Canada breaks with long-standing Israel stance at UN in voting for Gaza ceasefire

TTAWA - Canada voted in favour of a non-binding resolution at the United Nations on Tuesday that calls for “an immediate humanitarian ceasefire” between Israel and Hamas, in a move that broke with years of Canadian policy and shocked Jewish groups.

Packed hospitals, treacherous roads, harried parents: Newborns in Gaza face steeper odds of survival

EIR AL-BALAH, GAZA STRIP - The birth of their daughter should have marked the beginning of a joyful chapter for the young Palestinian couple. Instead, the devastating war in Gaza, now in its third month, has turned childbirth and parenthood into a time of worry and fear for Salim and Israa al-Jamala. First, they endured a perilous journey, dodging missile fire, to reach a maternity ward. And now, the couple is sheltering with their newborn in the partially tented courtyard of another hospital where they can’t care properly for their now 3-week-old daughter, her mother’s namesake. His wife’s breast milk is not sufficient because she cannot eat enough as a result of widespread food shortages, said the 29-year-old Salim, rocking

faith Narrated/Authority of Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (saw) said: that the Prophet (saw) said:”The Hour will not begin until ‘Eisa bin Maryam comes down as a just judge and a just ruler. He will break the cross, kill the pigs and abolish the Jizyah, and wealth will become so abundant that no one will accept it.” Sunan Ibn Majah. Chapter 39,

What have Allah and His Messenger said about Islamic Teachings about Isa (AS)? [And mention] when the angels said, “O Mary, indeed Allah gives you good tidings of a word from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary – distinguished in this world and the Hereafter and among those brought near [to Allah]. And he will speak to people in ˹his˺ infancy and adulthood and will be one of the righteous.” She [Mary] said, “My Lord, how will I have a child when no man has touched me?” [The angel] said, “Such is Allah; He creates what He wills. When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, ‘Be,’ and it is. Surah Ali-Imran (3) – Verse 45-46

The Story of Isa (AS)

W

e are all familiar with the story of Maryam being given a child by Allah (SWT) – the miracle of the child of Isa (AS). Jibreel (AS) descended upon Maryam and informed her of her gift, but she was distraught, as she knew she would be unable to explain this sudden happening to her people. We learn from what Jibreel (AS) said, “You are not responsible for justifying this; in fact, tell them that you are fasting.” In Bani Isra’il, there was a fast where you would abstain from talking, just like how you would abstain from food and drink. So, she delivers the baby, and now it is time for her to go back to her people. As she is going back, some people spot her and say, “What is this? What a scandal! What have you done? You are from a good family, and we did not think you were capable of this.” Maryam did not say anything, and simply pointed to the child. They said, “How are we supposed to speak to a newborn child?” Now, the next miracle of Isa (AS) appeared. Allah (SWT) allowed him to talk as a newborn. Allah (SWT) quotes what Isa (AS) said at that time: “I am the slave of Allah. Allah has given me the book and has made me a prophet. I am a source of blessings, and

left completely hanging just by those nails which have been hammered through their bones. In this way, the person would bleed to death. This is what happened, but from the light of the Qur’an we learn that it did not happen to Isa (AS), and neither did they kill Isa (AS), nor did they crucify him. It was made to look like that. Allah (SWT) would later then send him back down to Sham. The prophet (SAW) tells us that he will descend in Damascus being carried by angels on the minaret, and he will descend from a ladder at the time of salah, and he will be brought forward to lead, but he will not lead. The person who Allah (SWT) has chosen to be the leader of the Ummah at that time, the person who is referred to as the Mahdi, will lead the salah. Isa (AS) will come back into this world as a follower of Muhammad (SAW). All of that will happen in that area, and from there, the armies will join around Isa (AS) and the Mahdi, and Isa (AS) will explain at that time that his mission is only to take care of the Dajjal, and that the rest of the Ummah will take care of whatever else must be done. The Qur’an says, “All the people of the book at that time (the Christians specifically) will all believe in him for as he truly was.” Not as the son of Allah (SWT), but as a prophet of him, and that he will come down as a follower of Muhammad (SAW), and based on that, they will all accept Islam. This, historically, marks the greatest events that happened in the land of Al-Masjid AlAqsa before the prophet (SAW)’s time. As you know, some 600 years or so passed before the prophet (SAW) was sent between the prophet (SAW) and Isa (AS). A lot of things happened in that land, but this was the single most significant event that happened until the time of the prophet (SAW) in that time. After the next 6 and a half centuries, when the prophet (SAW) was granted prophethood, he once again revived the importance of Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa and Bayt Al-Maqdis, and this was done by no other way itself but Allah (SWT) taking the prophet (SAW) there to visit. He did not just bring him there, but he also called all the prophets (SAW) to assemble there.

