esidents of Vancouver Island warned to brace for another storm on Thursday. Much of southern B.C. lay under a thick blanket of snow on Wednesday evening after a winter storm blew through the province. As of 4 p.m. PT, 28 centimetres of snow had fallen at Vancouver International Airport, and volunteer weather watchers were reporting more than 30 centimetres in some parts of the Lower Mainland, reaching a maximum of 39 centimetres in Chilliwack, according to Environment Canada. f a i t h The Prophet of Islam (peace and blessings upon him) said, “The year has twelve months, four of which are sacred, three consecutive, Dhū al-Qa’adah, Dhū al-Ḥijjah, Muḥarram and Rajab which comes between Jumādā and Sha’bān.” (Bukhārī)

The Significance of ‘Isra and Miraj

I

By: HABIB SIDDIQUI

sra and Miraj were the most miraculous and dignified journeys of the Prophet (Sal-lal-lahu alayhi wa sal-lam), which took place in the Shab-eMiraj (or the Night of Miraj) in the month of Rajab before his migration to Madinah. This miraculous journey was Allah’s wonderful response to the Prophet’s (S) sad state in the year, which is commonly known as “the year of great sadness” in which he (S) lost his beloved wife Khadija (Radi-Allahu Anha) and uncle Abu Talib, leaving him completely alone with no protection for him and his small band of Muslims against the hostile Quraysh (blasphemers) in Makkah; he (S) was also mercilessly persecuted by pagan Arabs in atTa’if when he invited them to Islam. It was during these trying times, when circumstances had reached desperate proportion, that Allah sent Angel Jibril (Alayis Salam) to take Rasulullah (S) on the most glorious journey ever experienced by anyone on earth. On that blessed night, Muhammad (S) was taken physically from the Grand Mosque in Makkah to al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem [Al-Quds], a month’s journey of 1230 Km (for a caravan). And this part of the journey is called ‘Isra. After reaching Jerusalem, the Prophet (S) entered the Masjid al-Aqsa where Allah had assembled for him all the Prophets – from Adam (AS) to Isa (AS). Prophet Muhammad (S) led them in the prayer. The second part of the nocturnal journey, which is called Miraj, took Muhammad (S) from Jerusalem to the heavens when he passed the boundaries of the physical universe to be in divine presence of Allah, and witness the Great Signs (al-Ayat ul-Kubra). The supernatural journey is mentioned in the Qur’an: “Glorified (and Exalted) is HE (above all that they associate with HIM) WHO took HIS slave (Muhammad (S)) for a journey by night from Al-Masjid-al-Haram (at Makkah) to Al-Masjid-al-Aqsa (in Jerusalem, the neighborhood) whereof WE have blessed, in order that WE might show him [Muhmmad (S)] of our Ayat (proofs, evidence, lessons, signs, etc.). Verily, HE is the ALL-HEARER, ALL SEER.” [Surah Al Isra, 17:01] On his (S) onward journey to the Heaven to meet with Allah (SWT), first, Muhammad (S) met with Adam (AS) in the 1st Heaven (1st sky). Then he (S) went to the 2nd Heaven (2nd sky) and met with Yahya (AS) and then to the 3rd Heaven and met with Isa (AS). Then he (S) went to the 4th Heaven and met with Idris (AS). Then he (S) went to the 5th Heaven to meet with Haroon (AS). Next, he (S) went to the 6th Heaven where he (S) met with Musa (AS). The Prophet (S) was then taken to the 7th Heaven where he (S) met Ibrahim (AS). Then he (S) reached SIDRATUL MUNTAHA, the boundary demarcating tree beyond which no creature is ever permitted to cross over! [Note: Sidrah in Arabic means the lote-tree and muntaha the extreme edge or limit. Thus, literally, sidrat-al-muntaha means the lote-tree that is situated on the extreme edge or limit.] After reaching SIDRATUL MUNTAHA, Jibril (AS) informed the Prophet (S) that this was his (AS) end point beyond which he (AS) was restricted and thus requested

the Prophet (S) to proceed alone. “(This was) when the lote-tree was covered with that which covered it [i.e., its splendor and glory exceeds all description. The divine glory and effulgence was such as can neither be conceived by man nor can any human language depict it adequately]. The sight (of the Prophet) did not swerve, nor did it transgress (its limit). Indeed, he (S) did see one of the greatest Signs of his LORD (Allah).” [Surah An-Najm, 53: 16-18] The Prophet (S), thus, proceeded alone and prayer at 50 times a day was prescribed upon his (S) ummah (community) by Allah. Later, upon request from Muhammad (S) the number of prayer times was reduced to five times a day (with the reward of 50 times). During his heavenly journey, the Prophet (S) was shown among other things the followings: the Angel In-Charge of Hell, the punishment that awaits the sinners who (i) devour the property of orphans, (ii) devour interests on money, and (iii) commit adultery. After his return to Makkah from the Miraj, the Prophet (S) described to the people what had happened to him the previous night. There were many who doubted his (S) journey thinking that it was an illusion or a dream. The blasphemers belied the Prophet (S) and mocked him, saying, “We need a month to get there and back, and you are claiming to have done all this in one night?” They said to Abu Bakr, “Look at what your companion is saying. He says he went to Jerusalem and came back in one night.” Abu Bakr told them, “If he (Muhammad (S)) said that, then he is speaking the truth. I believe him concerning the news of the heavens -- that an angel descends to him from the heavens. How could I not believe he went to Jerusalem and came back in a short period of time -- when these are on earth?” From that moment onward, the Companion, Abu Bakr (RA), was called “as-Siddiq” -- because of how strongly he believed all what the Prophet (S) said. However, the truth manifested in two ways. First, the Prophet (S) described the caravans he had overtaken on the way home and said where they were and about when they might be expected to arrive in Makkah; and each arrived as predicted, and the details were as he had described. The disbelievers questioned the Prophet (S): “If you are truthful, then describe to us Masjid al-Aqsa and its surroundings.” They asked this because they knew Prophet Muhammad (S) had never been there before the previous night. Allah enabled His Messenger (S) to see Masjid al-Aqsa, and he described the masjid and its surroundings in exact detail. Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah (RA) that he heard Allah’s Messenger (S) saying, “When the people of Quraysh did not believe me (i.e. in the story of my Isra (night journey), I stood up in Al Hijr and Allah (SWT) displayed Jerusalem in front of me, and I began describing to them while I was looking at it.” [Bukhari] Moreover, the Prophet said, “On my way back, I saw some of your shepherds grazing their animals in a particular location. They were searching for a camel they had lost.” The Prophet (S) continued by giving the description of the camel. When these shepherds came back, they told their people what happened to them--precisely as

