Big savings found BY JASON ROESSLE Mission Record

Living in the Lower Mainland, water is often taken for granted. No more for one school board employee. Popular local environmentalist and Mission teacher Jim Taylor recently took on the mantle at the district level of manager of energy conservation, allowing him to indulge his passion for green-themed ideals for the benefit of the school district. When presented with the opportunity, one of Taylor’s first mandates was to ensure his job generates enough savings to justify his paycheque. And he’s off to a screaming start. “For someone like me who’s been inside the system for 30 years, it’s very interesting,” he said, “and amazing what we take for granted.” Unbeknownst to Taylor, and he suspects most others, the school district has always paid for water. “Water was an excellent place to start” looking for savings once he learned this news and he now figures some simple, relatively low-cost steps will enable

Mission Public Schools to save upwards of $110,000 a year. The worst culprits? Domestic water for washrooms and irrigation, said the longtime member of the Stave Valley Salmonid Enhancement Society and administrator of MPSD’s E-Team. Some of the washroom facilities in certain schools were flushing regularly, without anyone using them. Taylor says he’s fond of common sense approaches to problems and determined approximately $1,000 worth of upgrades to the worst washroom culprits will net immediate savings. Irrigation is another main water consumer, said Taylor. After meeting with counterparts at the District of Mission, the school district and municipality will be allowing most fields to go brown this summer. However, the sod-based fields require regular watering otherwise they will die. And given the fields are each valued between $200,000 and $300,000, this won’t be allowed to happen, said Taylor. These two are easy to fix, he claimed, noting his gaze is now set on fixtures, garbage reduction and printing costs.

IHIT investigating a suspicious death Police were called to a home on Keystone Monday night. A man’s body was found inside. JASON ROESSLE PHOTO

Homicide investigators were in Mission late Monday night after a body was found in the 30700 block of Keystone Avenue. Yellow police tape blocked off the driveway of the property a short distance away from the road. The heavily treed area allows little to be visible of the property — surrounded by a black chain link fence — from the welltravelled thoroughfare. Police were called to the area around 11:11 p.m. June 28 and officers confirmed

the deceased man inside the home met with foul play but are not saying how the man died. Police believe there were suspicious circumstances surrounding the death but didn’t elaborate further. “Investigators will be working throughout the rural neighbourhood conducting inquiries to see what if anything neighbours will be able to offer as information regarding a timeline,” said Integrated Homicide Investigation Team spokesman Cpl. Dale

Carr. “We are hopeful neighbours will recall anything out of the ordinary they saw over the past few days.” The victim has been identified but police are withholding his name to allow next of kin to contact other family. An autopsy will be conducted to help determine the cause and manner of the death. Anyone with information about this is asked to call the IHIT tip line at 1-877-551IHIT. Local Lions club goes out with a roar BY CAROL AUN Mission Record

It was a celebration like no other. Members of the Mission and District Lions Club met for dinner for the final time under the club banner on Saturday, June 26, four days before the club officially dissolved — but the occasion was marked with happy memories and not sad tears. “This has been coming for a long time,” said Marilyn Butchart, who at 62 years old is the youngest member of the club. “It’s difficult to get young people to join.” Club member Wendy Wenberg estimates 10 new members would have to join in order to keep the club going. “Young people don’t have time now and most people work out of the community,” she added. “Nobody wants to see it close, but it’s time,” said Butchart. “When you have three or four people doing everything, it makes it difficult.” “The spark has diminished,” noted Wenberg. One of the older members wanted to keep it going, but in his heart, he knew it couldn’t continue. During the club’s March meeting, the issue was discussed again and in April when the fate of the club was put to a vote, everybody

Mayor James Atebe (centre, back row) is pictured here with the last members of the Mission and District Lions Club. Seated front row (left to right): Erna Friesen, Wendy Wenberg, Barb Beaton, Buster Beaton and Jan Donatelli, who isn’t a member. Back row (left to right): Dave Friesen, Marilyn Butchart, Terry Gidda, Mayor James Atebe, Rick Butchart, Bill McDonald, George Millett, Rosina Swyck, and Mike Donatelli. raised their hands to fold things up. “It’s sad to see it come to an end. We had so much fun,” noted Wenberg, an 18-year member. “I’ve been friends with these people for many, many years.” The MDLC has been in Mission for 61 years and many members had smiles on their faces as they recalled the earlier days. At the Agricultural Fair, when it existed in Mission, we invented the Leo burger and it was so popular we couldn’t make them fast

enough, said Wenberg. It had two beef patties and two slices of cheese, recalled Dave Friesen as best he could. Bingo was also a riot for the gang and there was a Hog and Kiss contest in 1986 but nobody could recall who won (or lost) the contest. Contestants were then-mayor John Agnew, Dave Miller, Neville Cox, Sophie Weremchuk and Effie Hutcheson. Members of the public voted on their favourite with a donation and the person who raised

the most money kissed the pig. The club also hosted Halloween dances and in 1980 started a Reno Nite. Other fundraising activities included bowling, a corn roast, hobby show, scarp metal drive, log sale, carnation sale, pancake breakfast, raffles, Bavarian night, beer garden and the concession trailer. All the money the club raised was used to help Mission. The club received the Long Term Distinguished Service Award from the district this year.

