PM’s trip to luxurious Prospect estate cost taxpayers $160,000.
Opposition leaders slammed what they called Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s “lack of judgment” Tuesday after it was revealed he spent his Christmas vacation at the Jamaica home of a wealthy donor to the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation.
Radio-Canada reported that Trudeau vacationed at Prospect, a “luxurious estate” with seaside villas owned by the Green family. Alexander and Andrew Green made a large donation to the foundation in 2021 to estab-
lish a scholarship in memory of their mother. The Jamaica trip cost taxpayers roughly $160,000 because of travel-related security and personnel costs. The French-language arm of the CBC said some staff were also put up at a nearby all-inclusive resort, which cost the federal treasury. Trudeau was reprimanded by Canada’s ethics commissioner over a 2016 vacation to the Aga Khan’s private island in the Bahamas — another trip that saddled taxpayers with the tens of thousands of dollars in costs that come when the prime minister travels abroad. Speaking to reporters on Parliament Hill, Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet said it’s not enough that Trudeau had the Jamaica trip pre-approved by the ethics commissioner. Blanchet said the trip raises questions about Trudeau’s capacity to lead the country. “He didn’t hear the little voice saying to him, ‘Maybe you shouldn’t do this,’” Blanchet said... Source: cbc.ca/
Canada will no longer refer to monarch as ‘Defender of the Faith’ King Charles, Canada’s head of state, will no longer include the phrase “Defender of the Faith” in his official royal title in Canada.
A change to Canada’s Royal Styles and Titles Act was first previewed in a brief mention on the final page of last month’s federal budget document, but that quick hint did not lay out exactly the new king’s full title.
The new language was revealed late Monday when the Liberal government published its notice of the Ways and Means Motion for this spring’s budget implementation bill — the legislation that actually brings into force the measures Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland announced on March 28.
The new title will read: “Charles the Third, by the Grace of God King of Canada and His other Realms and Territories, Head of the Commonwealth.” The title for his mother as the Queen of Canada, last updated in 1985 legislation, was “Queen Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God of the United

ISLAMABAD: A meeting of the heads of ruling parties summoned by the prime minister to evolve a consensus on the issue of holding a dialogue with the PTI has seemingly split the alliance into two camps.
One side, led by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is said to be favouring of talks with the opposition party on the issue of national importance, whereas the JUI-F and Jamhoori Watan Party strongly oppose to the idea. The overtly hawkish PML-N, however, says it is “still holding consultations” regarding talks with the opposition. Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, however, continued to blame the PTI chairman for a stalemate in the dialogue process. Speaking to journalist Talat Hussain, he said the former premier had categorically rejected their offer for dialogue in the past. Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, however, told Dawn “consultations were in progress” within the party on the option of initiating talks with the PTI. She also denied media reports that there was a difference of opinion within the coalition,
saying that all decisions would be made aftera consensus was reached. “Parties may have different opinions, but our decisions are made with consensus,” she added.

Sources said that during the meeting, PPP chief Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari reiterated his party’s stance that the government should hold talks with the PTI on issues of national importance and that shutting the door on dialogue was against democratic and political norms, as well as PPP’s principles. Mr Bhutto-Zardari was backed by BAP leader Khalid Magsi, Chaudhry Salik Hussain of PML-Q, and Mohsin Dawar in his demand.

