MR. JOSHUA L. ROBERTS Josh is originally from Dayton, Ohio and arrived at Misawa during the summer of 2014. He has been working in the FSS Squadron as an IT Specialist since April 2015. Josh has been supporting all the tech and computer networking needs of FSS, and when called upon after hours, he has been steadfast in resolving emergency issues. He has a real talent for making “it happen when all else has seemed to fail. When not being a tech hero, Josh enjoys hanging with his wife and dog, playing drums and drinking a fine dram of whisky.

MS. MAYELY MUNCY Mayely Muncy is originally from Willis, Texas. She is an Air Force spouse and has been working at the Walmsley Bowling Center for two years. Through hard work and dedication she has managed to work her way up from Recreation Aid to Operations Clerk and now she is doing an amazing job as the Assistant Manager. She has taken over as manager on several occasions when the position was vacant or the manager was on leave. Mayely is a highly proactive leader that puts the community needs first. She creates programs, looks for cost savings to lower prices and consistently seeks customer feedback. She is a world traveler and is currently seeking a bachelor's degree in business administration with an expected graduation date of May 2018. Stop by the Walmsley Bowling Center to say hi anytime! photo by 35 Fighter Wing Public Affairs

着物 THE KIMONO

A HISTORY OF TRADITION By Matthew Busby

T

he kimono, perhaps the most recognizable Japanese article of clothing, had humble beginnings dating over 1,000 years ago. During the 700's, the Japanese wore separate garments as their daily clothing consisting of upper and lower garments. This was influenced by Chinese clothing during Japan's Nara period (710–794) when Chinese missionaries came to Japan to spread Buddhism and Confucianism. It was not until the Heian period (794–1185) that a straight-line cutting method was introduced to create what is now known as the kimono. This type of cutting technique made it more comfortable and practical to wear. The Muromachi period (1392– 1568) gave birth to the traditional style of the kimono we know today as complete with the decorated sash that keeps the garment together, the obi. At this time, the samurai replaced the court nobles who always wore ceremonial clothing and lived in castle towns. It became important for clothing to be more wearable for travel and outdoor life. Samurai would wear the kimono with the hakama, or skirt, worn on top which provided easier mobility when traveling on horseback. In addition, the kimono is a comfortable garment for people to wear in a kneeled or sitting position such as the tatami mats commonly found in Japanese homes. The literal translation of the word kimono is "thing to wear." The word only came into use in the late nineteenth century as a way to distinguish native clothing from Western clothing. Women's kimonos became decorative as early as the Edo period (1600–1868). Today, many

variations of the kimono exist from the formal traditional kimono to the casual yukata for summer use. Traditionally, Japanese clothing has not been accented with costly or decorative accessories. Thus, developments in the kimono as the central garment for men and women of all social standings revolved around patterns and colors with intricate designs stretching across the entire garment. The kimono has the versatility to be either formal or relatively casual based on the fabric, pattern and accessories. To complete the female kimono look, many pieces are needed including the juban (undergarment), a koshi himo belt, a datejime (a sash tied to keep the kimono neckband's shape), an obi sash, white tabi socks, and the zori or formal sandal. For men, a haori jacket, haori himo (belt that replaces the obi), hakama (skirt worn on top of the kimono), white tabi socks and zori are needed. For men, kimonos have always denoted rank and occupation such as which feudal lord one served or a family crest, while for women, kimono style usually denotes one's age as well as the length of the sleeve. A longer sleeve marks a single woman while shorter sleeves denote a married woman. The yukata is a casual version of the traditional kimono that is made of cotton or synthetic fabric wrapped around the body and fastened with an obi or sash. The literal translation of yukata is "bathing cloth" and was originally intended to be worn at an onsen. Recently, the yukata has also become a way of dressing during the summer, especially for festivals. Yukata for men generally have darker or more

subdued colors, while younger women wear bright and colorful floral designs. The palette grows more subdued with dark hues as a woman marries and matures. Depending on the event, a variety of formal or casual kimonos can be appropriate. A lavish kimono will be worn by Japanese women when attending a traditional wedding, while a casual and bright yukata can be worn during summer festivals or lounging around the home. A yukata tends to have less pieces than the traditional kimono due to the warm weather associated with its use. Instead of the traditional zori, yukatas are worn with wooden elevated sandals called geta.

Prices of kimonos vary greatly depending on quality of fabric, design and dye process. On average, a silk kimono will cost around ¥24,000 whereas a cotton yukata costs about ¥4,000. The obi sash is one of the most difficult parts of the kimono wrapping process, however it is the most versatile. A woman can wear the same kimono for many years but recreate her style with a new obi. Second hand shops are the most cost-effective way to purchase kimonos of any type and quality and can be found throughout Japan. One convenient second-hand kimono shop is in Towada-shi named Yu Yu Kimono Shop1 or ゆうゆう in Japanese. The shop sells kimonos for adults and children, and each piece of the kimono is purchased separately. Once you have found a kimono or yukata that suits your style, be sure to enter in the 3rd Annual Yukata Fashion Show on Saturday, July 29! 1

Providing Families Easy Access to Child Care MilitaryChildCare.com has arrived at Misawa Air Base! Whether you’re a soon-to-be, rst-time parent or a veteran parent to school age children, nding the right child care for your family can seem like a daunting task. MilitaryChildCare.com (MCC) is the Department of Defense (DoD) website that makes this mission a lot easier by providing families with one central place for nding and requesting child care on Misawa Air Base or wherever your next base might be. The new DoD site – which has been introduced worldwide across all Services – offers a streamlined approach to nding and requesting care and enables families to create a household prole, conduct child care searches, and submit and manage their care requests. To begin the process, simply create an account on the secure DoD website. Then begin your search for care, customizing the search to your needs and preferences, such as physical distance, type of child care program, and hours of care needed. Because MilitaryChildCare.com is a DoD-wide website, your search results will include child care options across all Military Services that meet your search criteria. Once you have reviewed your results – which typically will include program overviews and photos – you may choose one or more options and submit your requests. MilitaryChildCare.com will automatically place you on waitlists for those programs and notify you when space becomes available. Families may remain on a preferred program’s waitlist even after being offered or enrolling in another program. At any time, you can log back on to the website and make changes to your prole or requests for care. One of the best features about MilitaryChildCare.com is that you can access the site and submit requests for care from any place and at any time. For additional information, go to MilitaryChildCare.com or contact the Help Desk by calling the toll free number 855-696-2934 or emailing FamilySupport@MilitaryChildCare.com.