rophet ’Isa (as) (also known as Jesus) is the penultimate messenger of Allah (swt), sent around 570 years before the last and final Messenger of Allah, Prophet Muhammad (saw). He is, of course, an important figure in Islam, mentioned in the Qur’an several times. This article will set out seven things about ’Isa (as) which all Muslims should know! Before we begin, we’d like to mention a few of the titles ’Isa (as) is given in the Qur’an: 1: Al-Masih: This is his most famous title - it means ‘The Messiah’. When ’Isa (as) touched or wiped (in Arabic, masaha)

He was ‘a word’ from Allah and ‘highly honoured’. [Qur’an, 3:45] 6: Ul-ul-’Azm: Five messengers were called ‘those of determination’ - Nuh (as), Ibrahim (as), Musa (as), Isa (as), and of course their leader and our leader (Sayyid), Muhammad (saw). [Qur’an, 46:35] 7: Ibn Maryam: This means the son of Maryam (as), also known as Mary. Like Prophet Adam (as), ’Isa (as) had no father. Moreover, his mother’s high standing with Allah is well-known - she has an entire Surah named after her in the Qur’an and she was visited and addressed by the Angel Jibril (as): Source:muslimhands.org.uk/

Canada Grocery Rebate Eligibility, Amount, Next Payment Schedule?

Have you ever examined your grocery receipt, confused at how the total soared so swiftly? With the projection of food prices escalating around 6% this year, such concerns are bound to intensify. However, what if a mechanism existed to ease the financial pressure experienced during each checkout at your local grocery store? The beginning of Canada’s new Grocery Rebate offers precisely such a breather! As unveiled in Budget 2023, the Canadian Government has initiated a Grocery Rebate to extend financial aid to qualifying Canadians. This one-time rebate was issued on July 5, 2023, coinciding with the quarterly GST/ HST credit payment.

Amid the crisis in Gaza, people are calling for boycotting ‘Israeli’ goods. But do they work?

E

mpty restaurants or products being taken off shelves should not be seen as the end goal of boycotts. Recently, McDonalds Pakistan found itself in the line of fire when the fast food chain’s Israeli franchise announced it was giving away thousands of free meals to the Israeli army, stirring debate on whether certain brands are culpable for the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. The BDS — Boycott, Divest, and Sanction — movement is inherently a non-violent movement that calls for the boycott of corporations “complicit in the oppression of Palestinians.” One such example is that of HewlettPackard (HP), which has been accused of aiding Israel’s surveillance of dissidents and Palestinians in general through a biometric ID system. The BDS is a tactic more so than an organisation and “works to end international support for Israel’s oppression of Palestinians and pressure Israel to comply with international law”. Of late, the BDS movement has been gaining traction in countries like Pakistan, Turkey and Egypt due to the support of the Palestinian cause among citizens. Consumers in countries such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, Egypt, the UAE, Malaysia and Pakistan, among others, have spurned brands that are allegedly complicit in the oppression of Palestinians. In Pakistan, there have been calls to boycott various brands such as Dominos, Carrefour, McDonalds, Coca Cola and PepsiCo on so-

