On September 8, Marrakesh and several other towns were struck by a 6.8 magnitude earthquake. There are reports of entire villages in remote mountain areas being completely destroyed. The death toll from this powerful earthquake in Morocco has now risen to over 2,600, with a similar number of people injured. Many individuals are having to spend another night outside without shelter. It is believed that numerous simple homes made of mud brick, stone, and timber in the mountain villages have collapsed. However, assessing the full extent of the devastation in these remote regions will take some time.

Traditional scholarship’s divides Prophet Muhammad’s life into Makkan and Madinahn phases. This is chronologically valid and represents the two broad aspects of his life before and after the watershed event of the Migration. It is historically important and marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar. Additionally I believe Muhammad’s struggle can be naturally divided into seven phases. Each phase brings forth a different aspect of his personality and highlights a different facet of his mission. Studying the Messenger’s mission for its various phases and analyzing its internal dynamics is important as it gives the narrative relevance for today. Since his life is better documented than the lives of other prophets and leaders of major world religions, it is possible to build this analysis on a historical foundation.
The Search for Light in a Period of Darkness: The Seeker of Truth
As his biography (Seera) is recorded we find Prophet Muhammad pondering over societal ills for years. The society he was born in was in a state of moral, religious, economic and social chaos. It is difficult to resist drawing analogies between the seventh century world and the state of the human morality in today’s world at the beginning of the new millennium. The nuclear man-woman two-parent family, as a core unit of society has eroded seriously in the West. Brazen sexual exploitation in the media is commonplace and illicit sex condoned and even accepted. Violence at home, against women, children, and violence in the streets, is frightfully routine. Substance abuse is widespread, with United States as the largest consumer of drugs in the world. Alcoholism is rampant, especially among college students, with only feeble attempts being made to address the problem. African- Americans have been liberated as slaves for a century and a half, yet many are still trapped in an unending cycle of poverty and discrimination, which is in a way a form of economic slavery. Because of a system that allows unrestrained growth of wealth without encouraging proper redistribution, economic disparities and injustices continue to grow at an alarming rate. There are many excellent characteristics in Western societies, especially in the US that include the freedom of thought, speech and assembly, a tolerant attitude toward eccentricities in human nature and an ambition to be a just and compassionate society. These qualities of the ordinary American however are not always reflected in the policy makers and political leaders.
The unraveling of the moral fabric in today’s society must weigh heavily on the minds of individuals with insight. They can draw personal solace and inspiration from the Prophet’s life. The Arab tribal society of the Seventh century, whose
Abu Hurayrah (ra), who said that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Allah will say on the Day of Resurrection: Where are those who love one another through My glory? Today I shall give them shade in My shade, it being a day when there is no shade but My shade. It was related by al-Bukhari (also by Malik).
The Seven Phases of Prophet Muhammad’s Life
structure was based on greed, debauchery, and violence, was changed in a very short time, by the Prophet, into a society with one of the highest moral standards in history. Compassion, humility, devotion to God and egalitarianism replaced the old well-entrenched tribal attitudes of pride in wealth, family and class and self-centered behavior. Women, for the first time in history, had rights and dignity, and the vulnerable and weak sections of the society were protected. Sexuality was removed from public prurience and became private and wholesome. Wealth was re-circulated so that even the poorest segments of the society were infused with energy and indigence became nearly extinct.
The Warner and Exhorter
During one his meditative trips to a cave near Makkah, Prophet Muhammad receives the revelation. Divine revelation is the reaffirmation of the fact that celestial knowledge is essential in guiding the inherently limited human intellect. The profundity of this realization that he is the recipient of this divine revelation and the enormity of the task ahead overawes him. Initially he shares the message only with his closest family and a few loyal supporters. It is both fascinating and revealing that even the individual who would later be rated as the most influential man in human history had these initial periods of doubt and uncertainty about his mission. It was the reassurance from the Quran and the confidence and support of his wife Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her), and his close companions which provided him the support he needs-surely a lesson for us lesser mortals!
The Stoic Optimist
The next facet of his life is of bringing about proactive change by inviting people (Dawa) to Islam. With it comes the inevitable hostility of the entrenched powers in the society. Change is always threatening, and the greater the change, the more threatening it is. This would be true of the change against any established system of practices, whether it be economic, social or behavioral. It would also be true for change in personal behavior like wearing immodest clothing, promiscuity, and consumption of intoxicants. Changing attitudes that valued pride in wealth and country or class and color of the skin over all else would also be difficult. Not surprisingly the struggle for change becomes life threatening. Muhammad (Peace be upon him) had to lay his life on the line and on several occasions the nascent Muslim community faced the possibility of total extinction. Fortitude in the face of adversity is the salient feature of this phase. The patience and stoicism Muhammad displays during this phase has been a source of strength to many a Muslim who has found himself beleaguered by apparently hopeless circumstances
The Pluralistic Leader
The Migration, which marks the beginning of the next phase, involves careful planning and meticulous execution. He demonstrates that self-help and reliance on Allah go together and are both essential for success. With his nomination by the community in Madinah to a position
of leadership, he shows another facet of his personality: the capacity to create a truly pluralistic society with equity and dignity for all religious and ethnic groups. In a very short period after the Migration to Madinah, Muhammad proves he is capable of uniting various factions and setting exemplary standards of cooperation between them. He makes a seamless switch from being a person under constant persecution to a leader with a large administrative and judicial responsibility.
The “Covenant (Constitution) of Madinah” that lays out the rules of living in a pluralistic society is a document that needs to be studied carefully and implemented to the fullest extent in today’s inescapably multi-religious and multi-cultural world.
The Courageous Yet Reluctant Warrior
After a brief respite, his mission is consumed by the need to fight wars of survival. These three wars in four years, Badr, Uhad and Ahzab, besides posing a physical threat, must have been extremely distracting and demanding of his time and energy. Yet the work of building the community goes on. It is important to remember that even though faced with very aggressive proponents the Prophet and his followers never initiated or instigated any wars. Muhammad and the Muslims engaged in these battles with great discipline, avoiding injury to the innocent and using only the minimum force needed. Women, children and non-combatants were not to be harmed. When the enemy stopped fighting, he was to be given immediate sanctuary. Striking a blow in anger, even in battle, was prohibited. He uses innovative strategies in the battles, which include the use of the trench as a defense. During the digging of the trench he is an active participant. He consults frequently (Shura) with his companions and follows the majority opinion (Ijma’), even when it sometimes goes against his own judgment.
nential increase in the number of Muslims. This also allows the building of a model and just society that functions in a coherent manner. Wealth is allowed to be accumulated but has to be circulated fairly into even the tiniest capillaries of the community’s economic system. It is an egalitarian society with equity and justice for all, governed by mutual consultation, equality before the law and protection of its most vulnerable members, women, children, orphans, indigents and slaves.
As illustrated by many incidents from this phase of his life, the Prophet proves to be an exemplary statesman. He mediates disputes, defuses potentially explosive situations with ease, allowing the parties to the conflict to walk away as friends and allies. He is unafraid to take risks but is never reckless and compromises for the sake of peace. His emissaries to other nations bring with them a message of cooperation seeking common ground. When he gives a pledge, he always keeps it. If the other party breaks the pledge, he does not flinch from measures that are appropriate to maintain the sanctity of the pledge.
The Compassionate Ruler and Spiritual Leader.
The final phase begins with the conquest of Makkah, which is a demonstration of meticulous planning and the use of overwhelming force to achieve a victory with practically no loss of life on either side of the battle front. The stunning magnanimity and humility shown during victory by Muhammad and his companions is unmatched in history. He is humble in victory, compassionate, and forgiving to even his most intractable opponents.
The final sermon consolidates the social, economic, and moral changes that have been brought about in the society. It is time to prepare for the end.
The
Statesman Par Excellence and Teacher
During the next phase, he shows the capacity to compromise and demonstrates the foresight and wisdom to realize that peace, even at seemingly unfavorable terms, is better than hostility. The “Treaty of Hudaybia” also needs to be studied and emulated by all who negotiate with their opponents. The peace dividend, following this treaty with the Quraysh, is huge and results in an expo-
The anatomy of the mission, its growth and evolution in some ways parallels the various stages of human life itself. These various phases reflect not only the growing sophistication of the message but also the increasing maturity of the audience to whom the message is directed. The audience grows in its understanding of what it would take to bear the burden of passing on the message to posterity. The Prophet’s mission in its most fundamental analysis was to interpret and To