.OTTAWA - Canada’s largest federal public-service union says that some 155,000 workers will go on strike after talks with the government failed to produce an agreement before its Tuesday night deadline.
The Public Service Alliance of Canada said strike action would begin Wednesday at 12:01 a.m. EDT.
Chris Aylward, the union’s national president, said the bargaining teams would remain at the table throughout the strike. “We are still a ways apart, but we’re staying at the table because we’re still hopeful and our goal is still to get a tentative agreement,” Aylward said during a brief press conference Tuesday night. “We will remain at the table until we reach a tentative agreement if the employer is prepared to stay at the table as well.” The bargaining groups involve some 155,000 federal public servants, including
35,000 Canada Revenue Agency workers. Mediated contract negotiations between the Public Service Alliance of Canada and the government began in early April and continued through the weekend in what the union describes as the government’s last chance to reach a deal. Wage increases have been top of mind at the bargaining table, and the union has also pushed for workfrom-home options to be written into a new collective agreement.
Negotiations over the new contract first began in June 2021, with the union declaring an impasse in May 2022 and both parties filing labour complaints since then.
The union called a strike vote in January and it announced that members had voted in favour of a strike mandate early last week.
“Our members are pumped,” Aylward said, adding “They’re prepared to fight for a good, decent, fair collective agreement.”
Treasury Board President Mona Fortier told reporters Tuesday afternoon that she was optimistic a deal would be struck by the deadline.“We have a competitive and fair wage on the table and also that is reasonable to Canadians. ISLAMABAD: The defence ministry on Tuesday requested the Supreme Court to recall its April 4 order that had fixed May 14 as the election date for the Punjab Assembly.
The request was made through an application along with a report, laid before the Supreme Court in compliance with its directives to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and other departments to furnish reports after releasing Rs21 billion to the ECP for holding elections to the Punjab and KP assemblies. It is likely that the three-member bench would take up these reports in chambers on Wednesday (today) and the matter is likely to be taken up in the open court for hearing on Wednesday or Thursday. The defence ministry, in its application, requested the apex court to issue directives that general elections to the national and all provincial assemblies be held simultaneously upon completion of the terms of national as well as Sindh and Balochistan assemblies. Defence ministry says armed forces will be available for election duty by Oct; ECP warns against ‘staggered polls’; matter may be taken up in open court today
The report contained, for the most part, the same contentions which the head of the Inter-Services Intelligence, director general of military opera-
tions and the defence secretary presented to the chief justice and two other judges during a nearly three-hour in-chamber briefing on Monday, as well as the in-camera briefing earlier given to parliament. The report also highlighted the need of holding the elections on the same day in view of the heightened security situation in the country, saying that the armed forces would be able to carry out election duties by early October.
“Due to the prevalent security situation and counter-terrorism operations being carried out in KP and Balochistan as well as the intelligence-based operations in Punjab and Sindh, the armed forces, Rangers, Frontier Constabulary and other forces are not logistically available to be repositioned and re-posted for providing election security, twice in a span of six months,”
Meteorologist predicts intensifying heatwave as country records highest temperature of the year
The country today recorded highest temperature of this year amid a prediction that the prevailing medium to low heatwave may turn to a severe heatwave.
The temperature in Dhaka reached 40.2ºC today, the highest recorded in the capital so far this year. Khalilur Rahman, meteorological assistant at Bangladesh Meteorological Department, confirmed the news to The Daily Star.
He also said the mercury climbed to 41.7ºC in Chuadanga, which was the highest recorded so far this year. The record temperatures come as a meteorologist at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department on Thursday said the country was likely to witness a severe heatwave starting from Friday or Saturday.
Currently, a mild to moderate heatwave is sweeping over all divisions of the country except Rangpur, according to a BMD bulletin yesterday.
“A severe heatwave is likely to continue till April 16,” Md Bazlur Rashid, meteorologist of BMD, told The Daily Star. He said the weather may return to normal after that. The meteorologist also said that as the humidity is low, the heat feels intolerable this year, but humidity will also increase from April 16.A heatwave occurs when the daily maximum temperature tops 36ºC over a large area and it is classified into three categories based on temperature -- mild, moderate, and severe... Eid ul Fitr, known as ’عيد الفطر’ in Arabic and Asian countries, is a religious festival for all Muslims around the world. Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Eid al Fitr is Allah’s reward for believers who fasted during the holy month of Ramadan. This is also believers thanking Allah for giving them the chance and the strength to carry out His commands during the blessed month of Ramadan. Traditionally, Eid al Fitr is celebrated for three days in almost all Muslim countries.
Both Eid ul Fitr and Eid Al-Adha have great significance in Islam as the same is evident from the following Hadith: Narrated that Anas bin Malik (R.A.), who said:“Allah has given you better than those feasts (festivals of non-believers): the ‘Eidul-Adha’ and ‘Eid-ul-Fitr’”
(An-Nasai: 1556)
Remember one thing that Fasting on Eid days i-e Eid ul-Fitr and Eid al-Adha is forbidden as the same is evident from the following Hadith:
Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri (R.A.) that Prophet (S.A.W.) said: “No fasting is permissible on the two days of Eid-ul-Fitr and EId-ul-Adha.”(Sahih Bukhari: 1995)
Since it is a religious festival, Muslims all over the world celebrate this event with much fervor and each country’s celebrations vary as there is an influence of their traditions. Muslims all over the world celebrate the festival of Eid al Fitr by starting the day with the Eid prayer. After offering prayer, Muslim greet each other with the customary Eid greeting, ‘Eid Mubarak’. Everyone gets new clothes made for the
special occasion because every single person wants to look his/her best. The day is spent with friends and family get-togethers, indulging in delicious feasts and handing out gifts also known as Eidi. Eid-ul-Fitr is a time of happiness and enjoyment, and this is also evident from the following Hadith:
It was narrated by Aisha (R.A.) who reported that Prophet (S.A.W.) said to Abu Bakr (R.A.) (On the day of Eid when Abu Bakr (R.A.) saw two girls were singing the stories about the Day of Buath in Madinah): “O Abu Bakr! Every people have their Eid and this is our Eid.”(Sahih Bukhari: 952) In another narration, it is said that Allah’s Messenger (S.A.W.) said to Abu Bakr (R.A.): “Let them be O Abu Bakr, for these are days of Eid.”
EID PRAYER
Religious scholars have differing opinions on Eid prayers. However, all Muslims should attend prayers of both Eids as most scholars, on the basis of strong evidence, is of opinion that it is Wajib (obligation). One of the purposes behind Eid Prayer is to provide an opportunity to a large number of Muslims to attend congregations in an atmosphere of religious piety. Apart from prayer, the Eid sermon (after Eid Prayer) has also been made an integral part of this gathering and the prayer.
It is important and compulsory for a Muslim to pay ‘Zakat-ul-Fitr’ before offering Eid Prayer. (Sahih Bukhari: 1511)
The time for Eid Prayer begins from the time the sun is three meters above the horizon until the sun reaches its meridian. However, it is better to offer the prayer in the early hours after sunrise. (Abu Dawud:
What is the ruling on fasting six days of Shawwal? Is it obligatory?
Summary of answer
Whoever fasts six days of Shawwal will have recorded for him a reward as if he had fasted a whole year. For more, please see the detailed answer.
Is Shawwal fasting obligatory?
Fasting six days of Shawwal after the obligatory fast of Ramadan is Sunnah Mustahabbah, not wajib. It is recommended for the Muslim to fast six days of Shawwal , and in this there is great virtue and an immense reward.
Virtues of fasting 6 days of Shawwal
Whoever fasts these six days will have recorded for him a reward as if he had fasted a whole year, as was reported in a sahih hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days of Shawwal , it will be as if he fasted for a lifetime.” (Narrated by Muslim, Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasai and Ibn Majah).
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) explained this when he said: “Whoever fasts for six days after (‘Eid) al-Fitr has completed the year: (whoever does a good deed (hasanah) will have ten hasanah like it).” According to another
report: “Allah has made for each hasanah ten like it, so a month is like fasting ten months, and fasting six days completes the year.” (al-Nasai and Ibn Majah. See also Sahih al-Targhib wa’l-Tarhib, 1/421)
It was also narrated by Ibn Khuzaymah with the wording: “Fasting for the month of Ramadan brings the reward of ten like it, and fasting for six days brings the reward of two months, and that is the fasting of the whole year.”
The Hanbali and Shafi’i fuqaha explained that fasting six days of Shawwal after fasting Ramadan makes it as if one has fasted for an entire year of obligatory fasts, because the multiplication of the reward applies even to nafl fasts, because each hasanah brings the reward of ten like it. Another of the important benefits of fasting six days of Shawwal is that it makes up for any shortfall in a person’s obligatory Ramadan fasts, because no one is free of shortcomings or sins that have a negative effect on his fasting.
On the Day of Resurrection, some of his nafl deeds will be taken to make up the shortcomings in his obligatory deeds, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The first thing for which people will be brought to account on the Day of Resurrection will be their salah (prayer). Our Lord, may He be glorified and exalted, will say to His angels – although He knows best – ‘Look at the salah of My slave, whether it is complete or incomplete.’ If it is perfect, it will be recorded as perfect, and if something is
Abu Ayyub reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever fasts the month of Ramadan and then follows it with six days of fasting in the month of Shawwal, it will be as if he has fasted for the entire year.”

Eid Prayer is performed without any ‘Iqmah’ or ‘Athan’. [Sahih Muslim: 885 (b)]
Eid prayer consists of two Rak’at (Two Unit Prayer) during which Takbeer (Allahu-Akbar) is announced seven times. (Abu Dawud: 1149)
The rest of the Eid prayer is the same as other prayers offered daily.
After completing the prayer, it is Sunnah (some scholars say that it is Wajib) to listen to the Sermon (Khutbah) after Eid Prayer. So one should stay for the Imam’s sermon to end after completing the Eid Prayer. After listening to the sermon, Muslims congratulate each other with greetings such as ‘Eid Mubarak’, ‘Happy Eid, and عيد مبارك, etc. However, the most common Eid Greeting Muslims like to wish their friends and fellow Muslims with, is ‘Eid Mubarak’.
Sunnah of
Prayer
A person should follow the teachings of the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.) for every aspect of life. The same should also be applied to Eid Prayer. Following are some of the Sunnah of Prophet (S.A.W.) with regards to Eid prayer that every Muslim should follow:
1- Take a bath or perform ablution before going for a prayer.
2- Use a toothbrush or Miswaak.
3- Wear your best clothes on this day.
4- Apply perfume.
5- Eat an odd number of dates before leaving for the prayer of Eid Al-Fitr. (Sahih Bukhari: 953)
6- Make sure that you have paid Zakat AlFitr before offering Eid Prayer.
7- Recite the following ‘Takbeerat’ while going to and returning from Eid Prayer: Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar, Allahu akbar laa ilaaha illAllaah, wa Allaahu akbar, Allaah akbar, wa Lillaah il-hamd (Allah is Most Great, Allaah is most Great, Allah is most Great there is no god but Allaah, Allaah is Most Great, Allaah is most great, and to Allaah be praise) (Irwa Al Ghalil: 3 / 125)
8- Listen to the Sermon (Khutbah) after offering Eid Prayer. (An-Nasai: 1517)
9- Use different ways while going to and returning from the mosque after offering Eid Prayer. (Sahih Bukhari: 986)

lacking, He will say, ‘Look and see whether My slave did any voluntary (nafl) prayers.’ If he did some voluntary prayers, [Allah] will say, Complete the obligatory actions of My slave from his voluntary actions.’ Then all his actions will be dealt with in a similar manner.” (Narrated by Abu Dawud). Lawyer said Global Affairs Canada confirmed the women’s whereabouts after missing for 11 days. Two Canadian women and three teenage girls who were set to be repatriated from camps for family members of ISIS suspects in Syria were instead detained and mistreated by their Kurdish guards rather than being taken to their pick-up point, their lawyer says. The women have been missing ever since the repatriation flight to Canada took off without them more than 10 days ago. Edmonton lawyer Zachary Al-Khatib told CBC News that one of the women was able to make a short phone call to a relative Tuesday before the line dropped after 4 minutes. The woman said the five
of them had been detained and mistreated by Kurdish authorities in what’s known as “Red Prison” at al-Hol camp and at a second prison, said Al-Khatib. “They were in real distress,” Al-Khatib said. “There was a very short proof-of-life call. They wanted to come back to Canada.” Al-Khatib said the women require medical attention and are in need of assistance. He said he doesn’t know why his clients were in Syria and he hasn’t seen a “shred of evidence these two women travelled for the purposes of joining ISIS.”
Al-Khatib said he received an email from Global Affairs Canada on Tuesday informing him the government had received information from multiple sources indicating that the five Canadians are now at the al-Roj camp in northeastern Syria.
The Al-Roj camp is the location the Canadian government used as a meeting place earlier this month for those it brought back to Canada. The camps hold ISIS suspects and their family members. Source:cbc.ca/

