Burning Man revellers begin exodus after flooding left tens of thousands stranded in Nevada desert

Muddy roads that left tens of thousands of partygoers stranded for days at a counterculture festival had dried up enough by Monday afternoon to allow them to begin their exodus from the northern Nevada desert. Burning Man organizers said they began to let traffic flow out of the main road around 2 p.m. local time -- even as they continued to ask revelers to delay their exit to Tuesday to ease traffic. As of Monday afternoon, they said about 64,000 people

International students struggle to find affordable housing, some facing homelessness

China on Monday indicated that leader Xi Jinping would skip an important gathering of the world’s 20 top economies for the first time with Premier Li Qiang traveling to the event in New Delhi this weekend in his place. Xi’s absence from the G20 summit comes as tensions simmer between China and host country India, especially over their disputed border and New Delhi’s growing ties with the United States. The no-show of China’s top leader – unprecedented since the first such summit was held in 2008 –will likely be seen as a snub to India, which is hosting the powerful group of world leaders for the first time amid efforts to boost its global clout under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Questions about Xi’s attendance at the meeting were first raised

last week when Reuters reported the Chinese leader was likely to miss it, citing two unnamed Indian diplomats. At a regular news conference Monday, China’s Foreign Ministry said Li, China’s second-ranking leader, would attend the summit on Saturday and Sunday, without mentioning Xi. Mao Ning, a spokesperson for the ministry, sidestepped a question from a reporter about the reason for Xi’s non-attendance.

“The Group of 20 is a major forum for international economic cooperation, and China has always attached great importance to and actively participated in relevant activities,” Mao said, without addressing the substance of the question.

Israel opens new embassy in Bahrain, agrees to boost trade relations

From high rents to scams to excessive paperwork, students and advocates say the B.C. housing market has gotten worse over the last few years. Many students find themselves so desperate to find a place to live, they accept unsafe and unhygienic conditions, including Amy Choi, an interna-

tional student at The University of British Columbia. “Last year, I had a huge leakage on my ceiling and my landlord did not tell me anything about malfunctions of the house. I had to deal with it during finals week, but I was really desperate for housing so I had to just sign up for it,” she recalled. Despite being a returning student, she still hasn’t secured a place to live long-term.

“Everyone’s competing and they’re even collecting reference letters for it-- for housing-- which I don’t really think is necessary and everything is also just incredibly expensive,” said Choi.commute for hours.

The following article is based on a video presentation by Dr. Carl Sharif El-Tobgui on Blogging Theology with Paul Williams (July 17, 2022) and has been slightly modified and annotated for readability in collaboration with the presenter. The link to the original presentation is referenced below

Introduction

This year on May 17, Canada’s International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, a poster, promoted under the auspices of a Canadian university, depicted two Muslim women in headscarves on the verge of kissing.

A number of other Canadian universities and high schools allowed the poster to circulate as a way of promoting “diversity in love.” The poster also featured a biracial homosexual couple, a black heterosexual couple, and a couple consisting of a fully-abled and a disabled person, alongside the two Muslim women, with each couple engaging in a romantic act. Many Canadian Muslims were enraged after the release of this poster, and rightfully so considering the appropriation of a patent Muslim symbol (i.e., the hijab) for a cause that is explicitly prohibited in Islam. The Muslim community organized collectively and submitted a petition signed by thousands of individuals, from young students in high school to leaders of Muslim organizations, demanding that the university take down the poster. One Muslim wrote to the university, “Shame on you for such an insulting mockery post to my religion.”

Soon after, LGBTQ Nation published an article titled “University pulls image of women in hijabs kissing after Muslim community protests.”

The university initially pushed back against the petition, conceding that the topic was “complex and intersectional” but insisting that the poster would remain.

The LGBTQ Nation article ended with the following statement: “Muslim culture isn’t inherently anti-gay: the Qur’an says nothing about homosexuality (unlike the Bible); Islamic history is filled with texts openly depicting homosexuality as a beautiful, matter-of-fact thing; and more American Muslims support same-sex marriage than do Christian Evangelicals, Protestants, and Mormons, according to a Pew Research Study.”

The framing of the article as a whole, from its title to its final paragraph, portrays Muslims who objected to the poster as unnecessarily “homophobic”: they were protesting a beautiful thing that their own religious scripture supposedly does not condemn and that their own history has allegedly celebrated for centuries.

In the end, however, the university acquiesced to the demands of the Muslim community and pulled the poster down. There

is an uplifting lesson here. The Muslim community—starting with the young students who had the intelligence and awareness to decipher the subversion of Islamic teachings and the courage to raise their voices against it and the Muslim organizations who came to their aid—is to be congratulated. Even against the aggressive agenda of the cultural, political, and capitalist elites, the Muslim community scored a small but significant victory for their faith and in favor of truth and reason. As elaborated below, Islam’s prohibition of homosexual acts is categorical, and its teachings on gender relations and sexual norms are foundational and inseparable from belief in Allah and His revelation. There is no room in Islam for the new direction in which the liberal culture appears to be dragging the West and, through its coercive ideological apparatus, the world as a whole. It is a culture that denies the natural and divinely ordained norms of union between men and women, erasing sexual differences in favor of a utopian, ideological, anti-religious, and anti-scientific androgyny. One would have to reject Islamic guidance root and branch in order to incorporate this radical gender egalitarianism. This agenda requires, and has already mobilized, rigorous social engineering domestically, as well as neocolonial wars and anti-religious propaganda in the Muslim world in particular and the Global South generally. Muslims must, therefore, establish and advocate for the Islamic paradigm of gender and sexuality over and against modern and postmodern perversions, while also supporting those Muslims who acknowledge orthodox Islamic teachings, but who struggle with same-sex attractions and/or gender dysphoria, in their struggle to live lives of virtue in conformity with the will of Allah and the teachings of Islam.

We cannot explore the Islamic paradigm of sexual morality without first understanding where morality itself comes from. A theocentric worldview, such as that of Islam, takes God as the ultimate source of morality. Our very purpose for existence is to uphold God’s command to the best of our ability: “I have not created jinn and humankind but to worship Me.”

We maintain that God and His Messenger alone are the legislators of what is right and wrong, permitted and prohibited. Allah states in the Qur’an, “It is not for a believer, man or woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decreed a matter that they should have any option in their affair. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has indeed strayed into a plain error.”

Islamic morality is not arbitrary; although the divine command is at the heart of our rich tradition, Muslims have long engaged in rational reflection on the wisdom of divine creation and the divine word for centuries, producing a comprehensive

The “diversity in love” poster, discussed above, reminds us that over the last couple of decades, the perspectives and claims of the LGBT movement have become not merely tolerated but championed. They are now pervasive, ubiquitous, and irresistible. Within one generation, LGBT ideas and behaviors have gone from being taboo to mainstream. The questions we need to ask are:

• How did we get here and why should we care?

• How can we build a conceptual framework on gender, sex, and morality based on Islamic sources?

Given the prodigious changing of the cultural winds, it is no longer sufficient for Muslims—and others who disapprove of same-sex relationships—simply to say that they do not approve of homosexual behavior in the same way that they do not approve of drinking or premarital sex between men and women. The discourse on homosexuality has shifted so quickly and radically that the old Muslim defenses and attitudes (“It is not our problem,” “How is this different for us Muslims from fornication or wine-drinking?,” or “Live and let live”) have become ineffective and we are confronted with grave challenges. Most well-meaning and sincere Muslims are either complacent, helpless, or both. They fail to realize that unlike the haram acts of drinking alcohol and illicit (heterosexual) sex, the affirmation of samesex relationships and transgenderism is presented as a positive moral cause, undergirded by contentious metaphysical assumptions regarding, among other things, the human self, the place of sex and sexuality in human identity, and the proper balance between the individual and society. It is a discourse that appeals to universal notions of human dignity, justice, respect, and autonomy. Only by engaging with these issues holistically can we properly understand and respond to this challenge.

Throughout the past century, so much has changed deep within our conscious understanding that we must expend considerable effort to understand that we, as Muslims in the contemporary West, are dealing with two very different conceptual paradigms. Consider the common occurrence of a young Western Muslim saying to an Islamic religious authority, “I think I’m gay. What does Islam have to say about that?” The shaykh may simply respond, “It’s haram (prohibited)!”

The youth in this scenario, however, is asking about an individual and political identity situated within a paradigm without truth or metaphysics—a paradigm that views sexual feeling as being as close to unassailable truth as one can get. To our young, college-going American Muslim, who generally champions liberal causes in the name of justice and love, to say that “being gay” is haram might be like saying that being Arab or South Asian is haram. There is miscommunication between the two because each is operating from a different paradigm. On the one hand, we have the Islamic worldview as it pertains to morality—and to gender and sexuality in particular—and, on the other hand, we have the modern/post-modern secular worldview. The two start from diametrically opposed assumptions.

