Ferndale expanding Fifty more beds are being added to the federal institution Mission’s Ferndale Institution is getting another 50 beds as part of a $77.5-million prison expansion funding package for the Fraser Valley. Federal Minister of Public Safety Vic Toews made the announcement Monday at a press conference in the Pacific Institution gymnasium, with several local politicians, including Mayor James Atebe, in attendance. As well, there will be a 96-bed living unit at Matsqui Institution, a second 96-bed unit at Pacific Institution and 24 new spaces at Fraser Valley

Police searching for missing Mission man BY CAROL AUN Mission Record
Hope Bowe is worried her grandson is in trouble. Twenty-one-year-old Josh Bowe has been missing for nearly two weeks and Hope says it’s unusual for him to disappear without checking in. “He’s not the kind of child to run away,” said Hope. “If he goes somewhere, he has a destination.” Josh has trouble with his short-term memory and is on disability. The last time Hope saw her grandson was on his birthday, Nov. 12. He usually visits her every week, and she became worried when she didn’t hear from him the next week. Josh lives in Silverdale but was last seen in
Deroche, said Arlene Fredeen, Josh’s guardian since he was 11 years old. He’s now under the care of the Community Living program and has a suite above Fredeen’s shop. Josh made his way to Deroche Nov. 18 on foot to visit a friend, said Fredeen. He was seen the next day by his community living worker, who drove him back to his friend’s house. According to this friend, said Fredeen, Josh went to the store and never returned. It’s not unusual for Josh to walk from Silverdale to Deroche; it’s something he’s done for the last two or three years. He walks everywhere, said Fredeen, noting Josh is in excellent shape and covers a lot of ground on just his two feet. However, she is worried because Josh is known to walk the train tracks in the area. Fredeen says everything is in place at Josh’s
home and there are no signs that he returned. “He has a lot of friends, but nobody has seen him,” said Hope, who waited a few days to file a missing person report because she was still hopeful he would show up. “Something I never wanted to do was accept the fact that he’s missing.” “He’s in trouble out there somewhere,” added Fredeen, who has had flyers made up and posted around town. Bowe is Caucasian, about 6’0” tall and very thin. He has brown eyes, long, bushy auburn hair and wears glasses. He was likely wearing a dark winter jacket with hi-top army style boots and dark-coloured pants. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Mission RCMP at 604-826-7161. If you want to remain anonymous, please call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

THE MISSION RECORD – THURSDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2010
Police seek armed robbers Mission Mounties are working with Abbotsford Police to determine whether armed robberies that occurred in the two communities are related. Last week police in Abbotsford arrested three youths and two adults in relation to a gas station robbery in that community. On Nov. 24, J’s Pizza Place near the intersection of Wren Street and Lougheed Highway was also held up around 8:45 p.m. The suspects demanded cash from the till and fled the scene.
Nobody was injured. In both cases, there were four masked suspects. Investigators are endeavouring to determine if both robberies were committed by the same group, said Mission RCMP Cpl. Raina Siou. Mission RCMP are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crime at J’s Pizza to call them at 604-826-7161 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Tipsters can e-mail secured information through the website www.solvecrime.ca.

Institution. They are all located at the Abbotsford site. Combined with a 96-bed unit at Kent Maximum Security and a 50-bed living unit at Mission’s Ferndale Institution, the government is investing an additional $77.5 million in prison expansion
in the Fraser Valley. Toews referred to Bill C-25, the Truth in Sentencing Act, which put an end to prisoners receiving two-for-one credit for days they spend incarcerated in remand prior to their criminal trials. “Convicted terrorists have gone free on the day of their sentencing (prior to C-25),” said Toews. The local initiative is part of
a cross-Canada investment in the prison system of $2 billion over five years. Responding to a media query whether $2 billion could be better spent keeping people out of prisons, Toews said the government has “any number of programs” to do that, and does look at electronic monitoring where appropriate. But he added “the safety of Canadians comes first.”

Dalton considers premier job Black Press
Embattled Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Marc Dalton is thinking about running for premier. “It’s something I’m seriously considering. It’s a big commitment even to run, so I’m just evaluating options and will have to come to a conclusion sometime soon,” he said last Wednesday. Dalton said he’s been thinking about running for leadership of the Liberal party, as he says most MLAs have, since Nov. 3, when Premier Gordon Campbell announced he was stepping down. “At this point, I’m still evaluating what type of reach I might
have to make a credible run.” However, the MLA, serving only since 2009, didn’t want to explain what might qualify him to Dalton seek the office. Neither would he say if it was prompted by the Fight HST campaign, which has targeted him for recall in March. That all would be explained if he decided to make the run, he said. “There are many, many things involved,” said Dalton, including the effect on his family. Liberals will choose a new leader on Feb. 28, with Campbell holding office until then.

