To Those Who Need to Organize and Observe Before they Create.
THE CONCEPT VISUAL OBSERVER
Organizing my thoughts before I design.
My design process always begins with me organizing my thoughts, ideas, and observations. Even the smallest project has to be thoroughly thought out. I will read the project assignment or task from start to finish and write down every important element and what the final piece will be comprised of. The pieces in this portfolio all begin with what I have observed when I thought of the project I was designing. Those observations helped me decide on a direction and concept for each project.

OBJECTIVE
Create a hypothetical film festival to celebrate the films of John Carpenter. Coordinate a complex set of materials that must function together as a whole as well as separately. The idea is to marry multiple messages with divergent formats—all with a unified aesthetic.

John Carpenter films have a common theme that the monster is around us and the victim may not expect they are the prey. They just want to live an ordinary life.

APPROACH
The villains in the films of John Carpenter are people who you would least expect—cars, fog, etc. These “monsters” are your common, everyday things and the “prey” of these monsters do not expect anything. They hope to go about their everyday life. My approach was to focus on the villains in the films of John Carpenter and the idea he had that the monster is in and around all of us.

APPROACH
There are Black social justice movements and organizations that have a negative reputation and are misunderstood by many individuals.
My approach was to bring awareness and understanding to Black social justice movements, such as Black Lives Matter and Antifa by comparing them to each other and to movements from previous decades, the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Panther Party. I combined stereotypical images with positive messages, along with a color palette and typeface that can be seen as friendly.

The East Coast does things a little different in terms of their food and grilling. The grill of choice on the East Coast is charcoal and their food is seasoned differently.
Being from the East, I have noticed the difference in the food and the way it is prepared. Growing up, we had BBQs when the weather was hot, too hot to use the oven. We season our food differently. The food on the East Coast is more “in your face.” The cookbook was made to show how East Coast grilling is more spontaneous and does not follow the fancy and traditional grilling on the West Coast.

The song I chose was Ecstasy by Avant. It was released in the early 2000s but is grouped together with the 90s “Baby Making Music.” The song is about being intimate with your partner. Instead of using reds and pinks to symbolize romance, I decided to be less cliché and use orange to relate to the passion Avant expresses in his song.

Levi Strauss & Co. have been seeing occasional rise and fall with the company over the years. However, over the last few years, Levi Strauss & Co has seen a growth in its profit margin.
The color of denim, and the color of the stitching used in most of their jeans, inspired me to stick with these colors for consumers and other viewers to understand which company is being discussed. I also decided to make the annual report easier to understand for anyone who reads it.

Diversity does exist in the design industry; however, people of color are not in the forefront. This topic has been talked about for more than 30 years. A perfect solution has not been found for the problem.

OBJECTIVE
How can I increase the number of young African American women in the design industry? There are many problems as to why the design industry is a predominately white male industry. These problems must be found and possible solutions need to be developed to adequately solve these problems and address the issue.

Young African American women do not understand what graphic design is, so they are not interested in pursuing a career in the industry. The lack of knowledge about design can be broken down into many causes, but it starts with exposure.

CONCEPT
APPROACH
There are many reasons why the number of women of color in the design industry is low. I chose to focus on three main reasons or problems—lack of knowledge, lack of accessibility and exposure, and lack of design programs. Instead of having an older target audience, I decided to choose young African American women who are ending their high school careers and are just starting college. These are formative years.

APPRECIATION
I would like to thank all of my instructors at Academy of Art University who gave me constructive feedback and helped me grow as a designer. I am grateful for my friends who stood by my side through all those long nights. You put up with my all the tears, anxiety attacks, and nights when I wanted to quit and go back home. You have no idea what you all being there meant for me, even those of you who are thousands of miles away. Those random texts that made me smile were everything. Mom, I know you are proud of me. To my brothers, Anthony and Jessie, I made it. You two can be anything and go anywhere you want.
