Swing Path If you visualize a birds-eye view of your address position, you can think of your feet as being on one railroad track and your club as sitting on the other railroad track. If you are right-handed and your clubhead is moving across that track and to the left at impact, then your swing path is “outside in” and will cause a slice. An outside in path is usually the result of starting the downswing with the arms and hands instead of the legs, hips and torso. From the top of your backswing, start with the big muscles and save the smaller faster muscles for accelerating the clubhead down the track. If that change makes you push your shots, that is a good sign and you just need more/faster supination and pronation of the wrists into the followthrough.

Oirase Gorge Hakkoda Mountains Difficulty Level: Varies | Dog Friendly | Distance: Varies Coordinates: 40.652831, 140.908438 These beautiful mountains are a set of volcanic peaks known for their seasonal beauty and activities including hiking, skiing and hot springs. The mountain develops autumn colors at the summit around late September and reach the base of the mountain by mid-October. Use the Hokkada Ropeway to reach the peak of Tamoyachidake for scenic views of Mutsu Bay and even Hokkaido. A circular hiking trail leads from the upper ropeway station to a small marshland near the peak in about 45–60 minutes round trip. Depending on your skill level, you can choose trails with a variety of difficulty levels. 12 | Travel with Confidence: Take a Hike
Difficulty: 1 out of 5 | Dog Friendy Distance: 8.9 km (2–3 hours) Coordinates: 40.551244, 140.973644 Journey through Yakeyama and the foot of the Hakkoda mountains to arrive at the Oirase Gorge spanning 14 kilometers. Hiker's of all skill levels can enjoy this easy walking path to view the autumn scenery and a dozen cascading waterfalls along the way. Take photos along the rapids or the expansive woods. A museum sits at the mouth of the gorge for souvenirs and even bike rentals.
Shirakami-sanchi Difficulty: 5 out of 5 Distance: 19 km (6–8 hours) Coordinates: 40.502201, 140.015476 This is one of the toughest hiking trails mentioned on this list. Mount Shirakami has been deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the largest remaining beech tree forests in East Asia. This mountain is home to the black bear and development is restricted to keep the forest preserved. Visitors are not allowed in the core area of the forest unless you request a permit. Shirakami-sanchi is home to Anmon Falls, also mentioned on this list, the Juniko lakes and Nihon Canyon. The roads to the latter locations are only accessible from April–early November.
Anmon Falls
Mount Hachimantai
Difficulty Level: 2 out of 5 Distance: 8 km (2–3 hours) Coordinates: 40.518613, 140.183801 This hike can be done between early July and early November. Anmon falls is part of Shirakami Sanchi, a World Heritage beech forest located in western Aomori Prefecture and features a three-tiered waterfall. This hike is a great escape from the crowds of nearby Hirosaki City. The trailhead is only accessible from May–early November. Due to the slight elevation change and potentially slippery conditions we recommend you bring proper water proof/resistant gear and watch your step!
Difficulty Level: 1 out of 5 Distance: 2–8 km Coordinates: 39.956792, 140.854821 This destination can actually be reached while driving instead of hiking, however, the views from the top are spectacular especially with the changing of the seasons. The summit has an observation deck where you can view the tree tops and a few walking trails which can take anywhere between 30 minutes to two hours to complete.
Yamadera Difficulty Level: 3 out of 5 Distance: 3–8 km (1–4 hours) Coordinates: 38.312047, 140.434874 Yamadera is a small village located at the base of steep cliffs. Purchase your pass for ¥300 at the Sanmon entrance gate to ascend the 1,000 steps to the top. Along the journey up, stone idols are laid along the path. At the top you will be greeted with the beautiful Nokyodo perfectly positioned at the forefront of a pictureesc mountainscape.
Mount Zao Difficulty: 1 out of 5 | Dog Friendly Distance: Varies Coordinates: 38.142000, 140.443000 An active volcanic mountain range bordering the Yamagata and Miyagi Prefectures, Mount Zao is home to one of the most popular ski resorts in Japan. During the fall months, bring your camera for breathtaking views of the volcanic lake where numerous hiking trails will lead you to the Kumano Peak and the Okama Crater Lake. Strap on your snowshoes during winter to meet the infamous snow monsters. Travel with Confidence: Take a Hike | 13