Indian PM rebukes Canada on Sikh independence as vote held in Surrey
that supporters call Khalistan.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed “strong concerns” over Canada’s handling of the Punjabi independence movement among the overseas diaspora, on the same day thousands in Metro Vancouver’s Sikh community gathered to vote on the matter. A statement released by India’s Ministry of External Affairs said Modi told Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the sidelines of this weekend’s G20 summit in New Delhi that progress in the two countries’ relationship required “mutual respect and trust.”
“India-Canada relations are anchored in shared democratic values, respect for rule of law and strong people-to-people ties,” the Indian government statement said. “(Modi) conveyed our strong concerns about continuing anti-India activities of extremist elements in Canada.” The statement described the Sikh movement as “promoting secessionism and inciting violence” against Indian diplomats. It called on Canada to work with India on what New Delhi said is a threat to the Canadian Indian diaspora. The meeting between Modi and Trudeau coincided with voting in B.C. on a non-bind-
ing referendum for a Sikh homeland that supporters call Khalistan.
Large crowds of voters lined up to vote at Surrey’s Guru Nanak Gurdwara on Sunday, after the Surrey school district cancelled organizers’ original plans to rent a local high school for the vote, which is part of an international campaign.
Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, general counsel for the referendum’s organizers, said Monday the attendance numbers were so large that “thousands” weren’t able to vote, and a second phase of voting is now scheduled for Oct. 29. Source: vancouversun.com
Canada’s allies aren’t keen to take sides in confrontation with India over Sikh activist’s death
The dispute comes just as Western nations are trying to woo the Modi government, with some success.
Canada’s Five Eyes allies showed little inclination Tuesday to wade into an escalating row between Ottawa and New Delhi over allegations that Indian agents were involved in the assassination of Canadian citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, B.C. on June 18. Most opted to treat the allegation as a mat-
ter still to be investigated — in spite of the fact that the Trudeau government feels it has enough information to make an accusation in Parliament and expel a diplomat. U.S. National Security Council spokesperson Adm. John Kirby was perhaps the most supportive of Canada. ”They are certainly serious allegations,” he said Tuesday, “and we believe in order to determine how credible they are, there needs to be a thorough investigation.
“Prime Minister Trudeau has called for that, and so we’ll see how Canada moves forward on this. It’s certainly well within their capacity to do this, and we urge India as well to participate and cooperate in that investigation.” “It is important to find out exactly what happened.” Australian PM Anthony Albanese, who earlier this year hosted India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Australia, refused to comment on the matter at all. Canada has expelled a ‘top’ Indian diplomat. Who is Pavan Kumar Rai?
Canada expelled a “top Indian diplomat” Monday after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau dropped a major allegation that agents of the Indian government were tied to the June murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia. The diplomat in question is Pavan Ku-
mar Rai, according to the office of Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly. He was posted to the Indian High Commission in Ottawa, and Joly had told reporters in Ottawa on Monday that the expulsion was “as a consequence” of the intelligence. Source: globalnews.ca/
India expels Canadian diplomat, escalating tensions after Trudeau accuses India in Sikh’s killing
NEW DELHI (AP) — India expelled one of Canada’s top diplomats Tuesday, ramping up a confrontation between the two countries over Canadian accusations that India may have been involved in the killing of a Sikh separatist leader in suburban Vancouver. India, which has dismissed the accusations as absurd, said the expulsion came amid “grow-
ing concern at the interference of Canadian diplomats in our internal matters and their involvement in anti-India activities,” according to a statement from its Ministry of External Affairs. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appeared to try to calm the diplomatic clash Tuesday, telling reporters that Canada is “not looking to provoke or escalate.”“We are
simply laying out the facts as we understand them and we want to work with the government of India to lay everything clear and to ensure there are proper processes,” he said. “India and the government of India needs to take this matter with the utmost seriousness.”..Source:apnews.com/
Mayor’s Statement: Allegations against Government of India
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has made public statements today that national security agencies are investigating “credible allegations” that “agents of the Government of India” were involved in the killing of prominent Canadian Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey this
past June. There is an ongoing investigation currently being conducted and I will monitor this very serious incident that has impacted our city and our country. I am confident that law enforcement agencies will ensure that the integrity of Canadian democracy and the safety of our citi-

