Pro Tip With all of the manufacturers claiming that their golf ball is superior, choosing a golf ball can be very confusing. Putting aside a few less important aspects such as dimple patterns, golf balls can be thought of as either high-spin or low-spin. High-spin balls put more weight in the center and low-spin balls put more weight towards the perimter. Low-spin balls fly lower, curve less, roll father in the fairway, but do not stop as well on the greens. High-spin balls fly higher, curve more and stop faster on fairways and greens. So, players that need more distance will probably score better with a low-spin ball. Additional variables such as the hardness or softness of a ball are more of a preference and will not likely affect your score. Hint: Unless the "One Ball Rule" is in effect, you can 10 | Gosser Memorial Golf Course carry one of each and switch as needed between holes, but not during the play of a hole.

A

Japanese reporter by the name of Nov Takahashi invented the word cosplay when he was sent to report on the 1984 WorldCon in Los Angeles. He coined the term (from the words costume and play) while he watched fans of all types dress up as their favorite characters. It is a common misconception on that cosplay originated in Japan and the coining of the word is the extent of Japanese apanese involvement in its creation. The tradition of dressing up in costume e at conventions began decades earlier. Initially dubbed as “costuming” in the 1930s, 0s, it did not require participants to mimic a character’s appearance. Forrest J. Ackerman, the first attendee to show up in costume, dressed up as a futuristt when he attended the 1st WorldCon in 1939. Over the years, conventionss began b to take the th appearance nce of masquerade balls and prizes were given for best be est s costume.

The Japanese manga series Urusei Yatsura and the anime television series Mobile Suit Gundam helped launch the cosplay culture. Borrowing costuming from North America, fans would dress up as their favorite characters and re-enact their favorite scenes. Still to this day, fans of all ages perform cosplay as an expression of love for their favorite characters.

y a l p s Co レ プ コス

BY MATTHEW BUSBY

Today, cosplay is a subculture of its own. In North America, cosplay shows its true fandom at sci-fi, anime, comic book and superhero conventions alike. In Japan, cosplay has been embodied into pop culture especially in districts like Harajuku and Shibuya. Within this subculture, there is a strong sense of community. Whether someone enjoys creating costumes, modeling or even photography, fans can interact with one another and appreciate the same sense of unity.

Although there are many cosplayers who participate in these types of events for fun, some earn their living by creating, modeling and speaking at cosplay events. In the end, those that put love and hard work into their craft enjoy wearing the costumes and attending events with fellow cosplay fans.

This year marks Misawa's 5th Annual Omnicon that brings super fans together and introduces newbies to the cosplay culture and all things gaming. We encourage you to join us on Saturday, Aug. 26 at the Misawa Club for the chance to win prizes, play in gaming tournaments, and dress up and perform at the cosplay contests. Be a part of our enclusive community where you can come exactly as you are or transform into someone, or something, else!
