Citing a raft of deep systemic failures, human rights group B’Tselem has announced that it will no longer cooperate with Israel’s military law enforcement system. For the past 25 years, B’Tselem, which documents Israeli human rights violations in the occupied Palestinian territories, has served as a “subcontractor” for the system by submitting complaints about soldiers’ alleged misconduct, gathering relevant documents and evidence, and requesting updates for affected Palestinian families. While the goal was to help to bring justice to Palestinian victims and deter future misconduct, the reality has been the opposite, B’Tselem said in a scathing report released on Wednesday. “B’Tselem’s cooperation with the military investigation and enforcement system has not achieved justice, instead lending legitimacy to the occupation regime and aiding to whitewash it,” the report noted. “B’Tselem will no longer play a part in the pretence posed by the military law enforcement system and will no longer refer complaints to it ... The fight for human rights will be better served by denouncing this system and exposing it for what it is.” The report details a number of cases in which Palestinians have been killed or injured by Israeli soldiers under questionable circumstances, but after a series of apparent investigative failures, no one was held accountable. In one example, Wadi Samarah, 15, was fatally shot in the Continued on Pg 2 back of the neck by an Israeli soldier

The Komagata Maru steamship carrying 376 passengers mostly the Sikhs reached Canada’s West Coast on May 23, 1914, anchoring in Vancouver’s coal harbour. Beyond doubt Sikhs are well known for their hard work and fighting skills. Some of those who fought for the British (WW I) were trying to claim the right to land in Canada despite the absence of any favourable legal provisions. Obviously, that was a direct challenge to Canada’s discriminatory immigration rules at the time. The immigration officials refused to let the boat people step on the Canadian soil. The ship, however, ended up bbeing escorted out to sea for returning to Calcutta. Approximately 20 passengers lost their lives while clashing with ppolice on the Indian soil. Unlike the recent (government-sponsored) heavy influx of genuine refugees from Syria, the East Indian passengers attempted an illegal entry into Canada. Not more than twenty passengers were N ppermitted entry as permanent residents. Those Sikhs hadn’t faced any genocide like environment back in India; they were simply opportunists trying to find a better economic life in Canada. Nevertheless, they were denied entry because of gross illegality on their part. Quite shockingly, there was a great deal of discrimination at play as well.

E D I T O R I A L

The long overdue legislated apology: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has formally apologized in the House of Commons as passengers went through a highly painful experience, denied entry to Canada and were forced to return to violent fate in India. “First and foremost, to the victims of the incident, no words can erase the pain and suffering they experienced,” Trudeau said. “Regrettably, the passage of time means that none are alive to hear our apology today, still, we offer it, fully and sincerely, for our indifference to your plight, for our failure to recognize all that you had to offer.”For the laws that discriminated against you so senselessly, and for not apologizing sooner. For all these things, we are truly sorry.” Trudeau said. He also apologized directly to the passengers’ descendants, some of whom, he noted, were gathered in the House of Commons visitors’ gallery to hear the apology. “We can never know what your lives would have been like had your relatives been welcome to Canada,” Trudeau said. “The ways in which your lives would have been different, the ways in which Canada would have been enriched. Those possibilities are lost to history, for that, and to you, we apologize.” The prime minister said Canada must now commit itself to positive action,

to learning from mistakes and to make sure that we never repeat the errors of the past. Trudeau ended his remarks with a tip of the hat to his Sikh Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan, who Trudeau said worked hard to bring the Komagata Maru incident to national attention. The prime minister noted that before entering politics Sajjan was the commanding officer of the British Columbia Regiment Duke of Connaught’s Own, the regiment that forced the British Komagata Maru out of Canada in 1914. “The minister’s family might well have been turned away from Canada, today the minister is an essential member of this government and sits here in this House,” Trudeau said. NDP Leader Tom Mulcair also rose in the House to offer his apologies, beginning by echoing remarks by Ambrose when she noted Harper’s earlier efforts to express regret for the incident. “Now here in this House today, we are making that act official, this act of contrition, from all Canadians for this historic tragedy,” he said in French. “It was racism pure and simple that put our fellow human beings at such risk,” Mulcair said. “It was a horrific chapter in the history of a country that has come to recognize diversity and tolerance as great strengths.”

Better late than never: Surely, the legislated apology is a welcome step as it has fulfilled the long standing demand of the people of India including Canadians of Indian origin. Excellent: Sikhs are finally successful in extracting an apology through Canadian parliament for an incident that happened more than 100 years ago. Does anybody know if there was any apology to the families of those who lost lives due to Air India tragedy? Conveniently overlooked: The militant Sikhs blew up a jumbo jet (Air India flight 182) while in flight from Toronto to India with 329 passengers onboard; 268 passengers of the ill fated flight were Canadians. Question: Would the government address this historic wrong within the century? Conclusion: In the modern time, the elected leaders must acknowledge that the world has changed for the better; they must accept accountability and be apologetic for all mistakes regardless of their age or magnitude. We are proud that Canada under the leadership of Justin Trudeau has set an example of superior form of humanitarianism on the planet. That should take care of the racism, as all are equal. in the occupied West Bank town of Jenin in September 2007. Samarah, who was targeted as he ran from a group of youths who had been throwing stones at military vehicles, was given no prior warning before the rubber-coated steel bullet was fired towards his head, according to witness accounts. However, the case was closed for “lack of sufficient evidence” in early 2014, more than six years after Samarah’s death. This case is by no means unique. Since the start of the second Intifada in 2000, B’Tselem has requested investigations into 739 cases in which soldiers killed or injured Palestinians, used them as human shields, or damaged their property. In 25 percent of these cases, no investigation was ever launched. In nearly half, or 343 cases, an investigation was launched but subsequently closed with no action taken. More than 100 cases are still under processing, but in all of those that have gone through the system, charges were laid in just 25, with another 13 referred for disciplinary action. These outcomes are the result of incompetent investigations that fail

to get at the truth, with few efforts made to collect external evidence or challenge soldiers’ statements, B’Tselem said. “The military law enforcement system is plagued by a host of issues in the basic way it is run: The system is inaccessible to Palestinian complainants, who cannot file complaints with the MPIU [Military Police Investigations Unit] directly and must rely on human rights organisations or attorneys to file the complaints on their behalf,” the report found. Obtaining updates about cases in the system is also fraught with difficulties, as the Military Advocate General Corps operates under a blanket of secrecy, B’Tselem said: “Any attempt to obtain information from them requires repeated communications and in many cases, the information that is ultimately provided is incomplete.” Asked about B’Tselem’s announcement, an Israeli army spokesperson maintained that the military justice system is “an independent and professional entity”, noting any complaints submitted via this system are probed and, when warranted, an investigation is launched. The

