Donald Trump pleads not guilty in federal documents case

Canada is experiencing its ‘worst wildfire season of the 21st century’: Blair

MIAMI - Former U.S. president Donald Trump pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to federal criminal charges that he unlawfully kept national-security documents when he left office and lied to officials who sought to recover them. Trump’s plea, entered before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jonathan Goodman in a federal court in Miami, sets up a legal battle likely to play out over coming months as he campaigns to win back the presiden-

cy in a November 2024 election. Experts say it could be a year or more before a trial takes place.Trump was allowed to leave court without conditions or travel restrictions and no cash bond was required. Goodman ruled that Trump was not allowed to communicate with potential witnesses in the case. rump’s former aide Walt Nauta, who is also charged in the case, appeared in court alongside Trump but will not have to enter a plea until June 27 because he does not have a local lawyer. He, too, was released without having to post bond and was ordered not to talk to other witnesses...Supporters chanted “We love Trump” as his motorcade departed the courthouse at 3:55 p.m. EDT (1955 GMT), roughly two hours after it arrived... Household debt level rises as interest rates bite into cash flow

Canada is experiencing its worst wildfire season of the 21st century.

OTTAWA - Canadians have less cash to spend even as they are taking on more debt, Statistics Canada reported Wednesday, at a time when interest rates are the highest they’ve been in decades. On a seasonally adjusted

basis, household credit market debt as a proportion of household disposable income rose to 184.5 per cent in the first quarter, up from 181.7 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2022, the agency said Wednesday. The figure translates to $1.85 in credit market debt for every dollar of household disposable income. ”Looking ahead, debt servicing costs are expected to continue to rise rapidly over the course of this year and peak in the second half of 2024, as interest rates are now expected to rise and remain elevated for longer,” said TD economist Maria Solovieva in a note.

Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair announced the grim milestone Monday, saying more than 47,000 square kilometres have burned so far this year, with 431 wildfires currently burning across Canada. One of those continues to threaten the Alberta community of Edson, where 8,400 residents remain under an evacuation order issued Friday. Hundreds of people in B.C. have either been forced from their homes or are under an evacuation alert as the 4,660-square-kilometre Donnie Creek blaze continues to rage, having grown to be the second largest ever recorded wildfire in the province. A massive fire in Shelburne County, N.S., remains out of control, although officials say the 235-square-

kilometre Barrington Lake wildfire is no longer growing.

Teams with the province’s Department of Natural Resources will be flying over the fire in southwest Nova Scotia this week and will use infrared scanners to detect areas where firefighters should be dispatched. About 5,000 firefighting personnel from multiple countries have been deployed across Canada to help battle the flames, and hundreds more are expected to arrive from Chile, Costa Rica, Spain and Portugal in the coming days. Budget, May 9 top agenda in PM-COAS meeting

ISLAMABAD: For the first time after presentation of the federal budget 202324, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir on Monday met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the PM House. Interestingly, soon after the meeting, the National Assembly passed a resolution seeking the trial of May 9 rioters — who were involved in attacks on military and state installations — “without any delay” and under the Pakistan Army Act, 1952. Although there was no official word about the meeting but sources close to the prime minister told Dawn that the COAS called on the PM.

The COAS has also said recently that there will be no mercy for the planners, instigators, abettors and perpetrators involved in the May 9 mayhem and that they will be tried under

the army and official secrets acts. Shehbaz promises all-out support to Sindh govt for cyclone response

The PM-COAS meeting is also believed to be significant in the backdrop of the presentation of the recent fiscal budget.

Prime Minister Shehbaz also said in his tweets that despite the constraints imposed by domestic and global circumstances, the budget 2023-24 promised to turn things around and has outlined a clear path for the purpose. The prime minister said the Cont. @ page 5

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (p.b.u.h) said, “Whoever performs Hajj for Allah’s pleasure and does not have sexual relations with his wife, and does not do evil or sins then he will return (after Hajj free from all sins) as if he were born anew.” Volume 2, Book 26, Number 596:

HAJJ Guide to know everyone Is Blaspheme Punishable by Death in Islam?