You’ve made such a difference in the community, Mayor James Atebe told the club. “Those who have benefited from your passion can never say enough thank yous to you all. Our community is a better place.” The club is passing on the tradition of lighting the massive tree on the Lougheed Highway every Christmas to the chamber of commerce. Every year Friesen and Buster Beaton would lay the long string of lights on the front lawn and inspect each bulb. Some members, like Wenberg and Butchart, are still committed to helping the community even after the club is gone. They vow to continue setting up a Christmas Dinner for the Lonely to make the holidays more cheerful for those who otherwise wouldn’t be celebrating. “We’re still here,” they say, but they note it might be more difficult to get community support and funding without the Lions banner. The Mission and District Lions Club has been a part of the community, helping it grow, for more than 60 years. The club was sponsored by the Maple Ridge Club and was chartered in November 1949. Gordon Young was the club’s first president and Erna Friesen is the last. The club’s last day was June 30.

MCE working to reduce garbage by 75 per cent Mission Central won’t put up with the same old garbage. The local elementary school staff and students have set a goal to eliminate at least 75 per cent of the garbage they produce. The school decided earlier this spring they would lead a pilot project that would remove all compost and blue bag material from school garbage. In May, a school garbage audit showed 78 per cent of waste headed to the landfill could be recycled. Students calculated the school was needlessly sending nearly five tonnes of recyclable materials to the landfill each year. At the beginning of June, staff and students started to divert compost and blue bag materials to recycling facilities. The District of Mission provided compost containers and training on how to sort materials. “The results of our waste diversion program have been absolutely astounding. Our school of approximately 270 students now produces just slightly more than one bag of garbage each day,” said school principal, Brian Barber. Amber Chung’s Grade 3-4 class has taken responsibility for collecting blue bag materials and

The data is updated daily and it is an effective way to check vehicles. This is how it works: The camera is mounted on a police vehicle which is parked away from the flow of traffic. ALPR can read up to 3,000 plates an hour and vehicle speeds of up to 240 km/h. If a plate is flagged, the officers set up a short distance away can pull it over, confirm the reading and take the necessary action. It can capture both the front and back plates, said Const. George Teixeira, Mission’s traffic services supervisor. “We’ve used it three times this year and we’ve found a few stolen vehicles, prohibited drivers and uninsured ones, said Teixeira. ALPR has been available for the last three years but it’s new to Mission Mounties. Police are also using handheld lasers more often than traditional radar to track how fast a vehicle is travelling. “This is a newer technology and it’s a lot more versatile, said Const. Alyn Beerda. “It’s easier to use and it can get readings within one kilometre. Laser reads at a speed of light, explained Teix-

eira. “Once you pull the trigger, you can get a reading. Because it’s not stationed, officers can pick a vehicle out of the pack and get an accurate reading. In addition to speed, police are also targeting aggressive drivers and enforcing laws regarding the use of seat belts and using a hand-held device, such as cell phones and MP3 players, while driving. Recently, Mission RCMP teamed up with the Integrated Road Safety Unit to keep an eye on traffic on First Avenue and pull over drivers violating the rules. In two hours, police pulled over 13 drivers not weren’t wearing a seatbelt and nine using cell phones. Prohibited cell phone use includes dialing and texting while driving and you can only talk if using a hands-free device. New drivers are forbidden to use either. Police will also be looking for vehicles with tinted front windows too, added Const. Phil Paterson. “If your car came with smoked windows, it’s still safety glass and if it breaks it will split into 1,000 pieces, said Paterson. However, if the windows are darkened with a film, which will hold the glass together if it’s broken, it makes it difficult for rescuers to gain access if you are involved in a crash.