cial media. Certain retail stores, like the Imtiaz superstore chain in Karachi, have actively taken what were believed to be Israeli products or products by companies linked to Israeli conglomerates off their shelves. Local restaurant chain Kababjees took beverages such as Pepsi and Coca Cola off its menu. Celebrities like Ushna Shah and Usman Khalid Butt have been increasingly vocal about the crisis and the importance of boycotting products that have been identified by the BDS movement. Why are boycotts used? The idea of boycotting as an act of activism stems from the efficacy of such tactics during the South African apartheid regime, where sanctions were employed until it led to its eventual downfall. What is important to note here is that South African exports were consumer-oriented and could be substituted. Boycotts have been a popular choice when it comes to getting a state or a corporation to change their stance. The second case of boycotts used in the Muslim world was in 2005 when a Danish newspaper decided to publish a controversial cartoon, prompting a global boycott of the Danish brand ‘Arla’ by Muslim countries. Although ineffective on the newspaper itself, it did take Arla two years to rebuild its image in Muslim countries. According to Harvard Business Review, for boycotts to be effective, they must fulfil these four factors: Customers care passionately The cost of participation is low

The issues are easy to understand

Mass media is correctly utilised Are boycotts really effective? Even if these factors are met in the current scenario, one should not expect boycotts to hurt Israel’s economy or change its stance directly— when it has already displayed its readiness to weather such pressure time and again. This is primarily because Israel’s economy relies on its technological exports more so than consumer goods. According to Brookings Institute, the Israeli economy is less vulnerable to boycotts today than it was at the beginning of the regime. What this means is that Israeli exports are highly differentiated and not as consumer-oriented as one might think. In short, Israeli products are difficult to be replaced. Per Dr Akbar Zaidi, political economist and executive director at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), “Israel is a major exporter of software, spyware, drones and military ammunition. No country that buys from them will boycott them, they will vote against them in the United Nations General Assembly but they won’t ever boycott them.” “Money and war go hand in hand, where there’s war, there’s money to be made.” He cited the example of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the fact that Russia was able to withstand sanctions given Europe’s reliance on its gas. “Money is the most powerful ideology. People compromise whatever faith or be-

lief they have when it comes to money,” Dr Zaidi added. The recent Russia-Ukraine war is one such example of why boycotts have an indirect impact rather than a direct one. During the initial stages of the Russian invasion, companies such as McDonald’s, Starbucks, CocaCola, Nike, Apple, BP and Shell pulled out or temporarily put a halt to their operations in Russia. However, Russia was able to sustain its invasion.

Do boycotts hurt the local economy?

So should Pakistanis boycott goods and products by companies that are believed to be somewhat linked to Israel? According to Dr Zaidi, Pakistanis can boycott to their own disadvantage since such companies not only provide employment but also are the largest tax contributing sector to the economy. Dr Adil Nakhoda, an economist and associate professor at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), who frequently comments on Pakistan’s economy, agreed with Dr Zaidi, stating that expecting massive economic disruptions to various stakeholders may be farfetched for a small economy like Pakistan, without analysing the whole chain of ownership and investors and the impact on them. “The targeted stakeholders may not feel the financial impact as intended; rather boycotts may hamper economic activity and reduce the current demand of goods in Pakistan.”..(Extracted) Courtesy By: Mahira Sarfraz

UN General Assembly votes overwhelmingly to demand a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza

News Coninued from Page 1 ters for the future of both Israelis and “Countless Palestinian civilians in hate being directed towards Jews is unfolding before our eyes will only enhance the cycle of violence,” Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly said Tuesday on Parliament Hill. “This will not lead to the durable defeat of Hamas, which is necessary, and the threat that it poses to Israel. With the future of Israelis and Palestinians in mind, Canada is joining the international call for humanitarian ceasefire.” Canada has stated from the beginning that Israel has the right to defend itself, Joly said. “And how Israel defends itself matters. It mat-

Palestinians, and it matters for the future of the region,” she added. The latest war between Israel and Hamas began after the armed group’s militants launched a surprise attack in Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,200 people, including hundreds of civilians, and taking about 240 people hostage. Israel retaliated with airstrikes on the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, and cutting off its access to many essential supplies. Suicide bomber attacks police station in northwest Pakistan, killing 23 officers and wounding 32