There is nothing in the Quran or the authentic teachings of Prophet Muhammad justifying the killing of people for opposing, criticizing, humiliating or showing irreverence toward holy personages, religious artifacts, customs and beliefs of Islam.

Muslims from across the globe dream of and plan for Hajj, a spiritual pilgrimage to Makkah. Preparation is key. This Hajj guide helps you get ready for the incredible journey. Hajj is a religious obligation, but more than a mere duty. The unforgettable journey takes five days to complete, not counting travel time or a day of spiritual preparation. With journeys to the Holy Kaaba, pilgrims perform a ritual that dates to pre-Islamic days and was sanctified by The Prophet Mohamed (PBUH). They walk where he walked, see what he saw, and do what he did. At the end of their sojourns, pilgrims are often spent, but feel renewed and closer to God. According to The Prophet (PBUH), those who perform Hajj will return without sins, like the day they were born. For first-time pilgrims, the journey can be intimidating.

Read on for an overview of the stages of Hajj and learn what to expect each day.

DAY 1

Thus begins Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice.

• Travel to Al Haram to perform Tawaf and Sa’ay again.

DAY 4

(3rd day of Hajj – 10th Dhu’l-Hijjah)

• Return to Mina and spend the night.

• Travel to Arafat 20km away.

• Stand and pray (wuquf) in Arafat Plain or Jabal Al Rahma (Mount Arafat). Do not leave the boundary or the Hajj will be invalid.

• At sunset, travel to Muzdalifah to collect pebbles for the next day.

• Spend the night under the stars.

DAY 5

• Prepare to enter Ihram, a spiritual state of purity and devotion. This includes washing your body and changing into Ihram clothing, preferably at a miqat station outside the holy city.

• Recite the Talbiyah in the miqat station to declare intention to make the pilgrimage.

• Perform the Welcome Tawaf – enter Al Haram (Holy Mosque) and circle the Holy Kaaba seven times in a counterclockwise direction.

• Perform Sa’ay – walk 7 times between the hills of Safa and Marwah beside the Kaaba. Originally observed outdoors, the rite is now performed in an air-conditioned tunnel.

DAY 2

(1st day of Hajj – 8th Dhu’l-Hijjah)

• Travel to Mina 5km away, by walking or by bus, after morning prayer in Makkah.

• Spend the day in prayer.

• Spend the night in air-conditioned tents.

DAY 3

(2nd day of Hajj – 9th Dhu’l-Hijjah)

• Return to Mina.

• Perform Stoning of the Devil (Ramy Al Jamarat) ritual by throwing pebbles at one of three pillars (now walls).

• Offer animal sacrifice, commonly done by buying a voucher in Makkah.

(4th day of Hajj – 11th Dhu’l-Hijjah) :

• Repeat Ramy Al Jamarat, this time throwing pebbles at all three pillars (walls).

• Spend the night in Mina.

DAY 6

(5th day of Hajj – 12th Dhu’l-Hijjah) :

• Repeat Ramy Al Jamarat.

• Return to Al Haram for the farewell Tawaf.

• Spend the night in Makkah or Mina.

DAY 7

(conditional day – 13th Dhu’l-Hijjah)

If pilgrims are unable to leave Mina on 12th Dhu’l-Hijjah, they must repeat Ramy Al Jamarat before returning to Makkah, where they perform the farewell Tawaf and drink Zamzam water.

“Revile not ye those whom they call upon besides Allah, lest they out of spite revile Allah in their ignorance. Thus We have made alluring to each people its own doings. In the end will they return to their Lord, and We shall then tell them the truth of all that they did. [6:108]

“O ye who believe! Let not some men among you ridicule others: It may be that the (latter) are better than the (former): Nor let some women ridicule others: It may be that the (latter are better than the (former): Nor defame nor be sarcastic to each other, nor call each other by (offensive) nicknames: Ill-seeming is a name connoting wickedness, (to be used of one) after he has believed: And those who do not desist are (indeed) doing wrong. [49:11]

“Those who avoid the greater crimes and shameful deeds, and, when they are angry even then forgive;” [42:37]

