is also why the Musharraf coup was perhaps less oppressive than the earlier one. It enjoyed support from a number of quarters and didn’t aim to check popular support or mobilisation.

So, the question this leads to is — who would provide the support this time around?

The business community? Or will it be the elite in general (which is a popular word for a segment of society these days) which will provide the ‘legitimacy’ and support this time, for the sake of stability in place of the chaos of the present?

Or is it assumed the political parties opposed to PTI will provide the support, however quietly? However, there are two more factors to be considered for a direct intervention.

One is the evident turmoil in the institution itself, which appears to be unprecedented. And this leads to the question about how this may impact the decision to intervene directly. Will it create any difficulties in terms of setting up govern-

elections’ overall outcomes were not altered.

The prime minister also said he’s tasked the country’s two intelligence review bodies — the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians and the National Security and Intelligence Review Agency — with investigating the issue.“I talked to them about undertaking urgent work on the issue of foreign interference, within their mandates,” he said. MPs and senators on the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians

brutality and murdering party worker Ali Bilal in clashes near his residence in Lahore. “Ali Bilal unarmed & our dedicated & passionate PTI worker murdered by Punjab police,” the former prime minister said in a tweet. “Shameful, this

ment, taking the ‘tough’ decisions and ensuring the self-claimed ‘legitimacy’ as political player?

The second is linked to Pakistan’s regional position, which has usually led to international support, especially in the shape of foreign largesse. And this has always been a big factor in the longevity of military regimes; be it Ayub’s, Zia’s or Musharraf’s. For it allows dictatorships to disburse state patronage to co-opted politicians and create a feel-good factor, which keeps the populace as well as elite interests quiet. Because once elections are announced — local or national, party-based or party-less — constituency politicians are compelled to take part and then tone down antagonism, in order to seek access to state patronage. This allows the rulers to ensure support and/or relative quiet for some time.

Had this external factor not been present, chances are these interventions would have ended as quickly as did the judicially backed caretaker set-up in Bangladesh in 2007; it lasted a mere two years. And both these factors (or their absence) can complicate the stability of a direct intervention, even if there is some debate or interest in such a move.

It might be easier to manage a disciplined democracy run through co-opted politicians and a semimanaged judicial system, than direct intervention. But even this would require considerable tweaking to make it work, for last year shows that tried and tested formulas are not so easily implementable anymore.

Questions about whether the Prime Minister’s Office was briefed on alleged Chinese interference in the 2019 election dominated question period again on Wednesday — with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau calling suggestions that he isn’t loyal to Canada “despicable.”

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre tried multiple times Wednesday to get the prime minister to respond to allegations that he and his national security adviser were warned that Chinese government officials were funnelling money to Canadian political candidates — despite their claims to the contrary. According to reporting by Global News, the Privy Council Office prepared a report for the Trudeau government warning that Chinese officials in Toronto had disbursed money to a “covert network tasked to interfere in Canada’s 2019 election.” ”A large clandestine transfer of funds earmarked for the federal election from the PRC Consulate in Toronto was transferred to an elected

provincial government official via a staff member of a 2019 federal candidate,” the report says, according to Global. Global reported similar allegations back in November —

that the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) briefed Trudeau in January 2022 on Chinese efforts to interfere in that election. The interference reportedly included the Chinese government sending money to at least 11 candidates. “We have no information on any federal candidates receiving money from China. That is still the case,” Trudeau said in the House of Commons Wednesday. Poilievre asked all the questions directed at the prime minister Wednesday. He pressed Trudeau to state which staffers received briefings and “how much his party got in illegal donations funnelled from Beijing.” ”He’s not interested in protecting the safety of the people serving this country. He’s interested in protecting the Liberal Party of Canada,” said Poilievre.

Suspended opposition leader Voreqe Bainimarama has resigned from Parliament with immediate effect. Mr Bainimarama made the announcement a few minutes ago in a live video posted on the FijiFirst social media page. “Given the need to maintain our numbers in Parliament over the next three years, and the need for FijiFirst to be on the ground at all times, following discussions with our General Secretary (Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum), our Parliamentary Caucus, and most of all our supporters, I have tendered my resignation from Parliament, with immediate effect,” the FijiFirst party leader said. At the spot, an on-duty Rab official was heard speaking on his mobile and requesting a top official of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) to send an engineer for clearance.

“We can’t enter without your clearance,” the Rab official was heard saying.