News Coninued from Page 1 The attack targeted the Daraban police station in Dera Ismail Khan, a city in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province bordering Afghanistan, local police officer Kamal said. The province is a former stronghold of the militant Pakistani Taliban group, also known as Tehreek-eTaliban Pakistan or TTP. The newly formed militant group Tehreek-e-Jihad Pakistan, or TJP

-- believed to be an offshoot of the TTP -- claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement, saying it targeted the officers who were at the police station. The statement also claimed that 20 officers were killed. However, this couldn’t be independently verified. A larger number of security forces from across the country have had a constant presence lately at the Daraban police station where they were conducting intelligence-based

operations against militants in the area with help from local police, said Khan Pakistan’s President Arif Alvi denounced the attack and conveyed his condolences to the families of those who were “martyred”. In a statement, he said “their sacrifices would not go to waste” and that such attacks cannot weaken the resolve of security forces. Pakistan’s caretaker Interior Minister Sarfraz Bugti denounced the

onslaught in a statement, calling it an act of “terrorism.” Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has witnessed a rise in violence with several deadly incursions by militants this year. In January, at least 101 people were killed, mostly police officers, when a suicide bomber disguised as a policeman attacked a mosque in the northwestern city of Peshawar...Source:ctvnews.ca

What led to this fall’s oil price slide and what might come next?

Benchmark crude West Texas Intermediate broke below $70 US on Tuesday . The price of oil continued its rough ride this week, with the benchmark North American crude blend known as West Texas Intermediate, or WTI, skidding again below $70 US a barrel on Tuesday, down from September when the price was hovering around $90 US. This fall has seen oil prices take on a gradual — and often bumpy — decline, an about-face from multiple bullish forecasts in September that projected the return of

$100 US oil before the end of the year. On Tuesday, the January crude oil contract was down $2.71 US at $68.61 US per barrel. Analysts say there are a number of factors at play here, namely geopolitical instability, fears of a global recession and hesitation around whether there will be follow through on oil output cuts agreed to by Saudi Arabia, Russia and other members of OPEC+ in late November. Last week saw the seventh-consecutive weekly decline in crude prices, the longest consecutive losing streak on a weekly basis since the end of 2018, noted Rory Johnston, energy researcher and founder of the Commodity Context newsletter. “We’ve been in this very declining, kind of weakening environment since the end of September, and it just keeps getting worse,” Johnston said. “The market is clearly signalling deepening or worsening oversupply conditions.”.. India ask FBI to share intelligence on Sikh separatists: Reuters source

Director Christopher Wray, said the official, who works at the NIA and spoke on condition of anonymity. The issue of what New Delhi says are Sikh separatists operating against India from U.S. soil was discussed in “greater detail by a team of internal security officials from both countries,” the official said. ”India has requested the U.S. officials to share inputs on suspected individuals who have in recent years been recruited and embedded in the separatist movement,” the official said. The NIA said in a statement on Tuesday that Wray met NIA Director General Dinkar Gupta and held discussions on issues including “the acts and activities of Terrorist-Organised Criminal Networks, ongoing investigations in the U.S. in the attack on the Indian consulate in San Francisco, investigations of cyber-terror and cyber-crimes of various kinds.”..

NEW DELHI - India has asked the United States to share intelligence on Sikh separatists living there amid investigations into an accusation that an Indian official was linked to a plot to kill a Sikh separatist on American soil, an Indian official said on Tuesday. Nawaz gets clean slate after final acquittal

ISLAMABAD: The conviction of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in the Al-Azizia case — one of the three references instituted against him in light of the Panama Papers — was declared void on Tuesday, as the Islamabad High Court acquitted him despite a National Accountability Bureau (NAB) request for a re-trial. Following the reversal of his conviction in the Al-Azizia and Avenfield cases, legal experts believe that the PML-N supreme leader may also become eligible to contest polls and hold public

office. During Tuesday’s proceedings, the IHC division bench, comprising Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, observed that the trial court convicted Mr Sharif upon “evidence based on photocopies”. While the bench intended to conclude the case on Tuesday, NAB tried to extend the proceedings, with its special prosecutor Azhar Maqbool Shah asking the court to remand the case to the accountability court. He argued that since the late accountability judge Arshad Malik was removed from service for misconduct, the IHC may send the matter back to the trial court for a decision on merit. Justice Aurangzeb asked NAB to advance arguments and share the evidence that the bureau intended to submit to the trial court. The IHC chief justice asked the prosecution to show the money trail, any original documents, and proof that Mr Sharif acquired Al-Azizia and Hill Metal Establishment (HME) through corrupt practices... Ibrahim Ali’s lawyer seeks murder appeal, citing ‘third-party suspects’ in killing