criticisms cited by B’Tselem, however, have been echoed by other organisations, including the Adalah legal centre, which advocates for the rights of Palestinians in Israel and the occupied territories. “Our experience engaging with Israel’s investigatory mechanisms for many years shows that these mechanisms do not comply with the international standards of independence, impartiality, effectiveness, promptness and transparency,” Adalah lawyer Nadeem Shehadeh told Al Jazeera. Among the key criticisms of Israel’s military law enforcement system is its failure to probe the legality or rationale of the directives underlying soldiers’ actions, with investigations focusing narrowly on the conduct of implicated soldiers. In 2014, after Israeli soldiers fatally shot 14-yearold Yusef al-Shawamreh for breaking through Israel’s separation fence to access his family’s farmland, the case was swiftly closed with no charges laid. B’Tselem pointed to numerous deficiencies in the investigative process, including a failure to examine the “appalling logic” of the military’s apparent plan to lie

in ambush for Palestinians breaking through the barrier and to deliberately harm them as a deterrent to others. On average, in a sample of cases between 2000 and 2011, B’Tselem found that it took four years from the time of the incident to the conclusion of processing the case. In the event that charges are ultimately laid, “this will happen long after the incident, when the witnesses’ memory of events has grown dimmer and the evidence has disappeared”, impeding the possibility of a fair trial. The semblance of a functioning justice system allows Israeli officials to deny claims that Israel does not enforce the law on soldiers who harm Palestinians, B’Tselem said, noting it would no longer prop up a system “whose real function is measured by its ability to continue to successfully cover up unlawful acts and protect perpetrators”. B’Tselem spokesperson Sarit Michaeli told Al Jazeera that while Palestinians would still have other options for mediating their cases, this action would help to draw public attention to the system’s severe flaws.Source: Al-Jazeera

The Afghan Taliban picked a top cleric, Maulvi Haibatullah Akhundzada, as their new chief in a swift power transition after officially confirming the death of Mullah Akhtar Mansoor in a US drone strike in a border region between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Maulvi Haibatullah, who was previously one of Mansoor’s deputies, is seen as a unifying figure in the militant movement, though it remains unclear whether he will follow his predecessor in shunning peace talks with the Afghan government. “Maulvi Haibatullah Akhundzada has been unanimously appointed as the new Amirul Momineen (leader of the faithful) by the Rahbari Shura (leadership council) of the Islamic Emirate. All the Shura members, religious scholars, teachers and jihadis swore allegiance to him,” the Taliban said in a Pashto-language statement emailed to The Express Tribune.

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif in a meeting with United States (US) Ambassador to Pakistan David Hale on Wednesday expressed serious concerns over the US drone strike in Balochistan in which Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Akhtar Mansour was reportedly killed. The Army chief said the drone attack, which was a violation of sovereignty, was detrimental to Pak-US ties and regional stability and damaged peace efforts, an Inter-Services Public Relations statement said. The COAS said Pakistan’s efforts, successes and sacrifices in the fight against terrorism are unparalleled. The US drone strike was the first-ever in Balochistan, which has long been a ‘red line’ for Pakistan. While the government has long condemned drone strikes, terming them a violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty, it had already conveyed a set of ‘red lines’ to the US in 2010, specifically mentioning attacks in Balochistan as a no-go area. Hale called on the Army chief at General Headquarters. The situation arising after the US drone strike in Balochistan came under discussion during the meeting. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif criticised the US drone strike

It added that Sirajuddin Haqqani, the head of the Haqqani network, and Mullah Yaqoob, the son of Taliban founder Mullah Omar, were appointed his deputies. Analysts had previously seen them as the most likely candidates for the leadership. The Shura confirmed that Mullah Mansoor was killed in a US drone attack near the Registan area of the Afghan province of Kandahar and Naushki district of Balochistan. A Taliban leader disclosed that two wives and one daughter of Mansoor were also killed in the strike. The leadership council paid homage to the slain leader and offered condolences to all Taliban leaders, foot soldiers and the bereaved family in particular over the ‘martyrdom of the Amirul Momineen’. The Shura, however, reassured the Taliban that Mansoor’s death would not dent the movement and they would continue their ‘sacred struggle’ under the new leader. “Islamic nations have always faced such hardships but their resolve remained unshaken,” says the statement. “Shaheed Amirul Momineen was a servant of Allah Almighty and a Mujahid (holy fighter). In a very short period, he set a lofty example of strong determination, faith, and high morale. All the Muslims, particularly the mujahideen, will be proud of it,” it added.“He [Mansoor] did not succumb to pressure, threats or demands from the arrogant global power,” the statement said referring to the United States which has been fighting the Taliban since 2001. “He did not accept any imposed processes and dictations, and internal and external conspiracies could not shake his determination.”Source :Express Tribune

on Sunday, describing d it as a violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty. A strong protest has also been lodged with the US over the attack. Mansour was reported killed in Pakistan on Saturday when his vehicle was struck by a US drone in Balochistan, believed to be the first time a Taliban leader was killed in such a way inside Pakistani territory. The US and Afghan governments said Mansour had been an obstacle to a peace process that had ground to a halt when he refused to participate in peace talks earlier this year. Instead, he intensified the war in Afghanistan, now in its 15th year. On Tuesday, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said that the government cannot confirm yet that the person killed in the incident in Balochistan was Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Mansour. Rejecting the argument that Mullah Akhtar Mansour was the major hurdle in talks between the Afghan Taliban and Kabul, he said said that the Murree dialogue could not have taken place if he had acted as a spoiler. More than a third M hi of Canadian homeowners polled in a recent survey say they were caught short at least once in the past year without enough money to cover their expenses. According to Manulife Bank of Canada’s spring debt survey, four per cent of respondents said they found themselves in that situation almost every month, while 10 per cent said it happened to them a few times in the past 12 months. Another 23 per cent said it happened once or twice in the past year. The remaining 63 per cent of the survey respondents said they had never been caught without enough money in their bank account to pay their bills. The survey also found that the average mortgage debt carried by respondents was $181,000. That is up from an average of $175,000 reported in a similar poll by Manulife last autumn. Those debt loads varied by city, with the average mortgage debt among respondents highest in Vancouver, with an average of $259,000. In Calgary and Edmonton, the average mortgage debt was $217,000, while it stood at $194,000 in Toronto, Manulife said. “That’s consistent with other data that we’ve seen showing that mortgage credit

growth continues to push up total household debt,” said Frances Donald, senior economist at Manulife Asset Management. Donald sees two big reasons for that rise in mortgage debt. First is the low interest rate environment in Canada now. “That’s affecting every Canadian across every province,” she said. The second reason she sees is rising house prices in some cities, particularly in Vancouver and Toronto. “This is not as specific to the entire country, but it is contributing to why we see higher debt levels in places where house prices have been growing more quickly.” Rick Lunny, chief executive of Manulife Bank of Canada, said a significant portion on respondents indicated they are not planning for their retirement, but are hoping to spend what they’ve made on their home to fund their post-work life. The poll surveyed 2,373 Canadian homeowners in all provinces between ages 20 to 59 with household income of $50,000 or more. The survey was conducted online by Environics Research between Feb. 3 and Feb. 20, 2016. National results were weighted by province, income and age. Source: CBC News

