Large commercial development proceeding without anchor tenant BY
CAROL AUN
Mission Record
Fraser Valley Shopping Centres is proposing to build a large commercial development in the 31900 block of the Lougheed Highway, between the Mission Springs Restaurant and Mission Auto Body. The aim is to construct a large 94,500 square foot anchor store and four smaller buildings ranging in size from 3,000 to 10,000 sq. ft. The entire site is made up of four parcels of land totaling about nine acres. The area is flat at the front, but slopes significantly at the back. Mission council passed the first two readings in order to move the process forward and allow the community a chance to comment on the plan at a public hearing on Aug. 30. There are still some issues, such as traffic, that need to be worked out, and more information should be available when the application comes up for third reading. According to the report to council, a tenant for the main building has not been secured. Councillor Mike Scudder was the only one opposed to the recommendation, and Coun. Paul Horn was absent from the meeting. Although he is mindful of economic development in the community, Scudder said he doesn’t want to ask the public for comments without knowing what the main store will be.
The community won’t know how it would affect their lives, said Scudder. “It’s premature.” “Traditionally we try to, whenever possible, to let these applications go to public hearing to gain more information and then take the steps needed before going to third reading,” said Coun. Jenny Stevens. “I would hesitate giving third reading without knowing what business ... or at least the type of tenant, so the public can at least know if they’re selling fish sticks or Cadillacs.” Mayor James Atebe noted Scudder’s concerns are important ones, but the questions can only be asked if the application is put forward for comment. The developers plan will build the site in phases in order to find occupants for the buildings as soon as possible. In a letter to council, they say “Constructing buildings in advance of having tenants in place would not only render the project both infeasible and uneconomical, but having vacant buildings would detract from the balance of the shopping centre through a negative impression.” The developers attended the Tuesday night council meeting, but did not indicate what kind of business would occupy the site. The public hearing for this proposal is scheduled for Aug. 30, beginning at 6:30 p.m. inside council chambers.

100 feet on Monday. He landed in a three foot deep creek bed on his back, said Mission RCMP Sgt Miriam Dickson. The man was walking along the cliffs with some friends when the accident happened. Because of the steep terrain, it took rescuers three hours to reach the victim and bring him out. He was taken out of the area by ambulance and then by air ambulance to Royal Columbian Hospital. His injuries are considered non-life threatening. Davis Lake provincial park and Lost Creek are popular outdoor recreation areas located about 19 km north of Mission, past Sylvester Road. There are a number of waterfalls in the area, added Dickson.

Benefit for cancer patient BY CAROL AUN Mission Record
Kingsway Arms at Cedarbrooke is hosting a “Positively Outrageous Event” to help one of its employees through a devastating situation. As the kitchen supervisor for the Seventh Avenue facility, Stella Camacho knew she had a great job. Her employers care about the well-being of staff and the residents take a genuine interest in getting involved. “It’s like a big family here,” said Camacho, who realized how much everyone thought of her when her son was diagnosed with testicular cancer in April. Camacho tried to hide her tears at work and told concerned residents that it was her allergies. They didn’t believe her, and she was touched at how much they cared. “The residents here have been through a lot and they make me feel strong,” she said. Camacho’s 23-yearold son Sergio was living in Port Coquitlam and working in construction

“We were very surprised and very sad about the news.” Sergio didn’t want to see anyone or talk to anyone about it. “He didn’t want to see us. He didn’t want anyone to go with him to the doctors, and he also didn’t want us to be sad.” He didn’t mention what he was going through until the family got together for a serious talk. “He’s not the first one with cancer, and he’s not the last one with cancer,” said Camacho. “Now he can talk about it openly.” Sergio has had the necessary surgery, but afterward, doctors found the cancer had spread to his lungs. They are hoping chemotherapy can treat it, but it’s still too early to tell. Sergio is determined to fight, and very grateful for the help from his mom’s workplace. “Stella is very special to us,” said Karen Holgren, executive director of Cedarbrooke. “We want to do whatever we can for her.” The fundraiser takes place Friday at 6:30 p.m. There will be food, dancing and a live band. There will also be a 50/50 draw and a live auction. Tickets for the event are $20 and proceeds will help the family pay for Sergio’s medical needs. Tickets for the event are available at Cedarbrooke, located at 32331 Seventh Ave., or by calling 604-820-9300.