A lawyer for Ibrahim Ali is seeking to appeal his client’s first-degree murder conviction in the killing of a 13-year-old girl in a British Columbia park, citing 25 grounds including allegations about “third-party suspects.” The notice of appeal filed by Kevin McCullough says two other men were arrested for the killing, but the B.C. Supreme Court erred by refusing to allow evidence about them to be brought up at the trial. The notice also describes “two Asian men” who McCullough says were seen carrying a heavy bag near where the girl’s body was found in Burnaby’s Central Park in 2017. Other grounds for appeal include alleged bias against the defence, a dispute over the Crown’s suggestion the girl did not have a boyfriend, and that the court didn’t properly address safety concerns about death threats made against Ali’s lawyers. The trial con-

cluded Friday with the jury convicting Ali of killing the girl who can’t be named because of a publication ban, although hearings on matters arising from the case continue. McCullough also said in an interview and in an affidavit filed Monday that police told him someone close to the proceedings brought a handgun into the Vancouver courtroom on Friday with an intention to kill...

Let’s work together to change perception, change mindsets, and change how we are perceived. Assistant Commissioner of Police- Operations (ACP) Livai Driu said this while addressing members of the Fiji Police Force Headquarters during their Operations Readiness Check (ORC) Parade yesterday at the Police Mobile Force in Nasinu. ACP Driu reminded the officers to be mindful of the communities they serve and to lead by example. “As members of Headquarters formation, we should lead by example and be the first to put up our hands when the going gets tough,” ACP Driu said. “It’s about winning hearts and minds. When we have the support we need from our communities, the workload becomes tolerable. In other words, we need to give our communities a reason to work with us,” he said.ACP Driu also used

the opportunity to acknowledge the support of their families.“We are at times caught up in the demands of policing, that we tend to forget that our families are also affected by our long hours, early starts and late nights, as they too have to make sacrifices and adjust their lives to accommodate our work schedules.” .. IMF approves $681m in 2nd tranche of loan for Bangladesh

The IMF board yesterday approved the second instalment of $681 million for Bangladesh, putting to bed the uncertainty surrounding the tranche given that the country failed to meet two of the conditions needed for its release. The development, which was confirmed to The Daily Star by Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal, will go some way towards easing the jitters surrounding the Bangladesh economy in the face of depleting foreign currency reserves and elevated inflation. The $681 million will be disbursed soon and is expected to cover import bills of about 15 days. One of the unmet preconditions was to maintain a minimum net international reserve (NIR) of $24.46 billion by the end of June. The NIR target was missed by about $3 billion as the government had to delve into

reserves to pay for essential imports of fuel, fertiliser, and foodstuff. The minimum tax revenue target was also missed: the government needed to collect at least Tk 345,630 crore in tax revenue in fiscal 2022-23. It finally raised Tk 327,664 crore, which fell Tk 17,946 crore short of the goal, according to a finance division report...S.thedailystar.net

Somalia - Statistics & Facts

L

ocated in Eastern Africa, Somalia is a country that has been in an prolonged state of war since 1960. Vulnerable to extended periods of famine and epidemics, and lacking basic services such as sanitation or medical care, the population continues to increase, largely driven by the consequential high fertility rate, which amounts to almost 6 children per woman. Somalia is thus one of the most fertile countries around the world. Additionally, Somalia’s population is quite young; roughly half of the inhabitants are 14 years and younger, and the median age of the population is only 16.5 years - unsurprisingly, life expectancy at birth is also devastastingly low at only about 55 years. A high scarcity of water and food, shortage of proper medical services, as well as a high terrorism risk result in Somalia having one of the highest mortality rates worldwide - and the second-highest mortality rate for infants. The Federal Republic of Somalia was under British and Italian occupation until July 1960, when the two countries granted independence to their territories. Shortly after, a government was to be established, but the efforts resulted in a governmental crisis and the president being assassinated in a military coup. Approximately 10 years later, a civil war erupted and divided the country in two opposite groups. During the 1990s and the early 2000s, there were several unsuccessful peace attempts. In 2004, a new transitional parliament was put in place, and eight years later a new constitution was finally drafted