Almost half of the European Union member states have flouted an EU-wide suspension on arms transfers to Egypt, risking complicity in a wave of unlawful killings, enforced disappearances and torture, according to Amnesty International. Despite the suspension imposed after more than 600 anti-coup protesters were killed by security forces in Cairo in August 2013, 12 EU members, including Bulgaria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK remain among Egypt’s main suppliers of arms and policing equipment, the human rights group said in a statement on Wednesday. In 2014 alone, EU states authorised 290 licences for military equipment to Egypt, totalling more than $6.77bn, the group said. The items that have been sold to Egypt by the EU states through exports and brokering have included: small arms, light weapons and ammunition; armoured vehicles; military helicopters; heavier weapons for use in counterterrorism and military operations, and surveillance technology. “Almost three years on from the mass killings that led the

EU to call on its member states to halt arms transfers to Egypt, the human rights situation has actually deteriorated,” said Magdalena Mughrabi, interim deputy Middle East and North Africa programme director at Amnesty International. In 2015 alone, rights groups recorded more than 1,250 forced disappearances and 267 alleged extrajudicial killings, in addition to 40,000 political prisoners. “We would like to see an embargo on all items that are used by the internal security forces in these sorts of serious violations,” Brian Wood, head of arms control and human rights at Amnesty International, told Al Jazeera. “We want perpetrators to be brought to justice because you cannot have a secure country without respect for human rights and the rule of law,” Wood said. “The Egyptian government is on a completely wrong course.” He added that EU foreign ministers are due to review their position on Egypt in the coming weeks, and that Amnesty International hopes they will then strengthen the arms embargo. United States President Barack Obama has said that the Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mansoor was killed in a US strike. In a statement on Monday, he called Mansoor’s death an “important milestone”. “We have removed the leader of an organisation that has continued to plot against and unleash attacks on American and Coalition forces, to wage war with the Afghan people, and align itself with extremist groups like alQaeda,” he said. Afghanistan’s Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah said on Twitter a day earlier that Mansoor was dead, the country’s spy agency also said he had been killed and a source close to Mansoor told Al Jazeera he believed the reports to be true. The Taliban has not yet issued an official statement, though some of the group’s officials ear-

lier denied the reports. PROFILE: Mullah Akhtar Mansoor Obama, who authorised the attack, was in Vietnam for his first state visit when the statement was issued. Speaking at a news conference following his meeting with Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang, Obama said the fatal attack on Mansoor did not represent a change in US military strategy in Afghanistan, which is to help train Afghan forces. Obama ended the US combat mission in Afghanistan in 2014. “We are not re-entering the day-to-day combat operations that are currently being conducted by Afghan security forces,” Obama said. “Our job is to help Afghanistan secure its own country, not to have our men and women in uniform engage in that fight for them.” . Ash and soot from the Fort McMurray wildfire has drifted all the way to Europe and could speed the melting of Greenland’s ice sheet, says a fire ecologist. NASA satellite images, captured earlier this week, show blue streaks — representing dust and soot in the atmosphere — swirling over Spain and the U.K. Although the hazy conditions are quite mild in Europe, fire ecologist Robert Gray said fallout from the fire could be of greater concern for Greenland. The massive plume from the fire could leave large swaths of Greenland’s 1,710,000 square kilometre ice sheet at risk of increased melting. The landscape of ice, which is already at risk from rising global temperatures, is more vulnerable to melting if it becomes darkened by soot, said Gray, who runs his own consulting company in B.C. “There will be a lot of soot deposited on the ice shelf from this fire. And it speeds up the warming process quite significantly.” “Simple white reflects heat and light away, but once you have a black body — imagine a tarmac-black asphalt on a really hot day and how much it absorbs heat,” he said. The massive plume of particulates from the fire would have travelled more

than 12,000 metres into the atmosphere, before the haze was carried east along the jet stream. “When that column started to build over a couple of those really key days, it got the smoke way, way up into the atmosphere and it basically gets stuck in the jet stream,” Gray said. “The jet stream will grab it, and like a river it will carry it down and take it as far as the volume goes. It could circumnavigate the globe if there’s enough of it.” The bulk of the smoke would have been produced when the fire was most powerful, three weeks ago, when it grew many times in size and began devouring parts of Fort McMurray, forcing 90,000 people to flee for their lives. Before the plume travelled east across the Atlantic Ocean, Gray said, it also travelled south, hitting large swaths of the southern United States. “By the time it reaches Spain and Britain, it’s quite diluted,” he said. “It may appear to be kind of a humid day, where you see kind of blurred landscapes around you because it’s kind of unclear. But it would not look anything like Edmonton did, or Fort Mac did a couple days ago.” Source: CBC News

Greek authorities have begun an operation to clear the country’s largest informal refugee camp in Idomeni on the Macedonian border, blocking access to the area and sending in more than 700 riot police. The government’s spokesman for the refugee crisis, Giorgos Kyritsis, said on Tuesday that police would not use force and that the operation was expected to last about a week to 10 days. By late afternoon, 32 buses carrying a total of 1,529 people had left Idomeni, police said, while earth-moving machinery was used to clear abandoned tents. Police and government authorities say the residents will be moved to newly completed official camps, including in the second-largest city, Thessaloniki. But many refugees fear the alternatives will be worse and have resisted moves to transfer them from Idomeni. Vicky Markolefa, a representative of the Doctors Without Borders charity, said the relocation operation was proceeding “very smoothly” on Tuesday but voiced concern over the facilities where the refugees were taken. “We are quite concerned whether these settlements are ready to host this amount of people in a dignified way,” she said. The Idomeni camp, which sprung up at an informal pedestrian border crossing for refugees heading north to Europe, is home to at least 8,400 people - including hundreds of children - mostly from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. At its peak, when Macedonia shut its border in March, it housed more than 14,000, but the numbers have declined as people realised the border was shut and began accepting authorities’ offers of alternative places to stay. In Geneva, UNHCR spokesman Adrian Edwards said the evacuation appeared to be taking place “calmly” and the UN refugee agency was sending more staffers to Idomeni. “As long as the movement of people from Idomeni is ... voluntary in nature [and] that we’re not seeing use of force, then we don’t have particular concerns about that,” he said. “It often does help to move people into more organised sites, when they’re willing to move to those places.” In Idomeni, most have been living in small camping tents pitched in fields

and along rail tracks, while aid agencies have set up large marquee-style tents to help house people. Greek authorities have been sending in cleaning crews regularly and have provided portable toilets, but conditions have been precarious at best, with heavy rain creating muddy ponds. Greek authorities are also eager to re-open a railway line - the country’s main freight train line to the Balkans - that runs through the camp and has been blocked by protesting camp residents since March 20. In recent weeks, the camp had begun taking on an image of semi-permanence, with refugees setting up small makeshift shops selling everything from cooking utensils to falafel and bread. More than 54,000 refugees and migrants have been trapped in financially struggling Greece since Balkan and European countries shut their land borders to a massive flow of people escaping war and poverty at home. Nearly a million people have passed through Greece, the vast majority arriving on islands from the nearby Turkish coast. In March, the European Union reached an agreement with Turkey meant to stem the flow and reduce the number of people undertaking the short but perilous sea crossing to Greece, where many have died after their overcrowded, unseaworthy boats sank. Under the deal, anyone arriving “illegally” on Greek islands from the Turkish coast after March 18 faces deportation back to Turkey, unless they successfully apply for asylum in Greece. But few want to request asylum in the country, which has been struggling with a six-year-long financial crisis that has left unemployment hovering at around 24 percent. Source: Al-Jazeera