TEHRAN, IRAN - Iran’s president on Tuesday reiterated threats against Israel while marking the country’s annual Army Day, though he stayed away from criticizing Saudi Arabia as Tehran seeks a detente with the kingdom.
The comments by Ebrahim Raisi came as fighter jets and helicopters flew overhead in Tehran, and as Iranian submarines sailed across its waters during a ceremony carried live by state television.
The day celebrates Iran’s regular military, not its paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, whose expeditionary forces operate across the wider Mideast and aid Iranian-allied militia groups like Lebanon’s Hezbollah. The Guard also routinely has tense encounters with the U.S. Navy. Speaking at the ceremony, Raisi threatened Israel, which is suspected of carrying out a series of attacks targeting Iran since the collapse of its nuclear deal with world powers. “Enemies, particularly the Zionist regime, has receive the message that any tiny action against (our) country will prompt a harsh answer from the armed forces, which will accompany the destruction of Haifa and Tel Aviv,” Raisi said.
Raisi also reiterated a demand for the U.S. to leave the Mideast. American policy since the Carter administration has viewed protected
the Persian Gulf region as crucial to securing global energy supplies. A fifth of the world’s supply of oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf. While not specifically naming Saudi Arabia, Raisi did offer an olive branch in his remarks. “The hand of our armed forces warmly shakes the hand of the regional nations that intend to create security in the region,” the president said. In March, Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed to reestablish diplomatic relations and reopen embassies after seven years of tensions, a diplomatic agreement reached in China. India’s Supreme Court today questioned the paroles granted to 11 convicts during their incarceration in the infamous Bilkis Bano gang-rape case relating to the 2002 Gujarat state riots and said the gravity of the offence could have been considered by the state.
A bench of Justices KM Joseph and BV Nagarathna said a pregnant woman was gang-raped and several people were killed, reports our New Delhi correspondent.
“You cannot compare the victim’s case with standard (Indian Penal Code) section 302
“The question is whether government applied its mind and what material formed the basis of its decision to grant remission” of sentence to the convicts, the bench said, adding, “Today it is Bilkis but tomorrow it can be anyone. It may be you or me. If you do not show your reasons for grant of remission, then we will draw our own conclusions.” The bench posted the petitions challenging the remission to the convicts in the Bilkis Bano case for final disposal on May 2.
Bilkis Bano was 21 years old and five months pregnant when she was gang-raped while fleeing the riots that broke out after a train carrying 56 pilgrims from Ayodhya was set afire in Godhra, Gujarat, in February, 2002.

One-hundred-and-twenty-three students have been counselled so far this year for violent behaviour, using drugs in school, sex-related offences, mental health issues and other negative behaviour arising from social media use. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro said this as he commissioned Fiji’s first Student Support Services Hub at Natabua High School in Lautoka on Friday. The 123 were given counselling assistance by the Substance Abuse Advisory Council under the Education Ministry. The Australian Government financed and provided technical support to establish the hub.“The support service hub as such will allow students to freely and confidently share their problems without being judged or criticised,” Mr Radrodro said. He said mental health awareness for students was crucial to ensure they were better able to learn and be more inclined to make the most of their abilities.
The Student Support Services Hub is a partnership pilot project of the Australian Government through Fiji’s Support to Fiji’s Education Sector and the Fiji Government through the Ministry of Education. There are plans to have hubs set up in the Northern, Central and Eastern divisions. Teenagers have been appearing in court for a range of sexual and non-sexual serious
crimes in recent years.
According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, of the 24 people charged with sex offences in March this year, two were juveniles. A 13-year-old boy was charged with the rape of his 6-yearold nephew while in another incident, a 17-year-old boy was charged with the rape of his 9-year-old niece.
The ODPP also said of the 58 people charged with serious (non-sexual) crimes last month, 10 juveniles were charged with aggravated robbery, burglary, aggravated burglary and theft offences.
In February, a 14-year-old boy was charged with the rape and sexual assault of his 4-year-old cousin while in another incident, a 13-year-old boy was charged with the rape and sexual assault of his 9-year-old niece, and a 16-year-old boy was charged with the rape of a 13-year-old girl.

Heavy gunfire shattered a 24-hour truce in Sudan on Tuesday shortly after it was due to take effect under US pressure on warring military factions to halt fighting that has touched off a humanitarian crisis.
Loud shooting reverberated in the background of live feeds by Arab television news channels in the Khartoum capital region minutes after the agreed 6:00 pm (1600 GMT) onset of the ceasefire. Warplanes were roaring in the skies above Khartoum, a Reuters reporter heard tanks firing shortly after the truce was due to take hold, and a resident told Reuters he heard an air strike being carried out in Omdurman,
Khartoum’s sister city on the opposite bank of the Nile river. Several witnesses reported a large army ground force entering the city from the east. The regular army and the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) issued statements accusing each other of failing to respect the ceasefire. The army’s high command said it would continue operations to secure the capital and other regions. ”We have not received any indications here that there’s been a halt in the fighting,” United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric told a news briefing in New York.
The conflict between Sudan’s military leader and his deputy on Sudan’s ruling council erupted four days ago, derailing an internationally backed plan for a transition to a civilian democracy four years after the fall of Islamist autocrat Omar al-Bashir to mass protests and two years after a military coup.
The fighting has triggered what the United Nations has described as a humanitarian catastrophe, including the near collapse of the health system. The U.N.’s World Food Programme suspended operations after three of its employees were killed.

first attempt to estimate countrywide deaths in a crisis that experts warn is more severe than the country’s last major drought in 2017 and 2018. Led by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the study warned that the rate of fatalities could rise in the first half of 2023 as it projected total deaths for this period from 18,100 to 34,200.
“These results present a grim picture of the devastation brought on children and their families by the drought,” UNICEF’s Wafaa Saeed said as he presented the report in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu.
After five consecutive failed rainy seasons, rate of fatalities could rise in first half of 2023, research finds. Somalia’s ongoing record drought may have killed as many as 43,000 people last year, and half of them were children under the age of five, according to a report released by the government and United Nations agencies.
The research released on Monday marked the

