Is Muslim Ummah waiting for another Sultan Salahuddin Ayyubi ?
The great champion of human rights By Abdullah Samdani
Introduction
T
he screams and cries of the innocent Muslims who were massacred in Jerusalem 88 years ago were still present in the minds of the Sultan. The horrific stories of horses swimming in Muslim blood in the streets of Jeru-
salem were igniting the fire of revenge in the hearts of an army standing at the doors of Jerusalem. This army was none other than the army of Sultan Salahuddin Ayyubi which was on the verge of taking back the holy city of Abrahamic faiths. The terrified Christian population was only waiting for their end because they also had a clear picture of what they did to Muslims 88 years ago in their minds. But as the army of Sultan Salahuddin entered Jerusalem, something unexpected happened which was not even imaginable in the 12th century. After entering the city, Sultan Salahuddin Ayyubi portrayed the true image of Islam to the world and setting an example of tolerance, humanity and justice which made even his enemies, his admirers. On the occasion of Human Rights Day, I will briefly examine the events which took place after the siege of Jerusalem in 1187 and how these events made Sultan Salahuddin Ayyubi a champion of Human Rights in an era where there was no concept of Humanitarian
A bad dream will not necessarily come true
Question 106418:
A senior person sees a bad dream about 3 young people of his/her family; He/she narrates it unfortunately. Two of those young people suffer severely in their marital life. The third is going to get married now. What should he/she do to avoid any ‘shar’.
A
Answer:
dream, nor that the third of them will be affected by it. In any case, a Muslim should ask Allaah for well-being in this worldly life and in the Hereafter. Supplication is part of the predetermination, and Allaah may repel with it much affliction. The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “There is nothing that repels predetermination except supplication.” [Ahmad, At-Tirmithi and Ibn Maajah] The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, used to supplicate as follows: “O Allaah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in this life and the next. O Allaah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religious and worldly affairs, and my family and my wealth. O Allaah, cover my faults and settle my fears. O Allaah, protect me from the front and from behind and on my right and on my left and from above, and I seek refuge in Your Greatness from catastrophe below me.” [Ahmad and Ibn Maajah]Allaah Knows best.
ll perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.Part of the proper conduct concerning seeing a bad dream is that whoever sees it should conceal it and not relate it to others. So this brother was wrong for telling his dream to the people. Sultan Salahuddin Ayyubi
Sultan Salahuddin Ayyubi or Saladin (according to Western World) was born in 1137 in the city of Tikrit (modern day Iraq). He is regarded as a true Muslim hero who conquered the city of Jerusalem from Christians. He is not only remembered for his gallantry, heroism and brilliance as a soldier, statesman and military leader but also for his tolerance, mercy and justice. He was the founder of the Ayyubid dynasty. He was the first ruler in the Islamic world to be called as the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques. Many of the scholars describe him as the de facto Caliph of Islam. At the height of his power, his empire included Egypt, Syria, Upper Mesopotamia, the Hejaz, Yemen and other parts of North Africa.
Saving Lives of Thousands by Accepting the Surrender of Jerusalem
After giving a humiliating defeat to the Christian armies in the Battle of Hattin, the strong and large army of Sultan Salahuddin laid siege of Jerusalem. It was quite clear that the Muslim army will soon overrun the city. Seeing the situation of getting out of control, leader of the defense of Jerusalem, Balian met Sultan Salahuddin with an envoy. While negotiating, Balian threatened the Sultan that if his unconditional surrender demands are not met, then he will kill the entire Muslim population of 5000 in the city and will destroy the Islamic relics and structures there. By this Balian made it clear that he was not at all concerned about the fate of Christians which were present in the city because it was only a matter of days until the Sultan’s army would have entered the entire city. On the other hand, Sultan Salahuddin was a true follower of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and wanted to avoid as much causalities as possible. He was a genius of war and peace and instead of showing his rage, he showed mercy and after some discussion an agreement was made that the Christians would pay a very small amount and can leave the city. This act of mercy not only saved the lives of 5000 Muslims but also the entire Christian population in the city from the rage of Muslim army who would have soon overtaken it.
Accepting Peaceful Surrender
of Jerusalem
The atrocities against the Muslims after the first crusade were still alive in the minds of people. Even the Christian historian described the First crusaders as mass murderers. According to Tyreman in his book ‘God’s War: A New History of Cursades’ he has described the slaughter of Muslim of Jerusalem as “a juxtaposition of extreme violence and anguished faith”. Other historians have cited examples of horses swimming in the blood of Muslim population. Tyerman has further said that “The slaughter continued for days; Muslims were indiscriminately killed, and Jews who had taken refuge in their synagogue died when it was burnt down by the Crusaders.” All these events took place just 88 years ago and the entire Christian population was very much frightened whether Sultan Salahuddin would keep his promise or not. Sultan Salahuddin Ayyubi was a true Muslim and a man of his words and, therefore, he kept his promise. No one was harmed at the time of surrender and the entire surrender of Jerusalem occurred peacefully.
Paying the Ransom of Enemy Soldiers
As per the agreement of surrender the Christian army had to pay a sum of 30,000 dinar to the Sultan as ransom. The elite army paid this amount and left the city. But most of the poor soldiers were not in a position to pay the ransom. They were left with no hope and their families came to meet the Sultan for his mercy. According to Malcolm Cameron Lyons in his book ‘Saladin: The Politics of the Holy War’ he has said that Sultan Salahuddin himself paid the ransom amount of hundreds of Christians and provided them an opportunity to leave the city. Muslim historians cite a much bigger number and are of the view that Sultan paid ransom of thousands of soldiers.