If blasphemy was punishable by death in Islam, then the Prophet would have been the first one to order the killing of hundreds of his foes who later became his closest companions. With the exception of a very few earlier Arabs who accepted the Prophet as the Messenger of Allah , the majority of people of Makkah opposed him, humiliated him, cursed or blasphemed him or even tried to kill him, yet he preferred to practice forgiveness and to seek the divine mercy for them. The old woman who used to throw garbage on the Prophet was visited by him when he did not see her throwing it anymore to learn that she was not well. When Suhail bin Amr, a poet who composed poetry blaspheming the Prophet was taken as a prisoner of war after the battle of Badr, the Prophet asked his companions to show kindness to him. There are examples after examples to prove that the Prophet never resorted to violence against those who were showing utter disrespect to him.

The assassination of a Pakistani Christian cabinet minister for speaking against the blasphemy law is a stab in the heart of Islam and a humiliation of the Prophet by those who claim to be his followers. Those who

are supporting his killing or similar actions are the worst enemy of Islam who neither understands Islam nor respects the Prophet . No matter who they are, they must be challenged on the basis of the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet .

Unfortunately, their argument is built on a position that is supported by a good number of Muslim religious scholars all over the world that demand death for acts of apostasy and blasphemy, two of the practices that were developed under the influence of corrupt despotic Muslim rulers who misused their power to twist religious scholarship to serve their political interests.

The idea of blasphemy is foreign to Islam. It was justified by many medieval Muslim scholars on the basis of their understanding of Christian and Jewish texts supporting laws against those who blaspheme and vilify their religions.

The word “blasphemy” came via Middle English blasfemen and Old French blasfemer and Later Latin blasphemare meaning “I injure.” Based on this definition, rulers used laws to victimize non-members of and dissident members of the ruling sect or cult. Countries that had a state religion used it often to serve the interests of the rulers. In Judaism, the third book of Torah, Leviticus 24:16 states that those who speak blasphemy shall surely be put to death. The seven laws of Noah seen by Judaism as applicable to all of humankind prohibits blasphemy In Christian theology, the Gospel of Mark 3:29, describes blaspheming the holy spirit as unforgivable eternal sin. Thomas Aquinas considered blasphemy a major unforgivable sin, more grave than murder. The Book of Concord describes it the greatest sin ever committed. The Baptist Confession of Faith calls it a disgusting and detesting act. Catholic Church has specific prayers and devotions as Acts of Reparation for blasphemy against God and the Church was a crime punishable

The Spiraling Crisis: Examining World Inflation Amidst the Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Introduction:

The escalating crisis between Russia and Ukraine has not only wreaked havoc on the geopolitical landscape but has also significantly impacted the global economy. As tensions continue to rise, the world is witnessing a concerning surge in inflation, with both direct and indirect consequences that threaten the stability and well-being of nations around the globe. This editorial aims to shed light on the causes and implications of world inflation stemming from the RussiaUkraine crisis, emphasizing the urgent need for international cooperation and prudent economic policies to mitigate its adverse effects.

Unraveling the Causes:

Geopolitical Uncertainty:

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has created an atmosphere of geopolitical uncertainty, leading to diminished investor confidence and increased risk perception. As a result, capital outflows from affected regions have intensified, disrupting global financial markets and amplifying inflationary pressures.

Energy Vulnerability: Russia is a significant exporter

My letter is in reference to the BCMA Jamia Masjid on 72nd Avenue Surrey.

measures for the uplifting of information technology, agriculture, solarisation, youth development and other sectors were proposed after thorough deliberations.“They are aimed at incentivising innovation and entrepreneurship of our talented youth

of natural gas to Europe, and Ukraine serves as a key transit country for these supplies. The ongoing tensions have jeopardized energy security, raising concerns about disruptions in gas flows. The resulting scarcity and price volatility have contributed to rising energy costs, driving up inflation in both local and international markets.

Trade Disruptions: The Russia-Ukraine conflict has disrupted global trade flows, causing supply chain disruptions and hampering the movement of goods and services. Increased trade barriers, sanctions, and market uncertainties have led to higher import costs, further exacerbating inflationary pressures worldwide.

