I’m going to take you on a journey of how I chose my director and how my final deliverables turned out‌
Process Journal
At the beginning I had to pick three separate directors and watch at least one movie that has helped define the director in a way. I had to look out for things like visual language. Along with each of the three directors, I also had to explain why I chose the director and movie, include a brief biography, list career highlights and assemble imagery. The imagery was to be taken from the movie itself as well as from my own research.
Keep going to see who my top three chosen directors were.

What Makes Him a Good Director
John Carpenter uses minimalist cinematography and lighting. Tries to make empty spaces look full, and full spaces look empty. Shoots all of his movies in Panavision (2.35:1 ratio with anamorphic lenses). The exceptions are Dark Star (1974) and all of his TV work. His films often feature important visuals shown from a video screen (The end-of-the-world transmission from the future in Prince of Darkness (1987), the Norwegian recordings of the expedition to uncover the aliens in The Thing (1982), various TV sets and the general anti-TV motif in They Live (1988), etc.). Many of Carpenter’s films include what he calls a “cheap scare”, where something comes into view very fast and leaves just as quickly, intensified by musical cues. Carpenter makes open compositions that allow the villain/ monster (or sometimes just an object) to pop into frame from the background, the immediate foreground or from either side of the frame. It has since become a horror cliché after using “cheap scares” so effectively in Halloween (1978).
Chosen Film
Halloween is a 1978 American slasher film directed and scored by John Carpenter, co-written with producer Debra Hill, and starring Donald Pleasence and Jamie Lee Curtis in her film debut. The film tells the story of serial killer Michael Myers as he stalks and kills teenage babysitters on Halloween night, fifteen years after he murdered his teenage sister, Judith Myers. After escaping a sanitarium, he returns home to the sleepy town of Haddonfield, Illinois while being pursued by his psychiatrist Samuel Loomis. Michael stalks high school student Laurie Strode and her friends as they babysit and carries out a horrific massacre. Dr. Loomis desperately seeks to find his patient to stop his rampage, before the carnage intensifies. Shot in Southern California, Halloween was released on October 25, 1978 by Compass International Pictures, became one of the most profitable independent films. Primarily praised for Carpenter’s direction and score, many credit the film as the first in a long line of slasher films inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960). Halloween spawned a film franchise comprising seven films which helped construct an extensive backstory for its antagonist Michael Myers, sometimes narratively diverging entirely from previous installments. A remake was released in 2007, which itself was followed by a sequel in 2009. An eleventh installment, which serves as a direct sequel to the original film that retcons all previous sequels, was released in 2018. Additionally, a novelization, video game and comic book series have been based on the film. In 2006, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

He returns to his quiet hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois, where he looks for his next victims.

Nancy Meyers Biography
Director, writer, producer
Nancy Jane Meyers, born on December 8, 1949 in Pennsylvania, USA, is an American film director, producer and screenwriter. She is the writer, producer and director of several big-screen successes, including The Parent Trap, What Women Want, Something’s Gotta Give, The Holiday, It’s Complicated and The Intern. Inspired by the popular TV show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Meyers decided she wanted to write. She eventually got work as a story editor where she read scripts, wrote coverage, and worked with screenwriters on projects that the producers were developing. One of the companies she worked at was producer Ray Stark’s company, Rastar. She worked her way up from there to writing her own scripts. Two years after coming to Los Angeles, Meyers was able to quit her job to focus on a career in screenwriting and took film-making classes where she connected with directors such as Martin Scorsese. To support herself, she started a small cheesecake business after seeing the reactions to a cake she made for a dinner party. She was eventually hired as a story editor by film producer Ray Stark, who later fired her after she objected to the fact that two writers were each working on the same script without the other knowing.

She was originally a development executive. She met her ex-husband, Charles Shyer, when she was helping develop a script he had written. They eventually began writing and producing together. Since the success of What Women Want (2000) and Something’s Gotta Give (2003), she is very sought after as a writer and director. She is particularly in demand because she writes great parts in hit movies for adults.
Chosen Film
The Parent Trap is a 1998 American romantic comedy-drama film co-written and directed by Nancy Meyers, and produced and co-written by Charles Shyer. It is a remake of the 1961 film of the same name and an adaptation of Erich Kästner’s German novel Lottie and Lisa (Das doppelte Lottchen). Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson star as a divorced couple who separated shortly after their identical twin daughters’ birth; Lindsay Lohan stars (in her film debut) as both twins, Hallie Parker and Annie James, who are fortuitously reunited at summer camp after being separated at birth. David Swift wrote the screenplay for the original 1961 film based on Lottie and Lisa. The story is comparable to that of the 1936 Deanna Durbin film Three Smart Girls. Swift is credited along with Meyers and Shyer as co-writers of the 1998 version. In its opening weekend, the film grossed $11,148,497 in 2,247 theaters in the United States and Canada, ranking #2 at the box office, behind Saving Private Ryan. By the end of its run, The Parent Trap grossed $66,308,518 domestically and $25,800,000 internationally, totaling $92,108,518 worldwide. The film was released in the United Kingdom on December 11, 1998, and opened on #3, behind Rush Hour and The Mask of Zorro.
The Parent Trap (1998) Directed By John Carpenter
In this update of a 1961 film, twins Annie and Hallie (Lindsay Lohan) are strangers until happenstance unites them. The preteen girls’ divorced parents, Nick (Dennis Quaid) and Elizabeth (Natasha Richardson), are living on opposite sides of the Atlantic, each with one child. After meeting at camp, American Hallie and British-raised Annie engineer an identity swap, giving both the chance to spend time with the parent they’ve missed. If the scheme works, it might just make the family whole again.