Freeing of Prisoners of War
After seeing the generosity of the Sultan towards thousands of Christian soldiers, his brother Al Adil also freed 1000 Christians who were on the verge of becoming his slaves. Christian leaders like Heraclius and Balian also asked for Sultan’s mercy and the merciful Sultan freed 1200 more people without any ransom. 1000 more captives were freed on the request of Muzaffar al-Din

City of Surrey: 2023 Major Accomplishments

their efforts in meeting and, in many instanc• es, exceeding Council’s ambitious agenda.”
Highlights of major accomplishments include: •
Surrey, BC – At last night’s Regular Council meeting, Surrey City Council received a report outlining the major accomplishments achieved in 2023 to date. Under the direction and leadership of Council, the City of Surrey has moved ahead on major projects to improve livability, enhance public safety, deliver new infrastructure that will prepare the City for future growth.
“In the 12 months since this new City Council was sworn in, we have made significant progress in improving the quality of life in Surrey,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “From building new infrastructure to enhancing public safety, Council has worked hard to improve the livability of our growing city. I am proud of what we have been able to accomplish in our first year and I thank staff for
Doug McCallum today issued a critical statement regarding Mayor Brenda Locke’s performance, asserting that she has achieved little for the residents of Surrey. McCallum accuses Mayor Locke of taking credit for initiatives that were set in motion by the Safe Surrey Coalition, such as the 80th Ave road improvements, the widening of 32nd Ave, and Cloverdale Arena ice rinks. “During our term, significant projects like the 80th Ave and 32nd Ave improvements, and the Cloverdale Arena ice rinks, were initiated,” McCallum stated. “It’s disheartening to see Mayor Locke claim these achieve-
ments as her own when in fact she voted against them as a Councillor.” McCallum also criticized Locke for voting against the City Budgets that funded these projects when she was a councillor. He highlights her “major achievements” in her first year as mayor, marked by a 400% tax increase from 2.5% to 12.5%, wasting $100M equivalent to $266,000 taxpayer dollars per day opposing the Surrey police transition, cancellation of Preliminary Layout Approvals (PLAs) for approved housing projects, and denying more than 2000 housing unit applications during a housing crisis.
$100 million in transportation projects such as: • 80th Ave improvements in Newton • 32nd Ave widening from 184 St. to 188 St. • Third ice sheet added to Cloverdale Arena • In partnership with TransLink, the addition of Bus Rapid Transit from City Centre to South Surrey • Streamlining permitting and inspections with addition of new online options • New funding for additional 25 RCMP officers, 20 Fire Services personnel, and
•
10 Bylaw officers Re-establishment of Public Safety Committee dissolved by previous City Council Adoption of City’s Climate Change Action Strategy 370 new childcare spaces through securement of Federal and Provincial funding
The City of Surrey was also recognized internationally and nationally for 15 awards in 2023 including:
•
UBCM Community Excellence Award for the anti-gang SAFE Program • NAFA National lean Air Award for the Surrey Operations Center • Excellence in Economic Development Gold Award from the International Economic Development Council for the City’s Supply Chain Resiliency Program By: Media enquiries: Amy Jugpal
McCallum Blasts Mayor Locke for ‘Zero Achievement’, Claims She Wrongfully Takes Credit for Surrey’s Progress “The Safe Surrey Coalition’s administration marked a period of significant progress, now being undone,” McCallum added. “Surrey’s residents deserve leadership that builds upon, not undermines, our past achievements.” He further pointed out the inaction regarding the Newton Recreation Centre, a project initiated under his leadership with a $100M site acquisition. “It has been 14 months with no progress on this vital community centre. Mayor Locke and her council are blatantly ignoring Newton’s needs, year in office as an F-, signaling a significant playing politics at the expense of our com- departure from the city’s previously progresmunity.” McCallum rates Mayor Locke’s first sive direction. Falcon’s BCUP continues to oppose the Speculation and Vacancy Tax
While David Eby takes on wealthy investors by expanding the speculation and vacancy tax, BCU Party MLA Renee Merrifield is doubling down on the party’s opposition to the tax. “This is a ridiculous tax that does absolutely nothing to increase the supply of housing,” Merrifield wrote on Twitter immediately after the announcement. In fact, the speculation and vacancy tax has put 20,000 more homes on the market in Metro Vancouver alone. Kevin Falcon’s plan to cancel it would rip thousands of units off the market and back into the hands of speculators.
Here are 14 other times Kevin Falcon has come out against the speculation and vacancy tax: “Why on earth is government hammering non-speculating taxpaying Canadians, who are often an important part of our tourism and seasonal economies?” (Daily Hive, March 26 2018). “This NDP provision does little to reduce the impact this tax will have on British Columbians who own recreational, seasonal, and secondary properties.” (Daily Hive, March 26 2018) “So when you’re someone from Toronto, a professor in Toronto, that buys a condominium in Vancouver, visits it in the summer and is looking to retire here and is very excited about that prospect, now we’re saying oh, OK, well, since you’re doing that we’re now going to punish you for making that investment.” (CBC Early Edition, May 8 2018) “Mis-named speculation taxes that primarily target B.C. residents
while ignoring speculators only add to the problem.” (Vancouver Sun, July 2 2020) “All they did [with the speculation tax] was add more costs to housing and instead of prices going down, actually prices have continued to go up.” (Vancouver Sun, May 17 2021) “I’ve been pointing out that the blizzard of taxes that they’ve introduced since 2017 have done nothing but restrict supply and add costs for home buyers: They’ve introduced a speculation tax that has nothing to do with speculation.” (Falcon Leadership fundraising email, July 29 2021) “They layered on all this new blizzard of taxes onto housing, the speculation tax, the vacancy tax, the increased foreign buyers tax and on and on it went.... If you add more cost to housing, you just increased the cost of housing. And this is the fundamental departure for us and them.”