Implications of World Inflation:

Soaring Consumer Prices: Rising inflation erodes the purchasing power of consumers, making basic necessities and essential commodities more expensive. This burden disproportionately affects vulnerable populations, exacerbating social inequalities and hindering economic progress.

Stifled Investment and Growth: Inflationary pressures can discourage busi-

nesses from making longterm investment decisions, hampering economic growth. Uncertainty surrounding prices and market stability can dampen entrepreneurial spirit and hinder job creation, ultimately stalling economic recovery efforts.

Policy Dilemmas: Central banks face the delicate task of addressing inflationary pressures while striving to maintain economic stability. Adjusting interest rates and implementing fiscal policies becomes increasingly challenging as governments try to strike a balance between curbing inflation and stimulating growth.

Addressing the Crisis:

Diplomatic Resolution:

A peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine crisis should be the primary objective. International diplomatic efforts must be intensified to deescalate tensions, restore stability, and promote dialogue between the parties involved. This would help restore investor confidence and alleviate market uncertainties.

Energy Diversification:

To mitigate vulnerability to energy disruptions, countries should prioritize diversifying their energy sources and investing in renewable energy

infrastructure. Reduced dependence on a single supplier would enhance energy security and reduce the impact of potential price shocks.

International Cooperation: Collaborative efforts among nations are vital to combating global inflation. Cooperation through forums such as the G7, G20, and International Monetary Fund (IMF) can facilitate coordinated policy responses, promote economic stability, and provide financial support to affected regions.

Conclusion:

The Russia-Ukraine crisis has sent shockwaves through the global economy, resulting in a surge of inflation with farreaching consequences. It is imperative for nations to recognize the urgent need for collaborative action, diplomatic resolutions, and prudent economic policies to mitigate the adverse effects of world inflation. By prioritizing stability, diversification, and international cooperation, we can begin to alleviate the pressures caused by this crisis and pave the way for a more resilient and prosperous future.

Household debt level rises as interest rates bite into cash flow

News Coninued from Page 1

“This will create additional headwinds for households with a high sensitivity to interest rates (such as variable rate mortgage holders) and could result in higher delinquency rates in the future,” she said. The household debt service ratio, measured as total obligated payments of principal and interest on credit market debt as a proportion of household disposable income, was

14.9 per cent in the first quarter of 2023, up from 14.4 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2022.

That ratio is set to hit record levels, potentially in the second quarter, as the lagging impact of higher interest rates continues to filter through to household borrowing costs, said Royal Bank of Canada assistant chief economist Nathan Janzen in a note. “The combination of higher inflation and debt payments already soaked up all of the growth

in household after-tax incomes last year, and looks likely to do so again in 2023,” Janzen said. The increase came as households borrowed $16.5 billion on a seasonally adjusted basis in the first quarter including $11.2 billion in mortgage debt. Canadians’ combined outstanding debt hit a new record in the first quarter of the year, reaching $2.32 trillion, TransUnion reported two weeks ago. Average balances on most consumer credit

products rose by 11.4 per cent, while average mortgage balances were up 7.1 per cent. The total seasonally adjusted stock of household credit market debt, which includes consumer credit and both mortgage and non-mortgage loans, rose 0.6 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2022 to $2.84 trillion in the first quarter of 2023, including $2.11 trillion in mortgage debt, Statistics Canada said. Russia says relations ‘on the verge of being severed’ as Ottawa seizes cargo plane

OTTAWA - Moscow is warning that relations with Canada are “on the verge of being severed” after the federal Liberal government moved to forfeit a massive Russian cargo plane. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited Ukraine on the weekend, where he announced that Canada officially seized an airplane that had been sitting on the tarmac at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport since February 2022. “We perceive this act as cynical and shameless theft,” Russia’s foreign ministry said in an English-language statement posted Tuesday. A year ago, Canada became the first G7 country to enact a law that allows Ottawa to not just seize assets held by sanctioned people, but to forfeit the money and have it diverted to victims of a sanctioned regime. The law remains unused, but Trudeau said Ottawa plans to begin a process to either transfer the plane to Ukraine or sell it for money that would support the country’s recovery.