Dramatic photographs have emerged of the bodies of Afghan Taliban boss Mullah Akhtar Mansour and his driver after the pair were killed a targeted drone strike authorized by Barack Obama. The images show two bodies - believed to be that of Mansour and the driver of the car - after they were pulled from vehicle wreckage at the weekend. However, it is not clear which body is that of Mansour. The images show the badly burned feet of one man, while another body is unidentifiable inside a wooden coffin. Both the Taliban and the Afghanistan Government have now confirmed his death after he was killed travelling in a remote area of the border with Pakistan. Source:.dailymail.co.uk/news

F A I T H

Narrated Ibn Umar: I heard Allah’s Apostle saying, “When you see the crescent (of the month of Ramadan), start fasting, and when you see the crescent (of the month of Shawwal), stop fasting; and if the sky is overcast (and you can’t see It) then regard the crescent (month) of Ramadan (as of 30 days)”. Sahih Bokhari 31-Fasting:124

8 Simple Steps to Help You Prepare for Ramadan By Wesam am mK Keraye Ker Kerayem eeraye rayem r em Have you ever wondered why it is difficult to concentrate in your prayer? Or why your faith throughout the year is not on a high like it is during Ramadan or through Hajj? Maybe it is because we usually jump straight from a phone conversation into Takbir or because we just go with the flow in Ramadan and are influenced by the environment around us and not our own ‘real’ feelings.A lot of us usually live life and have our faith dependent on an upcoming major event i.e. “I’m going to start reading a page of Quran a day as soon as Ramadan starts; I’m going to start praying Qiyam every night when I come back from hajj; or, I’m going to stop smoking when my child is born.” And because of this way of thinking we usually end up with an anticlimax; we don’t end up giving up smoking, we don’t end up praying Qiyam and we start reading Quran but then get back to our normal old self after a few days or weeks. This is because these ‘statements’ or ‘feelings’ are based on impulse and not a real thought out plan. We usually don’t prepare for Ramadan or hajj or have a plan for our faith to stay at the increase; we just go with the flow and expect it all to happen. Well, it doesn’t!. Wouldn’t you love to enter the month of Ramadan on a real high and have the effects of this beautiful month be a permanent impact on your life thereafter? How can this be done? Below are the 8 steps for a Legacy of a Ramadan. Step 1 – Create a Ramadan Count Down3 Counting down for Ramadan (whether it is done mentally or by keeping physical signs around the home or office) will help create

Ramadan Kareem to all Readers from our Advertisers, Writers and the Miracle Media Group.

hype and buzz in your mind and amongst the people around you. When you and others are counting down to the same event, it becomes part of regular conversation and excitement spreads. Step 2 –Seek knowledge about Ramadan This will help you ensure you will do things correctly and perfectly for Ramadan, it will create a hype as there are many motivational aspects and events in the month to look forward to and finally it is a reward reaper. The more you know about Ramadan the more you can apply, hence multiplying your rewards. Step 3 – Make a Ramadan plan Be it reading the entire Quran, ensuring you pray taraweeh every night or inviting families over for iftaar; make a list of things you would like to achieve in the month and then how you plan on achieving these goals. It is important that goals are realistic and it is better that your life doesn’t need to entirely take a different road in this month (i.e. take the month off work or change work hours

etc.) so that you may continue to do these deeds after Ramadan. Knowing what you want to achieve in the month will help you stay focused. Ensure you plan your day every night before you sleep when Ramadan starts (try to continue this even after Ramadan). Step 4 – Know your life Be aware if Ramadan affects anything that is happening in the month or shortly after. Do you have exams during Ramadan? Or is there a major family wedding after Ramadan by a short time? Moving house? If so, plan for these events from now. Study now so that you are prepared for the exams before the month starts. Be packed and ready to go before Ramadan or plan that you do it after so that it doesn’t take time away from your worship. The last thing you want to do is spend Ramadan at the shopping centres. Buy any Eid presents and prepare for any wedding before the month starts.

Step 5 – Prepare spiritually spiritua l We all know that Ramadan is about Fasting, Praying, Reading Quran and giving in charity. Start these worships early; don’t expect to just click into it as soon as the first day of Ramadan starts. Start doing extra prayers from now, start revising and regularly reading Quran now, get used to being generous and follow the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad and fast during Sha’baan. Step 6 – Prepare your mind Fasting is to refrain from more than just what we consume in our mouth. Start working on your patience; be extra vigilant with your conversations: ensure you are not backbiting, slandering or talking about useless things. Step 7 – Say ‘good riddance’ to bad habits Know what bad habits you have and stop them from now, don’t wait until Ramadan begins. If you sleep late, start sleeping early, if you are a Facebook junky start cutting down, have a coffee craze, slow it down etc. It might sound much easier said then done, but once you’ve committed yourself, purified your intentions – make sincere dua for guidance. Insh’Allah, these bad habits will be easier done with than you ever expected. Step 8 – Plan your life around your worship For instance; instead of working through your prayer or setting up meeting etc., at prayer times, plan that you have a break at prayer time. Don’t take your phone with you to the place you pray and forget the world as you stand between the hands of the almighty Allah.

Al -Ihsan Women’s Vocational Centre of Bangladesh Fundraising Dinner much, but there is a satisfaction: we helped many to

By: Mohammad Salahuddin Alhumdulillah with the Mercy of Allah(SWT) and the generosity of all the donors, Al -Ihsan Women’s Vocational Centre of Bangladesh had one more successful fund raising dinner on Saturday, May 14th at Paradise Banquet hall in Delta. Even though we raised 53K out of our targeted fund-raise of 80k we still consider this event a success. First and foremost, it allowed us to gather approximately 250 Muslims together in one place for the sake of Allah (SWT). This on its own is a great success; may Allah (SWT) join us all together in Jannah. The guest speaker from Seattle, Seikh Kyle Smith’s talk was very inspirational for our youth and sisters. Our all-time fundraiser, Sheikh Ahmad Shehab once again did an amazing job in motivating the audience and reminding them of their duties to Allah (SWT). We ask Allah (SWT) to shower Seikh Kyle Smith, Seikh Shehab and their families with blessings and re-unite them in Al Firdaos. The board of Al Ihsaan would like to thank each and every participant for their generosity and continued support for this project. Last but certainly not least, we would like to thank all the volunteers that made this event happen. Their relentless efforts should be an example to all. Al-Ihsan gave a briefing about its development phases of a tin-shed house with 30 part-time students in 2004 to a 5 storied school building with 250 full-time students from pre-kg to Grade-8 in 2016. Many poor girls now enjoy better health as they get a good meal every day, Alhamdulillah! Al-Ihsan is trying to make education interesting for the children. Al-Ihsan isn’t not only a worldly education center, it teaches the students Quran and everyday Fiqh, daily. By the grace of Allah(SWT), the students are doing well. School results in the public exam speaks for itself. Admission requests have increased tenfold, but sadly we cannot accommodate all. Al-Ihsan also teaches the girls how to make their own clothes. Some went ahead and started their own tailoring businesses! Al-Ihsan opened a showroom in Dhaka to sell the product from the student’s vocational training program. We don’t earn