Old fashioned fair at McConnell Creek Hall Once again, McConnell Creek Farmers’ Hall is holding its oldfashioned Fall Fair, this year to be held Sept. 11. It seems early to announce this, but of course all of those wishing to display their crafts (woodwork, knitting, photography etc.), their canning, picking and baking must have time to create exhibits. Details of all the categories of exhibits and the days and hours of entry of items and fair opening may be found on the website: mcconnellcreek.com, or telephone Shirley at 604820-0620.
Prize ribbons will be awarded at the close of the fair, and donations of exhibits (flowers,
baking, canning vegetables and crafts) will be auctionned to the public.

THE MISSION RECORD – THURSDAY, AUGUST 5, 2010
OPINION
Published and printed by Black Press Ltd. at Mission at 33047 First Ave., V2V 1G2
Census data valuable
S
hortening our national census form, as the federal government has ordered Statistics Canada to do, is a misguided idea for various reasons. The notion that people’s privacy is being invaded by having to answer the more personal questions contained on the long form is a red herring. Yes, StatsCan can match answers to individuals and households. Unlike what conspiracy theorists might have us believe, however, the combined information would likely only be used in cases where public safety and security are threatened. Figures supplied by Statistics Canada showed that of 12 million census forms sent out in 2006, only 166 complaints and concerns were received. That’s a miniscule drop in the bucket for what is essentially the country’s broadest research project. It also shows that people aren’t too worried about potential leaks of their personal and household information. Making the act of answering the shorter version of the form – less personal questions – mandatory while asking people to voluntarily fill out the longer one is a strategy sure to backfire. Human nature dictates that if people are given the choice of whether to fill out a census form or not, most will either file it away with the rest of their non-crucial paperwork, or simply toss it in the recycling bin. For years the census has provided valuable information to federal and provincial government ministries for use in determining where to devote resources. So why mess with something that has been successful over such a small number of complaints – especially when the new directive won’t save any money? The feds need to do a better job of telling people why the information is valuable, and what gets done, or not done, with it. The majority of research experts have spoken against the change. It’s time for the feds to admit they’re wrong, save face while they still can and reverse this wrongheaded decision for the benefit of the country. – The Victoria News