This article sets out to distinguish these worldviews before exploring more specifically the Islamic paradigm on gender, sex, and sexual morality. It then discusses homosexuality and transgenderism from two angles: from the Islamic moral and legal (sharʿī) considerations, followed by a discussion of how to support Muslims who struggle with same-sex attractions. By doing so, we hope to illustrate the urgency of challenging the contemporary discourse around sex, gender, and sexuality and equipping ourselves with the proper conceptual framework to better help Muslims struggling with this issue. We conclude with additional resources on the subject that may be of help in providing further direction.

Darul Qur’an’s annual camp 2023 was an unforgettable experience filled with cherished memories that we will carry with us for a lifetime. This year, we went for 5 days and had 25 participants! From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere was charged with excitement and anticipation, and we knew we were in for an amazing time. The days were packed with a variety of activities that brought us all together and strengthened our bonds with each other and with our faith. The mornings began with Fajr Salah & uplifting devotional sessions, setting a positive tone for the day ahead. We’d gather in a beautiful outdoor setting, surrounded

Throughout the day, we participated in team-building games and sports that tested our skills and brought out our competitive spirit. Whether we were conquering darts, playing volleyball, or engaging in friendly baseball games, we were always cheering each other on, fostering a supportive and encouraging environment.

One of the highlights of the camp was the evening campfires. Gathered around the crackling flames, we shared stories, talked about the life of our beloved Prophet (SAW), and roasted marshmallows to make s’mores. The warmth of the fire mirrored the warmth of the friendships we were building, and we couldn’t help but feel a profound sense of belonging.

One of the most impactful aspects of camp was the spiritual growth we experienced. Engaging in deep discussions about our

Labour Day, the first Monday in September, has been an official holiday in Canada since 1894. The origin of Labour Day came 20 years before that, when unions started holding parades and rallies in Toronto and Ottawa to celebrate the 1872 Toronto printers’ strike – the original “fight for fairness” that won major changes including the decriminalization of unions in Canada. Striking for a 9-hour workday

The Toronto Typographical Union (TTU) demanded a 9-hour workday from the city’s publishers instead of the 12-hour, 6-day week. When employers refused, the printers walked out on March 25, 1872. On April 15, 1872, 10,000 supporters showed up for a rally at Queen’s Park when the population of Toronto was only 50,000!

Globe publisher George Brown launched immediate legal action that resulted in the arrest of the strike committee for criminal con-

faith, attending inspiring talks and sermons, and taking time for personal reflection during quiet moments, allowed us to draw closer to our beliefs and connect with Allāh on a profound level. The camp also offered opportunities for us to show our faith to others in the camp and community. It was fulfilling to see how our collective efforts could make a difference and positively impact the lives of others. Even during downtime, we were never short of laughter and camaraderie. Late-night chats in the tents and stargazing were some of the moments that fostered strong friendships and allowed us to appreciate the simple joys of life. As the days passed, we became a tight-knit family. We shared dreams, fears, and aspirations, knowing that we had a support system in one another. Friendships forged in the Darul Qur’an camp are unique because they are built on shared values and experiences, making them enduring and meaningful.

“What I live and breathe for is helping people to develop at any level on and off the field,” stated Marius Roevde, Executive Director of Richmond FC. “By actively engaging in community impact programs, we are building a positive brand and making a difference as community builders. It is my fervent wish to see more businesses actively engage in such initiatives.”

The event was made possible with the generous support of the City of Richmond and sponsorship from Coho Commissary. At the end of the event, Voices of Muslim announced its support for girls who wish to continue their soccer journey with Richmond FC by offering $2000 in total in scholarships with the club. By:

As the camp came to a close, there was a mix of happiness and sadness. We were grateful for the incredible time we had, but bidding farewell to newfound friends was difficult. We exchanged contact information, promising to stay in touch and reunite at future Darul Qur’an events. Looking back, we realize that camp wasn’t just about fun activities; it was an experience that enriched our lives spiritually, emotionally, and socially. The memories we created during those days will always hold a special place in our hearts, and we are forever thankful for the bonds we formed and the fun we had in camp. We ask the Almighty to make these camps possible again and again in the coming years. Without the help of our volunteers, this camp would not have been possible. We thank our sponsors, the community, Brother Tahir Sattar and our partner Islamic Relief Canada for their continued support throughout year.

May Allah accept their sacrifices, contributions, their time, efforts and Duās! May Allāh bless them in this world and the hereafter! .Āmīn! Reported by:

spiracy. Union activity was still illegal under Canadian law. The people-powered domino effect

The Toronto parade inspired leaders in Ottawa to stage a similar event. A few months later, on September 3, 1872, 7 unions in Ottawa organized a parade more than a mile long, headed by an artillery band and flanked by city firefighters. The parade passed the home of Sir John A. MacDonald, then prime minister of Canada. He promised to sweep away “such barbarous laws” as those invoked to imprison the TTU workers in Toronto.

Historic legislation

While the strike did not win the 9-hour day, just months ahead of

a federal election, under mounting pressure from unions, MacDonald led the passage of the the Trade Union Act, which legalized and protected union activity in Canada.

The parades continued in support of the Nine Hour Movement and became annual events in such cities as Toronto and Ottawa.

American labour leader inspired by Canadian union parades

In 1882, an American labour leader, Peter McGuire, founder of the carpenters’ union and the American Federation of Labor, was invited to speak at a parade in Toronto.

When he returned to the U.S., he organized a similar parade in New York City on September 5, 1882.

The popularity of the event spread

rapidly. The first labour day events were held in Toronto (1882); Hamilton and Oshawa (1883); Montreal (1886); St Catharines (1887); Halifax (1888); Ottawa and Vancouver (1890); and London (1892).

Becoming an official holiday

U.S. President Grover Cleveland declared the first Monday of September as an official federal “labor” day holiday in 1894. Canada soon followed. Cleveland wanted to avoid May 1, which had been proclaimed the International Workers’ Day in Europe by unions and socialist parties, becoming the workers’ day also in the USA. May Day also commemorates the Haymarket riot in Chicago (1886).

Canada shut its land border to asylum seekers. More refugees came anyway

ings along the border dwindled to a trickle. But five months later, the overall number of people filing refugee claims in Canada has risen instead of falling. Many now come by air, while others sneak across the border and hide until they can apply for asylum without fear of being sent back, people working with migrants told Reuters. The numbers show how hard it is for countries to shut the door on desperate people and the challenge unexpected numbers of asylum seekers can pose:

TORONTO, Sept 2 (Reuters) - A deal Canada struck this year to stem the flow of asylum seekers entering from the U.S. was, at first glance, a quick success: Within days, the number of people caught at unofficial cross-

In Toronto, hundreds slept on the streets this summer as they struggled to find beds.

“The basic reality is that closing a border doesn’t do anything to solve the need for protection,” said Shauna Labman, an associate professor and acting director of the Human Rights Program at the University of Winni-

peg. “It only increases the desperation.” Canada prides itself on welcoming immigrants and aims to bring in a record half a million new permanent residents in 2025 to deal with an acute labor shortage. But it has sought to discourage those applying for asylum, chiefly through an agreement with the U.S. under which each country turns back asylum seekers.

Still, last year alone, more than 39,000 asylum seekers entered Canada via unofficial crossings - mostly into Quebec via a dirt path off Roxham Road in New York, prompting the province to complain it could not handle the arrivals. Asylum seekers are drawn by Canada’s reputation for swifter processing and greater acceptance of asylum applications compared to the U.S. In response,

Canada and the United States in March amended their two-decade-old asylum-seeker pact, the Safe Third Country Agreement. The agreement now applies to the length of the countries’ 4,000-mile land border, rather than just at ports of entry.

The expanded pact led to a dramatic drop in the number of people intercepted at informal crossings - down to double digits in April through July from 4,173 in March.

But overall, the number of asylum seekers entering Canada has surged. The total number of refugee claims made in Canada rose in July to 12,010 - the highest monthly total since at least January 2017 - and up from 10,120 in March, according to data from the immigration, refugees and citizenship department...Source: reuters.com/world

brief history

Volunteerism in Islam and its practice at Home

Voluntary work means service to the people, its practice, and Islam

There have always been such people in the world, those who have dedicated their lives to others, in fact, they are the ones who hold the ascendancy of humanity. The best and best person is the one who benefits others and does not hurt anyone.