work, not beg. It is a pity that we have to give the teachers a meager remuneration of 100 dollars per month; and we are not talking about a country where everything is very cheap. In Bangladesh, gas price is 99 taka per liter, which is 1.65 Canadian Dollar. Food cost is minimum 2000 Taka per month, which is 33 dollars per person. Now you can compare, and feel the living standard of a teacher, who runs her family with 100 dollars for an entire month. To live a decent life, good teachers leave us. We cannot hold them back, as we do not do justice. But still, we wish we could offer salary range of at least 300-500 dollars and thus attract motivated, sincere and apt teachers. We wish and we dream. And we have faith on Allah that one day this dream would come true. However, with limited inflow, we did many things with the help of Allah(SWT). This is a miracle of Allah(SWT), the Almighty. Despite all our shortcomings, we are continuing. We got brother Rizvee who has left his job from a renowned Education Institute at Dhaka and joined Al-Ihsan as Principal. With his supervision, we want to develop a curriculum that would instill faith in the hearts of these poor children. So they won’t beg and ask anything from anyone except Allah(SWT). We wish to equip them with a quality technical education, so they can earn their own living. Those, who are investing in the bank of Allah, by spending from their provisions—we thank them from the core of our hearts. May Allah accept it and increase it thousand folds and give you back on the day of resurrection. Thank you, for sharing your wealth to create a better world—feeding the hungry and enlightening the minds. “Verily we came from HIM and will return to HIM.” Please pray for us in your night prayers. Please pray so that we can continue and develop. We would like to remind you that we also collect Fitra, Fidya, Zakaat and Udya (Qurbani). Please get in touch with any of our Board Member. You could also e-mail at admin@aiwvc.com or visit Al-Ihsan website www.aiwvc.com for more details.

Miraj-un Nabi (saw)celebrations At Jamia Masjid Aulia Allah, Surrey

On May 14, Islamic Association of Western Canada in association with Jamia Masjid Aulia Allah held their Annual Mirajun-Nabi celebration first time at Masjid Aulia Allah Surrey. Syed Badiuddin Soharwardy from Islamic Supreme Council of Canada especially travelled from Calgary to attend this program. Also a young scholar Allama Aamir Hussain Chishti first time visited from Toronto to attend this Miraj-un-Nabi(saw) event. Program started with Tilawate-Quran-Pak Hafiz Ashfaq followed by beautiful Naat Sharifs by local Naat Khawans along with Abdul Rasool Salis. BC’s renowned scholar current

Imam and Khatib Jamia Masjid Aulia Allah Al-Haj Maulana Abudul Latif Naumani shared his knowledge about the Waqia Miraj in details and the journey of Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) from Masjid-e-Haraam to Masjid-e-Aqsa and from there to the 7th sky in his dynamic way. Guest scholar Allama Aamir Hussain Chishti described the importance of Waqia Miraj and started the word from Al Isra:1 “Subhan” details and given the references of Quran and Ahadiths to prove the reality of the Miraj. He stated that it is the consensus of the majority Ulama that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (PBUH) visit physically

from Masjid-e-Haraam to Masjid ul Aqsa and the Sidratul Muntha. The Beloved (PBUH) travelled in the night of Me’raaj until he reached the station of Qaaba Qosain. At the end Syed Badiuddin Soharwardy given his speech about the Waqia Miraj. He explained how some people due to their lack of knowledge and their ignorance in this field caused more confusion in their hearts because they failed to understand the unique relation between Allah and His Beloved Habeeb (PBUH). He detailed Waqia Miraj with proof from QUR’AN, Ahadith-e-Nabawi (Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam),

The Holy Quran says: “Holy is He who carried His bondman by night from the sacred Mosque to the Aqsa Mosque (Aqsa) around which We have put blessings that We might show him Our grand signs. No doubt, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.” (Al Isra:1) He also said that what we got the message in this Miraj un Nabi(saw) inci-

dent. This is the only incident in which all entire foundation of Islam means six believes of Islam seen in a practical way (Sura:Baqra) Amantu billahi wa malaikatihi wa kutubihi wa rusulihi wal-yawmil-akhiri...... Program was concluded with Salam by Pir Afzal Ahmed Naqashbandi and Dua by Prof. Soharwardy.

By: Sahib Thind, President: Today we bore witness to a historical event that has been long overdue. The Canadian people received a statement from the Canadian government recognizing the historical wrong that was done to the people of the Indian sub-continent. A society that does not recognize and make amends for its mistakes is bound by destiny to repeat them over and over again. The Komagata Maru incident, organized by the members of the Gadar party was a part of a secular movement for human and civil rights steeped in the dignity and respect of the common person. It was part of an international struggle against colonialism that had deep ties with diverse groups including the radical women’s rights movement, the

NDP Leader Tom Mulcair (Outremont) made the following statement on the anniversary of the Komagata Maru tragedy: “Over a hundred years ago, 376 passengers boarded a Japanese steamship named Komagata Maru. Most of them were Sikhs from the Punjab region of India, searching for safety and a better life in Canada. Instead of being welcomed when they arrived

Chinese democratic movements, the struggles of the people’s in the middle east, and Irish and Scottish peoples’ amongst others. We recognize that that struggle of the common person continues today with the struggles of the first nations people’s in Canada, the plight of the common people in Syria, Palestine and Iraq and the situation we face with imminent environmental disaster. For over 2 decades the Prof. Mohan Singh Memorial Foundation has worked to obtain an official House of Commons apology from a Canadian Government for the events related to the Komagata Maru incident. When Prime Minister Trudeau visited our annual Festival in Bear Creek Park in Surrey BC on August 3 2014 - on the affair’s 100th Anniversary - and promised a formal apolo-

gy, we knew our work would finally be done. After 102 long years, the story of these early South Asian pioneers will be enshrined in our national public record. We would like to thank the Right Honourable Prime Minister for keeping his promise, and for making this date a historic one for all the generations of South Asian migrants to Canada. We would also like to thank all the people from around the world who made this possible. This is a victory for the South Asian Community, and for the people of Canada. Please note: Photo attached is of Sahib Thind (President, Prof. Mohan Singh Memorial Foundation) & Rt. Hon. PM Justin Trudeau. The PM is signing a copy of the official apology yesterday in the early evening in Ottawa, Center Block, Parliament of Canada.