fter the natural disasters, the recent heavy flood in Libya, and the 6.8 magnitude earthquake in Morocco, in which more than twentyfive thousand people have died thousands have been injured, and massive damage to infrastructures has been reported in the past few days. Controlling natural disasters is a complex challenge because many of them are a result of natural processes beyond human control. However, there are ways to mitigate their impact and better prepare for them. Here are some strategies and approaches:
Early Warning Systems: Develop and improve early warning systems for various natural disasters, including earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and wildfires. These systems can provide people with crucial information and time to evacuate or take protective
measures.
Land Use Planning: Implement effective land use planning and zoning regulations that restrict building in high-risk areas prone to natural disasters, such as floodplains, earthquake fault zones, and wildfire-prone areas.
Building Codes and Infrastructure: Enforce and update building codes and infrastructure standards to ensure that structures can withstand the forces of natural disasters. This includes earthquakeresistant buildings, hurricane-resistant windows, and flood-resistant foundations.
mental changes?Disaster Preparedness: Promote disaster preparedness at the individual, community, and government levels. Encourage people to have emergency kits, evacuation plans, and communication strategies in place.
Reforestation and Erosion Control: Implement reforestation and erosion control measures to reduce the risk of landslides and flooding in vulnerable areas. Healthy forests and vegetation can help stabilize soil and absorb excess water.
Flood Control Infrastructure: Invest in flood control infrastructure such as levees, dams, and stormwater management systems to reduce
the impact of floods and prevent water damage.
Climate Change Mitigation: Address the root causes of some natural disasters by mitigating climate change. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions can help slow the frequency and intensity of events like hurricanes and wildfires.
International Cooperation: Collaborate internationally to respond to transboundary natural disasters, such as tsunamis or pandemic diseases. Sharing resources, information, and expertise can enhance disaster response efforts.
Education and Awareness: Raise awareness about natural disasters and their risks through education and public outreach programs. Informed communities are more likely to take preventive measures.
Research and Monitoring: Invest in research and monitoring systems to better understand the causes and patterns of natural disasters. This can help improve prediction and response strategies.
Disaster Recovery and Resilience: Develop plans for disaster recovery and long-term resil-
ience. Communities should be prepared to rebuild in a way that reduces future vulnerability to similar events.
Insurance and Risk Management: Encourage individuals and businesses to have adequate insurance coverage for natural disasters. Proper risk management can help with recovery efforts.
Volunteer and Community Engagement: Foster a culture of volunteerism and community engagement in disaster response and recovery efforts. Local volunteers often play a crucial role in immediate relief efforts.
Government Policies and Funding:
Governments should enact policies that prioritize disaster preparedness and allocate sufficient funding for emergency response and recovery efforts.
It’s important to recognize that while we can take measures to reduce the impact of natural disasters, we cannot entirely control or prevent them. Therefore, a comprehensive and proactive approach that combines prevention, preparedness, and response is essential for minimizing the damage and saving lives when natural disasters occur.