Proposing election reform
The mountain pine beetle, even epidemics, are a natural part of the forest.
Editor, The Record; Here is a novel idea for you citizens of Mission: We elect 12 officials at large for the district and the school board combined. This way they have to win by popular vote on their own merits to obtain the position they want, because we let all the neighbours chose their positions at both the district and school board simply by popularity. This would be a very simple method. The one who has the most votes is the mayor. The one who has the second
most votes is the senior councillor, and/or deputy mayor. Then the next five most popular votes trickle down the line as councillors. The one who has the eighth highest votes is the school board chairman. The one next down the line is the deputy school board chairman, and the remaining three take their positions on the school board. Each one of these candidates that does manage to get elected has seniority in exactly that same order. I don’t care if council and the
school board are two different entities, they are all elected officials from one community. Get over it! It is time elected officials earn their stripes. Oh and one other thing. Do you know that on the District of Mission’s website there is a caption saying: “The mayor and councillors” under the photo, and there are eight bodies in the picture, then you go to the contact page it lists only seven including the mayor. Hmmmm. You do the math. Ron Wilkes, Mission
Benefits of beetle epidemics Reaching a point of no return Editor, The Record; I am pleased B.C. Minister of Forests Pat Bell is saying the beetle impact on our forests has been overstated. I agree, but my reasons may be different. The mountain pine beetle is a natural part of our lodgepole pine forests, no different than the wind and the rain. Lodgepole pine is a relatively short-lived tree species, and is typically re-established naturally following fire, wind storms, beetle epidemics, and logging. Q Large mountain pine beetle epidemics re-occur about every 40 years. In BC, epidemics re-occurred in the 1890s, 1930s, 1980s and recently. Q When we see all those red and dying pine trees we typically overreact. Ground observation is always needed to verify what is happening because human eyes are more sensitive to the red part of the light spectrum, than the
green. Q In mixed species forests (about 75 per cent of the pine forests), the mountain pine beetle dramatically increases the rate of forest succession, and growth of remaining live trees. This is a very good thing for maintaining mid-term timber supply, in (say) 15 to 50 years. The key to reducing vulnerability of lodgepole pine and increasing its resilience to mountain pine beetles, is to maintain diversity in tree species, size, age, and condition, through skilled partial cutting. Large-scale clear-cutting of mixed-species stands, and replacement with uniform young pine, is counterproductive. I would like to see a post-beetle epidemic assessment keeping these forest policy, science, and management principles in mind. Ray Travers, R.P.F. Victoria
Editor, The Record; Many people hardly able to kill a fly, are yet partners in killing thousands of wild birds and animals, as well as enabling the destruction of huge plots of grazing lands which sustain countless of ecosystems in a vast connecting chain of food sources. Why? Is it a lack of education? A lack of intelligence? A lack of attention to what is going on, promoted by huge sports spectacles and other events like the Olympics, by those who have other motives? It is painful to read of so many creatures, on land, water and in the air, becoming extinct on a yearly basis because their food chain has been destroyed by us. What must the distress be of various birds and animals which
migrate from north to south, to find that when they return here to raise their young, there is a sprawling subdivision on former green spaces? Yes, we must all take some responsibility for those thousands of deaths, as in any circumstance when we stand by while someone is killed. Yet we tend to feel superior because we have legally abolished the death sentence for those who commit heinous crimes. What of our crimes on such a massive scale? We allow formerly ALR (Agricultural Land Reserve) designated lands to be removed from protection so they can be used for other purposes. We destroy natural grazing pastures to be rigorously cultivated for production of grains to fatten our
table beef, yet cattle normally eat pasture grass, not grains. Anyone remember the lyrics of that old song “Home on the Range?” Now “range” is considered a verb to indicate movement in an enclosed area, not the rangelands of the past. The examples go on and on to a very distressing degree, and will especially impact the younger people of today. We must all do what is necessary to stop the destruction of those things which sustain life for all living beings, and especially pressure government representatives to be more proactive for the public good. We are, in fact, on the point of no return, and there is not one minute to lose. Lila Rauh, Mission
Book shows perils in our multi-cultural policies Editor, The Record; If you only read one book this year, make it Nomad by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Her story is a flight from the tribalism of her family’s Muslim faith in Somalia and an arranged marriage, to her discovery of the principles of the European age of enlightenment, which she says we need to defend against radical Islam. She sees our own system of multiculturalism as being self defeating. She has brought a lot of clarity to me about things in our society that I have felt uncomfortable with, and it now forces me to modify some of my own beliefs in some cherished ideals. Before the bleeding hearts have a coronary and the right-wing Christian groups go hallelujah and pass me the collection plate, I still support our multi-cultural society. But
I now question the benefit to the country in allowing cultural diversity to fragment our society. Ms. Ali pointed out an uncomfortable truism: “all people are equal, but all cultures and religions are not.” The road to hell for our liberal democracy and traditions of the enlightenment is paved with the most sincere good intentions. To quote from her book, “social workers in the West will tell you that immigrants need to maintain group cohesion for their mental health, because otherwise they will be confused and their self-esteem destroyed.” What sounds logical isn’t true. She calls it a kind of ‘romantic primitivism’ and an anthropologist from Australia calls it ‘designer tribalism.’ We practise a type of reverse
racism: “…where all ‘non-Western’ cultures are automatically assumed to live in harmony with animals and plants according to the deeper dictates of humanity and to practice an elemental spirituality.” Sounds like the same romanticized twaddle being marketed by supporters of self-government for our natives, I might add. Writing from her own experiences, she is calling on us to defend our liberal democracies from radical Islam and stop blindly stumbling into the same problems plaguing much of Europe, where democracy and free expression is being held prisoner to self-censorship out of a misguided sense of political correctness and a fear of offending. Our very fear of offending lest we be called racist or worse is what is fuelling radical Islam because
we undercut the moderate followers of Islam that we should be supporting in their faith. By reading her book, I’m a better liberal than I was before because now I’m more convinced than ever that a true liberal who believes in equality does not allow for bigotry in the name of any religion. Honour killings that the bleeding hearts want to keep calling simple domestic violence so as not to offend Muslim – or Sikh – sensibilities cannot be excused because of culture or tradition. And
so on. I’ll always support our diverse cultures as equal in a secular society under one law. But we also have to stop being held prisoners to self-censorship by saying, as clearly as Ali has done, that the Western culture is better. We must change some aspects of multi-culturalism to break down the walls dividing us. We must stop treating all newcomers to this country as `victims` that need to stay in their own cultural groups, and encourage integration into the mainstream of society.

