Mission snowmobiler dies in avalanche Chilliwack search and rescue volunteers joined a search last Tuesday for a Mission snowmobiler killed in an avalanche near Tulameen, northeast of Hope. The man was later identified as 43-year-old Mike Buckles. Police said the avalanche happened around noon northwest of Tulameen as 12 sledders were traveling along a trail area. “The avalanche came down between the group, sweeping one man down the mountainside,” RCMP

Cpl. Dan Moskaluk said in a news release. He said all group members were properly equipped with rescue recovery gear, and all were wearing GPS locator beacons. There were no other injuries. Moskaluk said one from the group headed to the Coquihalla toll booth area where there was cellphone coverage to call for help, while the others began searching for the buried man. Buckles was located by his GPS locator, but CPR efforts failed to revive him. He had been buried in the

snow for about 15 minutes. Chilliwack and Hope search and rescue teams were mustered at the toll booth location, but it was deemed unsafe to recover the body immediately because of snow conditions. Moskaluk said RCMP victim assistance workers are supporting the family. “The deceased was with his father, along with another extended family member amongst the group, who were all from the Lower Mainland area of B.C.,” he said.

Making the move to Madagascar BY JASON ROESSLE Mission Record

R

Karina and Rob Barber sit with their three children, Faith, Wesley and Joyanne. The couple have secured a solid portion of the monthly funding needed for their trip and are on pace to cover the $70,000 needed to pay for the initial plane tickets, shipping costs and French language school. If you would like to support the Barbers, visit http://mafbarbers.blogspot. com/p/donate.html, e-mail them at barbers.rk@gmail.com, or call MAF Canada at 1-877-3519344. JASON ROESSLE PHOTO

aising a family, paying the mortgage and finding time for fun are regular challenges for most Mission families. Now imagine trying to do that in Madagascar. Rob and Karina Barber will be moving their three-child-strong family across the world to Antananarivo for overseas missions work with Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) and are in the process of learning French and readying their affairs before embarking on the journey. MAF provides aviation, communication and logistics to meet the physical and spiritual needs of some of the most isolated and remote villages and communities, said Karina, 27. For many of these tucked away locales, MAF is one of the only links to the outside world and sometimes the sole group bringing in food, medical supplies and education. Rob, 29, is an aircraft maintenance engineer and will be keeping MAF’s planes running, as well as overseeing the hangar, staff housing and vehicle shops. Karina will be working in the community, home schooling their children and running the household. It was a question from Karina that started this ball of change in motion. “She asked me where I saw myself in 10 years,” Rob related. “And I didn’t know. Materialism wasn’t where our focus was and I started

looking at other careers.” He contemplated the military but eventually found out about MAF while researching a potential move to Australia. “I had never thought of missions work, but God brought on a heart change,” said Rob. “We’re pretty excited to raise our kids in a different culture.” The family applied in March 2009 and nearly a year later, May 2010, they were accepted. MAF puts candidates through a lengthy raft of evaluations because it’s looked upon as though “you’re going into [missions work] like a career,” explained Karina. “It’s a very technically demanding field and [MAF] wants to ensure you’ll stick around,” added Rob. The organization makes applicants responsible for raising, or getting the commitment for, all the funding they will require. For the Barbers, that equates to $6,000 a month and their first of two planned terms will be 3.5 years, plus a six-month assignment back in Canada. As of this week, the family has arranged 60 per cent. Any one donating to the family sends the money to MAF, a registered charity, which then flow to the Barbers. The organization also acknowledges the difficulty in amassing that much support, so Rob is paid a salary until the Barbers depart so that he can make fundraising a full-time effort. The couple have been speaking at churches, to service groups and wherever else they feel their mission might resonate.

Property values rise for all types in Mission Mission property values rose across the board in 2010 with the biggest average gains coming in single family homes. Local property owners can expect their 2011 assessment notices in the mail in the next few days. Assessments are the estimate of a property’s market value as of July 1, 2010. This common valuation date ensures there is an equitable property assessment base for property taxation. Real estate agents determine a

property’s value, while local governments and other taxation authorities are responsible for property taxation. “Most homes in the Fraser Valley are worth more on this year’s assessment roll than they were on the 2010 assessment role,” said Fraser Valley interim regional assessor Michael Lomax. “Most homeowners in the Fraser Valley will see modest increases in the five to 10 per cent range.”

Changes in property assessments reflect movement in the local market and can vary greatly from site to site. Overall, the Fraser Valley’s assessment roll increased to $78 billion from $73 billion since last year. A total of $1.3 billion of this growth reflects new value added by subdivisions, rezoning and new construction. “Property owners who feel that their property assessment does not reflect market value as of July 1,

2010 or see incorrect information on their notice should contact the BC Assessment office,” said Lomax. A notice of complaint (appeal) can be submitted by Jan. 31 if speaking with an assessment appraiser does not satisfy the property owner. The Fraser Valley office is located at 240-31935 South Fraser Way, Abbotsford. The office is open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. For more information visit www. bcassessment.ca.