the Prophet had already told them. Those blasphemers in Makkah admitted that the Prophet’s (S) description was exact. And yet, they were still stubborn and rejected Islam. Unless God guides someone, even miracles are not enough to change one’s beliefs! It is worth noting here that the Prophet Muhammad’s (S) ‘Isra also fulfilled the prophetic tradition of the Book of Malachi [in the so-called Old Testament]: “Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before Me: And the Adonai (lord) whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to His temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the YHWH Sabaoth (Lord of the Hosts).” (3:1) The Adon mentioned here in the Book of Malachi is none but Muhammad (S) who came suddenly to visit God’s temple in Jerusalem and later punished the Levites for their arrogance and rejection of truth, as foretold in the verse number 3. [For details on this subject: the interested readers may like to read Rev. David Benjamin Keldani’s book - Muhammad in the Bible.] The Jewish Bible in its Book of Haggai does not fall behind this prediction either: “And I will shake all nations, and the Ahmad [Himdah] of all nations will come; and I will fill this house with glory, says the Lord of hosts.” [2:7] [Note: In the popular KJV of

the Bible, the Hebrew word Himdah or the Aramaic word Himada was translated as the “desire”. The Bible contains several such irresponsible editing/translations of names throughout its pages.] As I have noted elsewhere, the Prophet Muhammad’s (S) other name was Ahmad. So, it is not difficult to understand that the Prophet prophesied in the Books of Malachi and Haggai are none other than Prophet Muhammad (S) who was suddenly brought into Jerusalem by Archangel Gabriel (Jibril) (AS) to sanctify the Temple – Al Aqsa. This blessed journey of ‘Isra and Miraj is of great significance for Muslims for its miraculous nature and, among other things, for its establishment of the second crucial pillar in Islam: prayer five times a day. It is also important because it clearly shows Islam’s connection to and importance to Masjid Al-Aqsa, which is located in Jerusalem and is Islam’s third holiest mosque in Islam. In one Hadith, the Prophet (S) said: “Journeys should not be undertaken except to three

mosques: this my mosque (in Madinah), the Sacred Mosque (in Makkah), and AlAqsa mosque.” (Bukhari) ‘Isra and Miraj is celebrated in all Muslimmajority countries when devout Muslims offer extra prayers and feed the poor. Source:islamicity.org

Three people are dead and four others were rushed to hospital in critical condition after a helicopter crash north of Terrace, B.C., on Monday afternoon. Northern Escape Heli-Skiing confirmed the deaths in a statement Monday evening, saying the company wants to express its condolences to those affected by the crash. “The guests who ski with us and the staff who work with us each season are part of our family,” the company’s president John Forrest said. “It is impossible to put into words the profound grief that we feel and the sorrow that our guests and our staff

share. We hope you will respect the privacy of those impacted at this extremely difficult time.” B.C. Emergency Health Services said it was notified of the crash at about 4:15 p.m. PT, and paramedics were sent to the scene with three air ambulances and five ground ambulances. The four critically injured patients were taken to Mills Memorial Hospital in Terrace. Northern Health said a Code Orange was declared at the Terrace hospital to ensure enough staff and resources were available. “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of those involved. We also want to thank Mills Memorial staff and medi-

cal staff who responded quickly and compassionately to ensure the best possible care both for patients involved in the incident and for those whose needs were not related,” the health authority said in a written statement. David Jephson of Terrace Search and Rescue told CBC helped coordinate resources to bring the injured people to safety. He said the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria was also called to assist, along with

By: Justin Li · CBC News Applicants will soon need to show they have access to $20,635 instead of $10,000 Canada’s immigration minister on Thursday announced a slew of new requirements for foreign students wanting to come study in Canada. Starting next year, Marc Miller said prospective international students will need to show they have access to $20,635 instead of the $10,000 requirement that has been in place for two decades, in addition to paying for travel and tuition. The amount will be adjusted annually based on a Statistics Canada benchmark for living costs. Miller also announced the federal Liberals are extending an exemption that allowed current international students without an employment visa to work for more than the 20 hours each week off campus. He threatened to cap visas in provinces that don’t help house students or who won’t shut down educational institutions that he argues shouldn’t be operating. How will this affect current students and applicants? The new minimum financial requirements only apply to new study permit applications received on or after Jan. 1, 2024. • Is the $20K per year or a one-time thing? The requirement is a one-time thing. Under the current system, prospective students must show that they have $10,000 in addition to money for their first year’s tuition and travel expenses. Under the new system, the $10,000 is increased to $20,635. • Who is eligible to work more than 20 hours a week? Currently, any international student without an employment visa can work for more than 20 hours a week off campus. Tens of thousands of Ukrainians expected to come to Canada in the next few months

