Military Spouse Preference

What is Military Spouse Preference?

The spouse of an active duty member of the Military Services who relocates via a permanent change of station (PCS) move as a sponsored dependent, to the military sponsor’s new permanent duty station is entitled to military spouse preference (MSP) for all positions in the commuting area of the new duty station being filled under competitive procedures. You must upload your PCS orders when applying for a position.

When do you lose your Military Spouse Preference?

You lose MSP when you accept or decline a regular category NAF (Non-Appropriated funds), Appropriated funds (GS), or AAFES (BX) position. You also lose your MSP if you decline an interview invitation for regular category positions. You DO NOT lose the Military Spouse Preference if you accept or decline FLEX (flexible hourly) positions.

How many times can you use the Military Spouse Preference?

You can apply with Military Spouse Preference without limit. Military Spouses will be referred using MSP until they accept or decline a regular category position, fail to maintain eligibility, or are no longer interested in being referred.

Do I still have Military Spouse Preference if I got married after my spouse was already stationed in Misawa?

No. To be entitled for Military Spouse Preference the spouse must:

• Have married the military sponsor prior to the date of the military sponsor’s orders authorizing a permanent change of station.

• When applying for a position, submit a copy of the Permanent Change of Station (PCS) order identifying a dependent's-authorized move and the sponsor’s reporting date to the new duty location.

Who qualifies for Family Member Preference?

Family members are the spouse, or unmarried dependent children, including stepchildren, adopted children and foster children not more than 23 years of age, residing with a member of the U.S. Armed Forces or a U.S. citizen civilian employee of a U.S. Government Agency (APF employee, AAFES employees).

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SCHOOL

Thinking about starting college classes? The U.S. has over 4,000 higher education institutions, so choosing the right school can be a complex decision.

Some important factors to consider include:

S So me i mp or t ta t nt fac t to rs t o co n ns id erinclude:

Programs offered | What schools or programs offer the degree or certifications needed for your future career? Are the courses available online or only offered in-person?

Admission requirements | What information or fees are required prior to enrolling? What are the application deadlines? Does the school require you to sign an enrollment contract?

Cost | Does the school accept Tuition Assistance or have the Yellow Ribbon Program (if using the Post-9/11 GI Bill®)? Do they offer discounts for AD military, dependents or veterans?

Credit transfers | Do they accept credits from other schools? Do they accept CLEP, DSST or AP test credits? Do they award credits for military service from your CCAF or Joint Service Transcript?

You may also want to consider factors like accreditation, college rankings, graduation rates, prestige or if they offer career placement resources.

Contact your school's admissions office directly for more detailed information.

FSS SPOTLIGHT FSS

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT WORKING AT ODR?

My favorite thing about working for ODR is getting to take people off base and explore the natural beauty of Japan whether it be through hiking, kayaking, biking or any of our other activities. Educating people about the physical and mental benefits of getting outside and wandering around is also an added bonus!

WHAT DO YOU WISH THE MISAWA COMMUNITY KNEW ABOUT YOUR PROGRAMS?

ODR is for everyone! Whether you’re an avid hiker with multiple peaks under your belt, have a family and want something to do on the weekend or are totally new to Outdoor Recreation programs, we have something for you.

WHAT IS YOUR BEST MEMORY AT ODR?

ASHLEIGH DUNN Outdoor Recreation Center Outdoor Adventure Program Director

The Misawa Mudder is my favorite event and holds many great memories for me because of the amount of work we put into it. It is an awesome collaborative endeavor followed by seeing people exhausted and covered in mud.