Around 8:00pm yesterday, the fire service halted their rescue operations at the affected building in Gulistan around 8:00pm after it was marked as risky due to the damaged columns in the basement.

“The basement and ground of the building have collapsed and the columns of the building were damaged severely following the explosion,” Brig Gen Md Main Uddin, director general (DG) of Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence, told reporters yesterday.

“We took the opinions of experts from Rajuk and Bangladesh Army and deemed the building risky. We are refraining from trying to enter the building in this state. We will try to stabilise the building before resuming the

operation there. Meanwhile, we are continuing our operation at the adjacent. The explosion took place around 4:45pm yesterday.

Rescue efforts to resume soon, 17 bodies handed over so far Rescue operations at the building in Gulistan, where an explosion yesterday claimed the lives of at least 17 people, will resume shortly. Sanjay Kumar Roy, warehouse inspector of fire service and civil defence, told reporters around 7:50am that rescue efforts would resume in around an hour. Around 4:45pm yesterday, an explosion at a building in Dhaka’s Gulistan claimed at least 17 lives and left more than 100 injured. So far, three persons are reported still missing, said Sanjay Kumar Roy.

Annual count of Metro Vancouver homeless underway after pandemic hiatus

VANCOUVER - More than 1,000 volunteers have fanned out across Metro Vancouver for the first homeless count since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Homeless Services Association of BC says 11 municipalities across the Lower Mainland are taking part in the 24-hour, point-in-time count, which began Tuesday evening. The association says its volunteers try to be as accurate as possible in order to understand who is living without safe, affordable, appropriate housing, and why they are in that situation. The hidden homeless,

such as couch surfers or those living in vehicles, are likely under-represented, but the association says the unconventionally housed who have not been counted can call 211 to complete a short, anonymous survey.

A report will be released in the fall examining how the number and type of people experiencing homelessness in Metro Vancouver have changed since the 2020 tally. That count was completed less than a week before the pandemic was declared and it identified 3,634 people who were experiencing homelessness. David Wells, chair of the

Indigenous Homelessness Steering Committee, which is a partner in the count, said the homeless are at greater risk of racism, misogyny or other oppression and he says the problem happens in all communities.

“We know that Indigenous people are under-represented in homeless counts, but we also know that we are 13 times more likely to experience homelessness compared to our numbers in the general population,” Wells said in a statement...

Vancouver realtor says holding key rate could provide ‘sense of stability’ to slumping housing market

Many mortgage-holding homeowners are breathing a sigh of relief with news the Bank of Canada is keeping its key interest rate at 4.5 per cent. The bank’s decision comes after a year filled with increases intended to slow down the economy and decrease record-high inflation levels. In a news release Wednesday morning, the Bank of Canada said it was able to hold the key rate due to economic growth slowing down and inflation decreasing in January. However, the Bank of Canada noted the 5.9 per cent inflation rate is still high, and said the key interest rate could later be used

to help reach its goal of two per cent. “I do think there are storm clouds on the horizon,” said Vancouver-based economist Jason Clemens. “It’s not clear to me at all that we are now in a trend of lowered inflation.”

Clemens believes it’s far too early to see Wednesday’s Bank of Canada announcement as a sign of hope.

“It takes anywhere between 6-12 months for the effects of monetary policy to show up,” said Clemens. “The bank only started raising rates a year ago and so the full effects from even the first set of interest rate hikes has not

fully made its way to the economy.”

One Vancouver-based realtor told CTV News the Bank of Canada decision could impact the slumping housing market.

“I think a pause will really help homebuyers, especially start to feel there’s a sense of stability in the marketplace,” said Ryan Dash, partner with Vancouver Life Real Estate Group.

He said the flow in available credit can influence prices in the market. However, he believes a lack of supply remains a top issue.

“Inventory in Vancouver is just as big a story as interest rates.”

Three-day halt to bus service in Fraser Valley as strike action escalates

There will be no bus service in the Fraser Valley starting Thursday morning, as drivers continue to escalate job action.

BC Transit says service will be halted until the end of the day Saturday in Abbotsford, Agassiz-Harrison, Chilliwack, Hope, and Mission. The Fraser Valley Express, which runs between Lougheed SkyTrain sta-

tion in Burnaby to Abbotsford and Chilliwack will also cease to operate. “BC Transit is closely monitoring the situation and sincerely apologizes to customers for the inconvenience caused by this matter,” a spokesperson for BC Transit wrote in a statement.