(BC Liberal Debate, Dec 14 2021) “If you’re going to introduce a whole blizzard of new taxes on housing, as the NDP did in 2018, and believe that that is going to bring about housing affordability, you are seriously misunderstanding and misreading fundamental economics….The speculation, tax, the vacancy tax, all the new taxes on vacant land; all of these are costs that get passed along ultimately to the buyer.” (CBC Early Edition, Feb 7 2022) “So the speculation tax actually refers to people that own second properties. So, lots of British Columbians will own a cabin at the lake or maybe a second investment condo or something like that. And two thirds of that so-called speculation tax are being paid by British Columbians.” (Connect FM, Feb 24 2022) “What this speculation tax is, is a tax on people that own second homes, and that might even be a cottage or a cabin that you’ve got on
a lake somewhere. It’s mostly paid for by British Columbians. It’s people that own their second property.” (Punjabi Press Club, March 15 2022) “These are people that have a second property and they’re being forced to pay, you know, an additional cost. So once again, the NDP, they’ve named it something that sounds good, a speculation tax, but it is not dealing with speculation. So I think the first thing we have to do is look at all of the taxes that are imposed on housing.” (Darpan, April 11 2022) “I think the challenge with [the speculation and vacancy tax] is that most of it is being paid by British Columbians.” (The Tyee, July 1 2022) “It has nothing to do with speculation… I don’t want people to be confused and think it has to deal with speculators because it deals with very few speculators.” (CBC All Points West, February 28 2023) By: Media contact: Caelen Cook
Surrey’s King George Corridor chosen for Bus Rapid Transit Surrey, B.C. – The Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation has selected Surrey’s King George Boulevard as one of the first three corridors for Metro Vancouver’s first new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes. BRT is a high-frequency rapid transit service with dedicated bus lanes and rail-like stations. “I am thrilled that TransLink has selected Surrey’s King George Boulevard as one of the region’s first Bus Rapid Transit routes,” said Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke. “Surrey needs faster and more frequent transit now. With high gas prices, a climate emergency, and increasing traffic on the roads, it’s important that Surrey residents have transit options sooner rather than later. The high-
frequency service BRT will provide reliable transit to Newton and South Surrey, which have long been under-served. BRT from City Centre to White Rock will also improve connection to SkyTrain, including the future Surrey Langley SkyTrain extension.” BRT routes will keep customers moving quickly by operating with high frequencies in traffic-separated lanes and signal priority at intersections. They will have high-capacity buses with rail-like stations that provide customers with real-time information, shelter, and convenient boarding. BRT will support residential and commercial growth planned along this corridor to serve 133,000 additional residents and 42,000 new
jobs (based on updated land use plans for City Centre, Newton Town Centre, King George Blvd – South Newton Neighbourhood, and Semiahmoo Town Centre). The City has also recently widened key infrastructure along the corridor, including the Bear Creek Bridge and Nicomekl Bridge. These factors will support quick implementation of a BRT, which will provide immediate benefits of reduced traffic congestion and increased transit ridership on King George once live. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, transit
ridership in Surrey has recovered faster than any other city in Metro Vancouver, exceeding pre-pandemic levels, and increased transit service is required to support continued growth and housing needs in Surrey. By: -Media Enquiries: Amy Jugpal

‘We want permanent ceasefire,’ Palestinians in Gaza say as truce extended
T
he four-day humanitarian pause has quietened the skies over Gaza but has shone a light on the suffering of displaced Palestinians. Deir el-Balah, Gaza Strip – Ayman Harb, a father of three children, stuck it out with his family in the Gaza City neighbourhood of Shujayea for more than a month of the war, even as Israeli bombs and tanks destroyed the besieged enclave’s largest urban centre. Last week, just before a four-day humanitarian pause came into effect, he decided the family had to flee. One of his sons has cerebral palsy and requires an oxygen tank, and the Israeli soldiers threatened to shoot Harb if he did not throw away the oxygen. Now in central Gaza, Harb has but one dream — for the truce to turn into a full-fledged ceasefire that allows him and his family to return home. On Monday evening as the four-day truce was coming to an end, Qatar, which has played a central role in mediating talks that enabled the pause in fighting, announced that the halt in the war had been extended by another two days. For families across Gaza, that brief respite also serves to underscore the suffering and humiliation of the en-
clave’s 2.3 million people, who have been under attack since October 7. Palestinians are calling for a permanent ceasefire, stressing that their priority is to return to their homes even if they were destroyed in the heavy bombardment over the past month and a half. The truce, which began on Friday, has seen the release of Israeli civilian captives held by Hamas in exchange for the release of Palestinian women and children imprisoned by Israel. It has quietened the skies over the Gaza Strip from the incessant sound of Israeli drones and warplanes. But it has done little to ease the collective trauma of the people of Gaza. According to the United Nations, 1.6 million people have been displaced from their homes, many forced to flee to the south of the strip. Some families who have tried to return to the north during the truce have been fired upon by Israeli snipers. Others have been forced to live in what they describe as “shame”. “I’ve been here staying in a tent on the grounds of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital for a week, right next to the ambulances,” 41-year-old Harb said. “We are about 20 people in one tent, but I had to send my wife and my