On Monday, tensions skyrocketed when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced officials were probing “credible allegations of a potential link” between Indian government agents and the June killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India’s foreign ministry did
not directly reference Trudeau’s remarks in its advisory on Wednesday. Instead, it said in a statement that New Delhi was concerned for the safety of its citizens in Canada due to “politically condoned hate crimes and criminal violence”.

How can world leaders control global climate change??
Grocery prices increased at 6.9 per cent annual pace.
Canada’s inflation rate jumped higher last month, to an annual pace of four per cent, mostly because of an increase in gasoline prices. Statistics Canada reported Tuesday that the inflation rate ticked higher by 0.7 percentage points, in large part because gasoline prices increased on an annual basis for the first time since January.
Pump prices increased by 4.6 per cent in August alone, and are up by 0.8 per cent compared to where they were a year ago.
Energy prices tend to have an outsized impact on the overall inflation rate, because they filter down into everything else, from production costs to transportation of goods. Karleen Jack is feeling the pinch of higher gasoline prices on two fronts — as a small business owner and as a consumer. She runs Lawn Warriors Property Maintenance, a business providing outdoor maintenance such as yard care, leaf and snow removal, in Ajax, Ont., just east of Toronto.
She normally services clients from all over the region, but the high price of gasoline right now has forced her to limit the distance she’s willing to go.
“We’ve had to be creative,” she told CBC News in an interview. “Based on the increases from last year, we had to zone down to a smaller territory.” From gas in her truck to premium fuel for her hedgers, leaf blowers, trimmers and mowers, she feels every pump increase directly. She estimates her costs rose by about 15 per cent last year, but she hasn’t been able to pass those increases on to her customers. Source:cbc.ca/
Turkish President Erdogan Raises Kashmir Issue At UNGA
“Another development that will pave the way for regional peace, stability, and prosperity in South Asia will be the establishment of a just and lasting peace in Kashmir through dialogue and cooperation between India and Pakistan.” Erdogan added, “As Turkiye, we will continue to support the steps to be taken in this direction.”
International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva has urged Pakistan to “collect more taxes from the wealthy and protect the poor people” amidst soaring inflation following the nation’s securing of a last-minute bailout in July.
Pakistan’s year-on-year inflation for the month of August leapt to 27.4pc, contracting household budgets. That same month, exorbitant electricity bills led to a protests across the country. The rattled government had initially promised some relief for the public, but later ruled it out citing Pakistan’s commitments with the IMF.
Speaking to Geo News after meeting caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday, Georgieva said that she believed this was in line with what the people of Pakistan would like to see for the country. “What we are asking in our programme is that please collect more taxes from
the wealthy and please protect the poor people of Pakistan,” she said. “I do believe this is in line with what people in Pakistan would like to see for the country.”
Later in a post on X (formerly Twitter), the IMF chief said she had a good meeting with the Pakistani premier on the country’s economic prospects.“We agreed on the vital need for strong policies to ensure stability, foster sustainable and inclusive growth, prioritise revenue collection, and protection for the most vulnerable in Pakistan,” Georgieva added...Source:Dawn.com