B.C. Liberal hopefuls reach out BY TOM FLETCHER Black Press

B.C. Liberal leadership hopefuls rolled out their latest public accountability promises Tuesday as the race for party support resumed after a holiday break. Shuswap MLA George Abbott called for a referendum on the future of B.C.’s carbon tax, to be held in late June along with a province-wide vote on the harmonized sales tax. Abbott said he supports the tax on fossil fuels, but questions whether it should continue to increase after 2012 when no other jurisdiction in North America has followed suit. Abbotsford West MLA Mike de Jong promised a slimmed-down B.C. government in recognition of this year’s $1.7 billion budget deficit. Cabinet would be reduced from 24 ministers to fewer than 20, and the

premier’s office budget would be cut by 10 per cent. Former cabinet minister Christy Clark said she would increase accountability as premier by holding a dozen town hall meetings a year around the province. Cabinet ministers and legislative committees

would be given a greater role in decision-making, and the legislature would be “more than a rubber stamp” for cabinet decisions, Clark vowed. Surrey-Cloverdale MLA Kevin Falcon made headlines on the weekend with a call for merit-based pay for public school teachers. That

idea was rejected by B.C. Teachers’ Federation president Susan Lambert, who said merit pay would have to be based on student test scores, which are too narrow a measurement of achievement. Vancouver-Langara MLA Moira Stilwell started her campaign week in the Kootenays, pledging $10 million towards the establishment of a mountain search and rescue training institute based in Revelstoke. The race to replace Premier Gordon Campbell got a sixth candidate Tuesday, as Parksville Mayor Ed Mayne resigned from his municipal role to run. He also stressed accountability and consultation with the public. “I believe the government and the Liberal Party are broken,” Mayne said Monday. “The government has stopped listening to the people.”

Operation Red Nose tallies up 842 rides Record numbers of clients, volunteers and donations BY NEIL CORBETT Black Press

Operation Red Nose had a particularly merry holiday season in Abbotsford/Mission, with more clients safely delivered home, more volunteer drivers, and more donations to the cause. In 2009, the volunteer service, which takes drivers who have been drinking and their vehicles home safely, offered 569 rides. This year was the best ever, with 842 rides. Correspondingly, donations rose from $9,600 last year to more than $15,000 in the just completed campaign. The increases were made possible by a team of volunteers that was also up by about 50 per cent this year. “There were 121 brand new volunteers to the program, which we thought was remarkable,” said Linda Palm, the manager of Operation Red Nose in Abbotsford/Mission. She is also the general manager of Pacific Sport, the beneficiary of Red

Nose, and a support to elite-level athletes in the Fraser Valley. Palm credited media support with the boost in volunteers. “People heard that we needed volunteers, and gave up their time to support us,” she said. Early in December it became apparent that the new drinking and driving penalties, which the provincial government calls the toughest the country, were creating more demand for Red Nose, and more drivers were needed. For New Years Eve there were 84 volunteers, divided into 25 teams of drivers. They offered 153 rides, which was the busiest night ever for Operation Red Nose in Abbotsford/ Mission. • The expanded Operation Red Nose outgrew the community policing office as a base of operations, and Palm is appealing to the business community for a donation of greater space and more phones for next year. • Across B.C., 7,660 rides were provided by 4,229 volunteers in the 12 communities that offer Operation Red Nose. • Across Canada, in the eight provinces that have Red Nose programs, there were 81,022 rides, and 55,381 volunteers donated their time. More than $1.3 million was donated.

O’Neal and Syncrohearts get second chance on TV show

Expect to see your household’s monthly electricity bill climb $7 in each of the next three years. BC Hydro is now projecting a series of rate increases that will raise a typical monthly residential bill by $21 – a nearly 30 per cent jump from $71 to $92 – by 2013. The Crown corporation needs to raise $6 billion to upgrade aging power stations, transmission lines and the Vancouver city centre transmission system. “To pay for these much-needed projects, we need to increase rates, while still looking at every way to keep them among the lowest in North America,” BC Hydro president and CEO Dave Cobb. The planned hikes mean a typical

Local boardgame entrepreneur Bob O’Neal is getting a another chance to slay the Dragons. The Mission man and creator of Syncrohearts will be making his second appearance on the popular CBC television show, Dragons Den, Jan. 12 at 8 p.m. O’Neal first appeared on the show in 2007 and the hosts didn’t believe there was a demand for the product and refused to sign on.