“We’re going to do it as quickly as possible, but I can tell you the Ukrainians are very pleased that the path has started,” Trudeau said Saturday during an unannounced visit to Kyiv. The Russian-registered Antonov

AN-124 is owned by the firm Volga-Dneper, which Canada sanctioned in April. It is one of the largest aircraft in the world, and Ottawa fears Russia could use it to deliver military supplies in its invasion of Ukraine. The government officially seized the aircraft through a June 8 cabinet order. “I think there was pressure on the government to do something about it, because effectively it couldn’t be moved, because Russian aircraft are prohibited from Canadian airspace,” said William Pellerin, an Ottawa-based trade lawyer with the firm McMillan LLP. He said the owners can launch a court challenge of the seizure up until the time Ottawa files a formal court application to forfeit the asset... Source: ctvnews.ca

Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino announced Wednesday he’ll be issuing a “ministerial directive” requiring Canada’s corrections agency to reform how it handles high profile prison transfers, after it was revealed that the minister’s office knew about plans to transfer notorious serial rapist and convicted killer Paul Bernardo, months before it happened. Facing calls from the Official Opposition to resign, Mendicino dug in Wednesday, defending himself in the House of Commons and putting out a statement indicating changes are ahead, including requiring the Correctional Service of Canada

“The Correctional Service of Canada has a process in place to provide advanced notice to the Minister’s office on high-profile offenders,” said CSC senior communications adviser Kevin Antonucci in a statement. While noting that decisions around specific cases and operations such as offender transfers and victim notifications fall under CSC’s purview, not the minister nor their office, Antonucci said that the first email sent notified Mendicino’s office of the transfer, as well as “communications messaging” but the final date of Bernardo’s move had yet to be determined. Fiji needs a realistic budget. That’s the word from University of the South Pacific (USP) lecturer in economics Dr Janesh Sami while highlighting that the Fiji Government paid about $204 million in interest payment in 2023. “Now, that’s large,” he told participants at the 2023 Pacific Update yesterday.

Dr Sami also pointed out that Government spent about $125m on social welfare and the health sector needed an additional $150m. He said it was better to adopt moderate measures in the upcoming budget, rather than massive changes later on.

The History of Father’s Day

Father’s Day is quickly approaching, and many of us are looking for that gift that will let our fathers know how much we appreciate them. While Father’s Day is a holiday with which almost everyone is familiar, few people know the interesting history behind this annual holiday. Learning more about the history of Father’s Day can help you more fully enjoy this celebration and understand why it’s such a

cherished holiday.

Origins of Father’s Day

As with many holidays we celebrate today, Father’s Day began as a primarily religious observance.

A traditional Catholic holiday celebrating fatherhood, Father’s Day has been recognized in some way dating back to the Middle Ages. Traditionally, Father’s Day took place on March 19, which is the date the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of St. Joseph.

Abstract

General anaesthesia accompanied by surgical stress may influence the inflammatory responses that are essential for maintaining the homeostatic state during the postoperative course. Severe dysregulation of the inflammatory process may provoke or aggravate postoperative complications, e.g. increased susceptibility to infections, inadequate stress reactions and hypercatabolism. Anaesthetics have been suspected of impairing various functions of the immune system either directly, by disturbing the functions of immune-competent cells, or indirectly by modulating the stress response. In the past, conflicting data on the possible immunological side effects of anaesthetics have been published. Potential reasons

for these controversial findings include heterogeneous patient study groups with diverse pre-existing diseases, lack of standardisation of surgical procedures, major differences in the length and severity of surgical tissue injury and a small number of randomised studies. Although the immunological effects are of minor consequence in subjects with normal immune functions, the suppression of cellular and humoral immunity following surgery and general anaesthesia may be relevant in patients with pre-existing immune disorders.

In England, last blasphemy execution was that of an 18-year-old Thomas Aikenhead who was executed for the crime in 1697. He was prosecuted for denying the accuracy of the Old Testament and the legitimacy of Christ’s miracles.