Fills the hearts of the poor, the poor, and the common people with joy, and tries to make their life moments free from sorrow and sorrow, for a few moments. However, by providing them with happiness and joy, ease their pain and sorrow. If they need help, help them, and if you can’t do anything, at least talk sweetly with them and remove their thoughts. ‘Volunteer’ literally means one who works for the pleasure of God. Serving suffering humanity can only be the work of a great person, this angelic person can be called by the name of ‘volunteer’. Serving, assisting, and helping God’s creation in lawful matters is called service of the people. The importance and necessity of helping people and helping people in need has been recognized everywhere, and every religion calls for it, Our religion, Islam, has put a lot of emphasis on serving people - so Islam is the world. It is the only religion that consists of complete goodness and mercy, good behavior

and benevolence, and service to God’s creation is its way of distinction. It has been said, Rahma-ul-ul-Alamin. The wonderful thing is that Islam did not order to limit the scope of service to the people only to Muslims, but also called human compassion and kindness to nonMuslims. While he declared Muslims as brothers of each other, he also declared all creatures as family of Allah. It has provided the broadest basis of mutual sympathy, mutual cooperation, and brotherhood for the building of humanity, whether it is about the rights of neighbors or the problem of treating the sick, whether it is about helping the poor or about the rights of travelers, Islam has He called for equal treatment of all without discrimination of color, caste, religion, and nationality. By serving the creation of God, a person not only becomes respected in the hearts of his people but also gets great honor and respect from Allah Ta’ala - such a person becomes entitled to the pleasure and closeness of Allah, the One and Only. Service is the requirement of divine love, the spirit of faith, and the source of red cotton for this world and the hereafter. Financial support is not only service but also sponsoring someone, teaching someone, giving useful advice, teaching someone

a skill, and intellectual patronage. Doing, establishing an educational institution, sharing in someone’s suffering and other similar matters are different ways of service. Although other religions also preach and promote service to the people, Islam goes a step ahead by imposing it in the form of Zakat. Worship leads to heaven, while service leads to Allah. Hazrat Abu Huraira narrates that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said that Allah Almighty will say on the Day of Resurrection: O son of Adam! I was sick, you did not visit me. The man will say.

O my Lord! How could I visit You when You are the Lord of the whole world? Allah Ta’ala will say. Didn’t you know that my so-and-so servant was sick, so you didn’t visit him? Did you not know that if you had visited him, you would have found me with him? O son of Adam! I asked you for food, but you did not give me food. On this Ibn Adam will say. O my Lord! How can I feed you when you are the Lord of the worlds? Allah Ta’ala will say. You do not remember that my so-and-so servant asked you for food, so you did not feed him. Did you not know that If you feed him, you will get his reward before me? There are several styles of service: One way is for people to dedi-

cate their wealth to the needy. The second way is that there is no wealth, but don’t dedicate your time and life. In Islam, service to others is given great importance: But in North America, it has been seen that those children who are in other places or where they have to do voluntary work, do not resist doing anything and doing it with great interest, but when they are asked to do similar work at home, they do not like it. It is incomprehensible why they hesitate and show no interest in cleaning the house when they do it themselves outside, and why they do not show interest in it even when they do it themselves. They don’t even like to clean their rooms and refuse to clean their own washrooms, so it’s surprising that in Europe and North America, where children are taught all the time, the idea of cleaning the park is on the street. Keep, of course, there are also various associations and NGOs together with them. If they are working, why is it that they forget to do all the charity work as soon as they come home? They even go astray with their parents. These children clean everywhere in the restaurant whether they are kids/ youth, or even married. Why not they think?

Cohen arrived in Bahrain on Sunday, accompanied by a business delegation of more than 30 companies working in hightech, logistics and real estate. Earlier on Monday, he met Crown

Organizers also asked attendees not to walk out of the Black Rock Desert about 110 miles (177 kilometers) north of Reno as others had done throughout the weekend, including celebrity DJ Diplo and comedian Chris Rock. They didn’t specify why. The festival had been closed to vehicles after more than a half-inch (1.3 centimeters) of rain fell on Friday.

The road closures came just before “the Man” was to be set ablaze Saturday night. The event traditionally culminates in the torching of the large wooden effigy shaped like a man and a wooden temple structure during the final two nights, but the fires were postponed to Monday night as authorities worked to reopen exit routes by the end of the Labor Day weekend.

Canada on ‘the razor’s edge’ of a recession, warns economist

News Coninued from Page 1

to show the economic output of the country in a given year. The danger of an economic contraction exists, Macdonald argues, because of a lack of “strong underlying growth.”

However, higher interest rates are also starting to bite, according to Macdonald, with particularly large declines in residential construction -- a key driver of economic growth in Canada over the past decades.

After the Bank of Canada held its

key interest rate at five per cent, an economist says that inflation will be the key factor in determining whether more rate hikes are coming, and warns that a recession is a real possibility. “We’re on the razor’s edge here,” David Macdonald,

a senior economist at the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives told CTV News Channel’s Marcia MacMillan on Wednesday. “The danger is that it doesn’t take a lot to push us into negative territory.”..

UN special rapporteur says he is ‘deeply disturbed’ by migrant workers’ accounts of abuse and exploitation in Canada. Montreal, Canada – Canada’s temporary foreign worker programmes are a “breeding ground” for modern forms of slavery, a United Nations expert has warned, about a year after Jamaican farmworkers in the province of Ontario denounced their mistreatment. The UN’s special rapporteur on contemporary forms of slavery, Tomoya Obokata, said on Wednesday that he was “deeply disturbed by the accounts of exploitation and abuse shared” with him by migrant workers during a two-week factfinding mission to Canada. “Employer-specific work permit regimes, including certain Temporary Foreign Worker Programs (TFWPs), make migrant workers vulnerable to contemporary forms of slavery, as they cannot report abuses without fear of deportation,” Obokata said.

His comments come after a group of Jamai-

can farmworkers sent a letter to the country’s labour minister in August of last year likening their treatment on two Ontario farms to “systematic slavery”. “We are treated like mules and punished for not working fast enough,” they said.

“We are exposed to dangerous pesticides without proper protection, and our bosses are verbally abusive, swearing at us. They physically intimidate us, destroy our personal property, and threaten to send us home.”..Source:aljazeera.com/

and there was nothing they could do,” wrote Susan Benson on Tuesday, Aug. 29.

Air Canada says it is apologizing to customers after passengers’ seats were reportedly soiled with vomit on a flight from Las Vegas to Montreal. A woman who says she was a passenger on the Aug. 26 flight wrote in a social media post that the plane’s crew “placed coffee grinds in the seat pouch and sprayed perfume to mask the smell” of vomit prior to boarding. “When the clearly upset passengers tried to explain to the flight attendant that the seat and seatbelt were wet and there was still visible vomit residue in their area, the flight attendant was very apologetic but explained that the flight was full

The flight from Las Vegas to Montreal clocks in at over four hours. Benson wrote the passengers were given blankets, wipes, and more sick bags. When they got settled in, according to Benson, the pilot approached them and asked them to leave. Then, “the pilot got up and walked to the front of the plane,” alleged Benson. “Next thing we know, security comes down the aisle and escorted the two ladies off the plane!” CTV News reached out to Air Canada to confirm Benson’s story.

In response, the airline said it was “reviewing this serious matter internally and (had) followed up with the customers directly.”

“Our operating procedures were not followed correctly in this instance,” wrote the Air Canada, which added that it has apologized to the customers involved.

“They clearly did not receive the standard of care to which they were entitled,” the airline added. “We remain in contact with them about this matter.”Source:montreal.ctvnews.

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday stripped Islamabad’s district magistrate of his powers to detain suspects

under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO). Justice Babar Sattar gave the ruling during a hearing of petitions filed by Pakistan Tehreek-iInsaf (PTI) leaders Sheharyar Afridi and Shandana Gulzar, both of whom were detained under the MPO on the district magistrate’s orders. The orders were suspended by the IHC. In response to the court’s query regarding the law that empowers detention of a suspect, the Attorney Generl for Pakistan produced a notification dating back to 1965. Justice Sattar observed that the notification cannot justify the detention of citizens and decided to issue a notice to the Attorney General.Source: dawnnews.com

G20: Why India - or Bharat - is arguing about its name

So what changed?

Over the years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP has been changing colonial names, saying it’ll help India move past a mentality of slavery. Supporters of the invitation name-change say British colonial rulers coined the name India while the real name was always Bharat.

With back to school just around the corner and COVID-19 cases on the rise, it’s important to remember the basics of keeping respiratory illnesses at bay, one expert says.

Dr. Dina Kulik, a pediatrician and founder of Kidcrew Medical, told CTV News Channel on Monday that we can mitigate the risk of viruses such as COVID-19 and RSV by maintaining proper hygiene, keeping kids home from school if they’re sick and masking up if you believe you could be infectious.

“I think the more we send our kids to school sick, the more we go back to the workplaces sick, the more likely we are to spread viruses, particularly … indoors without masks, etc,” she said. “We want to make sure that we’re spending lots of time outdoors if we can, we mask if we’re unwell or if we think we might be contagious, wash our hands well.”