IHAVE a confession to make: there is not much left to say this week. The political crisis, the economic meltdown and the constitutional impasse — all seem to have been done to death. There is a brain freeze in my upper storey, and sadly, it has nothing to do with ice cream. I was tempted to write about the food shows on Netflix, which are of such great comfort in these crazy times; none of them are about a contest but just food, like Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat by Samin Nosrat or The Chef’s Table. Restful stuff! I was tempted to pontificate a bit about food shows and their universal appeal — an issue the likes of The New Yorker have covered in detail. But would it hide the brain freeze?
But then, desperation is the mother of necessity, and a book came to mind. Not a recent publication (it was published in 2017), but it’s still worth a read because the issues it dealt with are still relevant. For, despite its focus, it does provide some food for thought about the mess in our confused land.
Called The Rise of the Outsider; How mainstream politics lost its way, by Steve Richards, it seeks to explain the emergence, or rather the popularity, of the mavericks in politics; from Donald Trump, to Boris Johnson, to others. The author’s argument doesn’t just go back to the 2008 crisis, as common wisdom suggests, but even further to the left’s strategy in response to the 1980s — as in how, say, Bill Clinton and Tony Blair clawed their way through the election losses of their respective parties by shifting closer to the centre.
This centrism by both the left and the right wing, however, didn’t provide any answers to the people whose standards of living kept plummeting; they faced politicians who all sounded the same, regardless of their parties and even policies. Everyone is now committed to the idea of keeping taxes and spending low; any suggestion to the contrary is deemed unacceptable.
The book aside, consider the reaction of mainstream media to people such as Jeremy Corbyn or Bernie Sanders if they suggest government spending on health or education. This orthodoxy, argues the author, has now gone so far that those on the left who do spend money to help the people are wary of admitting this publicly, strengthening the perception that there is little to choose from where the mainstream is concerned.
Even when the outsiders win, they have very little space to carry out the promised change. Enter the outsider, who is willing to make unrealistic and sweeping promises to the electorate and win them over, even if he or she has no real solutions to offer.
But to the people, who seem to now view traditional politicians as part of the same elite which looks and sounds the same, the outsider or populist manages to do two things appear to care more for the people than the traditional politicians because he is an ‘outsider’ and offer simplistic solutions which he can’t deliver on once in power. Sound familiar?
It’s a book which may be about a
part of the world quite different from Pakistan, but some of the parallels are simply eerie. However, it is worth noting the implicit bias in favour of the traditional politicians running throughout the book. The outsider, in each case, is either an opportunist or naïve, while the mainstream politicians come across as good guys, simply hemmed in by orthodoxy and the media.
For, in this case of good and bad guys, the good include Blair and Hilary Clinton, and the bad range from Trump to Corbyn. This is a bit of a generalisation, as may be the assumption that if the traditional politicians would be able to break away from restrictions, the populist, or rather the need for the populist, would disappear. But there is another point which provides food for thought: that even when the outsiders win, they have very little space to carry out the promised change because of the larger economic context, which was brought out especially well with the election of Alexis Tsipras in Greece.Tsipras was voted in because he and his finance minister, Yanis Varoufakis, were not in favour of the tough conditions imposed on the country by the European Union. The election and the referendum Tsipras later called for was a vote against the austerity imposed on the Greeks by the EU. Once in power, the two men realised it wasn’t easy to go against the prescriptions. Eventually, Varoufakis resigned and the prime minister contin-
ued to follow the very policies he had won the election against. That, perhaps, is a dilemma similar to what the leadership here faces; regardless of what one wants or promises the people. Consider that the PDM before April last year blamed PTI for inflation and high petrol prices, just as Imran Khan now attacks them for exactly the same. But once in power, none of the players enjoy the luxury to turn their backs on the IFIs’ policy prescriptions. There is very little space to deliver anything else because of the country’s dependence on the IMF programme. Of course, this will obviously raise the point about the need for structural reforms, such as broadening the tax burden instead of simply burdening the vulnerable, as every party is in the habit of doing. Nonetheless, it does highlight the limits of the basic debate within Pakistan — the solutions or the way forward are limited to ‘good’ or ‘bad’ prescriptions allowed under the IMF straitjacket. This is no longer the era where someone can swoop in à la Bhutto and prescribe something radical, such as nationalisation. Which is also one reason why the left no longer appears a viable option, for their policy options seem too far outside the realm of possibilities, while those such as the ‘reimagine’ lot are criticised for sticking to economic orthodoxy. The larger context will have to change before countries such as Pakistan have more space in terms of policy options.

The survey of 1,600 Canadians, released on Thursday, found that 34 per cent of Canadians are in “bad” or “terrible” shape financially, up six percentage points from last July. By comparison, 27 per cent of Canadians reported being in bad or terrible shape financially in April 2020, when governments put in place lockdown measures to try to curb the spread of COVID-19. “The fact that more describe themselves in bad shape financially now perhaps speaks to how challenging recent months have been for Canadians,” the survey from Angus Reid says.
The Bank of Canada held its key interest rate at 4.5 % in March after a year of increases to try to tackle inflation. The rate decision comes as the annual inflation rate remains high but continues to fall, reaching 5.2 per cent as of February. However, food inflation has remained even higher at around 10 per cent year-over-year.
The Angus Reid survey found more than half of Canadians making less than $50,000 a year said they were in bad or terrible financial shape.
For about 18 months now, around half of Canadians have also said that feeding their households has been difficult.
Forty-five per cent of Canadians in March said it was either difficult of very difficult compared to 51 per cent in September 2022, 49 per cent in May 2022 and 45 per cent in October 2021.
Sixty-seven per cent of Canadians say they reduced their discretionary spending due to the rising cost of living and as many as 40 per cent are withdrawing money from accounts they don’t normally touch.
Thirty-five per cent delayed contributions to their Registered Retire-
ment Savings Plans and Tax-Free Savings Accounts and 13 per cent of respondents say they borrowed money from family or friends. Forty-three per cent of Canadians are delaying a major purchase such as a home, car or major appliance, 11 per cent have sold an asset like a vehicle or stocks, and eight per cent have taken out a bank loan. Although average hourly wages were up 5.4 per cent in February compared to a year ago, 45 per cent of Canadians surveyed said they have not received additional compensation from their employers in the previous 12 months. This was higher among part-time workers at about 65 per cent compared to full-time workers at 42 per cent.
Workers in sales, retail and hospitality were the least likely to have gotten a raise, while managers and executives were the most likely to have received one.
Residents in Saskatchewan reported the highest financial struggles in the country, with 51 per cent saying they were in bad or terrible fi-

Atlantic Canada followed this at 45 per cent, including 20 per cent who said they were barely getting by – more than any other region in the country.
42% of Albertans and 36 per cent of B.C. residents said they were struggling financially.
The proportion of Manitobans saying they were struggling financially was slightly higher than the national average at 35 per cent.
Ontarians and Quebecers were the least likely to say they were struggling at 30 and 27% respectively.
The Angus Reid Institute conducted an online survey from March 30 to 31, 2023, among a representative randomized sample of 1,600 Canadian adults who are members of Angus Reid Forum. For comparison purposes only, a probability sample of this size would carry a margin of error of plus or minus two percentage points, 19 times out of 20. In Surrey, it comes on the heels of 17-yearold Ethan Bespflug, who died in hospital after he was fatally stabbed April 11 while riding a bus in the 9900-block of King George Boulevard. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is still looking for Bespflug’s killer.
and doctors are hopeful he can make a full recovery. Elsewhere in the Lower Mainland, there have been several other incidents of violence.
In Burnaby this week, transit police are investigating after a man allegedly assaulted passengers on a SkyTrain and then “attempted to slash” one of the officers with a knife. It happened on the SkyTrain’s Millenium Line on April 10.
Man in his 20s stabbed in abdomen at Surrey Central SkyTrain station. Police are investigating after another stabbing on transit in Surrey.
Just after 1 a.m. Saturday (April 15), Metro Vancouver Transit Police and Surrey RCMP responded to reports of a stabbing on board a train at Surrey Central SkyTrain station.
An emailed statement from transit police says a man in his 20s was found with a stab wound to his abdomen. He was taken to hospital but has since been released.
A suspect is not yet in custody, noted police, adding that it is “not yet known what led to stabbing but it does not appear to be linked to any of the previously reported incidents on transit.”This is the third stabbing on Sur-
Earlier this month a man was stabbed on a bus in Surrey in an alleged terrorist attack. Abdul Aziz Kawam is charged with attempted murder, assault causing bodily harm, aggravated assault and assault with a weapon, all in association with terrorist group the Islamic State. The victim suffered some vocal-chord damage, but the knife did not strike any major tendons or arteries,
Later that day, New Westminster Police responded to a stabbing at Columbia Station after an altercation between two groups. Police say the two groups didn’t know each other. Police are now looking for the three suspects: two men and a woman.
From :Tom Zytaruk, The Canadian Press Source: thefreepress.caNo one should have to fear for their physical safety or life when riding our transit system. In the last two weeks we have seen three shocking incidents that have caused serious bodily harm and in one case ended the life of a 17-year-old. On behalf of Surrey City Council, my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ethan Bespflug. As a mom, I cannot imagine the pain Ethan’s family is going through. There is no place for the continuing violent acts that are taking place on our regional transit system. What makes this situation all the more alarming is that it puts so many innocent people at risk,
as the attacks are often perpetrated in a confined space of a SkyTrain car or a bus. As it has been said, everyone has the right to feel safe on our regional transit system. I’ve been in regular contact with both the Surrey RCMP and the Metro Vancouver Transit Police as both agencies work together on increasing joint patrols. In addition to an increased police and security presence on transit, we are looking at a range of sustainable, long-term solutions to ensure everyone on Transit feels safe, and is safe. This includes the high visibility police patrols occurring now; however, that is only part
of the solution. We need to look at all potential tools at our disposal, including better use of technology, safety education and outreach, all forming part of a comprehensive approach.
I will be reaching out to the Premier, Solicitor General and Minister of Mental Health to ask for additional resources in policing and to make better use of technology to deter these crimes and identify the perpetrators. Mayor Brenda Locke