Canada has issued nearly 1 million temporary emergency visas to Ukrainians fleeing the war since March 2022. Settlement agencies are preparing for the arrival of tens of thousands of Ukrainians

before emergency visas for those fleeing the Russian invasion expire at the end of March. The federal government has issued 936,293 temporary emergency visas since March 2022 for Ukrainians who want to work or study in Canada while they wait out the war. A total of 210,178 people had actually made the journey to Canada as of Nov. 28. Up to 90,000 more emergency visa holders are thinking of coming before the deadline, pre-arrival surveys by Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada and Operation Ukraine Safe Haven suggest. That would be a considerable increase in the number of Ukrainian newcomers compared to past months, said Sarosh Rizvi, Operation Ukraine Safe Haven’s executive director. When Russia launched its full-scale inva-

sion of Ukraine in 2022, millions of people escaped the country in search of safety. Canada took the extraordinary approach of opening its doors to an unlimited number of Ukrainians and their families with a new emergency visa program. Compared to what’s in place for people who arrive as typical refugees, there were few fewer built-in supports to help the Ukrainian newcomers get on their feet. Instead, community members stepped up to donate clothes and furniture, businesses offered people jobs and some people even opened their homes. Now, as Ukraine approaches the second anniversary of the invasion, that groundswell of support has waned. “We don’t have the level of public interest

that we did two years ago,” Rizvi said in an interview Wednesday. Instead, the response has become more institutionalized, he said. That means the settlement sector is more prepared to respond now, but the expected influx will stretch its capacity. “I think every element is about to be tested,” from settlement staff to hotel capacity and even food banks, he said. The other challenge is finding people places to live, he said. “There’s no great response to that right now. It remains a need and it is still being dealt with on an individual-by-individual basis,” he said. The organization is encouraging people who choose to come before the deadline to consider settling in smaller communities where housing is easier to find and more affordable.. HE Supreme Court’s ecision stripping PTI of its electoral symbol casts another shadow on an already compromised pre-election phase. It undermines the rights of voters to vote for their preferred party by making the task of candidate identification considerably more difficult. By all accounts, it is a regressive decision which deepens Pakistan’s ongoing derailment of democracy. Even prior to the decision, no impartial observer would have considered the pre-election phase as fair or ‘level’. The crackdown on workers and candidates already prevents a serious election campaign from being mounted by one party. However, prior to the Supreme Court decision, there was a distinct possibility that the anonymity of the ballot box, along with clear candidacies in all constituencies, would allow for a proper electoral contest. That prospect, arguably, now stands irrevocably diminished. Recent polling by Gallup Pakistan shows that PML-N has closed both the voting intention gap and the leadership favourability gap in the all-important province of Punjab. PTI now carries just a two-point lead over the PMLN, narrowing down by 19 points since March 2023. The breakdown shows a near-even split in party preference across central, south, and west Punjab, with PTI commanding a large intention lead in north Punjab, which has 15 of the province’s 141 seats. Translating sample-based voting intention surveys that cover large regions into constituencybased outcomes is a tricky task. Support bases for parties can be spread out unevenly. Small opinion poll differences can still

o p i n i on

The wind vs the people?

lead to large differences in seats won based on where party supporters are located. However, this rapid closing of the gap needs to be explained.

In a lopsided playing field such as this one, what chance does an out-of-favourparty have?

Conventionally, parties can gain popularity if their time in office leads to material improvements, or their political narrative resonates with the population. The former is unlikely to be the case for the PML-N in the present. Energy and food inflation is still running rampant, and the unprecedented cost of living crisis that it presided over as part of the PDM coalition government is fresh in the memory of poor and middle-class households. Similarly, the party does not have much of a political narrative of defiance or democratic rights at the moment, either. That ship sailed after the samepage reboot of the last 20 or so months. Political observers across rural and peri-urban Punjab, instead, indicate that the closing of the popularity gap may have more to do with age-old ‘hawa’; ie, perception of establishment support, rather than any other factor. The ‘hawa’ is a frequently cited, though under-theorised aspect of Punjab’s electoral politics. At its simplest, it means the en masse alignment of undecided or unaligned voting blocs towards a party based on the expectation that it will be able to form the next government. This expectation is usually, though not always, tied to the idea that clear-cut backing

of the establishment is enough to see a party over the finish line in some form or the other. In 2013, the ‘hawa’ worked on the expectation that the establishment would not prevent an already popular party from forming the government. This allowed N to sweep Punjab at a scale greater than what many initially expected. The core societal form behind the ‘hawa’ are voting blocs in rural and peri-urban constituencies. As documented by Punjab scholars and observers for decades, parties and their candidates rely on middlemen to mobilise blocs of voters, rather than relying exclusively on direct, mass party connections. These vote blocs can be along the lines of caste/ biraderi, or village/neighbourhood associations, and are kept afloat through thana-katcheri access and piecemeal provision of basic infrastructure and services. Crucially, these blocs are how turnout is managed on election day. The importance of such middlemen rises and falls depending on the wider political context. In some elections, such as 2008, the national mood may be sufficient to sway voters, regardless of which way the wind is perceived to be blowing. But even then, their role in shaping turnout remains instrumental. The indication coming from field observers over the past couple of weeks is that these integral middlemen are consolidating support behind seasoned PML-N candidates. Direct and costly party-to-voter contact is absent. Instead, their candidates are busy meeting local blocs and offering favours and public

works projects as enticements. This is taking place alongside a continued crackdown on PTI candidates, who are being prevented from holding similar meetings. In a lopsided playing field such as this one, what chance does an out-of-favour party have? In other words, does the ‘hawa’ make the result a foregone conclusion? I would wager that despite all efforts of ‘curation’, ballot box dynamics always offer a sizable chance for throwing up surprises. In 2002, an incumbent (now court-certified) military dictator oversaw elections, in which blessings were showered on a hand-picked king’s party. Yet, the regime needed extensive polling day rigging, and significant floor crossing in the post-election phase, to produce an extremely thin majority in the National Assembly. In the current context, a close contest would need three things from the PTI: timely communication of candidate identities, the narrative-based mobilisation of unattached, party voters through social media, and a concerted election-day push for a higher turnout, especially in central Punjab. The last one in particular is key because lower turnout (through disillusionment or voter suppression) is likely to favour those parties that bring voters out through middlemen-led blocs. These elections are not taking place in 2002. The list of unknown variables — newly registered voters, social media influence, strength of and growth in party identity — is extensive. Such variables were in comparative infancy in 2018. And they may yet have a larger impact on this particular election. Courtesy By: Umair Javed