and approved. Today, the government tries to gain control over more areas in the country, but major cities are still unsafe due to terrorism, including Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu. The absence of security and order in the country gives terrorist groups more opportunities to commit acts of terror, such as the taking of hostages , kidnapping, piracy, and terrorist attacks. Moreover, corruption is rampant in Somalia, which leaves the country in social and economical turmoil. Despite the fact that Somalia currently lacks effective governance, the state maintains a rather informal economy mainly based on the agrarian sector, which employs the vast majority of the population. In the last couple of years, the GDP growth rate stagnated just under 2.5 percent, and suddenly slumped below 2 percent in 2017 due to a drought that ravaged the country. At the moment, inflation fluctuates quite a lot as a consequence of the social and economic situation, but is estimated to stabilize at around 2.6 percent in the following years. The humanitarian crises, exacerbated by climate conditions, as well as regular terrorism attacks resulted in large displacement of population over the past few years, with many of the Somali people fleeing to neighboring countries or Arabic-speaking countries. Somalia is a Federal State composed of two levels of government: the federal government and the federal member states (FMS), which include both state and local governments. FMS also dispose their own constitutions and armed forces. Since the 15 May 2022 election, Hassan

Sheikh Mohamud (HSM) from Peace and Development Party is the new president of Somalia. On 7 August 2022, the Parliament endorsed the new Somali Government, comprising 26 Ministers, 24 State Ministers and 25 Deputy Ministers. Somalia is de-facto ruled by a gentlemen agreement among the major clan-families that dominate the country.

Mogadishu: Capital of Somalia Total population from 2012 to 2022 17.6 Million Somalia Refugee Crisis

The Somali refugee crisis is one of the most challenging mass displacement situations in the world. Over the last 30 years, hundreds of thousands of people have fled Somalia due to political instability and a dangerous civil war that broke out in the 1990s. In February 2023, clashes around the city of Laascaanood in Somalia caused increasing internal displacement, with at least 150,000 people forced to flee within Somalia, and nearly 100,000 Somali refugees fleeing to Ethiopia, arriving in remote, extremely isolated and drought-affected areas. Many of the Somalis fleeing are women, children and vulnerable people. According to Statistics Canada, there are 62,550 persons of Somali origins spread across Canada, with Toronto and Edmonton being the largest enclaves. Of these, 8,315 are recent immigrants and 37,115 live in Somalispeaking households. Trade. Somalia has a large trade deficit. Its chief export commodities are livestock and

bananas, which are mainly sent to Arab countries. Other exports include hides and skins, fish, and frankincense and myrrh.

Somalia’s challenges in 2023

Two key interlinked dynamics will define developments in Somalia in 2023. The first is the scale of starvation in the country. The second is how the Somalian government and the jihadi military and political organization al-Shabaab will respond to anti-al-Shabaab clan uprisings. Since mid-2022, these uprisings have been backed by the new government of Somalian President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, with far greater resolve than his predecessor Mohamed Abdullahi “Farmaajo” mustered.

World Human Rights Day: Gaza Genocide Raises Hard Questions As to Concept of Human Rights The American Human Rights Council (AHRC-USA) joins the United Nations, countries around the world, fellow human rights organizations and all peace-loving people in observing Human Rights Day that falls annually on December 10. On December 10, 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). In 1950, the United Nations General Assembly passed resolution 423(V) to officially recognize December 10 as Human Rights Day. The Declaration of Human Rights was a promise of human rights for everyone around the world, regardless of their background. All countries around the world who are members of the UN are bound by the Declaration. No exceptions. There is no Israel exception. This year’s Human Rights Day falls amidst several conflicts across the globe that are putting the very idea of human rights in doubt. The world has been witnessing two different sets of standards for human rights.