in Vancouver, they were refused entry. The ship remained in Burrard Inlet for two months while the passengers were refused basic necessities, like food and water, before all but twenty were sent back to India. Let’s be clear: The Komagata Maru wasn’t just an “incident”—it was the result of racist and discriminatory laws, much like the Chinese Head Tax, designed to exclude entire groups of people from Canada. These policies did immeasurable harm. When the ship arrived in Calcutta, police fired on the passengers. Nineteen people were killed. Many more were imprisoned and persecuted. New Democrats have a long and proud history of standing with the South Asian community in Canada and fighting for justice for the victims. Four years ago, our former colleagues, Jasbir Sandhu and Jinny Sims, moved a motion in Parliament calling for an of-

– New Democrat John Horgan and multiculturalism spokesperson Bruce Ralston issued the following statement on the federal government’s apology and recognition of the historical wrongs of the Komagata Maru incident in 1914. “On May 23, 1914, the Komagata Maru arrived in Vancouver’s Burrard Inlet carrying 376 British subjects from India for a new life in Canada. However, the vessel was moored off port, eventually denied permission to come ashore and was even refused such ba-

sic necessities as food and water. On July 23 the Komagata Maru was forced to depart for Asia. “This dark chapter of Canadian history came at a time when racist, exclusionary laws existed to deny immigrants of Asian origin and descent the right to settle in Canada. In 2007, the New Democrats under Jack Layton were the first party to call for an official apology from the Government of Canada in the House of Commons.

ficial apology for the Komagata Maru. Despite a nation-wide petition campaign that collected thousands of signatures, our motion was voted down by the government of the day. After years of struggle, we welcome the long-awaited official apology from the Prime Minister in the House of Commons today. This was a dark chapter in the history of a country that has come to recognize diversity and inclusion as a great strength. While the healing and reconciliation can now truly begin, we owe it to those who were turned away to do more than just apologise. We must ensure that this kind of tragedy can never again be repeated. That’s why New Democrats will continue to fight for a more welcoming Canada—where diversity is celebrated, families can reunite with loved ones, and the most vulnerable are given refuge in their time of need.”

“The official apology in Ottawa serves as a reminder that although the Komagata Maru incident occurred 102 years ago, racism and anti-immigrant discrimination in many forms still exists today. “We should remember the lesson of the Komagata Maru – we need to do all we can to strive toward a more just and tolerant society. For the South Asian community, and all Canadians, this apology will begin the process of healing and reconciliation.”

The bill, which passed the Senate unanimously, would allow US citizens to sue foreign governments that support terrorist attacks. Senate has unanimously passed legislation which would allow the families of 9/11 victims to sue the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for their involvement in the attacks. Almost 3,000 people were killed and the World Trade Center was destroyed in 2001 in the largest terrorist attack in American history. “Today the Senate has spoken loudly and unanimously that the families of victims of terrorist attacks should be able to hold the perpetrators, even if it’s a country, a nation, accountable” said Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) who co-sponsored the bill. The bill is called the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA) and would make it possible for citizens to sue foreign govern-

ments involved in terrorist attacks against Americans. It is not specifically aimed at Saudi Arabia. There has been pressure from a group of families of 9/11 victims seeking to sue the Saudi government for the Kingdom’s alleged financial support of Al-Qaeda. “The American people, as well as our families, deserve the truth about 9/11 and those responsible deserve to be held to account” the group of families said in a statement following the passage of the bill. “JASTA promises us the truth, accountability and a strong warning that the United States finally will stand behind its promise of justice to those who were injured and the survivors of the three thousand children, mothers, fathers, wives and husbands who were murdered in our homeland on 9/11.” So far they have been unable to sue Saudi

Arabia since no court would accept the case, due to the 1972 Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act gives foreign governments immunity from prosecution in US courts. There is already one exception to this rule if a sovereign country is designated as a state sponsor of terrorism, which Saudi Arabia is not. Saudi Arabia has threatened to sell off assets worth $750 billion if the bill passes Congress, since they fear those assets could be seized by the US and used to pay the families. Before the bill becomes law it has to first pass through the House of Representatives before being signed into law by the President.

The numbers were obtained from Syrian government sources, the United Kingdombased Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Saturday. “Since March 2011, at least 60,000 people lost their lives to torture or to horrible conditions, notably the lack of medication or food, in regime prisons,” said the Observatory’s Rami Abdel Rahman. Though the Syrian conflict started with popular protests against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, it quickly became a civil war between the government and rebel groups. Staffan de Mistura, the United Nations special envoy to Syria, recently estimated that Most dead as a result of torture or poor humani- 400,000 people had died throughout the last tarian conditions, says Syrian Observatory for five years. ore than 60,000 people have been killed through torture or died in dire humanitarian conditions inside Syrian government prisons throughout the country’s five-year uprising, according to a monitor.

Nadim Houry, a Beirut-based Middle East researcher for Human Rights Watch (HRW), accuses the Syrian government of “rampant torture”. Speaking out on ‘sadistic’ Syrian government jails Explaining that HRW cannot verify the Observatory’s statistics, Houry told Al Jazeera: “We have known how bad the situation is in the detention facilities for a long time and that many people have died inside.” In a report published in December, HRW concluded that the Caesar photographs - a photo cache documenting the deaths of more than 28,000 deaths in government custody which was smuggled out of the country - suggested that the government had carried out crimes against humanity. ‘No progress on detainees’ “There has been no progress on detainees,” Calculating a precise death toll is impossible, Houry said. “The entire world saw the large partially due to the forced disappearances of scale detention and death in the Ceasar photos, tens of thousands of Syrians whose fates re- and despite all of this, there was no reaction.” main unknown. ‘War crimes’

The International Syria Support Group - the 17-country coalition that includes the United States and Russia - released a statement on Tuesday that urged the UN special envoy de Mistura to negotiate the release of detainees in government custody, as well as those held by armed groups. Houry added: “Detainees deserve the same level of attention from the high level political actors, like the US and Russia, as all the other issues. It has been going on for too long and with too high a cost.” In a February 2016 report, the UN Human Rights Council accused both government and opposition forces, including the al-Nusra Front and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS), of subjecting detainees to torture. The council accused the government and alNusra of war crimes, while it said ISIL has “committed the crimes against humanity of murder and torture, and war crimes”. Source: Al Jazeera

Wala Zaidan

By Azza Rojbi The new era of war and occupation, which began with the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, has resulted in the catastrophic killing and displacement of millions of people in the Middle East and North Africa. While this human tragedy has continued, imperialist governments have launched a racist campaign of targeting and fear-mongering against Muslims, especially in Europe. It is clear that Islamophobia is rampant and on the rise. In response to this growing campaign of fear and racism, Vancouver’s peace coalition Mobilization Against War and Occupation (MAWO) organized a community forum titled, “Islamophobia: the

War at Home, Why Imperialist Governments Use Racism and Fear.” Held on May 18, the forum brought people together to discuss Islamophobia, what it is and what peace-loving people in Canada can do to organize to defeat it. The forum speakers included Mamdoh Ashir, Iraqi-Canadian and Muslim community social justice organizer; Wala Zaidan, an Iraqi high school student and poet; Azza Rojbi, a North African social justice organizer from Tunisia and Executive member of Mobilization Against War and Occupation (MAWO), as well as Thomas Davies, an organizer with the Working Group to Stop Bill C-51 which is demanding a full repeal of Canada’s so-called “anti-terrorism”

law. The dynamic panel also discussed how Islamophobia has been used to justify continuing wars and occupations in the Middle East and North Africa. Following the speakers, there was a lively discussion between participants of all ages and backgrounds on how to work together to defeat Islamophobia. MAWO encourages everyone to get involved in the peace movement! Join us at our upcoming anti-war rally and petition campaign starting at 4pm on May 28th at the Vancouver Art Gallery (Robson St. @ Howe St. in downtown Vancouver) Please visit www.mawovancouver.org for more information.