We know this is an important election year for the

U.S.,” Trudeau said. “We know there’s always challenges whenever there’s an American election. But as we have before, we’re going to be ready to deal with whatever gets tossed at us and make sure we’re defending Canadians’ interests and opportunities in this strong relationship.” Canada is not slated to have an election until fall 2025, assuming the government’s confidence and supply agreement with the NDP holds for the remainder of the term.

With Americans going to the polls on Nov. 5 to elect a president, Trudeau says that no matter who wins, the Canadian approach will be the same as with the first three presidents he’s worked with. “The Canadian approach is the same: standing up for Canadian values and interests, looking for win-win situations and demonstrating that we can and will work together to create prosperity right across the continent,” Trudeau said. Trump testimony in doubt as E Jean Carroll defamation lawsuit postponeders

The trial will be postponed for at least a day, but Trump’s lawyers have asked for it to resume on Wednesday, after the New Hampshire Republican primary. Writer E Jean Carroll’s civil defamation case against former US President Donald Trump, who was expected to testify, has been postponed after one of the jurors was sent home sick. US District Judge Lewis Kaplan said on Monday that one of the nine jurors reported feeling “nauseous and hot” and so was sent home. Trump’s lawyer, Alina Habba, also reported that at least one of her parents has COVID-19, and she exhibited symptoms of a fever in the last two days after having dinner with them several days ago.

New mosque construction in India’s Ayodhya to begin in May, Muslim group says

As Hindu devotees prepare to inaugurate a grand temple to one of their holiest deities, India’s Muslims plan to begin building a new mosque in the same city later this year, hoping to make a fresh start after a bloody, decades-long dispute. Haji Arfat Shaikh, the head of the development committee of the Indo-Islamic Cultural Foundation (IICF) that is overseeing the mosque project, said

this week that construction would begin in May, after the holy month of Ramazan, and the mosque would take three to four years to build. A Hindu mob destroyed a 16th century mosque in the northern Indian city of Ayodhya in 1992, triggering riots that killed about 2,000 people across India, most of them Muslims. India’s top court said in 2019 that the razing of the mosque was unlawful, but ruled that evidence showed there was a non-Islamic structure beneath it. It ordered that the site be given to Hindu groups to build a temple and Muslim community leaders be given land elsewhere in the city for constructing a mosque. While construction of the $180 million temple began within months and the first phase is set to open on Monday, Muslim groups have struggled to raise funds and begin work at a desolate site about 25 km (15 miles) away... Human rights advocates criticise Mohammad Ghobadlou’s conviction, saying he did not get a fair trial. Iran has executed a man who ran over and killed a policeman, and injured five other people, during nationwide protests in 2022. Mohammad Ghobadlou was executed on Tuesday, according to the judiciary’s Mizan news agency. However, human rights advocates criticised his conviction, saying he did not get a fair trial. “After being upheld by the Supreme Court, the death penalty against defendant Mohammad Ghobadlou has been implemented early this morning,” Mizan reported. The policeman was killed amid the huge protests that followed the death in police custody of Mahsa Amini, a Kurdish-Iranian woman who was arrested for violating Iran’s strict dress code for women. Ghobadlou was initially sentenced to death in November 2022 after being convicted of “corruption on earth” for attacking police in Tehran with a car.

The Supreme Court granted him a stay of execution in February 2023, and later ordered consideration of his mental health, according to Mehr news agency. Mizan reported on Tuesday that the Supreme Court had upheld the death sentence, which was carried out under Iran’s Islamic law of retribution. Hundreds died during the 2022 protests, including dozens of security personnel, and thousands were arrested over what officials labelled as foreign-instigated “riots”.

ISLAMABAD: The caretaker federal cabinet on Tuesday approved deployment of troops and civil armed forces personnel on polling stations and sensitive constituencies during Feb 8 general elections. Sources told Dawn the interior ministry had moved a summary to the cabinet, suggesting the deployment of the army as a quick response force to maintain peace and security, ensuring a smooth and transparent electoral process. The cabinet in its meeting, chaired by care-

kar, approved the summary, which okayed that army troops and civil armed forces to be deployed in sensitive areas will also serve as a rapid response force. In fact, the deployment of troops was demanded by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), citing shortage of 275,000 security officials, required for the election duty. The ECP had already written to the interior ministry mentioning a shortfall of 277,558 security officials needed to ensure safe and secure polling nationwide. According to information received by the ECP from the federal and provincial governments, there was a shortfall of 169,110 personnel in Punjab, 18,500 in Sindh, 56,717 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 13,769 in Balochistan and 4,500 in Islamabad. By: Simon Little, Global News Drivers with Uber, Lyft, DoorDash and Skip the Dishes rallied outside the Surrey office of B.C.’s labour minister on Tuesday to protest what they say are deteriorating working conditions and wages. Dozens of drivers gathered outside Harry Bans’ constituency office calling for improvements including a living wage, reliable

work and better working standards for people in the “gig work” industry. “Drivers are human, we are not machines,” Uber driver Kuljeet Singh told Global News. “We need transparency, we need benefits, we need all those things which regular people living here (have).” The B.C. government unveiled legislation late last year to bring gig workers under the Employment Standards Act. The legislation guarantees gig drivers 120 per cent of minimum wage during “engaged time” — that is, while carrying passengers — and compensation through WorkSafeBC.