“The viewers knew better,” he said. “We won the popular vote for our episode and we have sold over 5,000 copies with online orders from as far away as Iran and Australia.” O’Neal says that in today’s busy society, relationships are under a lot of stress. He originally produced the game — inspired by his late parents’ relationship — to help enhance

his own marriage. Syncrohearts helps couples communicate more effectively and increases romance, he said. The longtime District of Mission forestry worker also feels the episode airing date is “syncronistic” as Jan. 12 was his father’s birthday. “I feel he would be proud of [alter ego] Dr. Love,” O’Neal said.

Black Press

home will pay about $250 more in 2013 than it did last year. B.C. Public Interest Advocacy Centre executive director Jim Quail said the rate increases are likely to continue indefinitely, with electricity bills doubling about every eight years. “There’s no end in sight,” he said. “A number of their projections are probably optimistic. We think if anything it’s conservative.” The much higher cost of modern power infrastructure compared to the dams built in the 1960s is the main reason. But Quail also blames policy decisions like buying higher priced “clean” electricity from run-of-river power plants and the move to install smart meters in every home, which he predicts will be a billion-dollar boondoggle rather than an investment paying off in conservation.

THE MISSION RECORD – THURSDAY, JANUARY 6, 2011

OPINION

Published and printed by Black Press Ltd. at Mission at 33047 First Ave., V2V 1G2

Get handle on debt Christmas shopping is over, but it’s never a bad time to talk about household debt. In buying homes or cars simply because interest rates are relatively low right now, the debt-amassing public is rolling the dice that rate hikes either won’t come soon or won’t affect them. Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney said interest rate changes, when they come — and they will, eventually — can be brutal and far-reaching. “Cheap money is not a long-term growth strategy,” he said earlier this month. His words hinted that Canada, like other countries, could be heading down the same road that set off this most recent global financial crisis. As Carney says, we’re not out of the woods yet, folks. That means we consumers — especially those paying down mortgages — need to combine fiscal restraint with common sense. Setting aside money to cover off the initial pain of a rate hike isn’t a bad plan. If you feel a binding urge to buy something, make sure you can pay cash or at least cover most of it. Even a half-point jump in the Bank of Canada rate can have dramatic effects on the amount you pay out. And let’s not forget that Canada’s annual inflation rate was higher in 2010 than it’s been in two years, at 2.4 per cent. Even if interest rates go up, the prices of things like gas and groceries likely won’t come down. While our levels of debt are growing, the picture isn’t all bleak. Investment firm BMO Nesbitt Burns says our net worth is growing at a faster rate than our debt — people are saving more and investments are growing again. Nonetheless, our personal debt load is a barometer of our financial health. Getting it under control before the big one hits could be a good plan for 2011. —Goldstream Gazette

Outgoing premier’s legacy is mostly a positive story P

remier Gordon Campbell has a standard joke when asked about fixed election dates. You mean set election dates, he says with a smile. “If we had fixed elections, there would be no problem.” As Campbell prepares to leave office after 17 years as B.C. Liberal leader and nearly a decade as premier, Canada’s first legislated schedule for elections is one of the significant achievements that I hope will endure. Another one is the carbon tax. Leadership hopeful Kevin Falcon has already suggested the carbon tax on fossil fuels be frozen when the currently legislated schedule of increases runs out in 2012. Currently at 4.45 cents on a litre of gasoline, it goes to 5.56 cents next July and 6.67 cents a year later. The tax applies to all carbon-emitting fuels, including coal, shredded tires and even

peat moss. Offset by income tax cuts, it is designed as a growing incentive to find low-carbon energy alternatives. It also promotes walkable communities and fitness, which our culture desperately needs. Then there are the income tax cuts. Personal income taxes were cut 25 per cent on Campbell’s first day in office, and B.C.’s small business income tax is on its way to zero. To Campbell’s critics predicted the gutting of government programs as a result of these cuts, and they have been proven wrong. Government revenues and spending have continued to grow every year. When the Fraser Institute ranked Campbell first in its recent study of the fiscal

performance of Canada’s premiers, it noted his government held average annual growth of program spending to 4.4 per cent. Even so, the average growth of the B.C. economy was only 4.1 per cent during those years, and as a result government grew from 19.4 per cent of gross domestic product to 21.1 per cent during his term. (Ontario’s Dalton McGuinty finished last, his 7.7 per cent average annual m spending increase being three times the rate of provincial economic growth.) Averaged over the same period, Campbell achieved annual surpluses and reduced debt. Even his opponents credit Campbell with bringing adult supervision to federal-

provincial relations, after Glen Clark’s swashbuckling over U.S. submarines using the Nanoose Bay test range. Contrast that with the Pacific Gateway port and road development, trade agreements with Alberta and Saskatchewan, and bridgebuilding with both Liberal and Conservative federal governments that will probably save his party. Aside from the harmonized sales tax, Campbell’s most controversial recent move is the establishment of the natural resource operations ministry. If you’ve heard about this at all, it’s likely been inaccurate claims about forest research being abandoned and the like. In fact, this is the kind of regulatory efficiency that a globalized economy demands, and that bureaucracies resist. Natural resource

