H

alestorm is a powerful hard rock/metal band from Red Lion, Pennsylvania. The group consists of singer Lzzy (Elizabeth) Hale, drummer Arejay, bassist Josh Smith and guitarist Joe Hottinger. Lzzy began learning how to play the piano at just five years old, while her little brother Arejay took over the toy drum set that their parents originally bought for her. When Arejay was just 10 and Lzzy 13, the siblings began writing songs together and metal magic was born. The two went on to play small gigs at talent shows and coffee shops. A musical family indeed—the Hale home had such a rock music atmosphere that the family called each other "The Partridge Family meets Spinal Tap" (Sweetwater Guitars and Gear, 2013). Roger Hale, Lzzy and Arejay’s father, was the original bassist for the group before they tried out other musicians. In 2003, Hottinger joined and Smith completed the group in 2004. Halestorm got their big break when they signed to Atlantic Records in 2005, with a little help from producer David Ivory, who recognized their talent. Halestorm's live EP, One and Done was released in 2006 and their self-titled debut album lf-t lf f--ttittle ed de ebu b t al a albu lbu b m hi hitt sh sshelves hel hel elvve es in 2009. Misery." Lzzy occasionally goes back to her roots, keying the piano that ignited her love for music in ballads like "Dear Daughter," from Halestorm's latest studio album Into The Wild Life (2015). Though she doesn't play piano as often as she used to, both instruments are equally important to her artistry. She explains, "I am approaching guitar from two different angles, whereas my knowledge of music stems from the piano but then my soul or whatever has always been in my vocals, so we kind of mash the guitar there in the middle. So anytime that I’m writing a solo or anything I have to kind of sing it first… you have to be able to be very melodic. I’m not entirely a shredder." Laughing, she confesses that, "Joe takes over that part." In 2013, after 16 years of playing music together, Halestorm became the first female-fronted hard rock band to be nominated for and take home a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance for "Love Bites (So Do I)" off of their second album, Strange Case of… (2012). It was a moment that the band members would not soon forget. They thanked their fans and raised the award, quoting their popular song, "Here’s to Us." After the win Smith said, "we were so honored to be there and we couldn’t have expected that." (LeHigh Valley Live, 2013).

I am the fire, I am burning brighter, roaring like a storm and I am the one I’ve been waiting for.

Beside the a amazing melodic chords mazi maz ma zing zing ng rriffs, iffs if f , melo fs m elo odi dic c ch cho orrds o ds and fast, strong beats, listeners usually recognize one thing right off the bat with Halestorm; that voice can silence the wildest of crowds. Known for her raspy, electric guitarlike pipes— a mix between Janis Joplin and Ann Wilson, Lzzy Hale has earned her title as a rock goddess. Lzzy's range seems inhuman at times and the world has certainly taken notice—she was inducted into the Hall of Heavy Metal History on January 24, 2018. Her inspiration comes from the 1970s/80s hard rock kings that her father listened to, including Tom Kiefer of Cinderella and Black Sabbath. Other major influences for the band include Metallica, Nirvana and Soundgarden. Halestorm has often covered artists they admire. They’ve released three cover albums under the series title Reanimate, featuring tributes to artsits ranging from AC/DC to Lady GaGa. Their latest, Reanimate 3.0 was released in January 2017. Lzzy got her first guitar at 16 and went to "the dark side," as she calls it. She strums guitars such as her signature white alpine Gibson Explorer while belting hits like "I Miss the

Halestorm is known for their jaw-dropping performances with roaring encores and the dedication to their fans shines through in the rockers' vigorous touring schedules—sometimes playing shows more than 250 days out of the year. 2018 will be busy as usual; the band started touring North America and Canada with Stone Sour at the start of this year. Halestorm has toured with other respected rock groups, including Heaven and Hell with Ronnie James Dio, Disturbed and Avenged Sevenfold. Touring so much can't be easy but the four are certainly pros at it. They keep up their energy by following some simple wise tips—drink a lot of water, not so much alcohol and go to bed at a decent time.

In between shows, the group is putting together a highly anticipated new album. Halestorm started releasing teasers online letting fans know that they have been in the studio. In a November 2017 interview with Wisconsin radio station Razor 94.7, Lzzy excited fans revealing that album number four will be produced by Nick Raskulinecz, who among others, has worked with Rush, Alice In Chains, Korn and Deftones. The album will stay true to a hard rock sound and highlight Arejay's drumming abilities. "We have to make sure this rocks," said Lzzy. Halestorm has been together for two decades, forming a bond beyond music. Lzzy attributes the band’s success to truly enjoying being around each other. She believes that a sense of family is important to the group’s dynamic—"There’s something about playing with blood, man. You don’t break up the family, therefore you don’t break up the band… the other two might as well be adopted." LT