By: ELIZABETH WHITMAN One consequence of Donald Trump’s fiery rhetoric against Muslims is that has renewed attention to the discrimination he espouses: Islamophobia. But what is Islamophobia, exactly? The word has a broad meaning and often serves as an umbrella term to encapsulate negative sentiments ranging from an individual’s anti-Islam views to societywide discrimination against Muslims. It evokes similar pejorative labels for discrimination against other groups of people, like homophobia or anti-Semitism,

civil rights activists said. “Over the years, our society has decided to use terms that are specific for when you attack a minority. Anti-Semitic, homophobic -- those are not terms most people want to be called,” said Corey Saylor, head of the Department to Monitor and Combat Islamophobia at the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization based in Washington, D.C.The history and definition of the term Islamophobia can vary, depending on whom you ask. According to the Center for Race &

Gender at the University of California, Berkeley, the term emerged in 1991 in a report that defined it as “unfounded hostility towards Muslims and therefore fear or dislike of all or most Muslims.” “It helps to describe a whole spectrum of behavior and attitudes that have existed a long time but haven’t had a name before,” said Peter Gottschalk, a professor of religion at Wesleyan University. Like other prejudices, Islamophobia is a learned fear, one instilled by society. “I don’t think anybody’s naturally afraid of Muslims and Islam,” Gottschalk said.

We are still living in another great depression but so silent and innocent dominating every vein in our body, enslaving our minds Truth has become an illness. By:Next Shark Flying can be a huge part of life. It’s a way to get away, to visit family , to take those business trips we all love so much. But flying can also be a very stressful part of life – there’s a million annoying and tiring parts about flying that can make the whole experience a drag or sometimes even frightening. And who knows more about those annoying tidbits (and hacks to avoid them!) than the people who live their life in the sky: pilots and flight attendants. Take a tip from these professionals and learn some helpful hacks and interesting facts for the next time you fly. 1.Pilots Are Served Different Meals If there are two pilots on the flight, food poisoning is a big fear, for obvious reasons. To keep at least one pilot healthy, the pilots are served two different meals and are not allowed to share. This way, if one meal is bad, at least one pilot will be able to fly. Smart thinking. 2.Consider Tipping the Flight Attendants The word “bribing” is kind of strong. I’d prefer…letting the flight attendants know

L I F E S T Y L E you care! Attendants have stated that they never get tips or gifts, so if they were to get saaay a $20 bill or a box of chocolates, you will be treated like royalty. 3.Add More Arm Room This is a great hack for a window seat passenger. On the underside of the armrest, you’ll feel a button right by the joint of the arm. Push it, lift it up and you’ll instantly have more room to lounge about! 4.Planes Don’t Need Two Engines It’s been proven that most large commercial air crafts don’t actually need two engines to fly. Whether it’s comforting or terrifying, one engine will work just as well. 5.Pilots Need Sleep, Too It sounds scary, but it’s true. Half of all pilots admit to taking a nap while flying. Don’t panic: this is what a co-pilot is for. 6.Opt For Bottled Water Think twice about asking for a glass of water, coffee or tea on your flight. Flight attendants have reported that most of the flight’s water comes from a (usually older) holding tank…that means the water is not

Metro Vancouver CrossCultural Seniors Network Society’s (MVCCSN) Elder Abuse Awareness to Action Program was recently honored with the 2016 – EAAAA- Innovative Program Award by SFU’s Gerontology Research Centre. The award was presented by Prof. Gloria M. Gutman, of SFU’s Gerontology Dept. and Gerontology Research Centre and received by President Ihsan Malik board members Sonia Chaudhary and Mohinder Grewal on behalf of MVCCSN. Recognizing the exemplary work that the society does for seniors, Gutman said, “It was impressive indeed that to date 837

super clean. Ask for bottled water. 7.Your Checked Bags Aren’t Always Handled Well Baggage handlers have to fit freight and 100+ bags into a cargo pit…needless to say, they’re going to make it fit however they can, no matter how fragile they are. Try your best to avoid bringing delicate objects on board and a “I Love Baggage Handlers” tag never hurt anyone. 8.Bring Hand Sanitizer Planes. Are. Dirty. Your trays especially are covered in germs. So please, do not put your food on your trays. And don’t slack on the hand sanitizer. 9.Something Will Always Be Broken on the Plane Planes are big machines, which means the odds are that something will be broken. Luckily, all the bigger parts of the planes have two or three spares on board, little do passengers know. Generally, the things that are broken on a day-to-day basis are more like reading light, coffee makers ect. 10.The Truth About Oxygen Masks

South Asians from twenty-three different groups have attended the seventeen workshops on elder financial abuse that MVCCSN has organized.” The 2016 SFU Gerontology Elder Abuse Awareness to Action Awards (EAAAA) were presented at a reception held on May 16 at SFU’s downtown Vancouver Harbour Centre Campus. Thanking Gloria Gutman, SFU award committee and all the community partners on behalf of the society, President of MVCCSN Ihsan Malik said he was humbled, honored and excited that his society was chosen for this prestigious award. “I would be amiss if I didn’t mention the efforts of Board members Mohinder Grewal and Sonia Chaudhary in achieving this milestone,” added Mr. Malik. Incorporated in September 1995, MVCCSN is a non-profit organization whose members are seniors from various cultural backgrounds and service providers who are involved with seniors’ issues, including seniors who are newcomers and recent immigrants in Metro Vancouver. The Society is managed by a volunteer board, current members include Ihsan Malik (President), Mohinder Grewal (Vice Prsident), Barbra Mikulec, Arun Mehta (Director), Sonia Chaudhary (Treasurer), Narayan Kulkarni

As it turns out, you only have about 15 minutes worth of oxygen per mask. However, that is plenty of time for the pilot to get the plane to a lower altitude. It’s also good to know that you have about 20 seconds before you pass out in a high enough altitude – that’s why you should put your mask on first and then your child’s mask. 11.The Lights Are Purposefully Dimmed The reason the lights are dimmed before landing a nighttime flight is in case you need to evacuate the plane. Just in case you do have to get off the flight quickly, the dimmed lights will have helped your eyes adjust to the darkness so you can move quickly.

