Coastal Kayaking
Saturday, June 19 Departs at 7 a.m. $30 R4R price $45 per person | Ages 16+ (parental supervision required under age 18)
Experience the wonder of the Japanese coastline like never before and our “devotion to the ocean” with salt water paddling. These tours trace rocky, volcanic coastlines of our favorite spots in Mutsu Bay, the Pacific Ocean, or even in the Sea of Japan! For each trip, we will pick the best location based on our knowledge of the weather, wind and waves. While moderately physically challenging, novices can use sit-ontop kayaks and those with more experience can opt for a sea kayak; we can teach you skills in either one! This activity is moderately physically challenging, basic swimming ability is recommended.
Curious about the underwater world? Want to know what it feels like to breath underwater? Join our professional certified instructor for a few hours of fun in the warm, safe waters of the Himberg Pool. This will be your chance to know if a full PADI certification is right for you.

Our mothers are responsible for teaching us so much about life in general from walking, to talking, to brushing our teeth and tying our shoes. Mothers pick themselves up everyday rain or shine and make the most selfless decision to love, teach and cherish us as individuals. When I think of my mother or my friends and family who are mothers, my mind is immediately filled with things that are

A simple flower and a thank you once a year on Mother’s Day can mean very much to a mom since many of the things they do tend to go unnoticed or are under-appreciated. After thinking of all of this I personally don’t think a flower is the best representation of a mother. In truth, anything that reminds you of your mom and her sacrifices of love can represent a mother, even a flower. I just feel that after you add up all the things your mother does, a flower could not compare to the beauty of her worth. Now, you may be thinking,

Well miss know-it-all, what represents a mother to you then?

Yes, I know how that sounds at first, but allow me to explain. In nature you would be hard pressed to find a greater example of a mother. Many things that elephant mothers do to care for their young align with how human mothers care for their children. From a young age, female elephants take an interest in becoming mothers. As they grow older they assist the older female elephants in caring for their young. This hands-on experience teaches the female elephant how to later take care of her own children. After a nearly two year long pregnancy an elephant mother gives birth. If you had to stop and read that a few more times because it sounds insane, welcome back to the article. When I was researching I had to look over it a few times myself. About 30 minutes after birth, elephant babies are able to stand on their own and can even walk soon afterwards. The mother elephants in the herd the baby elephants from predators as they travel.

As an elephant baby grows and begins teething, the elephant will change her diet if it means giving her baby some comfort, similar to mothers that breastfeed. The elephant mother switches out her normal food choices for those that contain anti-inflammatory properties to help ease the baby’s aching gums.

Throughout childhood, baby elephants learn the basics of life, like how to find food and spot predators, from their mother. Elephants are also known to show each other affection. They can kiss and hug loved ones with their trunk, develop life-long friendships and even mourn the passing of loved ones. All of these things are very similar with how our mothers interact with us as children.
Elephants E lep phan nts a are re amazing am maz zin ng cr creatures reatture es and are recognized in many different cultures and religions all over the world. They are highly respected and often represent strength, wisdom, endurance and intelligence. You can see their likeness used in spiritual symbols, such as mandalas. When an elephant is used in a mandala it is thought to bring prosperity. This Mother’s Day we at 35 FSS hope all mothers enjoy a relaxing break by coloring our inserted coloring page.

35 FSS Spotlight Junko Koutsuka Pet Kennel Director
What is your favorite part about working for the Pet Kennel? It is definitely when the pets are being picked up by their owner. They are always wagging their tails and showing how happy they are to see their owner again. Even if it is only for one night’s stay, it always makes me so overjoyed to see how happy both the pet owner and pet are to see each other. What do you wish the Misawa community knew about your programs? Boarding pets on Misawa Air Base is our main mission, but we also offer so many other services that you may not know about. We offer dog obedience training, grooming, Doggie Daycare, and we even sell dog food and pet supplies. I am so lucky to have the best team where your pet will not only receive the best care, but be pampered too! Whether you need pet care on the weekends, vacation, TDY, long deployment, or during a PCS, we are able to provide the space, care and activities your pet needs. Dogs have a large outdoor area for running and cats enjoy the privacy of a cat cottage and the Catio. We love what we do and the Misawa Pet Kennel is our pride and joy. Our job is making your pets happy! What is your favorite memory working for the Pet Kennel? I honestly cannot pick one, there are just too many! But one of my favorite memories is the “mascot prank”. I love to dress up in the Pet Kennel mascot (Dino-J) to surprise customers and pets. I love to see the reactions of both the pets and the owners!

Join Outdoor Recreation at the Base Beach this summer for one of our upcoming sweat socials! These classes will offer a variety of exercises including weightlifting, sand sprints, beach biking, athletic conditioning and more. Finish it all off with a refreshing beverage (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) and take in the beautiful sights and surroundings while enjoying your hard-earned endorphin rush!
Want to change up your leg day routine? We are taking your workout to the beach and hitting the sand with our FAT Bikes to give you a view and get your blood pumping. Gear, transportation and a refreshing beverage (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) to finish your workout are included.
