he art of Kabuki can be traced back to the Edo period (1603–1867) and is one of Japan’s major classical theatres, along with noh and bunraku. Because Kabuki is a timeless and beloved national tradition, it has been named a part of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and remains much the same today as when it was rst developed.
T
In the past, Kabuki theatres were popular among the common class and could be found mostly in larger cities. Modern Kabuki theatres may be found in a variety of locations throughout Japan. Kabuki shows generally last all day and are usually broken up into two or three segments that consist of acts. Based on the theatre, tickets can be sold per show, segment or even act. Prices range from Ұ2,000 per act to Ұ25,000 per segment, depending on seating. When Kabuki theatre rst began, roles were acted out only by women. During the later part of the Edo period, the Tokugawa Shogunate government took more of an ownership over the art and forbid women to act. Today, all Kabuki roles are acted by men and those who specialize in portraying female characters are called “onnagata.” Traditional Kabuki plots are often based on historical events with themes ranging from love and tragedy to drama or moral conict. Kabuki scripts are taken from written works—the climax or another interesting part of the story. Theatre-goers can read the original work in full before attending the show. Much like Western Shakespearean plays, traditional Kabuki stories are written in an old form of the Japanese language, which can be hard to understand no matter how uent one is in Japanese. Because of this, vigorous gestures and movements are used to capture the audience’s attention and narrate through movement. Music is a vital part of Kabuki performances and an orchestra made up of traditional Japanese instruments completes each scenes’ mood. Elaborate costumes, over-the-top makeup, wigs, and intricately-designed, mobile and revolving sets make Kabuki unique among other dramatic arts. Trapdoors and even footbridges (hamach) give the actors tools for quick, dramatic entries and exits, sometimes through the audience aisles. “Kuroko” assist with these sets and props, dressed in all black. Though these crew members will be seen on stage throughout the show, it is customary to pretend not to notice. Though four centuries old, Kabuki is bold, inventive and fascinating. Kabuki is a family business; an inherited art form passed down from generation to generation. Kabuki actors are known by their “yago” or stage name. These stage names are given by family members and based on the theatre troupe to which actors belong. Audience members will often call out an actor's yago at an appropriate time during the performance as an act of respect. When a spectator prepares to attend a Kabuki play, dress codes are not required. Still, Japanese women often wear a traditional kimono, especially on opening night. Many venues are westernized and offer English headsets and/or programs, though some still have traditional Japanese-style seating. Though Kabuki is deep-seated in tradition, many modern K a b u k i theatres have contemporary shows as well, with comedy, singing and more modern story plots. Kabuki theatre offers a tale for everyone, no matter their interests and delivers theatre in a way that challenges perception and captivates the audience. LT

The
Japanese Tea Ceremony
茶の湯 by Matthew Busby
18
This winter, I experienced the Japanese Tea Ceremony, or Chanoyu, at the Hōjū-ji Temple in Kyoto. Just before the ceremony, I walked around the quiet temple grounds, giving me a sense of peacefulness and self-awareness. I walked through the sliding doors of the main hall onto the tatami mats. As I walked towards the table in the center of the room, I noticed the meticulous level of care that had gone into the preparation, decoration and cleanliness of the room as well as the simplicity of the tools, signaling that this ritual was more than merely a rigid set of rules, but a spiritual practice. The Japanese tea ceremony is an embodiment of Zen Buddhist philosophy of appreciating the beauty of ordinary life through thoughtful practice and meditation.
Origins Originally from China, green tea was once consumed only by monasteries and within the aristocracy. It was not until a Buddhist monk returned home to Kyoto and planted green tea seeds on the grounds of the Daitoku-ji Temple that green tea started growing in Japan. They then rened and crushed the tea leaves into a powder creating what we now know today as matcha. Matcha comes in ceremonial grade, the highest quality and culinary grade which also has its own subtypes. The ceremony I participated in was relatively quick and simple, however, this is not always the case. In the 14th and 15th centuries, Zen Buddhist masters altered the ceremony to serve tea in a humble manner meant to enhance the spirit. One tea master named Sen no Rikyu stripped the ritual down to its core using only simple utensils to prepare and drink the matcha tea. The lack of decoration in the tearoom is intentional, as participants should only focus on the careful details of each movement to evoke and appreciate simplicity, naturalness, respect, harmony and purity. One is to look inside themselves to nd true spiritual wealth with no attachment to material objects.