Development on Stave Lake Street pitched to council Mission council is considering the merit of a proposed development the includes 31 residential lots and a fenced wetland area near Westminster Abbey, being pursued by McKenzie Properties.
The subdivision would be on Stave Lake Street, bordered by Araki Court in the north. With the plan, Cherry would be extended Eastward and become a cul de sac. About 70 per cent of the
lots would be 558 square metres in size, and 30 per cent would be 465 square metres. The municipal staff report to council notes that the developer has worked with staff over
the past year to develop a site plan that respects the natural grade of the site and protects the environmentally sensitive wetland area. The park would be 12,400 square meters in size.

A neighbour of the proposed development voiced objection to the creation of a dedicated wetland, saying it was created by many years of drainage from a leaking water reservoir, and is not a natural wetland. He said if the leak were repaired the site will be dry. A representative of Scott Resources, which conducted an assessment of the property, said it is a wetland based on its condition today and the plant species that are there. Councillors asked to review the Scott Resources report.

Chamber to honour excellence in business
• Complete Family Care • Senior Care • Cosmetic Dentistry • Orthodontics • Invisalign • Dental Implants • Tooth Whitening
Taking nominations of deserving entrepreneurs The Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce will be honouring excellence in business at a semi-formal event on Oct. 22. Presented by Pete’s Place, this event will be held in the ballroom of Rockwell’s Bar and Grill, located in the Best Western. In order for this prestigious event to take place, the community members must nominate businesses they feel are deserving of recognition for their outstanding achievements over the past year. “These are the trailblazers of our business community” said chamber president Helen Secco. “They deserve dedicated acknowledgment for their innovations and contributions to the local, regional, and even international business community.” The award recipients will represent the top executives, business leaders, thinkers, and strategists in our community. Their superior efforts encourage the sense that Mission supports, engages, and produces world class talent, innovative products and dynamic companies, she added. Businesses can be nominated in the following categories: Q Business of the Year (15-plus employees) This prestigious award is given to the organization that best exhibits excellence in business. The business will have a strong history in the community, continued growth and innovative strategies, as well as market leadership in its sector. Criteria will include strategy, future growth plans, employee relations and local community involvement and contributions. Q Business of the Year (1-15 employees) This prestigious award is given to the organization that best exhibits excellence in small business. The business will have contributed to the growth of the community through their products, services, and customer service. Nominations will be judged on the benefit brought to the community from this business. Q Business Leader of the Year This award recognizes and honors the individual business person that has been a leader in moving the District of Mission forward and has been responsible for improvements to the community. Selection criteria include demonstrating entrepreneurial spirit, quality workmanship, professional mannerism and exemplary customer service to the
fellow business members and to the community. Q Customer Experience Award Celebrating the best in customer service, customer retention, and customer relationship management. The award will go to the company that can demonstrate that it is truly “customer-focused.” Q Eco Star Award Recognizing a business that displays environmental responsibility, encourages the sustainable use of renewable resources and/or the protection of environmentally sensitive areas. Q Entrepreneurial Excellence Award Recognizing a business that shows achievement in some or all of the following: new or innovative products or service, or manufacturing technique, job creation, growth potential and/or market served. Q Non-Profit of the Year Award This award recognizes the organization making a significant difference in our local community in terms of fundraising and the number of local people affected. Criteria include collaboration with other community organizations and strategies to implement creative solutions to community challenges. Annual reports will be requested. Q Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award Celebrating an entrepreneur under the age of 35. The nominees will be judged on their company’s success and growth potential, innovation, participation in new economic activities and community involvement. Nominating a business is easy – simply indicate the business and the relevant award on the nomination form and provide a short synopsis of why you consider them worthy of the award. An impartial judging committee will review the submissions and determine the winners for each category. Nominations forms are available by contacting the Chamber of Commerce at 604-826-6914 or visiting the Chamber’s website at www.missionchamber.bc.ca.