According to Health Canada, as of the end

of August, COVID-19 activity is “increasing” in Canada, with the number of hospital beds occupied by COVID-19 patients increasing from 1,836 to 2,125 between Aug. 23 and Aug. 29. Many regions in Canada no longer track or report their COVID-19 numbers regularly, meaning that numbers may be undercounted. Around one in 54 people may be infected currently, according to the most recent estimate from the Canadian COVID-19 Hazard Index, a project aggregating COVID-19 data which is run by a volunteer group of scientists and epidemiologists. COVID-19 was back in the headlines in August when the first case of BA.2.86 – a new, heavily mutated variant –was detected in British Columbia. The variant, also known as Pirola, spiked fears that it could evade vaccine protection due to having more than 30 mutations in its spike protein compared to it closest ancestor, BA.2. Early research suggests that the new variant may not be as dangerous as first believed. Two studies, performed in China and Sweden, have found that BA.2.86 doesn’t look as different to our immune systems as was feared, and that although the new variant poses a threat, it shouldn’t cause the jump in cases that the advent of Omicron did...

STORY: India’s president referred to herself as the President of Bharat instead of the President of India this week, sparking a row over the country’s name. Droupadi Murmu put the title on official dinner invitations for a reception she was hosting for leaders at the G20 summit in New Delhi. India is also called Bharat, or Bharata, or Hindustan. Those are its pre-colonial names in Indian languages, used interchangeably by ordinary Indians and officials. But high offices usually stick to titles such as President or Prime Minister of India while communicating in English.

To Hindu groups linked to BJP, the G20 summit was an opportunity to shed India’s colonial baggage.

Others oppose the name-change. Mamata Banerjee, a top opposition leader, said everyone in India says “Bharat;” it’s nothing new. “So what happened suddenly,” she asked, “that the government had to change the name of the country?”

The answer - she and others say - is that it aimed to eclipse a major opposition alliance formed two months ago to fight next year’s elections. It’s called INDIA, an acronym... Source:news.yahoo.com

What

need to know about SoGI in B.C. schools?

The Muslim Parents should aware what’s going on Schools Education systum...

This information is just for awareness. (Miracle).

SOGI (pronounced so-jee) stands for Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and SOGI-inclusive education exists in all B.C. school district’s including School District. No 57 (SD57). SOGI is not its own curriculum; instead, it is one aspect of diversity that is embedded across a range of grades and subject areas. Back on Dec. 31, 2016, all B.C. school districts and independent schools were required to include specific references to sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) in their anti-bullying policies.

This requirement followed the July 2016 addition of gender identity and expression as a prohibited ground of discrimination under the B.C. Human Rights Code (sexual orientation was already protected).

“All of B.C.’s schools need to be welcoming and safe places free of bullying. We owe it to

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Muslim parents who object to their children being taught about gender identity issues in schools are being fed “misinformation and disinformation” by “the American right-wing” and the “far right.” “I’ve heard this concern many, many times and I know that it is a very real issue,” Trudeau tells a concerned Muslim parent in Calgary, in an eight-minute exchange recorded on video and posted online.Trudeau says these right-wing forces are “using those fears to drive a wedge between a government that will always stand up for all your rights, just like I will always stand up for the rights of LGBT kids, including if they’re LGBT Muslim kids,” as opposed to “the Islamophobia pushed by the previous Conservative government in a whole bunch of different ways” such as “a political campaign against the niqab” and a “snitch line against Muslims.”

to LGB t

our children to make sure they know that there are no reasons they should be bullied – and including sexual orientation and gender identity in antibullying policies makes that crystal clear,” said Mike Bernier, who was the education minister, at the time.

Policies and procedures that explicitly reference SOGI have been proven to reduce, discrimination, suicidal ideation and suicide attempts for all students.

A 2021 Egale national survey found that harassment on the basis of perceived sexual orientation or gender identity is experienced by both students who identify as 2SLGBTQ+ and students who do not.

This is because homophobia and transphobia can be directed at anyone and invariably have a negative effect on school culture, emotional well-being and academic success.

Like other forms of inclusion in schools, the goal of SOGI-inclusive education is for everyone to understand the diverse society that we live in and to feel safe, valued, and respected. All students need to see themselves and their families reflected in lessons, language and practices.

The Ministry of Education is responsible for the creation of BC curriculum, and resources like SOGI 1 2 3 provides ready-to-use, grade level SOGI-inclusive lesson plans that align with the curriculum.

Teachers can then customize SOGI 1 2 3 lesson plans to meet the needs of their classrooms. This might look like talking about famous 2SLGBTQ+ people in a history lesson or reading novels that include 2SLGBTQ+ characters in an English class. There are 10 key components for effective SOGI-Inclusive policies and procedures:

Common language

All parties will be well-informed of and equipped with appropriate and respectful language.

Safety/anti-harrasment

Proactive and reactive measures that include sexual orientation and gender identity will impact all students.

Self identification

Students will have the right to self-identification, which includes the name by which they wish to be addressed and the pronouns that correspond to their gender identity.

Confidentiality

Students will have the right to the confidentiality of their sex, gender, and name.

parents angry with trudeau over LGBtQ Curriculum Concerns

The parents added that they were “offended by Trudeau’s remarks”, saying he is either “lying or he is misinformed”.

“It’s shocking that Trudeau would use the same kind of silly arguments that are being used in the United States,” Kareem Monib, a parent from Montgomery County, Maryland, told Fox News Digital.

“I’m surprised that they don’t have anything else to say other than to accuse parents who are truly concerned and want to pass on their religious teachings to their kids — to say that that’s right-wing manipulation.”..

“This accusation of right-wing manipulation is actually a way for them to avoid looking at their own role and responsibility in creating this situation,” he added. The frustration among Muslim parents in Canada reached a boiling point after audio surfaced of an Edmonton Public Schools teacher berating Muslim students for skipping school in order to avoid Pride events. Binnish Mustafa, a Montgom-

ery Country parent to a seven-year-old special needs child, said Trudeau “really needs to go to the public school classroom and sit there and see the discussions that follow certain classroom books that are being discussed.”

Muslim Frustration

“I take much offense to what he said,” Mustafa said. “This is something that really affected us here in Montgomery County. When we spoke, we were categorized as the right wing. We were categorized as bigots.” In Islam, Christianity, and all divine religions, same-sex relationship and marriage are totally prohibited. Regarding the position of Islam, Allah says in the Qur’an, “O humanity! Indeed, We created you from a male and a female, and made you into peoples and tribes so that you may get to know one another. Surely the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous among you. Allah is truly All-Knowing, All-Aware.” (Qur’an 49:13)Source:aboutislam.net/muslim

Muslims opposed to LGBtQ curricula for their kids aren’t bigots

It boils down to moral values rooted firmly in one’s faith, not in a political ideology — left or right. We are witnessing a unique and welcome phenomenon: Muslims in the West are at the forefront of a social movement that transcends any one faith or ethnicity. For those following the news, protests led by parents have erupted across the United States and Canada against school boards that wish to teach schoolchildren content about the acceptability of LGBTQ lifestyles. While parents of all ethnicities and religions are involved, Muslim parents have been playing a central role in all of these cases, both as organisers and protesters, and their highly visible presence is creating waves on social media.

It is understandable for parents to be concerned. In Maryland, for example, a school district has approved books that discuss homosexuality and transgenderism as normal realities for children as young as three years old. This is state-sponsored ideological indoctrination of toddlers who can barely form complete sentences, much less think critically. Parents have a God-given duty and legal right to provide moral in,struction and guidance to their children. This includes the right of parents and their children to reject ideologies that contravene their beliefs. Yet, supposedly secular institutions like public schools are now dictating that students must accept and affirm LGBTQ ideology, at times

with the threat that if they refuse to do so, they “do not belong” in their country, as one teacher in Edmonton, Canada, recently said to a Muslim student. As Muslims, we refuse to be coerced into believing something our faith categorically condemns. This is not a political stance. It is a moral principle... Muslims across North America should firmly root their moral values in their faith, not in a specific political ideology. To understand why this distinction is so critical, we ought to heed a lesson from our recent past. In the immediate aftermath of 9/11, Islam in North America faced an existential crisis. Muslims were widely portrayed as the enemy. Scholars were deported. Bearded Muslim men and hijabi women were harassed, randomly questioned and detained at airports. Many worshippers avoided praying in masjids and some Muslims even changed their first names. The reality of Muslims in North America in the first decade of this century was one of fear, anxiety and extreme alienation.

The open hostility of the North American political right towards Islam and Muslims sharply contrasted with the comparatively sympathetic left. As a matter of pragmatic political (and in some cases, literal) survival, Muslims flocked to the liberal political parties of Canada and the United States. These left-wing institutions gave Muslims the best chance to survive against anti-Muslim forces largely represented by the conserva-

tive right. But embracing the left meant accepting an entire package of causes, some of which aligned ideologically with Islamic ethics (such as combatting racism), while others did not (such as the legalisation of certain drugs).

To be clear, Islamic law differentiates between a desire, which is in itself not sinful, and the deed, which could be a sin. Those struggling with same-sex desires but wishing to abide by Islamic law are our full brethren in faith and deserve all the love and rights of believers. They stand in contrast to those who flout Islamic law and take pride in disobedience.