“We understand the frustration felt by customers, and that the job action is difficult for everyone in-

volved in the region.” The service disruption comes as CUPE Local 561, the union representing drivers and other workers and their employer First Transit remain locked in a dispute over wages. The union says its members are compensated 32 per cent less than other transit workers in the region.Source:bc.ctvnews.ca/

B.C.’s proposed pay transparency legislation lacks real power to create pay equity, advocates say Social Sharing

Bill prohibits employers from asking job applicants about pay history, requires salary on all posted jobs.

The British Columbia government tabled a bill on pay transparency Tuesday which advocates say lacks power to make a difference for women in the workplace.

According to the province, the legisla-

tion is the first phase toward pay equity, and once passed will require employers to include wage or salary ranges on all publicly advertised jobs, and forbid employers to ask job seekers about their pay history or punish employees who disclose their pay to co-workers or job applicants.

B.C. employers will also gradually be required to publicly post reports on their gender pay gap once the legislation passes. But while greater transparency is welcome, it will not make a significant difference on pay equity in the province, says B.C.’s human rights commissioner.

Surrey Council directs staff to revise budget to reduce property tax increase

Surrey, B.C. – During today’s Finance Committee Meeting, Surrey Council voted to refer the proposed 2023-2027 General Operating and Capital Budget back to staff for revision. In light of the $89.9M announced for Surrey through the provincial Growing Communities Fund, Surrey Council has asked staff to work on reducing the overall proposed property tax increase from 17.5% to no more than 12.5%.

“Since the proposed budget was made public two weeks ago, the city has secured nearly $90M from the Province

of British Columbia,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “As a result, we are now in a position to revise the budget and bring the overall property tax rate down. The new funding from the province will go to capital improvements, such as the third sheet of ice in Cloverdale and in turn decrease the policing surcharge from the proposed 9.5% to 4.5%. The new lower rate, should it pass, will continue to keep Surrey in the bottom third of property taxes in the Metro region. It is important to note that the proposed 2023 budget is built on the unwinding

of the Surrey Police Service and maintaining the RCMP as the police of jurisdiction in Surrey. Should the police transition be allowed to continue, the extra costs would not be covered in the proposed 2023 budget.” Staff will present a revised budget to Surrey Council for consideration at the next Regular Council Meeting on April 6.

B.C. judge rules province not liable for barring Sechelt

residents from their homes over sinkhole

Residents

The B.C. Court of Appeal has overturned a court decision

“in nuisance” after Sunshine Coast residents were forced from their homes by the threat of giant sinkholes in 2018. According to the court, nuisance is defined as a tort or civil wrong that arises from conduct by a defendant that substantially and unreasonably interferes with the use and enjoyment of their property. According to a ruling issued Thursday, the province of B.C. cannot be held liable for blocking residents from accessing their homes because “there is no suggestion that the province owned, occupied, or made use of [the] land.” The province had launched an appeal after a lower court judge

ordered it to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to homeowners in the Sechelt neighbourhood of Seawatch to compensate them for rent, moving and furniture after they lost the use of their homes. The lower court ruling stated that neighbours Carole Rosewall and Gregory and Geraldine Latham had been left in “limbo” by a 2019 evacuation order and a provincially-funded fence that kept them away from their properties while squatters and vandals moved in.

The District of Sechelt issued an evacuation order and declared a state of local emergency under B.C.’s Emergency Power Act in

February 2019 after a 12-metre-deep sinkhole opened up on the roadway. The Minister of Public Safety renewed the state of local emergency weekly for almost three years until last February, shortly after the ruling holding the province liable “in nuisance.” The lower court judge agreed with the Lathams that the province was liable in nuisance for encouraging and funding construction of a permanent fence that, since May 2019, has prevented people from entering Seawatch. It also found it was liable for “unlawfully” maintaining the state of local emergency for three years. Source: ctvnews.ca

Tens of thousands protest in Greece over deadly train crash

Tens of thousands of people marched in Greece on Wednesday to protest over the country’s deadliest train disaster on record, as workers staged a nationwide, day-long walkout. The crash on Feb 28 killed 57 people and has stirred public outrage over the crumbling state of the rail network. Striking workers say years of neglect, underinvestment and understaffing — a legacy of Greece’s decade-long debt crisis — are to blame. More than 40,000 people, among them transport workers, students and teachers, marched in central Athens chanting “Murderers!” and “We are all in the same carriage”. A group of protesters clashed with police, who fired tear gas at the crowd.