THE MISSION RECORD – THURSDAY, JULY 1, 2010

OPINION

Published and printed by Black Press Ltd. at Mission at 33047 First Ave., V2V 1G2

Celebrate with pride On this Canada Day eve, it may feel like we’ve got a lot to complain about: The weather. The new line item that will appear on the bottom of our Wendy’s receipt starting tomorrow and which will render our pockets a few cents lighter. The absence of the Canadian team in the World Cup. But today we get to put those complaints aside and celebrate just being who we are: Canadians. Canada Day is the one day of the year we can get away with wearing red and white and not look like members of a barbershop quartet. There’s a lot to celebrate about being Canadian: The weather. Really, four seasons of sunshine and warmth would be boring. Hockey. A soccer player in the World Cup gets brushed ever-so-lightly by a stray elbow and crumples to the turf as if he’d been shot; a hockey player loses seven teeth to a frozen puck, collects his shattered chiclets from the ice and is back for his next shift. Our banking system. Sure all those annoying fees for ATM withdrawls and money transfers add up to multi-billion dollar profits, but at least the banks don’t come crawling to the government for bailout money so their executives can continue adding to their Maserati collections with bonuses they earned for floating questionable loans to customers who could ill afford them. Our health care system. Flawed as it is, with long waits for surgeries, and crowded emergency wards, somehow people do get better without having to worry about being driven from their hospital bed into the poor house. So get out this Canada Day and celebrate our country. Don’t be shy. — Burnaby/New Westminster NewsLeader

Korean War not all that’s forgotten

P

ANMUNJOM, KOREA – There is no better place on Earth than here at Korea’s demilitarized zone to observe the contrast between democratic capitalism and state control. The DMZ is little more than an hour’s drive north of Seoul, now the 10th largest city in the world and a model of industrial, technological and social innovation. Directly ahead, beyond a grey fortress guarded by soldiers and land mines, is North Korea, the world’s last Stalinist dictatorship. Not much can be seen beyond: a couple of guard towers, a propaganda village with a huge North Korean flag, and distant hills largely stripped of trees by imprisoned people in need of any food and fuel they can find. My visit here was with a group of Korean War veterans from Canada, Britain, Australia, the United States, Greece, Ethiopia and other allied countries to mark the 60th anniversary of the Korean War. It began June 25, 1950 with a swift and brutal invasion by North Korea, armed and manipulated by Stalin and Mao Tse Tung,

around itself, a signal that last year’s nuclear test may soon be followed by shortrange missile tests. And yet, there are signs of hope. A Canadian Forces officer still presides over entries and exits to the Kaesong Industrial Complex, built recently by Hyundai and other South Korean corporations inside North Korea. It employs North Koreans and has not been shut down by their regime despite tensions over the unprovoked torpedoing of a South Korean patrol ship in March. China still backs North Korea, but its patience is being tested. Twice in the past month, Chinese businessmen have been arrested for straying beyond authorized travel areas on sales trips inside North Korea. In the first of these incidents, three of these newly entrepreneurial Chinese citizens were shot and killed. Even here, capitalism is slowly winning the long war with communism. No Code Blue will check your pulse at the Envision Twilight Concert Series at Fraser River Heritage Park in Mission on Friday, July 2 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. No Code Blue is a group of six medical professionals and two businessmen dedicated to enjoying a wide variety of music genres from jazz, rock and roll, funk to country and western. No Code Blue plays mostly for charities and fundraisers, helping community groups. No Code Blue’s performance is sponsored by Mission Calla Lilies and More. The Envision Twilight Art in the Park program features Lori Friskie’s pressed flower art and Gina Esche’s magnetite jewelry. Annie Lou plays at Fraser River Heritage Park on Friday, July 7 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. When Yukon songwriters Kim Barlow and Anne Louise Genest discovered a shared joy in the string band sounds and story songs of Southern old time music, they joined their musical forces (Juno-nominated Barlow on clawhammer banjo and vocals and Genest on guitar and vocals) to form Annie Lou. The fine skills of Lindy Jones on upright bass and vocals and Meredith Bates on fiddle round out the Annie Lou roster. Old-time music is based on instrumental, vocal, and songwriting traditions. Annie Lou is faithful to these, with stringband instrumentation, rich vocal harmonies, and original songwriting that is fresh and new, yet firmly rooted in the old. Annie Lou’s performance is sponsored by Pete’s Place Pizza. The Envision Twilight Art in the Park program features the inspirational art of Pam Ellis and Roxane McCallum’s aboriginal jewelry and art. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and come to the park. The Log Cabin CafÊ and the Blackberry Kitchen are open for business. Admission is free but donations are appreciated. TO ROW THE OARS OR UNFURL THE SAILS Our journey through life is sometimes described as a boat ride. Sometimes we take an active role in that ride, steering the boat or rowing the oars. Other times, we take a more passive role, unfurling the sails and letting the wind pull us along. There are times in life when we must be active to get what we want; a rowboat won’t go very far on calm water without someone working the oars. But there are times in life when we really don’t have much control over things, and we can just go with the flow. But even then, we need to make sure we are facing in the right direction. A strong wind may make our journey a lot easier, but only if the boat is pointing in the right direction. We are all on a journey to the heart of God. Sometimes we need to take the oars in our hands and row. Other times, we just need to unfurl our sails and catch the wind of God. But in either case, we need to be heading in the right direction. Fortunately, God has implanted in us a moral compass, our conscience, which lets us know whether we are on the right track or not. We should pay attention to what our moral compass is telling us, follow it with integrity, and row the oars or unfurl the sails, as the situation demands.