YOUR VIEWS Donations keep society’s doors open Editor, The Record: I would like to thank the residents of Mission and Abbotsford (and even some from further afield) for their concern for the plight of the Fraser Valley Humane Society and all the adorable cats and kittens in our care. Everyone’s outpouring of generosity and support is truly heartwarming. As many of you know, we have had an extremely challenging year and were very close to closing our doors in December, leaving almost 40 cats and kittens looking once again for somewhere where they would be safe, warm, fed well and loved. The overwhelming encouragement from the community has given us hope and the ability to look forward and prepare for an active and calmer 2011. Thanks to all the generous donations we are able to carry on for now but, like other non-profit organizations, we rely heavily on the financial support of the community year round. A huge thank you to all the animal lovers who have made it possible for us to continue caring for the never-ending number of abandoned, stray and unwanted cats in Mission. We hope the community will continue to show its support, and please don’t forget us in 2011. We can not do it alone! Celia Durst Executive Director Fraser Valley Humane Society

Editor, The Record: ValleyMax Transit (Abbotsford and Mission) plans to increase overall service levels by 10 per cent in the new year. As a potential resident of Mission, I want to commend our council for this choice, as well as demonstrate why I think this is good policy. I am currently a geography student at the University of the Fraser Valley, with all of my courses on the Abbotsford campus. Recently, I’ve found a place where I’d love to live — nice and central, within walking distance of lots of amenities, and on or near the #33 and #34 routes, as well as the #40 in the evening. I’ve always desired to avoid increasing the levels of air pollution and particulates in our sensitive eastern Fraser Valley air. So far, I’ve mostly been able to do that, having used ValleyMax transit and cycling for the most

small sacrifice to wait for a few minutes at a bus stop in order to (gasp) share a vehicle with people you might not know. At UFV, we have a universal transit pass approved by almost two-thirds of students in a referendum. Every student pays for it when they pay tuition. This brings the cost down by more than half, bringing the cost of transportation down to the equivalent of two to four hours of work for an entire month, compared to a car at what I would estimate to roughly equate to at least 50 hours of work each month. So, Fraser Valleyites, let’s support our public programs, buy into the transit system, save ourselves some gas money, get to know your neighbours, and stop being slaves to the automobile. We’re better than that. Daniel van der Kroon Mission/Abbotsford

ministries already operate in Ontario, Nova Scotia, Alberta, Manitoba and Ottawa, all in conjunction with separate environment ministries. Similar efforts are in place in California and Oregon. The related legacies of privatization and energy development are also controversial. Setting aside the criminal acts of a couple of ministerial aides, does anyone still believe that any province should own and operate a railway? That it should serve as a costly social program for ranchers, or run empty passenger cars for the sake of nostalgia? Power development, like health care, is too big to be done by the state alone. Both these systems need to get bigger, and the costs are staggering. Finally, there is the HST. It remains to be seen if this policy will survive as a further step in B.C.’s political maturity. part of my university stay. I have a friend here in Mission who talks of moving due to the poor air quality. I’m also firmly committed to the efficient use of resources, and when it comes to transportation, how can it be efficient for everyone to drive everywhere, all of the time as we do in the eastern Fraser Valley? We run buses around the entire city with plenty of seats to spare, that with a small sacrifice in time that would also be a gift to our pocketbooks, we could fill up to do our shopping, visiting, and commuting. It doesn’t mean using them all of time — sometimes it’s just totally impractical. I have a car that I insure when I expect to need it. But it means taking the trouble to pick up a monthly pass and knowing the bus schedule so that when it’s going near where you need to go, you can make the

Editor, The Record: Re: Children may leave district: chief, Dec. 9 edition. Leq’a:mel Chief Alice Thompson says that a merger will cause strife for the children. She also says moving children to Dewdney is odd because it is an older school. As a result, she says she may ask her members to consider moving further east to Seabird Island or Chehalis. Both of her arguments seem to have sizable holes. First, if a move from one school to another will cause strife then moving to a school further east would not seem to be the right answer. It might even cause more strife. The children at issue and their parents will be negatively affected by a longer commute. Time is very valuable. A move may cut up to an hour from their already short day. It could cut more. It’s time

they could spend studying. I don’t know many people who like to read on a bus. Parents will also have to wait to take their children to appointments and programs. There will be opportunities they miss out on altogether. I grew up within walking distance of my elementary school. I was lucky. My friends and I spent a lot of time after school playing street hockey. It’s hard to play something like that when it’s dark outside. If a student misses the bus, a parent will have to drive their son or daughter further too. And meal times will be pushed back. It’s just an awful proposition to send kids further. Also, any friendships they’ve made with children who go on to Dewdney will also be affected. They will make new friends at either Dewdney or Seabird Island