Thousands also took to the streets in Greece’s second-biggest city of Thessaloniki, where a group of protesters hurled stones at a government building.

The protests coincided with a 24-hour strike called by workers of different sectors, which disrupted travel across the country.

Many of the around 350 people aboard an intercity passenger train that collided headon with a freight train while travelling on the same track were university students heading north to Thessaloniki from Athens. The disaster has sparked protests across Greece over the past week.

“Message me when you get there,” a placard in Athens read, echoing what has become one of the protest slogans. “You feel angry because the government did nothing for all of those kids. The public transport is a mess,” said 19-year-old Nikomathi Vathi.

“We’re going to be here until things change,” said another student, Vaggelis Somarakis.

“We are the youth of this country and we’re not going to stop.” The conservative government, was initially planning to call elections in the coming weeks, promised on Wednesday to fix the ailing railway system.

Transport Minister George Gerapetritis told a news conference he understood the anger the accident had caused. No train will set off again, if we have not secured safety at the maximum possible level,” he said, apologising for Greece’s deadliest rail crash on record... Source: Dawn.com

Biden proposes taxes on the rich to cover Medicare expenses

In his plan, Biden is overtly declaring that the wealthy ought to shoulder a heavier tax burden. His budget would draw a direct line between those new taxes and the popular health insurance programme for people older than 65, essentially asking those who have fared best in the economy to subsidise the rest of the population.

Israeli forces kill at least 6 Palestinians in latest Jenin raid

At least 11 people wounded, including two with serious injuries, the Palestinian health ministry says. Israeli forces have killed at least six Palestinians and wounded 11 others during a raid in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin, according to the Palestinian Authority’s health ministry. Two of the wounded people had serious injuries, the ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

Witnesses told AFP news agency that a house was besieged by the Israeli forces and hit with rockets. Footage circulating on social media showed helicopters over a column of military vehicles entering the city.

Israeli authorities said one of the Palestinian men they killed was behind the shooting of two brothers from an illegal settlement near the Palestinian village of Huwara last week.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s

office said troops had “eliminated” the gunman who last month killed two Israeli settlers in the West Bank. Al Jazeera’s Sara Khairat, reporting from Ramallah, said that another raid by Israeli forces was also carried out on Tuesday evening in another refugee camp south of Nablus. The army entered a building in the Askar refugee camp and arrested three men, including two sons of a 49-year-old man killed in Jenin.

Several Soldiers Killed in Al-Shabaab Attack on Somalia Army Base

Al-Shabaab militants on Tuesday attacked a military base in a Somali town recently recaptured from the Islamists, killing several soldiers, according to local army officials.

US President Joe Biden is expected to unveil his proposed budget on Thursday as he prepares for likely re-election bid. US President Joe Biden has proposed new taxes on the rich to help fund Medicare, saying the plan would help to extend the insurance programme’s solvency by 25 years and provide a degree of middle-class stability to millions of older adults.

Biden wants to increase the Medicare tax rate from 3.8 percent to 5 percent on income exceeding $400,000 per year, including salaries and capital gains. That would likely increase tax revenues by more than $117bn across 10 years, according to prior estimates by the Tax Policy Center. “This modest increase in Medicare contributions from those with the highest incomes will help keep the Medicare program strong for decades to come,” Biden wrote in a Tuesday essay in The New York Times. He called Medicare a “rock-solid guarantee that Americans have counted on to be there for them when they retire”.

Britain introduces bill to stop migrant crossings of English Channel

Home secretary admits it’s uncertain the bill upholds current human rights laws.

The British government said Tuesday that it was ready for legal challenges to a tough new law intended to stop tens of thousands of migrants a year from reaching the country in small boats across the English Channel.

Home Secretary Suella Braverman said the government had “pushed the boundaries of international law” with a bill that will bar asylum claims by anyone who reaches the U.K. by unauthorized means, and will compel the government to detain and then deport them “to their home country or a safe third country.” They would be banned from ever re-entering the country. “If you enter Britain illegally, you will be detained and swiftly removed,” Braverman told lawmakers in the House of Commons as she introduced the government’s “Illegal Migration Bill.”

The government says the new law, once approved by Parliament, will deter migrants and hobble smuggling gangs who send desperate people on hazardous journeys across one of

the world’s busiest shipping lanes.