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will give a speech this week in which he is expected to delay some of the government’s policies to reach net zero emissions by 2050, saying the response to the climate change should be more “proportionate.”In a highly unusual late-night statement after reports that he was planning to row back on some of the government’s key green policies, Sunak said
he would set out an “important long-term decision” about the country’s plans to reach net zero. “I am proud that Britain is leading the world on climate change. We are committed to Net Zero by 2050 and the agreements we have made internationally – but doing so in a better, more proportionate way,” he said in the statement. “I’ll be giving a speech this week to set out an important long-term decision we need to make so our country becomes the place I know we all want it to be for our children.”
With a general election looming next year, Sunak sees scaling back some green policies as a way to win over swing voters “ahead of a general election expected next year.” It would be a striking reversal for Britain which until recently was a self-proclaimed leader in climate policy.

WASHINGTON - Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said in a rare interview with Fox News on Wednesday that negotiations over Israel means the prospects of normalized relations between both countries “get closer” every day, but that treatment of Palestinians remains a “very important” issue to be resolved. Saudi Arabia is discussing
a major agreement with the United States to normalize relations with Israel in exchange for a U.S. defense pact and aid in developing its own civilian nuclear program. The Saudis have said any deal would require major progress toward the creation of a Palestinian state, which is a hard sell for the most religious and nationalist government in Israel’s history. For us, the Palestinian issue is very important. Tehran, Iran – Iran’s parliament has passed a new “hijab and chastity” bill that lays out punishment for people, especially women, who violate the country’s mandatory dress code rules. On Wednesday, lawmakers approved the three-year duration of the legislation on a trial basis, with 152 voting in favour, 34 against, and seven abstaining. The Guardian Council, a powerful oversight body consisting of clerics and legal experts, would need to approve the bill before it can be implemented. The implementation of the legislation, which had been in the works for months, was not put to a parliament vote. It was approved last month by a special com-
mittee consisting of 10 lawmakers.
At the time, lawmakers invoked an article of the constitution that permits the formation of a committee to approve legislation for “experimental” implementation. Wednesday’s vote in parliament only decided the duration. Source:aljazeera.com/
The United Nations’ secretary-general issued another stark warning to world leaders on Wednesday, telling them “humanity has opened the gates of hell” and action must be taken in the wake of accelerating extreme weather.
Antonio Guterres delivered the comments on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, as politicians along with activists, business and civil society leaders met for a climate summit.
“Our focus here is on climate solutions and our task is urgent,” he said in his opening comments to the summit. “Climate action is dwarfed by the scale of the challenge. If nothing changes, we are heading towards a 2.8 degree temperature rise, towards a dangerous and unstable world.”
Guterres spoke about what he called “horrendous heat” having impacts on the world, ranging from farmers seeing their crops washed away by flooding, diseases being spawned by sweltering temperatures, and thousands fleeing historic fires...Source: somalitimes.co.uk

