Idols TUESDAY-FRIDAY 9:30AM @ MEDRUS (PENBRYN)

WHEN WE THINK OF IDOLS we tend to think of golden statues in ancient times or perhaps the sports and pop idols who are here today and gone tomorrow but the biblical picture is more challenging than that. According to the Ten Commandments an idol is anything that stops us putting God first. If that’s the case probably every one of us has dozens of idols, perhaps some we don’t even know about. In this series we take a look at some of the biggest idols that we face, examine why we find them so attractive and rediscover how Jesus is far more glorious than any idol can ever be.

The idol of self TUESDAY, LED BY ANDREW NORBURY

Have you ever held a camera at arm’s length to make sure you can be in your own photo – and then deleted it because you think it makes you look like you’ve got a double-chin? Have you ever spent time straightening your hair – or ruffling your hair – to give the ‘right’ impression? Being concerned about what others think is certainly not wrong – you’d be a fool if you didn’t. But everywhere in life we’re projecting an image – our Facebook profiles, our wardrobe, our mannerisms, our gadgets, our speech. The image might be cool, geeky, chic, confident, unconcerned or even spiritual. But do we define our image, or does our image define us? This seminar will help us escape what others would like us to become, and instead to become what we already are — made in His image, and re-made to be like Christ.

Mornings

The idols of now and then

page 2

WEDNESDAY, LED BY ART AZURDIA Some Christians worship the past. Hymns were better then, and so were Bible translations. Preachers and even society at large were both far superior then. To others, that’s nonsense: Issac Watts is no match for Stuart Townend, the KJV is a relic of a forgotten age, Martyn Lloyd-Jones can’t compare with Mark Driscoll and life without Facebook, microwaves and mobile phones doesn’t bear thinking about. In short, they worship the present. But if we venerate a tiny period of time – whether that be the 1700s or the decade in which we live – we effectively ignore most of what God has ever done. This seminar will remind us that God is not only the God of the past or the present, He’s the God of eternity.

The idol of comfort THURSDAY, LED BY LINDSAY BROWN

If God called you away from a comfortable home, a supportive family and a steady income, to a life of discomfort, frequent loneliness and relative poverty, would you go? It’s a tough question, isn’t it? If we did have that experience, most of us would probably run away with Jonah rather than say ‘I will go’ with Isaiah. This seminar will help us to realise that the only comfort God promises in His word is the comfort found in Him.

The idol of freedom

FRIDAY, LED BY MARK BARNES Our generation has more choice than any other generation in history. Almost all of us in this country have the freedom to choose how we shall work, where we will live, and whom we will marry – choices that we regard as human rights, but have not been available to most people in most of history. But this great freedom has become an idol – we hate teachers, parents and even friends telling us how we should live. But the great irony is that despite our apparent freedoms, many of us are not free at all – we’re not free to smash the idols of self, of now and then, of comfort, or of freedom. This seminar will help us grapple with the paradox that to be truly free means becoming a slave of the One who bought our freedom by saying ‘Not my will, but Yours be done’.

EXTRATIME IS A MIX OF PRAYER, INFORMAL GET-TOGETHERS, DISCUSSION, PRAISE AND PLENTY TO THINK ABOUT.

THE PROGRAMME IS FOR 15-25 YEAR OLDS, AND IS DESIGNED TO COMPLEMENT THE MAIN PREACHING MEETINGS. MAKE THOSE MEETINGS YOUR PRIORITY, THEN PICK AND CHOOSE FROM THE EXTRATIME MEETINGS TO MAKE YOUR WEEK AS CHALLENGING OR AS RESTFUL AS YOU NEED.

Seminars+Workshops Getting ready for uni

MONDAY 2:15PM, MEDRUS LED BY MIKE CHALMERS Hoping to head off to uni in a few weeks? Whether you’ve got a place sorted or expect to go through clearing, this brief session will help you prepare and get you linked up with other Christians. Come and be part of the adventure.

Home Alone?

MONDAY 2:45PM, MEDRUS LED BY PETE CAMPBELL Being a Christian is hard. Especially at home! Whether those in your home share your faith, despise your faith, or are somewhere in between, come and hear what God says about family and life at home.

Afternoons

Read your bible, pray every day...

MONDAY 4PM, MEDRUS LED BY GLYN ELLIS ...and you’ll grow, grow, grow… or so the children’s song tells us. If that’s true, why is reading the Bible so hard? And why is it so difficult to pray? Want to be close to God and learn more about Him but you don’t know where to start? Then come along and hear some practical tips to get more out of your quiet times.

Shiny, happy people?

WEDNESDAY 4:15PM, CAPEL-Y-MORFA LED BY SHEILA STEPHEN One famous chorus says that ‘the burden of my heart rolled away… and now I am happy all the day.’ Yet the former never completely brings about the latter – at least not this side of glory. But whilst all of us suffer from occasional sadness, others struggle with an oppressive and lasting depression. This seminar will be an honest and compassionate look at how we should respond to depression in our own lives and in the lives of those around us.