Stop invasive plants replacing important natural habitat. The policeman’s helmet is one of the easier plants to control, if you pull at the base of the plant (they are surface rooters) they will come out easily. The plants must be pulled before the seeds mature because this plant will shoot its seeds up to 20 feet. Bag the plants, do not compost. Mission’s Wetland Patrol asks that the public not transplant any wild plants from outside the region and remove all policeman’s helmet before it has a chance to spread.
Manage your grass clippings Many people assume organic matter, such as grass clippings, does not pose an environmental hazard, but grass is high in nitrogen and can negatively affect water quality, and consequently fish habitat. Seemingly insignificant ditches often discharge into storm sewers, which feed fish-bearing streams, so grass clippings should never be dumped near surface waters or in greenbelts and parks, where they can create odour nuisances. By far the best way to deal with grass clippings is to leave them on the lawn. It does not take a special mower to practice “grasscycling”, but simply a proper cover on the bagger outlet. Most lawnmowers
come with both a bagger and a cover. If you do not want to leave your grass clippings on the lawn, please note that the curbside collection system includes the collection of yard waste, including grass clippings and other small yard debris. The most economical way to set out yard waste is to place it loosely in 80-L bins featuring an orange sticker. Placing some crumpled up newspaper at the bottom of the bin helps to soak up liquids and prevents the grass from sticking. Place as many bins as necessary, as long as they don’t exceed 20 kg in weight each. Orange stickers are available at City Hall and the Leisure Centre free of charge.

Sprinkling banned through August Water consumption almost doubles during the hot summer period when extra water is used for watering lawns. The requirement for the water supply system to supply a maximum water demand for only a short time does not warrant the required considerable additional expense. Our water supply system is currently stretched to the limit. As a result, lawn sprinkling is banned for July and August in 2010. The Mission Twins were having a great provincial championship, and then a tough schedule caught up to them – they ran into the two teams that would ultimately play in the championship game. The Twins hosted the B.C. Minor Baseball Bantam Single A championship tournament over the weekend at the Mission Sports Park. They got off to a great start with two wins: 6-1 over the Ladner Red Sox on Thursday, and 4-3 over the Vancouver Mounties on Friday morning. Against Ladner, Alex Boulay and Bryce Fillion had good games at the plate, each with a hit, a walk and two runs scored. Pitchers Jesse McGowan and Victor Redekop held the Sox bats in check. In game three on Friday afternoon they took on the tough Campbell River Tyee. They took a 6-4 lead into the fourth inning, but then the Mission defence botched some routine plays, resulting in some big innings for the Tyee and ultimately a 16-9 loss. Brett Hurley doubled off the fence, had two hits, and scored two runs in the game. He also gutted it out on the mound for 75 pitches, while the defence behind him unravelled. Saturday afternoon the Twins had to win their fourth
and final round-robin game to advance to the semis, but they came up against the eventual tournament champions, the Aldergrove Twins. Aldergrove was aggressive on the base paths and played mistake-free ball in the field en route to a 12-1 victory. “It was a tough way to go out, but the boys worked hard,” said coach Rick Hein. “They came to play every day, and that’s all we could ask of them.” Manager Rick Hurley said Mission did well, considering they had a small roster that left them a little short of hardball’s most precious commodity – pitching. “The big thing is the improvement in the boys,” said Hurley. “It’s an intense fourweek season that you’re either playing or practicing all the time. “They’ll take this experience into next year.” There was a skills competition at the 10-team tournament, and the highlight for Mission was taking second in the base running event. Nolan Hein, Bryce Fillion, Brett Hurley and Victor Redekop were the Mission speedsters. Aldergrove’s only blemish of the tournament was an 8-5 loss against Campbell River in round-robin play, but Aldergrove took revenge when the two met in the championship game, with a 9-1 beat-down.

A painful safety lesson I
am back from my from my short vacation, with some lessons learned. Safety is number one. While some of us teach water safety, general safety is often taken for granted. My lesson was administered as it often is, through experience when I slipped on a wet step coming out of my father’s motor home. Landing flat on my back, on those steps, kept me from fishing for the first four days. Je Traveling was a challenge too. Fortunately I stay in shape and maintain good back health, which helped in keeping a painful circumstance from being a catastrophe. The fishing was good when we could finally get to it; more on
that next week. The moral for this week’s column: stay safe and stay in shape for good fishing.

