PRO’S CORNER Want to lower your score? Of course everyone wants to play better and lower their handicap. One of the fastest ways to lower your score is to practice your short game. Putting, chipping and pitching account for 60– 70% of your score. It makes sense to work on the area that makes up the largest percentage of your round. As a huge bonus, the practice putting green and practice chipping and pitching areas are FREE to use. No excuses, get out there and practice. With just a bit of practice, you will see your scores go down and your enjoyment go up. See you at the course! Robert E. Jacobus General Manager / Head Professional 11

Mt. Fuji By Samantha Trimble

L

ocated near the Pacic coast of central Honshu, roughly 100 kilometers west of Tokyo, Mt. Fuji towers over Japan at 12,388 feet and is the tallest mountain in the country. Mt. Fuji has become the most popular tourist destination in Japan and is arguably the most climbed mountain on Earth, with some 300,000 adventurers visiting every year from all over the world to meet the clouds over Japan. Mt. Fuji is one of the three holy mountains in Japan, named after the Buddhist goddess of re, Fuchi. Mt. Fuji is also an active volcano, though it’s last eruption was December 6, 1707. The Fuji Five Lakes surround the peak, adding to the incredible view from the top, as well 474 square miles of Hakone Izu National Park. An anonymous Japanese monk rst conquered the mountain in 1663 A.D. Since then, Mt. Fuji has become a beacon for wanderlust, with a third of climbers venturing from other countries each year. The mountain now has many facilities, including its own post office. Souvenir shops sell the basics—food, drinks, supplies, and even “canned

summit air.” Climbing season is only permitted during summer months— early July through mid-September, as temperatures at Fuji’s peak hover around a chilly ve degrees Fahrenheit, throughout the warmest season. Mt. Fuji consists of ten stations, with roads leading only as far as the fth stations. Ascent and decent depends on which station climbers start from. Most choose to begin at station ve. There are four stations at level ve, each on different sides of the mountain. Ascent from a fth station is generally around six hours and descent a couple of hours shorter. Stations offer facilities, snacks and sleeping huts, but sleeping huts need to be booked in advance and paid for through the Fujiyoshida City website. Climbers who purchase walking sticks can pay to have them stamped at each station as a token of their journey. Though Mt. Fuji does not require advanced climbing skills, the air is noticeably thinner when reaching higher altitudes and some of the terrain can be dangerous— steep in places, with large or loose rocks and other obstacles. Wind gusts and lingering snow patches are also a factor to be weary of. In Japanese fashion, the summit provides vending machines, food and beverages to quench climbers’ appetites while on top of the world. For many, conquering Mt. Fuji is a spiritual and emotional feat that tests will and strength, both physically and mentally, with each person’s

experience different from the next. It is not recommended to climb in darkness without rest—a climbing style referred to as “bullet climbing,” but many plan their ascent to reach the summit in the early morning, to view the sunrise from above the earth—a truly once in a lifetime experience. No matter how one chooses to take on this natural wonder, the humbling memories created and awe-inspiring sights are well worth the trip. To the Japanese, Fuji is sacred and scaling the mount can awake strength and clarity within oneself that was previously inept. “Aspire to be like Mt. Fuji, with such a broad and solid foundation that the strongest earthquake cannot move you and so tall that the greatest enterprises of common men seem insignicant from your lofty perspective. With your mind as high as Mt. Fuji you can see all things clearly. And you can see all the forces that shape events; not just the things happening near to you.” –Miyamoto Musashi LT

trip to Japan’s largest city is a necessity for anyone stationed in Misawa. In Tokyo, tradition mixes with futuristic trends to create one of the most diverse cities in the world.

Tokyo is also one of the largest cities in the world, spanning 2,188 square kilometers, 23 wards and packed with over 13 million people. The sprawling layout of Tokyo can be intimidating for even the most seasoned traveler, so we’ve hand-picked these experiences to help you start planning your trip.

Food ARCHI & S H O TECTURE Drink P P I N G An architectural masterpiece, St. Mary’s Cathedral, features a futuristic look with curved walls that reach up to the sky to form a cross. Depending on the time of day and location of the sun, rays of sunlight beam through the windows to illuminate various sections of the cathedral. For a breathtaking view, ride the elevator to the top of Tokyo Tower. Inspired by the Eiffel Tower, Tokyo Tower is 333 meters high and is the tallest, self-supported steel tower in the world. Ginza is home to several impressive buildings, including De Beers Ginza and the Nakagin Capsule Tower. Looking like something out of Alice in Wonderland, De Beers Ginza appears liquied. The Nakagin Capsule Tower was an experimental project in the 1970’s and houses apartments made of capsules. Tours of the capsule apartments are available on Airbnb.

For the freshest seafood, visit one of the numerous sushi restaurants in the Tsukiji Fish Market. Many of these eateries make their sushi with sh that was caught and purchased from the market that same morning. If you wake up particularly early, you can watch the famous tuna auction at the market. Be prepared, you’ll need to arrive around 3 a.m. to reserve your spot.

Tokyo Ramen Street at Tokyo Station hosts eight ramen shops, each with its own different avors. Whether you like shio or miso, Tokyo Ramen Street has it all. Sample sake at the Japan Sake and Shochu Information Center, then learn about Japanese beer at the Beer Museum Yebisu; complete with tasting. Tokyo is home to a variety of delicious street foods. To get the full experience, grab some mitarashi dango, tempura, yakisoba, yakitori or takoyaki.

For a luxury shopping experience head to Ginza, Tokyo’s upscale shopping district. Ginza is home to multi-level stores like Mitsukoshi, one of Japan’s largest department stores. Enjoy exceptional customer service as you survey oor after oor of merchandise. If you are looking for Japanese souvenirs to bring back home, Nakamise-Dori in Asakusa is a street lled with Japanese trinkets. Nakamise-Dori is rumored to be one of the oldest shopping streets in Japan and is very popular with tourists.

You’ll nd everything you didn’t know you needed at Tokyu Hands. This department store centers on hobby, home improvement and lifestyle products. Shop here to nd nearly anything from craft supplies to beauty products to travel gear. Kids and adults alike will love shopping at Tokyo Character Street. Shops teem with well-loved characters like Pokemon and Hello Kitty. LT