Muslim politicians and influencers, in particular, should be careful not to make religious claims on behalf of our faith. Our politics is not our ideology and our ideology is neither left nor right. Our ideology is centred in our unshakeable faith, grounded in our immutable creed, and firmly rooted in

Deadly Russian strike on market in Ukraine kills 17

KYIV: A Russian strike killed at least 17 people at a market in east Ukraine Wednesday, officials said, in an attack that President Volodymyr Zelensky described as deliberate and “heinous”. Projectiles tore through the centre of Kostiantynivka — a town of nearly 70,000 people in the Donetsk region —

Ukraine’s newly appointed defence minister meanwhile vowed to liberate “every centimetre” of territory occupied by Russia in his first comments in the post. Rescue workers picked through the debris and carried some of the wounded for treatment past charred vehicles and kiosks torn to pieces in the blast, according to images distributed by officials. “Seventeen people were killed and 32 injured as a result of the Russian shelling,”

Interior Minister Igor Klymenko said, announcing the rescue operation had ended.

Blinken hails Ukraine counteroffensive as US announces $1bn in new aid

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has announced new aid for Ukraine totalling more than $1bn in a visit to Kyiv, including about $665m in new military and civilian security assistance, as he hailed the months-long counteroffensive against the Russian forces in the country’s southeast. The new US aid would include HIMARS missile launch systems, Javelin antitank weapons, Abrams tanks and other weapons systems, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Wednesday. The Pentagon said it would also send depleted uranium ammunition, which is highly effective at piercing armour plates, but their use is controversial. “In the ongoing counteroffensive, progress has accelerated in the past few weeks. This new assistance will help sustain it and build further momentum,” Blinken told reporters at a news conference with Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba on Wednesday that coincided with a Russian attack in

eastern Ukraine that killed at least 16 people. Al Jazeera’s Rosiland Jordan, reporting from Washington, said the latest military aid package is meant to support Ukraine in its counteroffensive. “The $175m that the US is providing in direct military aid is to support the Ukrainian military counteroffensive namely by providing among other things depleted uranium munitions that would be fired from Abrams tanks, 10 of which will be arriving in Ukraine mid-September,” she said. ..Source: aljazeera.com

Russian President Vladimir Putin has reiterated his stance on reinstating a United Nations-brokered deal to safely ship Ukrainian grain across the Black Sea only after the West meets Moscow’s

The Russian president’s remarks on Monday came after a meeting with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the Black Sea city of Sochi in the hope of reviving the agreement seen as vital for global food supplies, especially in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Russia refused to extend the deal in July, complaining that a parallel agreement promising to remove obstacles to Russian exports of food and fertiliser had not been honoured. It said restrictions on shipping and insurance hampered its agricultural trade, though it has shipped record amounts of wheat since last year. Putin reiterated those complaints and said that the Black Sea corridors should not be used for military purposes.

Modi’s lesson from Israel: Demolish Muslim homes,

erase their history

In early August, the world watched in horror as authorities in the northern Indian state of Haryana demolished more than 300 Muslim-owned homes and businesses in Nuh – the only Muslim-majority district in the state. Hindu right-wing groups in Haryana followed up the violence with calls to boycott Muslim businesses and for Hinduowned businesses to fire Muslim employees. Before the demolition drive, clashes broke out between Hindu and Muslim groups in Nuh when a procession led by the far-right Hindu organisation Vishwa Hindu Parishad reached the district. What we are witnessing is undoubtedly a consequence of the hateful rhetoric encouraged under the current Hindu nationalist regime.

Yet, the large-scale destruction of Muslim homes and properties in parts of the country like Nuh, where the community has lived for centuries, points to something even more sinister: a concerted effort to erase all

evidence of Muslim presence and heritage in the country. Is it paranoid to worry that this, in turn, could be a first step to triggering a full-fledged genocide?

Joint statement on BA.2.86 variant detected in B.C., first in Canada

VICTORIA - Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.’s provincial health officer, and Adrian Dix, Minister of Health, have issued the following statement regarding the BA.2.86 variant being detected in British Columbia:

“The BC Centre for Disease Control has identified British Columbia’s first case of a person infected with the BA.2.86 variant of Omicron in an individual from the Fraser Health region who has not travelled outside the province. It is the first known case in Canada of this variant. “So far, there does not seem to be increased severity with this strain of COVID and the individual is not hospitalized.

“We will continue to monitor the data on this

new variant under monitoring, which has been detected around the world, including in the United States. BA.2.86 was first detected in Denmark in July 2023.

“It was not unexpected for BA.2.86 to show up in Canada and the province. The risk to people in B.C. has not changed. COVID-19 continues to spread globally, and the virus continues to adapt. Reducing transmission and having high levels of protection through vaccination continue to be our best defence against all variants of COVID-19. People who are vaccinated are less likely to get seriously ill from COVID-19 or require hospitalization.

“This detection of the Omicron subvariant

BA.2.86 reflects the ongoing data monitoring and surveillance in B.C., including continued testing of people with COVID-19 symptoms and innovative new wastewater surveillance. The latest wastewater surveillance with whole genome sequencing shows no other detections of this strain of the virus so far; data continues to show XBB 1.5 is still the most common subvariant being reported in B.C. We continue to monitor data and information as the virus evolves worldwide.

“We urge all people in B.C. to continue to follow public-health advice and to stay home when sick, wear masks when appropriate, follow respiratory etiquette, wash hands fre-

quently, and, most importantly, stay up to date on your vaccinations.”

B.C. Supreme Court partially certifies personal injury class-action lawsuit against Kleenex manufacturer

B.C. woman argues she belongs to a class that suffered personal injury from contaminated Cottonelle wipes. Sep, 2,2023

The B.C. Supreme Court has partially certified a class-action lawsuit against KimberlyClark Corporation, the maker of Kleenex, after the company produced flushable wipes that were contaminated with bacteria. The suit was brought forward by Linda Bowman, a British Columbia resident who purchased Cottonelle wipes at Costco on July 17, 2020. She allegedly experienced exacerbated body pain and developed inflamed skin follicles and sores from using the wipes.

According to the court decision released on Aug. 28, that may have been due to the wipes being contaminated with the bacteria Pluralibacter gergoviae, which KimberlyClark maintained was “intermittent and infrequent” in a certain production line. The product was subsequently recalled, and some customers were refunded. Bowman, however, argued the manufacturing giant did not do enough to compensate those who bought the contaminated wipes, and its recall notice was not circulated widely enough. In the decision, Justice Sharon Matthews agreed that those who suffered an injury from using the wipes may be compensated from a successful class-action lawsuit. “Kimberly-Clark has not provided any evidence of the quantum of compensation provided to personal injury claimants, the method by which they obtained the compensation, or how appropriate compensation was determined,” the judgment reads. “I am not satisfied that the

compensation provided has been adequate because there is simply no evidence about it.” Matthews, however, did not agree with all of the plaintiff’s claims, including that the recall program was not well circulated and that Kimberly-Clark misled customers who suffered economic consequences.

In an emailed statement to CBC News, a spokesperson for Kimberly-Clark said the company was “disappointed” in the decision but plans to “vigorously defend” the Cottonnelle brand in court. “We appreciate that the Court significantly narrowed the scope of the case and noted that Kimberly-Clark ‘takes its responsibilities as a manufacturer seriously’ and that the company should be ‘recognized and lauded’ for its efforts,” the spokesperson wrote. “Kimberly-Clark and its Cottonelle brand are deeply committed to the safety and quality of our products, and the well-being of the consumers who use them is a priority to us.”

The Future of Work: Navigating the Shift Towards Remote and Flexible Employment

In today’s rapidly evolving landscape, the future of work is undergoing a profound transformation. The traditional 9-to-5 office job is no longer the sole path to professional success. As technology continues to advance and the world becomes increasingly interconnected, remote and flexible employment options are becoming the new norm. This shift opens up exciting possibilities for individuals seeking better work-life balance, increased autonomy, and the freedom to pursue their passions. However, it also presents unique challenges and requires a reimagining of traditional workplace structures. It’s important to delve into the multifaceted nature of remote and flexible work, exploring its benefits, drawbacks, and the strategies needed to navigate this evolving landscape. Let’s uncover the opportunities and complexities that lie ahead and discover how this paradigm shift in the way we work is reshaping the future of employment. As we embrace the future of work, it is evident that remote and flexible employment offers a multitude of benefits for both individuals and organizations. For employees, the ability to work from anywhere provides unprecedented freedom and flexibility. It eliminates the need for long commutes, allows for a better work-life balance, and enables individuals to design their own ideal work environment. Moreover, remote work opens up opportunities for individuals who may have previously been excluded from traditional office