to be sure. But, it would seem to me it would be easier coming to a school with a wider network of other students they know and with which they have grown comfortable. I don’t know any of the children personally but I can imagine what it’s like to be the new kid. The article states the Dewdney school is being upgraded so, the actual building would seem to be a non-factor. I am not certain but perhaps Dewdney is the school that is better able to accommodate a few more students. The question seems to be what are Chief Thompson’s motives for suggesting a move up the Fraser? This should be an education issue. But, it seems there are other factors at work that she doesn’t want to mention. David Green Mission

at the midnight hour. Part 3 of the bylaw reads “The throwing, propelling, ejecting, lighting, firing, exploding, settling off, discharging, or possession of fire crackers or other fireworks of every nature or kind is hereby prohibited in the District of Mission.” Oh wait, this bylaw is now presented in a manner that fireworks are OK as long as you call yourself an organization, apply for a permit, and pay the fee. This is what is generally stated in Part 4. Sorry folks, this is just another money grab by the district to fill its coffers. How do I know you ask? Because when you print this bylaw from the District’s website, along comes an application for a special permit for exploding of fireworks — just like buying a dog license. Could we not just find a more lasting, normal method of finding taxable revenue for this town such as attracting new businesses of all sectors and not keep on sending them back down the river like we recently did? Mission youth invited to enter video contest Adopt-A-Block challenges all Mission youth to participate in a videowebcast contest which began Jan. 1, 2011. The contest is an opportunity for youth to reach out to their peers and to influence them in taking care of the environment by offering a message of hope and environmental stewardship. Youth are asked to submit a video no longer than three minutes depicting a message about how to contribute to creating a litter free environment and why this is important. Following the March

15 contest submission deadline, entrants will post their submissions on YouTube for the community to judge until April 15. During this time youth will be encouraged to market their video to gain voting support. Top scoring videos by community votes will then be judged by a committee who will select the winning entries based on originality, creativity, content, clarity, quality and adherence to contest rules. The top three videos will be posted on AdoptA-Block’s website.

The Youth Video Challenge has gained the support of several Mission businesses which have donated prizes in-kind for several great prize packages which will be awarded in April. First place prize is $500. Second to fifth place prizes will also be awarded including gift cards for laser tag, a rafting adventure on the Fraser River, local restaurants and coffee shops, and large retail store gift cards. streams where they usually feed yielded disastrously poor chum salmon runs. The birds that often congregate in areas like Brackendale are instead ranging further inland because the chum came back poorly and this is not a year with any significant number of pink salmon returning. halis River near Harrison Hot Springs, where more coho salmon had been spawning. And Hancock estimated nearly 1,000 eagles were near the Vancouver Landfill in Delta from Boundary Bay to Burns Bog Monday. “We’ve got pushing pretty close to a thousand birds at the dump,” he said. The largest number he’s ever seen before in that area was 860. And never in his life, he said, has he seen as many birds within a couple of square kilometres as the record numbers at the Chehalis. “It’s really a statement on the devastation of our fishery stocks on the coast of British Columbia and Alaska,” he said. “We’ve got this huge early influx of eagles looking for dinner.” While an astonishing 30 million-plus sockeye salmon returned to the Fraser River this summer — a phenomenon some scientists theorize is a one-time jump due to an Alaskan volcano’s ash fertilizing the ocean — later running salmon species are critical to eagles. “It does not bode well for our coastal future,” Hancock said. “We’re not treating the oceans very well.” Eagles, despite their majestic appearance, are predominantly scavengers, he said. And it’s not uncommon to see them perusing dumps, which Hancock says aren’t that different from a stream filled with spawning salmon. In both cases, he said, eagles take advantage of the fact “there’s a lot of extra protein about to go to waste or be recycled.” Despite the large numbers of eagles being seen in the zone from Delta to Chilliwack, tens of thousands more should be on the coast right now. Hancock suspects the eagles that normally load up on B.C. and Alaskan salmon have ranged as far as the Mississippi River in pursuit of introduced fish stocks there.

THE MISSION RECORD – THURSDAY, JANUARY 6, 2011

Business lobby warns municipal spending on the rise too quickly Mission spending notching 1.64 times higher than inflation BY JEFF NAGEL Black Press