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh plans to introduce legislation to “rein in outrageous CEO pay” by increasing the taxes of companies where CEOs make “excessive” profits.
Singh told reporters Tuesday he’s taking a page from the books of U.S. Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren by introducing a private member’s bill that, if passed, would increase companies’ taxes based on a sliding scale: they could see increases ranging from 0.5 to 5 per cent depending on the size of the CEO’s salary compared to the median salary of a worker in their company.
“What this bill will propose to do
is to finally say clearly, that if you can afford to pay CEOs exorbitant salaries, then you should increase the wages of workers,” Singh said.
“This is to decrease inequality. This is to force companies to stop the inequality that continues to grow.”
According to the NDP, Singh’s bill would “be similar” to the U.S. Senate Tax Excessive CEOs Pay Act that the party claims would have seen some companies pay significantly more if it had been law in Canada in 2021, including:
• Loblaw paying up to $106 million more;
• Rogers paying pay up to $23 million more; and
• RBC paying up to $200 million more in taxes.
The NDP leader is currently near the top of the list of MPs eligible to table a private members bill, improving his chances of doing so before the end of session. While inflation has cooled in the last month — dropping to 4.3 per cent in March, according to the latest Consumer Price Index from Statistics Canada released Tuesday — grocery prices remain high. In his remarks, Singh called out grocery chains and their CEO’s salaries directly.
Singh on Tuesday mentioned several times the salary of outgoing
Loblaw president Galen Weston. It was announced Tuesday that Weston would be stepping away from the day-to-day operations of Loblaw, while staying on as chairperson of the board of directors and CEO of its parent company, George Weston Ltd. Weston was one of three grocery store CEOs and presidents to appear in March, before a parliamentary committee studying inflated grocery prices.
According to the Canadian Press, Weston’s compensation last year reached $11.7 million, a nearly $1.1-million increase from the year before, between both his roles as CEO of Loblaw and its holding company... Source:ctvnews.ca/

As all of us have come together to celebate Eid-UlFitr, we can spend our time expressing gratitude towards Allah having given us the opportunity to worship. We can use this time to reflect on the past month and appreciate the habits that served us well. The month of Ramadan has instilled many lessons in us including a deep spirit of service to our brothers and sisters and focusing on compassion towards humanity. We spent time reflecting on how our actions have consequences to others and being mindful of our words as they can often be fueled by emotions and have lasting effects on our brothers and sisters. We took the time to improve ourselves spiritually and morally. The fasts helped us connect with the struggles of the less
fortunate and the entire month of Ramadan was focused on being empathetic towards the pained in society and use the powers of the privilege for the greater good. The month of Ramadan signifies a new beginning as we create a stronger force with our brothers and sisters and Allah. There are many lessons we can take forward as we celebrate the end of this pious month.
1. Practice Gratitude
The evenings during the month of Ramadan are spent praying to Allah for the benefit and peace of our loved ones, seeking forgiveness for our sins, and safety for our family. During Eid, we celebrate the month of Ramadan and often return to our old ways. Most of us look forward to Ramadan due to the peace we feel during the holy month. The moments of silence and prayer filled with gratitude and well wishes are the foundation of habits that bring peace. It’s a lesson that we must continue these things beyond the holy month and as part of our days to create a life that is positive.
2. Detach from Worldly Comforts
During the month of Ramadan,
our focus is shifted from worldly comforts and pleasures to servicing humanity and Allah. The nature of our current society is focused entirely on money, material items, and overconsumption of all things. This creates a cycle of dissatisfaction and lack of contentment in life that follows us everywhere we go. As a response, we end up buying more, eating more, and focusing on how to be better in all ways from our neighbour. Detaching from the worldly comforts and materials is a quick road to achieving true happiness and peace in this life. The only focus on others we must havebeen to make sure that they have enough. The holy month of Ramadan helps instill this is in us but many of us fail to practise it for the remaining months.
3. Practice Spirituality
Many of us spend the month of Ramadan fasting and focusing on praying and develop a foundation for having a stronger connection to God. Our days can consist of any number of variables but has one constant which is reflecting on our blessings, forgiveness for our short-
comings, and requesting goodwishes from Allah. We make it a habit to pray and spend time with prayers, meditation, and peaceful moments of conversations with Allah that help us create a strong connection with our values and reinforces our blueprint to being a human in our society. Keeping the practice of spirituality can only result in positive impact in our daily life beyond the month of Ramadan.
4. Give Back to the Community
The month of Ramadan is a blessing to the pained and vulnerable members of our community. All of us join together to pool resources, funds, items, and services to people who need it most. We learn to sacrifice our pleasures to fulfil the needs of others. Most of us restrict charity to this month and go back to our old ways soon. The month of Ramadan teaches us to think of others first and then ourselves and we must take some effort to continue this practise beyond the holy month. The pleasure in giving
something to someone in need is far greater than engaging in excess for us. Our actions have a ripple effect where the person we helped will be able to help another in need.
• “Prepare yourself for Eid
• Wear new clothes of kindness, and never wear off
• Scent yourself with the perfume of love, and spread it everywhere
• Keep the sweet on the tongue and distribute it by heart to everyone
• Open Your Arms wide, hug everyone tight,
• Ego, anger, superiority, free your soul with these all
• to friends, to relatives, to strangers, gift beautiful feelings to all”

gins when some kidney cells develop changes (mutations) in their DNA. A cell’s DNA contains the instructions that tell a cell what to do. The changes tell the cells to grow and divide rapidly. The accumulating abnormal cells form a tumor that can extend beyond the kidney. Some cells can break off and spread (metastasize) to distant parts of the body.
overweight or obese, reduce the number of calories you consume each day and try to be physically active most days of the week. Ask your doctor about other healthy strategies to help you lose weight.
• Control high blood pressure. Ask your doctor to check your blood pressure at your next appointment. If your blood pressure is high, you can discuss options for lowering your numbers. Lifestyle measures such as exercise, weight loss and diet changes can help. Some people may need to add medications to lower their blood pressure. Discuss your options with your doctor.