settings, such as those with disabilities or caregivers who need to balance work and family responsibilities. On the other hand, organizations can tap into a global talent pool, enabling them to attract and retain top talent regardless of geographical location. Additionally, remote work has been shown to increase employee productivity and satisfaction, leading to higher levels of engagement and reduced turnover. However, it is essential to acknowledge the potential challenges that come with remote work, such as the need for effective communication and collaboration tools, the importance of maintaining work-life boundaries, and the potential for social isolation. Navigating this shift towards remote and flexible employment requires a proactive approach from both employers and employees. By embracing new technologies, fostering a culture of trust and accountability, and providing adequate support and resources, organizations can create an environment where remote work thrives. Likewise, individuals must cultivate selfdiscipline, effective time management, and clear communication skills to succeed in this evolving landscape. As we navigate this transformative era, it is crucial to embrace the potential of remote and flexible work while addressing the challenges it presents, ensuring that the future of work is one that is inclusive, productive, and fulfilling for all. As we delve deeper into the future of work, it becomes evident that remote and flexible employment is a fundamental shift in how we approach work. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated this transformation, forcing organizations and individuals to adapt to remote work on a global scale. This unprecedented experience highlighted the resilience and adaptability of remote work, proving that it can be a viable long- term solution. Furthermore, the pandemic also shed light on the importance of flexibility in the face

of unforeseen circumstances. Organizations that were already embracing remote work and flexible employment models were better equipped to navigate the challenges and disruptions caused by the pandemic. This realization has sparked a paradigm shift in how we view work, with many organizations reevaluating the need for traditional office spaces and embracing a hybrid work model that combines remote and in-person work. However, it is crucial to recognize that remote work is not a one-size-fits-all solution. While it offers numerous benefits, it may not suit all industries or job roles. Some professions require in-person collaboration, faceto-face interactions, and specialized equipment. Therefore, a thoughtful and strategic approach is necessary to determine the optimal balance between remote and in-person work for each organization. The future of work lies in finding this balance and creating an inclusive and flexible work environment that meets the needs of both employers and employees. The potential challenges and implications that come with remote and flexible employment are unavoidable. While remote work offers convenience and flexibility, it also presents unique obstacles that both employers and employees must address. One significant concern is the potential for decreased work-life balance. Without clear boundaries between work and personal life, individuals may find themselves constantly connected and unable to disconnect from work-related responsibilities. Additionally, remote work can lead to feelings of isolation and a lack of social interaction, which may impact employee morale and mental well-being. Employers must prioritize fostering a sense of community and connection among remote workers through regular communication, virtual team-building activities, and opportunities for collaboration.

Furthermore, it is crucial to address the issue

of equitable access to remote work opportunities. Not everyone has access to a reliable internet connection or a suitable work environment at home, which can create disparities in employment opportunities. Organizations need to ensure that remote work policies are inclusive and provide necessary support and resources to all employees. By proactively addressing these challenges, we can maximize the benefits of remote and flexible employment while mitigating potential drawbacks. In conclusion, the future of work is undoubtedly undergoing a transformative shift towards remote and flexible employment. This shift brings numerous opportunities for individuals and organizations alike. As we navigate this new landscape, it is essential for employers to prioritize effective communication, foster a sense of community, and provide necessary support and resources to remote workers. We must also ensure equitable access to remote work opportunities and address the potential impact on mental health and work-life balance. By embracing the benefits of remote and flexible employment while proactively addressing the associated challenges, we can shape a future of work that is inclusive, sustainable, and conducive to both individual and organizational success. Together, embrace this shift and create a future where work is not bound by physical constraints but driven by innovation, collaboration, and personal fulfillment. By: Khadija Nadeem, Gr 12

Fill vacant positions or close Surrey Memorial hospital ER to incoming patients,

ER diversion not necessary, minister says

In an interview on Tuesday, Dix said the province has an “offer on the table” to settle stalled contract negotiations with potential hospitalists for SMH and other hospitals.

new letter says Medical Staff Association says current situation leaves patients ‘in jeopardy’

Last Updated: May 30

Anew letter from the association representing doctors at Surrey Memorial Hospital has called on health-care leaders to either fill vacant positions in the emergency room or shut down the department to new patients.

The cutting letter from the Medical Staff Association at SMH said an ongoing shortage of hospitalists, or house doctors, has made it “increasingly difficult, if not impossible,” for doctors to give patients the level of care they need. “Your continued silence and inaction on this issue is placing the health and wellbeing of Surrey residents in jeopardy,” read the letter, addressed to Fraser Health CEO Dr. Victoria Lee, Health Minister Adrian Dix and other leaders.

“We implore you to take immediate action to bolster the availability of hospitalists physicians to the ED at SMH, and if you cannot do this, the only responsible recourse is to place the Surrey Memorial Hospital ER on diversion.”

Doctors of B.C. says ERs across province ‘overrun’, urgent action needed

The letter was sent May 19 and obtained by CBC News on Tuesday. The association said it has not received a response from Lee or Dix. “It’s disheartening and it’s disappointing. One of the things that we want is at least an acknowledgement of what is happening,” said association president Dr. Roopjeet Kahlon. Hospitals are put on diversion when they are too overwhelmed to safely accommodate new patients. On diversion, emergency departments do not accept incoming patients until it recovers to a more manageable patient load. “Unless you can immediately bolster the physician availability in that emergency department to see the volume coming in, it doesn’t make sense to continue to keep the doors open and say, ‘You can come, and you will be given the highest quality of care,’ and then expect the physicians on the ground to figure out how to make that happen,” Kahlon said in an interview with CBC’s On The Coast.

“If you can’t immediately address at least the basics, the only responsible thing to do is to put the hospital ER on diversion.”

The minister said hospital demand has been high in the region since January when daily patient numbers reached record heights during flu season. “There is absolutely no question that Fraser Health hospitals are doing more emergency room visits, more surgeries, more diagnostic care than at any time in the past, and this is very challenging after three years of pandemic,” said Dix.

“So when people raise issues, you bet we respond, and we listen to what they say.”

The minister said he does not have plans to put Surrey’s ER on diversion.

“I don’t think that’s required,” he said. Dangerous log jam happening in ER, doctors say

In their own letters this month, doctors running Surrey’s emergency room explained why the lack of house doctors has pushed their units past the breaking point.

ER doctors are only meant to diagnose and stabilize patients so they can be admitted to the appropriate ward for comprehensive treatment. Without enough hospitalists admitting patients to the next ward, patients end up stranded in the ER for as long as three days. It’s left to emergency physicians to care for those lingering patients, as new ones keep coming in the door, leading to what doctors described as a dangerous traffic jam. “It should come as no surprise then to anyone paying attention that patient care is being compromised, patients are deteriorating, and the number of preventable deaths is rising in our overcrowded and understaffed ER,” the association’s letter read.

Earlier Tuesday, leading doctors from SMH met with politicians and other community stakeholders at city hall in hopes of finding solutions to the resourcing “crisis.”

The Surrey Hospitals Foundation said the meeting was closed to the public, but community leaders spoke outside city hall before it started.

“The letter that we saw yesterday was absolutely beyond gut-wrenching. It was tragic, and it shows how far we have fallen in health-care in Surrey,” said Trevor Halford, the MLA for Surrey-White Rock.

“To say that I’m concerned would be a complete understatement,” added Surrey South MLA Elenore Sturko. “I am very concerned for the well-being of our health-care providers and the well-being of our community.”

Another letter from nearly 40 doctors in

obstetrics and gynecology at SMH said resourcing problems have led to “countless near misses” with patient safety and the death of a newborn in 2021. The physicians also said B.C. Women’s Hospital and St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver receive more department funding, despite seeing fewer OBGYN patients than SMH.

“Surrey’s [population] growth has been tremendous, there’s no doubt about that, but when we look at where dollars are spent by the provincial and federal governments, it’s north of the Fraser [River] every single time,” Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke said outside city hall on Tuesday.

Former mayor Dianne Watts said local health care saw “significant” investments during her tenure but echoed Locke in saying funding has not kept pace with population growth. Source: cbc.ca/news

Miracle’s Note:

In the above 3 months ago newsletter, are there any significant changes came in Doctor’s visit in Emergency? Every resident of Surrey, Delta, are passing their 6 to 10 hours waiting period and treatment experience, while the city’s population grew by more than nine percent between 2016 and 2021, reached 560,000 people, and today is Sept, 2023.

Toronto patient waiting for hospital bed watched for 48 hours as ER staff dealt with flood of sick patients 2023 and only one hospital is serving.

A Toronto woman who waited 48 hours in an urban emergency unit can attest to the crisis doctors and nurses say is crippling emergency rooms.

“Until you are in it, you don’t really understand how desperate and critical it is. Why everyone is not up in arms … that just is stunning. It’s unbelievable,” said Siobhan Mitchell. She says she went to emergency

emergency cases come in, there is nowhere to care for them.

Doctors reported to CTV News they’ve treated patients in waiting room chairs and bathrooms. One doctor even said he resuscitated a patient in the EMS van because there was no room to revive the patient in the ER.

“We … have to see patients in these unconventional spaces, like driveways, like closets, that patients don’t expect and they certainly deserve better,” said Varner. Nurses too report added stress caring for additional patients in ERs.