Bill slammed by Opposition

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the law would “take back control” of U.K. borders — a central pledge of the successful but divisive campaign to take Britain out of the European Union.

Labour Party immigration spokesperson Yvette Cooper accused the government of “ramping up the rhetoric on refugees” without solving the “deeply damaging chaos” in Britain’s asylum system. Source: cbc.ca/

The troubled Horn of Africa nation has witnessed a surge in attacks as government forces and allied militias wage a declared “all-out” war against the Al-Qaeda-linked militants. The jihadists stormed the base at Janay Abdale, located around 60 kilometers (40 miles) outside the port town of Kismayo.

Somali army officers said the militants used explosive-laden vehicles to mount an attack on the base before they were repelled.

“We have lost seven soldiers in the fighting,” Mohamed Rashed, a local military commander, told AFP by phone.

Another officer Sugow Abdi, who was among the troop reinforcements sent to the base, said several soldiers were killed in heavy combat.

“Fifteen soldiers who were wounded in the attack were taken to the hospital in Kismayo,” he told AFP by phone.

Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the at-

tack. Somali forces wrested control of Janay Abdale from the militants in January as part of a ramped-up government offensive against the militants. Al-Shabaab has been waging a bloody insurgency against the central government in the fragile nation for about 15 years. In recent months, the army and local militias known as “Macawisley” have retaken chunks of territory in the central Galmudug and Hirshabelle states in an operation backed by US air strikes and an African Union force. Despite the gains by the pro-government forces, the militants have continued to demonstrate the ability to strike back with lethal force against civilian and military targets.

In the deadliest Al-Shabaab attack since the offensive was launched last year, 121 people were killed in two car bomb explosions at the education ministry in Mogadishu in October. Although forced out of Mogadishu and other main urban centers more than a decade ago, Al-Shabaab remains entrenched in parts of rural central and southern Somalia.

Ukraine war: Russian air strikes hit cities across country

Russia has carried out a series of missile strikes across Ukraine, hitting residential buildings and infrastructure in Kharkiv and Odesa, Ukrainian officials say. The attacks have caused power blackouts in several areas, regional heads added.

A mass missile attack struck an energy facility in the port city of Odesa, triggering power cuts, its governor Maksym Marchenko said. Residential areas were also hit but no casual-

ties were reported, he added.

Oleg Synegubov, head of Kharkiv’s regional administration, said “about 15” strikes had hit the city and region, with “critical infrastructure facilities” and a residential building targeted.

More strikes were reported in the eastern city of Dnipro and other regions.

Practice Positive Thinking

You can train your mind to think positively by leveraging a simple scientific concept: Your working memory can only focus on a few concepts at a time. For example, have you ever found it difficult to talk on the phone and listen to someone else at the same time?

So, to help you train your mind, all you have to do is keep it focused on uplifting thoughts until you form the same types of neural pathways that are created when you establish a new habit. With focused practice, you make a habit of more positive thinking. Practice the virtues of positive psychology, which focuses on building your mental health with character traits like courage, gratitude, hope, humor, knowledge, and encouragement.

When an adverse event occurs, remember that it’s your response that truly determines the outcome. Always look for a positive response or optimistic lesson when such events take place.

Use the following eight strategies to develop a positive mental attitude and have a more positive outlook on your life and the world around you.

Know Yourself

Identify what your unfavorable habits are so you can assess areas of needed change. Notice the thoughts you have during the day. Where does your mind wander to when you are driving, walking, or your hands are busy? What kind of internal dialogue do you have when you are faced with challenges, negative situations, or the mundane aspects of daily life?

If your answers to those questions were related to negative thought patterns or habits, start to replace them with positive ones. Start by identifying the parts of your life that tend to cause negative feelings and thoughts. It might be a relationship, your morning commute, co-workers, a family member, work environment, or other responsibility. Then, think of positive ways you can approach these circumstances. Start small by focusing on one issue at a time and apply principles of positive psychology with selftalk and a good attitude.

Are you a glass-half-empty person, or a glass-half-full one?

Get in touch with the inner workings of your mind by asking yourself if you fall into any of these thought patterns: All or nothing: I didn’t do it perfectly, so I failed.

Jumping to conclusions:

Things aren’t going well now, so obviously

The Power of Positive Thinking

it’s not going to end well.

Emotional reasoning: I feel she doesn’t like me, so it must be true, even though there is no evidence to back it up.