Johnny Reid has been enjoying his roller coaster ride to success, especially since the track is still going up. The Scottish-born Canadian, who now works out of Nashville, has put together a string of hits and is hopeful his newest album – A Place Called Love which will be released at the end of August – will continue the trend of success. Reid will be bringing his talents to the Fraser Valley when he performs at Mission’s Rockin River MusicFest 2010. The two-day (Aug. 13-14) show features Crystal Shawanda as the headliner on Friday night and Reid taking centre stage on Saturday. “I’m looking forward to coming back to B.C.,” said Reid who believe’s B.C. audiences are more liberal than some urban Toronto crowds.
“You like to have more fun.” The country, soul singer says he can usually tell, by the first song, what kind of audience he is performing for. “You have to give the audience what it wants,” he explained, adding he often changes the order of his set to suit the crowd. Having been in the business for more than a dozen years, and played for crowds as big as 100,000 and as few as two, Reid says there is “still an anxious anticipation” before stepping on stage. Reid plans to perform some of his big hits including the newest single Today I’m Gonna Try to Change the World. The song was inspired by his son after Reid said that phrase to him. “I sat down and thought what could I do, on an everyday basis to make a difference. Say hello to my neighbour and shake hands with a stranger.” That thought became the lyrics to
his song, one that has received praise from fans and critics alike. It even seemed to touch royalty. Earlier this year, Reid was performing before a crowd of 130,000 on Parliament Hill. The crowd include Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. After the show she greeted and shook hands with the guests and celebrities. “When she got to me, she leaned forward and said ‘I enjoyed your song very much.’ That was pretty great.” Having come to Canada when he was 15, Reid experienced a big culture shock, however it was even more of a shock when he went to Nashville. ‘I never saw myself in Nashville.” But a job offer from Dreamwork Music was to lucrative to give up. It didn’t take long for Reid to get comfortable in the home of country music. “A lot of people there were walk-
ing the same road as me.” He said being introduced as a singer/song writer in Nashville is no big deal. However, in Canada it’s a different story. “You get introduced that way in Toronto and people say ‘Yes, but what’s his real job?’” For those who have never seen Reid perform live, he plans to give them something to remember. “Every show is full of heart and soul, I pour it all out. It’s the music and the story telling. It’s the soul and the country – it’s me.” Rockin River Musicfest 2010 takes place Aug. 13-14 at Mission Raceway Park. Along with Reid’s performance on Saturday, rising country sensation Crystal Shawanda will headline the Friday night show. Other performers at the festival include The Higgins, Aaron Pritchett, Jessie Farrell, Kenny Hess, Karen Lee Batten and many more. Tickets and information are available at www.rockinriver.com.

