Often, getting a good cry can be exactly what the doctor ordered. In fact, some psychologists also say that by not tearing up occasionally, we may be doing ourselves a disservice. “Crying activates the body in a healthy way,” says Stephen Sideroff, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist at UCLA and director of the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Ethics. “Letting down one’s guard and one’s defenses and [crying] is a very positive, healthy thing. The same thing happens when you watch a movie and it touches you and you cry... That process of opening into yourself... it’s like a lock and key.”
Crying can benefit both your body and your mind in many ways. For example, since it lets the negative energy out it detoxifies the human body. Also, it helps the mind and attitude improve mood in a good way. Letting it out will help you lift your spirit and release pain. Other than only helping the body, crying will bring awareness to your surrounding and help grow support. Having others around will make you feel loved and secured. Let it out when you need to because otherwise, it’s no better for your body to deal with the negative feelings.
In your everyday environment, if you can find safe places to let the stress and bad feelings out, it will be easier for you to enjoy the physical and emotional benefits of crying. But without fear of reprisal or judgment. Cry because you want. Cry because you need it. Cry because you feel the benefits of it at the end.