Rideshare, delivery drivers stage protest outside B.C. labour minister’s office It also provides more protection for drivers being kicked off an app, and more transparency about rides before they accept the booking. But drivers say the changes don’t go far enough. Singh said the “engaged time” provision only covers about half of their time on the road, leaving them earning nothing between fares. “I deduct depreciation, then gas, then tax, then GST, I don’t have any benefits, I don’t have any vacation, I don’t have anything. So do you think it’s fair?” Singh said drivers also want more transparency from rideshare companies themselves about how much the company is collecting from passengers and how much of that is actually going to drivers. Drivers still have little or no protection from the companies they drive for if they’re deactivated over low ratings, he further argued. In a statement, Bains said the province re-

mains committed to working “as quickly as possible” to address concerns in the appbased economy, building on the policies unveiled last year. “Ministry staff continues to engage with all of the groups who will be affected by the changes, including app-based workers, companies, labour organizations and others. In fact, meetings with app-based ridehail and food-delivery workers are taking place this week,” he said. “These new standards and protections are coming after the regulations are finalized this spring, with some time allowed for companies to implement these important changes.” Singh, meanwhile, said drivers aren’t ruling out taking matters into their own hands. “We will go on strike 100 per cent,” he said. “We will shut down the whole airport area or Vancouver area.” Source: .globalnews.ca/

New changes will make family law work better for families

VANCOUVER - Changes coming into effect Monday, Jan. 15, 2024, will reduce some of the difficulties for families going through separation or divorce in B.C., including those with pets. British Columbians will also have the opportunity to provide input into further changes to make family law work better for families. Work is being done to update family law in phases. On Jan. 15, changes from the first phase concerning companion animals come into effect to better help people determine ownership and possession of companion animals following a separation or divorce. Public engagement also begins, allowing people to share their experiences with family law to help inform changes that will ensure that the health, safety and well-being of children continue to be at the centre of every deci-

sion. “Going through separation or divorce is already difficult for couples and children. Our justice system should be there to help, not make it harder,” said Premier David Eby. “These changes include putting the health, safety and well-being of kids at the centre of every decision and using the actual experiences of families in the system to improve it. The initial changes also recognize that pets are an important part of the family and allow a child’s relationship with a pet to be considered and respected. By making these reforms with input from people in B.C., we hope to make an already difficult time a bit less stressful for everyone involved.” The changes coming into effect improve the process for determining ownership and possession of companion animals following a separation or divorce. In the past, the factors that determined who kept companion animals after a relationship ended were the same as those for dividing other types of property. This change makes family law work better for today’s families by providing spouses and the court with more appropriate guidance during a separation or divorce. To better serve people and animals involved, determining factors now include: * each person’s ability and willingness to care for the animal; * the relationship a child has with the ani-

mal; and * if there are any risks of family violence or threats of cruelty to an animal. Spouses are encouraged to make their own agreements about companion animals, with options to jointly own, share possession or give one spouse exclusive ownership or possession of the pet. However, if spouses cannot come to an agreement, they can ask the court to decide. In such cases, the Supreme Court or the provincial court can make an order that one person has possession and ownership of a companion animal. Companion animals does not refer to service or guide dogs, or agricultural livestock. After a successful first phase of public engagement, additional updates to the Family Law Act are being explored to reflect changes in society and developments in case law. Government is seeking input from the public on several topics, such as: * family violence and protection orders; * parenting assessments and views of the child reports; and * time with and care of children. “We are committed to making family law work better for families,” said Niki Sharma, Attorney General. “Public engagement is a crucial step in this process and we encourage everyone to share their experiences to help inform changes to family law that will

ensure it reflects the changing needs and diversity of families today and tomorrow.” Three surveys are available that anyone can complete based on their experiences with family law. A fourth survey considers the topics through an Indigenous perspective, providing another option for Indigenous people, or those who support them in family law matters, to participate. A discussion paper is available for those interested in commenting on these topics in more detail. Public engagement will be open until March 31, 2024. Following this consultation, the ministry will report publicly on the findings, which will inform proposed amendments to the legislation. These changes are the next steps government is working on to continue working together will all partners throughout the province to ensure the justice system remains reflective of changing family needs. 12 injured as Myanmar military plane overshoots India runway Twelve people were injured on Tuesday when a Myanmar military plane overshot a runway while landing in India to collect soldiers who had fled armed insurgents fighting their country’s junta. The Chinese-made Shaanxi Y-8 turboprop skidded off the tarmac shortly before midday at Lengpui, the main airport of India’s Mizoram state. An Airport Authority of India (AAI) official at Lengpui told AFP that the flight was collecting 92 soldiers who had crossed into India from neighbouring Myanmar last week. Of the 12 injured, “four are stated to be serious,” added the official, who requested anonymity as they

were not authorised to speak to the media. Footage of the crash’s aftermath aired by local broadcasters showed the bent fuselage of the transport plane, which had cut a swath through tall grass after sliding down an embankment. The crash was caused by “sudden engine failure” while landing at the airport, Myanmar’s junta said in a statement. It said eight crew members were injured and receiving medical treatment, without giving details. The flight was supposed to return the final contingent of 276 Myanmar troops who had crossed into India last week to escape an advance by armed insurgents.

Clashes have rocked parts of Myanmar near the Indian border since the Arakan Army (AA) attacked security forces in November, ending a ceasefire that had largely held since a 2021 military coup. But this month the group said it had taken over the major town of Paletwa and six military bases along the border of Mizoram. Race to find dozens trapped in southwest China landslide

Rescuers raced on Tuesday to find dozens of people still trapped after a landslide struck a remote and mountainous part of southwestern China, killing 12. The pre-dawn landslide buried 18 homes and sparked the evacuation of more than 200 people when it struck in Zhenxiong County, Yunnan province early on Monday.