SOLUTIONS

Everyone CTV News spoke to agreed that while COVID-19 made things worse in hospitals, it isn’t the sole reason behind the overcrowded ERs.

The rise in demand is linked to a growing and aging population, as well as staffing shortages caused by an exodus of nursing and medical staff during the pandemic. More in-hospital beds is clearly one solution, Varner said, who points to data from the OECD showing Canada has among the lowest hospital bed-to-population ratios of some developed countries. ”Why are there not more acute care hospital beds and staff to care for patients that need hospitalization and why are we not trying to retain our experienced hospital staff, who unfortunately have been burned out through the course of the pandemic and the years that have followed? These are questions that I asked often and don’t receive a lot of answers to,” Varner said.

Worrall agrees there are also inefficient hospital systems that need to be redesigned. “Money is very welcome throughout the system, but I don’t believe it will have a meaningful impact on emergency department crowding. Because we’re going to keep doing things the same way we always have, we’re not going to change the way we choose to move patients through the system,” he said. Earlier this year, the federal government gave the provinces and territories an immediate, unconditional $2-billion Canada Health Transfer on top of a record $198.6 billion to address immediate pressures on the health care system. But there were no strings attached on how it would be used.

What is artificial intelligence (AI)?

Artificial intelligence is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems. Specific applications of AI include expert systems, natural language processing, speech recognition and machine vision. How does AI work?

As the hype around AI has accelerated,

vendors have been scrambling to promote how their products and services use it. Often, what they refer to as AI is simply a component of the technology, such as machine learning. AI requires a foundation of specialized hardware and software for writing and training machine learning algorithms.

No single programming language is synonymous with AI, but Python, R, Java, C++

in mid-August and was admitted for urgent gallbladder surgery, but there were no beds.

Hidden Harms Of Er Overcrowding

Emergency units are designed to work like a tube where patients go in and are quickly assessed, treated or moved to rehab, a hospital bed or home. They are not designed for people to stay there for long periods. As new

“As a health-care team, we are disheartened, dispirited and have lost all hope that our leaders even understand the magnitude of the issues that face us. God help us all,” said veteran ER doctor Alan Drummond, the past president of the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians. His group is calling for a national forum to come up with a cross-country plan to fix the problem fast.

“This would not allow each provincial government to ... continue the current approach ... with no chance of success,” he said.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

and Julia have features popular with AI developers.

In general, AI systems work by ingesting large amounts of labeled training data, analyzing the data for correlations and patterns, and using these patterns to make predictions about future states. In this way, a chatbot that is fed examples of text can learn to generate lifelike exchanges with people, or an image recognition tool can learn to identify and describe objects in images by reviewing millions of examples. New, rapidly improving generative AI techniques can create realistic text, images, music and other media.

AI programming focuses on cognitive skills that include the following:

Learning. This aspect of AI programming focuses on acquiring data and creating rules for how to turn it into actionable information. The rules, which are called algorithms, provide computing devices with step-by-step instructions for how to complete a specific task.

Reasoning. This aspect of AI programming focuses on choosing the right algorithm to reach a desired outcome. Self-correction. This aspect of AI programming is designed to continually fine-tune algorithms and ensure they provide the most accurate results possible.

An interview with Canadian Immigration Consultant Emraan Amir

Immigration consultants are skilled in the process of relocating individuals from one region to another. Immigration consultants use this expertise to aid clients with all aspects of this procedure.

‘The Miracle’ got a chance to sit down with Mr. Emraan Amir last week and learn more about him and his profession. Here is what he had to say:

The Miracle (TM): First, please tell Miracle’s readers, a little about yourself, your back home, your education, and your experience, when you migrated to Canada.

Emraan Amir (EA): By grace of almighty Allah I come from a family of lawyers and para legal. I have done my studies from UBC and CDI college specialising in immigration consultation, further pursuing my studies and getting licenced from college of immigration and citizenship Canada. We are regulated Canadian immigration consultants having office in DELTA ,BC and Missisauga, ONT.

TM: When and why did you decide to choose an Immigration Consultant carrier?

EA: Actaully when in England I was into partly into immigration for students who wanted to pursue further studies in UK. But when I decided to move to Canada I did my whole immigration application and process myself, I found it very straight forward yet challenging for me . I could feel the stress and emotional drain the others must be feeling while trying to migrate to Canada, that was 1 of the main triggers for me to get into this profession. I wanted to make the whole process easy , honest, transparent and stress free.

TM: Which countries have you helped clients to relocate to?

EA: We majorly work with Canadian immigration but sometime also help people to migrate to UK, Australia, New Zealand , Poland etc. through our network of partner consultants in those countries.

Creativity. This aspect of AI uses neural networks, rules-based systems, statistical methods and other AI techniques to generate new images, new text, new music and new ideas.

Why is artificial intelligence important?

AI is important for its potential to change how we live, work and play. It has been effectively used in business to automate tasks done by humans, including customer service work, lead generation, fraud detection and quality control. In a number of areas, AI can perform tasks much better than humans. Particularly when it comes to repetitive, detail-oriented tasks, such as analyzing large numbers of legal documents to ensure relevant fields are filled in properly, AI tools often complete jobs quickly and with relatively few errors. Because of the massive data sets it can process, AI can also give enterprises insights into their operations they might not have been aware of. The rapidly expanding population of generative AI tools will be important in fields ranging from education and marketing to product design Indeed, advances in AI techniques have not only helped fuel an explosion in efficiency, but opened the door to entirely new business opportunities for some larger enterprises. Prior to the current wave of AI, it would have been hard to imagine using computer software to connect riders to taxis, but Uber has become a Fortune 500 company by doing just that.

AI has become central to many of today’s largest and most successful companies, including Alphabet, Apple, Microsoft and Meta, where AI technologies are used to improve operations and outpace competitors. At Alphabet subsidiary Google, for example, AI is central to its search engine, Waymo’s self-driving cars

TM: Which documents should clients complete if they wish to relocate?

EA: We have a simplified check list for each client who wants to visit or migrate to Canada, to further simplify we have it in 5 different languages which makes it easier for clients to understand. Different types of visa have different documents requirements and its very case specific.

TM: What are some of the reasons given by the government for rejection in immigration cases?

EA: There are numerous reasons due to which a file can rejected and not limited to which includes medical, criminality, wrong type of forms, lack of family ties back home ,financials, wrong or misleading info etc. That’s where we come into the picture and we do a through assement and evaluation before any submission hence resulting in high success rate.

TM: What is the most interesting case in your career so far?

EA: Every case is unique and different in its own sense but we take pride in getting refused cases approved and refugee cases, we also specialise inhelping Canadian employers hire foreign workers through

LMIA

TM: What is your success rate?

EA: There is specific rate as such but with grace of Allah the almight with our profession team our success rate is quite higher, you can say about 80 percent.

TM: What would you do if a client need to relocate in short period?

EA: We would advice him not to rush as immigration is a life changing and a very major decision and we cannot rush things in this.

TM: Tell us more about your Immigration consulting firm.

EA: We are regulated by the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC). ICCRC is the national regulatory body in Canada. Starwayz Immigration and Consulting ltd.

It is a Canadian based consulting firm. We provide professional immigration and consulting services to clients from around the world. Starwayz has etched its own elite niche by providing the immigration & consulting services that have made a positive impact on many lives.

Immigrating to Canada is exiting but sometime may be a daunting process, filled with challenges and complexities. We are committed to assist clients throughout the process in a friendly and competent way. We adhere to a strict code of conduct providing only genuine and quality advice for all processes in accordance with updated laws.

TM: How you can help the people over here for their loved ones to bring in Canada?

EA: This program is a part of family class sponsorship program. A Canadian Citizen and/or Permanent Resident may sponsor a spouse, common-law partner, or Conjugal Partner for Canadian permanent residence under this program. Both the Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident and the foreign national must be approved by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for the sponsored person to receive a visa.

The Sponsor and the Sponsored Person must be legally married. A Certificate of Marriage from the province or territory where the marriage took place is required if the marriage took place in Canada. Same sex marriages performed within Canada are valid for spousal sponsorship.

If the marriage took place outside of Canada, it must be valid under the law of the country where it took place as well as under Canadian federal law.

TM: How do you facilitate the outside Canada direct calls to get your services?

EA: We have a specialised team to assist those trying to connect to us from outside Canada through various social media platforms , WhatsApp calling etc.

TM: How the Study permit visa holders

can easily get PR?

EA: The route to PR for international students is that once they graduate from recognised institution the get a post graduate work permit for 2 or 3 years depending on the nature of their studies. Once they get this work permit they can work full time and gather points towards their BCPNP or PR application.

TM: Any interested or complicated case in your professional carrier, can you tell us, how you handled that?

EA: To me lots of international students are violating their study permit requirements due to which they get subject to deportations or removal orders, we do assist such cases as well and these types of cases are particularly very tricky and hard to address.

