A wise man will climb Mt. Fuji once. A fool will climb Mt. Fuji twice. –Japanese proverb

18 | TWC: Mt. Fuji

At 3,776 meters high, Mt. Fuji is Japan’s highest mountain and the most climbed mountain in the world with over 300,000 climbers every year.

M

t. Fuji rose to prominence in Japanese culture while being frequently seen from the Tokaido road by individuals travelling to Edo (now Tokyo) after it became the capital of Japan in 1603. Being beautiful to gaze upon as a nearperfect volcanic cone, it became the subject of literature and paintings, and with its vast size became a goal for determined climbers.

HELPFUL

TIPS

Legend has it an anonymous monk was the rst to reach the summit in 663. It is a true bucket list item for many individuals not only as a challenging climb, but as a special way to connect with the nation of Japan.

ITT is offering several Mt. Fuji climb trips this summer which include round trip transportation, accommodations and a tour escort. After the climb, there will be a free day to explore Tokyo on your own, giving you time to relax and enjoy your trip. The travel experts at ITT can also help with reservations and travel advice if you decide to make the journey on your own. If you go this route, it is recommended you spend the night on the mountain and experience goraiko, the Japanese word for seeing the sunrise from Mt. Fuji. The overwhelming feelings from the breathtaking beauty and stillness are described as a spiritual experience.

Mt. Fuji Climb Tour B Thursday–Sunday, Aug. 17–20 On sale Tuesday, June 13

Mt. Fuji Climb Tour C Thursday–Sunday, Aug. 24–27 On sale Wednesday, June 14 Adults $360 Ages 4–11 $250 Ages 0–3 $80 Additional fees apply for single occupancy. You will have 13 hours to climb up and come down from the 5th station of Mt. Fuji. This trip includes round trip transportation by bus, three nights of accommodations at The New Sanno Hotel and a tour escort.

• Make sure your hiking boots are waterproof and you bring rain gear. The weather on Mt. Fuji is very unpredictable. • Bring cold and warm weather gear. The difference in temperature from the base to the summit is 20 degress Celcius. • Bring extra Yen and your own toilet tissue. There is a small fee to use the restroom facilities and you must pay to use the toilet tissue.