By: Huda Rashid, Registered Dietitian When We Prepare For The Month Of Ramadan, We Think Of It As A Time Of Reflection, Doing Good Deeds And Most Importantly Fasting. The Word ‘Fasting’ Is Often Associated With The Following Words: ‘Weight Loss,’ ‘Dehydration’ And ‘Malnutrition.’ Did You Know That It Is Possible To Fast During This Month And Still Meet Your Energy Needs? Did You Also Know That While Fasting During Ramadan, Many Muslims Actually End Up Gaining Rather Than Losing Weight? Fasting And Meeting Your Nutritional Needs May Sound Contradictory, But It Can In Fact Be Achieved By Eating The Proper Foods During The Morning And Evening Meals. You Can Also Control Weight Gain During The Month By Not Overindulging In High Caloric Foods After A Long Day Of Fasting! Here Is Some Information On How To Plan Your Meals For Ramadan. This Year Ramadan Is In June And There Will Be Long Days Of Fasting So It Is Important To Maintain Optimal Nutrition By Eating Nutrient Dense Foods & Consuming The Proper Amounts Of Liquids During The Suhoor And Iftar Meals. Fasting During Ramadan Slows Down Metabolism In The Body Which Means Certain Foods Should Be Eaten To Maintain Your Normal Weight. Many Muslims See No Change In Their Weight And Others May Even Gain Weight. This Weight Gain Is Often Caused By Eating Excessive Amounts Of High-Fat Fried Foods Such As Pakoras & Samosas, Or High-Fat High-Sugar Mithai (Sweets). It Is Very Important To Plan Your Meals Carefully To Ensure You Are Eating The Right Foods To Get The Nutrients Your Body Needs To Function Properly. Suhoor (Sehri) The Suhoor Meal Should Be A Nutritious Meal Consisting Of Complex Carbohydrates Containing Fibre, Since This Will Help To Release Energy Into The Body Slowly, Keeping You Full Throughout The Day. Complex

causes acidity problems. • Gastro-paresis – caused due either blocking of the ends or in-efficient working of stomach. Food stays untreated and causes stomach-aches. • Diarrhea – food when passed on to intestines for absorption of water, sometimes has viruses that stick to the walls of large intestine and prevents it from absorbing water. And so the liquid food directly passes out. • Cancer – Stomach cancers usually occur due to fluctuations in acidity level and may present with vague symptoms of abdominal fullness, weight loss and pain. Continued in next edition

Carbohydrates Are Found In Grains And Seeds, Like Wheat, Bulgur, Oats, Quinoa, Brown Rice, Beans & Lentils. Avoid Foods That Are High In Sugar Such As Breads Made With White Flour Or White Rice Because These Will Be Digested Quickly And Will Not Keep You Full For Long. Your Body Will Adjust To Fasting In A Couple Of Days But It Will Help To Eat A WellBalanced Meal At Suhoor. Do Not Binge In Order To Be Full The Entire Day! A Well Balanced Meal Should Include A Plate Divided Into Three Portions. One Third Of Your Plate Should Be A Source Of Protein Such As Large Omega-3 Eggs, Pc® Plain 0% M.F. Greek Yogurt, Nuts, Seeds Or Peanut Butter. One Third Of Your Plate Should Contain A Source Of Complex Carbohydrates; These Are Often Foods Containing Whole Grains Such As The Ones Listed Above. The Last Portion Of Your Plate Should Consist Of A Fruit Source Such As A Medium Sized Apple, Banana, ½ Cup Of Frozen Mango Chunks Or ½ Cup Of Berries. Don’t Forget That Frozen Fruit Is Just As Nutritious As Fresh! Be Sure To Drink Plenty Of Water At The Suhoor Meal And Limit Caffeine In Drinks Such As Tea, Coffee And Pop Since These Cause Faster Water Loss Through Urination. It Is Especially Important To Stay Hydrated During The Hot And Lengthy Summer Days! Ideas For Suhoor Meal: *1 Arz Whole Wheat Pita With 1 Tsp Of Margarine, *1 – 2 Large Omega-3 Egg(S) Or 2 Tbsp Of Peanut Butter, One Cup Of 1% Milk And 1 Piece Of Fruit Such As An Apple Or Banana *2-3 Cups Of Water Or More! By:Shabnam Khan – Family Counsellor The implementation of latest technology has improved people in different ways. For some it has made it faster, convenient and less cost effective. For some it has taken a total turn in their communication skills and interacting skills. The next time you are in public place or any gatherings, count the number of people who are looking at their phones or any other device. Though they are around people whom they know, they are not with them. They are busy talking or texting someone who are not even there. As you drive, notice how often you see two people in the same car, but each talking on cell phones to people who are not present. Connecting as families at a dinner table is diminishing as people tend to eat at drive-through or just eat in front of T.V. even though all the family members are home. It is a very healthy choice to at least have one meal of the day, if possible, together! This time of connecting has benefits like better nutritional intake, behavioral benefits and teens less likely to engage in substance abuse. Get the conversation going and you’ll be amazed to get the amount of information you can share and discuss

By: Asma Shams Mortgage Broker Yes, being happy with a family is the most blissful thing. It comes when family has love for each other, unity, and good communication. Family is made of grandparents, parents, children, aunts and uncles, and more. Some families are nuclear too. When all members know their boundaries and puts others needs ahead of theirs leads to happiness and harmony.

Atmosphere. Mood. Action. When there is love, trust, and relaxed atmosphere in the house, it affects is extended to the moods of family members and ultimately their actions. We are very polite and courteous with strangers or coworkers which does not continue once we are home after work. We are tired and take our family for granted even if we don’t want to. We do not take care to be polite or behave any which way we want with carelessness in our actions. We are aware that no matter what we do or say our families will understand and stand by us. If this hurts our family or done when they are themselves in a bad mood, we snap at them and are generally impatient in our actions. The seeds of anger and discontent are sewed by

amongst your family members as this is the place to connect with each other. Regardless of the depth of the connection, your family needs your attention! As you give them the attention they need, they may complain less and you will find that you will begin to receive the attention you need as well. Just like plants grow in the direction of sunlight! If you have a plant which always stays in the dark, it will not be healthy if you do not occasionally turn it towards the light. It will grow off balance and the side of the plant that is in the shade will wither and die. You must turn the dark side towards the light for the plant to grow. The same is for human beings. You must turn your inner self towards the light. Once they are in the light you can address them and heal them and this is only through dealing with the issues and not running away from them. Your relationships are very unique, so cherish them while you can! For more information regarding the services, please contact The Miracle.

such small or big incidences w h i c h might not seem to be in our control, but is. We are all busy fighting a daily battle of livelihood. There are situations beyond our control or capacity but family should always come first. We are energetic and positive with clients, coworkers, patients, and friends which drains from our system when we are in our own private homes. We think this is alright and family will understand but consistent occurrences like this hurts the ones closes to us. Our children can observe this. It spoils the mood and atmosphere of our home and adds distance slowly yet steadily. We live in a house together but in an individual way. If there is any serious problem, we may help each other but the atmosphere is unpleasant on a daily basis. We hear parents complaining that