The Quran and the authentic teachings of the Prophet describe the practice of showing irreverence to God and his messenger as acts of ignorance, deliberate provocation or hatred. Yet the two sources of Islamic guidance never proposed punitive action on the basis of theological dissent or religious differences or irreverence. Some Muslim jurists have, often misused the institution of ijtihad to serve the emotive interests of the people. The fatwa or religious decree issued by Khomeini proposing murder of Salman Rushdie was a personal opinion with no support from the divine guidance.

The Islamic Republic of Pakistan also has in its penal code laws that prohibit and punish blasphemy against Islam ranging from a fine to death. The Criminal courts often decide a case of blasphemy on the basis of public emotions and political interests rather than the divine writ. Pakistan’s Criminal Code has its blasphemy laws. For instance, code 295 forbids damaging or defiling a place of

While the modern version of Father’s Day began in the US in the early part of the twentieth century, it was soon adopted in Canada, and Canadians have celebrated Father’s Day ever since. While not as widely celebrated as Mother’s Day, and less commercially promoted, Father’s Day has a special significance for Canadians nonetheless, and shows no signs of waning.

Father’s Day Is Established

In reality, Father’s Day would not have reached the status that it has today without the efforts of one woman, Sonora Smart Dodd. One of the reasons that Dodd was so passionate about the holiday was that she and her siblings were raised by a single father, William Jackson Smart. Dodd was inspired to start a holiday for fathers after hearing a sermon at her church about Anna Jarvis’s effort to establish Mother’s Day. After the sermon, Dodd approached her pastor

The increasing knowledge of recent years is strongly related to the development in basic sciences and to the improvement in laboratory techniques, e.g. in cell separation and cell culture methods. It has been demonstrated that anaesthetics at General anaesthesia and inflammation—invivo studies

and said she believed fathers deserved their own day of celebration. Her original idea was that the holiday be held on June 5, her father’s birthday. Instead, to provide more time to prepare sermons for the holiday, Dodd proposed that the Father’s Day event be held on June 19, 1910, the third Sunday of the month. Dodd continued holding these celebrations in Spokane, Washington, for many years until she left to study art in Chicago. She resumed celebrations when she returned to Spokane in the 1930s.

Based on Dodd’s efforts, several politicians attempted to formalize the holiday with little success. U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson designated the celebration of Father’s Day with a presidential proclamation, and Father’s Day was made a national holiday in 1972 by President Richard M. Nixon.

Father’s Day in Canada Is

Although it took some time

for Father’s Day to be recognized as an official holiday, it is now a cherished celebration for millions of people around the world. Now that you know the history of Father’s Day, we invite you to plan a celebration that will honor the fathers in your lives with the enthusiasm intended by the holiday’s first champions.

Most Canadian dads can look forward this Sunday to a host of gestures and gifts from their children, including the perennial favourites such as pancakes for breakfast, socks, ties, and aftershave, just to name a few. But keep in mind that, according to a March 2018 survey in Canada by retailmenot.ca, “The majority of dads (79 per cent) agree that fathers don’t expect a gift for Father’s Day, as much as mothers do for Mother’s Day.” So perhaps all dad wants is to spend time with his kids and feel loved and appreciated, and the best thing you could do for him is to show him that love.

Surgical interventions and general anaesthesia initiate inflammatory responses that are essential for maintaining homeostatic regula-

when Muslims had lost connection with the Quran and by and large were at the mercy of despotic rulers and their hired religious scholars.

The un-Quanic and un-Prophetic practices adopted by many Muslims scholars must be challenged. Islam is not the monopoly of self-imposed scholars. It is a faith given to people for their well being and guidance without any interference from any authority other than Allah , the almighty.. Those who assume the divine role in condemning people and deciding their life and death must be challenged and what better way than to seek the repelling of blasphemy law in light of the Quran and Sunna.