TM: Any strong immigration tips you want to deliver through Miracle’s in your office located at 1192, 80 Ave, Delta, BC on 604.655.0845?

EA: Always respect the Canadian immigration laws and follow it and never try to get involved in any kind criminal/illegal activities or violate the terms of your visas or permits. You are in or going to be in one of the best countries in the world so respect that and make your future.

TM: Thanks for your time and best of luck in your business.

EA: Thanks to you too, for taking out the time and visiting us.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

and Google Brain, which invented the transformer neural network architecture that underpins the recent breakthroughs in natural language processing.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of artificial intelligence?

Artificial neural networks and deep learning AI technologies are quickly evolving, primarily because AI can process large amounts of data much faster and make predictions more accurately than humanly possible. While the huge volume of data created on a daily basis would bury a human researcher, AI applications using machine learning can take that data and quickly turn it into actionable information. As of this writing, a primary disadvantage of AI is that it is expensive to process the large amounts of data AI programming requires. As AI techniques are incorporated into more products and services, organizations must also be attuned to AI’s potential to create biased and discriminatory systems, intentionally or inadvertently.

Advantages of AI

The following are some advantages of AI. Good at detail-oriented jobs. AI has proven to be as good or better than doctors at diagnosing certain cancers, including breast cancer and melanoma.

Reduced time for data-heavy tasks.

AI is widely used in data-heavy industries, including banking and securities, pharma and insurance, to reduce the time it takes to analyze big data sets. Financial services, for example, routinely use AI to process loan applications and detect fraud.

Saves labor and increases productivity.

An example here is the use of warehouse automation, which grew during the pandemic and is expected to increase with the integration of

AI and machine learning.

Delivers consistent results. The best AI translation tools deliver high levels of consistency, offering even small businesses the ability to reach customers in their native language. Can improve customer satisfaction through personalization. AI can personalize content, messaging, ads, recommendations and websites to individual customers.

AI-powered virtual agents are always available. AI programs do not need to sleep or take breaks, providing 24/7 service.

Disadvantages of AI

The following are some disadvantages of AI.

Expensive.

• Requires deep technical expertise.

• Limited supply of qualified workers to build AI tools.

• Reflects the biases of its training data,

• at scale.

• Lack of ability to generalize from one task to another.

• Eliminates human jobs, increasing

• unemployment rates.

Strong AI vs. weak AI

AI can be categorized as weak or strong. Weak AI, also known as narrow AI, is designed and trained to complete a specific task. Industrial robots and virtual personal assistants, such as Apple’s Siri, use weak AI.

Strong AI, also known as artificial general intelligence (AGI), describes programming that can replicate the cognitive abilities of the human brain. When presented with an unfamiliar task, a strong AI system can use fuzzy logic to apply knowledge from one domain to another and find a solution autonomously. In theory, a strong AI program should be able to pass both a Turing test and the Chinese Room

argument.

What are the 4 types of artificial intelligence?

Arend Hintze, an assistant professor of integrative biology and computer science and engineering at Michigan State University, explained that AI can be categorized into four types, beginning with the task-specific intelligent systems in wide use today and progressing to sentient systems, which do not yet exist. The categories are as follows.

Type 1: Reactive machines. These AI systems have no memory and are task-specific. An example is Deep Blue, the IBM chess program that beat Garry Kasparov in the 1990s. Deep Blue can identify pieces on a chessboard and make predictions, but because it has no memory, it cannot use past experiences to inform future ones.

Type 2: Limited memory.

These AI systems have memory, so they can use past experiences to inform future decisions. Some of the decision-making functions in self-driving cars are designed this way.

Type 3: Theory of mind. Theory of mind is a psychology term.

When applied to AI, it means the system would have the social intelligence to understand emotions. This type of AI will be able to infer human intentions and predict behavior, a necessary skill for AI systems to become integral members of human teams.

Type 4: Self-awareness. In this category, AI systems have a sense of self, which gives them consciousness. Machines with self-awareness understand their own current state. This type of AI does not yet exist...

September 6, the pakistan’s Defence Day: a tale of Courage and heroism

On September 6, 1965, the Indian army crossed Pakistan’s international borders without a formal declaration of war. They targeted Lahore, Sialkot, and the desert areas of Sindh. The war lasted until September 22, 1965, when both sides agreed to a UNsupervised cease-fire.

THE LAHORE OFFENSIVE

The Indians crossed the international boundary of West Pakistan at 3 a.m. on September 6, 1965, and launched a threepronged onslaught against Lahore. On the Punjabi plains, there was a fierce tank battle. The domestic Indo-Pak dispute escalated into an international conflict, raising concerns among superpowers.

This action by India was a clear violation of international law, the United Nations Charter, and principles of civilized behaviour among countries. In its arrogant aim to conquer the region, India tossed aside its international commitments.

In the hardest of times, living nations emerge stronger and more resilient. When the enemy threatened our survival in the 1965 war, the Pakistani people stood steadfast and resolute. To this date, every year on September 6th, Pakistan celebrates Defence Day to honour Pakistan’s successful defence against India, which marked the end of the 1965 war.

The entire world has watched the Pakistani nation’s devotion and tremendous sacrifices in standing firm with its military forces during difficult times. So, on this day, the entire nation honours the Ghazis and Shuhada who fulfilled their responsibilities to defend the motherland.

In addition, the Pakistani armed forces personified the spirit of bravery and selfless sacrifice in defending the country’s territorial boundaries. Thus, we pay homage to the valiant Shuhada who gave their precious lives in order to defend their country.

What Happened On Sept 6, 1965?

Synopsis

The Indian invasion of Lahore was repulsed, and the invaders suffered terrible losses. With the assistance of the Pakistan Air Force, the Pakistan Army’s ground defence troops were able to delay and then repel the Indian attack.

THE SIALKOT INVASION

On September 8, exactly two days after the Lahore attack, India launched its main attack against Sialkot, employing its armoured division and other strike formations. The largest tank battles since World War II took place during this seventeen-day conflict.

India suffered from major casualties in this war. Pakistan repelled an invasion of its territory by an enemy four times its size, and the entire nation rose to the occasion with strong resolve.

Every kid, man, and woman contributed to the war effort, whether it was to raise funds, train as civilian guards, or work

as nurses in hospitals. HOW DID THE WAR COME TO AN END?

The United Nations led the main diplomatic effort to end the conflict, and a truce was declared on September 23, 1965. The events that took place are as follows:

During the Indo-Pak War, the United States stopped military supplies to both sides.

The Soviet Union and the United States established a united stance to prevent the war within the subcontinent from escalating into global warfare.

China threatened to interfere and promised Pakistan military assistance.

Both the Soviet Union and the United States pressured the United Nations to negotiate a rapid ceasefire in order to keep China out of this conflict.

The Soviet Union, which had remained neutral during India’s and Pakistan’s conflict, then acted as a mediator in Tashkent.

On December 8, a Soviet government communiqué formally stated that Indian Prime Minister Shastri and Pakistani President Ayyub Khan would meet in Tashkent on January 4, 1966.

The USSR’s efforts at mediation led to the conclusion of the war, and a peace treaty was signed in Tashkent.

THE MARTYRS OF THE 1965 WAR

So many people have lost their lives fighting for our country in this war. However, 11 of the soldiers showed extraordinary heroism

and were awarded the Nishan-e-Haider. Major Aziz Bhatti won the highest Nishan-eHaider award for his exceptional role in defending the Bedian region of Lahore in 1965.

HOW IS DEFENCE DAY CELEBRATED IN PAKISTAN?

Every year, Pakistan celebrates this day and pays tribute to the Shuhada with great zeal and zest. The multiple ways we honour the sacrifices of our brave heroes are as follows:

‘CHANGE OF GUARDS’ CEREMONY

The ‘change of guards’ ritual occurs every 6th of September at Mizar-e-Qaid and Iqbal’s mausoleum. The new cadets of the Pakistani Army replace their comrades on guard duty.

PARADES

The Pakistan Army displays its heaviest weaponry, including tanks, missiles, and aircraft, each year as part of the celebrations on Defence Day. The parades and air shows occur across many cities in Pakistan.

TV SHOWS

In addition to attending the parades in person, you should watch the Defence Day events in Pakistan live from the comfort of your own home. All major news channels are broadcasting live coverage of the events. To maintain the spirit of sacrifice and patriotism, special documentaries featuring officers who are either active-duty or retired are broadcast.

PAKISTAN: A MORE POWERFUL NATION AFTER THE 1965 WAR

Pakistan emerged from the September 1965 war with India as a strong and self-assured country, proud of itself and its military capabilities. We stood as one nation. With the assistance of the government, Pakistan’s Armed Forces repulsed India’s naked aggression across the international border. We forced them to accept a truce, return to the negotiating table, and quit each other’s territory. It was certainly the greatest hour of glory, and a day to remember for future generations of civilians and soldiers.