More than 24 hours since the disaster, state news agency Xinhua said rescue workers are now in a “race against time” to find those still missing, after a night of sub-zero temperatures. “Search and rescue efforts persisted through the night,” firefighter Li Shenglong told Xinhua. Twelve people have been confirmed dead, state broadcaster CCTV reported just after midday. Wu Junyao, director of the natural resources and planning bureau of Zhaotong, told Xinhua that the disaster “resulted from a collapse in the steep cliff area atop the slope”. Two hundred rescue workers have been dis-

patched to the scene as well as dozens of fire engines and other equipment. The site is covered in thick snow and rescuers are “using all kinds of tools to search for survivors”, Xinhua reported. Wu told Xinhua the rescuers are digging through collapsed debris of “100 meters in width, 60 metres in height, with an average thickness of around 6 meters”. CCTV showed footage of rescue workers digging through twisted metal and concrete overnight in a bid to find survivors. Other CCTV footage showed locals huddling for warmth around a fire in a shelter, eating instant noodles. People from the surrounding area have chipped into to help with relief efforts, state media said. “Our village is nearby,” Hong Jie, 38, told Xinhua. “Our main focus is on distributing supplies, cooking, and delivering food to those in need.” ‘All-out efforts’ Chinese President Xi Jin-

ping has ordered “all-out” rescue efforts. Landslides are common in Yunnan, a farflung and largely impoverished region of China where steep mountain ranges butt against the Himalayan plateau. Monday’s disaster occurred in a rural area surrounded by towering peaks dusted with snow, state media footage showed. There was no immediate official explanation for what may have caused the landslide. Efforts to establish what happened are underway, Xinhua reported. China has experienced a string of natural disasters in recent months, some following extreme weather events such as sudden, heavy downpours. Rainstorms last September in the southern region of Guangxi triggered a mountain landslide that killed at least seven people, according to media reports. In August, heavy rains sparked a similar disaster near the northern city of Xi’an, killing more than 20 people. Source: dawn.com

OIC denounces opening of Ram Mandir on site of demolished Babri Masjid in India’s Ayodhya The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Tuesday denounced the construction and inauguration of the ‘Ram Mandir’ built on the site of the five-century-old Babri Masjid in India’s Ayodhya. At a grand event attended by some seven thousand guests a day earlier, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi consecrated the idol of Lord Ram at the new temple built on the site where the Babri Masjid stood for centuries before it was demolished by a Hindutva mob in 1992. The demolition had triggered the worst religious riots in India since independence — killing 2,000 people, most of them Muslims — and shook the foundations of the country’s officially secular political order. But for Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party

(BJP), the opening of the Ram Mandir was a landmark moment in a decades-long campaign to align the country’s governance with its majority faith. Pakistan condemned the grand celebrations and described the temple’s inauguration as a “symbol of growing majoritarianism and an affront to the Muslim community in India”. The developments of the last 31 years in India, leading to the consecration ceremony, are “indicative of growing majoritarianism in India”, the Foreign Office (FO) had said in a statement. Calling the new temple “a blot on the face of India’s democracy”, the FO had also expressed concerns over the future of other mosques in the country, including the Gyanvapi Mosque in Varanasi and the Shahi Eidgah Mosque in Mathura that are also fac-

ing threats of desecration and destruction. The inauguration was also met with criticism in India, levelled by opposition parties over turning the event into a grand spectacle and the “statesponsored assault” on the pan-India peace march headed by Congress’ Rahul Gandhi in the BJP-ruled Assam state. In a press release issued today, the OIC — a 57-member bloc of Muslim countries — expressed “grave worry” over the construction and inauguration of the temple at the site of the razed Babri Masjid.

“In line with the OIC position expressed by the Council of Foreign Ministers in its previous sessions, the General Secretariat denounces these actions aimed at obliterating the Islamic landmarks represented by the Babri Mosque, which has stood tall in the exact location for five centuries,” it said. Federal Court finds Emergencies Act for ‘Freedom Convoy’ violated Charter By Touria Izri, David Baxter & Alex Boutilier Global News The Federal Court has ruled the Trudeau government’s decision to invoke the Emergencies Act during the so-called “Freedom Convoy” that descended on Ottawa in 2022 violated the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. In his ruling, Justice Richard G. Mosley said the move was “unreasonable” and outside the scope of the law. Canada added just 167 medical residencies in 10 years, while the population has grown by 5 million. Canada is going through an unprecedented growth spurt, having added well over a million people last year after a similarly historic intake in 2022. Some economists have argued this recordsetting surge could be a boon to an economy heavily dependent on immigration. A recent Desjardins report cautioned the federal government against slamming the door on non-permanent residents like students and temporary workers, who make up most of the recent newcomers. But this breakneck pace is bringing with it some major growing pains — particularly in a health-care sector perpetually starved for resources. The country isn’t producing nearly enough homegrown primary care doctors to keep up with the country’s health

practitioner has spiked from 4.5 million in 2019 to an estimated 6.5 million in 2023. That means millions of Canadians don’t have face-time with a primary care physician who can help ensure longer life expectancy, prevent hospitalizations and premature deaths, foster better health outcomes and improve quality of life. That lack of access has consequences. Unscheduled emergency room visits jumped from about 14 million in 2021-22 to 15.1 million in 2022-23, according to Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) data. The number of people entering a residency — the post-graduate training required in order to be licensed to practice medicine in Canada — may explain why so many people are struggling to get the primary care they need. A CBC News review of medical school data shows the number of medical residents has been stagnant for the past decade — a

Canada’s population is booming — access to family doctors hasn’t kept pace needs, said Dr. Kathleen Ross, a B.C. family doctor and president of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA). “The truth is our health-care system is on its knees. We’re not meeting the needs of the population. Our workers are burning out in droves,” Ross told CBC News. “There are definitely not enough physicians working and training. We need to train more. We are simply not keeping up with the demand and with the number of people who are retiring.” Many Canadians were struggling to find a family doctor already when the federal government allowed the number of new arrivals to increase so dramatically. While Ottawa sets limits on the number of permanent residents, other demand-driven streams — like international students — are not capped. Data from the OurCare initiative suggests the number of Canadians without regular access to a family doctor or nurse

In 2014, 3,255 people entered postgraduate medical training, according to data from the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS). It is often added to other drugs because of its extreme potency, which makes drugs cheaper, more powerful, more addictive, and more dangerous.