By:Bradley Leibovich, M.D. Urologic oncologistKidney cancer is cancer that begins in the kidneys. Your kidneys are two bean-shaped organs, each about the size of your fist. They’re located behind your abdominal organs, with one kidney on each side of your spine. In adults, renal cell carcinoma is the most common type of kidney cancer. Other less common types of kidney cancer can occur. Young children are more likely to develop a kind of kidney cancer called Wilms’ tumor. The incidence of kidney cancer seems to be increasing. One reason for this may be the fact that imaging techniques such as computerized tomography (CT) scans are being used more often. These tests may lead to the accidental discovery of more kidney cancers. Kidney cancer is often discovered at an early stage, when the cancer is small and confined to the kidney.
Symptoms
Kidney cancer usually doesn’t have signs or symptoms in its early stages. In time, signs and symptoms may develop, including:
• Blood in your urine, which may
• appear pink, red or cola colored
• Pain in your back or side that doesn’t go away
• Loss of appetite
• Unexplained weight loss
• Tiredness
• Fever
When to see a doctor
Make an appointment with your doctor if you have any persistent signs or symptoms that worry you.
Causes
It’s not clear what causes most kidney cancers. Doctors know that kidney cancer be-
Risk factors
Factors that can increase the risk of kidney cancer include:
• Older age. Your risk of kidney cancer increases as you age.
• Smoking. Smokers have a greater risk of kidney cancer than nonsmokers do. The risk decreases after you quit.
• Obesity. People who are obese have a higher risk of kidney cancer than people who are considered to have a healthy weight.
• High blood pressure (hypertension). High blood pressure increases your risk of kidney cancer.
• Treatment for kidney failure. People who receive long-term dialysis to treat chronic kidney failure have a greater risk of developing kidney cancer.
• Certain inherited syndromes. People who are born with certain inherited syndromes may have an increased risk of kidney cancer, such as those who have von Hippel-Lindau disease, Birt-HoggDube syndrome, tuberous sclerosis complex, hereditary papillary renal cell carcinoma or familial renal cancer.
• Family history of kidney cancer. The risk of kidney cancer is higher if close family members have had the disease.
Taking steps to improve your health may help reduce your risk of kidney cancer.
To reduce your risk, try to:
• Quit smoking. If you smoke, quit. Many options for quitting exist, including support programs, medications and nicotine replacement products. Tell your doctor you want to quit, and discuss your options together.
• Maintain a healthy weight. Work to maintain a healthy weight. If you’re

Eid al-Fitr is the three-day festival that marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. It is an occasion of peace and joy.
People gather at mosques for Eid prayers, visit relatives, indulge in delicious festive meals, and contribute to charity. For a better understanding of what Eid alFitr celebration means for Muslims, it is important to know more about the monthlong dawn-to-sunset fasting of Ramadan.
A popular social tradition for Muslims is Eidiyah, gifts of cash, given to children by their parents and older relatives within a family. It is considered a reward for successfully completing a month of fasting in Ramadan.
Bosnian, and central Asian cuisine. They’re usually stuffed with spiced lamb or beef and their size and shape varies across regions.
This shortbread cookie is primarily eaten in Levantine countries like Syria and Lebanon. There are different variations of stuffing, usually dates, pistachios, or walnuts, and they are often covered in powdered sugar. Kleicha is a very similar cookie enjoyed in Iraq as well as kahk in Egypt and Sudan.
Bolani is one of those dishes enjoyed throughout Ramadan and still eaten on Eid al-Fitr and throughout other special occasions year-round. Found in Afghanistan, it is a thin-crusted bread with a vegetable filling, stuffed with foods like potatoes, lentils, or pumpkin and can be served with yogurt. It’s typically served as a side or appetizer, though it can be eaten as a main dish.

This much-loved Chicken Tikka Masala is as authentic as it can get. Chunks of chicken are infused with an aromatic spice mix and then chargrilled before adding to a luscious creamy tomato-based curry.
My Kabuli rice recipe is meatless making this dish simpler that goes so well with meaty Eid dishes or as a delicious side in buffet dinners. I love pairing it with Pakistani dishes and the flavours gel along so beautifully.
This fancy whole chicken roast is stuffed with boiled eggs, tomatoes, dried plums, mint and coriander. This Mughal inspired dish is the perfect addition to the Eid table.
Kofta means a meatball. And koftay ka salan (meatball curry) is a classic Pakistani curry which is prepared by first making meatballs with mince meat and then putting them to cook in a flavourful curry made with onions and yogurt. Many people get intimidated at the thought of making these meatballs but today my recipe and tips will help you attain perfect koftas. These koftas are soft, juicy and tender yet stay intact and do not break. And the curry base is quite luscious. Many recipes use tomatoes to make their curry but I feel the onion and yogurt sauce is more closer to the authentic koftay ka salan. Also some like to deep fry their meatballs which in my opinion gives a harder exterior to the meatballs.
This is a Somali Eid bread similar to Injera (a white leavened Ethiopian bread made from teff flour, similar to a crêpe) in texture but has different spices added to it. On Eid, it’s typically served sweet with sprinkled sugar and topped with yogurt for a tangy contrast. This recipe is also very popular in Djibouti and may have originated there.
Seekh Kabab is a popular BBQ item in South Asia. It is made with mince meat formed into long kababs on metal or wooden skewers and then grilled over open charcoal. The meat is seasoned with basic spices like salt, chili and cumin and fresh mint, coriander and green chilies are used for extra flavouring. Seekh Kababs are so versatile. They can be used in so many meals. Put these delicious kababs into parathas/wraps or make my Seekh Kabab Masala curry with these kababs. You can also serve them with my Roghni Naan alongside your favourite chutney. These juicy, melt-in-the-mouth Seekh Kabab (Ground Meat Skewers) are seasoned with Pakistani herbs and spices, baked in the oven and then smoked with coal for a traditional bbq aroma. They are an absolute treat to devour. Easy and quick to make and yet so hearty!
Beef Kofta Curry is a Pakistani meatball curry made with tender, melt-in-the-mouth meatballs called koftas that are cooked in a savoury onion and yogurt sauce. My foolproof recipe will ensure that the meatballs are tender and do not break in the curry.
This recipe of Kabuli Rice tastes very similar to the ones I have had in Afghani restaurants here but this is just my own recreation and I am not claiming it to be authentic in any way. Kabuli Rice is an exotic pulao that is infused with aromatic spices and layered with sweetened carrots, raisins and silvered almonds. It is traditionally made with lamb but this easy recipe is made without meat and works wonderfully as a side dish.
13.Kashmiri Pink Chai is a Pakistani
Kashmiri Chai originates from the valley of Kashmir which has this exclusive variety of tea leaves. Also known as noon (salt) chai or gulabi (pink) chai, this tea unlike the others is very fragrant and creamy. Traditionally it was prepared with salt only but over the years people have started adding sugar giving it a richer taste.
Kashmiri Pink Chai is a Pakistani hot beverage which is pink in colour. It has a rich, creamy and sweet taste. A kehwa (tea base) is first prepared with Kashmiri or Green Tea leaves and whole spices like star anise, cinnamon, cloves and green cardamon. And then the kehwa is boiled with milk and sugar to make the tea.
Literally translated as “milk with dates,” sheer khurma is also known as semai in Bangladesh. This sweet vermicelli dessert is an Eid favourite in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. It’s prepared with vermicelli, milk, sugar, dates and, depending on the country, pistachios, almonds, and/or raisins.
Roghni Naan is made in a tandoor (clay oven). It has a soft, pillowy texture with a golden top that is enriched with melted butter as soon as it is out of the oven. It is a very rich bread which is why it is eaten on special occasions and enjoyed with some classic dishes like Nihari, Haleem or BBQ items. Also check out my more Indian-style Garlic Naan. Naan is one of those recipes which sounds intimidating but actually is not. In Pakistan, naans are available in every nook and cranny so I never bothered to make them back home. But here in Germany, I miss having these fluffy flatbreads. So, to get that same experience I set out to try a couple of recipes and then tweaked them all to create my perfect version. These Roghni Naan baked in the oven are as close to the authentic naan as it can get.
Originating from the Indian subcontinent Masala Chai is an aromatic black tea which is mixed with milk and brewed together with some whole spices and ginger for a rich, warm and spicy flavour.
15. Rose And Pistachio Firni
These dumplings are a traditional Russian Eid al-Fitr food, though they can be found all over the world. They are thought to originate in what we now know as China and are part of Afghan, Armenian, Turkish,
They are deep-fried, crispy fish fingers sold in the streets of Lahore but now widely available all over Pakistan. Strips of fish are coated in a batter made of gram flour and some authentic South Asian spices and then deep-fried in hot oil till crunchy. These fried fish fingers are how you get them on the streets of Pakistan. Light and crispy from the outside, flavourful and spicy from the inside this Lahori Fried Fish makes an incredibly delicious appetizer.
9.Authentic Chicken Tikka Masala
A traditional soft and fluffy Pakistani-Style flatbread - Roghni Naan is essentially made with all-purpose flour, yeast, yogurt, milk and egg. It is also brushed with milk, topped with sesame seeds and then baked in the oven till golden and fluffy.
Also called Afghani Pulao or Qabeli Palaw, this aromatic pilaf is the national dish of Afghanistan. Delicately spiced rice are layered with juicy lamb or beef and finished off with carrots, raisins and nuts.
Firni (or Phirni) is a sweet South Asian rice pudding made with thickened milk, ground rice and nuts. This recipe is my spin on this Punjabi dessert. The addition of rosewater and pistachios makes this dessert very luxurious and aromatic. Traditionally, Firni is served in thootis (clay pots). I am presenting them in stem glasses to make it look more elegant.
A creamy rice pudding aka Firni flavoured with aromatic rose water and crushed pistachios. This dessert is gorgeously fragrant, super elegant and very delicious.