Dalton, with only a 68-vote margin over the NDP’s Mike Bocking in the May 2009 election, is sixth on the list of 18 MLAs that Fight HST wants to remove through recall petition because of their support of the Harmonized Sales Tax. Dalton said he’s had a variety of input from colleagues, some encouraging him and some being cautious. Recall organizer Corisa Nicole Bell agreed that Dalton could be using the contest to raise his profile so he could withstand a recall campaign next year. “Yes, I wouldn’t doubt it. He’s got to figure something out. I don’t believe the Liberal party would award him with that position.”

Signs needed in Ferndale area to warn motorists about horses BY CAROL AUN Mission Record
A local woman is lobbying the district to erect signs reminding motorists and residents the Ferndale area is used by horses and riders. Laurie Sherman is making that request after a horse she boarded\ on her property near the Mission Horse Club was fatally struck by a truck on Stave Lake Street two weeks ago. Two women were riding together when one of the horses bucked, threw off the rider and ran into the street where he collided with a large SUV. The horse had a broken leg and severe head and internal
injuries and the vehicle was destroyed. The driver was shaken but not physically hurt, and the thrown rider was traumatized, but otherwise uninjured. The rider tried to calm her injured horse while the other woman soothed her own and called for help. Police kept the area clear but the horse died of his injuries before the veterinarian arrived. Sherman grew up with horses and has lived on Stave Lake and Ferndale for 10 years. She told The Record most people are respectful when they see her riding her horse but there are a few who continue to rocket past. The posted speed limit is 50
km/h but few adhere. “This is a wake up call,” she said. “Something like this could happen again.” Horses weigh 1,000 pounds and when they’re spooked, they can jump sideways and act unpredictably, Sherman explained. Drivers need to slow down and give the horse and rider some room on the road when possible, said Sherman. Cautionary signs reminding motorists horses are also on the road can help, she asserts. “Maple Ridge is a horse community and has signs everywhere warning the public to expect horses on roads. I see no reason why Mission cannot do the same.”

THE MISSION RECORD – THURSDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2010
Drivers told to reduce speed in work zones Despite snow cascading down on the Highway 7 road construction site, more than 30 people came out for traffic control person (TCP) safety last Thursday. An eight foot by eight foot sign — one of several being posted along the bridge construction zone — was unveiled which features a life-size photo of TCP Jolene James and her four-yearold niece Ella. The sign says, “Please slow down my aunt works here.” Last month, just three days before her 22nd birthday, Jolene just missed being hit by a car that failed to obey her stop sign. Injury rates for flaggers are more than double the provincial average, according to WorkSafeBC stats. The Slow Down campaign featuring real workers and their families has been around BC since 2007. To date, more than 55 people representing a variety of jobs associated with road work have volunteered to take part.
MAC takes over project BY CAROL AUN Mission Record
The Mission Arts Council (MAC) has revived the photo mural project proposed for the Leisure Centre. MAC executive director Nancy Arcand picked up the phone to offer help as soon as she heard early last week the donations were to be returned and the project cancelled. MAC has held the funding in trust since April and now it is an arts council project. Arcand says she has the support of the mural committee, including project leader Eric LeBlanc. “I didn’t feel it should disappear,” she said. “Let’s work through the proper channels. It’s something that needs to go through.”
The arts council will be sending letters out to the donors to inform them MAC is taking over the project and working with the district. “We will hold the money in trust, but if they want their money back, we will give it to them,” said Arcand. MAC will be identifying potential buildings for the mural and will be relying on mural committee members for project history. Having the arts centre involved makes sense because it’s public art, said Arcand. The mural of historical photos was originally slated for the east side of the former Home Hardware building on First Avenue, but a new location had to be selected when the building went up for sale.