The quake, which has killed thousands, was unusually large for Morocco and struck a region where most buildings are not earthquake-resilient.
By: Michael Marshall
Morocco is dealing with the aftermath of its most devastating earthquake for decades. The tremor, which hit on 8 September in the High Atlas mountain range, around 70 kilometres southwest of Marrakesh, has killed more than 2,800 people, with thousands more injured. The death toll seems likely to rise as rescue and recovery efforts continue. Why was the quake so deadly?
Multiple factors have contributed, according to seismologists and disaster risk-reduction specialists.
The first was magnitude. At 6.8, the earthquake was not huge — the one that devastated parts of Turkey and Syria in February, for
Why was the Morocco earthquake so deadly?
example, was magnitude 7.8. But it was unusually large for Morocco. “It’s exceptional for the region,” says Rémy Bossu, secretary-general of the EuroMediterranean Seismological Centre in Bruyères le Châtel, France.
Northern Africa is moderately seismically active. Tremors are caused by the ongoing collision of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates. “The collision explains the seismicity from Turkey to Gibraltar,” says Bossu.
Both are continental plates, adds Ziggy Lubkowski, associate director of seismic design at the engineering consultancy Arup in London. The collision has forced rock upwards, creating the Atlas Mountains in the region where Friday’s quake happened. “It’s a rather complex, old collision.”
Maximum magnitude unknown
Because the region is only moderately active, really big earthquakes are rare, happening only once every few hundred years. Unfortunately, seismological records do not go back far enough to say how big earthquakes in this region can get, says Bossu.
“It is challenging to evaluate the maximum
magnitude, especially in moderate-seismicity environments, because our observations are far too short.”
A further complication is the nature of the plate boundary. In some regions, such as Turkey, there is a single clear boundary. But in northern Africa there is “a network of faults in a much larger area”, says Bossu. Instead of a localized region with a high risk of tremors, a large area has a low but still significant risk...
Lack of preparation
Before the quake on 8 September, there was reason to believe Morocco could experience strong earthquakes. Kelman highlights a 2007 study that counted 1,739 major earthquakes — defined as greater than magnitude 3 and not including aftershocks — whose effects were felt in the country between 1045 and 2005, based mostly on historical descriptions1.
And yet most buildings in the affected area were built of masonry and ‘aggregate’ — particulate matter such as gravel or sand — which is prone to collapse, says Kelman. Strengthening buildings with stronger materials such as reinforced concrete can help, but such measures might not have been practical for the area, which has high levels
of poverty, he says.
Buildings in Morocco are often designed to control for extremes of temperature, which are an ever-present risk, whereas earthquake resilience has taken a back seat, in part because they are rarer, says Kelman. However, in some other regions traditional building materials such as masonry or adobe have been successfully adapted to be earthquakeresilient. “We know we can do it,” he says. When attempting to make buildings more resilient to earthquakes, the most important thing is to talk to local people, says Kelman. “They know their architecture, they know what works for their needs,” he says. Kelman says it is also crucial to think about earthquake resilience as part of sustainable development. People are often advised to have a ‘go bag’ that contains essentials like bottled water, non-perishable food, medicines and a means of communication — but they need to have enough money to be able to afford to maintain it.
As a result, he says, building earthquake resilience means tackling broader societal problems such as poverty and lack of education. “All aspects of disasters are political,” says Kelman. “All disaster risk reduction is about development.” Source: nature.com
Why did Derna’s dams break when Storm Daniel hit Libya?
Experts estimate that 30 million cubic metres of water were released into Derna after the dams broke. There is widespread destruction across Libya’s east after Storm Daniel led to heavy flooding. But the collapse of two dams in Derna, which gave out under pressure they could not handle, was the worst of it. The dams caving under the pressure of water gathering behind them during the storm led to thousands of deaths in the port city alone. So, why did the dams break, what happened to Derna, and what comes next?
Why did the dams break?
There were two major dams upstream from Derna that, for one, had not been maintained since 2002, according to Ahmed Madroud, the beleaguered city’s deputy mayor.
On the other hand, he told Al Jazeera, the dams were not very large, with the first dam only 70 metres (230 feet) tall. Once one dam collapsed, the second one was facing a losing battle. Not only did it have to deal with
heavy rains that were still pouring down in the storm, but it was also hit with a raging wall of water released with force from behind the other dam.
The multiplied force of the water was only strengthened due to the elevation difference between the first and second dams, and the stream took the second dam down on its way to Derna and ultimately, the sea.
Coming down the river, the water travelled approximately 12km (seven miles) from the top of the first dam before it reached the sea. Experts estimate that 30 million cubic metres of water were released when the dams broke, equivalent to 12,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
What happened to Derna?
Derna, a city of roughly 100,000 people, was left completely defenceless after the dams broke. Hichem Chkiouat, minister of civil aviation and member of the emergency committee of the eastern administration of
Libya, said one-quarter of Derna was completely wiped out.
“I returned from Derna. It is very disastrous.
Bodies are lying everywhere – in the sea, in the valleys, under the buildings. I am not exaggerating when I say 25 percent of the city has disappeared,” he told Reuters.
Madroud, the city’s deputy mayor, said on Tuesday that at least 3,000 people were dead in Derna alone, and bodies were still being pulled out of the water in large numbers, with fatalities likely approaching 5,000. On Wednesday, the death toll was updated to
6,000 across eastern Libya. Some of the bodies may have been washed out to sea along with the homes that were swept away by the flash floods. Entire neighbourhoods have now disappeared, according to witness testimonies and footage of the area. Even multistorey apartment buildings that were not in the immediate vicinity of the river were significantly damaged and at least partially caved in due to the force of the water that broke the dams.