other two children to stay with a relative after the rain soaked our tent this morning.” “Yes, the bombings have stopped, but we need a truce that will return us to our homes,” he added. “Otherwise, there is no point in one. I’d rather go back to my home and die there than stay here in a tent living in shame and being forced to rely on people for the basic necessities of life.” Harb said his family had to beg before in their lives. Now they are desperate for medicine, food and water. “We don’t want war. We just want to live in our homes with our dignity intact,” his 20-year-old cousin Badr said. Imm Shadi al-Taher, a 63-yearold mother of 10, was displaced from her home in Tall az-Zaatar in Gaza City three weeks ago. She has also been staying with 25 members of her family in one tent on the hospital grounds. “We had our pride and dignity, but look at the state we are in now, this destitution and the fact that no one is looking to help us or is thinking of us,” she said. She acknowledged the “huge relief ” of not hearing the sound of drones, warplanes or artillery shelling, noting that her grandchildren are more relaxed, but she cannot bear to
stay away from her home, which was destroyed. “I’m willing to live in a tent but on the ruins of my home, where I don’t need to ask anyone for help,” she said. “I want to go back to bury my siblings who are still under the rubble of their own destroyed homes.” According to the Gaza media government office, at least 6,800 people are missing and presumed dead under the rubble. This is in addition to the 14,854 Palestinians killed since October 7, the majority of them women and children. For Noor Saadeh, a 23-year-old mother of two who was displaced from her home in Gaza City a month ago, the truce is not enough. “What’s the point of a truce if we cannot go back to our homes?” she asked. “My son keeps telling me he misses his friends at nursery school. We want our old life back.” She is worried about the onset of winter since she and her family fled while it was still warm and have no way to go back to their home. “I had to ask people for appropriate clothes for the children at the very least,” she said. “We didn’t think we would be here for this long.” Courtesy By: By Maram Humaid

whether the minority Liberals can still afford a multibillion-dollar national pharmacare plan, in light of his government’s new vow to keep deficits below one per cent of GDP, Trudeau said they’ve already taken some measures to lower drug costs, but they “will continue to work in responsible ways to move forward.” These questions are being raised now, with less than three weeks left in the House sitting calendar

Israel receives 12 hostages from Hamas, releases 30 Palestinians from prisons amid extended truce News Coninued from Page 1 more hostages held by Hamas and dren, with many more dead feared captivity, keeping the guns quiet
Brigades, the armed wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement, it said on Telegram. The truce has brought Gaza its first respite after seven weeks of intensive Israeli bombardment prompted by the Hamas attack. It had been due to expire overnight into Tuesday but both sides agreed to extend the pause to allow for the release of
of Palestinians held by Israel. According to figures from Hamasrun health authorities in Gaza, which are deemed reliable by the United Nations but do not differentiate between civilians and combatants, more than 15,000 people have been confirmed killed in Israel’s bombardment of the territory, around 40 per cent of them chil-
to be lost under rubble. At least 77 soldiers have been killed in Israel’s ground offensive. Israel says it has killed thousands of militants, without providing evidence. Israel has said the truce could be prolonged further, provided Hamas continues to free at least 10 Israeli hostages per day. But with fewer women and children still in

Short-term rental tax changes left out of Freeland’s bill to implement fiscal update measures, here’s why
Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland will be tabling an omnibus bill to pass measures she promised in last week’s fall economic statement, framing the incoming legislation to advance “the government’s economic plan.” Missing from the package are the government’s promised plans to crack down on short-term rentals, while Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s promise to double the carbon tax rural rebate top-up, is included. On Tuesday, the senior Liberal cabinet minister offered an early preview of what the bill will contain, when she tabled notice of what’s
known as a “ways and means motion,” in the House of Commons. This motion, spanning 527 pages, outlines all of the tax and legislative measures that the government plans to include in the bill – titled the “Fall Economic Statement Implementation Act, 2023—coming on Wednesday(opens in a new tab) if MPs allow. Health minister has said the plan would tackle ballooning waits in the province’s cancer care system. The Opposition B.C. United Party criticized the ruling B.C. NDP Tuesday for its plan to send some cancer patients to the U.S. for radiation treatment. Under the plan, which was first announced in May, up to 50 patients weekly could choose to go to one of two clinics in Bellingham, Wash., about 40 kilometres south of the Canada-U.S. border, for treatment. At the time, Health Minister Adrian Dix said the plan would tackle ballooning waits in the province’s cancer care system, specifically for radiation treatment for breast cancer and prostate cancer patients. Since the scheme began on May 29, 310 patients have gone to the U.S. for radiation treatment, according to statistics released to the B.C. United Party under a Freedom of Information request. The Opposition says
the numbers fall short of the province’s target of 50 patients per week, and the B.C. NDP government isn’t doing enough to ensure high-quality care within the province. “Under this premier’s watch, B.C.’s once worldleading cancer care system has dramatically deteriorated, plummeting to some of the worst wait times in the country,” Opposition Leader Kevin Falcon said in the Legislature Tuesday. “The daily reality for cancer patients is endless waiting, deteriorating health and lives lost because of the tragic failure to provide basic access to cancer care.” Falcon said some patients are choosing to self-fund their treatments in the U.S. as opposed to waiting to get a referral from the B.C. cancer care system. “The premier’s Band-Aid response to the crisis is grossly underdelivering and failing to meet their own targets they set,” he said. According to the data provided to the B.C. United Party, just under 250 patients refused to travel to Bellingham for radiation as they wanted to get treated within Canada. A further 164 patients are listed as having simply “refused U.S. treatment”. Source:montreal.ctvnews.