Matcha 抹茶
Matcha, originally from Kyoto, is a ne-powdered form of green tea. The green tea plants that will eventually become matcha are shaded for up to ve weeks, usually in spring, which gives it the strongest avor. The leaves are then harvested, steamed, dried and ground into a ne powder. The main difference between matcha and brewed tea, is that with matcha you drink the entire tea leaf in powder form and are able to reap the benets of all its nutrients.
Tea Ceremony Preparation Guests must spiritually prepare themselves before entering the ceremony by leaving their worldly worries behind. They must wait for the host to announce them before entering the room and wash their hands to symbolically remove the dust from the outside world. Once in the room, everyone is treated as equals. The tools used in the ceremony will be cleansed in front of the guests. Each movement is designed aesthetically and done with complete concentration. There are no frivolous movements made nor words spoken. Sweets are served and eaten, before the matcha tea is provided, to balance out the bitterness of the tea. A common sweet seen is wagashi, made with mochi, anko (bean paste) and fruit.
Matcha Preparation Utensils: rice or tea bowl (chawan) linen tea cloth (chakin) kettle (kama) bamboo scoop (chashaku)
bamboo whisk (chasen) matcha matcha sifter ( furui)
Directions for Usucha (thin matcha): Ï Heat water and pour into the tea bowl until 1/3 full Ï Place the bamboo whisk into the tea bowl so that the prongs are wet Ï Once the bowl is heated from the water, empty out the water and dry the bowl with the linen tea cloth Ï Using the matcha sifter, remove any potential clumps of the powder Ï Use the bamboo scoop and measure three scoops and place the powder into the warm tea bowl Ï Measure 2.3 ounces of hot water Ï Let water cool before pouring into the tea bowl Ï Once the water is added into the tea bowl, use the bamboo whisk to mix the powder and water together. Ï Rapidly whisk in a W pattern until a thick froth has formed Note: You can also make koicha, thick matcha, by using similar tools.
Receiving & Drinking Tea Ï Place sweet given by the host onto folded paper before eating
Ï Put the bowl in front of your knees and thank the host
Ï Turn the bowl so that the kiln mark is facing you
Ï Eat the sweet by using a cake pick for moist sweets or your hands for dry sweets
Ï Put the bowl in the palm of your left hand
Ï Put the bowl down on the tatami mat in front of you with elbows above your knees
Ï When given the tea bowl, place it between you and the next guest
Ï Turn the bowl so that the kiln mark is away from your lips
Ï Bow to excuse yourself for going rst
Ï Raise the bowl slightly and bow
Ï Drink and wipe the place you drank from with your ngers
Ï Pick up the bowl to admire it at a low position near the tatami mat Ï When returning the bowl, ensure the kiln mark is facing the host 19

SPOTLIGHT Natasha Wilson
M
rs. NaTasha Wilson was born in Okinawa, Japan and grew up in a military family that bounced all over the world. She spent the most time in Dover, DE where her mother retired and this is where she met her husband. This is NaTasha's second tour at Misawa Air Base, both times she has been an incredible asset at the Airman & Family Readiness Center. She is in charge of relocation, sponsorship, the key spouse program and assists with the cultural city tours. In the past year the A&FRC has been devastated with stafďƒžng shortages and NaTasha has stepped up repeatedly to help out her team when they are in need. When she is not working, she enjoys spending time with her family, crafting, baking and traveling. One of her goals is to obtain her Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) credential so she can continue to work for the military and help service members and their families. Lastly, if you think you have good cupcakes, please bring them to NaTasha, as she would love to be a judge on cupcake wars... She says, "I have a pallet made for it". 29