KYOTO
in Autumn
Autumn is one of the best times to be in Kyoto, second only to hanami, when the cherry blossoms bloom. The fall season is an ideal travelling time for some because the summer heat has retreated and the maple trees turn crimson, setting Kyoto against a rich and beautiful backdrop. Unlike the cherry blossoms that only last for a week, the autumn foliage season in Kyoto lasts from Oct. 15–Dec. 15, with the peak of the season around Nov. 15. With two full months to see the leaves, there is plenty of time to plan a trip.
By Lindsey Franceschi
Shrines & Temples
View shrines, gardens and temples against a palette of bright yellow, red and orange trees. Kyoto has over 1,600 temples, but the Honen-in Temple stands out for its beauty and special touches like its moss-covered gate. For a quiet garden experience, the OkochiSanso Villa is said to rival the Imperial Gardens in beauty with the expertly cultivated grounds, a Shinto shrine and a viewpoint looking over the city of Kyoto.
Museums
Fushimi Inari-Taisha
(1,000 Torii Gates) This is an important Shinto shrine dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice. It is most well known for the thousands of vermillion Torii gates that cover the trails leading into the forest of Mount Inari. Reaching the summit of Mount Inari takes about two to three hours, but if you want a shorter walk, there is a beautiful outlook over the city of Kyoto 30 minutes from the start.
Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion)
Over 600 years old, this temple is steeped in history and beauty. It’s most distinct physical feature are the top two floors covered in gold leaf with a golden phoenix at the apex of the roof. Inside, each floor represents a different style of architecture and the pavilion overall is a study in the aristocratic culture of the fourteenth and fifteenth century.
Bamboo Forest in Arashiyama A world famous destination, the towering stalks of bamboo are stunning and make for amazing photos. After walking the gentle inclining path through the forest, enter the Okochi-Sanso Villa (mentioned above) which is right outside.
ITT Private Packages
Book a private trip to Kyoto or a number of other cities throughout Japan customized to your needs. Visit ITT in the Weasels' Den or call 226-3555 for more information. 16 | Kyoto in Autumn
There are many museums with preserved artifacts that tell the stories of Japan and give the world a window into the past. If you have an artistic focus, the Kyoto National Museum has a large collection of many art pieces to include paintings, scrolls, calligraphy, statues and pottery from both ancient and modern eras. For a museum experience the whole family will enjoy, the Kyoto Railway Museum covers the history of Japanese trains from the first steam train to today’s bullet trains with plenty of kid-friendly activities.
Live Shows
Two of the most memorable types of live shows you can witness in Kyoto are geisha dances and samurai presentations. These are lifestyles and disciplines that have a deep history in Japan going back hundreds of years.
Geisha
Witness the beautiful poise and style of geishas. Take in a dinner and a show at Kyoto Cuisine and Makio Evening at the Gion Hatanaka ryokan. The geisha mingle with guests during dinner and demonstrate their dancing. For a smaller presentation during the day, see Gion Odori, a small dance held daily Nov. 1–10 in a small venue by the geisha of the Gion Higashi district.
Samurai
The Samurai Kembu Theater offers live sword and fan performances and tells the history of the samurai and the dances between each demonstration. There are also sword lessons offered, where you’ll learn basic sword ettiquette, sword moves and dress up as a samurai afterward.
Transition GPS Monday–Friday Oct. 16–20 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. A&FRC FREE

Mrs. Ashley Pukay-Martin hails from the sunny state of Arizona. After graduating from Arizona State with a degree in Theatre, she entered into the Air Force. She spent most of her 6 years in the military providing nuclear deterrence as a Missileer at Malmstrom AFB, MT. During this time, she got her Master's in Human Resources, met and married her husband, and most importantly got her dogs, Oliver and Roxanne. Within the FSS, Ashley helps with the hiring of NAF employees. She loves to give jobs away, so come visit her in the Mokuteki if you are looking for employment! She could not have
gotten past the first week on the job without the help of her supervisor Wendi, and co-worker, Saki, who pick up her slack. Ashley loves traveling around Japan, practicing her shamisen, cuddling with her dogs, and being a part of the Misawa Community Theatre. 28 | FSS Spotlight | Auto Complex

Eligible purchase transactions do not include, and rewards are not earned for, the following transactions: cash advances, convenience checks, balance transfers, or fees of any kind, including finance charges, late fees, returned check fees, ATM cash advance fees, and annual fees, if any. Navy Federal cash equivalent transactions, such as the purchase, loading or re-loading of Navy Federal gift and prepaid cards (e.g., Navy Federal gift cards, Visa® Buxx Cards, GO Prepaid Cards), are also not eligible purchase transactions and do not earn rewards. 3Currently, rates range from 10.65% APR to 18% APR, are based on creditworthiness, and will vary with the market based on the U.S. Prime Rate. ATM cash advance fees: None if performed at a Navy Federal branch or ATM. Otherwise, $0.50 per domestic transaction or $1.00 per overseas transaction.
