Snow FESTIVAL
©HTB
by Matthew Busby
S
apporo, the capital of Hokkaido, is known for world class ski resorts, beer and the annual Sapporo Snow Festival. The first festival was held in Odori Park, located in the heart of the city, in 1950 with only six snow statues created by local high school students.1 Today, the festival has multiple locations offering different activities and sculptures and draws travelers from all over the world.
W
hen Sapporo hosted the Winter Olympic Games in 1972, the Snow Festival was widely acknowledged around the world through international media.1 After the games ended, the International Snow Sculpture Contest was born. Each year, teams from around the world join including Shenyang, Alberta, Munich, Sydney and Portland. The Sapporo Snow Festival has grown in popularity reaching over two million attendees in 2017.
O
Join Misawa ITT as they take you to the largest winter festival in Japan! The 69th Sapporo Snow Festival will be held Feb. 5–12, 2018. See hundreds of beautiful snow statues and ice sculptures at Odori-park and Susukino Street. There is also plenty of shopping in downtown Sapporo. dori Park is the biggest attraction and spans 12 blocks through the middle of Sapporo. During the festival, each block represents different structures and themes. The Sapporo TV Tower that overlooks the entire park is the best starting point to begin your 1.5 km walk through the festival. As you walk through the park, take in the small sculptures, ice skating rink, jumping platform for snowboarders and freestyle skiers and, of course, food.2 The Susukino site includes the ice sculpture contest and ice bar. The Tsudome site features snow slides and children’s activities from Feb. 1–12, 2018.
A
s you walk along the grounds, you will notice large expertly-crafted ice and snow structures. Each piece is worked on from the beginning of January to the beginning of the festival. These icy landmarks come alive as the sun sets with dazzling imagery displayed directly on their surface. Sources:

To be eligible for the 25,000 points, you must make $3,000 or more in net purchases with the card within 90 days of account opening. Please allow up to eight weeks after the 90-day period for the 25,000 points to post to your rewards balance. Account must be open and not in default at the time the 25,000 points are issued in order to be posted to your rewards balance. Limit of one promotional offer per account. Offer valid for accounts opened from 10/6/17 to 12/31/17. 2More Rewards Cards earn 3 points for every $1 of net purchases made at supermarkets and gas stations, 2 points for every $1 of net purchases made at restaurants, and 1 point for every $1 of other net purchases. A More Rewards Card supermarket, gas station or restaurant purchase may only earn 1 point per dollar spent, depending on the merchant code used to process the transaction. Restaurants located within another establishment (e.g., hotel, casino, commissary, grocery store, event venue) may be ineligible, in which case you will receive 1 point per dollar spent at these locations. In addition, superstores, supermarkets and warehouse clubs that sell gasoline are not considered gas stations, so you will earn 1 point per dollar spent at these locations. Rewards are earned on eligible net purchases. “Net purchases” means the sum of your eligible purchase transactions minus returns and refunds. Eligible purchase transactions do not include, and rewards are not earned for, the following transactions: cash advances, convenience checks, balance transfers, or fees of any kind, including finance charges, late fees, returned check fees, ATM cash advance fees, and annual fees, if any. Navy Federal cash equivalent transactions, such as the purchase, loading or re-loading of Navy Federal gift and prepaid cards (e.g., Navy Federal gift cards, Visa® Buxx Cards, GO Prepaid Cards), are also not eligible purchase transactions and do not earn rewards. 3Currently, rates range from 10.65% APR to 18% APR, are based on creditworthiness, and will vary with the market based on the U.S. Prime Rate. ATM cash advance fees: None if performed at a Navy Federal branch or ATM. Otherwise, $0.50 per domestic transaction or $1.00 per overseas transaction. The Navy Federal More Rewards American Express® Card is issued and administered by Navy Federal Credit Union. American Express is a federally registered service mark of American Express and is used by the issuer pursuant to a license. © 2017 Navy Federal NFCU 13660-B (9-17)