Overgeneralizing: I didn’t make my sales quota this month, so I’m a terrible salesperson.

Mental filter: I got one negative comment on my social media post, and even though there were 20 positive comments, it must have been a bad post.

Find Good

In The World

Optimists seem to have different ways of dealing with the world that set them apart from the average. Optimists look for the good in every problem or difficulty.

When things go wrong, as they often do, they say, “That’s good!” They then set about finding something positive about the situation.

What we know is that, if you are looking for something good or beneficial in a person or situation, you will always find it. And while you are looking, you will be a more positive and cheerful person. An excellent way to find more good in the world is to develop better coping skills. Try some of these ways: Make meaningful connections with family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, or groups. Focus on finding solutions instead of worrying about the problem. Look for opportunities to learn new things. Accept change as a natural part of life, and understand you can’t change some things. Face challenges head-on instead of ignoring them or wishing they’d go away. Keep things in perspective by not blowing a situation out of proportion.

Take care of yourself by eating healthy, exercising, and relaxing.

Be Clear About Your Goals

Optimists keep their minds on what they want and keep looking for ways to get it. They are clear about their goals and they are confident that they will accomplish them, sooner or later.

Focus on what you want out of life and make a plan to move forward. Don’t allow setbacks to discourage you. Instead, remind yourself that positive things can come out of all situations.

Refrain from comparing yourself to others.

You are a unique individual who has your own story to tell.

Successful people define what is most important to them and prioritize the activities of their daily lives so that they will meet their goals, despite tough situations, distractions from the outside world, or the negative aspects or attitudes of others. Goal setting gives meaning to your life. It gives you something meaningful to focus on and provides a reason to have a daily to-

do list of important things to accomplish. When you reach goals or the small milestones that lead to your final destination, you increase your self-esteem and motivation, both of which make you a more positive thinker.

Practice Positive Affirmations

Positive affirmations are positive phrases that can be repeated over and over to teach you how to get rid of negative thoughts and encourage a positive outlook.

Peer-reviewed studies support the benefits of affirmations. For example, a recent study conducted by members of James Cook University in Australia found that self-affirmations have a positive effect on coping skills and well-being. A positive person thinks positive thoughts and uses positive words. Choose your words carefully in speaking, writing, and thinking.

The words you choose affect how others respond to you. Stop complaining and make a habit of sharing positive information. Stay positive by choosing words like “I can,” “I will try,” “It is possible,” and “I am capable.” Add positive affirmations to your morning routine, such as “I am happy with who I am right now, ” “I am confident,” “I am strong,” “I am enough,” and “I choose to be happy.”

Add Positivity To Your Everyday Life

Positive people help you to change your own attitude to have a more positive outlook. Surround yourself with people who make you feel confident, optimistic, and encouraged. Identify the negative people in your life and find ways to distance yourself from them or improve the relationship.

Watch and listen to positive media, including upbeat music, news, and social media posts. Read books, articles, and blog posts that boost your positive mindset. Even colors and images affect your attitude. Pay attention to the way your home and office are decorated. Hang photographs and pictures that make you think positive thoughts and help you maintain a positive attitude. Use colors in your surroundings that make you happy.

I also find motivation from inspirational quotes and messages to be very useful when trying to induce positive thoughts. Keep a collection of positive quotes in a journal, on your Pinterest board, in the notes on your phone, or in a document on your computer, and refer to them often.

Decide To Be Happy And Have A Positive Outlook

While it is healthy to have sad moments when circumstances call for it, you can maintain an overall positive outlook on life. Resolve from now to see your glass of life as half full rather than half empty.

Happy people give thanks for the many blessings in life rather than worrying or complaining about the things they do not have. Assume the best of intentions on the part of everyone around you. Most people are pretty decent, honest, and trying to do the very best they know how to. When you look for something good in their words and actions, you will almost always find something. Looking on the bright side is most important when things go wrong. It helps you to find perspective, cope, and have hope that things will get better.

Feel Grateful

When you practice gratitude, you look at your life in a more positive way. You notice the things that are going well, the aspects of your life that bring joy, and the random acts of kindness others extend to you. Spend time each day cultivating a positive mindset by writing what you are grateful for in your gratitude journal. Take note of positive events, feelings, and circumstances. You will find this one habit will improve your mental health and well-being and soon positive thinking will be natural to you. Writing regularly in your gratitude journal creates a habit of guiding your thoughts toward what you are grateful for.