Pakistan, UAE sign ‘historic’ MoUs worth ‘multi-billion dollars’. The development came in a meeting between caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi during the former’s week-long trip to the Middle East. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said the MoUs in the sectors of energy, port operations, wastewater treatment, food security, logistics, minerals, and banking and financial services will unlock “multi-billion dollars of investment from the UAE
into Pakistan and will help realise various initiatives envisioned under the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC)”. The prime minister termed the signing of MoUs as “a historic event that will usher in a new era of Pak-UAE economic partnership.” During the meeting, PM Kakar expressed profound gratitude for the UAE’s firm support to Pakistan in the economic and financial domain. “The UAE is home to 1.8 million Pakistanis, contributing to the progress, prosperity and economic development of the two brotherly countries,” the PMO said. Regional and global developments were also discussed during the meeting with particular reference to the deteriorating human rights and humanitarian situation in occupied Palestine. The prime minister expressed Pakistan’s support for a just and durable solution to the Palestinian question anchored in international law and in line with relevant United Nations and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation resolutions. Opposition criticizes B.C. government for Confusion within PTI as party denies senior leader’s plan to send cancer patients to U.S. claim that Imran won’t run for party chairmanship The PTI on Tuesday denied its own Senior Vice President Sher Afzal Khan Marwat’s claim that party chief Imran Khan, who is currently incarcerated at Adiala jail, would not contest the upcoming intra-party polls for the slot of party chairman — a position he has long held. The party did not directly name Marwat but it was clear that the clarification through its official social media account was addressing remarks made earlier in the day by Marwat, who had stated that Imran decided to sit out party polls due to legal prohibitions and his disqualification in the Toshakhana case. Marwat had made the remarks while speaking to PTI’s social media representatives outside Adiala jail. “Khan sahib himself has decided that he will not contest the polls for the office of PTI chairman,” he had said, adding that this decision was taken with consensus. Marwat said the decision would be reversed as soon as the disqualification was set aside. However, hours later, the PTI

NDP to campaign on pharmacare if it backs out of Liberal deal: national director
HAMILTON - The federal New Democrats plan to make pharmacare a central issue in the next election if the Liberals do not meet the bar the opposition party has set for legislation to reduce the cost of prescription drugs. The confidence-and-supply deal that sees the NDP supporting the minority Liberals on key votes in the House of Commons says the government will introduce a bill to create a framework for national pharmacare this year. NDP members drew a line in the
sand by passing an emergency resolution at their policy convention in Hamilton this weekend that says the party should withdraw its support if the Liberals do not commit to “a universal, comprehensive and entirely public pharmacare program.” The New Democratic Party’s national director, Anne McGrath, said getting a bill that has teeth will be her party’s biggest priority as parliamentarians return to the House of Commons this week. And that if the NDP ends up walking away from the deal over the issue, she said in an interview on Sunday, then: “Pharmacare will be a ballot-box issue. Absolutely, it will be.” Singh shared a message of hope in his keynote speech to about 1,200 delegates at the party’s policy convention on Saturday, with the NDP testing new language around “rebuilding Canada” as it tries to position itself as a party that can bring change. A Canadian organization is urging the country to stand with survivors and end domestic economic abuse. The Canadian Centre for Women’s Empowerment (CCFWE), a non-profit organization, said the issue needs a “call to action.” Canada This Month newsletter: Sign up to read the best our local outlets have to offer Economic abuse is an “insidious” and “overlooked” form of domestic violence that disproportionately impacts women, immigrants, refugees, Indigenous and gender-diverse people, the press release reads. The press release notes that almost all survivors of gender-based violence endure economic abuse rates ranging from 94 to 99 per cent. “Economic abuse, experienced by almost all survivors of gender-based violence, has far-reaching consequences on victims’ ability to break free from cycles of

Unfortunately, this is the reality for many victims of intimate partner violence.” According to the press release, Minister Ien wants to “shine a light” on the issue. The CCRWE said that a “confluence of factors” has contributed to higher gender-based violence rates. This includes rising inflation, scarcity of affordable housing, food prices and strained assistance programs, the release reads. “We know it disproportionately impacts women, newcomers, Black, Indigenous and gender-diverse people,” Ien said. “Economic Abuse leaves survivors with debt, no financial resources, and is one of the primary reasons that victims return to their abusers.” This comes as Canada marked Economic Abuse Awareness Day on Sunday... Happily, Joe Biden is finished
By: Andrew Mitrovica
Biden’s stubborn support for Israel’s war on Gaza has not only offended but infuriated crucial constituencies.
It will be remembered, I hope, as the hug that sank a craven president. It was mid-October. US President Joe Biden made the requisite pilgrimage to Tel Aviv to show that his staunch support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was not simply rhetorical. His grateful host, fidgety with excitement, waited for Biden to emerge from the bulging hull of Air Force One. Apart from the loud harangues of a throng of nearby journalists, the whir of the White House-in-the-sky’s engines muffled much of the chatter below.