THE MISSION RECORD – THURSDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2010
OPINION
Published and printed by Black Press Ltd. at Mission at 33047 First Ave., V2V 1G2
Dalton who? Local MLA Marc Dalton is considering a run for the leadership of the B.C. Liberal Party. Dalton, a rookie politician who previously failed as a federal Conservative candidate in 2006 and as a candidate nominee in 2004, only beat out his NDP opponent in the last provincial election by 68 votes. He is sixth on the anti-HST campaign’s recall list of the most vulnerable Liberal MLAs. Since being elected in May 2009, Dalton, a former school teacher, has served as a backbencher. He has never been appointed a cabinet position, despite several shake-ups in the past few years. He has not put forward any meaningful legislation. He hasn’t been a strong voice on any issue, even education. He has simply reiterated the party line like a good puppet, and cut a few ribbons. His most successful move came during the provincial election, when he escaped criticism of antigay remarks made in a decade-old email and was not dumped by his party. So why is he running for premier? Because he’s Métis and speaks French? He was in the Canadian Armed Forces reserves and did volunteer work with the Salvation Army. We have to guess because Dalton won’t even say why he’s thinking about this, which says a lot. He is not qualified to lead the province, let alone his own party. This move, testing the public waters, is nothing more than a ploy to settle the waves of a potential recall campaign in his riding, Maple Ridge-Mission. It is nothing more than desperation from someone trying to save his job, a deckhand on a sinking ship. He should go back to teaching. - Maple Ridge News

How Campbell was toppled A
hatchet job. Sloppy. That was the initial reaction from Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett to my column last week on his noisy departure from the B.C. Liberal cabinet. Reviewing those events with Bennett and other sources, I realize I not only made a factual error, I missed a significant story about the end of Gordon Campbell’s leadership. Why did Bennett publicly break with Campbell, first to criticize his sweeping reorganization of resource ministries, and then to call for Campbell to go? Was he upset about losing responsibility for mining? Was this another hot-tempered lapse in judgment, like his insulting e-mail to a local critic that prompted Bennett to resign as minister of state for mining in 2007? No. It was a calmly calculated rebellion, a solo effort to push Campbell out before it was too late for the B.C. Liberal Party. I called Bennett a “political suicide bomber.” He prefers “change agent.” Step one was a carefully timed call to Vancouver Sun reporter Jonathan Fowlie to

Bennett said the intermediary was told some MLAs were prepared to sit as independents when the house resumes in February if Campbell was still premier. When Campbell announced he was stepping down, he gave no date. Bennett says he and other fed-up MLAs became concerned that Campbell might stay until the HST vote next fall, or longer. The party has since scrambled to reschedule its convention, change its voting structure to give rural areas a chance (Bennett says that too was his initiative, last July) and select a new leader on Feb. 26. Mission accomplished. • Correction: I wrote last week that Bennett prematurely disclosed a revenue sharing offer for the Prosperity mine. YOUR VIEWS Parents need to stand up Editor, The Record: Re: Durieu, Deroche schools may close, Nov. 18 edition. Superintendent Frank Dunham believes we have to invest in professional staff sooner rather than later, yet with the current teachers and staff he fails to provide the tools and resources necessary to teach. The teachers have to photocopy textbooks because students don’t have them. Resource books are outdated. Student counsellors have been cut. Kids that had extra support last year are no longer getting it. Educational assistants have been laid off. The students are struggling to learn reading, writing and basic mathematical skills. PACs struggle to raise funds to help provide the kids with necessities. They have to look for money through grants, fundraising, and parents who are tapped out — things that should be provided by school boards. Budget reductions and cuts to school programs, staffing, resources, etc. is not supporting the students’ futures. The cuts approved by the school district and board of trustees need to stop and they need to concentrate on the wasted spending perks that are enjoyed by management and administration. Meanwhile, getting the students trained for middle school at Mission secondary has the students segregated to half the school. They are allowed to go to the cafeteria for food, then leave immediately to go back to a designated
area to eat on the hallway floors like animals. They have four lunch hour supervisors for approximately 1,000 students so I feel kids’ safety is at risk. The board of trustees have failed to keep administration in check with spending and bad decision-making. Now, once again, they are talking about closing two more schools due to enrolment. The supposed decline is on the east side of Mission and growth is to be on the west. So why was Fraserview elementary closed? They say they strive to sustain and enhance quality education, yet cut programs in schools and are considering closing two more schools. Yet again, we will probably face more cutbacks, less support from the board and we will be worse off next year than we are now. They must start thinking of these kids like they are their own and not numbers or strangers. Shame on all of you at the board who have forgotten this. Everyone has a voice. All parents and students must speak up now before it’s too late. The education our children are receiving is worse than when we went to school. Isn’t it supposed to be getting better? Parents, I beg you to speak up now. Go to the board meetings. Fight for what your kids deserve and need before it’s too late. Ginny Melo Isbister Mission