The Grand Bounce, with his backing band The Country of Miracles. In his latest album, Downie has shed the need to prove himself more than a rock star artistically and has stripped away the clutter, arriving at a clear, evocative sound with songs that range from the poignant Yellow Skies to the challenging Hard Canadian. Tickets for the show are now
up in Beaumont, Texas in the 1950s his local deejay was The Big Bopper (JP Richardson) and he would go out to local clubs and, if they would let him, he could jump on the stage to play with the likes of BB King. From the ’50s to the present day, the life of Winter has been an integral part of the international blues scene, and he is one of the real influential links between southern American blues and the English blues/rock explosion of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. From the moment he released his debut self-titled album on Columbia records in 1969
Winter became a musicians’ musician, a huge star and a rock god who set the standard of excellence for live shows. He made it through the rock god phase, which included a fight with heroin addiction. Unlike many from that era, he kicked the habit and lived to tell the story. In his career Winter has released 26 ‘official’ albums, the last two, The Woodstock Experience and The Johnny Winter Anthology were both released in 2009. One of Winter’s great ambitions was to play with the blues icon Muddy Waters. When he
finally got his chance he did even better and ended up producing and playing on two albums with, and for, Muddy Waters, Hard Again and I’m Ready, both of which won Grammy awards and gave. Waters the best financial success of his career. David Gogo is from Nanaimo and he released his first of nine solo albums in 1994. He was named musician of the year at the Western Canadian Music Awards and guitarist of the year at the Maple Blues Awards. Tickets for the show are $45.50 at all Ticketmaster outlets. THE MISSION RECORD – THURSDAY, AUGUST 5, 2010
Blackthorn returns to Fraser River Heritage Park for Twilight concert The Envision Twilight Concert Series welcomes Blackthorn back to Fraser River Heritage Park on Friday, Aug. 6 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Blackthorn is a Vancouver-based Celtic folk group whose repertoire celebrates the traditional music of Ireland and Scotland as well as folk music of English and French Canada. The group formed in 1988 playing in local coffee houses and bars, and expanding their horizons since then to include large-scale concerts, festivals, conventions, weddings, parties and private functions throughout western Canada and parts of the U.S. The current lineup includes Rosie Carver on violin, Michelle Carlisle on flute, Michael Viens on guitar and bodhran, and Tim Renaud on bass. From lively jigs and reels to heart-wrenching airs and ballads, savour the melodies and intricately woven harmonies that bring this music to life in a new way, mixed with humour and above all else, fun. Blackthorn’s performance is sponsored by Boston Pizza. The Envision Twilight Art in the Park program features Elsie Chatwin’s hand painted crafts on glass. The Envision Twilight Concert Series proudly presents Shari Ulrich on Wednesday, Aug. 11 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. A Juno award winner and B.C. Entertainment Hall of Fame inductee, Shari Ulrich has been an unflagging fixture in Canadian music since t h e early Shari Ulrich 1970s. She was first heard in the quirky and eternally orange Pied Pumkin playing fiddle, mandolin, dulcimer, flute and saxophone. Her defection to the Hometown Band and a high profile launch to national recognition led to her solo career as a singer songwriter. Her recent release of Find Our Way is her seventh solo album, and her 19th including her work with Pied Pumkin, UHF, and her recent collaboration with Barney Bentall and Tom Taylor. Her live
songwriting education, theatre, and producing the Bluebird North song writers series. Ulrich’s performance is sponsored by Envision Financial. As a special thanks to the community, Envision Financial is providing free sweet, hot, buttered corn to the first 500 concert patrons. The Envision Twilight Art in the Park program features Nancy Arcand specializing in Aboriginal art, and the pressed flower art of Lori Friskie. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and come to the park. The Log Cabin Café and the Blackberry Kitchen are open for business before and during the concert. Admission is free but donations are appreciated and encouraged. Your support along with the generous contributions of sponsors will ensure that this series continues. For more information please call the Fraser River Heritage Park at 604826-0277.

shows in the past five years, as well as her new CD, have been enhanced by the contribution of her daughter Julia Graff on violin and vocals, which

What’s Happening in Mission
DON’T LET YOUR TALENTS RUST Most of us have a particular talent for something. Some of us are creative, while some are good with people, and others may have a talent for mechanical things. Whatever our talents may be– most of us do have more than one–it is important for each of us to develop them to their fullest. One of the saddest of missed opportunities is not fully developing our talents because we may miss out on a more fulfilled life. The American poet and abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier wrote, “For of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these: ‘It might have been!’” Although our talents may be modest, rest assured that we are all good at something, even if we are not sure exactly where our talents lie. Psychologists have developed aptitude tests to an exact science, and it is easy enough to find out what we are good at if we don’t already know. We should all do some thinking about what we are good at, or perhaps take a test, then develop a plan for putting our talents to good use. Every one to whom much is given, of him will much be required. R.S.V. Luke 12:48

Burning garbage has been OK’d by Metro Vancouver. Regional directors voted Friday to adopt a draft waste plan that includes incineration, within or outside the Vancouver area. Incineration has been a bone of contention for Fraser Valley residents and politicians who say it will damage the sensitive airshed. Metro chair and Delta Mayor Lois Jackson said the plan was “collaboration of many many years work. Not only people from around this table, but also from the past, are going to be interested in how we deal with this today.” Abbotsford Coun. Patricia Ross said after the meeting she was disheartened. “This is SE2 all over again,” she said. “This (decision) just leaves us hanging.” Her best hope was Vancouver which was opposed the idea of incineration altogether. Vancouver’s Heather Deal attempted to have incineration removed from the possible treatments of waste, and offered an amendment that the definition of waste to energy include all conversion methods including gasification, but excluding incineration and landfilling. “We don’t believe in adding more landfills,” Deal said. Richmond’s Harold Steves agreed, saying there’s no need for an incinerator at this point. “Get the mass burn off the table, we’ll have alternatives within 18 months,” Steves said. Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts said there’s a huge host of emerging technologies available that out-of-region communities might want to host. The document now goes to environment minister Barry Penner. He could approve the plan as presented by Metro without changes, make changes himself and then approve the amended plan or flag deficiencies in the plan and send it back for Metro to amend and resubmit.