worship or a sacred object, code 296A forbids outraging religious feelings, code 295 B forbids defiling the Quran, code 295 C forbids defaming Prophet Muhammad . Defiling the Quran is punishable by imprisonment for life and defaming Prophet Muhammad by death with or without a fine. None of these codes have any basis in the Quran or the authentic teachings of the Prophet . It is a position that many scholars adopted under the influence of despotism that prevailed in the Muslim world for centuries and still prevails in many countries. This position is rarely challenged by those who claim to have knowledge of the Quran

and Sunna. Often, they use their religious authority to suppress debate on the issue. The tyranny of religious scholars is so intense that those opposed to these laws are condemned as non-Muslims punishable by death. Some of the scholars even encourage their followers to unleash terror against such people. Their arrogance has reached to a point that they do not want to listen to any argument based on the Quran and the teachings of the Quran. The religious and educational institutions of the Muslim world suffer from the tyranny of these scholars who justify their ignorance and arrogance on the basis of a literature that emerged at a time,

If Muslim religious scholars are seriously concerned about the sensitivities of people with regards to their faith and its holy figures, then they should advocate common laws for every religion and religious community emphasizing that respect must be shown to all religions and freedom of speech must not be seen as a license to hurt and provoke others.

It is time that Muslim scholars from all over the world revisit issues such as blasphemy and apostasy in the light of the Quran and Sunna rather than falling victim to positions that can not be substantiated by the divine writ.

Blaspheme Punishable by Death in Islam?

BANGKOK - Recent fierce fighting between Myanmar’s army and local militant groups has killed at least 26 civilians, including six children, in area east of the capital, according to reports Wednesday by a resident, a rights group and a medical assistance group. The fighting took place in Shan State’s Pekon township, a hotly contested area in the armed struggle that arose after

February 2021 when the army seized power from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. The takeover prompted widespread public protests, whose violent suppression by the security forces triggered an armed resistance that now spans much of the country. The recent fighting has focused on Mobye, a conglomeration of villages covering about 175 square kilometers (about 70 square miles) located about 100 kilometers (60 miles) east of the capital, Naypyitaw. The area is between the capital and an area dominated by the Karenni ethnic minority group, which also has been fighting against the military-installed government. Newly formed militia units opposed to military rule are part of a loosely organized People’s Defense Force, or PDF, which has allied with well-established armed ethnic minority groups ... Palestinian rights advocates call for US sanctions on Israeli unit involved in the killing of 80-yearold Omar Assad. The United States will address the death of elderly American citizen Omar Assad, who was killed by Israeli forces last year, “directly” with Israel after the country’s military announced that it will not pursue criminal charges

in the case. Early in 2021, Assad, who was 80 years old, suffered a stress-induced heart attack after he was arbitrarily detained, bound, blindfolded and gagged by Israeli forces, and then left out unresponsive on the ground at a cold construction site in the occupied West Bank.

The Israeli army said on Tuesday that it found no “causal link” between the way its soldiers treated Assad and the American citizen’s death.

The US Department of State, which often reiterates that the safety of Americans abroad is its top priority, said on Wednesday that it was looking into the Israeli findings. “We’re aware of the conclusion of the investigation, and we’re at this time seeking more information from the Israeli government about it,” State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller told reporters.

ATHENS, GREECE - A fishing boat carrying migrants trying to reach Europe capsized and sank Wednesday off the coast of Greece, authorities said, leaving at least 79 dead and many more missing in one of the worst disasters of its kind this year. Coast guard, navy and merchant vessels and aircraft fanned out for a vast search-andrescue operation set to continue overnight. It was unclear how many passengers were missing, but some initial reports suggested hundreds of people may have been aboard when the boat went down far from shore. Coast guard spokesman Nikos Alexiou told state ERT TV that it was impossible to accurately estimate the number of passengers. He said it appeared that the 25- to 30-metre (80to 100-foot) vessel capsized after people abruptly moved to one side. “The outer deck was full of people, and we presume that the interior (of the vessel) would also have been full,” he said. “It looks as if there was a shift among the people who

