The shaft is the most important fitting variable for golf clubs. The flex of the shaft is normally printed on the shaft or shaft label as:
Pro Tip
L–Ladies A or M–Senior R–Regular S–Stiff XS–Extra Stiff
For graphite, these ratings can be further subdivided based on the shaft's weight and to a lesser degree, the kick-points. Shaft weight is usually in step with the amount of torque. A heavier shaft at 70 grams or more will torque (twist) less than a light shaft in the 60 grams or less range. Consequently, a 75 gram S-flex shaft will have much different playing characteristics than a 55 gram S-flex shaft. As a general guide, your shaft flex can be matched to the club you use to hit a ball 150 yards:
Driver–L 5 wood–A or M 6 iron–R 8 iron–S Wedge–XS
And you can fill-in the gaps by choosing more or less weight.

Sushi literally translated means “vinegared rice” however there are many different kinds of sushi.
Gunkanmaki 軍艦巻 Gunkanmaki is a special type of nigirizushi known as the warship roll. It is an oval, hand-formed clump of rice enclosed or wrapped with seaweed (nori) to form a container that holds various soft, loose or finely chopped toppings.
Nigirizushi 握り寿司
Let’s SUSHI 101 寿司
Begin with white fish
and work your way down to the darker and fattier fish. This keeps the heavier fish flavors from overpowering the lighter ones.
R o ll !
Nigirizushi means “hand-pressed sushi.” This is a hand formed rectangle of sushi rice with a swipe of wasabi on top, finished with a slice of raw or cooked fish or shellfish on top.
Many of us have common misconceptions about the correct way to eat sushi.
Did you know that there is actually a proper way?
To eat sushi properly, pick it up and turn it fish-side down. Allow a small amount of soy sauce to touch the fish. The soy sauce should not touch the rice! Ginger should be eaten
DO NOT
mix wasabi into the soy sauce
between different types of sushi to serve as a palette cleanser for the next fish.
DO NOT
Sushi already has wasabi between the rice
and fish, so use sparingly. If adding extra wasabi, put a very small amount on your chopsticks and place it on top of the fish.
rub your chopsticks together after breaking them apart or you’ll signal to the chef that you think their utensils are cheap.
18 | Sushi 101
Place the sushi on your tongue
fish-side down so you taste the full flavor and freshness of the fish.
Eat the sushi piece all in one bite. Splitting it in half is considered rude to the chef.
Tamago, or egg sushi, takes the role of dessert.
The word sashimi means “pierced body” where sashi = pierced or stuck and mi = body. The term was coined by the method Japanese fishermen would use to kill the fish including piercing the brain and storing the fish in an ice bath. This method delays the decomposition process within the fish keeping it fresher, longer. Sashimi is a thinly sliced piece of meat served without rice. The sushi chef will likely arrange the sliced meat on top of fresh greens or thinly sliced daikon (Japanese radish) accompanied by wasabi and shoga (pickled ginger).
Cubes or Chunks
Fugusashi
Cut into long strips and sliced into cubes. Chunks are considerably thicker than a nigiri slice.
Thinly and uniformly sliced.
Fish Markets
Tataki The fish is thinly cut, T ccoated with ground or crushed ginger and o then lightly seared at th a high temperature.
Hachinohe Fish Market–Hachinohe Hasshoku Center 40.526724, 141.452761
Furukawa Fish Market–Aomori Aomori Gyosai Center 40.825871, 140.735936
Auga Fish Market–Aomori 40.827284, 140.735925
Sushi is meant to be eaten using only your hands however it has become acceptable to use chopsticks. Sashimi and ginger are always eaten with chopsticks.
Makizushi 巻鮨
Makizushi translates to rolled sushi. The fish, vegetables and rice are wrapped in seaweed (nori 海苔) but can be wrapped in a thin omelette, soy paper and even cucumber.
Tsukiji Nippon Fish Market–Tokyo 35.665512, 139.770678
Uramakizushi 裏巻き寿司
These rolls are inverted makizushi. The seaweed is on the inside with the rice on the outside. These rolls are often topped with sesame seeds or small fish eggs.
Chirashizushi 巻鮨
Chirashizushi translates to scattered sushi and is served in a bowl with sushi rice covered with various topping known as gu. This is meant to be a quick and easy meal in Japanese culture.
Temaki 手巻き
Temaki, or hand roll, is cone-shaped and has the rice and fillings on the inside and a piece of seaweed shaping the cone on the outside with ingredients coming out of the open end.
Inarizushi いなり寿司
Inarizushi is a pouch of fried tofu filled with only sushi rice. This type of sushi can be found at casual sushi restaurants such as kaiten sushi (conveyer belt sushi). It is meant to be a dessert as the fried tofu can be very sweet. Sushi 101 | 19
Ramen
JAPANESE Noodles
T
he different types of Japanese noodles and noodle-based dishes were developed based on the needs of the various regions and seasons of Japan. For example, mple, wheat-based noodles were first developed ed in western and southern Japan where wheat was grown, and cold noodle dishes were developed for the hot summer months experienced throughout the country. Many Japanese noodle dishes and their variations, like instant ramen, are now known the world over and can be found at grocery stores and restaurants in many major cities.
Fun Fact
Slurping your noodles is considered polite and shows the chef you are enjoying your food!
The complete rramen dish is Japanese but tthe ramen noodles themselves are originally from the 1950s, ramen was China. Until th called shina ssoba, meaning soba. The noodles get their Chinese soba yellow color from the ingredient mineral-rich salt water. kansui, a mi about ramen? Visit the ShinCrazy abou Yokohama Ramen Museum near Tokyo!
Shirataki
Shirataki noodles are a thin and gelatinous gelatino noodle with very little flavor. They The are made from konjaku (yam) starch and have been trending in s America the past couple of years A because they are very low in calories beca and gluten free. Homemade Peanut Butter Dog Treats INGREDIENTS: • • • •
DIRECTIONS:
2/3 cup pumpkin puree 1/4 cup peanut butter 2 large eggs 3 cups whole wheat flour, or more, as needed
• Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat and set aside. • In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment beat pumpkin puree, peanut butter and eggs on medium-high until well combined, about 1–2 minutes. Gradually add 2 1/2 cups flour at low speed, beating until just incorporated. Add an additional 1/4 cup flour at a time until the dough is no longer sticky.
• Working on a lightly floured surface, knead the dough 3–4 times until it comes together. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Using cookie cutters, cut out desired shapes and place onto the prepared baking sheet. • Place in the oven and bake until the edges are golden brown, about 20–25 minutes. • Let cool completely.