Why it’s Important for Kids to Spend Time With Grandparents ism in young people.

No One Nurtures Happiness Like a Grandparent

F

ortunate are the children who have active grandparents in their lives. Spending time with grandparents is enriching to youth in so many ways, physically, emotionally, mentally, and socially. A weekend at grandma and grandpa’s house? Bye, kids! You’ll be missed, but this is really for everyone’s own good. Here are 14 amazing benefits of grandparents being in their grandchildren’s lives.

Grandparents have an uncanny ability to make their grandchildren smile on demand. Parents, especially those with younger children, may quite frequently be running on empty, desperate for a shower, a snack that does not include goldfish crackers or five minutes of absolute silence. When the grandparents do not live in the same home as their grandchildren, spending time together may feel extra special for both parties. Grandparents may also be retired and have more energy and patience when playing with younger children, plus parents get a much-needed breather. Quality time with the grandparents is a joyous win for everybody.

Grandparents Enhance Prosocial Behaviors

Raising emotionally, well-adjusted children is the goal of all parents, and it can be argued that to do this, you need Grandma and Grandpa by your side. Researchers in the United Kingdom found that children who spent more time with their grandparents were at a decreased risk for having emotional and behavioral issues, and were far better off in terms of their emotional intelligence, compared to children who did not have grandparents involved in their lives. The study highlighted that this is particularly true for adolescences from divorced or separated families. If you want happy children who are better able to process emotions, invite grandpa over for a snack.

produce a sweet-natured kid who kicks butt in school? Grandparents’ financial and emotional support was shown to increase their grandchild’s prosocial behavior,as well as their school engagement, even with a follow-up a year later. This study focused on 10- to 14-yearolds residing in both single and two-parent families. Regardless of the type of family, grandparent involvement led to an increase in kind, empathetic behavior. An adolescent who is considerate toward others and happily engaged in school? Now that is reason to celebrate!

Spending Time With Grandparents Can Increase Happiness

Hanging With Grandma The power of true connection! Strong grandparent-grandchild Can Reduce Ageism

Ageism is a real thing, and it’s not good. It isn’t acceptable to harbor ill feelings toward any human being without a true cause, and this includes neglecting or avoiding the elderly simply because of their age. Studies have shown that children as young as age three exhibit negative attitudes towards older people. Spending time with grandparents can greatly reduce attitudes of age-

relationships can impact depressive symptoms in children and the elderly alike. A close relationship between grandparents and grandchildren has been linked to a decrease in symptoms of depression for both generations. Grandparents in the study were found to be less depressed when they received or gave tangible help to their grandchildren. Anything from rides to the store, advice on

life, or financial assistance were contributors to the lessened depressive symptoms found in older adults. Go ahead and ask grandma for a ride to the store or for some friendship advice. It is clearly good for her mental health.

PAKISTAN ELEC

O

nce dubbed the establishment’s “blue-eyed boy”, former prime minister Imran Khan finds himself on the sidelines, with his nomination papers for 2024 elections rejected, and his party in tatters. Born in Lahore in 1952, Imran first rose to fame as a cricketer, leading the national side to its only ODI World Cup victory in 1992. Following his retirement from the sport, in addition to ramping up his philanthropic activities, he founded the PTI in 1996 but only saw limited political success till 2011, when he started gaining the attention of youth disillusioned by massive corruption and an unemployment crisis.

I

t is not just major politicians who will be contesting in the upcoming elections with their younger family members.

Political parties in Pakistan are often accused of being family-owned enterprises, with several members of a singular, influential family or tribe often capturing blocks of seats to bolster their hold in the corridors of elected power. Unwilling to allow externals to grab a share of their political patronage - even if at

Imran Khan — out of sight but not out of mind

Following the 2013 elections, Imran alleged widespread rigging, leading a months-long sit-in in Islamabad in protest, but called it off after the deadly attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar. Imran’s popularity continued to rise ahead of the 2018 elections, so much so that he was dubbed the “prime minister in waiting” albeit with some help from powerful quarters. Following a controversial victory in the general elections, he formed a coalition government and took oath as the country’s 22nd prime minister on August 18, 2018. Historic ouster and the blame game Elected on promises to ensure accountability and create a social welfare state, Imran soon found himself beset by serious challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic, unprecedented inflation, rising deficits as well as differences with his own allies. His relations with the establishment, which his rivals claimed had brought him into power, also soured, with a standoff between

the government and the military leadership over the appointment of the new spymaster in October 2021. To oust him from power, opposition parties joined forces and launched the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) which soon tabled a no-confidence bill. After some of his party members dissented during the crucial vote against him, Imran’s premiership came to an end shortly after the clock struck midnight on April 10, 2022. Subsequently, Imran directed his party members to resign from their seats in the National Assembly and announced the dissolution of the provincial assemblies of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in a bid to force the ruling PDM coalition to hold early elections — a tactic that did not bear any fruit. Increasingly frustrated, Imran lashed out at the US and former army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa, accusing them to conspire against him. In the months following his removal