Only fools rush in

THURSDAY 4:15PM, CAPEL-Y-MORFA LED BY ANDY AND ALISON TAYLOR Love them or loathe them, ‘the relationships talk’ is an integral part of every Christian youth gathering. At extratime we promise a cheese-free, cringe-free, no-nonsense look at what the Bible has to say coupled with (see what we did there) practical help with putting the truth into practice.

Extratime Late EXTRATIME LATE IS AN HOUR-LONG EVENING MEETING TO HELP YOU REFLECT ON THE DAY AND CONTINUE TO WORSHIP GOD. IT’S MORE RELAXED THAN EITHER A PREACHING SERVICE OR A SEMINAR, BUT THE MESSAGE OF THE BIBLE, AND GOD HIMSELF, REMAIN CENTRAL.

Liar, Lunatic or Lord?

In Christ alone

Start the extratime late meetings by focusing on the Lord Jesus. Some say He was a good teacher, others a prophet, others even say He never existed! We’ll look at what the Bible says about who He was and the implications it has for our lives.

Join with us as we reflect on the work of Christ on the cross and the glory of His resurrection. We’ll remember what He’s done on our behalf as well as looking at the affect His transforming power has on our lives.

The great gospel

Any questions?

We will be introducing the main conference speaker, Conrad Mbewe, and finding out about his theme for the week, ‘The Great Gospel of our Glorious God’. We’ll also find out how he became known as the ‘African Spurgeon’ and how to correctly pronounce his surname.

Put your questions to our esteemed panel – Conrad Mbewe, Art Azurdia III and Sheila Stephen. Expect practical and biblical answers on a range of topics. Please put your questions in the Question Box or give it to a member of the extratime team by 5pm on Thursday.

Go into the world…

Return of the King

…but come to this meeting first! Many tend to miss this meeting but tonight there’ll be no guilttrips or hard-sells, just simply an opportunity to hear about God’s work in His world and pray for His people. Our God is a missionary – come and join in.

Finish off the week with an evening of prayer and praise where we look to the promise that our Saviour will one day return for us all. We have a great hope and it’s something to thrill us before we leave Aber and something to remember as we return home.

speakers

ART ARZURDIA III is Senior Minister of Word and Worship at Trinity Church and Associate Professor of Pastoral Theology at Western Seminary in Portland, Oregon. Art was chosen for his seminar topic because although he descends from a long line of Arturo’s (well, two) he named his son Jonathan!

GLYN ELLIS is a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Cardiff, though was brought up in mid-Wales. He is deputy head in a busy primary school. He is married to Fflur and they have three children. Glyn and Fflur lead the Time Out meetings for those too old for extratime!

MARK BARNES is pastor of Bethel Evangelical Church in Swansea. He also works part-time for the EMW and is a visiting lecturer at WEST. Like more than half of the extratime committee, he’s a Wrexham fan.

CONRAD MBEWE is our main conference speaker and is known as the ‘African Spurgeon’. A regular blogger, his opening sentence on his blog reads: ‘Water, water, water, everywhere. What else do you expect? I am a Baptist, and I live in the land of the mighty Victoria Falls!’

LINDSAY BROWN is internationally respected, used by God in every ‘corner’ of the globe and a proud Welshman. Rumour is he’s a Spurs fan too (so Mike likes him a lot!). Reading his book ‘Shining Like Stars’ should be compulsory for all Christians and you can buy it this week for just £1! MIKE CHALMERS will be enjoying his last week as a UCCF staff worker during the conference. He enjoys talking especially about how Jesus is Lord of everything, even sleeping, eating and playing. Sadly he still doesn’t have a page on Wikipedia – but he keeps checking (in vain!) every few weeks. PETE CAMPBELL became a Christian at Swansea uni – while on exec(!). He quickly began to love Jesus and has a great passion for others to do the same. As well as being a husband and a dad, he plays the guitar (ask him to sing you the sheep song) and he’s learning Welsh. Da iawn!

ANDREW NORBURY is co-pastor in Peniel Evangelical Church in Maesteg, South Wales. He’s been doing that since January but has been working with the church since 2007. He supports Everton Football Club and is married to Lisa. SHEILA STEPHEN is a professional counsellor and lectures part-time at WEST. She enjoys reading good Christian books and bodyboarding (not at the same time) and is looking forward to the arrival of her first grandchild in the autumn. ANDY AND ALISON TAYLOR met at church when in London. Andy is studying at WEST and Alison is the student worker in Highfields Church, Cardiff. They have been married for two and a half years so are at that happy point when they still remember being single and how long they’ve been married.