Most B.C. cities are ramping up spending far faster than is affordable, warns the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. The business lobby group’s third annual Municipal Spending Watch report found expenditures of B.C. cities rose twice as fast as the combined rate of inflation and population growth from 2000 to 2008. “They are addicted to overspending,” CFIB vice-president Laura Jones said, noting spending rose 58 per cent over those years, compared to a 29 per cent rise in inflation and population. The CFIB, which has repeatedly called for municipal budget restraint, says civic spending should be capped at the combined rate of population and inflation growth. Had that been done in 2000, the study says, the typical B.C. family of four would have had an extra $904 to spend in 2008 alone. Cities on average spent 9.7 per cent more on operating costs in 2008 than in 2007, while popula-

tion and inflation rose a combined four per cent. Jones said civic leaders are masters at making controversial spending cuts to “perpetuate the myth that they are hard done by” while neglecting to tackle other costs. “It’s grossly unfair to taxpayers who suffer tax and fee increases that outstrip their pay increases.” The report lists Prince George as the worst offender among large B.C. cities, with 2000-2008 spending climbing almost four times faster than inflation and population. In the Lower Mainland, spending rose more than three times faster in North Vancouver District (3.41) and West Vancouver (3.19); and two to three times faster in Pitt Meadows (2.8) North Vancouver City (2.76), White Rock (2.58), Maple Ridge (2.38), Delta (2.36), Chilliwack (2.34), Langley Township (2.33), Coquitlam (2.26), Langley City (2.14) and Port Coquitlam (2.12). Spending also outstripped population and inflation growth in Vancouver (1.92 times), Surrey (1.90), Richmond (1.83), Burnaby (1.67), Mission (1.64), Port Moody (1.38) and New Westminster (1.15). The business group says programs and services will ultimately

be at risk and it also wants a municipal Auditor-General created to oversee cities. Pitt Meadows Mayor Don MacLean said the CFIB is out of step with what most citizens want and are willing to pay for. “We buy what our constituents want us to buy,” MacLean said. “If our people want a new indoor swimming pool, we buy it for them.” If most citizens shared the business lobby’s view, he said, city councils would respond accordingly. “I’m a businessman,” added MacLean, who runs an insurance office. “Because their position is so stridently one-sided, I quit the CFIB three or four years ago. They’re not looking at the big picture.” Municipal leaders also contend unionized labour costs are difficult to control and there’s less fat to cut from local government than business critics believe. Cities in Metro Vancouver are bracing for a worsening cost squeeze in the years ahead. They say major utility expenses they say are being forced upon them by federal or provincial policies – including water and sewage treatment mega-projects estimated to cost billions of dollars.

Renewing licenses for 2011 Dog licenses The district would like to remind everyone that notices to purchase new dog licenses have recently been sent to all previously registered dog owners. If you purchase your dog license before Feb. 1, 2011 you will receive a discount of $5 for each license you purchase. The fees collected

are used to help fund the cost of animal control services in the municipality. Just as importantly, the license you purchase identifies you as the dog’s owner. This is important if you need to be contacted because your dog has been found or injured. If you do not purchase a license you will be in violation of the municipal

bylaw. If you have any questions or require more information, contact the Inspection Services Department at 604-820-3727. Dog licenses can be purchased either at District of Mission municipal hall located at 8645 Stave Lake St., or at Mission Animal Control Services located at 9541 Woodward St. Business licenses District of Mission municipal business license renewals have recently been sent to all previously registered businesses. Please note that Mission Business License Bylaw 39642007 states: • Section 9.3 which states that if a licensee continues to carry on business within the District of Mission and does not renew and pay for their license prior to Feb. 1 of each license period (Jan. 1 to Dec. 31), a late

payment fee calculated at 25 per cent of the annual license fee will be applied. • Section 9.4 which states that if a licensee continues to carry on business within the District of Mission and does not renew and pay for their license prior to March 1 of each license period (Jan. 1 to Dec. 31), a late payment fee calculated at 50 per cent of the annual license fee will be applied. Business License Bylaw 3964-2007 Section 3.1, also states that no person shall carry on any business within the district unless that person is the holder of a valid and subsisting license issued under the provisions of this bylaw for the business so carried on. For your convenience a drop off box is located at the front door of Municipal Hall for after hour and weekend deposits.

Street sweeping and snow removal From November to February District of Mission staff work during the night providing emergency response to adverse road conditions. During the warmer periods when roads do not require snow or ice removal, staff is assigned other tasks which include operating the street sweeping machine. This machine is used to pick up leaves and debris that accumulate in the gutters and catch basins. We realize it is an inconvenience to be woken by machinery in the middle of the night, but the work carried out is critical to everyone’s safety. The district apologizes for the inconvenience and hopes you understand it is for the good of the community.

Christmas turkeys Every Christmas Day at 1 p.m. you’ll see the same group of guys getting together at Heritage Park Secondary School for the Turkey Bowl. The Mission men have been gathering for 14 years and despite many having families of their own, many make the time to come out to keep the tradition alive. his past season marked an exceptional success for students involved in Hatzic’s volleyball programs. Hatzic offers a variety of ways for students to participate in the sport. There are low impact intramural teams which offer a fun way for anyone to participate, the Wild Cats Volleyball Club allows newcomers from all ages to become acquainted with the sport, and Volleyball Leadership classes teach students how to referee effectively, along with other volleyball-related skills. Each of these allow students to become involved in the sport and show skills which oftentimes do not come out in a classroom setting. During the past volleyball season, Hatzic’s competitive teams met with exceptional success in league play. All five finished first in the district in their respective divisions, and many found further success in later competitions: The Grade 8 boys team finished fifth in the Abbotsford-Mission league, and first in the Thunder in the Valley tournament. Our Grade 8 girls team set a league record with 12 wins and two losses, and placed second in the Thunder in