David Eby breaks ground on second Surrey hospital that falcon cancelled
SURREY- BC NDP Premier David Eby broke ground on a second Surrey Hospital today, a project that BCU Party Leader Kevin Falcon said was “surplus” as he sold off the property that was designated for it.
In 2012 as Minister of Finance, Falcon used his budget speech to announce the sale of the hospital land, claiming a second hospital wouldn’t be necessary after renovations to Surrey Memorial. “With the almost $600-million expansion of Surrey Memo-
rial Hospital now underway at its current location, the land is surplus. So, rather than letting it sit there costing taxpayers money, we intend to sell it and let the private sector use it.” Video of Falcon’s comments is available here. “Only Kevin Falcon thought Surrey wouldn’t need another hospital as we grew rapidly,” said BC NDP MLA Mike Starchuk. “His choice to cancel the hospital has directly contributed to the healthcare challenges in Surrey today.”
City of Surrey breaks ground on new Strawberry hill Community hall
Surrey, B.C. – Construction has begun on the new Strawberry Hill Community Hall following a small groundbreaking event held on the site today on the perimeter of R.A. Nicholson Park in the Strawberry Hill neighbourhood of west Newton. “I am thrilled to be breaking ground for the Strawberry Hill Community Hall,” said Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke. “Losing this building was disappointing to so many people. While we can never get the original back, I’m pleased we can offer a new space to the Newton community to enjoy for decades to
come. I look forward to celebrated welcoming residents into the new Hall when it opens next spring.” In 2021, a fire destroyed the historic Strawberry Hill Hall that was currently under construction as part of a $1.2M rehabilitation project that would have seen areas built for childcare and community rentals.
Built in 1909, it was among the oldest community halls in Surrey.
The construction contract was awarded to Jacob Bros Construction Inc. with funding confirmed through the City’s five-year capital budget and over $425,000 in grant
support through Province of B.C.’s ChildCare BC New Spaces Fund.
The provincial funding provides funds to create new licensed quality, inclusive, community based affordable childcare programs. The grant will be used to support 18 child-aged before and after school care spaces, as well as 18 spaces for children aged three to kindergarten. In addition to childcare program, the facility will be used for community rental opportunities and include cultural programming on a regular basis.
“We know, with Surrey’s continued
Unlike Falcon, David Eby and the BC NDP have chosen to build both a new Surrey Hospital and a much-needed expansion at Surrey Memorial. “We don’t believe the people of Surrey should have to choose between a new hospital and expanding Surrey Memorial,” said Starchuk. “Our community deserves both, and David Eby and our team are committed to getting it done.”

growth, the demand for child care will continue to grow as well,” said Grace Lore, Minister of State for Child Care. “While it’s never easy losing a historic landmark like the Strawberry Hill Hall, I’m glad we can partner with the City of Surrey as part of the rebuild to deliver much-needed services like access
to affordable, quality, inclusive child care that families can rely on.”
The project is anticipated to be completed in the spring of 2024.

Brawl breaks out amid duelling Vancouver protests over LGBTQ2S+ education
Violence erupted between opponents and supporters of LGBTQ2S+ education during a pair of duelling protests held in downtown Vancouver on Wednesday.
At least one person was taken away in handcuffs following a brawl outside the Vancouver Art Gallery, where protesters against the teaching of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) in schools clashed with a vastly larger group of counter-protesters expressing support for transgender youths and their families.
Video captured by CTV News suggests the first punch was thrown at a counter-protester dressed head-to-toe in black, which prompted others to join the fight. Police eventually stepped in and escorted away one man, dressed in a plaid shirt, who shouted anti-gay slurs at the crowd. It’s unclear whether anyone else was arrested. CTV News has reached out to the Vancouver Police Department for more information. Similar demonstrations were held outside legislatures, city halls and school boards
across Canada Wednesday, with the antiSOGI protests organized by a group called 1 Million March 4 Children.
“My kids don’t go to school to learn this. They go to school to learn mathematics, languages, they don’t go to school to learn about SOGI,” said one woman who identified herself to CTV News as Masa.
The organizers’ website advocates for the end of “(SOGI) curriculum, pronouns, gender ideology and mixed bathrooms in schools,” describing their efforts as an attempt to “protect our children from indoctrination and sexualization.”