The most powerful countries, including the US, choose to be selective as to human rights. This politicization of human rights has made human rights advocacy appear as a convenient tool to serve political interests and agendas. It is a huge disservice to the human rights cause. The Israeli ongoing genocidal war against the occupied Palestinians in Gaza and in the West Bank and the Ukraine war are two prime examples of such double standards as to human rights. These two wars and how the West has dealt with them pushed many people to question the concept of human rights as proclaimed by the US and other Western countries. The world is witnessing live industrial scale Israeli violations of human rights of Palestinians. Making matters worse is that the leading proponent of human rights in the world, the US, has been shamelessly providing unlimited support to the Israeli genocide. The level of deaths and destruction in Gaza is apocalyptic. The real numbers of the

dead and injured are much higher than the reported ones. many remain buried under the rubble. The genocidal war on Gaza is eviscerating the concept of human rights. The world is shocked that the US has vetoed a UN Security Council resolution simply calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. The US ignored millions around the world, and in the US, who have

been calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. “The Israeli genocidal campaign on Gaza is a catastrophe for the people of Gaza,” said Imad Hamad, AHRC Executive Director. “The US position on this genocide has been a disaster for the cause of human rights,” added Hamad. “The damage will be with us for years,”

concluded Hamad. Source: American Human Rights Council (AHRC-USA

For many customer service employees, working during the busy holiday season often means dealing with angry and even abusive customers. But some Vancouver businesses are taking a stand against aggressive patrons. Triet Duong, co-owner of Mon Pitou, a cafe in the Fairview neighbourhood, says he empowers his staff to stand up for

themselves when necessary. “It’s customer service, not customer servants. There is a line that can’t be crossed,” said Duong, adding aggressive behaviour can be more common during the holidays. Data provided by WorkSafeBC shows claims for violent acts have steadily increased in the retail sector over the past decade. Employers are required to have procedures to eliminate or minimize the risk for violence or harassment from customers and clients, according to WorkSafeBC. At Mon Pitou, this means grabbing the situation by the horns. Staff are trained to work with the customer to resolve problems before they escalate, and to not be afraid to kick out customers who are disrespectful. “We do keep our customer experience high, but there’s a smarter way to do it that doesn’t involve being a punching bag,” said Duong. He said staff are taught to steer the conversation with confidence; this involves compo-

sure, eye contact, and a strong knowledge of the cafe’s policies. Duong shared a recent incident where a guest raised his voice at a barista because he felt he was waiting too long for his drink. “The barista had the full confidence to ask him to leave because he was not talking to her in a respectful manner, which is a requirement for us,” said Duong. Duong said while many other businesses instruct their employees to take a more passive approach, his cafe’s methods have resulted in fewer incidents being escalated to a manager. He says other businesses, especially small businesses like his, could benefit from a similar approach. “At a bigger block cafe chain, they’re still profiting if they’re remaking a drink five times,” said Duong.

The federal government unveiled details about its highly anticipated Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) earlier on Monday. The CDCP is a $13-billion insurance program that will start covering most basic dentistry costs next year for uninsured Canadians with a household income under $90,000. That’s about nine million Canadians, according to the federal government. In its current form, the plan is expected to cost the federal treasury about $4.4 billion per year. Applications will first open to eligible seniors aged 87 and older. Applications for other age groups will then be phased in with a staggered approach, with the process opening up to all eligible applicants aged 18 and above sometime in 2025. According to NDP Leader

Jagmeet Singh, his party “forced” Ottawa to enact the program as a condition of the confidence-and-supply agreement that could keep the Liberals in power until 2025. “People are living with pain, people are worried about the cost if they do have to go to the dentist,” he told a news conference in Toronto on Monday. CBC News has been fielding questions about the CDCP since the announcement. Here are some of those questions answered. Who pays for what under the CDCP? The CDCP will help cover the cost of various oral health-care services, with the focus on “those deemed medically necessary by an oral health-care professional,” an information officer with the general information line for

the government of Canada told CBC News.