the Valley Tournament while the junior girls team finished sixth in the Abbotsford Mission league, first in the Thunder in the Valley Tournament and second in the Highroad Academy in Chilliwack. The senior boys qualified for the Fraser Valleys for the first time in five years and the senior girls finished second in the GW Graham Bear Paw Classic, seventh in Fraser Valley, and qualified for the gold medal draw at Volley Fest in Burnaby. None of Hatzic’s success would have come without a strong set of students and coaches. Curtis Chaplin, Caroline Chezzi, Fernando Goncalves, Michael MacBlain, and Lorraine Mar made up this year’s coaching staff, along with student coaches Adam Chaplin and Sara Dougan. Although these volunteers put in many hours of work, the satisfaction they received made it well worth it. If anyone has an interest in becoming a part of Hatzic’s volleyball programs by coaching or simply participating, contact Caroline Chezzi or Hatzic Secondary School at 604-8263651. - Submitted by Hatzic student Ross McLean

ONTS wraps up holiday pantomime, begins works on new spring show If you didn’t catch Opening Nite Theatre Society’s pantomime, Hercules, before Christmas there’s still to time to enjoy it. The holiday show runs this weekend, Jan. 7-9. Shows on Fridays and Saturdays are at 8 p.m. and Sunday’s show will be at 2 p.m. If you aren’t familiar with the term pantomime, don’t worry, you are not alone. A pantomime is a British theatre tradition held during the holiday season; they are kid-friendly but far from kidexclusive as people of all ages are sure to get a thrill from this ridiculous foray into the impossible. Hercules is written and directed by Opening Nite’s Camille Knight. Hercules the Panto tells the tale of Hercules and his friends, Perseus and Princess Ambrosia, as they struggle to thwart the dastardly plans of the evil Medusa who is being backed by the equally

evil, though not as ugly, Fairy Naughty. Hercules’ first attempt to stop the snake-headed villain meets with disastrous results and provokes Hercules into isolation on the Island of Myth-fits, where he finds a three-eyed Cyclops, a backwards centaur and an Oracle who smells the future. With the world’s population being turned to stone by the enterprising Fairy Naughty and Medusa at an alarming rate, Fairy Nice arrives and convinces Perseus and Princess Ambrosia that they must find Hercules in order to save the world. The show features a wide assortment of crazy characters played by a wide assortment of talented actors. There are many twists on classic songs you’re sure to recognize, and promises to be some of the most fun you and your families will have this holiday season. Tickets are only $12, $6 for chil-

dren, and children under three are admitted free. For more information visit www. onts.org.

Mousetrap auditions Opening Nite Theatre will be conducting auditions for its spring play, The Mousetrap, by Agatha Christie. The show will be directed by Gerwyn Mills and is in need of three female actors of various ages and five male actors, also of different ages. Auditions will take place Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 22 at 1 p.m. at Opening Nite Theatre, 33227 N. Railway Ave. Evening performance dates will be March 31, April 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16 and matinees will be April 3, 10, 17. The Mousetrap is about a group of strangers stranded in a boarding

house during a snow storm, one of whom is a murderer. The suspects include a married couple who run the house, a spinster with a curious background, an architect who seems better equipped to be a chef, a retired army major, a strange little man who claims his car is overturned in a snowdrift, a jurist who makes everyone’s life miserable, and a policeman. The Mousetrap, a murder mystery play, opened in the West End of London in 1952, and has been running continuously since then. It has the longest initial run of any play in history, with over 24,000 performances so far. Volunteers are also required for a stage manager, front-of-house, props, costumes, publicity, etc. If you would like to be involved in theatre, you will find volunteering with this production an interesting and satisfying experience. For more information call 604820-8622.

The Ontario-based band will be playing at the Clarke Theatre Feb. 9 with special guests. Finger Eleven is touring the country beginning this month to promote its fifth album, Life Turns Electric. Whatever Doesn’t Kill Me and Living a Dream from the new album are already getting a lot of radio time. Finger Eleven has worked on the road non-stop and released successful albums such as Tip and its followup, The Greyest of Blue Skies. By the time the group released its third, self-titled album, it had built a solid career. The band’s success took off after it released Them vs. You vs. Me, featuring Paralyzer. The album went gold in the U.S. and platinum in Canada and won Rock Album of the Year at the 2008 Junos. Finger Eleven’s string