By rejecting conscience, certain persons have made shipwreck of their faith. R.S.V. 1 Timothy 1: 19

away and keep barbecues clean. If you have a backyard composter, add only small amounts of fruit and vegetable scraps at a time and immediately mix them in with the compost. Sprinkling garden lime on compost speeds up the decomposition process and decreases odours. Never put dairy products, bread or meat in your backyard composter. Always make ample noise if you are in an area where bears can be expected. If you do encounter a bear, stay calm and speak to it in a calm, firm voice to let him know you are a person. A mother with cubs may “bluff” charge at you, if she perceives you as a threat to her young, but will likely stop short of actual contact. If this happens, back away slowly, continuing to talk to the bear. If a black bear actually attacks you, fight back. Carrying bear spray is a good idea, but can only serve as a last resort in case of actual conflict. Prevention is by far the best strategy. For more info visit: www.env. gov.bc.ca/cos/info/wildlife_human_ interaction/docs/conflicts_policy.html# and www.bearaware.bc.ca.

It’s a fact: bears live in our neighbourhoods. While we may enjoy the occasional glimpse from a safe distance, inviting bears into our backyards can create serious hazards. With a growing bear population and residential developments advancing further into bear habitat, it is everyone’s responsibility to make sure that bears and people stay at a safe distance from each other. One person’s bad habits can create problems for a whole neighbourhood. To avoid unwanted encounters with bears, store your garbage in a bearresistant garbage container in a secure building. Do not put out your garbage and compost materials until the morning of collection. Pick up fallen fruit promptly and feed your pets indoors. Even bird feeders can attract a hungry bear, so remove them between April and November and stretch piano wire at least three metres off the ground to hang them in the winter. Did you know that the smell of petroleum also attracts bears? Ensure that all rubber, tar paper, paint, turpentine, kerosene and charcoal fluids are put

The building on the southwest corner of First Avenue and Welton Street has been home to a hardware store since 1921. But as of last Friday (June 25), Home Hardware closed its doors and ended the 89-year reign of home improvement at that location. Members of the Mission Downtown Business Association and shop supporters said farewell and wished owner Rick Kyba well in his future endeavours. “I want to thank Rick and his employees for their confidence in investing in the community, said Mayor James Atebe. “The quality of life we enjoy here is because of people like him.

With tears in his eyes Kyba told the group closing the store was a “tough decision to make. “Your support for the last four years has been amazing. Kyba bought the store in 2006 and had hoped to run it for many years

then pass it to his children but his doctor had warned him again to look after his health. “I need to take some stress out of my life and get better, said Kyba who will miss his customers the most. “For health reasons, I had to

do it. The economy had a little to do with it. Kyba plans to relax and take the summer off before getting involved in another job or project — once cleared by his physician. The historic building is now for sale.

Roadrunner QB makes Team BC BY JASON ROESSLE Mission Record

You always have to watch the quiet ones. Sitting across from Tanner Pearce, the calm, centered, multi-sport athlete, you’d be hard-pressed to imagine him laying someone out on the football field or helming the offensive game for the Mission Roadrunners. But the unassuming Grade 11 student can do both and further proved his chops by making Football BC’s provincial team. Pearce, who has been playing football since Grade 8, made the squad and will play free safety at the upcoming nationals in Nova Scotia July 10-17. The team of 16-18 year olds will play at least three games one day apart, with a fourth possible if they make the finals. The Team BC selection began in April with over 200 players from around the province attending one of four identification camps and 97 of those players were invited to a training camp at SFU at the end of May. Pearce also plays lacrosse and basketball but within the last year he started to get noticed by other teams for his football prowess; his coach wasn’t surprised. “Tanner is a very good multi-sport

athlete, who I expect to be playing football someplace next year,” said Kevin Watrin. “He is a strong and smart football player. As a quarterback he throws a nice ball and can run our offense efficiently, but his greatest weapon is his escapability. When a play breaks down, he is quite difficult for opposing defenses to track down and tackle.” Watrin added Pearce has an excellent opportunity to put his skills to the test against some of the best players in the country. All for a student who started as a linebacker in Grade 8, earning defensively player of the year three years in a row. “I tried at quarterback in Grade 8 and didn’t really like it,” he said. When the team strategy went more to a passing game in Grade 10, Pearce decided to try his hand again at tossing the pigskin and found it fit better this time. Going into his senior year, Pearce is excited about the Roadrunners’ potential for a provincial title. The team came close last year and many of the same players are returning, he explained. Past that, he aims to push for a university football scholarship to help fully or partially fund education in architecture or engineering.