Netanyahu nodded to his companion, President Isaac Herzog, as an army of stoic Israeli and American bodyguards stood by – at the ready. After a minute or so, Biden appeared with his trademark aviator sunglasses in hand. He paused for a moment at the top of the aircraft’s steps to reach out to Netanyahu, like an expectant bride to his groom. Then, looking pale and tired, Biden walked down the aisle – as it were – and towards his beaming beau. The pair embraced, with Biden patting Netanyahu on the back. The delighted prime minister said something. Biden offered a short, perfunctory reply. As hugs between politicians go, this one seemed long
and sincere. Israel’s indispensable patron had arrived in person to verify, once more, that America stood with and by its equally indispensable ally. But whether Biden and his camp knew it or not, in that instant the president’s already precarious political fate may have been sealed by an image now fixed in consciousness and memory – the unintended consequence of an act of “bro”-like solidarity on an airport tarmac in Israel. The unmistakable irony, of course, is that Biden had rushed to Tel Aviv to confirm his comradery with an indicted authoritarian whom, for years, he had treated with wariness and, on occasion, contempt. Bygones were apparently bygones.
Price freezes, discounts on pantry items among grocery stabilization efforts coming ‘soon’: minister
Canadians frustrated by their food bills will “soon” start to see the big grocers taking action to address prices, including price freezes and price-matching campaigns, Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne announced Thursday. Providing an update on
what he is calling the “initial commitments” from Loblaw, Metro, Empire, Walmart and Costco, Champagne said all five have agreed to begin rolling out various actions at each of their stores that will result in lower grocery prices for Canadians “in the coming
days and weeks.” For example, the government is promising that grocers will implement “aggressive discounts across a basket of key food products that represent the most important purchases for most households,” a step the minister said is just the beginning “of a number of actions” being taken. The minister said these examples are just some of the measures pitched to him by the big grocers, suggesting that the government’s pressure on them to get prices under control, has spurred a more competitive dynamic between the big five. “The winners of that are obviously Canadians,” the minister said, pointing to recent grocery flyers as evidence of pre-Thanksgiving sales. “It will be up to Canadians to judge them, to benefit from the best offers.” In addition, Champagne said the federal government is establishing a “grocery task force” within
the Office of Consumer Affairs that will be focused on monthly monitoring of grocers’ commitments and actions taken by others in the food industry. This task force will be empowered to “investigate and uncover practices that hurt consumers, such as ‘shrinkflation’ and ‘dequaliflation’.” Champagne also met with international manufacturing companies and domestic manufacturers, after the Retail Council of Canada called for Ottawa to work with more players along the supply chain to tackle the issue. In a statement on Thursday, Retail Council of Canada spokesperson Michelle Wasylyshen said “keeping food prices as low as possible” has been Canadian grocers’ top priority since inflation surged at the end of the pandemic, pointing to how domestic prices have fared in comparison to other countries... B.C. boy dies by suicide after online sextortion: RCMP
Warning: This story is about a child who died by suicide and may be disturbing to readers. A list of resources for anyone in crisis is included at the bottom of the article. Mounties in northern British Columbia are investigating after a 12-year-old boy died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following an apparent case of online sextortion. Prince George RCMP officers attended a home where the boy was found suffering a gunshot wound on Oct. 12, the detachment said in a news release Monday. “The investigation revealed that the youth took his own life in response to online sex-
tortion,” police said. Investigators are still working to identify a suspect in the case. In the meantime, officers are urging parents and caregivers to speak with their children about the dangers of chatting online with people they do not know. “While not every case of online sextortion will end in tragedy, the consequences of this kind of activity can follow a youth for their entire life, which needs to be something we talk about openly with our kids,” Prince George RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jennifer Cooper said. Reports of sextortion, in which someone extorts money or sexual favours
from someone by threatening to reveal personal photos or evidence of their sexual activity, are on the rise in Prince George, according to police. The detachment says the activity is most prevalent with youths between 13 and 18 years old. So far this year, the Prince George RCMP has received 62 reports of online sextortion, surpassing the 56 reports received in 2022. Investigators say anyone who believes they are a victim of sextortion should immediately stop all communication with the peraccounts used to communicate with the petrator and not give in to their demands. person and report the activity to caregivers Victims are advised to deactivate any online or police. According to Filippo Donvito in his research paper titled ‘Saladin’s Christian hostages and prisoners: Hangman or Gentleman?’ Around 20,000 poor Christians who had no money to pay the ransom were pardoned by the Sultan and were allowed to leave the city. Due to this act of generosity, thousands of Christians converted to Islam. In the 12th century this act was an unimaginable act. This act of kindness is well documented in the history books and is one of the many reasons to call Sultan Salahuddin as a champion of human rights.
Protection to the People Leaving the City
It was nowhere mentioned in the surrender agreement that the Sultan’s army would provide protection to the Christians. But Sultan ordered his army to provide protection to the Christians going away from Jerusalem, till they reach a safe place. This act of the Sultan is even praised till now by his enemies.

