WHAT IS MILITARY SPOUSE PREFERENCE?
The spouse of an active duty member of the Military Services, who relocates via a permanent change of station (PCS) move as a sponsored dependent, to the military sponsor’s new permanent duty station is entitled to military spouse preference (MSP) for all positions in the commuting area of the new duty station being filled under competitive procedures. Make sure to upload your PCS orders when you apply for a position.
WHEN DO YOU LOSE YOUR MILITARY SPOUSE PREFERENCE?
You lose MSP when you accept or decline a Regular category position with NAF (non-appropriated funds), Appropriated funds (GS positions), or AAFES (BX). You also lose your MSP if you decline an invitation to the interview for Regular category positions. However you DO NOT LOSE the Military Spouse Preference if you accept or decline FLEX positions.
HOW MANY TIMES CAN YOU USE THE MILITARY SPOUSE PREFERENCE?
You can apply with Military Spouse Preference without limit. Military Spouses will be referred using Military Spouse Preference until such time as they accept or decline a Regular category position, or fail to maintain eligibility, or are no longer interested in being referred.
DO I STILL HAVE MILITARY SPOUSE PREFERENCE IF I GOT MARRIED AFTER MY SPOUSE WAS ALREADY STATIONED IN MISAWA?
No, to be entitled for Military Spouse Preference the spouse must:
• Have married the military sponsor prior to the date of the military sponsor’s orders authorizing a permanent change of station.
• When applying for a position, submit a copy of the Permanent Change of Station (PCS) orders, identifying a dependents-authorized move and the sponsor’s reporting date to the new duty location, AND a copy of the marriage license.
WHO QUALIFIES FOR FAMILY MEMBER PREFERENCE?
Family members are the spouse, or unmarried dependent children, including stepchildren, adopted children, and foster children not more than 23 years of age, residing with a member of the U.S. Armed Forces or a U.S. citizen civilian employee of a U.S. Government Agency (APF employee, AAFES employees.)
FSS SPOTLIGHT
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT WORKING AT THE MILITARY & FAMILY READINESS CENTER (M&FRC)?
When a former client shares feedback that my resume tips landed them a job offer. I also enjoy working with wonderful coworkers and a superb, supportive supervisor.
WHAT DO YOU WISH THE MISAWA COMMUNITY KNEW ABOUT M&FRC PROGRAMS?
My Spouse Education and Career Opportunities (MySECO) offers FREE career coaching services to military spouses. They assist with resumes, interviewing skills, education resources and much more. Department of Labor offers FREE employment workshops each month for veterans, active duty members and military spouses. Additionally, we have a Misawa Job Board filled with current job openings.
WHAT IS YOUR BEST MEMORY WORKING AT M&FRC?
My temporary duty (TDY) to Denver, CO in 2022 for Basic Transition & Employment Management (BTEM). This event was great for networking and learning from other M&FRC professionals. I have also enjoyed our office teambuilding events.

7 POIN T CHECK
FREE during Military Spouse Appreciation Month
* We will notify you if we identify issues with your vehicle that will require additional fees and services.
TIRES
The tires are vital to safety. Checking the tread is an important part of this check because making sure that there is enough tread is important for making sure that there is traction. The tires are looked at for cracks in the tread and shoulder. Uneven wear in the tires may be signs of an alignment or a tire balance issue.
LIGHTS
When the sun is not out it is important that you can see while driving, but what is more important is that others can see you as well. The headlights, brakes and blinkers will be checked to make sure they are functioning properly. Prices on changing bulbs and the bulbs themselves will vary.
EXHAUST
The exhaust system is known for varying temperatures. Over time, parts of the exhaust system will rust and cause leaks. This check will determine this and what will need to be done to repair it.
BELTS
The belts will be different in every car, but belts don’t last forever. This check is good to show whether the belts are loose, worn down, or cracked. In colder temperatures, you may hear noises from belts, but there may be issues causing that to happen.
The radiator has two hoses that go to the top and bottom tanks. The upper hose is where the fluid comes from the engine and the bottom cycles the fluid back into the engine. Inspecting the quality of the hoses is important because after time, they wear down. If the hose is deformed or has a hole, then the hose needs to be replaced.
FLUIDS
Maintaining all the fluids in your car is a “must-do” for increasing the longevity of your car. Anti-Freeze/coolant, brake fluid, engine oil, transmission oil, power steering fluid and windshield washer fluid are checked. These are not oil changes or fluid flushes, the levels are checked and topped off, all for $6 regardless of how much fluid is used.