Tanner Pearce will represent British Columbia next month when he goes to Nova Scotia to play football with Team BC. NEIL CORBETT PHOTO

Use your best spring fishing tactics this weekend “T

he wind blows where it pleases. You hear the sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going.” Over the past few years we have noticed changes in our weather patterns. Some say it global warming others say it’s a cycle. Whatever is causing these changes, wind is an agent in it. As an observer of weather and its effect on fish activity, I was fascinated to recently hear that the majority of our incoming winds, have changed direction, from west to south. These warmer south winds are more turbulent, causing frequent storms and seasonal weather. I learned many years ago that time-

less things cannot be restricted to the time frames of men. Weather patterns of the last decade are witness to that truth. Our Roman calendar tells us it’s summer, but the seasonal weather we have been experiencing is that of late May or early June. The ant hatch that occurred over this past weekend tells me that our Lower Mainland insects are more aware of the true season than we are. So what does all this mean to you as anglers? In short, use spring tactics for Canada Day and the unofficial long weekend. Have fun out there. The report Fishing on our Lower Mainland lakes is at its best. For wet (sink-

ing) fly fishing try: Big Black, Nation’s Black, Red Spratley, Baggy Shrimp, Coachman, Cased Caddis, Halfback, Dragon Nymph, Carey special, Zulu, or Doc Spratley. THE MISSION RECORD – THURSDAY, JULY 1, 2010

FVRD installing gatehouse at Dewdney A gatehouse will be operational by July long weekend at Dewdney Nature Park. This new structure was a requirement by the Dewdney Area Improvement District (DAID) in preparing the new threeyear lease to manage the park. The Fraser Valley Regional District does not own the land in the area of the park; it has been a lease with DAID for 20 years. As a result of water craft ignoring the eight km/h speed limit

in Nicomen slough, the gatehouse was needed. The speed restriction was introduced as federal legislation in the late 1960s to protect the dikes. During the past few years, Nicomen slough has turned into a playground for water skiers and personal watercraft, said a Fraser Valley Regional District press release. When the park was established 20 years ago, its sole purpose was for anglers to access the

Fraser River and for late fall fishermen to troll in Nicomen slough. Waterskiers will now be turned back at the gatehouse. The park fees will be identical as Island 22 Regional Park, seasonal passes for anglers and commercial guides will be sold at the gatehouse. As a pilot project, a caretaker will spend the night

on weekends so anglers that want to camp on the gravel bars can leave their vehicles in the park. It is hoped the $20/night fee will subsidize caretaker costs. Anglers can increase their boat launch pass from the regular $50 to $100. This additional cost will permit overnight vehicles on as many weekends as anglers desire.

THE MISSION RECORD – THURSDAY, JULY 1, 2010

Going for gold honours VOTED ABBOTSFORD’S

Which city can conserve the most water? Through July and August the City of Abbotsford and the District of Mission will compete for “gold” bragging rights related to water conservation measurements. Water usage rates for both locations will be monitored and compared against last year’s consumption rates. The city with the greater amount of conservation over last year will accept the gold medal for water conservation from the opposing city. Beginning July 1, 2010 through to Aug. 30, the following restrictions will be in place: lawn sprinkling is completely prohibited (hand-held vegetable and flower sprinkling allowed); spring-loaded shut-off nozzles are required on all hoses; non re-circulating fountains must be turned off; wading pools should be filled only when required; and new lawn permits will not be available. All city/district-owned parks and cemeteries comply with watering restrictions, and some parks irrigate with water from other sources, such as wells.

Schools will be buying one 48-passenger diesel school bus with funds from the province. The government has invested $12.5 million for 106 new buses across

B.C. to help reduce emissions and improve air quality. The Mission unit is valued at $114,000. These new buses reduce exhaust particulate emissions by 90 per cent

compared to the previous 1994 standard. Clean diesel buses also produce 30 to 60 per cent better mileage than gasolinefuelled buses and provide longer service.