BC United leader under fire for saying protesters have ‘legitimate concerns’ ahead of anti-LGBTQ2S+ demonstrations
The leader of B.C.’s official Opposition faced calls to condemn rallies against LGBTQ2S+ education happening across Canada Wednesday after suggesting the protesters have “legitimate concerns.”
In advance of Wednesday’s demonstrations, statements condemning them were issued by everyone from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to city mayors to grassroots parents’ organizations.
BC United Leader Kevin Falcon’s first comments on the planned protests came Tuesday when he was asked about his party’s response at an unrelated news conference.
“I think when it comes to a point where parents are feeling a need to protest in the streets, that’s telling you something. It’s telling you that they feel excluded and ignored in what’s going on in their schools,” he answered. ”I think it’s important that we don’t just dismiss that outright, that we recognize that there are legitimate concerns.”
The marches advocate for “the elimination of the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) curriculum, pronouns, gender ideology and mixed bathrooms in schools,” according to organizers of the so-called “1MillionMarch4Children,” who describe themselves as marching “to protect our children from indoctrination and sexuali-
zation.” In response to Falcon’s comments, B.C.’s parliamentary secretary for gender equity issued a public demand for the Opposition leader to denounce the planned events and affirm his support for the province’s SOGI123 framework, a set of guidelines and best practices for creating inclusive classrooms. That framework was introduced when Falcon’s party was in power in 2016.

At least three people were arrested Wednesday as protesters and counter-protesters gathered in Nanaimo and Victoria to argue about the way schools teach sexuality and gender identity, and how teachers refer to transgender students.
A man with a bullhorn, who had been declaring his opposition to children deciding their own gender identities, was chased down and tackled by Nanaimo RCMP officers after getting into a physical altercation outside of Nanaimo’s city hall.

Protesters accused schools of exposing young students to “gender ideology,” and said parents have the right to know whether their children are questioning their gender identity. Counter-demonstrators, meanwhile, accused protesters of importing United States culture wars into the country
and trying to deny students important lessons about inclusion and respect for genderdiverse people.
“Trans people -- they exist in society, and they deserve inclusion, just like everyone else,” said activist Celeste Trianon, who helped lead a counter-protest in downtown Montreal, where police inserted themselves between the two factions outside the offices of Premier Francois Legault. ”We need to talk to people, teach them the right vocabulary, the proper words, at an age-appropriate time, in order to explain that inclusion is a good thing. We need to make sure that their trans and queer peers at school feel welcome.” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted about the Canada-wide protests,
saying “Transphobia, homophobia, and biphobia have no place in this country. We strongly condemn this hate and its manifestations, and we stand united in support of 2SLGBTQI+ Canadians across the country -- you are valid and you are valued.” Organizers of the marches said they were protesting the “premature sexualization and potentially harmful indoctrination” of children, but that they aren’t against LGBTQ+ people. The crowd that gathered in Ottawa suggested otherwise, with some signs held by protesters directly targeting members in that community
as being groomers and pedophiles. Others shouted that being LGBTQ+ is a sin, that children shouldn’t be learning about those identities in schools, and that the “evilness” of the LGBTQ+ community will soon be eradicated...Source:ctvnews.ca/

Voices of Muslim Women invites Women to Shape BC’s Anti-Racism Legislation
By: Vipra Ravindran
The Voices of Muslim Women Foundation hosted an event in partnership with the Province of British Columbia where women of color were invited to determine issues and discuss ideas to shape the Anti-Racism Legislation. This event was held on September 16, 2023, at Simon Fraser University, downtown Vancouver. The province is expanding the antiracism legislation in an attempt to build on the existing Anti- Racism Data Act (ARDA). The B.C. government proposed to collaborate with minority, racialized communities to create and host discussion panels in groups across the province.
The event started off with an icebreaker followed by a presentation by Aaminah Khan who delivered the presentation where she discussed key topics around racism, including diversity, inclusion, intersectionality, and multiculturalism. The facilitator created a safe space for attendees to share their thoughts and experiences. The presentation also included interactive questions along with a link for attendees to record their responses anonymously. The main goal of this event was to learn how racism can be prevented and how the government of B.C. can help communities through the Anti-Racism Legislation. One of the discussions highlighted the need to implement strict
laws against hate speech and racial slurs throughout the province. “When there are consequences, people will think twice before opening their mouths,”said one of the attendees. Having representatives from racialized and Indigenous communities in policy making bodies was also mentioned.
Ms. Khan emphasized the different between being a non-racist vs the need to be an active anti-racist
through understanding and targeting route causes of systemic discrimination. At the end, she encouraged everyone to have conversations in their communities and with the government in order to see any changes, noting, “All Anti-Racist societies are multicultural, but not all multicultural societies are Anti-racist.”