ABUJA, NIGERIA - A boat returning from a wedding capsized in northern Nigeria, killing at least 103 people, including children, officials said Tuesday. Residents and police were still searching for dozens of people who were on the overcrowded boat that capsized early Monday on the Niger River in the Pategi district of Kwara state, which is 160 kilometres (100 miles) from Ilorin, the state capital, according to police spokesman Okasanmi Ajayi. He said 100 people had been rescued so far. Most of those who drowned were relatives from several villages who attended the wedding together and partied late into the night, according to Abdul Gana Lukpada, a local chief. They arrived at the ceremony on motorcycles but had to leave on the locally made boat after a downpour flooded the road, he said. “The boat was overloaded and close to 300 persons were in it. Celebrated the first season of the Bengali calendar year and promotion of Multicultural values of Canada,

To celebrate the first season of the Bengali calendar year and to promote multicultural values of Canada, my wife Rushee and I organized this special event called “ A TOUCH OF BANGLADESH ‘’ that took place in Surrey, BC on June 3, 2023. Through this kind of traditional cultural and social event my core goal is to broaden our horizon and include other communities in order to create harmony and enrich our

multicultural society. Canada is a country of cultural diversity and the only way to maintain this multiculturalism is by social inclusion and integration. Conservative MP from South Surrey-White Rock and the Chief Opposition Whip Honourable kerry-Lynn Findlay, Counselor Linda Anis and Mike Bose of Surrey, several former Conservative candidates from Surrey and Vancouver, members of the Canadian Muslim Media Club, community leaders from Bangladesh, Pakistan,

India, Fiji, Mauritius, China, Korea and Philippines have attended the event. Thanks to our Leader Pierre Poilievre for sending an inspirational message for our event.

Surrey is a place of numerous possibilities and we can achieve great things together. I take pride in being a resident of Guildford, Surrey for the past 25 years and I believe that Surrey Downtown will become the business and commercial hub of the future. We must have a long term vision and a solid plan to

guide our city in the right direction and that is why Surrey Central riding is undoubtedly the most vital seat in the greater Surrey area. As a former Member of Parliament of Bangladesh and based on my experience as a former Candidate from Surrey/Newton I am ready to represent Surrey Central in Ottawa under the leadership of our visionary leader Pierre Poilievre, he is working hard to bring communities together to make this land of opportunity and freedom for everyone.

Pakistan gets first shipment of Russian crude under discount deal

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif calls the arrival of the Russian crude a ‘transformative day’ for the crisis-ridden country.

Islamabad, Pakistan – Pakistan has received its first shipment of Russian crude oil under an agreement signed between the two countries in April, but experts believe it will be too soon to say if the deal will provide significant benefit to domestic consumers.

Cyclone Biparjoy: All you need to know about evacuations in Karachi’s DHA

DHA spokesperson says only “voluntary evacuations underway”; Seaview residents complain authorities forcing them to vacate homes. As Cyclone Biparjoy edges closer to Sindh’s coastline, authorities have stepped up evacuations in vulnerable areas across the province including Keti Bundar, Thatta, Badin, Sujawal and Karachi.

According to the latest alert issued by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the cyclone is now at a distance of 340km south-southwest of Karachi, 355km south-southwest of Thatta and 275km south-southwest of Keti Bandar.

The PMD alert added that the “very severe cyclon-

ic storm” was now likely to recurve north-northeastward and cross between Keti Bandar and the Indian Gujarat coast on June 15, packing winds of 100-120km/h.

According to Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, over 60,000 people have been evacuated to safer locations across the province, excluding Karachi. In the port city, areas falling under the jurisdiction of Defence Housing Authority (DHA) have been marked as some of the hotspots that could be affected by the storm. However, residents seem to be confused regarding evacuations. If you live in the DHA, here is all you need to know about evacuations.

DHA spokesperson Farrukh Rizvi told Dawn.com that the following areas had been highlighted as vulnerable to the cyclone.

• Seaview Apartments

• Darakhshan Villas

• Chota Bukhari

Canadian MPs joined overseas Pakistanis in Ottawa, Canada & showed solidarity

wd da ppl of Pak. They raised their voice against the human rights violations & reiterated that people must be allowed to decide who will govern them.

This afternoon on Parliament Hill I was pleased to speak at a rally in support of free and fair elections in Pakistan as well as human rights in that country. Democracy and the rule of law are fundamental principles of any free society.