So, in the same way that you write down your thankfulness, you will find yourself automatically thinking of gratitude in every circumstance you find yourself in during the day.

Smile, Play, And Laugh More Often

A simple smile can turn a bad day into a good one. Harness the power a smile has on yourself and others by making a habit of smiling more often.

Find reasons to smile and let yourself be happy.Taking time to play is helpful to maintaining a positive outlook. Schedule time for recreation and spending time with people you like doing things you enjoy. Have a playful attitude.

When you stop complaining about negative situations and find humor instead, you are able to breathe deeply and diffuse stress. Smiling, playing, and laughing help reduce stress, which makes you happier and healthier, naturally leading to positive thinking.

Three Conservative MPs who met with far-right German politician will stay in caucus

Poilievre has said the Conservative Party does not share Christine Anderson’s views. Carrie, who represents the riding of Oshawa, expressed his regret on social media more than a week ago. Neither Allison nor Lewis has responded to multiple requests for comment.

On Monday, Poilievre took a different tack when asked about the issue by trying to turn the tables on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau rather than reiterating his earlier comments. “Right now, what I’m more concerned about is the vile and racist views of the prime minister,” he told reporters, pointing to reports during the 2019 federal election campaign that Trudeau had worn blackface several times before entering politics. Trudeau apologized on the campaign trail after the news came out.

When asked directly on Monday whether he intends to remove Lewis, Allison or Carrie from caucus, the Conservative leader answered: “No.” Under rules established by the 2014 Reform Act, which the current Conservative caucus voted to adhere to after the 2021 election, a vote would be required to expel an MP.

That was the case for former representative Derek Sloan, whose ouster before the last election was initiated by former Conservative leader Erin O’Toole.O’Toole triggered a vote in response to reports that Sloan had accepted a political donation from a known white nationalist, citing a “pattern of destructive behaviour.”

The caucus turfed the former leader himself under a similar Reform Act provision. Source: cbc.ca

BRING THE JOY OF RAMADAN & EID TO THE LESS FORTUNATES

• YOUR $1 a day will support an orphan's livelihood

• $40 will buy basic groceries for a family for a month;

After taking weeks to consider the Senate’s changes to the Liberals’ contentious online streaming legislation known as Bill C-11, Canadian Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez has confirmed he’s rejecting several of the amendments made. While the Liberals are poised to accept the majority of legislative adjustments made in the upper chamber during its longest-ever study of a piece of government legislation, they are turning down a few of the Senate’s more consequential changes and suggesting further tweaks to others. This means Bill C-11 may be heading for a legislative showdown. The long-languishing legislation is aimed at substantively updating Canada’s Broadcasting Act regime for the first time since 1991, to ensure social media and streaming giants like TikTok and Netflix are subjected to Canadian content requirements and regulations comparable to traditional broadcasters. While many in

In a message sent to the Senate, Rodriguez outlined which of the 26 amendments to 12 clauses the Liberals will be allowing. The federal government’s response is set to be debated by MPs in the House of Commons later on Wednesday. If the take-some-andleave-some approach is accepted, Bill C-11 will pass and soon become law, allowing the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to get to work on implementing the coinciding regulatory changes granting that body new powers. But, should the Senate seek to stand its ground on certain changes, the amendments may become subject of procedural pingpong between the two chambers.”I want to thank the senators for all their work on this very important bill,” Rodriguez told reporters on Wednesday. “This is a bill that spent the most time in the Senate in the history of Canada… There’s been lots of debate.”

“And we’re accepting a vast majority of the Senate amendments but some that could create a loophole, we’re not accepting,” the minister said.Source: cbc.ca

Falcon failed the people of Surrey on healthcare, says Dix

In today’s Question Period, Health Minister Adrian Dix highlighted Kevin Falcon’s refusal to build a second hospital and a second medical school for Surrey.

In 2012, thenFinance Minister Kevin Falcon announced a plan to sell off land set aside for a second hospital, calling the land “surplus. Dix said Falcon was “the person who sold the land. The person who stopped the second Surrey hospital being built - after he promised it.” said Dix. “That person shouldn’t be talking about hospital care in Surrey. We build the hospital. He sells the land.”

Dix also highlighted Falcon’s decision to reject a 2008 proposal for a second medical school, which would have been located in Surrey. “In 2008, there was a proposal from the Fraser Health Authority and SFU to build a second medical school in Surrey. Who was against it? He was against it.” said Dix.