15 pakistan / L . S t y Father of Pakistan’s Nation Qaid e Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah Dec 25-1876 Jamadi ul II,02, 1445H December 15, 2023

M

ohammad Ali Jinnah December 25, 1876 – September 11, 1948) was a 20th century lawyer, politician, statesman and the founder of Pakistan. He is popularly and officially known in Pakistan as Quaid-e-Azam (“Great Leader”) and Baba-e-Qaum (“Father of the Nation”).

Jinnah served as leader of the All-India Muslim League from 1913 till Pakistan’s independence on August 14, 1947 and P a k i s t a n’s first Governor-General from August 15, 1947 till his death on September 11, 1948. Jinnah rose to prominence in the Indian National Congress initially expounding ideas of Hindu-Muslim unity and helping shape the 1916 Luck now Pact between the Muslim League and the Indian National Congress; he also became a key leader in the All India Home Rule League. He proposed

a fourteen-point constitutional reform plan to safeguard the political rights of Muslims in a self-governing India. Jinnah later advocated the Two-Nation Theory embracing the goal of creating a separate Muslim state as per the Lahore Resolution. The League won most reserved Muslim seats in the elections of 1946. After the British and Congress backed out of the Cabinet Mission Plan Jinnah called for a Direct Action Day to achieve the formation of Pakistan. The direct action by the Muslim League and its Volunteer Corps, resulted in massive rioting in Calcutta between Muslims and Hindus/Sikhs. As the Indian National Congress and Muslim League failed to reach a power sharing formula for united India, it prompted both the parties and the British to agree to independence of Pakistan and India. As the first Governor-General of Pakistan, Jinnah led efforts to lay the foundations of the new state of Pakistan, frame national policies and rehabilitate millions of Muslim refugees who had migrated from India. There are many few Personalities in

this world that helps their nation to achieve their goals. Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah is one of the great personality of the Pakistan and The Muslims of the Subcontinents who change the life of the Muslims in Subcontinents and Make a Separate homeland for them. He is also known as the Babae-Qaum (The Father of the Nation). The first Governor-General of Pakistan, Jinnah worked to establish the new nation’s government and policies, and to aid the millions of Muslim refugees who had emigrated from India. He also called for minority rights in Pakistan and personally supervised the establishment of refugee camps for those who had fled the new nation of India after the separation. Jinnah died at age 71 in September 1948, just over a year after Pakistan gained independence from the British Raj. He left a deep and respected legacy in Pakistan, though he is less well thought of in India. According to his biographer, Stanley Wolpert, he remains Pakistan’s greatest leader. Azan Awais ton leads Pakistan to 8-wicket win over India in U-19 Asia Cup

An undefeated century by Azan Awais helped Pakistan net an eight-wicket victory over India in their U-19 Asia Cup campaign at the ICC Cricket Academy Ground in Dubai on Sunday. Pakistan had won the toss and opted to field first. India had managed to score 259-9, a target which Pakistan managed to chase with 18 balls remaining. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said the U-19 team “cruised to the target with much ease”. “A 110-run partnership between Shahzaib Khan and Azan Awais ensured that Pakistan U-19 dominated the Indian bowling after the first wicket fell. The partnership was broken in the 28th over when Shahzaib was caught off Murugan Abhishek’s bowling,

after scoring a half-century,” the PCB said. It added that captain Saad Baig replaced Shahzaib at the crease and produced a “quality half-century” with Azan. The two then put up an undefeated partnership of 125 runs to see the team through. “Azan was the star of the match as his superb century ensured that Pakistan U-19 remain in a commanding position throughout the chase. For his extraordinary batting display, he was awarded player of the match,” the PCB said. The squad next faces Afghanistan on Tuesday at the same venue. On Friday, pacer Mohammad Zeeshan had put up a brilliant show to help Pakistan get off the mark in their U-19 Asia Cup campaign with a seven-wicket drubbing of Nepal at the same venue.