What’s Happening in Mission

KEEP LEARNING The Italian phrase “Ancora Imparo,” which means “I am still learning,” is said to have been uttered by Michelangelo when he was 87 years old. Some might find it more than a little ironic that such a genius and true Renaissance man as Michelangelo would still be learning near the end of his life - he died at the age of 88 - but it was precisely his insatiable curiosity and desire to keep learning that made him the great artist, inventor, and engineer that he was. Think of how much poorer the world would be if he had refused to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel simply because he thought of himself primarily as a sculptor and didn’t want to stretch his talents. And, when you look at his great sculptures, such as the Pieta and the David, you can readily understand why he thought of himself primarily as a sculptor. But fortunately, he was willing to continue to learn and expand his knowledge and talents. The universe is inexhaustible; there is no end to the writing of books or the acquisition of knowledge, or the making of art. And while this thought should give us pause and even humble us, it should also equally excite and interest us. What a wonderful journey of exploration and adventure we are on! Keep learning. There is a whole universe out there just waiting to be discovered!

A wise man will hear and increase learning, and a man of understanding will attain wise counsel. New K.J.V. Proverbs 1:5 St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church 8469 Cedar Street • 826-8481 10:30 am Worship & Children's Church Rev. Bob Garvin Interim Minister

It is with sadness that we announce the death of our father, Peter Enns, who died peacefully on 29 December 2010 surrounded by his family. Peter was born in Arkadak, South Russia, the second of seven children born to Jacob and Maria (Paetkau) Enns. The family immigrated to Canada in 1926 and settled in Chortitz, Manitoba. This is where Peter helped his father farm. In 1936, he got the urge to leave home and headed to Alberta where he and his friend, Ike Dyke, hoed sugar beets. In the fall of 1936, the two headed to BC via rail in November through Crows’ Nest Pass arriving in Chilliwack to find no snow, but beautiful weather. They made their way to Peter’s grandparents in what, at that time, was known as Sumas, later Greendale. Peter worked odd jobs before he and his two brothers, Dave and John, started a store known as Enns’ Brothers General Store. They opened their store on the 21 of June 1947 only to be flooded out on 1 June, 1948. They rebuilt and soon the two brothers departed and Peter became the sole owner. He operated the store for 30 years selling in 1977. After which he and his son Ernie went into the sausage (Valley Maid) business for 10 years before Peter retired. In 1999 Peter and Susan moved to Menno Terrace in Abbotsford. Peter was predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Maria, brothers Jake, Abe, Dave and John as well as sister Mary; also one greatgrandchild Joshua Enns. He is survived by his wife, Susan, of 69 years, and son Ernie, his wife Evelyn, their children Diana Sagert, Darrin, Bradina, and his favorite great granddaughter Avaya. He is also survived by his sister, Marj, of Morden, MB, plus numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A visitation will be held on Friday, January 7 from 7 - 9 p.m. at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford. A private family graveside service will be held at Greendale Cemetery. A Celebration of Peter’s life will be held on Saturday, January 8 at 1 p.m. at Greendale MB Church, 6550 Sumas Prairie Road, Chilliwack, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations to MCC would be appreciated. Online condolences may be given at: www.woodlawnfh-abbotsford.com

Born June 27, 1941 in Matsqui, BC to James Clifford and Stella Grace MacKenzie (nee Mathers) of Straiton; she grew up and lived most of her working life in the Fraser Valley. She worked at the Bank of Commerce in Abbotsford before moving to Vancouver for a few years and taking time off to begin a family with husband, Elwin Kelly. After the family returned to Abbotsford, she worked at Mahoney’s Bakery until she was volunteered to help with a centennial project of the local Women’s Institutes. This adventure resulted in a move to Victoria in 1989 to become the BC Museums and Galleries Advisor after having served as the first curator of the MSA Museum from its inception in 1969. Career changes brought her back to the Valley working in the Telephone Museum in Aldergrove and then for Mission Native Housing and going on to establish the Learning Centre (computer school) in Mission. After the sale of the school, Diane worked in programming at the British Columbia Forrest Museum in Duncan. Retirement brought her back to the Valley, first to Abbotsford and then to Mission. The variation in her volunteer career rivaled that of her professional. Diane will be missed by her siblings, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews and numerous friends. The memorial services will be held at 11 am, Saturday, January 8th at Straiton Community Hall, 4698 Sumas Mountain Road, Abbotsford. Donations in lieu of flowers are welcomed to Straiton Community Club or Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of Canada.

Pride of Ownership! This is an absolutely beautiful home that is only 6 yrs old c/w balance of new home warranty plus transferable warranty on the appliances until 2015. There is definitely curb appeal walking into your new home with Kwik Curb at the front and flower beds built around the lower patio looking out onto Greenbelt. This home has 4 bedrooms usable to upstairs and the opportunity of a 2 bedroom mortgage helper down. It also features a heat pump, 2” faux wood blinds upstairs, a kitchen island, appliances (including a double oven) and satellite and cable wired in all of the rooms. It’s a must see.