“And now Honourable Speaker, the medical school and the hospital that he stopped, he’s complaining about. We are building a second medical school. We are building a second hospital.” Media contact: Caelen Cook

Babar Azam hits maiden PSl century, breaks records

Zalmi, to win this year’s PSL under his leadership. He also stated that his ultimate aim is to win the 2023 World Cup in India. “I have a lot to achieve, but my main goal is to score maiden PSL century in this year’s season and win PSL for Peshawar Zalmi. I also want to win this year’s ICC World Cup 2023 scheduled in India, and I want my country to be named the winning side,” said Babar.

Mr.

The Zalmi skipper achieved the milestone in 60 balls.

Babar Azam has achieved one of his goals for this year as he brought up his maiden PSL century on Wednesday against Quetta Gladiators in Rawalpindi. The Zalmi skipper achieved the milestone in 60 balls, while hitting 15 fours and three sixes. Babar went onto score 115 runs off 65 balls, which helped his team reach a mammoth total of 240/2.

Babar also became the first batsman in PSL history to hit 15 fours in an innings. However, Jason Roy broke this record an hour later in the same match, as he smashed 20 fours in his record-breaking unbeaten 145-run innings. In an interview with Cricket Pakistan just before PSL season 8, Azam had said that he is aiming to score his maiden PSL century and wants his new franchise team, Peshawar

Positive Thinking Creates Positive Outcomes

Developing a positive attitude can help you in more ways than you might realize. When you think positive thoughts, you don’t allow your mind (conscious or subconscious) to entertain any negative thoughts or doubts. Positive thoughts can literally be the key to success. After you learn how to think positively, you will notice amazing changes all around you. Your brain will actually begin to operate in a state of free-flowing feel-good hormones called endorphins, which will make you feel lighter and happier. You’ll

also notice a major boost in confidence and will feel more capable of taking on new assignments and challenges that might have previously been outside your comfort zone. By reducing your self-limiting beliefs, you will effectively release your brakes and experience growth like you never imagined. Essentially, you can change your entire life simply by harnessing the power of positive thinking. Begin now to harness the power of positive thinking by practicing these habits to keep a positive attitude.

The metaphor of the boiling frog seems to capture quite aptly how Pakistan’s economy has been driven into abject despair over the past few months. The myth goes that a frog, if dumped into boiling water, will struggle, jump out and escape, but if placed in tepid water that is gradually brought to a boil, it will ignore the danger till it dies. The story illustrates the dangers of not acting against threats that are building up slowly over time. In the example illustrated by the metaphor, the “creeping normality” of slowly warming water ultimately proves deadly for the frog. In Pakistan’s case, our financial managers’ inability to act against the creeping normality of eventual default has brought us to the edge of a gruesome fate. The political question, of course, is: what timeline do we put on this period of inaction? Those familiar with the trajectory of Pakistan’s economy would argue that we were always doomed to be where we are now. A country that consumes far more than it produces, and finances its growing deficits with more loans rather than increasing its capacity to produce, was always bound to end up where we are now. There is no denying the fundamental soundness of that argument. Yet, there is also no denying the fact that we may just have avoided this painful reckoning had it not been for the disastrous antics of our current Finance Minister Ishaq Dar. Just why Nawaz Sharif and his daughter, Maryam Nawaz, chose to impose him on the country in the midst of a raging crisis defies understanding. Even when the help from friendly countries that he kept prom-

ising repeatedly failed to materialise, the finance minister refused to budge from this line

Their party, the PML-N, had spent three odd years condemning and criticising the PTI government, describing its leaders as unfit, inexperienced and having no grasp on Pakistan’s economic realities. One would have assumed, given the self-confidence with which it launched into those tirades, that the N-league’s “more experienced” finance team would have the answers to Pakistan’s predicament when it took over last April. It seemed for a short while that it did. Mr Ismail, for all his faults, seemed aware of the looming danger and struggled proactively — and ultimately, successfully — to revive the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme. Yet it was clear even then that not many within his party agreed with his approach.

In swooped Mr Dar with a snake oil pitch. He discredited Mr Ismail’s rationalist approach, which involved continuing to build trust with the IMF, and instead started running after foreign benefactors to convince them to part with billions of dollars from their wealth without having any convincing reason why. And, just like that, back into the now simmering water we went.