from office, the former PTI chief managed to evade arrest several times in a slew of cases, including the Toshakhana case, in which he was accused of illegally selling state gifts. In October 2022, Imran launched a long march to Islamabad for Haqeeqi Azadi (true freedom), heavily criticising Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Chief Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum and calling for the resignation of two other intelligence officials. On November 3 of that year, as the PTI’s convoy reached Wazirabad, an assassination attempt was made on the party chief, who suffered multiple bullet injuries in his leg. The then-PTI chief called off the march later, claiming he did so to avoid “imminent bloodshed”. Imran continued to up his ante in 2023, doubling down on his claims that a serving intelligence official was behind the attempt on his life and Bajwa, who he dubbed “super king”, was solely responsible for his ouster. times brothers - fathers and sons or fathers and daughters may adopt diametrically opposing political views or even directly support political rivals and contest against each other - entrenched political leaders have decided to turn to their upcoming generation as a means to tap into a demographic that is fast changing the electoral landscape of the country: the youth. The Bhutto and Sharif families are famously criticised for promoting dynastic politics.

Among the Bhuttos, who have seen their family members elected as the country’s prime minister across two generations, are hoping to make a hat trick with third-generational prime ministerial hopeful in Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. Bilwal’s father and former president, Asif Ali Zardari, is also expected to contest polls. However, the upcoming polls may see the entrance of another close family member into politics in the form of Aseefa Bhutto. Party of Pakistan’s Ex-PM Nawaz Sharif launches election campaign

By Asif Shahzad

ISLAMABAD, Jan 15 (Reuters) - The party of Pakistan’s former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, considered the front-runner to win upcoming general elections, launched its campaign on Monday amid accusations that the military’s support is already giving him an edge over rivals. The campaign for the Feb. 8 polls, delayed since November, looks set to fire up a lukewarm race so far amid an uncertain political environment after Sharif ’s main rival and jailed former premier Imran Khan’s party is facing what is considered a military-backed crackdown. Sharif ’s daughter Maryam Nawaz, who is also considered his political heir, started the party’s campaign at a rally in

f successful, PPP leader could become the president for the second time. Asif Ali Zardari was born in 1955 to a well-known Baloch family from Nawabshah, Sindh. He married Benazir Bhutto, who later became Pakistan’s first female prime minister, in 1987. Zardari’s initiation into politics was not very successful but his career began to take off after his marriage to Benazir. In both her governments, he was appointed federal minister — first with the portfolio of environment and later with that of investment. In 1990, he was accused of tying a bomb to a businessman’s leg and sending him into a bank to withdraw cash from

the eastern city of Okara in Punjab province. “The more you vote for us the more you will see your household expenses going down,” she said amid inflation that has been hovering around 30% in recent months. Sharif, who returned from self-exile in London late last year, has pledged to rebuild the country’s $350 billion economy, which is battling high inflation, an unstable currency and low foreign exchange reserves, despite averting a debt default with an IMF bailout last summer. Analysts believe the South Asian nation’s powerful military has thrown its backing to Sharif, 74, after it was locked in a standoff with former cricket star Khan, 71. That gives Sharif an edge in a country where army generals exert undue influence

over establishing governments. The military denies the accusations, and says it remains apolitical. Major players such as the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) of late prime minister Benazir Bhutto have already begun campaigns, but these have been muted compared to past polls. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has started its campaign late, while Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) says it is not being allowed rallies by the authorities. Khan’s PTI, which analysts and political opponents say won the 2018 elections with the military’s support, is facing state-backed efforts to block candidates on legal and technical grounds. Sharif, elected prime minister in 1990, 1997,

his account as a pay-off. The charge was never proven and Zardari was released after spending three years in prison. In 1996, after the dismissal of Benazir’s second government, Zardari was arrested and charged with several offences, including the murder of his brother-in-law, Murtaza Bhutto. He remained in prison for eight years and was released on bail in 2004, which was followed by his acquittal four years later. Following his release, Zardari kept a low profile but returned to Pakistan in December 2007 after Benazir’s assassination. After the PPP’s victory in the 2008 elections, Zardari was elected as the president. During his term, the government launched the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), Aghaz-i-Huqooq-i-Balochistan package, and managed to forge a consensus for the seventh National Finance Corporation award. Moreover, with the approval of the 18th Amendment, Zardari surrendered the president’s power to dissolve Parliament.

Throughout his political career, Zardari has faced allegations of misconduct and corruption although nothing has been proven in courts. When Benazir was prime minister, he was labelled ‘Mr 10%’ over allegations that he received kickbacks and stole from the state’s coffers. However, he is also known for having a shrewd political mind — a testament of which came when on September 8, 2013 he became the country’s first president to complete his constitutional term and hand over duties to another democratically elected president. In recent years, Zardari has faced a slew of cases, including the Thatta Water Supply reference and the Park Lane reference, in which he remained in jail for six months before being granted bail by the Islamabad High Court on medical grounds in December 2019. The former president maintained a low profile during the pandemic because of health issues. He became active in politics again

and 2013, has blamed his 2017 ouster and subsequent corruption convictions on the military, with which he had fallen out. Source: dawn.com/

Asif Ali Zardari — dealmaker extraordinaire

as the Pakistan Democratic Movement — a coalition of opposition parties — began to take shape. He has participated vigorously in the PPP’s election campaign, setting up committees to woo electables and convincing several leaders from other parties to join the PPP. He is the party’s nominee for president in the upcoming polls. An op-ed published in Dawn last year stated: “Asif Ali Zardari is undoubtedly one of the shrewdest political figures in the country. Past master in the art of political wheeling and dealing, he has managed to maintain the party’s role as a major player in the power game, despite its eroding national status.” Meanwhile, Zardari has said he believes no single party will be able to win a two-thirds majority in the elections, and a “national unity government” will be formed that will not be led by the PML-N.
