Gosser Golf Course SPRING SCRAMBLE Tournament

Come to the golf course during the month of May and enjoy a free round on the new Park Golf Course. Play as many holes as you like while enjoying the sunshine and warming temperatures.

Park Golf, paku gorufu, was invented in Makubetsu, Hokkaido, Japan in 1983 and is also called Ground Golf. The founders of the sport wanted to keep it simple so that people of all ages could easily play the game. This makes it a fun outdoor activity and we designed our course for families and children of all ages. On the Japanese courses outside the gate, you will find that the majority of the 700,000+ Park Golf players in Japan are retirees. Culturally, there is a strong emphasis on harmony with other players and the natural setting of the course. Americans tend to see Park Golf as a cross between croquet and mini-golf.

Saturday, May 20 • 6:30 a.m. Shotgun Annual Golf Car Pass Holders Annual Pass & Punch Card Holders Other SOFA Personnel Authorized LN Personnel

Entry fee includes: Golf fees, lunch, tee favors and prizes Sign-up deadline: Wednesday, May 17 at noon For more information: Call 957–1563

There are Park Golf courses located throughout Japan and the fees are usually very inexpensive. Nearby, Kaywayo Green Farm features a beautiful 36-hole course and is located only about 20 minutes from Misawa AB in the town of Oirase.

JAPANESE

Flower Festivals One of the most stunning gifts of nature in Japan is the flood of color from blooming flowers in the spring. To celebrate, the Japanese have a wealth of festivals that center around hanami, or flowerviewing. This tradition usually consists of having a picnic with hot food and sake under the blooming trees.

by Lindsey Franceschi

*All flower festival dates are selected based on forecasts by the Japan Meterological Corporation. All days are dependent on the weather and subject to change.

Hanami began in the Nara period, 710–794 A.D., with the celebration of the ume (plum) blossoms. By the Heian period, 794–1185 A.D., the sakura (cherry) blossom became more popular and replaced the ume blossom as the premier flower of the spring season. Hundreds of years later, the term hanami is synonymous with sakura viewing. Japan's sakura festivals are world famous, drawing over 1.5 million viewers every year. The hanami season is as brief as it is beautiful, only lasting about two weeks. Fortunately, Japan has a variety of flowers that come into bloom throughout the spring and summer with many opportunities to appreciate them.

Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival Coordinates: 40.608417, 140.463467 April 22–May 7 Take part in hanami at Hirosaki park, one of the premier sakura gardens in Japan. At the center of the festival is 400 year-old Hirosaki Castle.

FSS Spotlight MR. ANTHONY CALABRO

Originally from London, England, Anthony and has been working at the OVERSTREET MEMORIAL LIBRARY since November 2010. As a Library Technician, Anthony manages the check-out counter and is one of the first people customers see when entering the LIBRARY. For Anthony, working with customers is always fun. One of the most interesting things that Anthony loves to do is manage the inter-library loan program where he researches Air Force libraries across the globe to find that one special book that a customer is requesting. When he is not helping library guests find the perfect book, Anthony enjoys any type of outdoor recreation with friends.