Monday the Liberals are going ahead with the name change with confidence that New Democrat Premier David Eby will not call an early election this year.
“David Eby, the premier, has sworn up and down he will not be calling an election sooner than the fixed election date and he will not be breaking the fixed election date law as his predecessor did,” she said in an interview.
“We’re going to be taking him at his word,” said Elliott. “We’re going to hope he keeps that promise but at the same time we’re going to be ready.”
at a ceremony in Surrey.
VICTORIA — The British Columbia Liberal Party will officially become known as BC United on Wednesday, a move the party says gives voters 18 months to become familiar with the new name before the 2024 fixed election date.
Party vice-president Caroline Elliott said
Former NDP premier John Horgan called a snap election in 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, winning a majority and reducing the Liberals to 28 seats in the 87-seat legislature.
Liberal Leader Kevin Falcon, who was elected to the post in February 2021, will introduce the party’s new name, logo and brand
The party announced in November that 80 per cent of Liberal members voted to proceed with the name change to BC United. Falcon said reconsidering the party’s name was a priority during his leadership campaign where he promised full-scale renewal. Debate about changing the party’s name has been around for decades as some members worry about a perceived — but inaccurate — connection to the federal Liberal party, Elliott said. “Many of our members are, true, federal Liberals,” she said. “Some of them are federal Conservatives. Some of them, most of them probably, are no federal affiliation whatsoever.” The BC United name change reflects the political, geographical, social and cultural diversity within today’s party, Elliott said. “There’s our diversity across the urban-rural divide,” she said. “There are all kinds of ways that people describe not just
our party, but politics generally. What we wanted to represent in our brand is we’re coming together.”
The BC United name will represent the party’s common purpose of improving people’s lives, said Elliott.
“That’s the focus of the name and you’ll see that as our theme Wednesday,” she said of the details being released amid fanfare at a hotel ballroom. The B.C. Liberals have traditionally been a centre-right coalition, rising to Opposition in the early 1990s and forming government for 16 years starting in 2001. Elliott said the name change has party members anticipating new strength and renewal for the party. “I think it is a big moment in our history,” she said. “Really, it’s because we’ve all sort of agreed that what’s important to us is coming together for the purpose we share, and that’s building a bright future for B.C.”

When 17-year-old Ethan Bespflug was fatally stabbed on King George Boulevard last week, first responders took him nine kilometres away to New Westminster even though Surrey Memorial Hospital was less than four blocks away.
In fact, any person with a penetrating injury to the torso and attended to by paramedics in the Fraser Health Authority is taken to Royal Columbian Hospital as it’s the only Level 1 trauma centre approved for treatment of the most serious injuries.
That came as a surprise to Bespflug’s mother, who was satisfied with the care her teen had at RCH last week, and wants to see top-tier medical treatment available at Surrey Memorial Hospital. “With all the acts of violence, that hospital in a large city it needs to have that,” said Holly Indridson. “It’s overrun, they’re short-staffed constantly, like severely.” Fraser Health is British Columbia’s largest health authority, serving 1.9 million people with a dozen hospitals from Burnaby to Hope. Royal Columbian is the only one
with Level 1 trauma teams and resources, and while Abbotsford is Level 2; SMH can only provide Level 4 trauma care.
DOCTORS SPEAK UP
Physicians at Surrey Memorial are deeply frustrated, because while Bespflug is a recent and jarring example given how close he was to them, they’ve often seen patients sent to RCH across large distances through considerable congestion – sometimes even going directly past them on King George.

Alhamdulillah, Guildford Islamic Cultural Center (GICC) had a very successful fundraising event with community iftar and dinner on April 8, 2023. Before the event on the same day, over 500 free iftars were delivered
to the homes of the community members who registered to receive free iftar delivery on the event day. The event featured GICC Masjid project updates from Br. Wasim Malik (Chairperson) and Br. Ammar Zaidi (Secretary).
The event also featured guest speaker Sh. Ah-
mad Shehab. He motivated the congregants and held a very successful fundraising with over $200K raised in one night for the GICC masjid project.
The event also featured auctioning of beautiful paintings of Masjid Al-Aqsa and Haram Al-Sharif created by a local Syrian artist.
Alhamdulillah the event was a tremendous success. May Allah (swt) reward all the brothers and sisters who participated and donated generously.
Report by: Ammar ZaidiVANCOUVER — The mother of a teenager stabbed to death on a transit bus in Surrey, B.C., says she hopes her son’s death will bring change. Holly Indridson said while she believes there needs to be more police and security on buses, the public also needs to be more aware of what to do.
“If you see these types of acts happening, don’t film them … call the police,” she said in an interview Tuesday.
She said teachers and other members of the public who see children with violent tendencies should refer them for help.
“There’s no reason people do these types of things,” she said of her son’s murder. Indridson said her 17-year-old son, Ethan Bespflug, didn’t know the man who attacked him, but was acquainted with the woman
who was with his alleged attacker. Her plea comes as premiers from across the country are slated to meet with the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police Friday to discuss the recent spate of violence across Canada. On Canadian transit specifically, violent attacks have happened over the last several weeks in Metro Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Regina and Toronto.
Bespflug was stabbed last week not far from the King George SkyTrain station in Surrey, B.C. Twenty-year-old Kaiden Mintenko of the neighbouring suburb of Burnaby has been charged with second-degree murder in the death. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said in a news conference Monday that investigators were still working to determine the exact nature of the relation-
ship between the two males, but the attack wasn’t random.
They said Bespflug and Mintenko were known to each other “through a third party” and that investigators were working to determine a motive.
A spokesperson for the homicide investigations team said Tuesday he couldn’t comment on evidence collected or future investigative steps since the case is before the courts and under a publication ban. Indridson said it feels good knowing someone is in custody after her son’s death. “It’s a bittersweet thing,” she said. “It doesn’t bring him back but at least there’s some justice that will happen.”
Indridson said she has received support from the community since Bespflug was
killed. “’It’s the only thing really getting me through this time. It’s just with the support and keeping his memory alive, and showing who he was,” she said...