China welcomes all efforts conducive to ceasefire, deescalating Gaza situation: FM spokesperson
BEIJING, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- China welcomes all efforts that are conducive to bringing about ceasefire and deescalating the situation, foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said on the Palestinian-Israeli issue on Monday. Wang made the remarks at a regular press briefing when asked to comment on the current situation in Gaza. According to reports, the Al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, announced that it would delay the release of hostages until Israel allows aid trucks to enter northern Gaza, accusing
Israel of violating the terms regarding aid in the ceasefire agreement and continuing to open fire. The Israeli military said that it will immediately return to striking and operations in the Gaza Strip once the truce ends and that the fighting would continue until all hostages are freed and Hamas itself is dismantled. Wang said since Israel and Hamas reached the ceasefire agreement, both sides have released three groups of detainees. “Steps towards peace, however small, should be encouraged. Difficulties in protecting civilians, however daunting, must be overcome with every possible effort,” the spokesperson said. Noting that this round of Palestinian-Israeli conflict has continued for more than 50 days, causing great casualties and serious humanitarian disasters, Wang said violence does not bring true security and the use of force will not create lasting peace. Protest Rally In Front Of Poilievre calling on ‘unelected’ Senate to ‘immediately’ pass farm fuels carbon tax bill Mp Kerry Lynne Findlay’s Office
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is pushing for MPs to call on senators to “immediately” pass a bill that would exempt certain farm fuels from the carbon price. The legislation he’s angling to advance would eliminate the price on pollution on certain fuels used in agricultural activities, namely propane and natural gas used for grain drying, and for heating and cooling farm buildings. Poilievre — who has accused Liberal cabinet ministers, including Environment and Climate Change Minister Steven Guilbeault — of pressuring senators to reject the bill, is hoping an opposition day motion he introduced in the House of Commons on Tuesday will move things forward. “That the House call on the unelected Senate to immediately pass Bill C-234, An Act to amend the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act, to remove the carbon tax on the farmers that feed Canadians, as passed
by the democratically elected House,” reads Poilievre’s motion, which is set to be debated for most of the day Tuesday and voted on later in the week. Bill C-234 is a Conservative private member’s bill that cleared the House of Commons last March, but has been back in the spotlight in recent weeks while the upper chamber debates some possible amendments. It’s also become a controversial partisan football, with the Conservatives accusing the Liberals of creating carbon tax carve-outs only for people in regions where they need to shore up votes in the next election. Poilievre kicked off debate on his motion Tuesday morning by saying the majority of democratically elected MPs have already voted in favour of the bill. In March, every Conservative, Bloc Quebecois, NDP and Green MP voted to pass the bill, in addition to one independent MP and three Liberal MPs. Poilievre also again accused the Liberals of interfering to block it in the Senate, where members are not elected but rather appointed. “Common-sense Conservatives have a bill that has been passed by this House, that would take the tax off,” he said. “The prime minister has deployed his carbon tax minister to pressure senators to block that bill in an undemocratic attack on the prerogative of the commoners to decide who pays what.” ...Source: https://www.ctvnews.ca/

Khawar Maneka files case against Imran, Bushra Bibi for ‘fraudulent marriage’
K
hawar Maneka, the ex-husband of PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi, on Saturday filed a case against the former prime minister and first lady over the allegation of fraudulent marriage and fornication. The development comes a day after a petitioner in a similar case withdrew his plea, citing technical reasons. Earlier this week, Maneka had held Imran responsible for ruining his married life before eventually marrying Bushra Bibi himself. The allegations were met with strong criticism from PTI leaders who questioned the moral necessity of Maneka’s interview, while their PML-N adversaries used the same to sling mud at the former premier. Maneka submitted a private complaint today against the husband and wife in the court of Islamabad East Senior Civil Judge Qudratullah under Sections 34 (common intention), 496 (marriage ceremony fraudulently gone through without lawful marriage) and 496B (fornication) of the Pakistan Penal Code. During the hearing, he also submitted a
The complaint urged the court that Imran and Bushra be “summoned and punished strictly in accordance with law in the interest of justice”. It said Imran was introduced to his family through Bushra’s sister “during the Islamabad dharna”, likely referring to the PTI’s 2014 sit-in. Maneka that the PTI chief often visited his house for hours in his absence “under the guise of spiritual healings”, which was “not
only undesirable but unethical”. He further said that Imran used to call Bushra at late hours, with the latter also given separate contact numbers and mobile phones for communication. Maneka said he “half-heartedly” divorced Bushra on Nov 14, 2017, and had reconciliation in mind before February 2018 but “premature nikah during iddah” between Bushra and Imran “frustrated his plans”. The plea claimed that Farah Khan asked him to change the date of divorce on the papers but Maneka refused to do so. Regardless, Imran and Bushra got married to each other on January 1, 2018, the petition said, with a copy of the purported nikah papers also attached. Maneka termed their nikah and
marriage ceremony “neither legal nor Islamic as it was solemnised without observing iddah period and both of them established illicit relations with each other”. The ex-husband further said that Imran and Bushra contracted nikah again in February 2018 after the reports of the earlier nikah surfaced. The complaint said the “heinous offence of fornication has been committed by respondents no.1 (Imran) and 2 (Bushra) and drama of marriage was staged on Jan 1, 2018, knowingly that iddah period” of Bushra was not complete. he Islamabad High Court (IHC) has fixed for hearing a plea against former army chief Gen (rtd) Qamar Javed Bajwa, ex-spymaster Lt Gen (rtd) Faiz Hameed and two journalists in a case pertaining to allegedly flouting the Official Secrets Act on Tuesday (November 28). On October 9, IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq had issued notices to the former military generals, concerned journalists and the director general of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in response to a petition seeking legal proceedings against them. In the petition, Atif Ali — a concerned citizen — had sought the registration of a case against journalists Javed Chaudhry, Shahid Maitla and the former generals over news reports