Bennett attack unfair Editor, The Record: Re: He’s not the real Bill Bennett (B.C. Views, Nov. 25). Tom Fletcher’s hatchet job on Independent MLA Bill Bennett has no basis in reality. Bennett won not with a “slim margin but with a 51 per cent margin, higher than some candidates in the Fraser Valley, plus he defeated the leader of the B.C. Conservative Party. And before he reluctantly took this job on 10 years ago, this was a solid NDP riding. Bennett has always had the courage of his convictions and this latest speaking out is what we expect from him. We agree with our MLA that Premier Gordon Campbell has done many good things for B.C., but he’s stayed too long and was jeopardizing the survival of the B.C. Liberal Party. As for Bennett’s comments about Mr. Campbell’s style of leadership, we support our MLA’s right to say publicly what he has learned to be the truth. The fact his colleagues are silent is more of a reflection on them than on Bill Bennett. Jim Fennell Past President Kootenay East B.C. Liberal Constituency Association

With 460 families already registered with the Christmas Bureau, coordinator Phil Hope believes there will be a record number of people needing help this year. We are well on our way to the 700 mark, he said. “Our biggest need now is financial donations.” The Christmas Bureau needs to raise $85,000 to meet the demand, and Hope adds tax receipts are available. “We’re currently at 15 per cent.” The bureau also accepts donations of non-perishable foods and new toys. There are a number of
events taking place over the next few weeks to help the donation drive, starting with the Candlelight Parade this Friday. Volunteers will be aboard two tractor-trailers from Prospect Equipment collecting money and other donations. The annual Firemen Runs take place on Dec. 8 and Dec. 9. Firefighters from halls one and three will be riding through neighbourhoods to help raise funds. Firehall one volunteers will be collecting donations from Cherry Avenue to Tunbridge and both sides of Cedar Street. Firehall three volunteers will be running through the two trailer parks in Ruskin beginning at 6 p.m. On Dec. 9, firehall one volunteers will be back on the trucks,
this time patrolling the area from Cherry Avenue, Best Avenue and down to 12 Avenue between Cade Barr and Stave Lake streets. The West Coast Express Santa Train will be running Dec. 11 and Dec. 18. Ride the train for free when you bring a new gift or toy donation. The train leaves the station at 10 a.m. Parking on these days is free at the West Coast Express parking area on the south side of the train tracks. If you’ve missed these opportunities to help the Christmas Bureau help those in need, you can bring your donations to the office at 32646 Logan Ave. from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday. For more information call 604-814-3333.

THE MISSION RECORD – THURSDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2010
Community spirit is key to concert’s success On Wednesday, Dec. 15, the Clarke Theatre will be filled to capacity, as people enjoy the 11th annual Christmas At The Clarke Benefit Concert. What began in 2000 as a quick idea to raise a little money for the Christmas Bureau and Transition House has grown into a successful annual event that has become a Christmas tradition. There will be carolling outside the building as people arrive and this year’s show will be as good as ever, providing a variety of music appealing to just about everyone. The ever-popular Abbotsford Concert Band will be here for the first time as will choirs from Mission and Heritage Park secondary schools, three great young singers, Stephanie Spence, Victoria Dudfield and Brook Harris from the Abbotsfordbased vocal group Valley Voices will be there, as will Mission’s community choir, Joy Vox. The Gospel Connection will be performing that evening and Rob Hess will be closing the show this year, entertaining the audience with that incredible voice that has made him a crowd favourite wherever he goes. “The keys to our success are two-fold,” said John Agnew, the show’s founder and producer. “In terms of the show itself, we provide the audience with what has been called the best show if its kind to come to the community all year. Every year people tell me how much they enjoy the show and that they are looking forward to next year already. The entertainers tell me they consider it an honour to be invited, donating their time when they come here to perform. More importantly, our financial success can be attributed to the attitudes, generosity and kindness of everyone involved.” That goes further than just the entertainers, Agnew adds. When the management at the Clarke Theatre saw that everyone was donating their time to put this benefit on, they decided they would become a major sponsor as well and donate the use of the theatre for the evening, along with the sound and lighting technicians. What began as a wild notion in December 2000 has now raised well over
$100,000 for the two organizations. That pattern of kindness got started when Agnew approached his friend Kenny Hess, one of Canada’s finest country singers and songwriters, with an idea to put on a benefit concert only 19 days later. Without hesitation, Kenny changed his
schedule and agreed to perform that first night, and has done so every other show since. “I think that it’s very important for people to know that Kenny’s kindness and generosity is one of the main reasons we have been able to raise as much money as we have over the years,”
said Agnew. “His participation made people want to come out and see what we could do. In the ensuing years he passed up a lot of jobs that paid a lot better than we did just so he could be here, and for that we are all very grateful.” That kind of generosity has spilled over into
the rest of the community as dozens of volunteers, other entertainers, individuals, businesses, church organizations and community groups make sizeable contributions to the event, which also includes a silent auction offering hundreds of donated items to the highest bidders and a raffle
with a first prize of a $1,000 travel certificate. Tickets for this funfilled evening of professional quality family entertainment are still only $15 for adults and $12 for seniors and children 12 and under. They are available at London Drugs and Save on Foods at the Junction, Shop-
pers Drug Mart on the Lougheed Highway, Rex Cox Mean’s Wear and Murdoch’s Book Shoppe on First Avenue. In addition people are asked to bring non-perishable items for the food bank. For more information call the Clarke Theatre at 604-820-3961 or John Agnew at 604-826-4903.