Vaisakhi is one of the most important dates in the Sikh calendar.
Vaisakhi is a spring festival which happens on the 13 or 14 April every year. It is a day to celebrate 1699 - the year when Sikhism was born as a collective faith.
In 2023 Vaisakhi takes place on Friday 14 April, but why is is so important and where did it come from?
Vaisakhi has been a harvest festival in Punjab - an area of northern India - for a long time, even before it became so important to Sikhs. In 1699, Guru Gobind Singh chose the festival as the moment to establish the
Khalsa - that’s the collective name given to Sikhs who’ve been baptised.
The story goes that at the festival, he came out of a tent carrying a sword and said that any Sikh prepared to give his life for his faith should come into the tent.
Five men disappeared into the tent, and the Guru came out - alone - with blood on his sword. This worried the crowds.
That is until the five men then came out from the tent unharmed and wearing turbans.
They became known as Panj Piare or the ‘Beloved Five’ - and they were to be the first members of the Khalsa.
They were baptised by the Guru who sprinkled them with Amrit, which is the Sikh
word for holy water. He also said prayers. This ritual became the basis of the Sikh baptism ceremony.
To celebrate Vaisakhi, Sikhs will visit places of worship called Gudwaras. These will also be especially decorated for the occasion.
Many people enjoy parades and special processions through the streets called nagar kirtans. ‘Nagar’ means town and ‘kirtan’ means the singing of hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib, which is the Sikh holy book. Many Sikhs also choose Vaisakhi as the day to be baptised in to the Khalsa brotherhood. Normally big celebrations take place in the city of Anandpur Sahib in Punjab, which is where Guru Gobind Singh established the
Khalsa.
Farmers in the Punjab will also use Vaisakhi as an opportunity to give thanks for a plentiful harvest and pray for a good one in the year to come. Source: bbc.co.uk

People around the globe are experiencing more intense heatwaves, deadly floods and wildfires as a result of climate change.Unless global emissions are cut, this cycle will continue.
1. Hotter, longer heatwaves
To understand the impact of small changes to average temperatures, think of them as a bell curve with extreme cold and hot at either end, and the bulk of temperatures in the middle.A small shift in the centre means more of the curve touches the extremesand so heatwaves become more frequent and extreme.
“A small shift makes a big difference”. A line chart showing how small changes in the climate increases the probability of more hot weather and more extreme weather.Temperatures in the UK topped 40C for the first time on record, in July last year, leading to transport disruption and water shortage. The Met Office estimates the extreme heat is ten times more likely now because of climate change. And things could worsen.
“In a few decades this might actually be a quite a cool summer,” says Professor Friederike Otto, a climate scientist at Imperial College London.Heatwaves can be made longer and more intense by another weather phenomenon - a heat dome.In an area of high pressure, hot air is pushed down and trapped in place, causing temperatures to
soar over an entire continent.
When a storm distorts the jet stream, which is made of currents of fast-flowing air, it is a bit like yanking a skipping rope at one end and seeing the ripples move along it.The Arctic is also warming more than four times faster than the global average in recent decades. In June 2020, average temperatures in Siberia were up to 10°C above normal, reaching a new record of 38°C in the Arctic circle. This triggered devastating wildfires and sea ice loss. The World Weather Attribution network (WWA), a collaboration between international climate scientist, concluded this was “almost impossible” without climate change.Scientists warn 2023 could be even warmer, as a climate phenomenon called La Niña - which has been suppressing global temperatures - has come to an end.
2. More persistent droughts
Making a direct link between climate change and individual drought events is challenging. A number of factors influence water availability, not just temperature and precipitation. But as heatwaves become more intense and longer, droughts are likely to worsen.Less rain falls between heatwaves, so ground moisture and water supplies run dry more quickly. This means the ground takes less time to heat up, warming the air above and leading to more intense heat. Demand for water from humans and farming puts
even more stress on water supply, adding to shortages.
3. More fuel for wildfires
Wildfires can be sparked by direct human involvement - but natural factors can also play a huge part. The cycle of extreme and longlasting heat caused by climate change draws more and more moisture out of the ground and vegetation. These tinder-dry conditions provide fuel for fires, which can spread at an incredible speed. Earlier this year the Chilean government put three regions on high alert for forest fires amid weeks of high temperatures.
Last summer, France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Croatia and Albania experienced severe wildfires - with thousands of residents evacuated and several hundreds reported to have died.In 2021, Canada experienced heatwaves that led to fires which developed so rapidly and explosively that they created their own weather system, forming pyrocumulonimbus clouds. These colossal clouds then produced lightning, igniting more fires.
4. More extreme rainfall events
In the usual weather cycle, hot weather creates moisture and water vapour in the air, which turns into droplets to create rain. The warmer it becomes, however, the more vapour there is in the atmosphere. This results in more droplets and heavier rainfall, sometimes in a shorter space of time and over a
smaller area. In 2022 floods hit Spain and also parts of eastern Australia. In a period of just six days Brisbane saw almost 80% of its annual rainfall, while Sydney recorded more than its average annual rainfall in little over three months. These rainfall events are connected to the effects of climate change elsewhere, according to Peter Gleick, a water specialist from the US National Academy of Sciences.. The weather across the globe will always be highly variable - but climate change is making those variations more extreme.
And the challenge now is not only limiting the further impact people have on the atmosphere but also adapting to and tackling the extremes we are already in,

LAHORE: By defying the decision of the Supreme Court, the rulers are setting a bad example, says Imran Khan, adding first Yousuf Raza Gilani was disqualified for contempt of court and now Shehbaz Sharif will follow suit. Imran Khan was talking to party Central President Chaudhry Parvez Elahi, who called on him on Tuesday at Zaman Park.
In the meeting, a detailed consultation on tickets for elections in Punjab and the political situation of the country were discussed. Imran Khan also specifically inquired about the well-being of Moonis Elahi.
Parvez Elahi said there had been a detailed
consultation on the candidates in Punjab and Imran himself would announce the tickets. He said every unconstitutional tactic was being used to stop the election. The incompetent rulers would have to answer for their every unconstitutional action.
Shehbaz Sharif wants to cling to power in any case, even if he has to violate the constitution, the “unconstitutional Show-baz” Sharif has been badly exposed to the nation. In a meeting with party leaders later, Elahi said the Election Commission of Pakistan, State Bank and the Parliament are playing a game. According to the order of the Supreme Court, the election commission will
have to be given the allocated money in any case. Shehbaz Sharif has been guilty of contempt of court, now the decision is awaited. Everyone has to follow the constitution and law for the stability and protection of democracy.

New Zealand finally won a match in the fivematch series against Pakistan and managed to keep the series alive. Just when they needed a win in order to have a chance at winning the series — since Pakistan has won two matches so far — their team came through and succeeded with a close four-run win in the third T20i at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore last night.
But one Pakistani made sure the Kiwis had a hard time earning that win. Iftikhar Ahmed’s fiery batting won the hearts of Twitter, despite the national side losing the match.
New Zealand kept picking wickets at regular intervals, reducing Pakistan to 88-7 only for
Iftikhar to smash 60 off 24 balls, forging a 61-run partnership with Faheem Ashraf and forcing a grandstand finish.
Faheem fell after hitting two sixes and as many fours in the penultimate over but Pakistan was still well-placed with Iftikhar at the crease. Unfortunately, Iftikhar, who slammed six sixes and three fours, was caught on the fourth ball of the final over and Pakistan was dismissed for 159.
Despite the loss, cricket fans are celebrating Iftikhar’s performance. In other words, ‘Iftimania’ has taken over.
