Leave some areas open for hunting: speakers

MISSION SENIORS A monthly guide to events, resources and services for Mission Seniors

Mission Record

Proposed changes to Mission’s firearms discharge bylaw were soundly criticized by a large crowd of mostly hunters June 19. The District of Mission council is contemplating banning all shooting throughout the municipality, except at the Mission and District Rod and Gun Club (MDRGC). “The primary issue for this council is the problems encountered in the interpretive forest area, said Mayor Ted Adlem in an earlier interview with The Record. “We’re dealing with an enormous cost for policing. The interpretive forest is located on the west side of Stave Lake, near the Zajac Ranch for Children, and close to the proposed Tim Hortons Children’s Foundation camp and

Sayres Lake campground. Adlem said many people will not go into that region because of the number of individuals shooting guns and the associated litter left behind. The hunters who spoke said they are not the ones causing the problems, and this proposed bylaw change would not solve the trouble. “I grew up here and I grew up hunting, said Bill Cameron. “We don’t do what’s going on up there. Illegal shooting is the problem. [This amendment] is not going to stop illegal shooting. He suggested the fine for littering be increased to $5,000 and that this proposal is punishing hunters and those families who count that activity as part of their culture, a See REPORT Page 5

The Mission Seniors Advisory Committee wishes to offer our most sincere thanks to those local seniors organizations, senior residences, bus transportation people and all of the volunteers who made Seniors Week (May 31-June 8) a success. Helping others can improve your health. Consider volunteering in the community, like being a mentor for children, or creating uplifting rituals, such as going for walks around the neighbourhood.

Both the District of Mission and the Mission Community Foundation have been most gracious in their support that has helped various events throughout the community for the celebration of seniors. Our biggest thanks go to you, Mission seniors, in your support of the week’s events and what you have done for your community all of the years past.

Spirit of helping others

C

arry the spirit of helping others. Your blood pressure and the rest of your health may depend on it. Research shows that older people who feel happy and hopeful, have a sense of selfworth and enjoy life (all feelings that can come from helping people) and have lower blood pressure compared with their more pessimistic peers. Why? Because good feelings can help reduce the effects of

stress and prevent highblood pressure (plus a cascade of other maladies). If you weren’t born with a glass half-full outlook, you can cultivate one — even when the job market, your bank account and maybe even your spirits are a little bit (or a lot) down. Helping others is just one way. Try these suggestions: • Say thanks. Once a week, think of someone who has had an effect

on your life — big or small — and write him or her, a note of gratitude. It not only makes the person feel connected and healthy, but some research shows that 15 minutes of daily gratitude can dramatically decrease stress hormones in your body, too. • Create rituals. One of the reasons why religious services or music can be so uplifting is that the weekly rituals reinforce a healthy sense of

community (and, interestingly, the more connected we feel, the higher our degree of generosity and compassion). Rituals don’t need to be religious to be effective. You might be uplifted by nature walks with a group in your neighbourhood or by a nightly dinner-time routine where everyone in your family shares something great that happened to them that day. — Submitted by MCSS