Felix Gary Gray (born July 17, 1969) is an American filmmaker, music video director, and actor. Gray directed Friday, Set It Off, The Negotiator, and Straight Outta Compton, as well as the remake of The Italian Job. Gray was born in New York. He began his career in 1989 when he appeared uncredited in the satire comedy film Major League. Three years later, he directed the music video for Ice Cube’s “It Was a Good Day.” The video is a literal adaptation of the lyrics. He would go on to direct subsequent videos for Ice Cube, as well as artists such as Cypress Hill, Outkast, Dr. Dre, and Queen Latifah. At 24, Gray directed his first film, the urban comedy Friday with rapper-producer Ice Cube and Chris Tucker. Next he directed the film, Set It Off, with Jada Pinkett and Queen Latifah. He then went on to direct The Negotiator. The film starred Academy Award winner Kevin Spacey and Oscar nominee Samuel L. Jackson, and earned Gray both Best Film and Best Director awards at the 1998 Acapulco Film Festival. was named one of the “50 Best and Brightest African Americans Under 40” by Black Enterprise magazine. He was honored by the African American Film Critics Association with their 2004 Special Achievement Award and was recognized by the Artist Empowerment Coalition with the Artist Empowerment Award that same year. He also received the Pioneer Director award from the Pan-African Film and Arts Festival in 2010.
What Makes Him a Good Director
He did not have a typical filmmaker background like many directors have. He didn’t grow up with a super eight camera or a video camera or start cutting movies when he was four or five. He actually didn’t really start to get into the research of film until he was much older. F. Gary Gray decided he wanted to direct a lot earlier than he started to do the research, which is really strange, but it is the case.
Chosen Film
Friday is a 1995 American stoner comedy film directed by F. Gary Gray in his directorial debut. It stars Ice Cube, who co-wrote the film with DJ Pooh, and Chris Tucker in his debut role. The film details roughly 16 hours in the lives of unemployed Craig Jones (Cube) and Smokey (Tucker), who must pay a drug dealer $200 by 10:00 p.m. Craig Jones, a young man living in South Central Los Angeles, has just lost his job after being framed for stealing on his day off. Not having any plans, he hangs out on his front porch with his best friend, Smokey, a snappy, mischievous drug dealer who sells weed for Big Worm, the psychopathic neighborhood supplier. Throughout the day, Craig and Smokey observe the goings-on in their neighborhood. Prior to Friday’s release, movies such as Boyz n the Hood (also starring Ice Cube) and Colors portrayed life in the hood as violent and menacing. Ice Cube felt that these films did not portray the full picture of living in the hood, missing a more lighthearted element, with Cube later saying, “we had fun in the hood. We used to trip off the neighborhood.” Therefore, Cube and DJ Pooh decided to create a film that would portray that environment. The script was only the third Cube had ever written; the previous two were undeveloped. With the film, Ice Cube intended to make a “hood classic”, one that could be “[watched] over and over and over again”. According to Ice Cube, a majority of the film is autobiographical, with much of it being based on events that occurred in his neighborhood growing up. Smokey was based on DJ Pooh’s stint as a drug dealer, while Craig being fired on his day off was based on Ice Cube’s cousin, who was working as a driver for United Parcel Service at the time.
Friday (1995)
Directed By F. Gary Gray
It’s Friday and Craig Jones (Ice Cube) has just gotten fired for stealing cardboard boxes. To make matters worse, rent is due, he hates his overbearing girlfriend, Joi (Paula Jai Parker), and his best friend, Smokey (Chris Tucker), owes the local drug dealer money— and that’s all before lunch. As the hours drag on, Jones and Smokey experience the gamut of urban life, complete with crackheads, shoot-outs and overly sexual pastors, concentrated into one single, unbelievable Friday.

The next thing on the agenda was to watch some more movies by my director and find a possible connection between at least five of them. When watching the movies, note taking is a must. It is a good way to find out similarities in movies and you will also have something to look back on in the future. With the films that I watched, I also made a film moodboard. It contai stills from the movie, a brief synopsis and a little doodle that explains how characters in the movie end. I also created a design brief and initial content buckets—photo style, type style, graphic style. There were other buckets as well, they came up a little later—color and materials.

Poster I made the soundtrack in a cassette tape format. It works well because most of John Carpenter movies take place between the 60s–80s. Cassette tapes were popular back then. They were used to give your crush to when you made them a mix and they were used in some cars.

DVD Packaging The DVD packaging is made so you can slide it out to look at the movies and read the booklet. The DVDs are also designed to slide out. They contain images that are made to represent the villain in each movie—Halloween is the mask, The Thing is the blood that they have to test, Christine is the car itself. Instead of making seven individual booklets, I felt making one booklet would be a better choice.

Schedule and Tickets The schedule and tickets are small enough for people to put in their pockets. There is an envelop on the last page of the schedule which contains the tickets. You can remove the envelop if you want to. The tickets are front and back and they contain images that come directly from the movies itself.