One of the most renowned and performed plays in American history is being performed by Mission secondary’s drama department. Our Town, by Thornton Wilder, is a timeless piece with three acts which walk us through the daily lives of a precarious community, much like our own, introducing the audience to its young and old, and inviting the crowd to embrace their human condition. Set at the turn of the 20th century, Wilder’s message prevails: Take the time to stop and smell the roses; life is precious and its tenuousness escapes us when we take it for granted. Varsity Roadrunners lose to Barsby, JV team plays Saturday at Empire Field Tanner Pearce named B.C. AA most valuable player Mission Roadrunner quarterback Tanner Pearce was named the B.C. AA most valuable player for 2010 for his on-field performance. The talented QB has been a force to be reckoned with all season and passed for 1,433 yards and 19 touchdowns, on top of scrambling for 419 yards and three touchdowns. But despite Pearce’s and the rest of the Roadrunners’ best efforts, the varsity team couldn’t take down the number three ranked John Barsby Bulldogs last weekend in the Subway Bowl AA semi-finals. The local team, ranked second in the province, was behind by a touchdown entering the third quarter looking to score. Unfortunately, the power-
ful Bulldogs kept solid pressure on both ends of the Roadrunner game and notched a trio of touchdowns to put the Mission squad down by 20 points. A series of mistakes lead to Mission not posting a point in the heartbreaking 28-0 loss to the Nanaimo team. Junior varsity The junior team maintained its perfect season last week putting down Hugh Boyd and advancing to the B.C. Championships on Saturday. The JV team has been racking up big numbers all year long and hope to continue its domination of the league Dec. 4 at Empire Stadium where they take on the John Barsby Bulldogs at 10 a.m.
Mission Roadrunner Evan Horton makes a break for yards while by Hugh Boyd’s Riley Galloway lines him up last Thursday. The junior varsity squad skipped past Hugh Boyd and will be playing John Barsby at Empire Field on Saturday in the B.C. Championships. JOHN VAN PUTTEN PHOTO
Make a lure box for the angler on your Christmas list
C
hristmas is now four weeks away so we are offering two easy to make hand-crafted fly or lure boxes that are sure to please the angler on your list. Small boxes are made with one-inch wide pine strips and some veneer or 1/8” plywood. Form the sides to the dimensions you wish with the pine strips while gluing the end together. Cut the front and back (from your veneer or plywood) pieces to fit the side you have already made. Glue the front and back to the sides and you now have a box. Next, cut through the centre of all four sides of
your box, creating two halves. Trim to your desired width and line the inside of each half with closed cell foam. Attach two dollhouse hinges to your two halves and you have a wood fly or lure box. To personalize this box, coat the outside with lacquer, then add folk art, decals, and/or calligraphy. Lastly, seal and finish your box with two or more coats of varathane. THE MISSION RECORD – THURSDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2010
What’s Happening in Mission
JOY Joy is the second grace mentioned by St. Paul as a fruit of the Spirit. Joy is a translation of the Greek word “chara,” which can be rendered as joy, gladness, or delight. The Greek verb “charein” means “to rejoice.” Throughout the Bible, there are many and varied occurrences of joy and rejoicing. For instance, we are told repeatedly in the Psalms to “Rejoice in the Lord.” (Cf. Psalms 33, 35, and 97) And Jesus tells us that He has come to bring joy: “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.” (John 15:11) We are repeatedly told that following God’s commandments and having faith that God will save us, brings joy. Indeed, it is joyful to know that we are doing God’s will, that our sins are truly forgiven, and that salvation awaits us. This is the real joy which abides in us despite the ups and downs of our external circumstances or even our momentary mood swings. And although we may not always feel the elation of being on top of the mountain, if we keep our faith and trust in the Lord, we will always have the bedrock of joy to sustain us. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. R.S.V. Romans 15:13