regarding the ex-military officers’ role in politics. The petitioner had contended that the interview of ex-Gen Bajwa was conducted in a “reckless” manner and the journalists, Chaudhry and Maitla, did not show any sense of responsibility in publishing them. The petition claimed the revelations made in the interview(s) were a violation of the Official Secrets Act and tantamount to inciting mutiny and disharmony. It requested the court to issue directions to the DG FIA to register an FIR (first information report) against the former chief of army staff, ex-Inter Services Intelligence chief and journalists. Besides, it also sought directions from the Pakistan Electronic Media Regu latory Authority to impose a ban on the two journalists. Initially, the registrar’s office of the IHC in March this year had raised an objection, saying that the high court was not an appropriate forum and asked the petitioner to approach the relevant authorities. When the petition was heard by the IHC chief justice, he had asked the DG FIA to proceed in accordance with the law. However, the petitioner during the hearing had
informed the court that the investigation agency did not take any action. Subsequently, Justice Farooq had issued notices to all respondents which included Gen Bajwa, ex-ISI DG, journalists Chaudhry and Maitla, and the FIA. en Bajwa had reportedly discussed various matters, including the no-confidence motion, against former prime minister and PTI Chairman Imran Khan, civil-military relations and other issues in interviews with the journalists. The petitioner had also annexed these articles with the petition. The petition stated that the authors of these news articles allegedly distorted facts in order to enhance the viewership. It further said the articles raised certain questions on the conduct of military authorities which required to be probed. The petitioner claimed that the respondents had committed a “cognisable offence” and were liable to proceed in accordance with the relevant laws. Imran’s Toshakhana plea fixed for Nov 30 Separately, the IHC fixed for hearing on Nov 30 former prime minister and PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s appeals against the pun-
ishment awarded to him and the verdict in the Toshakhana case, including his disqualification by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). A two-judge bench comprising CJ Farooq and Justice Tariq Jehangiri will hear the appeals. The court had also issued notices to the ECP in the last hearing. On Aug 29, the IHC had suspended Imran’s three-year sentence in the Toshakhana case and ordered his release on bail. On August 5, a trial court in Islamabad had convicted the PTI chief in the case filed by the ECP that involved concealing details of state gifts and jailed him for three years. The verdict meant he was disqualified from contesting general elections for five years. Imran had subsequently filed an appeal in the high court against his conviction. He had also approached the Supreme Court (SC) against the IHC’s decision to remand the case back to the trial court judge who had convicted him. However, the SC had acknowledged “procedural defects” in Imran’s conviction but had opted to wait for the IHC decision on Imran’s plea. Source: .dawn.com/news
he current situation with the global markets has made all of us feel the stress on our mental health. Inflation, rising food costs, home expenses going through the roof, rental price increases, mortgage payments skyrocketing, and the general increase in our lifestyle and need for things feels like it just does not end. To add to this stress, we feel the constant stress of job insecurity and instability. It feels like everything is unstable including our jobs and the ones we have aren’t enough. We are working longer hours, taking home less money, and constantly thinking of increasing our productivity to make more money. Our mental health can be impacted greatly if we feel like we cannot pay our bills and the financial stress is even greater if we cannot manage our spending to help us stay afloat financially. We have to make difficult decisions regarding our spending and budgets and cut things out that we never expected or for things that bring us joy. Lastly, job stress including insecurity and lifestyle creep can
make it even harder to keep up with income levels. The mental toll of these things can be extremely heavy and hard to manage. When prices rise, mental health can be greatly affected. It can lead to anxiety and depressionthat is cycled every month when bills are due, and our pay isn’t enough. Although there are many resources available, there are some things we can do to help this stress. 1. Creating a Budget during economic changes This time is perfect for taking a closer look at where your money is going. This can be painful as you reflect on the things you spend your money on as it indicates a lot about your personality. Allocating budgets to eating out, shopping, subscriptions, can reduce the financial stress that you may feel every month especially the feeling of helplessness because it may feel like you don’t know where your money is going. Knowing the basics of income and expenses in your life can help you create clarity on the things that are working for you and the areas of improvement. 2. Staying informed with the economy Being aware of the economy can be half the battle. This means keeping an eye on high

statement under section 200 (examination of complainant) of the Code of Criminal Procedure. In the statement, Maneka, who was recently given bail in a graft case, reiterated his claims voiced in his interview and the plea he filed. Subsequently, the court issued notices to the three witnesses mentioned in the case — namely Istekham-i-Pakistan Party member Awn Chaudhry, Mufti Muhammad Saeed who officiated the nikah and Maneka’s house employee Latif — and directed them to appear before the court on November 28 (Tuesday).

inflation rates, interest rates, subsidies available by the government, and utilizing the tools available to us. Understanding how factors such as unemployment, wages, taxes, and tools for savings can help alleviate the financial stress most of us are feeling during this period. 3. Investing in your health during periods of high financial stress Although this is the time to save money and watch your spending, putting funds towards your mental health would be appropriate if it is hindering your ability to live life. This could mean investing in a gym, therapist, or yoga classes to relive the pressure that has been placed on you. It allows you to take a mental break from thinking about your finances all day and gain direction on the things that actually matter. Staying connected with friends and family help put things into perspective. 4. Take Action Your financial situation will only change if you take action. Putting in a budget that works, being informed about the financial situation surrounding you, investing in yourself professionally and mentally, and taking the necessary steps is
the only way to escape burnout during these difficult times. These steps will motivate you to make financial goals and to be focused on meeting them. Having goals and meeting them provides you with confidence to meet the challenges that most of us are facing today.
Just Chill •
The great thing about inflation is if you spend the same on groceries, the bags are lighter and easier to carry home. • How outrageous are smartphone prices nowadays? Well, if you fell and hear something break, you pray it’s a bone.
